While the final episode of ABC’s “Lost” got all the attention last night, many were dissatisfied with the ending, which seemed to suggest the castaways were all dead the whole time.

Which does make sense for the convoluted television series, since it started with a plane crash.

But here are videos of BoomTown’s favorite TV finales, including my personal fave from HBO’s “Six Feet Under.”

(The image above is the last one from “M.A.S.H.,” by the way, which was one of the most watched, but way too weepy for me.)

Seinfeld (it was about nothing!):

Sadly, due to the sniffles and some minor hacking (thanks, kids!), BoomTown had to miss the roast of well-known blogger Robert Scoble that Startup2Startup hosted at its holiday party last night on Pier 38 in San Francisco.

I was skedded to be one of the roasters, though, so I sent along a video of all my video encounters over the years at various tech events with the man I like to call Scooby-Don’t.

As you will see below from our geek version of Seinfeld-Newman faceoffs, I like to poke fun at the gooney enthusiasm of Scoobs–who never met a wacky gadget he did not squeal over, a social whatever start-up he did not proselytize or a line for a new iPhone he did not sit in all day and night.

In all seriousness, the blogosphere could use a lot more of Robert, who is big-hearted and infectiously warm, loyal and funny, in his own goofy way, and never cruel. Plus, he knows how to make fun of himself.

But most of all, Robert truly cares about innovation in tech, even if he also likes to tweet every time he has an errant thought about just about anything.

You can watch videos of the event here–the proceeds of which went to charity–or search #scobleroast on Twitter for more.

Here are my video interviews of Scoobs:

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=6781AC89-AEB6-4486-BF9C-8CF7E706D7A2&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

And here is Web Strategy’s Jeremiah Owyang’s slide presentation roast too:

Katherine Boehret looks at Clicker.com, which helps viewers find their favorite shows online faster.

Finding TV shows online can be a major hassle. If you can remember which network hosts the show, you then must hunt through a maze of listings of several other television shows on that network’s Web site to find it. The show you want to watch might not even be available since many networks rotate only a handful of recent episodes online at a time. And if you do finally find the correct episode, you may be required to download a special media player to watch it.

Some services make this process a little easier. Hulu holds episodes from 1,200 television shows, but is still missing many. Apple’s (AAPL) iTunes Store offers over 50,000 episodes, but unlike network sites or Hulu, it requires viewers to pay to download and watch them (though they are commercial-free). Video search engines like Truveo browse the entire Web, returning an often-overwhelming number of results. And while YouTube is the king of Web video, it can too easily return a search result that isn’t a complete and genuine episode of the show you’re seeking.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=D1797892-419A-49CB-99D5-7745FD8E2386&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

This week, I’ve been testing Clicker, a free Web site that aims to be the TV Guide for all full episodes available to watch on the Web. It searches over 1,200 sources, so it can index some 400,000 episodes from 7,000 shows. Results include television programs as well as “Web originals,” or shows that are native to the Internet and are of broadcast quality. Clicker either plays the video on its site or links you to where this content is shown on another hosting site—like NBC or Hulu. If a show isn’t available online, Clicker tells you so you don’t have to keep hunting all over for it.

I like Clicker and found it to be a quick resource for finding all sorts of shows online. In many cases, it directed me to find the episodes I wanted to watch and saved me the hassle of less efficient searching. It also suggested shows I might like and offered a playlist where I could subscribe to receive episodes as they became available or save available videos to watch later.

Clicker makes descriptive pages about each show

Though it has a search box, Clicker feels more like a directory than purely a robotic search engine that relies mainly on algorithms. In fact, Clicker created a descriptive page for almost every show, and these pages can be edited or created via user submissions, which Clicker will review before posting them to the site. And because it’s focused on TV shows or Web originals, it won’t clutter your results with kids’ birthday parties or cats on skateboards.

The site is still rather new, so it has some kinks to work out—like links to videos that didn’t actually play if, for example, they were pulled by the network. But these were rare, and for the most part, if a video wasn’t available, a clear, brief explanation was displayed at the top of the page. Also, if Clicker sends you back out to a network’s site and that network uses a special player for videos, you’ll still have to download that player.

Filtering Results

Clicker’s program pages contain a description of the show, and a way to filter results by season, airdate or popularity. And the site shows the actual airdate of each video—something that not many other sites do. A column on the right side of each page displays several related shows, like the suggestion of “Modern Family” for fans of “How I Met Your Mother”; and “Roswell” and “Dead Like Me” suggested for people who like “Heroes.” In December, these recommendations will become even more personalized.

