<p>So here&#8217;s a company that wants a piece of that: <a href="http://www.ticketfly.com/">TicketFly</a>, a New York-based start-up that just raised a $2 million Series A round led by High Peaks Venture Partners and Contour Venture Partners. The company had previously raised $1 million in convertible debt last year, via angels Howard Lindzon and Roger Ehrenberg, among others.</p>
<p>If TicketFly works, there&#8217;s a good chance you won&#8217;t ever know about it, because it&#8217;s a B2B business: Consumers fund the operation via surcharges on their tickets, but the real customers are the concert venues, which strike exclusive deals with ticketing companies.</p>
<p>So most of the features are designed with the venues and promoters in mind. TicketFly says it can help with Web site design and management, promoting shows on Twitter and Facebook, tracking sales data in real time, etc. </p>
<p>All of this sounds like fairly straightforward stuff, but the ticketing business is an old, archaic one. And Ticketmaster, the industry&#8217;s eight million-pound gorilla, now owned by Live Nation (LYV), is particularly slow-moving when it comes to all things tech. So some of this really will feel fresh for the concert guys.</p>
<p>More interesting are TicketFly&#8217;s plans, which involve giving venues the chance to sell tickets using the same dynamic pricing/yield management techniques hotels and airlines use: That is, prices for hot shows may shoot up, and if you want to see a band no one else wants to see, you may end up paying very little. </p>
<p>TicketFly has about 50 venues signed up so far, and most are fairly intimate places like Maxwell&#8217;s in Hoboken, N.J., or the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis&#8211;the kinds of of places where you could see Nirvana before Nirvana became Nirvana. </p>
<p>They&#8217;re also the kinds of places that used be served by TicketWeb, another Web-based upstart that Ticketmaster acquired a few years back. No coincidence: TicketFly co-founder Andrew Dreskin used to run that company.</p>

<p>The Street is expecting <a href="http://tech.fortune.cnn.com/2010/04/19/the-street-awaits-apples-earnings/">earnings of $2.44 a share on $12 billion in revenue</a>, and most analyst reports I’ve seen so far suggest Apple will easily meet those expectations and perhaps surpass them. </p>
<p>As I’ve noted here before, NPD sales data for the first few months of 2010 points to strong Mac sales, up 39 percent year-over-year through the first two months of the March quarter. Apple iPhone sales are likely to be impressive as well given increased international distribution and broader carrier support.  </p>
<p>&#8220;We believe Apple will report ~7.25M+ iPhones in the quarter due to strong iPhone 3G S adoption and better penetration into international markets,&#8221; Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore wrote in a research note. </p>
<p>“In addition, we expect solid Mac results (healthy units) and positive product mix towards iMac and MacBook Pros (DB at 2.9M units) due to the continued benefit of the refreshed iMac line up,&#8221; the analyst notes. &#8220;We expect iPod units of ~10M and the continued mix improvement to support iPod revenue (i.e. strong iTouch).&#8221;</p>
<p>Healthy numbers if Apple (AAPL) delivers them, and a nice segue to the company’s June quarter, the first to reflect the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100408/ipad-so-far-by-the-numbers/">market debut of the iPad</a> and last week&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100413/apple-still-selling-laptops-refreshes-macbook-pro-line/">update to the MacBook Pro lineup</a>.</p>

According to market analytics firm Flurry, Google sold an <a href="http://blog.flurry.com/bid/29658/Flurry-Special-Report-Google-Nexus-One-Launch-Week-Sales">estimated 20,000 units in its first week</a>. </p>
<p>An unremarkable showing, to say the least&#8211;especially for a device launched amid so much buzz. Flurry estimates that Nexus One was outsold by Motorola’s (MOT) Droid by more than 12 times and by Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 3GS 80 times.</p>
<p>Now, Flurry’s Nexus One sales estimate is obviously the roughest of guesses&#8211;the company gets its numbers by monitoring application usage on the iPhone and Android platforms, not from any hard sales data. That said, it’s likely at least directionally correct and suggests that Google (GOOG) may have a tough time moving the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100106/google-to-sell-5-6-million-nexus-ones-in-2010/">five to six million Nexus One handsets</a> analysts have been calling for it to sell by the end of 2010&#8211;especially if <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100112/decent-nexus-one-customer-support-apparently-not-on-list-of-things-google-plans-to-make-universally-accessible-and-useful/">customer support issues</a> associated with the superphone continue.</p>

NPD Group reports that revenue from consoles and software plummeted during October, falling 16.4 percent from September and 19 percent year-over-year. It was the industry&#8217;s seventh consecutive monthly decline. </p>
<p>&#8220;The continued economic turmoil, and in particular the troubling unemployment rate, is undoubtedly impacting industry sales,&#8221; said NPD analyst Anita Frazier. &#8220;Our latest Economy Tracker indicated that although consumers&#8217; general opinion about the economy is improving, their outlook on their own personal situation is worsening. If consumers&#8217; personal outlook continues to erode, they could very well be much more conservative with their holiday shopping this year.&#8221;</p>
<p>A somber warning for the videogame industry. Even recent price cuts on game consoles have done little to spur demand.  </p>
<p>&#8220;Year to date, the hardware category has experienced the sharpest decline in the industry, with unit sales down 10 percent compared to the same time period last year,&#8221; Frazier wrote. &#8220;Recent price cuts helped spur a one- to two-month increase in unit sales, and this month&#8217;s Wii sales reflect that boost, but the other platforms have not sustained the sales momentum after price reduction.&#8221;</p>
<p>The videogame industry may be recession-resistant, but it is clearly not recession-proof, as some once believed. Sales data, below.</p>

