			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yesterday, the social media memory app <a href="http://timehop.com/">Timehop</a> turned Valentine’s Day into Groundhog Day, when it apparently <a href="http://www.betabeat.com/2012/02/14/timehop-picks-worst-day-of-the-year-to-send-duplicate-emails/">spammed</a> some users with multiple emails, reminding them several times of what they were up to a year ago yesterday. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/TimeHop3.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/TimeHop3-380x243.png" alt="" title="TimeHop3" width="380" height="243" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-174975" /></a></p>
<p>The start-up quickly fixed the bug, as Betabeat reported, and issued a cheeky apology. The gaffe was probably annoying to some users who might not have wanted repeat reminders of what they did on hearts-and-flowers day 2011. But Timehop is still hitting the right nerve at the right time.</p>
<p>In other words, it&#8217;s trying to be funny, capitalizing on social media nostalgia in its efforts to chronicle all things pertaining to your digital history. And it&#8217;s looking beyond social networks as it bulks up the service. </p>
<p>A little Timehop history: A couple of months ago, you might have noticed, as I did, that you started to receive emails from “Timehop Abe,” with a Twitter message or Foursquare check-in you posted a year ago. And if you’re sensitive to email spam or simply lose track of all the services you sign up for, as I often do, you might have wondered, why am I getting this email?</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/TimeHop1.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/TimeHop1-380x134.png" alt="" title="TimeHop1" width="380" height="134" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-174976" /></a></p>
<p>Turns out you might have signed up for Foursquare and Seven Years Ago, which was the name of the app created at Foursquare’s first hackathon last year; or maybe PastPosts, a later iteration of the app. In December, the group behind those apps became Timehop &#8212; encompassing Foursquare, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posts.</p>
<p>But Timehop isn&#8217;t like Facebook’s Timeline, compiling a digital album of your past social media activity, said its co-founder, Jonathan Wegener. And it&#8217;s not an app that conducts a search for old tweets or status updates &#8212; something avid social media users complain can be an arduous task. It’s a small, digestible slice of the past, sent via email. </p>
<p>Shortly after the name change, the New York-based start-up <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2012/01/24/timehop-a-time-machine-for-your-social-media-updates-gets-1-1-from-foursquare-founders-and-others/">snagged $1.1 million</a> from a Who’s Who of New York tech start-ups, including Bryce Roberts, Spark Capital, Foursquare’s co-founders and GroupMe’s founders.</p>
<p>It was an interesting show of faith in the company, since Timehop &#8212; despite the fact that it works with mobile app APIs &#8212; has no mobile app of its own, is tied to Facebook Connect for Web sign-ups, and has no real moneymaking strategy in the works. Its user base is in the tens of thousands.</p>
<p>“It’s a &#8216;user-first&#8217; model, like Twitter and Foursquare,” Wegener said. “Making money just isn’t something we’re thinking about yet.”</p>
<p>Email is the company’s biggest asset right now, Wegener said. “Our open rate is great &#8212; over half of the emails we send out get opened and, if nothing else, we could have some sort of killer email advertising business.” <a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/TimeHop2.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/TimeHop2-380x124.png" alt="" title="TimeHop2" width="380" height="124" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-174977" /></a></p>
<p>Wegener said the company realized a while back that it had to change its approach with the daily emails being sent out. Some users complained they were too harsh, including one user who received a jocular reminder that he was at a cemetery for a funeral the year before. Timehop has since hired a part-time advertising writer to craft quips for them.</p>
<p>Timehop is also starting to add more context to its emails, such as references to what was going on in pop culture and the news a year ago to the day.</p>
<p>Eventually, the company hopes to tap into other data &#8212; such as users&#8217; calendar events &#8212; to compile an even bigger digital glimpse of the past, something that <a href="http://www.greplin.com">Greplin</a> has gotten a jump-start on.</p>
<p>&#8220;The data you have on your calendar, the photos you have on your phone and desktop &#8212; that&#8217;s the stuff we&#8217;re finding really interesting from a context perspective,&#8221; Wegener said. </p>
<p>With more and more concerns emerging about the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120215/following-path-address-book-uproar-many-apps-clean-up-their-acts/">sharing of personal data through Web and mobile apps</a>, Wegener is quick to say that Timehop is a private product that doesn’t post on your “walls” or anyone else’s, and that the company doesn’t share email addresses or scan contact lists.</p>
<p>But in order to work, the app does require access to your social networks &#8212; leaving users to decide whether a good laugh from a daily dose of the digital past is worth it to them. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook has a nice tradition of telling us about emerging acronyms found in its users&#8217; status messages each year. It&#8217;s just the kind of thing to make a young person like me feel like an old fogey for not using the hip new slang yet.</p>

<p>Last year&#8217;s winner was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101214/hit-me-up-was-facebooks-breakout-slang-in-2010/">&#8220;HMU,&#8221; for &#8220;hit me up&#8221;</a>; in 2009, it was <a href="https://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=215076352130">&#8220;FML&#8221; for &#8220;(eff) my life.&#8221;</a> (And to be fair, I&#8217;ve definitely seen those posted by my own friends since &#8212; I guess we&#8217;re late adopters.)</p>
<p>So here are this year&#8217;s dual winners for acronyms in the Facebook status messages of U.S. users: &#8220;LMS&#8221; for &#8220;like my status,&#8221; and &#8220;TBH&#8221; for &#8220;to be honest.&#8221;</p>
<p>LMS was the &#8220;fastest-growing meme of 2011,&#8221; by Facebook&#8217;s count; in fact, it often went hand in hand with &#8220;TBH.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/LMSTBH.png"><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-151358" title="LMSTBH" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/LMSTBH.png" alt="" width="433" height="163" /></a>So if a Facebook user posted &#8220;LMS for a TBH,&#8221; she would then hand out individualized honest feedback for any friend who pressed the &#8220;Like&#8221; button next to her status, as in the image at left. It&#8217;s kind of wackily complicated, but at the same time a nice gesture.</p>
<p>Facebook released a dizzying list of other year-end trends, as well, through <a href="https://www.facebook.com/facebook?sk=app_271705986210152">a &#8220;Memology&#8221; app on the official Facebook page</a>. The biggest global peaks of the year were when Osama bin Laden was killed and when the Green Bay Packers won the Super Bowl.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>If you tried using Apple&#8217;s new iCloud service in the last two days and couldn&#8217;t figure out why it wasn&#8217;t working, you weren&#8217;t alone: The service has gone through a series of opening day(s) hiccups.</p>
<p>Apple has helpfully documented them in <a href="http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/systemstatus/">a new status page</a>, which you may want to bookmark. By Apple&#8217;s count, the service has had five foul-ups big enough to warrant an advisory since the system launched October 12.</p>
<p>The good news: Apple says iCloud has been okay as of 5:37 am ET today.</p>

