<p>Last week, after he turned in better-than-expected earnings and tried to explain to a worried Wall Street how the search algorithm changes at Google, called Panda, were significant but not devastating to his business, BoomTown had a short phone interview with Demand Media CEO Richard Rosenblatt.</p>
<p>To ask even more questions about Panda! <em>Grrrrr&#8230;</em></p>
<p>Actually, Rosenblatt was as cordial as ever about what is a hair-pullingly critical issue for his newly public company, which has really been under investor and other scrutiny from the get-go about the way it handles content.</p>
<p>Which is to say very much differently than traditional media companies had done in the past, with an eye on how to optimize traffic and advertising revenue by using tech to know exactly how much each piece of content online is actually worth and how much it should cost.</p>
<p>Them&#8217;s been fighting words for a while, with accusations by detractors of Demand&#8217;s system that it is little more than a &#8220;content farm,&#8221; producing poor quality fare.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt has battled that charge all the way through a lucrative IPO, but the company definitely got caught in the Panda maelstrom, as Google has tried to cull out bad results (and make itself look better, it must be said).</p>
<p>This has put Demand in an awkward position&#8211;trying to minimize the damage, real and perceived, created by the changes, and also making sure Google does not become even more aggressive by tut-tutting those changes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a delicate dance for Rosenblatt, as you will see from my handful of questions (especially since Demand&#8217;s stock has been badly hit):</p>
<p><strong>Q: What were you trying to communicate in the call, especially since investors seemed very focused on Panda? </strong></p>
<p><em>A: I was trying in the simplest way to explain the way we figure the relationship of how much traffic to ROI (return on investment) and RPM (revenue per 1,000 impressions).</p>
<p>I think the best way to assuage the worries is to just keep on growing our business and traffic.</p>
<p>What I also wanted to show was that third-party data sources should not be relied on.</p>
<p>We did get affected, for sure. But I was not just being optimistic, we wanted to use that to really understand what we can do better.</p>
<p>We really need these kind of signals to shake things up.</em></p>
<p><strong>Explain what you are doing to improve quality&#8211;does that mean longer articles or paying more for content to get better stuff?</strong></p>
<p><em>A: There are some topics that do not deserve more than 500 words, and some deserve more.</p>
<p>But we&#8217;re not going to make content that is expensive just because, except maybe for marketing purposes. It has to make financial sense at the scale of our current business.</p>
<p>We would spend more on a post on &#8220;How to Build a Deck,&#8221; for example, if Home Depot were interested in sponsoring that content.</em></p>
<p><strong>Q: Given Google&#8217;s shift in its algorithm, are you shifting your distribution, such as toward social and mobile?</strong></p>
<p><em>A: If you look at where trends are going, that&#8217;s where we are going to be.</p>
<p>Everything is shifting quickly to mobile and social and we will shift in the same way.</p>
<p>It used to be there were not a lot of places to make content for, and now we have a lot more choices.</p>
<p>If you are out there with our data and our assets, you change as the market changes.</em></p>
<p><strong>Q: How are you changing the continued perception that Demand is a content farm?</strong></p>
<p><em>A: I don&#8217;t think anyone has defined what a content farm is and I am not sure what it means either.</p>
<p>We obviously don&#8217;t think we are a content farm and I am not sure we can counter every impact if some people think we are.</p>
<p>The only way we are going to do that is continued growth in revenue and showing that we are doing this for the longterm.</em></p>

<p>Today, after Demand Media <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110505/demand-media-beat-the-street-and-promises-to-cleans-up-its-act/">beat Wall Street expectations</a>, its execs got on the horn with investors to explain how it plans to beat the Panda.</p>
<p>That would be the beastly name for Google&#8217;s rejiggering of its search algorithm, in order to rid search results of poor quality content.</p>
<p>Along with many other sites, Demand has gotten smacked by its raging paw.</p>
<p>Still, the Santa Monica, Calif.-based <a href="http://ir.demandmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=215358&#038;p=irol-newsArticle&#038;ID=1560524&#038;highlight=">company reported</a> revenue of $79.5 million and six cents a share in adjusted net income.</p>
<p>Wall Street was expecting the company to report about $69.6 million in revenue for the three months, with four cents a share in adjusted profits.</p>
<p>On a GAAP basis, net loss per share was 13 cents compared to 94 cents a year ago.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the liveblog of the conference call:</p>
<p><strong>2 pm PT:</strong> Demand&#8217;s investor relations dude came on and I immediately tuned out until CEO Richard Rosenblatt got on the line to talk about the results.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/imgres3.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/imgres3.jpeg" alt="" title="imgres" width="274" height="184" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-43644" /></a></p>
<p>He was as perky as ever, launching right into the meat of the situation&#8211;how Demand was going to pretty up its offerings, such as a redesign of its flagship eHow site and its new editorial arrangement with another perky person, food lady Rachael Ray and the also perky fashionista/talk show lady Tyra Banks.</p>
<p>Gone will be user-generated content that Demand used to let people post at will on its eHow site that was, <em>well</em>, less than good.</p>
<p>As in, bad.</p>
<p>Instead, it&#8217;s &#8220;curation,&#8221; &#8220;editorial innovation&#8221; and feedback cycles.</p>
<p>We old-timers like to call that journalism and copyediting, complete with mean old editors who spiked said copy when it was crappy.</p>
<p>&#8220;Let me be clear,&#8221; said Rosenblatt, the Google changes did negatively impact Demand&#8217;s traffic. But Rosenblatt said the company dug into its content and has been improving it since.</p>
<p><strong>2:17 pm:</strong> Now it was CFO Charles Hillard reading the results themselves. I am sorry, Mr. Finance Guy, but I can read it myself, so this is always the time in earnings calls when I check out and spend my time improving <em>my</em> content.</p>
<p>So when I heard words such as &#8220;stock-based comp,&#8221; I moved on to fixing all the typos that a very nice reader alerted me to, since I was writing too quickly.</p>
<p>Then, I briefly considered writing a high-quality post for eHow on how to write earnings and fix typos at the same time. I am <em>that</em> good.</p>
<p><strong>2:30 pm:</strong> The CFO dude finished up and the Q&#038;A with analysts started.</p>

<p>Rosenblatt seemed calm, cool and collected.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think on this one, they did a very good job,&#8221; he said of Google&#8217;s search-fixing efforts, trying to soothe the savage beast. &#8220;We all continue to evolve.&#8221;</p>
<p>Which translated to: Google says jump and we say: &#8220;How high?&#8221;</p>
<p>Which is then followed by: &#8220;Please sir, can I have some more (traffic)?&#8221;</p>
<p>More Google algo change questions.</p>
<p>I suspect there is a new tactic afoot by Demand: Bore us into submission about the traffic devastation from Larry Page&#8217;s minions with endless questions about algo.</p>
<p>Finally, a question about mobile and international expansion. Apparently, Demand content is going to be translated into five different languages.</p>
<p>Yay! I am readying my version of &#8220;How to Boil Water&#8221; in French! (&#8220;Comment Faire Bouillir L&#8217;eau&#8221;!)</p>
<p>Mobile is going to be big too for Demand, which it is for everyone.</p>
<p>Then it was onto a question about improving content, including paying its writers more moolah, which would then eat into the Demand cheaper content business model.</p>

<p>I liked that question! I suddenly decided I was going to shift to a lugubrious post on the history of the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maginot_Line">Maginot Line</a> in 132 parts!</p>
<p>Oops, Rosenblatt said the data has to show that the peeps want those longer pieces.</p>
<p>Back to the boiling water opus!</p>
<p>It&#8217;s on to some video questions and then back to search, as in diversifying away from relying on search to get traffic and premium prices for its advertising.</p>
<p>As in, how much are you going to cozy up to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg?</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s less about where traffic comes from and more about where they land,&#8221; said Rosenblatt, except you just know he sent a lovely floral bouquet plus a hefty selection of citrus to Zuckerberg&#8217;s new house in Silicon Valley right after Panda roared.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt deflected a lot of questions in this arena. &#8220;We still think that search is a fantastic way&#8221; to gain traffic, he said, making sure Google&#8217;s Page did not chomp off his hand as he courted his social networking nemesis at Facebook.</p>
<p>But as the old Kikuyu proverb goes: &#8220;When elephants fight, it is the grass that suffers.&#8221;</p>
<p>More likely, as Mary Chapin Carpenter sings: &#8220;Sometimes you&#8217;re the windshield. Sometimes you&#8217;re the bug.&#8221;</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see which is which for Demand in the quarters ahead.</p>

<p>Demand Media handily beat Wall Street expectations in its first quarter results today, released after the market closed.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://ir.demandmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=215358&#038;p=irol-newsArticle&#038;ID=1560524&#038;highlight=">company reported</a> revenue of $79.5 million and six cents a share in adjusted net income.</p>
<p>Investors were expecting the company to report about $69.6 million in revenue for the three months, with four cents a share in adjusted profits.</p>
<p>On a GAAP basis, the net loss per share was 13 cents compared to 94 cents a year ago.</p>
<p>The decent results could boost Demand&#8217;s stock, which has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110505/kung-fu-panda-too-demand-media-1q-earnings-all-about-battling-the-bears/">been hit hard</a> since Google launched &#8220;Panda,&#8221; an overhaul of its search algorithm to improve results and remove poor quality content.</p>
<p>In a conference call at 2 pm PT today, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110505/liveblogging-demand-medias-q1-earnings-perky-perfecting/">which BoomTown will be liveblogging</a>, most will be paying more mind to what the online content company&#8217;s top execs&#8211;especially CEO Richard Rosenblatt&#8211;have to say about the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110417/demand-media-about-google-algo-impact-move-on-nothing-to-see-here">impact of the updates from Google</a> to Demand&#8217;s various Web offerings.</p>
<p>As a first strike, some of Demand&#8217;s execs briefed the media earlier today on efforts to improve the quality of its content&#8211;you can read the <a href="http://ir.demandmedia.com/phoenix.zhtml?c=215358&#038;p=irol-newsArticle&#038;ID=1560570&#038;highlight=">official press releases here on that</a> and <a href="http://www.ehow.com/wcp-press-release.html">also here</a>.</p>
<p>In them, Demand said it will remove some online posts that were substandard and created under a now-suspended writers&#8217; compensation system. It said it is also improving reader feedback tools and adding more substantive stories to its sites.</p>
<p>Those are all good ideas, since Google&#8217;s tweaks have been chewing away at a range of Web sites&#8211;such as those owned by Demand&#8211;which rely heavily on search engine optimization to bring in huge traffic.</p>
<p>One big hit for Demand, due to Panda, has been to its flagship eHow site.</p>
<p>All the mishegas has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110427/demand-shares-drastic-dip-due-to-googley-panda-monium/">hurt the Santa Monica, Calif., company&#8217;s stock</a>. It&#8217;s down just over 30 percent since Demand&#8217;s IPO in late January, as bearish investors fret over the implications of Panda.</p>
<p>Still, in its report, Demand said its content and media revenue was up 72 percent to $51.9 million, compared to $30.2 million last year.</p>

