We’ll soon out. </p>
<p>AT&#038;T said today that it will begin peddling the Palm (PALM) Pre Plus on May 16. Price: <a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3872098&amp;id=8576093908&amp;comments&amp;ref=mf">$150 after contract and mail-in rebate</a>, which seems a bit high for a device that can be purchased from <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100504/palm-handsets-priced-to-pwn/">Verizon (VZ) for $29 along with free Mobile Hotspot service, or from Amazon (AMZN) for one cent</a>. </p>
<p>That said, AT&#038;T (T) is, for a limited time, offering a free Touchstone charging dock to anyone who buys a Pre Plus from one of its retail store. </p>
<p>That’s something, I suppose. Though it seems far too little, far too late at this point. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100322/palm-pre-plus-pixi-plus-to-go-head-to-head-against-iphone-on-att/">As I wrote earlier this year</a>, &#8220;Given the iPhone’s high profile on AT&#038;T and rumors that Apple (AAPL) is prepping a new iteration of the device for summer release, one wonders if Palm’s smartphones will be anything more than an afterthought for the carrier and its customers.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interestingly, AT&#038;T’s announcement says nothing about the Pixi Plus, which it had also planned to add to its lineup. Has it been dropped, or will AT&#038;T add the handset at a later date?</p>

This morning, Apple said it <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/apple-sells-over-300000-ipads-first-day-89904642.html">sold over 300,000 iPads in the U.S.</a> as of midnight Saturday, April 3&#8211;including pre-orders. That’s about <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100404/600000-700000-ipads-sold-saturday/">half the sales Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster estimated</a> in a Sunday research note, but, ironically, right on target with his earlier estimate. </p>
<p>Interestingly, the sales figure is also on par with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/25/apple-sold-270-000-iphones-in-the-first-30-hours/3">270,000 first-gen iPhones</a> Apple (AAPL) sold during that device&#8217;s first 30 hours at market in 2007.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s important to remember, though, that this first-day sales number is for Wi-Fi-only iPads sold in the U.S. The figure does not include sales of the 3G version of the device, which arrives at market in a few weeks. Nor does it include <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100327/launch-day-ipads-sold-out/">online pre-orders with an April 12 ship date</a>. Makes you wonder if Apple is purposely lowballing here &#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&#8220;China represents Apple’s next major geographic growth opportunity.&#8221; So says Morgan Stanley (MS) analyst Katy Huberty, who believes the new retail stores the company plans to open in the country in the next few years will spike its sales. </p>
<p>In a research note issued this morning, Huberty describes a &#8220;positive correlation between Apple (AAPL) store expansion and Mac market share&#8221; and applies it to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100225/apples-big-plans-for-china/">Apple&#8217;s plans for 25 new retail stores in China</a>. Though the company has less than one percent market share in China today, she writes, there is significant untapped demand for its products.  </p>
<p>&#8220;Our Dec &rsquo;09 proprietary survey of 1,050 high-end Chinese consumers, representing an addressable population of 50 million, points to strong underlying demand for Apple products&#8230;.What’s more, Chinese Apple product owners are 2x more likely to purchase future Apple products according to our survey. <p>But residents of Manhattan and the city&#8217;s other four boroughs can buy an iPhone directly from AT&amp;T (T) stores. And the city&#8217;s five Apple (AAPL) stores will sell you one, too.</p>
<p>So what gives?</p>
<p>An initial report from <a href="http://consumerist.com/2009/12/att-customer-service-new-york-city-is-not-ready-for-the-iphone.html">Consumerist.com</a>, quoting an AT&amp;T online service rep, suggested that the carrier shut down online sales because &#8220;New York was not ready for the iPhone&#8221; and that the city doesn&#8217;t &#8220;have enough towers to handle the phone.&#8221;</p>
<p>That answer might strike a chord with New York iPhone owners who gripe about the carrier&#8217;s capacity. But it strains credulity: Would AT&amp;T really try to resolve its iPhone problem by hampering iPhone sales&#8211;and not tell anyone in advance? And if so, why not choke off online sales in San Francisco and the Bay Area, where heavy iPhone use also strains the carrier?</p>
<p>New story: Since the Consumerist story appeared Sunday afternoon, AT&amp;T service reps have been telling New Yorkers like me that it won&#8217;t sell us the phone online because of fraud problems.</p>
<p>What does that mean? Sean, the pleasant AT&#038;T rep I talked to tonight, told me he could sell me a refurbished, 8-gigabyte 3G iPhone online or over the phone. But if I wanted a new iPhone, he said, I&#8217;d have to go to a retail store.</p>