<p>Late last month, BoomTown posted about a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110323/pretty-flipboard-fundraising-at-an-even-prettier-200-million-valuation">huge venture funding effort</a> by the high-profile and even more highly designed social media reading app for the Apple iPad, Flipboard.</p>
<p>Today, its co-founder and CEO Mike McCue confirmed the $50 million round at an eye-popping $200 million valuation, in a wide-ranging interview at the start-up&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., HQ.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re obviously thrilled, because we think it confirms our focus that people want a beautifully designed way to interact with content and to share it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And there is a lot more to come&#8211;on a scale of one to 10, we&#8217;re just at a two or three.&#8221;</p>
<p>The bulk of the new second round of funding&#8211;Flipboard had previously raised $10.5 million&#8211;came from New York-based Insight Venture Partners.</p>
<p>Insight&#8217;s Jerry Murdock said in an interview that he was excited about the idea of &#8220;social endorsement&#8221; that Flipboard was pioneering.</p>
<p>&#8220;We back great entrepreneurs and Flipboard is that and also in an obviously unique position to solve a problem of media consumption in the digital age,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The sky is the limit. Or more precisely it is the best environment to consume curated real-time content for Twitter and Facebook, because of the user experience and social endorsement integration with the content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Insight is also an investor in Twitter.</p>
<p>Also stepping up in the new Flipboard round is Comcast&#8217;s venture arm, as well as previous investors, including Kleiner Perkins, Index Ventures and a spate of well known angels, such as Twitter co-founder and product guru Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder and Asana dude Dustin Moskovitz, the ubiquitous Ron Conway, actor Ashton Kutcher and the investment company of former News Corp. exec Peter Chernin.</p>
<p>&#8220;From a Comcast perspective, we&#8217;re intrigued with Mike and what he&#8217;s doing with content aggregation,&#8221; said <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101115/exclusive-comcasts-top-digital-exec-amy-banse-to-open-new-silicon-valley-equity-fund-for-cable-giant-and-nbc">Amy Banse</a>, Comcast Interactive Capital&#8217;s new head. &#8220;We think we can learn from him and he from us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Co-founded by longtime entrepreneur McCue (Netscape, Tellme) and former Apple iPhone engineer Evan Doll in January, Flipboard <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/meet-flipboard-mike-mccue-talks-about-stealth-social-magazine-start-up-that-just-nabbed-10-5-million">launched to much attention in July</a>.</p>
<p>The elegant Flipboard&#8211;which McCue recently told me in an onstage interview at the South by Southwest conference in Austin had zero revenues thus far&#8211;has changed the game on the consumption of social media.</p>
<p>Its innovative social magazine concept is attempting to make the social networking universe more accessible, consumable and, perhaps most importantly, visually arresting via its rich app.</p>
<p>Essentially, Flipboard pulls information from media RSS feeds and sites such as Twitter and Facebook data streams and then reassembles it in an easy-to-navigate, personalized format in a mobile tablet touchscreen environment.</p>
<p>In its current offering, there are pull-quotes, photos, videos, status updates and even the first paragraphs of linked-out content. There is also the ability to comment and share, as if one were on a social networking or microblogging site.</p>
<p>McCue said the new giant pile of cash will be used to increase its 32-person staff to about 50, international expansion, small acquisitions and more product development on more platforms.</p>
<p>The next in the arena will be the iPhone version of Flipboard, said McCue, followed by one for the Google Android mobile operating system eventually.</p>
<p>Left unsaid, of course, was the need for funding to fight the likelihood of increased competition in the hot space for delivering both professional and social content to consumers on a wide range of devices.</p>
<p>Rivals are varied, such as Silicon Valley&#8217;s most adorable news reader start-up <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Pulse</a> and also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/when-media-giants-attack-cease-and-desist-letter-to-news-reader-zite">Zite</a>, a news reader which was recently sued for copyright infringement by a group of major publishers.</p>
<p>There are bigger potential players, such as Google, which is trying to find various ways to move into the social space.</p>
<p>In fact, said several sources, Google and others have made acquisition approaches to Flipboard, which has instead opted for raising more funding and staying independent for now.</p>
<p>McCue declined to talk about that, but did note that he is not surprised by publisher interest, especially of the worried and wary kind, in the arena.</p>
<p>&#8220;Anyone not respectful of others&#8217; content is going to get in that kind of trouble,&#8221; he said, noting Flipboard has struck deals with 17 big publishers so far, including this morning&#8217;s announcement about a partnership with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110324/video-the-pulse-boys-to-men-talk-about-huge-growth-of-visual-news-reading-app">Oprah Winfrey&#8217;s and Discovery&#8217;s OWN cable network</a>. &#8220;There is not one half to this equation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Right now, the Flipboard app is free and the business plan is advertising and some possible subscription scenarios.</p>
<p>McCue said advertising will be the key to Flipboard&#8217;s business plan in the future, although it&#8217;s not clear if the company will ever sell advertising itself.</p>
<p>Rather, it will partner with publishers seeking better distribution in the explosive tablet and smartphone market, where Flipboard has been gaining traction quickly.</p>
<p>But until that is sorted out, there is now $50 million more in the Flipboard kitty to figure it all out.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this funding, we can grow at the right pace and have a lot of flexibility to get the product right,&#8221; said McCue. &#8220;And, that&#8217;s the most important thing.&#8221;</p>

At the time, the company had 150,000 users. Today, it has more than seven million.</p>
<p>Bubble Motion, which is funded by Sequoia Capital and others, is now launching Bubbly in the Philippines, after releases in India, Indonesia and Japan (chosen because of their deep mobile phone penetration). Its launch partner in the Philippines is Globe Telecom.  <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Bubbly.png"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3446" title="Bubbly" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/Bubbly-275x187.png" alt="" width="154" height="105" /></a></p>
<p>By the midway point of this year, Bubbly will be rolled out to all major carriers in those four countries, for a total potential audience of 800 million.</p>
<p>Bubbly allows users to send each other voice-based status updates. People who follow a user receive an SMS each time a new status message is posted, and pay to listen to the status message with a fee added to their regular phone bill. This can be used both for communicating with friends and family and for subscribing to updates from celebrities.</p>
<p>Users pay either a monthly subscription fee for celebrities in India and Indonesia, or per message in the Philippines and Japan, following the carrier billing styles in each country. The average user gets one to two messages per day.</p>
<p>Celebrities on Bubbly often have two to three times as many followers as they have on Twitter, bragged Bubble Motion CEO Tom Clayton on a phone interview on Wednesday. And that&#8217;s despite the fact that Bubbly costs money and Twitter is free.</p>
<p>Part of the reason is Bubbly has more reach than Twitter in the four countries it has launched in, Clayton said, given it is a mobile service and Twitter is often accessed over the Internet.</p>
<p>But grooming a stable of stars might not be defensible in the long term, given Twitter is ramping up its mobile efforts and celebrities may want to have a broader reach than they can achieve with local phone carriers and voice updates. Clayton said another edge his company has is the infrastructure it has built to deliver voice files&#8211;250 million of them since Bubbly was first launched&#8211;without overloading carrier networks.</p>
<p>Clayton said Bubble Motion, which has raised about $30 million in funding, is not profitable yet but is growing revenue with a direct correlation to its traffic, which is to say, doubling every quarter.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Los Angeles-based start-up <a href="http://collecta.com/">Collecta</a> has shuttered its real-time search business, including a destination site, API and publisher widgets. The two-year-old company isn&#8217;t closing down, but will pivot to unannounced and related projects, said CEO Gerry Campbell in a phone conversation today.</p>
<p>Asked whether creating a real-time search engine is a viable start-up business, Campbell answered quickly: &#8220;No.&#8221; His company&#8217;s pivot is the latest of multiple efforts in the space; last year, OneRiot gave up its search business to pursue real-time advertising, and Ellerdale sold to Flipboard to help add relevance analysis to its social magazine app.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2510" title="COLLECTA" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/COLLECTA-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" />The exit of Collecta and its competitors from real-time search is remarkable given they had swarmed to the space only a couple of years ago.</p>
<p>In 2009, many entrepreneurs and their investors bet that real-time search was the next frontier, recognizing that search engines were having trouble handling the onslaught of status updates and fresh information streaming onto the Web from Twitter and elsewhere.</p>
<p>Given the companies&#8217; emphasis on speed, perhaps it&#8217;s not surprising that they failed and moved on so quickly.</p>
<p>Campbell would not say how many employees Collecta had laid off as part of the change, but he maintained the company has plenty of money in the bank from the <a href="http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;q=collecta+funding">$4.7 million</a> it raised last spring from Dace Ventures and True Ventures. Mashable <a href="http://mashable.com/2011/01/19/startup-collecta-shuts-down-search-engine/">reported</a> earlier today in its story about the Collecta changes that co-founder Jack Moffitt is no longer with the company.</p>
<p>Campbell said Collecta will apply its &#8220;very serious technology&#8221; to other real-time projects, but it will not become a real-time ad engine like OneRiot.</p>
<p>Who&#8217;s left in real-time search? There are still a few, including <a href="http://www.wowd.com/">Wowd</a> and <a href="http://topsy.com/">Topsy</a>.</p>
<p>Topsy&#8217;s tweet search is much more comprehensive than Twitter&#8217;s own, and it serves half a billion queries per month, mostly through its API, Topsy co-founder Rishab Aiyer Ghosh told NetworkEffect via email today. And while Google and Bing also index tweets (and Bing has an extensive relationship with Facebook), they have not fully incorporated social updates into their core search engines.</p>
<p>&#8220;With TweetMeme, CrowdEye and Collecta all pivoting out of it, Topsy may be the only real-time/social search engine left,&#8221; Ghosh said. He maintained that there&#8217;s still an opportunity to build an independent real-time search engine &#8220;done right,&#8221; despite the competition dropping like flies. Topsy has raised $15 million in funding from investors including BlueRun Ventures, Ignition Partners and the Founders Fund.</p>

This week, I took a look at Quora, a question-and-answer site that encourages thoughtful—even long-winded—discussions.</p>

<p>Quora (Quora.com) was launched about six months ago by two former Facebook employees who wanted to create a forum where in-depth questions could be posed and answered. Users vote answers up or down according to how good they are, the idea being that the best answers get pushed to the top of the queue by the community of users. Few of these questions can be answered with a simple yes or no. For example, one question asks, &#8220;What role did social media play with regards to the revolution in Tunisia?&#8221; (See here for the answer with the most votes: <a href="http://www.quora.com/Journalism/What-role-did-social-media-play-with-regards-to-the-revolution-in-Tunisia">http://3.ly/8Gqf</a>.) </p>
<p>One thing to be wary of: There&#8217;s nothing that qualifies the most popular answers as accurate, nor do people who write the most popular answers necessarily qualify as experts. This could lead to confusion or even danger, like medical questions that are answered incorrectly. Quora users are required to register their real email addresses, and some answers are more believable than others according to who answers, like the CEO of Netflix answering a question this past fall about how much the company spends on postage per year (answer: between $500 million and $600 million). </p>
<p>As soon I signed up for Quora by submitting an email and password, I walked through steps to &#8220;follow&#8221; certain topics that interest me—like technology, journalism, media and news—so whenever those topics are discussed, the related questions and answers appear on my Quora home page. I also linked my Twitter and Facebook accounts to my Quora account, which clued Quora in on some topics or people that might interest me according to the information in those accounts. Once these accounts are linked, it&#8217;s a lot easier to share Quora questions or answers with people on Twitter and Facebook. </p>
<p>People, like topics, can be followed. If someone I follow posts a question, answers a question or votes an answer up or down, this activity appears on my Quora home page. </p>
<p>Though Quora may sound simple, I found it uninviting, geeky and poorly explained. The site lacks instructions on how to use it;  people just have to figure it out as they go. For example, a newcomer might not know that Quora answers can be voted up or down by seeing two tiny triangles that appear beside each answer. If I select the up triangle, this indicates I voted for that answer, and news of this vote is shared on the Quora home page of anyone who follows me. A number beside each answer indicates how many votes it has received so far. But unless you&#8217;ve used the site for a while, you wouldn&#8217;t know any of this. </p>
<p>After a few weeks of use, I found I preferred using Quora less for asking my own questions and more for reading other people&#8217;s questions and answers about topics I liked. I occasionally voted on answers to show whether I supported them or not. One user asked me a direct question, which I answered. I asked a question of the Quora community, but no one replied. </p>
<p>I found Quora&#8217;s questions and answers to be rather smart and entertaining. Its Silicon Valley roots are evident in its numerous technology-related questions and answers. I typed &#8220;tennis&#8221; into a box at the top of the screen and one of the first questions that surfaced was &#8220;Is tennis popular in Silicon Valley?&#8221; Instead of that question, I selected &#8220;What is the history of tennis&#8217;s strange scoring system?&#8221; and read the answer with the most votes, which seemed right to the best of my knowledge. Interestingly enough, this answer also included a link to a related article on Wikipedia. </p>

