				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you can tear your kid away from the iPad long enough, you might want to hand him or her the latest gadget from LeapFrog Enterprises. </p>
<p>The California-based company, known for its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110913/a-tablet-children-can-grow-into/">educational-based LeapPad tablets for kids</a>, has just introduced a new device aimed at helping youngsters learn to read and write.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/04/LeapReaderPenandBook2.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2013/04/LeapReaderPenandBook2-380x285.png" alt="LeapReaderPenandBook2" width="380" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-316770" /></a></p>
<p>Called the LeapReader, the pen-like tool reads audio books aloud and teaches basic writing skills, reciting letters and words aloud as the child is writing them. It will also offer games and other incentive-based learning tools.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re familiar with LeapFrog&#8217;s product line, the LeapReader will remind you a lot of the Tag and Tag Junior audio pens. The Tag systems, however, are limited to electronic book-reading, and don&#8217;t include the writing tutorials, which LeapFrog says will offer a more complete learning solution.</p>
<p>The rechargeable device has an expected battery life of five hours and can hold up to 40 downloaded titles, available through LeapFrog&#8217;s library. LeapFrog says there will be 100 digital content audio titles &#8212; like audio books and trivia challenges &#8212; available by year&#8217;s end, including titles in the Clifford series, &#8220;The Velveteen Rabbit&#8221; and Little Golden Books. These range in price from $5 to $10.</p>
<p>The LeapReader itself costs $50, and will come to market in July. It supports English-language learning only. Oh, and there&#8217;s another cost to factor in: The LeapReader works with &#8220;interactive learning paper&#8221; and Learn to Write workbooks &#8212; about  35 to 42 interactive pages &#8212; that cost $20.</p>

<p>Earlier today, Yahoo said it had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130325/yahoo-acquires-hipster-mobile-news-reader-summly-like-we-said-it-might/">acquired the trendy and decidedly stylish news reading app Summly</a>, along with its telegenic and very young entrepreneur Nick D&#8217;Aloisio. </p>
<p>Yahoo said it plans to close down the actual app and use the algorithmic summation technology that the 17-year-old D&#8217;Aloisio built with a small team of five, along with a major assist from Silicon Valley research institute SRI International, throughout its products.  </p>
<p>While Yahoo did not disclose the price, several sources told me that the company paid $30 million &#8212; 90 percent in cash and 10 percent in stock &#8212; to buy the London-based Apple smartphone app.</p>
<p>And despite its elegant delivery, that&#8217;s a very high price, especially since Summly has been downloaded slightly less than one million times since launch &#8212; after a quick start amid much publicity over its founder &#8212; with about 90 million &#8220;summaries&#8221; read. Of course, like many such apps, it also had no monetization plan as yet.</p>
<p>What Yahoo is getting, though, is perhaps more valuable &#8212; the ability to put the fresh-faced D&#8217;Aloisio front and center of its noisy efforts to make consumers see Yahoo as a mobile-first company. That has been the goal of CEO Marissa Mayer, who has bought up a range of small mobile startups since she took over nine months ago and who has talked about the need for Yahoo to focus on the mobile arena above all.</p>
<p>Mayer met with D&#8217;Aloisio, said sources, although the deal was struck by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130307/loose-lips-yahoo-ma-head-tells-employees-company-looking-at-two-significant-and-a-half-dozen-small-buys/">voluble M&#038;A head Jackie Reses</a>.</p>
<p>Said one person close to the deal, about the founder: &#8220;Nick will be a great person to put in front of the media and consumers with Mayer to make Yahoo seem like it is a place that loves both entrepreneurs and mobile experiences, which in turn will presumably attract others like him.&#8221;</p>
<p>Having met the young man in question, who was in San Francisco in the fall on a fundraising trip, I can see the appeal. He&#8217;s both well-spoken and adorkable, as well as very adept at charming cranky media types like me by radiating with the kinetic energy of someone born in the mobile world (you can see that in full force in the video below with actor and Summly investor Stephen Fry). </p>
<p>Still, D&#8217;Aloisio is very young and presumably has a lot of other entrepreneurial goals and that&#8217;s why he agreed as part of the deal to only officially stay 18 months at Yahoo, multiple sources told me. In many cases, startup founders strike such short-term employment deals with big companies, agreeing to stay for a certain determined time period. </p>
<p>He will also remain in England, where he lives with his parents, said sources. In addition, only two of Summly&#8217;s employees will go to Yahoo with D&#8217;Aloisio. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s $10 million each, along with a nifty app Yahoo will not be using as is (too bad, as it would up the hip and fun factor of Yahoo&#8217;s apps by a factor of a gazillion if it were maintained). </p>
<p>&#8220;It works out on a lot of levels,&#8221; said another person close to the situation. &#8220;Nick is a founder that will make Mayer and Yahoo look cutting edge.&#8221; </p>
<p>Cue the parade of PR profiles of the young genius made millionaire, helping Yahoo become relevant again.</p>
<p>I have an email for comment into the always friendly D&#8217;Aloisio. But I don&#8217;t expect a reply, since he has apparently been specifically instructed by the martinets of Yahoo PR not to talk to me any longer &#8212; well, for 18 months at least! (Don&#8217;t worry, Nick, I don&#8217;t blame you and will still listen to whatever you are pitching next, since you are so <em>dang</em> compelling and I enjoyed using Summly!)</p>

<p>The price of the acquisition is in the tens of millions, they said &#8212; between $50 million and $100 million.</p>
<p>Kara Swisher <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130311/whos-about-to-acquire-news-reading-app-pulse-because-someone-is/">reported earlier today</a> that a deal was in the works, with Microsoft and Yahoo also engaged in talks. </p>
<p>San Francisco-based Alphonso Labs, which makes the Pulse app for various platforms, has raised about $10 million from Redpoint Ventures, Greycroft Partners, Mayfield Fund, Lightspeed Investment Partners, New Enterprise Associates and Lerer Ventures. It has 20 million users who read more than 10 million stories per day.</p>
<p>Other LinkedIn acquisitions include CardMunch, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/linkedin-buys-slideshare-for-119m-while-beating-earnings-expectations/">SlideShare</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120222/rapportive-confirms-its-been-bought-by-linkedin-contact-product-not-being-shut-down/">Rapportive</a>.</p>
<p>LinkedIn declined a request for comment.</p>

