<p>If you want a quick analysis of why Facebook would <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120409/breaking-facebook-to-acquire-instagram-for-1-billion/">pay $1 billion for popular photo-sharing service Instagram</a>, please ignore the obvious financials that just don&#8217;t add up at all and have most of the typically unshockable digerati shocked by the sheer amount of the price.</p>
<p>Actually, it&#8217;s pretty simple: Photos. Photos. And, oh yes, <em>mobile</em> photos &#8212; lots and lots and lots of them.</p>
<p>Astonishingly, Facebook users already upload an average of more than 250 million images daily, making it the most popular photo-sharing service on the Web. </p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not the best by far and not the most mobile, which is Facebook&#8217;s biggest weakness &#8212; that has been accomplished many others, especially Instagram, the favorite of power users who scoffed at Facebook&#8217;s weak tools. (The <em>horror</em> of no filters!)</p>
<p>Now &#8212; instead of all those billions of juicy digital photos snapped by an ever-growing legion of smartphone users loading up to the beautifully designed Instagram mobile app and living on the servers of the small San Francisco-based start-up &#8212; Facebook has now captured all these memories for its massive social networking site.</p>
<p>And while $1 billion seems an awful lot to pay for that privilege &#8212; Twitter is quaking with &#8220;OMG!&#8221; and &#8220;Wow!&#8221; and &#8220;WTF!&#8221; tweets about the acquisition &#8212; this is apparently priceless for Facebook in a deal that went down quickly and quietly in recent weeks.</p>
<p>That and the fact that the huge sum prevented Instagram from being scooped up by Google.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a clear signal from CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg &#8212; who rules all product efforts at the company &#8212; of his intent to dominate all innovations that have to do with owning the social experience. </p>
<p>Because while many Instagram photos quickly made their way onto Facebook &#8212; sharing on the service, as well as on Twitter, was a big part of the app&#8217;s offering &#8212; the future of the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company is tied to having control over key elements of the user experience. </p>
<p>Of all of those &#8212; communications, status updates, content linking &#8212; it has been photos that have become perhaps the most important part of Facebook, almost since its beginnings. </p>
<p>Photos are what allowed Facebook to grow so quickly and what made it more than just a blue sea of text and links to consumers. Its new Timeline depends on big, pretty photos, and Facebook even recently announced that it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120322/introducing-your-super-large-high-resolution-face-on-facebook/">would allow full-screen viewing</a> of high-resolution photos on its Web site, a pricey endeavor.</p>
<p>So, perhaps it was inevitable that Zuckerberg would pay up for Instagram, too &#8212; he knows a good entrepreneurial success when he sees one and apparently has the power to convince start-ups that he can make their bigger dreams come true.</p>
<p>Whether or not Instagram ever makes money is perhaps beside the point at this moment in time, as Facebook is poised to go public at 100 times the amount it forked over for Instagram. </p>
<p>But that it considers such a purchase worth as much as one percent of its expected valuation says a thousands words. And most of those words are &#8220;mobile&#8221; and &#8220;photo.&#8221;</p>
<p>As <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/benhjacobs/status/189400138521915392">Ben Jacobs noted on Twitter</a>: &#8220;Kodak goes bankrupt and Instagram is worth a billion dollars. 2012, y&#8217;all.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. And, I have no doubt if Zuckerberg could figure out a way to shove all those Kodak moments from analog snapshots onto Facebook easily, he&#8217;d have paid up for that, too.</p>

<p>I have always admired Yahoo&#8217;s Chief Trust Officer <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/annetoth">Anne Toth</a>, given she has done a great job articulating privacy issues at the Silicon Valley Internet giant. It is one of the areas where Yahoo truly shines.</p>
<p>But I really like the way she quit Yahoo after more than a dozen years there, with a very adorkable and classy <a href="http://www.facebook.com/anne.toth?sk=wall">status update on Facebook</a>. It&#8217;s done with respect for the company and a lot of humor.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t need to say more, except read it:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>It&#8217;s official &#8212; I&#8217;ve broken up with my partner of 13 years. Yahoo!, I want you to know that it&#8217;s not you. It&#8217;s *me*. Really. You&#8217;ll always be my first&#8230;Internet company. You changed my life and I will remember you forever. 				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Usually, I don&#8217;t fall for this kind of stuff, but the posting on Google+ by one of the key execs involved in its recent launch, Bradley Horowitz, is too adorkable to resist. </p>
<p>In a <a href="https://plus.google.com/113116318008017777871/posts">post tonight</a>, he announced his engagement to fellow Google exec Irene Au, complete with a photo of the ring in a pretty dish. Horowitz asked her last week in Paris.</p>
<p>Both also worked at Yahoo.</p>
<p>In the status update &#8212; which begins &#8220;She said yes!&#8221; &#8212; Horowitz noted, &#8220;Having gotten through the trivial details of launching Google+ (!), I recently turned my attention to more important matters&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>And, in an email to me about it, Horowitz wrote (judiciously for both Google and Au): &#8220;And just to be clear&#8230;I got her *permission* to make it public. (So I&#8217;m off to a good start, eh?)&#8221;</p>
<p>Like I said, adorkable. </p>

<p>Flipboard, the high-profile and highly designed social media reading app for the Apple iPad, is out raising another round of funding at an eye-popping $200 million valuation, according to numerous sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The Palo Alto, CA, company declined to comment on its new funding efforts, which sources said had recently accelerated.</p>
<p>While that valuation might change, several sources considering the investment said it is unlikely to go down in the current frothy financing market in Silicon Valley, especially given Flipboard&#8217;s splashy profile and top-drawer pedigree.</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur Mike McCue and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million"> launched to much attention in July</a>.</p>
<p>That included $10.5 million in venture funding from Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angel investors, such as Twitter Co-founder Jack Dorsey, Facebook Co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, the ubiquitous Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>At the time, it was unclear what Flipboard&#8217;s valuation was. But now, said several sources, it&#8217;s clocking in at a hefty $200 million, which is perhaps no surprise at a time of increasingly lofty investments in tech start-ups.</p>
<p>Suddenly, Foursquare&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100629/location-location-location-foursquare-nabs-20-million-in-vc-funding-at-95-million-pre-money-valuation-plus-blog-posts-of-course/">$95 million valuation</a> seems like a <em>bargain</em>! (Sorry, Dennis Crowley, for <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100701/loco-about-location-or-just-plain-crazy">comparing you to the Kool-Aid pitcher</a> dude.)</p>
<p>In any case, the elegant Flipboard&#8211;which McCue recently told me in an onstage interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin had zero revenues thus far&#8211;has changed the game on the consumption of social media.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In this offering, there are pull quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of linked-out content. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on Twitter or Facebook.</p>
<p>Flipboard has since added a number of features and will be launching its new iPhone app later this year.</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see who will jump into this leader in a nascent market, besides its current investors. Sources said one likely target group for Flipboard could be a large traditional media company.</p>

<p>In an interesting social enterprise move, popular social networking collaboration tool Seesmic is taking a $4 million investment from Salesforce.com, as well as from Softbank.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based Seesmic has one of the top desktop and also mobile applications for monitoring a consumer&#8217;s various feeds from Twitter, Facebook and more.</p>
<p>So far, Seesmic has received $16 million in total funding. Other investors include Atomico, Omidyar Network and Wellington Partners.</p>
<p>Moving beyond a consumer app, where it has one million registered users, Seesmic has also worked closely with Salesforce.com on integrating its Chatter social enterprise network offering.</p>
<p>Deeper integration with Chatter and bridging more social communications with its customers is coming, said Seemsic founder and CEO Lo&iuml;c Le Meur.</p>
<p>&#8220;It becomes an amazing internal dashboard if you are a manager,&#8221; said Le Meur in an interview with BoomTown this morning. &#8220;It has everything we have built for consumers, but internally.&#8221;</p>
<p>There are many such apps and software-based services being developed to inject social into the enterprise, including Yammer, Socialcast and Jive.</p>
<p>It will also be interesting to see if the investment is a prelude to an acquisition by Salesforce.com, to further bolster its own efforts in socializing the workplace.</p>

<p>Seesmic and Salesforce.com have worked closely for more than six months to create a seamless integration between Seesmic Desktop and Salesforce Chatter, the industry&#8217;s first enterprise social collaboration app and platform. Leveraging the social features popularized by Facebook and Twitter&#8211;such as profiles, status updates and real-time feeds&#8211;Chatter lets employees &#8220;follow&#8221; documents, people, business processes and application data. The result is a new level of productivity that crosses departments and organizational barriers. By integrating with Chatter, Seesmic Desktop will enable salesforce.com users to immediately see comments that customers have posted on Facebook and Twitter.</p>

<p>The software giant is updating its search service, announcing deep integration&#8211;part of a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing/">deal announced last year</a>&#8211;with Facebook.</p>
<p>The theme, according to Microsoft (MSFT) SVP Yusuf Mehdi, quoting the Beatles, was search with &#8220;a little help from your friends.&#8221;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s hope it&#8217;s not: &#8220;Help, I need somebody.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:35 am PT:</strong> Mehdi kicks off the show, announcing the line-up, which includes Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>Well, it just got 100 percent more interesting here in this nondescript auditorium.</p>
<p>Mehdi talks a little bit about the future of search and making it better. He talks about social being an important part of it.</p>

<p>While I&#8217;d have gone with Barry Manilow, he quotes the Beatles.</p>
<p>Mehdi is followed by Microsoft Online Services Division President Qi Lu, who throws more love bombs at Facebook.</p>
<p>&#8220;With the partnershop of Facebook and Bing, we will be able to unlock&#8230;how people in a social relationship can be first-class citizens in a search experience,&#8221; said Lu.</p>
<p>It sounds so lofty, even though it is mostly trading movie review recommendations or good places to take the kids on a rainy Sunday.</p>
<p>Lu thanks Zuckerberg effusively and invites him onstage.</p>
<p><strong>11:54 am:</strong> No hoodie.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg is also &#8220;honored to be here,&#8221; giving us a little history lesson about the origins of the social networking giant and its various and sundry efforts.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll be honest, the lack of donuts is making me distracted.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s not actually saying more than bromides about &#8220;what would social search look like.&#8221;</p>
<p>And looking around at who would be the right partner in the arena. Microsoft! Of course! That giant investment way back when was nice too!</p>
<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re really the underdog here,&#8221; said Zuckerberg in the first interesting comment, noting that overdogs&#8211;that would be Google (GOOG), which he does not mention by name&#8211;never innovate much.</p>
<p>His take: Underdogs are the <em>best</em>.</p>

<p>Zzzzzzzz. Get to the good stuff!</p>
<p>First, a module that brings in a Like module from Facebook into the search, with all the other information provided by Bing.</p>
<p>It is, said, Mehdi, particular for a person.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is going to profoundly change how we search,&#8221; he said of personalized experiences.</p>
<p>Mehdi also shows off a way to differentiate your friends who have names of famous people, who are the ones who come up on search first.</p>
<p>Interesting, but people search is not the biggest problem I have.</p>
<p>He also says more is coming, such as friend experts surfacing in search and Like in every result on a page that it was possible. Yipes!</p>
<p>Also, thank the Lord, the ability to turn it off.</p>
<p><strong>12:15 pm:</strong> Now Facebook exec Dan Rose comes up and starts talking about the Facebook-Microsoft bromance.</p>
<p>Apparently, four years is an eternity in Silicon Valley in terms of a relationship.</p>
<p>Actually, four weeks is long, so congrats you two crazy kids!</p>
<p>I&#8217;d celebrate with a donut if they were <em>here</em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;More and more&#8221; social in Bing, said Rose.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a match made in digital heaven!</p>