<p>But compared with the rest of the Web, where images, videos, animations and sound entertain website visitors, Quora&#8217;s text-filled pages can come off feeling a bit like textbook reading assignments. This is because all but a handful of questions are answered with just text. Video isn&#8217;t enabled on the site, though founder Charlie Cheever told me that this might be possible in the future. </p>
<p>Another problem with Quora is that most people who use the Internet are conditioned to rely on search engines like Google, Bing or Wikipedia for queries, typing the right key words to get the intended results. And people are often searching for quick answers that take just a couple seconds to read. </p>
<p>Plenty of other question-and-answer forums exist, like Yahoo Answers, which has been around since 2005, ChaCha.com and Ask.com. Facebook introduced Facebook Questions to a small number of its users over the summer, but when asked, a company spokeswoman wouldn&#8217;t say whether or not this offering would be available to all users anytime soon, if at all. </p>
<p>Quora&#8217;s combination of social networking (following topics and people) and in-depth answers helps differentiate it from those services.</p>
<p>Private messages can be sent from one user to another through Quora, and new messages are indicated with a red number that appears over your personal &#8220;Inbox&#8221; at the top of the Quora site. Likewise, when new notifications appear on the home page, a red number is shown above Home at the top of the page. This home page can be viewed in one of three views: Your Feed, All Changes or Followed Questions; users can toggle between these views.</p>
<p>Only people who have created accounts can browse the Quora.com site, though links to content can be opened by anyone. This differs from Twitter.com, which can be visited and searched by anyone regardless of whether or not they have a Twitter account. Quora also lacks one central home page where everyone can go to see every Quora question and answer, or which answer received the most votes on the entire site. Mr. Cheever told me that the site deliberately tries to keep your world small so you can focus on the topics or people you follow. </p>
<p>Quora relies on its community members to police one another, like Wikipedia, and less than 100 users are also granted administrator privileges to do more serious operations like deleting answers that use hate speech or other offensive remarks, which aren&#8217;t permitted according to the site&#8217;s policies. Every edit made to an answer is logged in the Quora system for everyone to see. This helps users understand an entry&#8217;s history on Quora. </p>
<p>This site doesn&#8217;t put much emphasis on interaction with others, though you are notified whenever someone follows you and you may be prompted to suggest topics for someone who starts following you. Like Facebook and Twitter, a list of users who you might want to follow is suggested in Quora.</p>
<p>For now, Quora feels like a website designed for techie insiders without instructions for mainstream users. But its smart community, intriguing questions and way of showing users just the content they want to follow will keep people coming back to the site. With a lot of polishing, Quora could be a social network people use every day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I suppose I&#8217;m a sucker for year-end trend lists, given I&#8217;ve written up reports about trends from <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101213/youtube-in-2010-gregory-brothers-top-indie-chart-bieber-crushes-all/">YouTube</a>, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101213/shocking-bieber-upset-oil-spill-tops-twitters-2010-trends/">Twitter</a> and <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101209/viral-video-2010-as-told-through-google-products/">Google</a> in just the last few days. In short: Bieber, Bieber, Bieber.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/HMU-275x159.jpg" alt="" title="HMU" width="275" height="159" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1221" />Next up is Facebook, which offers aggregated data about trends in the status updates posted by its members, including their activity around major news events and their usage of slang.</p>
<p>The best anecdote from the bit is about a newly popular acronym on Facebook, &#8220;HMU.&#8221; This comes after Facebook noted in 2009 the growth of the trendy whine &#8220;FML. (Explanation: <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=215076352130">We&#8217;ll leave the &#8220;F&#8221; open to your imagination, but the &#8220;ML&#8221; stand for &#8220;My Life.&#8221;</a>) Here&#8217;s the whole explanation of HMU by Facebook data scientist Lars Backstrom:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The shorthand for &#8220;hit me up&#8221; was this year’s biggest surprise. In early 2009, the acronym HMU was virtually unheard of.  Only a few posts a day contained HMU, and half of them were probably typos. By May, however, it started to grow slowly and was averaging about 20 posts a day.  The volume roughly doubled every month, and by the end of 2009 it had risen to 1,600 posts a day&#8211;too modest of a number to be on our radar for last year’s list.</p>
<p>However, HMU continued to grow aggressively throughout 2010, increasing by about 75 percent each month.  By the end of summer, HMU reached 80,000 mentions per day.</p>
<p>In early September, an interesting pattern emerged in how people use HMU.  Until that point, it was spreading like wildfire, but was being used with roughly equal frequency throughout the week.  In September this changed, as usage rates started going through huge swings from day to day.  The reason? Before September the demographic most likely to ask their friends to “HMU” was on summer break and looking to hang out most nights.  Then many of these folks headed back to school, and HMU became a weekend-oriented request.</p></blockquote>
<p>Some notable stats from the Facebook 2010 roundup:</p>
<ul>
<li>At key moments in certain games during the World Cup, as many as 50 percent of all new status updates were World Cup-related.</li>
<li>&#8220;Toy Story 3&#8243; was the movie most mentioned in status updates, followed by &#8220;The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,&#8221; &#8220;Inception,&#8221; &#8220;Alice in Wonderland&#8221; and &#8220;Iron Man 2.&#8221;</li>
<li>Mentions of the iPad and iPhone 4 accounted for 25 million total Facebook status updates. (I&#8217;m not sure what the total number of status updates for the year was.)</li>
<li>A day after the Haiti earthquake Facebook was receiving 1,800 posts per minute on the topic.</li>
<li>Yes, Bieber. People talked about the teenage pop star throughout the year, but the single greatest statused-about Bieber moment was the MTV Video Music Awards.</li>
<li>Facebook could identify 33 separate activity spikes for when each of the Chilean miners was rescued.</li>

<p>Andrew Siegel&#8211;Yahoo&#8217;s head of corporate development, who is in charge of its mergers and acquisitions strategy&#8211;is leaving the company, according to sources.</p>
<p>The former General Electric exec, who came to the Internet giant just over a year ago, is well liked at Yahoo and also has been active in making the rounds in the tech scene in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>Siegel&#8217;s exit is part of a long line of departures of top talent under the leadership of CEO Carol Bartz.</p>
<p>Siegel has made some very prescient moves on game-changing companies for Yahoo to purchase&#8211;including Yelp, Foursquare and Groupon&#8211;but Yahoo has not been able to land them for a variety of reasons.</p>
<p>In Foursquare&#8217;s case, the geolocation hot spot decided to remain independent and take more funding, after also talking to Facebook, and moneybags Google has hip checked Yahoo out of the running for social buying phenom Groupon.</p>
<p>Yelp, the reviews site that had unsuccessful talks with Google too, simply did not want to sell to Yahoo.</p>
<p>Both also were worried about Yahoo&#8217;s future prospects and its top management&#8217;s ability to turn the situation around, multiple sources confirm, as have other top start-ups that Siegel has been interested in.</p>
<p>And while he has bought some smaller companies for Yahoo&#8211;such as <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100317/yahoo-acquires-citizen-sports">Citizen Sports</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100518/yahoo-snaps-up-associated-content-for-90-million-to-counter-aol-and-demand-media">Associated Content</a>&#8211;that&#8217;s been frustrating to Siegel, said sources.</p>
<p>Sources also noted that Siegel has also been commuting to Yahoo&#8217;s Sunnyvale, Calif., HQ from New York, where his family lives&#8211;also a factor in his decision to leave.</p>
<p>He apparently told his Yahoo bosses he was leaving just last week and the company has no replacement as yet.</p>
<p>Yahoo declined to comment about Siegel&#8217;s status.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.alphonsolabs.com/products">Pulse</a>, the visually engaging mobile news reader, is adding a social element today. To date, Pulse (for iPad, iPhone and Android) gave users an easily scannable and image-driven view of their favorite RSS feeds. Now, users will also be able to add their Facebook accounts and flip through material posted by their friends.</p>
<p>The social version of Pulse will be available only for iPad for now, and is to be released this afternoon at 3 pm PT.</p>

