<p>In a move that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120403/yahoos-layoffs-tomorrow-morning-of-up-to-2000-will-only-be-the-first-move-of-a-larger-purge-to-come/"><strong>AllThingsD</strong> had previously reported was coming</a>, Yahoo said it had laid off 2,000 employees, or 14 percent of the workforce.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s actions are an important next step toward a bold, new Yahoo! &#8212; smaller, nimbler, more profitable and better equipped to innovate as fast as our customers and our industry require,&#8221; said Yahoo CEO Scott Thompson in a statement. &#8220;Unfortunately, reaching that goal requires the tough decision to eliminate positions.&#8221;</p>
<p>While Yahoo has had periodic layoffs over the years, this one is its most significant in its history, and will also result in another large-scale restructuring of the management organization. More cuts are also likely to follow in the months ahead, due to the reshaping of Yahoo.</p>
<p>The latest employee action is being pushed by Thompson, who joined the Silicon Valley Internet giant in January from eBay&#8217;s PayPal unit. </p>
<p>&#8220;Change is never easy,&#8221; he wrote in an internal email to Yahoo employees (it is below in its entirety), in a well-worn cliché I am dead certain few appreciated hearing today from the top leader.</p>
<p>At an internal meeting with top staff last night, Thompson &#8212; who has gotten what seems to be a well-deserved reputation for chewing folks out at Yahoo &#8212; was more direct with the execs gathered, berating them extensively for not delivering and getting the company to this sorry point.</p>
<p><em>Ouch, Scott!</em> It&#8217;s Easter, so it might be time for some forgiveness. (And no more ranting about my reporting to those inside Yahoo, since I have been 100 percent accurate so far. FYI, will aim for 110 percent next week!)  </p>
<p>Yahoo said it will save about $375 million with the cuts, incurring a $125 to $145 million pretax cash charge for employee severance in its second quarter. Before the cuts, Yahoo had 14,000 staffers and has many thousands more hired as contractors.</p>
<p>The layoffs touch all units of the company, but the hardest hit is the product division, which is headed by Blake Irving, as well as its marketing, research and international units. Yahoo gave no details on the layoffs other than the number.</p>
<p>But the fate of two key parts of the soon-to-be-blown-apart unit &#8212; Yahoo&#8217;s advertising technology businesses, Right Media and APT, and its search business &#8212; is still being contemplated, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120314/to-stanch-layoffs-yahoo-has-been-shopping-its-ad-technology-platforms-to-google-microsoft-and-others/">as I have previously reported</a>. Possible scenarios include a sale or a joint venture transaction for both, which employ thousands of Yahoo staffers.</p>
<p>The layoffs tomorrow are not the end of the road in cutting costs. Along with the likely shedding of its ad tech and search businesses, Yahoo leadership is also looking at future cuts as it evaluates current businesses, which could lop even more employees off its roster.</p>
<p>That said, Yahoo will be doubling down in some older and new arenas, so there would also be simultaneous hiring in the months ahead.</p>
<p>As wrenching as they will be today at Yahoo, the layoffs come as no surprise. Thompson had told employees in memos and also in recent meetings that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120315/ceo-thompson-tells-yahoos-real-change-is-coming-its-exclusive-internal-memo-time/">&#8220;real change&#8221;</a> was coming to the company.</p>
<p>Along with the trauma of the layoffs, Yahoo is also facing two other tense face-offs externally. In one, activist shareholder Third Point is waging a proxy fight for board seats and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120402/third-point-launches-value-yahoo-blog-which-does-not-value-current-leadership/">stepped up the public pressure</a> this week; and Facebook struck back hard at Yahoo&#8217;s patent lawsuit with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120403/breaking-facebook-smacks-at-yahoo-with-patent-claims-of-its-own/">counterclaim of its own</a>.</p>
<p>After the layoffs tomorrow, sources say Yahoo will be announcing a new organization by next week. Thompson, along with outside consultants he has hired from the Boston Consulting Group, are making what appear to be profound changes.</p>
<p>Sources said that Yahoo will most likely be comprised of a global media division, one that encompasses Yahoo&#8217;s consumer products businesses and one focused on global and regional sales. There could also be a small organization of about 50 employees aimed at future innovation.</p>
<p>Americas head Ross Levinsohn is pegged to run the media arm, which will also include its leads/commerce businesses, such as autos; Shashi Seth &#8212; who now heads search and marketplaces &#8212; is likely to run consumer products, which will include Yahoo&#8217;s communications and search businesses.</p>
<p>Yahoo has already been conducting a search for a new worldwide sales head, who will also be boss of the U.S., Asia and Europe, Middle East and Africa sales regions. Rich Riley, who was recently running EMEA, is reportedly the pick for U.S. sales; Rose Tsou, who is running Asia, would presumably stay put; Yahoo is looking for an EMEA sales lead.</p>
<p>Some current operational execs &#8212; such as service engineering and ops head David Dibble, CFO Tim Morse, and top lawyer Mike Callahan &#8212; are likely to continue to operate as before.</p>
<p>One big question mark is how Chief Product Officer Irving fits in the possible new org, in which the new units get control of their product development. Irving has reportedly had several incoming job offers, although it is not clear if he has responded to that interest. </p>
<p>But today, the focus is on the layoffs and letting go all those employees, many of whom have worked at Yahoo for years. Even if it will result in a stronger Yahoo, as Thompson promises, it is still a very sad day in Sunnyvale.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120330/yahoo-layoffs-set-to-begin-next-week-followed-by-restructuring-the-week-after/">massive round of layoffs</a> &#8212; which is likely to impact up to 2,000 employees &#8212; is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg that will hit the storied Silicon Valley Internet giant in the months to come.</p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo is currently planning to announce the cuts in staff in the early morning, just as the markets open. That could change, of course, but the cuts will definitely occur within the next two days.</p>
<p>The layoffs, which will touch all units of the company, are expected to hit hardest in the product division, which is headed by Blake Irving. </p>

<p>That is indeed the case, which is causing massive strain throughout the company, which now employs over 14,000 and has many thousands more hired as contractors.</p>
<p>Along with the trauma of the layoffs, Yahoo is also facing two other tense face-offs externally. In one, activist shareholder Third Point is waging a proxy fight for board seats and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120402/third-point-launches-value-yahoo-blog-which-does-not-value-current-leadership/">stepped up the public pressure</a> this week; and Facebook struck back hard at Yahoo&#8217;s patent lawsuit with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120403/breaking-facebook-smacks-at-yahoo-with-patent-claims-of-its-own/">counter-claim of its own</a>.</p>