<p>According to several sources close to the situation, the nifty news reading app Pulse is in advanced talks to be acquired by a major &#8220;platform&#8221; company.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been trying to track down who among many suitors who have looked at acquiring the mobile-focused startup that allows a user to read content from a variety of online sources, narrowing the field down to a handful.</p>
<p>Several sources have told me that Microsoft and Yahoo have been engaged in talks with the startup, which currently claims it has 20 million users from across the globe, who read more than 10 million stories a day. But a range of other possible acquirers is long &#8212; from Facebook (unlikely) to Gannett (likely too pricey) to Amazon (interesting!). </p>
<p>But sources close to the situation tell me that the winner for Pulse is likely to be one that has emerged as a content powerhouse of late: LinkedIn. The business networking site has been aggressively adding a range of very impressive content to its fast-growing repertoire. In addition, CEO Jeff Weiner, who used to run content offerings at Yahoo, knows a thing or two about the arena and &#8212; if I might be familiar &#8212; this is just like him. Lastly, the stock has performed strongly, and it&#8217;s in a good position to shop.</p>
<p>Sources told me that the deal is nearly complete and could be announced this week, although it could take several weeks to close. As with all these kinds of things, there is a possibility that any such acquisition efforts could falter, but sources said the acquisition effort by LinkedIn is quite serious.</p>
<p>It makes sense. The Pulse app &#8212; which competes with services such as Flipboard, Summly, Prismatic, Circa and Zite &#8212; is offered for the Apple iPhone and iPad, Google Android devices and, most recently, the Web. Content publishers that appear on its service in a variety of categories include BBC News, TMZ and Sports Illustrated, as well as <strong>AllThingsD</strong>.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based company has raised close to $10 milion from Redpoint Ventures, Greycroft Partners, Mayfield Fund, Lightspeed Investment Partners, New Enterprise Associates and Lerer Ventures.</p>
<p>The sale of Pulse is perhaps not surprising, given that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/zite-sold-to-cnn-for-just-over-20-million/">Zite was sold to CNN</a> in 2011 for about $20 million. But others, such as the heavily funded Flipboard, have remained independent. All are vying to attract consumers to their aggregation apps, and aiming to sell advertising against the audience, which they then share with publishers.</p>
<p>Big companies have also entered the game, but with much less success. AOL created an offering called <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">Editions</a>, while <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/news-reader-traffic-jam-yahoos-livestand-and-googles-propeller-set-to-launch-aiming-at-flipboard/">Google tried with Currents</a>. Perhaps most prominently, Yahoo launched and then scuttled its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120525/yahoo-folds-up-livestand-its-would-be-flipboard-killer/">Livestand</a> app.</p>
<p>But CEO Marissa Mayer has taken a new look at the space in an effort to improve Yahoo&#8217;s mobile offerings, initiating talks with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121213/mobilemobilemobile-yahoo-eyes-hipster-teen-founded-summly-news-app/">Summly</a> and also Pulse.</p>
<p>So, too, Microsoft, which has worked closely with Pulse recently on its &#8220;tiles of content&#8221; strategy for its Windows Mobile effort. As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120809/pulse-builds-snazzy-web-app-with-help-from-microsoft/">reported by Liz Gannes</a> in August, the startup was helped by the software giant in a new Web version that looks more like an app than a site, with a tiled, full-screen, image-heavy layout that looks very good on the recent Windows Surface tablets. The Web Pulse also displays an Internet Explorer icon in the top right corner, even when used in other browsers.</p>
<p>But LinkedIn emerged as an interesting alternative, given its efforts to round out the service with more content to help move it beyond a site aimed at resumes and networking. And, in fact, its content is really quite good, with a range of original posts by prominent figures across the spectrum.</p>
<p>Also on the fast track at Pulse, which makes it attractive to LinkedIn, has been its new Highlights feature, which is an effort to put more social cues into the service that coordinates with Facebook accounts. The app has also recently added integration with Instagram, Flickr, YouTube and Tumblr, too.</p>
<p>Pulse was developed by Alphonso Labs, the brainchild of Stanford University grad students Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta. They got their big break in 2010, when Pulse was called out by name for excellence at a developers conference by the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs, only hours before the company had to temporarily stop offering its service to users, due to objections to its aggregation efforts by the New York Times.</p>
<p>I have calls for comment into all the interested parties &#8212; including the usually responsive Kothari &#8212; which I will update when I hear back.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/11/mark-sanchez-jets-football.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-268395" title="mark sanchez jets football" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/11/mark-sanchez-jets-football-290x285.jpg" alt="" width="290" height="285" /></a>Yahoo&#8217;s new CEO Marissa Mayer is continuing her <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121109/touch-a-touch-a-touch-me-yahoos-latest-new-homepage-redesign-tries-interactive-tile-look/">tweaking of the critical homepage of the Silicon Valley Internet giant</a>. &#8220;Bucket tests&#8221; of new iterations are rolling out today to small sets of users across the service, as the company zeros in on launching it widely in the first week of December.</p>
<p>This is a massive move and also a risky one. Yahoo&#8217;s homepage sees about 170 million daily users who click in to do a variety of things. That huge traffic means that advertising placements earn big bucks from marketers &#8212; which inside sources said is typically upwards of $350,000 for a prime placement for a day, rising in price depending on complexity.</p>
<p>Thus, making any dramatic change to the powerful homepage is a big deal for Yahoo&#8217;s bottom line, especially in the important fourth quarter, when big advertisers spend a lot of money online and expect big results.</p>
<p>And the latest versions are certainly a major shift from Yahoo&#8217;s older look, with the latest using an interactive tiled approach at the very top that suggests the design spawn of Microsoft&#8217;s Windows 8 and Flipboard&#8217;s elegant social reading app.</p>
<p>As I noted last week, along with experiments in infinite scrolling, a simplified logo and giving search more prominence, Yahoo&#8217;s homepage change seems to be aimed at being consumed on touch-responsive, non-PC devices.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise, since Mayer declared in a recent earnings call that Yahoo was going to veer toward a &#8220;mobile first&#8221; sensibility. &#8220;Yahoo will have to be a predominantly mobile company,&#8221; she <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121022/liveblogging-the-debut-of-yahoo-ceo-mayer-tailor-made-for-marissa/">said</a>.</p>

In a bit of unlucky timing &#8212; even as Yahoo prepped the home page redo, as well as major overhauls of other products &#8212; its hugely popular Fantasy Football offering went down right as eight games were about to start at 10 am PT.</p>
<p>Yahoo acknowledged the slowness in its servers on Twitter, noting: &#8220;We&#8217;re still working to fix fantasy server issue &amp; will update ASAP. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience &amp; appreciate your patience.&#8221;</p>
<p>Fantasy Football fans were livid, although this has happened before, especially to those who waited to do their lineup. But some were also funny about the screw-up, as you can see below:</p>

<p>As of two hours ago, <a href="https://twitter.com/YahooFootball">Yahoo said it was still working on the problem</a>. Presumably, it will be the first fix-it challenge for <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121015/yahoo-confirms-hiring-of-googles-de-castro-as-coo-like-i-said/">new COO Henrique De Castro</a>, who starts this week.</p>
<p>Hopefully, Yahoo will not have such problems with the homepage rollout, once the final version is selected.</p>
<p>Until then, please check out two images of yet another version, which is similar &#8212; although not the same &#8212; as the one I posted last week. In the latest design, for example, the swooshy scroll at the top is smaller and a 300 by 250-sized ad unit is back in place at the top. Overall, it is a little bit more conservative, although still streamlined.</p>

<p>Check out that growth chart on the right. The site now hosts five million stories, with 500,000 added per month. It has eight million monthly unique users who spent 1.7 billion minutes on the site in May.</p>
<p>Some 70 percent of Wattpad users are women, and 70 percent of usage is on mobile devices, according to CEO Allen Lau.</p>
<p>Who wants to read e-books by unpublished authors? A whole lot of people. For instance, a book by teen author Jordan Lynde (a.k.a. <a href="http://www.wattpad.com/user/XxSkater2Girl16xX">XxSkater2Girl16xX</a> on Wattpad) about a relationship between a teacher and a student, has been read nearly 20 million times. And some Wattpad writers are now <a href="http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/childrens/childrens-book-news/article/50659-s-s-acquires-self-pubbed-life-s-a-witch-in-three-book-deal.html">signing big publishing deals</a>.</p>
<p>Wattpad is based in Toronto and has 15 employees, about half of whom are on its community management team. It had just raised a previous round of funding in August, much of which it has yet to spend, but took more money now, because &#8220;our growth blew away our most optimistic projections,&#8221; Lau said.</p>

<p>Famed Hollywood movie director James Cameron has always been a geek, most especially an ocean geek, so it&#8217;s no surprise that he would be the one to dive seven miles down into the Mariana Trench&#8217;s Challenger Deep.</p>
<p>That would be into the Earth&#8217;s deepest place, in a tiny, vertical green tube. He&#8217;s the first person to do the treacherous dive alone &#8212; technically, it is 6.8 miles or 11 kilometers &#8212; an exploration he did with National Geographic.</p>
<p>It took about two hours to get down and a little over an hour to come back up. When he got back to the surface, Cameron was first spotted by the helicopter owned by his friend, Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen (more power-nerding!), who was also along for the adventure.</p>
<p>While down in the bottom of the sea, Cameron gathered samples and readings, but he also found time to tweet:</p>