<p>Palo Alto, Calif.-based Alphonso Labs, which makes Pulse, recently stopped charging for its apps and raised $800,000 in venture funding. CEO Akshay Kothari came up to San Francisco today and showed me the new iPad app.</p>
<p>The new Pulse for iPad gives users three feeds of Facebook information: Friends&#8217; status updates, friends&#8217; shared links and a historial look at the user&#8217;s own Facebook wall. In keeping with Pulse&#8217;s design, items are image driven and easily swipe-able, and expand into a second panel when users tap on them (see screenshots). Users can add comments or &#8220;Like&#8221; statuses and shared links as they would on Facebook, but this is more of an alternate way to consume content than a full-featured Facebook client.</p>
<p>As with other content feeds, Pulse caches the 25 most recent Facebook updates in each category, so a user who goes somewhere without Internet access could continue to read the content there.</p>
<p>As Alphonso grows from being some young folks with an interesting design approach into a real company, it is exploring closer relationships with publishers like the Huffington Post. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want to be a company that makes a news reader,&#8221; said Kothari. &#8220;We want to help people discover awesome content.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kothari added that with the influx of new users since Pulse went free two weeks ago, Alphonso is looking to improve content discovery by mining user data to show a &#8220;most-emailed&#8221; story list across all feeds.</p>
<p>He said his aim is to get away from the hierarchical structure of Web sites&#8211;where one must return to the homepage before moving on&#8211;and help people scan quickly through potential reading material. Ultimately, Kothari said, recommendations will be done through a balanced combination of machine and social factors.</p>
<p><strong>Further reading:</strong> Earlier this year, Pulse was mentioned as an example app by Steve Jobs, then <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100608/popular-pulse-news-reader-ipad-app-gets-steve-jobs-praise-in-morning-then-booted-from-app-store-hours-later-after-new-york-times-complaint/">yanked from the App Store</a> due to complaints about content usage by the New York Times. The app was <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100608/pulse-ipad-app-returns-to-the-app-store/">quickly reinstated</a> and Alphonso has an open dialogue with the Times about how best to send it new readers and subscribers, according to Kothari.</p>

For some sectors, what it means to &#8220;get social&#8221; is quite obvious: Yelp is made more interesting by learning what restaurants your friends recommend; millions of people love the shared experience of social games like FarmVille; Quora&#8217;s encyclopedia of knowledge is more valuable because it&#8217;s backed up by the social reputation of users&#8217; real names.</p>
<p><img src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/NikeCheerMeOn-275x288.png" alt="" title="NikeCheerMeOn" width="275" height="288" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-872" />But <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20100901/the-icoach-apps-help-runners-go-farther-faster/">motivating people to be healthy and athletic</a> is one of the most interesting and novel extensions of the digital social identity I&#8217;ve seen. Specifically, new features offered by the mobile GPS-tracking app <a href="http://runkeeper.com/">RunKeeper</a>, as well as its competitor <a href="http://nikerunning.nike.com/nikeos/p/nikeplus/en_US/plus/#//dashboard/">Nike+</a>, allow users to tell their Facebook friends when they are starting a run. If users comment on that status post, the encouragement is automatically sent from Facebook to the app and spoken out over the headphones of the runner.</p>
<p>RunKeeper, which makes both iPhone and Android apps, even allows users to automatically transmit their location to a live online map they can share with friends. (You&#8217;re right, that&#8217;s exactly like inviting people to stalk you.)</p>
<p>On a related note, BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher recently wrote about how Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101112/foursquares-crowley-talks-about-a-real-ny-marathon-badge-coming-soon-to-a-d-dive-into-mobile-near-you/">set up his phone to automatically do a check-in</a> at every mile marker as he ran the New York Marathon.</p>
<p>Since I think this idea of monitoring oneself and sharing personal data with the larger community is particularly interesting, I wanted to note that RunKeeper (actually its parent company, FitnessKeeper) <a href="http://runkeeper.com/blog/uncategorized/adding-fuel-to-the-fire">announced today</a> it had raised $1.11 million in funding led by new investor O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures and including LaunchCapital and the company&#8217;s existing angel investors. Boston-based FitnessKeeper is still quite small, with nine people and $1.51 million total raised.</p>

It was just a few years ago that the Helio MVNO came out, but it&#8217;s since been bought by Virgin and discontinued. These days, Myspace has had more basic and sparsely updated mobile offerings, but even so, the company says &#8220;a third of Myspace’s Gen Y users [are] interacting with the site on mobile devices every day.&#8221; Today Myspace announced it&#8217;s modernizing its mobile offerings.</p>
<p>A new Myspace mobile site at <a href="http://m.myspace.com">http://m.myspace.com</a> launches today, formatted for iOS, Android, Palm and &#8220;select Nokia and BlackBerry devices.&#8221; It channels Myspace&#8217;s recent focus as an entertainment destination, with features emphasizing music and celebrity news and access to video content, but no music streaming.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-861" title="myspace_iphoneapp_stream_grid2" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/myspace_iphoneapp_stream_grid2-169x300.jpg" alt="" width="169" height="300" />An overdue iPhone app update is also set to arrive &#8220;in the coming weeks,&#8221; Myspace said. The company&#8217;s <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/myspace-mobile/id284792653?mt=8">existing iPhone app</a> hadn&#8217;t been updated since January 2010, and doesn&#8217;t include push notifications, instant messaging or status updating, according to vocal user complaints in the iPhone app reviews section. The new app will indeed include all those features, said a Myspace spokesperson.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Gnip, which helps social media monitoring companies collect data, and yesterday became <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101117/gnip-becomes-twitters-first-authorized-data-reseller/">the first company authorized to resell Twitter data</a>, has raised $2 million in funding.</p>
<p>In a bit of coincidental timing, said Gnip CEO Jud Valeski, the filing for the round was <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1430622/000143062210000003/xslFormDX01/primary_doc.xml">posted yesterday</a> on the SEC site (which is where I found it). He confirmed the round amount as $2 million, coming mostly from previous investor Foundry Group and including First Round Capital again. This brings the company to $6.6 million raised so far.</p>
<p><a href="http://gnip.com/"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-544" title="Gnip2" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/11/Gnip2-150x150.png" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>Gnip&#8217;s deal with Twitter finally brings pricing clarity to usage of Twitter&#8217;s data streams, at least for analytics and monitoring companies. The company has permission to collect significant revenue on the streams. Previously, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101110/twitter-firehose-too-intense-take-a-sip-from-the-garden-hose-or-sample-the-spritzer/">Twitter&#8217;s only paid data option was the Firehose</a> full stream of all user status messages, for which it charged different amounts depending on the size of the customer and what it was doing with the data. While Microsoft paid $10 million to incorporate the Firehose into its real-time search, some start-ups that create Twitter clients were getting the Firehose for free.</p>
<p>As I reported yesterday, Gnip will offer social media monitoring companies the Halfhose (50 percent of Tweets at a cost of $30,000 per month), the Decahose (10 percent of Tweets for $5,000 per month) and the Mentionhose (all mentions of a user including @replies and re-Tweets for $20,000 per month), with the caveat that they can&#8217;t publicly display the data.</p>
<p>Boulder, Colo.-based Gnip has gone through a big turnaround in the last year. In September &#8217;09, it laid off seven of its 12-person staff, <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2009/09/28/gnip-clips-60-percent-of-staff/">saying</a> the huge increase in creation of social media data had overwhelmed the company&#8217;s self-built database and it needed to start over. In May of this year CEO Eric Marcoullier left the company, leaving it in the hands of his co-founder Valeski. Marcoullier, who had previously founded IGN and MyBlogLog, is now working on another start-up, the &#8220;Foursquare for Web sites&#8221; <a href="http://onetruefan.com/">OneTrueFan</a>.</p>
<p>But a deal with Twitter&#8211;a company that has historically expanded into its developers&#8217; territory much to their dismay, rather than blessing third-party companies with partnerships&#8211;is a firm indication that Gnip is back on track.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Facebook has called the press to yet another launch event, this time in San Francisco for a new Facebook email system. Luckily, they brought their own cafeteria chairs so our butts will feel right at home after a <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101115/hey-facebook-this-launch-better-not-be-boring/">long summer of launches</a> at the company&#8217;s Palo Alto, Calif., office.</p>
<p>At the St. Regis hotel in San Francisco, Mark Zuckerberg says young people say email is too slow. They prefer Facebook or SMS.</p>
<p>Zuck: IM or SMS are much simpler, and people want lighter-weight things that they can use all over the place. So we need&#8230;a modern messaging system.</p>
<p>350 million people actively use messaging on Facebook, in part because it&#8217;s really simple. Four billion messages are sent per day. This is &#8220;private, private sharing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Next-generation messaging would be: seamless, informal, immediate, personal, simple, minimal and short. (Those are a lot of synonyms, no?)</p>
<p>&#8220;This is not email. Email is one way that people will use this system, but it&#8217;s not even the primary way we think they will use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now a three-panel slide is up showing the key topics of the announcement&#8211;&#8221;seamless messaging,&#8221; &#8220;conversation history&#8221; and &#8220;social inbox.&#8221; Zuckerberg promises, &#8220;We can do some really good filtering for you to make sure you only see messages you really care about.&#8221;</p>
<p>Zuck brings on Andrew Bosworth to demo the product.</p>
<p>So this is actually a relaunch of the &#8220;Messages&#8221; tool. Not email-specific. Takes all correspondence between two friends and puts them in one place.</p>
<p>Everyone gets an @facebook.com email address with their username. &#8220;As much as we&#8217;re providing an email address, the system&#8217;s not email,&#8221; says Boz&#8211;more like instant messaging.</p>
<p>Boz uses convo about dinner plans as an example, with messaging across different platforms, including IM on Facebook, email, iPhone notifications, etc. The example restaurant is Piccino in San Francisco, where, fun fact, I was for a short time the Foursquare mayor. No longer though.</p>
<p>Integrates with Jabber, IMAP and one more I missed. (Sorry, first time liveblogging with this tool!)</p>
<p>Boz shows the history of Facebook messages with his girlfriend of the last four years. But doesn&#8217;t include their instant messages and other communication. Individual messages may not be profound, but collectively they provide a narrative about someone I care about, says Boz.</p>
<p>Facebook rebuilt infrastructure for this project, because it&#8217;s especially important that messages don&#8217;t get lost.</p>
<p>Instead of Cassandra (which FB created for email search and then open sourced), the company chose something new: HBase. They also used Haystack, Thrift, ZooKeeper and memcache.</p>
<p>This is the biggest engineering team Facebook has ever put together for a launch&#8211;15 people, Boz says.</p>
<p>Users have three categories: 1) Messages: Conversations with actual people. 2) Other: Email lists and the like. And 3) Junk.</p>
<p>The big idea is &#8220;picking up where you left off&#8221; no matter what device or medium.</p>
<p>This project has been in the works for the last 15 months.</p>
<p>Zuck: &#8220;This is not an email killer. This is a messaging system that includes email as a part of it. We don&#8217;t expect anyone to wake up tomorrow and say, I&#8217;m going to shut down my Yahoo account or my Gmail account and switch to Facebook.&#8221;</p>
<p>(Read: You silly press, we&#8217;re not competing with Gmail, we&#8217;re bigger than Gmail!)</p>
<p>Rolling out slowly over the next few months, starting with an invite system (ha! how Gmail!).</p>
<p>Oh, about IMAP: No support yet, so users can&#8217;t synch with other email systems. But Facebook wants to add later.</p>
<p>Interesting: Facebook messages won&#8217;t have subject lines. You just have a single messaging history with each person.</p>
<p>If you have been interacting with someone through email, then we&#8217;ll send replies back to email. You can indicate that you want a message to go directly to their phone. If you&#8217;re online, you get a message as an IM.</p>
<p>Boz: This is the end of &#8220;BRB&#8221; or &#8220;GTG.&#8221; Follows you wherever you go. (Sounds ominous when you say it like that.)</p>
<p>Question from audience: Will you add voice or video?</p>
<p>Zuck: For now only SMS, IM, email and FB messages&#8211;all are text. &#8220;We think this is a pretty big step by itself, and one we just wanted to take before we get started on the next set of things.&#8221;</p>
<p>Question from audience: Will you have contextual ads?</p>
<p>Zuck: Yes, ads work the same as on the rest of Facebook, but not targeted specific to content in a message.</p>
<p>Zuck on Gmail competition: &#8220;They have a great product. Email is still really important to a lot of people. If we build a great product that people want to use, then people will use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Question from audience: Can users go off the record like in Gmail?</p>
<p>Boz: Users can delete any message.</p>
<p>Zuck: Off the record like in IM doesn&#8217;t make sense because users may be receiving messages in a different way than you send them. If someone gets something in email instead of IM it would be unnatural to have it off the record.</p>
<p>Question: How will this treat communication with people who are not on Facebook?</p>
<p>Boz: You can communicate with whoever you want to, and will have access to all that history of the conversation.</p>
<p>Zuck: If you&#8217;re not a part of the FB system and outside the social graph, your emails to FB users will go into &#8220;Other&#8221; folder to start off with, rather than the main. Once the recipient says you&#8217;re an important person, you&#8217;ll go into the main folder.</p>
<p>Question: What about silly joke emails from your mom? Can you filter those?</p>
<p>Zuck: There&#8217;s only one thread with every person.</p>
<p>Question: What about Facebook employee email addresses?</p>
<p>Zuck: &#8220;After a long discussion, the Farm Bureau has agreed to give us fb.com. And in the terms of that we have agreed not to sell farm subsidies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Facebook hasn&#8217;t mentioned this, but Microsoft just emailed to make sure people know they&#8217;re involved.</p>
<p>&#8220;As part of Facebook’s new messaging system: http://apps.facebook.com/facebooklive/ &#8211;Microsoft is integrating the Office experience. Over the coming months, customers will be able to access and share Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents as attachments to their Facebook messages. Sharing new ideas, key points of inspiration and important information just got easier&#8211;even when the need to access or share that content strikes in the middle of your latest status update.&#8221;</p>
<p>Question: Can you fill in the blanks of associating email addresses with Facebook friends?</p>
<p>Boz: Not yet, but it&#8217;s imaginable.</p>
<p>(Uh-oh&#8211;how is this going to work when people have multiple contacts for themselves?)</p>
<p>Question: Storage?</p>
<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re a good user, you have no concern. For people who try to find limits, they will find them.&#8221; Another ominous comment from Boz.</p>

