<p>Like many of the 100 million monthly active Twitter users, I tweet all the time, but I stopped doing it through Twitter&#8217;s own site, Twitter.com, ages ago. That&#8217;s because tons of desktop and mobile apps, such as TweetDeck and even Twitter for BlackBerry, are simply more feature-filled and easier to use. </p>
<p>Now Twitter has revamped its website, deconstructing its menus to be more approachable and easier to use, even for Twitter newbies. So I returned to the site and found three features that make a big difference. Meanwhile, two features I hoped would, by now, be available on the site still aren&#8217;t. </p>
<p>Twitter is a short-messaging social network that limits each user&#8217;s posts, or tweets, to 140 characters. Some people tweet such mundane things as what they ate for lunch, while others tweet play-by-play accounts of live events or links to news stories. You&#8217;ll only see someone&#8217;s tweets if you &#8220;follow&#8221; them, and followers can retweet, mark as a favorite or reply to a tweet. </p>
<p>The new Twitter is slowly rolling out to all users over the next few weeks, and will automatically replace the old version of the site. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Easier on the Eyes</h5>
<p>The first thing people will notice about the new Twitter is that everything that was once hugging the right side of the screen has shifted to the left. A black banner across the top gives users the feeling of being anchored—an improvement over the past, lost feeling. The Twitter app for iPhone and Android devices also has this black banner. </p>

<h5 class="subhed">Better Reading and Browsing </h5>
<p>Two features (one new and one improved) found under Twitter&#8217;s Discover tab solve the problem of what to read given the overwhelming number of choices in this social network. </p>
<p>The Stories feature, though in its infancy, has the potential to become the first thing people skip to when they open Twitter.com. Here, Twitter displays 10 stories it thinks you&#8217;ll want to read. These are curated using an algorithm: Twitter studies the accounts you follow and serves up similar stories. Twitter also considers your location and which stories you interact with so that, over time, it will give you more personalized offerings.</p>
<p>Done right, Stories could solve the problem of missing news on Twitter, where tweets speed by in an ever-changing stream and can be missed unless users look at the site all the time. </p>
<p>Browse Categories is a redesigned, improved version of Browse Interests. It groups people you might want to follow by category. For example, Entertainment includes Tom Hanks, Chelsea Handler and the Twitter account for the movie reviews website Rotten Tomatoes. This will be a help for people new to Twitter, as it can be hard to figure out how to get started. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Following the Tit-for-Tat</h5>
<p>Conversations on Twitter can be hard to follow. That&#8217;s mostly because when people reply to a tweet, only that response—not the original tweet—gets sent to followers. Now, users can catch up on entire conversations by clicking on any tweet to read the back-and-forth between two people. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Feeling More Popular</h5>
<p>Social networks are, of course, far more interesting when people actually interact with you. Unless you&#8217;re famous, an avid Twitter user with plenty of followers or both, Twitter can feel a bit stale after a while.</p>
<p>The Connect tab has two subcategories: Interactions and Mentions. Interactions is a new feature that displays more of the hidden activities related to your Twitter account, making you feel more engaged with the network. These Interactions list whenever another user mentions your username, &#8220;favorites&#8221; one of your tweets, retweets one of your tweets, follows you or adds you to a public list. </p>
<p>As always, Mentions still includes only the tweets in which your username is mentioned. Some people will be frustrated that the new location for this category is less prominent than in the old version of Twitter.com. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Short on URLs </h5>
<p>Twitter has always lagged behind other sites and apps when it comes to URL shortening—taking a long, messy web link and automatically shrinking it down. Most people think that Twitter doesn&#8217;t shorten URLs at all. That&#8217;s in part because it only shortens them to 20 characters (still too long) and doesn&#8217;t obviously notify users that it&#8217;s doing this.</p>
<p>Also, the tweet-composing box doesn&#8217;t show a preview of what the shortened URL will look like before you share it with followers. Without a smarter built-in URL shortener, Twitter forces people to use other services, like bitly.com, to shorten links. </p>
<h5 class="subhed">Retweet, But No Comment</h5>
<p>Twitter still doesn&#8217;t let its users retweet, or share someone else&#8217;s tweet to their followers with their own added comment. (Some apps refer to this as quoting a tweet.) This means I can only re-share exactly what someone else posted—there&#8217;s no way to include what I think of the tweet. Almost all of Twitter&#8217;s apps enable adding comments in retweets. A spokeswoman for Twitter says this feature is often requested and the company is actively considering it. </p>

<p>Last night, the <a href="http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/11/30/yahoo-board-leans-toward-selling-minority-stake/">New York Times</a> dropped a juicy little tidbit into its everything-but-the-kitchen-sink daily update of the board mishegas at Yahoo around the deliberations yesterday over two competing private equity bids to buy a partial stake in the company.</p>
<p>No, not the one about Jeff Jordan &#8212; former eBay exec, OpenTable CEO and now VC at Andreessen Horowitz &#8212; possibly taking a big role at Yahoo if the firm&#8217;s bid with Silver Lake prevailed &#8212; which was mysteriously removed very soon after it posted (&#8217;cuz he will not, so good move, NYT!)</p>
<p>I mean the one about the venture firm&#8217;s big-kahuna partner, Marc Andreessen &#8212; who will indeed take a board seat and play a strong role in Yahoo&#8217;s future if his bid wins &#8212; getting a possible competitor in the Silicon Valley savior section of the ongoing show.</p>
<p>That would be in the form of Reid Hoffman, the well-known entrepreneur, VC and angel investor, who the Times said had talked with TPG Capital, Silver Lake&#8217;s rival in the Yahoo bidding, about becoming a possible partner.</p>
<p>Wrote the Times:</p>
<p>&#8220;TPG has held discussions with Greylock Partners, another venture capital firm, about a possible alignment, two people said. TPG is hoping to draw on the expertise of Reid Hoffman, one of Greylock&#8217;s partners and the founder of the professional social network LinkedIn, these people said.&#8221;</p>

<p>Translation: If Silver Lake has a tech icon of substance on its team to give uber-geek appeal to its offer &#8212; <em><a href="http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/dagnabbit">dagnabbit</a></em> &#8212; then TPG was going to raise with another one, whom the very same Times reporter who wrote last night&#8217;s article <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/06/business/reid-hoffman-of-linkedin-has-become-the-go-to-guy-of-tech.html?pagewanted=all">recently nicknamed &#8220;The Start-Up Whisperer&#8221;</a> in a recent glowing profile of Hoffman.</p>
<p>While I am still trying to grok what a start-up whisperer exactly means (and how someone as self-effacing as Hoffman would react to such a twee moniker without snickering), it&#8217;s a move that has likely already irritated Silver Lake.</p>
<p>After all, TPG aiming at nabbing Hoffman is akin to two crazy neighbors trying to one-up each other in holiday-lighting lawn decor. (You have a singing Santa, so <em>I&#8217;ll</em> have a singing Santa &#8212; and I might even add a Lady Gaga-themed crèche for good measure!)</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not a bad instinct, either, to get your own live-action Silicon Valley legend, even if it is only half true in Hoffman&#8217;s case.</p>
<p>Because, according to sources who know such things, while Hoffman and TPG have had conversations, there have been no commitments, and nothing is close to being agreed on to link the pair.</p>
<p>That could certainly change, and quickly, but Hoffman or Greylock aren&#8217;t currently in TPG&#8217;s proposal to Yahoo.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s in contrast to Andreessen, who is all in (I am not even going to bother with &#8220;sources said&#8221; here, since everyone and my mother has seen the proposal) with Silver Lake on the deal to purchase 19.9 percent of Yahoo for about $16.50 a share. </p>

