<p>According to numerous sources close to the situation, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer recently met with top execs at Hulu, the premium video service whose big media company owners have been considering selling it for some months. </p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo is &#8220;in the process,&#8221; although the Silicon Valley Internet giant has not made any kind of formal bid. Other players whom sources said are considering purchasing all or parts of Hulu include: Former News Corp. COO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130405/peter-chernin-wants-hulu-too/">Peter Chernin</a>, who now has a successful and well-funded multimedia and investment company called the Chernin Group; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130325/hulu-isnt-for-sale-yet-but-buyers-are-asking/">Guggenheim Partners</a> digital arm, which is led by former Yahoo interim CEO Ross Levinsohn; and Amazon. </p>
<p>Sources said Mayer also had an extensive getting-to-know-you meeting, which was apparently not held at Hulu&#8217;s offices in Santa Monica, Calif., along with COO Henrique De Castro. The discussion is taking place in the wake of Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130430/yahoo-scraps-deal-for-french-video-site/">failed bid</a> &#8212; largely engineered by De Castro &#8212; to purchase a majority stake in France Télécom&#8217;s Dailymotion video service, after a top French government official said Yahoo could not own 75 percent of the company. </p>
<p>Had the deal &#8212; which was reportedly valued at $300 million &#8212; gone through, it would have been the most significant by Mayer since she took over at the company last July. Thus far, she has limited her purchases to small mobile startup.</p>
<p>While the meetings with Hulu are only preliminary, Yahoo has been to this video rodeo before, having seriously considering buying Hulu when it was previously being shopped by its owners, News Corp., Disney and Comcast. (News Corp. also owns this site.)</p>
<p>Of course, if Yahoo&#8217;s interest becomes more serious, Mayer will have to make important visits to top execs at those media giants, since they control the rights to critical content, and thus Hulu&#8217;s value.</p>
<p>As Peter Kafka noted in a previous post about Hulu&#8217;s possible sale, &#8220;much hinges on the licensing rights News Corp., Disney and Comcast would provide for the money-losing site, as well as what happens to the $300 million debt its owners have taken on in the last year.&#8221;</p>
<p>Without those rights, Hulu by itself is a very pretty Web site and video platform, but not worth the billions it would be with very long-term television rights, content that attracts users. Currently, sources said its media owners are offering two to three years of rights, with a lot of flexibility over removing content from the site, which is not quite as attractive a deal (to say the least). </p>
<p>But video is a key component of Yahoo&#8217;s strategy going forward. Along with mobile efforts, Mayer has explicitly told investors that video was a key to company under her tenure.</p>
<p>Coincidentally, today in an onstage interview at a Wired conference in New York, Mayer broadly addressed the video issue when asked a question about the topic, noting it was important across all of Yahoo&#8217;s properties. </p>
<p>&#8220;I think video is really important &#8230; video is something that we&#8217;re all innately designed and born to experience, everyone is born being able to watch and to hear,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Video is just this amazing format.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mayer would know that well, having been at Google when the search giant bought YouTube, ironically snatching it at the last minute from a competing bid by Yahoo, which was then led by Terry Semel. Since then, YouTube has become the most important and powerful player in the space by far.</p>
<p>Yahoo, despite being one of the largest video players on the Web, has mostly been a lackluster competitor in the arena, pinging over the years from creating original content to doing branded deals with media companies, but never establishing a major beachhead with consumers as Hulu did from scratch.</p>
<p>Short of a full acquisition, there may be a way for Yahoo to partner and invest in Hulu, instead of buying it outright that works for all sides &#8212; owners get a new owner to foot part of the bill and also increase distribution, and Yahoo can claim that it&#8217;s providing users with exponentially more content that would help Yahoo&#8217;s long-declining engagement problem.</p>
<p>Sources said News Corp. and Disney have mulled scenarios where one or both companies hang on to the site, while Comcast has no control over Hulu&#8217;s fate, having given up its management rights to the site as a concession to federal regulators.</p>
<p>But the strength of the Hulu brand is clear and it has had some success in building a more significant business. While a lot of its video offerings are free, about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130430/hulus-pitch-to-advertisers-4-million-people-pay-us-to-see-your-ads/">four million people are paying for a Hulu Plus subscription</a>.</p>
<p>Still, Hulu&#8217;s strength might be lagging, especially given after talented founding leader Jason Kilar recently left. Last year, Hulu <a href="ttp://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2012/5/comScore_Releases_April_2012_U.S._Online_Video_Rankings">was a top 10 video site</a>, according to comScore. No longer &#8212; <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2013/4/comScore_Releases_March_2013_U.S._Online_Video_Rankings">in a report in March</a>, it had dropped out of the top 10. </p>
<p>While this likely has more to do with methodology than real decline in Hulu ratings, it does show that while it&#8217;s the biggest thing Yahoo could buy or invest in, Yahoo itself has plenty of video views, many more than Hulu. </p>
<p>The question for Mayer then is how much of Yahoo&#8217;s multi-billon-dollar cash kitty she wants to bet on a big video play. She might also be considering buying several smaller ones, said sources, with Yahoo having also looked at some smaller video sites, including Blip and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130308/heres-a-marissa-mayer-ma-candidate-you-havent-heard-of/">Grab Media</a>.</p>
<p>A spokeswoman for Hulu declined to comment and Yahoo PR has not responded to a query for comment (if ever). </p>