<p>Why? &#8220;There&#8217;s actually been a problem in that area with fraud for the iPhone. It&#8217;s kind of a high-risk area.&#8221; Sean then reassured me that he was &#8220;not saying there&#8217;s bad neighborhoods anywhere. That&#8217;s not what that means.&#8221; But he couldn&#8217;t offer any more details.</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/">Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski</a>, in an online chat with a service rep, got a similar answer. As John points out, this answer also doesn&#8217;t make a lot of sense. If New York really is beset by a plague of scammers, why is AT&amp;T selling other expensive smartphones, like Research In Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry line, over the Web? <p>There are other things that don&#8217;t line up here: The AT&amp;T PR rep I talked to tonight knew nothing about this. And shutting off online sales of the company&#8217;s most high-profile phone to the biggest city in America seems like the kind of thing a corporate spokesman would have an inkling about.</p>
<p>Likewise, AT&amp;T&#8217;s <a href="http://www.google.com/search?q=iphone&amp;ie=utf-8&amp;oe=utf-8&amp;aq=t&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;client=firefox-a">Google (GOOG) ad campaign</a> sends New Yorkers searching for iPhones directly to <a href="http://www.att.com/wireless/iphone//">this page</a>, which doesn&#8217;t mention that you can&#8217;t actually buy an iPhone online. If you click on the &#8220;Buy Now&#8221; and give the site a New York zip code, you get the following nonsensical message: &#8220;We&#8217;re sorry, there are no Packages &amp; Deals available at this time. Please check back later.&#8221;</p>
<p>My hunch: This is a decision that didn&#8217;t get run all the way up the chain of command. And it&#8217;s one that&#8217;s going to get reversed sooner than later. I&#8217;ll update when I hear back from AT&amp;T.</p>
<p>UPDATE: This won&#8217;t clear anything up: &#8220;We periodically modify our promotions and distribution channels,&#8221; says AT&amp;T PR guy Fletcher Cook, via email.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>&#8216;Tis almost the night before Christmas, and plenty of households are hoping Santa will slide down the chimney with a new computer in his pack. For longtime Windows users who receive new Apple (AAPL) computers, the unfamiliarity of the Mac operating system could leave them pining for their old PC.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve put together a quick and dirty guide for new Apple users that explains some of the ways the Mac operating system differs from Windows. It&#8217;s true: The way you&#8217;ll quit programs is different, the keyboards are set up a little differently and even the mouse is different. But once you adjust to these changes, you&#8217;ll be fine. Here&#8217;s some help:</p>

<h5 class="subhed">Key to the Keyboard</h5>
<p>Your keyboard is missing a Backspace button, so just use the Delete button, which is set up by default to work as the Backspace button does on a Windows keyboard. </p>
<p>If you want to delete forward on a Mac laptop or a new iMac, hold the Function key (FN) while pressing Delete. And for keyboard shortcuts like pressing Control+C to copy or Control+V to paste on a Windows keyboard, use the Command key, which has a flower-like symbol, in place of Control. Likewise, use the Option key rather than Alt to type special characters.</p>
<p>If you miss Control+Alt+Delete, you can end frustratingly slow applications on the Mac by pressing Command+Option+Escape to force programs to quit.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mousing Around</h5>
<p>The mouse on a desktop Mac looks like it has only one button, and the trackpad on most Mac laptops has no visible buttons at all—the whole pad is a single, large button. These designs send people who usually use two-button mice into a tizzy about how to right click.</p>
<p>Never fear, right click is still near! On Mac laptops, right click by placing two fingers down on the trackpad (it&#8217;s easiest with your pointer and middle fingers) and click the trackpad with another finger (like your thumb). New MacBooks also will right click when you place two fingers on the trackpad and press down. Using a one-button Apple mouse, just press Control and then click to see the same right-click functionality. On the Mighty Mouse, enable right-click functionality in System Preferences, then just touch where the right-click button should be and it will work. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;re sick of these new shortcuts, just plug in a mouse with a real right-click button and it will likely work on the Mac.</p>
<p>Scroll up or down on any screen by placing two fingers anywhere on the trackpad and motioning up or down. New MacBooks have a large, glass trackpad that responds to iPhone-like multi-touch gestures like pinching to zoom in or out on a screen. Four fingers on the trackpad initiate one of three gestures: Swiping up clears everything off the screen to show the desktop; swiping left or right opens the application switcher view so you can select which application you want; swiping down launches Exposé, which shows all opened windows.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Maximize, Close, Quit</h5>