<p>After the layoffs tomorrow, sources say Yahoo will be announcing a new organization by next week, which will create several major, soup-to-nuts units at the company. Thompson, along with consultants he has hired from the Boston Consulting Group, are making what appear to be profound changes.</p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo will most likely be comprised of a global media division, one that encompasses Yahoo&#8217;s consumer products businesses and one focused on global and regional sales. There could also be a small organization of about 50 employees aimed at future innovation.</p>
<p>Americas head Ross Levinsohn is pegged to run the media arm, which will also include its leads/commerce businesses, such as autos; Shashi Seth &#8212; who now heads search and marketplaces &#8212; is likely to run consumer products, which will include Yahoo&#8217;s communications and search businesses.</p>
<p>Yahoo has already been conducting a search for a new worldwide sales head, who will also be boss of the U.S., Asia and Europe, Middle East and Africa sales regions. Rich Riley, who was recently running EMEA, is reportedly the pick for U.S. sales; Rose Tsou, who is running Asia, would presumably stay put; Yahoo is looking for an EMEA sales lead. </p>
<p>Some current operational execs &#8212; such as service engineering and ops head David Dibble, CFO Tim Morse, and top lawyer Mike Callahan &#8212; are likely to continue to operate as before.</p>
<p>One big question mark is how Chief Product Officer Irving fits in the possible new org, in which the new units get control of their product development. Irving has reportedly had several incoming job offers, although it is not clear if he has responded to that interest. </p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope that Yahoos who will be let go tomorrow find themselves with many new employment choices after the ax falls.</p>

<p>Yahoo&#8217;s massive product unit is readying a major reorganization, which will include a new structure, a move that is being spearheaded by its Chief Product Officer, Blake Irving.</p>
<p>But the ground under Irving, as well as several of the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s top execs, is about to get shakier too, due to a wide range of changes now being plotted by newly installed CEO Scott Thompson.</p>
<p>While still in the early stages of formulation, sources said Thompson has been mulling bringing in a head of global advertising sales or revenue chief, as well as more top product execs, as he moves to initiate a plan to shake up Yahoo and also put his own stamp on the company.</p>
<p>Layoffs and possible wholesale abandonment of certain businesses Yahoo is currently in are likely to be parts of this larger plan.</p>
<p>Confused yet? So am I, but let&#8217;s sort through all the latest activity.</p>
<p>First, there&#8217;s the Yahoo product redo, which has been in the making for a while, well before Thompson arrived last month. </p>
<p>Under the new plan, which is described as &#8220;an evolution rather than blowing up the place,&#8221; Yahoo&#8217;s famously matrixed product unit could be split into three distinct areas: Monetization, which is expected to be headed by longtime exec Mark Morrissey; platform, with cloud dude Jay Rossiter in charge; and consumer-facing products, possibly in the hands of search kingpin Shashi Seth.</p>
<p>The idea behind the latest setup, presumably, is to spur innovation and make it easier for Yahoo to spit out products more quickly. Its recent Livestand tablet app, for example, was late to the game and continues to struggle to gain any real ground, said sources.</p>
<p>Overall, Yahoo still continues to lag behind other Internet rivals in a number of product arenas, for reasons that Thompson is delving into.</p>
<p>The way products are made got a long look-see this past week, in a day-long meeting that Thompson had with Yahoo&#8217;s top team execs. Thompson reportedly quizzed the group on its plans, and pressed it to look less at short-term features and maintenance than on finding the next great thing.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s fair to say that Scott is wondering why Yahoo did not come up with innovations like Pinterest and Instagram,&#8221; said one person about hot new start-ups that are in the sweet spot of Yahoo&#8217;s business. &#8220;Or, at the very least, why it did not even try to buy them.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120212/yahoo-product-unit-readies-major-exec-reorg-but-its-just-a-tremor-for-the-big-one-to-come/470px-japanese_road_sign_way_narrowssvg/" rel="attachment wp-att-173775"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/470px-japanese_road_sign_way_narrowssvg-285x285.png" alt="" title="470px-japanese_road_sign_way_narrowssvg" width="285" height="285" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-173775" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s why Thompson, with the help of board members, including David Kenny, has been on the hunt for new talent for Yahoo. That includes a search that is on for a new head of marketing, too. </p>
<p>Thompson has been doing the same kind of assessment with Yahoo&#8217;s media and advertising execs, who include Americas head Ross Levinsohn, as well as Asia&#8217;s Rose Tsou, and Rich Riley, who heads its efforts in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.</p>
<p>Sources said he believes that Yahoo might need a head of global sales or a chief of revenue to better organize and align its key advertising business. Ad revenues now make up a bulk of Yahoo&#8217;s business.</p>
<p>As Thompson has said numerous times publicly since he came on board, he is seeking to diversify that revenue, focusing on new businesses and also goosing non-ad ones already performing well. In Asia, for example, Yahoo has a robust online commerce business in comparison to other regions. </p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo has to slim down and focus in some ways and bulk up in others,&#8221; said another source.</p>
<p>Of course, all of this might be moot, depending on how <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120209/ready-to-rumble-or-make-nice-activist-shareholder-daniel-loeb-could-strike-sooner-than-yahoo-thinks/">activist shareholder Daniel Loeb</a>, who is prepping his own frontal attack on making changes at Yahoo, decides to move. According to sources, Loeb is assembling his own slate and trying to garner support from other shareholders, in hopes of further improving the value of his more than five percent stake.</p>
<p>What form that will take is unclear, but it&#8217;s not completely friendly at the moment.</p>
<p>In addition, Yahoo execs and its board are trying to wrap up a deal to sell off parts of its Asian assets in Alibaba Group and Yahoo Japan, part of a massive arrangement that could bring many billions of dollars of assets and cash into the core company that is left. </p>
<p>Which could then make Yahoo more able to compete, and give Thompson a war chest to do so &#8212; <em>or</em> make it an even tastier treat for a wide range of outside investors looking for a deal.</p>
<p>Like I said: Confused yet?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang said on Thursday that the company&#8217;s board continues its strategic review process, but that there are a number of options beyond just selling the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;The intent going in is not to put ourselves for sale,&#8221; Yang said, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111019/jerry-yang-rose-tsou-asia/">speaking at <strong>AsiaD</strong></a>. &#8220;The intent is to look at all the options.&#8221;</p>

<p>And while selling the company as a whole is one option, Yang noted that the company is made up of three key parts &#8212; its core business, its stakes in Yahoo Japan (along with Softbank) and its share of Alibaba.</p>
<p>Asked what he would personally like to see happen with the company, Yang said his goal is just to see Yahoo reach its potential.</p>
<p>&#8220;There are many ways of creating that environment,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So far, we have not ruled out any possibilities.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yang acknowledged that Wall Street now looks at the company&#8217;s Asian stakes as a significant part of its market value. &#8220;They are looking at a core asset that they don&#8217;t know how to value.&#8221;</p>
<p>As for that core business, Yang insisted that the company remains a premier digital media company, despite its challenges.</p>
<p>&#8220;We ought to be growing, can be growing,&#8221; Yang said, insisting the company has a great brand and 700 million monthly users. &#8220;We really do believe there is a path for Yahoo that can be better and higher growth.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the same time, Yang noted the company is also looking for a new CEO, an effort being led by an independent committee of the board.</p>
<p>&#8220;As these things go there is no CEO until there is a CEO, but the process has started,&#8221; Yang said.</p>
<p>In search, Yang acknowledged that the Microsoft partnership has been bumpy for both sides.</p>
<p>&#8220;I would probably venture that the Microsoft folks would say the partnership hasn&#8217;t gone the way they wanted,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But Yang said he is hopeful it will yet reach its goals.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think Microsoft is a very, very important partner for us,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think both sides recognize this is a partnership that has to work over time.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yang noted that Microsoft has a lot of good people working on search &#8212; many of whom he noted used to work at Yahoo.</p>
<p>&#8220;It takes trial and error,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It takes work.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-134390" title="yangasiad" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/10/yangasiad.png" alt="" width="380" height="285" />When Yahoo co-founder <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/jerry-yang/">Jerry Yang</a> last appeared on the <strong>D</strong> stage back in 2008, the Internet giant was in tumult. Tapped as successor to former CEO Terry Semel and the man who would finally turn Yahoo&#8217;s fundamental strengths into healthy financial performance, Yang was already having a tough time of it. Yahoo continued to struggle and Yang&#8217;s tenure as CEO had already been threatened with an unsolicited takeover bid by Microsoft. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081117/yahoos-jerry-yang-to-step-down-as-a-search-for-new-ceo-commences/">In November of that year, he stepped down as CEO</a>, to be succeeded a few months later by former Autodesk CEO Carol Bartz &#8212; who would have a longer, but similarly troubled tenure leading the company until <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/exclusive-carol-bartz-out-at-yahoo-cfo-interim-ceo/">her ouster</a> in September of 2011.</p>
<p>Doggedly committed to the company he co-founded, Yang joins us today as a Yahoo director &#8212; ironically, one facing many of the same obstacles that confronted him back in 2008. One bright light amid the darkness: Yahoo&#8217;s massive and successful business interests Asia, currently overseen by Senior VP <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/rose-tsou/">Rose Tsou</a>, who joins Yang on the <strong>D</strong> stage today.</p>
<p><strong>7:57 am</strong>: Good morning from Hong Kong. Yahoo&#8217;s Jerry Yang and Rose Tsou will be on stage shortly.</p>
<p>In the meantime, I can report that we&#8217;re playing Stray Cats in the ballroom here at the Grand Hyatt.</p>