<p>Earlier today in trading, shares of Apple briefly dropped below $500 for the first time since February, largely due to more rating cuts by Wall Street analysts.</p>
<p>The stock did manage to rally later, ending up on a slight rise of 1.8 percent to close at $518.83 for the day. </p>
<p>But the worries are increasing about the usually high-flying stock, which is down almost 26 percent over the last three months. (That said, Apple shares are up just above 28 percent for the year to date.)</p>
<p>Still, analysts are fretting, such as Citigroup, which had only recently initiated coverage with a buy rating for Apple at the end of November. Last night, it moved to a neutral rating and slashed the price target for shares from $675 to $575. </p>
<p>The biggest new worry is the sales of Apple&#8217;s latest device, with Citi&#8217;s Glen Yeung noting that &#8220;near-term supply chain order cuts, while inconclusive in nature, bring into question the strength of iPhone 5.&#8221;</p>
<p>Citi is one of several downgrades of late for Apple; today&#8217;s included dings from Canaccord Genuity and Pacific Crest Securities.</p>
<p>Now, without another product in the immediate pipeline and fears that the company&#8217;s competitiveness in the smartphone market is waning, the Cupertino, Calif., company is in the unique position of needing a new &#8220;wow&#8221; product in the months ahead to spur a rally.</p>
<p>There are some bright spots, though. Apple said it had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121216/apple-says-iphone-5-sales-topped-two-million-in-china-during-first-weekend/">sold two million iPhone 5&rsquo;s over the weekend in China</a> and a new <a href="http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2012/12/17/apple-iphone-ipad-sales-morgan-stanley/">Morgan Stanley report</a> is indicating that iPhone and also iPad demand remain high.</p>
<p>But, while there has been swirl around a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121212/apple-tests-designs-for-tv/">new take by Apple related to the television</a>, many investors and also fans (see this <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121217/all-i-want-for-xmas-is-my-apple-tv/">great essay by Brightcove CEO Jeremy Allaire</a>) are clearly hoping for even more. </p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A handful of analysts issued report cards today on Groupon that raise a lot of concerns about how the 3-year-old daily deals company will evolve over the next couple of years.</p>

<p>In midday trading, the company&#8217;s shares fell 5 percent to $22.09 a share. Even so, that&#8217;s up from late last month, when the Chicago company <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111128/groupon-stock-now-half-off-whats-the-deal/">traded as low as $15.24 a share</a>, or roughly half of what some investors paid on day one.</p>
<p>The company is like a student in high school who still needs to push in order to get accepted into an Ivy League school. Even though it&#8217;s likely a shoo-in &#8212; and it&#8217;s already gone public &#8212; there&#8217;s no leeway for senioritis.</p>
<p>Most of the analysts&#8217; evaluations were concerned about risks, such as the company&#8217;s short operating history, the prospects for growth now that it has gotten so large and intense competition coming from peers like LivingSocial, Amazon and Google among many others.</p>
<p>&#8220;While much execution lies ahead in order to meet expectations, the opportunity is large and Groupon has competitive advantages,&#8221; according to Barclays Capital, which had a neutral rating and a price target of $27.</p>
<p>J.P. Morgan also gave Groupon a neutral rating, but set a lower price target of $24 a share because there was still a lot to do despite its first-mover advantage.</p>
<p>&#8220;As subscriber growth slows, we project a major profitability ramp for Groupon over the next two years. However, we believe this ramp is largely anticipated and its magnitude leaves little room for error in execution and operations at current levels,&#8221; the analyst wrote.</p>
<p>Citigroup&#8217;s Mark Mahaney had the harshest words, saying he was &#8220;waiting for a better deal.&#8221;</p>
<p>He attributed his neutral stance and $24 price target to the lack of success in the company&#8217;s new segments, such as real-time offers, vacation packages and physical goods. &#8220;That, we believe, could take significant time to prove out,&#8221; Mahaney explained.</p>
<p>Nearly all the analysts were also concerned about the upcoming expiration date for a lock-up period. Expected in May 2012, it would allow some early investors and employees to dump the stock.</p>
<p>In other words, we could see a lot of people cashing in their vouchers right as the offer expires.</p>

<p>Moody&#8217;s downgraded Nokia&#8217;s senior debt rating to Baa2, the second lowest investment-grade rating, from A3, with a negative outlook. It also cut Nokia&#8217;s senior unsecured medium-term note program to (P)Baa2 from (P)A3 and its senior unsecured regular bond/debenture to Baa2 from A3.</p>

