<p>In an event ahead of the G8 summit this week, France&#8217;s power brokers are hosting a new event&#8211;called <a href="http://www.eg8forum.com/programme_EN.html">e-G8</a> and with the motto, &#8220;Internet: Accelerating Growth&#8221;&#8211;that starts tomorrow in Paris.</p>
<p>Set to be held at the Tuileries Garden in the capital, the conference has been pushed and will be opened by French President Nicholas Sarkozy, who is also president of the G8.</p>
<p>Recently, Sarkozy has advocated the idea of a &#8220;civilized Internet&#8221;&#8211;a decidedly tin-eared concept, since the e-G8 event is chock full of often noisy and always disruption-loving U.S. Web stars.</p>
<p>That includes Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, the social networking site&#8217;s COO Sheryl Sandberg, eBay CEO John Donahoe, Groupon CEO and co-founder Andrew Mason, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt and Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor Sean Parker.</p>
<p>In fact, Mason and Zuckerberg have the two big keynote spots for the two-day event, putting the American point of view on the Internet&#8217;s future on front and center. </p>
<p>In other words: <em>Plus ça change, plus c&#8217;est la même chose!</em></p>

<p>BoomTown scrambled the <strong>All Things Digital</strong> jet (aka, United Airlines, Seat 7A) late last night to get up to Microsoft&#8217;s big event for its online advertising clients today.</p>
<p>Called &#8220;Imagine 2011: Marketing Leadership Summit&#8221; and held at its Redmond, Wa. HQ, the two-day gathering is designed to wow peeps by trotting out a spate of <em>strategery</em> concepts those who buy advertising on Microsoft&#8217;s various digital offerings from its Bing search service to MSN to Xbox to Windows Phone 7.</p>
<p>Some program topics: &#8220;Elsewhere USA,&#8221; &#8220;Teens Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out&#8221; and &#8220;Audience Buying Goes Real-Time: True or False?&#8221;</p>
<p>Presumably the goal of all this heavy-duty thinkery is to get these marketers to buy more ads from Microsoft by warning them about being left behind on the platform as the train chugs inevitably off to the digital future.</p>
<p>And just in case that doesn&#8217;t work, there will be a free concert tonight featuring the hipster band Train for the Imagine 2011 attendees at Microsoft Co-founder Paul Allen&#8217;s Experience Music Project venue to open those ad wallets.</p>
<p>Hey, Geek Mister: Stop sending all those digital marketing bucks to Google and Facebook and give them to us!</p>

<p>Before a panoply of various social, design and anthropology experts pontificated, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer kicked off the day with his patented loud and lovable Ed McMahon act, complete with the booming catchphrases.</p>
<p><em>Hey-Yo!</em></p>
<p>&#8220;You have to move forward or die!&#8221; (About the Web.)</p>
<p>&#8220;If you wanna get big, you have to think big!&#8221; (About the Windows 7 Phone smartphone deal with Nokia.)</p>
<p>I love the U.S. government, I don&#8217;t want to give it a hard time.&#8221; (About its crappy Web site, not the antitrust conviction thing.)</p>
<p>Ballmer outlined some key trends, which are not new to anyone paying attention over the last five years: Location; social; pervasive displays; ubiquitous connectivity; computers everywhere; cloud; data; and natural user interaction</p>
<p>He also joked about how there were 10 fake Steve Ballmers on Facebook, all using Steve Ballmer photos. <em>Imagine that!</em></p>
<p>You&#8217;d think Microsoft&#8217;s badillion-dollar investment in the social networking site would get you a verified account!</p>

<p>Status: <em>Monkey boy mad!</em></p>
<p>Actually, pissed off is more related to the fact that the person who conceived and organized the Imagine 2011 event was former global ad sales head Carolyn Everson.</p>
<p>But, she <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson">left the company</a> in mid-February after only six months, for essentially the same job at Microsoft partner Facebook.</p>
<p>Since then Microsoft and Facebook have been wrangling over the talent raid, including Microsoft even considering <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110302/exclusive-microsoft-mulls-legally-poking-facebook-over-ad-talent-raid/">legal action to block the move</a>.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the show must go on and it did in a pretty classy way.</p>
<p>But not without another road bump in today&#8217;s action&#8211;the news that Microsoft&#8217;s own marketing head, longtime company veteran <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/awkward-as-microsoft-marketing-event-opens-its-longtime-marketing-head-announces-retirement/">Mich Mathews</a>, was leaving the software giant later this year.</p>
<p>The departure had the halls buzzing about what happened and who will be taking over the big job with a $1 billion marketing budget.</p>
<p>Maybe some external CMO sitting right there in the audience or perhaps some internal Microsoft candidate such as Yusuf Mehdi or Capossela?</p>
<p>I suppose it&#8217;s time for some strategery <em>stat</em>!</p>

