<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/03/seesmic1b.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-189346" title="seesmic1b" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/03/seesmic1b-380x258.png" alt="" width="380" height="258" /></a>The layoffs, which happened on Monday, came as part of a shift away from building enterprise social tools on the Salesforce platform to refocusing on the social posting tools Seesmic already owns.</p>
<p>When reached by phone today, CEO Loic Le Meur said the layoffs were only the latest size reduction Seesmic has seen, as it has reshaped itself many times. Since it launched in 2007, Seesmic has been a video platform, then made Twitter clients and other social tools, and last year tried to make a go with Salesforce CRM products.</p>
<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;ve been trying for a long time has not worked the way we hoped,&#8221; Le Meur said.</p>
<p>In February, the company <a href="http://blog.seesmic.com/ping.html#.T2uJWmK3DQY">announced</a> it would be changing and expanding the free Ping.fm social media cross-posting tools it bought in 2010 into a paid service called &#8220;Seesmic Ping.&#8221;</p>
<p>Seesmic <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/01/social-application-developer-seesmic-raises-4-million-from-softbank-and-salesforce-com/">raised</a> $4 million in fresh funding last year from investors including Salesforce and Softbank. Le Meur is well known as the host of the annual LeWeb conference in Paris.</p>

<p>Salesforce.com has bought Manymoon, the social productivity start-up.</p>
<p>The price of the acquisition was not disclosed, but one source put the sale at between $25 million and $35 million.</p>
<p>Manymoon makes one of the more <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100309/manymoon-and-50-others-join-new-google-apps-marketplace-heres-a-video-interview-with-the-founders">popular tools on Google&#8217;s apps platform</a>.</p>
<p>The San Francisco company, funded with only a small seed funding round by Harrison Metal, offers an online collaboration app that businesses and consumers can use to organize group projects, conversations, tasks or documents that are often done via email or other software.</p>
<p>Manymoon is rather typical of the innovative app makers the search giant has been courting to populate its marketplace.</p>
<p>Salesforce.com has been moving aggressively into social networking in the enterprise arena with its Chatter offering and more.</p>
<p>Earlier today, in fact, it was also part of a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110201/seesmic-raises-from-4-million-in-funding-salesforce/">$4 million funding of Seesmic</a>, the social dashboard app maker.</p>

<p>In an interesting social enterprise move, popular social networking collaboration tool Seesmic is taking a $4 million investment from Salesforce.com, as well as from Softbank.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based Seesmic has one of the top desktop and also mobile applications for monitoring a consumer&#8217;s various feeds from Twitter, Facebook and more.</p>
<p>So far, Seesmic has received $16 million in total funding. Other investors include Atomico, Omidyar Network and Wellington Partners.</p>
<p>Moving beyond a consumer app, where it has one million registered users, Seesmic has also worked closely with Salesforce.com on integrating its Chatter social enterprise network offering.</p>
<p>Deeper integration with Chatter and bridging more social communications with its customers is coming, said Seemsic founder and CEO Lo&iuml;c Le Meur.</p>
<p>&#8220;It becomes an amazing internal dashboard if you are a manager,&#8221; said Le Meur in an interview with BoomTown this morning. &#8220;It has everything we have built for consumers, but internally.&#8221;</p>
<p>There are many such apps and software-based services being developed to inject social into the enterprise, including Yammer, Socialcast and Jive.</p>
<p>It will also be interesting to see if the investment is a prelude to an acquisition by Salesforce.com, to further bolster its own efforts in socializing the workplace.</p>

<p>Still, Le Meur sought to downplay the conflict&#8211;even after Twitter bought the competing Tweetie desktop client&#8211;with a blogpost titled: <a href="http://www.loiclemeur.com/english/2010/04/fck-you-naysayers-twitter-did-not-fck-us-and-just-rocks.html">&#8220;F*CK you naysayers. Twitter did NOT f*ck us and just rocks.&#8221;</a></p>
<p><em>Alrighty then!</em></p>
<p>And while it is true that Seesmic is more than just a Twitter client&#8211;with Facebook, LinkedIn and more in its dashboard for the desktop and mobile devices&#8211;Le Meur has to hope that competition between the microblogging service and the social networking giant is a good thing for smaller start-ups in their ecosystem, such as Seesmic.</p>

Because <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100414/google-takes-a-small-stab-at-fixing-twitter-search/">search on Twitter is a lousy experience</a>.</p>
<p>So how can Twitter generate more search queries than Yahoo (YHOO) and one fifth of Google&#8217;s (GOOG) total each month, as the company announced during its Chirp conference today?</p>
<p>Because Twitter&#8217;s definition of &#8220;search&#8221; is different from a regular person&#8217;s.</p>
<p>You probably think of a search as something you do when you enter a term into a search box and hit return. But Twitter&#8217;s network allows power users on clients like TweetDeck and Seesmic to create a standing search field for a particular term, which then automatically updates itself. Each one of those updates counts as a new search.</p>
<p>And those kinds of searches&#8211;made by a minority of Twitter users, with the aid of machines&#8211;are what account for most of Twitter&#8217;s search volume, <a href="http://searchengineland.com/twitter-does-19-billion-searches-per-month-39988?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+searchengineland+%28Search+Engine+Land%29">Danny Sullivan</a> explains quite well today, following a conversation with Twitter CEO Ev Williams.</p>
<p>As Danny notes, it&#8217;s certainly an important technical accomplishment for Twitter to be able to respond to all those queries. But it also illustrates why Twitter needs to and will move its ad platform beyond search queries.</p>