Some of Clicker’s sources include NBC, Fox, ABC, PBS, the Food Network and Web original content (i.e. “The Onion”). It also can search movies and music videos; the movies can be watched free in some cases, or paid for via Amazon’s (AMZN) Video on Demand or Netflix (NFLX) Instant Streaming. In January, Clicker plans to incorporate shows and movies from iTunes, using Apple’s pay-and-download method.

Clicker is especially handy when you’re looking for a show that isn’t where you think it should be. “Seinfeld,” for example, is on TBS rather than NBC, where it originally aired, and only nine episodes are available at once before they rotate out and are replaced by nine more. “Friends” is found on theWB.com, rather than on NBC’s site. “Damages” isn’t available on its network site, FX; instead, it can be found at Crackle.com, another video-hosting site. It’s easy to understand why people settle for missing an episode rather than trying to find a show online.

Clicker finds over 400,000 television and Web-original episodes so you can search less and watch more.

Clicker also comes in handy when you’re querying something or someone you need to learn about. By typing in a term like “Thanksgiving travel,” I get news results from NBC’s “Nightly News with Brian Williams,” the “CBS Evening News” and the Associated Press. I also get tips for traveling during this busy time of year from an AOL Travel online video, as well as a 1968 episode of “The Beverly Hillbillies” called “The Thanksgiving Spirit.”

Clicker isn’t the site to use if you want to find the hot video clip that everyone is watching. When I searched for “Whitney Houston” the morning after the American Music Awards, the most recent video I found was the singer performing on “Good Morning America” in September—not the one showing her singing during the awards show the night before.

But the fact that Clicker can find Whitney Houston on “Good Morning America” is useful in itself. A search for Warren Buffett’s most recent appearance on the “Charlie Rose” show can be conducted in a similar manner—either by typing his name into the box at the top of the page or by opening the show’s page and searching within that show for anyone who has appeared as a guest. Performing a search within a show like this anywhere else is nowhere near as easy as on Clicker.

Playlist of Your Shows

Clicker can be used as a TiVo (TIVO) of sorts if you create a username on the site or simply sign in using Facebook Connect, which I did.

Users can make playlists where they can add just one episode, all episodes, or new episodes to this list—subscribing to receive all new episodes in the playlist as they become available. I added episodes of “The Amazing Race” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” to my playlist. This list can be accessed anytime, and it’s helpful for people who don’t have enough time to watch a show that they found. In December, email and Facebook notifications will be added to tell users that new episodes are in their playlists.

If you spend a lot of time in front of your computer and find yourself searching all over the Web for the TV shows you’d like to watch, Clicker will be a huge help. And even if your show isn’t available, you might find something similar—or better—in Clicker’s recommendations.

In the old days, Apple sometimes used bonafide celebrities to help hawk its products–either willing participants like Jeff Goldblum or, via the miracle of archival footage, icons like Einstein, Dylan and Lennon. But for its long-running “I’m a Mac” campaign, Apple has primarily relied on actors who are most famous for appearing in Apple ads.

Here’s a new one that splits the difference: It features Patrick Warburton, best known as “Puddy” on “Seinfeld”*. A good chunk of Apple’s target audience will get a kick out of seeing a tertiary character from an iconic sitcom. And the chunk that doesn’t know or care about “Seinfeld” will be the none the wiser. Clever!

The really clever part, of course, is Apple getting the likes of me to distribute its advertising, gratis.

Oh. Speaking of those Jeff Goldblum ads, this is an old meme but I find it entertaining anyway: Someone went ahead and took all of his old Mac spots and slowed them down to half-speed. Which gives you an impression of what Jeff Goldblum might be like if he was rambling on about Apple (AAPL) products at the end of a very long night of drinking. There’s a whole set here, but this should give you a taste:

*Jerry Seinfeld himself, of course, became a Microsoft (MSFT) pitchman for a brief, largely unsuccessful stint last year. But if you want to see him on TV this fall, check out the new season of HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiam,” where he’ll be appearing with all of his old cast-mates.

The irony is enough to make your head explode. The latest evolution of Microsoft’s (MSFT) new ad campaign–the one designed to seize back control of the Windows PC image that Apple has so mercilessly tarred and feathered–wasn’t even made on a PC.

It was made on a Mac. Metadata in the images of the stereotyped PC user featured on Microsoft’s “I’m a PC” site reveal that they were produced using Macs running Adobe Creative Suite 3, not PCs running Microsoft Expression Studio software.

My God. This is how Microsoft and its ad agency hope to turn Apple’s disparagement to their advantage?

I would have assumed that an advertising campaign touting Windows PCs over Macs would, you know, not be created on Macs. But then I don’t work for Microsoft. (To be fair, the Symbol devices Apple uses for roaming transactions in its retail stores do run Windows CE.

