<p>In what is either the boldest gamble of its history or the most boneheaded, Yahoo has filed a massive patent infringement lawsuit against Facebook.</p>
<p>The attack by the Silicon Valley Internet icon against perhaps the most powerful consumer social networking site today &#8212; also based in tech&#8217;s heartland and also an important partner of Yahoo &#8212; is sure to be a controversial one, pitting Yahoo against a company that has surpassed it handily in recent years in regards to popularity among consumers.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook&#8217;s entire social network model, which allows users to create profiles for and connect with, among other things, persons and businesses, is based on Yahoo&#8217;s patented social networking technology,&#8221; Yahoo&#8217;s lawsuit reads, in part. </p>
<p>That includes, Yahoo alleges, Facebook&#8217;s popular News Feed, advertising methods, privacy settings and more. The company adds that Facebook has been &#8220;free riding&#8221; on Yahoo&#8217;s intellectual property and that royalty payments alone will not suffice.</p>
<p>So what does Yahoo want for this alleged free ride? Triple damages and to enjoin Facebook from operating by using said patents.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120312/worst-but-first-yahoo-uses-words-of-facebooks-zuckerberg-to-poke-him-in-patent-lawsuit/">19-page lawsuit over 10 patents</a> &#8212; related to advertising, privacy, customization, messaging and social networking &#8212; comes as Yahoo is seeking to right itself under new CEO Scott Thompson.</p>
<p>Multiple sources said he is primarily driving this new aggressiveness from Yahoo. </p>
<p>Since Yahoo told the New York Times that it was considering such a move last week, the issue has been <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120228/so-its-the-kodak-strategy-for-yahoo-the-last-refuge-of-the-vaguely-patented/">widely debated within the company</a>, with many top techies there opposed to it, due to the company&#8217;s longstanding ethos of using patents for defense rather than offense. </p>
<p>Thus, the decision to move was closely held, sources said, with only Thompson and legal chief Michael Callahan largely working on it.</p>
<p>Still, patent lawsuits have become ever more prevalent among tech companies, as they seek to battle for advantage in a rapidly changing competitive landscape. Apple, Google, Microsoft and others are involved in several legal actions, although they are largely related to mobile technology.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s lawsuit is the most prominent in the social networking arena, a sector that has seen a huge explosion of late. Its timing could not be worse for Facebook, since it is in a quiet period for its upcoming IPO, which is expected to value the company at close to $100 billion. </p>
<p>Yahoo has done this kind of thing before, of course, having wrangled with Google until right before it went public in 2004 over search patents from its Overture acquisition. The pair settled 10 days before the Google IPO, with Yahoo getting several million more shares of that stock.</p>
<p>Yahoo is shaking Facebook down for much more here and with much higher stakes for both companies. If successful, Yahoo could seriously damage Facebook&#8217;s initial public offering; if not, Yahoo will cement its growing reputation as a company with nothing to lose, whose value is built not on its current business, but on non-operating assets. </p>
<p>More importantly, at least initially, the move did nothing to boost Yahoo&#8217;s moribund shares &#8212; the stock was down about one percent to $14.49 in after-hours trading.</p>

<p>Said Yahoo, in its statement: </p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo! has invested substantial resources in research and development through the years, which has resulted in numerous patented inventions of technology that other companies have licensed. These technologies are the foundation of our business that engages over 700 million monthly unique visitors and represent the spirit of innovation upon which Yahoo! is built. Unfortunately, the matter with Facebook remains unresolved and we are compelled to seek redress in federal court. We are confident that we will prevail.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook, obviously, disagrees, and also threw in a jab about the lack of discussions over the issue between the pair:</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re disappointed that Yahoo, a longtime business partner of Facebook and a company that has substantially benefited from its association with Facebook, has decided to resort to litigation. Once again, we learned of Yahoo&#8217;s decision simultaneously with the media. We will defend ourselves vigorously against these puzzling actions.&#8221;</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll admit to also being puzzled about the <em>strategery</em> here, but I am sure there will be much more to come.</p>

<p>And here is what I wrote last week on the subject:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Apparently, Yahoo&#8217;s new motto: If you can&#8217;t beat &#8216;em &#8212; and it <em>can&#8217;t</em> &#8212; sue &#8216;em.</p>
<p>That would be Yahoo &#8212; the perpetual 98-pound weakling of the Internet these days &#8212; threatening powerful Facebook, which had cleanly bested it by attracting hordes of users with a plethora of popular products and services.</p>
<p>Yahoo has already lost its audience to Facebook, which was most recently followed by its frittering away a commanding lead in display advertising, too.</p>
<p>That would also be the Yahoo whose most recent success in improving its increasingly tenuous connections with customers was, in fact, by deeply integrating Facebook&#8217;s social hooks into its Web properties.</p>
<p>That would be the Yahoo which has failed time and again to innovate its own offerings so drastically over the years that it has now apparently decided that its first and best strategic move under Thompson’s rule is a shakedown.</p>
<p>Such a cynical move on rights Yahoo has long held seems more a play for the cheap seats of Wall Street, given that the company needs to look like it is doing everything it can to turn things around right now as it faces a proxy challenge.</p>
<p>First, it ended difficult talks with its Asian partners, Alibaba Group and SoftBank, over selling back lucrative stakes there.</p>
<p>Now, according to sources, Yahoo&#8217;s Thompson has actually been trying to make very nice with activist shareholder Daniel Loeb of Third Point &#8212; on-the-down-low chitchats that might have played a part of this latest unusual move.</p>
<p>At least Kodak had a good excuse. The once iconic camera company had recently been trying to take advantage of its trove of patents as a way to stave off declaring bankruptcy.</p>
<p>That didn&#8217;t work for Kodak, and it will also not work for Yahoo, whose only real option is to try to innovate its way out of the mess it has landed itself in.</p>
<p>You know, with good ideas.</p>
<p>Instead, the company&#8217;s leadership has opted for a road that could rain down trouble and paint Yahoo as a company bereft of talent to win any other way.</p>
<p>And while a range of intellectual property lawsuits have broken out all over the digital sector, involving Apple, Microsoft, Google and many others, such a strategy for Yahoo could be dangerous if it fails in its legal effort to take advantage of its 1,000-plus patents, including those related to search and advertising.</p>
<p>Others &#8212; including such tech luminaries as LinkedIn&#8217;s Reid Hoffman, who co-owns the seminal Six Degrees patent for constructing a networking database and system &#8212; hold a number of critical social networking patents, too, so who knows where this thing will go.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Yahoo has decided to emulate those companies with one of the few valuable assets it might have, waging its little war, right as Facebook is in the midst of its initial public offering period.</p>
<p>Yahoo has done this before, of course, having wrangled with Google until right before it went public in 2004 over search patents from its Overture acquisition. The pair settled 10 days before the Google IPO, with Yahoo getting several million more shares of that stock (which it then, of course, sold too soon).</p>
<p>That certainly could happen here, with Yahoo managing to grab a chunk of Facebook&#8217;s pre-IPO stock.<br />
That would mean that Yahoo’s most valuable asset would be those shares, as well as its stake in Asian companies it bought a while back for a bargain and now makes up a bulk of the company&#8217;s valuation.</p>
<p>As to Yahoo&#8217;s core business &#8212; investors consider it almost entirely worthless.</p>
<p>And let&#8217;s not forget: Facebook could also sue right back, which it very well might do. Or, perhaps, cut off agreeable ties that have aided Yahoo in recent years.</p>
<p>In other words, in poking Facebook, Yahoo might now learn what it is really like to be de-friended.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last Friday, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970204880404577225380456599176.html">a Wall Street Journal report revealed</a> that Google and some advertising companies had been circumventing privacy settings in order to follow users browsing through the Safari browsing on the iPhone and on the Web. Now, <a href="http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ie/archive/2012/02/20/google-bypassing-user-privacy-settings.aspx">Microsoft has said</a> that Google is working around the privacy settings on its browser, Internet Explorer, as well. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/MSFTGoogle.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/MSFTGoogle-371x285.png" alt="" title="MSFTGoogle" width="371" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-176248" /></a></p>
<p>In a blog post written by Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft&#8217;s corporate vice president for Internet Explorer, the software giant alleges that Google is using similar methods &#8212; though the actual bypass mechanism is different &#8212; to get around default privacy protections in Internet Explorer and track IE users with cookies.</p>
<p>By default, Microsoft says, Internet Explorer blocks third-party cookies, unless the site presents a &#8220;P3P Compact Policy Statement&#8221; indicating how the site will use the cookie and that ultimately the site won&#8217;t track the users.</p>
<p>&#8220;Technically, Google utilizes a nuance in the P3P specification that has the effect of bypassing user preferences about cookies &#8230; By sending this text, Google bypasses the cookie protection and enables its third-party cookies to be allowed rather than blocked,&#8221; the post reads.</p>
<p>Microsoft said it has contacted Google and asked them to commit to Microsoft&#8217;s standard privacy settings for browser users.</p>
<p>In the post, Microsoft also offered a <a href="http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/browser/p3p/">Tracking Protection List</a> that Internet Explorer 9 users can add as a protection, &#8220;in the event that Google continues this practice.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google has responded by saying that Microsoft has omitted important information in its blog post.</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft uses a &#8216;self-declaration&#8217; protocol (P3P) dating from 2002 under which Microsoft asks websites to represent their privacy practices in machine-readable form,&#8221; Google&#8217;s statement reads. &#8220;It is well known &#8212; including by Microsoft &#8212; that it is impractical to comply with Microsoft’s request while providing modern web functionality. We have been open about our approach, as have many other websites.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google went on to point out that in 2010, a <a href="http://www.cylab.cmu.edu/research/techreports/2010/tr_cylab10014.html">research report</a> from Carnegie Mellon University found that more than 11,000 of 33,139 Web sites were not issuing valid P3P policies as requested by Microsoft.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today the Microsoft policy is widely non-operational,&#8221; Google said. </p>
<p>The Wall Street Journal reported Google&#8217;s bypass of Safari&#8217;s privacy settings late last week, and after being contacted by the Journal, Google disabled the code that had allowed it to track Safari users. Three U.S. lawmakers have since <a href="http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/250301/us_lawmakers_call_on_ftc_to_investigate_google_over_safari_cookies.html?tk=rel_news">called on the FTC</a> to investigate the search giant over the privacy gaffe.</p>

