<p>One of Yahoo&#8217;s biggest problems &#8212; brain drain &#8212; has turned out to be an asset for private equity firms and other players interested in figuring out their best moves related to the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p>A plethora of ex-Yahoos, including many former top execs, are getting buttonholed by those who want to know more about the inner workings of the company that might not be obvious from its copious financial data available publicly.</p>
<p>That includes former Americas head Hilary Schneider, who has a longer-term consulting gig with TPG Capital, one of the several PE firms that has recently signed a non-disclosure agreement with Yahoo; former COO and President Sue Decker, who has had a longtime informal relationship with Blackstone, which has not signed the NDA and has been in talks with Yahoo&#8217;s Asian partners, China&#8217;s Alibaba Group and Japan&#8217;s SoftBank; and even former CEO Carol Bartz, who sources say has also been contacted to get her insights.</p>
<p>She is one of many in that regard, in a large pool of former Yahoos, such as: LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner, who had run Yahoo&#8217;s media efforts; Chegg CEO Dan Rosensweig, former Yahoo COO; SurveyMonkey CEO Dave Goldberg, who ran swathes of Yahoo&#8217;s entertainment properties; Criteo CEO Greg Coleman, former Yahoo sales head; former CEO Terry Semel, who is now an investor; former communications exec Brad Garlinghouse, who is now at AOL; and Demand Media Chief Revenue Officer Joanne Bradford, who also was a top Yahoo advertising exec.</p>
<p>Not all are cooperating with the requests for a chitchat about Yahoo, but there is much incoming interest in ex-Yahoos and what they might know.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s lots more where that came from, from all parts and all levels of Yahoo, given the breadth of the exes now doing very well &#8212; <em>thank you very much</em> &#8212; throughout the tech and media industries. </p>
<p>Thus, calls from PE firms, from Silver Lake to Bain Capital to Providence Equity Partners, as well as interest from major and majorly irritated shareholders, such as activist hedge fund investor Dan Loeb.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a smart idea to tap this rich vein of information, as all contemplate possible multi-billion-dollar investments.</p>
<p>While some of these execs have not worked at Yahoo in many years, all have significant knowledge about the challenges and also the culture that cannot be gleaned from spreadsheets.</p>
<p>They also know a lot about the internal politics and personalities of the existing inside players, too. More importantly, several were involved in similar previous major business decisions at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Decker, for example, was a key exec in the Yahoo takeover attempt by Microsoft several years ago; Schneider and Bartz were deeply involved in striking the advertising and search partnership with Microsoft.</p>
<p>&#8220;Between everyone, it&#8217;s a good way to figure out where all the bodies are buried,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;And there are <em>a lot</em> of bodies.&#8221;</p>

<p>When Yahoo announced on <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090113/bartz-to-be-yahoo-ceo-now-what-next/">January 13, 2009, that it had hired</a> longtime Silicon Valley tech veteran Carol Bartz to replace outgoing CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang and turn around the company, there was a sigh of relief.</p>
<p>At the time, she presented a take-no-prisoners image and was touted as someone with a  reputation as a professional manager who could clean up the place.</p>
<p>Not so, as it has turned out.</p>
<p>While Bartz has streamlined certain areas and made some strong management hires, her performance has been decidedly bumpy and mostly downhill. (Update: And this afternoon that ride took her <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110906/exclusive-carol-bartz-out-at-yahoo-cfo-interim-ceo/">straight out the door</a>.)</p>
<p>Consider: The share price has settled in at about $12.50 (just about where it was when Bartz took over), Yahoo&#8217;s recent financial results have been weak, its key advertising business is struggling, its attrition rate among engineers and others is startlingly high and its product innovation cycle seems stopped up. Add to that: Weak relationships with key Asian partners, a pricey but failed marketing effort and a proclivity for verbal gaffes by Bartz.</p>
<p>Still, given that Yahoo&#8217;s Internet traffic, top media sites and brand remain huge, the going-sideways situation has again caused some investors &#8212; including powerful private equity firms and other monied investors &#8212; to pull out their spreadsheets about a variety of scenarios related to Yahoo.</p>
<p>The players who have sniffed around of late are powerful, sources said, including Silver Lake Partners, Andreessen Horowitz, former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin and Providence Equity Partners, among others. Also in the Wall Street rumor mill recently are large companies: AT&#038;T, News Corp. and Verizon.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to ignore all that value sitting there and not being managed properly,&#8221; said one person who is considering a variety of investing options related to Yahoo. &#8220;And it&#8217;s not like AOL, whose assets are so weak, so it seems like an opportunity.&#8221;</p>
<p>All the schemes are different &#8212; ranging from taking it private to making a large investment to splitting it into parts &#8212; although they all seem to require cooperation with Yahoo to get done.</p>
<p>And while there is no serious effort afoot as yet, there are increasing signs that Yahoo&#8217;s board is ready to listen to any serious offers, said multiple sources, especially as the company has continued to drift under the leadership of Bartz.</p>
<p>While board chairman Roy Bostock has publicly backed Bartz &#8212; after all, he was her biggest champion at the time of her hiring &#8212; multiple sources said he has started to become more involved at looking at the management issues at the company and its challenges.</p>
<p>Yang &#8212; still a key figure at Yahoo &#8212; has also become more active, said sources, and tensions between him and Bartz have increased over the last few months.</p>
<p>While this might, as often happens at Yahoo, lead nowhere, what&#8217;s clear is the increasing pressure on the directors of the company from its major shareholders to act.</p>
<p>&#8220;You watch an asset like that degrade and it makes you furious,&#8221; said one investor. &#8220;After a while, you hope it makes the board at Yahoo feel the same.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment (but so would I).</p>

