A handful of recent analyst notes suggest that BlackBerry's new Q10 smartphone is selling better than expected.

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins’s prediction earlier this year that the company is going to sell a ton of its new Qwerty-keyboard-equipped Q10 smartphone was an aggressive one, but perhaps prescient, as well. A handful of recent analyst notes suggest that the handset is selling better than expected.

A week ago today, Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said his channel checks showed that the Q10 has been pretty well-received by consumers, and said he expects Q10 sales to offset a slowdown in sales of its touchscreen-only predecessor, the Z10.

Then, on Thursday, Societe Generale analyst Andy Perkins raised his rating on BlackBerry to “buy” from “sell,” saying Q10 sales will reach almost one million in the fiscal first quarter. Add those to the four million Z10s that Perkins expects BlackBerry to sell, and that’s five million BB10 handsets total for Q1, which is above the current consensus of three million to four million units for the quarter.

Today comes more good news: Wells Fargo analyst Maynard Um has issued a positive note on BlackBerry, observing that Q10 sales may help the company beat expectations for its fiscal first quarter. Um said his channel checks in the U.S. reveal that the Q10 is off to a good start. “[There has been] Good Q10 customer interest and demand,” Um said. “The Q10’s launch has been much more successful than the Z10 launch, which is consistent with our view that the die-hard BlackBerry installed base of 76 million loyal to the keyboard presents a strong upgrade opportunity.”

Like his colleagues at Jefferies and Societe Generale, Um, too, sees the potential for first-quarter upside over consensus estimates, though he notes that the timing of the Q10’s launch — 14 countries in mid-May; U.S. in June — could limit it.

At $14.50, BlackBerry shares are trading up today.

Fighting over table scraps.

In the race for third mobile platform, there’s a new favorite: Windows Phone.

According to new research from IDC, Microsoft’s mobile operating system accounted for 3.2 percent of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter. That’s a significant gain from the OS’s performance in the first quarter of 2012, which saw it capture a market share of 2 percent. And it was enough for Windows Phone to unseat BlackBerry from its third-place spot and claim the rank for its own.

Admittedly, ousting BlackBerry wasn’t exactly a difficult task. In the first quarter, the struggling handset maker saw its share of global smartphone shipments halved year over year. In Q1 of 2012, it claimed a 6.4 percent share. This year, BlackBerry managed to snag only 2.9 percent.

An unfortunate loss of momentum for BlackBerry, though one that’s not entirely attributable to the ascension of other platforms and a lack of interest in its own. BlackBerry is in the midst of a transition to an entirely new OS, BlackBerry 10. Right now, the company has just two smartphones that use it. The bulk of its handset portfolio continues to run on its older OS. And according to IDC analyst Kevin Restivo, that’s almost certainly having an effect on sales.

“Windows Phone is clearly gaining momentum,” Restivo told AllThingsD. “But BlackBerry’s decline this quarter really has more to do with the lag between sales of its old handsets and its new ones than anything else. Sure, Windows Phone is ahead now, but there’s no guarantee that it will maintain its third-place ranking in upcoming quarters.”

And, as I’ve noted before, third place in the current smartphone OS rankings doesn’t mean much. According to IDC, Google and Apple captured 92.3 percent of all smartphone shipments with their Android/iOS duopoly (Android: 59.1 percent; iOS: 23 percent). In other words, Windows Phone and BlackBerry are so far behind the two leading mobile platforms that their ranking is really just a moot point, anyway.

Launching this summer.

BlackBerry’s annual BlackBerry Live partner conference kicked off Tuesday morning with a keynote from CEO Thorsten Heins and the announcement of the company’s latest BlackBerry 10 handset, the BlackBerry Q5.

Designed for emerging markets, the Q5 is intended to flesh out the lower end of BlackBerry’s new handset portfolio. Details are slim, but the device seems to be the rumored R10 that has been stoking chatter on gadget sites for months now. The Q5 features a Qwerty keyboard and a 3.1-inch touchscreen. BlackBerry is offering it in four colors: Red, white, black and pink. The company expects to bring the Q5 to market sometime this summer; price has yet to be disclosed.

Also announced this morning: BlackBerry 10.1 for the BlackBerry Z10 — which will begin rolling out to U.S. carriers later this month — and BlackBerry Enterprise Service 10.1.

What to expect from BlackBerry's annual developer and partner conference keynote.

For BlackBerry, this past year has been a very different beast from the one that preceded it. This time last year, on the eve of the company’s BlackBerry Live conference (formerly BlackBerry World), the company was making headlines for its dismal financial results, its ongoing search for an adviser to help evaluate its strategic options and its perennially coming-real-soon-now next-generation operating system, BlackBerry 10.

Today, BlackBerry is in a far less precarious position. It has finally managed to ship BlackBerry 10 — along with a couple of handsets on which to run it — and all have been generally well received. The company’s touchscreen smartphone, the Z10, set launch-day sales records in Canada and the U.K.; its Qwerty sibling, the Q10, has been garnering positive reviews; takeover rumors have gone quiet; the company reported a surprise profit in its most recent quarter, and its shares are up some 25 percent since the beginning of the year. While BlackBerry hasn’t yet escaped the skepticism that mercilessly dogged it last year, it has provided investors and developers — and really anyone with an interest in the company — some reason for cautious optimism, despite the still daunting challenges ahead of it.

There’s a lot riding on BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins’s keynote address at BlackBerry Live tomorrow morning, but the company is in a far better place to deliver. So what can we expect from Heins when he takes the stage tomorrow?

An update on BlackBerry 10 handset sales volume and momentum. Heins has previously said he expects to ship “tens of millions” of BlackBerry Q10 handsets. Is that still the goal? What are the company’s expectations for the Z10?

Perhaps, the unveiling of BlackBerry 10.1 for the Z10, which brings a number of new features to the device, including the ability to install Skype.

An update on developer support for BlackBerry 10, the current tally of apps in BlackBerry World, and perhaps the announcement of some new and much-needed marquee apps.
As I’ve previously reported, Netflix and Instagram have both declined to build native apps for BlackBerry 10. BlackBerry has said it is committed to bringing both of them and other top titles to its new platform. Heins’s keynote would be an excellent time to announce a few victories.

Further insight into BlackBerry’s view of the tablet market. Heins recently made headlines for some bearish remarks about the future of tablets, saying, “In five years, I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore.” If that’s the case, what is BlackBerry’s overall view of the future of mobile computing?

An update of BlackBerry’s promised portfolio of BlackBerry 10 devices. What does the lineup look like beyond the Z10 and Q10? When will the rumored R10 ship? The company has already hit the market’s high end, presumably it plans to hit its middle and lower ends as well. What sort of device is it planning for emerging markets?