Posting <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/SIRIUS-XM-Radio-Reports-Third-prnews-1508953015.html?x=0&#038;.v=1">third-quarter earnings</a> this morning, the company reported a profit of 2 cents a share, besting analyst estimates for a break-even quarter. Revenue rose to $717.5 million from $618.7 million. Sirius ended the quarter with 19.8 million subscribers, thanks to the net addition of 334,727 subscribers, more than triple the  102,295 it gained in the quarter a year earlier.  “Today, we are stronger than ever,” CEO Mel Karmazin said during a call with analysts. &#8220;We are in a position to soon surpass 20 million subscribers.&#8221; </p>
<p>That should be an easy thing to pull off, particularly if the company manages to renew its deal with Howard Stern, whose contract expires at the end of the year. But it hasn&#8217;t done that yet, according to Karmazin. “We had hoped that prior to this call we would have an update on the status of Howard Stern with Sirius XM,” he said this morning. “We do not have any update today, other than to say discussions continue.&#8221;</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s how Yahoo&#8217;s top brass and board&#8211;with the help of its newly re-engaged crisis-management PR firm, Abernathy MacGregor&#8211;are already trying to spin the latest executive turmoil to hit the company:</p>
<p>Trashing those on the way out, to take focus off those remaining who have been just as responsible for driving the Internet icon and claiming that this is all part of yet another well-planned reorganization at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t believe most of it for a second. Some of it is corporate politics as usual, some of it rejiggering of events, some just not true at all.</p>
<p>After BoomTown&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">scoop earlier today</a> that Yahoo&#8217;s U.S. head Hilary Schneider, as well as Audience head David Ko and VP of Media Jimmy Pitaro, would be departing the company&#8211;all of which Yahoo is still planning to announce after the markets close on Friday&#8211;here comes this gem in a <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704116004575522741904235112.html">follow-up story in The Wall Street Journal</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;[Yahoo CEO Carol] Bartz, who joined Yahoo in January 2009, is in the midst of a turnaround effort. People familiar with the matter said she is removing the company&#8217;s old guard to assemble a new team.&#8221;</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s parse this ridonkulous spin-addled blame game, shall we?</p>
<p>Bartz is, in fact, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones">very person who picked all those execs for prime responsibility</a> in her <em>last</em> reorg.</p>
<p>If they were so incompetent, why not dump them much quicker? After all, it&#8217;s not like the problems have not been mounting for months and months, with more and more talent taking off.</p>
<p>In addition, the exec exodus at Yahoo over the last year has been unrelenting and broad, encompassing way too many employees for her to act as if it were all planned and okay.</p>
<p>As to the &#8220;midst of a turnaround effort&#8221; canard that Bartz keeps insisting on, even comparing herself to Apple (AAPL) CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100917/shooting-from-carol-bartzs-hip-apples-iads-are-just-awful-which-is-why-yahoo-buys-them">Steve Job&#8217;s epic journey to return that legendary company to health</a>?</p>
<p>Um, we are deep in the second year of the Bartz regime, and there appears to be no iPod-like save in sight, and it&#8217;s a little long in the tooth to keep using the turnaround excuse for all that has <em>not</em> yet happened under her command.</p>
<p>Which is to say, stock with a pulse and real growth across all metrics, as Facebook and Google (GOOG), to name a few, are showing.</p>
<p>In addition, it was Bartz herself who handed over a lot of the responsibility for the revival of Yahoo to Schneider.</p>
<p><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2010/09/wes1075fc.69885_md-275x184.jpg" alt="" title="wes1075fc.69885_md" width="275" height="184" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-34481" /></p>
<p>Which meant Schneider had to be thrown under the wheels of the bus in the Journal by dragging out a very old&#8211;and tangential to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/liveblogging-yahoos-second-quarter-earnings-call-how-do-you-solve-a-problem-like-flat-revenue/">much larger flat revenue crisis</a> at Yahoo&#8211;newspaper deal as pretty wet cannon fodder:</p>
<p>&#8220;Ms. Schneider is leaving because officials haven&#8217;t been satisfied with her performance, according to people familiar with the matter. Ms. Schneider was responsible for a 2006 deal with industry group Newspaper Consortium, in which Yahoo sold ads for newspaper websites and print editions. The effort continues but has not met Yahoo&#8217;s expectations, according to a person close to the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>Memo to readers: &#8220;People familiar with the matter,&#8221; I am guessing, would be current Yahoo execs.</p>
<p>The fact of the matter is that there have been both critics and admirers of Schneider at Yahoo, which comes as no surprise for one of its top execs. Some consider her smart and canny, while others complain of indecisiveness and slowness to act.</p>
<p>And, she has definitely had some very big whiffs, including the newspaper consortium, but most especially not finding an ad sales chief to replace Joanne Bradford, who left in March, about which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100802/yahoo-restructures-u-s-ad-sales-force-with-no-new-head-but-apparently-a-lot-of-prince-charmings/">I gave her a hard time when a very squishy structure</a> was announced.</p>
<p>And, right now, sources tell me, Yahoo&#8217;s upcoming quarterly report could be an even tougher one.</p>
<p>And that falls to Schneider, of course, who has been in charge of its many partnerships, as well as advertising sales across the key Americas region.</p>
<p>Perhaps good reason for an ouster, except I have been tracking Schneider&#8217;s status for many months now, since hearing from many sources&#8211;not her, ever, in case you wanted to know&#8211;that she had told Bartz she wanted out.</p>
<p>Maybe that is what began to sour the boss on Schneider. But to now suddenly call her performance poor seems unusual, especially when you can just as easily point to Yahoo&#8217;s disastrous and pricey marketing campaigns&#8211;it is definitely <em>not</em> You!&#8211;helmed by CMO Elisa Steele, which has failed to move the needle on key user metrics.</p>