<p>You would think the settlement of a major dispute would goose the stock of a company, but <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110729/liveblogging-the-yahoo-alibaba-settlement-call-everybody-breathe/">Yahoo&#8217;s deal with its Chinese partner Alibaba Group</a> on Friday did exactly the opposite.</p>
<p>Despite the clearing of an obvious overhang to its shares, the stock of the Silicon Valley Internet giant dropped almost three percent Friday to close at $13.10. While the ongoing federal budget wrangling was partly to blame, it was only a very small part with an overall market decline of under one percent.</p>
<p>A tepid reaction to the deal &#8212; in which Yahoo, Alibaba and Japan&#8217;s SoftBank came to terms over the spinoff of Alibaba&#8217;s Alipay payments unit after much wrangling over the move &#8212; came quickly from Wall Street analysts.</p>
<p>A report titled &#8220;Yahoo Inc: Alipay Agreement: Better than Nothing, But Not That Great,&#8221; by J.P. Morgan&#8217;s Doug Anmuth, was typical. Pointing to no clarity on an IPO of the Chinese assets of Alibaba and that &#8220;prior to the divestiture, Alibaba Group owned 100% of Alipay and all of its income, which is now reduced to 37.5% ownership of Alipay and 49.9% share of the pre-tax income,&#8221; he noted that Wall Street &#8220;has recently assigned no value to Yahoo!&#8217;s share of the asset.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, less than zero, if the stock decline is taken into account, which means Yahoo&#8217;s market cap is now just over $17 billion. </p>
<p>According to sources close to the situation, especially since <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/not-so-chart-tastic-picture-of-yahoos-2q-display-disaster/">Yahoo&#8217;s Asian assets make up more than $9 billion of that valuation</a>, private equity investors and others are pulling out their spreadsheets once again about a possible takeover or privatizing of Yahoo.</p>
<p>Several months ago, for example, former News Corp. exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101117/enter-the-chernin-former-news-corp-president-and-coo-in-yahoo-what-if-mix/">Peter Chernin had been contemplating a friendly bid</a> with partners such as Providence Equity Partners and others. While there have been rumors recently that he has reengaged in that effort, that is unclear.</p>
<p>Sources also note that Yahoo&#8217;s top execs, especially CEO Carol Bartz, and also members of its board, are perplexed that the settlement in China &#8212; a positive development &#8212; had the opposite effect on the stock.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s part of a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110719/not-so-chart-tastic-picture-of-yahoos-2q-display-disaster/">continuing decline</a>. Yahoo shares are down almost 26 percent in the past three months. Most Web stocks &#8212; such as Google, Amazon and Microsoft &#8212; are strongly up in that period. The only other obvious laggard is AOL, which is down almost 16 percent in the past three months.</p>

While laptop sales grow and desktop sales decline, more people rely solely on laptop touchpads, many of which offer more functionality than mice. And tablets like Apple&#8217;s iPad and Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Tab shun the mouse altogether. </p>

