This Week, Google Talked Search; Next Week, Yahoo Does–a.k.a. Kumo-FUD

Suddenly, search! Earlier this week, Google put on a show called “Searchology” about its latest search innovations at its Mountain View HQ. And next Tuesday, Yahoo will trot out its search extravaganza, called “Search chalk talk,” during which top search techies will talk up its more innovative products, such as Build Your Own Search (BOSS) and Search Monkey. Could all this search blabbing have anything to do with a certain upcoming launch of a new search offering by a very rich and even more determined giant tech company? As in: Microsoft and whatever it ends up calling its redone search product, code-named Kumo.

Is Google Insurmountable?

After Google unveiled new features to its search results yesterday, one analyst is saying that the company’s leadership position has become virtually unshakable. In a research report, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said that while the new products–Google Search Options, Google Squared and Rich Snippets–were “more evolutionary than revolutionary,” they demonstrated the company’s continued ability to innovate.

The architects of Google search are holding court at company headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., this morning offering what promises to be a sort of state of the union on search. Overseeing the event, dubbed “Google Searchology”: Udi Manber, VP of Search Engineering, and Marissa Mayer VP of Search Products and User Experience. Key subjects: the challenge of solving every user problem, mobile search across multiple platforms and different UI schemes, and greater user customization through tools like SearchWiki and Google Search Options, a basket of new services just announced.
