			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It is time for spring cleaning, or as I think of it, my yearly chance to shove old technology products to the back of my storage closet. Instead, this should be a chance to take advantage of companies&#8217; stepped-up recycling efforts. </p>

<p>Last year, 460 million pounds of electronics were collected and recycled in the U.S., a 53 percent increase from 2010, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. </p>
<p>People know they should recycle their old or unwanted technology products, but they don&#8217;t know where to begin. So this week, I did the dirty work, rounding up details from eight major companies about their recycling programs, including fees, dropoff locations, acceptable products, shipping options, haul-away services and personal-data-wiping solutions. Readers: Your days of pack-rat procrastinating are numbered. </p>
<p>Best Buy&#8217;s recycling program is made up of four categories: in-store kiosks for ink and toner cartridges, rechargeable batteries, wires, cords and cables; free removal and recycling of an appliance or TV when a new appliance or TV is delivered; home pickup of two appliances or two TVs for $100 with a $20 charge for additional units; and <a href="http://BestBuy.com/tradein">BestBuy.com/tradein</a> for trading gently used electronics for Best Buy gift cards. The store&#8217;s Geek Squad offers services like removing a PC&#8217;s hard drive before handing it over to be recycled. </p>
<p>Apple invites its customers to bring all batteries and iPods into its 247 U.S. stores for recycling, and any iPod (except the iPod shuffle) can be turned in for a 10 percent discount on a new iPod. People also can opt to ship their old products off to be recycled free by filling out a form found at <a href="http://Apple.com/recycling">Apple.com/recycling</a>; Apple contracts with a company called PowerON to do this recycling. Acceptable products include desktop or notebook Windows PCs and Macs, iPads, iPhones as well as any make or type of mobile phone. If the product is worth something, you&#8217;ll get an Apple gift card. </p>

<p>Amazon doesn&#8217;t charge people to recycle its Kindle e-readers or Kindle batteries, and this includes non-working and working units. People can print free UPS labels for shipping their old Kindles to be recycled on <a href="http://ecotakeback.com/kindle">ecotakeback.com/kindle</a>; they then simply drop the Kindles off at a UPS store. Amazon wipes all identifying marks or personal documents from these Kindles. Further details can be found at <a href="http://amzn.to/JkilQX">amzn.to/JkilQX</a>. If Kindles are in good condition, customers can opt to trade them in for Amazon gift cards via the company&#8217;s Electronic Trade-In program. </p>
<p>HP&#8217;s new partnership with Staples offers a physical location where people can drop off HP and non-HP consumer products for recycling. The Staples stores will accept a variety of products, including laptops, monitors, mice, fax machines and GPS devices, though not televisions. People who recycle printer cartridges can earn Staples rewards points toward store merchandise. FedEx Office stores also serve as dropoff locations for products that will be shipped off for recycling: HP and Compaq products can be shipped using a free pre-printed voucher found at <a href="http://HP.com/recycling">HP.com/recycling</a>, but shipping vouchers for other brands of consumer products will cost $10 to $25. </p>
<p>Dell&#8217;s recycling program includes free home pickup and FedEx shipping options, but these are only for Dell products; details can be found at <a href="http://Dell.com/recycle">Dell.com/recycle</a>. If a customer buys a new Dell product, the company will take the old one, even if it isn&#8217;t Dell-branded, though the buyer must remember to select &#8220;free recycling&#8221; when buying. Dell&#8217;s partnership with Goodwill helped the company create its Dell Reconnect program, which lets people drop off old computer electronics at Goodwill stores such as PCs, laptops, tablets and keyboards, but not mobile phones. At Goodwill, someone will inspect the products to decide whether they can be reused, refurbished or recycled. If the products are reused or refurbished, they&#8217;ll be sold at Goodwill. </p>
<p>People with Samsung products can use free mail-back shipping options via one of three links: <a href="http://Samsung.com/starus">Samsung.com/starus</a> for toner cartridges, <a href="http://mobile.samsungusa.com/recycling">mobile.samsungusa.com/recycling</a> for mobile products, or <a href="http://www.oemtakeback.com/samsung">www.oemtakeback.com/samsung</a> for all other Samsung products. Samsung and non-Samsung products also can be dropped off at more than 1,000 locations listed on this website: <a href="http://Samsung.com/recyclingdirect">Samsung.com/recyclingdirect</a>. </p>
<p>Sony accepts its brand of products for free recycling at about 850 dropoff centers; some of the centers also offer free recycling for other manufacturers&#8217; products. Sony also offers free shipping and recycling only for Sony products as long as they weigh less than 25 pounds and the person shipping lives more than 25 miles away from a dropoff center. Sony and other brands of products can, if eligible, be traded in for purchasing new Sony products. Eligibility and details on Sony dropoff locations can be found at <a href="http://Sony.com/ecotrade">Sony.com/ecotrade</a>. </p>
<p>Microsoft Stores, of which there are 16 nationwide, offer free in-store recycling of cellphones, rechargeable phone batteries and computers. If the item has value, which is determined by its age, condition and current market value, customers will receive Microsoft store gift cards; items eligible for this include all smartphones, computers and gaming consoles, including Xbox. Xbox owners can ship and recycle their Microsoft hardware using prepaid shipping forms at <a href="http://bit.ly/Kjk6xk">http://bit.ly/Kjk6xk</a>. Microsoft stores offer services to wipe personal data from products before recycling, although there may be a cost for this depending on whether the customer is doing a trade-in, upgrade or just recycling.</p>