<p>But before you toss your tethered friend, it&#8217;s worth paying homage to the many things this gadget can do. From precisely cropping one of cousin Fred&#8217;s fleeting girlfriends out of a family photo to selecting just the right number in a spreadsheet filled with thousands of digits, the mouse is just the right tool for such precision jobs. And sometimes it&#8217;s just a lot more comfortable to use for long stretches of work on a laptop.</p>
<p>This week, I tested three computer mice that laptop users will actually want to bring along with them. Their designs make them simple to pack in a bag, use while sitting on the couch or recharge directly from the laptop. I tried Microsoft&#8217;s $70 <a href="http://3.ly/fxnn">Arc Touch Mouse</a>, Logitech&#8217;s $50 <a href="http://3.ly/T7Xr">Couch Mouse M515</a> and the $70 <a href="http://3.ly/THPx">Swiftpoint Mouse</a>. </p>
<p>At first glance, Microsoft&#8217;s Arc Touch Mouse looks like nothing more than a flattened mouse. But it&#8217;s cleverly designed to bend into an arc that serves as a comfortable rest for the hand. As soon as the Arc Touch Mouse is bent into this shape, its battery turns on. It holds this shape until you flatten it with your hand. When it&#8217;s flattened, the mouse turns off to conserve battery. Microsoft claims this battery will last up to six months. The flattened Arc Touch is much easier to pack in a carry-on or to slip into a side pocket than its rotund relatives.</p>

<p>On a Mac, the Arc Touch is limited to basic functions, including use of its touch-sensitive scroll strip that scrolls super quickly when a finger flicks up or down on it. This strip makes a subtle sound like that of a roulette wheel as it scrolls, and a tap on the strip stops the scrolling at a specific location on the screen. I caught myself looking down at this mouse a few times to make sure I wasn&#8217;t using a real scroll wheel because the sound effects and feel of the scroll strip are so wheel-like. </p>
<p>On a Windows PC, installing software will give the Arc Touch extra functions. Double tapping the middle of the scroll strip gives it the same function as a regular mouse&#8217;s middle click. Or this button can be programmed to open a link in a new tab within Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer browser. This mouse&#8217;s tiny USB receiver can be plugged into a laptop almost unnoticed or it will magnetically stick to the base when not in use.</p>
<p>Logitech&#8217;s Couch Mouse M515 seems like it was made with me in mind. I often sit on my bed or couch using my laptop, and this mouse has a sealed underside so its sensor doesn&#8217;t collect fuzz from fabrics after passing over them several times. I used it on carpets and on a blanket and liked its base, which is designed to glide easily over all types of surfaces. This mouse felt fast and responsive.</p>
<p>To conserve battery, the Couch Mouse is only on when a hand grips it. So if someone stops to watch TV for a while, then accidentally sits on the mouse or the mouse slips between couch cushions, its buttons won&#8217;t continue clicking away. An underside switch turns it entirely on or off. The Couch Mouse also uses a USB receiver, and it can be stored inside the mouse for travel.</p>
<p>Like the Couch Mouse, the Swiftpoint Mouse from Swiftpoint Ltd. of New Zealand, is designed for use with laptops in less than ideal working environments. This tiny mouse was designed to operate directly on the laptop wrist rest area or on the laptop touchpad, itself. In fact, the mouse comes with a large, clear sticker labeled &#8220;Swiftpoint Parking Accessory&#8221; that goes on the laptop so the mouse doesn&#8217;t slip off when the laptop&#8217;s tilted. </p>
<p>The simple sticker worked well, creating a magnetic square in the center of the wrist rest area that kept the mouse from slipping off when I was leaning back and typing at an angle. </p>

<p>A scroll wheel on the right of the Swiftpoint Mouse works by rolling it with one finger or by turning the mouse on its side and moving it up or down, which made for faster scrolling. I found this feature awkward and unnatural at first, but after a lot of use, I grew accustomed to it. Touching the left click button while scrolling up or down zooms in or out, respectively, on any screen. </p>
<p>This mouse is so small that rather than its USB receiver fitting inside or on it for storage, the mouse magnetically attaches onto its USB receiver, resting on it while the receiver is plugged into the laptop. This allows for the Swiftpoint Mouse to recharge its battery; Swiftpoint says 30 seconds of charging will give the mouse an hour&#8217;s worth of juice and a 90-minute charge will last two to four weeks, depending on how much you use it. The former proved to be true for me, but I didn&#8217;t have enough time to test the latter claim.</p>
<p>When I set this mouse onto the USB receiver for charging, it flashed a rapid green charging indicator light, which slowed after about a minute. Using a rechargeable mobile mouse means not worrying about getting stuck somewhere with dead batteries.</p>
<p>For those looking to have more control in the Windows 7 environment, Microsoft is bringing out in May an $80 model called the Touch Mouse. It will work specifically with Windows 7, using a touch surface that responds to gestures so as to perform tasks like docking, minimizing or maximizing and displaying the desktop. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s an awful lot like Apple&#8217;s $69 Magic Trackpad, a square surface that came out last summer and enables gestures within the Mac operating system for desktops. </p>
<p>Though these three mice are easy to port around and work well in a variety of work environments, they can&#8217;t replace many of the clever gestures built into so many laptops nowadays, especially Macs. But if you&#8217;re looking for comfort and function on the go, they do the trick.</p>