<p>But she has a tight relationship with Bartz, so she&#8217;s all right, jack? I am dizzy from all the spinning.</p>
<p>In other words, execs make mistakes and there is a lot of blame to go around and&#8211;as the old saying goes&#8211;the buck really does stop with Bartz.</p>
<p>But, guess what? Perhaps it should be noted that Bartz has also misstepped badly of late by making a series of wild remarks that have seriously angered many partners and other companies in Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>And I have heard from countless and very significant investors, all of whom are deeply concerned about her tone and recent public comments.</p>
<p>Just ask <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100726/yahoo-japan-confirms-google-switch-for-both-paid-and-algo-search">Yahoo Japan&#8217;s Masayoshi Son</a>. Or <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100916/apparently-yahoos-bartz-didnt-get-the-memo-about-avoiding-land-wars-in-asia">Alibaba&#8217;s Jack Ma in China</a>. Or the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100917/shooting-from-carol-bartzs-hip-apples-iads-are-just-awful-which-is-why-yahoo-buys-them">fine folks over at Apple</a> in Cupertino, Calif.</p>
<p>And, I can also report that several execs at Yahoo&#8217;s new search technology partner, Microsoft, are also increasingly alarmed. Said one to me yesterday: &#8220;It is becoming a little unsettling.&#8221;</p>
<p>I can say for certain that Ko, who will doubtlessly be the next to get dinged, left on his own motor, telling Bartz himself recently.</p>
<p>He was quickly followed by Pitaro, who, as I <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100928/exclusive-yahoo-exec-churn-continues-with-media-head-pitaro-ready-to-bolt/">reported earlier this week</a>, is headed to another big company. No matter what the spin, his departure is a big loss, as he is well-liked inside and outside the company.</p>
<p>Then Schneider rounded out the latest trio of execs to go.</p>
<p>Thus, sources said, Yahoo is about to go on the offense, which is the expected thing to do, ready to announce a plan to move most of the product organization under Chief Product Officer Blake Irving.</p>
<p>The former Microsoft (MSFT) online exec is as sharp as a tack, in my experience, and clearly an even sharper corporate player, recently bringing in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100909/another-microsoft-exec-to-yahoo-joining-other-ex-softies/">series of his old cohorts</a> from the software giant to take over big jobs at Yahoo.</p>
<p>He&#8217;s obviously now won some version of a corporate power play, and is now in favor with Bartz. But that means he&#8217;s being handed the entire thing.</p>
<p>Apparently, Irving has told numerous people that he plans to &#8220;rip it all down&#8221; and streamline the whole organization.</p>
<p>More rearranging at the company that has moved around the corporate living room umpteenth times over the past several years? Except it is still essentially the same room and same house.</p>
<p>Okay, Irving should probably have his choice of where the sofa goes, but as one exec wisely told me tonight: &#8220;Yahoo needs to build great products, not have another reorg&#8230;.It needs a win.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, just as board member Eric Hippeau apparently said at a recent meeting to deal with the latest executive kerfuffle.</p>
<p>Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock&#8211;who has presided over so many stumbles over the years that I have lost count&#8211;said to the room: &#8220;We need crisis management.&#8221;</p>
<p>Countered Hippeau, a longtime Internet exec who is now CEO of the Huffington Post: &#8220;What we need is revenue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. And innovation. And a vision. And, most of all, spin-free leadership.</p>

<p>BoomTown motored on down the lovely Highway 280 in Silicon Valley to Facebook to hear execs talk about a new geo-location feature the powerful social networking site is rolling out today.</p>
<p>And, the new name of the service, which will be deeply integrated into its current update system, as I reported earlier, will be &#8220;Places.&#8221;</p>
<p>The service seems to be basic and useful&#8211;it is <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20100818/facebook-places-review/">reviewed here by Walt Mossberg</a>&#8211;allowing people to post their location on the Wall of their Facebook profile, much as you might a photo or video.</p>
<p>There will be no games, no mayors and no special discounts either in Facebook Places&#8211;just plain and simple checking in and, presumably, taking names.</p>
<p>Privacy is a big focus of the launch of Places, which will allow users to decline to be placed by others.</p>
<p>The $100 million question is how much Facebook will allow the integration of other competing services including Foursquare.</p>
<p>A lot, it seems, as sources said Foursquare Founder and CEO Dennis Crowley was invited to appear for the announcements, perhaps to minimize the idea that this is a Foursquare-killer.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not. <em>Today.</em></p>
<p><strong>4:30 pm PT:</strong> Of course, I and a badillion other reporters arrived on time, to 1050 Page Mill Road in Palo Alto, Calif. in a mass of media force that would probably better be deployed on more weighty topics than the particulars of checking in from some hip dive bar in the Mission neighborhood of San Francisco.</p>
<p>After some waiting, we were finally bussed&#8211;or perhaps the better word is geo-located&#8211;to the actual HQ of Facebook nearby, and shepherded (just like sheep that we are!) into its cafeteria.</p>

<p>Except it had been duded up like a tiki lounge with palm trees and a driftwood stage. I felt as though I was suddenly on an episode of &#8220;Gilligan&#8217;s Island.&#8221; Cue Ginger for her big song number with the coconut bra!</p>
<p><em>Hey, Skipper&#8230;</em></p>
<p><strong>5:18 pm:</strong> That skipper would be CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who was&#8211;as usual&#8211;dressed in jeans and a t-shirt and was endearingly awkward as always. It&#8217;s kind of touching that Zuckerberg still tries to have the just-us-guys posture, despite all the fame and fortune.</p>
<p>He quickly announced Facebook Places, across the U.S. tomorrow, on an Apple (AAPL) iPhone app and a mobile Web site.</p>
<p>He talked about deciding to finally launch Places after a dinner out with his girlfriend, when, deploying a test version, they realized another Facebook exec, Chris Cox and his fiance were nearby at another restaurant.</p>
<p>It was an earth-shaking moment, implied Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>Ahem, knock, knock&#8230;that&#8217;s Foursquare! Have you <em>heard</em> of it?</p>
<p>Yes, Facebook has been ogling the hot New York location start-up for a year, which is precisely why we are all here.</p>
<p><strong>5:28 pm:</strong> Michael Sharon, the product manager of Places gave us a little run-through of the service, which was about what you would expect.</p>
<p>Foursquare except cleaner. Booyah except no games. Gowalla except, well, not Gowalla.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s important is that it is very integrated into Facebook&#8217;s current features, such as the Wall and status updates. Which is the right thing to do since Facebook has no business being all trendy.</p>
<p>The plains are covered with the bodies of pioneers, as they say, so what Facebook Places is, essentially, is a fast follow.</p>
<p>Sharon moved onto privacy, the big gorilla in the room. You have to opt-in and agree and click here and default to off and you can only tag your friends and you can also block them too.</p>

<p>Also, per Woody Allen&#8217;s &#8220;Bananas,&#8221; all Facebook citizens will be required to change their underwear every half-hour. Underwear will be worn on the outside, so we can check.</p>
<p>Next, lots of info about APIs, so partners can also be part of Facebook&#8217;s geo-locating universe.</p>
<p>Up trotted Gowalla&#8217;s CTO and Co-founder Scott Raymond, who showed off Gowalla and Facebook integration.</p>
<p>Then a Foursquare exec&#8211;not Crowley, who has apparently checked in at a Chipolte in New York at the time of the places launch&#8211;loped up to say how great it all is. Just great! Really! Frankly, what else would the Foursquares say at this point.</p>
<p>Next: Yelp dude. Great! Just great! Integration! Check-in and pull your Facebook friends into the Yelp app.</p>
<p>Of course, it would not be a set without Booyah&#8217;s Keith Lee. Loves it! Fun! Just great!</p>
<p>This felt like a slow-moving version of invasion of the geo-location snatchers, a parade of glassy-eyed hostages, some scurvy mates walking the platform plank. <em>Aaaaarrrr.</em></p>
<p><strong>5:50 pm:</strong> Finally, Facebook&#8217;s product head Chris Cox, who is perhaps one of the more fetching geeks out there, bounded onstage to be all fetching and smart.</p>
<p>He talked about places like home, work and, um, bars. Well, actually, community locations, quoting Ray Oldenburg.</p>

