Microsoft Wants Isolation Ward for Infected PCs

Microsoft security chief Scott Charney wants to protect your computer from botnet-infected PCs on the Internet. In a paper published yesterday, Charney proposed issuing “health certificates” to malware-free machines, requiring antivirus updates for those with vulnerabilities, and quarantining PCs infected by botnets. In a post to a company blog, he argued, “Just as when an individual who is not vaccinated puts others’ health at risk, computers that are not protected or have been compromised with a bot put others at risk and pose a greater threat to society.”

The Associated Press is fed up with… the Internet, apparently. And it’s going to do… something about it. At the news-gathering co-op’s annual meeting today, AP chairman Dean Singleton let rip a sort of hellfire-and-brimstone speech in which he announced the AP’s vague plans to stop unnamed scoundrels from making money from their work. Unstated but obvious public enemy number one: Google.

Funny isn’t it? Congress spent most of last year calling for Internet companies to limit user data retention and here it is pushing legislation that would require Internet service providers and the operators of Wi-Fi access points to retain Internet user data for up to two years. Why? To protect children from predators, of course