<p>Originally known for selling books, the Seattle company is adding 14 new categories, including &#8220;test, measure and inspect,&#8221; &#8220;janitorial and sanitation,&#8221; &#8220;office,&#8221; &#8220;cutting tools and hydraulics,&#8221; &#8220;pneumatics&#8221; and &#8220;plumbing.&#8221;</p>
<p>The categories go way beyond the stock carried by Office Depot and Staples, and will likely compete against other online- or catalog-based suppliers. AmazonSupply inventory includes hand dryers, drill bits, printer paper, cash registers and many more-obscure products.</p>
<p>The Web site itself has an industrial feel, with very little art or illustration and a fairly extensive browsable index of products.</p>
<p>Prentis Wilson is listed as the VP of AmazonSupply, which offers such perks as free shipping on eligible orders of $50 or more, 365-day returns, corporate lines of credit and a dedicated customer-service center.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-188534" title="johnny5" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/03/johnny5-185x285.jpg" alt="" width="185" height="285" />Yesterday, Amazon announced it paid $775 million in cash for <a href="http://www.kivasystems.com/">Kiva Systems</a>, the maker of little orange robots that help automate warehouses.</p>
<p>Today, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KRjuuEVEZs">a video of Kiva&#8217;s CEO Mick Mountz</a>, who appeared at a Wired business conference, was being passed around the Twitter-verse. </p>
<p>In the clip, he depicted a day in the life of a Kiva robot, comparing complex routes one takes on the warehouse floor to &#8220;highways&#8221; and a grid that was set up like Manhattan with North and South avenues.</p>
<p>He even gave the robots &#8212; all males, I noticed &#8212; some personality.</p>
<p>They can&#8217;t really be compared to Number 5 in &#8220;Short Circuit,&#8221; which had super expressive eyebrows, but you can&#8217;t help but think these more modern, practical versions, are cute, too.</p>
<p>For example, Mountz said, one robot that rocked back and forth on its way to its parking spot had some &#8220;swagger.&#8221; And, after a particularly taxing trip, a robot returned to base for a &#8220;five-minute drink off the charger.&#8221;</p>
<p>All joking aside, the huge benefit of these robots is their efficiency, something Amazon &#8212; with roughly 70 distribution centers &#8212; doesn&#8217;t take lightly. In well-orchestrated routes, the machines will expertly zigzag their way across a floor, picking up racks of inventory that are then brought back to real humans, who pick up the items and pack them in boxes.</p>
<p>Kiva&#8217;s clients include companies like The Gap, Saks Fifth Avenue, Amazon-owned Diapers.com, Staples, Walgreens and Crate and Barrel. Mountz, who founded Kiva Systems nine years ago, knows a thing or two about packing boxes on a warehouse floor. The executive previously worked at grocery delivery service Webvan, which was one of the bigger dotcom flops in history.</p>

<p>That is bad news for companies such as Best Buy Co., Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Staples Inc., all of which are counting on tablets and e-readers to lure shoppers in to their brick-and-mortar stores.</p>
<p>Retailers see the devices as their best weapon against falling television prices and a lack of exciting new gadgets this Christmas season. They plan to offer a broad range of tablets and e-readers for consumers to comparison shop in stores.</p>

Beginning today, the 16GB model is now available for $299, the 32GB for $399, and the 64GB for $499. </p>
<p>Quite a discount. Question is, will anyone care? At $299, the 16GB PlayBook is still $100 more than Amazon&#8217;s new $199 Kindle Fire. And as I noted here earlier this morning, the Fire is <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110929/the-kindle-fire-isnt-an-ipad-killer-its-non-ipad-tablet-mauler/">a pretty compelling proposition</a> for consumers looking at 7-inch tablets like the PlayBook.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Billionaire investor Paul Allen&#8217;s patent lawsuit against some of the biggest names in high technology ran into a stumbling block as a federal judge in Seattle dismissed the complaint for not describing its allegations specifically enough.</p>
<p>U.S. District Judge Marsha Pechman on Friday set a Dec. 28 deadline for the plaintiff, a company controlled by Mr. Allen called Interval Licensing LLC, to file an amended complaint. A spokesman for Mr. Allen said it plans to do so soon, calling the judge&#8217;s order a &#8220;procedural issue&#8221; that won&#8217;t halt the case.</p>
<p>The suit, filed in August, names tech companies Google Inc., its YouTube subsidiary, Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Yahoo Inc., AOL Inc., eBay Inc. and Netflix Inc., as well as OfficeMax Inc. and Staples Inc., as defendants. The complaint accuses them of infringing four patents covering technology developed at Interval Research Corp., a Palo Alto, Calif., lab and technology incubator that Mr. Allen financed but that closed down about a decade ago. Mr. Allen is a co-founder of Microsoft Corp.</p>

Including marketing executives at Amazon, apparently, who have assembled an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100914/viral-video-abusing-the-apple-ipad/">oddly defensive TV ad</a> extolling their device&#8217;s virtues.</p>
<p>Chill out, says Citigroup&#8217;s Mark Mahaney. The analyst is bullish enough about the Kindle to boost his sales estimates for this year and 2011. Mahaney now thinks Amazon (AMZN) will sell 5 million units in 2010, up from an earlier estimate of 3.9 million; he predicts sales of 8.4 million units in 2011, up from an earlier target of 5.2 million units.</p>
<p>Why the bump? Because the Kindle has grown cheaper and cheaper since its 2007 introduction (click images to enlarge).</p>
<p><a rel="lightbox" href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/10/kindle-price-history.png"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-24099" title="kindle price history" src="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/files/2010/10/kindle-price-history.png" alt="" width="350" height="255" /></a></p>
<p>And because it&#8217;s easier and easier to buy a Kindle. Until this year if you wanted to buy the device you were forced to order online. But now Amazon is retailing them via brick and mortar retailers, too: Target (TGT), Best Buy (BBY) and Staples. That&#8217;s a total of some 4,300 stores in the U.S., and that&#8217;s a good thing.</p>
<p>More Kindles sold means more e-book titles sold, so Mahaney has bumped up those numbers, too. He assumes that each Kindle device represents two books sold per month, and that Amazon will sell 128 million units in 2010, and 271 million in 2011.</p>
<p>Note that even when a potential Kindle buyer grabs an iPad instead, it&#8217;s not the end of the world for Amazon, because it can sell e-book titles to iPad owners, too. (In fact, <a href="http://www.techflash.com/seattle/2010/10/amazon_starts_selling_ipad.html">Amazon has begun selling the iPad itself</a>.)</p>
<p>And the retailer still holds a huge edge on Apple in terms of available catalog. Mahaney says that 100 percent of the New York Times fiction and non-fiction best sellers are available on Amazon, versus 60 percent in Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iBooks format (that&#8217;s down from 63 percent earlier this year).</p>

<p>Bottom line is that Mahaney thinks Kindle revenues will total $2.3 billion in 2010 and $3.6 billion in 2011. That&#8217;s 7 percent and 8.5 percent of total revenues&#8211;&#8221;successfully material to Amazon&#8217;s P&amp;L,&#8221; as he notes.</p>
<p>Perhaps even big enough for Amazon itself to start breaking out Kindle business numbers to its investors, instead of its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100825/amazon-says-new-kindle-is-fastest-selling-ever/">comically oblique press releases</a>.</p>

This antenna-enhanced box sends data to and from desktops, laptops, smart phones and TiVos (TIVO) throughout the house. Its indicator lights glow, signaling all is well with the network. </p>

<p>But setting it up can be a major ordeal. People beg their techie friends for help. Some sit for hours on the phone with customer support. A few brave souls muddle through a sea of acronyms and secure codes in an attempt to install the router. Once it is set up, many are afraid to change its settings for fear of disrupting it and losing Internet connectivity.</p>
<p>Enter Valet (<a href="http://thevalet.com/">TheValet.com</a>), a new wireless router designed for people who are tired of being intimidated by a blinking box. Valet is designed by the people who brought us the Flip video camcorders, the ultra simple handhelds with ultra simple software that just work. And it comes from Cisco (CSCO), which also owns Linksys—a router brand that people know and trust.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve been using Valet for the past week, but it took me only 10 minutes, from start to finish, to get it going, thanks to a simple USB key that plugs into the computer and sets everything up in the background in less than five minutes. I tried it on a Windows 7 PC running and on an iMac, as well as on mobile devices, including a BlackBerry, Palm (PALM) Pre and the HTC HD2. The Valet is available Wednesday for $100 on Amazon.com (AMZN), TheValet.com and Staples (SPLS) stores. Over the next two weeks, it will be sold at Best Buy (BBY), Target (TGT) and Wal-Mart (WMT). There&#8217;s also the $150 Valet Plus, with a Wi-Fi range about 20% greater than the Valet.</p>
<p>I ran into a bug while trying to install the Valet software on a Mac: I plugged in the USB key but its built-in software didn&#8217;t install and I got a message telling me that Valet wasn&#8217;t able to set up on my computer. A Cisco representative said this was a rare Mac bug that will be fixed over this week and next week.</p>
<p>Along with its simple setup, Valet automatically creates a guest network to go with the main network so visitors can log onto a household&#8217;s Wi-Fi—either with or without a password, depending on settings—and not gain access to files shared within that network. The Valet software has parental controls that make it a cinch to set up restrictions like blocking certain Web sites or cutting off Internet access after a certain time on school nights or weekends. </p>