<p>There are many other Fortune 500 CEOs in the same boat, and they certainly have plenty else to do with their time than post Facebook photos from Davos.</p>
<p>But non-Twittering CEOs are likely a dying breed, as transparency and authenticity in corporate communications come into vogue, and the younger generations move up through the ranks.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s entire executive leadership is particularly anti-social for an Internet company, although unlike Page, Eric Schmidt, its CEO of the last 10 years, had the gumption to at least <a href="http://twitter.com/ericschmidt">try Twitter</a> and post updates every couple of weeks.</p>
<p>That their bosses decline to participate in what many see as the future of the Web is <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101119/the-landscape-around-googles-hiring-binge/">particularly grating for some young Google employees</a>.</p>
<p>While the company circles around launching its own fully fledged social strategy, many Googlers feel that accountability for &#8220;getting social&#8221; starts at the top by leaders using the products themselves, rather than outright ignoring them.</p>
<p>Certainly, Page is incredibly private in all sorts of situations, both online and off. Here&#8217;s a memorable section from Ken Auletta&#8217;s book &#8220;Googled&#8221;:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Larry Page is aggressively disdainful of marketing and public relations. In early 2008, Page instructed Google&#8217;s public relations department, which consisted of 130 people, that he would only give them a total of eight hours of his time that year for press conferences, speeches or interviews.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>That doesn&#8217;t seem like an approach that will go over well now that Page will be CEO of a company of Google&#8217;s stature, although perhaps he could save some time by crafting short tweets in lieu of full speeches.</p>
<p>While Page seems to be ignoring the social Web&#8217;s existence (he <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sergey-brins-first-job-getting-google-social-figured-out-2011-1">said</a> Thursday he thinks it&#8217;s at the &#8220;very very early stages,&#8221; ceding comment on the topic to his co-founder Sergey Brin), the category has already had a significant competitive effect on Google.</p>
<p>The company <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110120/live-google-explains-why-larry-page-is-ceo/">says social is not yet negatively impacting its search business</a>, but there are other ways it is creeping in: Through a significant talent drain to companies like Facebook, and a tarnishing of the company&#8217;s position as a tech leader.</p>
<p>In a way, part of the reason Page took control seems to be in response to the rise of Facebook, although there are clearly many other factors at play).</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Page has now reinstated himself in a sacred position in Silicon Valley: The founder CEO.</p>
<p>One of the most impactful things the social Web has done is raised a new founder CEO to the tip-top of the tech industry: Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>And, according to sources, the rise of Zuckerberg has been especially hard for Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin to watch.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg was also just <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101215/glassy-eyed-zuckerberg-is-time-person-of-the-year/">named Time Magazine&#8217;s Person of the Year</a>, an honor Page and Brin have never received.</p>
<p>And his company also just arranged a deal to raise money at a $50 billion valuation, making his own stake worth <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110102/by-the-numbers-goldman-sachs-buddies-up-with-facebook/">$15 billion</a>, which happens to be the approximate net worth of each Page and Brin.</p>
<p>(As for Zuckerberg&#8217;s social media presence, he obviously uses Facebook quite actively, and also has a bare-bones <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/mark-zuckerberg/0/835/a34">LinkedIn profile</a> and a <a href="http://twitter.com/finkd">Twitter account</a> that hasn&#8217;t been updated in more than a year. And, like Page, he would not be considered a social butterfly in real life.)</p>
<p>So now Page has returned to presumably make Google innovative again with the passion of a founder. But with 10 years elapsed since he last had the job, he may want to go out and do a little personal market research on this whole social thing.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the most significant changes in Facebook&#8217;s profile page redesign this week was to highlight images&#8211;both pictures of users and pictures of their friends. As part of that, users who upgraded to the new profile (more info <a href="http://www.facebook.com/about/profile/">here</a>) now have a strip of their five most recently tagged photos running right under their basic information.</p>
<p>The crucial feature of Facebook photos is that, by default, friends can tag users in pictures without the users confirming that the pictures are actually of them. So with the new layout, friends can decide what pictures show at the top of a person&#8217;s profile. And for the more creative, they have five concatenated pictures in which to do so.</p>
<p>Facebook users are already having fun with this option, pranking each other to show inappropriate pictures and silly sequences of words. BuzzFeed ran an <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/dinoi/i-just-hi-jacked-a-co-workers-new-fb-profile-dj0">NSFW example of this</a> earlier this week, with one of its users apparently pulling the suggested prank on the Facebook of a fellow named Trent Reznor.</p>
<p>Users worried about their profiles being hijacked for everyone to see can change their privacy settings. (For instance, a user can limit who is allowed to see other people&#8217;s photos she is tagged in.)</p>

<p>“We as members of Congress are never inclined to censor testimony in open congressional hearings,” Rep. Zachary Space, an Ohio Democrat, said when introducing the professor, Eben Moglen. “But Congress tries to foster highest level of decorum. I would ask you to avoid personal attacks against any companies or company employees.”</p>
<p>The hearing focused on the possibility of legislation requiring data companies and Web browser makers to provide a “do not track” tool allowing people to opt out of having their Web surfing tracked.</p>
<p>In written remarks submitted before the hearing, Mr. Moglen did not mention “do not track” but talked generally about online privacy. He criticized Facebook Inc. extensively, describing the social networking site’s privacy settings as “mere deception.” Facebook “has uncontrolled access to everybody’s data, regardless of the so-called ‘privacy settings,’” he wrote.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Book lovers nowadays fall into one of two camps: They either eschew e-readers altogether, preferring the look and feel of print books; or they dive wholeheartedly into e-books, instantly downloading and racing through more titles by the handfuls. If you count yourself in the latter category, you&#8217;re in luck. </p>

<p>Starting this week, Barnes &#038; Noble will ship its $249 Nook Color (<a href="http://nookcolor.com">nookcolor.com</a>), a luxury model in the e-reader world currently dominated by the $139 monochrome Amazon.com Kindle. While the original Nook offered a gray-scale reading screen and a thin, color touch strip for browsing the bookstore, this model is one big color touch screen. It connects to the Web using only Wi-Fi and costs $100 more than last year&#8217;s comparable Wi-Fi Nook, but a Barnes &#038; Noble spokeswoman said that preorders online and in stores are far exceeding company expectations, with over twice as many as for last year&#8217;s Nook. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Nook Color over the past week and I like its book-size build and stylish design. Its user interface is inviting and its digital bookstore is redesigned to make shopping for books enjoyable. Nook Color is aimed at people who are primarily focused on reading but crave the iPad&#8217;s color and some of its versatility. </p>
<p>Like the Kindle, the Nook Color has a Web browser and some apps but no dedicated email program or way to access an app store. A spokeswoman for Barnes &#038; Noble says a full email program and app store are expected early next year. </p>
<p>The Nook Color is unapologetically focused on reading. It accesses Barnes &#038; Noble&#8217;s library of two million downloadable books and over 100 magazines and newspapers (fewer were available during my pre-release testing). The reader has a feature called ArticleView that displays magazine articles in a clear, readable format. You can highlight passages from books and then share them with friends through Facebook, Twitter or a limited, in-book email system. A LendMe feature gives users an easy way to digitally lend their books to friends for 14 days. And for kids, there&#8217;s a feature where popular stories are read aloud by people rather than a computer voice.</p>
<p>The Nook Color is more than just a bright, color screen: It&#8217;s built on the Android 2.1 operating system—the same mobile OS used to run many smartphones. This gives the device access to a full Web browser for tasks like reading favorite sites or checking Facebook, which I did easily. Early next year Nook Color will upgrade to Android 2.2, allowing it to play Flash videos. </p>

<p>Eight apps found in a section called Extras come loaded on the device including apps for Pandora Internet Radio, chess and Sudoku. I logged into my Pandora account, quickly retrieved my saved list of stations and played a QuickMix of music. I was able to work on a crossword puzzle or read a book or magazine on the Nook Color while still listening to Rihanna on the music app. Quickoffice software for Word, Excel and PowerPoint comes built into the Nook Color so users can view—but not edit—documents in these programs if they&#8217;re loaded onto the device with a MicroSD card. Until the Nook Color&#8217;s app store launches early next year, there&#8217;s no way to download free or paid apps. </p>
<p>Navigating around the Nook Color is a cinch. A tiny &#8220;n&#8221; just below the screen returns you to the home screen, which can be customized with photos loaded via a MicroSD card. The Daily Shelf is a dedicated horizontal section at the bottom of the home screen that updates whenever possible with new versions of newspapers (daily), magazines (weekly or monthly, if you subscribe) or books lent to you by friends. Anything on the Daily Shelf can be dragged out onto the home screen, placed anywhere and resized by pinching two fingers out or together. A Quick Nav button displays the Nook Color&#8217;s six sections: Library, Shop, Search, Extras, Web and Settings. A helpful &#8220;Keep Reading&#8221; prompt at the top of the home screen shows the last thing you were reading; selecting it sends you to right where you left off. </p>
<p>Nook Color weighs just under a pound, or twice as much as the  Kindle but still a half-pound lighter than Apple&#8217;s larger iPad. It felt a bit heavy in my hands as I read from it for a long period of time, but I solved that by leaning it against a desk or pillow.</p>
<p>While reading Stacy Schiff&#8217;s &#8220;Cleopatra: A Life,&#8221; I found a particularly interesting tidbit about first-century B.C. marriage contracts requiring wives to vow not to add love potions to their husbands&#8217; food or drink. I highlighted this passage by tapping once on the screen and dragging highlighter handles around it, and then sent it to friends via email with a built-in shortcut for sharing through email, Facebook or Twitter. I selected another passage and posted it on my Facebook wall for friends to read. All these posts had links to buy books from Barnes &#038; Noble.</p>
<p>I really enjoyed reading magazines on the Nook Color because these appeared much as they do in print. Brightly colored pages appeared one at a time when I held the device vertically, or two pages at a time in horizontal view. Magazines can be bought per issue or via subscriptions; a single current issue of House Beautiful was $4.50 or $1.99 with a subscription. The Quick Nav button works in magazines, too, so you can flick a finger right or left to skip ahead to specific sections or articles. </p>
<p>If you love reading and want to share your books with friends or reading updates with social networks, the Nook Color has you covered. It will also give you a taste of  tablet computing with functions like browsing the Web, using some apps and eventually, full emailing. Just remember that Nook Color is laser-focused on e-reading. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Silicon Valley is in the midst of a mini photo-sharing app boomlet. We have <a href="http://instagr.am/">Instagram</a> (which started adding 100,000 users per week as soon as it launched last month), <a href="http://picplz.com/">Picplz</a> (which beat out Instagram to get a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101110/no-its-not-instagram-photo-sharing-app-picplz-raises-5-million/">Series A</a> round with their shared investor, Andreessen Horowitz) and as of tonight <a href="https://www.path.com/">Path</a>, from former Facebook exec Dave Morin.</p>