<p>Timing is everything and, sometimes, very awkward.</p>
<p>Today at its Redmond, Wash., campus, Microsoft is hosting a splashy online &#8220;marketing leadership summit&#8221; titled &#8220;Imagine 2011&#8243;&#8211;a gathering of top marketing execs from across the globe, most of whom are advertising clients of its online division.</p>
<p>Also today: Its longtime head of global marketing, Mich Mathews, announced her departure&#8211;to the surprise of many Microsoft execs here, in fact&#8211;via a <a href="http://adage.com/article/digital/microsoft-top-marketer-mich-mathews-exit/149638/">report in Ad Age</a>.</p>
<p>In the article, she said she had told execs at Microsoft just last night.</p>
<p>Mathews, who is probably Microsoft&#8217;s top woman executive, has been at the software giant for a dog&#8217;s age&#8211;22 years. (BoomTown met the sharp-witted and often pointed exec in the early 1990s, when she was in charge of the PR operations for the company.)</p>
<p>As SVP of Microsoft&#8217;s Central Marketing Group, Mathews oversees a $1 billion budget for Microsoft products such as Windows, Xbox , Window Phone 7 and its Bing search service.</p>
<p>While Microsoft will be conducting a global search for a replacement, several sources said the most obvious internal candidate for the job is Yusuf Mehdi, who is SVP for its Online Audience Business.</p>
<p>He leads global product management, strategic partnerships, business development and U.S. marketing execution for the unit.</p>
<p>Another strong internal possibility: Chris Capossela, who just left his job as SVP of the Microsoft Business division for unspecified duties around social initiatives. He had a similar job to Mehdi&#8217;s, with key marketing duties.</p>
<p>Attendees at the Imagine event were buzzing about the Mathews news, taking some focus off the program, which included an opening speech by CEO Steve Ballmer.</p>
<p>Ballmer did not mention Mathews onstage, which was a by-the-book overview of its online ad offerings.</p>
<p>Another sticky situation for Microsoft: The Imagine event was organized by another top woman exec at Microsoft, global ad sales head Carolyn Everson.</p>
<p>But, she <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson">left the company</a> in mid-February after only six months, for essentially the same job at Microsoft partner Facebook.</p>

<p>Microsoft&#8211;furious over a recent talent grab of its top advertising exec by Facebook&#8211;has been considering a wide range of options, including legal action to block the move, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Lawyer at both companies have been in back-and-forth talks in recent days after the hiring of Microsoft&#8217;s global ad sales head Carolyn Everson by the Silicon Valley social networking powerhouse to be its VP of global sales.</p>
<p>Among the more likely solutions being discussed: Barring Everson&#8211;a longtime ad sales exec who came to Microsoft from MTV Networks&#8211;from using any strategic information she learned at the company and also from contacting certain ad clients on behalf of Facebook for a certain period of time.</p>
<p>While a legal action to stop her from actually taking the position is the most serious option, it is certainly not without precedent for Microsoft. The company recently <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110223/judge-says-former-microsoft-exec-cant-work-for-salesforce-for-now/">got a temporary restraining order</a> to block one of its top government relations execs, Matt Miszewski, from working at Salesforce.com, pointing to non-compete and confidentiality contracts.</p>
<p>Whatever happens, it is clear the Everson hiring has infuriated Microsoft execs, especially CEO Steve Ballmer, since the company regards Facebook as a close partner. Microsoft is also a longtime investor in Facebook.</p>
<p>While considering a temporary restraining order against Everson in this kind of situation&#8211;since it is essentially the same job&#8211;is standard operating procedure for any company, several sources said tensions are higher than usual.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is just tone deaf on Facebook&#8217;s part not to think this would not be a problem,&#8221; said one person.</p>
<p>One particularly irksome aspect&#8211;top Facebook execs did not call Ballmer before news of the appointment leaked out to assuage the situation.</p>
<p>Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg did release a statement when <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson">BoomTown broke news of the move</a> in mid-February, in an attempt to make nice.</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft was one of our earliest partners and is still one of our most valued,&#8221; she said, in part. &#8220;We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with them.&#8221;</p>
<p>Her dulcet words have apparently not worked.</p>

