<p>Because this is a big CEO search in Silicon Valley, naturally the Hewlett-Packard board turned to star headhunter Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart for help in finding the next leader for the tech giant.</p>
<p>He should not have to look far, since sources close to the situation said it is likely an internal candidate will be chosen over a more high-profile outsider.</p>
<p>The reason? As Maverick&#8217;s motto in the hit movie &#8220;Top Gun&#8221; goes: The need for speed.</p>
<p>As in speed at moving the focus at HP (HPQ) away from the scandal around the controversial departure of CEO Mark Hurd, his <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100917/please-hurd-dont-hammer-em/">move to rival Oracle</a> (ORCL) and the ensuing lawsuits, and back to the business of, well, business.</p>
<p>That would be best served by putting in place someone who knows the company well. And since the major divisions of HP are so huge that they could be considered companies unto themselves, these are very seasoned and experienced execs.</p>
<p>At the tippy-top of that list is Todd Bradley, who runs its Personal Systems Group and is also known as the man who bought Palm, the smartphone maker, which he once ran. (He is pictured above, headed for work on the 101.)</p>
<p>While making Palm&#8217;s technology a success for HP is a big risk, the move shows a nice proclivity for boldness. In addition, he is well known and well liked in Silicon Valley, even though he always deftly sidles away from BoomTown whenever I approach (which is, to be honest, also a very good instinct).</p>
<p>Also on the very short list, although much less mentioned than Bradley: Vyomesh Joshi, who runs HP&#8217;s giant printer business.</p>
<p>One minus: Joshi&#8211;an incredibly affable man known as VJ&#8211;has also been a longtime director on the worser-board-than-HP at Yahoo (YHOO). So, in my mind, he&#8217;d have some&#8211;in the immortal words of Ricky Ricardo&#8211;<em>&#8217;splaining</em> to do.</p>
<p>And while Ann Livermore, who runs the enterprise business, has been mentioned many times in the past for a bigger role at HP, she remains, most sources say, a longshot. Here it&#8217;s kind of like that old Oscar clich&eacute;&#8211;being nominated is the real honor.</p>
<p>Of course, there are plenty of outsiders who are certainly solid selections and some wilder ideas the board could consider&#8211;my pick would be Google (GOOG) President of Global Sales Operations and Business Development Nikesh Arora or Juniper (JNPR) CEO Kevin Johnson.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s clear an internal candidate would settle the waters sooner than later.</p>
<p>And, despite internal rivalry, it would also prevent an exodus of these execs, which is the last thing HP needs right now.</p>

<p>Yahoo announced today that it was restructuring its advertising sales force, after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100706/help-wanted-so-when-is-yahoo-going-to-hire-a-new-head-of-ad-sales">being without a head of its key U.S. unit since mid-March</a>.</p>
<p>Big news: No new top ad sales exec.</p>
<p>Instead, several North American sales execs with larger portfolios will report directly to Hilary Schneider, who is in charge of the Americas for Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>&#8220;This elevates the strong talent and brings a broader set of voices one step higher in the organization,&#8221; said Schneider in an interview today. &#8220;The marketplace is changing rapidly and bringing complete solutions is really the mantra of where the market is going.&#8221;</p>
<p>This move is a shift from the direction Yahoo had been heading in since <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford stepped down</a> as head of U.S. revenue and market development for Yahoo in mid-March.</p>
<p>Schneider had been leading the search for an external replacement for Bradford, using star headhunter Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart.</p>
<p>The company apparently was unable to land the kind of prominent name Yahoo had been seeking for the job, after trying to attract several well-known candidates and rejecting others.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our leadership in sales is the strongest to date,&#8221; said Schneider, explaining the new structure for its ad sales force. &#8220;I have kissed a lot of frogs over the years, but it turned out the Prince Charmings we always needed were back at the ranch.&#8221;</p>
<p>(Frogs? Prince Charmings? <em>On a ranch?</em> Block that metaphor, although BoomTown will go along anyway!)</p>
<p>&#8220;Each of our leaders has strong relationships with advertisers and they know and trust each other,&#8221; said Schneider. &#8220;I will be consolidating the operational hub and directly managing it this time.&#8221;</p>
<p>Among the changes:</p>
<p>Mitch Spolan, the 11-year Yahoo veteran who is in charge of North American field sales, will also pick up responsibility for agency development and relationships.</p>
<p>Seth Dallaire, who has been running mid-market sales, will now be in charge of channel sales, reseller relationships and new and emerging formats, such as video, local, social and mobile.</p>
<p>Frank Weishaupt, who has been in charge of marketplaces, will add sales operations and training and sales development to his portfolio.</p>
<p>Lastly, Jim Stothard, who has been in charge of account management, will be leaving Yahoo for personal reasons, but will be working with Schneider to find his replacement.</p>
<p>Schneider said the new sales structure will eliminate a layer of management to better focus on improving advertising sales</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important, due to Yahoo&#8217;s recent quarterly earnings report, in which it <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/liveblogging-yahoos-second-quarter-earnings-call-how-do-you-solve-a-problem-like-flat-revenue">posted flat revenue compared to last year</a>, despite a recovery of the display advertising market.</p>
<p>Display is an area in which Yahoo (YHOO) has long dominated, although Google (GOOG) and others have stepped up competitive efforts aggressively.</p>
<p>So, the slowness in filling the company&#8217;s key sales position has had a lot of people inside Yahoo a little jumpy, because of the importance of firm leadership in the premium display online ad business in which the Internet giant needs to keep excelling.</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT) recently hired one of the people Yahoo had considered&#8211;former MTV Networks ad exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100603/microsoft-u-s-ad-sales-vp-domeniconi-to-depart-while-exec-from-mtv-arrives-to-run-global-online-sales">Carolyn Everson</a>&#8211;for its head of sales.</p>
<p>With Everson and others not panning out, one hope was that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100524/peachy-keane-will-yahoo-hold-onto-associated-content-ceo/">Patrick Keane</a>, CEO of Associated Content, which Yahoo just acquired, would take the job. But sources said he declined the offer.</p>
<p>Yahoo also had eyeballed internal candidates, but it seems to have decided to simply kiss, <em>oops</em>, elevate almost all of them.</p>
<p>Said Yahoo in its official statement about the changes:</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo! is committed to maintaining and strengthening partnerships with advertisers and agencies, and has a long history of sales leadership in the industry. The North American sales organization will now report directly to Hilary Schneider, EVP of the Americas. This organizational change will elevate the strong executive talent at Yahoo! and accelerate our momentum in the marketplace.&#8221;</p>

<p>That&#8217;s got a lot of people inside Yahoo (YHOO) a little jumpy, according to numerous sources who have contacted me recently, because of the importance of firm leadership in the premium display online ad business in which the Internet giant needs to keep excelling.</p>

<p>But she&#8217;s reportedly been unable to land the kind of prominent name Yahoo has been seeking for the job, after trying to attract several well-known candidates and rejecting others.</p>

<p>With Everson and others not panning out, one hope was that <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100524/peachy-keane-will-yahoo-hold-onto-associated-content-ceo/">Patrick Keane</a>, CEO of Associated Content, which Yahoo just acquired, would take the job. But sources said he has thus far declined the offer.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s why, sources said, Yahoo is back to eyeballing internal candidates again, especially 11-year Yahoo veteran Mitch Spolan, VP of North American field sales, and Mollie Spilman, Yahoo&#8217;s SVP of B2B marketing and also its packaging group.</p>
<p>Another Yahoo exec who had been in the running: Seth Dallaire, a former Microsoft exec whom Bradford brought to the company last fall as VP of mid-market sales, a newly-created role responsible for all mid-market sales efforts across search and display advertising.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll see how it turns out, but as Yahoo just closed its second quarter, it will be important to get some clarity around its most important business in its most important market, especially as its stock continues its lackluster performance.</p>
<p>To help goose its shares, Yahoo announced a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100630/as-its-stock-languishes-yahoo-does-a-buyback-to-juice-shares/">$3 billion stock buyback plan</a> last week.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, Yahoo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100518/yahoo-snaps-up-associated-content-for-90-million-to-counter-aol-and-demand-media">acquired social content start-up Associated Content</a> for $90 million.</p>
<p>While founder Luke Beatty was prominently presented by Yahoo (YHOO) as the face of the deal, CEO Patrick Keane, pictured here, was oddly missing from most of the PR around the media-focused acquisition.</p>
<p>The reason, according to several sources at Yahoo: Yahoo&#8217;s top execs have not yet persuaded Keane to stay after the purchase is complete.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not for lack of trying. Yahoo execs&#8211;such as CEO Carol Bartz and even co-founder Jerry Yang&#8211;have been trying to get Keane signed up, a move made more difficult since Keane got a big slug of cash in the payout of the deal.</p>
<p>One issue: What job would Keane get? One possibility among many is head of U.S. advertising sales, which was recently vacated by Joanne Bradford.</p>
<p>But sources close to the situation said Yahoo execs are also offering Keane the option of choosing his job.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because he has substantially more consumer Internet experience than most of Bartz&#8217;s recent hires, many of whom have worked in the enterprise arena.</p>
<p>Bradford <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">left abruptly in March</a> for Associated Content competitor Demand Media, leaving her key job open. Yahoo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100507/calling-all-yahoos-or-are-they-calling-demand-media/">hired Spencer Stuart&#8217;s Jim Citrin</a> to conduct a search.</p>
<p>Keane certainly fits the sales bill, from his years as head of sales strategy at Google (GOOG) and CMO of the interactive unit of CBS (CBS).</p>
<p>Keane would clearly be a pick with more of a strategy bent than others whom Yahoo is aiming at, who are more plain-vanilla online ad sales execs.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The temperature is rising between Yahoo and Demand Media as several execs have or are expected to move from the Internet giant to the social media start-up.</p>
<p>In March, Demand pulled off a major coup by hiring Yahoo&#8217;s head of U.S. advertising sales, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media">Joanne Bradford</a>.</p>
<p>Today, Bradford&#8217;s program manager, Sarah Northern, resigned from the Silicon Valley company and said she is heading to the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Demand.</p>

<p>More significantly and also today, Erika Nardini (pictured here), VP of brand packaging at Yahoo (YHOO), announced to her staff that she is leaving the company, and she is widely expected to go to Demand too.</p>
<p>When called by BoomTown, a Yahoo spokesman confirmed Nardini&#8217;s departure.</p>
<p>In a statement Yahoo said:</p>
<p>&#8220;Erika Nardini, VP of Yahoo! packaging group, has resigned from Yahoo!. On an interim basis, Mollie Spilman, Yahoo!&#8217;s senior vice president of B2B marketing, will assume Erika&#8217;s responsibilities and continue to run B2B marketing. Mollie will continue to drive the strong momentum we have in packaging, and how we service and deliver innovation to our customers and partners. We thank Erika for her contributions to Yahoo! and wish her success in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nardini, who is well-liked by the sales force,  was hired at Yahoo by Bradford; both are former ad execs at Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Sources at Yahoo said top execs are furious at what they consider a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoos-poached-demand-media-grabs-four-more-ahead-of-ipo-2010-5">raid on talent by Demand</a>.</p>
<p>But Bradford is legally disallowed to poach execs, and sources within the ranks said many were seeking the jobs without prompting.</p>
<p>Actually, such movement is quite typical at Internet companies, especially if a top exec like Bradford leaves. Often, many move after the initial departure and usually to the same company.</p>
<p>Yahoo is currently on the hunt for a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100324/wanted-online-ad-sales-heads-for-both-yahoo-and-microsoft/">replacement for Bradford</a>, a search being led by <a href="http://www.spencerstuart.com/consultants/4917/">Spencer Stuart&#8217;s Jim Citrin</a>.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, AOL has been busy selecting the board for the company, which is still set to spin itself off by year&#8217;s end&#8211;even as it slows down a decision on a new search deal with either current partner Google or a more emboldened Microsoft.</p>
<p>AOL is using Spencer Stuart in the search for directors, led by well-known headhunter Jim Citrin, sources said, and the company has already settled on several outside candidates.</p>
<p>The final board is likely to have about 10 members, and up to a dozen.</p>
<p>At least one of those seats will go to CEO Tim Armstrong, with one or two more claimed by its current corporate owner, Time Warner (TWX).</p>
<p>AOL and Time Warner made <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090710/aol-mulls-director-choices-for-new-board-of-spin-off">their own wish list of potential directors earlier this year</a>, but some people are also lobbying the company to join the board.</p>
<p>BoomTown is working on discovering all those names, but sources added that the candidates being looked at are a mix of personalities culled from the media, advertising and Web worlds.</p>