<p>All three companies make mobile apps (primarily on the iPhone) that allow users to take and immediately share images with friends. It seems kind of simple and mundane, but all these smart people seem to think photo-sharing is the future.</p>
<p>Morin and Path are the most convincing about there being a larger idea behind what they&#8217;re doing. San Francisco-based Path is stubbornly focused on close personal connections&#8211;a.k.a. real friends.</p>
<p>Unlike every other social site, where there&#8217;s an implicit pressure to collect as many friends and followers as you can (and at the same time increase the site&#8217;s user numbers), Path is only for the people you really know and trust.</p>
<p>In order to force and foster that kind of sharing, Morin&#8217;s team has left out many of the social Web features we&#8217;re used to. Users can do only two things on Path: Share photos and view them.</p>
<p>There are no reciprocal friend relationships, no likes or comments, no fun photo-editing filters, no publishing photos to services like Facebook and Flickr, no editing something after you post and no global user search (you have to know the email or phone number for anyone you want to add).</p>
<p>And there are additional restrictions. Users can only ever share with a maximum of 50 people (though they can follow more than 50 people, if invited). Every single post has its own privacy settings&#8211;you can share with either only the people tagged in it, or only your share list. If you get sick of someone who&#8217;s sharing with you, you can &#8220;pause&#8221; that person until further notice. Users who don&#8217;t have iPhones can view photos on the Web.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/IMG_0626-200x300.jpg" alt="" title="IMG_0626" width="200" height="300" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-330" />The most interesting feature for me is that users see which of their contacts have viewed any one photo. So on Path, you can&#8217;t lurk in peace. People know when you&#8217;ve seen their posts. This might be a little creepy, but it also could cut down on those annoying awkward conversations that sometimes happen when you&#8217;ve seen someone post about something online and then they start telling you about it in person.</p>
<p>Photos are tagged with the location where they&#8217;re taken automatically, and users can add people and tags. If someone else takes a picture at that same location, tags that have been previously used near that place recently will be at the top of the list.</p>
<p>The idea is those tags will be used to help users relive their memories stored on the service. So, for instance, someone Morin shares with could retrace his &#8220;path&#8221; of wine tasting in Napa by zooming in on a map of the pictures he posted from California wine country.</p>
<p>But the thing is, if you want to go try Path (which you&#8217;ll be able to do in the U.S. and Canada as of 9 pm PT tonight by going to <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/path/id403639508?mt=8">Apple&#8217;s App Store</a>, and in the rest of the world within a few hours), it&#8217;s going to seem rather empty at first. You&#8217;ll have to seek out friends to share with from scratch&#8211;but even worse, nobody will be sharing with you until they decide to add you.</p>
<p>Unlike just about every other social service, Path is not really viral. At all. So even though it&#8217;s interesting, its numbers are highly unlikely to correspond favorably to those of competitors like Instagram. And after all, how many mobile photo-sharing apps are you really going to use?</p>
<p>&#8220;We really prioritize slow organic growth over hyper-viral growth and going after influencers to build this really steep graph,&#8221; said Morin, who formerly helped lead Facebook Platform and Facebook Connect before leaving the company in January. &#8220;We are building Path to be a 30-year brand.&#8221;</p>
<p>He added, &#8220;Many of the photo-sharing apps are photo-blogging apps and popularity contests. On Path, you should always feel comfortable being yourself.&#8221;</p>
<p>This antiviral stuff almost seems like overkill, but Morin grounds Path&#8217;s feature decisions in the theories of the evolutionary anthropologist Robin Dunbar (known for the oft-cited &#8220;Dunbar&#8217;s Number&#8221; of 150 acquaintances, he also proposes that 40-60 people is the outer bound of our personal networks) and Nobel prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman (who talked about the difference between experience and memory in a <a href="http://www.ted.com/talks/daniel_kahneman_the_riddle_of_experience_vs_memory.html">well-received TED Talk</a> on happiness).</p>
<p>If this hyper-personal stuff works, I think Path could potentially create a third major category of social network, distinct from the kind of relationships found on the two current giants, Facebook and Twitter. But let&#8217;s not get too far ahead of ourselves&#8211;and c&#8217;mon Dave, you should really let people comment on and like their friends&#8217; photos.</p>
<p>Path was co-founded by Morin, Shawn Fanning and Dustin Mierau, both formerly of Napster. The staff also includes Mallory Paine, who helped engineer the iPhone photo and camera apps for Apple, and Matt Van Horn, who formerly did business development at Digg. Fanning is chairman and landlord of the company but is working on his own other projects day-to-day.</p>
<p>Path has already raised a jumbo seed round with Index Ventures, First Round Capital, Founders Fund and Betaworks. The company also provided us with an extensive list of individual angel investors: Ron Conway, Kevin Rose, Ashton Kutcher, Keith Rabois, Dustin Moskovitz, Marc Benioff, Gary Vaynerchuk, Steve Anderson, Tim Draper, Joi Ito, Fadi Ghandour, Matt Cohler, Sam Lessin, Bill Randuchel, Karl Jacob, Paul Buchheit, Ruchi Sanghvi, John Couch, Michael Parekh, Claudio Chiuchiarelli, Maurice Werdegar, Don Dodge, and Chris Kelly.</p>

<p>Correcting yet another too-early rumor, sources tell BoomTown that&#8211;as has been previously reported many times in many places&#8211;Microsoft and Apple are in long-term talks about adding the Bing search service as a prominent option on the iPhone and <em>not</em> as a replacement of Google.</p>
<p>Currently, Google (GOOG) is the default search on the popular mobile device, although you can easily go into its settings and switch the search option to Yahoo (YHOO). Few consumers do, though.</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT) has been angling to be added to the search options for a long time, but has wanted to do so in a way that makes the choice more visible.</p>
<p>And it is probably a good idea to give users of the iPhone more choice in a wide range of services.</p>
<p>But, whether Apple would make Microsoft&#8217;s Bing the default or whether it would simply allow iPhone users more of a choice among search services is unclear.</p>
<p>In addition, Microsoft wants to make its Bing mapping more integrated with the Apple (AAPL) iPhone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Being an option is what&#8217;s on the table,&#8221; said one source briefed on the talks. &#8220;That&#8217;s all for now, although who knows where it could lead?&#8221;</p>
<p>But, cautioned several sources, talks are not complete, even though the software giant is eager to be able to announce such a deal at <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100524/steve-jobs-to-keynote-apples-wwdc-conference">Apple&#8217;s upcoming developers</a> conference on June 7.</p>
<p>Microsoft execs have been nervous about completing such a deal, especially because Apple is notoriously secretive and is known to end talks due to leaks.</p>
<p>That said, relations between Apple and Google have become increasingly tense, as their product offerings&#8211;especially in the mobile arena&#8211;have become competitive.</p>
<p>Google was one of Apple&#8217;s principal partners on the iPhone upon its launch and its services are prominent on the device.</p>
<p>But, as the device has evolved, sources say Apple has been considering a number of search options, as well as mapping, for the iPhone.</p>
<p>Google execs have been anticipating this, of course, especially as the search giant has pushed development of its Android mobile operating system.</p>
<p>In fact, a recent developers conference that Google had in San Francisco, its top execs spent a lot of time <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100521/viral-video-googles-laughable-but-not-funny-apple-tantrum">publicly attacking Apple</a>.</p>
<p>Thus, it is likely that its top-level placement on the iPhone and other Apple products will diminish.</p>
<p>While being an option is not the same as completely replacing Google, it would give Bing a well-known platform to show off its technology to consumers.</p>
<p>Microsoft would like to hip-check Google off of the iPhone, of course.</p>
<p>But like rumors that it would pay News Corp. (NWS) to &#8220;de-index&#8221; its content from Google and display it prominently on Bing, the notion is premature.</p>

Within hours of Facebook’s announcement of new privacy controls, four of its most outspoken critics weighed in on them. And all had positive things to say. </p>
<p>There was this from the Progress &#038; Freedom Foundation: &#8220;By giving users powerful new tools to further protect their privacy, Facebook has employed a potent weapon to deal with marketplace apprehensions: self-regulation.&#8221;</p>
<p>This from Democratic Senator Charles Schumer of New York: &#8220;Facebook has heard the call of its users and realizes that much greater privacy protections are needed. This is a significant first step that Facebook deserves credit for.&#8221;</p>
<p>This from the ACLU: &#8220;After months of privacy-failing moves, Facebook is finally friending privacy again&#8230;.While it’s true that users have more control than they did yesterday, there are still important steps that must be taken.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, finally, this from the <a href="http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2010/05/facebooks-new-privacy-improvements-are-positive">Electronic Frontier Foundation</a>: &#8220;The changes are pretty good, though more is needed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Consensus, then, seems to be that the privacy settings Facebook introduced today are an improvement over the old. That said, it’s important to remember that the old were sorely lacking, that the new were introduced under duress and that they <strong>DON&#8217;T</strong> do one thing that critics have been clamoring for: <em>Make the highest privacy settings the default.</em></p>
<p>Which is really pretty weak, when you think about it, as Jeffrey Chester at the Center for Digital Democracy notes:</p>

Facebook made some positive changes today, but only because of political pressure from policymakers and privacy advocates on both sides of the Atlantic. Mr. Zuckerberg&#8217;s failure to acknowledge the political realities don&#8217;t bode well for Facebook&#8217;s future approach to privacy: he appears to be living a Alice in Digital Wonderland fantasy, where he only makes changes on privacy because he has the goodwill of its users in mind. Just last December 9, after all, Facebook made one of its typical self-reverential announcements that it was &#8220;rolling out easy-to-use tools to empower people to personalize control over their information.&#8221; These changes triggered a user revolt, letters from Senators, an opinion ordering a reversal from the EU, and concern from the FTC.</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/05/privacy-263x300.gif" alt="" title="privacy" width="263" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-41481" />As an apology for betraying the trust of Facebook&#8217;s 400 million members, founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/05/23/AR2010052303828.html">equivocating editorial in the Washington Post</a> Monday was as half-assed as it was late. Facebook may have moved &#8220;too fast&#8221; by <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100513/facebook-privacy-options-chart-would-make-a-great-halloween-corn-maze/">revising its privacy policy and tools in a way that makes more of its members’ personal information public</a>, he conceded. &#8220;We move quickly to serve [our] community with new ways to connect with the social Web and each other,&#8221; Zuckerberg wrote. &#8220;Sometimes we move too fast.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Sometimes we move too fast.</em> </p>
<p>That&#8217;s an apology of sorts, I suppose. But it&#8217;s not an apology for further loosening Facebook&#8217;s privacy safeguards or for the speed with which Facebook loosened them. In other words, it&#8217;s a comment on the execution of a policy, not on the policy itself.  </p>
<p>By saying &#8220;we move too fast,&#8221; Zuckerberg isn&#8217;t admitting that Facebook was headed in the wrong direction with respect to user privacy; <em>he&#8217;s saying Facebook was headed in right direction all along</em>, just a bit too quickly&#8211;for those of us with reasonable expectations or privacy, anyway.</p>
<p>Which makes you wonder about Facebook&#8217;s claim that its changing privacy policy and tools reflect &#8220;shifting social norms around privacy.&#8221; </p>
<p>Do they really? </p>
<p>Or is Facebook itself attempting to shift those norms in its quest for revenue? After all, there’s great money to be made in the sort of behavioral advertising that Facebook&#8217;s user data makes possible&#8211;great money to be made in monetizing our privacy and reputations.</p>
<p>So the unveiling this morning of what Facebook claims are &#8220;enhanced, simpler&#8221; privacy controls is interesting, to say the least. How does a company so clearly prejudiced against privacy assuage concerns that it might violate privacy?  </p>
<p>With a new set of &#8220;granular data permissions,&#8221; Zuckerberg said this morning <a href="http://www.facebook.com/privacy/explanation.php">(here&#8217;s Facebook&#8217;s guide explaining them)</a>.</p>

<p>&#8220;First, we&#8217;ve built one simple control to set who can see the content you post,&#8221; he explained in a <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=391922327130">blog post</a> published to coincide with the announcement. &#8220;Second we&#8217;ve reduced the amount of basic information that must be visible to everyone and we are removing the connections privacy model&#8230;.Third, we&#8217;ve made it simple to control whether applications and Web sites can access any of your information.&#8221; (Click image below to enlarge.)</p>