<p>As I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111130/yahoo-bidders-come-in-at-16-50-to-17-50-with-plan-to-keep-jerry-yang-staying-on-board/">reported earlier this week</a>, for Silver Lake&#8217;s money and expertise in fixing broken things, the bid includes: Silver Lake getting three board seats; cash going to a buyback of stock or granting of a dividend to shareholders; the ability to select a CEO; approval of its strategic plan for Yahoo, and its solution to come to terms with Yahoo&#8217;s unhappy Asian partners; and all the purple wearables you could ever hope for (perhaps Yahoo&#8217;s best asset, IMHO, especially worn by such obviously cool dudes, as seen here).</p>
<p>Also, controversial Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang gets to stay around on the board (but only if he becomes very, very quiet, so as not to rile the activist shareholders).</p>
<p>TPG&#8217;s bid is less formed, although its price is slightly higher. And the PE firm has yet to check the &#8220;Big Geek Included&#8221; box. </p>
<p>Hence, the floating of Hoffman as a contender to take on Andreessen, who was once dubbed the &#8220;Golden Geek&#8221; by Time magazine.</p>
<p>I hope TPG does, soon, since what a matchup it would be!</p>
<p>But, for now at least, the pair &#8212; who share big investments in a range of Web companies, most especially Facebook (Andreessen is on the board of the social networking giant, and Hoffman was an early investor and adviser) &#8212; are at peace.</p>

<p>Last Thursday, both Facebook and Google seemed to suddenly have <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110811/facebook-and-googles-dueling-game-announcements-tonight/">gaming announcements at the exact same time</a>. Due to the scheduling snafu, much was made of the ongoing war between the pair of Silicon Valley giants.</p>
<p>Some had speculated that Facebook moved up its developers-only event in order to screw up the news that Google+ was adding games to the social network. Others surmised that Google had rushed its plans in order to steal Facebook&#8217;s thunder about its improvements.</p>
<p>Not so on either side, as it turns out, especially since these kinds of complex events &#8212; and with so many varied partners &#8212; are a little like herding cats. In other words, you need to do a lot of planning.</p>
<p>According to sources, Google had long planned to announce its offerings this week. And, as you can see from the email below, Facebook had its invites out a while back.</p>
<p>Thus, although it makes for a gripping narrative, we can put away the cutlasses at dawn.</p>
<p>For now.</p>
<p>Because the real substance of the competition &#8212; each trying to draw more users to its games, which has been big business on Facebook &#8212; remains in effect, as the pair continue to make moves into each others&#8217; businesses going forward.</p>
<p>Also impacted by Google+ games: Apple.</p>
<p>As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110811/how-google-games-undercuts-both-facebook-and-apple/">Tricia Duryee noted</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Google&#8217;s move into videogames today should scare both Facebook and Apple, the two leading next-generation game platforms. In particular, what should be frightening is that Google is attempting to break today&#8217;s 30 percent cut that has become standard across both Facebook and Apple.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s scary, for sure. But, at least when it comes to scheduling, sometimes an event is just an event.</p>

<p>In the last month, the<a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110809/heres-why-wall-street-is-killing-aol/"> stock of AOL has declined</a> just over 50 percent.</p>
<p>But that drop is not just due to the turbulent markets of late. AOL stock had a 50 percent drop over the last six months, a 57 percent decline since the beginning of the year, and a 56 percent plunge since it went public in late 2009.</p>
<p>Which is why some in the industry &#8212; at private equity firms and bigger companies &#8212; have noted to me that the price of AOL might have gotten low enough for a very cheap takeover.</p>
<p>&#8220;You have to look, even with all the problems they have been struggling to fix,&#8221; said one person, who also underscored the advertising and other challenges that AOL faces. &#8220;But it is so inexpensive, it&#8217;s also an interesting idea.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said another large investor: &#8220;It&#8217;s almost free, given its cash on hand.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, since in its <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110809/aols-ad-dollars-finally-rise/">recent second-quarter earnings report</a>, AOL said that, as of June 30, it has $458.7 million in cash.</p>
<p>That matters, since at $10.22 a share &#8212; a far cry from its $28.45 high of all time in late April of 2010 &#8212; the market valuation of the New York-based Internet giant is only $1.09 billion.</p>
<p>You do the math.</p>
<p>To give that number perspective, AOL paid out $315 million in cash to buy the Huffington Post in the beginning of this year. And, let us not forget, under different management, AOL <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100407/bebo-not-worth-a-pail-of-spit-to-aol-this-comes-as-a-shock-to-exactly-hmm-no-one/">forked over $850 million in cash</a> to buy the Bebo social network in 2008, and sold it for a song last year.</p>
<p>Even AOL thinks the price is low, announcing a $250 million stock buyback program this morning, just as shares hit their lowest point ever yesterday.</p>
<p>The stock is up today, though still in the basement.</p>
<p>To be fair, comparable companies&#8217; valuations have also taken a hit recently. Yahoo shares are down 29 percent since the beginning of the year, giving it an affordable $15.3 billion valuation; and Demand Media&#8217;s stock has dropped 63 percent in that period, making its current price tag only $703 million.</p>

<p>Allison Johnson, who had been a top marketing exec for Apple, is finally close to launching on a new kind of marketing firm, sources said, with backing from Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and Malaria No More co-founder Ray Chambers.</p>
<p>Sources said that Johnson &#8212; who had been Apple&#8217;s vice president of worldwide marketing communications since 2005, before she quit in March &#8212; has since been ruminating on how to create a different kind of marketing company. Its aim is to help big companies and brands connect more effectively with smaller tech companies and burgeoning social networks.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a different new model, although it&#8217;s certainly a full-service solution for companies from a marketing point of view,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;But it does not conform to a typical agency.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear how much funding Dorsey or Chambers have put up or when the firm will launch. It&#8217;s been in formation for many months, said sources. </p>
<p>But Johnson has been working closely on its creation with longtime Silicon Valley PR exec Sarah Ross and others. Previously, she had been talking about such a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110331/exclusive-global-marketing-vp-allison-johnson-leaving-apple/">partnership with Facebook PR exec Brandee Barker</a>, who is no longer involved in the project. </p>
<p>Johnson has also talked to former Facebook marketing director <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110803/exclusive-randi-zuckerberg-leaves-facebook-to-start-new-social-media-firm-resignation-letter/">Randi Zuckerberg</a>, who left the social networking site last week to start her own marketing firm, about working together.</p>
<p>Johnson declined to comment on the venture. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As kids, we&#8217;re taught to share and share alike, and nowhere is this more clear than on Facebook, where some 600 million users share private details about their lives—and a lot of that sharing involves photos. People who once shared digital albums via photo-sharing websites now simply post those on Facebook for friends to see. </p>

<p>This week, I tested an effort by photo-sharing sites to win back users&#8217; attention: by importing photos from none other than Facebook, itself. With your permission, these sites access your Facebook page&#8217;s photos, as well as the pages of any friends who share their Facebook photos with you, and use these images to make photo albums—for online or for the coffee table. </p>
<p>I tested Shutterfly Inc.&#8217;s new Custom Path for making photo books, which produced a handsome book but didn&#8217;t link as smoothly as it should with Facebook. I also tried a beautiful new website called ZangZing that grabs and organizes images from a variety of social networks to create digital albums.</p>

<p>There are ups and downs to using photos from Facebook in this manner. The major advantage is you can access several people&#8217;s photos rather than relying on just your own photos to create an album or project. This means if you forgot a camera at your parents&#8217; 40th anniversary party, you may be able to use a friend&#8217;s photos to create a digital album or a photo book. And because photos shared on Facebook are often captured using smartphones and shared nowhere else but Facebook, they are then unique memories of the event.</p>
<p>On the negative side, Facebook downsizes photos before storing them on its website, so the quality isn&#8217;t that of the original digital file. This factors in when creating photo books. I planned to make a large photo book but had to choose a smaller one because the photos were too low resolution to be used as large, full-bleed images spread across a page; images from Facebook couldn&#8217;t be larger than 4-by-6-inches. If the photos imported from Facebook were captured on smartphones, the quality is already lower than that of a digital camera, though smartphone-camera technology is improving steadily. </p>
<p>I checked in with Google&#8217;s Picasa, Kodak Gallery, and Yahoo&#8217;s Flickr services to see if they were considering the idea of importing photos from Facebook. Each of these photo-sharing services already shares its albums out to Facebook—table stakes in the social-networking world. Of the three, only Kodak disclosed imminent plans to import photos from Facebook to its Kodak Gallery website; it will start this in late June. Kodak already lets people use in-store kiosks, like those in Target stores, to import images to albums from Facebook.</p>

The end result is an album book.</div>
<p>Shutterfly&#8217;s <a href="http://www.shutterfly.com/photo-books/custom-path">Custom Path</a> photo-book-making process automatically places photos onto book pages while allowing the book&#8217;s creator to tweak and adjust the book to a high degree. The books come in five options ranging from $13 for a 5-by-5-inch softcover book to $55 for a 12-by-12-inch hardcover book. Prices are currently marked at 20 percent off; adding pages will increase the price. I chose a 20-page, 8-by-8-inch book with a padded photo cover that cost $28 by the time I was finished with it (prices for this size book start at $20). </p>
<p>I skimmed through nine categories of book styles and several options within each category before deciding to create a photo-filled wedding guest book. Photos for the book can be added from one&#8217;s computer, a Shutterfly account, other people&#8217;s shared Shutterfly photos or Facebook. I chose photos from all of these sources and they dropped into a digital bin, showing me what I already had in the book so as not to grab the same photo twice from two sources.</p>
<p>I used Facebook Connect, a one-click option to enable my Shutterfly account to access my Facebook content and that of my friends, but it took me several tries to see the photos from Facebook. Shutterfly couldn&#8217;t replicate my problem and a spokeswoman thought it might be an issue with Facebook. It was fixed later in the day, but photos from Facebook still seemed sluggish to display on the screen.</p>
<p>Custom Path is easy to use but not easy enough. Text boxes are difficult to maneuver, and while some items can be taken away when you press Delete, others must be dragged off the screen. But once I figured out how to customize images and added stickers on pages, I could really make the page my own—not just another cookie-cutter pattern from Shutterfly. </p>
<p>ZangZing is a sharing site with a clean and easy-to-use user interface. It&#8217;s focused on the idea of creating digital albums by getting photos from all sorts of sources, including Facebook, Flickr, Instagram, Kodak Gallery, Picasa Web, Shutterfly, Photobucket, SmugMug or your own PC. I created albums with photos from five sources, and I enjoyed watching the elegant animations that illustrated the step of adding an image to an album. One click will add all photos from an album, or individual ones can be selected, and the images appear in a tray at the bottom of the screen. The site walks users through six steps to build an album, making the procedure feel transparent and uncomplicated. </p>
<p>The simplest part of using ZangZing was setting an album&#8217;s privacy permissions. I selected from Public, Hidden (anyone who knows the link to the album can see it), or Password. Too often, the process of sharing a digital photo album feels nerve-wracking because it&#8217;s hard to know if it will be shared with hundreds of people or too difficult for anyone to view. ZangZing&#8217;s emphasis on clarity shines here and throughout this sharing site. </p>
<p>Thanks to Shutterfly, ZangZing and other sites, creating a book or album to share doesn&#8217;t need to be restricted to your own photos. Rather than putting everything into your social networks, these sites let you take something out. </p>

<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/papayamobile-e1303878953247.jpg" alt="" title="papayamobile" width="150" height="37" class="alignright size-full wp-image-4910" />The round was led by Keytone Ventures of China and DCM, and will be used for expanding in the U.S., Europe and Asia as it tries to build a hub where it connects both game-makers and players on the phone. The company, which is headquartered in Beijing and has offices in Menlo Park, Calif., has built a platform that can host mobile games on behalf of mobile developers who can tap into its social network.</p>
<p>So far, it has attracted 15 million users, and since launching the platform last year, has gained access to 350 applications. Games on the network include Paper Toss and a bunch of branded games, like Papaya Blackjack, Papaya Pet and Papaya Farm.</p>
<p>In a similar vein, Japanese-based Gree acquired San Francisco-based OpenFeint last week for $104 million, plus invested additional capital for growth of the OpenFeint platform. And, last year,<a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110124/ngmocos-ambitions-accelerate-from-game-maker-to-future-entertainment-company/"> Japanese-based DeNA purchased San Francisco-based Ngmoco</a>, which is also working on a mobile social network on Android.</p>

<p>What is limited is the amount of time consumers have to sift through them all. To that end, three Yahoo veterans are trying to de-clutter your inbox and organize all of the offers you may qualify for and package them up in one central location.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-4846" title="Usama Fayyad" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/Usama-Fayyad-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" />The network, which is only available today in a private alpha, is called <a href="http://choozon.com/">ChoozOn</a>. A public beta will be available this summer.</p>
<p>The Bellevue, Wash.-based company is founded by Nick Weir, Usama Fayyad and Hunter Madsen, who all worked together at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Weir, who is ChoozOn&#8217;s CEO, was Yahoo&#8217;s VP of Data Strategy; Madsen, who is the company&#8217;s CMO, established Yahoo&#8217;s product marketing unit of worldwide sales; and Fayyad, who is ChoozOn&#8217;s chairman and CTO, became Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Data Officer and EVP of Research and Strategic Data Solutions after selling his last start-up, DMX Group, to the search giant.</p>
<p>The founders self-funded the business for the first six months, and more recently raised a round from a group of angels. Fayyad&#8217;s not sharing how much the company has raised and declined to name the company&#8217;s investors.</p>
<p>To illustrate the company&#8217;s mission, Fayyad said ChoozOn is building a network that connect brands with customers, similarly to how Facebook connects friends and LinkedIn connects professionals. Think of it as a commerce network.</p>
<p>Through an online portal, consumers will be able to connect to their favorite stores and brands and product categories. They can also connect the service to their various loyalty programs, including airlines and hotels, so it knows all the discounts you may qualify for.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Internet has become a very confusing places for consumers,&#8221; Fayyad said. &#8220;What’s happening is that the consumer is overloaded with the amount of choice available.&#8221;</p>
<p>He said in order to buy anything today, a consumer must spend a half an hour doing research to find the best deal, and if you don&#8217;t, you feel guilty. &#8220;We built something that shows everything you qualify for, and things that are available through your loyalty memberships.&#8221;</p>
<p>There are already other companies cropping up to solve this problem. For instance, Points.com tracks your balances from your various loyalty programs. ChoozOn goes a step further by aggregating more things in one place, and giving consumers the opportunity to search for offers immediately available, or set alerts for upcoming offers of interest, like a trip to the Caribbean, or a new pair of boots.</p>
<p>ChoozOn aspires to aggregate deals from third-parties, but eventually they could create opportunities for brands to target users directly on their platform.</p>
<p>Fayyad said they are hoping to be the trusted partner for consumers, who are constantly being tracked and measured by multiple players. &#8220;This is opt-in. We don’t share the information to the brand, but we enable the brand to target them with relevant offers.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Each morning, the President of the United States gets briefed on the day&#8217;s news by some of the smartest advisers around. The rest of us aren&#8217;t so lucky. We have to sift through newspapers, magazines and websites to find out what&#8217;s going on around us. Now, thanks to a free iPad app called Zite, the news-gathering process may get a lot easier for those of us who aren&#8217;t leaders of the free world.</p>

<p>Zite, by a Vancouver company of the same name, crawls over half a million Web domains to find specific reading material that would be of interest to you, according to your social network and/or online reading behavior. It evaluates this potential content by tracking signals (like tweets, comments, tags and sharing) from stories that indicate a certain level of social interest and momentum in the story. The result is a personalized magazine that gets more accurately targeted toward its reader the more it&#8217;s used. </p>
<p>Wednesday, Zite launched in Apple&#8217;s App Store, and for the past week I&#8217;ve been testing an early version of it. As someone who is regularly overwhelmed by information overload, just on technology news alone, I found Zite to be a huge help. I realized every time I grabbed my iPad, I anxiously checked this app to see what new content it gathered for me. And I found myself reading stories from sources I don&#8217;t usually read. </p>
<p>Zite joins the ranks of other personalized digital magazines, like Silicon Valley-based Flipboard, which came out last July. Flipboard differs in that it takes data from your Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as other topics or people you can manually choose to set up, and builds a personalized digital magazine with this content. </p>
<p>Zite isn&#8217;t just a mirror of your social-networking account. It figures out what you consider interesting according to your Twitter or Google Reader accounts, then fills your magazine with stories about similar topics.</p>
<p>It also tracks and learns from user behavior as people open stories (or don&#8217;t), so if users just read a story on Zite, its personalization still works. With each story a user reads, he or she can opt to indicate they like a story, want to see more of one or all of the individual topics covered in that story, or want to see more from the source of that story. Zite then makes suggestions according to that knowledge. So your Zite magazine will never be exactly like mine.</p>
<p>By now, you&#8217;re probably wondering what Zite does with this knowledge about your reading preferences. Zite CEO Ali Davar says the company won&#8217;t sell user data to third parties, but may use it internally on an anonymous basis for advertising purposes. The company will share aggregate data with publishers (like number of clicks on a story), for ad-placement purposes, but this won&#8217;t include a user&#8217;s individual data. </p>
<p>Flipboard is more polished than Zite, including images that take up the entire iPad screen and clever animations that mimic real pages turning. Zite&#8217;s animations are limited to more straightforward gestures like swiping from right to left to turn to a new page of content, though there is a cool animation on Zite&#8217;s home screen that swings several images from stories onto the magazine&#8217;s first page. Both Zite and Flipboard pull text and images from sources, but Flipboard usually just displays a portion of a story on its digital magazine pages with the original website on which content was found displayed below it. </p>

<p>Zite displays entire stories on its own formatted reading-mode pages, though some stories, like one I read from the New York Times, appeared in the article&#8217;s original Web-page format. Mr. Davar said this is because roughly 3% to 5% of articles are tagged in a way that doesn&#8217;t allow for reformatting in Zite.</p>
<p>There are currently no ads in Zite, but Mr. Davar said the company will begin to put ads from publishers in the reading-mode pages of the magazine in a few months. He said the site may have ads that aren&#8217;t from publishers, but publishers have control regarding ads that appear on their content.</p>
<p>Setting up Zite was a cinch. I entered my Twitter username (not the password) and Zite took a minute to churn and grab content that interested me, setting up sections of my magazine according to topics I follow in Twitter. I didn&#8217;t enter my Google Reader account. Users who don&#8217;t have Twitter or Google Reader accounts can skip those steps and still use Zite by selecting sections of the magazine that interest them.</p>
<p>Upon opening Zite, a section called &#8220;Top Stories&#8221; appears first. This is a compilation of the stories Zite thinks I&#8217;ll find most interesting, and its content refreshes about every 30 minutes depending how often I use Zite. </p>
<p>My auto-generated magazine had a list of topics including Gadgets, Mobile, iPhone, Google, Mac, Social Media and Technology. I tapped a Customize icon to pick some additional sections for my magazine. I could choose from over 2,000 topics ranging from Wedding Photography to Gardening, from Wine &amp; Mixology to Celebrity Gossip &amp; Industry Rumors. A search box lets users look for even more topics, like &#8220;Martha Stewart,&#8221; which I added to my Zite. Topics can&#8217;t be manually added. </p>
<p>I ran into a couple bugs while using my early version of Zite, which Mr. Davar said are being fixed. A Mashable.com article crashed the app four times in a row when I tried to read it. And though videos from major providers like YouTube and Vimeo are watchable in Zite, I had trouble playing a video that used HTML-5 playback.</p>
<p>For now, Zite is limited to Apple&#8217;s iPad, just like Flipboard. Mr. Davar said he plans to get Zite on other tablets by this summer and on mobile devices and Web browsers before the end of this year. </p>
<p>If you&#8217;d like a smarter way to handle information overload, Zite can do the dirty work of amassing relevant content for you. It&#8217;s designed to get more personalized over time and I certainly plan to keep using it to see what it uncovers for me.</p>

<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/yoomeegames-e1297147309189-150x48.jpg" alt="" title="yoomeegames" width="150" height="48" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2527" />Or at least that&#8217;s the hope of <a href="http://yoomeegames.com/">YooMee Games</a>, which is unveiling a new gaming platform today (yes, another one!) that allows developers to add features to their games, like tournament play and one-on-one challenges.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based company&#8217;s founder, Prita Uppal, jokes it is the Chuck E. Cheese of the Internet because of the tickets.</p>
<p>It starts with players placing wagers or buying tokens for a chance to win money and tickets that can be turned in for prizes. &#8220;It’s an arcade. You buy coins and then compete with others in tournaments and get tickets based on the outcome, which can be turned into cash or prizes, based on how many tickets you have.&#8221;</p>
<p>Think skee ball, but with better prizes than Tootsie Rolls.</p>
<p>At the start, YooMee will have more than 30 games to choose from, including popular puzzle games, like Bubble Town and Cube Crasher, and word games like WordStone. Prizes include Amazon gift cards, digital cameras and other gadgets.</p>
<p>Uppal said the company is not a casino and people are not gambling on the site, because the games are skill-based and not based on chance. &#8220;It’s completely skill-based competition. It’s legal. All the casual games you see and play on the Web are skill games&#8211;so you can wager and compete and earn money.&#8221;</p>
<p><img src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/yoomee_game-play-275x231.jpg" alt="" title="yoomee_game-play" width="275" height="231" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2528" />Still, the business model is complex, having to optimize winnings for the player while also distributing money back to the developer and keeping some for itself.</p>
<p>Users don&#8217;t have to pay to play&#8211;instead they can play for free and view ads, such as a video pre-roll. That business is doing well, and allowed the 22-employee company to reach profitability in October.</p>
<p>Uppal says YouMee isn&#8217;t competing against other companies that are providing developers other services, such as leaderboards, comments or rankings. Rather, it can be used in addition to those services. It also uses Facebook Connect, so friends can easily find one another from their regular social network.</p>
<p>Commonly, a player will be introduced to the &#8220;arcade concept,&#8221; which Uppal is also &#8220;calling social competition,&#8221; after playing one of the games. A message will appear that says something like, &#8220;If you had paid 50 cents, you would have made $10 with this score. Do you want to enter this competition?&#8221;</p>
<p>In founding the company, Uppal placed a few good bets of her own.</p>
<p>She met her first VCs on the ski-lift chair in Park City, Utah. Directly from the ski slopes, U.S. Venture Partners flew her to Silicon Valley&#8211;she was without a computer and practically still wearing her ski boots&#8211;to give a 45-minute presentation. She had a term sheet two days later.</p>
<p>And she found her second VC after seeing a psychic, who predicted that the letter &#8220;A&#8221; and foreign money were going to be really important. That led her to take meetings with Altos Ventures, which has roots in Asia. &#8220;I wouldn’t have ever spoken to them if it weren’t for the psychic.&#8221;</p>

