Featuring Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, brought to you by Bill from "Bill & Ted's."

Thank you, Techmeme, for pointing out that one of the films debuting at South by Southwest in a couple months is “Downloaded,” a documentary on Napster. Here’s the trailer:

Based on that clip, at least, this looks like a pretty straightforward retelling of the tale, made with the cooperation of co-founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker (recall that the two of them did a whole lot of press last spring before they launched Airtime).

But even if the movie turns out be a down-the-middle documentary, it’s probably still worth watching. In 2013, it may be hard to recall just how revolutionary Napster was, how badly it decimated the music industry, and how deeply its ethos has saturated the Web, even though the service/business itself is long gone.

Bonus points: Archival footage of Parker with frosted hair, new MOG/Project Daisy CEO Ian Rogers with long hair, and Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich explaining his lawsuit against Parker and company at a news conference. (Last month Ulrich and Parker announced that they had become business partners.)

Extra bonus point: The movie is directed by Alex Winter, better known to many of us as “the guy who was not Keanu Reeves in ‘Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure.’”

The painful progress of the much-hyped and well-funded video site.

This is how Sean Parker — the famous and sometimes infamous entrepreneur whose legendary credits include Napster, Facebook and Spotify — described how his newest high-profile venture, Airtime, is going so far:

“Running a start-up is like eating glass. You just start to like the taste of your own blood.”

If that sounds very painful and a bit twisted (as well as vintage Parker), as it turns out, it’s a pretty accurate description of the state of the situation at the much-touted, heavily funded next-generation communications platform.

Along with executive turmoil — including the upcoming stepping back of tech lead Eric Feng and Shawn Fanning, Parker’s Napster co-founder, who was the CEO and driving force behind Airtime while Parker was focused on Spotify last year — there has also been a very weak launch in getting Airtime off the ground.

Since it debuted in June with more than $33 million in funding, the site has only 10,000 monthly active users so far.

To Parker, it’s all just part of the always-tumultuous birth of any notable start-up.

“We are iterating on our approach,” he insisted in an interview at Airtime’s office in San Francisco on Friday. “Airtime is finally getting around to some of the bigger ideas that got me interested in this project in the first place.”

As usual for Parker, Airtime is a significant idea, which he is now describing as a next-generation Skype that will be “transforming communications.”

It will include a plethora of innovations to come that will further make it clear that big things are on the road ahead.

“Now is the most toxic time ever in Silicon Valley,” explained Parker, because people start companies without conviction about their ideas, just to get bought by Facebook or someone else.

Not him, apparently.

But first there are the many bumps, especially the worrisome changes in leadership at Airtime.

First, there is Feng, who will be leaving the company soon, marking a quick exit for the high-profile “acqhire” who was formerly the founding CTO of Hulu and a partner at powerful venture firm Kleiner Perkins.

After Airtime bought Feng’s start-up Erly in March, Parker and Feng fired members of the existing Airtime product team, ripped out the technology that had been built over the past two years — which apparently broke under the strain of just 100 concurrent users — and rebuilt the site in time for the June launch.

Eric Feng

Parker, Feng and Airtime investors maintain that Feng’s role at Airtime was always set up to be temporary, to help Airtime through its initial public launch. The Erly acquisition was “frontloaded,” they say, so that the rewards for being bought came upfront rather than after years at the new gig. And for his part, Feng has not yet left Airtime, and said he is not sure what he is doing next.

But there are concerns from inside and outside the company that because the Airtime product team is essentially Feng’s Erly team (which, in turn, was essentially Feng’s Hulu team), it’s unclear whether they will leave with him or stay with Parker.

In addition, long-time Parker associate Fanning no longer has a day-to-day role at the company, although he is still on the board.

It’s a problem, because in the past Parker has had a pattern of working alongside a visionary entrepreneur — be it Fanning at Napster, Mark Zuckerberg at Facebook, or Daniel Ek at Spotify — and at Airtime he now has no such partner.

Parker agreed that his strength throughout his various projects, from Napster until now, has been around product direction, execution and recognizing growth opportunities — and less about steady leadership and operations.

And whether Airtime has Parker’s full attention is also up in the air — he is still on six company boards and has a role as a venture investor at Founders Fund, among many other commitments.

Of Airtime’s investors, Kleiner Perkins board member Bing Gordon is most heavily involved, often spending a day at the company per week.

All that said, this mishegas is business as usual for Parker.

“Start-up teams are always in flux, so, like all start-ups, we’re always talking to candidates for various key roles,” he said. “At this point, nothing definitive has been decided.”

A scene from the wacky Airtime launch event

Parker’s wealth and celebrity don’t make running Airtime any easier. When the start-up came to life as Parker’s next act — at a fancy launch event in New York headlined by stars such as Jim Carrey and Olivia Munn — expectations were immediately high.

By the way, Parker disputed the widespread characterization of the event as a ridiculous expense and an embarrassing mishap for a start-up.

The launch was successful, Parker said, because it was widely picked up in the popular press and drove a huge spike in users that helped test the Airtime infrastructure.

And with a straight face, he actually described the New York launch as a “lean scrappy event,” saying many people worked on it for equity and that it was orders of magnitude cheaper than a party he put on for Spotify.

“It did drive traffic — so it worked,” he said, even though growth soon leveled off.

Of the initial product, which connects strangers for live video chats based on their interests, Parker said, “One-to-one is never viral.”

Along with that, Parker said one major issue is that Airtime has been misunderstood as the second coming of Chatroulette, the hot-then-very-not video hookup service.

He noted that while live video chat with random strangers is indeed one aspect of the service, there are also features for calling up Facebook friends, and plans for multiparty, asynchronous and collaborative conversations.

Parker and engineering lead Andrew Lin showed me the newest feature, set to launch later this week, as a demonstration that Airtime continues to push forward.

The site’s new “Reactions” option will allow users to post Webcam videos of themselves watching Internet videos, which friends can sync up while they are watching the original videos.

Thus, when you’re watching a YouTube video within Airtime, and a cat flushes the toilet or the underdog team scores a touchdown, you can see your friend’s face go “Whaa?” or “Yay!” alongside.

Reactions might be a better fit for Parker’s celebrity connections than Airtime was when it initially launched, he pointed out. Stars probably don’t have much interest in chatting with one stranger at a time, but their fans might want to see a close-up of their faces as they get totally grossed out by some stupid human trick on YouTube.

Sean Parker and Andrew Lin show off new Airtime features

It’s an interesting idea, but one still far from the kind of size and scale that many are still expecting.

Indeed, for some tech watchers, Airtime seems like a replay of Color, another start-up with tons of money and a well-known CEO that launched a social serendipity product that didn’t take off, and has had ongoing leadership instability.

