			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Almost exactly one year ago, Research In Motion introduced what I then called the Buick of BlackBerrys: the BlackBerry Bold. It was bulky, heavy and seemed made for the holster-wearing set. But what it lacked in style it made up for in comfort. It had a generously sized keyboard, bright screen and even a leatherette back to accent its luxurious side. The Bold was RIM&#8217;s first BlackBerry to run on the fast 3G network, and AT&#038;T was asking $300 for it—$100 more than the least expensive Apple iPhone at the time.</p>
<p>Much has changed in a year, most notably the growing number of serious competitors vying to steal customers from RIM (RIMM) and Apple (AAPL), and the surge of applications (&#8220;apps&#8221; for short) available for these super smart phones. </p>

<p>This week, I tested RIM&#8217;s new BlackBerry Bold 9700 (na.blackberry.com), which will be available on Nov. 27 for $200 with a two-year T-Mobile contract. Like the original Bold, the Bold 9700 has a leatherette back. But that&#8217;s where the similarities end. This new version reminds me of the original Bold after a diet: smaller in every dimension—width, height, depth and weight—and, physically, it&#8217;s a lot like the newer BlackBerry Curve models. (I use the Curve 8900 every day, and after using the two together for a week I still mistook them for one another at a glance.) </p>
<p>RIM has long been proud of its diverse selection and the fact that it doesn&#8217;t force a &#8220;one size fits all&#8221; theory on its users. Instead, it offers BlackBerrys in all shapes and sizes, ranging from the Pearl Flip, a flip phone with a built-in BlackBerry, to the Storm 2, a touch-screen device without a physical keyboard, and several models in between. </p>
<p>Now, the Bold has dropped its distinguished characteristics. The Buick of BlackBerrys has become as common as the Toyota Camry. Is there nothing left for the user who likes a large, luxurious BlackBerry? </p>
<p>In a side-by-side comparison between this new Bold 9700, the Curve 8900 ($150 after a $100 mail-in rebate) and the Tour 9630 ($150 after Verizon&#8217;s $100 online discount), the physical differences are almost imperceptible. And these models don&#8217;t look all that different from the Curve 8520, which costs $50 with a two-year T-Mobile contract when bought at Wal-Mart (WMT). </p>
<p>The new Bold&#8217;s smaller size means its keyboard also is slightly smaller than its predecessor: It measures about 5.5 centimeters across rather than 5.9 centimeters. I still found it relatively comfortable to use. But this keyboard is almost exactly the same as the keyboard on the BlackBerry Tour, except the new Bold&#8217;s bottom row of keys is slightly shorter. Unlike the keyboard found on the Curve 8900 and other less-expensive Curves, the keys on the Bold 9700 are positioned side by side with no spaces between them, and horizontal rows are divided by chrome frets.</p>

<p>While the Bold 9700 looks rather undistinguished, it has a few less-obvious attributes that give it a little oomph. For starters, it uses a trackpad for scrolling the screen. Longtime Blackberry users will remember the original scroll wheel, which was on the right side of the device. In 2006, the scroll wheel was replaced with a trackball on the front of the device. This September, that trackball was replaced by a trackpad as first seen on the Curve 8520, and its appearance on this new Bold confirms RIM&#8217;s decision to use it as the navigational tool of choice.</p>
<p>This trackpad is a tiny, touch-sensitive square that works by sensing a finger&#8217;s directional movements. Pressing in on the trackpad, like pressing in on the trackball, selects something on the screen. At first, I missed the satisfying physical feel of scrolling with the trackball, and the trackpad felt fast and less controllable to my thumb. But I soon got used to the trackpad and appreciated that it does away with all moving parts that could possibly get stuck—a trackball hazard for many BlackBerry users. The trackpad also establishes a flat layer beneath the screen that looks sleek and smooth in line with the four navigational buttons. </p>
<p>Another advantage of the Bold 9700 is its battery life. If you take off this BlackBerry&#8217;s leatherette back, a battery that measures almost the size of the device itself lies beneath. This large battery supplies the Bold 9700 with enough juice to last up to 19 days in standby mode. By comparison, the BlackBerry Tour and Curve 8900 last for up to 14 days each in standby. The new Bold&#8217;s talk time is up to six hours, slightly better than the Curve 8900&#8242;s 5½ and an hour better than the Tour&#8217;s five-hour talk time.</p>
<p>This thinner, lighter, smaller Bold is more comfortable to use for phone calls than the original, which could make users feel like they were holding a small piece of toast up to their ear during calls. I made several calls with no problems. Emailing on this Bold 9700 was as simple as always, and I set up four email accounts for testing. </p>
