<p>Google will update its Wallet product at its I/O developer conference next week, but will not include the physical credit card that the company had considered launching at the event, according to sources.</p>
<p>Sources said the scuttling &#8212; for now &#8212; of an extended effort to roll out such a card was announced in a recent memo that also included the news that Google Wallet head Osama Bedier was leaving the company.</p>
<p>Those who have seen it said the Google card had a black face adorned with the whimsical rainbow &#8220;W&#8221; of the Google Wallet logo, a standard magnetic stripe and the usual raised numbers of a credit card embossed on it.</p>
<p>The card was part of Google&#8217;s larger strategic goal to know more about consumer purchases, given the immense potential value of that mostly offline-level data for its massive online advertising business.</p>
<p>Google is already sucking in that purchase data on many fronts &#8212; between Google Play payments, Google Checkout on the Web and also advertiser payments &#8212; in addition to the dedicated Google Wallet project.</p>
<p>But Wallet has been hampered by its focus on and use of NFC technology, which requires certain phones and special readers to make transactions. Google tried to make that easier by introducing a &#8220;<a href="http://googlecommerce.blogspot.tw/2012/08/use-any-credit-or-debit-card-with.html">cloud wallet</a>&#8221; last year that accommodated existing credit and debit cards, but it could still go further toward mobile payments at the register without using NFC.</p>
<p>The dumping of the physical card plan was certainly abrupt, since it had actually been built into the new update of Google Wallet, said sources, and some partners had thought the search giant might be demoing it at the event.</p>
<p>But Google still plans to update its Wallet rewards, offers and loyalty points with the addition of a <a href="http://www.google.com/wallet/how-it-works/in-store.html">larger group of merchants</a>, making it a fuller competitor to Apple&#8217;s Passbook. Within the Wallet, Google&#8217;s &#8220;proxy cards&#8221; help it get access to data by witnessing transaction flow to merchants.</p>
<p>However, these improvements won&#8217;t be integrated with another Google effort that&#8217;s similar, Google Now, which already includes support for mobile versions of United Airlines boarding passes and Fandango movie tickets in its Android mobile operating system version. Sources describe the Google Wallet and Google Now teams as &#8220;siloed,&#8221; which has presented some level of difficulty.</p>

<p>At Google, it was thought that a plastic card might be a way to attract a lot of consumers quickly with a payment method they are familiar with and that is convenient to them.</p>
<p>And the company seemed to have chosen a somewhat conservative approach. Sources said Google wasn&#8217;t planning to go so far as to become its own bank or try to disrupt existing interchanges &#8212; which would <em>really</em> shake things up in the credit industry &#8212; or to get data directly from Visa and MasterCard, which wouldn&#8217;t go over well with any number of players in the sector.</p>
<p>But sources also said that Google CEO Larry Page abruptly killed the card launch plan after he was displeased with a glitchy run-through demo last week. He had long been skeptical of a physical card solution, with several sources saying he felt it did not press forward innovation as payments startups like Square have done.</p>
<p>And as those plans fell apart, Bedier, VP of wallets and payments, was pushed out of the company. Google <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130508/google-loses-its-wallet-vp/">confirmed</a> the departure yesterday; it followed the internal shift of former local and commerce bigwig Jeff Huber to its Google X unit.</p>
<p>Today, the Wallet program is within Google&#8217;s ads and commerce division, run by SVPs Susan Wojcicki and Sridhar Ramaswamy. Of the two, Ramaswamy is the exec directly in charge of Wallet.</p>
<p>Another recent addition to the Wallet team is Nik Sathe, who joined at the beginning of this year after being VP of architecture and infrastructure at eBay&#8217;s PayPal unit, leading the online payments giant&#8217;s technology strategy. Google never announced Sathe&#8217;s arrival at the company, and did not reply to a request on Wednesday to confirm it.</p>

<p>Last night, a pack of Wojcickis was honored by the Bay Area&#8217;s well known public affairs forum, the Commonwealth Club, which was feting the Silicon Valley family of high achievers for their &#8220;noteworthy contributions to local and global society.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, as noted in a very lovely <a href="http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Bay-Area-s-Wojcicki-family-honored-4415518.php?t=8935827065">profile of the Wojcickis in the San Francisco Chronicle</a> earlier this week:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Stan is a pre-eminent physicist and professor emeritus at Stanford, and his wife, Esther, is an acclaimed educator in Palo Alto. Their oldest daughter, Susan, is senior vice president of advertising at Google; their middle daughter, Janet, is an epidemiologist and pediatric researcher on a Fulbright Fellowship in Swaziland; and their youngest daughter, Anne, married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin, is CEO of the revolutionary personal gene-mapping company, 23andMe.</p></blockquote>
<p>&#8220;Taken as a family, they are especially remarkable,&#8221; Commonwealth president and CEO Gloria Duffy told the Chronicle. &#8220;Here are two parents who did something very right to nurture these three daughters and give them the confidence that they could be leaders in fields that are largely male, whether medicine, high tech or biology.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed, which is why I went to the dinner for them last night at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco, to ask Stan and Esther (at whose fantastic journalism class at Palo Alto High I have spoken) how they managed to do so well raising their Wojcicki posse of accomplished women.</p>
<p>(That&#8217;s right &#8212; an untypical feel-good story from me, so <em>lean in</em>, people!)</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Moments ago, Google <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130313/android-chief-andy-rubin-moves-to-other-google-projects-while-sundar-pichai-takes-over/">CEO Larry Page announced in a blog post</a> that Android head Andy Rubin is moving on to other projects, and that Sundar Pichai is taking over. </p>
<p>So, who is Sundar Pichai? Well, as Pichai himself described his job at last year&#8217;s <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference, he is senior vice president of Google Chrome and Apps, which includes the Chrome browser and operating system, Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Drive, etc. Now add Android to the full list!</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-215546" alt="SusanWojcicki" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/05/SusanWojcicki-380x253.jpg" width="380" height="253" />HomeAway, the company that manages online vacation rentals sites, disclosed yesterday that Susan Wojcicki will no longer be on its board, effective immediately.</p>
<p>As you would suspect, the company was quick to say that the resignation was not a result of any disagreement with the company. Rather, it disclosed in a public filing, that Wojcicki is resigning due to &#8220;her need to focus on her significant responsibilities as senior vice president of product management and engineering for all advertising products at Google.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wojcicki joined HomeAway&#8217;s board in April 2011, right before the company went public. On the surface, Wojcicki&#8217;s experience would seem like a good fit for HomeAway since it describes itself as receiving substantially all of its revenue from customers who pay fees for &#8220;online advertising listing services.&#8221;</p>
<p>But maybe not. In fact, HomeAway&#8217;s model is not exactly an advertising model in the truest sense. Mos property owners pay HomeAway a subscription fee to list their rentals on the company&#8217;s various Web properties. In contrast, other companies like Yelp do not charge restaurants or merchants to appear in its database, but instead derive revenue from banners and other forms of advertising. Interestingly, other travel sites, like a start-up in Seattle called Dwellable, are currently trying to flip HomeAway&#8217;s model on its head by creating a free listings service, which then can be monetized through advertising later. Makes a lot of sense since the founder is from Urbanspoon, a Yelp competitor.</p>
<p>HomeAway also said it would be electing Tina Sharkey to fill Wojcicki&#8217;s vacancy. Sharkey, who will serve on the board&#8217;s compensation committee, was chairman and global President of BabyCenter, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, from 2007 to 2012. Prior to that, she held various senior positions at AOL from 2003 to 2006.</p>

