Google’s Schmidt: We Would Have Loved for Nokia to Adopt Android

Speaking with reporters after his keynote speech in Barcelona, Google’s chairman said the door for Nokia to create Android phones remains open, despite its partnership with Microsoft. Schmidt confirmed the company talked with Nokia, but declined to say just how far those talks had gone.

A national poll released today by Common Sense Media asking how well social networks protect kids online produced an answer that should come as a shock to exactly no one: Not very well, at least according to parents. A full 75 percent of them gave social networking sites such as Facebook a negative rating for the task.

Outgoing Federal Trade Commissioner Pamela Jones Harbour had some choice words for Google today. In remarks delivered at the last in a series of three FTC privacy roundtables, Harbour lambasted Google for the privacy-violating launch of its new social networking service, Buzz.

BoomTown "Terrorizes" Beet.TV Online Video Roundtable (Video of This and More, of Course)

Here’s a whole lot of video on a panel on the future of online video that BoomTown moderated last week in San Francisco. It was organized by Andy Plesser, the kingpin of Beet.TV, the online video news site. Plesser moderated the second half of the two-hour (!!!) session, and I did the first hour. One tweet of the event noted: “The Beet.TV just started and @karaswisher is already terrorizing the panelists.” I beg to differ!

Stern Leave Satellite for Internet Radio? Over Sirius CEO’s Dead Body.

With Howard Stern’s five-year Sirius XM satellite radio deal set to expire in January 2011, there’s been a fair bit of speculation that he might return to terrestrial. Given Stern’s obvious affinity for the permissiveness of satellite, it seems unlikely that he’d ever give it up to return to “regular” radio, but would he decamp for Internet radio? Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin doesn’t seem to think so.

Toni Schneider, chief executive of Automattic will join Max Levchin of Slide, Jason Calacanis of Mahalo, O’Melveny & Myers’ Sam Zucker, and Nirav Tolia of Web 1.0′s Epinions. Along with my group, for whom I am planning all sorts of verbal tortures (“Exactly how much do you make?”), there is also a star-studded investors panel.