<p>Twitter has <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100413/live-from-new-york-twitter-pitches-ads-to-madison-avene/">started showing ads to its users</a>. But Twitter is not the only one doing this&#8211;there&#8217;s a host of start-ups trying to insert ads into the Twitter stream, and more on the way.</p>
<p>So here&#8217;s a question: Will Twitter force publishers and app developers to use its ad platform exclusively?</p>
<p>No, says COO Dick Costolo.</p>
<p>In theory, he says, it would be possible for someone like TweetDeck or Seesmic to use Twitter&#8217;s &#8220;sponsored tweets&#8221; offering along with something like 140 Proof, which also places ads, in the form of tweets, into users&#8217; streams.</p>
<p>After all, conventional Web publishers can use Google&#8217;s (GOOG) AdSense products and competing ad networks. Why shouldn&#8217;t the same thing work for Twitter?</p>
<p>But Costolo also has a warning for anyone who does sell ads in the streams: Tread very, very carefully. Here&#8217;s an excerpt from an interview I conducted with him this afternoon.</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Clients can use our system and other ad systems at the same time. The distinction I would make, or the caveat I would add to that, [is that] we are going to probably prohibit pieces, insertions into the timeline that cause user confusion.</p>
<p>So for example, if someone creates an ad that looks like a tweet in the timeline, but isn&#8217;t a tweet&#8211;such that if you click on the retweet button, you go to a landing page, instead of retweeting the tweet&#8211;that&#8217;s something [that] causes user confusion, it harms the overall value of the platform, and we&#8217;re going to prohibit that.</p></blockquote>
<p>That &#8220;user confusion&#8221; theme is a favorite at Twitter. It&#8217;s the same argument <a href="http://blog.twitter.com/2010/04/twitter-for-iphone.html">CEO Ev Williams used</a> to explain the company&#8217;s thinking behind its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100409/twitter-goes-shopping-comes-home-with-tweetie-next/">purchase of Tweetie</a> last week.</p>
<p>Still, the Twitter ad platforms I&#8217;m familiar with&#8211;Ad.ly, 140 Proof, TweetUp, etc.&#8211;seem to comply with Costolo&#8217;s restrictions: All of them turn tweets into ads, but the tweet still functions as a tweet. The Twitter COO seems to have something or someone on his mind here, though.</p>
<p>And when he goes on to explain what he <em>doesn&#8217;t</em> have a problem with&#8211;ad platforms that don&#8217;t sell in the stream at all&#8211;he seems to be sending a message: If you don&#8217;t want to worry about platform conflict, the best way to do that is to avoid doing what we do.</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>There are pieces of the puzzle that we&#8217;re going to prohibit if we feel they harm the overall value of the platform. And that&#8217;s one example.</p>
<p>What I&#8217;m absolutely fine with&#8230;is a client that&#8217;s got a banner ad at the top, that&#8217;s segregated from the timeline. And that banner ad is sold by a third party, and those people decide not to participate in the promoted tweets platform. I don&#8217;t have a problem with that and we encourage that.</p></blockquote>
<p>So make of this what you will. You can see our entire conversation below. Costolo also makes a brief version of the pitch he&#8217;s going to deliver to developers tomorrow at Twitter&#8217;s Chirp conference, and he and I go back and forth about Twitter&#8217;s intention to show ads outside of search results.</p>

<p>Twitter has quietly been reaching out to marketers about its new ad platform for a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100226/twitters-ad-plan-copy-google/">few months</a>, but now it&#8217;s a full-fledged marketing blitz. The messaging service <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100412/as-promised-here-come-the-twitter-ads/">rolled out its ad strategy to the press</a> last night; today it&#8217;s going directly to the ad industry, via COO <a href="http://twitter.com/dickc">Dick Costolo&#8217;s</a> presentation at <a href="http://adage.com/digital2010/agenda.php">Ad Age&#8217;s Digital Conference</a>.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m not sure how much more Costolo will reveal that Twitter hasn&#8217;t put out already&#8211;or may be waiting to talk about at tomorrow&#8217;s Chirp conference. But since I&#8217;m here I&#8217;ll liveblog it anyway.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p>Costolo says he has been waiting five or six months to give this presentation. It&#8217;s time to walk through the rollout, he adds, making note of his &#8220;fascinating nontraditional&#8221; prediction last fall.</p>
<p>He explains the Twitter ecosystem. The ad platform has to go everywhere, not just to Twitter.com. He refuses to call the ads, &#8220;ads.&#8221; They&#8217;re &#8220;just tweets.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Promoted tweets,&#8221; that is.</p>
<p>He walks through the @hashtagtees example.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a menu from which ad buyers can pick search terms and associate them with specific tweets they&#8217;ve already published.</p>
<p>Promoted tweets look and act like regular tweets except that they&#8217;re labeled as promotions and stay at the top of the Twitterstream.</p>
<p>A promoted tweet &#8220;combines earned media and paid media in one space,&#8221; Costolo says.</p>
<p>&#8220;Earned&#8221; media are free, Costolo reminds the audience. That is, if people retweet your paid tweet, there&#8217;s no charge additional charge.</p>
<p>The pitch continues: Ads are &#8220;real time,&#8221; and so are analytics&#8211;you can see how ads are performing second-by-second.</p>
<p>Twitter will start with Twitter.com search. That&#8217;s phase one. The plan will roll out more broadly, but the company is doing it this way because it wants a &#8220;thoughtful, user-centric approach&#8221; to figuring it out. &#8220;We will quickly expand into syndication&#8230;all of our syndication partners.&#8221; And here, Costolo specifically mentions UberTwitter in the list of partners.</p>
<p><strong>Important</strong>: Twitter will definitely expand into the regular timeline at some point. That is, you will be getting ads in your stream whether you search or not. Ad-free Twitter is over.</p>
<p>Costolo talks about the &#8220;resonance&#8221; metric Twitter will use to figure out which promoted tweets show up and where.</p>
<p>Each ad partner will see a scoreboard with different metrics: Retweets, @replies, #tag click, avatar clicks, link clicks, views after RT.</p>
<p>Advertisers won&#8217;t pay for ads that don&#8217;t resonate with users.</p>
<p>Next, Costolo describes communication on Twitter as both &#8220;one to many&#8221; and as a &#8220;real-time interest graph.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pricing will start as CPM. Twitter is doing this because it doesn&#8217;t know how to correlate &#8220;resonance&#8221; with value yet. As the company figures this out, it will move to a pricing model based on ROI.</p>
<p>Here comes Porter Gale, VP of marketing for Virgin America, a launch partner. She notes that @jack is flying VA right now.</p>