<p>Fortune magazine put out its <a href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/most-powerful-women/">&#8220;50 Most Powerful Women in Business&#8221;</a> list today, which was topped by IBM CEO Ginni Rometty.</p>
<p>The nod to the leader of the longtime tech giant was followed by Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman at the No. 3 slot, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg at No. 8 and Oracle president and CFO Safra Catz at No. 10.</p>
<p>But it was &#8212; <em>shockeroo</em> &#8212; media magnet Marissa Mayer who claimed the very elegant solo photo on the cover (though it is from last year), as well as the No. 14 slot. She is also the youngest woman on the list, at 37 years old.</p>
<p>Mayer &#8212; the former Google exec whom Fortune correctly characterized as having been &#8220;somewhat marginalized&#8221; after 13 years at the search giant in <a href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/most-powerful-women/2012/snapshots/14.html">its write-up</a> &#8212; took over the troubled Yahoo in July. Since then, she has been making a series of dramatic cultural changes at the Silicon Valley Web icon as she preps for the more structural ones to come soon (and perhaps even before her first child is due in early October).</p>
<p>Other tech stars on the list include Google SVP Susan Wojcicki and IBM SVP Bridget Van Kralingen.</p>
<p>The most interesting part of the list, perhaps, is the fall of media giant Oprah Winfrey, who Fortune said &#8220;is the only woman with a spot on this list since its inception.&#8221; She is now in dead last at No. 50.</p>
<p>Speaking of marginalizing &#8211;<em>ouch</em>!</p>
<p>Fortune also has its annual big conference coming up that is linked to the well-known list. It takes place in early October and is run by longtime editor-at-large Pattie Sellers, who is co-chair of the Fortune event, called the Most Powerful Women Summit.</p>

<p>Women in tech had a good showing on Forbes magazine&#8217;s 2012 <a href="http://www.forbes.com/power-women/list/">&#8220;The World&#8217;s 100 Most Powerful Women&#8221;</a> list, which came out this past week.</p>
<p>Like the higher-profile tally from Fortune, it features the female movers and shakers from a variety of arenas.</p>
<p>No. 1 on the list is German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who has certainly had her hands full with the economic crisis in Europe this past year.</p>
<p>But women related to tech also were numerous in the group, so here&#8217;s the rundown:</p>

<p>The last interview of the 10th <strong>D: All Things</strong> Digital conference was a key one, since it featured perhaps Google&#8217;s two most important execs: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120531/google-vps-sundar-pichai-and-susan-wojcicki-talk-ads-chrome-and-youtube-video/">Susan Wojcicki and Sundar Pichai</a>.</p>
<p>Longtime exec Wojcicki &#8212; the search giant was literally founded in her garage &#8212; runs advertising products at Google, its money-gushing flagship division; Pichai&#8217;s charge is making the company&#8217;s products ubiquitous via its Chrome unit.</p>
<p>The pair talked about a wide range of things, from the progress of Chrome and its Android mobile offering to how it dominates the online ad market to accusations by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120625/hollywoods-ari-emanuel-has-strong-opinions-about-content-the-full-d10-interview-video/">Hollywood&#8217;s Ari Emanuel</a> that Google is a content thief.</p>

<p>On the <D> stage last night, Ari Emanuel <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120530/ari-emanuel-live-from-d10/">repeatedly called on Google to help filter copyrighted material</a>, speaking on behalf of the greater Hollywood cause from his role as co-CEO of William Morris Endeavor Agency.</p>
<p>Emanuel said he didn&#8217;t see why Google couldn&#8217;t filter for piracy, given that it filters for child pornography. He charged that Google &#8212; and the rest of Northern California &#8212; are unwilling to come to the table to negotiate a better alternative to SOPA.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think he was misinformed, very misinformed,&#8221; Google&#8217;s Susan Wojcicki responded today onstage. &#8220;We do not want to be building a business based on piracy.&#8221;</p>
<p>As compared to child porn, which people can generally recognize on sight, Wojcicki said, &#8220;When I see content, I don&#8217;t know if you own the copyright.&#8221;</p>
<p>Wojcicki, who leads advertising at Google, said Google has spent $30 million building its Content ID system, which checks YouTube content for copyright claims. And Google takes down more than one million URLs per month.</p>
<p>She rejected Emanuel&#8217;s suggestion that Google was unwilling to &#8220;come to the table,&#8221; given that Emanuel noted his team is working on multiple channels on YouTube for stars like Tyler Perry.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is not a technical problem, this is much more of a business issue,&#8221; Wojcicki argued. Even the lawyers associated with a single piece of content can&#8217;t agree who owns it, she said.<br />

<p>Would you like to read about foreign currency exchange and hedging programs? I know.</p>
<p>But Google would like Wall Street to think a bit about those topics, since it is blaming them for part of its Q4 earnings report shortfall. Google insists it had a great quarter, but both its revenue and earnings numbers came in well below the consensus.</p>
<p>One reason for that, Google says, is fluctuating currency rates: &#8220;Had foreign exchange rates remained constant from Q3 2011 through Q4 2011, our revenue in Q4 2011 would have been $239M higher,&#8221; the company says. Which means the company would have been much closer to investors&#8217; revenue estimates, for starters.</p>
<p>But analysts on the earnings call didn&#8217;t want to spend time talking about FX &#8212; they wanted to talk about CPC. That&#8217;s &#8220;cost-per-click&#8221; for Google&#8217;s core search ad business, and it dropped 8 percent over the quarter. Google insists that is a number that they shouldn&#8217;t obsess about, since it will fluctuate based on changes Google makes to its ad products, and as long as overall revenue is going up, it&#8217;s not a problem. </p>
<p>That answer, which they gave over and over, didn&#8217;t take, though. And at one point, Larry Page asked, semi-seriously, for analysts to stop asking about CPC. The next question was about CPC.</p>
<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<br />
<strong>EARLIER</strong><br />
First look at <a href="http://investor.google.com/earnings/2011/Q4_google_earnings.html">Google Q4 earnings</a>: $8.13 billion and earnings of $9.50. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120119/yawn-and-get-ready-for-another-giant-quarter-from-google/">Wall Street was expecting much more</a> &#8212; something like $8.4 billion and $10.50 a share.</p>
<p>Investors are behaving the way you might expect &#8212; they&#8217;ve dropped the company&#8217;s share price by 9 percent, to $581, in after-hours trading. Earlier today, GOOG was trading as high as $640.</p>
<p>&#8220;Google had a really strong quarter, ending a great year,&#8221; CEO Larry Page says, in a statement that doesn&#8217;t seem to acknowledge any weakness or slowdown. He also says Google+, the search giant&#8217;s answer to Facebook, is now up to 90 million users.</p>
<p>Google hired more than 1,000 people in the last three months of the year. It now employs 32,467 full-time workers.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re looking for a positive spin on today&#8217;s numbers, Google is happy to help. Q4 revenue was up 25 percent over the past year, it notes, and 9 percent more than Q3.</p>