<p>Would it surprise you to know that BoomTown doesn&#8217;t really care anymore if TechCrunch editor Michael Arrington sidelines as a blogger while he makes investments in tech companies his tech news site covers?</p>
<p>In a post yesterday, titled <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/27/an-update-to-my-investment-policy/">&#8220;An Update to My Investment Policy,&#8221;</a> Arrington made his seemingly cogent arguments that plenty of disclosure made it all &#8220;fine,&#8221; took one of his typical look-at-me swipes at anyone who dared to question this logic (apparently, we&#8217;re crappy &#8220;direct&#8221; competitors, so we haters have no standing to comment!) and presumably went on his merry investing way.</p>
<p>While I was first irked&#8211;because it was an appalling show to many of us cranky standards-insisting whiners&#8211;I soon realized Arrington had made a good argument about who he is and, frankly, who he has always been.</p>
<p>In other words, it&#8217;s a kind of there-he-goes-again thing, vaguely icky but hardly surprising and completely genuine.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, his new boss, AOL content head Arianna Huffington, pointed me to his post in an email.</p>
<p>When I asked her for an on-the-record comment, as usual, she politely and quickly complied, writing in support of Arrington:</p>
<p>&#8220;TechCrunch is committed to transparency. Michael has written about the guidelines he follows&#8211;that he rarely writes about companies in which he is an investor, and that, when he does, he clearly discloses this information. The same rules apply when TechCrunch’s writers cover these companies.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Hold the phone.</em></p>
<p>Because while I kind of understand where Arrington is coming from, what I don&#8217;t understand is how this kind of convenient and on-the-fly rule-making can govern a much larger company whose strongly and repeatedly stated goal by Huffington herself is to create quality journalism.</p>
<p>Since I believed Huffington&#8211;whom I like very much as an Internet figure and as a friend&#8211;I was confused at what the rules for the whole of AOL content were now.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why I sent her a long new list of questions to answer, which are:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>1) What are, if any, the ethical guidelines about making investments for the editorial staff at HuffPo media group properties?</p>
<p>2) Since Arrington now seems to have permission to do so from you, can other editors at AOL properties do the same&#8211;that is, make very adjacent investments to what their site covers, as long as they disclose it? For example, can an editor who runs the entertainment site make investments in entertainment companies she/he has coverage responsibility over? (By the way, did you give him permission to make these investments? Did he ask?)</p>
<p>3) Is there anyone who polices what is fair coverage of competitors&#8211;i.e. companies competing with companies your editors invest in?</p>
<p>4) If an editor makes investments in a company and someone who works for them writes about that company, does that editor have to recuse himself from the story? Is that even possible?</p>
<p>5) Since you just fired someone for what you called an ethical breach&#8211;asking freelancers to work for free and also seemingly defending an attempt to curry favor with an advertiser/client&#8211;why is this not an ethical breach?</p></blockquote>
<p>I had a lot more questions, still unanswered by Huffington, but you can see where this is going.</p>
<p>Simply put, does AOL, which is touting itself as a 21st-century media company, need to have 21st-century rules of the road? Or perhaps not so much?</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Now, it is a real clown circus at AOL, with the company declaring that editorial personnel cannot make investments, <em>except Arrington</em>!</p>
<p>&#8220;As a rule, in order to avoid conflicts of interests, AOL Huffington Post Media Group editors, writers, and reporters may not have a financial interest in a company or industry that they regularly cover,&#8221; AOL said in a statement to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/aol-says-reporters-are-not-allowed-to-invest-in-companies-they-cover-except-michael-arrington-2011-4#ixzz1KqjAqGPL">Business Insider today</a>, even though I nicely asked for a comment on the issue yesterday. &#8220;Arrington operates from a unique position.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>And how!</em> Where do I get such a faboo ethical hall pass from Content Principal Huffington?</p>
<p>I suppose I should go all slouching-towards-Bethlehem here,  and wring my hands over this unusual ruling, but what&#8217;s the use?</p>
<p>As you might have read: &#8220;The best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity.&#8221;</p>
<p>How did this all start, especially since I feel like this ridiculous tempest in a Silicon Valley teapot over Arrington&#8217;s investment-making might actually be my fault a little bit?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s why:</p>
<p>On Tuesday night around 10 pm (just when I start getting revved up), I wrote a testy email to Arrington&#8217;s bosses at AOL&#8211;Huffington and CEO Tim Armstrong&#8211;as well as the Internet portal&#8217;s sharp PR head, asking for a response about what seemed to me to be a glaring conflict of interest at TechCrunch related to new investment activity by Arrington and the site&#8217;s coverage of those particular companies he had invested in.</p>
<p>It was all disclosed, of course, but it still felt, as I said, <em>icky</em>.</p>
<p>And, given the recent and loudly stated goal of promoting quality journalism by Huffington&#8211;including the recent dismissal of AOL&#8217;s Moviefone site editor over what the company considered ethical lapses&#8211;it seemed pertinent to ask.</p>
<p>Mostly because I don&#8217;t think they actually knew much&#8211;if at all&#8211;about Arrington&#8217;s increasing investing action. Armstrong said as much in an email to me, and Huffington assured me they were going to check it out tout de suite.</p>
<p>But rather than the answer I was waiting on, up popped Arrington&#8217;s missive yesterday, which I assume came after his bosses asked for some info on this.</p>
<p>In it, he explained his controversial decision to go back into investing again, in what is clearly a more significant manner.</p>
<p>It was a practice he had abandoned years earlier, apparently after being pecked by detractors for it.</p>
<p><em>But, dear readers, no more! Let Arrington be Arrington!</em></p>
<p>And that seems to be a talented blogger with a flare for the dramatic, with a clearly sharply-honed news nose and sassy writing skills, but a scribe who much prefers to be a <em>playah</em> than just an observer and chronicler of that play.</p>
<p>And, after more reflection, I thought: Well, maybe it is a better idea for Arrington to go play with all the boys in Silicon Valley, which would probably be more fun than taking flack for lack of traditional journalistic ethics he never ascribed to in the first place.</p>

<p>I once jokingly <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081218/techcrunchs-yertle-the-turtle-tantrum-over-news-embargoes">nicknamed Arrington Yertle the Turtle</a> after the Dr. Seuss book on one dubious king of one small pond in Sala-Ma-Sond, after he went particularly nuts on the topic of news-embargo breaking.</p>
<p>That diatribe on how he saw news rules&#8211;which is to say, there aren&#8217;t any that bind him&#8211;was vintage Arrington, too. And, after reading his latest post, I suddenly realized that it&#8217;s pointless to give a turtle a hard time for not being a fish.</p>
<p>But Huffington is another story. She has put herself in word and deed right into the center of the debate on where news is going on the Web, especially after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash">AOL paid $315 million for her Huffington Post</a> news and opinion site.</p>
<p>Huffington has certainly taken a lot of hits over the years as the HuffPo has grown, some deserved, but she has clearly led an impressive effort.</p>
<p>In fact, I think the cute-kitten and celebrity-loving angle played up by her detractors to dismiss her is silliness, because she and the Huffington Post are clearly more than that and are obviously having a major impact on the future direction of content in the digital age.</p>
<p>But that power she has sought also gives her a responsibility to say exactly what that means on a real and granular and consistent level, beyond the platitudes of wanting to make great journalism that she declares all the time now.</p>
<p>In other words, very specifically: What does Arianna Huffington stand for in regards to journalism? What are her rules and standards and codes? And, perhaps more importantly, what does she <em>not</em> stand up for?</p>
<p>These are questions I hope Huffington&#8211;who is really good at smacking back at criticism, too (See: the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110310/arianna-huffington-to-bill-keller-who-you-calling-oxpecker">New York Times&#8217; Bill Keller</a>)&#8211;will address in one of her patented blog-xplosions and many times over, too.</p>

<p>My <strong>ATD</strong> disclosure is probably the most detailed of all of them, since I gay-married Megan Smith a dozen years ago. She later became a VP at Google, which I cover from time to time, especially related to other companies I focus on more, such as Yahoo.</p>
<p>Most of the time, if you care to read my posts on Google, I am probably tougher and snarkier than not, mostly because I know the search giant from its earliest days.</p>
<p>And, even though I once wrote extensively for the Journal about Google since its founding and before Megan arrived there, I thought it wise to lay it all out in detailed detail.</p>
<p>(By the way, if you want to try to tweak me by asking what News Corp.-owned Fox News&#8217; ethics rules are, I don&#8217;t know, as <strong>ATD</strong> belongs to Dow Jones, which has had them forever. I will say, though, that Roger Ailes often freaks me out.)</p>
<p>In any case, as Arrington preaches, the more disclosure the better, and perhaps I should say even more so here, given the current swirl, by noting explicitly that I garner exactly <em>no</em> financial benefits from my relationship with Megan.</p>
<p>That might seem odd, because she certainly earns more. But I don&#8217;t know how much nor do I ask, since we have separate bank accounts and she always pays up&#8211;well, <em>almost</em> always&#8211;when half the bills are due. While it sounds painfully un-romantic, we only spend overall what each of us can afford equally in an exact 50-50 split.</p>

<p>In addition, I also legally signed away all rights to inheritance&#8211;although I had no such marriage rights in the first place, being gay&#8211;of Megan&#8217;s assets, which are in a trust for her relatives and our sons (for when they are too old to have any fun).</p>
<p>More to the point, I believe this makes me the only person to marry an exec at a hot Silicon Valley company with no prospect of any gold-digging.</p>
<p>Thus, I clearly would make the worst investor <em>ever</em>&#8211;not that I ever invest in tech or plan to while I am a reporter covering the sector.</p>
<p>Thank god, I suppose, that Michael Arrington is there to take up the slack.</p>

<p>&#8220;We welcome the change,&#8221; he insisted about Google taking aim last Friday at so-called &#8220;content farms,&#8221; producers of low-quality content that spam up the Web and the search giant&#8217;s results. &#8220;And we endorse what Google is doing 100 percent.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s ironic, given among those allegedly hit hardest by changing of its famous algorithm&#8211;based on early, and perhaps questionable, surveys&#8211;is Yahoo&#8217;s Associated Content.</p>
<p>But, if true, and traffic at Associated Content&#8211;which the Silicon Valley Internet giant <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100518/yahoo-snaps-up-associated-content-for-90-million-to-counter-aol-and-demand-media">bought for $90 million</a> last May&#8211;is indeed badly hurt, it&#8217;s obviously going to be a problem for Yahoo, which relies on advertising revenue as its core business.</p>
<p>A quick poll by Sistrix, a search engine optimization firm, using one million keywords before and after Google&#8217;s changes, showed that Associated Content&#8217;s &#8220;visibility index&#8221;&#8211; including keyword and ranking positions ranking and clickthrough rate&#8211;was down 93 percent.</p>
<p>So yesterday, Beatty, who founded Associated Content and now works at Yahoo, dialed up BoomTown to talk about what the Google shift will mean to Yahoo.</p>
<p>First off in the wide-ranging interview, he noted, &#8220;everything on the Web is changing all the time,&#8221; noting that Associated Content used to rely more on the now weakened Digg and RSS for its traffic and distribution.</p>
<p>&#8220;Obviously, that has changed and we have still managed to grow,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Beatty said it is still not clear that the new tweaks in search criteria at Google would mean for Associated Content&#8217;s offerings&#8211;coming from 400,000 contributors of all kinds.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our data will not be reconciled for weeks&#8230;but some will be up and some will be down,&#8221; he said, adding the overall, &#8220;I suspect it will be down, although it&#8217;s not accurate by any means in the numbers released so far, since there is no way you can know this early.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s obvious that Google&#8217;s latest move has not been not good for Associated Content, although Beatty noted that the Silicon Valley search king is no longer the main source of traffic for Associated Content material.</p>
<p>Instead, that would be the owned-and-operated sites of Yahoo, most of all, and&#8211;increasingly&#8211;social networking sites such as Facebook.</p>
<p>&#8220;When we sold the company, we know that sites of Yahoo itself would be the biggest driver of our growth and that was the plan,&#8221; said Beatty. &#8220;And, though smaller, social means of distribution are clearly the way people are now finding our content.&#8221;</p>
<p>In an email later, Beatty underscored this point:</p>
<p>&#8220;Search traffic is not our focus within Yahoo&#8211;it hasn&#8217;t been for 10<br />
months&#8230;traffic sources have changed endlessly over that last six years&#8230;search is one, albeit an important one and clearly, [but] now it too is changing and we see the future of our content distribution coming from O&#038;O properties and social networks, as much as anything.&#8221;</p>

<p>Still, Beatty said Associated Content will adapt as long as Google does not make its tweaks on a network basis and rather than on a site basis. (Interestingly, that would presumably include Google&#8217;s own&#8211;and often spammish&#8211;Blogger property, which is fueled by its powerful AdSense engine.)</p>
<p>&#8220;It appears that changes have been made on an asset-by-asset basis<br />
is good&#8211;networkwide cramdown would be inappropriate and uneducated,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Still, the best way to fight the Google initiative is by delivering higher quality content, which Beatty said was being done at the company via a series of ongoing measures to improve overall submissions.</p>
<p>Those include a Yahoo style guide for content creators, a two-tiered human editor review process, analytical analysis, a featured contributor program and, interesting, an online tutorial process called the Yahoo Contributor Network.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not exactly Harvard University, of course, but Beatty said there is more to come.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are committed to supporting and helping our contributors navigate through this and every other change in the crowdsourced content economy,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We want the best article to get more traffic.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, with Google&#8217;s doubtlessly continuing changes in its criteria for what good content is, presumably, that won&#8217;t be Yahoo&#8217;s to decide.</p>

<p>Despite all the polite throat-clearing in the various internal memos coming out of AOL today, with a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110224/post-huffpo-an-aol-reorg-heres-the-internal-memo/">rejiggering of its content management</a>&#8211;including the [elimination of the job] of Media and Studios President David Eun [from the original one he had been appointed to by AOL CEO Tim Armstrong earlier this year]&#8211;what is really happening is what sources said will likely be a [drastic rejiggering of] more recent strategies of how to run its media business.</p>
<p>That is likely to begin with the hip-checking of [a controversial, if miscontrued, internal document titled] &#8220;The AOL Way,&#8221; which many sources tell BoomTown was [sponsored by Armstrong and created to stress best new media practices, including to garner better traffic], once the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110206/youve-got-arianna-aol-buys-huffington-post-for-315-million-in-cash">$315 million acquisition of the Huffington Post</a> is completed.</p>
<p>[Whatever the original intent of "The AOL Way," it was badly received both inside and outside the New York-based company, thought of as too focused on SEO and not as much on creating the kind of high-quality journalism loudly touted by Armstrong.]</p>
<p>And that could mean a new and [perceptually journalistically friendly] direction forged by its the Web site&#8217;s Co-founder and new AOL editorial chief Arianna Huffington will take place.</p>
<p>In fact, much of what has [been put into place since Armstrong took over, from an editorial perspective at least,] is being questioned and reevaluated.</p>
<p>While what exactly that means is still being formulated by Huffington and others at AOL, it will likely not be using most of the mostly by-the-numbers recommendations of the infamous &#8220;AOL Way&#8221; deck.</p>
<p>Subtitled &#8220;Content, Product, Media Engineering and Revenue Management&#8221; and leaked to the media, it was all about how the struggling Internet portal thinks about its content properties.</p>
<p>Pretty much like cows to be milked, which has caused endless hand-wringing among the editorial troops at AOL. [While it might have been intended as a "best practices" memo for new media], this should come as no surprise, given damn-the-journalists-full-speed-ahead tone and SEO-overboard themes.</p>
<p>As reported by <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-aol-way">Silicon Alley Insider on February 1</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>* AOL tells its editors to decide what topics to cover based on four considerations: Traffic potential, revenue potential, edit quality and turn-around time.</p>
<p>* AOL asks its editors to decide whether to produce content based on &#8220;the profitability consideration.&#8221;</p>
<p>* The documents reveal that AOL is, when the story calls for it, willing to boost traffic by 5% to 10% with search ads and other &#8220;paid media.&#8221;</p>
<p>* AOL site leaders are expected to have eight ideas for packages that could generate at least $1 million in revenue on hand at all times.</p>
<p>* In-house AOL staffers are expected to write five to 10 stories per day.</p>
<p>* AOL knows its sites are too dependent on traffic from AOL.com, and it wants its editors to fix the problem by posting more frequently, with more emphasis on getting pageviews.</p></blockquote>
<p>[It was Eun's job to push the themes in "The AOL Way,' of course, along with upgrading the content business at AOL, which has become its main focus under Armstrong's turnaround effort.</p>
<p>While Eun has added several measures to stress quality journalism at AOL, since he was <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100204/another-googler-goes-to-aol-youtube-boss-dave-eun-replaces-bill-wilson-as-content-boss">brought in from Google</a> with much hype a year ago, having the colorful and influential Huffington as the flagship editorial personality at AOL--paired with trusted Armstrong lieutenant Jon Brod as COO--proved irresistible to the AOL CEO.</p>
<p>Of course, that left Eun without the job he had been hired for, which has now essentially been split among Huffington, Brod and also AOL exec Ned Brody.</p>
<p>And while Armstrong offered him different opportunities within AOL, sources said, with his original position gone in the new regime, Eun declined and decided to depart.]</p>
<p>In his parting email to staff, in fact, Eun continued to stress the numbers achieved under his tenure.</p>
<p>But, at the start, he was clear:</p>
<p>&#8220;With the historic acquisition of The Huffington Post, my role and responsibilities as President, AOL Media are changing. Tim and I have discussed at length how I might continue within the new organizational structure, but ultimately there isn&#8217;t a role that matches what I am seeking to do.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nor, it seems, for &#8220;The AOL Way.&#8221;</p>

<p>In another significant search announcement yesterday, Google said it was revising its algorithm to target makers of low-quality content.</p>
<p>The search giant has been criticized by many of late for the presence of too much spam in its results, which degrades the consumer experience on the powerful site.</p>
<p>Thus, &#8220;pretty big algorithmic improvement to our ranking&#8211;a change that noticeably impacts 11.8% of our queries,&#8221; said Google in a blog post.</p>
<p>The company continued:</p>
<p>&#8220;This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality site&#8211;sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites with original content and information such as research, in-depth reports, thoughtful analysis and so on.&#8221;</p>
<p>Who Google is aiming at is unclear&#8211;some point to Demand Media, whose top exec recently said the content company welcomed any improvements to the search results in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110222/liveblogging-demand-medias-and-richard-rosenblatts-first-earnings-call-the-avocado-difference">its recent quarterly call</a>.</p>
<p>“We consider ourself very white hat,” declared CEO Richard Rosenblatt, who has often touted the Demand&#8217;s good relations with Google, to a question from a Wall Street analyst about the series of recent declarations by Google to clean up its search results.</p>
<p>That was further underscored yesterday.</p>
<p>Interestingly, the Google post about the changes, titled <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/finding-more-high-quality-sites-in.html">&#8220;Finding More High-Quality Sites,&#8221;</a> was authored by Google&#8217;s Amit Singhal and Matt Cutts&#8211;who have cut a high profile of late in the search arena.</p>
<p>Both <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110201/beyond-the-search-box-the-white-pleather-honeypot-smackdown/">Singhal and Cutts were quite vocal recently in loopy accusations</a> about Microsoft&#8217;s Bing lifting Google&#8217;s search results.</p>
<p>And Cutts has been a frequent visitor to Washington, D.C. of late, to defend Google over its <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100701/google-lands-flight-information-provider-ita-for-700-million">controversial acquisition of the ITA Software</a> flight information company, as well as its search ranking process.</p>
<p>At a January 13 meeting, in an email obtained by BoomTown, Cutts was the draw:</p>

<p>Demand went further in a <a href="http://www.demandmedia.com/blog/a-statement-about-search-engine-algorithm-changes/">blog posted last night</a>, which is here in its entirety:</p>