<p>Recently, BoomTown reported that Flixster&#8211;the popular social movie site whose brands include the Rotten Tomatoes premium reviews site&#8211;was in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110316/100-percent-fresh-exclusive-flixsterrotten-tomatoes-in-acquisition-talks-with-yahoo-and-others">early acquisition discussions with several suitors</a>.</p>
<p>Now, said sources, Warner Bros. appears to be the frontrunner in various talks to buy the entertainment site, while Internet giant Yahoo has dropped out due to price concerns.</p>
<p>The reason for interest from the Time Warner-owned studio, said sources, is due to a spate of recent digital efforts, including its expansion of a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110327/warner-bros-tries-more-facebook-movies-and-a-new-price/">movie rental experiment on Facebook</a>.</p>
<p>As MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka wrote last night:</p>
<blockquote class="memo><p>Earlier this month, Time Warner&#8217;s studio started letting <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110308/youtube-netflix-hulu-meet-facebook/">Facebook users watch &#8220;The Dark Knight&#8221;</a> on the social network for $3. Now it has added five more movies, and is asking more money for three recent releases: It will cost you 40 Facebook Credits&#8211;the equivalent of $4&#8211;to rent &#8220;Inception,” “Life As We Know It” and “Yogi Bear” on the site. The first two &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221; movies, however, are at the original price.</p></blockquote>
<p>Flixster has a strong presence on the Silicon Valley social networking giant, which could make it a good vehicle to attract people to the movie rental effort, as well as a popular mobile app.</p>
<p>Interestingly, Rotten Tomatoes was once owned outright by another traditional media giant: News Corp.</p>
<p>It is now <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100104/first-ma-of-2010-flixster-rotten-tomatoes/">only a minority shareholder</a>, after trading Rotten Tomatoes for a 20 percent stake in the combined entity a little over a year ago.</p>
<p>News Corp., which owns 20th Century Fox Studios, is not bidding for Flixster, several sources said.</p>
<p>The price being discussed for the San Francisco-based start-up is between $60 million and $90 million.</p>
<p>Any acquisition negotiations could always fail, of course. In fact, Flixster held advanced discussions in late 2007 with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071204/flixster-for-sale-again/">IAC/InterActiveCorp</a>.</p>
<p>Flixster trades all kinds of recommendations, ratings and news and even posts user-generated movie reviews on its Web site and via widgets on social networking sites, mostly on Facebook, and on mobile devices.</p>
<p>Co-founded in 2006 by CEO Joe Greenstein and CTO Saran Chari, Flixster has raised $7 million in venture funding from Lightspeed Venture Partners and Pinnacle Ventures, as well as garnering angel investments, such as from Silicon Valley entrepreneur and LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman.</p>
<p>The combination with Rotten Tomatoes and its more robust Web presence made a lot of sense. It features mostly premium content, including professional reviews, trailer videos and news.</p>
<p>The site is famous for its clever fresh and rotten tomato rating system for movies.</p>
<p>I have not received a response from emails sent to Flixster and Warner Bros. requesting comment.</p>

<p>Gauna cut his fiscal Q2 estimate&#8211;that’s the March quarter&#8211;from $23 billion to $22 billion, in line with Apple’s forecast, while the Street consensus is still at $23 billion. His EPS estimate drops from $5.49 to $5.10.</p>

<p>Nonetheless, any acquisition negotiations could always fail. In fact, Flixster held advanced discussions in late 2007 with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071204/flixster-for-sale-again/">IAC/InterActiveCorp</a>.</p>
<p>Along with Yahoo, which is interested in bringing in a strong team to bolster the entertainment offerings of the Silicon Valley Internet portal, sources said several media giants are also eyeing Flixster in order to strengthen their ties to entertainment consumers. Likely candidates in this regard include Disney and Warner Bros.</p>
<p>Interestingly, one of Flixster&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100104/first-ma-of-2010-flixster-rotten-tomatoes/">big shareholders is News Corp.</a>, which traded its Rotten Tomatoes unit for a 20 percent stake in the combined entity a little over a year ago.</p>
<p>But its minority stake gives News Corp. little influence over Flixster&#8217;s fate, although its IGN gaming unit head Roy Bahat is on the Flixster board. News Corp.&#8211;which has been shedding Web properties, such as its current effort to sell MySpace&#8211;is not bidding for Flixster.</p>
<p>But the interest in the site by Yahoo and others is obvious.</p>
<p>Flixster has attracted a huge online audience, which trades all kinds of recommendations, ratings, news and even post user-generated movie reviews on the Web site and via widgets on social networking sites, mostly on Facebook. Its recent mobile app efforts have been successful.</p>

In fact, among users of the jobs site <a href="http://www.glassdoor.com/index.htm">Glassdoor</a>, the social networking powerhouse was the top-ranked U.S. employer for 2010, scoring a rating of 4.6 out of 5.</p>