<p>Google streams its earnings call (via <a href="http://www.youtube.com/googleir">YouTube</a>, of course) but in case you&#8217;d like to spend your time doing something else, I&#8217;ll be listening in and taking live notes here at 4:30 pm ET:</p>
<p><strong>4:30 pm</strong>: Good afternoon. Waiting for Google execs to come online to chat about Q4. Meanwhile, Google investors are shoveling shares out the door, and the stock is lurching, down more than 9 percent.</p>
<p><strong>4:31 pm</strong>: Call is starting. On the line, the now-usual lineup: Larry Page, CFO Patrick Pichette, product head Susan Wojcicki, sales boss Nikesh Arora.</p>
<p><strong>4:34 pm</strong>: Larry talking about &#8220;blowing past $10 billion&#8221; in revenue. Also the fact that David Beckham engaged in a Google+ &#8220;hangout&#8221; recently.</p>
<p>Larry talking about last week&#8217;s Google+ search revamp, &#8220;which I&#8217;m really excited about.&#8221; &#8220;To make a real impact in the world,&#8221; we need to shutter some stuff. We&#8217;ve turned off 12 projects in the last quarter, so we can double down on things like Chrome, Android, YouTube.</p>
<p>Android: 250 million devices, up 50 million in last quarter. Over 11 billion downloads from Android Market. &#8220;Wow.&#8221; (That&#8217;s from the script.)</p>
<p>&#8220;Chrome is on fire, too.&#8221; &#8220;People thought we were crazy. Who wants another browser?&#8221; But we were right!</p>
<p>Display (perhaps you&#8217;ve seen our piece in The Wall Street Journal just now). Now on a $5 billion run rate. DoubleClick up 130 percent year over year.</p>
<p>&#8220;Very pleased&#8221; with ads on YouTube.</p>
<p>That display ad run rate, by the way, is up 2x <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101014/google-q3-beats-earnings-estimates/">from October 2010</a>. </p>
<p><strong>4:40 pm</strong>: Now CFO Pichette. He&#8217;s also very pleased with the quarter. Walking through numbers:</p>
<p>Pichette talking up negative effects of foreign currency moves, which the company also stresses in its pullout slides. We&#8217;ll see if investors go for that (curious if analysts feel they have decent visibility into FX for GOOG).</p>
<p>Skipping most of these numbers, since you can get most of it from release and also via <a href="http://investor.google.com/pdf/2011Q4_google_earnings_slides.pdf">supplementary slides</a>.</p>
<p>Pichette warns that Google will keep spending a lot on capex, and that that spend will be &#8220;lumpy.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>4:45 pm</strong>: Arora to talk about sales. &#8220;Strong performance across the portfolio.&#8221;</p>
<p>Arora lays in a series of numbers that don&#8217;t really register with me, in part because Page and Pichette just mentioned some of them. That display ad number is still quite amazing, though we would of course love to know how that&#8217;s split up between &#8220;regular&#8221; Web ads, YouTube and mobile.</p>
<p>Another shout-out for David Beckham. (Who I assume is still a big international star, even though I&#8217;m pretty sure the U.S. has moved on after a brief flirtation.)</p>
<p>An actual &#8220;shout-out&#8221;! To international business teams.</p>
<p><strong>4:51 pm</strong>: Wojcicki, who starts by explaining/defending &#8220;Search plus Your World&#8221; changes rolled out earlier this month. More personalized results: Pictures friends have taken, article mom had shared, etc. Just like Facebook, which is the point.</p>
<p>Sorry, lost the string here. But really, this is the part that you can always skip during the call: A number-free brochure.</p>
<p><strong>4:57 pm</strong>: Q&#038;A:<br />
Q: Did you see a big shift in mobile use over the holiday?<br />
A: Larry: Nikesh, you answer. Nikesh: &#8220;Mobile growing by leaps and bounds.&#8221; &#8220;So yes, we are seeing tremendous usage, and we also saw uptick during holidays,&#8221; when people were looking for stuff.</p>
<p>Q: So is CPC decline because more people went through mobile?<br />
A: Nikesh: Susan, you answer that. Susan: Two biggest factors were FX and changes we&#8217;ve made, which increase paid clicks &#8212; better for everyone &#8212; but those clicks may have a lower cost.</p>
<p>Q: What&#8217;s in that $5B display number? Same as the $2.5B number from October 2010?<br />
A: Pichette: Yep &#8212; take out text, count mobile, count YouTube. Apples to apples.</p>
<p>Q: How did Europe affect numbers? Also, can you give us a sense of &#8220;blended TAC rate&#8221; for that $5B?<br />
A: Not talking about $5B breakout. On the economy: &#8220;Quite a solid Q4 performance.&#8221; Separate from FX issues, Europe was &#8220;quite healthy, despite the environment.&#8221;</p>
<p>Q: YouTube. Can you give us a little more insight there? Are you seeing signs that TV ad budgets are coming to YouTube? Where are YouTube monies coming from?</p>
<p>A: Pichette: &#8220;YouTube is doing absolutely terrific.&#8221; Larry on YouTube ads: &#8220;Tremendously excited about our growth &#8230; but it&#8217;s not significant compared to the overall video space.&#8221; TV advertisers not thinking about it. (Which is the point of the channel strategy.)</p>
<p>Missed Q on Android. Here&#8217;s Larry Page&#8217;s answer: Early stages of monetization. We do make money on it via ads, and some people are buying apps, too (most downloads are free). &#8220;I&#8217;m very, very optimistic.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>5:06 pm</strong>: Q: More on CPC being down. Question involves &#8220;rank order,&#8221; so my head hurts.<br />
A: Pichette: Panda search changes will show up next Q. FX changes we can&#8217;t do anything about.</p>
<p>[Missed next exchange]</p>
<p><strong>5:09 pm</strong>: Q: Another CPC question. Talk more about this, please. Also, your traffic acquisition costs are up. Why?<br />
Pichette. TAC increase is &#8220;just a mix issue.&#8221; (Mobile mix or partner mix? &#8220;Yes,&#8221; says Pichette.)<br />
Wojciki: Like I said, FX and changes we made to ad quality are the reason that CPC is down. This quarter, we made a lot of changes. Quarter before, we did a lot, too. Some Q3 changes show up in Q4. &#8220;But not any one big one &#8212; it was the sum of many other changes.&#8221;</p>
<p>Oh, Google earnings call. You are defeating my powers of concentration.</p>
<p>Q: Discussion of hedging program. &#8220;Is this working the way you want?&#8221; Also, CPC seems to be going the way you want, even though it costs you money. Please talk about that.<br />
A: Pichette gives answer about hedging that is 100 percent jibberjabber to me, because I can barely master a checking account.</p>
<p>Larry Page on CPC: &#8220;I do think that CPCs do vary a fair amount, and we&#8217;re not surprised by that.&#8221; Some changes we make will push it up, others down. Not that big a deal.</p>
<p>Q: Are you happy with the results over the quarter? A: Larry: Like I said, yes.</p>
<p>Wojciki: Instead of focusing on CPC decline, you should note that paid clicks are up 34 percent.<br />
Page: Can the next question not be about CPC?</p>
<p>Q: Nope, it&#8217;s a question about CPC.<br />
A: Pichette: Overall, you&#8217;re seeing more clicking, and we&#8217;re getting a better overall result. If CPC goes down for some reason, &#8220;that&#8217;s just the nature of experimentation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Q: Google+ question for Larry. Please describe how G+ can increase engagement on all properties.<br />
Larry: Engaging with users, really deeply; really, really important. G+ really important part of that effort. Notion of identity really important. With &#8220;other big companies that work on social data &#8230; we&#8217;ve seen a general data to wall that garden off.&#8221; We like to partner with third parties. &#8220;But in general, companies have been walling that data off,&#8221; and we&#8217;d love to use it. (Here I would like to see the facial expressions of Dick Costolo and Mark Zuckerberg.)</p>
<p>Q: Do you need more markets for e-commerce play? Thirty markets right now.<br />
A: Wojciki. Yes, we&#8217;re good. We&#8217;ll expand, but we need to learn from the places we&#8217;re in right now.</p>
<p>Q: Last year, in Q4, you talked about big changes &#8220;on the quality side.&#8221; Talk about that. Also, you hired less people this Q than in other Qs. Trend?<br />
A: We talked about it last year, because it was a big deal. As far as hiring, Larry already said we were growing very fast &#8212; Larry interrupts here: &#8220;The edge of what was manageable&#8221; &#8212; so now we&#8217;ve slowed.</p>
<p>Last Q: More on Google Wallet, please. Are you going to double down on that? Also on Motorola: Given $12.5B size, won&#8217;t that affect &#8220;growth and margin profile&#8221;? So please talk about mobile philosophy.</p>
<p>A: Wojcicki: Like Larry said, we&#8217;re focusing on core products that people use every day, and you use you wallet every day, so it&#8217;s a big deal for us. &#8220;Very excited about Wallet, and will continue to invest in it.&#8221;</p>