<p>Among the key attributes: More presumably fast-forward and innovative Silicon Valley types that can help burnish AOL&#8217;s tarnished tech cred.</p>
<p>Here are some of my picks:</p>
<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, Guitar Hero CEO Dan Rosensweig, WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg (actually, AOL should buy the start-up), eBay (EBAY) CEO John Donahoe, LinkedIn Chairman Reid Hoffman or CEO Jeff Weiner, Juniper Networks (JNPR) CEO Kevin Johnson, Netflix (NFLX) CEO Reed Hastings, and former AOL iconic exec Ted Leonsis.</p>
<p>And, just for fun, News Corp. (NWS) digital don (and ousted former AOL head) Jon Miller or former Yahoo President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>(I might also add former AOL exec, Netscape co-founder and all-around entrepreneur Marc Andreessen, but if he joins another tech/Web board, he is going to get splinters.)</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Armstrong has set a strategy centered around the turbocharging of online content, powered by a more flexible platform and paid for by goosing AOL&#8217;s graphical advertising business.</p>
<p>This puts the online icon&#8211;once a powerhouse and now not so much, having operated inside Time Warner since its merger early in this decade&#8211;in more serious competition with Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Yahoo now dominates content on the Web, with powerful news, sports and finance sites, and has recently been trying to reinvigorate its brand. This week, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090922/live-from-new-york-yahoo-introduces-you/">it launched a new marketing campaign</a> with the motto, &#8220;It&#8217;s Y!ou.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yahoo also recently struck a search technology and advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT), which has now aimed its efforts at AOL.</p>
<p>According to sources, Microsoft execs have been aggressively courting AOL to switch its search business from Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>The search behemoth has long been AOL&#8217;s partner in what sources at both companies said has been a productive and lucrative relationship.</p>
<p>Armstrong is also a former top exec at Google, which many at the company hope will further cement its chances.</p>
<p>And while the renewal of that deal does not officially need to be struck until late next year, sources add that Google has already prepared and offered what it considers an attractive new deal for AOL.</p>
<p>But, much to Google&#8217;s chagrin, with a focus on the spinoff and preparations for some more cost-cutting in the months ahead, AOL has decided not to accept it yet and is not likely to anytime soon.</p>
<p>While hedging the situation in a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090921/aol-more-org-chart-shuffles-coming-so-are-ad-dollars-but-mum-on-microsoft/">recent video interview with MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka</a>, Armstrong has also recently met with Microsoft execs, sources said, who have discussed a number of partnership options with him, including a tighter relationship with its MSN content properties.</p>
<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no need to rush, especially since there is already a lot on AOL&#8217;s plate,&#8221; said one source close to the situation. &#8220;And, since it has options, AOL is going to take time considering them.&#8221;</p>

<p>In the ongoing game of musical chairs among top managers at Internet companies, former Yahoo exec Brad Garlinghouse&#8211;famous for his controversial <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080627/a-garlinghouse-memorial-boomtown-decodes-the-infamous-peanut-butter-manifesto/">&#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221;</a> which correctly chided the Internet giant for becoming so lugubrious several years ago&#8211;is taking a job at AOL very similar to the one he left at Yahoo last year.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse, 38, has been named president of Internet and mobile communications at AOL, putting him in charge of the New York-based Time Warner (TWX) online unit&#8217;s powerful email and instant-messaging properties, including ICQ and AIM.</p>
<p>He has only been in talks with AOL&#8211;which used Spencer Stuart&#8217;s Internet-top-exec-finder-in-chief Jim Citrin&#8211;for a few weeks, in a deal that came together quickly, he and the company said.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse, a longtime Web entrepreneur and exec, had reportedly been considering a number of start-up and venture-related jobs since he left Yahoo last summer after six years there.</p>
<p>Sources said he was seriously considering becoming the CEO of a mobile firm.</p>