<p>I was honestly not really listening to him at all, because I was riveted on his new haircut, which is just like the buzzed one Vince got on &#8220;Entourage&#8221; this season.</p>
<p>Errant thought: Those guys on &#8220;Entourage&#8221; would <em>never</em> check in from a bar! They are totally busy getting their groove on with the ladies&#8211;even Johnny Drama&#8211;and chillaxing with the doobies and tequila!</p>
<p>When I checked in again mentally, Cox was still chattering away about some glowing phone that tells you everything that happened in that bar forever and ever, since everyone was checking in and memorializing the place over time.</p>
<p>Good god, isn&#8217;t it enough that Facebook has all those drunkey-drunk photos from college students nationwide.</p>
<p>No! It wants it all! Yay, all our our drunkey-drunk moments will now be preserved in check-ins for all eternity!</p>
<p>Honey, remember when I ended up in the gutter here? Fun times for our grandkids to unearth one day!</p>
<p><strong>5:58 pm:</strong> The Skipper Zuckerberg was back to moderate the Q&#038;A.</p>
<p>Privacy questions about making private places public. If a lot of people are there, it becomes public.</p>
<p>Next: What up with monetization with deals? Zuckerberg notes that Places is at its starting point and &#8220;certainly you can imagine these things in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>There was a question about how Places started. Well, IMHO, the moment when Facebook saw Foursquare&#8217;s innovation and freaked out.</p>
<p>A very goofy question about what happens when drunkey-drunk places shut down and all those memories are gone, which made me wonder if the reporter asking was drunkey-drunk.</p>
<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s not a problem we can solve,&#8221; said Cox.</p>
<p>Good answer.</p>

<p>According to numerous sources close to the situation, Foursquare is in the final stages of striking a funding deal with the very venture firm&#8211;Andreessen Horowitz&#8211;that had publicly dissed the hot social location site and walked away from earlier talks.</p>
<p>The deal is likely to be completed and announced by early next week, at a valuation of about $80 million, barring unusual hiccups.</p>
<p>&#8220;Light at the end of a very long and very twisty tunnel,&#8221; joked one source familiar with the situation.</p>
<p>Indeed, the wrapping-up of what has been a very convoluted funding process comes after a series of missteps and switchbacks over what&#8217;s next for the start-up, which allows users to &#8220;check in&#8221; from various places.</p>
<p>The last curve came with serious talks for Foursquare to be acquired by Facebook, which came very close to happening&#8211;&#8220;one inch to the end zone,&#8221; as one person close to the situation described it.</p>
<p>But those discussions broke off largely due to price, strategy and control issues, sources said.</p>
<p>In addition, Foursquare <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100416/can-yahoo-nab-foursquare-for-125-million-or-will-vcs-prevail-the-race-for-the-hot-mobile-start-up-nears-its-end">had recently been in serious acquisition talks</a> with Yahoo (YHOO) as well, along with endless rounds of chatter with a variety of prominent Silicon Valley VCs&#8211;including Khosla Ventures, Accel Partners and Institutional Venture Partners&#8211;over the last several months.</p>
<p>The overhyped interest is because Foursquare and many others like it have seen strong growth and much innovation, although it is not clear yet if that will translate into solid businesses. Still, many location-based companies are girding up with investments in order to race ahead.</p>
<p>That has also been the case with Foursquare, except its funding process has been unusually complicated, in part due to indecision and in part due to some very noisy deal-making.</p>
<p>In fact, that&#8217;s what initially scotched very advanced funding talks between Foursquare and Andreessen Horowitz.</p>
<p>But after discussions with Andreessen Horowitz and other firms were leaked to the media, the high-flying New York-based Foursquare was smacked back hard by the higher-profile Silicon Valley firm, which is helmed by Internet icon Marc Andreessen and his longtime partner, Ben Horowitz.</p>
<p>In an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100419/exclusive-andreessen-horowitz-drops-out-of-funding-race-for-foursquare/">exclusive interview with BoomTown in April</a>, Horowitz took the unusual step of talking publicly about VC frustrations that are typical in deals around hot companies.</p>
<p>At the time, Horowitz acted as if he were checking out of Foursquare:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>&#8220;We withdrew our funding offer to Foursquare and we are out,&#8221; said Horowitz in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;This is playing out too much in public and clearly someone has an interesting agenda here, so this is not something we want to participate in.&#8221;</p>
<p>In addition&#8211;after making an offer three weeks ago at valuations lower than have been reported, though he would not specify the exact number&#8211;Horowitz said he felt the company had conducted a &#8220;process that is very long and undefined.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>A company run by VC-pampered young geek dudes centered on game-playing was playing silly, immature deal games? This comes as a <em>complete</em> shock to&#8230;well, no one!</p>

<p>At the same time, Horowitz left the door open. &#8220;If the process was changed, we still like the company,&#8221; he said then. &#8220;But since it has been long and undefined, it is prone to manipulation.&#8221;</p>
<p>That sentiment obviously changed recently, as <a href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/06/12/andreessen-horowitz-to-win-the-foursquare-investor-badge/">TechCrunch reported</a> two weeks ago.</p>
<p>And indeed, it looks like Horowitz finally won that contest of hardball with Foursquare CEO and co-founder Dennis Crowley.</p>
<p>But it was a very close call, said many, who noted that Foursquare thought acquisition talks with Facebook were almost in the bag, something many sources said Crowley had wanted most of all.</p>
<p>And in fact, Facebook would have been a natural fit for Foursquare, on paper. The only fit, really: Facebook&#8217;s users already get the status-update concept, as well as the game-play part of the service.</p>
<p>And as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100506/are-you-ready-foursquare-here-comes-facebook/">MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka previously wrote</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;[Facebook] has something Foursquare won&#8217;t be able to boast of for a very long time: A sales team to match the location service up with big brands and a self-service ad platform that local businesses can plug into.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nonetheless, sources close to the company said Foursquare is now saying it wants more independence and more cash over stock in any deal with the social networking giant.</p>
<p>Dictating terms to the powerful Facebook seems unlikely to be effective. And sources familiar with Facebook&#8217;s thinking said the company simply felt it could do its own location service better, as well as federate many others in the arena.</p>
<p>Could that change? Sure, because when it comes to Foursquare, it seems like a <em>wacky</em> turn could be just around the corner!</p>
<p>Still, sources said that while the term sheet Foursquare has from Andreessen Horowitz is not quite done, it is nearly complete, with some remaining back and forth about the exact valuation for the social location start-up, the funding number and other small issues.</p>
<p>A spokeswoman for the firm declined comment.</p>
<p>Foursquare&#8217;s current investors&#8211;who recently gave it a bridge investment&#8211;will also participate in the new round.</p>
<p>Foursquare&#8217;s original $1.35 million funding was raised from Union Square Ventures and O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, as well as some well-known angel investors.</p>
<p>And then, after all the papers are signed, hopefully, we&#8217;ll all see what Foursquare can do with a new pile of money.</p>
<p>Of course, that is the greatest unknown of all.</p>

<p><strong>Geek Crush</strong>: Jeff Bezos of Amazon (AMZN). I really try to live by his regret avoidance principle. Basically, try to look forward and see what you would regret not doing, then just do that now.</p>
<p><strong>Family Affair</strong>: I take after my mother&#8217;s father. He was an entrepreneur. He ran a cigar store in Muscatine, Iowa. And he just had it going on. Much more than my other grandfather, who worked at the phone company and was miserable.</p>
<p><strong>Moment of Geek Spark</strong>: In the late 1990s, this guy who was PhD student at Stanford University showed me the really early Web. It wasn&#8217;t the Web yet. You could log into the computer at the University of Michigan from here in San Francisco. At that time, you had a very physical sense of, &#8220;Holy crap, I&#8217;m inside the library in Michigan, but I&#8217;m here in San Francisco. Now, you are jacked into Facebook and have no idea where that thing is.</p>

<p>You&#8217;ve got it. We are a location-based check-in app that enables sharing. You can share your location via Twitter or Facebook, as well as sharing photos and earning points.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Wait, so there are points, but no game?</em></p>
<p>Yeah, so, think of it like a frequent-flier program. You accumulate points, or, in our case, bronze, silver, gold or platinum status at a given location. We&#8217;ve only just released the app, but we&#8217;ve been in talks with various national brands, say, Tully&#8217;s Coffee, to start offering incentives for achieving specific status at a location.</p>
<p>The idea is that once we reach scale, we&#8217;ll be able to go to a business and say, &#8220;Hey, we have 2,500 people who are gold members that want a $3 off on their coffee.&#8221; We&#8217;ve got a Web site that allows a user who has gone to a place, say, 10 times and has silver status to say that they want a free drink. If you then get 250 people who have the same status to click that they like that specific idea, then one of our business development people can go to the restaurant and cut a deal.</p>
<p>We want to build this affinity program for every place in the world.</p>

