<p class="mailbox-question"><em>How can I burn a slideshow that I made in iPhoto on my MacBook Pro onto a CD?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>You can export the slideshow as a video (a QuickTime movie in Apple parlance) and then burn that video to your CD.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how: In iPhoto, after you&#8217;ve created the photo slideshow, with titles, music and so forth, click on the &#8220;Export&#8221; button at the bottom of the slideshow-creation window. Choose an option for the resolution of your movie and click &#8220;Export.&#8221; </p>
<p>Then, choose a destination on your hard disk where you&#8217;ll temporarily store the movie. Next, insert the recordable CD, and copy the movie into the window representing the CD. Finally, click on the &#8220;Burn&#8221; button at the upper right of that CD window.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em>I have recently gone almost all Google: I moved my business email to Google, am using Google Docs, etc. I am in need of a new laptop and am considering a Google Chromebook. My question / concern is: What about programs I may need, such as iTunes, or some printer / scanner software, or an accounting suite? Will there be room for some of these programs and if so, will they operate on Chrome OS?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s Chromebook doesn&#8217;t run traditional programs. It is designed to only run so-called Web apps—app-like Web sites, from Google and others, that operate inside the Chrome browser. Also, it has very little local storage and depends on the Cloud—remote Internet servers—for most storage of apps and data. So, the bad news is you can&#8217;t install iTunes or your favorite Windows or Mac accounting suite on a Chromebook. </p>
<p>The good news is Google and others are churning out more and more Web apps for Chromebooks. For instance, there are a variety of music and accounting apps that might meet your needs. You can check these out at <a href="http://chrome.google.com/webstore">chrome.google.com/webstore</a>.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em>I recently switched from BlackBerry to an Android-based phone. Do I need to install any anti-virus or firewall apps on an Android smartphone like what we do on a PC?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>It all depends on your tolerance for risk, your tolerance for running security software, how adventurous you are at downloading apps—and who you believe. Various reports have claimed that Android malware is surging, but last week Google disclosed a fairly new technology called &#8220;bouncer&#8221; that it has been using internally to weed out harmful apps. And the company claims there has been a big drop in malware in its app market in recent months. </p>
<p>My recommendation would be that if you are a safety-first person, or someone who experiments with lots of apps from companies you don&#8217;t know, you should consider using security software on Android.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When Scott Thompson <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120104/confirmed-yahoo-names-paypal-head-scott-thompson-as-new-head/">announced he was stepping down</a> as president of PayPal to become CEO of Yahoo, the company was shocked.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-168801" title="A pin code is used to confirm the transaction." src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/IMG_5666-380x253.jpg" alt="" width="380" height="253" />But a month later, both PayPal and its parent company eBay say they have the depth of leadership necessary to execute its plan to enter the world of in-store payments.</p>
<p>In an interview, David Marcus, PayPal&#8217;s VP of mobile, made the case for why its mobile payments strategy will prevail in a market surrounded by incumbents like Visa, MasterCard and American Express, as well as new entrants like Google.</p>
<p>On the matter of Thompson&#8217;s departure, he downplayed the role of one executive.</p>
<p>&#8220;The strategy wasn&#8217;t one man&#8217;s thing,&#8221; he argued. &#8220;It was a shock for 24 to 48 hours, but we control our destiny, and it&#8217;s about execution now. So far, so good.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition to speaking to Marcus and several other executives, <strong>AllThingsD</strong> got an exclusive look at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120206/paypal-says-it-is-full-speed-ahead-into-mobile-payments-a-month-after-president-resigns/">the company&#8217;s newly constructed &#8220;Shopping Showcase,&#8221;</a> which will be used to demonstrate to potential partners how it envisions next-generation payments will occur at the register.</p>
<p>From the ground floor of the company&#8217;s San Jose headquarters, it has built several realistic-looking facades, including a hardware store, a grocery store, a clothing store and cafe; users can walk from one experience to the next. I also tried out the experience of making a real purchase at Home Depot, where it is currently being piloted at many San Jose-area stores. <p>To be sure, Thompson&#8217;s departure was abrupt. He gave <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120104/ceo-john-donahoe-talks-about-on-whats-next-for-ebays-paypal-after-scott-thompsons-surprise-exit-to-yahoo/">PayPal only 15 hours’ notice</a> before the planned announcement that January morning by Yahoo.</p>
<p>But the company now maintains that its strategy for the next two years had long since been cemented, making it much easier to absorb the blow.</p>
<p>Over the next few years, PayPal will be trying to take its online relationship with 106 million consumers worldwide into the physical payments world, by extending its digital wallet services to cash registers at grocery stores, hardware stores and other retail locations.</p>
<p>It plans to do this through a series of different technologies, including PIN codes, credit cards and other services.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, other providers are trying to attack the market using near field communication, where users will tap their mobile phone at the register in order to pay.</p>
<p>Google, Visa, MasterCard and a consortium of wireless carriers, including AT&amp;T, Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile, are all working on similar solutions, which will require retailers and consumers to upgrade their point-of-sale technology and mobile phones, respectively.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yes, NFC will be useful, and we&#8217;ll be there, but today we are trying to do more than replace swiping with tapping,&#8221; Marcus said.</p>
<p>He envisions shopping becoming a more fluid experience. Today, you pick out the items you want, place them in your shopping cart and then stand in line at the checkout.</p>
<p>But in the future, he asks, why couldn&#8217;t that change? What if you paid for items in the store&#8217;s aisles, or purchased them online before picking them up in the store?</p>
<p>NFC can be restrictive, because you have to be at a physical location in order to tap a terminal and pay.</p>
<p>The scenarios are possible, given how fast things are already changing.</p>
<p>Last year, PayPal exceeded its own expectations, reaching $4 billion in mobile payment volume. This year, it expects to increase that to $7 billion. One of those purchases last year was a $40,000 backhoe, which someone bought using PayPal on their phone.</p>
<p>&#8220;By the time NFC catches up, we will be in a world that will move away from the point-of-sales terminal,&#8221; he predicts.</p>
<p>As with PayPal&#8217;s traditional business, it expects to make money on fees, also called the interchange rate, which the retailer is responsible for paying. Its goal is not to provide a cheaper solution than the incumbents. Rather, it wants to provide other perks that will help retailers and provide incentive for the retailers to want to work with PayPal.</p>
<p>Such perks could include platforms that will allow the retailers to offer loyalty programs, shopping lists, credit options or coupons.</p>
<p>&#8220;If you add a payment method that adds 30 to 40 percent more volume [in business to the retailer], then the interchange doesn&#8217;t matter,&#8221; Marcus said.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>During a recent visit to PayPal&#8217;s San Jose headquarters, I got an exclusive look at the company&#8217;s brand-new Shopping Showcase.</p>
<p><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/01/IMG_5647-380x253.jpg" alt="" title="The push notification talk you into stopping at nearby coffee bar." width="380" height="253" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-168774" />Completed two weeks ago, the showcase is designed to woo major retailers and other potential partners that may be considering adopting PayPal&#8217;s mobile payments services.</p>
<p>The room includes several realistic-looking facades, including a hardware store, a cafe, a grocery store and a clothing retailer.</p>
<p>In each scenario, it demonstrates how it uses a mix of new technologies, offers and loyalty programs to make it faster and easier to and pay and stay engaged with the retailer.</p>
<p>What you won&#8217;t see is demonstrations of near field communications, which is a technology being used by many of its competitors. (To learn why it is not using NFC, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120206/paypal-says-its-full-speed-ahead-on-mobile-payments-after-president-resigns/?preview=true">read an interview with PayPal&#8217;s VP of Mobile David Marcus, coming later today</a>.)</p>
<p>I also visited Home Depot in San Jose to buy something using my PayPal account. The service is now live at many of the Bay Area hardware stores.</p>
<p>Today, PayPal is one of the leading online payments companies, with 106 million users worldwide; but this year, the eBay-owned company is attempting to move offline, by partnering with retailers like Home Depot and other major chains to be announced later this year.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Making video packages on an iPhone can be cumbersome, especially if you’re used to working with a desktop editing program. The phone’s small screen just doesn’t lend itself to manipulating clips and pics easily.</p>
<p>New York-based Animoto, a five-year-old slideshow service that makes awesome-sauce out of images and video clips, has used some of its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110629/animoto-raises-25m-for-video-slideshow-creation/">$25 million in recent funding</a> to make the mobile editing process a whole lot easier. <img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/AnimotoApp1-198x285.png" alt="" title="AnimotoApp" width="198" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-154971" /></p>
<p>In the newly released mobile version of its Web app, Animoto helps users auto-produce slideshows from the images on their iPhones, adding transitions, effects and theme music to selected pictures from the device&#8217;s camera roll.</p>
<p>The app takes the idea of “nonlinear” one step further, by displaying selected images and theme and music options in tile format on the app’s interface, for one-tap selection. While users can’t select a song from, say, their iTunes or Amazon music accounts, Animoto offers 500 royalty-free music options, and there are five themes &#8212; including holiday and celebration styles &#8212; to choose from. The slideshow is stiched together based on the beat of the chosen music, and it takes about 15 seconds to produce a 30-second video, provided there’s good Wi-Fi and data connectivity on the phone. Then, users can share their videos via email, text message or through Twitter and Facebook.  </p>
<p>One of the biggest drawbacks of the Animoto app is that it only works with still images, not video clips. For basic slideshow videos, this works fine, but lots of consumers would probably like the ability to throw their video clips into the mix.</p>
<p>Animoto CEO Brad Jefferson says the company wanted to focus first on getting the picture-slideshow capabilities of the app right; he pointed out that users can use Animoto’s Web app to make polished packages out of both photos and videos. Animoto charges $5 to $30 a month for extended video projects; videos 30 seconds or less can be created for free on both the Web site and the iPhone app.</p>
<p>The Animoto video-editing app is currently only available for the iPhone; it is not optimized for use on the iPad.</p>
<p>If the Animoto app isn’t what animates you, there are other video apps out there that will help you auto-tune your mobile video-making. <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/story/2011-09-08/VidRhythm-makes-it-easy-to-create-your-own-music-videos/50304436/1">VidRhythm</a>, created by Harmonix, makers of the popular Rock Band videogame franchise, costs $1.99 and includes 20 pre-downloaded songs to help transform everyday videos into music videos. Magisto, which in September <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/parmyolson/2011/09/20/billionaire-li-ka-shing-sinks-5m-into-automatic-video-editor-magisto/">received funding</a> from investor Li Ka-Shing, will launch a video-making app in January at the Consumer Electronics Show; Magisto says its app begins to process users’ video clips as they are capturing them on their smartphones, making the mobile post-production process even faster.</p>
<p>And there’s always Apple’s $4.99 iMovie app for iPhone, but that app requires a little more manual editing on the part of the user.</p>
<p>Jefferson says that Animoto is looking to offer a more personal video-making experience that will set it apart from music-video and mash-up apps. He predicts that an increasing number of Animoto videos will be made on its iPhone app, as consumers become increasingly mobile. Some 800,000 videos were made on the Animoto Web site last month, according to Jefferson, and approximately 15 percent of those were viewed on mobile devices.</p>
<p>Animoto also offers a professional-grade video editing program for $249, which contributes to a significant portion of the company’s revenue.</p>