<p>Evidently, there will be a simple control that applies to all content retroactively and to new products going forward. If, for example, you set your preference to friends-of-friends, that will be your historic default as well as your default going forward.</p>

<p>For applications, access to member information has been &#8220;dramatically&#8221; limited. There will be a single check box to opt out of information-sharing with third-party sites. Said Zuckerberg: &#8220;The net effect of this is that all applications are going to have restricted access to your personal information.&#8221;</p>
<p>And for Facebook Platform, the company is adding an &#8220;easy&#8221; opt-out for instant personalization. Finally,  Facebook is differentiating between &#8220;basic directory&#8221; information and the more personal information in its members’ profiles. Directory information must be public so friends can find one another, and  &#8220;allowing people to find you on Facebook is a very different use case than sharing your information.&#8221;</p>

<p>As a privacy tool overhaul, this is fairly substantial. And it does seem to address many complaints about the previous system. But it doesn’t do one thing that many critics have called for: Make the highest privacy settings the default.</p>
<p>Why not? Said Zuckerberg: &#8220;We’re trying to make the system simple to use. Facebook has never worked in a way where you sign up and only your friends can see your personal information. The point of the site is to allow you to connect with new friends and friends of friends. And that’s always been a really important part of how Facebook has worked. It’s really important to help people share simply by default.&#8221;</p>
<p>With their friends, perhaps. But not with anonymous companies. In that case, you’d think most people would want to limit that &#8220;sharing&#8221; by default. But that would undermine Facebook&#8217;s business model, wouldn&#8217;t it? </p>
<p>Evidently, outrage over the company&#8217;s privacy missteps hasn&#8217;t been sufficient to effect that particular change. &#8220;We really think about the trust issues,&#8221; Zuckerberg explained. &#8220;A lot of people right now are upset with us about these changes, and I take that really seriously&#8230;and I don’t mean to diminish privacy concerns&#8230;.but all these blogs are talking about Delete-Your-Facebook-Pages campaigns and we&#8217;ve seen no meaningful change to our usage stats.&#8221;</p>
<p>So how does Zuckerberg answer accusations that Facebook doesn’t care about privacy, that his company preys on people who have an expectation of privacy but don’t necessarily understand the implications of putting their personal information on Facebook? </p>
<p>&#8220;People perceive that we don’t care about privacy and that’s just not true,&#8221; he said. &#8220;People want to share information and there’s got to be a balance. They’ve got to have control over how they share their information and that’s where the world is going&#8230;.We’ve learned time and time again that privacy is a sensitive thing. Now we feel like we have a privacy model that will scale as we add more users&#8230;.And hopefully, we won’t be messing with it for a long time.&#8221;</p>

<p>Facebook has enlisted a former senior Bush administration regulator to <a href="http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/c1ce050a-5b92-11df-85a3-00144feab49a.html">defend its privacy practices in Washington</a>. Tim Muris, an attorney at law firm O’Melveny &#038; Myers who served as chairman of the Federal Trade Commission from 2001 to 2004, is advising the company, whose privacy disclosures and <a href="http://consumerist.com/2010/05/five-scary-facebook-monsters-just-waiting-to-grab-you.html">fast and loose handling of user data</a> are increasingly drawing scrutiny on Capitol Hill.</p>
<p>Indeed, on May 5, the Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a <a href="http://epic.org/2010/05/new-facebook-privacy-complaint.html">complaint</a> with the FTC alleging that Facebook has engaged in unfair and deceptive trade practices in violation of consumer protection law. </p>
<p>&#8220;[The site] continues to manipulate the privacy settings of users and its own privacy policy so that it can take personal information provided by users and make it widely available for commercial purposes,&#8221; the Washington-based advocacy group said. &#8220;The company has done this repeatedly and users are becoming increasingly frustrated and angry.&#8221;</p>
<p>Clearly, the Facebook privacy backlash, which has been building for years now, has begun in earnest. </p>
<p>What better time, then, to seek the help of someone like Muris, who created the popular U.S. Do Not Call Registry and just last week <a href="http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2010/05/kirkpatrick.shtm">received the Miles W. Kirkpatrick Award</a> &#8220;for his significant and lasting contributions to the FTC, antitrust law, and the cause of consumer protection.&#8221;</p>
<p>Reached for comment, Facebook said Muris is not an official employee. &#8220;There have been some reports that Tim Muris has joined Facebook,&#8221; the company told me. &#8220;Muris has not joined Facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>But he is serving as a consultant, something sources close to the company have told me, though Facebook declined to comment on.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apps are hot. These are the small programs that can be installed on a digital gadget to get it to do more than what it did when you bought it. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and iPod Touch are the best app platforms right now thanks to the company&#8217;s App Store, which offers an estimated 125,000 apps. Research in Motion (RIMM), Android, and Palm (PALM) devices also work with apps.</p>
<p>But why should smart phones have all the fun? Yahoo (YHOO) Connected TVs from Samsung, LG (LG), Sony (SNE), and Vizio allow people to load app-like &#8220;widgets&#8221;—including Facebook, Twitter, weather and stock quotes—onto their big-screen TVs. And GPS navigation devices take advantage of apps for information on fuel prices and traffic. </p>

<p>This week, I tested a Bluetooth earpiece that also can be made smarter with apps: Aliph&#8217;s $100 Jawbone Icon (http://us.jawbone.com). Like many other wireless earpieces, it connects to your Bluetooth-enabled phone so you can talk, hands-free. Unlike other Bluetooth earpieces, the Jawbone Icon can be plugged into a computer and loaded with different settings and apps. This works using Aliph&#8217;s Web-based software platform called MyTalk (http://mytalk.jawbone.com) and some apps enable more than hands-free talking. </p>
<p>For now, there are only two apps that truly expand the functionality of the earpiece, in my opinion. But MyTalk is a good start in making this tiny Bluetooth device more sophisticated and encouraging more hands-free productivity.</p>
<p>The idea of connecting an earpiece to a PC is helpful in two respects. First, it turns the Jawbone into a dynamic product that can be updated and enhanced over time, rather than never changing from the day you buy it. Second, it lets users more easily adjust the settings of a device that&#8217;s too tiny to have its own screen, thus eliminating the need for more confusing buttons on the device. Over time, these earpieces could become even simpler and smaller as more of their settings are adjusted on the computer.</p>
<p>Since the Jawbone Icon and its MyTalk software platform launched this week, only five &#8220;dial apps&#8221; and 10 &#8220;audio apps&#8221; are available for synching to the earpiece. The former are apps that perform functions by dialing out on your phone, like hands-free text messaging; the latter are settings to adjust the voice making announcements in your ear, like telling you that the battery needs charging. As of now, only one of each app category can be synched onto the Jawbone Icon at any given time. Aliph plans to make the Icon capable of simultaneously running multiple apps sometime this year.</p>
<p>If you ever used one of the earlier Jawbone models and thought you weren&#8217;t hip enough to remember how its hidden earpiece buttons worked, the Jawbone Icon&#8217;s refreshingly simple design will bring a sigh of relief. It uses two easily detected controls. One is an obvious button on the top of the earpiece that controls the earpiece&#8217;s functions. The other is a tiny on/off switch on the inside surface that couldn&#8217;t be easier to use. </p>

<p>The Icon comes in six models with catchy names that match the &#8220;persona&#8221; of the  audio apps: The Hero, The Rogue, The Ace, The Catch, The Thinker and The Bombshell—each literally has its own distinct voice. Each device weighs less and has a wider and shorter design than previous Jawbones. The Icons come in shades of black, silver, white, red and gold, depending on the model&#8217;s persona, and resemble handsome jewelry. </p>
<p>Each earpiece has a short, gray bendable USB connector that allows for easy  access to a PC&#8217;s USB port. This is used for synching and charging the earpiece, though a separate wall charger also comes in the box. </p>
<p>I tested my Jawbone Icon by plugging it into both an Apple MacBook Pro and a Dell (DELL) running Windows 7. I logged onto http://mytalk.jawbone.com and requested an invitation to use the MyTalk software by sending Aliph my email since it&#8217;s still in a &#8220;private beta&#8221; or experimental phase. You&#8217;ll have to do the same until MyTalk comes out of its private beta stage sometime in the next few months. </p>
<p>After setting up an account using my email and a password, I followed on-screen instructions to get started with synching apps to my earpiece.</p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s dial apps include five programs that help you do more with your voice, so you don&#8217;t need to look down to type on a mobile device. Once synched with your Jawbone Icon, the app will activate as soon as you press and hold the earpiece button. </p>
<p>For now, only two of the five dial apps are really helpful for the headset: Jott and Dial2Do. Both let people use their voice to send themselves reminders, send tweets on Twitter, and send text messages—assuming the programs correctly interpret what is dictated. I had pretty good luck with this, though one test of the text-messaging function thought I said &#8220;needle&#8221; when I really said &#8220;noodle&#8221; and another interpreted &#8220;blinds&#8221; as &#8220;blind.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of the two, I found Dial2Do a little easier to use. Its Basic Account is free but is limited to sending yourself reminders, while a Pro Account costs $40 a year or $3.99 a month, and offers social-networking, emailing and text-messaging, among other things. Jott can only be used free for one week, but requires a credit-card number for signing up and will charge $2.95 a month after the trial week is over. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s remaining three dial apps aren&#8217;t too exciting: &#8220;Directory Assistance 411&#8243; and &#8220;Voice Dial,&#8221; a feature that only works if your phone has built-in voice-dial capability, which most do now. Another app called 1-800-FREE411 lets users get 411 information without being charged carrier fees. </p>
<p>MyTalk&#8217;s audio apps include six playful voices, three in different languages (German, Spanish and French) and one plain, unaccented English voice. Each of the playful voices has a coinciding photo and name when you&#8217;re picking settings on the Web site. One called &#8220;The Bombshell&#8221; is represented by an attractive, blonde woman who speaks in a sexy voice. A voice called &#8220;The Rogue&#8221; says, &#8220;I am ready for my assignment,&#8221; when the earpiece is turned on. During most of my testing, I kept my Jawbone Icon set on &#8220;The Ace,&#8221; represented by a woman with a smart British accent who said, &#8220;They can wait,&#8221; when I declined calls. </p>
<p>The chosen audio app voice speaks every so often, like when the device is turned on, when you query the headset&#8217;s remaining battery life (an indicator light also tells you the remaining charge), when an incoming call is received or when you turn the headset off. But the Voice Dial app uses the standard voice that comes with your device&#8217;s voice-dialing capability—not the fun audio app voice you&#8217;ve chosen. </p>
<p>Another downside to the headset is that it isn&#8217;t yet able to tell you the name of whoever is calling even if you have them as a contact in your phone; instead, it only reads the phone number aloud. If you&#8217;re like me, you don&#8217;t know have many numbers memorized anymore, so this isn&#8217;t helpful. Instead, it forced me to look at my phone for the caller ID, defeating the purpose of a hands-free earpiece. Aliph hopes to fix this problem within a year.</p>
<p>The Jawbone Icon is the first earpiece to use a software platform for adding apps, and MyTalk makes synching easy. Although Aliph plans to offer more apps and software updates for the Jawbone Icon (and subsequent devices), there will likely always be some activities that are simply too difficult to perform using voice alone. But MyTalk is a good first step toward making the Bluetooth earpiece more useful.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Are you ready to take a step closer to the digital-camera big leagues? Many people who have used a basic point-and-shoot camera for several years are ready to bring it up a notch.</p>
<p>The next logical category of camera after basic point-and-shoots (and before digital single-lens reflex, SLR, cameras) are the so-called megazoom cameras, capable of zeroing in on a subject with around 20x optical zoom strength. They also have fairly high megapixel counts, capturing about 10 to 12 MP each, and offer several automatic and manual settings for capturing photos.</p>