<p>In fact, the talent raid came as a surprise to many at Microsoft, especially since Everson (pictured here) had been hired in June after a long search and had become a high-profile presence at internal and external Microsoft events.</p>
<p>That included organizing the splashy &#8220;Imagine 2011, Microsoft Advertising&#8217;s Marketing Leadership Summit.&#8221; The event is set to take place at the end of March at the software giant&#8217;s Redmond, Wa. HQ and will include an evening concert by the band Train.</p>
<p>Now she will be doing such things for Facebook, where Everson will be replacing longtime and well-regarded ad exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101026/exclusive-facebooks-longtime-ad-sales-head-mike-murphy-to-depart-company/">Mike Murphy</a>, who left the Palo Alto, Calif., company last fall. She will report to former Googler David Fischer, VP of Advertising and Global Operations.</p>
<p>Having a top exec who is amenable to and well known by Madison Avenue is key for Facebook as it ramps up its business, in anticipation of an IPO next year.</p>
<p>Despite being private, Facebook has recently been valued at between $50 and $60 billion by investors, who have been eagerly buying up shares of the company on secondary markets.</p>
<p>Under Murphy and Fischer, ad sales have been doing well already. Facebook&#8217;s share of online display advertising has more than quadrupled, from about three percent to almost 14 percent of the nearly $9 billion U.S. market, according to a recent survey.</p>
<p>In growing so quickly, Facebook has grabbed ad revenue&#8211;reportedly $2 billion last year–from old online powerhouses, especially Yahoo, Microsoft and AOL, and is also in a big fight with Google over premium ad sales.</p>
<p>Facebook&#8217;s surging usage and engagement are the reasons for the increased interest from advertisers, as well as its global growth in both market share and mindshare of consumers.</p>
<p>The opportunity at Facebook is clearly a big&#8211;and probably irresistible&#8211;move for the dynamic Everson, who has mostly worked in the mainstream media for much of her career.</p>
<p>Still, while movement of execs among top tech companies is not uncommon, there has been a lot less from Microsoft to Facebook.</p>
<p>Instead, Facebook has been most aggressive in its efforts to attract talent from Google.</p>

<p>No longer. In fact, the week before Facebook grabbed Everson, it also hired an up-and-coming exec, <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/chris-daniels/0/a2/17a">Chris Daniels</a>, GM of Bing Mobile Product Management, to be its director of business development.</p>
<p>Still, there is some hiring war history between the companies. In late 2008, Microsoft&#8217;s Ballmer managed to <a href="https://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/microsoft-confirms-qi-lu-hired-as-digital-chief-mcandrews-out">lure former Yahoo exec Qi Lu</a> to run its Online Services Division, several sources at both companies said, after he had told Facebook he would work there as its engineering lead. Lu had also been heavily recruited by Google.</p>
<p>Eventually, that was water under the bridge, which is what Facebook is hoping will happen with Microsoft over Everson.</p>
<p>Also important in the weighing of options at Microsoft is the obvious importance of keeping up good relations with Facebook. It is an important partnership, especially for its Bing search business, as an advantage over Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;Everyone is hoping to resolve this amicably,&#8221; said one person close to the situation. &#8220;There has been some damage to the relationship for sure, but the question is whether Microsoft wants to do something that would escalate that damage.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not surprisingly, both Facebook and Microsoft declined to comment on the fracas.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2473" title="240px-Mcgonigal_jane_8485_(1)" src="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/240px-Mcgonigal_jane_8485_1-150x135.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="135" />Coinciding with the release of her book <a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/1594202850/ref=cm_sw_su_dp">&#8220;Reality Is Broken: Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World&#8221;</a> is McGonigal&#8217;s keynote tomorrow at the <a href="http://www.amiando.com/gamificationsummit.html">Gamification Summit</a> in San Francisco, and I&#8217;ll be interviewing her onstage afterward.</p>
<p>While there&#8217;s been much industry discussion of gamification, it&#8217;s often about adding lightweight gaming elements to all sorts of things to entice people to participate. McGonigal, it seems, is talking about something different: Using the motivation, focus and creativity of massively multiplayer online gamers to solve real-world problems.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m interested to hear her apply her ideas to social games, the stripped-down mindless diversions like Zynga&#8217;s CityVille that are <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101224/in-less-than-one-month-cityville-beats-farmville-to-become-zyngas-biggest-game/?mod=ATD_rss">growing so fast</a> and <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101222/help-im-addicted-to-cityville/">addictive to so many</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Sundar Pichai, the man in charge of Chrome and Chrome OS at Google, is being aggressively courted by Twitter to be its next head of product, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.</p>