<p>Um, here&#8217;s a free ad for two-for-one tickets on Virgin. Don&#8217;t really follow it but sure you can figure it out if you&#8217;d like.</p>

<p>Stone describes some sort of live, real-time convergence between shows broadcast and users&#8217; tweets. Makes my head hurt. Hope it doesn&#8217;t pop up during &#8220;Top Chef.&#8221;</p>
<p>Back to Costolo: More monetization coming. Commercial accounts coming after promoted tweets will &#8220;feather into this platform very very nicely.&#8221; One dashboard will manage both products.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Q&amp;A</h4>
<p><strong>Will tweets be syndicated to Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO), and other partners that take the stream?</strong><br />
Costolo says yes, without mentioning any specific search engine or media pub.</p>
<p><strong>Will there be revenue-sharing with publishers and bloggers?</strong><br />
Yes, with developers and publishers. Costolo says Twitter will talk about this at its Chirp conference and focus on the syndication piece there. Revenue sharing will be &#8220;very transparent,&#8221; he adds.</p>
<p><strong>Early reaction from consumers?</strong><br />
Yes, Twitter is getting a &#8220;wait and see,&#8221; Costolo notes. [From whom? Who's seen it?] The company will take its &#8220;learnings&#8221; from search and go forward. Twitter ads should be live and running now.</p>
<p><strong>What CPM are you charging?</strong><br />
Twitter is playing around with different numbers, trying to figure it out. When a term is owned or created by a client, like Virgin America, should it have &#8220;rights&#8221; to that hashtag, whereby no one can outbid it? Some hashtags only have value at certain times. Like &#8220;Super Bowl,&#8221; which is only useful for a couple hours in the year. So we have to play around and test different kinds of pricing. &#8220;We don&#8217;t know the answer to that yet.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>What kind of reactions are you looking for from users?</strong><br />
Costolo says Twitter is looking to see whether people click or interact with ads and paying attention to the tenor of reaction: Positive or negative, etc. Think about the iPad launch this month. People were having battery issues. Someone could have jumped in in real time and bought a promoted tweet that dealt with that. Twitter&#8217;s hope is that when people see these, they&#8217;ll get why they work.</p>
<p><strong>Please talk about search volume.</strong><br />
&#8220;Massive. It&#8217;s huge.&#8221; Will talk about hashtags tomorrow. But on Twitter.com, it&#8217;s a small piece of traffic. So we&#8217;re not maximizing revenue now. We&#8217;re figuring it out.</p>
<p><strong>How will location work with ads?</strong><br />
&#8220;We think significantly.&#8221; There are lots of opportunities down the road. As this gets more sophisticated, will see opps for small and big business.</p>

