<p>Well-known Silicon Valley entrepreneur Blake Krikorian has joined the board of Amazon, according to several sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Krikorian &#8212; who is considered one of tech&#8217;s most savvy execs with regard to video and media distribution &#8212; co-founded <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20070925/slinging-the-cash/">Sling Media</a>, the maker of the innovative video device Slingbox, in 2004.</p>
<p>(He <a href="http://photos.allthingsd.com/D2">demoed it</a> at the second <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in 2004.)</p>
<p>It was sold in 2007 to EchoStar Communications for $380 million. After a short stint there, Krikorian left and has since been working on a variety of projects and making various investments.</p>
<p>Those include some promising start-ups, such as Lytro, Kno, Clipboard, Chirply and Tasty Labs. Another company he invested in, Clicker, was sold to CBS earlier this year.</p>
<p>He has also been a sought-after exec &#8212; sources said he had offers over the last year from Google and also Zynga.</p>
<p>Amazon certainly could use a director such as Krikorian as it seeks to enter the media distribution space more aggressively. It is about to launch a Kindle tablet, for example, and also is a major bidder for the Hulu premium video service.</p>
<p>It has been rumored that Amazon will soon offer an interactive television device, too.</p>
<p>Krikorian certainly has much experience in the arena. One of his first jobs was at the fabled General Magic, which pioneered the creation of one of the first interactive mobile products before the Internet.</p>
<p>He also started a mobile computing unit for Philips Electronics, as well as working in adjacent arenas at other firms.</p>
<p>The University of California at Los Angeles graduate has a degree in mechanical engineering.</p>
<p>Other directors on Amazon&#8217;s eight-person board, besides CEO and founder Jeff Bezos, include Kleiner Perkins&#8217;s Bing Gordon and Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s Jon Rubinstein.</p>
<p>Krikorian, who declined to comment, will be its ninth member.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Having some money all of a sudden is a weird thing. I&#8217;ve always wondered what entrepreneurs do when they hit it. What do they buy, if at all? How do they react to newfound ducats?</p>
<p>Does life become a 90s rap video? Cham&#8217; bustin&#8217; 24/7?</p>
<p>I basically had no money in my twenties.</p>
<p>I was luckier than most, my parents helped with the rent and I had spending cash via the Web design firm I started in 1995, Mischief New Media. My clients were &#8220;major&#8221; record labels and I designed Web sites for their artists. I wasn&#8217;t that great and as soon as the Web started taking off they brought those things in-house. But I had a knack for product development and saw an opening for better uber-music destinations in a landscape that had few good ones.  So on the side, I started building music sites I would use. RockOnTV, MusicNewsWire and MusicStation, just to name a few. </p>
<p>I got lucky and five years later sold my company to MTV Networks. All those sites were rolled into SonicNet.com, the biggest music site around at the time. Now all defunct!</p>
<p>All of a sudden, I had some money.</p>
<p>What did I do first?</p>
<p>While in my lawyer&#8217;s office I made a copy of the check. Then I found what I thought to be the mailing address of the principal that kicked me out of school before my senior year. I wrote &#8220;F*CK YOU&#8221; on the check and mailed it. I don&#8217;t know if she ever got it. But 11 years after high school graduation, I finally had some closure. Yes, I held a grudge, but now I was over it. It&#8217;s a long story of trust, betrayal, power gone mad, evils of authority and not for this post. :-) She represented all the people that didn&#8217;t believe in me. Deep breath and now back to the story &#8230;</p>
<p>The money. What did I do with the money?</p>
<p>Two things I remember vividly.</p>
<p>First, I called my mom up and said something like this:</p>
<p>Me: It&#8217;s done. I just sold the company to MTV.</p>
<p>Mom: Oh, my god! Oh, my god! I&#8217;m so proud of you!</p>
<p>Me: Bring every bill, everything you owe over to my place tonight. We&#8217;re gonna write some checks.</p>
<p>Mom: Are you serious? (SCREAMING)</p>
<p>Me: Yes, see you later.</p>
<p>So, Mom did just that. And for about an hour that night we wrote checks for credit card bills, rent, school, personal loans &#8230; you name it.</p>
<p>Buying things is certainly a lot of fun. Travel, cars, all that big pimpin&#8217; stuff. But at the end of the day, if you can help or give back to those that did the same for you &#8230; well, that rocks. It&#8217;s a great feeling. More importantly, my mom was directly responsible for my product chops. When I was about 3 years old, she bought me a huge box of building blocks. Simple, made of wood, lots of shapes. There is no doubt in my mind that playing with those blocks shaped my creativity. They made me think about structure, balance, systems and more. She always made sure we had what we needed; she went without and worked hard to provide for us.</p>
<p>To this day, it&#8217;s the proudest moment of my life.</p>