<p>Today, Fortune magazine released its annual <a href="http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fortune/most-powerful-women/2011/">&#8220;50 Most Powerful Women in Business&#8221;</a> and, as usual, it had its share of tech execs on the list.</p>
<p>And off it, too &#8212; first and foremost being ousted Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who was jacked completely from her 2010 No. 10 rank. She was No. 8 in 2009.</p>
<p>In her place: Newly designated Hewlett-Packard CEO and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman grabbed the No. 9 spot. </p>
<p>Also on the list: fast-rising IBM sales, marketing and strategy exec Ginni Rometty at No. 7; Xerox CEO Ursula Burns at No. 8; Oracle President and CFO Safra Catz at No. 11; Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg at No. 12; Google execs Susan Wojcicki and Marissa Mayer at No. 28 and No. 38, respectively; IBM North America GM Bridget Van Kralingen at No. 39; and Best Buy Americas President Shari Ballard.</p>
<p>Catz was the highest paid of the group, with $42.1 million in total 2010 compensation.</p>
<p>And also taken off this year: 2010 No. 14, HP&#8217;s Ann Livermore, who left her top job there, but still is on the tech giant&#8217;s board; 2010 No. 28 Cathie Lesjak, CFO of HP; 2010 No. 44 Lorrie Norrington, a former president at eBay; and Apple&#8217;s communications head Katie Cotton (she was <em>robbed</em>!), who was No. 50 in 2010.</p>
<p>The new list will be in the magazine on Monday, which is when a related conference will take place in Southern California. (I will also be in attendance there, along with other less powerful ladies.)</p>
<p>Whitman is <a href="http://www.fortuneconferences.com/mpws/program.html">scheduled to speak at the conference</a> in the afternoon on Tuesday, October 4.</p>

<p>The firing of Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz leaves open one of the bigger and more difficult jobs in tech &#8212; one that has taken its toll on many.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, rapper Snoop Dogg stepped right up to the Twitter plate yesterday, as soon as news broke of the ouster.</p>
<p><a href="https://twitter.com/#!/SnoopDogg/statuses/111223802049990656">Tweeted Snoop Dogg</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;Im takn over as tha CEO of Yahoo. Need sum of tha Snoop Dogg content ya digg. Nuff Said.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not nearly <em>nuff</em>!</p>
<p>Thus, while the Yahoo board has yet to begin a search, I have already been hard at work on selecting the next CEO. </p>
<p>(Last time, the company took <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20081118/yahoos-peter-chernin-principle-and-other-ceo-choices/">none of my suggestions</a>, but after the most recent result, the directors might want to pay mind!)</p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo is looking for an experienced Internet type, either from inside or outside the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo has put its flag in the ground as a digital media company with a technology base,&#8221; said one source. &#8220;The job requires big buckets of expertise and needs someone who will grow the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>Here I go with the outsiders:</p>

<p><strong>Peter Chernin:</strong> The former News Corp. exec has been eyeing Yahoo for a possible takeover with other investors. Both Yahoo and I had <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101117/enter-the-chernin-former-news-corp-president-and-coo-in-yahoo-what-if-mix/">picked him</a> when co-founder Jerry Yang stepped down as CEO almost three years ago, and he had declined the offer. This time, perhaps a big chunk of the company and total autonomy would work, even if making a hit like &#8220;Rise of the Planet of the Apes&#8221; is more fun.</p>

<p><strong>Sheryl Sandberg:</strong> The COO of Facebook is sort of the anti-Bartz, with a smooth and efficient persona, and she is an experienced tech exec. But the former Google exec is at a place of growth at the social networking site, and is unlikely to want to leave the big show, especially since a blockbuster IPO is looming.</p>

<p><strong>Jason Kilar:</strong> The Hulu CEO is in the midst of the process of selling the premium video service, with Yahoo as a bidder. While he has some tense relations with the studios, Kilar is top notch in his dedication to consumer products, and has a lot of experience from his stint at Amazon, too. </p>

<p><strong>Dan Rosensweig:</strong> Currently CEO of IPO-headed Chegg textbook rental service, the former Yahoo exec never got a chance to run the company as its top leader. Well-connected and still well-liked by the troops at Yahoo, it still would be pretty hard for him to go home again.</p>

<p><strong>Dave Goldberg:</strong> Sure, he&#8217;s married to Sandberg (see above), but the savvy CEO of polling phenom SurveyMonkey is one of the sharpest thinkers in Silicon Valley. He sold his music company to Yahoo many years ago and has a strong background in consumer online services.</p>

<p><strong>Jon Miller:</strong> The chief digital exec at News Corp. almost got the CEO spot years ago when Carl Icahn was agitating for change at Yahoo, before Time Warner blocked him via a noncompete. With the mishegas at the media giant, and dwindling digital businesses there, it might be a good escape hatch for Miller.</p>

<p><strong>Susan Wojcicki:</strong> The accomplished Google exec, who runs all its ad products, has the kind of calm, cool, collected persona that Yahoo could use right about now. The search giant was founded in her garage, and she has been a key part of its success since then. Wojcicki is also an understated class act in hey-look-at-me Silicon Valley.</p>

<p><strong>Todd Bradley:</strong> The Hewlett-Packard exec just got blindsided when the company kicked webOS to the curb. While he is in line to run a possible spinoff of the device business, Bradley might also want to jump out of the frying pan into the fire.</p>

<p><strong>Mike McCue:</strong> The CEO of Flipboard would certainly energize Yahoo with his intense focus on quality and consumer delight. The news app start-up could be a good addition to Yahoo, and McCue, the former Netscape and Microsoft exec who is well-liked in the Internet scene, would be, too.</p>