<p><strong>12:22 pm:</strong> Q&#038;A time!</p>

<p>Zuckerberg takes the lead. New interfaces! More!</p>
<p>A privacy question. &#8220;This is Instant Personalization,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, who said that Facebook has five partners in that effort.</p>
<p>He explains Instant Personalization, saying he wants to clear up misconceptions.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s private enough, you oversharers!</p>
<p>&#8220;Just because it is all public information about you, this is really good,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>But is it by default? Of course, it is. That&#8217;s Facebook modus operandi!</p>
<p>Opt-out should be tattooed on employees at Facebook as a requirement.</p>
<p>Bing does put up a warning at the top of the page, but only five times. Then, you need to go foraging to turn it off.</p>
<p>Next: Does Bing search queries get sent back to Facebook? Not necessarily.</p>
<p>But, &#8220;everything is going to be social eventually,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, as long as it is public.</p>
<p>Public is apparently the new black.</p>
<p>More questions about new Facebook Groups and other deets, none of which is that bracing.</p>
<p>Apropos of nothing, I am considering asking a question about the ever-exciting <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101012/hp-scandal-sucks-in-new-york-times-columnist/">Hewlett-Packard</a> (HPQ) scandal, just to jack up the volume.</p>
<p>I try to ask a question about Zuckerberg&#8217;s underdog comment, but no more time.</p>
<p>But Zuckerberg sort of addresses it, going on about why he has picked Microsoft as the favorite.</p>
<p>While he does not say it, it&#8217;s because Facebook is the overdog here and, as you know, every overdog needs an underdog.</p>

<p>Facebook and Microsoft are discussing an agreement that would significantly expand the search relationship the pair have shared for many years, said several people with knowledge of the situation.</p>
<p>According to those sources, that includes the possibility for the software giant&#8217;s Bing search service to mine anonimized data from consumer usage of the social networking site&#8217;s recently introduced Like buttons.</p>
<p>The Like button, which Facebook has been trying to proliferate around the Web, allows users to indicate an interest in a page with one click that then tells their Facebook friends.</p>
<p>While the deal is not closed and talks could end without result, such information might yield a treasure trove of insight for both search users and advertisers.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because it represents search based on what people are actually interested in rather than just crunching massive amounts of information and muscling it into something useful.</p>
<p>And it would also presumably give Bing a little leg up on Google (GOOG), since data will be available on it that is not available on the search giant, made more important as Facebook&#8217;s information-generating audience grows ever larger.</p>
<p>But because of Facebook&#8217;s many privacy snafus, sources said that any expansion of the search relationship will never involve providing any information except that which users have agreed to make public.</p>
<p>Facebook and Microsoft (MSFT) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing/">already struck a nonexclusive agreement almost a year ago</a> to integrate Facebook&#8217;s real-time feeds of public status updates into Bing.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s part of a longtime search&#8211;as well as investment&#8211;relationship between Microsoft and Facebook that stretches back for years.</p>
<p>Currently, Bing provides global Web search to Facebook, yielding branded results whenever someone searches within the service.</p>
<p>Microsoft also invested $240 million in Facebook in late  2007 and has since had a mostly cooperative relationship with the fast-growing Silicon Valley company.</p>
<p>It also has provided a hedge against Google for Facebook, as that pair&#8217;s relations has worsened over the years due to intensified competition.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In yet another major departure from Yahoo in recent days, Yahoo VP for Social Platforms Neal Sample has left the company for eBay (EBAY), where he will be the chief of the e-commerce giant&#8217;s architecture.</p>
<p>After being contacted by me after I&#8217;d heard about his departure from several Yahoo (YHOO) staffers, Sample confirmed the move but did not provide other details. His email to staff is below.</p>
<p>A Yahoo spokesperson also confirmed Sample&#8217;s leaving.</p>
<p>It was less than a week ago that Yahoo Communications Products Head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/exclusive-yahoos-communications-head-jason-titus-departs/">Jason Titus also left the company</a>.</p>
<p>Sample&#8217;s move is another blow to Yahoo&#8217;s management team, led by CEO Carol Bartz, given his job as the leader of the Internet giant&#8217;s open, social and publishing platforms.</p>
<p>That purview stretched from comments to Answers to status updates and, of course, to Yahoo&#8217;s recent move to integrate social networks such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/yahoos-project-rushmore-begins-with-massive-facebook-connect-deployment-across-internet-giant">Facebook</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100223/yahoo-expands-twitter-relationship-in-next-stage-of-project-rushmore-complete-with-cutesey-bird-puns">Twitter</a> deeply into the service.</p>
<p>Sample and his colleagues were behind the Silicon Valley Internet giant&#8217;s late-to-the-social-party strategy of employing an all-inclusive hug of every social networking service globally and providing users with a kind of social dashboard that is understandable amid all the noise.</p>

<p>It is with mixed emotions that I tell you that I am moving on to become VP of Architecture at eBay. I&#8217;ll be taking on a larger role and taking on new challenges and opportunities. I&#8217;ll be leaving early next month and am working hard to ensure a smooth transition.  Jay and team are already searching for a new permanent leader.</p>
<p>Needless to say, my time at Yahoo! has been full of adventure, technical achievements and a lot fun with great, smart people. My decision to leave was not an easy one. We&#8217;ve made significant progress over the last six years, particularly related to the advancements of our Social and Open platforms and I know many good things will continue to come out of this team.</p>
<p>As many of you know, I went to college in Wyoming where I learned one thing that&#8217;s been more important than anything else: how to shake hands. There&#8217;s a lot of handshaking that goes on there, so you get good at it! I’ve explained to a few folks that you even wave to other people in cars in Wyoming (perhaps because there&#8217;s a good chance one of you will pull the other out of a snow bank one day!).</p>
<p>In the 90s, I started a PhD at Stanford and experienced an immediate cultural disconnect.  Seemingly no one in California shook hands or even said &#8220;hello&#8221; as they passed on the sidewalk. It was strange.</p>
<p>A little over six years ago, I was looking for a new work home. I knew that I needed a workplace loaded with good people and Yahoo! fit that bill. On my first interview, I was recruited by a friend from elementary school (Mark!), bumped into someone I&#8217;d bought a foosball table from a couple years before (Vikram!), and met a future boss, a long-time Yahoo! with outstanding character and a great handshake (JV!). It was a great fit: good folks, good work, and plenty of new hands to shake.</p>
<p>I leave present and future Yahoos with this: shake more hands! Get out there and press the flesh. Learn the names of your fellow Yahoos, all of them. Invite them to coffee and introduce them to your favorite baristas. It helps to know who is on the other end of that email, who to go to in getting things done, and who&#8217;s available for a session of mid-afternoon stress-relief (aka, foosball).</p>