<p>The well-known filmmaker has done two big movies related to the ocean &#8212; &#8220;Titanic&#8221; and &#8220;The Abyss,&#8221; but it is less well known that the lush landscape of &#8220;Avatar&#8221; got its color and design concepts from the sea.</p>
<p>I know all this and more about Cameron&#8217;s watery interests from an interview he did at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in 2010. In it, he talked a lot about diving, including wanting to use submersibles to make sure the BP oil company was telling the truth about its spill back then.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As a kid, I was lucky to have a dad who was a top-notch book-cover maker, wrapping my school textbooks in brown paper bags that he transformed into precisely folded, sharp cornered, blank canvases. </p>
<p>But even Dad&#8217;s covers couldn&#8217;t fix everything: Some books showed their age with dog-eared pages, highlights, tears and leftover love notes. Plus, they weighed several pounds each, tugging down my JanSport backpack.</p>

<p>This week, I tested a one-stop solution to much of that which ails textbooks: Apple&#8217;s iBooks 2. This redesigned iPad app offers enhanced educational textbooks that are, for now, focused on high-school students and cost no more than $15 each. Apple&#8217;s smallest and least expensive iPad can store roughly eight to 10 textbooks, along with other content. (High schoolers have an average of four textbooks a year, according to Apple.) The iPad itself weighs just over one pound.</p>
<p>These electronic textbooks include interactive materials that seem like they should&#8217;ve been available long ago: multiple-choice questions that can be answered with taps on the screen, embedded videos, dynamic diagrams that change with touch gestures and flash cards for studying important terms in a book. </p>
<p>The big catch is you need an iPad to read these textbooks, and schools or parents may have trouble budgeting for these devices. The least expensive iPad costs $499. Apple argues the low cost of books will offset the cost of the device. </p>

Currently about 1,000 of the iBooks 2 books, 11 of which are textbooks, have new enhancements such as video, dynamic diagrams and study flash cards.  A pinch gesture will restore a zoomed-in image to its place in a book. </div>
<p>Also, some people have trouble reading long passages on the iPad&#8217;s backlit screen, or find it uncomfortable to hold. In the sun, its reflective surface makes reading nearly impossible. </p>
<p>Currently about 1,000 books, 11 of which are textbooks, have the new iBooks 2 features. These include titles from well-known publishers like Pearson Education, Dorling Kindersley and McGraw-Hill; Houghton Mifflin Harcourt books are coming in time for the start of the next school year. </p>
<p>But the books also include published works from teachers, experts and regular people who used Apple&#8217;s new iBooks Author app to create a book. This is a free app for Macs for creating and publishing content. User-created books are approved by Apple and then made available in the iBooks store for free or for a price.</p>
<p>I downloaded several of the new iBooks textbooks onto my iPad, including &#8220;Biology,&#8221; &#8220;Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life,&#8221; &#8220;Chemistry&#8221; and &#8220;Life on Earth.&#8221; I also downloaded an older AP Biology title without enhancements: Zoomed-in images weren&#8217;t in focus, and the book lacked interactive materials.</p>
<p>Delightful animations and gestures abound in these enhanced e-books. </p>
<p>Tap on any image to see it larger and tap different parts of the image to see animations, like an electromagnetic spectrum diagram in a science textbook that showed frequency and wavelength as I tapped on images of infrared lamps and lasers. A two-finger pinch returns the image to its place in the book with a playful animation. </p>

<p>When these books are read with the iPad held in landscape (horizontally), visuals take up large portions of the screen. But when the iPad is in portrait mode, text takes center stage, with smaller representations of each image appearing in the margins. This option to focus on reading could be a real help for kids who are easily distracted. Some titles, however, may only be readable in landscape view.</p>
<p>Study cards, a digital version of the 3-by-5 index cards you used to spend hours making by hand, are a huge timesaver. Every term in a book&#8217;s glossary generates its own study card. The front shows the word, and a tap on its corner flips the card to show its definition. </p>
<p>Even highlighting is easier and looks better in iBooks 2: It works in several colors, and rather than turning on highlighting first, readers simply hold down a finger and start dragging that finger along text to highlight. Study cards also are created for every passage you highlight. </p>
<p>But I found a few bugs. The new iBooks 2 app crashed several times and an Algebra 1 book froze in mid-download. The download didn&#8217;t complete because my iPad was full, but a notice about this didn&#8217;t appear, even after rebooting, until several hours later. </p>
<p>Apple later reported that the file I was trying to download was corrupted, and replaced the file.</p>
<p>And there are other curious omissions. Some parts of these books, like blank lab charts and chapter review questions, didn&#8217;t offer a built-in place to enter answers. </p>
<p>For that, I had to create and add a digital note in the book (using the iPad&#8217;s on-screen keyboard) or do the unthinkable—use a pencil and paper. </p>
<p>An Apple official said all notes are text-based and there are no current plans for finger or stylus input.</p>
<p>In addition to iBooks, Apple revamped its free iTunes U app, which used to be limited to audio and video lectures for higher education. </p>
<p>Now, iTunes U is available for students in kindergarten through 12th grade and can include all sorts of course components like the new iBooks textbooks, outlines, Web links and apps. This content is free, except for in-app materials including things like textbooks or apps. I downloaded Duke University&#8217;s &#8220;Introductory Chemistry&#8221; in iTunes U and it contained 567 videos, books, documents, apps and Web links. </p>
<p>If anyone can move textbooks into a new realm with interactive, smart gestures, it&#8217;s Apple. But iBooks needs to work out a few kinks before it can be used as a full replacement for physical textbooks. </p>

<p>This week, I tried Subtext, a free iPad app designed to enable and encourage conversations based on e-books—not necessarily with fellow plane passengers, but among readers within digital books themselves. A revamped version of Subtext, originally released in October, is available in Apple&#8217;s App Store Tuesday.</p>

<p>Like Amazon&#8217;s Kindle already does, Subtext gives anyone who reads an e-book the ability to make notes, highlight passages and to keep private or share those notes or highlights with other users. But this app goes much further: It also lets readers post questions, polls, quizzes or even Web links that are noted in the margins of the book. Other users respond to these posts and start mini book discussions that can continue indefinitely. Subtext content can be kept private, made visible to all users or made visible only to a user&#8217;s friends. Along with comments from fellow readers, Subtext users can see comments marked in blue that are made by a book&#8217;s author or other experts.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, Subtext smacks of immaturity when compared with other reading apps like Amazon&#8217;s Kindle app and Barnes &amp; Noble&#8217;s Nook app. While those work on several devices and operating systems, Subtext works only on Apple&#8217;s iPad. It only runs with books from Google Books or those in Adobe&#8217;s ePub format, and the process for getting the latter—emailing the book to oneself or downloading the file from a website to the iPad—is clumsy and not intuitive. Co-founder Rachel Thomas said Subtext is actively developing for other platforms. </p>
<p>Another issue is that Subtext is only as good as its users&#8217; involvement. The more people comment and create discussions, the more interesting it will be for others. For this to happen, the app has to lure readers away from the devices and apps they&#8217;re already comfortable with, like the Kindle or Nook, or the Kindle, Nook and Apple iBooks apps on the iPad. </p>
<p>I got an early look at the new version of Subtext and found it more self-explanatory than its predecessor. I signed in using my Google account, though users can sign in using a Facebook account or explore the app as a guest. By signing into my Google Account, my shelves were populated with the Google e-books I already purchased. Previews of books give users a sense of what the app does.</p>