<p>How our content reaches the consumer&#8211;whether it&#8217;s through direct visits, social media referrals, apps or search&#8211;has always been important to and monitored closely by us. We also recognize that major search engines like Google have and will continue to make frequent changes. We have built our business by focusing on creating the useful and original content that meets the specific needs of today&#8217;s consumer. So naturally we applaud changes search engines make to improve the consumer experience&#8211;it&#8217;s both the right thing to do and our focus as well.</p>
<p>Today, Google announced an algorithm change to nearly 12% of their U.S. query results. As might be expected, a content library as diverse as ours saw some content go up and some go down in Google search results.This is consistent with what Google discussed on their blog post. It&#8217;s impossible to speculate how these or any changes made by Google impact any online business in the long term&#8211;but at this point in time, we haven&#8217;t seen a material net impact on our Content &#038; Media business.</p>
<p>Coming out of the IPO quiet period this week, we knew the topic of Google&#8217;s search engine changes was top of mind for many people&#8211;so we discussed it on the earnings call, in a couple of follow up interviews and are now issuing this statement. However, we generally don&#8217;t comment or speculate on changes by major search engines. They make changes nearly daily in a quest to give consumers the best possible experience, as do we.</p>
<p>Finally, in our Q4 earnings call on Tuesday we talked at length about the nature of our content and the consumer experiences we are delivering. Beyond our success helping consumers discovering our content via search, we also shared metrics around direct visits, repeat visits and social visits. We believe these metrics are leading indicators that our properties are developing into recognizable consumer brands that are delivering real value to an increasingly loyal community.</p>

<p>BoomTown always enjoys the maiden voyage of a newly public company, so liveblogging Demand Media&#8217;s first quarterly earnings seems like a must-do.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also the first public outing for CEO Richard Rosenblatt, who has sold off his previous entrepreneurial efforts.</p>
<p>And it seems like a good start, as the Santa Monica, Calif.-based online content company, which <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110126/wall-street-welcomes-the-content-farm-demand-media-super-sizes-its-ipo">had its IPO in late January</a>, finally out to rest some controversy about how much is actually earns by posting $1 million in net income in the last three months of 2010.</p>
<p>Okay, that is a <em>weensy</em> amount, to be sure, but it beat expectations, as well as for revenue, with sales of $73.6 million for the fourth quarter.</p>
<p>Of course, Demand wants Wall Street to look at &#8220;Adjusted OIBDA&#8221; results, which was up 88 percent, and which it is a much prettier $20.1 million in earnings.</p>
<p>Also on deck, as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110222/demand-medias-first-earnings-report-includes-an-actual-profit/">MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kakfa noted today</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Expect to hear at least one riff on whether or not the company feels threatened by <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110128/google-tweaks-search-results-to-punish-scrapers/">Google</a> and changes the search engine is making to push <a href="http://chrome.blogspot.com/2011/02/new-chrome-extension-block-sites-from.html">&#8220;content farms&#8221;</a> out of its results. CEO Richard Rosenblatt insists that his company is not a content farm, and that <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110127/demand-media-says-its-getting-along-just-fine-with-google-thank-you-very-much/">Google is just fine with his stuff</a>, but I have a feeling the issue won&#8217;t go away just yet.&#8221;</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see&#8211;here we go:</p>
<p><strong>2:05 pm PT:</strong> It took me a bit to get into this conference call, since I could not get the live broadcast from the Web site at all and the teleconference operators were snoozing.</p>

<p>And I tuned in just as Rosenblatt (pictured here) was talking about how Demand was helping people get information about how to ripen avocados.</p>
<p>No, <em>really</em>.</p>
<p>(Memo to self: Curb the snotty journalist tone, especially since I love me a good, ripe avocado.)</p>
<p>Rosenblatt, who seems only a little nervous, pressed on by talking about its massive eHow site, as well as Cracked.com and other major branded sites Demand has.</p>
<p>The latest is TypeF women&#8217;s health and beauty site, which is guided by <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100628/exclusive-tyra-banks-picks-demand-as-americas-next-top-digital-business-model">supermodel Tyra Banks</a>.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt then linked it all to advertisers and how much they want to spend on sites like this.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are not limited to just a few key verticals,&#8221; he said, touting its sales staff, including Rosenblatt&#8217;s daring raid of Chief Revenue Officer Joanne Bradford from Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;The company is well positioned to capture an increasing share of brand revenue,&#8221; said Rosenblatt.</p>
<p><strong>2:18 pm:</strong> Rosenblatt then zeroed in on the juicy issues, which center around the quality of the content Demand churns out.</p>
<p>Or, as critics have argued, lack of quality.</p>

<p>&#8220;The level of specificity is arcane to some,&#8221; noted Rosenblatt, using the example of <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_4826178_make-flying-paper-lanterns.html">flying paper lanterns</a> and <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_5381925_make-roof-rake.html">how to make a roof rake</a> as examples of the kind of niche content Demand produces.</p>
<p>Arcane is right, but it takes all kinds!</p>
<p>Plus, insisted Rosenblatt, it&#8217;s good! Accurate! Edited! Useful!</p>
<p>He took the gloves off here, which made me want a Demand piece about taking care of leather gloves (linseed oil?).</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re just getting started,&#8221; said Rosenblatt, about the company and not the glove care tips.</p>
<p><strong>2:24 pm:</strong> The CEO turned it over to the CFO, Charles Hilliard, which meant I was off on my critical Web search about taking care of my gloves.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because he immediately said: &#8220;Adjusted OIBDA.&#8221;</p>
<p>Which-let&#8217;s be honest&#8211;sounds like a communicable disease.</p>
<p>Essentially, said Hilliard, it&#8217;s up, up, up for Demand, in terms of revenue, earnings, page views and more.</p>

<p>For some reason, Hilliard is using the retail term, &#8220;same store sales,&#8221; as a comparison. I covered retails for years, so it is a surprise for this to be the metaphor, but Demand obviously sees itself as a content store.</p>
<p><strong>2:39 pm:</strong> Q&#038;A time and the Google-fights-spam question came first!</p>
<p>Rosenblatt said he welcomed it and appeared unconcerned. His avocado-ripening, roof-rake-making, flying-lantern company needed to make no excuses!</p>
<p>The next question is about expansion, including internationally. Sure, Western Europe.</p>

<p>&#8220;We consider ourself very white hat,&#8221; declared Rosenblatt.</p>
<p>I wonder what the best way to clean a white hat is?</p>
<p>Voila! It&#8217;s <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_5134814_clean-white-hats.html">right here on eHow</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;1. Wash your white hat in the washing machine if it is made of cotton or polyester. Just add laundry detergent and one cup of bleach. Wash the hat using the hot water setting. Do not put the hat in the dryer. The hat will shrink and then it won&#8217;t fit your head.&#8221;</p>
<p>Call the Pulitzer Prize committee!</p>
<p>(Wait, snotty again! I also love clean, white hats.)</p>
<p>I was so riveted by the white-hat thing, I completely missed the next question, but tuned in again to one about revenue momentum.</p>
<p>Essentially, Bradford&#8211;who looks great in a white hat, I might add&#8211;is on the case.</p>
<p>Then some internal technical questions and about guidance for Q1. CFO Hilliard said that the company was guiding for growth, despite more public company expenses.</p>

<p>The last question was about how much branded advertising will make up total revenue. Between five and 10 percent of 2010, said Hilliard, but it is the fastest category of growth.</p>
<p>And also one about curation of content and use of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter for feedback.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt said that feedback can even become content, which will be part of new eHow redesign to come.</p>

<p>SnagFilms, the online video distribution site for professional documentaries, has nabbed $10 million in funding from Comcast&#8217;s investment arm and New Enterprise Associates, and will also now be distributing fictional independent film releases.</p>
<p>That and the new investment giving SnagFilms a valuation of $50 million should be big news at the 11th Sundance Film Festival, the famous independent film gathering opening in Park City, Utah, on Thursday.</p>
<p>And SnagFilms also announced that well-known industry exec Bingham Ray is joining the start-up to spearhead its distribution of fictional narrative and foreign-produced independent films.</p>
<p>The service, unlike the subscription-based video giant Netflix, currently distributes free non-fiction documentary films with advertising, as well as offers rental streaming and purchase options.</p>
<p>And it is profitable, said Ted Leonsis, the former AOL exec who is the founder and has been the driving investor in SnagFilms.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was always my personal frustration as a backer of documentaries that you could not get distribution far and wide,&#8221; he said in an interview earlier today.</p>
<p>He noted that while Netflix is really now focused on big studio fare, &#8220;what we&#8217;ve discovered is a big supply of independent video that has never seen light of day, but that has a big audience.&#8221;</p>
<p>SnagFilms&#8217; strategy is to give broader reach to these films, which often don&#8217;t even have a theatrical opening&#8211;or, if they do, are very small.</p>
<p>Along with its site, which digitizes the films and adds advertising to them, <a href="http://www.snagfilms.com">SnagFilms</a> also encourages Web sites and others to grab films and create a &#8220;virtual movie theater.&#8221; (You can see my effort below.)</p>
<p>It also has video-on-demand deals with Comcast, Verizon and more, as well as purchase options with Apple&#8217;s iTunes and others.</p>
<p>Earlier this month, SnagFilms also launched an impressive and free iPad full-movie-watching app.</p>
<p>SnagFilms also owns a popular news site called indieWIRE, which covers the independent film market, and the new funding will also be used to expand it.</p>
<p>That market has been in need of a boost of some kind, since it has been struggling as financing has dried up for the production of quality documentaries and outside-the-Hollywood-machine movies.</p>
<p>It has long been hoped that the Internet would perhaps save and strengthen the genre, with its supposed long-tail magic.</p>
<p>But the going has been slow. Currently, SnagFilms has 2,000 films in its online library, although Leonsis said the aim is to use the new funds to get 10,000 films on the service as soon as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re trying to build a beachhead in the independent film world,&#8221; he said of SnagFilms, which currently has about 40 employees in Washington, D.C., and New York. &#8220;We think we have a niche and video is the killer app on Web now.&#8221;</p>
<p>Leonsis, who has backed such notable documentaries as &#8220;The Rape of Nanking,&#8221; said NEA&#8217;s Peter Barris will join the board, along with existing investor Steve Case.</p>
<p>Case and Leonsis, of course, were the dynamic duo of AOL&#8217;s glory days.</p>
<p>So, I am rooting for another win in an arena that needs it.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Wikipedia now seems like an enduring institution on the Web, but the site was only founded 10 years ago, tomorrow.</p>
<p>Sue Gardner, executive director of the Wikimedia Foundation, which operates Wikipedia, says it is just recently that the site has gotten itself on sustainable financial footing, and has become widely accepted as a useful, quality resource.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/SueGardner-150x150.png" alt="" title="SueGardner" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2398" />We stopped by the nonprofit&#8217;s San Francisco headquarters, which is located amidst a sea of tech companies in the city&#8217;s SOMA district, on the eve of the big anniversary, which Wikipedia is celebrating with a set of relatively mellow user meet-ups around the world.</p>
<p>Gardner spoke about the evolution of Wikimedia as an organization, and set out its goals for the coming years. We videoed the part of the interview where she sets the scene for the 10th anniversary.</p>