<p>Most of the cameras in this category resemble SLRs, with bulkier builds and protruding zoom lenses. But they cost somewhere in the $400 range—significantly less expensive than SLRs, which often cost over $1,000 for the camera body alone (lenses are typically sold separately). If you don&#8217;t want to spend the money or you aren&#8217;t completely sure you want to commit to learning the ins and outs of an SLR, this midrange model is a sound compromise.</p>
<p>Of course, these cameras have some downsides. Serious photographers who have grown accustomed to the high-quality photos of SLRs will point out the comparatively poorer photo quality of megazooms. But for average users like me, the quality of photos captured using a megazoom digital camera is a welcome upgrade from a point-and-shoot.</p>
<p>Another significant difference for point-and-shoot users will be adjusting to the size and overall bulk of megazoom cameras. Users can&#8217;t toss them into a small purse or pocket on the way out the door like they do with compact point-and-shoots. Instead, megazooms are usually seen hanging from neck straps or stowed away in camera shoulder bags.</p>

<p>Some smaller cameras are categorized as megazooms, including the Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS1K and Casio Exilim EX-H10BK, though both look more like thick point-and-shoot cameras. These Panasonic (PC) and Casio models cost between $250 and $300 and offer 12x and 10x optical zooms, respectively. But they aren&#8217;t capable of some of the more advanced features found on expensive megazooms—like 24x optical zoom or some manual settings and shooting modes.</p>
<p>This Christmas, I was fortunate to receive one such megazoom camera, the Nikon Coolpix P90, which costs around $400. Though I&#8217;ve used other cameras in this category, I was especially struck by how the capabilities of this megazoom altered my photo-capturing behavior.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">In the Snow</h5>
<p>Granted, not everyone will react as I did, but I took my camera and set out on photography jaunts around my neighborhood in Washington, D.C., scaling piles of snow to capture just the right angle, and using tree branches to frame shots of the Capitol in the distance. </p>
<p>The details and colors in the photos that my camera captured were so much more vivid than those on my admittedly older point-and-shoot that I wondered what took me so long to make the upgrade.</p>
<p>I spent the first week with this camera using it in its Auto setting—an old habit that carried over from my point-and-shoot days (also because I didn&#8217;t have time to read through the manual). </p>
<p>But even in the automatic mode, photos looked astonishingly good—prompting compliments from family and friends. A week later, I delved into the camera&#8217;s user manual and learned how to use many more features.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Downside</h5>
<p>One big downside: Though the Nikon Coolpix P90 weighs only 16.2 ounces, its bulky shape prohibits it from being carried along on a whim. </p>
<p>I brought the camera on a family vacation, but left it in my room rather than trying to fit it in my bag during a trip to the beach and on a zip line ride through the rain forest. A compact point-and-shoot would&#8217;ve easily fit into a pocket.</p>
<p>But then I have my BlackBerry Curve 8900&#8242;s camera—with 3.2 megapixels, auto focus and a built-in flash—for snapping photos on the go. (Plus, I can instantly share the shots via email, Facebook or Twitter.) </p>
<p>As more mobile devices include good quality cameras, like Google&#8217;s (GOOG) new $179 (with T-Mobile) Nexus One super-smart phone with five megapixels and a flash, fewer people will need to carry point-and-shoots for quickly capturing digital memories.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">A Pleasure to Edit</h5>
<p>Editing photos captured by a megazoom is a real pleasure. I cropped and zoomed to my heart&#8217;s content, noticing more details in photos after looking at them on my computer than when I initially took the pictures. When I needed to trim someone or something out of a shot, I didn&#8217;t worry about degrading the photo&#8217;s overall quality. And because of their high resolution, my photos can be enlarged with very little quality or color compromise.</p>

<p>In addition to Nikon, many other companies make cameras for the megazoom category. Some examples are Canon&#8217;s $400 PowerShot SX20 IS, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) $480 Cyber-shot DSC-HX1 and Casio&#8217;s $400 EX-FH20. These offer several shooting modes, as well as scene modes for common settings like sunsets, backlight, night portraits, burst mode and panoramas. They have optical and/or digital-image stabilization to thwart shaky hands, settings for focusing in on a subject manually or automatically, and ways to save frequently used manual settings.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Flash Features</h5>
<p>Some megazooms have built-in flashes, while others use an external mount so that a flash can be snapped on or off for use. (My Nikon came with a built-in flash.) They often have more than one flash that fits in the mount, leaving users with the choice of which one to use. </p>
<p>The digital cameras include LCD viewing screens as well as optical viewfinders. (The latter is commonly left off of many small point-and-shoot cameras, but it&#8217;s really helpful for people who want to hold the camera up to one eye for steadier shooting.) </p>
<p>Some LCD screens, like the Canon&#8217;s, swing out and swivel around. The Nikon&#8217;s can be adjusted up 90 degrees or down 45 degrees for shooting below or above a subject.</p>
<p>No matter which model, the megazoom category of digital cameras offers a combination of advanced features and affordability that could entice people who are ready to take the next step into a world of more serious digital photography.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/zuckerberg-rocks.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-13862" title="zuckerberg rocks" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2009/12/zuckerberg-rocks-250x187.jpg" alt="zuckerberg rocks" width="250" height="187" /></a>The clamor about <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091209/facebook-rolls-out-new-privacy-settings-encourages-users-to-abandon-privacy/">Facebook&#8217;s changes to its privacy policy</a>&#8211;the ones whereby the social network encourages its users to abandon their privacy&#8211;is getting louder.</p>
<p>Today, a coalition of privacy groups, led by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission asking the regulators to force Facebook to turn on its old settings. The complaint, and Facebook&#8217;s response, are at the bottom of this post.</p>
<p>I have no idea if the Feds will end up getting Facebook to do anything. But the privacy groups can still accomplish a lot without injunctive relief.</p>
<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;re going to do is drag Facebook into the halls of the FTC, and have them examine all of their policies,&#8221; says Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, one of the groups backing the complaint.</p>
<p>That could certainly slow down the company. So could inquiries from European governments, which have become more inclined to regulate American technology outfits. Just ask <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091216/european-commission-microsoft/">Microsoft</a> (MSFT).</p>
<p>The real concern for Facebook is if the private sector starts complaining. Recall that Facebook only reversed course on its ill-fated Beacon project two years ago after <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/11/30/coke-is-holding-off-on-sipping-facebooks-beacon/">advertisers started questioning the program</a>, which was designed to share your shopping and branding choices with your pals.</p>
<p>Since that debacle, marketers seem to have gotten comfortable with Facebook, and Mark Zuckerberg has a real ad business now. And I&#8217;ve yet to hear a peep from big brands with second thoughts. But if the privacy blowback gets big enough, that could change.</p>
<p>Again, I don&#8217;t think the proposition that Facebook is offering its users&#8211;the opportunity to share every detail about their online lives with anyone with a browser&#8211;is an inherently bad one. There are lots of people who are comfortable with the notion.</p>
<p>The problem is that Facebook has switched course midstream. It started off as a site that limited users&#8217; information to the outside world and now wants to invert that. But the switch has been badly explained, done in such a way that many users don&#8217;t understand what happened.</p>
<p>Facebook says this criticism is overblown and that lots of people do understand the switch. Spokesman Barry Schnitt says at least half of Facebook&#8217;s users have made changes to their privacy settings since the new rules went into place. Which means, he argues, that at least half of its users understand them.</p>
<p>Entirely possible. But Facebook now has up to 350 million users. Which means that tens of millions of users could be unaware of what&#8217;s going on. And they&#8217;ll only find out when their party pictures or baby videos or whatever turn up on Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>Facebook could easily solve this by clearly explaining that its &#8220;Share With Everyone&#8221; option really does mean <em>everyone</em> and&#8211;crucially&#8211;making it an opt-in proposition. But then adoption rates would shrivel, and the company wouldn&#8217;t be able to pull off its goal: Making as much of the site as public as possible.</p>
<p>This one isn&#8217;t going away anytime soon.</p>

<p>Facebook&#8217;s plan to provide users control over their privacy and how they share content is unprecedented in the Internet age. We have gone to great lengths to inform users about our platform changes, beginning with our July announcement; founder Mark Zuckerberg’s open letter to our 350 million users; our robust press and analyst outreach; the notice-and-comment framework for our new privacy policy; and simple customization tools for users.</p>
<p>We’re pleased that so many users have already gone through the process of reviewing and updating their privacy settings and are impressed that so many have chosen to customize their settings, demonstrating the effectiveness of Facebook’s user empowerment and transparency efforts.  Of course, the new tools offer users the opportunity to decide on privacy with every photo, link or status update they wish to post, so the process of personalizing privacy on Facebook will continue.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook is rolling out new privacy settings that it <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090701/facebooks-new-privacy-policy-share-everything-with-everyone/">first began talking about in July</a>. The company is holding a press conference this morning to walk us media types through the change, but here&#8217;s the main thing every Facebook user ought to know: Facebook wants users to share as much about themselves&#8211;with everyone on the Internet&#8211;as they can.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a screenshot of the new privacy settings menu Facebook presented to me today. Note that the <em>default settings</em> for most of my data are set to &#8220;Everyone&#8221; (click image to enlarge):<br />

<p>But what does &#8220;Everyone&#8221; actually mean? It means anyone with access to the Web. But you&#8217;ll need to read the fine print below the settings to figure that one out:</p>

<p>Important note: Facebook says these settings won&#8217;t be the default for anyone under age 18, and that kids will be prevented from sharing much of their information outside of Facebook. The company also says that users who have tweaked their privacy settings in the past will find those settings as the default when they first visit their privacy page. The majority of users, though, will end up with the &#8220;Everyone&#8221; default.</p>
<p>That said, the &#8220;share everything with everyone&#8221; strategy is a crucial part of Facebook&#8217;s effort to supplant Google (GOOG) as the Web&#8217;s key data repository. And I don&#8217;t have a problem with it, in theory: Like <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/12/07/google-ceo-on-privacy-if_n_383105.html">Eric Schmidt</a> (and<a href="http://www.wired.com/politics/law/news/1999/01/17538"> Scott McNealy</a> before him), I don&#8217;t think there&#8217;s much privacy on the Web to begin with. Still, even though people don&#8217;t tend to behave as if privacy is important to them on the Web, they certainly like to complain about it.</p>
<p>And for what it&#8217;s worth, I have gone ahead and deselected the &#8220;Everyone&#8221; option for my stuff. If you want to see video of my toddler toddling, you&#8217;re going to have to be one of my 466 &#8220;friends.&#8221;</p>
<p>My bet: Facebook is going to end up hearing from all sorts of folks who didn&#8217;t realize they&#8217;re sharing everything with &#8220;everyone&#8221; and are now upset about it. And I think Facebook will end up by changing its default settings sooner than later.</p>