<p class="mailbox-question"><em> My Motorola Android phone does not work outside of the U.S. Does the Samsung Galaxy have the same problem? Will the forthcoming Verizon iPhone work in Europe?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p>I combined two reader questions here, because they both touch on a common source of confusion. I presume that the Motorola Android phone that only works in the U.S. is sold by either Verizon or Sprint, because they use network technology that is primarily found in the U.S., and not, say, in Europe. Thus, phone makers like Motorola and Samsung tailor their Verizon and Sprint models to this U.S.-centric technology, called CDMA. </p>
<p>However, both Motorola and Samsung also make Android phones for AT&#038;T and T-Mobile, which use a network technology called GSM that is standard in most of the rest of the world. These models should work outside of the U.S. There are a few &#8220;world phones&#8221; sold by Verizon and Sprint, which include both network technologies. For instance, Verizon sells two Android phones, the Droid Pro and the Droid 2 Global, which fall into that category.</p>
<p>As for the reported forthcoming Verizon iPhone, I don&#8217;t know if it will be limited to CDMA, which would make it essentially a U.S.-only device, or whether it will also be compatible with GSM, which would make it a world phone.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I live in South Africa, and want to buy the Samsung Tab to make my job easier, but to do that I must be able to work with Microsoft Excel documents. Editing and using dropdown boxes is essential. Can this be done?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> The Tab, and other Android devices, can view and edit Excel documents using either a built-in mobile office suite (ThinkFree was pre-installed on the Tab I tested) or one you can obtain through the Android Market, like Quickoffice. You can also use online spreadsheet apps. </p>
<p>However, as with the same or similar apps for the iPad, these are limited compared to using Excel on a PC or Mac, and I cannot say whether they&#8217;d have the features and two-way document fidelity you personally might require. I didn&#8217;t test editing Excel documents on the Tab.</p>
<p class="mailbox-q">Q:</p>
<p class="mailbox-question"><em> I am considering purchasing the iPad but have learned that it does not allow users to create folders in which documents can be stored. This would be incredibly useful for me for business purposes while I travel (i.e., separate client folders with client-specific documents in each). I have heard that Apple&#8217;s new operating system upgrade might make this possible, but I haven&#8217;t been able to confirm it. Do you happen to know whether that is the case?</em></p>
<p class="mailbox-a">A:</p>
<p> The new folder feature coming to the iPad is meant for grouping apps, not documents. Apple&#8217;s operating system for its mobile devices, called iOS, doesn&#8217;t have a global document folder capability.</p>
<p>However, individual iPad apps, such as the very powerful GoodReader, do allow you to create folders that can hold all manner of documents, and you can name and organize these folders as you wish. But these folders are only accessible from within the app that creates them.</p>