<p>Despite its fancy new BlackBerrys, RIM needs to overhaul the way it handles apps. The Bold 9700 comes preloaded with a prominently positioned icon for RIM&#8217;s BlackBerry App World  store. But apps downloaded from here still go right into the &#8220;Downloads&#8221; folder, sending users unfamiliar with this system into a frantic search for their newly downloaded app. </p>
<p>And not all apps go into that folder; the Facebook app goes straight to the &#8220;Apps&#8221; folder. Why not put every new app right on the home screen and let me put them into folders if I so choose?</p>
<p>Once apps are downloaded, RIM neglects to notify you when all apps need to be updated. On my personal Curve 8900, I recently dug into the settings of my TwitterBerry and Facebook apps and manually checked to see if updated versions were available for each. This was the case, and I downloaded the new versions, but most people would never think to check for this kind of thing. Instead, RIM should send notifications about available updates for all apps. </p>
<p>The Bold 9700 runs on T-Mobile&#8217;s 3G network, which isn&#8217;t nearly as established as the 3G networks that Verizon (VZ) and AT&#038;T (T) offer. It also can connect to Wi-Fi and allows voice calls to be made over Wi-Fi. (The BlackBerry Tour connects to Verizon&#8217;s 3G network but doesn&#8217;t have Wi-Fi—a huge downside. The Curve 8900 connects to Wi-Fi but not to 3G.)</p>
<p>The other attributes of the Bold 9700 are like the BlackBerry Curve 8900 and Tour: They all have cameras with flashes that are capable of capturing 3.2-megapixel photographs, bright 480&#215;360-pixel displays, built-in GPS and slots for microSD memory cards so as to expand their memory.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re considering a BlackBerry upgrade, the Bold 9700 offers 3G and Wi-Fi, a combination not offered by another BlackBerry with a full physical keyboard—other than the original Bold. But since many of the Bold 9700&#8242;s features are about the same as less-expensive BlackBerrys, it&#8217;s worth considering the Tour and Curve 8900 before you spend $200 on a device that no longer lives up to its bold name.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Web browsing and email have comfortably migrated to mobile handhelds like the iPhone, BlackBerry and Palm (PALM) Pre. But many of these gadgets still cost a lot compared with cellphones that come free with renewed two-year contracts. </p>
<p>This week, I tested a new BlackBerry that costs less than any other BlackBerry did at launch—that is, if you buy it at the right place. Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry Curve 8520 costs just $49 at Wal-Mart (WMT)—or $130 if you buy it at T-Mobile. Both prices are with two-year T-Mobile contracts.</p>

<p>The BlackBerry Curve has been one of the company&#8217;s most popular models. All iterations of the Curve combine a full QWERTY keyboard with a sleeker, more stylish look than bigger BlackBerry models like the Bold. And Curves typically cost less than their larger counterparts. In February, RIM refreshed its Curve brand for the first time in over two years with the 8900. This model was a real upgrade for Curve users, thanks to a brighter screen, faster performance and flatter keys that were easier to press. But six months later, it still costs as much as $199 (after rebate)—a steep asking price considering how some older 8300-series Curves are offered for around $50 with two-year contracts.</p>
<p>This newest $49 Curve 8520 lowers that price barrier. Its monthly T-Mobile service plans are also relatively inexpensive, starting at $55 for voice and data (not including MMS or SMS messaging). </p>
<p>It has two features never before seen on a BlackBerry. First, in place of a trackball or scroll wheel, this Curve uses a trackpad—a mini version of those used for mouse navigation on laptops.  </p>
<p>Second, it has designated physical buttons for playing, pausing and skipping ahead or back within media like videos and music. These rubbery buttons are built into the top edge of the BlackBerry.</p>
<p>I like the look of the Curve 8520—especially how the surface covering its screen extends down to the trackpad and its four surrounding buttons, giving it a smooth facade. It comes in two colors, black and frost (I used the black). Its low price, alone, will be enough to draw customers.  </p>
<p>But something about the way its keyboard and navigational keys worked felt cheap. Letter keys felt light and hollow while the Send, Menu, Escape and End keys around the trackpad clicked as I touched them.</p>
<p>The specifications of this BlackBerry tell the tale more specifically. Its 320&#215;240 pixel screen looks faded next to that of the Curve 8900, which is 480&#215;360. The blinking red indicator light at the top front corner of all BlackBerrys is a barely noticeable dot on this device. </p>