<p>Just as Twitter finally prepares to announce its plans to make money&#8211;after what has seemed an eternity&#8211;the man responsible for the invention of paid search is beating the microblogging site to the potentially profitable punch, and without its involvement.</p>
<p>Armed with $3.5 million in venture funding from a group of leading investors, well-known entrepreneur Bill Gross is launching a public beta of TweetUp, a keyword-based bidding marketplace akin to Overture/Goto.com, the first paid search system he created a decade ago.</p>
<p>Gross will be the CEO of TweetUp, which will also offer an organic search service to surface the best tweets, a move that seems to put it in competition with Twitter&#8217;s own search service.</p>
<p>This comes just as Twitter is aggressively moving to take over key parts of its ecosystem, which has largely been left to third-party developers.</p>
<p>TweetUp could now give these developers a chance to make money on Twitter without relying on Twitter.</p>
<p>TweetUp is backed by Index Ventures, betaworks, Revolution LLC, First Round Capital and other investors, including Mahalo&#8217;s Jason Calacanis and BuzzMachine&#8217;s Jeff Jarvis.</p>
<p>And TweetUp has struck a number of distribution deals with well-known Twitter search clients and Web sites&#8211;such as Seesmic, Answers.com and others&#8211;and will pay them half its revenue.</p>
<p>Gross has been working on the service since February at his Idealab start-up incubator in Pasadena, Calif.</p>
<p>He said he got the idea after he was struck by how hard it was to sort through good tweets from the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100210/boomtown-heads-to-ted-and-promises-no-pretentious-tweets">TED conference</a>, as well as how quickly a substantive tweet he posted, which was related to the global climate change event, disappeared as more recent  ones replaced it in real time.</p>
<p>Said TweetUp in a press release about its system:</p>
<p>&#8220;In addition to an algorithm that combines a variety of factors to determine relevance, tweeters can bid on keywords in a competitive marketplace very similar to what now occurs at Internet search engines. This sophisticated combination of factors pushes the best tweets to the top of the results of users&#8217; searches, allowing them to find the most compelling tweeters, and it enables serious tweeters to expand their following quickly and cost-effectively. TweetUp search will work alongside Twitter&#8217;s traditional search to provide a richer array of results.&#8221;</p>
<p>Twitter is also making several moves to monetize itself of late, with most observers expecting an advertising system to be announced soon.</p>
<p>The company has also been adding tools, which puts it in direct conflict with outside developers. On Friday, for example, Twitter announced it was <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100409/twitter-goes-shopping-comes-home-with-tweetie-next/">purchasing Tweetie</a>, maker of a popular Apple (AAPL) iPhone client for the messaging service.</p>
<p>The start-up has traditionally relied on third-party developers to build apps for the service, much as Facebook did at its start.</p>
<p>But Twitter management and key investors have recently been signaling that the company would be taking over key aspects of its business. This has caused tensions, obviously, in the wider Twitter ecosystem.</p>
<p>Thus, it will be interesting to watch how Twitter reacts to what Gross is doing with TweetUp.</p>

<p class="question"><em>Why should I care about Brizzly?</em></p>
<p>It depends on what you&#8217;re looking for. If one of the things that interests you is how a large community is experiencing life&#8211;I mean really interested in the community and not just the idea of your friends&#8211;then Brizzly does that a little more easily than other things. [Brizzly's assets are] no small difference for those who are interested in it.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Why are all Twitter-related logos, including yours, so darn cute?</em></p>

<p>Yeah, we&#8217;re a little cheeky, right? I think it&#8217;s probably just because of a pendulum swing. I mean, the last thing [Thing Labs' CEO Jason Shellen] and I worked on was the exact opposite. Google Reader is not cuddly. It&#8217;s friendly, but cuddly it isn&#8217;t. The other thing is, we were hoping to try what strong branding is like&#8211;in terms of anthropomorphic animals. The bear design [was drawn by] both Jason and [Twitter Co-founder] Biz Stone.</p>
<p class="question"><em>What can we expect from Thing Labs and Brizzly three months out?</em></p>
<p>We will have at least three richer sets of experiences, some of which include entirely different products all connected through our letsbetrends.com API.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Every geek has a memory where they saw something new and had to say to themselves, &#8220;Dang, I love living in the future.&#8221; What&#8217;s yours?</em></p>
<p>One big one for me was at Google&#8211;it was my first day and someone says, &#8220;Hey, have they taken you to see the robots yet?&#8221; I was like, &#8220;Hahaha&#8230; <em>No</em>.&#8221; They took me to this building where there was a room filled with these Rube Goldbergesque mechanical devices. Large cages with metal bars and wires, culminating in this ball in the center. This girl climbed into the thing. She put her feet in these stirrups and sat in this weird chair, and then this book slides out. The girl started tapping her feet on this base drum pedal and doing this thing with her hands, and then the book slides away [they were scanning the books]. I was like, &#8220;What is this?&#8221; and they said, &#8220;Well, this is Ocean [the internal name for Google Books].&#8221; What struck me was the scale. It was clear to me that they were going to scan ridiculous amounts of information very, very quickly, and I realized: Whoa, THIS is very different.&#8221;</p>
<p class="question"><em>Are you really competitive with rivals?</em></p>
<p>I just don&#8217;t have that kind of fight in me. I mean, I want to kick my own ass. I know there are lots of guys out there who can totally drop the names of someone they want to just crush. I just don&#8217;t have it. I get more frustrated with me, more than anyone else. I&#8217;m like Jim Carrey in &#8220;Liar Liar&#8221;:  &#8220;I&#8217;m kicking <em>my</em> ass.&#8221;</p>