<p>In Windows, users can hit one button in the top right corner of each window to maximize the window; Macs have a small green circle in the top left corner that makes a window larger, but not maximized, so this can be irritating. </p>
<p>Windows lets users close an application by hitting the &#8220;X&#8221; in the top-right corner; the Mac version of this is a small red dot in the top left, but clicking it only closes a window rather than quitting the application. To do that, you&#8217;ll need to press Command+Q or choose to quit from the application menu at the top left of the screen.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Where&#8217;s My Stuff?</h5>
<p>Rather than opening My Computer as you would on a Windows PC, double click on the desktop icon representing your hard drive to see all files, folders, applications and software programs. Spotlight, located in the top right corner of all screens, can be used to search for anything on your Mac. The Dock, located by default at the bottom of the screen, replaces the taskbar to hold applications, folders and files.Items can be dragged into the dock for quick access. Applications are located on the left side of the Dock; Stacks are on the right and these enable instant folder access from the Dock.Two built-in Stacks come pre-loaded for Documents and Downloads.</p>
<p>The Apple menu, represented with a small apple icon in the top left of any screen, works like parts of the Windows Start menu.</p>
<p>System Preferences in the Mac Dock works much like the Control Panel on a Windows PC. Here, you can change your screensaver, desktop picture, mouse and keyboard settings, energy-saving options, parental controls and network setup. </p>
<p>An optional Mac version of Microsoft Office runs Word, Excel, and PowerPoint programs that are compatible with Office files from Windows PCs. Instead of Outlook, Microsoft (MSFT) includes in Mac Office a program with similar functions called Entourage. Macs come out of the box with Apple-produced programs that include Mail, Address Book and iCal. Mail works with a range of email services. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Where&#8217;s Internet Explorer?</h5>
<p>Instead of Internet Explorer, Apple comes loaded with its own Web browser called Safari, represented in the Dock by a blue and red compass. Browsers like Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox or Google (GOOG) Chrome will work on the Mac if you want to download and install them, but Internet Explorer still runs only on Windows.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Ejecting Hurts</h5>
<p>On a Windows PC, anything inserted into the computer—from memory cards to USB flash drives—can be pulled out almost anytime with no repercussions. On a Mac, you must first eject these items before you yank them out. Ejecting can be done by dragging the icon representing that item from the desktop into the Trash, Apple&#8217;s version of the Windows Recycling Bin, or by selecting an Eject button beside its name. If you delete something on your Mac, it&#8217;s tossed into the Trash, and an option in Trash will empty it just as you can empty the Recycling Bin in Windows. Macs offer a Secure Empty Trash command in the Finder that securely deletes files so no part of them can be recovered. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Ask at the Store </h5>
<p>If you buy a new Mac, Apple retail stores will recycle your old computer free, and if you buy Apple&#8217;s $99-a-year One to One membership, you can take your PC into an Apple retail store to have its data transferred to the Mac or to get personal tutorials. Nokia said today <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703514404574587253226298062.html">it is shutting down stores in New York and Chicago</a> as part of a new retail strategy that includes more cooperation with carriers and big-box retailers&#8211;and, one hopes, better sales. </p>
<p>Earlier this week, Nokia (NOK) announced plans to  <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091208/nokia-shutters-shop/">close its flagship store on London’s Regent Street</a>. These stores were designed to &#8220;inspire and educate consumers to the benefits of mobility&#8221; and broaden the appeal of the Nokia brand but have apparently done neither, particularly in the North American market, which is among Nokia’s weakest.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no reason for Nokia to have the flagship stores&#8211;they cost too much compared to the value they create,&#8221; <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE5B85GQ20091210?type=technologyNews">Strand Consult analyst John Strand told Reuters</a>. &#8220;Flagship stores are important in fashion industry: Apple is fashion. Nokia is consumer electronics.&#8221;</p>
<p>In the end, isn&#8217;t the rent the company would have paid on these retail spaces better spent on, you know, developing a worthy rival to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone?</p>