<p>The second thing? Well, let me step back here &#8230;</p>
<p>When you&#8217;re an entrepreneur putting it all on the line, as least with me, I worked constantly. For five years. Eighteen-hour days. Getting out very little. Always thinking about work. Work, work, work. When you have one of these events, like selling, you can go a little crazy for a second. It&#8217;s not over, there is more to do to realize the dream. But it&#8217;s a moment where you get dizzy for a second. And I sort of reverted back to childhood for a few weeks. How so? I went on eBay and bought what I remember to be thousands of Matchbox cars. Why? Who the f*ck knows. I liked them when I was five years old. My mom used to buy me one a week. It was a good memory from simpler times. Now? I was a man-child with cash and clearly no idea what to do with it.</p>
<p>So, I&#8217;m sitting in my apartment and these boxes start coming in. I mean tons of them. Unopened collections of f*cking Matchbox cars. I opened one, took a deep breath and just started laughing. What the hell was I thinking? There was no way I was able to return these. My small apartment was filled with toy cars. What now?</p>
<p>I went out to get something to eat a few days later and I noticed the lobby of my building had these huge bins for a children&#8217;s toy drive. I turned around, got the wheely pushcart in the lobby and went back to my apartment. I loaded the boxes of cars up and within a few trips had given all of them away. Mostly unopened. In these digital times, needy kids probably thought &#8230; what moron is giving me a miniature car? I want Nintendo DS! </p>
<p>And so goes my few weeks of reverting to childhood nuttiness.</p>
<p>Yes, I ended up getting the car and the home. I&#8217;ve bought hundreds of pairs of sneakers that put Quincy Smith&#8217;s collection to shame. I&#8217;ve traveled to all sorts of great places. I love buying stuff for my nieces and nephew. I&#8217;ve pretended to be an angel investor. &#8230; And yes, of course, I&#8217;ve donated to causes (I&#8217;m not totally selfish), mostly having to do with education (see www.cfy.org). But these are the two things I remember most.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Despite serious interest from Apple (AAPL) and Google (GOOG), the market of Internet-connected televisions is still up for grabs, said former chief executive of Sling Media Blake Krikorian in an interview Wednesday.</p>
<p>Speaking on the sidelines of the Allen &#038; Co. media conference in Sun Valley, Mr. Krikorian said television manufacturers like Sony (SNE) and Samsung have an opportunity to band together to compete with companies that are developing ways to blend traditional cable programming with Internet content.</p>
<p>Mr. Krikorian expressed deep skepticism that Google, in particular, could dominate the market of piping digital television and other Internet content into consumers’ living rooms. It is also an open question, he said, whether Apple, whose Apple TV software he praised, can take a lead in the space, or whether cable companies or even TV manufacturers have an opportunity to step in.</p>
<p>Mr. Kirkorian was a central player in the first wave of attempts to connect the Internet and television, founding Sling Media, which makes it possible for users to watch content from their home TVs on mobile phones and computers. He sold Sling Media to EchoStar in 2007 but has continued to advise a number of small and large companies in the digital-media industry.</p>

Announced along with it: A <a href="http://developer.windowsphone.com/">free suite of application development tools</a> and a solid list of launch partners that includes the Associated Press, EA Mobile, Namco, Pandora and Sling Media, among others. One of the OS’s showcase apps:  <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5493703/netflix-app-streams-gorgeously-on-windows-phone-7">Netflix with &#8220;Watch It Now&#8221; 3G video streaming</a>. </p>
<p>Impressive, no? Could this be the beginning of another application development gold rush? Microsoft (MSFT) clearly hopes so. </p>
<p>&#8220;More than half a million Silverlight and tens of thousands of XNA Framework developers are now Windows Phone developers,&#8221; <a href="http://windowsteamblog.com/blogs/wpdev/archive/2010/03/15/the-right-mix.aspx">Windows Phone 7 boss Charlie Kindel wrote in a post to The Windows Phone Developers Blog</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;Developers and designers can now build their code once and optimize it to take advantage of the unique capabilities of the phone, Web, PC or Xbox 360,&#8221; Kindel added. &#8220;Due to common shared libraries, controls and runtimes across these many screens and the cloud, developers now have the opportunity to reach over 1 billion customers.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, it’s far too early to say what&#8217;s to come. It seems clear, however, that with Windows Phone 7, Microsoft could make the jump from mobile OS also-ran to contender fairly quickly–assuming the market’s willing, of course.</p>

<p>On Monday, as part of a press hello-there MySpace is doing this week, BoomTown traveled to Los Angeles for the day to finally check in with the new management at the turmoil-plagued company.</p>