By early reports, it&#8217;s fast, easy on the eyes and fixes most of the problems that plagued its predecessor, Vista. But while Microsoft (MSFT) employees are doing the dance of joy, some consumers are confused and scared about the prospect of upgrading their computers to Windows 7.</p>

<p>The upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 is particularly daunting because it requires first wiping the computer&#8217;s hard disk to perform what&#8217;s called a &#8220;custom&#8221; or &#8220;clean&#8221; install. This clears out the old operating system—as well as all of your programs, files and settings. To save personal files, XP users must back them up first, typically on an external hard disk, then transfer them back. Programs, however, will be lost altogether, so users must re-install these using their original CDs or installation files, and then also re-install all the program updates they&#8217;ve accumulated over the years.</p>
<p>People upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista may have it easier. In some common cases, they can upgrade to Windows 7 &#8220;in place,&#8221; which means they can save programs, files and settings right where they were. But since Vista was such a dud, many Windows users still use XP.</p>
<p>This week, I tested a program that tries to make the upgrade to Windows 7 just as easy for XP users as it is for some Vista users. I tested Laplink Software Inc.&#8217;s PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant (<a href="http://bit.ly/JeafI">http://bit.ly/JeafI</a>), a $15 program that saves programs, files and settings on the computer in a place that won&#8217;t be affected by the installation of Windows. This eliminates the hassle of using an external hard disk or re-installing programs. The company uses the analogy of a moving van to load up your computer&#8217;s information, storing it locally until it can be unloaded again on the same PC with a new operating system.</p>
<p>I tested this program using an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows XP. It took me two hours from start to finish, a three-part process of installing the Upgrade Assistant, installing Windows 7, and then re-installing the PCmover program. I followed instructions and the process of upgrading was really quite easy, showing me the programs and files (photos, videos and documents) I had on my old operating system.</p>
<p>Afterward, I did have to dig around on my computer a little bit to make some adjustments, like fixing Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes music program so it opened in Windows 7. And I found it a little annoying that, throughout the process, the Upgrade Assistant tried to get me to buy more software programs, like RegistryBooster and DiskImage, by saying the programs would better prepare my old PC for the switch.</p>

<p>The Upgrade Assistant also works with PCs running Vista. Microsoft offers an in-place upgrade option from Vista to 7, but this mainly works for people transferring from an identical version of Vista to an identical version of 7, like Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium to Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium.</p>
<p>This program won&#8217;t magically fix every upgrade issue you face. If you bought your computer many years ago, it may not be able to run Windows 7 at all, because the hardware may be insufficient. </p>
<p>Another problem is that most netbooks and some laptops don&#8217;t come with built-in disk drives, making it a challenge to install Windows 7, since it comes on a DVD. I had to call around town to find a Radio Shack selling an external DVD disk drive that plugged into my Acer netbook via a USB cord.</p>
<p>Some security software programs, like that from McAfee Inc. (MFE) and Symantec Corp.&#8217;s (SYMC) Norton Antivirus, may not transfer over to Windows 7, though you should be able to manually install them after the migration.</p>
<p>When first installing the Upgrade Assistant, you can choose to do a full migration (files, settings and programs); just move files and settings; move files only; or perform a custom migration. You also can specify which user accounts to include or exclude and you can opt to exclude certain types of files, like temporary files.</p>
<p>After the PCmover program assessed the contents of my PC, it explained that it was packing my content into a &#8220;moving van&#8221;—a file for holding the content—and offered to break the moving van&#8217;s content into smaller parts for people who have storage limitations while transferring.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a little nerve-wracking to think about transferring your computer&#8217;s entire contents over without being able to see where the files are going. At least on an external hard disk, you feel like the files are stored on something tangible and accessible—even if some step in the migration goes terribly wrong and the laptop never starts again, however unlikely. </p>
<p>After installing Windows 7 and then re-installing the PCmover program, I was finished. The next time I turned on the PC, a program called StartUp immediately started to run. This appeared to show me a list of programs that automatically ran on my old operating system but which PCmover disabled from running automatically on Windows 7. A quick step allowed programs that I selected to automatically run again. </p>

<p>One thing to note as you upgrade from Windows XP is that your PC may not be equipped to deliver the full Windows 7 experience. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Beta, Microsoft&#8217;s own tool, analyzes what will and won&#8217;t work properly when the newest version of Windows installs. The Upgrade Advisor warned me that Windows Aero, the name used for some of the gorgeous visuals in Windows 7, wasn&#8217;t capable of working with my netbook&#8217;s graphics adapter. Sure enough, Aero&#8217;s ability to show tiny, pop-up previews of programs that are running in your taskbar as you hover over them didn&#8217;t work. Instead, the names of the files and programs appeared in text-only preview panes.</p>
<p>The downloadable version of the Upgrade Assistant is now $15 for one license to use on one PC—a special pre-release price before Windows 7 is available Oct. 22. After that, the downloadable version will cost $20 from Laplink.com for one license to use on one PC. If you would rather not download this program, it also will be available for purchase in retail stores by the end of October. Of course, you also will have to buy a copy of Windows 7; the version most consumers will want is called Home Premium and it costs $120 as an upgrade.</p>
<p>If you are considering Windows 7 and you are currently using Windows XP on a relatively new PC, a simpler and better-organized migration process is worth the nominal price of Laplink&#8217;s PCmover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant.</p>

<p>But are you using it to your best advantage?</p>
<p>Despite the popularity of Microsoft Outlook, several of its functions aren&#8217;t noticeable unless you dig around in menus or try out keystroke shortcuts. Many of these tricks can be found by reading a user manual, but users would rather be spending their time in Outlook responding to or writing emails. </p>

<p>In last week&#8217;s column I reviewed a program called Postbox, which displays email and its contents in unique ways. In that review I mentioned that Outlook, too, has extra functions, but that these aren&#8217;t always as obvious as they should be. Below, I&#8217;ve compiled a list of what I consider to be some of Outlook&#8217;s lesser-known talents. I focused on Outlook 2007, which many people currently use, and I also included a handful of notes about what Outlook 2010—due out late spring or early summer—will include. With any luck, you&#8217;ll find a few tips here that make your time in Outlook better spent. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Search Me</h5>
<p>Rather than simply entering a word into the Outlook search box, you can help the search engine narrow its results by giving it specific parameters. For example, if I remember that my friend sent an email with &#8220;LSU tickets&#8221; in the subject line, I can type &#8220;subject: LSU&#8221; to pull out all emails about the Louisiana university. Or if I want to find all emails from Molly, I can write, &#8220;from: Molly.&#8221; This works with several other terms including &#8220;to,&#8221; &#8220;sent,&#8221; &#8220;cc&#8221; and &#8220;message size.&#8221;</p>
<p>Search Folders, shown in the folder list with a magnifying glass icon beside them, offer a way of saving the searches you perform most often. If, for example, you often search for flight confirmation emails, you could make a Search Folder called &#8220;Travel&#8221; that would contain a constantly updated list of emails containing the names of airlines. </p>

<p>New folders can be set up by right clicking on the Search Folders icon, selecting New Search Folder and following steps to select a type of folder from one of many pre-set types of folders—such as &#8220;mail sent directly to me,&#8221; &#8220;large mail&#8221; or &#8220;mail flagged for follow up.&#8221; Or you can create a custom Search Folder by telling it to search for certain words that appear within specific message fields.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Color Coding</h5>
<p>To make certain emails stand out in a large list—like emails from your boss or messages addressed only to you—you can set up a rule that makes the email show up in a specific color. Or you can set certain emails to appear in bold font, or in a specific font type and size. Just think of all the emails from your mom that will never go unnoticed again thanks to red type, 14-point font and underlined text.</p>
<p>Setting up the way emails are displayed can be done by going to the Tools menu, selecting Organize, Using Colors and then choosing specific colors for emails from specific people. More advanced automatic settings for applying font type and size to emails can be added by selecting Automatic Formatting in the top right corner of the Using Colors screen. Click &#8220;Add&#8221; to create more rules. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Souped-Up Calendar</h5>
<p>The Outlook Calendar can be organized to look the way you want it rather than the way it&#8217;s set up by default. For example, if you like looking at your day in hourly intervals rather than Outlook&#8217;s default 30-minute blocks, you can right click anywhere you see hours shown and select 60 minutes. Other increments are also available, like five, 10 and 15 minutes. </p>
<p>Outlook can also display other time zones right beside your own time zone by right clicking on the listed meeting hours, selecting Change Time Zone and checking the box labeled Show an Additional Time Zone. This is helpful for people who often work with distant colleagues, saving them from making a mistake and not factoring the right time zone for the other person. A Swap Time Zone button here quickly changes from one set zone to another, which could be a boon for people who regularly travel to different places and want their Outlook settings to reflect that they&#8217;re working from there.</p>
<p>Like color-coded emails, calendar events can be automatically sorted into pre-set categories like Personal, Travel and Family by setting formatting to look for certain words like Tennis (Personal), United (Travel) and Mom, Dad or Allison (Family). Added events that use these words automatically get labeled with a designated color to give your calendar a visual way of distinguishing different types of activities. </p>
<p>Another useful calendar tip: You can hold Control while selecting certain dates on the small view of the calendar and you&#8217;ll see only the schedules for those dates. So if I want to see Sept. 19, 22 and 24, I hold Control while selecting each date to see the three days&#8217; activities displayed in the right viewing panel. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Visual Contacts</h5>
<p>All Contacts in Outlook can be labeled with a photo of the person, which you add by double clicking on the small head icon in someone&#8217;s contact card and then choosing a photo from your collection. People who work in the same company and use Outlook can add their own photo to their contact and it will show up with their emails. </p>
<p>The top right corner of each contact card shows what a person&#8217;s digital business card would look like; this is an image that can be edited and copied using a right click, and then it can be copied and pasted to any email signature. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Looking Ahead</h5>
<p>In Outlook 2010, due out next year, Microsoft (MSFT) says it hopes to streamline work in Outlook, creating smarter rules that do more with less manual work. </p>
<p>One example of this approach is that emails in the next version of Outlook will be, by default, sorted into conversations—a little like Gmail&#8217;s current system. An Ignore button will move all future emails related to the same conversation into the Deleted Items folder. That will include those with changed subject lines because Microsoft uses a special identifier to know which emails are associated with one another. A Clean Up button moves all redundant replies to the Deleted Items folder, leaving just the most recent message in the conversation. </p>
<p>Another feature is Reply with Meeting, a button in Outlook 2010 that will let users create a meeting out of an email. Selecting Reply with Meeting automatically invites those included in the email to attend a meeting. </p>
<p>The title of the meeting is the same as the subject of the email. If the users are in the same corporate network and they all use Outlook Calendar, this tool also looks for the next available time and date on everyone&#8217;s calendar.</p>
<p>Quick Steps, another streamlined feature of Outlook 2010, are one-click shortcuts that simultaneously perform several common actions that people take when handling email. If you select a Quick Step called Reply and Delete, it replies to an email and deletes the original. Users can create their own personalized Quick Steps like one labeled Social that, when selected, marks the email as read, moves it to a special folder and labels it under a certain category.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>On October 22, Microsoft will finally release a new version of Windows that will be as good as the deeply disappointing Windows Vista should have been when it came out in January 2007. The new edition, called Windows 7, is a big improvement over both Vista and the sturdy, 2001-vintage Windows XP still widely in use. It will give Apple’s (AAPL) long-superior Mac OS X operating system a run for its money (though Apple might maintain its edge with a new version, called Snow Leopard, due in September).</p>
<p>But how will Windows users transition their current computers to the new Windows 7? While this latest operating system stresses simplicity, the upgrade process will be anything but simple for the huge base of average consumers still using XP, who likely outnumber Vista users. It will be frustrating, tedious and labor-intensive.</p>