UPDATE: Microsoft issued the following statement on the matter:

As is common in almost all campaign workflow, agencies and production houses use a wide variety of software and hardware to create, edit and distribute content, including both Macs and PCs.”

Microsoft’s new ad campaign isn’t even a month old and already the company is de-featuring it. It’s dropping Jerry Seinfeld for the time being.

Microsoft claims it had always planned to do this. Seinfeld was part of “phase one” of the campaign, it says. But he’s not part of “phase two,” which will feature some new personalities as well as Microsoft’s own version of the dorky PC guy in Apple’s “I’m a Mac” ads.

That’s a reasonable explanation I suppose, though it’s a bit suspect given the response the campaign has elicited so far (you know your new ad campaign is a success when you’ve got to post an explanation of it on the company Web site). And, as Daring Fireball’s John Gruber points out, “no one signs Jerry Seinfeld for $10 million in a much-heralded deal to make just two spots that only run for a grand total of two weeks.”

Perhaps the idea of Gates and Seinfeld mingling with the proletariat wasn’t quite as humanizing as Microsoft had hoped.

In any event, Seinfeld is gone and “phase two” begins tonight with some 60-second spots that hope to reclaim the “I’m a PC” image that Apple’s made such a mockery of (see videos below). Among them, an ad featuring a dopplegänger of the dorky PC character in Apple campaign’s campaign. His line: “Hello. I’m a PC. And I’ve been made into a stereotype.”

Zing … ?

A brazen move, engaging Apple and acknowledging a marketing campaign that has done so much to undermine the Microsoft brand. But can Microsoft pull it off and turn Apple’s disparagement to its advantage? And is the best way of attempting to recast itself as a populist, and a populist with a $230 billion market cap at that? Recast itself like this?

Windows vs. Walls. This epic struggle explains why we make what we make and do what we do. The thing that gets us out of bed every day is the prospect of creating pathways above, below, around and through walls. To start a dialogue between hundreds of devices, billions of people and a world of ideas. To lift up the smallest of us. And catapult the most audacious of us. But, most importantly, to connect all of us to the four corners of our own digital lives and to each other. To go on doing the little stuff, the big stuff, the crazy stuff and that ridiculously necessary stuff. On our own or together. This is more than software we’re talking about. It’s an approach to life. An approach dedicated to engineering the absence of anything that might stand in the way … of life. Today, more than one billion people worldwide have Windows. Which is just another way of saying we have each other.”

Wha? Windows is just another way of saying we have each other?

I think I liked “Phase One” better … Is it too late to bring back Seinfeld?

Oh, and one last thing: If you’re going to take on Apple with a new advertising campaign, it’s probably not wise to make those ads on Macs …

Here’s BoomTown’s longer interview with the deceptively sharp Hulu CEO Jason Kilar, which I did while I was visiting the start-up recently.

In it, we discuss a wide range of topics about the premium online video service, which is a joint venture of NBC Universal (GE) and News Corp. (NWS) (owner of this site).

In it, he talks about everything from the reasons for the early success of Hulu to the state of content online in Hollywood to where it is all going to the sticky question of monetization (or lack thereof).

Also, when the heck is “Law & Order” going to be on Hulu? And “Seinfeld,” please.

(In addition, here is a video and post of my tour of Hulu HQ in Santa Monica, Calif., with Louie Swisher, who gives a very fine dance interpretation of the service at the start, I think you will agree.)

Don’t miss this very funny piece by AdAge columnist Simon Dumenco about suggestions for other new Facebook products in the wake of its Beacon fiasco.

For those not following this sordid tale, the hot social-networking site stumbled badly in its handling of a new ad product that broadcasts your purchases from external Web sites back to your Facebook news feed.

Facebook has had to backpedal a lot on Beacon, including issuing an apology last week for it from Founder Mark Zuckerberg.

In the wake of Beacon’s dimming (sort of), clever Simon thought up some more ideas for the feckless Facebookers, such as Facebook Questioning:

Writes Dumenco:

Are you a closeted homosexual in a small Southern town? Facebook Questioning will automatically suggest to those friends and colleagues who are able to ‘read between the lines’ that maybe you’re ‘questioning’ your sexuality. It does this by comparing Beacon data with thresholds of what’s considered ‘normal’ heterosexual behavior by marketers. ‘The purchase by an unmarried, middle-aged male of more than two movie-musical soundtracks or DVDs per quarter doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s gay,’ says a Facebook veep. ‘But it will raise a rainbow-colored flag within our algorithm and might even help certain in-denial Facebook users with their own voyage of self-discovery.”

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, as Seinfeld says a lot below:
