Square Expands Into Asia With Japan Launch

Square, the digital payments company, is launching in Japan, the company announced on Thursday. Japanese merchants can get a Square Reader for free and can start accepting payments with it for 3.25 percent of each transaction. The launch comes a day after Square confirmed to AllThingsD that Alyssa Cutright, its vice president of international, left the company in March after just one year on the job. Cutright oversaw Square’s launch in its one other international market, Canada. Square’s arrival in Japan comes one year after PayPal announced that its Square competitor PayPal Here would be available in the Asian country.

Square Hires Former Obama Cabinet Member Demetrios Marantis

Commerce startup Square landed another key hire Wednesday, tapping Demetrios J. Marantis to oversee its international and regulatory policy. Marantis, a former member of President Barack Obama’s cabinet, served as the country’s top trade official before making the leap to Square, so he’s particularly well suited for the job of overseeing government and policy work related to the company’s international expansion. Marantis’s hire is Square’s second high-level appointment in as many weeks. Last week, Alex Petrov, a former PayPal exec, signed on as the company’s VP of Partnerships.

Square Snags PayPal Exec for VP of Partnerships Position

Square announced Wednesdaythat it has hired Alex Petrov for its new vice president of partnerships position, where he’ll focus on business development and customer acquisition for the commerce startup. Before his new gig, Petrov was the VP of retail marketing at PayPal, where he was responsible for launching PayPal in offline environments (a pretty appropriate skill set for Square).

Square Beefs Up Its Register for Restaurants

Commerce startup Square on Monday rolled out an update to its Register product, the software given freely to merchants to use as a point-of-sale system in conjunction with the Square card reader. The update makes the software more amenable to short-order restaurants by giving them the ability to create customized kitchen tickets and order modifications, essentially an attempt to make its software useful to more types of businesses in the SMB demographic.