<p>Geekfighting may never become its own UFC event, but following tech news this week seemed, in places, like a view to a big, well-funded cage match. Things got so rowdy that Kara Swisher could hear them all the way across &#8220;The Pond.&#8221;</p>
<p>Before heading off on her tour of Euro-BoomTown this week, Kara set off for Carlsbad, Calif. to visit with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090915/warren-buffett-at-fortune-womens-conference-on-the-economy-and-george-clooney/">Warren Buffet and the ladies of Fortune</a>. Après Buffet, readers were treated to an exclusive interview, Kara-style, with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090918/loic-le-meur-speaks-about-new-and-improved-seesmic/">Loïc Le Meur, Seesmic founder</a> and namesake of the Web’s cutest logo. Kara wasn’t just visiting Europe for some cute overload, though. She wired back a report on the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090918/kara-visits-the-oxford-social-media-convention-i-say-twitt-er-you-say-twitt-ah/">Oxford Social Media Convention</a>, where she spoke on social media’s effect on business. Kara rounded out her week with rowdiness and the<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090918/parsing-the-legal-tantrums-of-zennstrom-and-friis/"> legal tantrums of Skype founders Zennström and Friis</a>.</p>
<p>Closer to home, Digital Daily covered the media battle between Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG), which recalls a shoving match between the prom king and the captain of the football team. Apple continued to insist that it was <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090918/aapl-goog/">still “studying”</a> the proposed Google Voice app for iPhone, while Google insisted that it had <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090918/quoted-118/">already been rejected</a>. It’s tough being the popular kids.</p>
<p>Between the smartphone scuffles, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090918/palm-2/">Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein was urging everyone to play nice</a>, even as Palm still may have to fight for survival.</p>
<p>The Silicon Valley malevolence even spread to Gotham early in the week. MediaMemo got the backstory on how the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090914/the-new-york-times-explains-how-it-got-hacked-it-sold-an-ad/">New York Times was hacked</a> into spreading malware to its Web visitors. The explanation: It sold an ad to hackers, who posed as mild-mannered VOIP client Vonage (VG) to make the purchase. Meanwhile in a related&#8211;or not&#8211;story, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090918/microsoft-goes-hunting-for-malvertisements/">Microsoft is seeking and suing some mystery malvertisers</a> who perpetrated a similar scheme with ads sold by the software giant. Whether it is a growing trend or a few overachieving hackers, it was a tough week in ad land.</p>
<p>Amid all the kneecapping and eye-gouging, all things Mossberg was a helpful calm in the storm. Walt liked the <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090916/apples-itunes-9-makes-it-easier-to-share-organize/">new features in iTunes 9</a> and found it uncluttered, easier to use and more intelligent than its predecessor. Also among the hits were upgraded management and improved content-sharing.</p>
<p>Mossberg’s Mailbox was stuffed <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com/20090916/mossbergs-mailbox-11/">full of sage advice</a> about online backup as the kids go of to college, compression and the vinyl vs. digital dilemma, and some on-target advice for the family genealogist making the switch from PC to Mac.</p>
<p>The Mossberg Solution delved deeper into email mastery with some <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090915/how-to-tweak-outlook-email-to-work-for-you/">unmissable tips and tricks for Microsoft Outlook users</a>. Katie made an industry standard better, and even gave readers a peek into some coming attractions for Outlook 2010.</p>

<p>When BoomTown<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080227/kara-visits-seesmic-and-chats-with-loic-le-meur/"> went to visit serial entrepreneur Loïc Le Meur early last year</a> at his San Francisco HQ, he was stoked about the prospects of his &#8220;video conversation&#8221; community start-up called Seesmic.</p>
<p>That was especially due to the influx of $6 million into his bank account by high-profile angel investors like LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, former AOL head Steve Case, SoftTech VC Jeff Clavier, Zynga&#8217;s Mark Pincus, investor Ron Conway, FON founder Martin Varsavsky and others.</p>
<p>Fast-forward to today and the entire business plan of Seesmic has been upended, with the video part pretty much junked.</p>
<p>Now, Le Meur is focused almost entirely on his social media desktop client, as well as Web and mobile versions, which began as a dashboard for Twitter called twhirl.</p>
<p>If at first you don&#8217;t succeed, dump and change again&#8211;the motto of Silicon Valley!</p>
<p>Seesmic has added a lot more Web services to the client to make it stickier, such as announcing yesterday that it would <a href="http://blog.seesmic.com/2009/09/seesmic-desktop-version-06-updates.html">allow users to access and manage Facebook Pages</a>.</p>
<p>The idea behind Seesmic, as well as competitors such as TweetDeck, is to allow users to manage their various social media tools much like their email accounts.</p>
<p>And while the service&#8217;s desktop client software has been a focus, Le Meur is also pushing its Web and mobile versions, all in the hopes that the newest innovation is the right one.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a tour I did of Seesmic&#8217;s new HQ and a video interview I did with Le Meur about all the changes:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people who aren&#8217;t familiar with Twitter are eager to list the reasons why they don&#8217;t use this social-networking service. It&#8217;s for narcissists. It&#8217;s for teenagers. It&#8217;s for people who have nothing better to do. It&#8217;s a forum for oversharing. While all of these things may be true in some cases, I find Twitter&#8217;s 140-character messaging network to be an incredibly useful tool in my everyday life.</p>
<p>I use Twitter as my personalized news feed by following people who &#8220;tweet&#8221; (write updates) about things that interest me. In one glance I can read White House correspondent Mark Knoller&#8217;s tweets about President Obama&#8217;s activities, a recipe tweeted by Martha Stewart and WSJ.com tweets with links to news stories. </p>

<p>But Twitter works best with a little help from its friends, namely those programs that are designed to make it more customized and useful with minimal work on the user&#8217;s behalf. Here&#8217;s a rundown of just some of these helpers. I&#8217;m focusing only on ones that run on your computer, either in Web browsers or as stand-alone programs. There is also a plethora of Twitter applications that work on mobile devices like the iPhone and BlackBerry, too many to go into here. A few Twitter programs let you lurk and read tweets without a Twitter account, but in most cases these programs require a Twitter user name and password so they can better organize tweets of the people whom you follow.</p>