<p>Users can tap on any book cover to see all content and social information related to that book. Likewise, tapping on any user profile image lets you visit that person&#8217;s shelf. A Featured Shelves section suggests different categories of books like Critics Picks 2011 and 2011&#8242;s Most Social Books.</p>
<p>As I used Subtext for the first time, small hint windows floated onto the iPad screen at certain points to demonstrate how things worked. One encouraged me to tap and hold my finger on the screen at a favorite book passage to see options for adding notes to that passage. I tried this a few times, including while reading a line in Tina Fey&#8217;s &#8220;Bossypants&#8221; about working moms with kids. I highlighted this passage and posed a question to all Subtext users: How many kids does Tina Fey have? Someone, who I later found out was Subtext&#8217;s co-founder Andrew Goldman, answered about an hour later, saying Ms. Fey has two daughters—a 6-year-old and a 6-month-old. </p>
<p>The Discussions section of the app neatly organizes all social interactions in one place, so people don&#8217;t have to skip back through books to see the continued conversations surrounding a question. </p>
<p>I like the way Subtext subtly notifies readers that notes exist: by showing a tiny thumbnail image of the user who posted the note in the margin of a book. Tapping on that image opens the note. I commented on some existing discussions by tapping the Reply button.</p>
<p>I created a note for one book passage using a related Web link, and the steps for doing this were clear and understandable. I kept this visible only to myself; other times, I made notes about passages and shared them only with my friends who I could invite to use Subtext via Facebook or email. </p>
<p>But what&#8217;s to stop someone from posting something inaccurate or abusive? Users can flag any note as inappropriate or as a spoiler, and the note is reviewed by the company. Users can vote on others&#8217; comments, and over time, comments with more votes will be more broadly distributed. </p>
<p>As of now, authors and experts have enhanced just 18 books in Subtext, though users have left thousands of notes across books. The few books enhanced by authors or experts were fun to read. Steven Levy remarked on a line in his book, &#8220;In the Plex,&#8221; that described his travels from San Francisco to Tokyo, Beijing, Bangalore and Tel Aviv: &#8220;Newsweek paid for my trip, shelling out over $10,000 for my expenses. Kind of ironic because a couple of years later, Newsweek itself sold for $1.&#8221; </p>

<p>A new personalized-reading app for the iPhone is being launched by Flipboard, the design-centric company that led the customized-news charge with its app for iPad. News can be rapidly browsed with a thumb flick from the hand holding the iPhone, like a digital Rolodex. It&#8217;s the kind of thing you&#8217;ll want to show off to friends.</p>
<p>Flipboard&#8217;s iPad rivals aren&#8217;t far behind in the jump to phones, though each take a unique approach in how to a user personalizes content. Zite is an algorithm-generated personalized-magazine app for the iPad that plans to release an iPhone app very soon, perhaps even this week. A phone version is planned for AOL Editions, a personalized news magazine delivered to the iPad once a day. Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand app for iPad will expand next year to additional platforms, including Android tablets and possibly phones, according to a spokesman.</p>

<p>Google has been working on a personalized-reading app that individuals close to the company say will run on Android tablets and phones, the iPad and the iPhone. It will be released this month with the ability to use multiple accounts, offline reading and over 100 partners, according to the individuals.</p>
<p> For the past week, I&#8217;ve been testing a pre-release version of Flipboard for iPhone. I&#8217;ve also revisited Zite, AOL Editions, Yahoo Livestand and Flipboard on the iPad to check out some updated features in these apps. You may like one more than another depending on how much tweaking you want to do to the app&#8217;s settings. Most allow for users to take an active role in helping the app decide what kinds of things they want to read. Others, like Zite and AOL Editions, add an automated method to the process.</p>
<p>Flipboard for iPhone is enhanced by Flipboard Accounts, which was added to the iPad app last month. The feature lets families sharing iPads give each person an account that saves personalized settings and account information—including from Facebook and Twitter. The first time I signed into my Flipboard account on the iPhone made my phone feel a lot more useful. As I waited in line at Starbucks, I flipped through dozens of news bits and images from Flipboard partners like Bon Appetit and ProPublica, Facebook updates from my friends and tweets I follow. The bottom of each screen looked like a page flapping in the breeze—Flipboard&#8217;s playful way of reminding you to page forward for more content. </p>

<p>A lot is packed into each Flipboard nibble, though I never felt a screen was too crowded. A tap on each tweet pulled up a cartoon word bubble from which I could opt to mute tweets from someone, re-share content or star it as a favorite. Facebook updates displayed who else &#8220;liked&#8221; a status and let me add comments. A mini version of the red Flipboard ribbon, which opens settings on the iPad app, appears on the iPhone.</p>
<p>The Zite app for iPad curates its magazine content by studying a user&#8217;s reading behavior, though readers also can make manual tweaks. Zite can study who users follow on Twitter to generate a magazine filled with similar content. I&#8217;ve used Zite almost every morning for months without having to make any adjustments.</p>
<p>Starting this week, Zite has its first branded channel: Lululemon Athletica, which offers health articles and fitness tips. Zite also has multiple accounts for those who share an iPad.</p>

<p>AOL&#8217;s Editions iPad app is a digital magazine that publishes once a day and has a beginning and an end. This means you can read the entire thing each day—a rarity in the online world of continuous updates. But it also means content can feel outdated at the end of the day. AOL Editions takes an algorithmic approach that can be helped manually. It incorporates Facebook and iCal calendars, so the first page shows calendar events and birthdays. As of October, it can now be read in landscape or portrait view.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s Livestand feels sluggish, with spinning circles appearing on the screen almost every time I tapped on something. The home screen is clearly focused on Yahoo content, according to the large Featured on Livestand section that takes up most of each screen. Even when I selected content I wanted in my Livestand, it was buried in a book labeled Personal Mix, and then I had to dig through sections within this book. </p>
<p>This month, Yahoo will add Twitter sharing (users can currently share to only Facebook or via email), and early next year Livestand will incorporate personal Twitter and Facebook feeds as topics. A subscription model is planned for certain publications. </p>

<p>Here&#8217;s some electric weekend reading for those interested in the push and pull between venture investors and start-ups in the frothy Web 2.0 environment.</p>
<p>In an email to Airbnb CEO and co-founder Brian Chesky (which I obtained, embedded below), former Facebook exec Chamath Palihapitiya, who now <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110603/facebook-loses-another-top-exec-chamath-palihapitiya-to-start-a-vc-fund/">runs an investment fund</a> called the Social+Capital Partnership, is passing on participating in the recent $112 million round for the hot online rental site that was announced in July. </p>
<p>The deal &#8212; which <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110724/airbnb-raises-112-million-for-vacation-rental-business/">values the company at $1.2 billion</a> &#8212; has not officially closed yet, but includes venture firms such as DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz and others. Previous investors include Sequoia Capital.</p>
<p>Palihapitiya confirmed to me that it was his email and that his possible investment in Airbnb was small. </p>
<p>That said, his concerns center on how much voting control of new investors&#8217; preferred shares the founders have in the latest round and also a $22.5 million cashing out, $21 million of which is going to those founders.</p>
<p>Another $9.6 million is being used to buy secondary stock from current Airbnb shareholders, who have to render parts of their vested stakes for the money.</p>
<p>Such wrangling between investors and entrepreneurs is not uncommon in Silicon Valley these days, as ever-dumber money chases ever-more-powerful geeks. But Palihapitiya&#8217;s email is a smart, reasonable and well-written argument to stop the madness.</p>
<p>According to sources close to Airbnb, the numbers that he refers to below are accurate, as is what appears to be an unusual level of voting control by its founders. Presumably, it is to protect the company from possible future sales on the secondary markets and to keep control with its founders as the number of investors grows.</p>
<p>In any case, the Palihapitiya email to Chesky is well worth the read (I have removed email addresses as a courtesy):</p>