<p>That would be new Co-Presidents Jason Hirschhorn and Michael Jones, who are now ferreting away on a slow rollout of a plan to turn MySpace into a socially-charged entertainment hub.</p>
<p>They took over the Beverly Hills-based social networking site immediately after News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100210/myspace-ceo-van-natta-was-fired-by-news-corp-digital-head-miller-in-late-afternoon-meeting"> suddenly fired CEO Owen Van Natta</a> last month.</p>
<p>The pair reported to Van Natta and, according to pretty much everyone you speak to, were very much at odds with him.</p>
<p>Perhaps that was inevitable due to the awkward way the trio was hired at the same time last April, as part of a grand plan of overhaul.</p>
<p>Their arrival followed the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090422/chris-dewolfe-likely-to-step-down-as-ceo-news-corp-talking-to-facebook-veteran-owen-van-natta">defenestration of co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe</a>, who was blamed for the declining prospects of MySpace in recent years after a red-hot start.</p>
<p>While former Facebook and Amazon (AMZN) exec Van Natta was selected as the experienced one in charge, Hirschhorn ran product and Jones was charged with getting the trains to run on time at MySpace&#8211;when they ran right at all, that is.</p>
<p>That all ended when Miller and Van Natta clashed over control of MySpace, which has about 100 million monthly visitors and just above $350 million in annual revenue.</p>
<p>And faster than you can say <em>Rupe</em>, former AOL (AOL) exec and serial entrepreneur Jones, and Hirschhorn&#8211;who is a well-known media exec with stops at Sling Media and Viacom (VIA)&#8211;got the nod.</p>

<p>What&#8217;s that famous Shakespeare quote? Uneasy lies the head that wears a MySpace crown? Or, in this case, two heads and two crowns!</p>
<p>How deliciously ripe with plot.</p>
<p>And so much to cover: From the corporate intrigue to how News Corp. looks at the troubled property to competition like Facebook to what to do about declining traffic, engagement and advertising revenue to rampant sale or spinoff rumors.</p>
<p>And most of all, and what gets unfortunately lost in all this mess&#8211;what the heck they are doing to innovate the actual product and make it into an entertainment hub.</p>
<p>Thus, here&#8217;s a video interview I did with Hirschhorn and Jones&#8211;at their joint desk, like some digital Oscar Madison and Felix Unger&#8211;where we talk about all this and more, including whether or not Hirschhorn is a <em>kvetcher</em> or not.</p>

<p>Owen Van Natta, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090422/former-facebook-exec-van-natta-set-to-take-over-at-myspace-as-founder-dewolfe-steps-down/">prominent Internet executive brought in to overhaul MySpace</a>, has left after less than a year.</p>
<p>News Corp. (NWS), which owns the social network, has replaced the CEO with his former lieutenants, Mike Jones and Jason Hirschhorn, who have been named co-presidents.</p>
<p>It is Van Natta&#8217;s second consecutive short-tenured job. Prior to MySpace, he ran music start-up Project Playlist, where he stayed for less than six months. Van Natta built his reputation at Facebook and Amazon (AMZN).</p>
<p>A  press release spins this as a mutual decision between Van Natta and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090327/jon-miller-to-news-corp-as-digital-head/">Jon Miller, the News Corp. executive who joined the company less than a year ago himself</a> to run digital operations. But that&#8217;s going to be a difficult story to sell.</p>
<p>For starters, it&#8217;s clear that attempts to turn the social network around are taking much longer than expected, as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100202/news-corp-beats-earnings-revenue-estimates/">News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch</a> acknowledged last week during the company&#8217;s earnings call.</p>
<p>Last fall, News Corp. disclosed that MySpace and the rest of the company&#8217;s digital portfolio were coming up short on their end of a $900 million, three-year search deal with Google (GOOG), which meant <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091104/myspaces-work-in-progress-losing-money-traffic-blowing-google-guarantees/">News Corp. would receive around $100 million less than originally anticipated</a>.</p>
<p>That may be in part because of changes the new MySpace leadership made to the site&#8217;s design, which cut down on some of the page views the old site created. But the shortfall was primarily because the MySpace audience has been migrating to other sites, particularly Facebook, for some time.</p>
<p>MySpace executives have been overhauling the site, mainly under the hood, and rolling out a series of incremental changes in recent weeks. These changes aren&#8217;t supposed to win back Facebook users&#8211;the company has declared that it&#8217;s no longer trying to compete with that site as a social network anymore&#8211;but are designed to help it hang on to existing users and establish itself as some sort of entertainment hub.</p>
<p>A tough task under any circumstance. But tensions in the corporate suite didn&#8217;t make it easier. Miller hired Van Natta, but the CEO didn&#8217;t bring in the two executives directly beneath him; both Jones and Hirschhorn were hired by Miller (along with Murdoch, who signed off on both men).</p>