<p>Make no mistake&#8211;there are no definitive offers on the table to do a variety of takeover deals of Yahoo by either private equity moneybags or from big media giants such as News Corp. or smaller Web firms such as AOL.</p>
<p>But that does not mean that major players are not circling Yahoo (YHOO) and assessing the situation aggressively, a fact reflected in the rise in the Internet giant&#8217;s stock price today based on the many rumors swirling around it.</p>
<p>Despite being news to some, BoomTown had previously written about <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/could-aol-buy-yahoo-could-news-corp-takeover-2-0-with-a-little-help-from-the-chinas-alibaba">all these various scenarios, including interest from News Corp. and AOL</a>, after the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider">recent departure of a trio of top Yahoo media and sales execs</a> brought into sharp relief the pressure that CEO Carol Bartz is under to turn around the company.</p>
<p>Yahoo shares were up almost six percent to close at $15.25, a high of late. It is up to $16.20 in after-hours trading.</p>
<p>According to sources close to the situation, that&#8217;s because big PE firms such as Silver Lake Partners, as well as News Corp. (NWS), AOL (AOL) and others, all have their PowerPoints and speadsheets opened up to try to figure out if there is a deal to be made to buy all or a piece of Yahoo in the wake of corporate turmoil, slow revenue growth and weak stock under the leadership of CEO Carol Bartz.</p>
<p>Sources said the key players in the growing soap opera are the execs who run Yahoo-affiliated companies in Japan and China. That would be Masayoshi Son of Yahoo Japan and Jack Ma of the Alibaba Group.</p>
<p>Yahoo owns big and lucrative stakes in both companies, assets which make up a big part of the company&#8217;s current valuation.</p>
<p>The sale of those stakes is what has some investors interested, since&#8211;if thorny tax issues can be solved&#8211;it would make the purchase of part or all of the well-known Silicon Valley company very inexpensive in relative terms.</p>
<p>Sources added that any approach would have to be nonhostile, since Yahoo still has some stringent antitakeover provisions in place from a hostile attempt a few years ago by Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>But alternate CEOs to Bartz are part of the ruminations:</p>
<p>As I wrote two weeks ago, which was again reported today:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Most frequently mentioned by big investors in Yahoo: AOL (AOL) and its CEO Tim Armstrong.</p>
<p>Armstrong, said sources, has not shied away from the idea of Yahoo acquiring AOL and installing him as CEO with Bartz as chairman. AOL&#8217;s valuation is just $2.65 billion.</p>
<p>Although AOL has also been trying to turn itself around and is in a much less powerful position than Yahoo, Wall Street likes Armstrong’s story for AOL as a modern-day media and media distribution company.</p>
<p>&#8220;At least he has a narrative that is believable,&#8221; said one big investor in both companies. &#8220;Bartz has no vision.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Among the other credible candidates most mentioned: News Corp. digital head Jon Miller, if the media giant were part of any deal, and Juniper Networks (JNPR) CEO Kevin Johnson, who was the architect of the failed acquisition of Yahoo by Microsoft.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s interesting here is what the board&#8211;and, most specifically, co-founder and former CEO Jerry Yang&#8211;is doing now.</p>
<p>For certain, it is receiving an incoming flood of negative communications from big shareholders, most of whom are unhappy with Bartz&#8217;s management. One big investor recently told board members that their continued inaction in the face of all the trouble was unsettling.</p>
<p>One big event coming up is the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101007/next-yahoo-challenge-earnings-triumph-or-waterloo">third-quarter earnings report by Yahoo on Tuesday</a>, after the market closes.</p>
<p>If Yahoo&#8217;s sales remain<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/liveblogging-yahoos-second-quarter-earnings-call-how-do-you-solve-a-problem-like-flat-revenue/"> as flat as they were in the second quarter</a>, even with improved earnings, there will be even more scrutiny of Bartz to find growth.</p>
<p>And if Yahoo misses? Watch out.</p>
<p>One way might be via a big acquisition. Yahoo has recently been contemplating the local space, especially <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101008/yahoos-ma-strategy-maybe-local-commerce-rather-than-content-hello-groupon">social discounting phenom Groupon</a>. But the price would have to be high, sources said&#8211;well above $2 billion in cash and stock.</p>
<p>Would such a bold move be enough to keep the predators of Yahoo at bay? We&#8217;ll see, as the purple world turns.</p>
<p>A Yahoo PR person declined to comment on the stock rise.</p>
<p>Of course, rising on speculation, a higher stock is a problem for acquirers, as it makes Yahoo more expensive. Still, sources said a Yahoo deal of about $20 a share is entirely &#8220;doable.&#8221;</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Postbox, a program that sorts through your email and detects its contents, is a good option for someone who wants a fast search option built into email, writes Katherine Boehret.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For many people, email is the main way they communicate with friends, co-workers and family members. It contains bills, class assignments, trip itineraries, photos and love notes. But as much as it gets used every day, the software that we utilize to read and sort our email isn&#8217;t as clever or time-saving as it could be.</p>
<p>This week I tested Postbox 1.0, a program designed to handle your email in a smart, helpful manner. Starting Wednesday, this program is available at <a href="http://www.postbox-inc.com/">www.Postbox-Inc.com</a>. Postbox sorts through your email and detects its contents so you can see Web links, photos, contacts and other items themselves with one button click—whether Microsoft Word (MSFT) documents, PDFs or spreadsheets—without digging through messages. Since its inbox is constantly being indexed, all search queries return near-instant results.</p>