<p>Thanks again for giving me the chance to participate in your latest financing. I had a chance to review the docs at length yesterday and I wanted to follow up as, quite honestly, I&#8217;ve never seen a deal like this over ~60 investments I&#8217;ve done and I&#8217;m pretty concerned.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m all for getting the best valuation you can, minimizing dilution and maximizing control. We did this brilliantly at Facebook…all of our financings (except our first $$$ from Peter Thiel) were done not out of necessity but opportunity. As such, our investors had virtually no control and it resulted in a much better outcome. As we&#8217;ve discussed, I generally don&#8217;t believe investors add much to a success story and so minimizing their impact is a great strategy when you are onto something that is working.</p>
<p>This said, while several of these concepts are reflected in the current deal, there is one big thing that I am fundamentally against and violates my principles and will prevent me from participating in your round. When I saw that you guys were taking $31M out of the company, I didn&#8217;t think much of it as I just assumed it would entirely be via a secondary sale. </p>
<p>But as I understand the deal, it seems that you are doing only $9.6M in secondary and $22.5M as a dividend to common (of which $21M goes to you and your co-founders). I am really uncomfortable with this and don&#8217;t think its in the spirit of building a good, long term business. Effectively, it is a strategy that allows you guys to take money out of the business and not dilute yourself &#8212; I&#8217;m not sure why this is such a big deal when you guys are almost 90% vested and the financing is at $1.2B where your dilution is marginal. Further, it excludes many of the employees that probably have helped you and your co–founders get the company to this place as most of these folks probably don&#8217;t have any stock but have unexercised stock options and thus won&#8217;t get a dividend.</p>
<p>My basic principle on this stuff is that if you want liquidity, that&#8217;s fine, but you should make it available to everyone. Otherwise, no one should get it. Your current deal is the farthest away from this principle that I&#8217;ve seen in a while…this strategy has been done once before &#8212; at Groupon. We can see how &#8220;well&#8221; they are doing and how short term the investor community is now viewing their motives. I really think you can do better than this…and that you are better than this.</p>
<p>Separately, when you look at successful tech companies, it seems that dividends are an approach used by cash rich operations to distribute excess earnings &#8212; in fact, the most successful, cash rich tech company in the world, Apple, hasn&#8217;t issued a dividend and they have more than $75B in cash! Again, while I think Airbnb will be a good company, this is nowhere near the truth now &#8212; you guys still need to scale and build this thing for the future.</p>
<p>I really think you are onto something but I would implore you to not take the easy way out. Treat your employees the same as you&#8217;d treat yourself. Do things that you will be proud of and can defend to anyone including your Board, employees, prospective hires etc. In such a competitive hiring market, you are competing with not just your obvious competitors, but also any successful tech company who is also looking for great talent. A principle that treats your employees as well as you&#8217;d treat yourself is a huge strategy for differentiation, retention and long term happiness of the exact types of people you will need to be successful. In contrast, if you are viewed as self-dealing and shady, it will only hurt your long term prospects…</p>
<p>In summary, I&#8217;m passing on this financing because I strongly disagree with what&#8217;s going on. I&#8217;m not sure who advocated this approach but I did mention this to Reid [Hoffman, another Airbnb investor via Greylock Partners] last night and he was of a similar mind to myself and surprised this was the approach being taken. If you want some good advice &#8212; I would ask that you consider pinging him about different ways to think about going about the liquidity portion.  </p>
<p>If you change your mind on how to close this financing, let me know and I&#8217;d love to reconsider. Otherwise, good luck and lets keep in touch.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Encyclopaedia Britannica has been the most prestigious general encyclopedia in the English language for what seems like forever. But it has always been expensive, and a bit stodgy. Today, when people need to look up information, they&#8217;re likely to just do a Web search, or to consult the free, community-written, online encyclopedia, Wikipedia.</p>

<p>The Britannica, however, isn&#8217;t going away, or ignoring the digital world. It has long had a paid website. When it comes to school research, it is often trusted by many teachers and parents over less rigorously vetted sources. And now, it is about to launch a slick iPad app containing its entire content at a greatly reduced price: $2 a month, or $24 a year, versus $70 a year for the Web version and about $1,400 for the venerable print version. (People who pay for the Web version also get access to the iPad app at no extra cost.)</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing this new iPad app, and I like it. It is much cleaner and more attractive than the cluttered Britannica website and sports some nice features, including a dynamic &#8220;link map&#8221; showing the relationship between topics in a visual format. Unlike the Web version, it is free of ads. The app is expected to be available in a couple of weeks.</p>
<p>Whether or not this new Britannica app is for you will be a personal decision based on what you&#8217;re looking for; and how much you value an edited, highly curated source over the broader, more easily updated, but crowd-sourced, Wikipedia, which also is available via a variety of iPad apps. Of course, many subscribers to Britannica will still use Wikipedia or other Web sources for research.</p>

<p>Since I don&#8217;t presume to be an academic expert, for this review I focused mostly on the experience of using the forthcoming Britannica app, rather than attempting to analyze its contents. Still, some content comparisons with Wikipedia are useful to keep in mind. </p>
<p>The Britannica app contains 140,000 articles. Wikipedia has about 3.7 million. Many contemporary topics, like the latest in pop culture, or some current public figures, are included in Wikipedia, but missing from Britannica. For instance, the widely praised and popular TV show &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; gets lavish coverage in Wikipedia, but doesn&#8217;t make the cut in Britannica.</p>
<p>On the other hand, there are some topics in Britannica&#8217;s smaller collection of articles that I couldn&#8217;t locate in Wikipedia. One example: an article on Suzanne Douvillier, described by Britannica as &#8220;probably the first woman choreographer in America.&#8221; </p>
<p>And Britannica has many articles written by credentialed academics, journalists and other experts, while it can be difficult to discern the credentials, or even the real name, of a Wikipedia contributor.</p>
<p>The forthcoming Britannica iPad app, which also is slated to appear later in an iPhone and Android version, is handsome and colorful. It&#8217;s free to download and offers a small amount of free content, even for nonsubscribers. But the vast majority of its content is accessible only to subscribers.</p>
<p>Perhaps the coolest feature is the link map, triggered from an icon at the top of each article page. This generates a spider web of icons representing other articles related to the one you were reading. </p>
<p>For instance, the link map for the article on Apple Chairman Steve Jobs spawns tendrils leading to articles on things like &#8220;personal computer&#8221; and &#8220;software.&#8221; If you then tap on say, &#8220;software,&#8221; more tendrils appear, leading to topics like &#8220;Bill Gates&#8221; or &#8220;open source.&#8221; You can tap on any of the icons to read the underlying article.</p>
<p>This kind of visual array of related items isn&#8217;t a new idea. In fact, there is an iPad app called WikiNodes which does something similar for Wikipedia content. But Britannica has implemented the idea nicely.</p>
<p>The home page of the Britannica app features a large daily color photo with an accompanying free article related to the picture. For instance, a photo of the Croatian National Theatre links to a free article on the country&#8217;s capital, Zagreb. </p>
<p>Also on the home page is an event that occurred that day, such as the birth of the actress Brigitte Bardot, which can be tapped to reveal an article about her. </p>
<p>In addition, the home page features a large search box for looking up topics and three links in a section labeled &#8220;Browse.&#8221; One, called &#8220;A-Z,&#8221; allows you to just leaf through the Britannica alphabetically. Another, called Top Articles, includes 100 free articles on popular topics like the &#8220;Amazon River,&#8221; &#8220;the Beatles,&#8221; &#8220;the French Revolution&#8221; or &#8220;William Shakespeare.&#8221; The third is an expanded list of events and births that occurred on the day you are using the app.</p>
<p>Beyond the couple of free home page articles and the 100 free top articles, nonsubscribers will only see the first 100 words or so of each article.</p>
<p>When viewing an article, you can read through it by merely swiping from page to page, a process I found quick and reliable. A progress bar and page number shows where you are in an article, but there is no bookmark feature. The font size can be increased or decreased.</p>
<p>To the left of each article, there are icons that allow you to save it for offline reading, mark it as a favorite, or email a link to the Web version of that article, which can be read even by a nonsubscriber. A section of the app called My Britannica lists all your saved, favorite and recently viewed articles. I found all of this easy to discover and use.</p>
<p>At the top of each article, there are icons that, when tapped, display the table of contents for the article, and a gallery of images from the article, expanded to a larger size.</p>
<p>I found some things missing from the app, including some features that are present in Britannica&#8217;s website. </p>
<p>The most glaring omission is the lack of links to related sources outside the encyclopedia. There are also no videos in the app. And you can&#8217;t print articles from the app, though Britannica says it plans to add printing and the ability to post references to articles to social networks.</p>
<p>Especially for students, or anyone who values what Britannica has to offer, I found the new Britannica iPad app to be a pleasing, easy way to navigate through a large body of knowledge.</p>