<p>But some of you are actually sort of interested in looking at ads. And lots of you like things that Apple makes. So: Here&#8217;s <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/iad-gallery/id424733624?mt=8">iAd Gallery</a>, from Steve Jobs and company.</p>
<p>The free app is just what it sounds like&#8211;a highlight reel of ads created using Apple&#8217;s own in-app advertising system. That is, it&#8217;s an ad itself, for iAds.</p>
<p>You could choose to interpret the fact that Apple is rolling this out nearly a year after introducing iAds as an indicator that they haven&#8217;t taken off like a rocket. Or you could just take it at face value and acknowledge that lots of advertisers advertise advertising. Google, for one, runs banner ads promising free AdWords credits. I saw one today.</p>

<p>A few weeks ago, BoomTown sat down in a hipster coffee place in a hipster section of San Francisco to talk to the hipster trio of founders of AirBnB.</p>
<p>Which, if you think about it, is a very hipster name for what is essentially the ability to rent out your apartment, home or wack-a-doo space (such as a shoe-shaped hotel or Frank Sinatra&#8217;s Palm Springs estate).</p>
<p><a href="http://www.airbnb.com">AirBnB</a> is an alternative to other fast-growing similar sites such as VRBO&#8211;Vacation Rentals By Owner, only with more style and niche cool.</p>
<p>But the former Y Combinator start-up is not without its more traditional aspects, such as a recent $7.2 million Series A funding from Greylock Partners.</p>
<p>Also on board, its initial Silicon Valley venture investor, Sequoia Capital, which forked over $600,000 in seed financing last year.</p>
<p>That came after AirBnB&#8217;s first foray for travelers to find inexpensive lodging&#8211;often no more than just a room for events, such as the U.S. Presidential conventions&#8211;turned into a wider and more pricey range of offerings, with 700,000 nights booked so far in 166 countries and 8,000 cities.</p>
<p>AirBnB also includes&#8211;of course&#8211;reputation and social networking elements&#8211;as well as a very slick mobile app with unusually lovely photos&#8211;and also easy booking logistics.</p>
<p>And, because it is also very hip to do so these days, there is a Groupon-like daily deal too. <em>But of course there is!</em></p>
<p>It&#8217;s actually all very well done, an interesting way to find cool places to stay beyond the usual.</p>
<p>Here are its founders&#8211;Joe Gebbia, Nate Blecharczyk, and Brian Chesky&#8211;talking about it all in a video interview, as well as a slideshow of its Top 40 collection of its more unusual properties to rent, such as a plane stuck in a tree in Costa Rica:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Tonight, Yahoo is introducing a new set of search upgrades, moving to focus on boosting its experience for consumers as it ports responsibility for underlying search technology over to Microsoft under its new partnership.</p>
<p>The new features include an innovative, if odd, vertical &#8220;accordion&#8221; tab.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have been actively working on the algorithmic transition of search, which was  completed in August, and we are already releasing new features to the search experience,&#8221; said Shashi Seth, SVP of Yahoo Search and Marketplaces, in an interview with BoomTown today. &#8220;Since we are not actively spending a lot of energy on back-end stuff, we can focus our efforts on new things.&#8221;</p>
<p>Among the new enhancements to Yahoo (YHOO) search: A vertical &#8220;accordion&#8221; paradigm with shortcuts on search results that allow for new kinds of information presentation; &#8220;quick apps,&#8221; beginning with one for Netflix (NFLX) that lets its members add movies to their queue directly from the search results page; slideshows within search from the &#8220;Trending Now&#8221; lists on Yahoo; more immersive and theater-style photo and video search, as well as &#8220;the ability for people to view personally meaningful public Facebook albums from friends,&#8221; when they sign in to Facebook; and a new mobile search experience for Apple (AAPL) iPhone and Google Android smartphones, as well as feature phones, that uses HTML5 technology.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted users to see that things had changed dramatically,&#8221; said Seth. &#8220;Consumer needs for search engines have changed.&#8221;</p>
<p>He said that in testing so far, engagement&#8211;an increasingly important measure for advertisers&#8211;had spiked with the new features, especially in &#8220;taking search from an information need to action at an end.&#8221;</p>
<p>Seth promised a &#8220;huge pipeline of stuff&#8221; to come in search, where the Silicon Valley Internet giant holds the No. 2 position in market share, well behind Google (GOOG) and ahead of the Microsoft (MSFT) Bing service.</p>
<p>Both Google and Microsoft have been adding a series of search upgrades over the last year, such as Google Instant, while Yahoo has not.</p>

<p>Spanfeller Media Group, which plans to launch a series of new sites, is close to finishing a funding round that I&#8217;m told will total around $2 million. Backers include RRE Ventures, Greenhill SAVP, SoftBank and Lerer Media Ventures.</p>
<p>Once the deal is done, sources say, Spanfeller&#8217;s plan is to roll out a series of industry-specific &#8220;verticals.&#8221; First up: Food.</p>
<p>Aren&#8217;t there plenty of food sites out there already? You&#8217;d think so, but Spanfeller and his backers figure there&#8217;s room for more. After that, they have a list of categories to tackle, with the exception of five they think are overpopulated: News, business/finance, entertainment, traditional sports and technology. Spanfeller declined to comment.</p>
<p>When <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090715/forbescom-ceo-jim-spanfeller-out-heres-the-internal-memo/">Spanfeller left Forbes last summer</a> after eight-plus years at the site, his initial plan was to create a sort of repair shop for established publishers&#8217; Web properties. That made sense, given that that&#8217;s essentially what he did for the Forbes family when he took over their Web site in 2001. But the new plan is to create stuff from scratch.</p>
<p>Within the Web publishing industry, Spanfeller gets lots of credit for moving Forbes.com from also-ran status into one of the biggest finance sites on the Web. And he gets a fair amount of derision as well, for both a blustery style and a lusty embrace of page views. His most infamous gambit, used more than once: A slideshow detailing the world&#8217;s <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2003/01/30/cx_cv_0130feat1.html">&#8220;Top</a> <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2005/01/13/cx_cv_0113feat.html">Topless</a> <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2006/01/12/topless-beaches-resorts-cx_sb_0113feat_ls.html">Beaches.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>But the collapse of the last tech bubble and the realization the Web publishing economics require lots and lots and lots of scale have brought many other Web publishers much closer to Spanfeller&#8217;s tactics than they&#8217;d like to admit. His new challenge: Re-creating that scale with brand new properties.</p>

