Here&#8217;s one way to help pay for a small piece of that deal: Sell off its <a href="http://www.fuel.tv/">Fuel TV</a> cable channel.</p>
<p>(Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly identified the owner of Travel Channel as Discovery.)</p>
<p>Rupert Murdoch and company are mulling a sale of the &#8220;action sports&#8221; cable channel, prompted by inbound requests, industry sources tell me. No comment from News Corp., which also owns this Web site.</p>
<p>If News Corp. (NWS) does part with the channel, it won&#8217;t be a whopper of a deal: Fuel TV, which features skate- and surf-themed programming like <a href="http://www.fuel.tv/TheAdventuresOfDannyAndTheDingo/videos/view/14066">&#8220;The Adventures of Danny and the Dingo&#8221;</a> (I know. Me either.) boasts just 30 million subscribers&#8211;about half of what cable networks need to get taken seriously by operators and advertisers.</p>
<p>Just as telling, perhaps: I&#8217;ve queried three different Wall Street analysts to get a ballpark price for the network, and none had a clue&#8211;and only one had even heard of Fuel.</p>
<p>So here, for everyone&#8217;s edification, is some Fuel TV programming: Danny and the Dingo&#8217;s (who are snowboarding stars, apparently) most recent high jinks.</p>

Consensus seems to be that Apple (AAPL) has ordered 10-inch touchscreens from Wintek&#8211;the Taiwanese outfit that manufactures the smaller screens used in its iPhone and iPod touch&#8211;and that those screens are destined for an entirely new device. Netbook is the word most often bandied about for it, but given its size and function, I wonder if it&#8217;s not more of a tablet. Or e-book reader. There&#8217;s nothing much on which to base this theory, aside from <a href="http://www.theiphoneblog.com/2009/03/03/apple-itablet-kindle-ebook-ecomic-killer/">another rumor that&#8217;s been making the rounds lately</a>, as recounted by Andy Ihnatko of the Chicago Sun-Times.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;There’s something I keep hearing, and I don’t think I’d rank it as high as a rumor, but it’s an interesting story that I keep hearing, that for awhile, trucks loaded with books would arrive at a loading dock on the Apple campus, and offload big, big, big, big, huge loads of books, and then the trucks would leave empty. And Apple does not have a 100,000-book employee library there on the Apple campus. So one is prone to believe that they’re doing something with these books, such as turning them into text for some purpose we can only guess at. There’s been a long-standing rumor that Apple has been silently preparing to open a bookstore on the iTunes store, and they want to make sure that they have a very large stock of electronic titles when they do open.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Interesting, no? Especially in light of these new reports about 10-inch touchscreen devices. Could Apple be developing a new souped up e-book reader&#8211;a TouchBook, if you will? Something on which you could read books (in color), watch movies, surf the Web and create and edit documents? Something that would upend and redefine the e-book sector as we know it? And are the mysterious &#8220;books&#8221; to which Ihnatko refers really books and not the device themselves&#8230;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s nothing more frustrating than a fruitless Web search &#8212; or one that returns results that distract you from your original goal. Search giant Google knows this all too well and realizes that there&#8217;s a chance you might switch to another search engine if you get tired of poor results.</p>
<p>This week I tested two free tools that attempt to make your Web searches more relevant by learning from users&#8217; reactions to search results: Google&#8217;s SearchWiki and Surf Canyon Inc.&#8217;s namesake tool for Web browsers. These two don&#8217;t necessarily compete against each other; in fact, they can be used in tandem. But after initially entering a search query, SearchWiki requires additional work on the part of the user that many people may not want to do. Surf Canyon works automatically as you go, sorting results according to real-time user behavior.</p>

<p>SearchWiki depends on people to rank their own search results by promoting favored URLs to the top of a screen and knocking others to the bottom. It is available to most people who are logged into a Google account, and these user preferences are remembered if the same searches are performed at other times.</p>
<p>This sorting is done using elegant animation; preferred URLs float to the top of the screen when selected and unwanted results disappear in a magic-trick-like poof when removed. Comments about a link can be typed into a word bubble beside the URL and all comments are available to the public, labeled as posted by &#8220;Searcher&#8221; unless you create another nickname for yourself. People can also add preferred URLs to a search-results page if, for example, they know a better link about something than those that show up.</p>

<p>But who wants to do all this work? Google (GOOG) says your votes don&#8217;t influence the way other Google users see search results, nor do they affect your search results if you aren&#8217;t logged into Google. You can see the number of votes a URL got from fellow voters, as well as comments made about the URL &#8212; but only after you select a link at the bottom of the search-results page. If you promote a URL, you&#8217;ll automatically see what other people think about this link.</p>