<p>The arena for news readers on tablets and smartphones is competitive, with high-profile efforts such as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">Flipboard</a>, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110210/yahoos-got-a-digital-newstand/">Livestand</a> from Yahoo, AOL&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/aol-finally-ready-with-editions-its-ipad-magazine/">Editions</a> and start-ups such as Pulse and Zite.</p>
<p>The reason for CNN&#8217;s acquisition interest &#8212; as well as look-sees from several other publishers &#8212; is not a surprise: As readers turn more toward using these mobile devices to consume content, big media companies are trying to acquire the technology to serve up their fare to them.</p>
<p>It is a dicey arena, though, where content aggregation meets (and crashes into) content lifting. Vancouver-based Zite, for example, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite/">was sent a cease-and-desist letter in March</a>, by a panoply of media companies (not CNN!) alleging various copyright violations.</p>
<p>That happened <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110308/zite-launches-even-more-personalized-ipad-magazine-app/">right after it was launched</a>, with $4 million in funding from angel investors and Canadian grants and an innovative personalized article-picking algorithm. </p>
<p>As Liz Gannes wrote then:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>[Then] Zite CEO Ali Davar describes the iPad as a way to &#8220;emancipate the technology&#8221; his team originated at research at the University of British Columbia.</p>
<p>It had previously been put to work in a browser plug-in called Worio. And, as you might have guessed, browser plug-ins are a tough business.</p>
<p>The free Zite app imports a user&#8217;s Twitter tweets, follows and Google Reader subscriptions, offers lists of pre-made categories, and then solicits feedback and refines over time a list of topics and sources the user is interested in. It features articles based on their popularity, number of shares from a user&#8217;s network and topic relevance. (Davar said he thinks a person&#8217;s Facebook network data is too heterogeneous to reliably recommend articles, so it’s not included as an option.)</p></blockquote>
<p>Last week, a Canadian site called <a href="http://www.techvibes.com/blog/vancouvers-zite-to-be-acquired-by-cnn-for-20-25-million-2011-08-22">Techvibes</a> first wrote about the possibility of the sale of Zite to CNN, which is based in Atlanta and owned by Time Warner.</p>
<p>In a press release, CNN said Zite would remain a standalone unit, as a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNN, and that CEO Mark Johnson will continue to run Zite&#8217;s operations, but now in San Francisco. CNN also said that Davar will remain an executive director and Mike Klass will continue as CTO.</p>
<p>In a statement, Johnson said: &#8220;Zite is thrilled about combining forces with CNN to create a world-class news discovery platform. In CNN, we have found a partner who shares our vision and passion. Being part of the CNN family gives us the capital to grow Zite&#8217;s business and continue to innovate in the space.&#8221;</p>

<p>In an important deal for social reading app Flipboard, it has partnered with magazine giant Condé Nast to offer a slew of titles with branded advertising from major marketers American Express and Lexus.</p>
<p>The pair will share in the specially designed program, which will include the New Yorker, Wired and Bon Appetit. Additional magazines will be added, the companies said.</p>
<p>Flipboard, which is a popular and elegant app for the Apple iPad, has been trying to create strong ties with big publishers as it seeks to dominate distribution in the fast-growing social reading arena. It recently struck a deal with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/flipboards-newest-feature-oprah/">OWN</a>, for example, the new cable network Oprah Winfrey has launched with Discovery.</p>

<p>Late last month, BoomTown posted about a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation">huge venture funding effort</a> by the high-profile and even more highly designed social media reading app for the Apple iPad, Flipboard.</p>
<p>Today, its co-founder and CEO Mike McCue confirmed the $50 million round at an eye-popping $200 million valuation, in a wide-ranging interview at the start-up&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., HQ.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously thrilled, because we think it confirms our focus that people want a beautifully designed way to interact with content and to share it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And there is a lot more to come&#8211;on a scale of one to 10, we&#8217;re just at a two or three.&#8221;</p>
<p>The bulk of the new second round of funding&#8211;Flipboard had previously raised $10.5 million&#8211;came from New York-based Insight Venture Partners.</p>
<p>Insight&#8217;s Jerry Murdock said in an interview that he was excited about the idea of &#8220;social endorsement&#8221; that Flipboard was pioneering.</p>
<p>&#8220;We back great entrepreneurs and Flipboard is that and also in an obviously unique position to solve a problem of media consumption in the digital age,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The sky is the limit. Or more precisely it is the best environment to consume curated real-time content for Twitter and Facebook, because of the user experience and social endorsement integration with the content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Insight is also an investor in Twitter.</p>
<p>Also stepping up in the new Flipboard round is Comcast&#8217;s venture arm, as well as previous investors, including Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Twitter co-founder and product guru Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder and Asana dude Dustin Moskovitz, the ubiquitous Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>&#8220;From a Comcast perspective, we&#8217;re intrigued with Mike and what he&#8217;s doing with content aggregation,&#8221; said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101115/exclusive-comcasts-top-digital-exec-amy-banse-to-open-new-silicon-valley-equity-fund-for-cable-giant-and-nbc">Amy Banse</a>, Comcast Interactive Capital&#8217;s new head. &#8220;We think we can learn from him and he from us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime entrepreneur McCue (Netscape, Tellme) and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million">launched to much attention in July</a>.</p>
<p>The elegant Flipboard&#8211;which McCue recently told me in an onstage interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin had zero revenues thus far&#8211;has changed the game on the consumption of social media.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from media RSS feeds and sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In its current offering, there are pull-quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of linked-out content. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on a social networking or microblogging site.</p>
<p>McCue said the new giant pile of cash will be used to increase its 32-person staff to about 50, international expansion, small acquisitions and more product development on more platforms.</p>
<p>The next in the arena will be the iPhone version of Flipboard, said McCue, followed by one for the Google Android mobile operating system eventually.</p>
<p>Left unsaid, of course, was the need for funding to fight the likelihood of increased competition in the hot space for delivering both professional and social content to consumers on a wide range of devices.</p>
<p>Rivals are varied, such as Silicon Valley&#8217;s most adorable news reader start-up <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Pulse</a> and also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite">Zite</a>, a news reader which was recently sued for copyright infringement by a group of major publishers.</p>
<p>There are bigger potential players, such as Google, which is trying to find various ways to move into the social space.</p>
<p>In fact, said several sources, Google and others have made acquisition approaches to Flipboard, which has instead opted for raising more funding and staying independent for now.</p>
<p>McCue declined to talk about that, but did note that he is not surprised by publisher interest, especially of the worried and wary kind, in the arena.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anyone not respectful of others&#8217; content is going to get in that kind of trouble,&#8221; he said, noting Flipboard has struck deals with 17 big publishers so far, including this morning&#8217;s announcement about a partnership with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Oprah Winfrey&#8217;s and Discovery&#8217;s OWN cable network</a>. &#8220;There is not one half to this equation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>McCue said advertising will be the key to Flipboard&#8217;s business plan in the future, although it&#8217;s not clear if the company will ever sell advertising itself.</p>
<p>Rather, it will partner with publishers seeking better distribution in the explosive tablet and smartphone market, where Flipboard has been gaining traction quickly.</p>
<p>But until that is sorted out, there is now $50 million more in the Flipboard kitty to figure it all out.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this funding, we can grow at the right pace and have a lot of flexibility to get the product right,&#8221; said McCue. &#8220;And, that&#8217;s the most important thing.&#8221;</p>