<p>To get a Twitter account in the first place, you will need to sign up with a user name and password at <a href="http://Twitter.com">Twitter.com</a> and start following people—or subscribing to read someone&#8217;s updates. These may be friends or people you simply find interesting, like journalists whose work you read (my Twitter user name is kabster728). You can see whom one person follows, and then opt also to follow those same people and the people those people follow and so on. Though it&#8217;s possible to lock your account so it&#8217;s private, very few people do so because Twitter encourages open communication throughout the Web.</p>
<p>That said, you can always choose to block someone from following you or stop following someone&#8217;s Twitter feed. You can comment on a tweet by sending the person who wrote it an &#8220;at reply,&#8221; named because the reply starts with the &#8220;@&#8221; sign followed by the user name of the person to whom you are replying. You can also send direct messages to another Twitter user as long as he or she is following you.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">All-Purpose Programs</h5>
<p>TweetDeck and Seesmic are two programs that do a good job of filtering others&#8217; tweets and aiding the process of writing tweets. Both use Adobe Air, a tool that lets the program work in the background while continuously refreshing its content. This increases productivity because the programs can be set to display pop-up notifications whenever certain tweets appear. </p>
<p>TweetDeck (a free download at <a href="http://TweetDeck.com">TweetDeck.com</a>) organizes tweets into columns that you designate, such as a column of all tweets that mention your name, your company&#8217;s name or the word &#8220;Wimbledon.&#8221; It eases the process of writing tweets by building in ways to shorten Web links, post photos or translate a tweet into one of 35 languages. TweetDeck also integrates with Facebook so that one TweetDeck column displays your Facebook friends&#8217; latest status updates.</p>
<p>The most recent version of TweetDeck enables synchronization of accounts with an email and password. This means that you can download TweetDeck on several computers, log into your account and see the same columns and settings on all platforms. The new version also includes fun extras like search within each column and the option to show how many followers a user has by displaying that number below his or her tweets.</p>
<p>Seesmic (a free download at <a href="http://seesmic.com">seesmic.com</a>) is another all-purpose Twitter program. It works much like TweetDeck, but has a few differences. Seesmic also integrates with Facebook, but does so in a more robust way, showing when Facebook friends share photos or Web links and letting you comment on or &#8220;like&#8221; someone&#8217;s status; TweetDeck only shows Facebook status updates.</p>
<p>Seesmic lets you drag photos into a small window for sharing via Twitter. But its overall look isn&#8217;t as visually appealing as TweetDeck&#8217;s and it lacks some of TweetDeck&#8217;s extra features.</p>
<p>Twhirl (<a href="http://twhirl.org">twhirl.org</a>) also runs on Adobe Air, working in the background as you use your computer for other activities. Like the aforementioned programs, it also enables easier tweeting with built-in tools for photo uploading and URL shrinking. Unlike TweetDeck and Seesmic, which focus on Twitter and Facebook, Twhirl enables logging into four types of accounts: Twitter, FriendFeed, Laconi.ca and Identica. But Twhirl shows only one category at a time, like a screen of replies, rather than showing all of these categories at a glance like TweetDeck and Seesmic.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Browser Power</h5>
<p>Some Twitter programs run in browsers, not as stand-alone programs. This saves you from downloading a program on multiple computers because you can simply log into your account on any computer using its Web browser. But these programs won&#8217;t use the helpful pop-up notifications of Adobe Air; instead, you will need to look in your browser to see new information—like opening Twitter.com.</p>
<p>One such browser-based program is HootSuite (<a href="http://HootSuite.com">HootSuite.com</a>), which uses an owl as its mascot. HootSuite&#8217;s unique features include its ability to set tweets to send at a later time or date, giving your followers the illusion that you are tweeting when you&#8217;re actually not, and a built-in statistic-tracker to measure how many people opened a link you posted using its ow.ly URL shortener. Like Twhirl, HootSuite shows only certain categories at a time rather than one overall glance at many categories of tweets.</p>
<p>Twitter.com is getting better, though it&#8217;s still weak compared with these other programs. I&#8217;ve used add-ons in my Firefox browser to enhance Twitter, and one called Power Twitter is like steroids for Twitter.com, adding photo uploading and link shortening right into the Web site. It also makes friends&#8217; tweets richer by displaying details about any Web links that they share. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">No Sign-Up Necessary</h5>
<p>If you&#8217;re just curious about Twitter and want to see what people are talking about without signing up, try sites that are open to everyone. <a href="http://Twitterfall.com">Twitterfall.com</a>, for example, displays tweets about trending Twitter topics and custom search results in a waterfall-like visual with new tweets spilling over the top every half second. <a href="http://TwitterVision.com">TwitterVision.com</a> cleverly displays tweets around the world on a global map as they are posted, showing where the tweets are from, geographically. </p>
<p>Twitter isn&#8217;t limited to Twitter.com, and I wouldn&#8217;t likely use it as much were it not for programs like the ones I&#8217;ve mentioned and others. So give them a try and find out what makes Twitter useful for you. </p>

<p>U.S. speakers include TED&#8217;s Chris Anderson, News Corp. (NWS) social-networking site MySpace&#8217;s Amit Kapur, Marissa Mayer of Google (GOOG), Linda Avey of 23andMe, LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, and Dan&#8217;l Lewin of Microsoft (MSFT).</p>