<p>However, added sources, Google is fighting hard to counter the Twitter offer, so Pichai could easily stay with his current employer. At Google, which he joined in April 2004, Pichai is a VP of Product Management.</p>
<p>If successful, the hiring of Pichai would be a major raid for Twitter, and mark its place next to Facebook as an up-and-comer in the race to entice away top Google executives.</p>
<p>More importantly, Twitter could use the product help.</p>
<p>The San Francisco microblogging company, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101215/exclusive-twitter-raises-200-million-at-3-7-billion-valuation-adds-mccue-and-rosenblatt-to-board/">just raised a massive funding</a>, has done relatively little product development recently, in large part because its focus has been absorbed by overwhelming growth and infrastructure problems.</p>
<p>Pichai certainly fits the bill as a head of product for Twitter, given his job at Google. The well-regarded tech exec heads the Silicon Valley search giant&#8217;s high-profile Chrome browser and Chrome OS efforts.</p>
<p>Pichai was front and center at an <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091119/a-first-look-at-googles-chrome-os-on-thursday">unveiling of Chrome OS plans</a> in November, and touted the Chrome browser&#8217;s 40 million users only a year after its debut in 2009.</p>
<p>But not everyone is so sanguine. Paul Buchheit, founder of Gmail (and FriendFeed) predicted a very short life for Google’s still-in-beta Chrome OS, noting&#8211;<a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101214/gmail-founder-says-chrome-is-doome/?mod=ATD_search">on Twitter</a> in December&#8211;that he thought the product would be axed or fused with Android in 2011.</p>
<p>As Mobilized&#8217;s Ina Fried wrote at the time:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Google originally hoped to have Chrome OS-based computers for sale this year, but has run into some delays. Last week, the company released a beta version of the software and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101207/google-shows-off-chrome-web-store/">distributed to testers an unbranded laptop</a> running the operating system. However, it&#8217;s worth noting that in doing so, Google has hardly made the strongest hardware case for the operating system, using a relatively bulky netbook with a reliable, but hardly power-sipping Intel Atom processor.</p>
<p>The idea of merging the two operating systems has some merit. Doing so would pair a top-notch browser with an ecosystem that already has a lot of applications and developers.</p>
<p>For now, the operating systems are distinct, with Android running hundreds of thousands of applications and used largely on phones, along with a few tablets, such as Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy Tab. However, Google VP Andy Rubin confirmed after his <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101206/googles-andy-rubin-dives-into-android/">appearance at last week&#8217;s <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong></a> that the company is working on a new version of Android, known as Honeycomb, that is <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101207/backstage-at-d-mobile-googles-andy-rubin-/?mod=ATD_search">geared exclusively to tablets</a>. <p>Acer and a couple of other hardware makers have<a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101129/acer-ceo-on-why-hes-waiting-on-android-tablets/"> said they plan to do Chrome OS netbooks</a> next year once the software is ready.</p></blockquote>
<p>If hired, Pichai would fill an open spot left by the departure of longtime Twitter VP of Product Jason Goldman, who <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101209/help-wanted-twitter-seeks-product-direction/">stepped down</a> at the beginning of December.</p>
<p>The attempt to bring on Pichai to lead product brings into question former CEO Evan Williams&#8217;s role at the company. When he <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101004/breaking-twitter-replaces-ceo-ev-williams-with-deputy-dick-costolo/">stepped down as CEO</a>, Williams said it was in order to focus on product strategy, and when Goldman gave up his position, many assumed Williams was the natural substitute.</p>

<p>While Pichai would be a strong choice for the job, he has not been an active user of the product.</p>
<p>Until recently, that is.</p>
<p><a href="http://twitter.com/#!/sundarpichai">Pichai&#8217;s own Twitter account</a> has a grand total of 118 tweets, with about a third of them posted in the last month.</p>
<p>Yesterday, in an <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110107/live-twitter-ceo-dick-costolo-at-dces/">interview with BoomTown&#8217;s Kara Swisher at <strong>D@CES</strong></a>, Twitter CEO Dick Costolo said some product goals for Twitter included a better experience for passive users and a more &#8220;agnostic&#8221; experience across platforms.</p>
<p>Costolo also mentioned a new zero tolerance policy for infrastructure problems, and said that Twitter does not consider itself a &#8220;platform company,&#8221; but rather one that has APIs.</p>
<p>The Google-Twitter connection is strong, and not just on the we-want-to-buy-you front&#8211;Google has often cast its acquisitive eyes at Twitter and still does.</p>
<p>And many Twitter employees were formerly Googlers, although not all in the same era or area.</p>
<p>Costolo himself came to Twitter after being at Google, which had acquired his last start-up, FeedBurner.</p>
<p>Other former Googlers include many on Twitter&#8217;s product team, such as Othman Laraki and Elad Gil, who were product managers at Google Mobile Maps and Google Toolbar before joining Twitter through its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091223/twitter-now-one-acquisition-closer-to-improved-stalking/">acquisition of their geo start-up Mixer Labs</a>.</p>
<p>In addition, last year, Twitter <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090712/a-google-lawyer-waves-goodbye-lands-at-twitter/">nabbed</a> Google lawyer Alexander Macgillivray as its general counsel.</p>
<p>And, of course, Twitter co-founders Williams and Biz Stone had worked at Google after it bought Blogger. They created Twitter after they left the company.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s possible that Pichai leaving Google might have something to do with the company favoring the Android mobile operating system over Chrome OS, but seems more likely that the Twitter role would just be a compelling opportunity for him.</p>
<p>Twitter declined comment, and Google has not responded to an inquiry about Pichai.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Although it was hard to see with <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101215/microsoft-shares-its-new-years-resolutions-for-bing/">all the demo glitches at the Bing Summit</a> on Wednesday, Microsoft actually has a bunch of interesting updates coming to its iPhone app.</p>
<p>One feature, in particular, caught my eye. It&#8217;s the ability to take panoramic pictures just by waving the phone (and its built-in camera) around a bit. The result is a multidimensional <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20080820/microsoft-live-labs-creates-web-synth-for-3-d-photo-tour/">Photosynth</a>. People will be able to create panoramas for their own use or to share with friends, but Microsoft is also hoping that people will share them publicly and that some of them can be used to expand Bing Maps&#8217; close-up capabilities. </p>

<p>Microsoft is also updating the Bing app with improved street-level photography options when using maps on the phone. Another new feature will allow the app to use the camera to capture and then read text, using any of the words it recognizes as the basis for a query. Also interesting is the ability to set the app to take action&#8211;such as check-in to a location-based service&#8211;when you reach a specified location.</p>
<p>Since the demos didn&#8217;t work so well for reporters on Wednesday, I offered Microsoft&#8217;s Blaise Agueras y Arcas a do-over and he was kind enough to give a demo for Mobilized and answer a few questions (see video below).</p>
<p>Although Microsoft didn&#8217;t outline it at the search event, the company is <a href="http://www.bing.com/community/site_blogs/b/search/archive/2010/12/14/bing-for-mobile-updates-launch-today.aspx">also making a series of updates to its Android app</a>.</p>
<p>One side effect of the coming updates (which Agueras y Arcas said is coming very soon) is that it will actually further the gap between the iPhone and Windows Phone 7. That&#8217;s because Bing is not an app on Windows Phone 7, but an integrated part of the operating system. That means that the new Bing features won&#8217;t show up until the next OS update, at the earliest.</p>
<p>Microsoft, though, can ill-afford to cede the iPhone search market to Google. The Bing app, it notes, has been downloaded 5.5 million times, while the company has also finally managed to make Bing a search option in the browser.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s an issue that is likely to crop up repeatedly for Microsoft, unless it does something like create a separate Bing app for Windows Phone in addition to the built-in search capabilities, something that Microsoft officials held out as a possibility, though nothing is in the works at the moment.</p>

<p>According to sources, Jeff Dossett has taken a job at Demand Media as its SVP of Content Partnership Development.</p>
<p>That means Dossett, who has held top online jobs at both Yahoo and Microsoft, will be focused on content distribution partnerships for the online content company&#8217;s Demand Media Studio platform.</p>
<p>The Santa Monica, Calif.-based Demand, which sources said is now prepping its road show for its<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100806/heres-the-big-ipo-youve-been-waiting-for-demand-media-files-with-the-sec"> upcoming IPO</a>, has been picking up big company execs to add to its roster.</p>
<p>In March, it hired Yahoo U.S. advertising sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media">Joanne Bradford</a>, who worked with Dossett at Microsoft.</p>
<p>When BoomTown last checked in with Dossett in mid-2009, he was <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/yahoo-audience-head-jeff-dossett-expected-to-depart-company">leaving Yahoo</a> for an adventure-focused start-up.</p>
<p>As its SVP for North American Audience, Dossett had been in charge of all of Yahoo&#8217;s media assets, including its powerful News, Sports and Finance content sites.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081103/as-boomtown-said-microsofts-jeff-dossett-joins-yahoo/">Dossett  had joined Yahoo in late 2008</a>, coming to the company from Microsoft, where he was MSN executive producer and general manager.</p>
<p>In his job at MSN, Dossett was the lead for audience, content and programming strategy and execution in the U.S.</p>
<p>He had worked at the company since 1991, in a variety of sales and marketing jobs in Canada, and later worked on strategy and business development for MSN.</p>
<p>Dossett was also CEO of Carpoint, now MSN Autos, and was GM of its real-estate arm.</p>
<p>He also took two years off from Microsoft in 2002 to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, finally reaching the summit of Mount Everest in May of 2004.</p>
<p>Dossett reached the summit of Everest for a second time in 2008.</p>