<p>Those smug smarties from Palo Alto, Calif. (disclosure: my husband works there part-time, so I can say that with some bit of certainty) say they love the openness and cooperativeness of internal Facebook culture, according to Glassdoor (as well as the free food and commuter shuttles).</p>
<p>This is the first time Facebook has made the <a href="http://www.glassdoor.com/Best-Places-to-Work-LST_KQ0,19.htm">Glassdoor list</a>. In second place is Southwest Airlines&#8211;which was last year&#8217;s winner&#8211;followed by Bain &#038; Company, General Mills and Edelman, respectively.</p>
<p>As for other tech companies, SAS Institute placed No. 7, Overstock.com was No. 9 and CareerBuilder No. 11. Apple was No. 20 and Google No. 30.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, in more surprising news, Glassdoor reports that Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is actually more popular now than founder Jerry Yang when he was in the top spot. Bartz has an employee approval rating of 56 percent, compared to 34 percent for Yang when he left.</p>
<p>Other comparisons: HP CEO L&eacute;o Apotheker has 62 percent approval, compared to Mark Hurd&#8217;s 34 percent when he left, and AOL CEO Tim Armstrong has 71 percent approval, compared to Randy Falco&#8217;s 13 percent approval when he left.</p>
<p>The most popular tech CEO is Apple&#8217;s Steve Jobs, with a 97 percent approval rating. Facebook&#8217;s Mark Zuckerberg and Google&#8217;s Eric Schmidt are both at 96 percent.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m going to try to pick up a copy this morning and will then update, but here are the highlights, according to the Houston Chronicle. <a href="http://blogs.chron.com/techblog/archives/2010/12/consumer_reports_att_is_the_worst_carrier.html">AT&#038;T got the magazine&#8217;s full black dot rating (that&#8217;s as low as it gets) in almost every nationwide category,</a> while Verizon topped the rankings. </p>
<p>AT&#038;T sent out the following statement in response to the rankings: &#8220;We take this seriously and we continually look for new ways to improve the customer experience. The fact is wireless customers have choices and a record number of them chose AT&#038;T in the third quarter, significantly more than our competitors. Hard data from independent drive tests confirms AT&#038;T has the nation&#8217;s fastest mobile broadband network with our nearest competitor 20 percent slower on average nationwide and our largest competitor 60 percent slower on average nationwide. And, our dropped call rate is within 1/10 of a percent&#8211;the equivalent of just one call in a thousand&#8211;of the industry leader.&#8221;</p>
<p>On the device side, the iPhone (the same one that the magazine once <a href="http://blogs.consumerreports.org/electronics/2010/07/apple-iphone-4-antenna-issue-iphone4-problems-dropped-calls-lab-test-confirmed-problem-issues-signal-strength-att-network-gsm.html">recommended against buying</a>) tops the list of phones available at AT&#038;T, the Droid X and Samsung Fascinate tied for best Verizon option and  Samsung&#8217;s Epic and Vibrant top the options at Sprint and T-Mobile, respectively.</p>

On Tuesday, the court&#8217;s nine justices will consider whether to strip First Amendment protection from violent videogames that critics say appeal to the deviant interests of children.</p>
<p>A 2005 California law prohibits selling or renting such games to minors based on legislative findings that they stimulate &#8220;feelings of aggression,&#8221; reduce &#8220;activity in the frontal lobes of the brain&#8221; and promote &#8220;violent antisocial or aggressive behavior.&#8221; The law never took effect because lower courts found it violated free-expression rights.</p>

<p>A national poll released today by Common Sense Media asking how well social networks protect kids online produced an answer that should come as a shock to exactly no one:</p>
<p>Not very well, at least according to parents.</p>
<p>A full 75 percent of them gave social networking sites such as Facebook a negative rating for the task.</p>
<p>About 2,000 parents were polled by the nonprofit media organization, as well as 400 teens, who also gave thumbs down to social networks&#8217; ability to police themselves.</p>
<p>There will be a big roundtable discussion on the topic in Washington, D.C., this morning, which will include Common Sense Media head Jim Steyer, Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski, Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz and Deputy Secretary of Education Anthony Miller.</p>
<p>Along with the poll results, San Francisco-based Common Sense Media said it will also announce the launch of the &#8220;Protect Our Privacy&#8211;Protect Our Kids&#8221; campaign to help parents protect kids&#8217; reputations and personal information online.</p>
<p>I love the smell of impending privacy legislation in the morning!</p>
<p>Already from Rep. Ed Markey of Massachusetts: “As the House author of the Children&#8217;s Online Privacy Protection Act, I remain intently interested in ensuring that children are not targeted online and their privacy is strictly protected. Twelve years after the bill was signed into law, entire new technologies and industries have emerged that could put children&#8217;s safety at risk, making a legislative update necessary.  I look forward to introducing such legislation to bring COPPA into the 21st century.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, here is more for pols to chew on: The bulk of those surveyed are more concerned with online privacy than they were five year ago (another obvious one); parents do not believe Web sites, including search engines such as Google (GOOG), should share the location of kids (count me in on that one too!); and teens think their friends overshare (you <em>think</em>?).</p>

<p>If you talked to many of them in recent weeks, there has developed a confusion over the stock sitting stagnant in the mid-teens for far too long now, a vague disgruntlement that CEO Carol Bartz has not provided enough of a vision and innovation in her 18 months in charge to turn around the iconic but long-struggling Internet giant, a nagging worry about the continuing exodus of top execs and, perhaps most of all, vexation that Yahoo (YHOO) is just too big not to be, well, bigger than it is.</p>
<p>&#8220;It just feels like there is nothing going on to get any momentum going,&#8221; said one major shareholder, whose sentiment is more common than not among longtime stock owners of Yahoo. &#8220;And it is not clear if there is anything on the horizon to get it going.&#8221;</p>
<p>Many point to the value of Yahoo&#8217;s Asian holdings, especially its stake in China&#8217;s Alibaba Group, as its most promising set of assets, valuing them much more than management&#8217;s recent attempts to focus on its media properties while shedding search technology costs under its ongoing partnership with Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>&#8220;A Yahoo shareholder has to have the patience of Job,&#8221; said another major stock owner, noting shares of the Silicon Valley company are down more than 10 percent compared to a year ago, in contrast to an 8.3 percent rise at Google (GOOG) and a 3.9 percent increase at Microsoft.</p>
<p>To be fair, for the year to date, all Yahoo shares have declined less than those of either of those two digital giants.</p>
<p>And analysts are expecting some sunshine from today&#8217;s second-quarter earnings results, which will be reported after the markets close.</p>
<p>The company is expected to report a strong gain in profits, even with revenues rising only slightly.</p>
<p>The consensus: Yahoo will earn 14 cents a share for the three months ended in June, on $1.16 billion in revenue. That compares to 10 cents on $1.14 billion in the same period a year ago.</p>
<p>Several analysts are raising their ratings on Yahoo, noting that Bartz&#8217;s efforts to cut costs and improve margins have not been fully appreciated by investors.</p>
<p>Reaction to Yahoo&#8217;s results will be interesting. Google&#8217;s earnings report earlier this week disappointed Wall Street, since its profit was less than expected, although U.S. revenue growth was promising.</p>
<p>&#8220;In particular, we believe that the robust and accelerating Google U.S. revenue results, based on both Search and Display growth, provide a broad positive market read-thru for Yahoo!,&#8221; wrote Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney in his &#8220;cheat sheet&#8221; note ahead of earnings.</p>
<p>Mahaney reiterated his $22-a-share price target, pointing to display advertising recovery, margin expansion, search share stabilization, Yahoo&#8217;s recent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100630/as-its-stock-languishes-yahoo-does-a-buyback-to-juice-shares">stock buyback authorization</a> and the eventual value of the Asian assets.</p>
<p>Yahoo shares closed yesterday at $15.10.</p>