<p><strong>8:03 am</strong>: And here&#8217;s Walt Mossberg. (Who walks onstage to Van Halen)</p>
<p>Walt delivers an update on Kara. She&#8217;s doing just fine, as you can tell if you follow her <a href="http://twitter.com/#!/karaswisher">Twitter account</a>.</p>
<p>Walt starts out with a <strong>D</strong> tribute to Steve Jobs. &#8220;I personally believe he&#8217;s a historical figure. Somebody who will be remembered alongside Ford and Edison.&#8221;</p>
<p>Walt talks about Jobs agreeing to come to the first <strong>D</strong> conference, and four more following. The last year, &#8220;he looked extremely frail &#8212; I think a lot of people were concerned.&#8221; And then he spoke with great vigor for an hour and a half.</p>
<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s been a terrific supporter of <strong>AllThingsD</strong>. That doesn&#8217;t mean he wouldn&#8217;t complain. That doesn&#8217;t mean he wouldn&#8217;t try to get us not to talk about things, and we would say no, and he would knock it out of the park anyway.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:08 am</strong>: And now, Jerry Yang and Rose Tsou.</p>
<p>Some discussion of Kara&#8217;s health and great affection for writing about Yahoo. Walt notes that Kara filed a couple Yahoo stories while en route to the hospital Wednesday.</p>
<p><strong>8:10 am</strong>: Walt: Tell us about the status of the CEO search.</p>
<p>Jerry: There&#8217;s a search and a search committee. &#8220;I think the board is pretty excited about the prospects, about the way we can invigorate the company, and the search process is one of them.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking at all the options, both for Yahoo, and a prospective CEO.</p>
<p><strong>8:12 am</strong>: Walt: How do you look for a CEO while you&#8217;re putting yourself up for sale?</p>
<p>Jerry: &#8220;The board works for the shareholders, and anything that benefits the shareholders, the board has to listen to.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:13 am</strong>: So what are some of the real options: A sale, and what else?</p>
<p>Jerry: Yahoo has a great core business &#8220;and I feel like we&#8217;re making great progress.&#8221; Great brand, 700 million users, etc. &#8220;It is the thing that everybody is looking at, and saying, &#8220;how do we invigorate growth around that?&#8221;</p>
<p>And we have investments with Softbank in Yahoo Japan, and here in China with Alibaba. Very valuable.</p>
<p><strong>8:14 am</strong>: Walt: That&#8217;s the most important asset, according to Wall Street.</p>
<p>Jerry: Yes, there are plenty of options.</p>
<p>Walt: But you need to decide what you are. Last time you were here in 2008, I asked you and Sue Decker &#8220;what is Yahoo&#8221;? And to be honest, you guys had a lot of answers, but not a crisp answer, like Steve Ballmer or Steve Jobs or Larry Page would have.</p>

<p>So let&#8217;s try another version. &#8220;Why should 700 million keep going to Yahoo?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:16 am</strong>: Jerry: Everyone who works at Yahoo gets what we want to do &#8212; &#8220;we want to be the premier digital media company.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:16 am</strong>: Walt: Are you that now? Because I think people might say YouTube, or Apple, or Amazon&#8230;</p>
<p>Jerry: Yes.</p>
<p>Walt: Really?</p>
<p>Jerry: Sure.</p>
<p>Walt: Give me examples. </p>
<p>Jerry: You can watch videos, for instance, we&#8217;ve also got news, finance, sports, entertainment. &#8220;We&#8217;re probably category leaders across the spectrum, in different regions.&#8221; Yahoo Mail is big.</p>
<p>Walt: But hasn&#8217;t Yahoo Mail gone down?</p>
<p>Jerry: Yes, people think Yahoo Mail is declining, but the number of messages is up, engagement is up. Web-based mail is being replaced by mobile and other devices. But the fundamental back-end proposition that we offer is stronger than ever.</p>
<p><strong>8:18 am</strong>: Rose: People come for Yahoo news, or finance, and they discover other stuff, like videos. A couple of weeks ago, we launched a premium video consumption site in the U.S. In India, where there&#8217;s low-bandwidth access, video and entertainment are very big for us.</p>
<p>Providers want to be on our platform, because of our reach, all over the world.</p>
<p><strong>8:20 am</strong>: Walt: Jerry, do you have all the Hollywood and big media deals you need to make this happen?</p>
<p>Jerry: If you look at the media part, we&#8217;ve evolved from being a pure aggregation play to &#8220;having a voice.&#8221; We&#8217;re creating &#8220;color&#8221; around other people&#8217;s stuff, and we&#8217;re making our own. Like last week, when we were the exclusive streamer for the Bill Clinton concert.</p>
<p>Yahoo Sports &#8220;is a very well-known service in the United States that routinely breaks news now.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>8:21 am</strong>: Walt: Do you need to move more into video, etc.? Sports is big for you but you can&#8217;t watch sports on Yahoo.</p>
<p>Jerry: At the end of the day, if you look at what Yahoo&#8217;s been for past 15, 16 years, the part we have to sharpen is distributing content for our partners. Outside the U.S., we&#8217;ll definitely be distributing TV. In the U.S., less of that, but note our (most recent) partnership with ABC News.</p>