Parker said he strongly disputed the comparison to any company that had changed its original vision — what is often call a “pivot” in Silicon Valley.

That’s not what is going on at Airtime, he stressed. Parker said he’s not pivoting as much as making the inevitably painful journey that all important start-ups must make.

“It’s only 12 weeks from launch,” he noted. “I’ve only been running the company since March.”

Airtime is taking the celebrity route again with a new online video ad to promote its fledgling video social discovery service, featuring cameos by Kurt Russell, Ronnie Lott and MC Hammer.

But this time — unlike at its launch event where stars like Joel McHale and Olivia Munn did their best to vamp the start-up out of a string of glitches — the script runs according to plan.

The video is sort of Old Spice Guy meets the Royal Tenenbaums. It’s worth a giggle and another jaw-drop at a start-up making something quite so fancy.

Airtime has just 20,000 daily active users and 130,000 monthly active users, according to AppData, which is surely below the expectations of founders Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning, and investors Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Andreessen Horowitz, Accel Partners, Google Ventures and the Social+Capital Partnership.

Airtime is paying to promote the video on YouTube, but isn’t planning to release it as a TV ad, according to Zach Blume of Portal A, which produced the spot.

At the 10th D: All Things Digital earlier this month, we paired online music’s best known entrepreneurs — Daniel Ek and Sean Parker.

They now work together at Spotify — Ek as CEO and Parker as investor/adviser (he played a similar role in the early days at Facebook).

While they discussed a lot — from the importance of social on the sector to the virtues of playlists on the service — Parker also got off the best zinger against Apple, noting that it might have kept Spotify from landing on U.S. shores for two years.

“There was a sense in which Apple was threatened by what we were doing,” he said.

Here’s the full video of the interview:

Airtime, the next act from Napster co-founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, launches to the public today.

Airtime, the next act from Napster co-founders Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, launches to the public today.

The service is a Web application for person-to-person video calling, with an emphasis on matching people who have common interests.

It has been in the works for nearly two years, and has a clear ancestor in Chatroulette, the anonymous video chatting start-up that Fanning and Parker had advised for a time.

Fanning and Parker gave me a tour of Airtime last week, in preparation for a press launch today that’s sure to be full of razzle-dazzle and celebrities like Snoop Dogg and Kristen Bell.

Like Chatroulette, Airtime also allows for anonymous use, but it is built on top of the Facebook platform and requires a Facebook account. If users behave inappropriately, they are kicked off the service. So the system knows who a user is, whether or not the user elects to share his or her name with a video chatting partner.

It’s unclear if Airtime will work — will people want to use it? Will it fill up with spammers and skeezy dudes? Is it technically sound? But what is clear is that there are high expectations for Parker and Fanning’s next act. Parker, in particular, is now a celebrity figure for his roles at Facebook and Spotify, and from Justin Timberlake’s portrayal of him as a master manipulator in “The Social Network.”

Plus, they’ve now raised more than $35 million in funding, and have been working on this for the past two years without a public release.

But why would we want to video chat with people we don’t know? Parker and Fanning argue that they are helping bring serendipity into a world where people’s online social graphs are set. Airtime is a “social discovery” application for helping people make new friends online, not necessarily for the purpose of dating.

It’s a category with many other companies — for instance, open social networks like Badoo and MeetMe (formerly MyYearbook), video chat companies like ooVoo and Rounds, and mobile location apps like Highlight.

Fanning and Parker think the video aspect of Airtime is particularly important; the medium of synchronous video is highly intimate and reciprocal, tending people away from multitasking and toward reading each other’s body language. There’s no lurking.

The two have a particular challenge in that Airtime will require a significant number of concurrent users — they estimate 5,000 to 10,000 — before users can have a good range of options to find new people. Their own notoriety should help with that — but if not, Airtime will look a lot like the original Color, a start-up with tens of millions in funding and nobody using it.

The Airtime interface looks like a desktop, with a row of available friends on the right side and two video panes in the middle. Users log in through Facebook — Airtime doesn’t even have its own login system.

Then users can ping their existing Facebook friends — it turns out that Airtime is also trying to be a Skype competitor — for a video call, without requiring additional downloaded software beyond Flash. Through integration with XMPP on Facebook, friends will get Airtime alerts through instant message chats, and can click to get to Airtime directly.

Or they can elect to have Airtime find them a conversation partner based on common interests and mutual friends, according to Facebook. In order to combat spam and scamminess, users can’t target chat partners based on a specific interest, or by their gender or age. However, the Airtime system is built to track markers of a successful match, like conversation length, to try to better match people as they use the service more.

Within Airtime, users can watch videos together. They can click to give each other props, prompting a shower of stars on the screen.

What can’t they do? Use Airtime from mobile or share music. An iOS app is weeks away, Parker said, while music deals are on the horizon. Additional planned features are more gamification stuff and video effects, including games built on the Airtime platform, Fanning said.

Another thing Airtime users can’t do is have multiparty chats, though they can conduct multiple one-on-one chats simultaneously. That means it will be harder for Parker and Fanning to use their celebrity connections, like Google has been doing with Google+ Hangouts, where a big star draws a big crowd.

What kind of music do you listen to when you write "The West Wing"? Katie Boehret gets that scoop and more when she catches up with D10 guests, offstage but on camera.

After three days of in-depth interviews at the D10 conference, you might think you know all about the speakers and demonstrators who graced the stage. But what are these people like when they’re not in public?

I caught up with 15 D10 guests and asked them. The results: Aaron Sorkin told me about the music he listens to when he writes, Nathan Myhrvold talked about cooking with a centrifuge, and Sean Parker told me about the book he’s reading.

Day Two at D10, in Tweets and Pictures

Storified by Eric Scott Johnson · Thu, May 31 2012 02:08:57

Two days down and only one to go at the 10th annual D: All Things Digital conference. But the interviews, written recaps and highlight videos are only part of the story – here’s a timeline of today’s goings-on through the eyes of our writers, conference attendees and online followers.

