<p>According to sources close to the situation, Flipboard co-founder and CEO Mike McCue has approached Twitter CEO Dick Costolo and co-founder Jack Dorsey about moving off the board of Twitter.</p>
<p>It is not clear when McCue &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">who became a director </a> of the San Francisco social communications company in late 2010 &#8212; will step down, but it could come soon.</p>
<p>The reason, sources said, is McCue&#8217;s growing feeling that the companies are on a product collision course, with a possible troubled or perhaps more attractive result.</p>
<p>In other words, Flipboard will either face increasing rivalry from Twitter or will end up as a possible acquisition target for it or other companies.</p>
<p>&#8220;How users consume and use Twitter is a key part of its future, and that is what Flipboard does well already,&#8221; said one person with knowledge of the situation. &#8220;There is going to be an inevitable crossroads for the two companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, Twitter has bought several companies that help users read and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111208/twitter-redesigns-to-be-simpler-and-faster/">discover</a>, such as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120119/twitter-acquires-social-summary-tool-summify/">Summify</a>.</p>
<p>The goal has been to better make sense of the massive amount of data that the service produces daily; to that end, Twitter has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120501/twitter-discovery-update/ ">pushed to improve its user interface design</a> on a number of devices. </p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120507/exclusive-flipboard-ceo-mccue-likely-to-step-down-from-twitter-board-over-potential-future-conflicts-or-closer-cooperation/flipboard-twitter/" rel="attachment wp-att-204843"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/05/Flipboard-Twitter-213x285.png" alt="" title="Flipboard-Twitter" width="213" height="285" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-204843" /></a></p>
<p>And Twitter is a big part of Flipboard&#8217;s app, which is very dependent on the tweet feed and accounts for 70 percent of its links, sources said.</p>
<p>Flipboard is also more of a &#8220;mobile first&#8221; company, which is where Twitter is also headed even more aggressively.</p>
<p>Already popular on the Apple iPad, Flipboard <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/news-reader-traffic-jam-yahoos-livestand-and-googles-propeller-set-to-launch-aiming-at-flipboard/">launched its iPhone app</a> late last year and it is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/flipboard-for-android-makes-a-cameo-at-samsungs-galaxy-s-iii-launch/">prepping a version</a> for Google Android soon.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why, in addition to being a rival, it is also an obvious acquisition target for Twitter, as well as others such as Yahoo and Microsoft. </p>
<p>In fact, Google already tried to buy it last year, before Flipboard did a massive <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110414/exclusive-flipboard-confirms-50-million-funding-at-200-million-valuation/">$50 million fundraising round that valued it at $200 million</a>. </p>
<p>Its investors include Insight Venture Partners, Comcast&#8217;s venture arm, Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Dorsey, Facebook co-founder and Asana dude Dustin Moskovitz, Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime entrepreneur McCue (Netscape, Tellme) and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll, Flipboard <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million">launched to much attention in mid 2010</a>.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from media RSS feeds and sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate personalized format.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111208/google-currents-debuts-phew/">Google has mounted a competitor, called Currents,</a> as has Yahoo with its Livestand offering, neither of which have gotten much traction. In fact, sources said, Yahoo is likely to shut Livestand down completely.</p>
<p>There have also been a spate of other similar readers, such as Pulse and Zite. </p>
<p>Spokespersons for both Flipboard and Twitter politely declined comment.</p>

Mobile ads, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120418/mobile-ads-are-growing-fast-still-pretty-small/">even more so</a>.</p>
<p>And if you combine the two? You get <a href="http://vungle.com/">Vungle</a>, a barely hatched start-up that just raised a $2 million seed round.</p>
<p>Vungle&#8217;s pitch is straightforward: They help app developers make video promo reels for their stuff, and turn them into &#8220;in-app&#8221; ads (you can see a sample below). There are a whole lot of ways to buy in-app advertising for other apps already &#8212; it&#8217;s a big chunk of the mobile ad business right now &#8212; but the Vungle guys argue that they make it easy. And that unlike iAd, AdMob, Millenial, etc., it&#8217;s all they do.</p>
<p>Fair enough. No way to really tell now, as the company is only in &#8220;alpha,&#8221; with a handful of paying customers that include Path, the buzzy next-gen social network, and <a href="http://pocketgems.com/">Pocket Games</a>, a game developer. A more open beta comes this summer.</p>
<p>At least as interesting as the pitch is the backstory, which has co-founders Zain Jeffer, 24, and Jack Smith, 23, leaving London on a whim to join the AngelPad start-up factory last fall, then finding themselves in a whirlwind round of financing. For instance, they pitched Crosslink&#8217;s David Silverman at his home on a weekend, and got a commitment a day later.</p>
<p>Multimillion dollar seed rounds would have been unheard of a couple years ago. Now they&#8217;re increasingly commonplace (here&#8217;s one for <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120425/people-search-engine-ark-raises-biggest-y-combinator-seed-round-in-memory/">$4.2 million</a>), at least for a certain class of incubator-blessed start-ups. And they&#8217;re part of the reason that you&#8217;re hearing <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120501/nope-still-no-bubble-here-says-marc-andreessen/">lots of bubble talk right now</a>.</p>
<p>For the record, the Vungle guys say they had no intention of raising so much out of the gate. But &#8220;as soon as you tell people you don&#8217;t want money, that&#8217;s when they want to give you money,&#8221; Smith says. Among those chipping in: Google Ventures, AOL Ventures, Ron Conway, Dave McClure, Charles Hudson, Maynard Webb, Scott McNealy and Tim Draper.</p>

<p>Since he was appointed mayor a year ago and elected to a full term in November, Mr. Lee has made it a priority to boost the city&#8217;s economy through the tech industry. Last year, he backed tax breaks to help San Francisco Internet companies Zynga Inc. and Twitter Inc. He visits tech companies weekly and is close to start-up financier Ron Conway.</p>

<p>Okay, okay, we get it: Morgan Stanley got the coveted left-hand lead position on Facebook&#8217;s blockbuster IPO filing. Goldman Sachs is there, too, but in the third-place, always-a-bridesmaid spo,t and is crying big salty tears about the injustice of it all.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s hard to feel badly for overpaid investment bankers, and focusing on them is kind of like endlessly discussing the lawyers who processed your mortgage, when the focus should be on the house you&#8217;re buying.</p>
<p>Does anyone except a few Richie Rich ZIP Codes in Manhattan care about this one deet of the initial public offering of the social networking giant? </p>
<p>Nope, but there is so little real news ahead of the IPO filing expected today that this is what we are chomping on this morning, as everyone awaits the big doc drop at the Securities and Exchange Commission.</p>
<p>Sources said it is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120201/go-the-fk-back-to-sleep-silicon-valley-facebook-ipo-likely-to-file-later-today-at-earliest/">likely to come this afternoon</a> rather than this morning, though. And, perish the thought, all that dotting of I&#8217;s and crossing of T&#8217;s could delay it to tomorrow, even (unlikely, but mebbe!).</p>
<p><em>Sigh.</em></p>
<p>Tidbit: Facebook was actually founded the first Wednesday in February of 2004 in an undergraduate dorm room at Harvard University, like today but eight years later. </p>