<p>Indeed, people do seem to be separating their online professional identities from their personal identities more than they used to, now that the tools are available. Web users increasingly use LinkedIn to sign in to business-oriented sites, according to the social toolmaker <a href="http://www.gigya.com/">Gigya</a>.</p>
<p>LinkedIn started offering its credentials as a Web sign-on system early last year, and many business-oriented sites now offer users the option of authenticating using their LinkedIn account in addition to other options like their Twitter and Facebook accounts.</p>
<p>Gigya has seen a major increase in LinkedIn log-ins to sites it identifies as business-to-business. Twenty percent of social logins on such sites used LinkedIn credentials in January 2011, up from three percent in July 2010.</p>
<p>LinkedIn accounted for 26.6 percent of social sign-ons in January on the stock market news site Seeking Alpha, 20 percent on the Harvard Business Review and 14 percent on the Internet Advertising Bureau site. (The rest of social sign-ons were through Facebook and Twitter, mostly.)</p>
<p>To be sure, LinkedIn is still a minority share of social sign-ons on such sites, and these numbers don&#8217;t include users who register for a site without the help of a social network, or users who visit without registering.</p>
<p>Plus, the trend may be headed in the other direction. Many people propose that our personal and professional identities will increasingly merge, especially for younger generations. That&#8217;s the theory behind the legion of <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110104/holy-start-up-pileup-social-networking-gets-professional/">LinkedIn 2.0 start-ups</a> like BranchOut and Assetmap.</p>
<p>LinkedIn is the first major U.S. social networking site to file for an IPO. It <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110127/linkedins-ipo-filing-is-out/">hopes to raise</a> $175 million.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s the flip side to News Corp.&#8217;s digital optimism: The company has taken a $275 million charge on Myspace and its related Web businesses, it disclosed in today&#8217;s quarterly <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1308161/000119312511021842/dex991.htm">earnings report</a>.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s the formal language: &#8220;The Company recorded a $275 million pre-tax charge for the impairment of goodwill related to the Digital Media Group and an organizational restructuring at MySpace.&#8221;</p>
<p>Translation: <em>Firing people en masse, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110110/myspace-plans-to-lay-off-550-to-600-employees-tomorrow/">as we did at Myspace last quarter</a>, is expensive. Also, we&#8217;re writing down a lot of the social networking company&#8217;s remaining value.</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked News Corp. (which also owns this Web site) for more clarity on the charge: How much of it stems from layoffs? How much of it comes from a writedown on Myspace&#8217;s value? And were any other assets involved? At this point the company&#8217;s Digital Media Group is pretty much just Myspace, but it does have other stuff there, most notably its IGN site.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that during today&#8217;s unveiling of the Daily, the company&#8217;s iPad newspaper, CEO Rupert Murdoch said that the company had already written down the first $30 million it had invested in the project. So it&#8217;s entirely possible that that figure is part of the $275 million.</p>

<p><strong>UPDATE</strong>: For the record, News Corp.&#8217;s $275 million charge on its digital operations, announced today, breaks down this way: $107 million of that is for restructuring, and the remaining $168 million is a writedown, presumably focused on Myspace.</p>
<p>And for those who care&#8211;costs for the Daily are being assigned to News Corp.&#8217;s publishing group: $7 million of the $30 million it has spent so far were assigned to this quarter.</p>

<p>Evidently the same is not true of Facebook.  &#8220;[Facebook has] clearly stated they don&#8217;t want to get into  the search business,&#8221; Schmidt continued. &#8220;Facebook users tend to use Google search. Facebook&#8217;s ads business does not displace our advertising. I&#8217;m somewhat perplexed by the obsession because I don&#8217;t think the facts support it. Things are going great for Google&#8230;.<a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/google/8287197/Davos-WEF-2011-Eric-Schmidt-role-change-at-Google-not-to-do-with-Facebook-competition.html">Facebook usage is a net positive for us.</a>&#8220;</p>
<p>Of course this being Eric &#8220;<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20070802/google-phone/">false denial</a>&#8221; Schmidt we&#8217;re talking about, this could be the best evidence yet that Google really is worried about Facebook.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As more and more services tap into location-based data, consumers need to take steps to make sure they are aware just how broadly they are sharing that information.</p>
<p>That was one of several points stressed by Microsoft Chief Privacy Officer Brendon Lynch, who sat down with Mobilized ahead of his <a href="http://www.churchillclub.org/eventDetail.jsp?EVT_ID=890">appearance at a Churchill Club event Wednesday night</a> focused on location-based services.<br />

Among the company&#8217;s recommendations is that consumers think twice before taking actions such as broadcasting their location when they are alone or sharing geo-tagged photos of their home or children.</p>
<p>Microsoft did some research in December that found that three in five consumers are aware of location-based services and roughly half say they have used such a service, with one in 10 of those surveyed saying they use such services on a daily basis.</p>
<p>While the most common reported usages were for things like navigation, traffic and weather, about 18 percent of respondents said they were using a service like Foursquare, Facebook or Google Latitude that broadcasts their location.</p>
<p>The software maker is releasing the results later on Wednesday ahead of Friday&#8217;s commemoration of <a href="http://dataprivacyday2011.org/">Data Privacy Day</a>. This year, the company decided to focus its efforts on location-based services.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is a high-stakes, high-value data element,&#8221; Lynch said.</p>
<p>Lynch also noted that people sharing location with their social network might want to review just how wide that network is.</p>
<p>&#8220;I actually believe [sharing of] location data is a situation which probably should cause people to really go review that list,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>And while there is a responsibility on consumers to be more aware, Lynch said, those building services and products also need to do their part.</p>
<p>&#8220;You can build it into the experience to actually make people aware that this is going to happen and they have a role to play in the choice,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Microsoft&#8217;s research found that privacy concerns are a barrier for some to adopting location-based services, particularly in the U.S. About half of overall survey respondents said they would be more comfortable with such services if they had more information on just who was seeing the information being shared.</p>
<p>The company also found that while 94 percent of consumers find location-based services to be valuable, they weren&#8217;t terribly willing to pay, and those who were often weren&#8217;t willing to pay more than $10 for such services. That seems to indicate more promise for advertising-funded services, especially since nearly half of those who have seen a location-based mobile ad have taken action on the ad&#8211;vastly higher than the response rates seen on traditional online ads.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Myspace, which has been struggling to revitalize itself, is expected to lay off 550 to 600 of its staff of just over 1,000 tomorrow, according to several sources.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-1824" title="myspace-logo-Bracket-275x57" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/myspace-logo-Bracket-275x57.jpg" alt="" width="193" height="40" /></p>
<p>NetworkEffect <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101231/myspace-mulls-significant-layoffs-with-potential-sale-looming/">first reported news of the large-scale cuts</a> at the end of December.</p>
<p>But now, the social-network-turned-entertainment-hub has set a date&#8211;January 11&#8211;and is working on finalizing the people it will let go, which will likely include a significant number of international employees.</p>
<p>The Beverly Hills, Calif.-based company will be touting the changes as a restructuring to shed &#8220;legacy&#8221; businesses and products.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, the context for that rationale is that Myspace is shedding a full half of its staff.</p>
<p>After the layoffs, the News Corp.-owned Myspace will turn its sights to sale options, as I also reported.</p>
<p>The company is primarily being shopped to private-equity buyers, although one intriguing possibility currently being raised within News Corp. is to try to sell Myspace to Yahoo.</p>
<p>Internally, Myspace staffers have been expecting layoffs in early January for some time, with the numbers circulating being as high as 70 percent of the company&#8217;s staff.</p>