<p>If you can&#8217;t buy Foursquare&#8211;as Yahoo did not after aggressive efforts to do so&#8211;then&#8230;buy the Indonesian version of it!</p>
<p>BoomTown has to be honest and say I have never heard of <a href="http://www.koprol.com/">Koprol</a>, a Jakarta-based social geolocation service that bears striking similarities to the hot New York-based one Yahoo (YHOO) offered $100 million for recently to no result.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s just what Yahoo snapped up, announcing the purchase of the mobile-focused start-up for an undisclosed sum tonight.</p>
<p>It is not clear what Yahoo intends to do with the technology from Koprol, but execs called it an emerging-market play.</p>
<p>And, indeed, Koprol could be used to bolster Yahoo &#8220;check-in&#8221; features globally, especially in Asia.</p>
<p>Frankly, Koprol sounds more robust, innovative and fun than Foursquare.</p>
<p>Yahoo already made another splashy mobile announcement today by unveiling a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100524/liveblogging-yahoo-nokia-annoucement/">partnership deal with Finnish handset giant Nokia</a> (NOK).</p>

<p>Social bookmarking start-up Xmarks, which has been growing its user base and bookmarked Web addresses strongly, launched a new advertising product today called SearchBoost, which it hopes will finally give it a viable business model.</p>
<p>Using a tool that displays user ranking and review information from the free synching service, Xmarks Chairman Mitch Kapor said in an interview with BoomTown that the ad offering essentially &#8220;decorates&#8221; a paid search ad, thereby boosting click-through rates by 15 percent.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.xmarks.com">Xmarks</a>, which was founded in 2006 and offers a browser widget to record bookmarking information, will also give advertisers additional analytics about their ads, as well as organic search results.</p>
<p>With detailed usage data on over one billion bookmarks rated and reviewed by users, this information will be attached to the end of search results from both Google (GOOG) and Microsoft (MSFT) Bing on Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox and soon, on Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer and Google&#8217;s Chrome browsers.</p>
<p>Xmarks said the service will cost from $29 to $99 a month for advertisers and that it will also offer more elaborate plans.</p>
<p>In the interview, Kapor said the company is simply enabling the addition of existing and valuable information already gleaned from its millions of users and giving advertisers the ability to show it off.</p>
<p>Different colors&#8211;which you can see below, with orange for paid and blue for organic results&#8211;is used to distinguish between them.</p>

<p>&#8220;These reviews show up where they show up and advertisers can&#8217;t buy a ranking or a rating,&#8221; said Kapor. &#8220;If advertisers want to decorate their ads to increase their conversions by showing what users think, that&#8217;s a good thing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Added Xmarks CEO James Joaquin: &#8220;We are allowing advertisers a tool that is already reflecting what the user base is saying is valuable&#8230;the real benefit is for brands that already have a high rank to declare that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Launching its business model, Kapor added, after growing its user base to four million active users, is the next logical step for Xmarks.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is the effort to move from that category to the category of sustainable enterprises,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And that is certainly a good thing.&#8221;</p>

In a note to clients this morning, analyst Tim Long upgraded his rating on Palm to market perform from underperform, though he maintained a $4 target on the stock. </p>
<p>Why?</p>
<p>After the vicious beating the market has given Palm (PALM) these past few months, the company’s stock&#8211;down a gruesome 75 percent since October&#8211;already well reflects its woes and the challenges it faces. And it’s still conceivable that the company may end up an acquisition target. So there’s that as well.</p>
<p>&#8220;We continue to view Palm as one of the share losers in the high-growth Smartphone segment,&#8221; Long wrote. &#8220;In our view, the company is too small to compete and the internally developed WebOS operating system is no longer a major differentiator. The end game for Palm is most likely to combine with a large OEM that wants to own its operating system and can leverage its brand and distribution platform.&#8221;</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With holiday shopping comes anxiety about getting the right gifts. Does Dad already own a copy of &#8220;Frank Sinatra&#8217;s Greatest Hits&#8221;? Was Mom expecting a new pepper mill, or was that Aunt Carol? It&#8217;s even worse for people shopping for the video gamers in their lives: Understanding the technical specifications of each console can seem as difficult as getting to the highest level in a game of Halo.</p>