<p>Wikipedia is coming off a successful grassroots fundraiser, where it was able to <a href="http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Half_a_Million_People_Donate_to_Keep_Wikipedia_Free">raise $16 million from users</a>, in part due to <a href="http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/2010/the-science-behind-wikipedias-jimmy-appeal/">founder Jimmy Wales&#8217;s face greeting users</a> every time they visited the site until the end of the campaign. That&#8217;s double the amount raised in a similar campaign the year before.</p>
<p>And over the last 18 months, Wikimedia orchestrated a wide-scale community discussion of its strategy, aided by collaboration expert <a href="http://blueoxen.com/about/eugene-eric-kim/">Eugene Eric Kim</a>, which resulted in a set of goals to take the organization and its many volunteers forward.</p>
<p>Wikipedia now has cumulative 380 million edits, resulting in 17.8 million articles in 250 languages by eight million user accounts, of which about 100,000 edit at least five times per month. It has 52 people in its San Francisco headquarters, which Gardner took over in 2007.</p>
<p>The nonprofit&#8217;s three-part mandate is to increase Wikipedia participation, quality and reach. Its big focus for the coming year will be reach, according to Gardner, specifically targeting poorer areas of the world where Wikipedia has so far proved to be less popular.</p>
<p>The idea, said Gardner, is that if people in these places have the tools and exposure to contribute to Wikipedia, the resulting content will be better representative of the world, as well as more comprehensive.</p>
<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t blame editors for not being representative,&#8221; said Gardner. &#8220;The way to solve this is not to make them feel bad.&#8221;</p>
<p>A major implementation of the initiative will be opening a Wikimedia office in India in the next couple of months. Gardner had just recently returned from a trip to India when we spoke.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Wikimedia&#8217;s product team is also working to redo its registration and discussion tools, and future projects include a better system for understanding user reputations.</p>
<p>The company has also started a campus ambassador program at colleges, which Gardner said is promising in part due to the folks who have turned out so far. Unlike with Wikipedia, where 87 percent of contributors are men, the campus ambassador volunteers were 50 percent women.</p>
<p>Another college effort is a program with 25 <a href="http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/Public_Policy_Initiative">public policy classes</a> to improve the Wikipedia pages on a particular subject matter.</p>
<p>And on the infrastructure front, Wikimedia is finally moving its data center out of the hurricane zone in Florida to a dedicated space in Virginia. The nonprofit is also looking to cache the site from more locations (it currently does so in Amsterdam) so it can be more quickly accessible in more parts of the world.</p>

<p>Adam D&#8217;Angelo (pictured here) is too shy to subject himself to a BoomTown video&#8211;or perhaps too savvy&#8211;but he did agree to a sit-down for a short interview recently in a nondescript room in the Palo Alto, Calif., office building that houses Quora, the hot social answers start-up.</p>
<p>D&#8217;Angelo was, of course, the CTO and VP of Engineering at Facebook, as well as a prep school friend of the massive social networking site&#8217;s co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>But D&#8217;Angelo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080511/facebooks-cto-dangelo-to-leave">left the company in mid-2008</a> and with former Facebooker Charlie Cheever launched the question-and-answer site in January, after much venture capitalist shoving to get on board.</p>
<p>With more than $10 million in funding from Benchmark Capital and a whole lot more hype to contend with, D&#8217;Angelo and his small team have been trying to move the site well beyond its Silicon Valley-tech-dudes forum to one in which a plethora of topics and memes thrive.</p>
<p>As was the initial goal, D&#8217;Angelo said the aim remains to become the best place to find pertinent information about just about anything.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Web is a great place for finding information, but a lot of information that is really important is actually in people&#8217;s heads,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo. &#8220;If I had to pick one, I would say Wikipedia is a good comparison [to Quora], but there is room for more.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not such an easy task, which is why D&#8217;Angelo believes most Q&#038;A sites still come up short for users.</p>
<p>&#8220;Quora is a simple interface, but it is very complicated underneath,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Q&#038;A sites in the past had good systems, but they did not add in identity, reputation and quality.&#8221;</p>
<p>The hope is that by adding those elements, as it develops, Quora can more correctly answer the questions people are looking for.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are really interested in info that changes quickly and in unstructured info,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo, which he noted was at the heart of a lot of searches and well beyond data that search engines such as Google (GOOG) provides.</p>

<p>And for answerers, D&#8217;Angelo believes, it also gives them a place to feature their expertise in a much easier way than if they used their own Web site.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think people have found that Quora is different from a blog, in that people now have to think up what they think people might want to know,&#8221; said D&#8217;Angelo. &#8220;Here, they are given the topics and the questions, which means they are hitting areas they already know their audience is interested in.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, D&#8217;Angelo said he has wanted to turn down the spotlight on the site in recent months, as he hopes to get Quora on as solid footing as possible.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to make a product that markets itself and not because we are big in Silicon Valley,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, we want to tone down anything that does not have to do with improving Quora itself.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps one of the reasons is the competing effort by his old pal and employer at Facebook, which launched its own Answers product soon after D&#8217;Angelo did.</p>
<p>D&#8217;Angelo declined to answer any questions related to the obvious and decidedly odd competition, although it is clear the move irks him, since it was a longtime interest Facebook was never interested in until he was and Quora attracted a giant amount of attention.</p>
<p>&#8220;There were a lot of different things I could have done [when I left Facebook]. But I felt this was an area that was completely neglected compared to other stuff,&#8221; is all D&#8217;Angelo will say.</p>
<p>Luckily for Quora, so far the Facebook Answers product has not garnered a whole lot of buzz, although D&#8217;Angelo discounted that as being a sign of Quora&#8217;s success.</p>
<p>&#8220;This thing is up to us, whether we succeed or fail is something that only we can determine,&#8221; he said.</p>

Amid long-running and persistent rumors of a Verizon iPhone, one analyst has bravely stepped forward to put a date on the device’s market debut. Barclays Capital analyst James Ratcliffe says we’ll see it in early 2011, and he’s sure enough in his prediction that he’s building it into his forecasts for AT&#038;T (T) and Verizon (VZ). </p>
<p>Says Ratcliffe: &#8220;Channel checks by our communications equipment and semiconductor research partners give us greater confidence that Verizon will get an iPhone in early 2011, and we are now incorporating that belief into our models for AT&#038;T and Verizon.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, Ratcliffe doesn’t see the end of AT&#038;T’s iPhone-exclusivity deal with Apple (AAPL) heralding a subscriber exodus at the carrier. While he acknowledges that perception issues with AT&#038;T’s network quality will inevitably drive some customers to flee to Verizon, he believes that many will stay put. </p>
<p>All told, the analyst expects approximately 500,000 to one million &#8220;switchers,&#8221; a relatively small portion of the nine million iPhones he says Verizon will activate in 2011 (<em>click on charts below to enlarge</em>).</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t believe that the addition of a Verizon iPhone will be a seismic event in the wireless competitive environment, although we do expect it to result in a modest spike in AT&#038;T churn, as customers who love their iPhones but have become unhappy with AT&#038;T&#8217;s network take advantage of the alternative,&#8221; Ratcliffe writes.</p>
<p>&#8220;Overall, however, we believe that smartphone customers are relatively sticky, particularly given that (a) 70% of AT&#038;T postpaid customers are on family plans (which would necessitate a group switch), (b) switching cost for customers currently in contract would be $375-525 per handset, (c) approximately 40% of handsets are covered under corporate discount arrangements, many of which may not have VZ equivalents, (d) for many, if not most iPhone customers, the service quality being delivered on the AT&#038;T network is in reality comparable to what they&#8217;d receive on Verizon&#8217;s network, and (e) switching will likely result in accepting a bandwidth-capped data offering, since (we believe) that Verizon is likely to launch tiered bandwidth pricing prior to the launch of an iPhone.&#8221;</p>

<p>So, while the expiration of AT&#038;T’s iPhone-exclusivity deal certainly won’t be good news for the carrier, it’s not going to be a disaster. Ratcliffe figures the carrier will still activate six million iPhones in 2011, which is quite a bit fewer than the 10 million he says it will activate this year, but a sizable number nonetheless.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>An increasing number of people are watching video, including TV shows and movies, on their computers, instead of via traditional TV sets. </p>
<p>Many young people don&#8217;t even bother with a cable or satellite subscription and just use their PCs or Macs to get their video fix.</p>