<p class="question"><em>There is a sense around location-based services that they have huge potential, if only it could be realized. What is it? What are we waiting for?</em></p>
<p>Ever since I was at Friendster, I felt that associating people with a place was powerful. I think what we are seeing is a convergence of the location-based services and recommendations. I sort of see Yelp right now as sort of like Yahoo (YHOO) in Web 1.0&#8211;very good curation of recommendations.</p>
<p>At some point there will be this critical mass of location data, right? And then someone will come along and be a Google (GOOG). Instead of asking people what they think, and doing this very hard process of curation, we will be able to analyze the data about behaviors and do something altogether more powerful with it.</p>
<p>When you make the shift from reviewing and writing about things to observing what people actually do, you have the most substantial recommendation database of places that has ever existed. That transition hasn&#8217;t happened, but is about to.</p>
<p class="question"><em>What learnings from your Friendster experience should be shared with the Foursquare of the world?</em></p>
<p>I&#8217;d say first, don&#8217;t declare the game over. When Friendster came out, people were saying that this was it, and there was no more. It was over when MySpace came out. It was over when Tribe was gonna nail the local thing. You just have to stay at it.</p>
<p>The other thing is, be careful about being too much of a gimmick, rather than just a value proposition. You had the whole tagged thing with MySpace, where they were trying to use game dynamics to motivate behavior. Then you had Facebook come along and took all that out. There was no thing like, &#8220;Hey, get 50 friends and get the super-friendly Zuckerbadge.&#8221; Nothing like that. They just stuck to the value proposition.</p>
<p class="question"><em>Everyone was watching Facebook this week for a big location announcement. How are you guys planning to adjust?</em></p>
<p>We&#8217;ve had a Facebook app in development for a while. I think we&#8217;ll probably be releasing it this week. I think the lack of announcement from Facebook is an indication that they are going to do something, but that they are having an internal debate on exactly how.</p>
<p>It probably centers around the following: They are trying to figure out whether to do latitude and longitude, or whether they want to put in the places themselves. Once they&#8217;ve figured out that they want to do places, they need to decide if they want to do curated places&#8211;do they want to do, &#8220;Cornell: or just leave it to fan pages. Once they do that, they need to decide how much of their mobile app to devote to it. They are probably trying to figure out what that looks like.</p>
<p>Once that&#8217;s all figured out, they have to decide if they want to put it all in the API and let us use it to make a killer recommendation engine, or a dating engine to figure out who you are most compatible with.</p>

<p>Researchers at Intel Labs believe people might eventually share almost everything they are doing&#8211;as long as it’s within a very small group. At a sort of science fair for reporters in New York Wednesday, Intel showed off what has been going on at Intel Labs, the research arm of Intel (INTC). Among the most interesting developments: &#8220;socially enabled services&#8221;&#8211;ways that people can use their mobile devices to interact with others on a near-constant basis.</p>
<p>A few years ago, even sharing your location with others was a foreign concept. But Intel Labs researchers are working on systems that would use sensors in handheld devices to share information on where users are and what they are doing at any given time. The sensors can tell whether people are walking or driving, for example, and can use that information to update a person’s status.</p>

<p>Last week, BoomTown had a very dulcet tea-fueled meeting with Josh Williams, the affable CEO and co-founder of Gowalla, one of the leading location-based mobile status-updating start-ups that seem to have sprouted up everywhere.</p>
<p>And while a lot of hyperactive blogging is being done in this still very nascent arena about how an all-out geolocation war is going on, it&#8217;s mostly just the smoke from overfunding going on in the hopes of finding the next Facebook-Twitter nexus.</p>
<p>Indeed, Austin, Texas-based Gowalla has raised over $10 million from such high-profile investors as Ron Conway, as well as from top-notch Silicon Valley venture firms, while its main rival, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100318/foursquares-next-move-a-big-funding-round">Foursquare</a>, is now deciding which VC pocket it will pick at what insane valuation.</p>
<p>Both are attracting a lot of attention and consumers interested in the fad and eager to try out their innovative services.</p>
<p>Still, even if it all comes to naught financially, the combination of mobile, location, status and social networking is actually intriguing to both investors and, for now, consumers&#8211;even if Gowalla ends up getting bought by a larger fish such as Facebook someday soon.</p>
<p>As to business plans? Everything from loyalty plans to advertising to couponing is mentioned, but let&#8217;s be honest: None of these start-ups has any real idea of what will stick.</p>
<p>Until they figure it out, here&#8217;s a video interview I did with Williams, who talks about the competition, the differences among the various services, where it&#8217;s all headed (and how the Gowalla name was, <em>yes</em>, made up):</p>

<p>Google, via a page dedicated to <a href="http://www.google.com/prc/report.html#hl=en">&#8220;Mainland China service availability,&#8221;</a> reports that mobile services are &#8220;partially blocked&#8221; (see image below; click to enlarge). As the <a href="http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/technology/2010/03/google-says-mobile-services-partly-blocked-in-china.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&amp;utm_medium=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheTechnologyBlog+%28Los+Angeles+Times+Technology+Blog%29">Los Angeles Times</a> notes, this is the first time Google (GOOG) has changed the status of any of its services since it posted the page a week ago.</p>
<p>Taken at face value, the update means that China has moved beyond threats and selective search-query blocks and is now disrupting a key part of Google&#8217;s remaining business in that country. Which is pretty much what it has been promising to do over the past few weeks in response to Google&#8217;s decision to close down its Chinese search engine.</p>

<p>Today, Microsoft&#8217;s search engine-that-could, Bing, will begin rolling out another significant upgrade to the user interface seen by consumers.</p>
<p>The software giant also <a href="http://www.bing.com/community/blogs/search/archive/2010/03/24/new-stuff-coming-from-bing-this-spring.aspx">announced on its Bing blog</a> and at an industry conference that it would integrate status data from hot geolocation start-up Foursquare into its Bing maps as an app.</p>
<p>Bing has already been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091021/exclusive-guess-who-else-is-coming-to-dinner-twitter-microsoft-bing-deal-confirmed-but-so-is-facebook-bing">weaving updates from a variety of social networking sites</a>, such as Twitter and Facebook, into its services.</p>
<p>The New York-based Foursquare, a location-based social networking site that has been growing quickly recently, lets its users &#8220;check in&#8221; from a variety of locations. In Bing, it will be accessible via &#8220;Map Apps.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wrote Bing&#8217;s Todd Schwartz on the service&#8217;s blog in a post titled, &#8220;New Stuff Coming From Bing This Spring&#8221;:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The foursquare map app is a powerful combination of the spatial canvas that Bing Maps provides, combined with foursquare&#8217;s user reputation service ability to see who has unlocked specific badges, where and who has been crowned mayor of certain locations making it easier to explore any city in the world as if you were a local. Let&#8217;s say you&#8217;re travelling to New York City for the week, but you don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s hot in Greenwich Village. Selecting the foursquare Map App in Bing Maps, and zooming into to Greenwich Village will get you tips that show you what locals are saying about the hot spots in that area. It&#8217;s like an interactive day planner, designed to help find the best things to do in that area. And if you have questions, you can always contact users through foursquare to get the inside scoop.</p></blockquote>

<p>More interesting, though, is the continuing drive to innovate Bing.</p>
<p>Starting today, pages served up by Bing&#8211;which you can see below compared with the old ones&#8211;will be more focused, with a range of new navigational elements meant to gauge search &#8220;intent&#8221; better.</p>
<p>This means relocating its &#8220;Quick Tabs&#8221; functionality to the top of searches from the side, for example, as well as a more defined &#8220;Bing Box,&#8221; which pulls information together better.</p>
<p>The goal, said Bing Director Stefan Weitz: To differentiate as much as possible from dominant search rival Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>&#8220;Google and Bing are diverging more than ever,&#8221; he said in an interview yesterday with BoomTown. &#8220;Google is focusing on gathering all the world&#8217;s information and we are focused on delivering knowledge based on a user&#8217;s intent.&#8221;</p>
<p>While it sounds a little like goobledygook, it&#8217;s probably a good competitive strategy for Microsoft (MSFT) to avoid competing directly with Google in search.</p>
<p>And so far, it seems to have worked, with Bing&#8217;s share growing slowly but surely over the year since its launch, mostly at the expense of Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Weitz calls the new look on the pages&#8211;which will start with a focus on celebrity, auto and travel searches and reach about five percent of U.S. users initially&#8211;&#8220;not a radical departure, but an evolution.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, indeed, new page results from searches for Lady Gaga and Miami Beach, for example, look only slightly different, with added navigational tabs on top and a more task-oriented feel.</p>
<p>In contrast, though, a search for Ford Mustang is dramatically different, with a more visual feel that is almost like a really informative brochure.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Good news for iPad peripheral peddlers: High demand for some Apple-designed accessories for the device appears to have <a href="http://www.9to5mac.com/node/15019">exhausted early supplies</a>. Originally offered with a ship date of April 3, official iPad cases purchased today, for example, <a href="http://www.electronista.com/articles/10/03/16/most.ipad.accessories.miss.april.3.launch/">won’t ship until mid-April</a> (if you purchased one on March 12, you’re still likely to take delivery on April 3 according to my order status checks). </p>
<p>Keyboard docks ordered today <a href="http://www.9to5mac.com/ipad-dock-keyboard-ships-april-35644634">won’t ship until late April</a> (those ordered on April 12 are scheduled to arrive on April 19). And 10W USB power adapters, which let you charge your iPad via electrical outlet, won’t ship until May&#8211;nearly a month after the arrival of the iPad itself.</p>
<p>A case of first-come, first-served, I suppose. Still, this gives third-party accessory vendors a nice little sales window free of competition from Apple (AAPL)&#8211;assuming they’re ready to take advantage of it.</p>