One surprise at D is the durability of the Blackberry. See it everywhere. #ATD10Nick Wingfield

In hours, Tim Cook’s words at #D10 have been dissected & construed 3 times as much as Nostradamus’ Prophecies in centuries. /cc @madeupstatsMichael Burgstahler

Fueling up for the day ahead #atd10 http://instagr.am/p/LQTKKLmxKO/Lance Ulanoff

undefinedInstagram

At #D10. Nearly a stampede at door to main hall to see Mary Meeker. She goes on soon.Rafe Needleman

Mary Meeker Explains the Mobile Monetization ChallengeLooming over the Internet industry is the mismatch between the growth in mobile usage and mobile monetization. Most recently, it was the …

undefinedInstagram

Mary Meeker is the first to be allowed a Power Point at #ATD10. Not even Steve Jobs or Bill Gates got that. :PBo Hee Kim

Mary Meeker’s always-amazing PowerPoint on the Internet economy leads off the day at #D10…she’s focused on mobile this year…Dan Gillmor

Meeker is running through all the standard things in life that are being upended by Internet, from note-taking to hailing a cab etc #D10Rafe Needleman

The slides of her excellent (and fast!) presentation went up on AllThingsD at the same time:

Mary Meeker’s Internet Trends, Live at D10 (Slides)This year, Mary Meeker brings her famous annual Internet Trends report to D10, where she just appeared onstage. Meeker, a partner at Klei…

The Internet is down at BOTH @BuzzFeed and @Mashable. Must all be going to Meeker’s preso @ #D10. http://allthingsd.com/conferences/d/d10/livestream/Eric Meyerson

With few detractors, overall opinion on Meeker’s presentation was positive:

Mary Meeker is brilliant, but describing the U.S. as a corporation is misguided… #D10Dan Gillmor

Mary Meeker, ever always amazing fun #ATD10 #inJim Porter

Mary Meeker Talks About How Digital Is Changing EverythingWe all hear it every day: The Internet and digital technologies are changing everything. It’s become one of those big pronouncements that…

Surprise. Meeker defends Morgan Stanley and Facebook IPO process. Blames initial sell-off in part on the Nasdaq trading problems. #ATD10Troy Wolverton

Meeker: Facebook will do very well over time. #D10 (maybe so, but doesn’t justify the sleaze in the IPODan Gillmor

Meeker: I gave up on US as a global mobile phone player 5 years ago. Now 63% of mobile phones are running OSes built in US. #D10Rafe Needleman

Mary Meeker’s juxtaposition of herself at 5 and her young niece really struck me. Chalkboards and Apps. #ATD10Drake Martinet

Mary Meeker on a Five-Year Old’s Favorite AppsWhat were you doing when you were five years old? Consider the experience of Mary Meeker’s neice. Asked during a question-and-answer sess…

I cannot say enough about Mary Meeker’s presentation at @ #ATD10 — Just f—ing incredible. Must read for mobile naysayers.Rocco Pendola

@thenetworkhub Based on Mary Meeker’s #ATD10 stats I realize 100 years from now archaeologists will find no remnants of our culture.Morten R-H

Maybe if they’re looking for something to dig up by then, Zynga will have made an ArchaeologyVille game. Just ask the next guest, Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus:

Live Onstage: Zynga’s Founder and CEO Mark PincusFarmVille. CityVille. Words with Friends. Zynga is responsible for developing some of the most-played games of the decade. As the founder…

Doubling down CEO term of #atd10 Cook used it multiple times and now Mark Pincus of Zynga says they are doubling down on FB.Lois Paul

Mark Pincus on Zynga’s Symbiotic Relationship With FacebookZynga’s road to succes owes much to Facebook – the social giant has been by far the largest driver of traffic to Zynga’s gaming platform….

#karaswisher @karaswisher #atd10 admits she plays #wordswithfriends what’s her winning streak?ClaudiaCarasso

Lots of pauses and vagueness from Pincus, in response to @karaswisher’s question about buying Angry Birds #ATD10Lauren Goode

Mark Pincus Zynga CEO said he wants to be a game network like Xbox live. Smart. #atd10Doug Bennett

Zynga CEO says company won’t do consoles. Too much friction. All about reaching masses. #ATD10Mark Spoonauer

undefinedInstagram

"players to payers" – mark pincus expression for gamers who spend or new rap song? #ATD10Nick Wingfield

Gaming can be a poke with a purpose. #ATD10 mark pincusDoug Llewellyn

And then, it was time for something completely different …

Never thought I’d ever witness this: bra fitting at #atd10Bill Hankes

True&Co Aims to Be the Bonobos of the Bra WorldIt’s been said that women in tech could use more support. Two entrepreneurs have taken that quite literally, launching a lingerie Web sit…

Bras are far more complicated than I could have ever imagined. #atd10Mike Isaac

Can’t resist — Once again #ATD10 is keeping us "abreast" of latest technology with True&CoLarry Magid

Demo of bra app at #ATD10. Maybe conf should be named All Things D CupSteven Levy

Demonstration of web-based bra fitting tech at #ATD10 has got to be making 80% of the audience really uncomfortable.Dylan Tweney

After a break, though, the jokes about undergarments had to come to an end. It was time to talk patents with so-called “patent troll” Nathan Myhrvold:

Intellectual Ventures CEO Nathan Myhrvold Live at D10"Thomas Edison’s business model was very similar to ours." That’s how Nathan Myhrvold, CEO of Intellectual Ventures, described the compan…

Interesting thing about Myhrvold is that while he gets grief for being a patent troll, his company does also invent things. #ATD10Jason Snell

Cook, Meeker, Myhrvold… Theme at #ATD10 this year seems to be IQ.Lee Milstein

Intellectual Ventures CEO Nathan Myhrvold "two of our inventors will win the Nobel prize… Or should" #ATD10johnelton

Big audience applause for @waltmossberg pushing Nathan Myhrvold on Intellectual Ventures’s troll-like behavior. #ATD10Lee Milstein

Myhrvold: Nobody does pure research anymore. Google has R&D, but not R. #ATD10Rafe Needleman

If you’re expecting a Perry Mason-style breakdown, where Myhrvold sobs and admits that patents are bad, you will be disappointed. #ATD10Jason Snell

Nathan Myhrvold believes in what he believes and he’s great at defending his thesis. #atd10triciad

I’m having a really violent emotional reaction to Myhrvold’s rhetoric, and I think a lot of the audience is the same. #atd10Alexia Tsotsis

#ATD10 the simple truth: we are scared of myrhvold’s patent portfolio. I fear the cease and desist note for a patent I didn’t know existed.Brian O’Kelley

Nathan Myhrvold on Being the Most Unpopular Guy at D10Nathan Myhrvold knows that he is one of the least popular guests at this week’s D: All Things Digital conference and, that’s OK with him….