So, lots of issues to talk about, all of them speaking to a common theme. Now that Heins has seemingly succeeded in righting BlackBerry’s listing ship, where is it headed? And how is it going to get there?

Just you wait, BlackBerry is going to sell a ton of its new Qwerty-keyboard-equipped Q10 smartphone.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly characterized Selfridges & Co.’s smartphone selection as limited.
This according to Thorsten Heins, the struggling smartphone maker’s CEO, and early sales of the device seem to so far support that assertion. Speaking at the Milken Institute conference on Monday, Heins said the company has high hopes for the Q10. “We have very, very good first signs already after the launch in the U.K.,” Heins said. “This is going into the installed base of more than 70 million BlackBerry users, so we have quite some expectations. We expect several tens of million of units.”

Is that a reasonable expectation, or an unreasonable one?

Though it only began shipping in the U.K. a few days ago, the Q10 already seems to be in very high demand. Selfridges & Co., a British department store that had an early exclusive on the Q10, blew through its initial stock within two hours last Friday. And on Monday the store issued a press release declaring the handset its fastest-selling consumer electronics product ever. Said Selfridges exec Julian Slim, “The BlackBerry Q10 has been, without a doubt, the most highly anticipated smartphone we have ever sold and is already our most successful.”

Now, granted, we’re talking about one department store chain with four locations in a single country. Still, Selfridges & Co.’s experience suggests that are plenty of BlackBerry loyalists out there who have been waiting patiently for the company’s next Qwerty phone. And the Q10 has been garnering some great reviews that may push consumers looking for a serious smartphone with a physical keyboard to consider it.

A few questions for BlackBerry games guru Anders Jeppsson.

At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week, most mobile devs said they would focus on iOS and/or Android (usually both), and play the “wait and see” game with everyone else. But in sync with its surprisingly good fourth-quarter earnings, BlackBerry is pitching the idea that bringing games into its new OS is a no-brainer.

“I’ve been evangelizing that BlackBerry is not a business device,” global gaming head Anders Jeppsson said. “It used to be, maybe, many years ago. But over 80 percent of our users are active consumers today, and they’re very, very social.”

In order to get to those users, though, developers must first be persuaded that porting games over to BlackBerry is simple and cheap. Naturally, Jeppsson said it is, thanks in part to the company’s open-source efforts on Github and the cross-platform social gaming tools provided by BlackBerry-owned Scoreloop.

Microsoft is also touting how easy it is for mobile developers to transition into its ecosystem, but — this is both a positive and a negative for Redmond — the discoverability gap versus BlackBerry 10 is huge. Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 are the newest members of a big family, including the proven powerhouse Xbox 360 and its accompanying Xbox Live Marketplace, not to mention Windows 8’s backward compatibility with innumerable PC games. Meanwhile, BlackBerry 10 is a nascent OS currently available on just one device, the Z10.

Efforts to bridge that device gap include some monetary incentives for BB10 developers, like the (now ended) “10K Commitment” that promised early-adopter devs up to $9,000 in free money if they couldn’t reach $10,000 in revenue in their first year on BB10. There’s also a first-mover advantage, Jeppsson added, because the OS is barely two months old. In other words, it’s easier for a game to break out on a non-Google and non-Apple platform because, at least for now, the pickings are slimmer.

Jeppsson said he’s been working on developer outreach since he came to Research In Motion in 2012, when RIM acquired Jeppsson’s user interface design company, The Astonishing Tribe. He claimed “many” developers are making more money with BB10 than they are on iOS.

But the devil’s in the details, and one of the biggest questions is, what proportion of BlackBerry 10 users are frequently playing games on their new Z10s? A company representative said she would try to find out last week, but did not respond to a follow-up request for numbers. (“Frequently” is important, because players who download games, open them once and never come back are near worthless for the free-to-play mobile developers that dominate the charts on other operating systems.)

Lack of specific numbers isn’t stopping Jeppsson from some good old-fashioned competition bashing when it comes to attracting developers from outside BlackBerry’s ecosystem.

“I think BlackBerry users are actually users that are willing to pay for quality content,” he said. “They expect a quality experience. They’re not going to sideload stuff and pirate it like Android [users], stealing software.”

However, he added that his newest goals are less about developer outreach and more about making the case that the consumer’s gaming experience is better on his side of the fence.

His hope is that, as phone hardware continually improves (“This is easily an Xbox One in terms of what it can do,” he said, holding up a Z10), users will be able to play the same games as consoles, so that a game started on the bus can be finished on the couch.

Again, Microsoft is preaching a similar message. But although it already has the console side of the equation worked out, its cross-platform games are more casual than the more complex hardware-constrained games Jeppsson aspires to pair with BlackBerry — or, indeed, run entirely on his phone.

“Why would you want to buy a big PC to play Counter-Strike, where you remove all the details anyway because you want 60 frames per second?” he said. “That’s how I play Counter-Strike.”

Just because BlackBerry bet its future on the next generation BlackBerry 10 operating system doesn't mean it's ready to abandon its predecessor BlackBerry 7.

Just because BlackBerry bet its future on the next generation BlackBerry 10 operating system doesn’t mean it’s ready to abandon its predecessor, BlackBerry 7. There’s still some life in the OS yet, and BlackBerry has an idea for how to put it to use. It will use it to power lower-end handsets that can be sold in emerging markets where the transition to BlackBerry 10 might take a bit more time.

With the BlackBerry Z10 launched in a number of major markets and the QWERTY-keyboarded Q10 scheduled to follow it in April, BlackBerry will soon have its two marquee BB10 smartphones in wide release. What it won’t have, though, is a slick, new, affordably priced, entry-level handset for emerging markets.

That’s where BB7 comes in. BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins says the company plans to release a new handset running that legacy OS targeted at price-sensitive consumers in those markets. “We want to give them a good BlackBerry experience,” Heins told the Canadian Press. “So this is where probably another BlackBerry 7 product in that range makes a lot of sense.”

And indeed it does. BlackBerry has a lot of low-end loyalists in India, Indonesia and other emerging markets. It would be foolish to alienate them by forging ahead with only pricey new handsets running an unfamiliar OS. Better to offer them a BB7 smartphone that can serve as a transitional device until BB10 is more firmly established and keep them in the fold. In that scenario, the low-end BB7 phone serves as a placeholder for the low-end BB10 device that will someday replace it, and BlackBerry continues to hit that price-sensitive sweet spot where it has seen so much success in emerging markets.

“We’re not excluding those markets from BlackBerry 10 because of us wanting to sell BlackBerry 7,” said Heins. “You will see both in coexistence for awhile in those markets.”

