Start-Ups Are Drawn to Pulse of Downtown

Many Silicon Valley start-ups are increasingly hankering for downtown, urban offices. The shift can be seen in Redwood City, where many tech companies long have made their homes–but primarily in the Redwood Shores office parks where Oracle Corp. and Electronic Arts Inc. are headquartered. This year, a trickle of start-ups has moved into downtown Redwood City, with digital ad companies Turn Inc., YuMe Inc. and compensation research firm Equilar Inc., among others, relocating to the area since January.

Oracle announced its plan to acquire Sun in April of last year. Today, the company finally closed the $7.4 billion deal. The announcement came just hours before Oracle execs laid out their strategy for the combined companies during a meeting with reporters and industry analysts at Oracle’s Redwood Shores, Calif., headquarters. The biggest news coming out of that event: Fewer than 2,000 employees will lose their jobs in the wake of the merger–significantly fewer than had been feared.

Oracle Rallies; Waiting Out the Storm in Redwood Shores

Oracle shares today have rallied impressively following last night’s better-than-expected results for its fiscal third quarter ended in February. The analysts who track the stock were generally impressed with the numbers; I would note that is the same crew that had been cutting expectations heading into the quarter. (Though even most of the estimate-cutters continued to recommend the stock.)