<p>In Silicon Valley there&#8217;s one view. But the reality is Yahoo is doing lots of those things.</p>
<p><strong>8:23 am</strong>: Walt: Back to the review. What&#8217;s the best outcome. Would it be best if Jack Ma bought the whole thing?</p>
<p>Jerry: You&#8217;d have to ask him.</p>
<p>Walt: I&#8217;m asking you.</p>
<p>Jerry: As the founder, &#8220;the true ambition for me is to see Yahoo achieve the potential it&#8217;s in the position to achieve.&#8221;</p>
<p>I think that&#8217;s what the board and management are trying to do.</p>
<p>Walt: So can an entrepreneur like Jack make that happen?</p>
<p>Jerry: We&#8217;re looking at everything.</p>
<p>Walt: Do you want to be in the hands of a PE company?</p>
<p>Jerry: I don&#8217;t know, Walt. I think all of the options will work themselves out.</p>
<p><strong>8:25 am</strong>: Walt: OK. The Microsoft deal, where at one point they were going to buy you, and then it became a search deal. It seems like it hasn&#8217;t caught fire and done as much for you as you&#8217;d hoped.</p>
<p>Jerry: &#8220;I think Microsoft is a very very important partner for us.&#8221; We&#8217;ve extended our revenue guarantee. But we both realize this has to work for both sides. &#8220;It takes trial and error. It takes work. I will probably venture that the Microsoft folks would say the partnership hasn&#8217;t gone the way they wanted.&#8221;</p>
<p>Walt: Meanwhile other people keep nudging into search. Even Apple&#8217;s Siri can represent search.</p>
<p>Jerry: Our focus is simple. We can control the way our users conduct a search. We&#8217;ve gotten very good at that. Microsoft is responsible for the back end, and for monetization. And the core focus is monetization. So there will be innovation about the way you find search, and define search, but really the core focus is on monetization, and we can&#8217;t help Microsoft much with that.</p>
<p><strong>8:29 am</strong>: Walt: Rose, let&#8217;s talk about Asia. How important is Asia to Yahoo and consumers as a whole?</p>
<p>Rose: Very important! And growing! Between southeast Asia and India, in the next three years, there will be 100 million users coming online.</p>
<p>Walt: Primarily through mobile, right?</p>
<p>Rose: Yep. And not the smartphone we&#8217;re used to, but the $50 feature phone.</p>

<p>Walt: But as you know, smartphones will get even cheaper.</p>
<p>Rose: Yes, and a $100 feature phone now functions much like a smartphone.</p>
<p>Walt: So are you building features for that market segment?</p>
<p>Rose: Absolutely. For starters, we have to make sure media and communication products render well on those phones. And then we have to work on discoverability. People have to find your services. So we do a lot of partnership deals with chipset deals, and handset manufacturers, for instance.</p>
<p>Walt: How does a chipset deal help media discovery?</p>
<p>Rose: Great question. For example, we did a deal with a chip company so the media discoverability is sort of baked into the middleware. So when they pass on the chips to handset makers, it&#8217;s that much easier. In the feature phone market, lots of local makers are very happy to have brands like Yahoo baked onto the chipset market. We&#8217;ve gotten great feedback from manufacturers in India, Indonesia, China.</p>
<p><strong>8:34 am</strong>: Walt: Jerry, there was a good story in the Asian WSJ the other day, tied to Steve Jobs&#8217;s death. It wanted to know about the Steve Jobs of China, and whether China was able to harness the energy and wonderful companies and services you have here, &#8220;but a lot of it is considered derivative&#8221; &#8212; they iterate on ideas that originate in the U.S. or elsewhere. Jerry, &#8220;what&#8217;s the deal there?&#8221; Do you think that&#8217;s right? When will China &#8220;startle the U.S.&#8221; by thinking up its own stuff?</p>
<p>Jerry: Two sides to that. I&#8217;m an optimist about China and Asia. &#8220;It&#8217;s just a matter of time&#8230; before true innovation comes. Now, it&#8217;s just not fair comparing it to Steve. He&#8217;s rare even for the U.S.&#8221;</p>
<p>Walt: I know. But he did lots of great world-changing things, and it&#8217;d be nice if a Chinese entreprenuer did one.</p>
<p><strong>8:37 am</strong>: Jerry: &#8220;This is a statistics and probability question.&#8221; The number of people with technical training, and a Western education and understanding of how platforms work, and experience. Even compared to 10 years ago, management has so much more experience.</p>
<p>Still, there are challenges. &#8220;This is not a foregone conclusion.&#8221; There&#8217;s a question about how does media censorship affect creativity and entrepreneurial spirit. We don&#8217;t know yet.</p>
<p><strong>8:39 am</strong>: Walt: I&#8217;m sure you remember that 20 years ago, it seemed like Japan was going to surpass the U.S., and there was a lot of government organization around that. But it didn&#8217;t happen.</p>
<p>Jerry: Please understand. &#8220;I&#8217;m not saying that China is going to overtake the U.S.&#8221; &#8212; there&#8217;s still a tremendous amount of advantage that Silicon Valley, or New York, or whatever, has with entrepreneurial culture, etc.</p>
<p><strong>8:40 am</strong>: Rose: It&#8217;s harder to do breakthrough stuff here because the market is really big, and the competition is really fierce. &#8220;So I think there is less risk-taking, in going about doing something that&#8217;s never been proven elsewhere.&#8221; It&#8217;s more natural to see what works somewhere else, and replicate that.</p>
<p>Walt: Like those fake Apple stores they have in China.</p>
<p>Rose: Yep. On the other hand, the speed of iteration they have here is amazing. So they take a concept from the West, but they move so fast, that soon it&#8217;s a different thing.</p>

<p><strong>8:42 am</strong>: Q&#038;A:</p>
<p>Q: As you look at what Yahoo could be, what are the one or two key areas that it could go after to truly transform itself?</p>
<p>Jerry: We&#8217;re really focused on trying to &#8220;turn Yahoo inside out.&#8221; We do a huge amount of services internally: Data, content, personalization. Lots of other people on the Web around the world could use that. </p>
<p>Also, there are going to be multiple platforms: iOS, Android, maybe Microsoft. And we have to be able to play on all of them. And that&#8217;s an opportunity for people like us, who can distribute a large amount of content and services.</p>
<p>But this &#8220;inside out&#8221; idea is a big one.</p>
<p><strong>8:45 am</strong>: Q: (via Eric Jackson): Your media answer reminds me of your vision 10 years ago, with Terry Semel, and Lloyd Braun, etc., that you backed down from. What did you learn then and how is that affecting what you&#8217;re doing now?</p>
<p>Jerry: The realization is &#8220;that we have to continue to disrupt ourselves in terms of how we distribute.&#8221; So just publishing on Web pages and HTML, and don&#8217;t pay attention to apps, and mobile, and social media, and we&#8217;re not being disruptive, then that won&#8217;t work. People think that media means you have to stream or pipe data. But it can be more than that. Ten years ago, we didn&#8217;t really focus on that disruptive element &#8212; &#8220;we just tried to put TV on the Internet.&#8221; And some of that worked, but some of that didn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>And we&#8217;re done &#8212; though as Jerry walks off stage, he tells Walt &#8220;I passed.&#8221;</p>