<p>Now, hopefully, we&#8217;ll get the real news about Facebook.</p>
<p>Namely, who&#8217;s getting the big dough in this much-anticipated Web 2.0 gambit? Co-founder and CEO and Hoodie Commander Mark Zuckerberg <em>fer sure</em>, but who else?</p>
<p>Plus all the juicy financials from Facebook, along with stats in usage, growth and just how much the company sticks it to its gaming serf &#8212; <em>oops</em>, partner &#8212; Zynga and others for the privilege of being on its all-powerful platform.</p>
<p>Me? I pay nada, like other Facebook users, for being able to show off pictures of my vacations and decline friendships from PR people I like, but still &#8230; well, you know.</p>

Having raised <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110427/exclusive-whats-former-omniture-ceo-josh-james-doing-since-leaving-adobe-raising-money/">boatloads of money</a>, the Omniture founder who bolted Adobe last year bought a small start-up in his native Utah and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110713/meet-domo-the-latest-chapter-in-the-josh-james-saga/">transformed it into Domo Technologies</a>, a data analytics company.</p>
<p>That was July. Wednesday, Domo will announce that it has raised another batch of money, and is bringing in a new investor. The company has closed a $20 million round led by Institutional Venture Partners. </p>
<p>IVP, which had invested in Omniture and so has a history with James, is joining an all-star cast of investors including Benchmark Capital; Andreessen Horowitz; Ron Conway and David Lee of SV Angel; and Hummer Winblad, plus a bunch of personal investments. The round &#8212; which is being described as an A-1 round, brings Domo&#8217;s total capital raised to date to $63 million. </p>
<p>IVP general partner Todd Chaffee said Domo is an example of a dynamic management team going after a high-growth market. &#8220;We know Josh has the experience to build Domo into a disruptive and dominant player in a growing $10 billion market,&#8221; he said in a statement. Aside from Omniture, IVP has backed HomeAway, MySQL, Twitter and Zynga.</p>
<p>James wouldn&#8217;t tell me the implied valuation, but he did concede that it&#8217;s upward of &#8220;a couple hundred million.&#8221; And if that&#8217;s not surprising enough, what&#8217;s equally surprising is one possible use for the money: Acquisitions. Well, maybe. </p>
<p>&#8220;Let&#8217;s just suppose, and this is 100 percent supposition,&#8221; he told me over the phone Tuesday, &#8220;that we want to buy someone. We&#8217;ve thought about it. We&#8217;ve had potential targets cross the email threads. It&#8217;s not the right time to do that stuff just yet. But it&#8217;s nice to know we have the flexibility when the time comes.&#8221;</p>
<p>So where&#8217;s Domo, the business intelligence software-as-service play he was building? It&#8217;s running as a demonstration with a few early customers, he says. And he&#8217;ll have more to say about it publicly in about three to four months.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a few thousand people who say they want to see a demo, and we&#8217;re working through that list,&#8221; James says. &#8220;The feedback has been more positive and at a higher rate than I would have thought possible. I think we&#8217;re going to have to figure out how to do a lot of installations all at once.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s what we call a good problem to have.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-149874" title="steelhouse_mrs fields" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/steelhouse_mrs-fields.png" alt="" width="292" height="225" />The Los Angeles-based company is aiming to become the eHarmony of e-commerce, meaning that it is trying to help e-commerce providers match the right shopping experience to the right shopper, in real time.</p>
<p>The reason SteelHouse is optimistic is that its president and CEO, Mark Douglas, was the VP of technology at eHarmony for almost four years.</p>
<p>Investors in the latest round include Greycroft Partners, Rincon Venture Partners and Lighthouse Venture Group. The company&#8217;s original investors are Baroda Ventures and Silicon Valley angel Ron Conway. The company had previously raised $1.55 million in a first round.</p>
<p>SteelHouse is building a behavioral platform that allows e-commerce companies to present different offers to shoppers, based on the personality and behavior of the person visiting. Some of its clients include Comedy Central, Mrs. Fields, SkyMall, eCampus.com, Evite and Cooking.com.</p>
<p>The company says it will use the capital to continue investing in its technology.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Early Facebook exec Sean Parker and Accel partner Jim Breyer today criticized the surplus of early-stage funding in Silicon Valley, saying that freely available money spreads talent too thinly among too many Internet start-ups and makes it less likely for new companies to have a major industry impact.</p>

<p>&#8220;A lot of those early-stage investors, they&#8217;ll fund literally anything&#8221; Parker said, calling the phenomenon &#8220;the assembly line approach to investing,&#8221; where an idea comes in and an investment comes out. Meanwhile, later-stage investors are themselves funding early-stage investors to access their deal flow.</p>
<p>Breyer, who is a Facebook board member and an investor in Parker&#8217;s pre-launch start-up <a href="https://airtime.com/">Airtime</a>, agreed with Parker and said the early-stage frenzy &#8220;will end badly.&#8221;</p>
<p>Breyer noted that the &#8220;spray-and-pray&#8221; mentality is especially prevalent in Silicon Valley and somewhat present in New York City and Beijing, but thankfully not in the rest of the world.</p>
<p>The two men&#8217;s comments came as part of a discussion about jobs and the social impact of technology at the Techonomy conference in Tucson, Ariz.</p>
<p>Parker admitted that the icon of rapid-fire angel investing, Ron Conway of SV Angel, is a close friend and an investor in every company he&#8217;s started.</p>
<p>But that doesn&#8217;t mean the world needs more Ron Conways, Parker said. &#8220;It&#8217;s fine if there&#8217;s a few guys doing this, but there&#8217;s so much capital now in the early stage.&#8221;</p>
<p>Parker contended that the Internet is becoming a mature business, where power consolidates among big players like Facebook, Google and Apple &#8212; making it harder for young companies to knock them off. &#8220;For young entrepreneurs, it&#8217;s really not helpful for some guy to come along and write you a check,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>Former Federal Communications Commission Chairman Reed Hundt will join the board of Kno, the online education start-up. </p>
<p>He is currently the principal at REH Advisors.</p>
<p>The Silicon Valley-based Kno began its life offering a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101108/kno-prices-its-student-tablets-at-599-and-899-to-ship-by-end-of-the-year/">student-aimed tablet</a> and education platform, but <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110407/intel-capital-conde-nast-ownerinvest-30-million-in-student-tablet-start-up-kno-intel-takes-over-hardware-biz/">now is focusing solely</a> on the software part of its business.</p>
<p>The company <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110810/kno-taking-electronic-textbooks-to-web-facebook/">announced plans this summer</a> to allow those who buy textbooks from Kno to read them on Facebook and via the Web. It also has an Apple iPad app that takes the product beyond just an electronic version of a traditional textbook.</p>
<p>Kno&#8217;s current backers include prominent venture players like Andreessen Horowitz and First Round Capital, along with investors Mike Maples and Ron Conway. Marc Andreessen, as well as co-founders Osman Rashid (also CEO) and Babur Habib (also CTO), are also on its board.</p>

<p>Hundt served as Chairman of the FCC from 1993-1997 and played a major role in implementing the Snowe-Rockefeller program that directs more than $4 billion annually to connect all classrooms to the Internet and is hailed as one of the largest single national commitments to K-12 education in American history. </p>

<p>The six-month-old San Francisco start-up says the funding will go toward developing a local marketplace that helps people find goods and services that people nearby are willing to sell.</p>