Asked Thursday if he planned to divest his BlackBerry stake, which amounts to nearly six percent of the company’s outstanding shares, Lazaridis said he’s going to hold on to them for the time being. “I’m really proud of what we built together at RIM, and I believe I’m leaving it in good hands, and remain one of its largest shareholders,” he told Reuters.

Lazaridis’s decision to hold on to his BlackBerry shares is the bi-polar opposite of the one made by his colleague and former co-CEO Jim Balsillie.

Balsillie, who was also once one of BlackBerry’s largest individual shareholders, dumped his entire stake in the company a few months ago in a move that was viewed by some as a vote of no confidence in its comeback plan.

Down three million subs in a single quarter is a nasty decline indeed.

Financially, BlackBerry is back in the black, but when it comes to subscribers, the company is still bleeding red.

As encouraging as the smartphone maker’s surprise fourth-quarter profit might be, it’s clear the company faces some still-formidable challenges — particularly in shoring up its eroding subscriber base.

BlackBerry lost another three million subscribers in its latest quarter, with its customer base falling to 76 million subscribers. Until the third quarter, BlackBerry had posted subscriber increases fairly consistently. So the fact that it just posted a second consecutive decline — and one that was larger than expected — is cause for concern indeed.

Returning BlackBerry to its former glory is already a daunting task; pulling that off while subscriber numbers are declining only makes it more so. Obviously, BlackBerry subscribers are the most likely buyers of the company’s new BlackBerry 10 handsets, so an accelerating decline in their membership is troubling.

“The subscriber decline is actually slightly worse than it seems since it includes BlackBerry 10 subs that do not generate service revenue,” Raymond James analyst Tavis McCourt told AllThingsD. “BlackBerry is losing subscribers at a more rapid rate in emerging markets, which up until a year ago was still a source of rapid growth. That’s concerning as well.”

Morgan Stanley analyst Ehud Gelblum took a more pragmatic view of the decline, suggesting it was inevitable and, perhaps, not quite so worrisome.

“We’ve all known that sub number was going to start coming down,” Gelblum said. “The positive part that we only know now is that the subs they’re losing are mostly low-end prepaid subs who weren’t contributing much to the service revenue line and probably weren’t likely candidates to buy a Z10 in the first place.”

Appearing on CNBC on Thursday, BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins downplayed recent declines in subscriber numbers, saying that services revenue per subscriber is the more important metric and the one that the company is striving to increase.

“The decline in the subscriber numbers is really associated [with] the former BlackBerry OS system, so we expect this to gradually continue with [a] single digit [drop], probably, in the next quarter,” Heins said. “What we’re really working on, and what we’re looking toward, is new services based on BlackBerry 10, and then we will be looking at the monetary value of those services, rather than pure subscriber numbers.”

In other words, this is all part of BlackBerry’s transition to its new platform.

A fair point, I suppose, though it would certainly be more reassuring if the number of departures weren’t quite so large. Down three million subs in a single quarter is sharp erosion and doesn’t bode well for a company that’s struggling to reverse its market-share loss. That’s a number that is very clearly going in the wrong direction, and BlackBerry really needs to execute in the next quarter to stanch the bleeding.

As part of its fourth-quarter earnings announcement early this morning, the company said that co-founder and former CEO Mike Lazaridis will retire as vice chairman and director on May 1.

“[BlackBerry CEO] Thorsten [Heins] and his team did an excellent job in completing BlackBerry 10,” Lazaridis said in a statement. “We have a great deal of which to be proud. I believe I am leaving the company in good hands. I remain a huge fan of BlackBerry and, of course, wish the company and its people well.”

A smartphone pioneer who established BlackBerry in 1984 as Research In Motion, Lazaridis now plans to focus his attention on Quantum Valley Investment, a fund targeting commercial applications in quantum information science.

“Mike revolutionized the mobile communications industry and is widely recognized as one of Canada’s greatest innovators,” BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said of Lazaridis during a Thursday earnings call. “He’s played a pivotal role in the last 15 months with the launch of BlackBerry 10. I deeply respect his desire to devote his full-time efforts to his new venture.”

Lazaridis was an occasional guest at our D conferences. Below, video of his sessions at D7 and D:Dive Into Mobile:

Adjusted earnings hit 22 cents a share, well ahead of the loss of 29 cents a share analysts were expecting. Revenue: $2.7 billion.

BlackBerry’s fourth quarter was the first round of a fight the company can’t afford to lose. And as brutal as the battle might be, the struggling smartphone pioneer appears to be holding its own.

Posting Q4 financials before the bell on Thursday, BlackBerry reported earnings of 22 cents per share on revenue of $2.7 billion. The first number surpassed Wall Street estimates, the second did not. Analysts had expected BlackBerry to post a loss of 29 cents per share on revenue of $2.8 billion, according to consensus estimates from Thomson Reuters.

This is the second quarter in a row that BlackBerry has posted a profit after a string of dismal losses.

BlackBerry said it shipped six million smartphones during the quarter, including about one million BlackBerry 10 devices. So overall shipments were a bit lower than the 6.5 million analysts had been expecting, but the one million BB10 handsets were right on target. Less encouraging was the news that BlackBerry lost three million subscribers over the quarter. It began the quarter with 79 million and ended it with 76 million.

The company sold just 370,000 PlayBook tablets during the quarter. Clearly, amateur hour is not yet over.

BlackBerry ended the quarter with cash and equivalents of $2.9 billion. That was unchanged from the previous quarter. Good news, as the company plans to spend several hundreds of millions of dollars marketing its new BlackBerry 10 devices.

BlackBerry shares are up about 8 percent in pre-market trading.

As part of its earnings announcement, BlackBerry said that company co-founder Mike Lazaridis is retiring as director and vice chair of the board on May 1. “With the launch of BlackBerry 10, I believe I have fulfilled my commitment to the Board,” Lazaridis said. “Thorsten and his team did an excellent job in completing BlackBerry 10. We have a great deal of which to be proud. I believe I am leaving the company in good hands. I remain a huge fan of BlackBerry and, of course, wish the company and its people well.”

The Canadian phone maker has an emulation engine designed as a half-measure for companies not yet committed to writing a native BB10 app.

One of BlackBerry’s key goals is getting developers to write apps designed to take advantage of its all-new operating system.

But, knowing that not all developers are ready to bet on a native app, the company has offered some shortcuts designed to get programs running on devices like its Z10, which went on sale this week at AT&T.

One of those is an emulation engine that allows Android apps to run. Roughly 20 percent of the 100,000 BlackBerry 10 apps fall into this category, according to Martyn Mallick, BlackBerry’s vice president for global alliances and business development.