<p>There&#8217;s been a bit of bloggery agonizing of late about the possibility that no one is listening to the endless stream of sharing via status updates and other social networking tools.</p>
<p>As in, if a check-in falls in the forest, does it make a sound?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a good question to answer, given all the effort being put into the social medium.</p>
<p>And here is a bracing diatribe on the subject by Loren Feldman of 1938 Media, which is well worth a listen:</p>

<p>Because the service is a bit of a conceptual leap in digesting social networking, this video might help explain the excitement among tech bloggers and others about its debut.</p>
<p>Flipboard has dubbed itself a &#8220;social magazine,&#8221; attempting to make the social networking universe and the real-time Web more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via a rich app on the popular Apple (AAPL) device.</p>

<p>The innovative Flipboard emerged from stealth mode last night. It was co-founded by longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur Mike McCue and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January and has grabbed a large $10.5 million funding from top tech power players.</p>

<p>The funders include Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, Index Ventures and a spate of high-profile investors, such as Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moscovitz, angel investor Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. (NWS) exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>Flipboard currently has about 20 employees at its downtown Palo Alto, Calif., HQ.</p>

<p>McCue <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090513/exclusive-tellme-founder-and-gm-mccue-departs-as-microsoft-reorganizes-its-speech-recognition-unit/">left Tellme a year ago</a> and was casting about for a new start-up when he settled on creating a new way to digest and present the noisy flood of information being spewed 24/7 by social networks.</p>
<p>Kleiner Perkins partner John Doerr, who backed Tellme, said he was immediately intrigued by the idea.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is at once intimate and alive and beautiful,&#8221; he said in an interview with me earlier today. &#8220;This is the next wave of social media and redefines what magazine is&#8230;and I think it will be one of the defining apps on the iPad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>Ellen Pao, also of Kleiner and a member of Flipboard&#8217;s board, said she hoped publishers, whose Web sites are reconfigured from tweets and other social links by the app, will welcome the new distribution format.</p>
<p>&#8220;Traditional publishing is facing a crossroads and this imagines it from the ground up,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I hope it paves the way.&#8221;</p>

<p>We&#8217;ll see about old media reactions, which has been decidedly mixed to aggregation apps like this.</p>
<p>The New York Times (NYT), for example, attacked rather than embraced another <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/popular-pulse-news-reader-ipad-app-gets-steve-jobs-praise-in-morning-then-booted-from-app-store-hours-later-after-new-york-times-complaint">terrific news reading iPad app called Pulse</a>, accusing it of misusing its content.</p>
<p>It was a stupid move against inexorable concepts such as Pulse and Flipboard, which are beginning to make sense of the changing digital information landscape.</p>

<p>Facebook confirmed that it expects to announce its 500-millionth user next week, and will mark the occasion with a new consumer marketing initiative called &#8220;Facebook Stories.&#8221;</p>
<p>Last week, BoomTown got wind of the effort&#8211;which will center on a variety of life stories from users about the impact of the social networking site on their lives&#8211;and asked Facebook about it.</p>
<p>The company said it was readying its launch for next week and put Randi Zuckerberg on the horn to tell me the story behind &#8220;Stories.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;As we anticipated our 500-million milestone, and we wanted to find a different way to announce and celebrate it,&#8221; said Zuckerberg, who has spearheaded the site&#8217;s creation, in an interview this afternoon. &#8220;In the past, it&#8217;s been all about the numbers and milestones, and we realized we had never taken the opportunity to celebrate users.&#8221;</p>
<p>Getting to the 500-million mark, though, is a big deal for the Silicon Valley-based Facebook, which has been growing wildly over the last several years across the globe.</p>
<p>While the number has been widely expected to be announced soon, it will still be a big landmark in the history of the company.</p>
<p>Thus, a Web site within Facebook that is a visualization of some of the many kinds of consumer stories the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=user_stories">company has collected over the years</a>, but never showed off.</p>
<p>The stories will have two views&#8211;organized by by geographical location and by theme, such as &#8220;finding love,&#8221; &#8220;coping with grief&#8221; and &#8220;natural disasters.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook has seeded the selection with about 200 text stories it has, asking users again for permission to feature them.</p>
<p>But the point is to open the page up to all users to submit their tale in 420 characters, the same number as a status update on Facebook. The story can also be linked to the user&#8217;s profile.</p>
<p>Users can also &#8220;Like&#8221; stories, and the most popular will be featured. The site will also be optimized for the other devices, such as the Apple (AAPL) iPad and Amazon (AMZN) Kindle.</p>
<p>The site was designed by two outside firms, social marketing company Involver and JESS3, a design, branding and data visualization firm.</p>
<p>Zuckerberg, who said she would be adding her own story, said her favorite so far has been the story of a group that coalesced on Facebook to save an old theater in Kentucky.</p>
<p>But she is hoping for a varied collection that will appeal to, well, the soon-to-be 500 million people on Facebook.</p>
<p>&#8220;We really think by surfacing these stories, users can explain what Facebook is a lot better than we can,&#8221; said Zuckerberg.</p>

Because here comes Facebook.</p>
<p>The social network is finally ready to start rolling out its location service this month and has linked up with McDonalds (MCD) for the launch, <a href="http://adage.com/digital/article?article_id=143742">Advertising Age reports</a>.</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>As early as this month, the social-networking site will give users the  ability to post their location within a status update. McDonald&#8217;s, through digital agency Tribal DDB, Chicago, is building an app with Facebook would allow users to check in at one of its restaurants and have a featured product appear in the post, such as an Angus Quarter Pounder, say executives close to the deal.</p></blockquote>
<p>It&#8217;s easy enough to make fun of this one, because really, who wants to admit to eating an Angus? (Had one in September 2007. Awful.) But then comes everyone else:</p>