<p>So why Asia? It seemed the most obvious choice for us, as we looked at the global landscape for tech. While the whole world has now been engulfed in the powerful trends of digitalization, perhaps nowhere else has been as important a place for understanding where it is headed next than this region, which is home to companies critical to the next phase of innovation.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no question that Silicon Valley, which has been the base for most of the key players &#8212; such as Google, Apple, Facebook and more &#8212; has driven the digital revolution over the past decade. But as we look out onto what&#8217;s to come, it&#8217;s clear to us and many others that what&#8217;s coming next and even the next great company might be born here.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why we have created a conference that mixes both important speakers from U.S. tech and also from all over Asia. </p>
<p>Given that smartphones are in ascendance globally, having <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/andy-rubin/">Andy Rubin</a>, who runs Google&#8217;s Android efforts, is a no-brainer. The longtime mobile exec is at the top of an aggressive push by the Internet giant to dominate the important sector across the world.</p>
<p>Speaking of domination, Alibaba Group&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/jack-ma/">Jack Ma</a> efforts to make the company a powerhouse in China and elsewhere are hard to ignore. His recent tussle and interest in Yahoo, as he has built a wide-ranging Internet giant, should make for an interesting interview.</p>
<p>Expect a deep dive into what makes the future Web work with Twitter and Square founder <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/jack-dorsey/">Jack Dorsey</a>, who is someone breaking new ground as he tears down old digital paradigms. With Twitter, Dorsey redefined the real-time world and how the virtual one communicates; with Square, he is upending the payments arena.</p>
<p>Nvidia is not only a pioneer of graphics chips, but now its processors are widely used in the latest mobile devices. That&#8217;s why its founder and CEO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/jen-hsun-huang/">Jen-Hsun Huang</a> has a lot to say about the future of the fastest-growing sector of computing, from smartphones to tablets and whatever&#8217;s next.</p>
<p>Asus Chairman <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/jonney-shih/">Jonney Shih</a> has presided over the Taiwanese tech giant since the early 1990s. Most recently, the company pioneered the netbook market and is now plunging deeply into the tablet business, making Shih perfect to discuss these key issues in Asia and around the world.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/kazuo-hirai/">Kazuo &#8220;Kaz&#8221; Hirai</a> is widely considered the second in command at the consumer electronics giant Sony, in charge of its key computer entertainment division, as well as now serving as executive deputy president of the whole company. As Sony struggles to reassert its dominance in tech, Hirai will be a key player in that effort.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/bradley-horowitz/">Bradley Horowitz</a> &#8212; as head of product management for Google+, the search giant’s aggressive effort to break Facebook’s hammerlock on social networking &#8212; has a perfect perspective to talk about the fast-growing area and where it is going globally. With locally-based social companies springing up all over Asia, can Google establish one the whole world will use? </p>
<p>At Microsoft, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/andy-lees/">Andy Lees</a> is leading one of the software giant&#8217;s most important initiatives, as president of its Windows Phone division. His come-from-behind-Google-and-Apple job includes mobile software and hardware, as well as its key partnership with Nokia, and Lees will need to win in markets globally, especially in Asia.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/peter-chernin/">Peter Chernin</a> is one of Hollywood&#8217;s top players and execs. But he&#8217;s also been increasingly active in media investing in Asia of late, and has a lot to say about the global nature of entertainment in the digital age.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/john-roese/">John Roese</a> heads the North American R&amp;D team for Huawei, the Chinese telecom giant making everything from heavy-duty gear for networks to mobile phones and tablets. Roese will also talk about the phenomenon of a Chinese-owned company emerging on the world technology stage.</p>
<p>We also felt that it was important to hear from Silicon Valley start-ups, which have enjoyed unprecedented growth and funding in the Web 2.0 era. But as they seek to expand beyond the U.S., a critical move for them all, we&#8217;ve assembled a panel of entrepreneurs to discuss it, including: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/brian-chesky/">Brian Chesky</a>, CEO and co-founder of Airbnb, the popular online vacation rental site; former Google exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/sukhinder-singh-cassidy/">Sukhinder Singh Cassidy</a>, who is running the recently funded Joyus, a new premium video commerce site trying to pioneer a new way to shop online; and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/dave-goldberg/">David Goldberg</a>, who is now running one of tech&#8217;s most successful start-ups at SurveyMonkey, the dominant online survey company.</p>
<p>Yahoo co-founder and former CEO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/jerry-yang/">Jerry Yang</a>, who will appear with the Internet giant&#8217;s Asia head <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/rose-tsou/">Rose Tsou</a>, needs little introduction. For all of the noise around the company these days, Yahoo has a huge footprint in the region, maintains a big e-commerce business there and holds massive stakes in key firms, such as Yahoo Japan and China’s Alibaba. </p>
<p>And so does LivingSocial, whose CEO and co-founder <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/tim-oshaughnessy/">Tim O’Shaughnessy</a>, who will appear along with founders of two of its Asian units, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/daniel-shin/">Daniel Shin</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/paul-srivorakul/">Paul Srivorakul</a>, which the daily deals site just bought as part of its aggressive move into Asia.</p>
<p>Because of Samsung&#8217;s increasing importance as a global player in smartphones and tablets, it was natural to invite <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/dr-won-pyo-hong/">Dr. Won-Pyo Hong</a>, who heads global product strategy for the Korean giant&#8217;s mobile business. That has surged in the past year to make Samsung a leader in Android-based phones and tablets, and a significant challenger to Apple.</p>
<p>Also key in the mobile arena is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/cher-wang/">Cher Wang</a>, chairman of HTC, the important and innovative handset and tablet maker which has been a key player in Android&#8217;s success story. Add to that HTC buying an operating system, which would further strengthen its hand in the competitive market, and it&#8217;s clear it is in a pole position on the critical mobile market going forward.</p>
<p>Finally, we are also glad to bring back <a href="http://allthingsd.com/tag/al-gore/">Al Gore</a>, who had a memorable interview at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in 2006. The former VP and Nobel Peace Prize winner is now chairman of Current TV and also continues as a prominent environmental activist. He is also on the board of Apple, while also being a senior adviser to Google, as well as a partner in the famed Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins. </p>
<p>In total, along with some very cool demos to show off, it&#8217;s going to be an exciting <strong>AsiaD</strong>, and we are thrilled most of all to welcome our first international audience. So get ready for a busy three days here and we hope you will like what we have to show you.</p>

<p>That would be Apple&#8217;s SVP of worldwide product marketing <strong>Phil Schiller</strong> and former Vice President <strong>Al Gore</strong>, who round out the stellar list of speakers at our upcoming <strong>AsiaD</strong> conference.</p>
<p>Taking place from Oct. 19 to 21 in Hong Kong, the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110809/more-asiad-speakers-sony-google-microsoft-hollywood-huawei-and-hot-sv-start-ups/?refcat=asiad">lineup is already impressive</a>, with a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110912/even-more-asiad-speakers-yahoos-yang-htcs-wang-samsungs-hong-and-more/">mix of speakers</a> from China, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, as well as Silicon Valley and elsewhere.</p>

<p>Schiller, who reports to Apple&#8217;s CEO Tim Cook (and before that, Steve Jobs) is a member of the executive team of the tech icon, where he has worked for 17 years. He is responsible for a swath of Apple&#8217;s outward-facing businesses, including product marketing, developer relations and business marketing. </p>
<p>Today, in fact, he was onstage at Apple&#8217;s iPhone event, outlining some of its new product offerings. In addition, Apple just opened its first retail store in Hong Kong. </p>
<p>Gore, who had a memorable interview at the fourth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in 2006, needs little introduction. The former VP and Nobel Peace Prize winner is now chairman of Current TV and also continues as a prominent environmental activist. </p>
<p>Gore is on the board of Apple, while also being a senior adviser to Google, which is a neat trick. At the same time, he is a partner in the famed Silicon Valley venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins, and co-founder and chairman of Generation Investment Management, a partnership that is focused on sustainable investing.</p>
<p>And, as most people know, he knows a thing or two about the Internet. </p>
<p>Walt Mossberg and I could not think of two better people to add to the lineup we have for <strong>AsiaD</strong>, which has very few seats left.</p>