“We give them a very nice on-ramp to get onto the platform,” Mallick said in an interview Tuesday. “Our users deserve to have great content. If that is the fastest way we can get some of that content, that’s great.”

Some of those developers whose initial plans were to simply port their Android app are now committing to a native app based on the strong early sales of BlackBerry 10 devices in other countries.

Still other developers, Mallick said, are sticking with their Android apps but adapting them to take advantage of BlackBerry 10-specific features, such as the BlackBerry Hub.

Mallick noted that Amazon added BlackBerry-specific features when it brought over the Android version of its Kindle app, while eBay is adding support for push notifications to the Android app it brought to BlackBerry 10.

Longer term, of course, Mallick wants companies to build native BlackBerry 10 applications.

Some big-name developers haven’t announced BlackBerry 10 apps at all, including Netflix and Instagram.

“There are still some partners that are not in a position where their schedules line up with our schedules,” Mallick said. “There are some partners where their priorities are elsewhere, not even necessarily in mobile.”

BlackBerry is trying a number of tactics to seduce app makers. The company has a $10,000 guarantee aimed at showing developers they can make money on BlackBerry.

The company has also promised that its first crop of devices (there are six models due out in the next 12 months) will all use one of two screen sizes, in an effort to prevent fragmentation.

“Overall we’re excited by what we are seeing in the marketplace,” Mallick said. “We have a high level of confidence we will continue to see more of the application partners come on board.”

As for the U.S. launch, Mallick said he isn’t putting too much stock in reports that the Z10 is getting a lukewarm response at AT&T. Wait until the phone launches at T-Mobile and Verizon, he said.

“Take a look over the next couple of weeks,” he said. “I expect we will see a stronger response.”

Just in time for March Madness, InfoMotion is launching a Kickstarter campaign for a high-tech basketball. Get ready to shell out.

It’s called “madness” for a reason — the college basketball frenzy in March is enough to convince many that if they only had a better handle on the ball, or a higher arc, they, too could have made it to the Final Four.

Now there’s a basketball for that.

An Ohio-based company called InfoMotion has created a high-tech, Bluetooth-equipped basketball that senses the player’s motions with the ball and, after analyzing the data, shares it wirelessly to a compatible iOS or Android smartphone app.

InfoMotion has kicked off a Kickstarter campaign today to raise money for the production of the ball.

Mike Crowley, InfoMotion’s CEO, says the app doesn’t just spit out data; it’s supposed to offer advanced diagnostics to help players improve their games. “Five years ago, when we started the company, we knew consumers needed data. But the next evolution, beyond just activity tracking, is, how do I get better?”

The sensors in the ball can measure the direction of the ball’s spin and how quick your release is after catching the ball. In terms of ball handling, the Bluetooth ball knows the efficiency of your left hand versus your right hand, and how hard you dribble with each — in a sense, how confident you are with the ball.

Using this data, the app will recognize patterns and offer suggestions to shoot with a higher arc, or use your legs, or change the trajectory of the ball.

While the ball can sense when it has hit backboard, rim or net, InfoMotion’s “hit-or-miss” technology is still in development, so right now the app won’t tell you how many shots you’ve made — only how many you’ve taken.

The app also has a multiplayer mode, in which you and up to three other friends can take turns shooting 10 shots at a time and compete. InfoMotion’s goal is to create a kind of virtual playground, in which ballplayers around the world can compare scores within the app.

The sensor-laden basketball is made of indoor/outdoor synthetic leather, courtesy of Spalding. Despite the fact that the ball comes packed with an eight-hour battery, Crowley says it meets regulation weight and size. It’s Qi-compatible, so it can be charged wirelessly, and comes with a charging sleeve.

If you can already feel the synthetic leather pimples under your fingertips, here’s the part where you might get a little, um, deflated: InfoMotion doesn’t expect the ball to ship until the third quarter of this year. And it will retail for a whopping $295. That almost makes these basketball sneakers look reasonable (not really).

To be fair, this new offering is much cheaper than InfoMotion’s first high-tech basketball, which launched in 2011 and ranged in price from $2,500 to $5,000. That ball was aimed mainly at high-level coaches and players.

But $295 is still a lot for a synthetic-leather basketball. Here’s a little free advice, kids: High-tech or not, just get out there and shoot — a lot!

BlackBerry's new Z10 smartphone is a record-setter -- in two of the first markets it in which it debuted, anyway.

BlackBerry’s new Z10 smartphone is a record-setter — in two of the first markets in which it debuted, anyway.

BlackBerry said on Wednesday that the Canadian and U.K. launches of the Z10 have been the best of any of its handsets debuts in those regions ever.

“In Canada, yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone. In fact, it was more than 50 percent better than any other launch day in our history in Canada,” BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said in a statement sent to AllThingsD. “In the U.K., we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone.”

The company declined to provide any hard sales numbers. And while we tried to dig up some old metrics from which to extrapolate, we have so far been unsuccessful. If those numbers exist somewhere outside of Waterloo, we haven’t been able to find them. In other words, early Z10 sales are much better than some numbers BlackBerry isn’t quantifying.

Still, BlackBerry’s announcement does lend further credence to preliminary reports of strong demand for the Z10 in the U.K. As we noted earlier this week, retail channel checks conducted following the device’s launch last week returned encouraging results, with some vendors reporting sell-outs, lines and other signs of strong demand.

Caveat: As I’ve noted before, strong early demand doesn’t always translate into solid sustainable demand. And it’s important to remember that Canada and the U.K. are two of BlackBerry’s largest markets, with a very loyal user base. Heavy buzz there doesn’t guarantee heavy buzz everywhere.

A frame from the BlackBerry Z10 Superbowl ad.

We are still in the very early days of Research In Motion’s attempted rebirth, so it’s impossible to make even a reasonably accurate call on its prospects. But some early sales data suggests that the company, which is rebranding itself BlackBerry after its best-known smartphone, may be seeing strong demand for the Z10, the first of two BlackBerry 10 handsets it will roll out in the coming months.

According to channel checks conducted by Jefferies & Co., preorders in the United Arab Emirates and Canada have so far been “solid.” More encouraging, though, are early reports from the U.K., where Z10 sales are evidently off to a good start. Jefferies analyst Peter Misek reports lines outside a number of U.K. retailers selling the device, and says that sell-outs of the white Z10 have been widespread. The black Z10 is easier to come by, but Misek says that with that device, too, stocks are limited.

“We believe Carphone Warehouse is seeing widespread sell-outs, while O2, Vodafone, Orange and EE are seeing robust demand,” Misek explained. “We estimate sell-in to be at least several hundred thousand units.”