<p>Well, it took Microsoft long enough to update the features of Hotmail, which the company is announcing this week.</p>
<p>Some new doodads include better filtering, more social integration, lots of multimedia content, such as photo slideshows and&#8211;perhaps most importantly&#8211;the ability to use Microsoft Office software documents like PowerPoint within the online email service.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a wonder it took so long for Microsoft (MSFT) to upgrade and innovate&#8211;Dear Windows Live Hotmail team, conversation views in email is not new to anyone <em>but</em> you&#8211;the service, although it remains No. 2 after Yahoo (YHOO) Mail. Google (GOOG) Gmail is third.</p>
<p>Microsoft, which <a href="http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_live/b/windowslive/archive/2010/05/18/re-inventing-windows-live-hotmail-the-next-generation-of-personal-email.aspx">blogged about the changes here</a>, has called the whole shebang  of releases in its Window Live services &#8220;Wave 4.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wave 3, <em>um</em>, was in 2008.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s the latest evidence, via <a href="http://searchengineland.com/google-promoting-internet-stats-site-41837?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+searchengineland+%28Search+Engine+Land%29">Search Engine Land</a>: An <a href="http://www.google.co.uk/intl/en/landing/internetstats/">&#8220;Internet stats&#8221;</a> page, distributed via the search giant&#8217;s U.K. arm.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s the point? Google (GOOG) says it will help those looking for &#8220;killer stats for a presentation or maybe just looking to keep abreast of key trends in the digital space.&#8221;</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s easy to tell what Google is <em>really</em> up to: This is perfect fodder for content farmers, or <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/AOL-Wants-To-Hire-More-siliconalley-815263190.html?x=0&amp;.v=4">&#8220;content object makers,&#8221;</a> casting about for data points to fill up slideshows. And if those slideshows are stuffed with AdSense units, everyone makes (some) money. A virtuous cycle!</p>
<p>True, many of the stats are U.K.-specific, and it&#8217;s hard to establish the truthiness level for any given data point. But whatever. People love stats. And many of them are sort of useful, in a hard-to-define way. For instance: Did you know the average Android user who watches YouTube sees 10 clips a day?</p>

<p>A lot of changes in interfaces and some tricky techniques at the three main search engines&#8211;Google, Yahoo and Microsoft&#8211;gave only a fuzzy picture of the market share numbers for April.</p>
<p>While Google (GOOG) sharpened its look with a handsome new interface, Microsoft (MSFT) and Yahoo (YHOO) beefed up their search offerings with content, including some traffic-generating slideshows.</p>
<p>As a result, comparisons are harder, so overall, Wall Street analysts seem to think it&#8217;s a wash for all until new data on real search growth tied to real revenue in the months ahead come in from comScore (SCOR).</p>
<p>For example, without taking into account the changes, Google share was down to 64.4 percent in April from 65.1 percent in March, but it gained slightly when adjustments were excluded.</p>
<p>Yahoo was up, unadjusted, to 17.7 percent from 16.9 percent, but down slightly if adjusted. Microsoft was the same&#8211;up to 11.8 percent from 11.7 percent, but down if adjusted.</p>
<p>A Yahoo spokeswoman said in a statement on the report:</p>
<p>&#8220;We continue to invest in our search experience with innovations that help people easily find information, which in turn drives greater engagement. Increases of Yahoo!’s search share last month stemming from related searches we display in properties like Yahoo! News, are simply bringing Yahoo! to parity with the way that comScore counts searches across other Internet companies. Including these searches improves the accuracy of reported market share across the industry in April. As always, we encourage you to focus on long-term trends in third-party data rather than short-term swings.&#8221;</p>

<p>Google beat Wall Street expectations in its first-quarter earnings, signaling that online advertising spending is back on track.</p>
<p>The search giant said net revenue&#8211;which excludes traffic-acquisition costs paid to partners&#8211;rose to $5.06 billion. Earnings per share rose in the first quarter of 2010 to $6.76, compared with $5.16 in the first quarter of 2009.</p>
<p>Net income climbed to $1.96 billion, or $6.06 a share, from $1.42 billion, or $4.49 a share in the same period last year, which was a 38 percent increase. Wall Street was expecting it to rise 30 percent.</p>
<p>It was a solid quarter for Google (GOOG), although not a barn burner, because investors expected it to do better than consensus.</p>
<p>Thus, Google&#8217;s stock price was down in after-hours trading about 3.5 percent to $575.84.</p>
<p>Encouragingly, paid clicks were up 15 percent, while revenue per click grew seven percent.</p>
<p>And as usual, Google was a money gusher, with $27 billion now in the kitty, giving the company the ability to buy whatever it likes.</p>
<p>&#8220;Google performed very well in the first quarter, with 23 percent year over year revenue growth driven by strength across all major verticals and geographies,&#8221; said Patrick Pichette, CFO of Google, in a statement. &#8220;Going forward, we remain committed to heavy investment in innovation&#8211;both to spur future growth in our core and emerging businesses as well as to help build the future of the open web.&#8221;</p>

<p>Google execs, well known for saying little, are unlikely to say much about the following: Its fight with China, its fight with Apple (AAPL) in the smartphone arena and more, and its possible fight with regulators over the mobile ad market related to its AdMob acquisition.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Touch screens are now prevalent enough on mobile devices that I find myself touching the screens of every new gadget I see. My trusty index finger of a stylus is ready at all times to swipe, pinch, double tap and scroll since these are natural gestures. </p>

<p>Yet touch screens have some downsides. Finger gestures leave smudge marks on the glass screens and monopolize screen real estate, making it hard to show the screen to someone  while navigating. Also, touch screens often require two hands.</p>
<p>This week, I tested a smart phone with a solution for two of the three touch-screen problems. The Motorola Backflip (<a href="http://3.ly/Ku9">http://3.ly/Ku9</a>), which became available March 7, lets people navigate its screen by touching a panel behind it, thus keeping fingers off of the screen. This trackpad-like panel is appropriately named the Backtrack and works like magic: On-screen objects are selected, text scrolls and screens open, but you can&#8217;t see the fingers manipulating the screen because they&#8217;re hidden behind it. </p>
<p>The Backflip, which runs on AT&#038;T&#8217;s (T) 3G network, costs $100 after a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year agreement. Its name comes from its design: The Backflip&#8217;s screen seems to flip backward when the QWERTY keyboard flips down for use. In the device&#8217;s &#8220;closed&#8221; position, the keyboard flips back up and is automatically turned off. </p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been using the Motorola Backflip for emailing, Web browsing, social networking, taking photos and making phone calls. While I applaud its creative design and the idea of the Backtrack, I think it sacrifices functionality for form. Take, for example, its QWERTY keyboard, which has a subtly handsome design when the Backflip is closed. But when used for typing, its shallow keys don&#8217;t give much tactile feedback and are tough to use. Likewise, the Backtrack is clever, but only works when the phone is the flat, opened position, forcing people to reach around both the keyboard and the screen to use it. I often found myself giving up and just touching the screen directly, which also works.</p>
<p>Other companies&#8217; mobile devices have found ways around actually touching their touch screens, silly as it may sound. Palm&#8217;s (PALM) Pre and Pixi models use a gesture area beneath the screen to navigate—with just one hand holding and swiping.</p>