<b>Questioner: </b>With platforms like the Google phone and iPhone coming out, it’s really tough to continue to stand behind Windows Mobile when our employees are bringing these consumer devices into our environments,” the questioner explained. And in your presentation you put Windows Mobile right in the center there, but it was a phone that doesn’t work in America and an operating system that you haven’t released. I’m wondering what your commitment is to continuing to get newer versions of the operating system in our hands so that we don’t have to fight this battle on the ground.”<br />
<b><br />
Steve Ballmer: </b>We have a significant release coming this year. Not the full release we wanted to have this year but we have a significant release coming this year with Windows Mobile 6.5….We still don’t get some of the things that people want on the highest-end phones. Those will come on Windows Mobile 7 next year. Certainly I’m not, um–there’s opportunities for us to accelerate our execution in this area, and we’ve done a lot of work to really make sure we have a team that’s going to be able to accelerate. With that said, we did sell more Windows Mobile devices last year than Apple did iPhones–just an important factoid to have. Blackberry was a little bit ahead, and Google was nowhere to be seen, except in Silicon Valley, I’m sure. But we’ll do our best to help you with that challenge.” </blockquote class="memo" style="background:#faf5e5;font-style:normal;">
<p>But Microsoft&#8217;s &#8220;best&#8221; at that point wasn&#8217;t nearly enough.</p>
<p>Intended as a stopgap, Windows Mobile 6.5 ended up being another damning monument to Microsoft&#8217;s failure to innovate in mobile and the ugly strategic misstep that made it an afterthought in a market that had already lapped it once and was well on its way to lapping it a second time. Just last week Verizon (VZ) President and COO Lowell McAdam dismissed Microsoft as a player in the mobile market. &#8220;We like our relationship with Microsoft,&#8221; he told News.com. &#8220;But clearly in the U.S. there are three major mobile operating systems: RIM, Google, and Apple&#8230;.Microsoft is not at the forefront of our mind.&#8221;</p>
<p>If Windows Phone 7 doesn&#8217;t put it there, Microsoft (MSFT) might as well hand its fast-diminishing portion of the smartphone market to Apple (AAPL), Google (GOOG) and RIM (RIMM), because they&#8217;ll take it soon enough. </p>
<p>But that&#8217;s not likely to happen. Because from what I&#8217;ve seen, Windows Phone 7 is as slick an OS as has ever come out of Microsoft&#8211;easily enough to keep the company in the mobile game, assuming it hasn&#8217;t lost it already.</p>
<p>For one thing, WP7 is not simply a rejiggering of Windows Mobile 6.5, it&#8217;s an entirely new OS. For another, its interface is unique enough to differentiate it in an already crowded market. It&#8217;s smart, too&#8211;perhaps even smart enough to give it a leg up on some rivals. Its hubs and tiles GUI, which aggregates  applications and content according to subject and delivers real-time information to the home screen without the need for user involvement, is elegant and intuitive. </p>
<p>Add to this a media experience basically identical to Zune HD, very smart social media management, seamless Xbox live and SharePoint/Office integration and high minimum hardware requirements for OEMs and you&#8217;ve got a pretty compelling OS&#8211;even if it doesn&#8217;t yet support cut-and-paste and true multitasking (the company tells me those are coming). The challenge for Microsoft will be to convince a market that saw Windows Mobile made a laughing stock by iOS, Android and webOS, that Windows Phone 7 isn&#8217;t just more of the same.</p>
<p>That shouldn&#8217;t be too hard given the nearly half-billion dollars in marketing the company is rumored to be throwing at it (<em>check out one of the first ads below</em>) and the quality of the OS itself.</p>

<p>Indeed, from Facebook to Google (GOOG) to Apple (AAPL) to Twitter and more, it is cheek to jowl these days trying to control the consumer experience.</p>

<p>Yesterday, Microsoft Online Service SVP Satya Nadella&#8211;also known as the search-dude-in-chief&#8211;presided over the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100713/liveblogging-microsoft-bings-search-summit-2010-there-will-be-donuts-also-cream-puffs/">Search Summit</a>, to update the media on the progress of the Bing service.</p>
<p>Since it launched Bing a year ago, the software giant has been aggressively&#8211;and with some interesting innovations&#8211;trying to make a dent in the market dominance of Google (GOOG), which has a share of upwards of 70 percent.</p>
<p>Bing has just broken into the double digits, which is impressive, but it&#8217;s still fighting an uphill battle. It&#8217;s essentially the little search engine that could.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a video interview I did with Nadella at the Microsoft office in San Francisco, where we talk about a lot of stuff, including Bing&#8217;s progress over the last year and when it might make some money.</p>
<p>I also added my interview with him from right after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090804/microsofts-point-man-on-search-satya-nadella-speaks-its-a-game-of-scale/">Microsoft struck its search partnership deal with Yahoo</a> (YHOO) last August, just below it.</p>