<p>And its camera is only two megapixels, not 3.2 megapixels like on the 8900, and is the first on a BlackBerry not to have a built-in flash. Also, it doesn&#8217;t run on the fast 3G network, though it uses Wi-Fi and automatically connects to trusted networks when in range of them. </p>
<p>First-time smartphone owners may not notice or care about these small details, but veteran BlackBerry users will pick up on them right away.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 incorporates useful physical features found on previous models like right- and left-side convenience keys that work as handy shortcuts. It comes with a 1-gigabyte microSD memory card so users don&#8217;t have to buy their own before loading this device with photos, music and videos. </p>
<p>A strip of rubber runs around the Curve&#8217;s edge, covering up and smoothing over its convenience keys and volume buttons. This rugged addition isn&#8217;t visible from the front of the BlackBerry and it will probably go a long way in preventing nicks and dings. The word &#8220;Curve&#8221; is imprinted on the back of the BlackBerry, proudly branding this model.</p>
<p>The navigational trackpad is a cinch to use and moves the cursor up, down, right and left with very little effort. To select, one needs only to press in on the trackpad just as with the  trackball. Unlike the trackball, which rolls in place and can get stuck once in a great while, the trackpad doesn&#8217;t have any moving parts.</p>
<p>The physical media keys on the Curve 8520&#8242;s top edge work to instantly start playing media from any screen, like a music video that I watched. If you were to use your BlackBerry as your sole portable media player, these would be more valuable. And their position on the top of the Curve makes them easy to reach if the device is in a pocket or purse. </p>
<p>In my everyday usage scenarios, I usually forgot about these shortcut buttons and just used the trackpad to find and select a track or video for playing.  </p>
<p>BlackBerry&#8217;s App World store for applications that users can load onto the device still only offers 2,000 apps, compared to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) 65,000. This means that for now, this new Curve can&#8217;t be enhanced with as many outside programs, which is a real downside.  And if you do download a lot of apps, or music or videos or photos, you may have to get a bigger memory card.</p>
<p>The Curve 8520 isn&#8217;t made for BlackBerry fanatics. But it&#8217;s a good entry-level BlackBerry for users who still haven&#8217;t let go of their basic cellphones. At Wal-Mart&#8217;s $49 price, it&#8217;s hard to beat.  </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>To its fiercest devotees, one of the best things about the BlackBerry is its carefully designed physical keyboard, which the skilled BlackBerry addict can play like a violin. These folks scorn Apple&#8217;s popular iPhone, whose keyboard is virtual and must be operated by tapping on the screen.</p>
<p>But, on Friday, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon Wireless</a> and <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=RIMM'>Research in Motion</a> (RIMM), the BlackBerry&#8217;s maker, will do the unthinkable: They will introduce a BlackBerry model without a physical keyboard, one where typing and navigating require tapping on glass, just as users do on the iPhone. This new model is called the BlackBerry Storm, and will sell for $250 with a two-year contract, though a $50 mail-in rebate can bring the price down close to the $199 that Apple (AAPL) charges for the base model of the iPhone.</p>

<p>Despite its lack of a keyboard, the Storm is a real BlackBerry in every other respect, with push email, corporate features and the familiar BlackBerry menus. In many respects, the Storm is a touch-based, large-screen version of the recently released BlackBerry Bold, which is the most polished version of a traditional BlackBerry. It is also the latest member of the new class of hand-held computers, the super-smart phone category kicked off by the iPhone last year and joined by the Google G1 earlier this year.</p>
<p>The Storm sports a large, high-resolution touch screen that fills most of its surface and automatically switches from portrait to landscape mode when the phone is turned. There&#8217;s also a forthcoming souped-up download store for third-party software, meant to be similar to the ones on the iPhone and the Google (GOOG) phone. And the Storm can even be used in European and other countries where most Verizon (VZ) phones don&#8217;t work.</p>

<p>However, the biggest innovation in the Storm is a clever feature RIM hopes will give it a big advantage over the iPhone. When you strike a key or icon on the Storm&#8217;s screen, you feel a physical sensation, as if you were pressing down on a real key or button. That&#8217;s because you are, in fact, pressing a real button. The entire glass display is one large button, mounted on a mechanical substructure that allows it to be depressed when pressure is applied.</p>