<p>I easily set up two email accounts and Twitter and Facebook accounts on my Backflip. There are also shortcuts for setting up accounts for Picasa, Photobucket, Bebo, LastFM and MySpace. </p>
<p>The Motorola Backflip runs Motoblur, the company&#8217;s social-network and message-consolidating software, which I found to be an attractive interface with intelligent capabilities. For instance, if it senses you&#8217;re checking it a lot, it will update the displayed messages more frequently. Motoblur also uses images from contacts, like their Facebook or Twitter photo, and displays these as small background icons behind Motoblur messages from that person. This is a small detail, but it brings an extra spark of life to everyday messages. </p>
<p>But Motoblur lacks one of the most popular Twitter functions: the ability to re-tweet, or re-message someone else&#8217;s tweet (Twitter status). A Motorola (MOT) representative said re-tweet is under evaluation, but won&#8217;t disclose details about timing. Motoblur has been available for six months, first seen in the Motorola CLIQ.</p>
<p>Oddly, the Backflip runs the Android 1.5 operating system, not the newest Android 2.1. A Motorola representative said the company plans to update this but wouldn&#8217;t say when. It seems strange for a brand-new device not to run the newest operating system.</p>
<p>Phone calls were clear and loud, and photos captured on the five-megapixel, flash, digital zoom camera looked great. I enjoyed using the Backflip&#8217;s bright, 3.1-inch screen with 320&#215;480 pixel resolution. Though I wasn&#8217;t crazy about typing on its keyboard, I did like the keyboard shortcut keys for the Web browser, home, email and search. With the Backflip in its opened position, I used the Backtrack—the trackpad behind the screen—to skip around from one thing to the next. Double tapping on anything selected it, and I swiped my fingers down on the Backtrack to scroll a long news story on the browser. </p>
<p>The Backflip is designed so that whenever it&#8217;s plugged into its wall charger or set at a 90-degree angle, it goes into Tabletop mode, showing a large digital clock with the local weather, date and options for setting an alarm. This mode also offers a button for watching the device&#8217;s photos in a slow-panning, Ken Burns-like slideshow, which is useful for sharing with friends.</p>
<p>Monthly AT&#038;T plans that work with the Backflip include a combination of the carrier&#8217;s required $30 unlimited data plan and a $40, $60 or $70 voice plan. It comes with a 2-gigabyte memory card, though it will work with one that holds up to 32 gigabytes. Its internal memory is 512 megabytes, and the memory available for apps is 220 megabytes, though certain apps can offload some data they use onto the roomier card.</p>
<p>Motorola deserves credit for trying an innovative design and for offering a unique way of moving fingers off of the touch screen. But the Backflip device seems unfinished because of several features that don&#8217;t work as well as they should. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>How did New York Times investors respond to the news that <a href="http://nymag.com/news/media/64305/index2.html">Rupert Murdoch and News Corp. (NWS) will spend $15 million taking on the paper</a> in its own hometown? They <em>love</em> it!</p>
<p>How else to explain a weird spike in New York Times (NYT) shares?</p>
<p>Sometime after noon today, traders started bidding the stock way up, from $11 to $12, though it&#8217;s now dropping back down again. As I write this, shares are moving down to the $11.60 range, which is still a jump of six percent, without any obvious reason.</p>
<p>Unless you count the news today that the paper is printing international editions in Bosnia and El Salvador <a href="http://phx.corporate-ir.net/phoenix.zhtml?c=105317&amp;p=irol-pressArticle&amp;ID=1396987&amp;highlight=">(really)</a>.</p>

<p>Briefing.com (via <a href="http://blogs.barrons.com/stockstowatchtoday/2010/03/01/nyt-pops-5-carlos-slim-interested/?mod=yahoobarrons">Barrons</a>) posits that the spike is based a supposed rumor that <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090117/can-mexican-billionaire-carlos-slim-save-the-new-york-times/">Carlos Slim</a>, the billionaire who made a high-interest loan to the paper last year, now wants to buy the whole thing.</p>
<p>But if something that nonsensical can move the market, why stop there? Why not suggest, for instance, that investors were tickled pink about the new photo slideshow tool the Times is showing off on its front page? (It really is pretty cool. You should check it out.)</p>
<p>Oh, for the record, the Times has nothing to say about this. Per spokeswoman Diane McNulty: &#8220;It’s not our practice to comment on Internet rumors.&#8221;</p>
<p>Meanwhile, as <a href="http://twitter.com/AdamIss/statuses/9838172340">Adam Isserlis</a> at Rubenstein Communications notes, the Times isn&#8217;t the only newspaper stock popping today: E. W. Scripps (SSP) is <a href="http://www.google.com/finance?client=ob&amp;q=NYSE:SSP">up more than 12 percent in a flat market</a>. No discernible reason for that rise, either. Oh, and <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&amp;s=GCI">Gannett</a> (GCI) and <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q?d=t&amp;s=MEG">Media General</a> (MEG) are up too.</p>

<p>Earlier this morning, AOL (AOL) reported its fourth-quarter results, which beat very, very low Wall Street expectations.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100203/tim-armstrongs-aol-beats-wall-streets-low-expectations/">MediaMemo reported</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>After factoring out one-time charges, AOL posted earnings of 71 cents per share on revenue of $810 million. Wall Street expected earnings of either 62 cents or 66 cents per share, depending on who you ask, on revenue of around $766 million.</p>
<p>And while advertising revenue was lousy, it wasn’t as bad as Wall Street had expected&#8211;it dropped eight percent, and analysts had assumed it would show a double-digit decline. Subscription revenue, which still drives the company, though, dropped more quickly than analysts assumed, down 28 percent.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>5:39 am PT:</strong> I jumped on the call a few minutes late, since AOL&#8217;s fancy system for listening to the call using a Webcast would not play in Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Safari browser. Or else I am an idiot.</p>
<p>In any case, Firefox worked and we pressed on!</p>
<p>When I finally got on the call, it was perfect timing, since CFO Arthur Minson was delivering the results in a deeply glum manner, but with a very nice New York accent. It could have also been a Boston accent.</p>
<p>It was definitely a glum accent! &#8220;To be clear,&#8221; said Minson, AOL&#8217;s model &#8220;was not working.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, it was nice to hear the obvious!</p>
<p>Minson continued to smack AOL around for quite a bit, which is a good strategy&#8211;to drop expectations in order to raise the company&#8217;s prospects with Wall Street later.</p>

<p>But the team led by CEO Tim Armstrong was on it! It has cut employees and other costs! It has decided to dump businesses that aren&#8217;t working! It has even cutting coupons, metaphorically speaking! This was serious beeswax, people!</p>
<p><strong>5:52 am:</strong> Armstrong came back to answer questions from the analysts gathered.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s all about the content and how it will bring in the audience to sell advertising to.</p>
<p>The next question: Others have tried this niche content strategy and failed. Why was Armstrong different? Also, can AOL control its search destiny?</p>
<p>Armstrong begged to differ on calling AOL&#8217;s content strategies &#8220;niche.&#8221; Engadget is HUGE!</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a scale that&#8230;advertisers find very attractive,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It works for consumers, it works for advertisers.&#8221;</p>
<p>As to search engine ranking? Search is not the only game in town, said the man who made his fortune as an exec at search giant Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>There are other fish in the sea, said Armstrong, such as Facebook and Twitter. &#8220;Our strategy on distribution is not relying on search,&#8221; he added. &#8220;Fragmentation is our friend.&#8221;</p>
<p>The next question: How&#8217;s AOL on display advertising compared with others?</p>
<p>What else was he going to say? Great, natch! Lots of low-hanging fruit (whatever that means!).</p>

<p>&#8220;Advertisers tend to vote where momentum is,&#8221; said Armstrong. &#8220;AOL is the company people are used to kicking around.&#8221;</p>
<p>No longer! The 98-pound weakling is now 99 pounds!</p>
<p><strong>6:08 am:</strong> Another question on how AOL is improving itself. No more obsession with page views! No more tricks, like too many slideshows.</p>
<p>&#8220;As a net takeaway, the company is getting healthier, although you may see bumps,&#8221; said Armstrong.</p>
<p>It sounds painful!</p>
<p>More questions about fixing what&#8217;s broke.</p>
<p>And then, finally, a different one on what AOL is going to do around products and what it is planning on acquiring to help it do so, as well as what&#8217;s up with its search deal, which is up for renewal soon.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re bringing product mentality back into the company,&#8221; said Armstrong, continuing to bash the previous administration about its overspending and lack of innovation.</p>

<p>Apparently, AOL is also done with &#8220;Hail Mary&#8221; acquisitions.</p>
<p>As to the search deal, Armstrong said AOL likes Google, but it is not making any commitments!</p>
<p>Also: &#8220;If you&#8217;re looking at this deal to squeeze out extra pennies,&#8221; look elsewhere, said Armstrong, who uses the word &#8220;partner,&#8221; which could also translate to &#8220;Microsoft&#8221; (MSFT).</p>
<p>What about making capital expenditures? We&#8217;re comfortable, said Minson. And no more short-term thinking!</p>
<p>More bashing of the past, which was getting a little tiresome.</p>
<p><strong>6:22 am:</strong> What about divestitures?</p>
<p>Minson noted that he could not comment, but took a long time doing so.</p>
<p>A question about brand advertising and whether it is in good shape.</p>
<p>Yes, said Armstrong, but what else was he going to say <em>again</em>, since AOL sells brand advertising?</p>
<p>Last question: What is the key driver of margins at AOL going forward? As in: What the <em>heck</em> is going to get this baby humming and not sputtering?</p>
<p>&#8220;I think it comes down to user engagement,&#8221; said Armstrong about brand advertising.</p>
<p>To wrap up, after a decade of quiet, concluded Armstrong, who also underscored that the management team is more interested in execution than pleasing investors: &#8220;We&#8217;re live.&#8221;</p>
<p>Apparently, reports of AOL&#8217;s death are greatly exaggerated.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> I got to chat with Armstrong for a bit after the call and he reiterated his essential talking points, including the need for execution, the importance of running AOL for the long term, and how he thinks Wall Street has patience for the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;AOL had a premise of making decisions for next week,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We are now stringently focused on the user.&#8221;</p>
<p>Obviously, Armstrong added, there will be focus on expanding AOL&#8217;s ad business. &#8220;That expansion is strong and continuing,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But there were no in-place strictures he called &#8220;guardrails.&#8221; And anything not in the guardrails? Off the road!</p>
<p>As to investor patience? &#8220;My guess is that we have multiple years,&#8221; said Armstrong.</p>