<p>But computer screens are small, so some folks hook the computer up to the TV for their viewing sessions. The problem with this is that it can be complicated for the technically challenged. And it can involve long cables stretching across the floor, or leaving a computer you might want for other tasks permanently connected to the TV. So companies have been working on ways to beam Internet video wirelessly from your computer to your TV.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing two of these wireless PC-to-TV solutions. Both require a secondary device that remains connected to the TV to receive the wireless signal from the computer.</p>
<p>One product is a new system from Intel (INTC), several major laptop makers and the networking equipment company Netgear (NTGR). It&#8217;s called Intel Wireless Display, or Wi-Di for short. The other is a software product called PlayOn, from a company called MediaMall. It beams video to your TV through popular game consoles such as Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) PlayStation 3 and Nintendo&#8217;s Wii. Both of these products only work on Windows computers.</p>
<p>In my tests, both systems mostly worked as advertised, but each had some downsides. The Intel system works with any video from any site you can play on the computer, but the video disappears from the TV if you are playing it in full-screen mode and get the impulse to use the computer for any other purpose while it is playing. And it only works on a handful of new, specially equipped PCs. </p>
<p>The PlayOn system will work on an existing computer, and it keeps showing a video even if you choose to use the PC for some other task. But it can&#8217;t beam just any old video to the TV, only those from services PlayOn has enabled. For instance, you can watch TV shows and movies from Hulu (partly owned by News Corp., which also owns The Wall Street Journal and its Web sites) but not from your favorite random Web site.</p>
<p>Intel&#8217;s new Wi-Di system is so far only available on three specific laptop models, one each from Toshiba, Sony and Dell (DELL), that range from $900 to $1,050. And these laptops are so far only available from Best Buy (BBY). It also requires a small $100 adapter called Push2TV from Netgear, which comes free with these laptops. </p>
<p>Wi-Di requires computers equipped with Intel&#8217;s brand new 2010 Core processors, Intel&#8217;s graphics chips and Intel&#8217;s wireless chips. Netgear and Intel say the feature will be available on other PC models later in the year.</p>
<p>I tested Wi-Di with the $900 Toshiba E205, a capable laptop with a 14-inch screen. Setup was a breeze. I just plugged the Netgear box into my TV and pushed a special Wi-Di button on the Toshiba. I typed in a code number the first time I used it, and I was in business. </p>
<p>Instantly, anything showing on the Toshiba&#8217;s screen was wirelessly replicated on the TV screen, even though I was eight feet away. </p>
<p>I tested the system with YouTube, Hulu and many other Web sites with no hitches or glitches. I also played videos stored on the PC&#8217;s hard disk. </p>
<p>Video mostly played smoothly over Wi-Di, though the quality on the TV was a bit degraded from that on the laptop screen, and HD videos didn&#8217;t look nearly as good as normal HD TV broadcasts. Also, the system isn&#8217;t satisfying unless you are streaming a video that can be viewed in full-screen mode on the PC.</p>
<p>I tested PlayOn with a Lenovo ThinkPad laptop and a PlayStation 3. After hooking up the PS3, I installed the $40 PlayOn software, which runs in the background. I then navigated to the Video section of the Sony&#8217;s menu, found PlayOn listed and used the Sony&#8217;s remote control to select from supported services, which include YouTube, Hulu, Netflix (NFLX), <a href="http://www.cbs.com/">CBS.com</a> (CBS), Amazon (AMZN) Video on Demand, <a href="http://www.cnn.com/">CNN.com</a>,and <a href="http://espn.go.com/">ESPN.com</a>.</p>
<p>PlayOn also allows third-party plug-ins to add other Web video sources, such as <a href="http://www.nbc.com/">NBC.com</a>, but the company admits that the plug-in process can be clunky.</p>
<p>Video quality was about the same on PlayOn as on Wi-Di, and most programs played smoothly. With PlayOn, you don&#8217;t see the actual Web site, and you&#8217;re limited to the navigation system and options of the game console you&#8217;re using. So, I had to tediously find shows on the Sony by trolling through long lists.</p>
<p>PlayOn failed to display videos and photos stored on my PC, though to be fair the company lists this as a beta feature. And it displayed brief error messages frequently, even when it proceeded to play my chosen video properly.</p>
<p>PlayOn costs $40, and can be downloaded from <a href="http://www.playon.tv/">www.playon.tv</a>. You also must own or buy a game console, or one of a smattering of less- well-known TV adapters that the system supports.</p>
<p>Watching Internet video is a better experience with no wires to get in the way. But it can cost a lot, and needs some work. </p>

<ul>
<li> News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch tried to lower expectations that his Fox broadcast network would hire Conan O&#8217;Brien.</li>
<li>Murdoch hinted that his book publishing unit is in line to get a new deal on e-books from Amazon, just as Macmillan has demanded (as will other publishers).</li>
</ul>
<p>On the second point, here&#8217;s my on-the-fly transcription and paraphrasing of Murdoch&#8217;s comments about Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL) and e-book pricing. It&#8217;s one of the most candid descriptions you&#8217;ll hear from a top executive about Big Media&#8217;s reluctance to embrace digital distribution at the expense of its existing system and revenue:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>&#8220;We don’t like the Amazon model of $9.99&#8230;.We think it really devalues books and hurts all the retailers of hardcover books. We’re not against electronic books; on the contrary, we like them very much&#8221; because they cost us less to distribute, &#8220;but we want some room to maneuver.&#8221; <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100131/amazon-gives-in-to-macmillan-and-apple-and-e-book-prices-will-go-up/">The Apple deal</a>&#8230;&#8220;does allow some flexibility and higher prices&#8221; though e-books will still be lower than print versions. And now Amazon is willing to sit down with us again and renegotiate.</p></blockquote>
<p>UPDATE: Here&#8217;s a more complete transcript from <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/186147-news-corporation-f2q10-qtr-end-12-31-09-earnings-call-transcript?page=-1">Seeking Alpha</a>:</p>

It is low cost to us and so on. But we want some room to maneuver in it. Amazon, sorry Apple in its agreement with us which has not been disclosed in detail does allow for a variety of slightly higher prices.</p>
<p>There will be prices very much less than the printed copies of books but still will not be fixed in a way that Amazon has been doing it. It appears that Amazon is now ready to sit down with us again and renegotiate pricing.</p></blockquote>
<p>Again, it&#8217;s impossible to stress how scarring the music labels&#8217; experience has been for Big Media. And <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100127/the-music-industrys-cautionary-itunes-tale-resonates-with-publishers-and-apple/">they&#8217;re determined not to repeat the experience</a>. Their takeaway, though, seems to be that they can stave off digital distribution by keeping prices high and inventory relatively scarce. Hard to believe consumers are going to go for that.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">Earlier</h4>
<p>A first glimpse at News Corp.&#8217;s fourth-quarter <a href="http://www.newscorp.com/investor/download/NWS_Q2_2010.pdf">earnings</a> (which, due to the company&#8217;s weird fiscal calendar, is technically the company&#8217;s Q2 for 2010): Pretty good. And much better than a year ago (thankfully). After factoring out one-time charges, the company posted earnings of 25 cents on revenue of $8.7 billion.</p>
<p>The Street was looking for earnings of 20 cents on revenue of $8.23 billion, and analysts were also hoping the company would boost its earnings forecast, due in part to a bump from the ginormous success of &#8220;Avatar.&#8221; No word on guidance in the earnings release, though.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll pick through the release for other worthwhile nuggets for the next few minutes. And then the real show begins at 4:30 Eastern, when the company&#8217;s earnings call&#8211;easily the most entertaining one in its peer group due to the censor-free presence of CEO Rupert Murdoch&#8211;begins. We&#8217;ll be looking for commentary on his battle/negotiation with Google (GOOG), upcoming content deals with Apple and the iPad, his thoughts on paid content in general, a dash of political commentary or two, and an update on the turnaround effort at MySpace.</p>
<p>From the release: A pretty nice quarter at most of the conglomerate&#8217;s divisions, including the previously battered broadcast TV and newspaper groups. News Corp. says print revenue at The Wall Street Journal was up five percent and ads on the Journal&#8217;s digital network were up 17 percent.</p>
<p>MySpace and the company&#8217;s other digital properties, shuffled into the &#8220;other&#8221; category, don&#8217;t get much of a mention, but don&#8217;t seem to have done much, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091104/myspaces-work-in-progress-losing-money-traffic-blowing-google-guarantees/">not surprisingly</a>.</p>
<p>But News Corp does mention that digital media earnings were down $32 million compared with a year ago, &#8220;principally due to lower search and advertising revenue.&#8221; And the company lost $29 million on &#8220;digital media dispositions&#8221;&#8211;i.e., the fire sale/giveaways of properties like <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100104/first-ma-of-2010-flixster-rotten-tomatoes/">Rotten Tomatoes</a> and Photobucket.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p>CFO Dave DeVoe: &#8220;Extremely pleased&#8221; with the quarter.</p>
<p>Movies: Revenue up due to decent DVD sales (no <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100201/watch-hollywood-crater-in-a-single-sentence/">MGM problem</a> here). Also high costs due to &#8220;Avatar,&#8221; but big profits from the movie will be coming in during the next couple quarters.</p>
<p>Broadcast TV: Local ads are improving; the telecom, fast food, finance categories are all improving.</p>
<p>Cable: Revenue is up 18 percent. Affiliate revenue is up 21 percent (more money for Fox News subs), and there was a &#8220;single-digit&#8221; boost in ad dollars.</p>
<p>Newspapers: Journal dollars are up, operating costs down. Ad revenue got better as the quarter progressed.</p>
<p>Books: Revenue up, expenses down.</p>
<p>&#8220;Other&#8221;/MySpace: Digital media revenue down, but cost-cutting helped trim losses.</p>
<p>News Corp. is boosting its dividend by 25 percent.</p>
<p>Guidance: The company&#8217;s operating income growth rate is expected to grow from single digits to the high teens. Better than anticipated: Film group, TV and cable. But revenue goals for digital media, including MySpace, will take longer than anticipated.</p>
<p>Murdoch sings the praises of content. [I will not argue with him, for now]. &#8220;Avatar&#8221; is awesome, he says, a &#8220;harbinger of fundamental change in the industry.&#8221; Also really good: &#8220;Alvin and the Chipmunks.&#8221; Fun to hear Rupe say &#8220;Alvin and the Chipmunks.&#8221;</p>
<p>WSJ is the No.1 paper in U.S. in terms of circulation, influence, quality. WSJ.com is a &#8220;digital model for newspapers around the world.&#8221;</p>
<p>Fox News Channel&#8217;s audience is both &#8220;loyal and lucrative.&#8221; Roger Ailes is doing an &#8220;admirable job&#8221; [translation: Bite me, Michael Wolff--the author of a recent Murdoch biography].</p>
<p>Last year, Murdoch says, News Corp.&#8217;s pay-to-play ideas sounded nutty, but now &#8220;the content clan has gathered around our ideas.&#8221; Consumers must pay and will pay &#8220;to be entertained and informed.&#8221; All those awesome new gadgets being made in China and sold at the Consumer Electronics Show need content or they&#8217;re worthless. <p>Murdoch says he&#8217;ll be wringing more dollars from cable operators. And &#8220;when it comes to online news, we&#8217;ll be changing that model too,&#8221; adding that News Corp. is in &#8220;substantive conversations with device makers on developing subscription models&#8221; to deliver content. And don&#8217;t forget about 3-D!</p>
<p>Not performing well but &#8220;long-term growth drivers&#8221;: Sky Italia satellite service. Also Sky Deutschland. And MySpace is &#8220;not yet where we want it.&#8221; In the last quarter, however, MySpace &#8220;started to see signs of traffic stabilization.&#8221;</p>

