Yahoo Focuses on Tentpole Events With New Head

At least one thing in yesterday’s lackluster first-quarter earnings report for Yahoo that got its Microsoft-search-bashing CEO Carol Bartz excited was the Silicon Valley Internet giant’s traffic gusher for big tentpole events such as the Super Bowl and the Oscars. There will be more of that, it seems, with the elevation of Yahoo exec Sam Silverstein as head of its special events coverage. Sources said it will be a major area of emphasis, given obvious advertiser interest.

Waiting for Godot: Apple's Fall Event Is Definitely Happening, but Exactly When and What?

Oh, it’s coming. According to several sources, and as has been widely expected, Apple will once again be holding its annual autumn special event, possibly closer to mid-September this time. Apple, which has had a fall hello-there confab every year since 2005, waited until August 31 last year to announce its “Let’s Rock” event on September 9 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Likely on the agenda this year: Blinging the iPod.

Peter Griffin’s father-in-law asked Bill Gates to help him program his Zune and then taunted the Microsoft chairman, noting that he owns an iPod “like the rest of the world.” This time it’s going to be different. That’s because Microsoft is paying to make it so. The company has teamed up with Fox to sponsor a “Family Guy” special built around Windows 7.

AT&T Workers Create “Ready to Strike” Ringtone

AT&T and the union representing its workers are still in contract talks, but workers have published a song, with accompanying ringtone, called “Ready to Strike,” just in case. The song’s pro-labor lyrics include “Get ready to strike, get ready to walk the line” and “Protect my health care, don’t lower my wages/Realize, recognize, mobilize, stay alive” and even a shout-out to technicians who support U-verse, AT&T’s TV service.