Executives with knowledge say it was negotiated as part of a bigger media buy on Facebook, and McDonald&#8217;s will be the first marketer to take advantage of the service.</p>
<p>The fast feeder won&#8217;t be alone for long. While McDonald&#8217;s is expected to  be involved in the rollout in the next few weeks, execs at other  digital shops have begun to spec out location-based campaigns in  anticipation of Facebook&#8217;s impending functionality, which will allow  users to include their location in a status update.
</p></blockquote>
<p>Internet scribes get accused, with justification, of slapping the &#8220;-killer&#8221; suffix on anything and everything. But this one really is a threat to Foursquare.</p>
<p>Not only can Facebook replicate every feature on the much-hyped service, but it has something Foursquare won&#8217;t be able to boast of for a very long time: A sales team to match the location service up with big brands and a self-service ad platform that local businesses can plug into.</p>
<p>Add all of this to a user base of 450 million (!) people and it really is a problem for Foursquare, if Facebook wants it to be.</p>
<p>And that&#8217;s pretty much the defense I&#8217;ve heard when I bring up Facebook&#8217;s competitive threat to Foursquare boosters: &#8220;People always worry about giant Web company X stomping on zippy startup Y, but that almost never happens. Because giant Web companies are lumbering beasts that can&#8217;t move fast enough to take on zippy start-ups, and they don&#8217;t really care to, anyway.&#8221;</p>
<p>And maybe that will turn out to be true, here, too. If not, it may make all the talk of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100419/exclusive-andreessen-horowitz-drops-out-of-funding-race-for-foursquare/">$100 million offers</a> seem awfully hopeful.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here&#8217;s an interesting interview BoomTown did last week with Seesmic Founder and CEO Loic Le Meur, whose status update client software is one of the more popular ones, at the Facebook f8 developers conference last week.</p>
<p>In it, he talked about the various new features of Facebook that make it &#8220;very, very close to Twitter.&#8221; Such as the new &#8220;Like&#8221; button being like a retweet on Twitter.</p>
<p>(Actually, the French-born Le Meur calls the microblogging service &#8220;<em>Tweeee</em>-ter.&#8221;)</p>
<p>In any case, he made some interesting points, especially since Seesmic&#8211;among others&#8211;was caught up in the controversies around the entry of Twitter into businesses so far pioneered by innovative third-party satellites of Twitter.</p>
<p>Still, Le Meur sought to downplay the conflict&#8211;even after Twitter bought the competing Tweetie desktop client&#8211;with a blogpost titled: <a href="http://www.loiclemeur.com/english/2010/04/fck-you-naysayers-twitter-did-not-fck-us-and-just-rocks.html">&#8220;F*CK you naysayers. Twitter did NOT f*ck us and just rocks.&#8221;</a></p>
<p><em>Alrighty then!</em></p>
<p>And while it is true that Seesmic is more than just a Twitter client&#8211;with Facebook, LinkedIn and more in its dashboard for the desktop and mobile devices&#8211;Le Meur has to hope that competition between the microblogging service and the social networking giant is a good thing for smaller start-ups in their ecosystem, such as Seesmic.</p>

<p>Well, there will be no shortage of attention for the social networking phenom today as it kicks off its <a href="http://www.facebook.com/f8">third f8 developer conference</a> in San Francisco. As in years past, Zuckerberg&#8217;s keynote address will include an update on Facebook’s present and future and a slate of noteworthy announcements. Among those expected: A <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/19/technology/19facebook.html?">&#8220;presence bar,&#8221;</a> a toolbar that permits members to use their Facebook identities to log into third- party Web sites that agree to use it. </p>
<p>Also likely on tap: A universal &#8220;like&#8221; button. Along with the company’s already ubiquitous &#8220;share&#8221; button, it will allow members to draw more of the Web into Facebook’s so-called &#8220;social graph.&#8221; Stumble across a page you enjoy, click one of those buttons, and that page will be added to your Facebook stream and the social networking site’s search results. </p>
<p>Finally, Zuckerberg may announce a <a href="http://gigaom.com/2010/04/20/facebook-takes-over-the-web/">geolocation feature</a> that associates user actions with the locations where they occur. Similar to Foursquare’s location-based social networking service, this feature will enable Facebook members to note their location while writing their status updates. If it takes off, it will give Facebook a nice little foothold in the local advertising market.</p>

<p>In an unusual move for a venture firm chasing a hot start-up, Andreessen Horowitz said it has dropped out of the race to be an investor in social location company Foursquare.</p>
<p>In an interview tonight, Ben Horowitz, partner in the high-profile VC outfit he helms with Marc Andreessen, said enough was enough related to the intense media and other machinations, which have included talks to be acquired by Yahoo, around the deal.</p>
<p>&#8220;We withdrew our funding offer to Foursquare and we are out,&#8221; said Horowitz in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;This is playing out too much in public and clearly someone has an interesting agenda here, so this is not something we want to participate in.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition&#8211;after making an offer three weeks ago at valuations lower than have been reported, though he would not specify the exact number&#8211;Horowitz said he felt the company had conducted a &#8220;process that is very long and undefined.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, it is not clear what is going on, and the situation is rife with speculation about what Foursquare and, specifically, its founder and CEO, Dennis Crowley, will do.</p>
<p>Foursquare&#8217;s board met last week about the acquisition offer by Yahoo, which priced the start-up at just above $100 million.</p>
<p>The board turned that offer down flat, according to sources at both Foursquare and Yahoo.</p>
<p>But (YHOO) is still interested, sources said, and seems willing to raise its bid.</p>
<p>Also still in the running: Gideon Yu of Khosla Ventures, an Andreessen Horowitz rival, and perhaps several others.</p>
<p>In large part, the decision about what to do rests with Crowley, who controls a large chunk of the shares of the start-up.</p>
<p>Many think he might be inclined not to sell Foursquare to a large company, preferring to take venture funding instead, remaining independent and turbocharging the fast-growing status-update service.</p>
<p>Crowley already sold another start-up he founded, Dodgeball, to Google (GOOG) several years ago and had a very bad entrepreneurial experience.</p>
<p>Perhaps that&#8217;s why he and Foursquare have so far been very slow to take any of these lucrative offers, despite the fact that the service is still small (about one million users) and unprofitable.</p>
<p>But even in dropping out, Horowitz underscored his admiration for Foursquare, noting that Andreessen Horowitz considered it a great investment.</p>
<p>&#8220;If the process was changed, we still like the company,&#8221; said Horowitz. &#8220;But since it has been long and undefined, it is prone to manipulation.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an astounding thing for a VC to say on the record, of course, and entirely true.</p>