<p>He was most recently at Silver Lake Partners, as an &#8220;in-house senior advisor,&#8221; the private equity firm that recently bought the Skype Internet telephony firm for $1.9 billion. Garlinghouse also reportedly helped work on that deal.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really exciting to be to able to rebuild and revitalize an industry giant,&#8221; said Garlinghouse in an interview with BoomTown earlier today. &#8220;I make no bones that these [properties] are in need of that&#8230;but there is also a huge opportunity to do something cool.&#8221;</p>
<p>Garlinghouse has to hurry. Despite being among the top communications players online&#8211;a group that also includes Yahoo (YHOO) and Microsoft (MSFT) and, more recently, Google (GOOG)&#8211;AOL has lost relevance with key audiences, even as social networking properties like Facebook and the microblogging service, Twitter, have innovated in the communications space.</p>
<p>The hiring of Garlinghouse, well known in Silicon Valley circles, is meant to counter that.</p>
<p>He will head up AOL&#8217;s operations from its Mountain View, Calif., campus&#8211;which is also the former HQ of AOL-acquired Netscape Communications&#8211;where, said AOL CEO Tim Armstrong, Garlinghouse will &#8220;be CEO of Silicon Valley for us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Between all its various properties, AOL has several hundred employees in the Northern California area.</p>
<p>Armstrong said AOL&#8211;which was founded 25 years ago on the East Coast and has tried and failed many times to get a true foothold in the West&#8211;thinks having an important player at the center of the tech industry is critical as it moves to spin off as an independent company by the end of the year.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a triple play in getting a great executive, who is a master in the communications on the Web and who is well known out there,&#8221; said Armstrong. &#8220;Brad is our senior AOL manager there.&#8221;</p>
<p>Along with running all of AOL&#8217;s communications properties, Garlinghouse will inherit some of its community properties, although AOL&#8217;s Bebo social networking unit&#8211;now considered to be an overpriced acquisition error&#8211;now resides in its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-patch-media-ceo-brod-now-heading-aols-venture-unit">ventures unit, headed by Jon Brod</a>.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse will also be aiding Brod, said Armstrong, with AOL on the lookout for acquisition opportunities in communications and other arenas.</p>
<p>While Garlinghouse declined to be specific about what would pique his buying interest, he was responsible for such big Yahoo deals as its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">$350 million purchase of Zimbra</a> in the fall of 2007.</p>
<p>He was also key to bringing both Oddpost, which is at the heart of Yahoo&#8217;s email offering, and the popular Flickr photosharing service to Yahoo.</p>
<p>Garlinghouse said he has admired what Twitter and Facebook have done, but that they were not destroying traditional online communications, pioneered by AOL, as some assert.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a vibrant segment and this just means there are a lot of opportunities to enable integration,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think of it as an expansion of online communications and I hope AOL can do more collaboration and partnerships.&#8221;</p>
<p>Garlinghouse also has to watch AOL&#8217;s basic products like email, which was recently passed by Google’s Gmail as the No. 3 email service in the U.S. Yahoo Mail is the top email, while Microsoft&#8217;s Hotmail is second.</p>
<p>How much Garlinghouse can do will depend on the future financial strength of AOL. Its advertising business has been hit hard in the econalpyse, with hopes it will return before its money-generating access business continues its slow decline.</p>
<p>Armstrong is now in the midst of looking over AOL&#8217;s cost structure and employee base, which most expect will eventually result in another round of layoffs and cuts.</p>
<p>He has been busy creating a different strategy for the company since he arrived earlier this year, as well as hiring (and firing) top execs to create a new management structure.</p>
<p>Now, that includes Garlinghouse.</p>

<p>Garlinghouse spent nearly six years at Yahoo! where he most recently served as SVP of Communications and Communities. Prior to that he served as SVP of Communications, Communities and Front Doors, which included the Yahoo! home page. He came to Yahoo in 2003 as VP, Communication Products. During his time there, Yahoo! Mail went from No. 3 to leading all competitors by a wide margin, and the company&#8217;s instant messaging service rose to become the leader in that market as well. <p>Microsoft is searching for a major executive to run its world-wide online sales, said several sources close to the situation, even as talks with Yahoo about a deal to partner in its search and display advertising businesses continue.</p>
<p>&#8220;They need to find a way to make money in display,&#8221; said one source close to the situation. &#8220;Or, I guess, find a way to not lose quite so much.&#8221;</p>