<p>The Valet isn&#8217;t the first router to enable parental controls and guest-network access. Apple Inc.&#8217;s (AAPL) $179 AirPort Extreme Base Station allows users to set up guest networks. Likewise, Netgear&#8217;s (NTGR) six most recently introduced routers, priced from $70 to $190, offer guest networks and parental controls. But just as the Flip camera&#8217;s built-in software simplified the process of editing, uploading and sharing home videos, the Valet&#8217;s software makes networking approachable for anyone—regardless of technical skill.</p>
<p>The Valet comes in a box with a USB Easy Setup Key, wireless router, Ethernet cable and power adapter (the last two are hidden under the box&#8217;s interior packaging). Instructions on the box told me to plug the USB key into a PC or Mac. Then on-screen directions popped up, instructing me to plug the Valet router into the wall with the power adapter and then into my home&#8217;s modem using the Ethernet cable. I selected the &#8220;connect&#8221; option on the computer screen, and four minutes later, the network was set up. </p>
<p>The device&#8217;s software, called Cisco Connect, is divided into four categories: Computers &#038; Devices, Parental Controls, Guest Access and Settings. With these, I could quickly see how many devices were connected to my network and learn the name and password for the guest network if I forgot it. (Valet networks have pre-set, randomly selected names and passwords that people can easily change. My network&#8217;s default name was RubyPanda and its password was mango62—both simple word/number combinations that are easy to remember.) If the guest network is password-protected, guests have to enter that password on a Web browser page, like at a hotel. This could be confusing for people used to entering network passwords at the operating-system level, right as they select the Wi-Fi network. A Cisco representative said using a Web browser page is a more consistent way of entering passwords and it saves people from having to answer questions they may not be able to answer if they&#8217;re logging onto the main network, like the name of the &#8220;WPA key.&#8221;</p>
<p>If people get stuck during setup, which happened with me when I ran into the Mac bug, a screen immediately displays a customer-service number for Valet that&#8217;s available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I spoke to a woman who tried several troubleshooting methods, but she didn&#8217;t know about Valet&#8217;s rare Mac bug. Once a computer is set up with the Valet network, the USB key can be taken to other computers to update them with the same network passwords and settings. </p>
<p>Using the parental controls couldn&#8217;t have been easier. After a password is set up, Web content can be blocked at a teen or child level on some or all devices. Specific sites can be blocked, and when I blocked Facebook on a connected Mac, it wouldn&#8217;t open on that computer without the parent password. Time restrictions on Internet usage can be set up here, with different settings for school nights and weekends.</p>
<p>Though the $100 Cisco Valet is more than twice as expensive as some wireless routers, its built-in software puts great emphasis on simplicity and ease of use, and turns setting up and using a a home network into an unusually pleasant experience.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/05/schmidtdif.jpg" alt="schmidtdif" title="schmidtdif" width="300" height="204" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-17211" />A first peek at <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1288776/000119312510009730/dex991.htm">Google&#8217;s Q4 earnings report</a>: Revenue in line and a nice earnings bump. The search giant reported revenue of $4.95 billion and earnings of $6.79 per share. <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=GOOG">The Street</a> was looking for revenue of $4.9 billion and $6.50 in earnings per share, per Yahoo (YHOO). (I&#8217;ve also seen lower &#8220;consensus&#8221; numbers for EPS in the $6.45-$6.48 range).</p>
<p>Google (GOOG) stock has lurched five percent lower in the first few minutes of after-hours trading, as investors digest the news. If you want to anthropomorphize the market, you might speculate that it&#8217;s bummed that CEO Eric Schmidt and company didn&#8217;t show a higher revenue lift. But if you&#8217;re keeping track, revenue is up 17 percent compared with last year, and up 12 percent from the previous quarter.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m trying out a promising new liveblog tool, but please bear with me if there are bumps along the way.</p>
<p>On the call: CEO Eric Schmidt, CFO Patrick Pichette, product guy Jonathan Rosenberg, sales boss Nikesh Arora. No Larry or Sergey.</p>
<p>Schmidt declares that he&#8217;s very pleased with Q4: &#8220;An extraordinary end to a roller coaster year.&#8221;</p>
<p>Schmidt: Clearly, we were right to start ramping up investments and will continue to do so. We&#8217;re investing in people and investing in tech based on our &#8220;70/20/10&#8243; rule: 70 percent in core products, 20 percent in new business like mobile/Android, and 10 percent in &#8220;long view&#8221; initiatives like commerce and social.</p>
<p>And of course, more mergers and acquisitions. We&#8217;re continuing on a pace of roughly one M&#038;A per month, some small, some big.</p>
<p>Pichette runs through the numbers in the release above. He reiterates Schmidt&#8217;s line about continuing investments.</p>
<p>Jonathan Rosenberg has a cold, but gets his message across: &#8220;We made some very hard decisions&#8221; to shut down some products to focus on winners. It&#8217;s our &#8220;more wood behind fewer arrows approach.&#8221; We&#8217;re focusing on DoubleClick integration, Android expansion and the Chrome OS. &#8220;YouTube, is in fact, monetizing well,&#8221; and we hope our partners make money, too.</p>
<p>Obviously, going forward, we&#8217;re going to plow resources into search. But other stuff too. Social, for instance. Not just social networking, but all of our products should be &#8220;social.&#8221; This can apply to search, local search, etc. We&#8217;re also focusing on commerce, whether people are making their purchases online or offline.</p>