<p>The idea behind this feature is to make typing on glass feel much more like typing on a real keyboard, and thus to make the virtual keyboard, and the touch interface, more acceptable to people used to physical keyboards and buttons. This push-down screen also replaces the side-mounted scroll wheel or track ball on other BlackBerrys for activating menu choices and icons.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, this physical feedback feature, which RIM calls SurePress, didn&#8217;t magically turn the Storm&#8217;s touch interface and virtual keyboard into their physical counterparts. The feature does provide a more reassuring confirmation that a key has been struck or an icon has been clicked than the mere visual feedback one receives from the iPhone. But neither I, nor any of the several BlackBerry addicts I asked to try it out, considered typing on the Storm&#8217;s keyboard to be very similar to using the keyboard of a traditional full-sized BlackBerry.</p>
<p>In my opinion, using the Storm&#8217;s keyboard is much more like using the iPhone&#8217;s keyboard than a traditional BlackBerry&#8217;s. I found that I could type quite well on the Storm after awhile, but that a greater adjustment, and more practice, were required than with a physical keyboard.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a keyboard oddity that I found annoying, and that may put off others. It presents you with a full virtual keyboard only when you are holding it horizontally. When you hold the Storm vertically, you get a mashed-up keyboard, like the one on the narrower BlackBerry Pearl, which has multiple letters on each key. This keyboard design relies on software to guess which letter you meant to press. You can also switch to a virtual cellphone-style keypad that requires you to hit each key multiple times.</p>

<p>This is a curious design decision. Once a company ditches a physical keyboard for a virtual one, it can create all kinds of keyboard variations. RIM could have offered a full, vertically oriented keyboard, even if it would have had smaller, more closely spaced keys.</p>
<p>RIM also failed to customize the Storm&#8217;s virtual keyboard for some common, specific tasks. For instance, on the iPhone, when you are typing in a Web address in the browser, the keyboard morphs to offer a convenient key that automatically enters &#8220;.com&#8221;. Not so on the Storm.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s another glaring deficit in the Storm: It lacks Wi-Fi capability. This means that, unlike on the Bold, the iPhone or the Google G1, if high-speed cellphone data service is absent or pokey, you can&#8217;t fall back on speedy Wi-Fi connections in public places. And, at home or in the office, you can&#8217;t take advantage of Wi-Fi connections that are often much faster than cellphone data networks.</p>
<p>The Storm has some important advantages over the iPhone. Its screen, while 7% smaller physically, offers about 13% higher resolution. Photos and videos look beautiful on it. It has much better battery life for phone calls than either the iPhone or the Google G1. While the latter two phones deliver just under their claimed five hours of talk time, in my tests, the Storm lasted a bit over six hours, which is actually half an hour more than its claimed 5.5 hours of talk time. And the Storm has a removable battery, unlike its Apple rival.</p>
<p>This new BlackBerry comes with more memory than the similarly priced base model of the iPhone &#8212; nine gigabytes versus eight gigabytes. And, unlike the iPhone&#8217;s memory, the Storm&#8217;s is expandable, via larger flash cards.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s camera is much better than the iPhone&#8217;s, at 3.2 megapixels, versus just 2 megapixels for the Apple device. It also has zoom and flash, features the iPhone&#8217;s camera lacks. And, unlike the iPhone or the Google G1, the Storm can record videos. In my tests, all of these camera features worked well.</p>
<p>Also, the Storm has copy and paste functionality; MMS (a service for sending photos directly to other phones without using email); voice dialing; and the ability to act as a modem for your laptop. It also allows you to edit, and not just to view, Microsoft (MSFT) Office documents. All of these features are missing from the iPhone out of the box.</p>
<p>The Storm also has a better speaker than the iPhone, and a noise-canceling microphone system. Phone calls, even on speaker phone, were crisp, clear and plenty loud. Physically, the Storm is attractive but hardly svelte. While it&#8217;s about the same length and width as the iPhone, it is 15% thicker and 17% heavier &#8212; almost as heavy as the chunky G1.</p>
<p>The Verizon high-speed network on which the Storm runs is older and better-established than either the T-Mobile (DT) high-speed system the G1 uses or the AT&#038;T (T) 3G network used by the current iPhone. Where Verizon&#8217;s high-speed data coverage is strong, the Storm flies.</p>