He has a patent on entitlement, so watch out. RT @triciad Myhrovld says animosity people have for him due to a sense of entitlement. #atd10Chris Taylor

Once patent owned, offense/defense can change any moment. RT @dangillmor: They buy patent portfolios for defense, not offense #D10Dan Farfan

Agree with him or not, Nathan Myhrvold was entertaining, cogent, and witty in defense of software patents. #ATD10Brad Silverberg

Intellectual Ventures Nathan Myhrvold Talks Nuclear Reactors and Patents (Video)Intellectual Ventures is often criticized for being a patent troll, but Nathan Myhrvold talked on Wednesday about a couple of the actual …

And next, Otoy wowed the crowd with super-fast animation rendering:

2nd startup of #atd10 Second startup with a female co-founder (prior one was 2 cofounding women). Brava @karaswisher & @waltmossbergCathy Brooks

Animation rendering in the cloud demo is amazing from OTOY here at D @tiffanyshlain u must check it out #atd10TinaSharkey

Otoy Takes Movie Production to the CloudIf you have dreams of creating the next Hollywood blockbuster but don’t have the budget of a big movie studio, a company called Otoy want…

Otoy doing a WOW demo. Tech radically lowering cost of film and game making #atd10Jeff Berman

Breaking: Nathan Myhrvold just bought Otoy’s patents. #atd10Jeff Berman

After the OTOY demo, a new guest to D — screenwriter Aaron Sorkin — took the stage:

Here’s Aaron Sorkin! Coming out to the "West Wing" theme! #ATD10Jason Snell

undefinedInstagram

Aaron Sorkin, Live at D10Hollywood edict: If you want to make a movie about a Silicon Valley legend, you need to hire Aaron Sorkin. The writer took on Mark Zucker…

Aaron Sorkin. Best interview yet at #atd10. Valley guys need media trainin,g apparentlyDana Stalder

Aaron Sorkin: anytime you see the words "based on a true story", you should expect a painting not a photograph. #atd10Gary Kovacs

Aaron Sorkin: Making a Movie About Steve Jobs Is Like Writing About the BeatlesDon’t expect a cradle-to-grave depiction of Steve Jobs’ life from his upcoming movie, said Aaron Sorkin, who has signed on to write the w…

With so many things competing for attention, he says he just seeks to make as good a show as he possibly can. (Aaron Sorkin) AMEN. #atd10jenkavs

undefinedInstagram

Loving that Aaron Sorkin in trending. Thanks #ATD10.Kristin Mason

You’re welcome.

Aaron Sorkin "doubling-down" on promoting his new HBO show premiering Sunday, June 24th! #atd10Gozer69

And All Things D got to continue the conversation with Sorkin after the interview ended:

Bruce Springsteen and the Sound of Intelligence – Aaron Sorkin Shares a Little About His Writing ProcessAfter a candid conversation on the D conference stage, Aaron Sorkin spent a few minutes with AllThingsD’s Katie Boehret and shared a litt…

Meanwhile, though, it was time for LinkedIn’s dynamic duo of Jeff Weiner and Reid Hoffman:

Reid Hoffman and Jeff Weiner on LinkedIn, Perhaps the Only Even-Keeled Consumer Internet CompanyControversy and histrionics is not what you’ll get in a conversation with LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner and Chairman Reid Hoffman. Instead, th…

Things started off on a funny note:

Very funny @LinkedIn video at #ATD10aneel bhusri

LinkedIn Makes a Funny: Here’s the LOL-worthy Marketing Parody Video From D10LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner and Chairman Reid Hoffman today came to D10 and had a very serious conversation about their business. But first …

And then got a bit more serious with a look at why LinkedIn has been successful, with a look toward the future of professional identity.

Took this LinkedIn interview to make me realize I need to change my profile #atd10Joanna Stern

Kara Swisher: I mostly use LinkedIn to find out which Yahoo execs are leaving. #ATD10Rafe Needleman

Great analogy from @jeffweiner. IPO day is like weather on your wedding day. You remember it but to doesn’t matter in long run #ATD10aneel bhusri

Reid Hoffman and Jeff Weiner on stage at AllThingsD performing a convincing duet #atd10Hans Peter Brondmo

LinkedIn’s Co-Founder Reid Hoffman Says Social Innovation isn’t OverDespite large scale successes by Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, innovation in the social networking sector is alive and well. Reid Hoffm…

LinkedIn Execs Discuss Being the Entrepreneur of Your Own Life at D10 (Video)Reid Hoffman said people benefit from using LinkedIn three ways: It allows them to be "the entrepreneur of their own life," "the CEO of t…

@jeffweiner says 3.7m open jobs in the US, 22.7M Americans underemployed or not looking. That’s the other jobs crisis. #ATD10Sam Whitmore

And speaking of the future, Spotify claims to be the future of music. But Daniel Ek and Sean Parker got an old-fashioned welcome:

HAHAHA :) @jamesjoaquin: "Spotify interview starts with "Play that funky music white boy" by Wild Cherry. #ATD10"Fredrik Rittberger

undefinedInstagram

Woah: Sean Parker says there was some indication that Apple tried to keep Spotify out of the US market #ATD10alexei oreskovic

Sean Parker: Why’d Spotify Take So Long to Get Stateside? It Could Have Been Apple. Before Spotify finally hit the United States less than a year ago, streaming music proponents the world around lauded the company. But wh…

Sean Parker and Daniel Ek on Apple, Playlists, and the End of the CD: The D10 Highlights (Video)As streaming music services rise in popularity and more files are stored up in the cloud, Sean Parker and Daniel Ek want to make one thin…

During the break, guests got some fresh air — and refreshments.

undefinedInstagram

undefinedInstagram

I need to double down on iced coffee #atd10Joanna Stern

The first guest of the next session, Pixar President Ed Catmull, spoke extensively about his company’s learning process, including what Pixar learned from Steve Jobs:

Ed Catmull When we started pixar none of us knew anything including #stevejobs #atd10ClaudiaCarasso

undefinedInstagram

And Catmull previewed Pixar’s next upcoming film, “Brave”:

With 3 girls nice to hear Pixar will have their first female lead #ATD10johnelton

Pixar’s Ed Catmull Live at D10With the release of "Toy Story" in 1995, Ed Catmull, president and co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios and president of Walt Disney Ani…

Seen-it-all #atd10 crowd paying close attention to Pixar’s Ed Catmull. Everyone’s a fanboy for this session.Peter Kafka

But if the staff was impressed by Catmull, they were even more taken by the following act, Oracle’s colorful CEO, Larry Ellison:

Oracle CEO Larry Ellison Live at D10There are few characters more colorful in the history of Silicon Valley than Larry Ellison. The CEO and founder of the enterprise softwar…

undefinedInstagram

Ellison quickly raised a few eyebrows with his statements about macro tech trends:

"They don’t call it the Internet any more. They call it cloud computing." -Larry Ellison #atd10Matt MacInnis

What??? *insert WTF meme here* RT @inafried: Oracle CEO Larry Ellison: I think the Internet was kind of the last big change in tech. #ATD10Argenis Fernandez

Watching Marc Benioff smirk at Larry Ellison’s #atd10 talk from the audience. The cloud, says Ellison, isn’t new — it’s smart branding.Mike Isaac