<p>With <strong>AsiaD</strong> just a little over a month away, Walt Mossberg and I are adding even more speakers to the list, for what we hope will be an awesome event in Hong Kong.</p>

<p>Yahoo co-founder and former CEO <strong>Jerry Yang</strong>, who will appear with the Internet giant&#8217;s Asia head <strong>Rose Tsou</strong>. For all of the noise around the company these days, Yahoo has a huge footprint in the region, maintains a big e-commerce business there and holds massive stakes in key firms, such as Yahoo Japan and China&#8217;s Alibaba. One of Yahoo&#8217;s first big investments came from Asian investor Masa Son, in fact, way back when.</p>

<p>Also on deck is LivingSocial&#8217;s CEO and co-founder Tim O&#8217;Shaughnessy, who will appear with Daniel Shin, the CEO and co-founder of <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110802/ticket-monsters-daniel-shin-talks-about-sale-of-south-koreas-biggest-deals-site-to-livingsocial-video/">South Korea&#8217;s Ticket Monster</a>, which the daily deals site just bought as part of its aggressive move into Asia. Competing there with its U.S. rival Groupon, as well as a myriad of local social buying services, the market is a tough one.</p>

<p>Because of Samsung&#8217;s increasing importance as a global player in smartphones and tablets, we thought it was important to have Dr. Won-Pyo Hong. He heads global product strategy for Samsung&#8217;s mobile business, which has surged in the past year to make the Korean tech giant a leader in Android-based phones and tablets, and a significant challenger to Apple.</p>

<p>Also key in the mobile arena is Cher Wang, the chairwoman of three Taiwan companies, including HTC, the important and innovative handset and tablet maker which has been a key player in Android&#8217;s success story. But just this week she talked about the possibility of HTC buying an operating system, which would further strengthen its hand in the competitive market.</p>

<p>If you can&#8217;t buy Foursquare&#8211;as Yahoo did not after aggressive efforts to do so&#8211;then&#8230;buy the Indonesian version of it!</p>
<p>BoomTown has to be honest and say I have never heard of <a href="http://www.koprol.com/">Koprol</a>, a Jakarta-based social geolocation service that bears striking similarities to the hot New York-based one Yahoo (YHOO) offered $100 million for recently to no result.</p>
<p>But that&#8217;s just what Yahoo snapped up, announcing the purchase of the mobile-focused start-up for an undisclosed sum tonight.</p>
<p>It is not clear what Yahoo intends to do with the technology from Koprol, but execs called it an emerging-market play.</p>
<p>And, indeed, Koprol could be used to bolster Yahoo &#8220;check-in&#8221; features globally, especially in Asia.</p>
<p>Frankly, Koprol sounds more robust, innovative and fun than Foursquare.</p>
<p>Yahoo already made another splashy mobile announcement today by unveiling a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100524/liveblogging-yahoo-nokia-annoucement/">partnership deal with Finnish handset giant Nokia</a> (NOK).</p>

<p>News was actually committed during <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100126/liveblogging-the-yahoo-fourth-quarter-earnings-call/">Yahoo&#8217;s fourth-quarter earnings conference call</a> today when CEO Carol Bartz noted that the company would disable its irksome &#8220;hover interaction&#8221; on the homepage and that the Internet giant has restructured its international business.</p>
<p>Yahoo (YHOO) reported results earlier today that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100126/yahoo-beats-expectations-in-fourth-quarter-earnings-but-revenue-and-earnings-still-down/">slightly exceeded expectations</a> in the fourth quarter, but it was no blowout.</p>
<p>Said a Yahoo spokeswoman in an email to BoomTown about dumping the hover:</p>
<p>&#8220;We are in the process of making a change to the hover interaction and it should be live in all markets that have the new homepage by late tonight. To give people more control over their experience, we are adding the ability to select from either a &#8216;hover&#8217; or &#8216;click&#8217; interaction for activating previews of apps in the My Favorites section. The default setting will be a click interaction, but people can also use a hover interaction by selecting that option as their default preference. You should see this change on your own homepage very soon.&#8221;</p>
<p>The hover feature, while initially touted as giving users easy access to widgets on the homepage, has been widely decried by advertisers because it essentially covers other ads at the top of the page, which are Yahoo&#8217;s most lucrative inventory.</p>
<p>Also, simply put, the hover is super-annoying.</p>
<p>Back in July when <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots">Yahoo rolled out the new homepage design</a>, though, the company was high on the hover. (You can see it in action below; click on the image to make it larger.)</p>

<p>This was the most striking change in the homepage overhaul, in fact, featuring a prominent My Favorites area on the left side with dozens of specially designed applications&#8211;email, stocks and third-party sites like Facebook, among others&#8211;that users could customize and view through quick hovering glimpses.</p>
<p>Advertising popped up when hovering over the apps, which was Yahoo&#8217;s solution to the alternative of sending users away from the site when they clicked the apps.</p>
<p>In addition, Bartz said in the call that Yahoo&#8217;s international operations would be rejiggered, after an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090817/yahoo-poised-to-name-new-international-head-after-five-month-look-see-at-the-crowned-web-heads-of-europe/">ultimately fruitless search</a> for a new head of the unit. Bartz said she had not been able to find a qualified exec to run international, so she decided to change the set-up.</p>
<p>International ops will be reduced from four regions to three&#8211;Americas; Europe, Middle East, Africa; and Asia Pacific&#8211;with Emerging Markets tucked into them.</p>
<p>They will report to Bartz directly&#8211;with current Emerging Markets head Keith Nilsson taking the job of Global Initiatives SVP, also reporting to her.</p>
<p>Wrote another Yahoo spokeswoman:</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo! has reorganized our regions to strengthen focus on emerging countries, and to align company-wide resources and expertise against the company&#8217;s vision to be the center of people&#8217;s online lives. Effective April 1, the structure will be made up of three regions: The Americas, EMEA and APAC. Our Emerging Markets region, formerly separate, will be absorbed into these new regions to better support our work in countries with large and growing Internet populations. Yahoo! is making a further commitment to its global customers with the creation of a Global Initiatives SVP, reporting directly to Carol Bartz, CEO, focused on supporting global relationships and alliances.&#8221;</p>

<p>So, no surprise that Yahoo (YHOO), which is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091019/yahoo-hires-goodby-as-top-creative-agency-for-its-ongoing-brand-revitalization/">trying mightily to burnish its image worldwide</a>, quickly apologized for the presence of women lap dancers onstage at its Open Hack Day in Taiwan last weekend.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://developer.yahoo.net/blog/archives/2009/10/taiwan_ohd_apology.html">post on its Yahoo Developer Network blog</a> tonight, titled &#8220;Sorry,&#8221; YDN head Chris Yeh wrote:</p>