If that estimate is correct, this is encouraging news indeed for the company. While the U.K. is among the biggest BlackBerry markets in the world — if not the biggest — it’s far, far smaller than the U.S., a crucial market for BlackBerry.

If Z10 sees demand similar to that of the U.K. when it debuts in the U.S. in March, BlackBerry may have a chance to regain some of the traction it has spent the past five years losing. “To put [these early Z10 numbers] in perspective, the iPhone had first weekend sales of 5 million plus in the U.S.,” Misek said. “The U.S. is five times larger so continued strong sales could bode very well for Blackberry.”

Reach for comment on early U.K. demand for the Z10, BlackBerry spokeswoman Amy Jones said the company was encouraged by early demand.

“We have supplied initial shipments to our partners and carriers in Canada, the UK and the UAE (which is due to launch February 10th),” Jones said. “We are very pleased that our partners are able to start selling the BlackBerry Z10 so quickly following our global launch event. We are extremely encouraged that the initial demand for the BlackBerry Z10 has been high.”

New name. New OS. Same sinking share price.

Research In Motion has a new name, a new operating system and a pair of new handsets, but it’s still got the same old sinking stock price.

On Thursday, shares of the smartphone pioneer continued the downward slide they began the day before, during the unveiling of its long-awaited BlackBerry 10 OS and handsets. BlackBerry shares opened down 10 percent and, at $13.21, they’re down nearly 4 percent as I write this.

Why the pessimism after what seemed to be a fairly successful launch event? The estimated arrival dates of the first of BlackBerry’s BB10 phones. Though the touchscreen Z10 debuted in the U.K. and will ship in Canada and the United Arab Emirates next week, it won’t hit the U.S. market until March. And the Q10, a BB10 handset with a physical keyboard, won’t be available anywhere until April. Later-than-expected ship dates imply smaller-than-hoped-for unit shipments, and the Street clearly finds that disappointing.

Beyond that, there are concerns about the BlackBerry ecosystem and addressable market that I mentioned earlier this morning. That said, BB10 is a vast improvement over its predecessor, and has certainly closed the gap with Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android. It’s not hard to imagine it appealing to BlackBerry diehards looking for a next-generation device. But the legacy user base is an easy mark. Those BlackBerry users who have defected to iOS and Android over the last few years will be a far harder sell.

"Today is not the finish line. It's the starting line." You got that right ...

Are a new operating system, a pair of handsets on which to run it, and a name change enough to restore Research In Motion, now “BlackBerry,” to its former glory? That’s an open question after the Wednesday event at which the company attempted to recast itself as a player in the market it helped pioneer.

Certainly Wall Street wasn’t impressed. BlackBerry’s shares, which had more than doubled over the past three months after a precipitous decline, tanked following the event. Shares closed down 12 percent at $13.78. Profit-taking? Surely there was some of that. But investor anxiety over the daunting task ahead of the company was obviously at work here as well. As BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins himself said, “Today is not the finish line. It’s the starting line.”

And the race ahead is one in which BlackBerry has already been lapped by Google and Apple, the two smartphone upstarts that unseated it. Which is not to say it’s a race in which the company is ill-equipped to compete. BlackBerry’s new Z10 handset appears to be garnering generally positive reviews. BlackBerry 10 seems to have finally closed the gap with more mobile operating systems. And while BlackBerry currently holds just 4.6 percent of the smartphone market — a tenth of what it once claimed — it has a user base of about 79 million people with a predisposition for its handsets. And there is almost certainly pent-up demand for its new hardware among diehard BlackBerry users.

But is there untapped demand beyond that?

Well, that’s the big question, isn’t it? With its new BlackBerry 10 OS and handsets, does BlackBerry have what it needs to convert iPhone and Android users who no longer consider its offerings an option? Because once the BlackBerry faithful upgrade their devices, there’s a real risk that sales could slow. BB10’s task is really threefold: It needs to satisfy hardcore BlackBerry users, stem defections to rival platforms and encourage defections to its own platform, and convince developers to build apps for it. That’s not going to be easy when it’s not at all clear that the world wants or needs another mobile operating system.

“BlackBerry 10 is competent,” Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair told AllThingsD. “But it’s three years too late to catch anyone’s attention.”

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu took a similar view, noting some recent carnage in the smartphone market. “So far, customers and developers have been lukewarm to adopt new platforms, including Windows 8 and webOS, despite strong reviews and carrier interest,” Wu said. “To us, it’s not just the number of apps, but the quality of apps and whether developers are making money and customers are using them.”

Precisely.

Debuting BB10 with 70,000 apps is impressive, and BlackBerry deserves a lot of credit for pulling that off. But a critical mass of apps is hardly a self-sustaining app ecosystem. A healthy app ecosystem is a transactional one. That’s why you often hear Apple boast about the billions of dollars it has paid out to developers. Sure, the iTunes App Store is approaching 800,000 apps. But that’s an empty number. The important thing is that people are buying so many of them that, as of last October, Apple had paid developers $6.5 billion.

BlackBerry is a long way from reaching either of those heady numbers. But 70,000 apps is a start. And BB10 and the Z10 handset would seem to have at least given the company table stakes in the smartphone high-rollers room. Now, can BlackBerry parlay those stakes into a true comeback? (And if not, can it parlay them into an acquisition? BB10 potentially makes it a more attractive target.)

Who knows? Perhaps the consumer smartphone market is ready for something new.

We’ll see.

A software update should bring BB10 to existing PlayBooks, but the company is still figuring out its next steps in the tablet business.

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said Wednesday that the company is working on a software update that will bring the new BlackBerry 10 software to existing PlayBook tablets.

However, when it comes to future tablets, Heins said the company is trying to figure out a way to combine software and services, since selling tablet hardware alone is a tough way to make money at the moment.

“We are looking for specific value-added services on top of the tablet,” Heins said.

His comments came in a question-and-answer session following the announcement of the first two BlackBerry 10 phones in New York.

He also addressed a few other questions, including the expected April arrival of the second BlackBerry 10 phone, the physical-keyboard-packing Q10.

As for battery life, the Z10 should get users through the day, Heins said, adding that the battery is removable for power users who want to carry a second.

Asked how he would measure success, Heins said that the company had specific sales targets, but he didn’t share those. Instead, he handed it off to marketing chief Frank Boulben, who said the goal is for early users to be very happy, and that, beyond that, the company hopes to quickly become the No. 3 player in smartphones.

All four major U.S. carriers will carry new BlackBerry devices. But not until March, and some may be later than that.

It has long been known that Research In Motion would show the first BlackBerry 10 devices today. One key question is just when you will be able to buy one.