<p>People who have talked to Van Natta say he has been relatively public about his frustrations at the job in recent weeks. Describing Jones and Hirschhorn as happy campers would be a stretch, too.</p>
<p>But whatever finally prompted the move seems to have come relatively quickly: The MySpace and News Corp. insiders I&#8217;ve talked to so far seem taken aback by Van Natta&#8217;s departure.</p>

Mr. Van Natta will be replaced by newly-elevated co-Presidents Mike Jones and Jason Hirschhorn, who will each report to Jon Miller, Chairman and CEO of Digital Media for News Corporation.  All three executives joined MySpace in April 2009, with Mr. Jones and Mr. Hirschhorn previously serving as Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer, respectively.</p>
<p>&#8220;Owen took on an incredible challenge in working to refocus and revitalize MySpace, and the business has shown very positive signs recently as a result of his dedicated work,&#8221; said Jon Miller, News Corporation’s Chairman and CEO of Digital Media. &#8220;However, in talking to Owen about his priorities both personally and professionally going forward, we both agreed that it was best for him to step down at this time. I want to thank Owen for all of his efforts.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr. Miller continued, &#8220;Mike and Jason have demonstrated true leadership in their operational and product guidance, respectively, and I have the utmost confidence in both of them to lead MySpace into its next chapter.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a joint statement, Mr. Jones and Mr. Hirschhorn noted:</p>
<p>“We joined MySpace last April with very a specific set of goals in mind, and are anxious to continue working together to make those goals a reality. This business is now pointed in the right direction, and we have a great team of employees that will continue to push MySpace closer to its potential as the place where people go to be discovered and to discover great content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mr. Van Natta commented:</p>
<p>&#8220;MySpace is an incredibly unique place and we&#8217;ve made real gains in terms of product focus and user experience.  I’m proud of the work we’ve all accomplished together and look forward to watching its continued growth.&#8221;</p>
<p>Prior to his role as MySpace COO, Mr. Jones founded and operated several online businesses, including Userplane, a leading provider of tools for online communities such as MySpace. Userplane was acquired in 2006 by AOL, where Jones subsequently served as a senior vice president and focused on social media monetization and also pioneered the distribution of widgets and other technology to Web publishers. He also was founder and CEO of Tsavo Media, an online content and search network developing next-generation publishing platforms and technology services.</p>
<p>Since joining MySpace, Mr. Hirschhorn oversaw all aspects of product development, and previously has led both start-up and established online businesses. He was president of Sling Media, Inc.&#8217;s Entertainment Group, which created consumer-driven applications and services for the Slingbox device, and was chief digital officer at MTV Networks, where he oversaw the company&#8217;s digital media businesses, products and strategies. <p>We feel <em>very</em> lucky to get here, especially in the midst of what our own site&#8217;s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com">Digital Daily scribe, John Paczkowski</a>, has so perfectly dubbed the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/category/econalypse/">&#8220;econalypse.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>Ironically, <a href="http://walt.allthingsd.com">Walt Mossberg</a> and I planned to launch the very first conference in the middle of the last major downturn for tech, in 2001. But, in the carnage of the Web 1.0 meltdown, we actually held off for two years, with our first <strong>D</strong> gathering taking place in 2003.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s been a real winning streak since then for <strong>D</strong>, due in large part to our great speakers&#8211;such as Microsoft (MSFT) icon Bill Gates and Apple (AAPL) legend Steve Jobs.</p>

<p>We have had a lot of great moments onstage with all these tech and media players over the years, to be sure, with interviews ranging from the funny to the sublime to the truly disastrous.</p>
<p>But, like the digital industry and the innovation our conference focuses on, we also like to lean forward to try to figure out what the Next Big Thing is around the corner, whether it comes from Silicon Valley or not.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s why we&#8217;re kicking off our conference on May 26 with two of the founders of Twitter&#8211;Biz Stone and Evan Williams&#8211;who are riding high on tech&#8217;s latest hot thing, which might turn out to be either a rocket ship or a shooting star.</p>
<p>They&#8217;ll be followed up over the next two days by a plethora of interesting players, from the leaders of several major mobile companies to content execs hit hard by fast-moving digital forces to a new Internet leader like Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, who is trying to turn around one of the Web&#8217;s great icons from its more recent lackluster path.</p>