<p>I wanted to acknowledge the public reaction generated by the images of female dancers at our Taiwan Open Hack Day this past weekend. Our hack events are designed to give developers an opportunity to learn about our APIs and technologies. As many folks have rightly pointed out, the &#8220;Hack Girls&#8221; aspect of our Taiwan Hack Day is not reflective of that spirit or purpose. And it&#8217;s certainly not the message we want to send about our values here at Yahoo!. Hack Days are about making everyone feel welcome, including women coders and technologists.</p>
<p>This incident is regrettable and we apologize to anyone that we have offended. Rest assured, it won&#8217;t happen again.</p>

<p>Ironically, in a <a href="http://developer.yahoo.net/blog/archives/2009/10/2009_taiwan_hac.html">post listing the winners and details of </a> of the Open Hack event, at which Yahoo invited outside developers to brainstorm, Yahoo&#8217;s Erik Eldridge noted earlier today (italics are mine):</p>
<p>&#8220;This was our second visit to Taiwan, and we were really looking forward to coming back to see the <em>passionate</em> Taiwanese developers.&#8221;</p>

(Yahoo PR is checking on that now for me.)</p>

<p>But, perhaps worst of all, this kind of thing is not new for Yahoo&#8217;s hack events in Taiwan, at least, where there seems to be some history of this sort of Pussycat-Dolls-meets-geeks tone.</p>
<p>It is not clear why all the thumpa-thumpa music and dancing gals did not engender complaints last year, although I am guessing the nerd lap action sent over the top.</p>
<p>In any case, here are four videos from the event in 2008 of even more gyrating ladies, which you can contrast with a video from Yahoo&#8217;s New York event on Oct. 12 of this year.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> The videos have been suddenly made private by the person who posted them since I posted them last night, as they now say when you click them. They are not searchable or available any longer on YouTube. But you can see the situation from the images on the videos.</p>

<p>Yahoo is closer to naming a new international head, according to sources, the last big slot left in the top management structure of CEO Carol Bartz.</p>
<p>While BoomTown is endeavoring to get the name of this international man of mystery, several sources said the company has come close to settling on a London-based media exec, who will move to and operate out of its Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>But it is unclear if or when a final appointment will be made.</p>
<p>That exec could be a lot of people, since Yahoo&#8217;s headhunter for the job&#8211;Heidrick &#038; Struggles&#8211;has pretty much talked to the gamut of international Web muckety-mucks since the search started six months ago.</p>
<p>The many chatted up include: Former <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090526/people-networks-president-joanna-shields-leaving-aol/">Bebo head Joanna Shields</a> (nope, she has a noncompete from AOL); former <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090706/mike-volpi-jumps-from-joost-to-index-a-boomtown-interview-and-full-press-release">Joost CEO Mike Volpi</a> (nope, he just landed as a VC at Index Ventures), Microsoft (MSFT) consumer and online man in Britain Ashley Highfield (hmm, would he move so quickly after jumping from Project Kangaroo and the BBC?) and Gavin Patterson, head of the BT Retail unit.</p>
<p>But Yahoo could also opt for a more traditional media exec, said some sources.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/one-last-yahoo-reorg-missive-bartz-tells-employees-what-she-already-said-again">memo to Yahoo staff after her reorganization</a> in February, Bartz said that &#8220;international growth is critical for Yahoo!, which has become too reliant on its U.S. business over the years.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, that key job remains unfilled, in an arena Yahoo has dropped the ball in recently, even as more nimble competitors like Google (GOOG) and Facebook thrive.</p>
<p>In the Yahoo (YHOO) management chart posted below, Bartz has filled the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090611/alteras-tim-morse-tapped-as-yahoo-cfo">CFO role with Tim Morse</a> and the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090421/liveblogging-the-yahoo-earnings-conference-call-it-depends-on-your-definition-of-what-wow-is/">customer advocacy slot with Jeff Russakow</a>.</p>
<p>Without an international head, the three regional heads worldwide&#8211;Rose Tsou (Asia), Rich Riley (Europe) and Keith Nilsson (Emerging Markets)&#8211;have continued to  report to Bartz. The U.S. region&#8211;Yahoo&#8217;s most significant market&#8211;is headed by Hilary Schneider.</p>

<p>Also memo fatigue at <strong>All Things Digital</strong> HQ, if you can believe it.</p>
<p>Okay, I give, Carol! Well, for now, until another juicy internal memo you aren&#8217;t handing out freely lands in my inbox, for example, such as one about a search deal with Microsoft (MSFT). I&#8217;d like one of those to go, please!</p>
<p>But, in a gesture of a leak-free peace (can the drop-kick bounty be suspended for just today?), I am posting this last memo about the management reorganization from Carol &#8220;Chatterbox&#8221; Bartz.</p>
<p>(Although, I wish she would stop insulting the press, as she does below again. We are just doing our job&#8211;and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones/"><em>very</em> accurately, as it turned out</a>&#8211;yet the jibes continue. Which is odd, frankly, given that Bartz has had mostly glowing coverage in the media her entire career.)</p>
<p>But Bartz did seem to leave a little mystery in the email still, as if even more rearranging were to come.</p>
<p>Writes Bartz (my bolding):</p>
<p>&#8220;As soon as decisions were made, I wanted you to know about them&#8211;<strong>even if that means we don&#8217;t have all the details nailed down yet&#8221;</strong>.</p>
<p>Wait, are the deets all nailed by Bartz&#8217;s productive hammer or aren&#8217;t they?</p>
<p>At least, thankfully, the note is capitalized properly, unlike the quaint no-caps stylings of former CEO Jerry Yang.</p>

<p>Our goal is simple: to consistently deliver awesome consumer and advertiser experiences, everywhere in the world we do business. Delivering great customer experiences is everyone&#8217;s job at Yahoo!&#8211;and each part of our organization will have a clear role in making that happen every day.</p>
<p>The timing of this announcement is important. As soon as decisions were made, I wanted you to know about them&#8211;even if that means we don&#8217;t have all the details nailed down yet. Yes, there&#8217;s been a lot of speculation in the media over the past few days&#8230;that&#8217;s been a little frustrating, but I&#8217;m not willing to speak publicly about decisions before they&#8217;re final. Today, they are&#8211;so I&#8217;ll lay out our new organizational structure for you now.</p>
<p>I know you guys have reorg fatigue. Hang in there&#8211;our intention is to leave this structure in place for two to four years. We&#8217;ll continue to make adjustments as needed, but we expect this core structure to stay put.</p>
<p>The structure outlined below will enable us to make big improvements in our product quality and operational efficiency. Part of that is simplicity&#8211;I&#8217;m frankly amazed at how complicated some things are here! We&#8217;ll have much clearer decision making and accountability. Product and regional teams will share responsibility for revenue targets and expense management, but we&#8217;ll have one P&#038;L, for which I&#8217;m accountable.</p>
<p>We will also be in a better position to really listen to and understand our customers&#8211;both consumers and advertisers. I think we&#8217;ve gotten into the habit of focusing internally too much and we sometimes forget who we&#8217;re here to serve. You&#8217;ll notice that our management structure puts a renewed focus on the customer, with stronger feedback loops across the company…and they all come through me.</p>
<p>Also, as you know, no organizational structure is a substitute for collaboration, communication and trust. We&#8217;ll all need to evolve our behavior a bit&#8211;as teams and as individuals – to make this structure work the way it&#8217;s designed.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s the overview, with the roles that will report directly to me. As you&#8217;ll see, some of our leaders are still to be determined. I know you&#8217;ll<br />