<p>For example, someone might post that they are willing to pay $100 for someone to fix their light switch; or $50 for someone to take them to the airport; or $20 for cowboy boots for a Halloween costume.</p>
<p>Consumers can look online or download an iPhone or Android app to alert them of new listings based on their location.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s the opposite of every other marketplace,&#8221; said Bo Fishback, Zaarly&#8217;s CEO and co-founder.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s first round was led by Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers and Sands Capital Ventures with CMEA, Venture51, CrunchFund, Marc Ecko and Artists &#038; Instigators also participating. The company had previously raised angel financing in March from Ashton Kutcher, Ron Conway and other prominent investors.</p>
<p>While the model is different from Craigslist and eBay, it shares similarities with such start-ups as Uber or Airbnb. Uber connects people looking for a ride with a private car service within five to 10 minutes, tapping into the glut of town cars at any given time during the day. Airbnb connects travelers with locals who are willing to rent out rooms in their homes.</p>
<p>Fishback said Zaarly&#8217;s goal is to host all kinds of deals, and that he could envision someday partnering with specialists such as Uber or Airbnb.</p>
<p>The company has 30 employees and plans to ramp up to 50 fairly quickly.</p>
<p>Fishback doesn&#8217;t have a clear sense of how the company will make money in the future; instead, the company is focused on signing up as many customers as possible. Right now, it&#8217;s free if you conduct the transaction in person by cash or check. If you opt to pay by credit card, Zaarly charges a convenience fee.</p>

<p>Silicon Valley venture firm Andreessen Horowitz said today that it was joining well-known investors Ron Conway and DST Global&#8217;s Yuri Milner in the Y Combinator Start Fund, which gives $150,000 to each start-up in its semi-annual group.</p>
<p>Andreessen Horowitz will be investing $50,000 of the total in each entrepreneurial effort, starting with the next &#8220;class&#8221; of up to five dozen companies later this month in the well-regarded incubator.</p>
<p>The money comes in the form of convertible debt, which is a loan that can convert if a start-up raises a funding round. Start-ups can refuse the money, although most do not.</p>
<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t tell you how impressed we have been with the quality of the start-ups that Y Combinator has had,&#8221; said Marc Andreessen in an interview with me this afternoon. &#8220;[Co-founders Paul Graham and Jessica Livingston] have become the consigliere to a whole new generation of entrepreneurs.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. Y Combinator assembles these start-ups twice a year, giving them about $15,000 to work on their idea, but &#8212; more importantly &#8212; providing a lot of support and entree to powerful investors in Silicon Valley. Its efforts have been critical to the beginnings of many successful companies, such as Reddit, Loopt and Scribd.</p>
<p>&#8220;So many of the high quality seed deals have been coming from Y Combinator and we wanted to be close to all those companies,&#8221; said Andreessen. &#8220;It&#8217;s a great view of what&#8217;s coming next from the very best start-ups.&#8221;</p>

<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/09/Twiliofund.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-123351" title="Twiliofund" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/09/Twiliofund-232x285.png" alt="" width="162" height="200" /></a>The new Twilio Fund consists of $125,000 from McClure&#8217;s 500 Startups and another $125,000 from Conway&#8217;s SV Angel. Chosen start-ups get at least $10,000 each, according to McClure.</p>
<p>Highlights from the last batch included WorkersNow, Proven and FastCall411, McClure said.</p>
<p>McClure said he and Conway &#8212; who has been called &#8220;the godfather of Silicon Valley&#8221; &#8212; have worked on a few investments together lately, and joked, &#8220;It&#8217;s OK to kiss the ring every now and again.&#8221;</p>

<p><em>Of course</em> I have something to say about the news yesterday that AOL would be a key investor in a new early-stage venture fund being started by TechCrunch&#8217;s perpetually petulant editor Michael Arrington &#8212; with a big, fat and decidedly greasy assist from a panoply of Silicon Valley&#8217;s most powerful VC firms and angel investors.</p>
<p>Arrington has previously called me &#8220;chief whiner&#8221; &#8212; <em>oooh, buuuurn</em>, although fair enough, since I have compared him to an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081218/techcrunchs-yertle-the-turtle-tantrum-over-news-embargoes/">egomaniac turtle named Yertle</a> in the past &#8212; about my nagging him over the importance of upholding standards of fairness and ethics in journalism.</p>
<p>So as not to let him down, let me begin the whining.</p>
<p>First, my initial reaction when I first heard about the deal: Ugh. Sigh. Hopelessly corrupt. Now 100 percent more icky! A giant, greedy, Silicon Valley pig pile.</p>
<p>I was upset.</p>
<p>By early evening, after my kids told me to chillax, my dark mood had changed to accept that the transaction &#8212; however profoundly distasteful to me &#8212; was part and parcel of the insidious log-rolling, back-scratching ecosystem that has happened in every other center of power in the universe since the beginning of time.</p>
<p>And so it goes in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>In fact, the creation of a $20 million investment kitty that Arrington has dubbed CrunchFund is simply the formalization of a long-standing arrangement that has already been going on since he founded his popular tech blog.</p>
<p>That is to say, in which the basic standards of journalism are first warped by calling it newfangled truth-telling and then endlessly corroded by using a wily and unusually aggressive combination of favors and threats to extract, from start-ups and VCs in need of press, both exclusive access and information.</p>
<p>And now, inevitably, money.</p>
<p>This could have been a lot cleaner, of course, by Arrington simply resigning from TechCrunch, becoming a VC and perhaps starting a new blog where his agenda is much clearer, from which he could huff and puff away as he does with much entertaining gusto at real and (mostly) imagined slights.</p>
<p>There is certainly precedent for VCs blogging, including Fred Wilson, Brad Feld and Ben Horowitz. And, despite my criticisms about ethics, it is clear that Arrington is a talented writer whose unique voice would be even stronger if it was truly seen as separate from what has become a news organization.</p>

<p>But because of his obvious need to be the center of attention &#8212; requiring the ermine kingmaker mantle and foisting his patented I&#8217;m-here-to-tell-it-like-it-is attitude on us all &#8212; that appears to be impossible. </p>
<p>(By the way, I await Arrington&#8217;s usual inane rant about the fictional conflicts of interest related to my gay Google marriage anytime now in 3 &#8230; 2 &#8230; 1, always and purposefully leaving out the pertinent facts that I can only wed <em>one</em> person, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/about/#kara-ethics">get no financial benefit</a> and am also a prominent critic of the scary search behemoth, while he can make a <em>badillion</em> questionable and grossly tangled investments.)</p>
<p>Personal annoyances aside, what&#8217;s most interesting here is the group of Silicon Valley power players who lined up to bow and scrape and then hand over a small pile of dough to the blogger who would be king.</p>
<p>They include: Sequoia Capital, Redpoint Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Greylock Partners, Austin Ventures and Accel Partners, as well as individual investments from partners at Benchmark Capital and Andreessen Horowitz, entrepreneur Kevin Rose and DST Global&#8217;s Yuri Milner. And, of course, the inevitable Arrington BFF Ron Conway.</p>
<p>Holy googa mooga, that would be, well, <em>everyone</em>, except Ashton Kutcher and Justin Timberlake (who will surely appear soon enough).</p>
<p>As one person also pointed out to me, I don&#8217;t recall this many competing VCs investing in one company, let alone <em>another</em> venture fund.</p>
<p>It goes without saying that the reasons they all decided to jump in this fetid pool with abandon are quite varied, if all entirely compromised.</p>
<p>One investor told me &#8212; off the record, naturally &#8212; that he thought it would be an interesting experiment to see what happened and so he wanted in, especially since everyone else was doing it.</p>
<p>Another well-known VC said that there is no downside to being financially affiliated, especially in attracting talent to its start-ups, with Arrington and, by extension, TechCrunch.</p>
<p>The well-respected Reid Hoffman of Greylock was the only one brave enough to talk on the record, explaining the reasoning pretty clearly:</p>