<p>In fact, the process will be so painful that, for many XP users, the easiest solution may be to buy a new PC preloaded with Windows 7, if they can afford such a purchase in these dire economic times. In fact, that’s the option Microsoft (MSFT) recommends for XP users. (Conveniently, this option also helps Microsoft’s partners that make PCs.)</p>
<p>By contrast, if you’re using Vista, the upgrade to Windows 7 should be a fairly easy, straightforward process. Because the new version shares most of the underlying guts of Vista, it installs itself on your current machine relatively quickly and smoothly, preserving all your files, folders, settings and programs. In a test of this process earlier this year, using a pre-release version of Windows 7, I upgraded a Vista laptop with no problems and little effort in about an hour.</p>
<p>But Windows XP users, including the millions who have recently snapped up cheap, XP-powered netbooks, will first have to wipe out everything on their hard disks in order to install Windows 7. on their current machines. In fact, Microsoft doesn’t even call migrating to Windows 7 from XP an “upgrade.” It refers to it as a “clean install,” or a “custom installation.” This disk wipeout can be performed manually, or automatically during the Windows 7 installation process.</p>
<p>If you’re an XP user, the disk-wiping will cause you to lose your current file and folder organization, and all your programs, though not necessarily your personal data files themselves.</p>
<p>However, in order to preserve these personal files, like documents and photos, you will have to undertake a long, multi-step process, typically requiring the use of an external hard disk, to which all these files will have to be temporarily moved and then moved back.</p>
<p>That means you’ll have to buy or borrow an external hard disk, or clean out enough room on one you already own, to hold all your files.</p>
<p>And the pain doesn’t end there. If you’re an XP user, moving to Windows 7 on your current computer means you will also have to re-install all your programs and restore all the software drivers for your printers and other add-on hardware. That could require locating the original program disks, or downloaded program installers, and then re-downloading and re-installing the numerous updates that have been issued since these original disks or installers came out.</p>
<p>And, there’s another problem: XP hardware drivers won’t work in Windows 7. Microsoft says it can automatically replace thousands of common older drivers with newer Windows 7-compatible versions, but admits that there may be some for which it doesn’t have replacements. The company specifically warns that some netbooks may include obsolete drivers.</p>
<p>Netbook owners face another problem. Even though Microsoft says Windows 7 will work fine on netbooks, most of them lack a DVD drive, which is needed to run the Windows 7 installation disk. So they’ll have to buy or borrow an external DVD drive.</p>
<p>Microsoft has taken some steps to make this easier. It plans to offer a free “Easy Transfer” program (explained at <a href="http://bit.ly/M5Il7">http://bit.ly/M5Il7</a>) that will automate the process of moving your personal files to an external drive, and then restoring them to your computer after Windows 7 is installed. But this program won’t transfer your programs, only your personal data.</p>
<p>Also, if you don’t want to use an external hard disk to temporarily store your files, you can transfer them over a cable or network to another computer. The company even has an alternative where it will stow your personal data in a special folder called windows.old, on the transformed PC. But you’ll then have to manually move all of these files back to their normal locations.</p>
<p>Finally, Microsoft officials point out that this XP migration issue may be moot for many owners of older XP computers, because their ancient machines lack enough memory, hard disk space, or graphics power to accommodate Windows 7 anyway.</p>
<p>And, even if a really old machine is marginally capable of running Windows 7, it’s a mistake to try and cram a new OS into it and expect a great experience.</p>
<p>But if you do own an otherwise capable computer that happens to be running Windows XP, you’re likely facing a painful process should you choose to transition it to Windows 7.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For the past week, I&#8217;ve been stalking my sister, my boyfriend and my boss. They&#8217;ve also been stalking me, and we still like one another.</p>
<p>All four of us have been using an application that, once downloaded onto a mobile device, uses location-based technology to track its users&#8217; movements. The app then displays the user&#8217;s location on a map for friends to see, so they can know where the person is at all times.</p>
<p>We used <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=goog'>Google</a> Latitude, a new feature in the search giant&#8217;s Google Maps mobile application as of today. People can get this if they upgrade their current version of Google Maps or install Maps for the first time. It works on Google&#8217;s G1, most color BlackBerrys, most Windows Mobile devices and some other smart phones. Google says it will soon work on the iPhone, iPod touch and Sony Ericsson phones.</p>

<p>Google (GOOG) is arriving late to the party where location-based apps like Loopt (<a href="http://Loopt.com" rel="external">Loopt.com</a>) from Loopt Inc. and Where (<a href="http://where.com" rel="external">where.com</a>) from uLocate Communications are already following people on a variety of mobile devices ranging from basic cellphones to iPhones. These apps rely on GPS satellites, Wi-Fi or cellular towers to locate you and your friends, and then use this data to encourage people to find nearby attractions, local information or social networks.</p>
<p>Latitude is an opt-in-only feature, meaning no one can see your location &#8212; or vice versa &#8212; without permission. It uses either GPS satellites or cell-tower and Wi-Fi location technology depending on your mobile device&#8217;s specifications and what&#8217;s most available in certain spots. My trusted testers and I used Google Latitude on three different kinds of BlackBerrys: the Pearl 8130, Curve 8320 and two Curve 8900s. Of these, only the 8900s made use of GPS.</p>

Location data can update every several minutes when a user is moving.</div>
<p>Along with their locations, friends can share other information on Latitude by updating a status line or changing their picture, which appears as a tiny representative icon on a map. Changes to one&#8217;s status or picture will be reflected in Google Talk, Google&#8217;s instant-messaging tool, but this doesn&#8217;t integrate with other status-related social-networking programs like Facebook or Twitter, and thus may saddle people with another status entry to update.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to find fault in Latitude since it often spots people inaccurately, including showing my sister in Boston&#8217;s Charles River, rather than in a neighborhood along the river. It&#8217;s worth noting that tracking technology in general, including GPS, can be inaccurate. But even with these inaccuracies, my friends and I liked finding one another on our respective maps and used this geographic information to send location-specific messages to each other: I joked with my boyfriend about not leaving his house on time for a dinner and commended my sister on getting up early for church on Sunday.</p>
<p>Usability issues aside, location-based services like Latitude can be just plain creepy, especially when a Big Brother like Google is tracking your whereabouts. So Google incorporated easy-to-change privacy settings so that locations can be automatically detected, manually entered or completely hidden from other people. Or people can sign out of Latitude altogether.</p>
<p>Likewise, users can adjust the level of geographic information they&#8217;re willing to share with each person. For example, I might want to share with my boyfriend my best available location information, like a specific spot on a street, and share only city-level location information with my boss.</p>
<p>The city-level information would be helpful for my parents, who often wish they had a better idea of when I&#8217;m traveling for work and where I&#8217;ll be. But my parents aren&#8217;t likely to download Google Latitude onto their mobile devices anytime soon. For them, a special Latitude widget in iGoogle &#8212; Google&#8217;s personalized home page feature on a PC &#8212; might be best. This widget is also useful for people who may have Latitude on a mobile device but are sitting at their desks and want to see where their friends are.</p>
<p>As expected, Latitude worked differently between me and the people who live in the same area, compared with how it worked between me and people who live hundreds of miles away, like my sister in Boston. For example, my boyfriend and I are more likely to use our respective locations to plan where we&#8217;ll meet for dinner, while my sister&#8217;s current location is just fun to see. Still, my sister and I know one another&#8217;s neighborhoods well enough to have an idea of where the other was, and we felt a little more plugged in with each other&#8217;s lives when we saw one another on our maps.</p>
<p>People who live in urban settings will likely use Latitude differently than those who live in the suburbs. One of my testers noted that it could be fun using Latitude to see where friends are out in a city on any given night. But because Latitude sometimes pegs people&#8217;s locations as a lot farther away than they are &#8212; one test spotted a friend 1.5 miles away from his real location &#8212; this might be tough data to go on.</p>
<p>After using Latitude for a while, I grew to recognize familiar location mistakes like home or work, and knew where my friends actually were. But it&#8217;s unfortunate that locations aren&#8217;t more accurately marked.</p>
<p>Latitude returned the most precise location results when determining where the two GPS-using BlackBerry Curve 8900s were at any given time, though these spots still weren&#8217;t perfect. If a mobile device doesn&#8217;t have GPS or if GPS simply isn&#8217;t available in the area, cellular towers and Wi-Fi will help a determine location. These alternate methods use less battery than GPS, so they will work instead of GPS when Google Maps isn&#8217;t running in the foreground of a device.</p>
<p>Latitude users can opt to allow their location to automatically update every several minutes while they&#8217;re moving. A Friends List that appears with the map lists people in order of who is moving starting with who moved most recently. Users can send text messages or call friends directly from this list, or find nearby spots like bars or movie theaters by typing into a search box; restaurant information includes ratings and reviews. Directions to and from friends&#8217; locations are also available, and you can plan your route via car, mass transit or walking.</p>
<p>Location-based services like Latitude are great for keeping tabs on friends and could even come in handy in other situations &#8212; such as when parents want to know where their kids are or when elderly relatives want to let someone always know their whereabouts. But I wouldn&#8217;t want to depend on them in an emergency.</p>

<p>The latest: An announcement that advertisers who buy AdWords&#8211;Google&#8217;s main revenue engine&#8211;can now automatically buy mobile advertising, too. The company says AdWords buyers can choose to have their AdWords automatically show up on phones that support &#8220;real&#8221; Internet browsers like T-Mobile&#8217;s G1 phone and Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone. Here&#8217;s an example:</p>