<p>More Rosenberg: Mobile is important, and so is moving enterprise to the cloud.</p>
<p>Arora: We improved throughout the year, and Q4 was strong. Large companies like Staples (SPLS) and Volvo are directing an increasing portion of spending online [as they're supposed to do].</p>
<p>Arora: Search ads are always a value in December! Costs go up but they get more effective because people buy more.</p>
<p>Arora: Brand marketers are increasing their spending too. YouTube has had many successful brand campaigns. Have you seen Fox&#8217;s &#8220;Avatar&#8221; ads? They&#8217;re great. Other shoutouts for Sony (SNE) and American Express (AXP).</p>
<p>Arora: Most of the top networks have signed onto AdX ad exchange since we launched it in the fall.</p>
<p>Time for Q&#038;A.</p>
<p><strong>Google&#8217;s U.S. revenue had a big jump, but international revenue did not accelerate as quickly. What gives?</strong></p>
<p>Arora: In the U.S., we saw large advertisers shifting offline to online. Other markets have different issues; hence, the different growth rates.</p>
<p><strong>Are we back to normal in regard to seasonal patterns? Also, can you talk about &#8220;materiality&#8221; of mobile?</strong></p>
<p>Pichette: We won&#8217;t talk about mobile revenue in any concrete way.</p>
<p>Arora: There is some different performance by vertical. Finance, obviously, isn&#8217;t as strong as it used to be.</p>
<p><strong>Another question about mobile: Is Google trying to push revenue? Profitability? Also, please talk about China.</strong></p>
<p>Rosenberg: Advertisers are starting to figure out what works on mobile. For instance, adding a phone number or an offer for mobile helps a lot.</p>
<p>Pichette: Regarding mobile, we want to drive innovation that in turn drives people to the Web, which is better for us. That&#8217;s the core engine of mobile.</p>
<p>Schmidt: &#8220;China stuff has been well-covered in the press,&#8221; the CEO notes before recounting the China story. &#8220;We&#8217;re in conversations with the Chinese government,&#8221; and our business has remained unchanged. &#8220;But in a reasonably short time, we&#8217;ll be making some changes there.&#8221; That said, we&#8217;d still like to be in China.</p>
<p>Missed a question. Apologies.</p>
<p><strong>Please talk about outperformance of network business vs. owned and operated. Also, what accounts for higher marketing costs?</strong></p>
<p>Pichette: Nothing to talk about re: network versus O&#038;O. Re expenses, we said we were going to ramp up investment and we put in more there because we can track the results and the return on investment.</p>
<p>Arora: Yep, some of that money was to support consumer launches.</p>
<p><strong>You said search increased five times on mobile. So what does that mean for revenue per search? Also, please talk more about increased spending on marketing.</strong></p>
<p>Pichette: We&#8217;re really pleased with the marketing experiments we&#8217;re running.</p>
<p>Rosenberg: Regarding mobile, the new formats, targeting tools and reporting we&#8217;re giving mobile advertisers is making a huge difference. But I won&#8217;t answer your question about revenue.</p>
<p>Missed another question here.</p>
<p><strong>YouTube monetization: Can you give us some metrics on how much inventory you&#8217;re selling?</strong></p>
<p>Arora: Nope. But it has &#8220;gone from being a nice-to-have&#8221; to essential.</p>
<p>Pichette: The Youtube homepage nearly sold out in Q4. Hope that&#8217;s useful.</p>
<p><strong>Can you break out ad spending by advertiser size?</strong></p>
<p>Arora: Large advertisers are moving online, which is good. Retail was strong in Q4. We&#8217;re working with smaller advertisers to &#8220;bring them into the fray.&#8221; But the discrepancy so far has been mainly seasonal.</p>
<p><strong>Can you rank your core businesses in terms of growth potential? Also, what&#8217;s up with you and Apple (AAPL)?</strong></p>
<p>Schmidt: We&#8217;ve been saying for a while that display is a big opportunity. One story you haven&#8217;t seen so far is how successful we&#8217;ve been in display, but that will come out in 2010. [Note to PR staff: Start pitching!]</p>
<p>And obviously, mobile is small now but will grow quickly.</p>
<p>&#8220;With respect to Apple, it&#8217;s probably better to say&#8221;&#8230;that as a former board member &#8220;I have a special spot for Apple in my heart.&#8221; They&#8217;re a very well run company and &#8220;they have some very good stuff coming&#8221; strong competitor, etc.</p>
<p>Schmidt on Nexus One: What it is really about is a new way of buying a phone. Nexus One itself is the first in a series of examples where you can buy the phone online and pick your carrier.</p>
<p><strong>Is Bing having an impact on cost per click?</strong></p>
<p>Rosenberg: We think out CPCs are generally not affected by competitors. Prices are set by buyers.</p>
<p><strong>Can you talk about Nexus One&#8217;s impact on margin?</strong></p>
<p>Pichette. Not really. We want to innovate, etc. Nexus One will have its own margin and that&#8217;s how we&#8217;re focused on building the business.</p>
<p><strong>We&#8217;ve seen third-party data on mobile projecting that iPhone could account for 50 percent of mobile traffic. Does that make sense to you? Also, you have said that the Apple relationship is &#8220;stable.&#8221; So what are the odds that you&#8217;re going to continue to provide search on the iPhone?</strong></p>
<p>Schmidt: We won&#8217;t talk about the market share of Apple. And we won&#8217;t &#8220;speculate about any deals of any kind&#8211;true, not true, rumored, not rumored.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Given that new display products are so great, is there any notion that people are moving dollars from search to display?</strong></p>
<p>Schmidt: Advertisers &#8220;don&#8217;t shift, they add.&#8221; They might maximize search to maximize revenue and they might spend on display for long-term growth, branding, etc.</p>
<p>Pichette thanks Googlers listening for all their hard work. There&#8217;s an auxilary call at 6 pm Eastern with Pichette and Rosenberg, but I won&#8217;t be able to cover that one.</p>