<p>The software giant has been trying to build its online business for many years now, spending a lot of money and not getting very much traction.</p>
<p>In its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090423/microsoft-gets-hit-by-the-econalyspe-earnings-and-revenues-slide/">recent quarterly results</a>, in fact, Microsoft&#8217;s online services got hit badly, with a 14 percent decline in revenue from a year ago to $721 million. Losses doubled to $575 million.</p>
<p>Sources said Microsoft (MSFT)&#8211;which has hired headhunting firm Spencer Stuart to conduct the search&#8211;is looking for more execs to turbocharge the situation, with one criterion being that the person hired is &#8220;another ambassador to Madison Avenue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last fall, it did that by hiring Time Inc. ad exec Robin Domeniconi to take over as the new VP, U.S., Microsoft Advertising.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why the new sales candidate the company is looking for might only be for someone to lead Microsoft&#8217;s international ad sales, since the exec in charge of that business left in December as part of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081215/microsoft-sales-vet-leaves-after-consolidation-post-qi-lu-hire/">a mass of changes</a> in the wake of the hiring of digital head Qi Lu.</p>
<p>Those changes included the departure of that exec, Global VP of Sales Bill Shaughnessy, as well as its top online ad sales exec, Brian McAndrews, and the rejiggering of its online sales unit.</p>
<p>In that switch, Microsoft said in a press release: &#8220;The field sales organizations in the Online Services Group will move to Microsoft&#8217;s centralized Sales, Marketing and Services Group led by chief operating officer Kevin Turner. This group, called Consumer &#038; Online, will be led by Corporate Vice President Darren Huston and will include the Global Advertising Sales and Services organization, led by vice president Bill Shaughnessy.&#8221;</p>
<p>The move to centralize, according to sources, has been controversial within the company, since it means all sales are being lumped into one megagroup.</p>
<p>That could all change dramatically again if there is any success in the talks Microsoft has been having with Yahoo (YHOO) about outsourcing its online display sales to the Internet giant. The pair have been discussing partnering over search and advertising.</p>
<p>While such a deal might not happen&#8211;Yahoo has been especially reticent to separate its search and display businesses&#8211;the two sides have been discussing several scenarios in a bid to compete with online giant Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>Among the latest ideas is one in which Yahoo would take over both search and display advertising sales and Microsoft would run the tech behind the scenes.</p>
<p>Such a deal would be a major shift for both companies in their business focus and would also tether them together.</p>

<p>Hey Everyone&#8211;</p>
<p>Today ends the first quarter of 2009, so I wanted to send out an update on our growth and financial progress, as well as a couple of changes we are making.</p>
<p>Our user growth has been extraordinary over the past year and has continued to be strong throughout Q1. We are getting very close to reaching our 200 millionth active user. This is pretty remarkable considering we just reached 100 million actives a little more than seven months ago. We have become the top site for sharing information on the web, and this gives us a good strategic position to help people share even more.</p>
<p>I am also pleased that our financial progress has been very strong as well. While we came into this year wondering how the recession might affect us, our financial performance in the first quarter surpassed our expectations. As other businesses around us are slowing down and cutting back, we continue to grow around the world. Our advertising products are becoming more attractive for advertisers and we have seen strong growth in both our domestic and international direct sales and online sales channels.</p>
<p>Even in the current economic environment, we are confident that this success will continue. Based on our first quarter results, we now believe we are on track to see our revenue grow by at least 70% this year. We just completed our fifth straight quarter of EBITDA profitability. And most importantly, we expect to achieve free cash flow profitability next year. That&#8217;s an important measure of financial success and sustainability because it means we’d be able to fund all of our operations and server purchases from the cash we generate while increasing our cash reserves in the bank. Hitting these numbers will require continued hard work, discipline and execution by everyone here at Facebook, but we are on the path to achieve these goals.</p>