And the usual consensus from the chattering classes: Apple ads <em>goooood</em>. Microsoft ads <em>baaaaaad</em>.</p>
<p>But Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) latest campaign, which features documentary-like tales of  youngish people priced out by Apple (AAPL), may actually be working. At least when it comes to youngish people&#8217;s perceptions of the two brands. So says tracking service <a href="http://www.brandindex.com/">BrandIndex</a>. More from <a href="http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=136731">AdAge</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The perceptions of value the two brands offer has shifted dramatically in the eyes of 18- to 34-years-olds since Microsoft began running its &#8220;Laptop Hunters&#8221; campaign in late March. Apple&#8217;s &#8220;value perception&#8221; has fallen considerably, while Microsoft&#8217;s has risen&#8230;</p>
<p>Based on daily interviews of 5,000 people, BrandIndex found the age group gave Apple its highest rating in late winter, when it notched a value score of 70 on a scale of -100 to 100 (a score of zero means that people are giving equal amounts of positive and negative feedback about a brand). But its score began to fall shortly after and, despite brief rallies, hovers around 12.4 today.</p>
<p>Microsoft, on the other hand, has risen from near zero in early February to a value-perception score of 46.2.</p></blockquote>
<p>The real test, of course will be actual sales data, and we won&#8217;t see anything resembling official numbers for this period until several months from now. But for the record, tracking service NPD says that <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124269481010532827.html">overall PC sales dropped seven percent in the first three months of this year</a>, while <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apples-mac-decline-could-be-worse-this-quarter-2009-5">Apple&#8217;s Mac shipments dropped 1.8 percent</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Everyone knows why magazine companies like Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081209/holiday-cheer-from-time-inc-layoffs-nearly-done/">Time Inc.</a> and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081030/cuts-coming-to-conde-nast-too-portfolio-gathers-the-troops-for-all-hands-meeting/">Cond&eacute; Nast</a> are shedding people left and right: They&#8217;re shedding ad dollars left and right. But sometimes a visual really does help drive the point home. So thanks to <a href="http://www.mediapost.com/publications/?fa=Articles.san&amp;s=96640&amp;Nid=50344&amp;p=918739">MediaPost</a> for this graph, which is based off ad sales data from magazine trade publisher Media Industry Newsletter:</p>

<p>But if you really want to know why things are really grim in the magazine world, don&#8217;t just pay attention to the right side of the graph, where ad pages plummet like Wile E. Coyote off a cliff. Look over at the left side, which shows that even before the econalypse hit, magazines were essentially flat.</p>
<p>That is, magazines aren&#8217;t just getting hurt by the economy&#8211;they&#8217;re getting pummeled by a fundamental shift of ad dollars away from print and to the Web.</p>
<p>So: Anyone who wants to stay in the magazine world needs to contemplate a career on the Web, right? Right. Except it&#8217;s unclear how many jobs the Web is going to offer, since digital content is worth so much less than its analog counterpart, at least in the eyes of advertisers. More on that later. No need to pile on the grimness on a Monday morning.</p>

But it will be some day if Citigroup research analyst Mark Mahaney has anything to say about it. In a report to clients Monday, Mahaney, who in May predicted <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080515/kindle/">the device would generate $750 million for Amazon by 2010</a>, said the company could be on track to sell as many as 380,000 Kindles this year.</p>
<p>380,000 Kindles sold. That&#8217;s double Mahaney&#8217;s May prediction. And it&#8217;s an important number historically. &#8220;In its first year, that&#8217;s exactly how many iPods were sold,&#8221; Mahaney wrote. &#8220;Turns out the Kindle is becoming the iPod of the book world.&#8221;</p>
<p>But is it really? And on what sort of data is that pronouncement based? Amazon (AMZN) itself has disclosed no actual sales data for the Kindle. The company said only that the selection of titles available for the device has jumped 67 percent since its launch. Surely it&#8217;s impossible to extrapolate sales of 380,000 from that figure alone. So on what other data is Mahaney relying here? Just this, apparently:</p>
<ol>
<li>An anonymous source recently <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/01/we-know-how-many-kindles-amazon-has-sold-240000/">told TechCrunch</a> that Amazon has shipped 240,000 Kindles. That&#8217;s <em>shipped</em>, not sold.</li>
<li>Kindle tops Amazon&#8217;s <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/electronics">Bestsellers in Electronics</a> list</li>
<li>Kindle has more than <a href="http://www.amazon.com/review/product/B000FI73MA/ref=pd_ts_e_1_cm_cr_acr_txt/103-0060720-6885468?%5Fencoding=UTF8&amp;showViewpoints=1">4,000 customer reviews</a>, quite a few of them positive.</li>
</ol>
<p>Not exactly an abundance of hard data, is it? Which is not to say that the Kindle isn&#8217;t well on its way to becoming the iPod of the book world, just that we won&#8217;t know for certain until Amazon tells us with hard sales figures.</p>