<p>Now, the local shops face big competition. In 2008, Office Depot Inc. (ODP) rolled out its Tech Depot service at its stores nationwide. &#8220;Let our techs get your PC to operate at peak performance,&#8221; the company touts, saying that it can handle everything from basic software installations to major repairs and upgrades. Staples Inc., (SPLS) the office-supply retail chain, expanded its EasyTech computer services to all of its stores in 2007.</p>
<p>And electronics retail giant Best Buy Co. (BBY) is seeing its seven-year-old joint operating agreement with the Geek Squad, a technology-service provider that focuses especially on computers, continue to flourish. Its national service center, Geek Squad City near Louisville, Ky., receives about 1,500 repair and other orders daily.</p>

<p>NEW YORK, August 25, 2009  Delivering on its promise to give consumers a variety of choices, Sony today announced the third member of its new Reader family&#8211;the Reader Daily Edition™, a highly-anticipated wireless model with 3G connectivity. The Daily Edition caps its new line of Reader products, joining the Reader Pocket Edition™ and the Reader Touch Edition™ which were announced earlier this month.<br />
The Reader Pocket Edition and the Reader Touch Edition are available immediately, and the Reader Daily Edition will be available this December in time for the holidays at SonyStyle stores and SonyStyle.com.<br />
&#8220;We firmly believe consumers should have choice in every aspect of their digital reading experience,&#8221; said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division. &#8220;Today, we take another large stride to deliver on that promise. We now have the most affordable devices on the market, the greatest access to free and affordable eBooks through The eBook Store from Sony and our affiliated ecosystem, and now round out our Reader offering with a wireless device that lets consumer purchase and download content on the go.&#8221;<br />
A Family of Three Readers<br />
The Reader Pocket Edition sports a five-inch electronic paper display packaged in a stylish chassis and is available in a variety of colors, including navy blue, rose and silver. It is available for the ground-breaking price of $199, making it the most affordable dedicated reading device on the market.<br />
The Reader Touch Edition features a responsive, menu-driven six-inch touch screen panel that enables quick, intuitive navigation, page turning, highlighting and note taking with the swipe of a finger or by using the included stylus pen. It comes in red, black or silver and retails for about $299.<br />
The Reader Daily Edition gives consumers wireless access via AT&amp;T’s 3G mobile broadband network to Sony’s eBook store from just about anywhere in the U.S. Book lovers will be able to browse, purchase and download books as well as select newspapers and magazines when and where they want. There are no monthly fees or transaction charges for the basic wireless connectivity and users still have the option to side load personal documents or content from other compatible sites via USB.<br />
The seven-inch wide, touch screen display provides for intuitive navigation and comfortable layout of content, including newspapers and magazines, whether you’re reading in portrait or landscape orientation. In portrait mode, about 30-35 lines of text are visible, making the experience very similar to that of a printed paperback book. A high contrast ratio with 16 levels of grayscale ensures that text and images are crisp and easy to read. The Daily Edition also boasts an attractive aluminum body with an integrated cover for durability. It has enough internal memory to hold more than one thousand standard eBooks and expansion slots for memory cards to hold even more. It will sell for about $399.<br />
All three models feature Sony’s award-winning industrial design and an E Ink® Vizplex™ electronic paper display that emulates the look of ink on paper. Sony’s eBook Library software 3.0, which now includes support for many Apple® Macintosh® computers as well as PCs, makes it easy to transfer and read any Adobe® PDF (with reflow capability), EPUB, Microsoft® Word®, BBeB® files, or other text file formats on the Reader.<br />
Access to Even More Content at the eBook Store by Sony<br />
In addition to announcing a new family of Readers, Sony has also made several changes and improvements to its eBook Store to provide better access to an even greater variety of ebooks. Earlier this summer Sony announced the availability of more than one million free public domain books from Google, and the company made new releases and New York Times bestseller titles available for $9.99.<br />
Today also marks the launch of Sony’s Library Finder application. Sony, working with OverDrive (www.overdrive.com), the leading global digital distributor of eBooks and to libraries, will now offer visitors to the eBook Store by Sony easy access to their local library’s collection of eBooks. Thousands of libraries in the OverDrive network offer eBooks optimized for the Sony Reader, and visitors can now find these libraries by typing their zip code into the Library Finder. Through the selected library’s download website, visitors can check out eBooks with a valid library card, download them to a PC and transfer to their Reader. At the end of the library’s lending period, eBooks simply expire, so there are never any late fees.<br />
The Reader Pocket and Touch Editions, as well as available accessories such as AC adaptors, cases and covers with reading lights, are available now at SonyStyle.com and SonyStyle stores. Book lovers interested in trying out a Reader in person will also be able to find them for sale at Best Buy, BJs, Borders, Sam’s Club, Staples, Target, Toys“R”Us, Wal-Mart and other authorized retailers nationwide.</p>
<p>DIGITAL READING ECOSYSTEM EXPANDS FOR SONY’S READER</p>
<p>NEW YORK, August 25, 2009  Further evidence of the broad support for its open approach to digital reading, Sony today announced relationships with a variety of traditional and digital publishers who provide content in industry standard formats to create a universe of reading material compatible with the Reader.<br />
All of these sites will offer content in the EPUB format, the International Digital Publishing Forum’s (IDPF) XML-based standard format for reflowable digital books and publications. EPUB has gained acceptance among major trade book publishers with dozens of publishers already producing the majority of their eBooks using the standard. Sony recently announced that the company is transitioning its entire content library to the EPUB format, giving consumers the freedom to purchase or download free eBooks from the eBook Store by Sony and read them on any EPUB-compatible device.<br />
“From the beginning, we have said that an open format means more choice for consumers,&#8221; said Steve Haber, president of Sony’s Digital Reading Business Division. &#8220;Now, working with other industry leaders, we can provide a device that is compatible with the widest selection of content available. Readers can shop around for what interests them rather than be locked into one store.&#8221;<br />