Now Dick Costolo&#8217;s job is to turn it into a business&#8211;one big enough to justify the sky-high valuation investors have given the messaging company.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll talk to Kara Swisher about the company&#8217;s efforts to sell advertising on the service, and if we&#8217;re lucky, he&#8217;ll give us a glimpse of his improv comedy roots, too. Don&#8217;t be shy, Dick!</p>
<p>Dick starts off by insulting Kara&#8217;s vest. &#8220;Matador casual,&#8221; he calls it. Good one! Kara responds by asking him why he&#8217;s hanging out at CES.</p>

<p>The same reason everyone else is, Dick says: To talk to industry people. For example, he&#8217;d like to get device makers to preload some features like &#8220;Fast Follow.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara wants to know if Dick would like a &#8220;Twitter button&#8221; installed on phones. No, says Dick. But he&#8217;d like Twitter to work the same way on different platforms.</p>
<p>So how do you make that happen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re assigning a product team to make sure that this happens.</p>
<p>Kara: And you&#8217;re talking to TV people, too? What&#8217;s that about?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Because mainstream TV viewing, more and more, they have a device in their hand when they&#8217;re watching TV. Like on &#8220;Glee.&#8221; The characters tweet while the show is on. [This baffles Kara.] When &#8220;Glee&#8221; starts, tweets per second for &#8220;Glee&#8221; shoot up, and stay up 100 times that level until the show ends, and then they drop.</p>
<p>That has interesting implications. Like, it takes the DVR out of the mix, because you have to watch in real time to make it worthwhile.</p>

<p>But we don&#8217;t know if all of this means Twitter while you watch TV, or Twitter actually on your TV screen.</p>
<p>Kara: Is it important for you to be on the screen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re already on the screen. But we don&#8217;t know if that will be the mainstream experience.</p>
<p>Kara: We had Steve Levitan from &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; talking about how the Web doesn&#8217;t help him, but that he and his team like Twitter.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! &#8220;I was having a conversation with Conan O&#8217;Brien, as one does&#8221; and he was talking about the importance of Twitter to him, and how the 140 character limit is the right length for a joke. It&#8217;s definitely the case that network TV people like Twitter, because it gives them feedback, like they&#8217;re in the theater, watching how the shows play out.</p>
<p>Kara: Keep talking about celebrities! I love celebrities.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! The folks that we&#8217;ve hired to work with talent and agencies, etc., we think of those people has high-value publishers. They have a huge following. A lot of people are on Twitter just to hear what those folks have to say.</p>

<p>The interesting thing about the top 200 to 300 tweeters&#8211;a lot of them are musicians, actors, etc. LeBron James, etc. I think Lady Gaga is number one. But! They&#8217;re not <em>all</em> celebrities. There&#8217;s CNN Breaking News. And the New York Times. And other brands like Gary Vaynerchuk, who aren&#8217;t really that known outside that world.</p>
<p>And Twitter is disaggregating some of those businesses. Like a third of all the players in the NFL playoffs are using Twitter actively. And many players have more followers than their teams. [Here Dick explains football to Kara.] That&#8217;s fascinating.</p>
<p>Kara: Let&#8217;s go back to phones. Whats the most important device? Tablet? PC? Phone?</p>
<p>Dick: Mobile is a more and more and more common use of Twitter&#8211;40 percent of all tweets created on mobile devices. That might seem low, but it was 25 percent a year ago. 50 percent of active users are also active on mobile.</p>
<p>But Twitter ought to work platform to platform. We want to be agnostic.</p>
<p>Kara: What about what&#8217;s coming out from Palm? Working with them?</p>
<p>Dick: Not yet.</p>
<p>Kara: What about games? Talking to those guys?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Like with Microsoft on their Xbox, you can see integrating tweets into people who have discussions on Xbox.</p>
<p>Dick: You lost interest in the answer to your question. [True!]</p>
<p>Kara: You&#8217;re so annoying.</p>
<p>[Some laughter. Not a lot, though!]</p>
<p>Dick: Anyway, the important thing for us is consistency across device to device to device.</p>
<p>Kara: Speaking of working consistently, how&#8217;s that going for Twitter?</p>
<p>Dick: Right. So, we raised a bunch of money. We&#8217;re hiring &#8220;tons of engineers and operations engineers&#8221; in the last year. We hired 100 people in Q4, out of about 350 total. And we&#8217;re working very hard on erasing our &#8220;technical debt.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: &#8220;That&#8217;s a great word for fuck-ups&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick: Anyway, we&#8217;ve got a guy assigned to this pretty much exclusively. And there used to be a tolerance for this, and now there isn&#8217;t. If someone fires a pistol next to your ear every hour, after a while you stop flinching when you hear it. It&#8217;s crucial that we do this, both for our users and our engineers, who shouldn&#8217;t have to get up at 3 am all the time.</p>
<p>Kara: Time for a vision question, which stumps Yahoo. What is Twitter? What is your vision?</p>
<p>Dick: &#8220;We want to instantly connect people everywhere to what&#8217;s most important to them.&#8221;</p>
<p>See, that&#8217;s a good statement. We&#8217;re not just a social network that&#8217;s connecting people. It&#8217;s connecting for a purpose.</p>
<p>So some people meet girlfriends on Twitter. And other people get tickets to shows they like on Twitter. Etc.</p>
<p>And you don&#8217;t have to tweet to get a lot of value out of it.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s the percentage of people who just read Twitter, and don&#8217;t tweet themselves?</p>
<p>Dick: Rising. And we have to make that easier to do. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to spend a lot of time making that consumption experience much better.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s your business plan?</p>
<p>Dick: To continue to raise money!</p>

<p>Dick: I&#8217;m going to steal Jeff Weiner&#8217;s line. We&#8217;re a technology company that&#8217;s in the media business. Our business model is an advertising model [cough, cough, that's familiar! You're welcome!] So we&#8217;re selling ads, and we&#8217;re letting people promote their accounts, etc. And we really don&#8217;t have to do anything else. Our engagement rates on these ads are ridiculously high. When we saw our stats this last spring when we launched, the numbers were so big we thought we were measuring it incorrectly.</p>
<p>Kara: Is that a big enough business to be a standalone company and/or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: It&#8217;s enough to be a standalone company.</p>
<p>Kara: Sell or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: We want to be a standalone company. It&#8217;s my sincere hope. We&#8217;ve accomplished 1 percent of what we want to do.</p>