<p>Much to the chagrin of valuation-hyping Silicon Valley VCs, Yahoo is still in the running to acquire Foursquare, the hot social geolocation start-up, much longer than expected.</p>
<p>Foursquare&#8217;s board met last week about the possible acquisition deal. But, so far, it&#8217;s turned it down flat.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, (YHOO) is still interested, sources said.</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment, and I have an email into Foursquare, which has yet to respond.</p>
<p>But sources close to the situation said that Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley is holding his cards very close to the vest about <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100416/can-yahoo-nab-foursquare-for-125-million-or-will-vcs-prevail-the-race-for-the-hot-mobile-start-up-nears-its-end/">whether Foursquare will reconsider the offer</a>&#8211;which could reportedly go up to $125 million to $150 million in cash&#8211;from the Internet giant.</p>
<p>Crowley&#8217;s alternatives are two powerful venture firms&#8211;Andreessen Horowitz and Khosla Ventures&#8211;which had put lucrative funding deals on the table, trying to entice Foursquare to remain independent and turbocharge its fast-growing status-update service.</p>
<p>Other big firms have dropped out of the race, although sources said more are now sniffing around, including free-spending Russian moneybags, Digital Sky Technologies. It has already sunk copious funds into social networking giant Facebook, game powerhouse Zynga and, today, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100418/groupon-grabs-135-million-from-dst-and-battery-valuation-above-1-billion-for-social-buying-site/">social buying site Groupon</a>.</p>
<p>The VC selling point is freedom, the ability to sell for more later and perhaps a more modest payout for talent, including Crowley, by buying some of their common shares. Their valuation is hovering around $80 million.</p>

<p>Crowley (pictured here) controls a large chunk of the shares of the start-up and has so far turned down the $100 million offer from Yahoo, despite the fact that Foursquare is still small (about one million users) and unprofitable.</p>
<p>But it has grown dramatically and raised $1.35 million last August, valuing it at $6 million. Funds came from O&#8217;Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and Union Square Ventures, as well as a spate of well-known angel investors.</p>
<p>Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz hopes to best all VC offers after having recently made some significant noise about starting to engage in aggressive M&#038;A to attract talent and inject innovation into the company.</p>
<p>She has mentioned mobile start-ups specifically, and Foursquare is indeed among the hottest in the space, offering its growing base of users an ability to &#8220;check in&#8221; from a variety of places.</p>
<p>But the location-based services arena is heating up, with multiple competitors to Foursquare, such as Gowalla, as well as recent efforts by Facebook and Twitter to enter the space in a big way.</p>
<p>In fact, Wednesday at its F8 developers event, some expect Facebook to talk about its own version of Foursquare.</p>
<p>Still, Crowley may welcome the challenge after selling a similar location service called Dodgeball to Google (GOOG) in 2005 and ending up with very little. He left the search giant on bad terms two years later, and Dodgeball was closed down by Google in early 2009.</p>
<p>At the time, Crowley called the experience of being at a large company “incredibly frustrating.”</p>
<p>Which is why it will be interesting to see the choice he makes in what one person close to the situation called: &#8220;A very deft Hamlet act.&#8221;</p>
<p>Until he does, this is a perfect time for my Foursquare version of the indecisive Prince of Denmark&#8217;s most famous soliloquy&#8211;with apologies to Shakespeare&#8211;redone for a New York-based hipster Web 2.0 dude:</p>

<p>You have to give Yahoo an A for effort, if perhaps the ultimate grade in its ongoing quest to buy hot mobile social network Foursquare is an F.</p>
<p>While Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley&#8211;who controls a large chunk of the shares of the start-up&#8211;has so far turned down several $100 million-plus offers from Yahoo, sources said the company&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/yahoo-hires-new-ma-head-but-whither-greg-mrva/">newish head of mergers and acquisitions, Andrew Siegel</a>, is back in New York today still trying to convince him to sell.</p>
<p>So far, especially because the effort has dragged on for a while and Yahoo (YHOO) has not made an overwhelmingly massive show of financial might, Crowley appears to have develop a case of cold feet about marrying the Internet giant.</p>
<p>Sources said Foursquare has so far turned down Yahoo flat.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, two powerful venture firms&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100416/andreessen-horowitzs-ben-horowitz-talks-about-fat-start-ups-being-a-new-vc-and-whats-hot-and-not/">Andreessen Horowitz</a> and Khosla Ventures&#8211;are putting lucrative new funding deals on the table, trying to entice Foursquare to remain independent and turbocharge its fast-growing status-update service.</p>
<p>Other big firms have dropped out of the race, although sources said more are now sniffing around, including free-spending Russian moneybags, Digital Sky Technologies, which has already sunk copious funds into social networking giant Facebook and games powerhouse Zynga.</p>
<p>Their selling point is freedom, the ability to sell for more later and perhaps a more modest payout for talent, including Crowley, by buying some of their common shares. Their valuation is hovering around $100 million.</p>
<p>&#8220;Why sell now, when they are on a roll no one is going to catch them for a year at least,&#8221; said one person involved in talks with Foursquare. &#8220;There is a lot of benefit in waiting to cash in totally.&#8221;</p>
<p>Foursquare has grown dramatically, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090908/what-exactly-is-foursquare-and-why-are-investors-clamoring-for-it/">from 50,000 users less than a year ago</a> to closing in on one million soon.</p>
<p>Despite negligible revenue, Foursquare <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100318/foursquares-next-move-a-big-funding-round/">raised $1.35 million last August</a>, valuing it at $6 million.</p>
<p>Foursquare&#8217;s VCs include O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and Union Square Ventures, as well as a spate of well-known angel investors.</p>
<p>The choice for Crowley: Take the big pile of money from Yahoo&#8211;which is offering all cash, giving Crowley a huge windfall&#8211;and run, or double down with VCs.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo should just pay a huge premium and scare away the VCs to become relevant among the cool kids again,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;&#8221;In my mind, it&#8217;s a litmus test for Yahoo.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yahoo is well known in the tech space for hemming and hawing over acquisitions. Dithering over price and copyright issues, it famously lost a nearly completed purchase of YouTube to Google (GOOG), which swooped in with a bigger and cleaner offer almost overnight.</p>
<p>A similar scenario played out when Yahoo tried to buy Facebook when it was very small. Facebook not only remained independent but is considered to have surpassed the once mighty company in innovation and consumer appeal.</p>
<p>In addition, as many big companies have, Yahoo has bungled purchases of hot start-ups before, such as Flickr, the pioneering online photo service.</p>
<p>But CEO Carol Bartz has recently made some significant noise about Yahoo starting to engage in some aggressive M&#038;A to attract talent and inject innovation into the company.</p>
<p>Internally, sources said she has told staff that Yahoo has to start engaging externally and with force.</p>
<p>She has mentioned mobile start-ups specifically, and Foursquare is indeed among the hottest in the space, offering its growing base of users an ability to &#8220;check in&#8221; from a variety of places.</p>
<p>The location-based services arena is heating up, with multiple competitors to Foursquare, such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100405/gowallas-josh-williams-talks-about-phony-geo-location-wars-and-more/?mod=ATD_search">Gowalla</a>, as well as recent efforts by Facebook and Twitter to enter the space in a big way.</p>
<p>Still, Foursquare is the start-up of the moment among the digerati, striking deals with a wide range of partners, as well as tech giants like Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Thus, it has attracted a lot of look-sees, from AOL (AOL), Twitter and Google, although none have made a serious effort to buy Foursquare.</p>
<p>Even Facebook has contemplated the start-up, although it is more likely to try replicating its own version of Foursquare, which is could announce at its <a href="http://www.facebook.com/f8">F8 developers event</a> next week.</p>
<p>Twitter also indicated at its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100415/some-twits-chirp-from-twitter-conference-ev-biz-and-more/">own conference this past week</a> that it will continue to offer similar location features.</p>
<p>The challenge for Foursquare&#8217;s Crowley is in the timing, and deciding if he can look such a large gift horse in the mouth.</p>
<p>He sold a similar location service called Dodgeball to Google in 2005, but left the search giant on bad terms two years later. Dodgeball was closed down by Google in early 2009.</p>
<p>At the time, Crowley called the experience of being at a large company &#8220;incredibly frustrating,&#8221; while Google sources said Crowley was a bit of a frustration to them.</p>
<p>Translation: No tears were shed on either side by his leaving.</p>
<p>In any case, he rebounded with Foursquare and is now being pursued again in the throw-caution-to-the-wind manner some entrepreneurs enjoy.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s an insane offer, in a lot ways, but big enough that we all have to take it seriously,&#8221; said one person close to Foursquare.</p>
<p>Insane is what some think Yahoo has to be.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo needs to kneecap everyone near Foursquare,&#8221; said one with knowledge of the situation. &#8220;This is a strategic purchase, not one based on any metric of revenue or users, so it&#8217;s just as crazy at $100 million as at $150 million.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, a <em>little</em> crazier, but you get the point.</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment, and I have an email into Foursquare, which has yet to respond.</p>
<p>Silicon Alley Insider <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yahoo-considers-buying-foursquare-for-100-million-2010-4">first wrote</a> about Yahoo&#8217;s interest in Foursquare about two weeks ago.</p>