<p>And, as we always do, we will be featuring a spate of demos too, trying to see if we can unearth that next <em>next</em> thing.</p>
<p>In the past, the <strong>D</strong> stage has seen the debut of start-up products like Sling Media&#8217;s Slingbox, Aliph&#8217;s Jawbone and Pure Digital&#8217;s Flip, all of which have gone onto glory. And also some, like Palm&#8217;s Foleo, which did not.</p>
<p>While not everyone can attend <strong>D</strong>, our crack staff is committed to bringing all the action from this year&#8217;s conference to readers of the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> site via up-to-the-minute blogs, photos, videos, tweets, digs and more. <p>Brand new MySpace CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">Owen Van Natta</a> started things off Monday with his first day on the job. He was joined by new COO and former AOL exec Mike Jones and new chief product officer and former Sling Media exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/myspace-musical-chairs-jason-hirschhorn-also-in-at-myspace-as-chief-product-officer/">Jason Hirschhorn</a>. Down in Los Angeles at the AlwaysOn OnHollywood conference, Boomtown ran smack into Huff Post mastermind Arianna Huffington, who extolled the virtues and abilities of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090428/arianna-huffington-talks-about-new-managing-editor-singh/">new managing editor Jai Singh</a>, former editor-in-chief of CNET Networks. At AOL, in preparation for spinning off the Time Warner (TWX) Online unit, new CEO Tim Armstrong began appointing new senior execs and spinning off existing ones. Platform-A president and former Yahoo (YHOO) sales exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090429/exclusive-platform-a-head-coleman-out-at-aol-as-well-as-cfo-and-more-to-come/">Greg Coleman, who joined the AOL team in February, is leaving the company, to be replaced by Jeff Levick</a>, who is leaving Google (GOOG)&#8211;where he had a close relationship with Armstrong. CFO Nisha Kumar is also leaving AOL, and a search is underway for her replacement. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090429/time-warner-makes-it-official-aol-spinoff-is-coming/">MediaMemo has more</a> on Time Warner&#8217;s decision to spin off AOL. A number of Flickr engineers were laid off Wednesday, but <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090430/flickr-co-founder-butterfield-and-chief-architect-henderson-working-on-stealth-start-up/">Chief Architect Cal Henderson</a> has left the company of his own accord and is working on a stealth start-up with Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield. Last, but not least, one of the voices covering the digital scene has found a new gig. Owen Thomas, self-described &#8220;scourge of [Silicon] Valley,&#8221; is leaving Valleywag to head up GE (GE) unit NBC Universal’s new &#8220;Bay Area&#8221; Web site, whose motto is “Locals Only.” He&#8217;ll be replaced by fresh-faced Ryan Tate, recently the night editor for Gawker. <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090501/who-shot-valleywag-gossip-bloggers-thomas-outgoing-and-tate-incoming-speak/">Both reporters talked to BoomTown</a> on Friday about the changes.</p>
<p>MediaMemo wrote on Monday about Condé Nast <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090427/is-conde-nast-shuttering-portfolio/">shutting down Portfolio</a>&#8211;both the print magazine and the accompanying Web site. On a cautionary note, MM outlined the reasons why Portfolio&#8217;s business magazine peers <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090428/why-portfolios-peers-shouldnt-be-celebrating/">should not celebrate the loss of a competitor</a>, even (or especially) during tough economic times. Is the meteoric ascension of Twitter flattening out? According to a Nielsen Online study, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090428/is-twittermania-running-facefirst-into-quittermania/">60 percent of Twitter&#8217;s users leave after a month</a>. This was met with a lot of skepticism so Nielsen ran the numbers again with the same results&#8211;<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090430/nielsen-were-sticking-with-our-60-twitter-quitter-number/">and this time it&#8217;s sticking with them</a>. MediaMemo also had an explanation for why the long-awaited <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090501/why-it-took-more-than-four-months-and-millions-of-dollars-to-get-lost-on-hulu/">deal between Disney (DIS) and Hulu</a> took months and months and millions of dollars to finally come together. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090430/finally-disney-hulu-deal-announced/">Digital Daily had more on that story.</a></p>
<p>Digital Daily also had more info on the ever-evolving Palm (PALM) Pre story. First, a rumor that Palm plans to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090429/palm-pre-on-june-7-no-way/">launch the handset on June 7</a>&#8211;which would be crazy, given the fact that June 8 is both the first day of Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Worldwide Developers Conference and the day that those in the know expect the next-generation iPhone to drop. Then, there&#8217;s an assertion by Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar based on supply chain research that Palm has <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090430/analyst-the-pre-is-doa/">greatly reduced its production numbers</a>. Time will have to tell, though, because Palm certainly isn&#8217;t talking yet. Of course, things could be worse. Dell (DELL) hasn&#8217;t even solidified plans for its rumored smartphone, and already, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090429/dude-your-phone-is-dull/">no one really cares</a>.</p>