<p>&#8220;Techcrunch will get some real deal flow from entrepreneurs that we would otherwise not see, because they have established a prominent position as the SV/Tech industry information feed. As many tech entrepreneurs read it &#8212; both within Silicon Valley and globally &#8212; and view the information news feed to be their target for announcing themselves to the world, Crunchfund will have access to deal flow to these diverse and early stage companies. Some of these companies will be the kind of early stage companies with billion-dollar potential that Greylock invests in.&#8221;</p>
<p>There you have it: No one can afford to be out of the deal flow in these times, even if it means cutting corners.</p>
<p>While TechCrunch&#8217;s owner, AOL, said Arrington will no longer be managing editor, with only writing duties at the site he dominates and with no editorial control, Hoffman&#8217;s use of TechCrunch for CrunchFund was accurate, because in the eyes of many they are interchangeable.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s due to the fact that Arrington still breaks or is clearly the source for important stories on the site and, more importantly, is the big swinging dude who attracts all the eager entrepreneurs to the party. He is the fulcrum of that site, even as it has grown.</p>
<p>And so it will remain, I am guessing, no matter how much AOL insists it will not be so, because the easy questions pile up quickly:</p>
<p>Will Arrington keep doing what are clearly news stories, for example, even though he <em>protesteth</em> too much &#8212; as he did in the <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/02/technology/michael-arrington-techcrunch-blogger-to-invest-in-start-ups.html?_r=1">New York Times</a> yesterday &#8212; that he is not a journalist?</p>
<p>And, if so, is it right for him to do so given his insider status, creating a nonparity of sourcing and crystal clear conflicts of interest?</p>
<p>Most of all, can he resist his palpable love of news-breaking and scoops, even if he gets them in ever more unseemly ways?</p>
<p>As if to make it all pretty, Arrington told reporters yesterday that he has put a clause in his limited partnership agreement so he can report on anything he likes, and in any way, about his investors and their companies, however confidential, except those he invests in.</p>
<p>O joyous day! Freedom of the press is preserved and our sacred First Amendment can breathe a sigh of relief, now that it is enshrined in an unholy blogger-VC LP agreement.</p>
<p>After pausing for a moment so that Thomas Jefferson and Edward R. Murrow can stop spinning in their graves, you can go down this road for many increasingly bumpy miles, which only becomes more twisted and confusing as it continues.</p>

<p>I finally talked to one investor in CrunchFund, who said simply and honestly: &#8220;It&#8217;s not that much money, so who cares?&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, who does care anymore about crossing what had long been very bright lines in journalism and, if you want to get all cosmic, in life? </p>
<p>Obviously, most of all, not AOL, or its CEO Tim Armstrong, or its head of content, Arianna Huffington. The pair, for whatever reason, decided to make a startling exception for Arrington from a rule that explicitly bars reporters at its media units from investing in the companies they cover.</p>
<p>That happened after he <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110428/godspeed-on-that-investing-thing-yertle-but-i-still-have-some-questions-for-your-boss-arianna/">recently did a complete 180</a> from a previous decision to stop investing and jumped right back in, leaving Armstrong and Huffington to clean up the ethical mess.</p>
<p>They only made it worse, with their decision to throw journalism under the bus by letting Arrington do as he pleased, while touting how important it was for other content sites at AOL to remain more pure.</p>
<p>In the spirit of full disclosure, these kinds of ethical lapses are endemic these days in journalism. Case in point: The appalling phone-hacking controversy taking place at News Corp.&#8217;s News International unit in Britain.</p>
<p>While I cannot speak for Dow Jones, I can say that the behavior in another News Corp. property certainly takes its toll on those who adhere to higher standards at the company, especially when it comes to morale.</p>
<p>Thus, I can imagine how others feel at AOL &#8212; including those you-know-who-you-are silent ones at TechCrunch &#8212; who can&#8217;t and, more to the point, <em>wouldn&#8217;t</em> make the deals Arrington has been allowed to get away with.</p>
<p>It is not a good feeling, I can assure you.</p>
<p>And, while I have not spoken to her about it, I&#8217;d imagine that Huffington cannot be thrilled to be pushing for better journalism at AOL and trying to burnish her cred by hiring some top reporters, while also having to deal with this.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s okay, because Armstrong was perfectly willing to do the awkward pretzel-twist needed to explain away the controversial situation, also in an interview with the Times:</p>
<p>&#8220;TechCrunch is a different property and they have different standards. We have a traditional understanding of journalism with the exception of TechCrunch, which is different but is transparent about it.&#8221;</p>

<p>In this case, Tim, I am sorry to inform you that transparency is a complete canard and is more likely to end up covering up a lot more transgressions than it ever will reveal.</p>
<p>And, essentially and lazily sloughing it off by saying, &#8220;That&#8217;s just Mike being Mike,&#8221; is not going to cut it, at least not with me.</p>
<p>Not that any amount of tsk-tsking about it matters, I suppose, as Arrington finally gets his fervent Pinocchio-on-a-star wish to be a real-boy VC, can add yet another tainted buck to the pile of billions his venture pals already have, and just call it another typical day in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Still, when you are the designated whiner-in-chief, it is pretty much all one can do.</p>