<p>Postbox&#8217;s founders come from Mozilla Corp., maker of the popular Firefox browser, so Postbox is based on Mozilla technology and its security standards. Email is indexed locally on your computer, so none of it is sent back across the Web to Postbox. It uses Content Tabs (tabs are another feature borrowed from Firefox) to help visually organize folders, messages and content extracted from those messages. It displays the most important elements of each message in a right-side panel. Received emails can even be edited so they aren&#8217;t sitting in your inbox with subject lines like, &#8220;Fw: Re: Re: Sept.&#8221; Instead, you can rewrite the subject to something like &#8220;Flight times.&#8221;</p>
<p>But this program isn&#8217;t free like Gmail, Hotmail or other Web-based email programs, nor does it come preloaded on a computer the way Apple Mail (AAPL) is on every Mac. Users can try Postbox for a free 30-day trial period after which each license costs $40, allowing one person to use their license on multiple computers (i.e. at work, at home, on a laptop). For another $20, a Family Pack option will give up to five family members use of Postbox. An additional $25 buys a Lifetime Upgrades plan that entitles you to receive free of charge any major version of Postbox that&#8217;s released; other nonmajor releases are free upgrades.</p>
<p>I used Postbox on a Mac and a Windows Vista computer, filling it up with thousands of emails from Gmail, Hotmail and .Mac accounts. It didn&#8217;t run properly on my company-issued computer, which is plugged into a network firewall. Postbox says it supports open protocols like IMPAP, POP and SMTP, and that it would work with Microsoft Exchange if Exchange were set to use those open protocols.</p>
<p>For all of Postbox&#8217;s terrific features, it can be hard to suddenly see your email in a different way since most of our email programs haven&#8217;t changed much in years. Outlook, for example, has plenty of hidden features that many people never learn how to use. Postbox seems to know how slow users are to adapt to change and so it reveals many of its features whenever it gets the chance.</p>
<p>For example, Postbox pops up an alert that shows you how to connect this email program to Facebook and Twitter so that you can post status updates or tweets without leaving your email. These connections also let Postbox try to pull one representative photo for each of your email contacts by matching a name in an email with someone&#8217;s Facebook or Twitter name—if you follow the person. It also uses photos assigned to contacts in the Mac OS X address book, which is used by Apple Mail.</p>
<p>Or take a feature in Postbox called Topics. This is a way of auto-organizing messages into different groups after you label them as being part of a certain topic, say &#8220;Mom&#8217;s Birthday.&#8221; All messages in an email conversation are grouped into &#8220;Mom&#8217;s Birthday,&#8221; as are any future responses to the same conversation. Postbox gives you three ways to label an email conversation as being part of a certain topic: from the toolbar, using a Topics button in the message header or by pressing &#8220;T&#8221; from within a message. You can also select a topic as you&#8217;re composing an email, pre-sorting that conversation into a designated topic.</p>
<p>Not everyone will like Topics because, however helpful the feature is, it makes the user do more work when he or she just want to get through a huge pile of unread emails. Labeling each email with a certain topic doesn&#8217;t take long, but it&#8217;s still an extra step. I would like Postbox to create automatic topics for sorting emails. For example, I recently sent and received at least 50 emails related to rescheduling tennis matches. Even though all the messages had the word &#8220;tennis&#8221; in them, not all of them were related to the same email, so they wouldn&#8217;t sort into the topic I created, &#8220;Tennis Make-Up.&#8221; Postbox says it has considered automatic options like these and may try to incorporate something similar in future versions of the product.</p>
<p>If my 30-day trial ran out tomorrow, I&#8217;d miss Postbox&#8217;s Inspector Bar the most. This feature works like a filter, instantly sucking out the most important parts in each email—including messages, attachments, images or links—and displaying them in a blue, right-side panel.</p>
<p>Another useful tool in Postbox is the Compose Sidebar. This also appears as a right-side panel but it shows up when someone is writing an email. This panel can display attachments, images, links or contacts found in all emails so you can simply drag and drop that item into your email as you&#8217;re composing it. This took me a while to get comfortable using because I&#8217;m so used to hunting through emails for things that I need to find. But once it became a habit, I found myself using the Compose Sidebar often.</p>
<p>If you have Postbox running in the background and you get an email, small notifications appear in the bottom left of your screen telling you which email account received the message and who sent it.</p>
<p>In the Content Tabs, which fill up with all attachments, images, links or contacts found in your indexed email, a feature called the Action Bar lets you save, send, or instantly glance at a document. This saves you from opening each email and its attachment, a process that sometimes requires opening a slow-to-open program to see the document. A slider in this Action Bar lets you adjust the size of images from small to large.</p>
<p>Postbox shines a unique light on email and the way we work with it every day. Not all of its features will come naturally for long-time users of the same email program. But for someone who wants a fast search option built into email, Postbox is a winner.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s no other major item most of us own that is as confusing, unpredictable and unreliable as our personal computers. Everybody has questions about them, and we aim to help.</p>
<p>Here are a few questions about computers I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability.</p>