Damn, that’s a big phone RT @kabster728: Larry Ellison predicts that tablets and smartphones will be much bigger than PCs. #ATD10Christopher Trout

And, at first, it seemed like it would be a relatively calm interview …

Larry Ellison is usually wound up. In early days, he would have shouting matches with Ed Esber of Ashton Tate at industry conferences #atd10Eric Hippeau

… but not six minutes later, things changed (for the better):

"I’m not going to call him Léo. I’m going to call him Leo." –Larry Ellison really doesn’t like Mr. Apotheker #atd10Dylan Tweney

LEO…L-e-o…..Laa-oo #atd10Nitin Badjatia

Larry Ellison just did a 3-minute stand-up at #atd10 putting down Leo Apotheker.Rob

Larry Ellison owns Tim Cook when it comes to giving an entertaining interview. @karaswisher doing a great job. #ATD10Sriram Krishnan

And now Larry Ellison pulls off the rubber mask. Yep, it was Robert Downey Jr. all along. #atd10Peter Kafka

OK @karaswisher & @waltmossberg have to bring back Larry Ellison every year #atd10Eric Hippeau

I have not been this excited about enterprise since I got that free car rental Groupon last summer. #atd10Mike Isaac

After the high of Larry Ellison, it was time to take a breath and remember a tech titan and D regular who is no longer with us:

Remembering the Legacy of Apple CEO Steve Jobs at D10For better or worse, much of D10 has been a reflection on the legacy of Steve Jobs, the iconic Apple founder who died last year. However,…

What a thoughtful, lovely tribute #atd10: video of all Steve Jobs’ @allthingsd interviews, 100% free on iTunes http://bit.ly/KJf24TLaura Janes

This whole #d10 feels a little like a tribute to Steve Jobs. Heartfelt, not ironic. Tribute to a life force for the industry.John Lilly

All things D is more like All things Steve – not that I’m complaining #d10phil barrett

undefinedInstagram

And here’s what Steve looked like at D1 in 2003:

undefinedInstagram

After a panel that extended the talks with Ellison and Catmull — both close friends of Jobs – it was time for dinner outside at the Terranea Resort’s main swimming pool:

undefinedInstagram

But the night wasn’t over. To close out the day’s interviews, Kara and Walt welcomed Hollywood power player (and Ari-Gold-from-”Entourage”-inspiration) Ari Emanuel:

undefinedInstagram

undefinedInstagram

I honestly think the real Ari Emanuel may be cooler then the @HBO Entourage one #ATD10.Jason Knapp

I want [Google] to start filtering stolen content, says Emanuel. That is their responsibility. #ATD10Bo Hee Kim

And, like Ellison, a slow start quickly reached an extremely entertaining crescendo:

Yyeeeeeesssss! Ari Emanuel is riled up!! #ATD10Katie Boehret

"That was a stupid example" Ari Emanuel calls it the way it is – I want to see him throw a punch! #ATD10Kevin Conroy

"Go sit down and think of something else and come back up so I can yell at you again," Emanuel to unfortunate questioner. #ATD10Bo Hee Kim

Nightcap = What Ari Emanuel is going to put in @joshualtopolsky after he gets off stage at #atd10 .Ina Fried

First time i’ve seen a D guest essentially banish a questioner from his presence #atd10John Paczkowski

It took about 45 minutes for Ari Emanuel to completely lose it. Amazing restraint from him #ATD10Eric Hippeau

I’m enjoying this "unscripted" show. Thanks Ari. #ATD10Bo Hee Kim

It’s no understatement to say that Emanuel’s day-ender was popular with the audience, and on Twitter:

This.is.awesome. #ATD10Jason Knapp

So, how could D11 be any better? One Twitter follower gave us a great idea:

Enjoying all the tweets from #ATD10. Only way they’d be better is if I could get Aaron Sorkin to edit them for Christopher Walken to read.Nick Lorenzen

And, on that note, let’s call it a night. We may have a few calls to make in the morning …

As streaming music services rise in popularity and more files are stored up in the cloud, Sean Parker and Daniel Ek want to make one thing clear: The CD is dead and gone. The playlist is the new CD.

That much makes sense, given that the two are the main proponents behind Spotify, one of the largest active streaming music services available.

However popular, though, not everyone is in love with Spotify: There are questions of artists being dissatisfied with the compensation they receive from the labels who license their music to Spotify. And there’s also the possibility that Apple played a role in keeping Spotify out of the U.S. for more than two years.

Check out the highlights from Parker and Ek in conversation with Walt Mossberg at our D: All Things Digital conference:

Spotify has a lot of buzz and a bunch of users, but it's not a mainstream service by any means.

Spotify has a lot of buzz and a bunch of users, but it’s not a mainstream service by any means. So think of today’s D10 interview with CEO Daniel Ek and investor/adviser Sean Parker as a Spotify primer: Walt Mossberg got the two men to explain exactly how the streaming music service works, and why they think it’s going to be a truly big deal.

The big idea: You can listen to the service for free, on your PC, with some limited exceptions. But if you want to take your music with you on an iPhone or Android, you’ll pay for the privilege.

“People pay for portability when it comes to music, and they’ve always done it,” Ek argued.

This model spooked the big music labels for some time, because they worried that Spotify users would stop paying for music. But Spotify says many of its users stopped paying for music a long time ago — they were stealing it. A Spotify customer, they argue, isn’t a lost iTunes buyer or a lost CD buyer — it’s a converted pirate.

But if this model truly does take off, couldn’t Apple, Amazon or Google do the same thing and cause a lot of problems for the upstarts? Sure, Ek says. But he argues that Spotify already benefits from big network effects (thanks in part to a big push from Facebook, another Sean Parker project) and shared playlists that keep the service sticky. “The real value of Spotify is not that we have 18 millions songs,” he said. “The value is we have 700 million playlists and counting.”

That said, people in and outside of Spotify have argued for some time that Apple in particular was not happy to see Spotify’s rise, and today Parker finally talked about that out loud. “There was a sense in which Apple was threatened by what we were doing,” he said.

Here are some of the highlights:

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=F1259047-0CF7-430D-BB98-51A930D3B0F2&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

The Spotify exec gets feisty with the Cupertino company onstage.

Asa Mathat / AllThingsD.com

Before Spotify finally hit the U.S. less than a year ago, streaming-music proponents the world around lauded the company. But while the app was available in Europe and other countries since 2010, it took an extra two-and-a-half years to get Stateside.

Popular knowledge assumed this was because of hang-ups and legal issues with the four major U.S. labels. But another back-channel rumor persisted, one that Sean Parker says could be true: Apple had something to do with keeping Spotify out of the States.