<p>Whether or not to sell any of their shares in Twitter is the big decision facing stakeholders of the microblogging service right now, as the second $400 million part of the company&#8217;s recent funding by Russia&#8217;s DST Global is completed in the next several weeks.</p>
<p>That includes everyone from early angel investors to those who bought it on the secondary markets to Twitter&#8217;s 600 employees, all of whom can sell a portion &#8212; up to 20 percent, sources said &#8212; of their holdings.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s all part of a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110720/twitter-poised-to-close-a-two-stage-800m-funding-with-half-used-to-cash-out-investors-and-employees/">recent $800 million mega-funding</a> by Twitter, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110801/twitter-confirms-funding-with-dst/">valuing the San Francisco company at $8.4 billion</a>.</p>
<p>While $400 million went to Twitter, the second tranche of $400 million of the total was targeted to cash out current investors and also employees of the company.</p>
<p>Current investors include Benchmark Capital, Union Square Ventures, Spark Capital and several other venture firms, as well as a spate of prominent angel investors, such as Ron Conway.</p>
<p>Whether DST &#8212; as well as other smaller buyers, including early Twitter investor Chris Sacca and T. Rowe Price, according to the tender offer &#8212; gets them and others to sell enough shares is the big question, especially since few want to get caught in what one shareholder called the &#8220;Facebook idiot box.&#8221;</p>
<p>That would be referring to those who sold their investments in Facebook two years ago, when the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090713/facebookers-start-cashing-out-with-new-100-million-investment/">social networking giant allowed its employees to sell</a> 20 percent of their stakes to DST.</p>
<p>The financing was part of a $100 million add-on to a $200 million investment in the social networking company by the aggressive Russian investor.</p>
<p>At the time, the tender offer valued Facebook at $6.5 billion for the common stock, or $14.77 a share.</p>
<p>Of course, Facebook is worth upward of more than 10 times that now. <em>Oops!</em></p>
<p>That&#8217;s why high-profile Silicon Valley venture firm Andreessen Horowitz, for example, is not selling out any of the shares it bought earlier this year in an <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110209/exclusive-andreessen-horowitz-invests-80-million-in-twitter/">$80 million transaction in private secondary markets</a>. </p>
<p>Reasons to sell, of course, are also compelling.</p>
<p>Some investors might want to lock in upside, especially if they think the latest valuation is too high. </p>
<p>For venture capitalists in the company, some might want to return a win to their limited partners, while Twitter employees might want to put a down payment on a house after years of toiling in the start-up.</p>
<p>Others might also be worried about Twitter&#8217;s prospects going forward and might determine that the recent round was the high point of its market value. Twitter has indeed struggled to find a sustainable and lucrative business model, focused on advertising. </p>
<p>In addition, although it has recently stabilized, others might worry about Twitter&#8217;s management changes over the last year, as co-founders Biz Stone and Evan Williams have departed. Twitter creator and other co-founder Jack Dorsey is now running the company&#8217;s product efforts, with CEO Dick Costolo (who looks a lot like that Woody Allen shot above from the classic movie, &#8220;Take the Money and Run&#8221;).</p>
<p>Then again, that was exactly the take on Facebook several years ago, so it is now a case on all sides of seller beware.</p>
<p>Twitter declined to comment and I have not heard back yet from DST about the status of the transaction.</p>

Enterprise software companies are taking a page or three from the likes of Facebook and Twitter to create social streams that keep people informed about what&#8217;s going on within a company.</p>
<p>One of the social enterprise companies getting a fair amount of buzz is Yammer. Initially known as a &#8220;Twitter for work,&#8221; it&#8217;s now transforming itself into something of a catchall for updates generated by numerous workplace applications.</p>
<p>Today, Yammer will announce that it will work with another application, and it&#8217;s a big one: Salesforce.com. The folks at Yammer used Force.com &#8212; Salesforce&#8217;s development platform &#8212; and Yammer&#8217;s own API to grab activity stream data from within Salesforce. Sales leads, deals, marketing campaigns and all sorts of other activity that gets entered into Salesforce.com become objects that can appear directly within a Yammer stream, which is essentially as easy to keep track of and interact with as a Facebook stream.</p>
<p>In fact, a Facebook stream is exactly what Yammer CEO David Sacks compares it to. &#8220;A few months ago we released an activity stream API that lets any application push activity stories into Yammer, the same way that Zynga can push items like the latest Mafia Wars score into your Facebook stream,&#8221; he says. </p>
<p>Yammer did the integration with help from Appirio, a cloud apps developer that gets tapped to do a lot of third-party integration work.</p>
<p>But doesn&#8217;t Salesforce already have its own social software? Why, yes it does. Its Chatter.com service launched to much fanfare with a pair of <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110127/salesforce-com-to-plug-chatter-com-now-free-for-all-companies-during-the-super-bowl/">expensive TV ads that</a> aired during the Super Bowl, which in turn kicked off a bit of a<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110206/chatter-coms-super-bowl-tv-ads-touch-off-an-ad-skirmish-on-google/"> skirmish within Google search results</a> that Yammer took part in.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not as if Yammer were partnering with Salesforce here. Sacks says that Yammer just, well, did it. &#8220;The nice thing about the open API world that we live in is that you don&#8217;t necessarily have to seek permission to use these APIs.&#8221;</p>
<p>The wider point of Yammer, Sacks says, is to pull social data not just from one application, but from many. Not everyone in a company is going to be using Salesforce.com in the first place. The sales department might, and senior management might, but it&#8217;s of little use to, say, the human resources department or the accounting department. So Yammer talks to other applications, too. Case in point: Netsuite. Yammer announced an integration with that cloud-based business management suite of applications in May. It also works with Microsoft&#8217;s SharePoint and Active Directory.</p>
<p>And there will be more, Sacks says. &#8220;We&#8217;re seeing a trend with all these various line-of-business applications to build their own social networks into what they do,&#8221; he says. &#8220;And we&#8217;re already seeing customers and potential customers complaining about this, because they wind up with a dozen different social networks in their company and that defeats the whole purpose.&#8221; Yammer, he says, will be the middleman application that brings all those social streams into one place for everyone in a company. The comparison to Facebook is no accident: Yammer&#8217;s technology is based on Facebook&#8217;s <a href="https://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraph/">Open Graph protocol</a>.</p>
<p>So what happened to Chatter? Well, ask Salesforce and you&#8217;ll see some impressive stats and customer wins. Salesforce says that Chatter is used by 100,000 companies, among them Dell, Qualcomm and Lenovo.</p>
<p>But Yammer&#8217;s got 100,000 customers of its own, boasts three million corporate end users, and is adding them at a rate of about 200,000 a month. And there are some pretty impressive names among them, including chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices, LG Electronics, eBay and Thomson Reuters. And it got those without having to spend tens of millions on Super Bowl ads. A half-million of those customers are using the paid version of Yammer. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a fast-moving business and there are numerous players. Another big one to watch is Jive Software, which was said last week to have <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110817/jive-software-said-to-hire-ipo-bankers-but-no-one-there-is-talking/">hired bankers</a> for a pending IPO, and which is being valued at $1 billion.</p>
<p>No wonder Yammer has done so well in raising funding. It has brought in a combined $40 million, which was topped off last November by a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101130/25-million-more-for-yammer-the-twitter-for-work/">$25 million round</a> led by US Venture Partners, with Emergence Capital, Charles River Ventures and the Founders Fund also participating. Ron Conway&#8217;s SV Angel was an early investor as well.</p>

<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/06/monopoly-money.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-93527" title="monopoly money" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/06/monopoly-money-380x285.jpg" alt="" width="228" height="171" /></a>The funding is intended to alleviate founder stress and encourage faster product progress, said AngelPad&#8217;s Thomas Korte. Competing program Y Combinator has a similar deal to give participating companies $150,000 from DST investor Yuri Milner and Ron Conway&#8217;s SV Angel, the so-called &#8220;Start Fund.&#8221;</p>
<p>Korte said the AngelPad money is not the same: &#8220;It&#8217;s different. It&#8217;s a real investment from a VC firm, rather than just plain capital or quote-unquote free money.&#8221;</p>
<p>Korte acknowledged that having funding from the get-go will put more pressure on the companies in his program to make a return for their investors. &#8220;It&#8217;s probably more of a sense of responsibility,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>AngelPad is two weeks away from starting its third class of 15 start-ups, but has left one spot open for a company that may be enticed by this new funding offer, Korte said.</p>
<p>Korte declined to specify which VCs are putting up the money, but said they focus on investments in B2B, mobile and e-commerce, like AngelPad.</p>
<p>Though AngelPad has a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110712/googlers-stick-together-google-ventures-invests-in-angelpad-start-ups/">close relationship with Google Ventures</a>, a spokeswoman for Google Ventures said that the firm was not one of the two participants in the new funding program.</p>