<p>This week, I&#8217;ve done the dirty work for you: I&#8217;ve amassed a collection of vital details about the three most popular systems—Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) PlayStation 3 and Nintendo&#8217;s Wii—so that you can get a handle on what each offers and what it will cost you.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Nintendo Wii</h4>
<p>Nintendo recently dropped the Wii&#8217;s price, for the first time, to $200 from $250. The Wii Console comes with a controller, an additional controller called a Nunchuk, and the Wii Sports game, which includes baseball, tennis, golf, bowling and boxing. It holds 512 megabytes of flash memory, but you can increase this by inserting SecureDigital memory cards. It also accepts high-capacity SD cards, or SDHCs, of up to 32 gigabytes.</p>
<p>The couch-potato world of videogamers was shaken up when the Wii, with its motion-sensitive remote control, was introduced about three years ago. Users can play Wii Golf, for instance, by swinging the remote like a golf club. In September, Nintendo added to its lineup a $20 remote-control accessory called Wii MotionPlus that was designed to add more precision to game motions. I tested this snap-on piece and found that it did make the Wii&#8217;s motions feel more realistic. But it works only with Wii MotionPlus games—and there are only six of them; 10 more are planned for 2010.</p>
<p>Wii encourages users to move around in more ways than just waving a remote: Its Wii Balance Board, which comes with the Wii Fit Plus game in a $100 bundle, works like a digital exercise step. It records the body&#8217;s weight shifts and movements for activities from yoga to wake-boarding.</p>
<p>The Wii accesses the Internet and lets users compete online against others. About 655 packaged games are available for between $30 and $50. Also, you can use pre-purchased Nintendo Points to buy and download about 150 WiiWare games and over 325 titles from the older Virtual Console library. Each game costs between 300 and 1,500 points, or between about $3 and $15.</p>
<p>WiiConnect24 can send messages from one Wii to another over the Internet, as long the two users exchange &#8220;Wii numbers.&#8221; Users can also surf the Web with Wii&#8217;s Opera browser. But beyond this, no other Web features—like downloadable movies, social-networking applications or streaming music—will work on this system.</p>
<p>Parental controls can be set on the Wii to restrict kids from using the Web browser, playing games that have a certain rating or communicating online.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Microsoft Xbox 360</h4>
<p>Microsoft recently stepped up its game by adding features to its $200 Xbox 360 that make it well-rounded rather than strictly geared toward serious gamers. People who buy the Xbox LIVE Gold membership, for $50 a year, get applications for Facebook, Twitter, the Last.fm music-streaming service, online multiplayer game play, video chat, Netflix (Netflix subscription required), photo sharing via the Xbox, and movie or photo &#8220;parties&#8221; that allow users to watch a movie simultaneously with seven other friends.</p>
<p>Xbox LIVE Silver membership is free and includes basic features like voice and text chat, as well as access to the Zune video library&#8217;s 20,000 TV shows and movies to buy or rent. The Xbox also allows media-streaming over a home network. To wirelessly connect to the Internet on your Xbox, you&#8217;ll need to buy a $100 Wi-Fi adapter. By contrast, the Wii and PlayStation 3 have built-in Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>Anyone who owns a Microsoft Zune media player can buy a TV show or movie and download it to an Xbox or PC as well as the Zune. Zunes can be plugged into the Xbox to play music, as can Apple (AAPL) iPods.</p>
<p>The base Xbox comes with a wireless controller and 512 megabytes of memory. For $100 more, the Elite Holiday Bundle includes a 120-gigabyte hard drive, headset, wireless controller, and two games: &#8220;LEGO Batman: The Videogame&#8221; and &#8220;Pure.&#8221; More than 1,200 games are available for the Xbox, mostly costing between $29 and $60. About 350 of the games can be downloaded from the Xbox LIVE Arcade (costing 400 to 1,600 points, or $5 to $20) or the Games on Demand library.</p>
<p>Microsoft confirmed plans to introduce Project Natal, a system that lets people operate games with gestures and body movements rather than remote controls. Natal will work with all Xbox 360 consoles. Microsoft won&#8217;t confirm a date.</p>
<p>Family settings let parents control whether their kids play games online and with whom they play, as well as the ratings of the games. A Family Timer regulates how long kids play.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Sony PlayStation 3</h4>
<p>Sony&#8217;s PlayStation, like the Xbox 360, is designed with serious gamers in mind. Its base version costs $300 and includes a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a DualShock 3 wireless controller; $50 more buys a version with a 250-gigabyte hard drive. Both systems can be upgraded with any standard 2.5-inch hard drive. The PlayStation is also a Blu-ray disc player.</p>
<p>Like the Xbox, the PlayStation 3, or PS3, now offers extra features, but these features are all included in the PlayStation Network, which is free (not $50 yearly like Xbox LIVE Gold). These PlayStation Network extras include Netflix (NFLX) instant streaming, a Web browser, photo slide shows, the ability to stream media over a home network to the PS3, a Facebook application that shares game information with friends and the PlayStation Network video-delivery service, where users can purchase 2,400 high- and standard-definition movies and 15,000 TV episodes.</p>
<p>The PS3 and the PlayStation Portable, Sony&#8217;s portable gaming device, are married in many ways. A new feature called Blu-ray Portable Copy lets users make a free standard-definition copy of some Blu-ray movies for transfer to a PlayStation Portable. Remote Play lets people stream media files from the PS3 to the PlayStation Portable in Wi-Fi hot spots or remotely turn the PS3 on or off using the PlayStation Portable. Movies and TV shows from the PlayStation Network can be transferred to either system, so you can start a movie on a big-screen TV and finish it on the PlayStation Portable; the same can be done for games.</p>
<p>About 400 games are available on Blu-ray for the PS3; these cost between $30 and $60. More than 150 titles, costing between $3 and $40, can be downloaded directly to the PS3. Sony confirmed that it will release a motion-sensing controller, but it hasn&#8217;t set a date.</p>
<p>Parental restrictions for the PS3 include the ability to restrict games, DVDs and Blu-ray discs with certain ratings. Parents can also limit monthly spending or Web browsing.</p>