<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p><strong>9:13 am PT:</strong> Quite a scene here this morning; the queue for media credentials is nearly as long as some of the iPhone 3G launch lines I saw a few years back. Moments ago, an Apple PR rep slipped through the doors of the Yerba Buena Center to ask that the press waiting outside take two big steps back. The last time that happened to me, I was at a Jesus Lizard show.</p>

<p><strong>9:54 am:</strong> The doors open and the press enters the event hall. Initially, at least, the scene is pretty crazy. &#8220;This is like the subway in New York,&#8221; an attendee behind me jokes. More like the subway in Tokyo, I think to myself.</p>
<p>A Bob Dylan soundtrack plays as media and guests file in. It&#8217;s momentarily interrupted by a &#8220;please take your seats, our event is about to begin&#8221; announcement.</p>
<p><strong>10:00 am:</strong> Interesting stage set-up today: Instead of an empty stage or a simple table, there are a black leather chair and side-table. Lights are dimming&#8230;.</p>
<p>And Steve Jobs takes the stage to a standing ovation.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a truly magical product, but first a few updates&#8230;.A few weeks ago we sold our 250 millionth iPod&#8230;I didn&#8217;t want to let that moment pass without recognizing it.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:05 am:</strong> Jobs offers a quick overview of Apple&#8217;s retail operations and some of the new stores it has opened recently before moving on to the iTunes App Store. &#8220;A few weeks ago we announced that three billion applications had been downloaded from the App Store&#8211;that&#8217;s in 18 months&#8230;amazing.&#8221;<br />
He notes, as he did in the company&#8217;s earnings release the other day, that Apple is now a $50 billion company.</p>
<p>Apple is a mobile devices company, says Jobs, &#8220;the largest mobile devices company in the world now. Larger than Sony&#8217;s mobile device business, larger than Samsung&#8217;s and, astonishingly, Nokia&#8217;s as well.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:07 am:</strong> A quick historical overview now. Jobs touches on the first PowerBook, introduced in 1991. He moves on to the MacBook and then the iPhone.</p>

<p>&#8220;All of us use laptops and smartphones, now. And the question has arisen lately: Is there room for a device in the middle?&#8230;We&#8217;ve pondered this question as well.&#8221;</p>
<p>This &#8220;middle&#8221; device, says Jobs, must be better at doing certain tasks than either the laptop or smartphone. If there&#8217;s going to be a third-device category, it must be better at browsing the Web, video, photos, music, etc.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some folks say this device is a netbook&#8230;. The problem is, netbooks aren&#8217;t better at anything.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am:</strong> But we have something that is, says Jobs, &#8220;and it&#8217;s called the iPad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Photos of the device appear on the giant screens. Very thin. Very slick. &#8220;IPad offers the best Web browsing experience there is&#8211;way better than laptops.&#8221; There is no camera  that I can see. That&#8217;s not going to go over well with folks hoping for a device that supports video iChat.</p>
<p><strong>10:13 am:</strong> Further details: The &#8220;iPad is a dream to type on,&#8221; Jobs says, pointing out its life-sized onscreen keyboard. It&#8217;s also an awesome way to enjoy media. iTunes, iTunes University and YouTube HD support are built in.</p>
<p><strong>10:14 am:</strong> Jobs sits down to demo the device: &#8220;Using this thing is remarkable. It&#8217;s so much more intimate and capable than the laptop.&#8221; He loads Safari and surfs over to the New York Times (NYT). The iPad loads quickly and Jobs is able to easily navigate the page, loading stories and zooming in on articles.</p>
<p><strong>10:15 am:</strong> Demonstrating landscape and portrait now. &#8220;This device adapts to the way I want to use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Definitely an impressive browsing experience. Fast and elegant.</p>
<p>Now, an overview of Mail. Also elegant. Nice split-screen presentation. Hit compose, and a nice onscreen keyboard pops up. Jobs types out a message to his colleagues at Apple. Seems relatively easy.</p>
<p><strong>10:19 am:</strong> Moving on to iPad&#8217;s photo capabilities. It supports iPhoto&#8217;s Events, Faces and Places features.  It also offers built-in slideshows complete with soundtracks and transitions.</p>
<p>Running a slideshow demo, Jobs pauses and looks out at the audience with a Chesire Cat-wide grin. He&#8217;s clearly relishing this moment.</p>

<p><strong>10:22 am:</strong>: The iTunes experience on iPad is much as you would expect. Similar, if not identical, to what the software currently offers. Calendar and Contacts apps are also nice and, again, similar to what you&#8217;d find on a MacBook or iPhone.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am:</strong> Demoing Google Maps now. The iPad supports Google Street View and the implementation is very slick.</p>
<p><strong>10:25 am:</strong> Moving on to video. Jobs calls up an HD clip from Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube and displays it in both portrait and landscape. That finished, he fires up iTunes and loads &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; to demo the device&#8217;s video features, scrubbing, etc. Then he shows us a clip from Pixar&#8217;s &#8220;Up.&#8221; Tap to go full-screen. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t that wonderful?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:27 am:</strong> Watching that is nothing like actually having one in your hands, says Jobs.</p>
<ul>
<li>iPad is one-half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds, and comes with 9.7 inch IPS display&#8211;&#8220;very high-quality display&#8221;</li>
<li>Full capacitive multitouch</li>
<li>16GB-64GB flash storage</li>
<li>iPad is powered by our Apple&#8217;s custom silicon&#8211;&#8220;We did it inhouse and it just screams,&#8221; says Jobs.</li>
<li>Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, compass.</li>
<li>Battery life: 10 hours.</li>
</ul>
<p>&#8220;And in addition to 10 hours of battery life, iPad offers a full month of standby time,&#8221; Jobs notes. &#8220;It&#8217;s also a good environmental citizen,&#8221; he adds, noting that it&#8217;s a very green device.</p>
<p><strong>10:31 am:</strong>  Jobs invites Scott Forestall to the stage to talk about apps on the device.</p>
<p>&#8220;We built the iPad to run virtually every app in the App Store right out of the box,&#8221; Forestall says.</p>
<p>Evidently, a built-in pixel-doubling feature automatically scales iPhone apps to full-screen iPad apps.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am:</strong> Forestall runs an unmodified racing game from the App Store. He first demos it in the screen size of an iPhone. Then, using the pixel-doubling feature, he blows it out to full screen. Very slick.</p>
<p>&#8220;So you can buy the iPad, take it home, hook it up and download all your iPhone apps and run them with no problem at all,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Forestall announces a new iPhone software development kit specifically geared to the iPad. He notes that iPad-specific applications will be featured &#8220;front and center&#8221; in the App Store.<br />
He then invites Gameloft&#8217;s Mark Hickey to the stage to demo some new games the company has developed using the new SDK.</p>
<p>Hickey notes that the iPad&#8217;s additional screen space is a boon for developers, particularly those building games. He demos a first-person shooter that showcases this. &#8220;We&#8217;re now able to interact with the game world in ways that we weren&#8217;t able to before.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: Next up, the New York Times. Martin Nisenholtz takes the stage to talk about its iPad effort.</p>
<p>After talking up the Times iPhone app, Nisenholtz segues to the the paper&#8217;s new iPad app: &#8220;We think we&#8217;ve captured the experience and essence of reading the newspaper.&#8221;</p>
<p>The app is largely what you&#8217;d expect. Tap to resize text, zoom, breaking news updates, video. &#8220;This is everything you love about the paper and everything you love about the Web.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:44 am:</strong> Now, a painting application called Brushes that was famously used to create a New Yorker cover.<br />
The app is impressive enough on iPhone; it&#8217;s even more so on the iPad. It supports &#8220;playback&#8221; of paintings, and as the presenter notes, brings us one step closer to a real virtual painting studio.</p>