<p>Of course, there&#8217;s a passel of bloggers here like BoomTown. I&#8217;ll be interviewing Werner Vogels, CTO of Amazon (AMZN) and well-known Israeli entrepreneur Yossi Vardi.</p>
<p>Besides this conference, Loïc Le Meur has been trying to make a go of it with his San Francisco-based start-up Seesmic, which&#8211;like a lot of Web 2.0 companies&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081027/a-pictures-worth-a-thousand-words-so-what-does-a-big-smile-in-a-layoff-story-mean/">has recently made cutbacks</a>. See my video interview below with him in better times, when I visited Seesmic in February.</p>

<p>BoomTown always enjoys chatting with the always sunny <a href="http://www.loiclemeur.com">Loïc Le Meur</a> of Seesmic (and will, in fact, be appearing at his Paris-based digital conference in December, called <a href="http://www.lewebparis.com/">Le Web</a>).</p>

<p>But I am not quite sure what to make of his big, happy smile that was in this picture above (click in the image to make it larger), which went with a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/27/technology/companies/27dotbomb.html">story in the New York Times about start-ups cutting costs</a>.</p>
<p>In fact, the whole <a href="http://www.seesmic.com">Seesmic</a> crew is grinning awfully hard, putting a very game face on recent layoffs that cut the staff at the video blog service by more than a third.</p>
<p>Money&#8211;or, more accurately, <em>non-money</em>&#8211;quote from the Times piece:</p>
<p>&#8220;To preserve cash, many tech start-ups are rushing to lay off employees and cut expenses. They are shelving their dreams of Google-size riches and getting small, humble and thrifty, all with the more modest goal of surviving the coming economic winter.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a less puritan mode, Seesmic raised $6 million in May from a bunch of high-profile angels, of $12 million total.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/10/seesmiclogo.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/10/seesmiclogo.jpg" alt="" title="seesmiclogo" width="200" height="83" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-5676" /></a></p>
<p>They include LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, former AOL head Steve Case, SoftTech VC Jeff Clavier, entrepreneur Mark Pincus, former Goldman Sachs analyst Michael Parekh, entrepreneur Ariel Poler, investor Ron Conway, FON founder Martin Varsavsky and an investment group called Atomico founded by Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Tech bloggers Jeff Pulver, Michael Arrington and Dan Gillmor have also invested.</p>
<p>Now, Le Meur is trying to stretch his dollars in the economic downturn, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081009/irony-alert-bubble-making-venture-capitalists-start-popping-them/">spurred by venture capitalists who have been pressing entrepreneurs like him to do so</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;If I can&#8217;t make this work in three years it will be a failure,&#8221; Mr. Le Meur said to the Times. &#8220;If I can and I get through this, it will be much stronger.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, what doesn&#8217;t kill us &#8230;</p>
<p><em>C&#8217;est la vie in Silicon Valley!</em></p>

<p>After all, it was Conway (pictured here), as well as Sequoia Capital, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081009/irony-alert-bubble-making-venture-capitalists-start-popping-them/">sent out a stink bomb of an email last week to his start-ups</a> to deliver a simple message: The Web 2.0 party is over.</p>
<p>Said Conway to his entrepreneurial troops as the market was crashing down and smacking tech companies hard in the process:</p>
<p>&#8220;Unfortunately history DOES repeat itself but I hope we can learn from history and prevent the turmoil from occurring again. The message is simple. Raising capital will be much more difficult now &#8230; the name of the game in this environment in some respects is survival&#8211;survival until conditions change.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Survival!?!</em> What ho? This from the man who is one of the more upbeat of Web investors! Who is one of the backers of Digg, Facebook, Twitter, Ning, Seesmic and 125 other Web 2.0 companies?</p>
<p>Ironically, our lunch yesterday was little more than a year after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070611/ron-conway-speaks-about-porches-and-porsches/">I had had another lunch with Conway</a>, where I also made a video, and during which we had a lively discussion about a range of topics, including the venture business (better than ever!), innovation (better than better than ever!), monetizing video content on the Web (best of all!) and more.</p>
<p>Yesterday, the news was not so happy, of course, although Conway did try to explain in more detail exactly what he meant in his most recent email, which echoed one he had also sent out when the last Internet bubble was popping a half-dozen years ago.</p>
<p>And that is: You better have a year&#8217;s worth of cash and a revenue model or you&#8217;re toast.</p>
<p>Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, he&#8217;s bullish!</p>