<p>In a note to investors this morning, Pali analyst Walter Piecyk says he’s not buying predictions about Sprint (S) returning to growth in 2010. Sure, the company is improving post-paid subscriber losses, says Piecyk, but not as quickly as it needs to. And its prepaid business, which already faces a fair bit of competition, will be confronted with even more competition next year.</p>
<p>&#8220;Over the past six months our concerns have been rising over the slow pace of change at Sprint and what we view as lost opportunities for growth, but we maintained our Buy rating due to the low valuation on the stock and the depressed expectations of investors,&#8221; Piecyk writes. </p>
<p>&#8220;Those concerns increased in recent months as the pre-paid business, which Sprint has been accessing for growth, became more competitive and Verizon began executing on a more open device strategy,&#8221; the analyst adds. &#8220;In the past few weeks, investors have become more optimistic about positive post-paid signs early in Q4 and Sprint’s prospects of even stronger pre-paid results in 2010, in the face of increasing competition.&#8221;</p>
<p>In contrast, Piecyk notes that &#8220;We are less confident about those trends and as we model out a more competitive market in 2010 for all our companies it becomes evident to us that Sprint will be challenged to stabilize EBITDA. Faced with negative catalysts in the months ahead and the challenge of appropriately valuing a company whose EBITDA is in perpetual decline, we believe now is the right time to downgrade the stock to Neutral.&#8221; </p>
<p>Wall Street, then, isn’t underestimating Sprint’s prospects for 2010. It’s overestimating them&#8211;or at least <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&amp;sid=aLOTs3wQzuUM"> it certainly was yesterday</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;For 2010, we expect post-paid losses to be pared by 35% to 2.3 million subs lost compared to our prior estimate of less than 2 million subs lost in that year,&#8221; Piecyk concludes. &#8220;While pre-paid net adds might offset the losses or even top post-paid losses in Q4 we expect the total customer base to decline by 700,000 in 2010.&#8221;</p>

In a canvass of more than 50,000 readers spanning 26 U.S. cities, the organization found the carrier had the lowest customer-satisfaction rating in 19 cities surveyed; Verizon ranked highest.  </p>

<p>To hear that AT&#038;T (T) ranked dead last in customer satisfaction in high-profile markets like New York and San Francisco isn’t all that surprising. New Yorkers  <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5370493/apple-genius-bar-iphones-30-call-drop-is-normal-in-new-york">often carp about dropped AT&#038;T calls</a>, and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090821/iphone-owners-would-like-to-replace-battery-att/">complaints</a> about lousy service in the Bay Area are legion.<br />

<p>But to find that the carrier placed last in 17 other cities as well suggests that AT&#038;T’s shortcomings are more widespread than the carrier would have us believe and not simply the product of a high concentration of iPhones in the country’s larger cities. </p>
<p>As Pali analyst Walter Piecyk wrote in an investor note this morning,  &#8220;We believe it has been an elitist investor view that only a few high profile AT&#038;T markets are having problems on the theory that only &#8216;tech savvy&#8217; residents of coastal cities would find enough use in the iPhone to impact the quality of AT&#038;T’s network.&#8221;</p>
<p>It certainly would appear that way. With low marks for several key indicators of customer satisfaction&#8211;including service availability, circuit capacity, dropped-call frequency and voice service&#8211;across 73 percent of the markets Consumer Reports surveyed, it’s pretty clear that AT&#038;T has become overextended by the popularity of the iPhone. Which is bad news for the carrier and, of course, for iPhone owners as well. </p>
<p>As Consumer reports notes, &#8220;Apple’s iPhones are the top smart phones in our Ratings&#8211;actually, among the best of all phones we tested, period&#8211;but their exclusive carrier, AT&#038;T, was middling at best in satisfaction&#8230;.If you’re readying to buy Apple’s phone, prepare for possible disappointment with its service and expect to love the phone anyway. Despite the network problems, a staggering 98 percent of iPhone users in our cell-phone-buying survey were satisfied enough to say they would definitely or probably buy the phone again. Only 79 percent of respondents who bought other cell phones said the same.&#8221;</p>
<p>Verizon (VZ), which has been <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091109/verizon-banishes-iphone-to-island-of-misfit-toys/">mercilessly slamming AT&#038;T’s service in a recent ad campaign</a>, is going to have a field day with this. And somehow, I don’t think a hurriedly cobbled together <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091118/att-awarded-hug-and-a-box-of-tissues-in-verizon-ad-case/">Luke Wilson ad</a> will undo the damage.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Reached for comment, AT&#038;T had this to say about Consumer Reports&#8217; findings, which, the company stressed, were based on anecdotal feedback from a self-selected group of subscribers: &#8220;We appreciate and value all customer feedback. We learn from it and it helps us serve our customers better. Without question the surest indication of customer satisfaction is churn, or turnover. For the last quarter, our postpaid churn was just 1.17 percent.&#8221;</p>