<h4 class="subhed">Q&amp;A</h4>
<p><strong>Question: How big a deal is retransmission consent in coming years? $40 million a month? $100 million a month?</strong></p>
<p>Chase Carey: No numbers, but it&#8217;s going to be a &#8220;transforming event.&#8221; We have two of top 10 distributors done, more coming. It&#8217;s a three- or four-year process to knock these deals out.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Does this fix the broadcast model?</strong></p>
<p>Carey: &#8220;Yes, I guess you could say simplistically, it fixes it.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s the timing on an &#8220;Avatar&#8221; DVD, and what about a sequel? Also, how do TV ads look this year?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: For &#8220;Avatar,&#8221; we think about 60 percent of profits will be in the next six months. Which means the DVD will be coming &#8220;as soon as possible,&#8221; but the movie will stay in cinemas for a while because we&#8217;re doing huge dollars in theaters still. Sequel? &#8220;Very early talks about it. Jim has ideas for one. We haven&#8217;t come to any agreement with him&#8230;.Being Jim Cameron, I wouldn&#8217;t hold your breath for an early one.&#8221; Asked about the economics of a future release (&#8220;Will you keep the same revenue split?&#8221;), Rupe sort of rumbles  and growls and sort of doesn&#8217;t have much to say. &#8220;Ask anybody; it is very easy to drop a $100 million in a hurry on a film, and we&#8217;d like to lay off some of the risk.&#8221;</p>
<p>Carey: TV trends for this year are &#8220;positive.&#8221; </p>
<p>Murdoch: TV stations will be up 18 or 19 percent, but last year was terrible. We&#8217;re still down compared with two years ago. Hard to see more than a quarter in advance. In newspapers, it&#8217;s hard to see more than a few weeks.</p>
<p><em>[Missed a question on Sky Italia here.]</em></p>
<p><strong>Q: What are growth prospects for cable networks? They&#8217;ve been driven a lot recently by new subscriber fees. How much longer can you get those boosts?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: Overall, &#8220;we think we have great potential for growth. Quite a long way to go yet.&#8221; Look at how NBCU&#8217;s USA is growing.</p>
<p>Carey: In the U.S., we&#8217;re moving to &#8220;quality over quantity&#8221;&#8211;we can wring more out of foreign exchange, etc. Fox News is only getting more powerful; it has &#8220;great upside.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: Regarding newspapers, what growth came from organic increase versus currency fluctuations?</strong></p>
<p>The majority is from foreign exchange.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Does your guidance assume that the &#8220;Avatar&#8221; DVD is coming in the next two quarters?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: &#8220;Yes, but it won&#8217;t be 3-D&#8221; [which I don't think the analyst was asking about].</p>
<p><strong>Q: Back to retransmission consent: You&#8217;ve been getting more and more money from cable guys. Why can&#8217;t you get $4 or $5 per subscription for Fox broadcast subs?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: &#8220;We&#8217;re modest people.&#8221;</p>
<p>Carey: Hyuk, hyuk. Real answer: It takes time. &#8220;We try to approach this constructively. We&#8217;ve built businesses with [cable guys], we&#8217;ve built valuable cable channels&#8221; [translation: patience!]. We want to extract more without killing the cable guys. </p>
<p>Murdoch: That said, we&#8217;re asking for the same thing [for broadcast channels] that the cable networks are getting, which &#8220;certainly won&#8217;t kill the cable companies.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: Please talk about value of film libraries (i.e., MGM). They&#8217;re generating big operating profits for cable now. How long will this last?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: Regarding the MGM auction, &#8220;you can count us out of that one altogether&#8221; because others will pay more than we&#8217;re willing. And we&#8217;re not pursuing the Miramax catalog at all. </p>
<p>Carey: A film library by itself, without new stuff coming through, is a &#8220;depreciating asset.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: On guidance: You say the ad market getting better, etc., but it sounds like you&#8217;re saying Ebidta growth is slowing.</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: &#8220;We honestly do not have any visibility about the last quarter.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: On books/e-books/Apple, what&#8217;s going on with that?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: We don&#8217;t like the Amazon model of $9.99&#8230;.We think it really devalues books and hurts all the retailers of hardcover books. We&#8217;re not against electronic books; on the contrary, we like them very much, lower costs to us, but we want some room to maneuver. The Apple deal does allow &#8220;some flexibility and higher prices&#8221; though e-books will still be lower than print. And now Amazon is willing to sit down with us again.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Press Q&amp;A</h4>
<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s up with plans to charge for newspapers on the Web?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: &#8220;Not ready to announce yet [long pause]. We won&#8217;t be ready yet to make an announcement.&#8221; A &#8220;lot of talks with a lot of people.&#8221; There will be more to say within the next two months, Murdoch adds.</p>
<p><strong>Q: Are you still going to fall $100 million short on the Google deal?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: Yes. People using social networks don&#8217;t use search a great deal. Facebook has seen this, too. It&#8217;s &#8220;really too early to make confident predictions&#8230;but from going down, we&#8217;re beginning to go up.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Q: Can we get some details about Time Warner Cable (TWC) deal?</strong></p>
<p>Nope.</p>
<p><strong>What about Conan O&#8217;Brien on late night?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: If the programming people can show us we can do it and make a profit on it, we&#8217;ll do it in a flash. I&#8217;m sure there have been conversations with Conan, but &#8220;if you mean real negotiations, no.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>[Missed two questions here.]</em></p>
<p><strong>Q: Another late-night question: If you do go into negotiations with Conan, how do you placate your affiliates?</strong></p>
<p>Murdoch: It&#8217;s a different deal than NBC. They screwed up 10 pm, which reduced the lead-in to local news. Our affiliates run syndicated programming at 11:30, though, so it will take time to adjust there.</p>

<p>Last week, BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091203/boomtown-decodes-google-ceo-schmidts-shut-up-you-whiny-news-folk-op-ed-so-you-dont-have-to">translated an opinion piece written by Google CEO Eric Schmidt</a> and published in The Wall Street Journal that focused on defending the search giant from criticism that it was, well, killing journalism.</p>
<p>One of the louder critics, in fact,  has been Rupert Murdoch, chairman and CEO of News Corp. (NWS), who has been loaded for bear in regard to Google (GOOG), leveling a series of high-profile verbal attacks on the company.</p>
<p>Last week, Murdoch <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704107104574570191223415268.html">published his own piece in The Journal</a>, which he owns (along with this Web site), on the topic of the wrenching changes in the news business and in which he never mentioned Google by name.</p>
<p>But the company was there anyway, so, in the interests of equal opportunity balloon-pricking, I must also render Murdoch&#8217;s post through my decoding machine, because it&#8217;s only sporting!</p>
<p>His op-ed, The Journal noted, &#8220;has been adapted from his Dec. 1 remarks before the Federal Trade Commission&#8217;s workshop on journalism and the Internet.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em><strong>Journalism and Freedom</p>
<p>Government assistance is a greater threat to the press than any new technology.</p>

<p><strong>Translation:</strong> Crikey, as they say in Australia, I have been getting a little wobbly over Google&#8217;s growing power, but those bludgers in government will always make me go more troppo.</p>
<p>And, unlike Eric Schmidt, I didn&#8217;t need to be called Emperor Palpatine to scare people. Plain old &#8220;Rupe&#8221; works just fine to give most people the shakes.</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>We are at a time when many news enterprises are shutting down or scaling back. No doubt you will hear some tell you that journalism is in dire shape, and the triumph of digital is to blame.</p>
<p>My message is just the opposite. The future of journalism is more promising than ever&#8211;limited only by editors and producers unwilling to fight for their readers and viewers, or government using its heavy hand either to overregulate or subsidize us.</em></p>

<p><strong>Translation:</strong> Please try to ignore the salient fact that it was actually Rupert Murdoch&#8211;<em>me!</em>&#8211;who has been loudly clanging the bell of late about how Google is laying waste to journalism, much as Sean Hannity did to that poor Alan Colmes nightly for a dozen years.</p>
<p>Also, please ignore that I am saying my message is just the opposite, because&#8211;really&#8211;I hate government more than I hate Google, so this makes perfect sense if you really think about it.</p>
<p>But don&#8217;t think about it, mate!</p>
<p><strong>Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>From the beginning, newspapers have prospered for one reason: The trust that comes from representing their readers&#8217; interests and giving them the news that&#8217;s important to them. That means covering the communities where they live, exposing government or business corruption, and standing up to the rich and powerful.</p>
<p>Technology now allows us to do this on a much greater scale. That means we have the means to reach billions of people who until now have had no honest or independent sources of the information they need to rise in society, hold their governments accountable, and pursue their needs and dreams.</p>
<p>Does this mean we are all going to succeed? Of course not. Some newspapers and news organizations will not adapt to the digital realities of our day&#8211;and they will fail. We should not blame technology for these failures. The future of journalism belongs to the bold, and the companies that prosper will be those that find new and better ways to meet the needs of their viewers, listeners, and readers.</em></p>

<p><strong>Translation:</strong> Teri: Cue the speech about what journalism means for the little people! But also make sure we get in how News Corp. gets all this digital hoo-ha too and how we are not going to let those pointy-heads of Silicon Valley think we are not ready to rumble!</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>First, media companies need to give people the news they want. I can&#8217;t tell you how many papers I have visited where they have a wall of journalism prizes&#8211;and a rapidly declining circulation. This tells me the editors are producing news for themselves&#8211;instead of news that is relevant to their customers. A news organization&#8217;s most important asset is the trust it has with its readers, a bond that reflects the readers&#8217; confidence that editors are looking out for their needs and interests.</em></p>

<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>At News Corp., we have been working for two years on a project that would use a portion of our broadcast spectrum to bring our TV offerings&#8211;and maybe even our newspaper content&#8211;to mobile devices. Today&#8217;s news consumers do not want to be chained to a box in their homes or offices to get their favorite news and entertainment&#8211;and our plan includes the needs of the next wave of TV viewing by going mobile.</p>
<p>The same is true with newspapers. More and more, our readers are using different technologies to access our papers during different parts of the day. For example, they might read some of their Wall Street Journal on their BlackBerries while commuting into the office, read it on the computer when they arrive, and read it on a larger and clearer e-reader wherever they may be.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> Teri: Tell Jon Miller to get on a plane stat and start chit-chatting with those Asian manufacturers asap. I am not going to let Amazon (AMZN) head Jeff Bezos guffaw me into oblivion with his Kindle or have &#8220;American Idol&#8221; get hijacked by Apple (AAPL) or have those Google (GOOG) twins shine me on, even as they are developing some magic mobile phone.</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>My second point follows from my first: Quality content is not free. In the future, good journalism will depend on the ability of a news organization to attract customers by providing news and information they are willing to pay for.</p>
<p>The old business model based mainly on advertising is dead. Let&#8217;s face it: A business model that relies primarily on online advertising cannot sustain newspapers over the long term. The reason is simple arithmetic. Though online advertising is increasing, that increase is only a fraction of what is being lost with print advertising.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s not going to change, even in a boom. The reason is that the old model was founded on quasimonopolies, such as classified advertising, which has been decimated by new and cheaper competitors such as Craigslist, Monster.com, and so on.</em></p>