<p>Well, from a brand perspective, at least, as the image advertising start-up changes to an easier-to-say name and also launches a new platform for image applications.</p>
<p>The Mountain View, Calif.-based start-up &#8212; which is backed by Google Ventures, CMEA Ventures, August Capital, Foundation Capital and Shasta Ventures, as well as by angel investors Ron Conway, Gideon Yu and Maynard Webb &#8212; aims to do for Web photos what the search giant did for text.</p>

<p>The new name for the company that called itself <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110322/pixazzas-bob-lisbonne-talks-about-adsense-for-images/">&#8220;AdSense for images&#8221;</a> pretty much speaks for itself.</p>
<p>In addition to Luminate&#8217;s previous sharing, commerce and advertising apps, the company will offer information, navigation and public service apps, which you can see below</p>
<p>Luminate says its interactive images are viewed three billion times per month.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s an old maxim in fundraising: It&#8217;s better to get one dollar from 100 supporters than it is to get $100 from one supporter. Or you can just get Justin Bieber to tweet about you. </p>
<p>Assuming you can&#8217;t trap yourself a Bieber, a new online fundraising start-up called Rally is available to take advantage of the network effects of your real supporters. </p>
<p>Rally CEO Tom Seres was quick to point out that social online fundraising isn&#8217;t new, but says that &#8220;most organizations see the Red Cross&#8217; success and think that putting a Twitter button on their site will make them more money.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to Seres, they are wrong. </p>
<p>&#8220;The reality is, those few campaigns that succeed in social do so because of huge networks,&#8221; he said. &#8220;[But] not everyone &#8230; has Will Smith tweeting about their fundraising.&#8221;  </p>
<p>Rally&#8217;s recent growth got it a chunk of funding from a prominent string of investors, including Mike Maples, Reid Hoffman and Ron Conway. Seres would only describe it as a &#8220;fairly large seed round.&#8221;</p>

<p>The cash is being spent on turning an existing white-label product called Piryx, built by Seres and his co-founders, into the more consumer-focused Rally, which is both the name of the new platform and the pivoted company.</p>
<p>Why the consumer focus? </p>
<p>The most significant way Rally&#8217;s model differs from other fundraising sites such as Kickstarter, Seres said, is that Rally is the payment processor as well as the fundraising platform. Kickstarter farms its payments out to Amazon. </p>
<p>The four percent Rally charges on most transactions &#8212; which covers the credit card fees, as well as Rally&#8217;s profits &#8212; leaves a pretty slim margin. Therefore, massive profitability for Rally will only come at massive scale.</p>
<p>The reborn Rally&#8217;s main focus is to make online fundraising &#8220;more social&#8221; &#8212; or more annoying, depending on your take. </p>
<p>Its platform allows for two layers of supporters, Seres said: &#8220;One who just wants to donate &#8230; and another who can actually start [his or her] own fundraiser associated with an existing Rally campaign.&#8221;</p>
<p>This model isn&#8217;t new for fundraising, and Seres said it has been successful for events such as walks for charity, partially because &#8220;People respond better to requests from people they know. It is about leveraging that closer network connection.&#8221;</p>
<p>Just as interesting as Rally&#8217;s &#8220;better mousetrap&#8221; model for the online fundraising space is the type of data it will gather about what works with donors online. </p>
<p>If it can reach scale, Seres said, Rally would &#8220;be able to tell fundraisers what the value of a piece of content they post is, and on the larger scale, what people actually care about online and what makes them act.&#8221; </p>

<p>When we last looked in on his efforts to fund this new venture, James had raised $1 million from Andreessen Horowitz, and had also gotten a commitment from  Ron Conway&#8217;s SV Angel, both as part of a seed round worth more than $5 million. On top of that, he&#8217;s already pretty far along in raising a Series A round, and Benchmark Capital had already committed up to $30 million.</p>
<p>Remember also that though he had acquired <a href="http://www.corda.com/">Corda Technologies</a>, a company based in Lindon, Utah, near his home, he said that company was to be the basis for the new one, only with a much bigger vision? The thing is, he hadn&#8217;t decided on what to name the new venture.</p>
<p>Well now, he&#8217;s apparently decided on the name, but he&#8217;s just not ready to tell the world yet. Instead he&#8217;s going to let you guess. And there are clues. He&#8217;s announced on his personal blog a contest to work out the name, and to guess it you have to figure out a mathematical equation. A $10,000 prize goes to the first one with the answer, as explained in the fine print from <a href="http://joshjames.com/newgig">James&#8217;s personal site</a>. <p>In practice that looks a little like this: Someone browses online for a particular product &#8212; perhaps a bike trailer. Later, when they are on a separate site, they see the same trailer being advertised in an ad. [See photo below.]</p>
<p>The second round of funding was led by Bain Capital Ventures. To date, TellApart has raised $17.75 million.</p>
<p>The company was founded in 2009 by former Google product and engineering executives Josh McFarland and Mark Ayzenshtat.</p>
<p><a rel="attachment wp-att-85792" href="http://allthingsd.com/20110613/tellapart-raises-13-million-to-help-online-retailers-nab-waffling-customers/tellapart/"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-85792" title="tellapart" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/06/tellapart-287x285.png" alt="" width="287" height="285" /></a>Other investors include Greylock Partners and several well-known angels, including Ron Conway, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, LinkedIn&#8217;s founder Reid Hoffman and OpenTable&#8217;s former CEO Jeff Jordan.</p>
<p>The new financing will go toward supporting additional customers.</p>
<p>The company says it has the ability to “tell apart” the best customers from the rest. By identifying the most likely customers to target, it says it can generate an average 7.5 percent user click-through rate and an average 4.5 percent conversion rate from the ads it places on other sites.</p>
<p>By retargeting, TellApart claims its clients end up seeing an average of three to five percent lift in revenue.</p>
<p>TellApart only charges for its platform when a prospective customer clicks on a TellApart ad and makes a purchase.</p>
<p>Customers include Diapers.com, eBags, Drugstore.com and Hayneedle.</p>