<p>For your efforts, you&#8217;ll create a small collection of results that are saved in your account, sorted by date and time should you ever want to revisit them. This could come in handy in some circumstances, such as if you were researching a topic and you forgot to save Web pages as you went. Google confusingly calls these &#8220;SearchWiki notes,&#8221; though they really include all of the links you voted on, as well as typed-in notes about links.</p>
<p>SearchWiki is a tough sell because most of us are already trained to surf the Web quickly, skipping ahead and back through links without taking the time to rank those results or comment on them. And it only works with Google searches.</p>
<p>If you like the idea of more personalized Web searches but would like to use other search engines or don&#8217;t want to do extra work, you might like Surf Canyon. Once downloaded, this tool displays bull&#8217;s-eyes beside certain results to show that Surf Canyon has found additional related hits. Clicking on this bull&#8217;s-eye reveals those suggested links, pulled from deeper down in the search results, and these links might have bull&#8217;s-eyes of their own. This cascade of data goes on and on as an algorithm studies which of the returned results you do or don&#8217;t choose.</p>
<p>You might be deterred from using Surf Canyon because it must be downloaded before it works on Internet Explorer or Firefox. (A version of Surf Canyon for Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Safari browser is due out within a month.) This tool works with Google, Yahoo (YHOO), Microsoft Live Search (MSFT) and Craigslist, and just started working with LexisNexis&#8217;s LexisWeb.com legal-search engine.</p>
<p>Surf Canyon might not seem to be doing much at first, but it changes and reflects your preferences as you make them. For example, a search for &#8220;Obama dog&#8221; originally returned results about how the President-elect and his family are narrowing their search for a puppy. But as I opened more links related specifically to Mr. Obama&#8217;s daughters, more results appeared on screen about Sasha and Malia. Each time I hit the browser&#8217;s Back button to return to the original search page, Surf Canyon offered a new set of relevant URLs.</p>
<p>I tried looking at Craigslist.com for last-minute inauguration tickets, and one hit listed an inauguration-appropriate dress that someone was giving away free. The Surf Canyon bull&#8217;s-eye appeared beside this result, and when I selected it, three more dress listings appeared.</p>
<p>Surf Canyon recently released an option for users who want long-term personalization, found at my.surfcanyon.com. It lets people select sources from which they prefer to receive news, shopping, research, or sports and entertainment results. Individual sites not listed on this page can also be added to a list of sources to use; likewise, sites can be added to a blacklist so results never come from them.</p>
<p>Unlike Google, Surf Canyon doesn&#8217;t save your history or usage profile. And if you haven&#8217;t created personalized preferences using the link above, it responds solely using your as-they-happen signals, like when you choose one link over another.</p>
<p>Google&#8217;s SearchWiki is asking users to do extra work, which may not be practical for many users. But if you do use it, this tool&#8217;s personalized, saved results could be a real boon. Surf Canyon worked well for me with multiple search engines, retrieving data from result pages I likely wouldn&#8217;t have opened. Either way, your days of futile Web searching are numbered.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>Last week, when you wrote about the ChaCha cellphone search service, you didn&#8217;t say how they make money. Are they collecting phone numbers from customers so they can send spam text messages, or sell the numbers to others who will do so?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> ChaCha allows you to ask any Web-searchable question, by speaking it or texting it over a mobile phone, and then it sends you the answer via text message. The company charges consumers nothing, but says it is hoping to make money by striking deals with cellphone carriers to incorporate the ChaCha service into their current 411 phone-number look-up services. Also, it hopes to eventually include ads in the text message answers it provides.</p>