<p><strong>Joanne Bradford:</strong> The former Yahoo advertising head bolted Bartz&#8217;s regime early on to run revenue for Demand Media. Well-liked in the ad business, she also knows where all the bodies are buried at Yahoo. Since ads and media are key at the company, she&#8217;d make an interesting choice.</p>

<p><strong>Yusuf Mehdi:</strong> The Microsoft online exec would also be a left-field candidate to run Yahoo, given his even-keeled personality and longtime experience in the sector. And, though pricey, Mehdi&#8217;s impact on Bing search has been important. But he&#8217;s also been involved in the software giant&#8217;s lackluster ad and search partnership and still has not turned around the situation at MSN.</p>

<p><strong>Kevin Johnson:</strong> The former Microsoft exec and current CEO of Juniper was once slated to be the CEO of Yahoo, had Microsoft managed to win the company in its hostile takeover attempt. In fact, Johnson was the architect of the idea of Yahoo running the media and Microsoft running the tech.</p>

<p><strong>Tim Armstrong:</strong> Well, he might have been a good candidate before the downward slide of AOL and a recent series of questionable judgments. If Armstrong can&#8217;t keep a loud tech blogger in line, it&#8217;s not clear he can wrangle the Yahoo beast.</p>
<p>And here&#8217;s the insider scoop:</p>

<p><strong>Ross Levinsohn:</strong> The former News Corp. exec is running the Americas for Yahoo, which puts him in charge of the company&#8217;s key businesses. But he&#8217;s still struggling to turn the ad business around, and how well he does that could be a major determinant of his success. But <em>fantastic</em> hair!</p>

<p><strong>Blake Irving:</strong> The former Microsoft exec has an amiable nature and is well-liked at Yahoo, but he still needs to show that the company can ship some innovative products, and quickly. Like Livestand, the news reader, which is muchly late.</p>

<p><strong>David Kenny:</strong> The Yahoo board member is now president of Akamai, which might preclude him from the job. But the well-regarded exec &#8212; he&#8217;s a snazzy dresser, too &#8212; ran one of the Internet&#8217;s top digital ad agencies and now has tech chops from the content delivery network.</p>
<p>Memo to Yahoo board: I have a million more ideas, from former Viacom exec Tom Freston to former Yahoo board member Eric Hippeau. Or why not bring back a passel of former Yahoos to advise, such as former CEO Terry Semel or former president Sue Decker?</p>
<p>Or Oprah! I hear Winfrey will be in Silicon Valley later this week, and she has a lot more free time now. </p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Larry Page spared only two minutes of his day to drop in on his highly anticipated first earnings call as <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110404/larry-page-as-ceo-steve-jobs-or-jerry-yang/">CEO of Google</a>, which <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20110414/googles-q1-an-earnings-miss/">Peter Kafka is live-blogging here</a>.</p>
<p>In an exceedingly calm voice, Page said he is &#8220;very excited about Google and our momentum,&#8221; adding his new team has &#8220;really hit the ground running,&#8221; with the changeover from long-time CEO Eric Schmidt &#8220;working very well, exactly as we have planned.&#8221;</p>
<p>Then CFO and SVP Patrick Pichette took control, accompanied by SVP of Advertising Susan Wojcicki and SVP of Commerce and Local Jeff Huber, as well as SVP and Chief Business Officer Nikesh Arora piping up for the Q&amp;A.</p>
<p>Wojcicki and Huber were recently promoted as part of Page&#8217;s <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110407/the-larry-page-reorg-top-lieutenants-promoted-to-svp/">inaugural management reorganization</a>. The two have been invited to speak on earnings calls before, <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/199030-google-inc-q1-2010-earnings-call-transcript">appearing on the line-up</a> for the Q1 2010 call.</p>
<p>Earnings call regular Jonathan Rosenberg, who is <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110404/product-chief-jonathan-rosenberg-to-leave-google/">leaving the company</a>, did not participate.</p>
<p>Earnings call ringleader Pichette remains CFO, and Page <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110411/more-googquake-aftershocks-cfo-patrick-pichette-adds-bizops-and-hr-to-his-duties/">expanded his role</a> to include human resources and business operations.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In addition to streamlining his product team, Google CEO Larry Page made some changes on the business operations side in his first week back on the job. SVP and CFO Patrick Pichette has added business operations and human resources to his duties, according to several sources.</p>
<p>Until now, business operations has been managed by Shona Brown, who had also once run &#8220;People Operations,&#8221; as human resources is called at Google.</p>
<p>More recently, HR has been run by VP Laszlo Bock, who initially reported to Brown and later directly to former CEO Eric Schmidt.</p>
<p>He will now report to Pichette, sources said.</p>

<p>Brown will narrow her duties to leading Google&#8217;s philanthropic efforts, via <a href="http://www.google.org/">Google.org</a>. She takes over from new business development VP Megan Smith (please see disclosure below), who has run &#8220;Dot Org&#8221; on an interim basis as its general manager since the departure of its initial high-profile Executive Director Larry Brilliant in 2009.</p>
<p>Google declined to comment on personnel matters.</p>
<p>Brown has been with Google since 2003 (which was well after Larry 1.0; Eric Schmidt became CEO in 2001). Here&#8217;s how my colleague John Paczkowski <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110408/pageyank-as-a-new-svps-are-born-at-google-whither-the-others-already-there/">described her role last week</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Before she came to Google, Brown spent a decade consulting for McKinsey and is widely credited with optimizing Google’s internal structure.</p>
<p>But Page is not a McKinsey guy and he’s obviously not a big fan of Google’s current management organization anymore.</p>
<p>That might not bode well for the legendarily sharp-elbowed Brown who most sources describe as highly strategic but also as extremely difficult to work with.</p>
<p>Still, if Page is tinkering with the way Google is organized, Brown might also be the one he turns to to find a new structure.</p>
<p>That said, he seems to be fine doing it on his own and some suggest Brown will move to another role within the company rather than leaving.</p>
<p>Not all agree.</p>
<p>Said one source: “I wouldn’t be shocked to see Shona go. Frankly, I’m surprised she survived as long as she did, but then I didn’t think Rosenberg would last this long either.”</p>
<p>But, said another about Brown, who has previously taken time off from Google and returned: “I’d never count Shona out.”</p></blockquote>

<p>Page&#8217;s big reorg aims to make the 12-year-old company he co-founded faster and more innovative to fend off the stagnation of middle age. The first step was <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110404/product-chief-jonathan-rosenberg-to-leave-google/">removing long-time product chief Jonathan Rosenberg</a>, followed by the <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20110407/the-larry-page-reorg-top-lieutenants-promoted-to-svp/">elevation of seven long-time product leaders</a> to senior vice president of their respective domains: Sundar Pichai (Chrome), Vic Gundotra (social), Andy Rubin (mobile), Salar Kamangar (YouTube), Alan Eustace (search), Susan Wojcicki (ads) and Jeff Huber (local and commerce).</p>
<p>And as for the newest big winner, Patrick Pichette? Unlike many of the others in Page&#8217;s inner circle, Pichette is a more recent Googler. After spending seven years at Bell Canada, Pichette replaced the retiring George Reyes in 2008.</p>
<p>Pichette has been a regular presence on Google quarterly earnings calls, the next of which is this Thursday at 1:30 PT. While whatever Google did in the first quarter of 2011 was surely interesting, the call should be the first public comment on the new Page regime. It will be a big test for Page, who <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110404/larry-page-as-ceo-steve-jobs-or-jerry-yang/">notoriously loathes the public eye</a>.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.google.com/corporate/execs.html">Google&#8217;s management bio page</a> should be sent packing to the Internet Archive any day now.</p>
<p>While it&#8217;s only a week out of date&#8211;my, how things have changed.</p>