<p><strong>10:46 am:</strong> EA&#8217;s Travis Boatman take&#8217;s the stage. The topic of his presentation: Need For Speed.</p>
<p>&#8220;Building for the iPad is a little bit like holding a high-def TV screen a few inches from your face,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>The iPad version of Need for Speed boasts a number of touch-activated enhancements: Tap on the car to view its interior, tap on the rear-view mirror to look behind you.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am:</strong> Up next: MLB.com&#8217;s Chad Evans. He demos the outfit&#8217;s iPad-optimized app, which uses the device&#8217;s additional screen space to display video excerpts and MLB TV.</p>
<p>MLB TV can be streamed like and enhanced with onscreen stats and data. &#8220;This big display really allows us to create a much more immersive experience,&#8221; Evans says.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am:</strong> Forestall returns to the stage to make another brief plug for the SDK before Jobs takes over for him.<br />
&#8220;Let me show you another one of our apps that we&#8217;re very excited about,&#8221; Jobs says. &#8220;An e-book reader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Behind him a photo of Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle appears. &#8220;Amazon did a great job with their reader and we&#8217;re standing on their shoulders here&#8230;.Today we&#8217;re announcing the iBooks store,&#8221; says Jobs, adding that it will be supported initially by Penguin, Simon &#038; Schuster and a number of other big publishers.</p>
<p>The iBooks Store interface begins with a simple bookshelf view. Tap the screen and it loads a more iTunes-like view. Purchase a book and it&#8217;s added to your bookshelf with a slick little animation.</p>
<p>The reading experience seems very appealing. Much more book-like. From where I sit, the pages look like they&#8217;re written on paper.</p>
<p>&#8220;We use the e-pub format, the most popular open-book format in the world,&#8221; says Jobs. &#8220;We think iPad is going to be a very popular e-reader not just for bestsellers, but for textbooks as well.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am:</strong> And here&#8217;s another new product announcement: A new version of iWork tweaked for use on the iPad. Jobs invites Phil Schiller on stage to demo it.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a completely new version of Keynote, a completely new version of Pages and a completely new version of Numbers&#8211;all optimized for multitouch.</p>

<p>Schiller demos Keynote first. Creating presentations appears intuitive and simple&#8211;a slide navigator on the left, tap to load individual slides in the main window, drag to rearrange.</p>
<p>Nice use of multitouch gestures to enhance the app. Pinch to resize photos, tap to insert animations and transitions. These are all fairly advanced techniques and the device seems to handle them well.</p>
<p><strong>11:05 am:</strong> Moving on to Pages now. Also impressive, though creating a written document on a tablet device like the iPad seems like it might be a drag. A nice tool for editing, though. Simple controls.</p>

<p><strong>11:07 am:</strong> Moving on to Numbers. This application also makes good use of multitouch gestures and boasts a data-entry keyboard along with some 250 built-in functions. The software&#8217;s gesture capabilities makes Excel look antediluvian.<br />
Powerful and <em>fast</em>.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s Apple going to charge for iWork? $9.99 each, says Schiller, who notes that all three applications are compatible with their Mac versions.</p>
<p>Jobs returns to the stage, grinning. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t that great?&#8221; he asks for what&#8217;s easily the 10th time. iPad, he says, will synch to Mac or PC via USB.</p>
<p><strong>11:14 am:</strong> Evidently, there will be two iPad models&#8211;one with Wi-Fi-only and one with Wi-Fi and 3G. The 3G device will come with two plans: 250 MB per month for $14.99, unlimited data for $29.99. </p>
<p>And who&#8217;s the carrier? AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>A small groan ripples through the audience.</p>
<p>Jobs allows that AT&#038;T is also throwing in free Wi-Fi at its hotspots. He follows that up by noting that there are no contracts for the iPad. You can cancel at anytime.</p>

<p>All iPad 3G models are unlocked and they use new GSM micro SIMS, so chances are they will just work, Jobs says, after noting that Apple hasn&#8217;t yet worked out international carrier deals.</p>
<p><strong>11:16 am:</strong> Now a quick overview as a wrap-up. Jobs touts the overall tablet experience along with the new iBook app and iBook Store. &#8220;This is an amazing product with tremendous breadth. What should we charge for it?&#8230;When we set out to develop the iPad we not only had aggressive UI goals, we had aggressive price goals, because we wanted to put this in the hands of as many people as possible&#8230;.IPad pricing starts not at $999, but $499,&#8221; Jobs says to a huge round of applause.</p>

64GB for $699.<br />
Adding 3G requires an additional fee.</p>
<p>Apple will ship Wi-Fi models in 60 days and 3G models in 90.</p>
<p><strong>11:20 am:</strong>  Apple has created new accessories for the iPad: A standard dock and a second dock with a keyboard attached to it. &#8220;Keep one of these in your den and you can write the next &#8220;War and Peace&#8221; on it.&#8221; The final accessory, a new case that doubles as a stand.</p>

<p>Designer Jon Ives on the iPad: &#8220;In many ways iPad defines our vision, our sense of what&#8217;s next.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:32 am:</strong> Jobs returns to the stage and recalls the &#8220;middle device&#8221; scenario he mentioned earlier today. &#8220;Can we create this new category? The bar is set pretty high, but we think we&#8217;ve got the goods.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;The reason the iPad is going to be so great is because Apple has always strived to be at the junction of technology and liberal arts.&#8221;</p>

<p>But the search giant hasn&#8217;t confined its ambitions to mere hardware and software design. It also wants to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100105/verizon-wireless-to-sell-googles-nexus-one/">reinvent the way the mobile business works</a>.</p>
<p>Heady stuff, but then, Google (GOOG) has already reinvented some industries (ask the old search engines) and is helping reorder others (ask any newspaper publisher). </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Google this week is taking two dramatic steps to try to catapult devices using its Android mobile operating system into stronger competition with Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone and Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry in the battle for supremacy in the super-smartphone category.</p>
<p>First, the search giant is bringing out a beautiful, sleek new Android phone, the Nexus One, built to its specifications. Second, it has decided to offer the new phone—and future models—to consumers directly, unlocked, via the Web, and then invite multiple carriers to compete to sell service plans and subsidized versions of the hardware.</p>

<p>One carrier is ready to support the Nexus One on day one: the U.S. arm of T-Mobile, a longstanding Google (GOOG) partner. The new Google Phone, built by HTC of Taiwan, will cost $529 unlocked direct from Google, at google.com/phone. It will cost $179 from T-Mobile online with a two-year contract that will set you back $79.99 a month.</p>
<p>Verizon Wireless (VZ) in the U.S. and Vodafone (VOD) in Europe will sell the Nexus One eventually at subsidized prices that haven&#8217;t yet been announced. All of this will take place on a Google-hosted Web site, a much easier way to buy a phone and service than is typical today, and one that promises to further weaken the power of the carriers.</p>
<p>The company also plans to sell the costlier, unsubsidized version to consumers in the U.K., Hong Kong and Singapore immediately. Like Americans who buy this unlocked version, these customers will have to purchase carrier service separately, something they should be able to obtain right away by just buying and inserting a SIM card from a carrier with compatible technology. (This initial unlocked phone won&#8217;t work with Verizon or Sprint in the U.S., nor on AT&#038;T&#8217;s 3G network, only the latter&#8217;s slower network.) </p>

The Nexus One has a larger screen than Apple&#8217;s phone, and is a bit thinner, narrower and lighter—if a tad longer. And it boasts a better camera and longer talk time between battery charges.</div>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Nexus One for a couple of weeks and I like it a lot. It&#8217;s the best Android phone so far, in my view, and the first I could consider carrying as my everyday hand-held computer. It is a svelte gray device with a 3.7-inch, high-resolution screen; a thin strip of buttons underneath for home, back, menu and search; and a trackball.</p>
<p>The Nexus One finally has the right combination of hardware and software to give Android a champion that might attract more people away from their iconic iPhones and BlackBerrys. It has a larger screen than Apple&#8217;s phone, and is a bit thinner, narrower and lighter—if a tad longer. And it boasts a better camera and longer talk time between battery charges.</p>
<p>Also, because it will be available on the large, well-regarded Verizon 3G network, the Nexus One could tempt American iPhone users, tired of problems with AT&#038;T (T), to switch.</p>
<p>The iPhone still retains some strong advantages. It boasts well over 100,000 third-party apps—around 125,000 by some unofficial estimates—versus around 18,000 for the Android platform. And it has vastly more memory for storing apps, so you can keep many more of them on your phone at any one time. On the Nexus One, only 190 megabytes of its total 4.5 gigabytes of memory is allowed for storing apps. On the $199 iPhone, nearly all of the 16 gigabytes of memory can be used for apps.</p>
<p>In fact, the $199 iPhone 3GS has roughly four times as much user-accessible memory out of the box, though the memory on the Nexus One can be expanded via memory cards. Apple also has a more-fluid user interface, with multitouch gestures for handling photos and Web pages.</p>
<p>As for the BlackBerry, its user interface looks older and clumsier with each passing day, but it has a beautiful physical keyboard many users love, while the Nexus One has a virtual, onscreen keyboard.</p>