<p>Earlier this week at <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100415/some-twits-chirp-from-twitter-conference-ev-biz-and-more/">Twitter&#8217;s Chirp conference</a>, Venrock&#8217;s David Pakman seemed to strike a chord by coining a new buzzword that deserves to gain some level of acceptance.</p>
<p>On a panel BoomTown moderated, in answer to my question about what kinds of investments and trends he is looking for in the social networking space, Pakman said:</p>
<p>&#8220;The &#8216;right-time&#8217; Web is more valuable in some cases than the real-time Web. Real-time data is only interesting when I&#8217;m actually looking for that information. There&#8217;s no service today that&#8217;s giving information when it&#8217;s really needed. If your company is doing that&#8230;I brought my checkbook.&#8221;</p>
<p>While the checkbook was a nice touch, Pakman is actually making a good point, as much as I hate the proclivity of techies to coin new and often silly terms to wow the general public.</p>
<p>But one of the key issues being raised of late about making all these status update data streams helpful is that they are super-useless 98 percent of the time, resembling a raging flooded river more than a way to navigate to any place that is actually useful.</p>
<p>Someone <em>does</em> have to significantly drop the signal-to-noise ratio on all this blather, cutting through to find the really valuable information we all know has to be there.</p>

At an event at company headquarters today, Google announced  <a href="http://www.google.com/buzz">Google Buzz</a>, a new Twitteresque status update system for the email service that will allow users to share their everyday mundanities and inanities and follow those of selected contacts.</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/02/buzz1.png" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/02/buzz1-253x300.png" alt="" title="buzz1" width="253" height="300" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-34542" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2010/02/google-buzz-in-gmail.html">&#8220;A Google approach to sharing,&#8221;</a> Buzz is designed to, in the words of Bradley Horowitz, VP of Product Management, &#8220;find the signal in the social networking noise.&#8221; </p>
<p>The service exists within Gmail and promises to bring the social network that Google (GOOG) says always existed beneath the email service to the surface.</p>
<p>&#8220;The stream of social messages has become a torrent,&#8221; said Horowitz. &#8220;There is no way to parse that amount of information that ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime. We think this has become a Google-scale problem.&#8221;</p>
<p>Hence, Buzz.</p>
<p>Buzz taps into the torrent via the sort of feature set you’d expect: auto-following, which turns Gmail contact lists into social networks (which seems to me a horrifically bad idea; Like most folks, I imagine I have quite a few contacts I absolutely do <strong>NOT</strong> want to included in my social network); public and private sharing options; support of the &#8220;@ reply&#8221; feature popularized by Twitter; and a feature called &#8220;Recommended Buzz&#8221; that allows users to endorse updates they enjoy. The service also strives to make it easy to enhance those updates with content from other sites&#8211;Flickr, Picasa, YouTube and, yes, Twitter (no Facebook, though&#8211;yet). </p>
<p>Buzz, which launches Tuesday, is closely tied to Google&#8217;s mobile ambitions. It will debut in concert with a <a href="http://googlemobile.blogspot.com/2010/02/introducing-google-buzz-for-mobile-see.html">Web app for Android and iPhone and an enhancement to Google Maps for Mobile</a> that will use GPS data to associate public Buzz content posted from mobile phones with location.</p>
<p>Google is the latest search company to try to graft social-networking features onto email service. Yahoo did it last year by adding  &#8220;status casting,&#8221; its variation on Twitter, to Yahoo Mail.  That feature has been mostly ignored since its debut. Perhaps Google&#8217;s effort will fare a bit better. It is, perhaps, the one company with enough heft and market power to reasonably take on Facebook. But it won’t be easy: Facebook has some 400 million unique users. Gmail, about 176 million.</p>
<p>Still, embrace and extend. Embrace and extend.</p>