Now Dick Costolo&#8217;s job is to turn it into a business&#8211;one big enough to justify the sky-high valuation investors have given the messaging company.</p>
<p>He&#8217;ll talk to Kara Swisher about the company&#8217;s efforts to sell advertising on the service, and if we&#8217;re lucky, he&#8217;ll give us a glimpse of his improv comedy roots, too. Don&#8217;t be shy, Dick!</p>
<p>Dick starts off by insulting Kara&#8217;s vest. &#8220;Matador casual,&#8221; he calls it. Good one! Kara responds by asking him why he&#8217;s hanging out at CES.</p>

<p>The same reason everyone else is, Dick says: To talk to industry people. For example, he&#8217;d like to get device makers to preload some features like &#8220;Fast Follow.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara wants to know if Dick would like a &#8220;Twitter button&#8221; installed on phones. No, says Dick. But he&#8217;d like Twitter to work the same way on different platforms.</p>
<p>So how do you make that happen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re assigning a product team to make sure that this happens.</p>
<p>Kara: And you&#8217;re talking to TV people, too? What&#8217;s that about?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Because mainstream TV viewing, more and more, they have a device in their hand when they&#8217;re watching TV. Like on &#8220;Glee.&#8221; The characters tweet while the show is on. [This baffles Kara.] When &#8220;Glee&#8221; starts, tweets per second for &#8220;Glee&#8221; shoot up, and stay up 100 times that level until the show ends, and then they drop.</p>
<p>That has interesting implications. Like, it takes the DVR out of the mix, because you have to watch in real time to make it worthwhile.</p>

<p>But we don&#8217;t know if all of this means Twitter while you watch TV, or Twitter actually on your TV screen.</p>
<p>Kara: Is it important for you to be on the screen?</p>
<p>Dick: We&#8217;re already on the screen. But we don&#8217;t know if that will be the mainstream experience.</p>
<p>Kara: We had Steve Levitan from &#8220;Modern Family&#8221; talking about how the Web doesn&#8217;t help him, but that he and his team like Twitter.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! &#8220;I was having a conversation with Conan O&#8217;Brien, as one does&#8221; and he was talking about the importance of Twitter to him, and how the 140 character limit is the right length for a joke. It&#8217;s definitely the case that network TV people like Twitter, because it gives them feedback, like they&#8217;re in the theater, watching how the shows play out.</p>
<p>Kara: Keep talking about celebrities! I love celebrities.</p>
<p>Dick: Sure! The folks that we&#8217;ve hired to work with talent and agencies, etc., we think of those people has high-value publishers. They have a huge following. A lot of people are on Twitter just to hear what those folks have to say.</p>

<p>The interesting thing about the top 200 to 300 tweeters&#8211;a lot of them are musicians, actors, etc. LeBron James, etc. I think Lady Gaga is number one. But! They&#8217;re not <em>all</em> celebrities. There&#8217;s CNN Breaking News. And the New York Times. And other brands like Gary Vaynerchuk, who aren&#8217;t really that known outside that world.</p>
<p>And Twitter is disaggregating some of those businesses. Like a third of all the players in the NFL playoffs are using Twitter actively. And many players have more followers than their teams. [Here Dick explains football to Kara.] That&#8217;s fascinating.</p>
<p>Kara: Let&#8217;s go back to phones. Whats the most important device? Tablet? PC? Phone?</p>
<p>Dick: Mobile is a more and more and more common use of Twitter&#8211;40 percent of all tweets created on mobile devices. That might seem low, but it was 25 percent a year ago. 50 percent of active users are also active on mobile.</p>
<p>But Twitter ought to work platform to platform. We want to be agnostic.</p>
<p>Kara: What about what&#8217;s coming out from Palm? Working with them?</p>
<p>Dick: Not yet.</p>
<p>Kara: What about games? Talking to those guys?</p>
<p>Dick: Yep. Like with Microsoft on their Xbox, you can see integrating tweets into people who have discussions on Xbox.</p>
<p>Dick: You lost interest in the answer to your question. [True!]</p>
<p>Kara: You&#8217;re so annoying.</p>
<p>[Some laughter. Not a lot, though!]</p>
<p>Dick: Anyway, the important thing for us is consistency across device to device to device.</p>
<p>Kara: Speaking of working consistently, how&#8217;s that going for Twitter?</p>
<p>Dick: Right. So, we raised a bunch of money. We&#8217;re hiring &#8220;tons of engineers and operations engineers&#8221; in the last year. We hired 100 people in Q4, out of about 350 total. And we&#8217;re working very hard on erasing our &#8220;technical debt.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: &#8220;That&#8217;s a great word for fuck-ups&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick: Anyway, we&#8217;ve got a guy assigned to this pretty much exclusively. And there used to be a tolerance for this, and now there isn&#8217;t. If someone fires a pistol next to your ear every hour, after a while you stop flinching when you hear it. It&#8217;s crucial that we do this, both for our users and our engineers, who shouldn&#8217;t have to get up at 3 am all the time.</p>
<p>Kara: Time for a vision question, which stumps Yahoo. What is Twitter? What is your vision?</p>
<p>Dick: &#8220;We want to instantly connect people everywhere to what&#8217;s most important to them.&#8221;</p>
<p>See, that&#8217;s a good statement. We&#8217;re not just a social network that&#8217;s connecting people. It&#8217;s connecting for a purpose.</p>
<p>So some people meet girlfriends on Twitter. And other people get tickets to shows they like on Twitter. Etc.</p>
<p>And you don&#8217;t have to tweet to get a lot of value out of it.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s the percentage of people who just read Twitter, and don&#8217;t tweet themselves?</p>
<p>Dick: Rising. And we have to make that easier to do. &#8220;We&#8217;re going to spend a lot of time making that consumption experience much better.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s your business plan?</p>
<p>Dick: To continue to raise money!</p>

<p>Dick: I&#8217;m going to steal Jeff Weiner&#8217;s line. We&#8217;re a technology company that&#8217;s in the media business. Our business model is an advertising model [cough, cough, that's familiar! You're welcome!] So we&#8217;re selling ads, and we&#8217;re letting people promote their accounts, etc. And we really don&#8217;t have to do anything else. Our engagement rates on these ads are ridiculously high. When we saw our stats this last spring when we launched, the numbers were so big we thought we were measuring it incorrectly.</p>
<p>Kara: Is that a big enough business to be a standalone company and/or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: It&#8217;s enough to be a standalone company.</p>
<p>Kara: Sell or IPO?</p>
<p>Dick: We want to be a standalone company. It&#8217;s my sincere hope. We&#8217;ve accomplished 1 percent of what we want to do.</p>