<p>As we ramp up to take on these challenges, I want to let you know that Gideon Yu will be leaving the company. Gideon has played an important role in helping us achieve our financial success, building a strong finance team and establishing the core financial operations of our company. I will always be grateful to Gideon for his contributions to Facebook and what we are trying to accomplish. As those of you who know him know, Gideon’s family is his highest priority and it’s certainly not the usual cliché to say that he plans to take some time off to be with his wife and son. Gideon and I have often discussed that the next stage of his career will likely be as an investor, and I fully support him in this regard.</p>
<p>We have retained Spencer Stuart to search for a new CFO and we will be looking for someone with public company experience who can help take us to the next stage in our growth.</p>
<p>In the interim, the finance team will report to Cipora Herman in her capacity as Treasurer and Ted Ullyot as mteam lead. In addition, [Facebook is] fortunate that Peter Currie, the former CFO for Netscape, has agreed to serve as the advisor to Facebook until a new CFO comes on board.</p>

<p>If you think it sounds somewhat similar to Facebook today&#8211;where <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/former-netscape-cfo-peter-currie-will-be-new-facebook-financial-adviser-until-new-cfo-is-found/">Currie will now help out as temporary financial adviser</a> after the social-networking site <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially/">parted ways with its CFO, Gideon Yu, yesterday, following mutual disagreements</a> and announced a search for a replacement&#8211;you are correct.</p>
<p>In that job, the 53-year-old Currie will be helping Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg, 24, navigate&#8211;albeit temporarily&#8211;through some stormy economics seas on a journey that will hopefully end in an initial public offering.</p>
<p>The search for a new CFO will also involve Currie, obviously, and will be conducted by Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart.</p>
<p>But until a new CFO is in place, Facebook&#8217;s quest still entails sorting out a substantive advertising monetization strategy while also keeping up its speedy growth rates and managing the high costs that mount with its popularity.</p>
<p>That certainly was Netscape&#8217;s major challenge, which it never met successfully and which was made worse by intense attacks from Microsoft (MSFT) on Netscape&#8217;s core browser business.</p>
<p>That eventually led to the antitrust trial against the software giant, even as Netscape saw its star fall dramatically.</p>
<p>It was sold to AOL in 1998 for $4 billion, a shadow of its bubble valuation, and is <a href="http://netscape.aol.com/">now more of a footnote</a> than an ongoing tech product (although the now-popular Mozilla browser is a direct descendant of Netscape).</p>
<p>In fact, in 2008, Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL dropped its support for the Netscape browser and said it was no longer releasing new versions.</p>
<p>Still, a lot of former Netscape execs now hold other key jobs in the Web space.</p>
<p>Its investor relations exec, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080718/sure-the-cbs-cnet-deal-seems-crazy-but-maybe-in-a-good-way/">Quincy Smith</a>, now heads up the digital arm of CBS (CBS), for example.</p>
<p>And Andreessen has started a number of companies and has transformed himself into an kind of elder statesman of Silicon Valley of late, as well as a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/marc-andreessens-new-venture-fund-project-a">newly minted venture investor</a>.</p>

<p>Andreessen, many sources said, was a shadow influence on Zuckerberg&#8217;s decisions related to Yu, with whom relations had gotten tense, and to bring in Currie (pictured here).</p>
<p>Currie is certainly a great choice, in terms of the close-knit tech sector&#8217;s respect and experience.</p>
<p>Currie is also unusually tall, aggressively avuncular and laid-back, loves Elvis and enjoys pranking reporters like BoomTown. (Case in point: He once tried to spread the rumor that I am short due to a medical condition.)</p>
<p>Now the president of Currie Capital, a private investment firm, he had previously worked at General Atlantic in private equity.</p>
<p>After Netscape, he was a partner and co-founder of the Barksdale Group, an early-stage venture capital firm.</p>
<p>Before Netscape, he was CFO of McCaw Cellular Communications and also worked at Morgan Stanley (MS).</p>
<p>Currie is also board-happy, serving as a director of a variety of tech firms, private and public. They have included CNET Networks, Critical Path, Clearwire (CLWR), Safeco, Ofoto, Tellme Networks and Zantaz, as well as Sun Microsystems (JAVA).</p>
<p>He has an MBA from Stanford University and went to Williams College.</p>

<p>BoomTown has <a href="http://www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com/digital-changes-for-news-corp-ex-aoler-jon-miller-becomes-digital-media-ceo-fim-prez-peter-levinsohn-to-big-studio-job/">confirmed a report by Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily</a> that former AOL head Jon Miller is set to take over as digital head at News Corp., replacing Peter Levinsohn.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://rosslevinsohn.wordpress.com/2009/03/28/as-the-internet-world-turns/">move was also mentioned in a blog post</a> by Miller&#8217;s partner in an investment company, Ross Levinsohn, who once held a smaller version of the job Miller is taking.</p>