<p>And, frankly, the old media have been lending out Bessie to every Web site that comes looking for a gallon, free of charge, in abject fear that no one likes milk anymore.</p>
<p>In the good old days, when we were the only beverage around&#8211;I like to call it a &#8220;quasi<em>MOO</em>nopoly&#8221;&#8211;we could set any price we wanted.</p>
<p>Now, unfortunately, everybody&#8217;s got milk.</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>In the new business model, we will be charging consumers for the news we provide on our Internet sites. The critics say people won&#8217;t pay. I believe they will, but only if we give them something of good and useful value. Our customers are smart enough to know that you don&#8217;t get something for nothing.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> People will pay, once we de-index our sites from Google and they can&#8217;t get their daily dose of the New York Post&#8217;s Page Six for free. Where else will they get the latest online tidbits on the Tiger Woods scandal, for example?</p>

<p>Okay, from everywhere. But Page Six names at least 46 percent more mistresses than TMZ, and that&#8217;s worth something.</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>That goes for some of our friends online too. And yet there are those who think they have a right to take our news content and use it for their own purposes without contributing a penny to its production. Some rewrite, at times without attribution, the news stories of expensive and distinguished journalists who invested days, weeks or even months in their stories&#8211;all under the tattered veil of &#8220;fair use.&#8221;</p>
<p>These people are not investing in journalism. They are feeding off the hard-earned efforts and investments of others. And their almost wholesale misappropriation of our stories is not &#8220;fair use.&#8221; To be impolite, it&#8217;s theft.</p>
<p>Right now, content creators bear all the costs, while aggregators enjoy many of the benefits. In the long term, this is untenable. We are open to different pay models. But the principle is clear: To paraphrase a famous economist, there&#8217;s no such thing as a free news story, and we are going to ensure that we get a fair but modest price for the value we provide.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> By &#8220;friends,&#8221; I mean &#8220;sworn enemies,&#8221; also known as &#8220;Google.&#8221; (Until it meets with me to do a deal and then it is &#8220;friends&#8221; again.)</p>

<p>By &#8220;there&#8217;s no such thing as a free news story,&#8221; I mean &#8220;I hope to trick those Google-obsessed Bing boys at Microsoft (MSFT) into paying me that boatload of money they aren&#8217;t sending Carol Bartz of Yahoo (YHOO).&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>Finally, a few words about government. In the last two or three decades, we have seen the emergence of new platforms and opportunities that no one could have predicted&#8211;from social networking sites and iPhones and BlackBerries, to Internet sites for newspapers, radio and television. And we are only at the beginning.</p>
<p>The government has a role here. Unfortunately, too many of the mechanisms government uses to regulate the news and information business in this new century are based on 20th-century assumptions and business models. If we are really concerned about the survival of newspapers and other journalistic enterprises, the best thing government can do is to get rid of the arbitrary and contradictory regulations that actually prevent people from investing in these businesses.</p>
<p>One example of outdated thinking is the FCC&#8217;s cross-ownership rule that prevents people from owning, say, a television station and a newspaper in the same market. Many of these rules were written when competition was limited because of the huge up-front costs. If you are a newspaper today, your competition is not necessarily the TV station in the same city. It can be a Web site on the other side of the world, or even an icon on someone&#8217;s cell phone.</p>
<p>These developments mean increased competition, and that is good for consumers. But just as businesses are adapting to new realities, the government needs to adapt too. In this new and more globally competitive news world, restricting cross-ownership between television and newspapers makes as little sense as would banning newspapers from having Web sites.</em></p>

<p><strong>Translation:</strong> Oh, I do not like Silicon Valley, but I dislike government even more!</p>
<p>And now that Google is its bogeyman instead of me, I really hope to finally be able to gut all those annoying cross-ownership rules that prevented me from owning the entire media landscape of every major city in America.</p>
<p>This must be done immediately, because those icons on people&#8217;s cellphones&#8211;especially that dangerous iFart app&#8211;are poised for attack!</p>
<p><strong>What Murdoch wrote:</strong> <em>In my view, the growing drumbeat for government assistance for newspapers is as alarming as overregulation. One idea gaining in popularity is providing taxpayer funds for journalists. Or giving newspapers &#8220;nonprofit&#8221; status&#8211;in exchange, of course, for papers giving up their right to endorse political candidates. The most damning problem with government &#8220;help&#8221; is what we saw with the bailout of the U.S. auto industry: Help props up those who are producing things that customers do not want.</p>
<p>The prospect of the U.S. government becoming directly involved in commercial journalism ought to be chilling for anyone who cares about freedom of speech. The Founding Fathers knew that the key to independence was to allow enterprises to prosper and serve as a counterweight to government power. It is precisely because newspapers make profits and do not depend on the government for their livelihood that they have the resources and wherewithal to hold the government accountable.</em></p>

<p>Barring that, whether the newspaper of the future is delivered with electrons or dead trees is ultimately not that important.</p>
<p>What is most important is that the news industry shake down big piles of dough from those Silicon Valley moneybags&#8211;whether they be Google or that Mark Zuckerberg kid, whenever Facebook goes public, or those Twitter dudes (if they figure out a way to make any money outside of fund raising)&#8211;in order to remain free, independent&#8211;and competitive.</p>
<p>It is, after all, the American way.</p>

Monday, the company released an <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5420524/mark-the-spot-iphone-app-tells-att-where-they-suck">iPhone application that lets users report subpar network performance</a>. Called Mark the Spot <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/at-t-mark-the-spot/id338307313?mt=8">(iTunes link)</a>, the app uses geolocation to pinpoint the iPhone’s location and offers users a menu of complaints from which to choose: Dropped call, failed call, no coverage, data failure, and poor data quality. That information is then passed on to AT&#038;T’s (T) operations team, which uses it to fine-tune network performance.</p>
<p>A welcome and proactive move for AT&#038;T, which has been just murdered by widespread complaints about the quality, coverage and speed of its network lately. That said, it is somewhat remarkable to learn that AT&#038;T isn’t really sure of where, exactly, the holes in its network are.</p>

<p>Google answered <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091203/two-microsoft-search-dudes-talk-about-bing-boomtowns-flip-is-waiting-by-the-phone-for-the-google-search-gurus-call/">BoomTown&#8217;s blatantly begging plea</a> to call, write or just say hi after I was inundated with news about Bing search from Microsoft (MSFT) this week&#8211;emailing yesterday about a &#8220;search event&#8221; to be held Monday in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>It will be at the Computer History Museum, and the PR minion who wrote  me (see email below) noted &#8220;there&#8217;ll be lots of news.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>News?</em> Well, you don&#8217;t have to ask me and my Flip twice!</p>
<p>Included in the confab will be Google VP of Search Products &#038; User Experience Marissa Mayer, VP of Engineering and Renaissance man Vic Gundotra and Google Fellow Amit Singhal, who is known as the master of ranking algorithm and search quality.</p>
<p>Already, I feel dumber than a box of hammers. But, can I resist? Of course not!</p>
<p>Sources tell me the event is for unveiling a wide range of feature updates to the Google service, probably to take some of its search innovations out for a showy walk around the park before Bing sucks up all the PR oxygen.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the note I got:</p>

Riffing on the tagline from Apple’s iPhone commercials, it essentially turns <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090821/iphone-owners-would-like-to-replace-battery-att/">widespread complaints about the quality, coverage and speed of AT&#038;T’s network</a> into a Verizon marketing campaign&#8211;if it wasn’t that already. &#8220;Browse the Web and download music and apps, at 3G speed, in five times more places than the nation&#8217;s number two wireless carrier,” the ad suggests. &#8220;Before you pick a phone, pick a network.&#8221;</p>
<p>Quite the sucker punch from Verizon, and a well-timed one too.  AT&#038;T’s iPhone exclusivity deal is set to expire sometime next year. And recent reports suggest that Apple, by signing on Verizon as a second carrier partner, could <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090601/iphone-verizon/">double U.S. iPhone sales in the near term</a>. Verizon (VZ) pointing a mocking finger at AT&#038;T (T) in an ad like this certainly isn&#8217;t going to do anything to make AT&#038;T&#8217;s negotiations with Apple (AAPL) go any more smoothly.</p>

When <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-ipods/">Apple added a video camera</a> to its cheap and tiny iPod nano last week, the digerati <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/digitalcameras/?p=1763">heaped dirt on the camcorder&#8217;s grave</a>.</p>
<p>You know what? I think the conventional wisdom is right on this one. Take a look at this clever test from <a href="http://newteevee.com/2009/09/12/hands-on-ipod-nano-vs-flip-sd/">NewTeeVee</a>, which compares the nano&#8217;s new camera with a Flip Ultra SD.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="350" height="218" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="src" value="http://blip.tv/play/AYGfvwgC" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="350" height="218" src="http://blip.tv/play/AYGfvwgC" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>The good folks at NewTeeVee declare that the Flip&#8217;s camera offers a &#8220;MUCH better picture,&#8221; and since they did the work here I won&#8217;t argue with them.</p>
<p>But I don&#8217;t think the gap between the two cameras is big enough to help Flip. If you&#8217;re really serious about video quality, you&#8217;re probably not carrying a Flip to begin with. And given the choice between a video camera that takes a decent picture and one that also lets you listen to music, watch movies and play games&#8230;well, that&#8217;s a tough sell, even if you&#8217;ve got Cisco&#8217;s (CSCO) marketing dollars backing you up.</p>
<p>In other words, Apple (AAPL) has passed my <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090818/mediocrity-rules-why-the-iphones-crummy-camera-is-flickrs-favorite/">&#8220;good enough&#8221;</a> test. The nano doesn&#8217;t do the job as well as a single-use device, but it&#8217;s adequate for my needs. The only question for me is whether I spring for a nano now, or hold off in the hopes that the iPod touch line gets a camera sooner than later.</p>

<p>Citing some decidedly unscientific poll data, Jesup and Lamont analyst Kevin Dede suggests <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090720/palm-valuation-not-all-its-cracked-up-to-be/">the device is plagued by build-quality issues</a> and a high exchange/return rate, potentially 40 percent. Abramsky says it&#8217;s between two and three percent and calls BS on the build-quality issue.</p>
<p>&#8220;Most buyers appear delighted with their new Pre user experience,” Abramsky said in a research note Friday. “Pre satisfaction appears higher than legacy Palm devices (e.g., Treo), affirming improved execution from the &#8216;New&#8217; Palm, including engineering, manufacturing, quality and process improvements.&#8221;</p>
<p>So, Pre sales are slowing. Or, they’re not.</p>
<p>And exchange/return rates are high.</p>
<p>Unless they’re not.</p>
<p>And these analysts are on point.</p>
<p>Unless, of course, they’re not. Too bad it’s impossible to tell without official numbers from Palm (PALM) or Sprint (S).</p>