And the news was not exactly promising, especially for those in the United States. First came word via The Wall Street Journal that it would be March before the first customers in the U.S. could buy a device.

Onstage, things actually got a bit worse, as Heins said “most” of the big four U.S. carriers would have it by March. Verizon announced that it would carry both the touchscreen Z10 and keyboard-equipped Q10 handhelds, but did not give availability.

The Z10 will cost $199.99 with a two-year contract. Pricing for the Q10 was not revealed at this time. Both devices will support the carrier’s 4G LTE network, and will come in black or white. The white Z10 will be an exclusive to Verizon Wireless.

AT&T is also set to offer both smartphones, but no word on pricing or release date. T-Mobile has a landing page up for the Z10, and it’s worth noting that it looks like the handset will support its upcoming 4G LTE network.

Sprint also said it would carry a device “later this year,” but it is carrying the keyboard-equipped Q10, which is expected to arrive later than the Z10.

Heins said the company’s main priority is getting the Z10 out the door. As for the keyboard-equipped Q10, “I think we will expect to see it in the April timeframe,” he said.

The device is going on sale in Canada and some other countries as soon as next week.

Speaking with reporters, Heins said Wednesday that a longer testing period at U.S. carriers is why it will take longer to hit the market here.

“The reason is that the testing process in the U.S. with those carrier partners is a rather lengthy one,” Heins said.

The BlackBerry Z10 features a 4.2-inch touchscreen displaying 356 pixels per inch. It has an eight-megapixel camera on back, and only comes in a 16 gigabyte model, though there is a memory-expansion slot. Meanwhile, the BlackBerry Q10 features a full physical keyboard with a 3.1-inch, 720 by 720-pixel touch display.

In his review of the BlackBerry Z10, AllThingsD’s Walt Mossberg found the hardware decent and the user interface easy to use, but said that it will need to continue to add more apps if it’s going to succeed.

The BlackBerry 10 event is still taking place. Click here for our live coverage.

BlackBerry 10 has finally been unveiled to the world. Now, what about apps?

The big day for BlackBerry has finally arrived. The world now knows what the company’s newest entrant in the smartphone race looks like.

But what about apps?

For starters, a few key apps were already known, like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Foursquare. Several more were announced or shown onstage during the event: Skype, Amazon Kindle, WhatsApp, Angry Birds, Where’s My Water?, Where’s My Perry?, Box, MLB.com, Rdio, Songza, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg, to name a few.

RIM — pardon me, BlackBerry — also showed how video chatting and screen sharing are now integrated into the popular BlackBerry Messenger application, as well as built-in photo-editing and music-video-making apps.

But right now it’s still unclear when apps like Instagram, Spotify and Pandora, or streaming video apps like Netflix, Hulu and YouTube, will make their way onto BlackBerry 10. And notably absent was Google Maps.

Update: A spokesman for BlackBerry says the company is “in talks” with Instagram and Netflix, but could not confirm when those apps will make their way into the store. Also, there is not a dedicated YouTube app, as we suspected, but he was quick to point out that YouTube can be watched on a mobile browser.

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has been quoted as saying that the company’s app store, still called BlackBerry World, would have more than 70,000 apps at the time of this launch. BlackBerry’s Martyn Mallick reaffirmed during today’s event that this is the case.

Just a couple weeks ago, RIM hosted a “Portathon,” enticing developers to create submissions for 15,000 new apps in a single weekend, as AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski reported.

To hear BlackBerry talk about it, developers are excited to take advantage of some of the new features that BlackBerry 10 offers, like “BlackBerry Flow,” or real-time multitasking between apps.

But keep in mind the competition. Apple currently has 800,000 apps in its App Store, with 300,000 optimized for iPad. The total number of apps in Google’s app store, Google Play, isn’t totally clear, but, by some estimates, Google is nipping at Apple’s heels.

Let’s not even get into apps for the Microsoft Windows Phone operating system. Okay, to be fair, let’s talk about it: Microsoft said in a recent blog post that it had “more than doubled” its Windows Phone app library with the addition of 75,000 new apps in 2012. Which means even Windows Phone boasts more apps than BlackBerry 10.

Of course, some will argue that it really doesn’t matter how many apps are available — it’s whether the important ones are there. Many smartphone owners download a bunch of apps, only to have them sit there taking up space on their phones.

Are BlackBerry’s apps enough to sway current iPhone and Android users?

The BlackBerry 10 event is still taking place. Click here for our live coverage.

There is a new smartphone coming to market, running on a new operating system. It’s an all-touch device — with no physical navigation controls and no physical keyboard — and serves as a platform for third-party apps. It’s meant to compete in a world defined by Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android phones. It’s a BlackBerry, reinvented from the ground up.

This model, called the Z10, and its operating system, called BB10, are bet-the-company moves by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. RIM has seen its once-dominant position in the market shrivel away, especially in the U.S., since the iPhone appeared in 2007. It has tried a couple of times to drop its famous physical keyboards for touchscreens, but those projects failed, partly because the old BlackBerry operating system was primarily designed to handle corporate email and was a poor platform for app developers.

The BlackBerry Z10 comes in black and white and looks very different from past BlackBerrys.

Now, RIM is hoping that BB10 can change all that, so much so it’s changing its name to BlackBerry. The new OS, which is the most important part of the product, isn’t an evolution of the old BlackBerry platform. It is a clean break. Its user interface is so different that it will seem foreign to longtime BlackBerry users. And the first phone to use it, the Z10, looks much more like its rivals than like traditional BlackBerrys.

I’ve been testing the Z10 for about a week and decided to approach it as a new entry from a new company, because it is so different from past BlackBerrys. Overall, it worked fine in my tests, but I found it a work in progress. I liked some things a lot, including the way BlackBerry has designed its new virtual keyboard and camera, and the way it gathers all your messages into a single Hub. But it will launch with just a fraction of the apps available from its competitors, and is missing some very popular titles. It also lacks its own cloud-based ecosystem for storing and sharing files, like Apple’s iCloud or Google Drive. And there are other missing or lagging features.

Fervent BlackBerry fans might shun the Z10 for its lack of a physical keyboard, while fervent iPhone and Android fans might shun it for its small selection of apps and lack of native cloud services.

BlackBerry is formally announcing the Z10 and BB10 this week and it will go on sale in some countries almost immediately. In the U.S., all four major carriers are expected to sell the phone, for $199, according to BlackBerry, but the company estimates it won’t be available until March.

A second BB10 phone, the Q10, due in April, may be an easier transition for BlackBerry addicts, since it will have a physical keyboard. But BlackBerry sees typing on glass as its future and will be emphasizing the touch model.