<p>But, because it lacks Wi-Fi, the Storm can be much slower at Web access than its main competitors. I tested these Web speeds in two hotels in Silicon Valley. In the first, where Verizon reception was strong, the Storm trounced the iPhone on cellphone data speeds, averaging over 800 kilobits per second to the iPhone&#8217;s 621 kbps over AT&#038;T. But, when I switched the iPhone to use the hotel&#8217;s Wi-Fi network, it beat the Storm by 100 kbps or so.</p>
<p>At the second hotel, barely a mile away, the Storm&#8217;s lack of Wi-Fi hurt much more. There, Verizon&#8217;s signal was poor, and data speeds on the Storm averaged a horrible 96 kbps. But the iPhone on AT&#038;T averaged 459 kbps, and on Wi-Fi the iPhone averaged 785 kbps.</p>
<p>My test Storm, which was a near-final model missing only a few minor software tweaks, was also sluggish at some tasks. It took noticeably longer than the iPhone to flip the first photo from landscape to portrait orientation, or to start the process of flipping through a series of photos by swiping them with a finger. And some other tasks were also slow. It&#8217;s possible that production models will be quicker.</p>
<p>Rim has tweaked the familiar BlackBerry user interface for the touch screen, and in general these changes worked well. You select the menu item or icon you want with a light touch, then press down on the screen to activate or confirm your choice. There are even a couple of cool new touch features. For instance, in a list of emails, if you lightly touch and hold one entry, the Storm shows you all messages in that thread.</p>
<p>But this combination of a light touch followed by a hard press on the large screen took some practice, just like typing did. It befuddled several BlackBerry veterans at first.</p>
<p>And some common tasks took more steps than on the iPhone. For instance, emailing a link from a Web page required four steps on the Storm, versus two on the Apple device. The Storm&#8217;s email system will be familiar to every BlackBerry user. It has the same corporate email features as other BlackBerrys, and I was easily able as well to use a BlackBerry Internet email account and to set up several personal email accounts, including Gmail.</p>
<p>The Web browser is much improved over the one in older BlackBerry models, and offers multiple ways to view and navigate pages, including one in which a finger moves a cursor, just as on a PC. But I found that panning and zooming in the browser was a bit slower and more awkward than on the iPhone. And, to make some Web sites work properly, I had to dig through menus to change options.</p>
<p>Using the BlackBerry desktop software, I was easily able to synchronize my calendar and contact data over a cable from a Windows PC. (There&#8217;s also Mac software for the same task.) But, unlike the iPhone or the G1, the Storm doesn&#8217;t offer wireless synchronization from consumer services, only from corporate servers.</p>
<p>The Storm&#8217;s multimedia software isn&#8217;t as fancy as the iPhone&#8217;s, but it&#8217;s better than the G1&#8242;s, and worked very well in my tests.</p>
<p>Overall, the Storm is a very capable handheld computer that will appeal to BlackBerry users who have been pining for a touch-controlled device with a larger screen. And it offers yet another good option for anyone who is looking to buy one of the new, more powerful, pocket computers.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you a member of the &#8220;I-check-my-email-constantly-even-when-I-know-no-one-has-emailed-me&#8221; club? If so, your mobile email device is never far and you&#8217;ve found yourself wondering how other people can leave unread emails sitting in their inboxes all day. On the other hand, those seemingly unplugged people are likely puzzled by BlackBerry addicts, wondering what could possibly be so urgent that they need to know about it the second it happens.</p>
<p>This week, I tested Peek, a device that might bridge the gap between these two camps. It&#8217;s made for those who don&#8217;t intend to become consumed with mobile email, and don&#8217;t need a combination phone, Internet, digital camera and email gadget. Yet from time to time, these people wish they had a better way to check emails without going home and turning on their computers.</p>

<p>Since I fit the constantly-checking-email description, I enlisted the help of someone who falls squarely into the category that Peek is targeting: my mother. Mom is constantly on the go, working on one project or another, and she doesn&#8217;t have time to consistently check her email. On more than one occasion, I&#8217;ve had to call her to talk about emails I sent that she didn&#8217;t yet read.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Stylish and Simple</h5>
<p>Peek is a stylishly thin device that, to a mobile email novice, could pass for a BlackBerry. It receives and sends email, period. Peek doesn&#8217;t have a Web browser, phone or built-in digital camera. It&#8217;s sold for $100 at Target and GetPeek.com, and costs $20 monthly for contract-free service. Most email accounts work with this gadget, including Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail and AOL, and up to three accounts can be set to work on each device.</p>