<p>A panoply of big media giants sent a cease-and-desist letter today to <a href="http://www.zite.com/">Zite</a>, the Apple iPad news reader app.</p>
<p>The Washington Post, AP, Gannett, Getty Images, Time, Dow Jones and many other media organizations were part of the action, which you can read all about below.</p>
<p>Zite bills itself as a &#8220;personalized iPad magazine that gets smarter as you use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not smart enough, it seems, to avoid copyright complaints from the content creators the app sucks in.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Zite application is plainly unlawful,&#8221; said the letter to Zite CEO Ali Davar, noting all kinds of copyright violations.</p>
<p>In a phone interview with BoomTown this afternoon, Davar said Zite would comply with the letter by shifting the content from its &#8220;reading&#8221; mode to a Web one, which points to publisher sites.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a bummer that they did this, but we expected it,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>In a comment he posted below, Davar also wrote:</p>
<p>&#8220;Zite&#8217;s goal is to work with publishers, not to be antagonistic. The few publishers that have contacted us regarding the reading mode view we have complied with their requests and simply switched over to web view. We&#8217;re talking to publishers right now to find a win-win for them monetarily and to at the same time preserve the great user experience.&#8221;</p>
<p>For now, it&#8217;s lose-lose, and the letter is a dramatic shot across the bow of all the many news readers now hitting the market in the wake of the popularity of the Apple iPad tablet.</p>
<p>The social media-focused <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101202/flipboard-partners-with-web-publishers-for-full-content-full-disclosure-including-atd">Flipboard</a> and the news-oriented <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Pulse</a> are two others, both of which have claimed they are working with publishers.</p>
<p>But Pulse <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/meet-the-two-grad-students-who-freaked-out-the-nyt-the-pulse-ipad-app-creators-speak">wrangled with the New York Times</a> over misuse of its RSS feeds and copyright issues, which has since been settled.</p>
<p>Zite showed up <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110308/zite-launches-even-more-personalized-ipad-magazine-app">earlier this month</a>, a product of a machine-learning technology start-up called Worio, which is based in Vancouver, Canada.</p>
<p>The aggregator of personalized content, which has $4 million in angel funding, gets its cues from a user&#8217;s interests.</p>
<p>Zite&#8217;s technology originated at research at the University of British Columbia several years ago.</p>
<p>In an interview with NetworkEffect&#8217;s Liz Gannes a few weeks ago, Davar seemed sanguine about publishers.</p>
<p><a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110308/zite-launches-even-more-personalized-ipad-magazine-app">Wrote Gannes</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The free Zite app imports a user’s Twitter tweets, follows and Google Reader subscriptions, offers lists of pre-made categories, and then solicits feedback and refines over time a list of topics and sources the user is interested in. It features articles based on their popularity, number of shares from a user&#8217;s network and topic relevance. (Davar said he thinks a person&#8217;s Facebook network data is too heterogeneous to reliably recommend articles, so it&#8217;s not included as an option.)</p>
<p>Flipboard itself is likely to add more personalization features; the company bought real-time social discovery technology from Ellerdale and has yet to implement much of it.</p>
<p>Vancouver-based Zite is well-funded, with $4 million from angels and Canadian grants, but it doesn’t have business relationships with publishers. The app lays out pictures and articles, stripping out everything else, including ads. Davar said he doubted this would be a problem. “It would be shortsighted for publishers to think of Zite as us versus them,” he said.</p></blockquote>
<p>Short-sighted maybe, but legally lethal definitely, as you can see by this cease-and-desist letter, as well as a video from Zite on how its app works:</p>

<p>Today, BoomTown braved the floods and skippered <strong>All Things Digital</strong>&#8216;s S.S. Minnow through a Noah-like rainstorm in Silicon Valley to visit the HQ of Pulse.</p>
<p>Last summer, you might recall, co-founders Akshay Kothari and Ankit Gupta of the nifty visual news-reading app got <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/popular-pulse-news-reader-ipad-app-gets-steve-jobs-praise-in-morning-then-booted-from-app-store-hours-later-after-new-york-times-complaint">publicly picked out by Apple&#8217;s Steve Jobs</a> in a speech about third-party innovations on the iPad.</p>
<p>It was a high point for the pair of Stanford University students and newbie entrepreneurs&#8211;except that the very same day, the New York Times slapped them with a cease and desist for misusing its RSS feed.</p>
<p>Dramatic, for sure, but they have made nice with the Times since then and have also raised more than $1 million in funding from a range of notable venture players.</p>
<p>Compared to a similar start-up&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation/">the social news-reading app Flipboard</a>&#8211;that&#8217;s a very small budget for Pulse, which was making a profit on a paid app but, since it went free in November, it&#8217;s not making a profit now.</p>
<p>The move&#8211;while it will require a new business plan at some point&#8211;allowed Pulse usage to explode, hitting three million users today from 250,000 paid users only four months ago.</p>
<p>A lot of that growth has been on Apple&#8217;s iPhone and Google&#8217;s Android smartphones, rather than on the iPad tablet, where Pulse began.</p>
<p>And, although the Android mobile operating system was the last platform to be introduced, it is the fastest growing one, with over one million users on it, Pulse said.</p>
<p>Pulse launched a 2.0 update for the iPhone and Android today, with &#8220;enhanced performance, new content sources and improved sharing with social feeds and news discovery features.&#8221;</p>
<p>That means the app is speedier, has more news offerings in more categories and a bigger dollop of social content and sharing tools with Facebook, Twitter and other social networking companies.</p>
<p>Pulse now has eight employees squeezed into its small offices in downtown Palo Alto, CA&#8211;complete with the required start-up garage door.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I have had a little disagreement with my IT guy. He says that when taking my laptop out in public, I should never type anything with passwords or confidential information. He says that someone can pick up my information. I say that I can&#8217;t believe that everyone in public is totally exposed. There must be some way to protect yourself while on a public network. Who is right?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no single correct answer. It&#8217;s true that thieves in public places can and do steal passwords and other sensitive information transferred over public Wi-Fi hotspots. But it&#8217;s also true that methods like Virtual Private Networks can mitigate this problem, and that most public hotspots are, just by the odds, unlikely to harbor these thieves at any one time. However, my advice is to avoid doing any sensitive tasks, like banking or stock trading, while using public hotspots. And, if you&#8217;re doing anything confidential on your company or home network remotely, use a VPN, which is like a secure tunnel through the internet.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I recently purchased a new iMac and am considering installing anti-virus/spyware/malware programs on it. Reader forums in MacWorld magazine say it&#8217;s not needed. A local newspaper computer columnist says he&#8217;s had Macs since the early &#8217;80s and has never run an AV program and has had no problems. Other online computer advisers say Macs are always vulnerable and advise to run AV programs. Any recommendations here?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>No computer is inherently invulnerable to malicious software, and that includes the Macintosh. However, nearly every malicious program known is meant to run on Windows and simply won&#8217;t operate on the Mac operating system. The handful of Mac viruses and other malware that have been discovered are either proofs of concept, or have spread to very few users and done little or no damage. Most Mac users I&#8217;ve known don&#8217;t run third-party security software and haven&#8217;t had malware problems. So I don&#8217;t routinely recommend Mac security software.</p>
<p>There are two caveats, however. If you are running Windows on your Mac, you should install Windows security software, to run while Windows is in use. Also, Mac users are just as vulnerable as Windows users are to online scams, or to insecure public networks. So, even though you may never get a virus, you still have to be careful about doing sensitive Internet tasks via public hotspots or careless behavior like clicking on links sent you by unknown email senders.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> My car has an audio jack that integrates any input into the sound system. I know that Kindle has a text-to-speech feature. Would I be able to use that feature via the audio jack in the car?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Without having tested your car&#8217;s input jack, I assume the answer is yes. The Kindle has a standard headphone jack. </p>
<p>However, note that the text-to-speech feature works only on certain books, not all of them. Publishers have the right to allow or disallow it for any book. </p>
<p>Also, even if it&#8217;s enabled, it isn&#8217;t the same as an audio book, which is usually read by a trained narrator or by the author. Instead, it&#8217;s a computer doing the reading.</p>

<p>The effort is not without some controversy, as how content is being delivered on the new devices is an ongoing debate.</p>

