Retailers to Miss Tablet Party

Chain stores will likely miss out on their usual share of “hot gadget” sales this holiday season as most consumers opt to buy top-selling tablets directly from Apple Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. instead of from big retailers.

Paul Allen’s Suit Against Tech Industry: Take Two

Paul Allen’s Interval Licensing has revived a patent lawsuit against a number of tech companies, including Google and Apple, filing a new set of court papers on Tuesday. Allen sued Google, Apple, AOL, eBay, Facebook, Netflix, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples and Yahoo in August, but the case was dismissed earlier this month, with Tuesday set as the deadline for Interval to file an amended complaint. As noted by open source industry blogger Florian Mueller, the new claims include allegations that Android infringes on Interval patents, adding to a growing list of legal claims being leveled in the mobile arena.

Judge Deals Paul Allen a Setback in Patent

Billionaire investor Paul Allen’s patent lawsuit against some of the biggest names in high technology ran into a stumbling block as a federal judge in Seattle dismissed the complaint for not describing its allegations specifically enough.

What iPad Problem? Citi Boosts Kindle Estimates

Citigroup’s Mark Mahaney is bullish enough about the Kindle to boost his sales estimates for this year and 2011. He now predicts Amazon will sell 5 million units in 2010, generating $2.3 billion and 7 percent of the e-commerce giant’s revenues.

Best Buy to Start Selling Kindle This Fall

Sure, the Kindle is available at Target and Staples, but with the addition of Amazon’s popular device to its lineup this fall, Best Buy will be the only retailer to sell all three leading e-readers. Consumers will be able to handle and compare Sony’s Reader devices, Barnes & Noble’s Nook and Amazon’s Kindle side by side, and the store will support its expanded lineup with prominent in-store displays.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt: “I Have a Special Spot for Apple in My Heart”

Eric Schmidt’s tender feelings for Apple won’t stop Google from competing directly with Apple’s iPhone: The company spent much of the time on its Q4 earnings call discussing its large mobile ambitions–without talking about specifics, of course. Meanwhile, the search giant posted a big jump in quarterly revenue. But not enough for twitchy investors, who are pushing shares down in after-hours trading.

Can Big-Box Merchants Fix Your Computer?

Back in the old days–say, 2006–when we needed a computer repaired, we turned to the shop down the street. These were tech-minded guys who seemed to have too much time on their hands, but who could still never fix our busted laptop soon enough.

Sony’s Kindle Competition: Touchscreen Plus AT&T, for $399

Sony did indeed have a bit of news to announce at the New York Public Library: Its most direct challenge to Amazon’s Kindle to date. Like the Kindle, the “Daily” reader will feature a wireless connection–Sony will use AT&T, while Amazon uses Sprint. And unlike current versions of the Kindle, the Sony device will feature a touchscreen. But it will come at a price: The device will retail in December for $399. That’s $100 more than the current price of Amazon’s Kindle 2. And that price point is almost certain to drop in coming months.