<p>Peek Inc., a New York company that was started by former Virgin Mobile USA (VM) employees, mailed a Peek to my mom in Pennsylvania, and she has been using it for about a week with positive results.</p>
<p>I, too, tested a Peek, but I was more interested in my mom&#8217;s feedback since, prior to this test, she hadn&#8217;t used a mobile email device and I use two different ones &#8212; regularly. Overall, I&#8217;d suggest waiting until November to buy a Peek due to a handful of improvements that the company plans to add by then.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Winning Over a Novice</h5>
<p>My mom got the hang of Peek almost instantly and found it both helpful and relatively easy to use. She liked its full keyboard and the way most of its keys lit up and were familiarly placed like those on a computer keyboard &#8212; a feature I take for granted on my BlackBerry. Its price and stylish, thin look appealed to her, too. She tested an Aqua Blue Peek &#8212; though the device also comes in Black Cherry and Charcoal Gray. I knew Mom was catching on when she casually sent a message from her Peek late one night using the subject line, &#8220;What&#8217;s Up?&#8221;</p>
<p>My mom suggested a few improvements, and I agreed with all of them. The Peek can vibrate, chime and glow blue when new emails are received, but none of these indicators are particularly noticeable. For example, the chime sounds only once and neither my mom nor I could always hear it &#8212; even at its loudest setting &#8212; especially if it was in a purse. A blue indicator light on the Peek glows once every 10 seconds for 10 minutes after an email is received, but goes idle after that.</p>
<p>The font used on the Peek&#8217;s screen could stand to be a little bigger. My mom found words typed in all capital letters were easier and faster to read than the regular font, but she thought most people wouldn&#8217;t have too much trouble while using their glasses.</p>
<p>Peek Inc. says that by November, it will have added a louder chime, a constantly blinking indicator light and a larger font to the device. Also in November, people who purchase 12 months of service at once will get an extra month free.</p>
<p>Compared with my BlackBerry Curve, the Peek was thinner but I found its buttons and side scroll wheel a bit stiff. And Mom and I both found that the oft-used Space bar key was too tough to press down.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">One Inbox, Three Accounts</h5>
<p>The Peek&#8217;s straightforward system uses one inbox view (in which up to three email accounts are combined), one menu and a side scroll wheel for selecting commands. And though my mom didn&#8217;t seem to mind, the device&#8217;s overall navigation system came off as a bit clumsy to me. For example, rather than selecting an email to read it, I had to select an email, and then choose &#8220;Open Email&#8221; from a menu list. On most other devices, this can be done with one step.</p>
<p>But some BlackBerry tricks are built into the Peek, such as touching &#8220;T&#8221; to automatically go to the top of an email or inbox; &#8220;B&#8221; to go to the bottom; or &#8220;N&#8221; to move to the next email without navigating back to the inbox list. Likewise, the space bar serves as a built-in Page Down button. And holding a letter down will capitalize it.</p>
<p>Photo attachments can be easily opened on the Peek, though attached documents from programs like Word and Excel won&#8217;t open up.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Synching Contacts</h5>
<p>A simple step lets users synchronize their email account&#8217;s contact list with the Peek. My mom did this with an AOL account, and I did it with Hotmail, Gmail and .Mac accounts. Peek devices automatically check for email every two to five minutes, or if users can&#8217;t wait two minutes, they can initiate a Send/Receive manually and see an up-to-date queue of emails.</p>
<p>Peeks each have eight megabytes of usable memory, which can hold about 5,000 emails. Once a device reaches capacity, an on-screen prompt asks permission to delete the 500 oldest emails. Peek Inc. says a full battery charge will last about five days if a device handles around 10 to 15 emails a day; power users who send and receive 200 to 300 emails a day will get about two days of use from a full charge.</p>
<p>When asked, my mom concluded that she would probably buy a Peek, but said she still wasn&#8217;t sure that she had an urgent need to see email all that often. She also noted that Peek could become a Pandora&#8217;s box of sorts for people who, as they use it more often, might want to get more out of it &#8212; such as Google searches or other Web browsing.</p>
<p>Peek serves a purpose: It gives those who don&#8217;t belong to the &#8220;I-check-my-email-constantly&#8221; club a way to &#8220;peek&#8221; in on their emails and not feel so unplugged from friends and family. That alone, is reason enough to buy my mom one of these devices.</p>