<p>The Nexus One is packed with its own tricks. Its version of Android is essentially the same improved edition as the one that appeared on the Motorola (MOT) Droid back in November. But it has a few new features, including an experimental dictation capability. You just press a microphone icon on the keyboard and start talking, and the words appear. In my tests, this worked only adequately at best, and very poorly at worst, but Google insists it will learn and improve.</p>
<p>The phone also has handsome new visual features, including &#8220;live wallpaper,&#8221; with waving grass or pulsing colored lines; and a new zooming effect when you want to view icons that aren&#8217;t on your main screens. In addition, you can now view miniatures of your five main screens to help you navigate to the one you want.</p>
<p>The Nexus One also has all the key software features introduced in the Droid, including free turn-by-turn voice-prompted navigation.</p>
<p>In my tests, overall, the Nexus One worked very well. The latency I had seen in earlier Android phones is gone, due to a slicker version of the operating system and faster chips. The phone feels good in the hand and the screen is magnificent, with much greater resolution than the iPhone&#8217;s. </p>
<p>I like very much the way social-networking information, including status messages, is integrated into the contacts app. One tap on a person&#8217;s picture in Contacts lets you quickly choose whether to call, email or message her, or map her address—all without opening the contact card itself.</p>
<p>I also liked the pictures and videos I was able to take with the five-megapixel camera and flash, which I preferred to my iPhone&#8217;s camera. You can even view a photo slideshow or listen to music when the phone is in the optional desktop dock.</p>
<p>But there are some downsides to the Nexus One. Like all Android phones, it relies too much, in my view, on menus that create extra steps, including some menus that have a built-in &#8220;more&#8221; button to display a secondary menu of choices.</p>
<p>I also found the four buttons etched into the phone&#8217;s bottom panel sticky and hard to press. In addition, although the Nexus One claims seven hours of talk time versus five hours for the iPhone, most of its battery-life claims for other functions are weaker than Apple&#8217;s. </p>

<p>For instance, Google claims just 6.5 hours of Wi-Fi Web use per charge, versus nine for the iPhone, and 20 for music playback versus 30. Google claims this is because, unlike Apple, it allows the simultaneous use of third-party apps, which can drain the battery faster.</p>
<p>In addition, the Nexus One, and other Android devices, still pale beside the iPhone for playing music, video and games. The apps available for these functions aren&#8217;t nearly as sophisticated as on the Apple devices.</p>
<p>Finally, the iPhone is still a better apps platform. Not only are there more apps, but, in my experience, iPhone apps are generally more polished and come in more varieties. </p>
<p>But, with its fresh phone and bold business model, Google is taking Android to a new level, and that should ramp up the competition in the super-smartphone space.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Since the earliest rumors shivered through the blogosphere, Google has been on a steady march toward releasing its own mobile offering. </p>
<p>If the journey was steady, though, the communication was anything but. Google (GOOG) has shifted its language along the way and even outright denied the smartphone project once or twice. </p>
<p>The Nexus One, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091213/google-pals-up-with-t-mobile-to-push-its-nexus-one-phone">news of which got out a few weeks ago</a>, might not be the innovative free-to-all everyone was fantasizing about, but it represents the most significant mobile announcement from Google to date, using its Android operating system software.</p>
<p>More to the point, Nexus One, the Silicon Valley search giant&#8217;s most aggressive attack on the hegemony of Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone, will <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091229/google-announces-jan-5-android-event/">finally be unveiled today</a> at an event that  will be ably covered by Digital Daily&#8217;s John Paczkowski, starting at about 10 am PT.</p>
<p>But overall, it was a pretty sneaky journey from there to here.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>One of the hottest ideas in the digital world now is the notion of dumping the traditional personal computer, where most programs and data are stored locally, for a stripped-down device that would operate primarily as a gateway to servers on the Internet, where your programs and data are accessed remotely. This approach is often called &#8220;cloud computing.&#8221;</p>

<p>In fact, the original netbooks, the small laptops that have become very popular, were designed around this concept of relying mostly on the Web. They used low-end processors, shunned Windows, and had very little internal storage. But a combination of consumer sentiment and industry maneuvering pushed them back into the fold, so that today, most are simply cheap, small conventional Windows laptops.</p>
<p>Now, a small Boston company, called Litl, is taking another shot at this idea, with a different twist. It is selling online a highly unusual laptop it classifies as a &#8220;webbook,&#8221; which attempts to meld cloud computing with a TV-like viewing experience—for the home. This shiny, colorful computer, named the Litl, is larger and more expensive than a typical netbook. It&#8217;s about the size of a small standard laptop, with a 12-inch screen and a weight of 3.4 pounds. It costs $699, or  about twice the price of a netbook, at <a href="http://litl.com">litl.com</a>.</p>
<p>Yet the Litl doesn&#8217;t use Windows, or directly run word processors, email, or photo or music programs. It can only perform those tasks via Web sites and services like Gmail or Flckr, Google Docs or Pandora Radio. About the only local program it has that can run without an Internet connection is a virtual egg timer. It has no hard disk or any other way for a user to store anything locally. </p>
<p>The Litl&#8217;s user interface is a radical departure. There is no task bar or dock, no folders, no icons for files and programs; no traditional desktop. Instead, the Litl&#8217;s screen is filled with small cards that contain various kinds of Web content, from photos to news headlines, Facebook status and favorite Web sites. Click on a card, and its contents fill the screen. </p>

<p>And the Litl has another big difference from standard laptops or netbooks: something called &#8220;easel mode.&#8221; You can flip it around so the machine takes the form of an inverted letter &#8220;V,&#8221; with the screen facing outward. In that position, the machine can be used like a small Internet-based TV to display headlines, the weather, photo slideshows or videos from the Web. The company sells a $19 remote for controlling the computer in easel mode. You can also control it with a wheel built into the hinge.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been testing the Litl and I have mixed feelings about it. Some of the bold concepts behind the machine are refreshing, including the cloud-computing idea and the very simple interface and operating system, which demand much less work and attention from the user than a traditional PC does. The company also is promising many improvements, delivered via frequent over-the-air updates, including iPhone-type apps developed by third parties. It even offers a two-year money-back guarantee.</p>
<p>I was able to set up cards for Gmail and Yahoo Mail, and to send and receive messages. I also set up a card for Google Docs and was able to create and edit documents. I tapped into my Flickr account and could view slideshows of family photos I had previously uploaded. And I was able to watch TV shows via Hulu, both in easel mode and on my big-screen TV, once I connected the Litl to it.</p>
<p>But, in my tests, I found the device a bit clumsy and unsatisfying to use. For instance, as you add cards for your favorite Web sites or headline feeds (called channels), it becomes more difficult to scroll through screen after screen to find the one you want. There is no easy way to organize things. </p>
<p>In easel mode, when you see a headline that interests you, there is no way to click on it to read the whole story. Videos in easel mode too often stuttered. Worse, if you&#8217;re watching a video in easel mode, or through a TV, the Litl&#8217;s remote doesn&#8217;t let you pause, fast forward or back up. And the Litl doesn&#8217;t allow you to upload photos or videos to the Web.</p>
<p>The battery life is awful. The company claims 2.5 hours. In my tests, it conked out in less time. The company says that isn&#8217;t a problem, because the machine is designed for home use and will likely stay plugged in.</p>
<p>The company claims it is working on improving the Litl&#8217;s shortcomings. For instance, it plans a photo-uploading function and smoother video playback. So, it will likely get better. But, as of now, for $699, my feeling is that a standard laptop could perform many of these tasks in a more familiar, more versatile manner.</p>
<p>Cloud computing may one day be the standard way of doing things digitally, but the Litl, at least in its current form, isn&#8217;t the answer.</p>

<p>Sound good? Then take a gander at the <a href="http://www.fuseproject.com/#blogEntry79">XO-3</a>, a tablet that the people from <a href="http://laptop.org/en/">One Laptop Per Child</a> think they&#8217;d like to have available in 2012.</p>