<p>But Miller has not actually signed up for the job officially, since he is still under a noncompete agreement with Time Warner from his AOL stint. It runs out in three days, in fact.</p>
<p>As some might recall, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080801/boomtown-plea-to-jeff-bewkes-free-jon-miller">Miller was barred from taking a board seat at Yahoo</a> last year by Time Warner CEO Jeff Bewkes.</p>
<p>But sources said News Corp. is likely to announce Miller as head by Monday or Tuesday at the latest.</p>
<p>Once he does sign,  which seems likely, Miller will become News Corp.&#8217;s chief digital officer, reporting directly to the media giant&#8217;s head, Rupert Murdoch. Based in New York, he will also be chairman and CEO of the newly created News Digital Media group.</p>
<p>Sources noted that this is a a different and larger platform for Miller, bigger than just the Fox Interactive Media job that Levinsohn held. It will go across all properties held by News Corp. across the globe.</p>
<p>&#8220;The idea is to mainstream the digital initiatives, which have been all over the company,&#8221; said one source close to the situation.</p>
<p>Levinsohn will move to another job within News Corp. (NWS) at the film and television studios, to coordinate delivery of its assets on mobile and digital platforms, sources said. It will be his task to create sustainable business models in this fast-moving arena.</p>
<p>News Corp. has, in fact, been searching for a new digital head for the past several months, talking to a number of well-known Internet execs, including Joost head Mike Volpi, former AOL exec Jim Bankoff and former Facebook exec Owen Van Natta.</p>
<p>The decision to rejigger News Corp.&#8217;s digital assets came after the announcement that President and COO Peter Chernin was leaving his job and has largely been pushed by Murdoch.</p>
<p>Previously, Chernin had been in charge of digital efforts at News Corp.</p>
<p>The search for the position was, in fact, conducted by well-known head tech and media headhunter Jim Citrin of Spencer Stuart.</p>
<p>Ironically, Miller is still essentially taking a job once held by his current partner, Ross Levinsohn, at the investment fund, Velocity Interactive Group. As I noted above, Levinsohn confirmed the Miller offer from News Corp. in a blog post called &#8220;Thunderclap.&#8221;</p>
<p>The move is a fascinating one, and one of many in the digital arena of late among its top execs. Former Google (GOOG) exec Tim Armstrong recently took over as CEO of the Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL, for example.</p>
<p>Also, even though the job will cover all the the many News Corp. Web properties, even more compelling will be how Miller will deal with its largest and most prominent asset: social-networking giant MySpace.</p>
<p>More to the point, it will be riveting to see how he will handle managing MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe.</p>
<p>Both previous FIM heads, Ross Levinsohn and Peter Levinsohn, many sources said, had to deal with DeWolfe&#8217;s own sphere of influence within News Corp., especially his close ties to Murdoch. Both FIM and MySpace are located in Beverly Hills, Calif.</p>
<p>Relations between DeWolfe and both those execs could be described, at best, as tense.</p>
<p>But Miller, who is a much bigger Internet player in his own right, with a more powerful charge from Murdoch, certainly is likely to shift that balance of power.</p>

<p>And who knows? Maybe John Chambers, Steve Ballmer and Brian Roberts will indeed say something important today and tomorrow at Quadrangle&#8217;s Foursquare conference. Chrysler&#8217;s Robert Nardelli is speaking too. He might have something newsworthy to say.</p>
<p>But you are unlikely to read about it.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because there&#8217;s no press allowed at the private equity shop&#8217;s annual conference, which starts this afternoon at New York&#8217;s Plaza Hotel.</p>
<p>Or rather, there&#8217;s <em>some</em> press at the event. But they&#8217;ll be on stage. And they won&#8217;t be telling their readers and listeners what they saw and heard.</p>
<p>CNBC&#8217;s David Faber, Becky Quick and Maria Bartiromo, for instance, will be moderating panels over the next few days. So will the New York Times&#8217; Andrew Ross Sorkin. And network TV news bigshots Katie Couric, George Stephanopoulos and Brian Williams will answer questions themselves (Portfolio&#8217;s Matt Cooper will be moderating that one).</p>
<p>Am I crabby because I asked (nicely) and couldn&#8217;t get in myself? Nah. It&#8217;s Quadrangle&#8217;s event, and they can run it any way they want. But it does look like a pretty good gathering of worthies. Maybe I&#8217;ll park myself in the Plaza&#8217;s lobby and see if I can bump into some of them.</p>