“There was some indication that that might have been happening,” Sean Parker told Walt Mossberg on stage at D: All Things Digital. “You hear things, people send you emails.”

Though Spotify CEO Daniel Ek didn’t comment, Parker was more forthcoming on Apple’s role: “There was a sense in which Apple was threatened by what we were doing,” Parker said.

Even if it were true, Parker admits, Apple has bigger fish to fry than being completely hung up on Spotify.”[Music] is still such a small part of their overall business, it wouldn’t be hugely significant to their bottom line,” he said.

But, admits Parker, even if only a fraction of its business, Apple hasn’t been shy about asserting its position in the music business: “It’s certainly a much smaller industry than it was 12 years ago,” Parker said.

Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning's Airtime has invited media to a launch event in New York City on June 5.

Airtime, the long-awaited new start-up from Napster founders Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning, finally plans to show its face to the public. Today the company invited media to a launch event in New York City on June 5.

Airtime is to be a live video platform built around meeting new people. The site is currently accepting signups via Facebook Connect.

Parker and Fanning had previously tried to work with and even buy Chatroulette — the anonymous webcam pairing site built by a Russian teenager that sparked a zeitgeisty desire for online serendipity in 2010, and then was overrun by naked dudes — but that deal fell apart.

One thing to watch for with Airtime is how the service negotiates between anonymity and real identity sharing. Here’s a hint from the site’s privacy policy:

Your name is not shared when you are paired with a stranger. However, your Airtime and Facebook friends will be able to directly call you and see when you are online. You may edit or delete your interest information on Airtime and modify your profile information to increase anonymity.

Airtime’s investors include Founders Fund, Accel Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, Google Ventures, SV Angel, Yuri Milner, Ashton Kutcher, will.i.am, Scott Braun and Michael Arrington.

The week in photos.

SXSW Interactive is, thankfully, almost over. We came, we saw, we ate from food trucks. We stood in lines in the rain (grudgingly wearing branded ponchos), we strained our eyes and ears for any slivers of news that might come out of the panels, and we got more texts and buzzes and pings from our phones’ location-based and messaging apps than we thought was technically possible.

We learned that video games are good for you, that TV has ruined politics in the U.S. and that social media should fix it, and that Jimmy Fallon has different activities in mind when he thinks of “activity wristbands.” We learned how to be disruptive. We heard Google’s designers explain how they convinced their company to take on that infamous redesign.

We identified one of the worst marketing gimmicks in all of Austin (aside from this controversial one), and heard about all the crazy tasks SXSW-ers hired people to do for them. We learned that an impromptu Jay-Z concert will light up Twitter like it’s Arab Spring in Austin.
Upset about money and television's dominance of American politics, Al Gore today called on SXSW attendees to "Occupy Democracy."

“Our democracy has been hacked,” said former U.S. Vice President and investor Al Gore today at SXSW today. Serial Internet entrepreneur and investor Sean Parker prefers the term “co-opted,” but he agreed.

“In the print era, when this country was founded, reason and truth and facts played a bigger role,” Gore said. Now, television and money have overtaken the American political system and lowered the level of discourse, both he and Parker said, in an interview that was added to the schedule of the Austin-based interactive conference over the weekend.

The two men said they think social media can make campaigns and governments more efficient, vetted and more democratic.

“I would like to see a new movement called ‘Occupy Democracy,’ where people who are Internet-savvy remedy this situation,” Gore said (by the way, he co-founded Current TV, so I assume they’re excluded from the rant about television).

“We are in the early days of using the power of social media to activate people,” Parker replied. “Just having large numbers of people on social media doesn’t mean we’re going to do anything more than create virtual farms and innovate newer and more psychologically addictive ways of wasting people’s time.”

He said he thought tools that help voters become more educated and mobilize around elections at all levels could combat the role of campaign spending. “Money is just a proxy to buy votes,” Parker said.

The two plugged various political Internet start-ups — mostly Parker investments — such as NationBuilder, Votizen, Causes and Electionear (see our recent coverage of NationBuilder and Votizen).

Gore also called for a big-data-style approach, in the manner of CompStat, for vetting the American health care system. And he asked those in attendance to continue to activate for net neutrality and against Internet censorship.

Before the people who are currently in power figure out how to use social media, Parker said, “there may be a window of opportunity to take back the system.”

Parker said he thought the SOPA and PIPA protests had awakened the technology industry from its apathy, and perhaps even beyond “armchair activism.”

“I call it the ‘Nerd Spring,’ kind of like the Arab Spring, but the SXSW version of it,” Parker said.

Speakers? We got your speakers right here.

Even though our D: All Things Digital conference always sells out well in advance every year without our announcing even one single speaker (like this one, too), it’s the action on stage that truly matters.

And in 2012 — which also happens to be the 10th anniversary of the confab of tech and media titans — it’s already shaping up to be another fantastic event in terms of programming, with a lineup of onstage appearances that is sure to make some news.

There are many more very big names to come, but Walt Mossberg and I are pleased to introduce the first group of interviewees, which will give you a glimpse into the firepower we expect at D10 in late May. It is again being held in Rancho Palos Verdes, just south of Los Angeles.

The initial speakers we have confirmed so far include: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; serial entrepreneur Sean Parker, who will appear with Spotify co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek; Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus; Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz; LinkedIn Chairman and VC Reid Hoffman, who will appear with LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner; and Skype CEO Tony Bates.

It’s hard to imagine someone we have wanted to have onstage more than Michael Bloomberg, a man of many talents and interests. He’s known worldwide as the 108th Mayor of the City of New York. First elected in November 2001 (and again in 2005 and 2009), he is also one of the most compelling politicians in the U.S. today.

But Bloomberg is also a pioneer in terms of the business of digital news and information technology, having built a huge and groundbreaking media company and information service. Bloomberg (the company) has 310,000 subscribers to its financial news and information service, and more than 15,000 employees worldwide.

There will be a lot to talk about with him, from the upcoming presidential election to the state of our government to the future of innovation, news and technology.

Also sure to be voluble is Sean Parker, the legendary Silicon Valley entrepreneur who has been on the cutting edge of innumerable important digital trends of the recent decade. In 1999, Parker co-founded Napster, the controversial and industry-changing music service, at the age of 19.

He followed up with early contact information service Plaxo, and then shifted over to his critical involvement as founding president of Facebook in its early days as a start-up, an experience which was dramatized in the movie “The Social Network.” Parker continued to found and also invest in companies, from Causes to Spotify to his most recent, Airtime, a social video company that he is doing with his Napster co-founder Shawn Fanning.

Parker will be appearing onstage with Daniel Ek, another serial entrepreneur and technologist, who started his first company in 1997 at the age of 14. The Swedish native later co-founded online music phenom Spotify in 2006, with Martin Lorentzon.