•	Independent Bookstores&#8211;More than 200 participating members of the American Booksellers Association&#8211;including stores such as Tattered Cover (Denver, CO) and Vroman’s Bookstore (Pasadena, CA)&#8211;will have the ability to sell e-content to consumers beginning this fall. The stores using ABA’s IndieCommerce platform will offer content in the EPUB format and protected by Adobe’s Content Server 4 (ACS4) digital rights management, which is compatible with Sony e-Reader products. In addition, plans are underway to make Sony’s e-Reader devices available for purchase from independent bookstores in time for this holiday season. ABA is a not-for-profit trade organization devoted to meeting the needs of its core members&#8211;independently owned bookstores with storefront locations&#8211;through education, information dissemination, business products and services, and advocacy.<br />
·        BooksOnBoard&#8211;BooksOnBoard, the largest independent eBook bookseller and member of both the ABA and IDPF, has been a staunch supporter of the EPUB standard through its founder Bob Livolsi. BooksOnBoard was the first eBook site to offer the EPUB standard to its burgeoning customer base and has sold more EPUB formatted books than any other online bookstore. BooksOnBoard believes that the EPUB standard significantly benefits the publisher, authors and most importantly the consumer.<br />
·        NetGalley&#8211;NetGalley is an innovative and easy-to-use online service and connection point for book publishers, reviewers, media, librarians, booksellers, bloggers and educators. NetGalley delivers digital galleys and promotional materials to professional readers and helps promote new and upcoming titles. Starting today, NetGalley will support the Reader with the ability to download a protected PDF file and this fall the company will offer digital galleys in EPUB format.<br />
•	Powell&#8217;s Books and Powells.com&#8211;Powell&#8217;s Books is the largest independent bookseller in the world.  Innovative since its inception in 1971, it was one of the first booksellers online (beginning in 1994), and one of the first to sell eBooks for reading devices (the Rocket eBook) in 1999. Powell&#8217;s offers EPUB content for a wide range of compatible devices, including the Sony line.  Powell’s is an important player in the open access world of eBooks, where titles are provided by a wide range of publishers in a competitive retail environment, read on a range of devices, and downloaded and owned by millions of people around the world.</p></blockquote>

<p>In this era of corporate malfeasance, office supply retailer Staples, the official shredder supplier for the CES room, is touting the its latest line of high-tech shredders at the CES trade show.</p>
<p>We at the Digits blog didn’t know shredders could come with so much built-in technology. Staples is showcasing some shredders with V-Track, a blade technology that centers the paper as it shreds, which prevents paper jams.</p>

<p>Amazon&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081226/amazon-our-holiday-sales-were-great-just-dont-ask-us-to-tell-you-about-them/">data-free claim</a> that it posted its &#8220;best ever&#8221; holiday season this month has gotten a deservedly skeptical reception. But here&#8217;s one vote in favor of Jeff Bezos&#8217;s e-commerce giant: A customer satisfaction poll that singles out just Amazon and Netflix for praise.</p>
<p>Forsee Results says that Amazon (AMZN) and Netflix (NFLX) were the clear winners in its annual survey of Web shoppers. And Amazon was the only company in Forsee&#8217;s Top 5 that got higher rankings this year than it did in 2007.</p>
<p>Even mighty Apple (AAPL), whose customers were generally fairly happy with their online shopping experience, saw its ranking drop one point over the last year. Here&#8217;s a list of results (click to enlarge):</p>

And not that surprising that Circuit City (CC), which is in the midst of a Chapter 11 filing, fared poorly. <p>And better still, they can walk out of one of those partner stores with more than a receipt. You see, Dell&#8217;s kiosks (shown above just <em>buzzing</em> with activity) carried no inventory. An odd choice, since consumers typically like to take their purchases home after they&#8217;ve made them. Just ask Apple, which has carved out a nice little brick-and-mortar retail business for itself <em>by stocking the products it sells</em>.</p>
<p>As George Whalin, president of Retail Management Consultants, noted back in 2006 when Dell first debuted its kiosks, stores that carry <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20060601234805/http://www.statesman.com/business/content/business/stories/other/05/21dell.html">no inventory risk frustrating shoppers</a>. Said Whalin: &#8220;I don’t think that works as well, particularly for consumers. Walk into a major consumer electronics store, and they have a selection of TVs you can choose from, compare, load up in the back of your pickup and take home.”</p>