<p>Last night, BoomTown was invited to moderate a panel for MIT/Stanford Venture Lab at Stanford University&#8217;s Business School on the topic of lifecasting.</p>
<p>In other words, the digital version of TMI (too much information!).</p>
<p>Called <a href="http://www.vlab.org/article.html?aid=221">&#8220;Lifestreaming: The Real-time Web,&#8221;</a> it was aimed at debating the trend toward &#8220;sharing our lives with others as they happen,&#8221; with three entrepreneurs and a venture capitalist in the space.</p>
<p>The panel included Bret Taylor, Co-Founder of FriendFeed; Seesmic Founder Loic Le Meur; Pownce Co-Founder Leah Culver; and SoftTechVC&#8217;s Jeff Clavier.</p>
<p>It was a lively discussion, which was also focused on monetization&#8211;or lack thereof&#8211;issues in the instant Internet space, in which users share every detail of their lives with friends and family in a digital millisecond.</p>
<p>Like I said, MTMI (much too much information!!).</p>
<p>In any case, here&#8217;s a video I did of the event, including snippets of the company presentations, as well as interviews with all the panelists:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, WordPress Founder Matt Mullenweg and I jumped into the BoomTownMini and took a road trip down the lovely 280 to Palo Alto&#8217;s MacArthur Park restaurant for a lunch thrown by Germany&#8217;s Hubert Burda Media.</p>
<p>Burda runs an annual digital conference in Munich called <a href="http://www.dld-conference.com/">DLD</a> (Digital, Life, Design), which a lot of U.S. tech types have gone to, including me, even though the media giant is best known for its old-line magazines about fashion, cooking and crafts.</p>
<p>But Burda has also been dipping into the digital sector a lot, especially via the tireless tech networking of the company&#8217;s Steffi Czerny and Marcel Reichart, who have established a high profile for the company among Silicon Valley denizens.</p>
<p>That was in evidence at Burda&#8217;s luncheon yesterday, which was crowded with a panoply of techies and hosted by Czerny, Maria Burda, the wife of CEO and owner Hubert Burda, and well-known Israeli investor Yossi Vardi.</p>

<p>Czerny has been taking Maria Burda (pictured here, she is also a famous German television star, better known as Maria Furtwängler) around the Valley on a learning tour this week to meet with companies like Ning, Mozilla, Facebook, and with venture capitalists. They are also here to attend Google&#8217;s Zeitgeist partners&#8217; event, which starts today.</p>

<p>When <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20071228/seesmic-hear-me-touch-me-feel-me/">BoomTown last checked in</a> with French serial entrepreneur and blogger <a href="http://loiclemeur.com/">Loïc Le Meur</a>, he was setting up his Seesmic start-up in San Francisco&#8217;s Potrero Hill and making funny daily videos of the effort.</p>
<p>Now, Le Meur&#8217;s online video conversation community is ensconced in its new offices and his bank account is $6 million richer.</p>
<p>That wad of cash came earlier this month from high-profile angels like LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, former AOL head Steve Case, SoftTech VC Jeff Clavier, entrepreneur Mark Pincus, Goldman Sachs&#8217;s Michael Parekh, entrepreneur Ariel Poler, investor Ron Conway, FON founder Martin Varsavsky and an investment group called Atomico founded by Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis.</p>
<p>(In addition, tech bloggers Jeff Pulver, Michael Arrington and Dan Gillmor have also invested.)</p>
<p>Seesmic, which is still operating in alpha mode (there are a few glitches here and there on the service, especially related to searching), is described in a lot of ways&#8211;video Twitter, video social network, video sharing tool are some examples.</p>

<p>While the service has some critics, I like the idea of it a lot, as it takes the ideas pioneered by YouTube another step.</p>
<p>Still, many efforts in this kind of online commenting community sometimes degenerate into self-obsession and niches of niches. And given it is video, there is, of course, a huge potential for Seesmic to be used for porn.</p>
<p>BoomTown talked about this and more with Le Meur at Seesmic&#8217;s offices in the video below.</p>
<p>We also tested out the service by making a Le Meur video about our visit, where we tried to get the community to figure out our identity from only our hand and voice. It got more than a dozen responses very quickly and it was kind of fun, given that the guesses included Queen Elizabeth and actress Christina Ricci.</p>

<p>OK, you might attribute it to being super-bored in the holiday doldrums. But, for some reason I cannot explain, I find myself strangely drawn to the videos being made about the start-up of Seesmic, the new video-sharing service that is being created by European entrepreneur <a href="http://loiclemeur.com/">Loïc Le Meur</a>.</p>
<p>Up on his own <a href="http://www.loic.tv/">loic.tv</a> channel on YouTube, everything from checking out the company digs to working on a logo to hiring are on display, and Le Meur encourages community comments about the company&#8217;s direction. The videos are currently up to Day 57.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a shameless gimmick, to be sure, but Le Meur&#8217;s French accent grows on you, and it is an interesting way to market your company, for certain (<strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> and <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> only did one <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070906/d-allthingsdcom-the-reality-show/">staff BBQ and Rodeo video</a>, which is seen below).</p>
<p>While Seesmic is described in a lot of ways&#8211;video Twitter, video social network, video sharing tool are some examples&#8211;Seesmic&#8217;s obviously practicing what it preaches here: video blabbing that is often compelling.</p>

<p>To get it all going, Le Meur (who also organizes the <a href="http://www.leweb3.com/">Le Web</a> conference in Paris, which just took place) got a bunch of high-profile angels like former AOL head Steve Case, investor Ron Conway, FON founder Martin Varsavsky and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, as well as many others, to pony up millions for Seesmic&#8217;s funding.</p>
<p>He and his family moved to San Francisco this past summer, and he has been ferreting away ever since on the service, which will officially debut in early spring of 2008.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Seesmic&#8217;s latest, a what-are-you-doing-for-the-holidays video of its employees:</p>

<p>Then again, I also kind of like the flip side&#8211;the mostly hysterical, sometimes line-crossing attack review of Seesmic by <a href="http://www.1938media.com/seesmic-review/">Loren Feldman of 1938 Media</a>. Actually, although Feldman trashes Le Meur&#8217;s effort, it is just the kind of thing that would probably make Seesmic the very lively place it needs to be.</p>