<p>Dell&#8217;s new Adamo laptop and Studio One 19 desktop aren&#8217;t causing much excitement either. In this week&#8217;s Personal Technology column, Walt Mossberg reports that although both machines look good and function well, <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090429/dell-aims-for-style-with-new-laptop-and-family-model/">neither is groundbreaking</a>. In <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com/20090429/improving-pc-performance/">Mossberg&#8217;s Mailbox</a>, Walt answered readers&#8217; questions about improving performance on a PC, using peripheral devices with an iPhone and installing Apple&#8217;s OS X on a Windows machine. And in this week&#8217;s <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090428/ipod-to-reach-out-and-touch-someone/">Mossberg Solution</a>, Katie Boehret tested three apps from the iTunes App Store that make it possible for the iPod touch to function like an iPhone.</p>

<p>MySpace has officially announced the appointment of entrepreneur and former AOL exec Mike Jones as COO, as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">BoomTown reported earlier today</a>.</p>
<p>But the social-networking site also named former Sling Media top exec Jason Hirschhorn as chief product officer in what has become a series of senior management moves at MySpace.</p>
<p>The paidContent Web site <a href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/419-industry-moves-userplane-founder-mike-jones-joins-myspace-as-coo/">first reported on the Hirschhorn appointment</a> earlier this morning.</p>
<p>Besides Sling, which he recently left in a mass departure of top execs, Hirschhorn was also the top digital exec at MTV Networks and was part of the team at Viacom (VIA) that unsuccessfully tried to buy MySpace many years ago.</p>
<p>Both Hirschhorn and Jones, who are already based in Los Angeles, will report to newly named CEO Owen Van Natta, the former COO of Facebook, who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090424/van-natta-confirmed-as-ceo-of-myspace-the-full-press-release/">replaced MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe last week</a>.</p>
<p>Recently installed News Corp. (NWS) digital head Jon Miller has put in place a trio of well-known Internet execs at the top of MySpace, which has seen its buzz and momentum wane in the face of the huge growth at Facebook.</p>
<p>MySpace&#8217;s motto is &#8220;A Place for Friends.&#8221; But it might very well now be: A place for wandering digital execs.</p>
<p>And expect more top execs to wander away from MySpace too. Once the trio get their bearings, many sources indicate that News Corp., the owner of MySpace, has given Van Natta and his key execs free rein to remake the unit.</p>
<p>There is a lot to fix at the entertainment-, music- and media-heavy site, from a renegotiation with Google (GOOG) over its advertising search deal to goosing traffic to innovating its look and feel.</p>
<p>In addition, MySpace is likely to forge closer tech ties with Silicon Valley, where Facebook is based.</p>
<p>News Corp. already noted that it was in talks with MySpace co-founder and President Tom Anderson about a new role in the company. Also likely to get a major look-see are top execs like sales head Jeff Berman and CTO Aber Whitcomb, as well as a number of others.</p>
<p>To begin, though, the trio will meet the staff of MySpace, more than 1,000 people, in an all-hands event to be held outside of its building in Beverly Hills, Calif., at about 3:30 p.m. today.</p>
<p>Sources tell me there is no space big enough at the HQ to accommodate them, so the courtyard of the building will be used.</p>
<p>BoomTown is in Los Angeles today, by coincidence, but will not be crashing the event, so send interesting tidbits my way.</p>

Michael Jones has been named Chief Operating Officer and Jason Hirschhorn has been named Chief Product Officer, effective immediately. Hirschhorn joined MTV Networks following the acquisition of his company, Mischief New Media, which provided interactive services to the entertainment industry.</p>

<p>To tease that out: The Sling team can rightly point to a string of successes&#8211;the company racked up a number of awards at both the Consumer Electronics Show and MacWorld last week&#8211;but if things were humming smoothly at Echostar, you&#8217;d think the company would find a way to make them stick around.</p>
<p>The Slingbox is a potentially disruptive technology, but it&#8217;s still nascent, and Sling.com just launched late last year and will need a motivated team to help it gain traction in a crowded field. All those involved say they&#8217;ll be taking time off; everyone who knows the team involved finds that hard to believe.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>So Carson Daly, of all people, turns out to be an unlikely geek&#8211;but he sounded pretty sharp onstage interviewing a clutch of tech figures last night at the opening of <a href="http://alwayson.goingon.com/configure/customize/7">AlwaysOn OnHollywood</a> conference, the Tony Perkins-led event being held at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood through tomorrow.</p>