The former CTO of Stardoll and founder of Advertigo leads a company that is changing the way music is delivered and consumed by fans, against a backdrop of intense change in the industry, succeeding even as a plethora of other services have stumbled.

Also a groundbreaker is Zynga CEO and founder Mark Pincus, yet another serial entrepreneur, whose latest effort in the online gaming arena has finally resulted in his biggest success. It recently went public, and now has a nearly $10 billion market cap.

Before founding Zynga in 2007, Pincus had already started three other companies: Push start-up Freeloader in 1995; automated tech-support company Support.com after that; and early social networking site Tribe.net in 2003.

(I met Pincus when he was at Freeloader in Washington, D.C., while writing a profile of him for the Washington Post, so I have enjoyed tracking his progress since then.)

Pincus is also an avid angel investor, with early stakes in Napster, Brightmail, Twitter and Facebook.

Reid Hoffman was another early investor in Facebook, along with many of Web 2.0’s most successful ventures. Well-known in Silicon Valley as an entrepreneur and VC, and recently dubbed the “start-up whisperer” by the New York Times (although I am not sure exactly what that means), he’s also chairman of LinkedIn, the business-networking service that also recently went public (at a $10 billion valuation, too).

He’ll appear with LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, who started out life in Hollywood, but soon made his way to Silicon Valley as a top exec at Yahoo. After running its media division, Weiner spent a short time at venture firms before going operational again at LinkedIn.

What it takes to build and maintain momentum as tech companies move into more mature stages, as well as how the social networking space evolves, are among the many topics on tap for the pair.

The evolution of a start-up phenom — in this case, Internet telephony service Skype — will be among the topics covered by Tony Bates, who is now a president at Microsoft, which bought it last year.

As such, he is responsible, says the software giant in its description of his job, “for overseeing the company’s direction, strategy and overall mission to become a global communications service that will eventually reach billions of users.”

That’s a tall order for Bates, who came to Skype from a top job at Cisco. Bates has deep roots (or maybe, routing?) in the guts of the Internet, having done backbone-engineering strategy for Internet MCI. The U.K. native also holds nine patents.

Lastly, given all the activity we expect will happen between government regulatory agencies and tech companies over the next few years, we felt it was key to bring in FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz. He has been at the FTC as a commissioner since 2004, but was given the top job by President Barack Obama in 2009.

Among his priorities, according to his bio, is “promoting competition and innovation in the technology sector through law enforcement and policy initiatives; and protecting consumers’ privacy — especially while they are using the Internet.”

Uh-oh!

Leibowitz knows from regulation, having served as the Democratic chief counsel and staff director for the U.S. Senate Antitrust Subcommittee from 1997 to 2000, where he focused on competition policy and telecommunications matters, as well as a similar stint at the Senate Subcommittee on Terrorism and Technology before that.

There will be a lot more speakers to come, of course. But, so far, we think D10 is off and running fast.

Andreessen Horowitz has invested $6.25 million in NationBuilder, which sells enterprise software for community organizing to politicians.

Marc Andreessen declared last year that “software is eating the world.” Examples like Amazon “eating” the book industry, and Skype “eating” telecom make sense, but can software really transform the crazy business of politics? That’s what Andreessen’s firm, Andreessen Horowitz, is now betting, with a $6.25 million bet on NationBuilder, which sells enterprise software to politicians for community organizing.

While politics is NationBuilder’s initial focus, it’s already being used by filmmakers as well. The company helps customers run their Web sites, with tools for both content production and user engagement and retention. For instance, one feature offers a “political currency” system that assigns point values to all sorts of actions on each site.

NationBuilder costs $19 per month for communities with fewer than 10,000 users, and more for larger communities, like that of Newark mayor Cory Booker and Newt Gingrich’s New Hampshire primary campaign. It currently has 500 “nations” with 2 million supporters.

NationBuilder was founded in 2009 by Jim Gilliam, a remarkable guy who started online movements around his own double lung transplant and documentaries for Brave New Films.

Gilliam said his main competition is consulting firms that build sites for politicians, often with a focus on Democrat or Republican candidates. These products tend to be expensive and get obsolete fast, and campaigns that want to experiment with new things like texting their supporters have had to invest in separate tools. Plus, tools aimed at getting someone elected are often different from those aimed at helping someone govern. Not so with NationBuilder.

In addition to Andreessen Horowitz, whose Ben Horowitz is taking a seat on NationBuilder’s board of directors, other prominent folks getting involved in NationBuilder include Causes founder Joe Green, who is joining as president, and investor Sean Parker, who is also now on the board. Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes was a NationBuilder seed investor, while Parker is heavily involved in another online politics start-up called Votizen. Green, Parker and Hughes were all involved in the early days of Facebook.

Horowitz said he believes NationBuilder does fit the “software eats the world” thesis, even if politics might seem a bit far afield from his firm’s expertise. What he’s particularly interested in is NationBuilder’s focus on activism and participation. “NationBuilder solves the hard part,” Horowitz said. “People are excited, but then what do they do?”

The latest political donation in this election year, from Sean Parker, Ashton Kutcher and other celebrity tech investors, is a $750,000 convertible note to political social network Votizen.

American politics in the age of the Super PAC is all about money. But meanwhile over on the Internet, connecting and mobilizing networks of people is easier than ever.

(See: the SOPA and PIPA online protests, the Planned Parenthood-Susan G. Komen dustup, the Occupy movement and the Arab Spring.)

Investors, including Internet impresario Sean Parker, think that sounds like an opportunity for disruption. “Politics is one of the few remaining large-scale consumer-facing opportunities on the Internet,” he said in an interview with AllThingsD. “It’s a very interesting moment, where politics is a bit behind the rest of the economy in embracing these new technologies.”

Sean Parker

Parker — who played crucial roles at Facebook, Spotify and Napster, and also co-founded the lesser-known nonprofit fundraising app, Causes — is now hoping to make an impact on politics with an investment in Votizen, a company founded by tech geeks with political stripes.

Votizen spent much of the last two years digitizing 200 million U.S. voting records from magnetic tape, computer databases and spreadsheets. Though it only has tens of thousand of members who have registered and connected to their voter profiles, it is trying to push out products and attract users in time to get involved with this year’s general election.

Parker first invested in Votizen with his venture capital firm Founders Fund in 2010, and also just personally took part in a new $750,000 convertible round with a set of celebrity investors who can raise Votizen’s profile with the push of a tweet button.

They are Ashton Kutcher, Guy Oseary and Ron Burkle’s A-Grade Investments, and Lady Gaga manager Troy Carter.