<p>Products: We&#8217;ve combined Tech and Product groups under one roof, led by Ari Balogh as EVP Products &#038; CTO. Ari&#8217;s charter is to deliver global products that enable extraordinary consumer and advertiser experiences. Ari&#8217;s direct reports now include one leader for each product group&#8211;we&#8217;ve taken care of the &#8220;two in a box&#8221; problem.</p>
<p>One important note: The Connected Life team has been integrated into various parts of the new organization. Our mobile strategy remains a key part of Yahoo!&#8217;s focus going forward and all of our product groups will own mobile innovations. After leading Connected Life for four years, Marco Boerries has resigned from the company to spend more time with his family in Europe. We thank Marco for his important contributions at Yahoo!.</p>
<p>Regions: There are now two: North America and International. As I&#8217;ve said before, international growth is critical for Yahoo!, which has become too reliant on its U.S. business over the years.</p>
<p>The regions deliver Yahoo!&#8217;s products, programming and services to consumers, partners and advertisers in local markets. They will partner closely with the newly formed Regional Solutions &#038; Products group in Ari&#8217;s organization to help drive a significant shift in how Yahoo! develops products for different geographies. The goal is to have global platforms on which regional product offerings are based.</p>
<p>The North American region&#8211;comprised of the U.S. and Canada&#8211;is led by Hilary Schneider. The leader of our International region, to be hired soon, will be responsible for a cohesive Yahoo! global strategy and seizing our international growth opportunities. Until we determine who&#8217;ll lead the International region, Rose Tsou (Asia), Rich Riley (Europe) and Keith Nilsson (Emerging Markets) will continue to report to me.</p>
<p>Marketing: Elisa Steele will be joining Yahoo! as our Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), effective March 23. Elisa joins us from NetApp where she was SVP, Corporate Marketing. Previous to NetApp, she held executive positions in marketing at Sun Microsystems. Elisa will oversee our global marketing strategy and provide direction for our marketing function. She&#8217;ll bring together the various Yahoo! marketing teams that have been spread across the company. Reporting into Elisa will be Brand Marketing, Audience Marketing, Corporate Communications, Insights, Policy &#038; Privacy, Community Affairs and related central teams. I&#8217;m delighted to have Elisa joining the team.</p>
<p>Customer Advocacy: As I said, we can do much better in hearing the voice of the customer across Yahoo!, and incorporating what we hear into all of our work day-to-day. We have opened a search for a leader, who will oversee Customer Care and Ad Operations globally with the goal of improving how we support Yahoo!&#8217;s users and advertisers. In the interim, these teams will continue to report to Hilary.</p>
<p>Service Engineering &#038; Operations: This new team is responsible for delivering common technology services at scale, including application management and infrastructure. No matter how cool our products are, the customer&#8217;s experience won&#8217;t be great unless our applications consistently deliver. Note that we&#8217;re bringing Service Engineering together as one group because these engineers bring expertise that is best applied horizontally. Leading this organization is David Dibble, who joined Yahoo! in December. David&#8217;s team also will be accountable for delivering more effective corporate IT systems.</p>
<p>Corporate Functions: Blake Jorgensen will be leaving Yahoo! and I am searching for a new CFO. Blake will remain through a transition with his successor, and I want to thank Blake for all of his great contributions to Yahoo! over the past two years. Mike Callahan will continue to lead our Legal team, and David Windley leads our Human Resources function. Joel Jones joins the team as my Chief of Staff.</p>
<p>So that&#8217;s the high-level view. These changes are effective immediately, but we&#8217;ve got more work to do in filling out the structure of each group. In the short term, this transition will be challenging for many of our people. My executive staff will be working with their organizations as quickly as possible to create further clarity. For example, we&#8217;ll need to recast budgets and adjust work areas so we have the right people working side-by-side.</p>
<p>I want to thank all of you who&#8217;ve shared your ideas and views with me since I arrived. Several leaders across Yahoo! came together to design this new structure&#8211;I&#8217;ve been very impressed with their dedication to the right outcomes, particularly how they&#8217;ve embraced the need to eliminate the silos that have been a drag on this organization for so long.</p>
<p>I think this organizational structure has the potential to solve many of the issues you&#8217;ve helped me better understand. Of course, new issues will emerge. But I know we&#8217;ll be aligned and nimble in tackling them together.</p>
<p>This is a tremendous, proud company with a powerful brand, great products and a bright future. Now&#8217;s the time to get more focused than ever on delighting our users and advertisers. Let&#8217;s show them how great Yahoo! can be.</p>

<p>The only issue that arose was over the appointment of Ash Patel to head the new Global Products group. His appointment was greeted with internal dissent, but Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang was said to have insisted that Patel remain on as planned.</p>
<p>Last week, I outlined the sweeping internal changes at Yahoo (YHOO), which will again dramatically change the structure of management.</p>

<p>As we wrote, the new Global Products group will be headed by Patel (pictured here), who is currently EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Platforms and Infrastructure division.</p>
<p>Much of the Network division, which until recently was under the leadership of the <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">now departed Jeff Weiner</a>, will move under Patel, including search, mail, instant messenger, front page, platforms and social networking.</p>
<p>All these products are considered &#8220;global&#8221; properties and products, including divisions run by communications and communities SVP Brad Garlinghouse, former Search SVP Vish Makhijani and Front Door head Tapan Bhat.</p>
<p>While Makhijnai is leaving, Bhat is staying so far and Garlinghouse&#8211;despite previous reports of his imminent departure&#8211;will likely stay on through the summer.</p>
<p>Sources said the prospect of working for Patel is not a welcome one for some Yahoo execs in the old Network division.</p>
<p>Patel has been at Yahoo since 1996, and some do not think his operational style is dynamic enough and claim his division has had problems shipping products.</p>

<p>In the new organization, Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider (pictured here) will get purview over the entire U.S. region.</p>
<p>Schneider will continue to oversee all ad sales and add on the Yahoo Media Group under Scott Moore, who was Weiner&#8217;s other direct report.</p>
<p>That shift will bring together Yahoo&#8217;s vast content properties, like Yahoo Finance, with ad sales and align them more closely.</p>
<p>The rest of the world will be split up between three other regions: Europe, headed by Toby Coppel; Asia, run by Rose Tsou; and emerging markets, headed by Keith Nilsson.</p>
<p>Patel, Schneider and the others all report to Yahoo President Sue Decker.</p>

<p>The reorg was largely run by Decker (pictured here) and top HR execs. Yang was involved but not very visible in the process to top managers.</p>
<p>And all of this reorg might be moot anyway.</p>
<p>Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn is still pursuing his proxy fight to remove Yahoo&#8217;s board and management, which could come to a head at Yahoo&#8217;s annual meeting on Aug. 1.</p>
<p>And investors are pressing Microsoft (MSFT) to make another proposal to run Yahoo&#8217;s search ad and search businesses, which could include <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080625/could-microsoft-get-control-of-yahoo-without-buying-it-investors-think-so/">the software giant buying a significant stake in Yahoo</a>.</p>
<p>While some think Yang will soon hand over the CEO reins to Decker, increasing numbers of insiders and outside investors are pushing for new management at the top, as Yahoo&#8217;s shares decline and more and more talent takes flight from the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;A fish stinks from the head,&#8221; joked one employee. &#8220;This reorg is change, but what we might need goes higher than this.&#8221;</p>