<p>Earlier this week, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091102/palm-3/">analysts at Citigroup (C) and CL King voiced their concerns</a> about the company in the wake of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091030/pre-sprint/">another ugly quarter from carrier partner Sprint</a> (S). Now Standard &#038; Poor&#8217;s is doing so as well. In a note to investors today, analyst James Moorman whacked down his price target on the company&#8217;s shares to $10 from $12 and reiterated his &#8220;Strong Sell rating.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe the upcoming holiday selling season will be very competitive for handset vendors and think Palm could see competitive pressures,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;We believe the small price difference between the Pre handset (especially when on sale at third party vendors) and the new lower-end Pixie could limit Pixie sales and confuse consumers during the launch.&#8221;<br />

Indeed. As <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091026/palm-pixi-launches-nov-15-for-99-after-rebates/">I noted here  last week</a> the $99 price Sprint has set for the Pixi is identical to the Pre’s on Amazon (AMZN). And the Pre has a faster processor, a better screen, and Wi-Fi support as well.</p>
<p>Not the most desirable circumstances for heading into the holiday season.</p>

And now it seems that day has finally come. </p>
<p>Shares in the handset maker fell some 23 percent last week amid concerns about increased competition from Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system, which is being rolled out on a number of devices at a variety of carriers, including Palm partner Sprint (S). </p>
<p>This morning, analysts at Citigroup (C) cut their recommendations to sell from hold on Palm (PALM) while simultaneously raising their rating on Motorola (MOT) because of its &#8220;compelling&#8221; new Android handset, Droid. </p>
<p>&#8220;Motorola is launching of one of the most compelling offerings at [a] time when many investors have given up on the company’s handsets,&#8221; Citigroup analyst Jim Suva wrote in a research note. </p>
<p>&#8220;The revolution of product and application service offerings,&#8221; Suva added, &#8220;is going to start to crack open the enterprise door and could pose a risk for BlackBerry. Major shifts in promotion support creating a promotion commotion in the months ahead favor Motorola and post a challenge for RIMM and PALM.&#8221;</p>
<p>Over at CL King, analyst Lawrence Harris is similarly dubious of Palm’s prospects in the months ahead. Noting that Sprint executive David Owens said last week that the carrier plans to peddle a number of new Android devices from HTC next year, Harris sees unfavorable implications for Palm. </p>
<p>&#8220;Historically, Sprint has been Palm’s largest customer. Indeed, in the August quarter Sprint accounted for 85 percent of Palm’s revenues,&#8221; Harris wrote in a note to investors. &#8220;In FY09 (May) Sprint represented 43 percent of total Palm sales. Sprint has a U.S. exclusive on both the Pre and the Pixi through calendar year end. The Pixi will be launched at Sprint on November 15 for $99.99. The Pixi is fairly similar to the $149.99 Pre. Verizon has stated that it will begin offering the Pre in early CY10.&#8221;</p>
<p>Expounding on his analysis, Harris notes that &#8220;According to a report on Mobile Today, a U.K.-based publication, initial sales of the Pre through Telefonica’s O2 unit in the U.K. have been slow. If this report is correct, than the bulk of Palm’s sales over the next few months will probably continue to be generated through Sprint.&#8221;</p>
<p>That Sprint will soon add some slick new Android handsets to its lineup is worrisome, then, indeed. For Palm, it seems,  driving conditions on the road to recovery are looking increasingly hazardous.</p>

<p>The site lets college students rate their professors on such traits as easiness, helpfulness, clarity and “hotness,” and its popularity has prompted a slew of news articles quoting teachers maligned or flattered by their anonymous reviews. Last month, the New York Times’s (NYT) Ethicist column addressed an unnamed instructor who asked whether it’s appropriate to suggest that satisfied students post a rating to improve his profile.</p>
<p>“Universities have always done professor evaluations, but that information was kept private,” said Carlo DiMarco, vice president of university relations at MTV Networks, whose MTVu division bought RateMyProfessors in 2007. The site helps students “seek the wisdom of a much larger group,” he said, when figuring out which classes they should be taking, a process that used to happen via word-of-mouth with a handful of classmates.</p>

<p>&#8220;Reaching more than 1 million downloads so quickly is a strong testament to our world-class programming and Sirius XM&#8217;s instant brand recognition,&#8221; Scott Greenstein, president and chief content officer, said in a release trumpeting the milestone. &#8220;Our goal is to give people access to the best audio entertainment wherever they go with what we think is the best music and audio entertainment application available on the App Store.&#8221;</p>
<p>The app, which debuted on June 18, quickly became the top free offering in the the App Store’s music category and has held that spot for some time now. So it’s certainly one of the more popular music apps available. That said, it’s also one of the most poorly rated. Sirius XM’s app has an average rating of just two stars out of a possible five. Of its 56,952 user reviews,  just 8,822 give it five stars. But 37,818 rate it a single star. And most of those do so citing Stern’s absence as the reason. So while it’s true that Sirius XM Premium Online is the the top free app in the music category, it’s also seems to be its leading disappointment.