Funny, considering the site helps people flirt with one another.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-6193" title="EvanReas" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/05/EvanReas-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />But last week we were granted access to the Palo Alto &#8220;hacker house&#8221; where the recently seed-funded LAL team has set up shop to expand its early success into a larger vision. No, LAL is not turning its flirting site into a dating site, but rather becoming a way for people to interact with others who are nearby, as co-founder and CEO Evan Reas described in a video interview embedded here.</p>
<p>LAL, which started at Stanford University last fall and now is live at 450 different colleges, gets 250,000 page views per day for its message boards and Web chat service. Reas estimates 75 percent of Stanford students have used the site. But total user numbers are slightly hard to ascertain, he noted, because LAL allows people to post and chat anonymously.</p>
<p>Reas promises that LAL&#8217;s grand vision will become more apparent in the coming weeks, but for now here&#8217;s why he&#8217;s been able to bend investors&#8217; ears:</p>
<ul>
<li>A dynamic social graph determined by users&#8217; locations seems like an alternative to the static real-name-based Facebook social graph.</li>
<li>Flirting provides enticing content for both participants and voyeurs.</li>
<li>When it comes to virality, densely populated college campuses seem to be a match waiting to be lit.</li>
</ul>
<p>LAL participated in the most recent class of Y Combinator and raised a seed round led by Marc Andreessen of Andreessen Horowitz, as was <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/04/28/likealittle-funding/">reported by TechCrunch</a>.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the full list of investors, provided by LAL: Marc Andreessen, Paul Buchheit, Ron Conway, Scott Cook, Charles River Ventures led by Saar Gur, Matrix Partners led by Josh Hannah, Ashton Kutcher and Guy Oseary, David King, Yuri Milner, Shervin Pishevar, Brian Pokorny, Keith Rabois, Naval Ravikant, David Sacks and Y Combinator.</p>
<p>Reas told us LikeALittle was probably the seventh or eighth idea he and his co-founders Prasanna Sankaranarayanan and Shubham Mittal prototyped under the header Hawthorne Labs. The quick viral success of LAL at Stanford indicated to the three that they might have found their elusive &#8220;billion-dollar idea,&#8221; so they stuck with it, Reas said. Prior to Hawthorne Labs, Reas had been a co-founder of <a href="https://www.profounder.com/">ProFounder</a> and received his MBA from Stanford.</p>

<p>Late last month, BoomTown posted about a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation">huge venture funding effort</a> by the high-profile and even more highly designed social media reading app for the Apple iPad, Flipboard.</p>
<p>Today, its co-founder and CEO Mike McCue confirmed the $50 million round at an eye-popping $200 million valuation, in a wide-ranging interview at the start-up&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., HQ.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously thrilled, because we think it confirms our focus that people want a beautifully designed way to interact with content and to share it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And there is a lot more to come&#8211;on a scale of one to 10, we&#8217;re just at a two or three.&#8221;</p>
<p>The bulk of the new second round of funding&#8211;Flipboard had previously raised $10.5 million&#8211;came from New York-based Insight Venture Partners.</p>
<p>Insight&#8217;s Jerry Murdock said in an interview that he was excited about the idea of &#8220;social endorsement&#8221; that Flipboard was pioneering.</p>
<p>&#8220;We back great entrepreneurs and Flipboard is that and also in an obviously unique position to solve a problem of media consumption in the digital age,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The sky is the limit. Or more precisely it is the best environment to consume curated real-time content for Twitter and Facebook, because of the user experience and social endorsement integration with the content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Insight is also an investor in Twitter.</p>
<p>Also stepping up in the new Flipboard round is Comcast&#8217;s venture arm, as well as previous investors, including Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Twitter co-founder and product guru Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder and Asana dude Dustin Moskovitz, the ubiquitous Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>&#8220;From a Comcast perspective, we&#8217;re intrigued with Mike and what he&#8217;s doing with content aggregation,&#8221; said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101115/exclusive-comcasts-top-digital-exec-amy-banse-to-open-new-silicon-valley-equity-fund-for-cable-giant-and-nbc">Amy Banse</a>, Comcast Interactive Capital&#8217;s new head. &#8220;We think we can learn from him and he from us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime entrepreneur McCue (Netscape, Tellme) and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million">launched to much attention in July</a>.</p>
<p>The elegant Flipboard&#8211;which McCue recently told me in an onstage interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin had zero revenues thus far&#8211;has changed the game on the consumption of social media.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from media RSS feeds and sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In its current offering, there are pull-quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of linked-out content. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on a social networking or microblogging site.</p>
<p>McCue said the new giant pile of cash will be used to increase its 32-person staff to about 50, international expansion, small acquisitions and more product development on more platforms.</p>
<p>The next in the arena will be the iPhone version of Flipboard, said McCue, followed by one for the Google Android mobile operating system eventually.</p>
<p>Left unsaid, of course, was the need for funding to fight the likelihood of increased competition in the hot space for delivering both professional and social content to consumers on a wide range of devices.</p>
<p>Rivals are varied, such as Silicon Valley&#8217;s most adorable news reader start-up <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Pulse</a> and also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite">Zite</a>, a news reader which was recently sued for copyright infringement by a group of major publishers.</p>
<p>There are bigger potential players, such as Google, which is trying to find various ways to move into the social space.</p>
<p>In fact, said several sources, Google and others have made acquisition approaches to Flipboard, which has instead opted for raising more funding and staying independent for now.</p>
<p>McCue declined to talk about that, but did note that he is not surprised by publisher interest, especially of the worried and wary kind, in the arena.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anyone not respectful of others&#8217; content is going to get in that kind of trouble,&#8221; he said, noting Flipboard has struck deals with 17 big publishers so far, including this morning&#8217;s announcement about a partnership with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Oprah Winfrey&#8217;s and Discovery&#8217;s OWN cable network</a>. &#8220;There is not one half to this equation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>McCue said advertising will be the key to Flipboard&#8217;s business plan in the future, although it&#8217;s not clear if the company will ever sell advertising itself.</p>
<p>Rather, it will partner with publishers seeking better distribution in the explosive tablet and smartphone market, where Flipboard has been gaining traction quickly.</p>
<p>But until that is sorted out, there is now $50 million more in the Flipboard kitty to figure it all out.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this funding, we can grow at the right pace and have a lot of flexibility to get the product right,&#8221; said McCue. &#8220;And, that&#8217;s the most important thing.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.topguest.com/">Topguest</a> co-founder and CEO Geoff Lewis says he figured out a way to hack the near-impossible problem of hiring engineers in Silicon Valley: find them in Australia.</p>
<p>Apparently the U.S. visa process coming from Down Under is relatively pain-free, and at a cost of &#8220;a few thousand dollars&#8221; Lewis now has four Australians and himself, a Canadian, working on Topguest. &#8220;No Americans,&#8221; he said as a point of pride in an interview at his San Francisco office this week.</p>
<p>Lewis&#8217; explanation for how a small, less-than-a-year-old start-up with relatively few users can score deals with the likes of Virgin America, Hilton and InterContinental Hotels Group is similar: &#8220;Just hustling.&#8221;</p>

<p>Topguest ties customers&#8217; geo-located social media activity with existing loyalty rewards programs. &#8220;We have no loyalty or travel domain expertise,&#8221; Lewis said.</p>
<p>Topguest doesn&#8217;t have its own check-in app, but it plugs into users&#8217; Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare and Instagram accounts to pull in their posts. For instance, getting the most likes on Instagram for a picture taken at a U.S. airport this week will earn Topguest users 1,000 Virgin America Elevate points (the minimum amount needed to buy a flight is 2,500).</p>
<p>In comparison to the fleeting attraction of a nearby special offer on Foursquare, Lewis said, &#8220;deals and discounts aren&#8217;t loyalty.&#8221;</p>
<p>Lewis said Facebook is by far the most-used check-in service by Topguest users, and the company&#8217;s recent Instagram integration has doubled unique visitors to its site.</p>
<p>This weekend, Topguest is launching a partnership with Caesars Entertainment Corp in Las Vegas that will earn users rewards points to spend at the company&#8217;s 1,000 venues.</p>
<p>Topguest makes money by receiving an activation fee for users who participate in loyalty programs (so far 10 percent of its users have signed up for a new loyalty program), as well as a monthly fee in some cases.</p>
<p>Ultimately, said Lewis, Topguest wants to act as a personalized concierge tool for its users, helping them make travel reservations to earn and spend loyalty points.</p>
<p>The company does have to fend off users who game the system by checking into multiple hotels in order to accrue more points. Lewis said Topguest has banned hundreds of users already for such abuse.</p>
<p>Personally, I might tend toward the opposite inclination and resist publicly checking into places where I plan to spend the night. But earning miles for airport check-ins? Sure, why not!</p>
<p>Topguest <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101115/topguest-checks-in-with-2-million-series-a-round-and-peter-thiel-as-advisor/">raised</a> $2 million in Series A funding last year from investors including Founders Fund, as well as angels such as Ron Conway, Keith Rabois, Jeff Clavier and Naval Ravikant. After closing the funding, the company moved from New York City to San Francisco.</p>