<p class="question">I have a PC with Windows XP, which I bought because my computer guru said to stay away from Vista. I read your column saying upgrading from XP to the new Windows 7 will be much more cumbersome than doing so from Windows Vista. So, what should I do now? Upgrade to Vista for a while so I can then move more smoothly to 7? Or wait, buy a separate Windows 7 computer in the fall, and just transfer my files and applications from the XP computer?</p>
<p> Putting budget considerations aside, I think the latter course would make more sense. The new machine with Windows 7 preloaded will probably give you smoother performance than one you upgraded twice to new operating systems in a matter of months. But, bear in mind that you will have to reinstall all your applications on the new Windows 7 computer, and that, depending on the terms of the applications&#8217; licenses, you might even have to buy new copies. On the other hand, if you do the chain of upgrades, and don&#8217;t buy a new machine, you may be able to avoid this application problem, or at least much of it.</p>
<p class="question">I appreciated your review of the Clickfree automatic backup drive. Does the backup it creates include the various folders and subfolders for data such as photos, or does it just create a huge single list?</p>
<p> The Clickfree software is primarily designed to back up, display and restore your files by their types &#8212; photos, music, text, email, spreadsheets, etc. Once it has performed a backup it lets you view and restore your files by these types. However, it will display the tree of all your folders and allow you to specify where it should search for these files. It also allows you to back up and restore entire folders, such as your My Documents folder, regardless of their contents. <p class="question">I am planning to buy one of the products you recently reviewed &#8212; a Western Digital My Book &#8212; and attach it directly to a port on my Internet router. Can I install antispyware and antivirus programs on the drive? If not, how will the data on this drive be protected?</p>
<p> Nothing is perfectly secure. The bad guys are clever, and you never say never. However, since this product isn&#8217;t an actual PC running Windows, viruses and spyware programs can&#8217;t likely run directly on it. Still, if one of your computers contains malicious software, and it can see the contents of the network drive, then the data on the drive could be endangered. I know of no way to install or run security programs on the drive. But the security software on your PC may protect the drive, if it is able to handle external drives across a network. Also, the firewall built into your network router will help. The product has some security measures built in, such as encrypting files when you use the optional feature that allows you to access the drive&#8217;s contents across the Internet.</p>

Overseeing the event, dubbed &#8220;Google Searchology&#8221;: Udi Manber, VP of Search Engineering, and Marissa Mayer, VP of Search Products and User Experience.</p>
<p>Gabriel Stricker, Google’s Director of Search Communications kicks things off by noting that the company will be sharing a number of new developments that cater to the growing demands of its users. With that, Udi Manber takes the stage to offer a big-picture overview of search.</p>
<p>Manber says what Google does is the new “rocket science.” Search has to be fast, relevant, and fresh, he explains. But even that’s not enough. The real goal is to solve users&#8217; problems. If users can’t spell, it’s our problem. If the content is there but in a language the user doesn’t speak, that’s our problem. If the Web is too slow, it’s our problem. Manber offers a few examples of how Google works to address these challenges: real-time data, translation, etc. With these services nailed down, he says, Google can move on to the more important task of working on “understanding.”</p>

<p>Manber invites Pat Riley, senior search quality engineer, to the stage to talk a bit about Google’s “did you mean” link. Lots of people use the link, Riley says, and Google has been working to improve it. Called “spellmillion,” the project provides not only related results for a misspelled query but for alternate ones as well (think labor as in “work” and labor as in “pregnancy”). But it requires Google to process multiple searches for a single query and demands a lot of processing power.</p>
<p>Riley notes that the project has been somewhat contentious because it also potentially questions user intent. He offers the example of “Macy Ray.” Some users might be searching for “Macy Gray,” the singer, others for a person actually named “Macy Ray.” How do you address those two potential queries on a single search results page?</p>

<p>Riley is followed by Engineering Director Scott Huffman, whose subject is mobile search. Huffman starts things off with a few truisms. Mobile search is often local. It should be easy to use. Effortless. And it should provide all that Google has to offer. Huffman notes that this is quite a task since Google must optimize its search for different mobile experiences and different user interfaces: Google&#8217;s own Android, Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone, etc. Some of these platforms require gestures&#8211;touch, swipe&#8211;others use a keypad. All must provide access to the Web and the mobile Web&#8211;sites that have been optimized for mobile devices. On the screen behind him, Huffman displays an example of Google search that displays desktop Web results and mobile Web results, the latter denoted by a red square.</p>

