God Save the Queen: The Arianna Invasion of Britain Begins!

The U.K. version of the Huffington Post, which has been expected, went live today. It is the site’s first major international expansion beyond North America (Canada was first). And, while the content is aimed at the audience there, it will still have the usual HuffPo mix of saucy news, videos and blogs. Except with a charming British accent.

Queen Sarah and Duchess BoomTown Talk Yahoo Layoffs on KQED Radio

Yesterday, TechCrunch Senior Editor Sarah Lacy and I went on Michael Krasny’s Forum show on San Francisco’s KQED public radio station to talk about the Yahoo layoffs earlier this week. During the talk, Lacy declared herself queen, so I dubbed myself a duchess. Thus, we are blog site royalty, which I compared to being the rulers of Latvia. Sorry, Latvia!

Another One Bites the Dust at Yahoo: Chief Technologist Sam Pullara Departs for Benchmark

Yahoo Chief Technologist Sam Pullara is leaving the company to become an Entrepreneur in Residence at Benchmark Capital. BoomTown inquired about the departure earlier in the week and got a call from Yahoo PR today confirming the move. He’s the second major exec to leave Yahoo for greener pastures in a week. The company’s head of North American Revenue, Joanne Bradford, quit Monday to take a top job at social media start-up Demand Media.

Viral Video: The Muppets Do "Bohemian Rhapsody"

While BoomTown is trapped on, oops, fully enjoying, an overnight train trip to Portland for the holidays (and just beginning to sweat from not enough broadband), here’s a very funny video of the Muppets doing Queen. The puppets–part of Disney’s Muppets Studio–just got themselves a channel on YouTube and this is one of their most popular posts so far.

Today, BoomTown has traveled to England to see the Queen, but mostly to attend and speak at a conference at the University of Oxford, titled “Oxford Social Media Convention: Assessing the Evolution, Impact and Potential of Social Media.” In other words: What is up with this Twitter thing, but in a British accent.

Kara Visits London (to See the Queen Again)

Actually, although BoomTown is staying right around the corner from Buckingham Palace in Mayfair, I am in London on my way to the PICNIC conference in Amsterdam later this week, where I will be interviewing some digital leaders onstage. We’re still working on rolling out a version of our D: All Things Digital conference in Europe next fall, so it’s important to get a sense of what is going on here in the digital sector and, of course, what is not.