<p>Since it&#8217;s pretty much purely conceptual at this stage, the details don&#8217;t really matter all that much. But for what it&#8217;s worth, according to Forbes, OLPC says the thing will be thinner than the iPhone, may use components from the likes of Plastic Logic and Pixel Qi and will sell for $75.</p>
<p>The gadget, like OLPC&#8217;s other projects, is aimed at kids in the developing world. But if the tablet ends up looking&#8211;and performing&#8211;anything like the concept stuff, then it&#8217;s not a stretch to imagine that ordinary consumers would want to get their hands on it too, just as they did with OLPC&#8217;s first computer.</p>
<p>Or not. Gizmodo politely suggests that the OLPC guys are about as likely to produce the thing as I am. But then again, the OLPC guys don&#8217;t necessarily think they&#8217;re going to produce it either; they think that if they make the tablet an open-source project, they can spur someone else into actually producing it.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, an update on the tablet everyone is most eager to see: <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703344704574610491399388448.html">The Wall Street Journal</a>, following up on <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091102/apples-itunes-pitch-tv-for-30-a-month/">Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) plan to get into the TV subscription business</a>, says that &#8220;people briefed by&#8221; the company expect its legendary tablet to show up  &#8220;by the end of March.&#8221;</p>

It&#8217;s pretty straightforward logic: If you&#8217;ve got nothing else to do, then you&#8217;re more apt to watch Hulu, play Farmville, whatever.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s a data set that seems to belie that: New statistics from Nielsen that seem to show that people are spending less time on their browsers than they did a year ago.</p>
<p>If you believe Nielsen&#8217;s stats, Web users are heading to their PCs a little less often (sessions per person&#8211;down 11 percent)  and doing less once they get there (domains visited per person&#8211;down 20 percent). Except when it comes to clicking, which they&#8217;re happy to do (Web pages per person&#8211;up 11 percent).</p>
<p>I can understand the boost in Web pages, since many publishers are getting more strident about demanding extra clicks from their visitors, in the form of slideshows and other tricks. Everything else, though, leaves me puzzled.</p>
<p>Note that in addition to the usual salt you want to consume alongside Web-use metrics like these, there&#8217;s a bonus variable here. Nielsen changed its reporting process in last June, which makes year-over-year comparisons even trickier.</p>
<p>But Nielsen says this stuff should at least be directionally correct, so take a look for yourself (click image to enlarge):</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With holiday shopping comes anxiety about getting the right gifts. Does Dad already own a copy of &#8220;Frank Sinatra&#8217;s Greatest Hits&#8221;? Was Mom expecting a new pepper mill, or was that Aunt Carol? It&#8217;s even worse for people shopping for the video gamers in their lives: Understanding the technical specifications of each console can seem as difficult as getting to the highest level in a game of Halo.</p>

<p>This week, I&#8217;ve done the dirty work for you: I&#8217;ve amassed a collection of vital details about the three most popular systems—Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360, Sony&#8217;s (SNE) PlayStation 3 and Nintendo&#8217;s Wii—so that you can get a handle on what each offers and what it will cost you.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Nintendo Wii</h4>
<p>Nintendo recently dropped the Wii&#8217;s price, for the first time, to $200 from $250. The Wii Console comes with a controller, an additional controller called a Nunchuk, and the Wii Sports game, which includes baseball, tennis, golf, bowling and boxing. It holds 512 megabytes of flash memory, but you can increase this by inserting SecureDigital memory cards. It also accepts high-capacity SD cards, or SDHCs, of up to 32 gigabytes.</p>
<p>The couch-potato world of videogamers was shaken up when the Wii, with its motion-sensitive remote control, was introduced about three years ago. Users can play Wii Golf, for instance, by swinging the remote like a golf club. In September, Nintendo added to its lineup a $20 remote-control accessory called Wii MotionPlus that was designed to add more precision to game motions. I tested this snap-on piece and found that it did make the Wii&#8217;s motions feel more realistic. But it works only with Wii MotionPlus games—and there are only six of them; 10 more are planned for 2010.</p>
<p>Wii encourages users to move around in more ways than just waving a remote: Its Wii Balance Board, which comes with the Wii Fit Plus game in a $100 bundle, works like a digital exercise step. It records the body&#8217;s weight shifts and movements for activities from yoga to wake-boarding.</p>
<p>The Wii accesses the Internet and lets users compete online against others. About 655 packaged games are available for between $30 and $50. Also, you can use pre-purchased Nintendo Points to buy and download about 150 WiiWare games and over 325 titles from the older Virtual Console library. Each game costs between 300 and 1,500 points, or between about $3 and $15.</p>
<p>WiiConnect24 can send messages from one Wii to another over the Internet, as long the two users exchange &#8220;Wii numbers.&#8221; Users can also surf the Web with Wii&#8217;s Opera browser. But beyond this, no other Web features—like downloadable movies, social-networking applications or streaming music—will work on this system.</p>
<p>Parental controls can be set on the Wii to restrict kids from using the Web browser, playing games that have a certain rating or communicating online.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Microsoft Xbox 360</h4>
<p>Microsoft recently stepped up its game by adding features to its $200 Xbox 360 that make it well-rounded rather than strictly geared toward serious gamers. People who buy the Xbox LIVE Gold membership, for $50 a year, get applications for Facebook, Twitter, the Last.fm music-streaming service, online multiplayer game play, video chat, Netflix (Netflix subscription required), photo sharing via the Xbox, and movie or photo &#8220;parties&#8221; that allow users to watch a movie simultaneously with seven other friends.</p>
<p>Xbox LIVE Silver membership is free and includes basic features like voice and text chat, as well as access to the Zune video library&#8217;s 20,000 TV shows and movies to buy or rent. The Xbox also allows media-streaming over a home network. To wirelessly connect to the Internet on your Xbox, you&#8217;ll need to buy a $100 Wi-Fi adapter. By contrast, the Wii and PlayStation 3 have built-in Wi-Fi.</p>
<p>Anyone who owns a Microsoft Zune media player can buy a TV show or movie and download it to an Xbox or PC as well as the Zune. Zunes can be plugged into the Xbox to play music, as can Apple (AAPL) iPods.</p>
<p>The base Xbox comes with a wireless controller and 512 megabytes of memory. For $100 more, the Elite Holiday Bundle includes a 120-gigabyte hard drive, headset, wireless controller, and two games: &#8220;LEGO Batman: The Videogame&#8221; and &#8220;Pure.&#8221; More than 1,200 games are available for the Xbox, mostly costing between $29 and $60. About 350 of the games can be downloaded from the Xbox LIVE Arcade (costing 400 to 1,600 points, or $5 to $20) or the Games on Demand library.</p>
<p>Microsoft confirmed plans to introduce Project Natal, a system that lets people operate games with gestures and body movements rather than remote controls. Natal will work with all Xbox 360 consoles. Microsoft won&#8217;t confirm a date.</p>
<p>Family settings let parents control whether their kids play games online and with whom they play, as well as the ratings of the games. A Family Timer regulates how long kids play.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Sony PlayStation 3</h4>
<p>Sony&#8217;s PlayStation, like the Xbox 360, is designed with serious gamers in mind. Its base version costs $300 and includes a 120-gigabyte hard drive and a DualShock 3 wireless controller; $50 more buys a version with a 250-gigabyte hard drive. Both systems can be upgraded with any standard 2.5-inch hard drive. The PlayStation is also a Blu-ray disc player.</p>
<p>Like the Xbox, the PlayStation 3, or PS3, now offers extra features, but these features are all included in the PlayStation Network, which is free (not $50 yearly like Xbox LIVE Gold). These PlayStation Network extras include Netflix (NFLX) instant streaming, a Web browser, photo slide shows, the ability to stream media over a home network to the PS3, a Facebook application that shares game information with friends and the PlayStation Network video-delivery service, where users can purchase 2,400 high- and standard-definition movies and 15,000 TV episodes.</p>
<p>The PS3 and the PlayStation Portable, Sony&#8217;s portable gaming device, are married in many ways. A new feature called Blu-ray Portable Copy lets users make a free standard-definition copy of some Blu-ray movies for transfer to a PlayStation Portable. Remote Play lets people stream media files from the PS3 to the PlayStation Portable in Wi-Fi hot spots or remotely turn the PS3 on or off using the PlayStation Portable. Movies and TV shows from the PlayStation Network can be transferred to either system, so you can start a movie on a big-screen TV and finish it on the PlayStation Portable; the same can be done for games.</p>
<p>About 400 games are available on Blu-ray for the PS3; these cost between $30 and $60. More than 150 titles, costing between $3 and $40, can be downloaded directly to the PS3. Sony confirmed that it will release a motion-sensing controller, but it hasn&#8217;t set a date.</p>
<p>Parental restrictions for the PS3 include the ability to restrict games, DVDs and Blu-ray discs with certain ratings. Parents can also limit monthly spending or Web browsing.</p>