<p>Kara: You like to sell companies, though.</p>
<p>Dick. Yes, I had two companies that I sold. But that doesn&#8217;t mean we&#8217;ll sell this one. I&#8217;ve had two kids too. But I shouldn&#8217;t get a reputation for having kids.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s up with people buying and selling secondary shares of Twitter. It&#8217;s an issue for Facebook. What about you?</p>
<p>Dick: We keep an eye on it, and talk to employees about it. But I just think that there are other people that are focusing on it and paying attention, and I&#8217;ll let them talk about it. But I just don&#8217;t think about that stuff on a day-to-day basis.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>
<p><strong>Q: [sorry missed it].</strong></p>
<p>But answer seems to be about whether Twitter is a platform company or not. Dick quotes Ev Williams by saying they&#8217;re not a platform company&#8211;they&#8217;ve had an API. They want people to be able build off Twitter and build into Twitter. Which requires a more robust API.</p>
<p>Kara has more questions. How do you look at yourself as a leader?</p>
<p>Dick: As a very bald leader.</p>
<p>Kara: But you&#8217;re very different than Evan.</p>
<p>Dick: Right. Two components. Three founders at company: Ev, Jack, Biz. They all come at it from a different angle. Jack thinks about simplicity and elegance and the mobile experience. Ev thinks about the user. Biz is &#8220;the protector of the brand and the guardian of the culture.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: He&#8217;e the guy who goes on Colbert.</p>
<p>Dick: And he&#8217;s great at it. Anyway, those guys are great. My focus is on operational greatness. I try to emulate operators like Ben Horowitz (Opsware) and Susan Wojcicki (Google).</p>

<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s up with that internal page rank for each user? asks Ben Parr from Mashable.</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Your&#8217;re not exactly right. We play around with stuff like that. But there&#8217;s nothing robust that we would think of productizing anytime soon, and we don&#8217;t use it for things like resonance, which we use in ads.</p>
<p><strong>Q: [Sorry, couldnt quite understand.]</strong></p>
<p>Dick is talking about WikiLeaks in general, says there was something specific about WikiLeaks today that he can’t talk about. In general, he hates government mandates to keep things quiet. And he hates that a woman in China was punished for retweeting something. He reiterates Twitter&#8217;s desire to connect people with useful information. “We’re going to lash out at things that prevent us from doing that, as aggressively as we can.” The proof is that we’re banned in China. “We’re not going to sacrifice what we’re trying to do to, you know, get into this country over here.”</p>

<p><strong>Q: How will you work with brands in the future, vs. advertising?</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Our promoted suite of stuff doesn&#8217;t simply let advertisers use a giant bullhorn. This stuff has to be organic. &#8220;It almost is like a quality-assurance program.&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick is now talking about Twitter and international growth and language. Twitter is growing fast in the U.K. but not in Germany. Why is that? Because German has really, really long words. &#8220;There&#8217;s a bunch of stuff we want to do, and have to do&#8221; just to make things usable in those languages.</p>
<p><strong>Last question, from Kara: What&#8217;s the most interesting thing you&#8217;ve seen at CES?</strong></p>
<p>Dick won&#8217;t give a one-word answer. CES is a &#8220;quantum conference.&#8221; Some years are transformational, some are incremental. &#8220;This seems like it was an incremental year.&#8221;</p>

<p>The company, which has made a big push into Facebook games in the last six months, says it will use the new money to develop more games for the social network, as well as for Apple&#8217;s iPhone and Google&#8217;s Android platform.</p>
<p>The new money brings OMGPOP&#8217;s total funding to $16.6 million over its four-year history.</p>

<p>However, even with the masses descending upon Las Vegas this week, Cricket has decided to delay the Muve music service and the launch of its first Muve-compatible phone.<br />

Cricket had hoped to launch service in Las Vegas this week along with a number of other markets later this month.</p>
<p>Under its revised time frame, Cricket plans to launch the service in Las Vegas later this month, add nine more cities in February and roll it out to the rest of its markets this spring.</p>
<p>Although all the necessary licensing is in place, Cricket spokesman Greg Lund said that the company needed the extra time to ensure all of the software bugs were ironed out before it started asking customers to pay for the service.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s got to be just perfect,&#8221; Lund told Mobilized in an interview at CES in Las Vegas.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Bundling a music subscription into other goods and services has been tried a lot, mostly without success. However, Cricket Wireless is hoping to succeed where others have failed.</p>
<p>The company, best known for its prepaid phones, is offering a new service called Muve Music, which includes the cost of unlimited music downloads as part of a $55 monthly cellphone plan that also includes unlimited talk, text and Web. Basically, Muve adds about $10 to the cost of the monthly cellphone tab (which, incidentally, is about what one can expect to pay for the typical subscription music service).</p>

<p>The music is downloaded directly to the cellphone and is accessible as long as you remain a subscriber. From a technology standpoint, the service works by transferring the music to a secure partition of a 4GB digital memory card in the phone; Cricket says that partition can hold about 3,000 songs.</p>
<p>Cricket is launching the service next month with a single compatible phone&#8211;a color touchscreen feature phone known as the Samsung Suede, which will sell for $199. The service will first be available Jan. 6 in Las Vegas, with about 10 of Cricket&#8217;s other markets due to come on board later in the month.</p>
<p>What makes the service interesting is the approach&#8211;there is no tie to a PC whatsoever. Music comes to the phone, lives on the phone and is managed on the phone. In an interview, Cricket Vice President Jeff Toig said the service is geared to Cricket&#8217;s base of customers, many of whom don&#8217;t have a PC and broadband connection. It also allows them to get their music the way they do their other cellphone services&#8211;by paying in cash at the company&#8217;s retail outlets, thereby eliminating the need for a credit card.</p>
<p>The downside, of course, is that the music can only be played on the phone, though the phone can connect to a car stereo or external speakers over bluetooth or via a 3.5mm cable.</p>
<p>On the plus side, Muve doesn&#8217;t add much to the cost of a cellphone plan and eliminates some of the complexity traditionally associated with digital music. In addition to the ability to download and play tracks from all four major music labels, Muve subscribers can set any track to be either a ringtone or ringback tone (the music heard by callers while they are waiting for someone to answer). </p>
<p>Nokia tried a somewhat similar approach <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10055680-1.html">with its &#8220;Comes With Music&#8221; phones</a>, which debuted in 2008. In that program, the cost of the music subscription was included in the price of the phone rather than in the monthly cellphone bill. Others, such as SpiralFrog, have tried to create services relying on advertising to subsidize the cost of providing music free to the end user.</p>
<p>Toig said that his customer base is one that typically isn&#8217;t downloading music from iTunes at 99 cents a pop, but includes a fair number of people that illegally download music from file sharing services.</p>
<p>The new service, he said, allows them to have a better experience without having to spend much more than they already are, while giving the record industry a chance to reach digital music customers they are largely missing out on today.</p>
<p>Unlike other services, which Toig said bank on the fact that people have access to a computer, Muve tries to make it easy to discover and download music directly from the phone. Customers can subscribe to curated feeds of music that get automatically updated, as well as find and download albums by name. A built-in social network allows them to see what their friends are listening to (assuming they also have a Muve-compatible phone).</p>
<p>&#8220;Nobody has done mobile music right,&#8221; Toig said.</p>
<p>Cricket won&#8217;t say how much of the incremental $10 in monthly revenue it is getting goes to the labels, but Toig said part of the bet is that Cricket will be able to reach customers that it otherwise could not.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously not doing this for a few percent,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We think this has appeal beyond our base to segments Cricket has not appealed to before.&#8221;</p>