<p>The late-night television host is involved with Demand Media, the user publishing-and-content platform, in its new .tv initiatives, and he talked about the state of the video market with Demand&#8217;s CEO Richard Rosenblatt, MP3tunes CEO Michael Robertson, Sling Media head Blake Krikorian and YouTube Co-Founder and CEO Chad Hurley.</p>
<p>Their chat was mostly about the massive impact video is making and will continue to make in the coming year, especially related to giving consumers a lot of leeway and control via tech tools. &#8220;You have to give [users] everything they want, anywhere they want,&#8221; said Robertson. &#8220;&#8230; But just because everyone has a Webcam, it does not mean it will result in good content.&#8221;</p>

<p>Sling&#8217;s Krikorian was more positive. &#8220;There will be a democratization of production tools,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And [traditional media companies] are going to be giving up ground. It&#8217;s just a question of seize the opportunity.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hurley said YouTube intended to do that in the year ahead in the mobile market especially, given that his less-produced trove of user-generated video &#8220;look a lot better on the phone.&#8221; He declined to talk specifically about the $1 billion lawsuit that media giant Viacom is waging against YouTube, which was recently purchased by Google for $1.65 billion, even as Robertson prodded him by welcoming Hurley into the &#8220;10-digit lawsuit club.&#8221; Robertson&#8217;s former company, the MP3.com online music service, was the subject of earlier copyright lawsuits.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a bigger vision,&#8221; said Hurley. &#8220;We have a big opportunity ahead of us to find solutions to monetize video and create a new market.&#8221; But he was mum on what those ad solutions will look like. &#8220;We&#8217;re experimenting,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Rosenblatt was the most visionary of the lot, though, predicting the rise of a more vertical Web and &#8220;microcommunities&#8221; that people will join. &#8220;People want their own channels,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I do believe users want more choices.&#8221; That means, he added, that the mass-media plays that Hollywood specializes in would be under siege.</p>
<p>But it was Daly who managed to be most pithy about that trend. Speaking for Hollywood, said Daly, &#8220;The Internet scares the crap out of us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Another surprisingly entertaining speaker was Motorola&#8217;s CTO Padmasree Warrior, who was there to talk about the cellphone maker&#8217;s aspirations beyond the device. She also stressed &#8220;personalcasting,&#8221; and noted that &#8220;individuals have choices and preferences and the device should know those preferences.&#8221; She also said mobility was the biggest trend she saw, using a rapidly blinking dot shown on the screen to represent cellphones bought worldwide (32 every second; that&#8217;s 2.7 billion mobile devices, more than three times the number of personal computers). That means, she noted, that companies like Motorola had to cozy up to content folks. &#8220;As CTO of Motorola, I never thought I would be in Hollywood,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I am a geek.&#8221; Indeed.</p>

<p>I also moderated an opening panel this morning called &#8220;Breaking News and Analysis 2.0&#8243; with Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor of the political powerhouse site Huffington Post; Alan Citron, general manager of the gossip site TMZ.com; and Kevin Rose, founder of Digg. The conversation, which you can see streamed off the OnHollywood Web site, centered on the mainstream media&#8217;s challenges from outfits like those run by the three panelists. Huffington, as usual, was full of quips, especially when talking about the need to stop making the online/offline distinction. She compared it to the false choice between &#8220;Gilligan&#8217;s Island&#8221; hotties MaryAnn and Ginger. &#8220;You should have a threesome,&#8221; said Huffington.</p>
<p>Rose was probably glad to be in a quieter venue after yesterday&#8217;s noisy controversy over the removal of stories from his social news site that contained a secret DVD encryption key. The company&#8217;s lawyers advised execs at Digg that it might be illegal to have published them. The purging caused a revolt on the site by its very active, First Amendment-wielding users, who flooded the site with stories about the key. Rose backed down&#8211;did he <em>really</em> have a choice?&#8211;and in a blog post on Digg wrote, “We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be. If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.”</p>