<p>Mobile search must also be easy. Huffman demos a shared desktop-mobile search for a flight number. Since he’s logged into his Google account, his search for “ba 284? SF-London on the desktop is immediately shared with the Google app on his mobile device. An unreleased feature, but it’s on its way. A quick look at local listings automatically delivered to devices on the basis on GPS/cell tower location, and then Huffman brings Mayer on stage.</p>
<p>Mayer talks a bit about universal search before moving on to Google’s “bento box” of search results. She talks about Google’s focus on the importance of presentation and its efforts to make search results more usable for the user. An example of this SearchWiki, a tool that allows users to annotate their searches, to “keep their train of thought,” says Mayer. We need to help our users find more and do more with it, she says, noting that the company is still working to address some longstanding user problems:</p>
<ul>
<li>Finding recent information</li>
<li>Expressing that you want just one type of result</li>
<li>Assessing which results are best</li>
<li>Knowing what you’re looking for</li>
<li>Expressing your searches in keywords</li>
</ul>

Mayer introduces Google Search Options, a feature that appends a search option panel to results, allowing users to “slice and dice” the results as they choose. A demo of the feature, in a search for “Hubble Telescope,” allows for search calibration by time, pages that include images, etc. Another search for “solar oven” is filtered down to specific genres&#8211;videos, discussion forums, reviews. Click on those links and that new search context is immediately displayed on the page.</p>
<p>Interestingly, the reviews feature uses something called “sentiment analysis” to extract sentiments from a review and present them in displayed snippets.</p>

<p>Search Options also includes a timeline feature that allows users to visualize results over time. And there&#8217;s something called “Wonder Wheel,” which presents a visual representation of a query surrounded by potential refinements (hence “Wonder Wheel”). Click on a refinement and results update automatically. Search Options should be going live now, says Mayer.</p>

<p>A bit of geometry monomania here today at Google Searchology. First the Wonder Wheel and now “Google Squared,” a sort of spreadsheet visualization of search being cooked up in Google Labs. Unstructured data pulled directly from search and organized according to the whim of the user. A search for “small dogs” pulls up a lists of&#8211;wonder of wonders&#8211;small dogs organized by size, weight, breed, etc. Click on an individual cell and you can change its source. Pretty slick. Still a work in progress, though. It should be available later this month, Mayer says during the Q&#038;A.</p>
<p>Another new feature: Rich Snippets. A search for “drooling dog BBQ” returns your standard Google results along with a list of metadata&#8211;average user reviews, for example. A search for a GPS system includes an additional pointer to a recent CNET review of the unit in question. Rich Snippets is open API, incidentally.<br />

<p>Last up, an Android star map app that uses GPS to create a star map “local to your place on earth” and to your position. Move the phone and the map adjusts to your view&#8211;essentially the app transforms the device into map overlay for the sky. And how does this tie into search? Search for “Gemini” and a sort of pointer appears onscreen directing you to its location in the sky. And with that, Mayer wraps things up.</p>

The next iteration of Keynote, Apple&#8217;s presentation application, offers some new object transition features: object zoom, a swing transition (Schiller demos it with a Bush-to-Obama slide that gets a laugh from the audience). <p>Pages, Apple&#8217;s word processing application, is also getting a bit of an update. Pages &rsquo;09 offers a full-screen view for the easily distracted writer, dynamic outlining, mail merge with Numbers&#8211;Apple&#8217;s spreadsheet program&#8211;and 40 new templates. Not the most exciting stuff, here, but decent additions nonetheless.</p>
<p>In Numbers, Apple (AAPL) has added some new categorization features&#8211;Table Categories, and, answering user requests, some 250 new formulas and functions. New charts, trend lines and other advance reporting options as well.</p>
<p>iWork is also migrating from the desktop to the cloud&#8211;in a sense. Via iWork.com, users can easily upload documents and share them with collaborators. Docs are viewable online. They can be downloaded. And collaborators can comment on them online. iWork.com is cross-platform (Mac and PC) and cross-browser. The online suite looks very much like the Mac-based suite.</p>
<p>iWork will run you $79, $49 if you purchase a new Mac. &#8220;This is the beginning of a new service,&#8221; Schiller noted, adding that it&#8217;s a beta and launches today, solo and as part of a $169 box set that includes iLife and Leopard.</p>