<p>A study of 1,200 e-reader owners by Marketing and Research Resources Inc. found that 40 percent said they now read more than they did with print books. Of those surveyed, 58 percent said they read about the same as before while two percent said they read less than before. And 55 percent of the respondents in the May study, paid for by e-reader maker Sony Corp., thought they&#8217;d use the device to read even more books in the future. The study looked at owners of three devices: Amazon.com Inc.&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle, Apple Inc.&#8217;s (AAPL) iPad and the Sony (SNE) Reader.</p>
<p>While e-readers are still a niche product just beginning to spread beyond early adopters, these new reading experiences are a big departure from the direction U.S. reading habits have been heading. A 2007 study by the National Endowment for the Arts caused a furor when it reported Americans are spending less time reading books. About half of all Americans ages 18 to 24 read no books for pleasure, it found.</p>
<p>Some 11 million Americans are expected to own at least one digital reading gadget by the end of September, estimates Forrester Research. U.S. e-book sales grew 183 percent in the first half of this year compared with the year-earlier period, according to the Association of American Publishers.</p>

<p>Today, BoomTown gassed up the MINI and headed down to see one of the more innovative new start-ups I have encountered of late.</p>
<p>That would be a new social magazine concept called Flipboard, which is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via a rich app on the Apple (AAPL) iPad.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In this social magazine, there are pull quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of content linked out to. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on Twitter or Facebook.</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur Mike McCue and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard decloaked itself tonight, announcing both a $10.5 million funding from top Silicon Valley power players and also the acquisition of Ellerdale, a relevancy search engine for the real-time Web.</p>
<p>The funders include Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, Index Ventures and a spate of high-profile investors, such as Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moscovitz, angel investor Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. (NWS) exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>Flipboard currently has about 20 employees at its downtown Palo Alto, Calif., HQ.</p>

<p>&#8220;Flipboard is a social magazine filled with all the the things your friends are sharing,&#8221; said McCue, who co-founded Tellme, the speech recognition service acquired by Microsoft (MSFT). &#8220;We&#8217;re trying to bring the timeless principles of print to social media.&#8221;</p>

<p>McCue <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090513/exclusive-tellme-founder-and-gm-mccue-departs-as-microsoft-reorganizes-its-speech-recognition-unit/">left Tellme a year ago</a> and was casting about for a new start-up when he settled on creating a new way to digest and present the noisy flood of information being spewed 24/7 by social networks.</p>
<p>Kleiner Perkins partner John Doerr, who backed Tellme, said he was immediately intrigued by the idea.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is at once intimate and alive and beautiful,&#8221; he said in an interview with me earlier today. &#8220;This is the next wave of social media and redefines what magazine is&#8230;and I think it will be one of the defining apps on the iPad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>Ellen Pao, also of Kleiner and a member of Flipboard&#8217;s board, said she hoped publishers, whose Web sites are reconfigured from tweets and other social links by the app, will welcome the new distribution format.</p>
<p>&#8220;Traditional publishing is facing a crossroads and this imagines it from the ground up,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I hope it paves the way.&#8221;</p>

<p>We&#8217;ll see about old media reactions, which has been decidedly mixed to aggregation apps like this.</p>
<p>The New York Times (NYT), for example, attacked rather than embraced another <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/popular-pulse-news-reader-ipad-app-gets-steve-jobs-praise-in-morning-then-booted-from-app-store-hours-later-after-new-york-times-complaint">terrific news reading iPad app called Pulse</a>, accusing it of misusing its content.</p>
<p>It was a stupid move against inexorable concepts such as Pulse and Flipboard, which are beginning to make sense of the changing digital information landscape.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The tech industry and media are focused on Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) forthcoming iPad tablet computer, a multifunction device that includes an e-book reader. Meanwhile, with much less fanfare, other companies are pressing ahead with conventional, dedicated e-readers aimed at the leader in the category: Amazon&#8217;s Kindle.</p>

<p>These more focused, monochrome devices aren&#8217;t as flashy or as versatile as the iPad, which handles everything from email to games. But they cost less and are aimed wholly at people who seek to read books and periodicals in digital form.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing one such new e-reader from a company that has been in the business for years, but is mainly known in Europe. It is called the Irex DR800SG and costs $400 at bestbuy.com (BBY)—about $140 more than the Kindle. While the DR800SG uses the same electronic ink screen technology as the Kindle, it has some major differences: in screen size, in user interface, and in the way it wirelessly downloads books and newspapers.</p>
<p>The Irex is shorter but wider than the Kindle, and has an 8.1-inch screen, versus the Kindle&#8217;s 6-inch screen. It&#8217;s slightly thicker than the Kindle, but about 25% heavier. It has a single, thin page-turning and menu button on the left side, while the Kindle has larger, multiple buttons on both sides. Both devices claim to hold about 1,500 books.</p>
<p>Irex, a Los Angeles-based company whose products are engineered in the Netherlands, produced its first e-reader in 2004, but this new model is its first aimed specifically at the American market and its first to use the cellular 3G network for downloading content.</p>

<p>The new Irex has some advantages over the Kindle. Its larger screen makes for a better reading experience, allowing many more words to show on the page, at similar font sizes. The screen also seems slightly sharper.</p>
<p>The Irex looks sleeker than the Kindle, because it has a much thinner bezel around the screen, due mainly to the lack of a physical keyboard. It also does a better job of organizing your reading material, grouping items into separate folders for books, newspapers, and personal documents.</p>
<p>And, instead of being linked to a single online store, like Amazon (AMZN), it uses a &#8220;mall&#8221; concept, designed to allow users to choose from many different online stores, though only two are available now. The principal merchant in the mall so far is the Barnes &#038; Noble e-book store—the same one used on the Barnes &#038; Noble (BKS) Nook e-reader—which claims about a million titles. The other store is called NewspaperDirect, which claims over 1,000 newspapers.</p>
<p>However, in my tests, I found the Irex much clumsier to use than the Kindle and, because of that, I still prefer the Amazon device. For instance, the Irex requires a stylus—an ancient and fading navigation device—for some operations. Yet it lacks a holder for this pointer except in the leather cover, so the stylus is easy to lose. The Irex also lacks a Home button, a note-taking function, any way to highlight text and a built-in dictionary.</p>
<p>More important, I found the mall concept for downloading books to be frustrating. Because the Irex isn&#8217;t seamlessly linked to its own online store, I had to establish, or sign into, four different accounts to test the device fully. Even after that, each Barnes &#038; Noble download required multiple steps. On the Kindle, ordering books is a breeze, and they appear almost instantly after you click a single &#8220;Buy&#8221; button.</p>
<p>This last issue is a trade-off between greater choice and simpler, quicker functionality. Some readers will be willing to make that trade-off, especially if Irex is able to add specialized stores in the future that offer, say, a large selection of non-English-language books. But, for most Americans with typical book needs, I find the current trade-off unacceptable.</p>
<p>For example, books I bought from Barnes &#038; Noble appeared slowly on the Irex. The device seemed to have to turn on its radio and establish a new connection each time. Also, until I opened each book, they appeared on the screen identified only by a geeky file name. And, after I opened each, there was a long delay while the device did something called &#8220;counting pages.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company says that some of these shortcomings will be fixed in a software update due as soon as next month. It promises there will be a note-taking function, speedier wireless connections and the elimination of the counting-pages delay. It also says it is working on a universal log-in system for its mall of stores. But highlighting and a dictionary are only being &#8220;considered&#8221; for a future revision.</p>
<p>On the bright side, I was able to easily plug the Irex into a PC and Mac, and manually drag onto it personal PDF files, pictures and even a free book I bought at a Web site.</p>
<p>Irex says it is working on a color model for next year. I hope it works more smoothly than the DR800SG.</p>

<p>Not necessarily, according to a new study from the British Academy. In fact, in an examination of schoolchildren’s texting habits, the kids who used more &#8220;textisms&#8221;&#8211;abbreviations such as “plz” (please) and “l8ter” (later)&#8211;showed higher scores on some spelling, phonetics, reading comprehension and other English language competency tests.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have found no support in our research for the negative media and public speculation surrounding mobile phone use, text language and its effects on literacy development,&#8221; wrote study authors Beverly Plester and Clare Wood, both psychology professors at Coventry University in the United Kingdom.</p>