<p>After BoomTown complained at <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/liveblogging-bing-new-features-demo-no-donuts/">December&#8217;s search summit</a> held by Bing about the lack of the finest pastry known to man&#8211;namely, <em>donuts</em>!&#8211;minions were dispatched by top Microsoft geek general Satya Nadella to fix the dire situation.</p>
<p>And, happily, at Search Summit 2010, there on the lovely snack table were a small pile of them&#8211;which looked like Krispy Kreme to me.</p>
<p>There were lacking the key sprinkles feature, but carb crisis averted!</p>
<p>Speaking of features, top Bing execs were on hand in San Francisco to show off all the work they have been doing over the last year in the software giant&#8217;s efforts to topple mean old Google (GOOG) via an innovative offering.</p>
<p>Even the plain-speaking Nadella acknowledged in his opening it was still a bit of a children&#8217;s crusade, since Bing had barely broken into double digits in search market share and Google was hovering around 70 percent.</p>
<p>But the most <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100713/search-share-still-tricky-to-grok-but-googles-down-while-yahoo-and-bing-show-some-legs/">recent report released this week by comScore</a> (SCOR) showed continued promise, so Microsoft (MSFT) presses on its long and pricey road!</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my liveblog of this morning&#8217;s event at the software giant&#8217;s San Francisco office:</p>
<p><strong>10 am PT:</strong> Nadella opened with the donuts news. Nice move.</p>
<p>Then, it was onto some promising stats of growth, which have surely been promising, despite the high price tag (Microsoft&#8217;s online division lost $700 million in the last quarter, to give you an idea of the sticker shock).</p>
<p>Still, as search exec Brian MacDonald said, as he was presenting all the many new features&#8211;such as cards&#8211;added over the last year: &#8220;We&#8217;re in it to win it.&#8221;</p>
<p>At the end of his presentation, in a slide title &#8220;Future,&#8221; he said reporters could not take pictures or video. Sure, hop us up on sugar and then tell us something interesting and bar us from taking snaps!</p>
<p>But MacDonald clicked through the images so fast, it was hard to tell what Bing would be up to. Essentially, it looks like a more blocky, image-heavy design, with more differing fonts and contextual info.</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am PT:</strong> A smart search geek Harry Shum was then on with a lecture about search intent and all kinds of insider tweakery that made me confused, since I do not understand terms such as &#8220;page-level dialog.&#8221; There is also apparently &#8220;session-level dialog.&#8221;</p>
<p>Harry knows what it all means, which is pretty much all that counts.</p>