<p>Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s company is working hard to win over heavyweight content distributors, hoping to convince them to link their sites up with Facebook, or to make their existing links deeper. The pitch: <em>Connect your site to ours, and we&#8217;ll drive you eyeballs and help you hang on to them. And in return, we&#8217;d like to know more about your users.<br />
</em><br />
Facebook has been headed in this direction for a while, and made a big move in April <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=383404517130">when it rolled out its &#8220;Like&#8221; button to outside sites</a>. Some two million of them have now integrated the social network in some form.</p>
<p>But Facebook has made a point of wooing big media companies in the past few months. It has hired New York-based ambassadors specifically for the task, and is sending top executives out east for schmoozes. It might be working.</p>
<p>For instance: Facebook and Time Warner are now talking about using the social network&#8217;s login system to &#8220;authenticate&#8221; cable subscribers who want to watch online video from cable channels like TBS and HBO. Sources familiar with the companies&#8217; plans say they are in early stages, but that the two companies are hoping to link up first with Verizon&#8217;s FiOS TV  service.</p>
<p>The upside for Time Warner and Verizon: It will be easy for customers to sign into Web video sites, and easy for them to tell their Facebook friends what they&#8217;re doing. That can drive more traffic and engagement, and ultimately more ad dollars or more subscribers.</p>
<p>And the upside for Facebook: It gets incredibly valuable data.</p>
<p>If that linkup goes through, it will be a big deal for pay TV operators, who have been wary about  letting outsiders act as gatekeepers between their subscribers and their content. That&#8217;s why Facebook and Time Warner want to  work with Verizon, a newcomer to the TV business, instead of established cable giants like Comcast.</p>
<p>The proposed Time Warner-Facebook linkup is a good example of what Facebook is trying to accomplish across the board. It wants to insert itself between media companies and their consumers&#8211;with &#8220;Share&#8221; buttons, &#8220;Like&#8221; buttons and Facebook Connect logins&#8211;but in a way that makes both groups happy about the arrangement.</p>
<p><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/sheryl-sandberg.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-27116" title="sheryl sandberg" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/sheryl-sandberg.jpg" alt="" width="165" height="200" /></a>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Dan Rose, the company&#8217;s VP of partnerships, made a version of that pitch to senior Time Warner executives in a meeting last week. The pair also hosted a presentation and dinner for about 20 other big Web publishers, including executives from ESPN, the New York Times, Cond&eacute; Nast, CBS and at least one media celebrity. &#8220;Tina Brown was actually there, which I thought was sort of hilarious,&#8221; says one attendee.</p>
<p>Facebook has also hired two New York-based executives tasked specifically with getting big media companies on board: Andy Mitchell, previously a VP of business development at the Daily Beast, and Nick Grudin, who held the same title at Newsweek.</p>
<p>Executives who&#8217;ve attended the meetings say media companies seem reasonably receptive to Facebook&#8217;s approach. In part, it seems, it&#8217;s because the company isn&#8217;t Apple or Google, two heavyweights that can make Web publishers wary.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook doesn&#8217;t attest to be perfect about being perfectly transparent about where they&#8217;re going. But they&#8217;re pretty predictable,&#8221; says one meeting participant. &#8220;It&#8217;s not like Apple, where they&#8217;re closed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Add another: &#8220;It  was very friendly. It wasn&#8217;t like meetings we&#8217;ve had with Google, where everyone&#8217;s arms are crossed.&#8221;</p>
<p>But publishers are also realistic&#8211;they realize by trading user data for traffic and engagement, they&#8217;re helping to build up a company that is already competing with them for ad dollars. &#8220;In the end, they&#8217;re like the other big guys,&#8221; says another attendee. &#8220;They&#8217;re both friend and foe simultaneously.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/hackers-193x300.jpg" alt="" title="hackers" width="193" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-605" />It still remains unclear whether the password-jacking of McDonald&#8217;s Web site that was revealed Monday was in fact related to what we here at <strong>All Things D</strong> are now calling <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101214/the-gawker-hack-ripple-hits-linkedin/">Gawkergate</a>. Though as I noted yesterday, the timing was <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20101214/gawker-password-mess-spreads-to-world-or-warcraft-apparently-yaho/">certainly suspicious</a>.</p>
<p>However, we&#8217;re starting to get more information about how the McDonald&#8217;s incident appears connected to hacking incidents at other sites. <a href="http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20101213/NEWS07/101219975/mcdonalds-says-hacker-broke-into-customer-database-fbi-investigating">Chicago Business</a> is reporting that the company responsible for McDonald&#8217;s email marketing is <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/marketing-company/company-overview.html">Silverpop Systems</a>, and that it had been operating under a subcontract from Chicago-based Arc Worldwide.</p>
<p>So who else is a customer of Silverpop? Yesterday I received an email from someone who&#8217;s a customer of <a href="http://about.deviantart.com/">deviantArt</a>, a social network where artists share their creations. DeviantArt has a base of 13 million users. Got an account there? You&#8217;d better change any passwords that overlap with other sites. The site advised customers that their accounts were compromised, and blamed Silverpop.</p>
<p>It could extend much further yet. Silverpop has more than 100 clients, and not all of them are publicly disclosed, though here are a few, found on its <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/clients/client-quotes.html">client quotes</a> page and its <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/marketing-resources/case-studies/index.html">case studies</a> page: Stamps.com, Pitney Bowes/Mapinfo, Encyclopedia Britannica, Santander Consumer Finance and watchmaker Fossil. There&#8217;s no word how any of those other companies are affected, if at all.</p>
<p>Silverpop CEO Bill Nussey said in a blog message to customers that the FBI is <a href="http://www.silverpop.com/blogs/email-marketing/uncategorized/a-special-message-from-silverpop.html">investigating the incident</a>, and that only a small percentage of Silverpop customers have been affected. He also said that Silverpop was &#8220;among several technology providers targeted as part of a broader cyber attack.&#8221; Stacy Kirk, a Silverpop spokeswoman, wouldn&#8217;t say anything beyond what&#8217;s in Nussey&#8217;s message.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m beginning to wonder if there&#8217;s some indirect connection between what happened to Silverpop and what happened to Gawker. I&#8217;m speculating here, but it&#8217;s no stretch of the imagination that numbering among deviantArt&#8217;s 13 million users are some of the 1.5 million people whose accounts were compromised in the Gawkergate affair. And the FBI is <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/news/business/fbi_investigating_gawker_hacking_8d96mcgcFbgMVhw8Ge3rpJ">investigating both</a>. Thomas Plunkett, Gawker&#8217;s technology chief, told me by email that there&#8217;s no evidence of a connection. Then again, as Business Insider tells it, he hasn&#8217;t yet had his <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fbi-meeting-with-gawker-tomorrow-2010-12">meeting with the FBI</a>.</p>
<p>Maybe I&#8217;m looking for connections that aren&#8217;t really there, but it&#8217;s really not hard to see how the breach at Gawker could turn out be the start of a domino effect that&#8217;s much larger than anyone has yet realized. There certainly is a lot of  grumbling about <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%22changing+passwords%22">changing passwords</a> today.</p>

<p>The likely result of this event might be an increase in spam to your email. Experts have told us that there is an increase in email scams out there on the Internet and you should be cautious. Only click links or download attachments from people you know, particularly if they ask for personal information, and be sure that your email service provider has adequate spam filters.</p>
<p>Because we value the information that members give us, we have decided not to rely on the services of Silverpop in the future and their servers will no longer hold any data from us.</p></blockquote>