Hardware

The Z10 is basically a chunky plastic slab, midway in size and weight between the tall, slim iPhone 5 and the bigger, wider crop of new Android models. I found it felt good in the hand. Its high-resolution 4.2-inch screen is a bit bigger than the iPhone’s 4-inch display, though much smaller than many newer Android screens, which are creeping toward 5 inches. The rear camera is the same eight megapixels as on the iPhone and Android models like Google’s flagship Nexus 4. It comes in black and white, and has only one memory configuration — 16 gigabytes (the base on the iPhone) — but the memory can be expanded by up to 32 more gigabytes using a removable card. Unlike many phones today, it has a removable battery.

User Interface

The Z10’s virtual keyboard is fast and easy to use, partly because of its predictive typing.

You unlock the phone by swiping up from the bottom border. The phone displays the last screen you were on. A similar swipe from any screen will take you to the home position, which displays minimized versions of up to eight apps currently running, with each displayed as a large rectangle showing some information from the app, such as weather or appointments. These are called Active Frames. From there, swiping to the left takes you through screens of app icons, similar to those on Apple and Android phones. Swiping from the bottom minimizes any open app into an Active Frame. I found these gestures easy to use and remember.

BlackBerry Hub

Although it isn’t technically the home screen, BlackBerry expects most users to spend most of their time in the device’s unified inbox, called BlackBerry Hub. To reach the Hub, you swipe right from the display of running apps, or, if you’re on any other screen, you swipe up and to the right in a curved gesture from the bottom border — that one takes a little practice.

The Hub contains emails from all the accounts you’ve set up on the phone, as well as text messages, messages from the company’s BlackBerry Messenger service, and even updates from Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.

Unlike on older BlackBerrys, there aren’t separate icons for various email accounts; they are visible only via the Hub. But you can swipe right from the Hub to see each account and view only its contents. If you swipe down while in the Hub, you see upcoming calendar events.

Keyboard

The Z10 keyboard is the best and fastest out-of-the-box virtual keyboard I’ve used. Master BlackBerry thumb typists might not find it as fast as the traditional physical keyboard, but, for a one-finger typist like me, it was faster and more accurate than either the native keyboards on the iPhone or Android. This is partly because it features predictive typing. It displays words that are likely to come next right above the rows of letters, and lets you flick these words upward into the text you’re composing. It learns what mistakes you typically make in hitting letters, and adjusts. And it learns words and abbreviations you frequently use, even proper names.

Apps

BlackBerry claims it will have 70,000 apps at launch. Others are promised shortly afterward. That sounds like a lot, but Apple is approaching 800,000 and Android has over 700,000. BlackBerry’s app store, called BlackBerry World, includes—or will soon include — some common and standard apps, such as Facebook, Twitter, Angry Birds, The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and Major League Baseball. But at launch, it will be missing Instagram, Pandora, Spotify, NPR, Google Maps and Netflix, among many others.

Work and Personal

If you use a corporate network controlled by an IT department, and want to keep your work and personal apps separate, BB10 has a simple way to do it. You just swipe down and press a button called “Personal” or “Work” and the apps, and even the background, change. However, email and calendar entries are still intermingled.

Camera, Voice and Battery Life

The camera has a cool feature called TimeShift that allows you to adjust individual faces in a group shot to get different views of them — say, smiling instead of frowning — by capturing additional images just before or after the snapshot. Voice calls were excellent. I didn’t do a formal battery test, but in my moderate to heavy use of the phone, I found it didn’t last as long on a charge as the iPhone 5, and began to get pretty low by late afternoon. It would last some people an entire day, but not everyone.

Browser

I found the browser adequate, but noticeably slower than the standard Apple and Android browser, even on a fast Wi-Fi network. However, unlike on many phones today, the browser supports Adobe Flash on some pages, if you manually enable it.

Data Speeds

The Z10 is capable of using LTE networks, the most consistently speedy available. But on my test unit, which was running on AT&T, I could never achieve download speeds of more than a paltry two megabits per second, even though the phone said it was on LTE, which typically sports download speeds of 15, 20 or even more Mbps. BlackBerry had no explanation for this anomaly.

Video Chats

In BB10, BlackBerry has added a video-chat feature similar to Apple’s FaceTime. In my tests, this worked well.

Cloud

Unlike Android or Apple devices, BB10 has no built-in cloud system for syncing or storing photos or other data. BlackBerry says that the third-party cloud app Box, which is mainly used by corporate customers, can do some automatic syncing, but it says it plans to work on its own system over time.

Other Downsides

There is no native ability to print from the Z10. And in some cases, I found that common controls required too many steps. For instance, to quickly get to the top or bottom of a long list of messages in the Hub — something the old BlackBerry did with ease — you have to go to the menu. BlackBerry says it is working on making that quicker.

Bottom Line

The Z10 and BB10 represent a radical reinvention of the BlackBerry. The hardware is decent and the user interface is logical and generally easy to use. I believe it has a chance of getting BlackBerry back into the game, if the company can attract a lot more apps.

To say it's a big day for RIM would be an understatement. AllThingsD has live coverage of the New York launch event.

It’s hard to overstate how important the launch of BlackBerry 10 is for Research In Motion.

After months of delays, the company really needs a strong reception for the new phones and operating system, due to be shown off later on Wednesday at an event in New York.

RIM is pulling out all the stops, starting with the event here, and continuing with a marketing blitz that includes the company’s first-ever Super Bowl ad.

There are a bunch of things to watch for beyond the device and software itself. First off will be which apps and services RIM has managed to get to support the products at launch. They’ve already announced some support, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare, the NHL and Major League Baseball.

But these days the list of apps and services that consumers expect to use on their phone has grown long and wide. Also key will be how much love the company is getting from the cellular carriers. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile have all said they will carry new BlackBerry devices, but just when and how much marketing they will get is another question.

AllThingsD will have live coverage and analysis as things get going around 7 am PT.

9:31 am: It’s still half hour to go, but we are in and seated.

For those wondering just where things are taking place, the event is at a pier on the lower eastern tip of Manhattan.

9:37 am: While we have a second, I’d like to introduce the band. We have Lauren Goode on camera and color commentary. I’m Ina, and I’ll be on the keyboard.

9:45 am: While we are waiting, it’s a good time to check out this classic video from RIM’s BlackBerry Jam developer event last year. Yes, those are actually RIM employees covering REO Speedwagon. And no, very little rhymes with SDK.

9:46 am: Lauren here. A quick survey of the press area shows a lot of … iPhones being used. But I did spot at least one BlackBerry PlayBook in the wild.

10:00 am: Things should kick off momentarily, eh.

10:03 am: Looks like they will have Angry Birds for BB10.