<p>Flipboard, the high-profile and highly designed social media reading app for the Apple iPad, is out raising another round of funding at an eye-popping $200 million valuation, according to numerous sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The Palo Alto, CA, company declined to comment on its new funding efforts, which sources said had recently accelerated.</p>
<p>While that valuation might change, several sources considering the investment said it is unlikely to go down in the current frothy financing market in Silicon Valley, especially given Flipboard&#8217;s splashy profile and top-drawer pedigree.</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur Mike McCue and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million"> launched to much attention in July</a>.</p>
<p>That included $10.5 million in venture funding from Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angel investors, such as Twitter Co-founder Jack Dorsey, Facebook Co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, the ubiquitous Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>At the time, it was unclear what Flipboard&#8217;s valuation was. But now, said several sources, it&#8217;s clocking in at a hefty $200 million, which is perhaps no surprise at a time of increasingly lofty investments in tech start-ups.</p>
<p>Suddenly, Foursquare&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100629/location-location-location-foursquare-nabs-20-million-in-vc-funding-at-95-million-pre-money-valuation-plus-blog-posts-of-course/">$95 million valuation</a> seems like a <em>bargain</em>! (Sorry, Dennis Crowley, for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100701/loco-about-location-or-just-plain-crazy">comparing you to the Kool-Aid pitcher</a> dude.)</p>
<p>In any case, the elegant Flipboard&#8211;which McCue recently told me in an onstage interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin had zero revenues thus far&#8211;has changed the game on the consumption of social media.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In this offering, there are pull quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of linked-out content. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on Twitter or Facebook.</p>
<p>Flipboard has since added a number of features and will be launching its new iPhone app later this year.</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see who will jump into this leader in a nascent market, besides its current investors. Sources said one likely target group for Flipboard could be a large traditional media company.</p>

<p>Recently, BoomTown took a walk down digital Memory Lane with Bob Lisbonne, CEO of Pixazza, the photo-tagging service that has nicknamed itself &#8220;AdSense for images.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Lisbonne used to be a big wheel at Netscape Communications, the iconic Internet browser company that truly changed the digital world&#8211;before crashing and burning in a very public way.</p>
<p>We talked about the old days, of course, but more about the new days and his business focused on putting all kinds of advertising within online images.</p>
<p>The Mountain View, CA, start-up&#8211;which is backed by Google Ventures, CMEA Ventures, August Capital, Foundation Capital and Shasta Ventures, as well as by angel investors Ron Conway, Gideon Yu and Maynard Webb&#8211; aims to do for Web photos what the search giant did for text.</p>
<p>At least that&#8217;s the hope.</p>
<p>Pixazza is selling itself as a win-win for online publishers&#8211;who certainly could use one.</p>
<p>Essentially, the company lets publishers match and link images of products or places with its network of advertisers, via a single line of code.</p>
<p>When users on that site mouse over the photos, they get rich information about pricing and more, as well as a clickable way to purchase the items.</p>
<p>Quite possibly annoying, but Pixazza is growing quickly anyway, with the company claiming 20 billion image views per year and reaching 70 million unique visitors a month on sites deploying its technology.</p>
<p>There are rivals in the space, of course, such as GumGum and Vibrant, but Pixazza does come armed with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100719/photo-ad-network-pixazza-rounds-up-another-12-million">$18 million in venture funding</a>, as well as that relationship with Google.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://clovrmedia.com/">Clovr Media</a> has raised $8.3 million in a second round of funding as it sets out to build a new type of loyalty program that links a user’s credit card to a coupon displayed in a banner ad.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3459" title="clovr_logo" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/clovr_logo-275x94.gif" alt="" width="275" height="94" />The idea piggy-backs on other loyalty programs already in the market, such as those of credit card companies that offer discounts when customers visit certain hotels or rental car companies.</p>
<p>But with Clovr&#8217;s platform, advertisers and brands can enable consumers to associate coupons directly with a credit card.</p>
<p>For instance, a banner ad could offer a 10 percent discount to an electronics store. Instead of printing out a coupon, the user can opt to link the deal to a credit card. The discount is activated only if the consumer uses that credit card at the register.</p>
<p>Since coming out of stealth mode late last year, Clovr has been fine-tuning its approach to the market.</p>
<p>Initially, it envisioned working directly with banks to make the service available to customers. But since advertisers want a large audience to target, the company&#8217;s co-founder and CEO Tom Burgess said today, the company realized it had to make the platform more widely available.</p>
<p>To that end, it partnered with credit card processing companies to enable 99 percent of debit or credit card holders in the country to participate in the offers. Burgess said that Clovr is now entering beta and that its first offers will start appearing in May when it is commercially available.</p>
<p>Clovr is part of a new market that is leveraging old technology called Card Linked Offers, or CLOs for short.</p>
<p>Coincidentally, one of Clovr&#8217;s biggest competitors is also being backed by someone Burgess knows all too well.</p>

Investors include Kleiner Perkins Caufield &amp; Byers, Ron Conway and Omar Hamoui.</p>
<p>Hamoui was the founder of AdMob, the mobile advertising company purchased by Google for $750 million in 2009. And Burgess was the founder of Third Screen Media, a mobile ad network that was acquired by AOL in 2007.</p>
<p>Today, Offermatic is Burgess&#8217; West Coast competitor, much like AdMob was his West Coast competitor when both he and Hamoui were executives in the mobile advertising space.</p>
<p>A third company competing in the space is Atlanta-based <a href="http://www.cardlytics.com/">Cardlytics</a>.</p>
<p>Burgess said there&#8217;s one main difference between Clovr and Offermatic. Clovr is a platform that any ad network can use. It does not have a sales team and is not offering deals directly to consumers.</p>
<p>Offermatic launched its beta in December, and sends discounts to consumers based on their spending history. Similarly, it links a consumer&#8217;s credit and debit cards to its system so that people receive the discount automatically.</p>
<p>To be sure, all three companies are trying to solve the problem of low redemption rates of physical coupons or vouchers.</p>
<p>Clovr&#8217;s second round of funding was led by Bain Capital Ventures. Clovr Media seed investors <a href="http://www.kephapartners.com/" target="_blank">Kepha Partners</a> and <a href="http://www.commonangels.com/" target="_blank">Common Angels</a> also participated. In total, the company has raised nearly $10 million.</p>