<p>My take: It has to do with some sort of digital conversation Bing search dudes are having with the users that users have no idea is actually going on.</p>
<p>Simply put: They&#8217;re <em>watching</em> you.</p>
<p><strong>11 am PT:</strong> Next search guy talked about search intent and such.</p>
<p>That means adding features such as a link to search history or instant weather on the opening page. It&#8217;s the little touches that count.</p>
<p>In fact, they do, as Bing tries to differentiate itself from what Google offers, via a series of neat tricks and clever design.</p>
<p>That includes, for example, easy access to lyrics and song classifiers, when searching in music.</p>
<p>Lady Gaga&#8217;s &#8220;Poker Face&#8221; was used as an example, since Lady Gaga seems to be the go-to gal on seeming cool these days.</p>
<p>(But is it time to check Bing search trends to see if she is peaked?)</p>
<p><strong>11:19 am:</strong> Next, top Online Services Division exec Erik Jorgensen came on to discuss mobile and mapping. He compared himself with &#8220;Edward Scissorhands&#8221; when talking about how hard it is to have a good experience on a small device.</p>
<p>&#8220;Type less, do more,&#8221; is the internal mantra at Bing, he said. Coincidentally, my mantra is type more, do <em>less</em>.</p>
<p>Jorgensen showed off Bing mobile stats: 23 million users, 160 percent growth and four million downloads of its iPhone app. Yes, it has come to this&#8211;Microsoft using Apple (AAPL) to tout its success.</p>
<p>Then it was onto mapping, which is a pretty good arena for Bing. Stats: 41 percent growth in U.S. unique users, 43 percent rise in searches using enhanced maps, a huge boost in map apps.</p>
<p><strong>11:29 am:</strong> Bing Maps guru Blaise Aguera y Arcas&#8211;who has the single most sexy name in all of geekdom&#8211;said the focus is now on social location.</p>
<p>As in Foursquare!</p>
<p>In fact, he showed off a map in which Foursquare check-ins pour in and pop up in a bit of a freaky way, as in: You can stalk in real-time.</p>
<p>Then it was onto cool mapping eye-candy, which I always fall for since the whole zoom-in-zoom-out thing is mesmerizing. Aguera y Arcas showed off clickable geographic names and embedded maps within maps from, in this case, a zoo or a museum.</p>
<p><strong>11:50 am:</strong> Q&#038;A Time!</p>
<p>The first question is about gaming. It&#8217;s hot said Nadella, and Bing wants to provide discovery and search more than games themselves.</p>
<p>I asked a question about the status of the Yahoo (YHOO) search partnership deal, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100701/digitals-deadliest-catch-part-1-the-microhoo-search-integration-teams-nelson-and-morrissey-speak/">which is in process</a>. It is a <em>very</em> complex process, in fact.</p>
<p>And, though they were supposed to be in tandem, Nadella said that algorithm would move faster than advertising technology handover.</p>
<p>&#8220;If there were a drop of of advertisers [due to the new deal], that would be problematic,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>Yes, which segued into the next obvious topic: When would Bing make some dough?</p>
<p>Thus. I asked about the high costs of competing in the search space, which Nadella said would continue, including distribution deals and in the aggressive marketing of Bing.</p>
<p>&#8220;For sure, we had to ante up,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But the product has to be able to stand on its own&#8230;ultimately, the product has to carry the day.&#8221;</p>
<p>More questions about distribution, social search, churn, product differentiation and whether Bing is growing from a more passive user to building a &#8220;fan base.&#8221;</p>
<p>BoomTown brainstorm: If they handed out delicious donuts with each search, I&#8217;d leave Google in a New York minute.</p>
<p>But, like a skunk at a garden party, I asked another question about when Bing is going to break even.</p>
<p>Nadella was too smart to answer this digital hot potato.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a big market where money can we made, and we are making progress,&#8221; he said, saying I should ask his bosses about specifics.</p>
<p>I shall!</p>
<p>In this vein, someone then asked a question about whether Bing would ever become a verb as Google has become.</p>

<p>Shum joked that in the future six letters would be too many for people to say, so things were looking up for four-letter search brands!</p>
<p>More questions included whether Google was tweaked by Bing yet (yep!), and whether Bing should try to win in an international market to show some muscle (U.S. is still top focus).</p>
<p>Finally, it was &#8220;time to deploy the cream puffs,&#8221; said a Microsoft PR honcho.</p>
<p>Long past time, I&#8217;d say.</p>

<p>A longtime and experienced mountain climber, Dossett (pictured here) has been one of the more senior digital execs at Microsoft.</p>
<p>The reason given for Dossett&#8217;s departure from Microsoft (MSFT), announced internally this afternoon, was to &#8220;pursue other opportunities.&#8221;</p>
<p>While the hire is not yet complete, that apparently means that he is likely going to rival and onetime Microsoft quarry Yahoo as a senior exec.</p>
<p>It is an interesting digital-musical-chair trend, in fact. On Monday, another former Microsoft big shot, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080909/yahoo-brings-in-drum-roll-please-a-former-microsoft-exec-to-head-ad-sales/">Joanne Bradford, will start her job as Yahoo&#8217;s top U.S. sales exec</a>.</p>
<p>Bradford came to Yahoo (YHOO) after a very short stint as national sales head at the trendy Los Angeles start-up, Spot Runner.</p>

<p>Previous to that, Bradford (pictured here) had been at Microsoft for many years, most recently as VP and chief media officer of MSN Media Network.</p>
<p>While at Microsoft, Jeff Dossett was a close colleague of Bradford, so his moving to Yahoo would not be that much of a surprise.</p>
<p>But one has to wonder what other Microsoft execs Bradford can entice to come to Yahoo, especially given that CEO Jerry Yang is reportedly interested in aggressively beefing up his executive ranks after more than a year of employee attrition due to all the turmoil at the company.</p>
<p>Current Yahoo Media Group SVP Scott Moore, who has been at Yahoo for several years now, is another former Microsoft digital exec.</p>
<p>What Dossett would do if he takes a job at Yahoo is unclear.</p>
<p>But, in his job at MSN, Dossett was the lead for audience, content and programming strategy and execution in the U.S.</p>
<p>He has worked at the company since 1991, in a variety of sales and marketing jobs in Canada, and later worked on strategy and business development for MSN.</p>
<p>Dossett was also CEO of Carpoint, now MSN Autos, and was GM of its real estate arm.</p>
<p>He also took two years off from Microsoft in 2002 to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven continents, finally reaching the summit of Mount Everest in May of 2004.</p>
<p>Dossett reached the summit of Everest again for a second time this past May.</p>