10:05 am: A RIM guy is “reporting live” from the middle of the press section, showing video and pictures from some of the simultaneous launch events around the globe, including Toronto, Paris, London and Dubai.

10:07 am: Roll video of people excited about BlackBerry 10. Some carriers, customers, etc.

10:10 am: Now the RIM emcee is interviewing RIM developer relations executive Alec Saunders.

10:12 am: Next canned video is of BlackBerry fans sticking “Honk if you like BlackBerry 10” stickers on cars.

10:14 am: Best part so far. The guy from BlackBerry fan site CrackBerry has been growing his hair, waiting for BlackBerry 10 (it’s quite long). They just cut off his ponytail to cheers.

“The wait is over,” says the emcee, as CEO Thorsten Heins takes the stage.

10:16 am: “We have definitely been on a journey of transformation,” Heins says. “Now, finally, here we are.”

10:18 am: “Today is actually not the finish line,” Heins says. “It is the starting line.”

10:19 am: He’s talking about the BlackBerry 10 customer, using the same kinds of terms he has used in the past, talking about fast-moving, hyperconnected people.

10:22 am: Heins says the company had a big decision to make two years ago, in choosing whether to license someone else’s operating system or continue building its own software.

“We made the tough call to go it alone,” Heins says.

10:24 am: Heins gives a shout out to former CEO Mike Lazaridis, who is in the audience.

“Thank you for guiding us into the future,” Heins says.

Heins says the company is dropping the RIM brand and going with the name BlackBerry for the company and its products.

“From today on, we are BlackBerry everywhere in the world,” Heins says.

10:27 am: And there they are, the first two devices. The touchscreen BlackBerry Z10 (or “Zed 10,” as Heins calls it), and the keyboard-equipped Q10.

The Z10 has a 4.2-inch display with roughly 350 pixels per inch.

“There’s a lot of physical-keyboard lovers out there,” Heins says. “We heard you loud and clear.”

Heins promises that both touchscreen and physical-keyboard BB10 devices will offer the best typing experience on a smartphone.

10:32 am: Head of software Vivek Bhardwaj comes out to demo the new devices, showing off the BlackBerry Hub — the central place that is a swipe away, and offers access to email and other messaging.

“It’s about moving between applications,” he says. “It’s not about home buttons.”

Another feature, also previously demoed, lets users peek into the Hub while doing other things, such as watching a video.

The Hub can handle BBM messages, Facebook friend requests, LinkedIn invitations and email, among other communications.

“You’ll notice everything is easy to manage,” Bhardwaj says.

One can not only read messages from within the Hub, but act on them. Within the Hub, one can accept a friend request, post a Tweet or do other actions, without opening a separate app.

10:37 am: Also available is your next meeting, both the time and information, as well as details on the people who are attending. The contact details include the most recent text messages and call data, as well as contact information and their recent status updates.

Demo of the software keyboard, which does some really good autocorrect. (Are you listening, Apple?)

One can even move between different languages in one message. Que bueno!

10:42 am: In addition to changing its name from RIM to BlackBerry, the company is switching its Nasdaq ticker symbol to BBRY.

10:43 am: Next demo is BlackBerry Balance, the feature that lets one have separate areas for work and personal stuff. They are making the case that this won’t interrupt the flow, and will provide a unified interface — a tricky feat for such container-based systems.

Heins says he hoped that some of those people carrying two devices will merge and carry one BlackBerry 10 phone.

10:45 am: Most (all?) of the software features shown so far have been part of previous BlackBerry 10 discussions.

Ruh-roh! The Wall Street Journal is reporting that the first BB10 devices won’t hit the U.S. market until mid-March.

10:47 am: Meanwhile, RIM is showing BBM video, which allows both video chat and screen sharing from within the BlackBerry social messaging app.

10:49 am: Another new feature — BlackBerry Remember, which lets you flag emails, Web pages or other content, and assign a due date. Notes, photos or voice memos can be appended to a reminder.

10:51 am: Verizon Wireless says it will carry both new BlackBerry 10 devices, with the Z10 selling for $199. Of note: No availability date was listed.

10:53 am: Back onstage, RIM — I mean, BlackBerry — is demoing the camera app, which has some built-in editing features.

10:55 am: And, here’s Walt Mossberg’s review of the new products.

10:57 am: Demo of features seems to be wrapping up as Heins says, “This is the new BlackBerry.”

10:58 am: Critical piece, as BlackBerry starts to talk about partners.

Heins mentions that major studios will have content, as announced earlier this week. BlackBerry VP Martyn Mallick comes onstage to talk about how the company went after key applications.

Mallick says BlackBerry is launching BB10 with more apps (more than 70,000) than any first-generation smartphone.

But, of course, its key rivals aren’t in their first generation.

11:01 am: Mallick is talking about apps “committed” to BB10.

SAP, Skype, WhatsApp, Angry Birds, all on that list.

But, by using the word committed, it suggests not all will be there at launch.

11:01 am: Gaming titles include Where’s My Perry? and titles from EA and GameLoft. Entertainment options include Rdio and TuneIn (but no mention of Spotify, Netflix, Hulu, etc.)

Mallick says the company went after the global and local titles that were most popular on other platforms.

11:07 am: I know what you’re thinking: When can I get it?

In the U.S. market, big four carriers will announce preregistration today but expectation is that it won’t ship on “most” carriers till March. Sounds like one or two could be later than that.

In Canada, the Z10 will be available on Feb. 5, with pricing around $149 on a three-year contract.

11:10 am: Heins says RIM has hired singer Alicia Keys as global creative director.

And Keys appears onstage.

Heins: You were a long-term BlackBerry customer, but then you started using other phones. What happened?

Keys: I was in a long-term relationship with BlackBerry, and I started to notice some new, hotter devices at the gym. I started playing the field.

“I kind of broke up with you,” Keys says. But I missed the way you organized me. Then you called. You told me you were working out. “Now we are exclusively dating again, and I am very happy.”

Heins: “So are we.”

The end of the laptop in favor of mobile computing parallels the changes in music, Keys says. “We have a lot in common.”

Duet?

Keys says that in her role as creative director, she will work with carriers, customers, app designers, as well as folks in the entertainment and music business.

“It’s a big job,” Keys says.

Keys says she is taking her BlackBerry 10 with her on tour. “It will be with me on Sunday at the Super Bowl.”

11:21 am: The satellite feed is now cut, and Heins is speaking only to the U.S. audience.

Heins says he wants the crowd here to be among RIM’s first users. “So what that means is everyone here will take a Blackberry Zed 10 home with them today,” Heins says.

11:22 am: With that, Heins exits the stage, though he will have a Q&A with reporters shortly. (We’ll be there, of course.)