<p>Kara: You like to sell companies, though.</p>
<p>Dick. Yes, I had two companies that I sold. But that doesn&#8217;t mean we&#8217;ll sell this one. I&#8217;ve had two kids too. But I shouldn&#8217;t get a reputation for having kids.</p>
<p>Kara: What&#8217;s up with people buying and selling secondary shares of Twitter. It&#8217;s an issue for Facebook. What about you?</p>
<p>Dick: We keep an eye on it, and talk to employees about it. But I just think that there are other people that are focusing on it and paying attention, and I&#8217;ll let them talk about it. But I just don&#8217;t think about that stuff on a day-to-day basis.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Questions and Answers</h4>
<p><strong>Q: [sorry missed it].</strong></p>
<p>But answer seems to be about whether Twitter is a platform company or not. Dick quotes Ev Williams by saying they&#8217;re not a platform company&#8211;they&#8217;ve had an API. They want people to be able build off Twitter and build into Twitter. Which requires a more robust API.</p>
<p>Kara has more questions. How do you look at yourself as a leader?</p>
<p>Dick: As a very bald leader.</p>
<p>Kara: But you&#8217;re very different than Evan.</p>
<p>Dick: Right. Two components. Three founders at company: Ev, Jack, Biz. They all come at it from a different angle. Jack thinks about simplicity and elegance and the mobile experience. Ev thinks about the user. Biz is &#8220;the protector of the brand and the guardian of the culture.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kara: He&#8217;e the guy who goes on Colbert.</p>
<p>Dick: And he&#8217;s great at it. Anyway, those guys are great. My focus is on operational greatness. I try to emulate operators like Ben Horowitz (Opsware) and Susan Wojcicki (Google).</p>

<p><strong>Q: What&#8217;s up with that internal page rank for each user? asks Ben Parr from Mashable.</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Your&#8217;re not exactly right. We play around with stuff like that. But there&#8217;s nothing robust that we would think of productizing anytime soon, and we don&#8217;t use it for things like resonance, which we use in ads.</p>
<p><strong>Q: [Sorry, couldnt quite understand.]</strong></p>
<p>Dick is talking about WikiLeaks in general, says there was something specific about WikiLeaks today that he can’t talk about. In general, he hates government mandates to keep things quiet. And he hates that a woman in China was punished for retweeting something. He reiterates Twitter&#8217;s desire to connect people with useful information. “We’re going to lash out at things that prevent us from doing that, as aggressively as we can.” The proof is that we’re banned in China. “We’re not going to sacrifice what we’re trying to do to, you know, get into this country over here.”</p>

<p><strong>Q: How will you work with brands in the future, vs. advertising?</strong></p>
<p>Dick: Our promoted suite of stuff doesn&#8217;t simply let advertisers use a giant bullhorn. This stuff has to be organic. &#8220;It almost is like a quality-assurance program.&#8221;</p>

<p>Dick is now talking about Twitter and international growth and language. Twitter is growing fast in the U.K. but not in Germany. Why is that? Because German has really, really long words. &#8220;There&#8217;s a bunch of stuff we want to do, and have to do&#8221; just to make things usable in those languages.</p>
<p><strong>Last question, from Kara: What&#8217;s the most interesting thing you&#8217;ve seen at CES?</strong></p>
<p>Dick won&#8217;t give a one-word answer. CES is a &#8220;quantum conference.&#8221; Some years are transformational, some are incremental. &#8220;This seems like it was an incremental year.&#8221;</p>

<p>Today, it&#8217;s Google advertising bigwig <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20101207/susan-wojcicki-google-svp-and-advertising-chief-live-at-d-dive-into-mobile/">Susan Wojcicki</a> (pictured here), who talked with MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka about the search giant&#8217;s mobile ad strategy.</p>
<p>Google has plunged deeply into the nascent market, with its $750 million acquisition of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091109/google-acquires-admob-for-750-million-in-stock-the-press-release/">AdMob</a> last year, facing tough competition from Apple.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As promised, <strong>All Things Digital</strong> will be publishing the full videos of the interviews we did two weeks ago at our <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> conference in San Francisco.</p>
<p>The first extension of the event, it produced some very newsy sessions. We&#8217;ll be posting them all.</p>

<p>Today, it&#8217;s former Palm CEO <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101207/live-at-dive-hps-jon-rubinstein/">Jon Rubinstein</a> (pictured here), who has moved his mobile unit over to Hewlett-Packard.</p>
<p>As head of the Palm global business unit, Rubinstein is leading HP&#8217;s efforts in the mobility space, responsible for webOS software development and related hardware products, including smartphones and tablets.</p>
<p>Despite his setbacks at Palm, which he talks about in the interview below, Rubinstein will continue to try to best Google&#8217;s Android and Apple iPhone.</p>

<p>You’d have to search a long time to find someone who’s been closer to the evolution of Google than Susan Wojcicki. It was in her rented garage that Sergey Brin and Larry Page launched the company, which she joined in 1999.</p>
<p>Today, while much of the attention on Google focuses on Android or Chrome, Gmail or YouTube, Wojcicki oversees the operations from which Google generates the bulk of its revenue and profits: AdWords, AdSense and DoubleClick among them. And in October she was made one of Google’s eight senior vice presidents.</p>
<p>She’s lately been quoting research from Forrester, which found that while 42 percent of people do research online before buying something, only 7 percent of those purchases happen online. Mobile advertising, she has argued recently, can help bridge that gap. Expect lots of discussion around that stemming from last year&#8217;s $750 million acquisition of mobile advertising firm AdMob.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, let&#8217;s be honest: Everyone wants to know what really happened between Google and Groupon.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p><strong>8:36 am</strong>: Everyone is seated in the ballroom, and the session with Wojcicki is about to start.</p>
<p><strong>8:39 am</strong>: Walt and Kara have come out onto the stage, thanking the audience for their support at big <strong>D</strong> and this week at <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>.</p>
<p>Before Wojcicki comes to the stage, they are introducing the new writers at <strong>All Things Digital</strong>:</p>

<p><strong>8:43 am</strong>: Walt and Kara hand the stage off to Peter Kafka, who will be conducting the interview with Susan Wojcicki.</p>
<p><strong>8:44 am</strong>: We&#8217;re getting started. Peter Kafka is interviewing Susan. She says when she first rented to Larry and Sergey, they weren&#8217;t allowed to come in the front door.</p>
<p><strong>8:45 am</strong>: Susan: I charged them $1,700 a month in rent.</p>
<p><strong>8:45 am</strong>: Peter: Let&#8217;s start with mobile. It&#8217;s a big business but small for Google at $1 billion. Break out that billion dollars.</p>
<p>Susan: We don&#8217;t break it out. But they are all growing. To give you an idea of the growth, we saw a 4x increase year over year in the number of searches. AdMob has doubled, and is doing more than a billion ad requests per day.</p>
<p><strong>8:48 am</strong>: Mobile brings an opportunity not just to bring people to a Web site but to a store. We just did something with Google Ad Goggles, with Buick, where you can see a magazine ad, scan and that takes you to an ad site.</p>
<p><strong>8:51 am</strong>: Peter: In-app advertising is a small opportunity, but Google owns it.</p>
<p>Susan: We&#8217;d like to have everyone be an advertiser. We think about having very mobile-specific campaigns.</p>
<p>Our barriers to entry are a lot lower than those at Apple. We offer all the formats like video. We want it to be easy to advertise, we have a lot of systems that measure quality.</p>
<p><strong>8:52 am</strong>: Peter: Who&#8217;s running AdMob day to day? Original management has left.</p>
<p>Susan: We’ve taken different parts of it and integrated it into our advertising and sales organizations. [Former AdMob CEO] Omar [Hamoui] has left for personal reasons, but pretty much most of the staff who joined with AdMob have stayed. The goal is how do we continue to innovate on that platform.</p>
<p>Peter: Do you view the phone differently from a privacy standpoint than on the PC?</p>
<p>Susan: I think the phone is a really personal device in a lot of ways. If you drop your phone or lose it there&#8217;s a moment of panic. On the other hand there&#8217;s a lot of control that users have.</p>