<p>In addition to the message that includes the answer, ChaCha sends you a message saying it is working on your request and restating your question, so you can see if it understood you correctly. It also sends an introductory text message to first-time users and occasional tips on how to use the service. Scott Jones, ChaCha&#8217;s chief executive, asserts that &#8220;we do not spam&#8221; and &#8220;we never make phone numbers and/or email addresses available to others.&#8221; He said the company is updating its privacy policy to make that clearer.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>We have DSL service. I use several Web-based applications, one of which is online backup, and my husband is concerned that they degrade his use of the Web, which includes creating Web sites. I contend that that is like saying turning on one light bulb is using too much electricity, that two people on one DSL line aren&#8217;t using up too much bandwidth. Who is right?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Every situation differs, depending on exactly which programs you are each using, how you have them set, whether you are using them simultaneously, and how fast your DSL connection is. However, in general, your husband is correct that it is possible for heavy Internet usage on one computer in a home to slow down Internet speeds on another.</p>
<p>This is especially true with something like online backup, because it relies on your DSL account&#8217;s upload speed, which is typically far slower than the download speed. If your online backup program is trying to push a bunch of files over a slow upload connection, while he is in another room trying to upload new versions of a Web site over the same narrow upload pipe, it could affect the speeds he gets. You might try coordinating or staggering those online activities that involve heavy uploading. Normal Web surfing or emailing shouldn&#8217;t require any such coordination.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I am thinking about purchasing a Dell (DELL) XPS One all-in-one desktop, but I have one question. Does the Dell&#8217;s built-in TV tuner require any extra attachments to watch TV right out of the box?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> You can watch over-the-air stations and analog basic cable stations right out of the box, without added equipment. However, you may want to connect a small desktop antenna to improve reception, which is what I did when I tested this machine. To use the XPS One with digital or premium cable or satellite stations, you would have to connect it to a cable or satellite receiver, just as most people do with their TV sets. This requires the use of an adapter that comes with the machine.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Here are a few questions I&#8217;ve received recently from people like you, and my answers. I have edited and restated the questions a bit, for readability. This week my mailbox contained questions about surfing the Internet on a television set, the security of Apple&#8217;s Safari Web browser for Windows computers, and the cost of AT&amp;T&#8217;s wireless service for laptops.</p>

<p class="question"> <em>Can you recommend a device that would allow me to surf the Web on a bedroom television connected via Ethernet and to control the device via a wireless keyboard or remote control?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> Perhaps the most direct approach would be to buy the MSN TV 2 device from Microsoft that is specifically meant for browsing the Web on a TV from a distance and can be used with Ethernet. It costs $200, plus a monthly fee, comes with a wireless keyboard and remote, and can be ordered at msntv.com.</p>
<p>A second option would be to buy a small computer with a wireless keyboard and hook it up to the bedroom TV instead of to a computer monitor. For instance, I have surfed the Web this way using a tiny $599 Mac Mini computer from Apple, which comes with a wireless remote and accepts almost any wireless keyboard, though it doesn&#8217;t come with one. There are numerous Windows computers that could do the same, and many cost less, though most are larger.</p>
<p>Another method would be to use a game console capable of surfing the Web, even if you have no intention of playing games. These are made to work with TV sets, and some can use a wireless keyboard and/or wireless controller to do the job. For instance, the $250 Nintendo Wii game machine has an optional Web-browsing function.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>Apple has released a Windows beta version of Safari. Is it any safer to use than Microsoft&#8217;s Internet Explorer?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> It&#8217;s too early to tell, as the Windows version of Safari is still in beta and is very new, to users and hackers alike.</p>
<p>Certainly, operating in Windows will make Safari much more vulnerable to attack than it is on the Macintosh operating system, if only because the writers of malicious software aim their firepower overwhelmingly at Windows. While Internet Explorer is hardly impregnable, it has become safer over the years, and Microsoft certainly has much more experience battling Windows security issues than Apple does. Apple has already issued some security updates for this new version of Safari and will undoubtedly have to keep issuing more to keep ahead of the bad guys.</p>
<p class="question"> <em>I am thinking of buying a ThinkPad laptop from Lenovo with AT&amp;T BroadbandConnect. Do I still need to buy some sort of card from AT&amp;T and insert it into the laptop, and must I pay a subscription fee to them?</em></p>
<p class="answer"> No, and yes. The laptop likely has the modem for AT&amp;T built in, so you can connect to the Internet via AT&amp;T&#8217;s cellular network without buying an external card. However, the service isn&#8217;t free. You can&#8217;t use it without a subscription, which typically runs $60 a month.</p>