<p>AOL has taken another step closer to selling off its ICQ instant messaging service, culling seven bids to four &#8220;serious&#8221; ones, said sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The price for the service is hovering just under $200 million, several sources said, with one bid higher.</p>
<p>An AOL spokeswoman declined to comment.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091118/aol-hires-bankers-to-sell-off-icq-as-internet-service-starts-to-shed-non-core-assets/">reported news of the sale of ICQ</a> by AOL (AOL) in November, part of a deleveraging of units from the newly independent Internet company as it focuses more on its content and advertising business.</p>
<p>While other <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703442904574594390157672818.html">reports a month later said the sale was closer</a> to completion than it actually was, the process is proceeding in a more traditional manner, with bidders making proposals to AOL&#8217;s investment bankers, Allen &#038; Co. and Morgan Stanley (MS).</p>
<p>Sources said that the solicitation of bids is now over and that there are four &#8220;serious&#8221; ones, which one person close to the situation described as a &#8220;U.N. of buyers.&#8221;</p>
<p>Translation: The bidders are likelier to be international Internet companies rather than from the U.S.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because ICQ&#8211;which has 40 to 50 million active users across the globe&#8211;has a stronger overseas business, especially in Germany, Russia, Eastern Europe and Israel.</p>
<p>While I could not get the exact names of those left in the running, the most obvious possibilities include:</p>
<p>Russian investment group Digital Sky Technologies, which has invested in both Facebook and social gaming site Zynga; China&#8217;s huge Tencent-owned QQ instant messaging and gaming service; Naspers, a multimedia giant known as the MIH Group and based in South Africa; Seznam, the largest Web portal in the Czech Republic; and, perhaps, Yandex, Russia&#8217;s leading search engine.</p>

<p>In the U.S., some felt Google (GOOG) would be a bidder for ICQ, though it was Yahoo (YHOO) that apparently made a much lower offer, which took it out of the running.</p>
<p>In any case, the price will likely be much lower than what AOL paid in 1998.</p>
<p>The then-powerful AOL acquired ICQ, which was one of the most explosive online communications tools, for $287 million, with another $120 million in earnouts for the team. It was part of a Tel Aviv, Israel, start-up called Mirabilis.</p>
<p>But ICQ&#8217;s popularity in the U.S. lagged compared with rival services from Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo and Google. In addition, Facebook and Twitter have become major players in the status-update space.</p>
<p>AOL’s AIM service, in contrast, is quite strong, typically clocking in as one of the top instant messaging properties.</p>
<p>ICQ is still based in Israel with about 100 employees and is moderately profitable. Bidders, sources said, are now talking with the ICQ team as part of the process.</p>

Called <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/introducing-google-social-search-i.html">Google Social Search</a>, the new offering is intended to make search results more relevant by enhancing them with personalized social data.</p>
<p>As Google’s Maureen Heymans puts it, &#8220;Your friends and contacts are a key part of your life online. Most people on the web today make social connections and publish web content in many different ways, including blogs, status updates and tweets. This translates to a public social web of content that has special relevance to each person.&#8221;</p>
<p>So, for example, a search for a nearby restaurant would return not only the standard list of official Web sites and mainstream media reviews, but also informal comments made by friends on the Web.</p>
<p>It’s <a href="http://searchengineland.com/google-social-search-launches-gives-results-from-your-trusted-social-circle-28507">an interesting idea</a>&#8211;using the blogs, status updates and tweets from trusted users to refine our searches and make them more personally relevant to us.</p>
<p>That said, there’s a fine line to be tread here between sharing information within a social network and protecting privacy. Of course, as Google (GOOG) notes, the information that it’s indexing is already published publicly on the Web and you need to be signed in to a Google account to access it. So presumably, information that isn’t public won’t show up in social search. Says Google: &#8220;What we&#8217;ve done is surface that content together in one single place to make your results more relevant.&#8221;</p>

<p>Microsoft digital head Qi Lu took to the stage at the <a href="http://www.web2summit.com/web2009">Web 2.0 Summit</a> conference this morning, where he confirmed a &#8220;strategic&#8221; deal with both Facebook and Twitter to integrate real-time information into Microsoft&#8217;s Bing search service.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing/">broke news of those twin deals</a> earlier today.</p>
<p>Bing&#8217;s <a href="http://www.bing.com/twitter">Twitter integration in beta form is now live here</a> (see an image of it below; click on it to make it larger).</p>

Facebook&#8217;s integration will come later, said Microsoft (MSFT).</p>
<p>Before announcing the deal, Lu&#8211;who is a quintessential techie&#8211;first went a bit deep into the weeds to talk about &#8220;how we think about search.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said Lu: &#8220;To start with, we think about search holistically&#8230;it&#8217;s about user intent. What it amounts to is that you are trying to build a mind reader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Top MSN exec Yusuf Mehdi then bounded onstage to talk about the deals with Twitter and Facebook and do a demo, which was what the audience gathered in San Francisco wanted to hear about and see.</p>
<p>&#8220;If today&#8217;s search is about getting to the UPS or the FedEx site, tomorrow is much more complicated,&#8221; said Mehdi, who described the deals as &#8220;strategic.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google (GOOG) is also in talks with both Twitter and Facebook about a similar arrangement, but Microsoft&#8217;s move was a clear one-upsmanship with its search rival.</p>
<p>And what Mehdi showed was impressive, with the ability to sort tweets in a number of ways.</p>
<p>Such information in search will obviously improve results.</p>
<p>Lu gave few specific monetary or operational details of the service&#8211;such as if Facebook and Twitter get a cut of its search advertising revenue or if Microsoft will archive the status updates&#8211;mostly focusing on Twitter, since it is first to roll out.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just the beginning,&#8221; said Lu. &#8220;The Twitter corpus&#8230;is still evolving and emerging.&#8221;</p>
<p>Added Lu at the end: &#8220;Give us a try!&#8221;</p>