<p>&#8220;On the new online Microsoft Store, we’ve added a bunch of new products, including Windows 7 PCs as well as select 3rd party software and accessories,&#8221; <a href="http://trevinchow.com/blog/2009/10/21/the-new-microsoft-store-launches-with-windows-7/">Trevin Chow, senior lead program manager for Microsoft Store, said in a blog post announcing the move</a>. &#8220;And let’s not forget a ton of gaming products that have been added including a bunch of the top selling Xbox 360 titles.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting. Not exactly sure what the upside is to selling PCs online when you don&#8217;t make them. It&#8217;s not like Microsoft (MSFT) will be offering a better experience than, say, Best Buy (BBY), HP (HPQ) or Dell (DELL). And an online outlet doesn&#8217;t afford the company the same opportunity to cultivate the &#8220;Microsoft Experience&#8221; it&#8217;s clearly going for in its brick-and-mortar outlets. So why bother?</p>
<p>A unified experience online and off, I suppose. And, if the infrastructure is in place to sell through one channel, why not sell through both? Of course, the downside is that if you don&#8217;t execute well, you risk giving customers another lousy experience with which to associate your products.</p>

<p>In a message to clients Tuesday, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster noted that Apple’s online store is currently showing 7 to 10 day lead times for its new lower-priced 13-inch MacBook Pros, and a number of the company’s retail stores are reporting dwindling supplies. “Our records show that Apple has never had a 7-10 day delay on its most popular 13-inch model, with the most recent significant delay being 5-7 days over 2 years ago,” Munster wrote. “We see this as a sign that demand is outpacing the company’s build expectations, and it may take several weeks to reach supply-demand equilibrium. In addition to delays at its online store, Apple retail stores are experiencing shortages in some 13-inch MacBook Pro models. Of the 10 Apple stores we contacted, 7 are short of at least one 13-inch MacBook Pro model.”</p>
<p>That being the case, Munster said he&#8217;s increasingly confident Apple (AAPL) will report sales of 2.2 million Macs for the June quarter. Not quite as high as the nearly 2.5 million Macs the company sold during the same period a year ago, but impressive nonetheless. We are still, after all, in a deep recession. Who said Macs are too pricey?</p>

The answer: 500,000, according to Piper Jaffray&#8217;s Gene Munster, who says early sales will be slower than those of the 3G thanks to a dramatic change in value proposition and a launch limited to eight countries.</p>
<p>“In 2008, Apple introduced the iPhone 3G at $199, a 50 percent reduction from the previous model, which drove demand up significantly,” Munster said in a research note today. “Most customers will be able to purchase the new iPhone 3G S for $199 (the same price as the previous model). As such, the change in value proposition for the iPhone 3G S is not as meaningful as it was for the iPhone 3G, leading to less of a surge in units at launch. Moreover, the iPhone 3G was available in 21 countries at launch vs. the iPhone 3G S which will sell into 8 countries at launch (then over 70 more throughout the summer). These factors lead us to expect about half as many iPhone 3G S units at launch (500k) as Apple sold in the first weekend of iPhone 3G availability in 2008 (1m).”</p>

<p>So expect a big launch weekend for Apple, just not as big as as the one for the iPhone 3G. That said,  500,000 is a lot of iPhones&#8211;roughly five times <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090612/palm-pre-100000-sold-so-far/">the 100,000 Pres that Palm (PALM) was reportedly able to move in that device&#8217;s first week at market</a>. Interestingly, Apple (AAPL) stopped taking U.S. preorders for the new iPhone 3G S for pickup at its stores tomorrow. The company <a href="http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2009/06/18/apple_stops_us_preorders_for_iphone/?rss_id=Boston+Globe+--+Technology+stories">told Bloomberg</a> that it stopped accepting reservations “to make sure we have the new iPhone in stock at every Apple retail store.”</p>

CEA, which hosts the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas every January, said Thursday that it is <a href="http://www.cesweb.org/news/releaseDetail.asp?id=11731">expanding the amount of show floor space dedicated to Apple</a>. Once just a paltry 4,000 square feet, the iLounge Pavilion now maxes out at 25,000 square feet. Once populated with iPod, iPhone, and Mac applications and accessories, the Pavilion will this year feature a section for iPhone apps.</p>
<p>Such a drastic expansion of Apple-related show floor space will no doubt inspire speculation that the Mac maker plans to put in an appearance at CES. But that seems unlikely given the company’s reasons for bowing out of Macworld. “Apple is reaching more people in more ways than ever before, so like many companies, trade shows have become a very minor part of how Apple reaches its customers,” <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081216/apples-last-macworld/">the company said at the time</a>. “The increasing popularity of Apple’s Retail Stores, which more than 3.5 million people visit every week, and the Apple.com website enable Apple to directly reach more than a hundred million customers around the world in innovative new ways.”</p>