<p>These ads will reach a relatively small slice of mobile phone users. But that population will increase rapidly, particularly if <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081208/iphones-at-wal-mart-are-fine-but-steve-draws-the-line-at-qvc-redux/">Apple really does start selling cut-price phones at Wal-Mart </a>(WMT). Which means that Google (GOOG) really may be the first company to make inroads toward the supposedly-huge-but-so-far-mythical mobile ad market.</p>
<p>Release from Google&#8217;s Daniel Rubin:</p>
<blockquote><p>Today, we&#8217;re announcing a new campaign-level option that allows you to extend the reach of your text and image ads to show your AdWords ads on the T-Mobile G1, the iPhone, and other mobile devices that have full (HTML) Internet browsers. This new option will now allow you to display your ads specifically on these devices, create exclusive campaigns for them, and get separate performance reporting. We hope this option will help you more effectively reach your audience with the right message at the right time.</p>
<p>G1 and iPhone ads have many of the same benefits as our standard mobile-format ads, such as allowing you to deliver mobile-specific calls-to-action and reaching your audience when they&#8217;re on the go. Showing ads on the G1 and iPhone also have additional advantages for your advertising. Users are performing a lot of searches on these devices, and searches are likely to go up during the holiday season. Last Christmas, the iPhone drove more traffic to Google.com worldwide than any other mobile platform.</p>
<p>Unlike standard mobile ads, you don&#8217;t need to format your ads for mobile phones to show your ads on the G1 and iPhone. Because the G1 and iPhone has full Internet browsers, you&#8217;ll be able to display your standard AdWords ads and landing pages on these devices without having to modify them.</p>
<p>With this new option, you&#8217;re opted-in to show ads on the G1 and iPhone, and you&#8217;re also eligible to show on additional devices that use full Internet browsers as these devices enter the market. If you want to change your settings to only show ads on G1s and iPhones or to not show ads on these devices, follow these steps.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re running standard mobile ad formats, they won&#8217;t be affected, and they&#8217;ll continue to run on mobile phones with mobile (WAP) browsers.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here are a few questions I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>I want to buy a new ultralight laptop for travel. Few are available with Windows XP, which I would prefer. If I get a Vista machine, will I have compatibility issues with transferring files back and forth between it and my older laptops, both of which have XP operating systems and MS Office 2003?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Your Microsoft (MSFT) Office files, and other standard files, such as photos, songs and PDF documents, should all be compatible with both Vista and XP. While Vista has compatibility problems with some programs and some hardware, in my tests I have never found that Vista caused compatibility problems with standard, common types of files.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I plan to install Windows XP on my Apple (AAPL) iMac using Boot Camp. Whenever I am using the Windows side of the machine, I plan to shut off access to the Internet &#8212; no Web browsing or email. I even intend to unplug my wireless base station. Will this protect me from getting the Windows viruses?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Well, that&#8217;s a drastic plan, but it will probably work, since most viruses and other malicious software are acquired via email or Web sites. However, by cutting yourself off from the Internet, you may make your computer less useful while running Windows. Many programs have Internet components, and those that run locally often download new versions and features over the Internet. Plus, Microsoft distributes updates for Windows and Office using the Internet, including security fixes. For those reasons, it might be more effective to install security software on the Windows portion of your Mac and leave the Internet connection on.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I have a relatively new PC with Windows Vista. Typically, I may have five or six programs running at the same time, sometimes with multiple documents open in each one, and I like to leave my PC this way. However, I&#8217;ve noticed that every few weeks or so, Vista has an annoying tendency to restart my PC when I&#8217;m away from it, and I see a message that &#8220;Your computer was restarted to finish installing updates.&#8221; Is there any way to prevent or minimize this?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Yes. In the settings for Microsoft&#8217;s automatic update service, called Windows Update, the recommended option is to automatically download updates and install them. The second step, installing the updates, can lead to a restart. But you can change the settings to minimize or eliminate the annoyance this causes.</p>
<p>You can choose a specific schedule for installing the updates at a time when you won&#8217;t be interrupted. Or, you can choose an option called &#8220;Download updates but let me choose whether to install them.&#8221; A third option is called &#8220;Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them.&#8221; You could opt out of the update program, but that could leave your PC vulnerable to malicious software.</p>
<p>These options can be found by opening the Windows Security Center, then clicking on &#8220;Windows Update&#8221; at the upper left. Then, in the next window, click on &#8220;Change settings&#8221; in the left column. Similar settings are also available in Windows XP, by opening the Security Center and clicking on &#8220;Manage Security Settings for: Automatic Updates.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most digital cameras have more settings than the average person knows what to do with &#8212; from common adjustments for nighttime and face shots to obscure settings for sports, fireworks and snow scenes.</p>
<p>When the moment comes to take the perfect picture of a snowy mountaintop, Fourth of July fireworks or soccer goal in midkick, most people forget about these features or don&#8217;t know how to use them. And while many digital cameras can now detect faces and make sure they are in focus, they can&#8217;t tell whether that face is smiling or not. The results aren&#8217;t bad, but they could be much better.</p>

<p>This week, I tested three new digital cameras that claim to do the thinking for you. Some digitally analyze the scene you&#8217;re about to capture, automatically choosing the setting that would take the best picture. Others can detect when a subject is smiling so as to automatically know when to snap the photo. One camera even attempts to digitally alter frowning faces into smiles, with amusing results.</p>
<p>I tried out Sony&#8217;s $300 Cyber-shot DSC-W170, Kodak&#8217;s $250 EasyShare Z1085 IS and Olympus&#8217;s $200 FE-340. Only the Sony (SNE) includes all three of the aforementioned features; the Kodak (EK) has scene detection, and the Olympus (OCPNF.PK) camera has built-in smile detection. I found the automatic scene detection offered in the Sony and Kodak cameras to be the most useful feature for everyday photos. It improved my photos and didn&#8217;t require any extra adjustments. I handed the cameras to other people to take pictures, without having to change any settings.</p>
<p>The automatic smile detection offered in the Sony and Olympus cameras was fun to use and could be especially helpful for families whose young kids never seem to smile at the right moment. But it didn&#8217;t work consistently and had trouble detecting my bearded boss&#8217;s smile and even that of a beard-free colleague.</p>
<p>I found Sony&#8217;s frown-fixing tool, which is called Happy Face Retouch, to be rather unusual. It took already captured images of my friends&#8217; faces and turned their frowns or ambivalent looks into smiles, but didn&#8217;t adjust the subjects&#8217; eyes. Though this was good for laughs, the eerie-looking grins pasted on faces reminded me of painted-on clowns&#8217; mouths. And some attempts to retouch a face couldn&#8217;t detect the face to alter it. But a handful of the Happy Face Retouches looked somewhat natural.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Similar Specs</h5>
<p>These cameras boast many similar specifications. All three use 5x optical zoom lenses, and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 and Kodak EasyShare Z1085 IS each have 10.1 and 10 megapixel image sensors while the least expensive Olympus FE-340 has 8 megapixels. The Sony and Olympus both have generous 2.7-inch viewing screens and almost identically sleek builds, though the Sony is the only one of these three cameras to have an optical viewfinder.</p>
<p>The Kodak&#8217;s viewing screen is slightly smaller than the other two digital cameras, measuring 2.5 inches, but its build isn&#8217;t nearly as compact as the others. It reminded me more of small, high-end SLR camera, with its comfortably large hand grip, a settings knob on the top edge of the camera, and a protruding zoom lens.</p>

<p>Kodak&#8217;s EasyShare Z1085 IS takes Secure Digital (SD) memory cards, which are more common than the Memory Stick and xD cards that work in the Sony and Olympus cameras, respectively.</p>
<p>The Kodak and Sony digital cameras have different names for their automatic scene-detection features. By default, the Kodak camera works in Smart Capture Mode, which includes intelligent scene detection, capture control and image processing. I focused on the camera&#8217;s scene detection, which automatically determines whether the photo should be taken in Macro, Text (for shots of text in a book, for example), Face, Landscape or Night settings.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Icon on the Screen</h5>
<p>I snapped pictures around Washington, D.C., noting a tiny icon on the camera&#8217;s screen that indicated which of the five scene modes was being used to capture the photo. A flower icon indicating Macro appeared on my screen when I stooped to get a close-up shot of a tulip, and an icon of a dark sky and stars showed on the screen when I took photos at night. The camera&#8217;s flash, focus and exposure changed according to the type of photo.</p>
<p>The Sony camera uses what it calls Intelligent Scene Recognition to decide which settings should go along with certain photos. Like the Kodak, icons on the Sony&#8217;s screen indicated the scene settings that were automatically deemed appropriate, including Backlight, Backlight Portrait, Twilight, Twilight Portrait and Twilight Using a Tripod.</p>
<p>The Sony&#8217;s Intelligent Scene Recognition isn&#8217;t on by default like Kodak&#8217;s feature. Instead, it must be turned on from within a menu, but once on, it stays on until you turn it off. ISR can be used in either Auto or Advanced mode; Auto takes a single photo with automatically determined settings, while Advanced takes two shots &#8212; one with manual settings you can choose and another shot immediately following the first with automatic settings according to what the camera thinks is best.</p>
<p>I experienced surprising results with the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 and Olympus FE-340 while testing their automatic smile-detecting functions. My friends thought I was joking when I told them the camera would take their picture only if they were smiling. When the flash went off multiple times as they kept smiling, they were intrigued by this feature.</p>
<p>Sony&#8217;s version, which it calls Smile Shutter Mode, is easy to switch into by turning a dial on the camera to a smiley face. Once this setting is chosen and the camera&#8217;s shutter button is pressed, the Cyber-shot will search for smiles in its subjects, and will take photos whenever it detects a smile. Settings within this mode can be set to specifically detect an adult&#8217;s smile or a child&#8217;s smile, and the degree of smile can be set to low, medium or high; I kept things simple by leaving the smile detector on default settings.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Capturing Smiles</h5>
<p>Olympus calls this feature Smile Shot, capturing three rapid shots in a row to make sure everyone&#8217;s smiling. The idea of taking three shots would be extra helpful with an indecisive baby, but most of my friends were able to hold their smiles, which produced three almost exactly identical shots each time someone smiled. Smile Shot is harder to get to in a pinch compared with the Sony: it&#8217;s buried in a list of 13 settings on the Olympus when the camera is set in Scene mode.</p>
<p>The Olympus seemed to be a bit slower than the Sony when it came to detecting smiles, but both had trouble with bearded men and even some folks without beards. And people felt silly standing around with a smile on their faces waiting for the camera to finally work. Closed-mouth, no-teeth smiles were harder for these cameras to detect, but not impossible. In group situations, the Olympus camera will focus on whoever&#8217;s face appears largest, which could mean the person closest to the camera, while the Sony takes a picture whenever anyone in the group smiles.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Putting a Happy Face On</h5>
<p>If someone isn&#8217;t smiling, Sony&#8217;s Happy Face Retouch tool can come in handy, but don&#8217;t count on liking the results. In a group shot of five friends, two people who weren&#8217;t smiling put a bit of a damper on the whole shot. I used Happy Face Retouch, but it picked up on only one of the nonsmiling faces, turning a confused look into a smile that looked passable. But other results weren&#8217;t usable. A serious-looking shot of me deliberately not smiling looked freakishly unnatural after the touch-up, mostly because the rest of my face didn&#8217;t join the smile. I looked more like someone who had received too many Botox treatments.</p>
<p>Sony says that, in group shots, it can detect and change up to eight faces, but in my tests it usually changed only one. This retouching tool is also difficult to find: It took me 16 button presses to change each image into a smile &#8212; or what Sony calls a smile. A few times, Happy Face Retouch couldn&#8217;t identify a face in the photo, even when just one person stood in the frame.</p>
<p>These digital cameras took good photos, overall, and are fun to use because they take pressure off the photographer. I found the automatic scene-detection tools of the Kodak and Sony to be the most realistic and useful offerings, and I&#8217;m sure it won&#8217;t be long before automatic scene detection becomes as commonplace as an automatic flash.</p>