<p>He reiterated the sentiment at the conference, which garnered applause, even if Digg might actually die trying.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Most people understand the concept of time shifting for television shows. Using a digital video recorder, such as a TiVo, or a videocassette recorder, you can record a TV program for viewing at a time that is more convenient for you.</p>
<p>But there is another idea for making TV watching convenient that is less well known. It is called &#8220;place shifting.&#8221; Place shifting allows viewers to watch TV shows they receive at home in other locations, and on devices other than their TV sets.</p>
<p>Unlike time shifting, which has been around for decades, place shifting is just getting going. A few portable video players are available, but they can&#8217;t play live TV, only shows recorded on special TiVo models or relatively expensive TV-capable &#8220;Media Center&#8221; PCs. And they are clumsy to use.</p>
<p>Today, however, place shifting of TV shows takes a big leap forward. A Silicon Valley start-up company called Sling Media is introducing a $250 gadget it calls a &#8220;personal broadcaster.&#8221; This small device, named the Slingbox, can beam any live TV show coming into your home to an Internet-connected Windows PC anywhere in the world. It also allows you to remotely watch shows you have recorded at home on a TiVo or other digital video recorder.</p>

<p>The Slingbox gives you full control of your home TV and digital recorder even if you are thousands of miles away. You can change channels, use the program guide, and perform any action on the menus of your TV or recorder just as if you were sitting in front of your set. The home TV doesn&#8217;t even have to be on at the time.</p>
<p>And, best of all, the Slingbox is just a piece of hardware, not a service. It is a small silver box that simply sits between your cable or satellite receiver and your home broadband Internet connection and pumps your TV programs out via the Internet. It doesn&#8217;t require a TiVo, and it works with a standard Windows PC.</p>
<p>There are no periodic fees to pay, no membership is required and no advertisements are beamed at you other than the normal commercials that appear in the TV programs. All you shell out is the $250 for the device itself. Starting today, it will be available at CompUSA and Best Buy stores, and at those companies&#8217; Web sites.</p>
<p>I have been testing the Slingbox at home, in my office and on the road. In my tests, it worked exactly as advertised. At my office, about a dozen miles from home, I watched recorded episodes of &#8220;Charlie Rose&#8221; and &#8220;Desperate Housewives.&#8221; At an airport, I watched CNBC live on my laptop via a public Wi-Fi connection. And in a Boston hotel room, about 450 miles from home, I watched a live Washington Nationals baseball game unavailable in Red Sox country.</p>
<p>The Slingbox was even useful when I hung around the house. I was able to watch live and recorded shows in rooms of my house that lacked TVs, and even while sitting out on my porch.</p>
<p>Video quality was surprisingly good &#8212; much better than the average video clip streamed over the Internet. The company has some video-optimizing technology that resulted in mostly smooth, stutter-free viewing. There were a few brief freezes, but nothing serious, even when I expanded the video playback window to the full screen.</p>
<p>The Sling software is well designed and easy to use. It allows you to view TV programs in a variety of sizes and formats, and it includes a software control panel with all of the key functions of your home remote control.</p>
<p>Setup, while not perfect, was as easy as the company could possibly make it, given the complexity of computer networking.</p>
<p>That brings me to the inevitable downsides and limitations of any new product. The Slingbox requires a broadband connection on both ends. It only works on PCs running Windows XP. The company has demonstrated it running on PDAs and cellphones, but software for those devices isn&#8217;t ready yet. Software for Macintosh computers is in the works.</p>
<p>You need a home network and a router. And even though the setup software and the manual are very well done, there is a step where you have to configure your router for the Slingbox that can get complicated fast. This has more to do with the needless complexity of computer networking than with Sling Media itself, but it can be an obstacle.</p>
<p>Also, the Slingbox doesn&#8217;t allow you to record or save the programs you receive on your remote computer, mostly for legal reasons &#8212; though somebody will probably come up with a way to do that. Similarly, mainly for legal reasons, there is no built-in way to give access to your Slingbox to another person, but all that person needs is a copy of the free Sling software, your password and your Slingbox&#8217;s ID number, which you could give them. Two PCs can&#8217;t access the same Slingbox at the same time, however.</p>
<p>There is another problem with the Slingbox: It extends the fight over the remote well beyond the walls of your home. If someone is watching the TV at home and you start changing channels from afar or launching recorded programs the other person doesn&#8217;t want to watch, long-distance arguments can ensue.</p>
<p>Still, I really like the Slingbox and can heartily recommend it to roaming TV lovers. It is a very good product that finally makes TV place shifting a reality.</p>