<p>In any event, this is unfortunate news for Macworld and IDG, the publishing company that runs it. Without Steve Jobs or even Apple (AAPL) to help it upstage CES as Macworld has done in some years past, the event has far less to offer attendees and presenters than before. Certainly, no one is going to be decamping from Vegas in the middle of CES this year to hit Macworld. There’s no reason to. And with CES ramping up its efforts to woo Apple accessory manufacturers and retailers, well, things aren’t looking too good for Macworld, are they?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s no other major item most of us own that is as confusing, unpredictable and unreliable as our personal computers. Everybody has questions about them, and we aim to help.</p>
<p>Here are a few questions about computers I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>In last week&#8217;s Mailbox, you said that Windows XP machines can slow down over time unless you do &#8220;a lot of techie maintenance.&#8221; What did you mean? I regularly defragment the hard disk, tweak the registry, and clean out temporary files, but my PC is still slow.</em></p>
<p class="answer"> All of these things are helpful, though I don&#8217;t recommend that nontechie users &#8220;tweak&#8221; the Windows registry, which contains vital program information that can mistakenly be removed or altered if you don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re doing. Another speed-enhancing tactic is to use a program like Startup Cop Pro (<a href="http://snipurl.com/b4v91" rel="external">snipurl.com/b4v91</a>) to prevent unneeded programs from running at startup, and one like PC Decrapifier (<a href="http://www.pcdecrapifier.com" rel="external">pcdecrapifier.com</a>) to clean out craplets &#8212; unwanted pre-installed programs.</p>
<p>However, what I had in mind when I wrote that was something more drastic, something a number of techies I know do annually: a complete replacement of Windows. This involves first backing up all your files, and then performing what&#8217;s called a &#8220;clean install&#8221; of Windows XP that wipes out everything on the PC and starts fresh. You then would copy back all your data files and re-install your programs.</p>
<p>This can make the computer feel like new, but the problem is that it can be tricky and tedious for nontechie users. Depending on the source of the copy of Windows XP you are using for the clean install, you may have to locate and re-install drivers for peripheral hardware and for hardware features of your particular make and model of PC. You may run into licensing and activation issues with your re-installed programs. And you may have to download numerous patches and upgrades for Windows itself and for your programs.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I am considering buying one of the new MacBook Pro 15&#8243; laptops. What do you think of the keyboard on this laptop? Is it easy to type on compared to other laptop keyboards? What do you think of the shiny screen?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Because keyboard and screen preferences vary from person to person, I strongly urge all laptop shoppers to try out models they are considering before buying, even if only for a few minutes at a retail store. Having said that, I find the MacBook Pro keyboard to be very comfortable and easy to use, with good key spacing and feel. I personally prefer matte screens to glossy ones, but own laptops with both types and find the glossy ones acceptable, if not optimal.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I use the Windows Mail program that came with Vista on my computer. You say Windows 7 won&#8217;t come with that program. Is there something similar that can be installed?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Microsoft will encourage people to download a similar free program called Windows Live Mail, which is closely tied to its Live online service. Or, you could switch to a competing email program, or rely on Web-based email.</p>

The software uses a technology called &#8220;face detection&#8221; to ID the subjects of photos. It asks you to identify the subjects first and then scans the remainder of your photos; using face recognition, it identifies other photos in which those subjects appear.</p>
<p>Another new iPhoto feature: Places. It does the obvious. Using the GPS geotagging built into newer cameras and &#8220;the best cellphone in the world,&#8221; iPhoto identifies the location at which photos were taken and categorizes them accordingly. What about photos that don&#8217;t include those geotags? Manual entry solves that problem with a little help from Google Maps.</p>
<p>Apple has also added Facebook and Flickr support to iPhoto. Set up your accounts in iPhoto and the software will automatically send your photos to those services and allow your Facebook friends to tag them if you so choose. Beyond these features, iPhoto includes a slick new slideshow and book themes.</p>