Votizen co-founders David Binetti and Jason Putorti

The latest round, which also included venture debt investor Hercules Technology Growth Capital, just closed last week. It brings Votizen to $2.25 million in total funding.

Votizen CEO David Binetti, who formerly founded USA.gov, says he’s aiming to capitalize on peer pressure — in a good way. Instead of money buying votes, Votizen will help friends persuade friends.

People who join Votizen can see voters from their own Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn networks. Then, Votizen will do things like highlight which friends are in swing states or certain political parties, and help users contact them to plead their case.

“Today, people feel rich people and lobbyists get in the way of their interests,” Binetti said. “We’re disrupting the currency of politics with ‘friendraising’ over fundraising. The goal is to make it harder for money to have an effect.”

According to various estimates, online spending in the 2012 election will be somewhere between $1 and $1.5 billion, up from $177 million in 2008.

While voter registration is a matter of public record, personal politics might not necessarily be something everyone will feel comfortable discussing online.

Votizen co-founder Jason Putorti — who was formerly lead designer at the personal finance site Mint.com — said he thinks that people will become more transparent about politics over time. “The new generation knows sharing leads to benefits,” he said.

Outside of election cycles, Votizen intends to help users get involved in ongoing public policy by writing officials and mobilizing groups around issues. Users can also create personal “cabinets” of advisors built from politically savvy people in their friend networks.

Eventually, Votizen hopes politicians and activists will pay to reach people in certain regions or interest groups, similar to the way LinkedIn makes money by charging users to contact people they don’t know.

Jon Irwin's music service has been at it for 10 years, and it doesn't get anything like the attention that the new guys get. But, at the very least, he is holding is own.

Jon Irwin is not pals with Sean Parker. He doesn’t hold splashy press conferences. He hasn’t been on the cover of Forbes.

But for now, at least, he can claim a bragging right that Spotify’s Daniel Ek doesn’t have: The CEO of Rhapsody has more paying subscribers than any other digital music service in the U.S.

Probably, that is. We can get into the numbers in a minute. But at the very least, Irwin argues, his company ought to get a bit of the attention that Spotify does.

They’re both doing the same thing, after all — trying to get consumers to pony up $10 a month for an ad-free service that lets you listen to any music you want, on your iPhone or (just about) any other device.

The big difference between the two is that while Rhapsody offers users a free trial period to sample the service, Ek’s company will let you listen to music for free forever.

That offer comes with advertising, and some restrictions — you can only do it for a certain number of hours per month, and you can’t take it with you. But that free offer, in conjunction with a big push from Facebook, is the real reason that so many people have heard about Spotify recently. Free, legal music is a pretty compelling offer.

Why hasn’t Rhapsody gone that route? Irwin has a long answer for that, but the short one is that he doesn’t think Spotify’s freemium model can convert enough subscribers to cover the costs of the music it gives away. The Spotify camp argues otherwise, but we’re not going to get an authoritative answer for some time.

In the meantime, Irwin can take can comfort in the fact that he has more Americans paying for his service than Ek does.

He thinks. Irwin says he passed the one-million mark at the end of last year. And while Spotify hasn’t broken out its U.S. subscriber total, we can guess that it has less than that. At the end of November, it said that it had 2.5 million paying subscribers worldwide. That’s 900,000 more than the 1.6 million it said it had in June, and that growth hasn’t all come in the U.S., because Facebook has been promoting the service everywhere.

Now, back to the future. Spotify is likely to keep growing for a while, thanks to that Facebook firehose, as well as international expansion — my bet is that Ek opens shop in Germany fairly soon.

But Irwin thinks that both companies are going to end up needing help from partners with much bigger reach — cable guys like Comcast, or wireless giants like Verizon — if they’re going to get real scale.

He explains in this interview we conducted yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show:

Early Facebook exec Parker and Accel partner Breyer claim that freely available money spreads talent too thinly among too many Internet start-ups, lessening the impact of each company.

Early Facebook exec Sean Parker and Accel partner Jim Breyer today criticized the surplus of early-stage funding in Silicon Valley, saying that freely available money spreads talent too thinly among too many Internet start-ups and makes it less likely for new companies to have a major industry impact.

Sean Parker and Jim Breyer with Techonomy host David Kirkpatrick

“A lot of those early-stage investors, they’ll fund literally anything” Parker said, calling the phenomenon “the assembly line approach to investing,” where an idea comes in and an investment comes out. Meanwhile, later-stage investors are themselves funding early-stage investors to access their deal flow.

Breyer, who is a Facebook board member and an investor in Parker’s pre-launch start-up Airtime, agreed with Parker and said the early-stage frenzy “will end badly.”

Breyer noted that the “spray-and-pray” mentality is especially prevalent in Silicon Valley and somewhat present in New York City and Beijing, but thankfully not in the rest of the world.

The two men’s comments came as part of a discussion about jobs and the social impact of technology at the Techonomy conference in Tucson, Ariz.

Parker admitted that the icon of rapid-fire angel investing, Ron Conway of SV Angel, is a close friend and an investor in every company he’s started.

But that doesn’t mean the world needs more Ron Conways, Parker said. “It’s fine if there’s a few guys doing this, but there’s so much capital now in the early stage.”

Parker contended that the Internet is becoming a mature business, where power consolidates among big players like Facebook, Google and Apple — making it harder for young companies to knock them off. “For young entrepreneurs, it’s really not helpful for some guy to come along and write you a check,” he said.

Despite the bad economy, turbulent markets and lackluster venture returns of late, limited partners looking for an investment edge seem to still be adding more dough to the VC kitty.

Three of Silicon Valley’s more prominent venture firms — Khosla Ventures, Redpoint Ventures and the Founders Fund — are nearing the closing of new funds that will total almost $2 billion.

This despite a bad economy, turbulent markets and lackluster venture returns of late. That said, limited partners looking for an investment edge apparently seem to still be adding more dough to the VC kitty.

Sources familiar with the fundings, in fact, said the raises have been much easier than previous ones.

Khosla has raised almost $2.4 billion since 2009, including $1.3 billion in 2010. Its fourth is now nearly completed, at just under that, which the firm had previously signaled in regulatory filings it planned to raise.

The third fund has been spent on cleantech companies, but also on early-stage high-profile Internet start-ups such as Square.

Redpoint will focus its fund — which sources said was $400 million — on growth opportunities.

Its last fund in 2010 was $400 million, too. It has invested that money in start-ups, such as Jumptap, Kabam and Pure Storage.

Lastly, the Founders Fund — with high-profile partners Peter Thiel and Sean Parker — is aiming at a $350 million fund with a $150 million “cushion” to raise more. Its last fund of $250 million was raised last year.

Founders Fund has recently made investments in Path, Azumio and Topsy.