<p><strong>8:57 am</strong>:  Peter: You guys and the rest of the ad industry are telling Washington that they will self-regulate around privacy. FTC says that&#8217;s not going to fly, and they want something like an opt-out browser.</p>
<p>Susan: Google is a consumer brand and people need to be comfortable. If we were just an advertising brand we wouldn&#8217;t have the same concerns. We&#8217;ve always tried to promote transparency and choice among our users. We didn&#8217;t have a cookie on the AdSense network until about a year ago. There were a lot of things we couldn&#8217;t do.</p>
<p><strong>8:58 am</strong>: Susan: We&#8217;re always interested in what&#8217;s being proposed. We&#8217;ll always participate in any discussion around proposals to improve privacy for users.</p>
<p><strong>8:59 am</strong>: Peter: Do you think users really care about this? They&#8217;ll say they care if you ask them. Practically, do they really care?</p>
<p>Susan: People care. They also want to have good content. And they want the advertising to be relevant. We see advertising as information, and as long as we can make that information useful, the better it is.</p>
<p><strong>9:01 am</strong>: Susan: We&#8217;ve had ads in Gmail since Gmail first launched. Ads get a bad reputation sometimes because theyr&#8217;e not useful. They&#8217;re not relevant, or slow. If you&#8217;re planning a trip to Hawaii, and see ads that are related to that, that&#8217;s useful information.</p>
<p><strong>9:02 am</strong>: Susan: The moment that our products are not as good, people will go somewhere else.</p>

<p>Peter: So you were employee No. 18; now there are 23,000 employees at Google. Talk about how the culture has changed over time.</p>
<p>Susan: Google is a much bigger company obviously. We&#8217;ve tried to have a lot of different divisions and groups and have given them autonomy. Our display group is run like a separate group within Google.</p>
<p>The secret is to break into groups that are manageable, and give them as much autonomy as possible.</p>
<p><strong>9:05 am</strong>: Peter: What are we to read into the fact that you&#8217;re offering employees bonuses to stay at the company?</p>
<p>Susan: Our employees are really valuable to us. They are basically our business. Google has been doing well. As much as possible we&#8217;re trying to share back with the employees. They will continue to create a lot of value.</p>
<p><strong>9:06 am</strong>: Peter: If you&#8217;re coming to Google as a hot young engineer out of Stanford, what&#8217;s the most compelling thing you can say to bring them on board?</p>
<p>Susan: Google&#8217;s scale and platform. If you have a passion, and want to get things done. [Cites Andy Rubin, and the scale he's working at now vs. when Android was a start-up.] When you do something, it matters.</p>
<p><strong>9:07 am</strong>: Peter: You guys were talking to Groupon. That deal has now gone away. [Asks about integrating companies into the Google culture.]</p>
<p>Susan: Each deal is different and you have to consider how best to integrate them.</p>

<p><strong>9:09 am</strong>: Peter: What&#8217;s the product you&#8217;re most excited about?</p>
<p>Susan: Mobile ads. How can we enable you, when you&#8217;re walking around, to find out the best local offers around? As an advertiser, how can I find out if someone saw my ad and went to a store?</p>
<p>The local market is a huge market, we&#8217;ve always wanted to be in it.</p>
<p><strong>9:09 am</strong>: Now going into Q&#038;A from the audience.</p>
<p><strong>9:13 am</strong>: Q: What do you view as being so hard about local?</p>
<p>Susan: The reason local is hard is because it needs to be simple. For small businesses, they don&#8217;t have a lot of time. You need to create a model that works for them. And it needs to be easy for them to sign up. On the back end, everything needs to just work for them.</p>

<p>And we&#8217;ve just added an exciting new speaker to the already top-drawer list: Daniel Ek, co-founder and CEO of <a href="http://www.spotify.com/int/">Spotify</a>.</p>
<p>For those living under a rock, Ek (pictured here with co-founder Martin Lorentzon) leads one of the most exciting music services on the Web right now.</p>
<p>In fact, the Swedish entrepreneur is shaking up how and where people listen to and consume music.</p>
<p>As MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka&#8211;who will be interviewing Ek onstage&#8211;<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101027/spotifys-real-news-no-news-but-big-bags-of-cash-might-help/">recently wrote</a> of Spotify&#8217;s efforts to bring its hugely popular (and legal) streaming offering to the U.S. market:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>In Europe, where Spotify has been a very big success, listeners can stream an unlimited amount of music, on demand, without ever paying a cent. But in the U.S., rival streaming services like Rhapsody, MOG and Napster generally only offer a very brief trial period of a few days before requiring that a pay wall go up.</p>
<p>For the past two years, Spotify has insisted that free, unlimited streaming is the only way the service will work, because that&#8217;s Spotify&#8217;s most effective marketing technique. Subscribers who do pay up get benefits like ad-free music, and the ability to port their songs to mobile devices like iPhones.</p>
<p>But the labels, most notably Warner Music Group, have insisted that unlimited free streams only serve to strip away their product’s remaining value&#8211;if you can listen for free on Spotify, why would you ever buy another CD or iTunes single?</p></blockquote>
<p>The whole mobile music space is a riveting one to dive into, of course, and we think Ek is the perfect person to help us do so.</p>
<p>Ek will appear Tuesday morning, December 6, but <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong> opens on Monday, December 6, with an evening onstage interview with Google Android majordomo <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101122/googles-android-kingpin-andy-rubin-will-open-d-dive-into-mobile-plus-one-more-surprise/">Andy Rubin</a>.</p>

<p>While everyone is considering whether to brine or deep-fry the turkey this week, <strong>All Things Digital</strong> HQ will be busy with our preparations for <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>.</p>
<p>That includes setting the program, which takes place in two weeks and will open with an evening interview with Google&#8217;s Andy Rubin (pictured here).</p>
<p>As the search giant&#8217;s mobile chief and principal force and creator of its Android operating system, Rubin is responsible for the ongoing development of the major rival to the Apple iPhone.</p>
<p>Many have challenged Android, including a recent jab from Apple CEO Steve Jobs, questioning its overall experience and whether or not it&#8217;s actually open.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Rubin and Android have proven to be a disruptive and fast-growing force in the mobile space, aiming for dominance akin to Microsoft&#8217;s on the desktop.</p>
<p>Ironic? Yes.</p>
<p>Rubin started as an engineer at Apple and later worked at General Magic, where he participated in developing Magic Cap, an operating system and interface for handheld devices. When Magic Cap failed, Rubin joined Artemis Research, founded by Steve Perlman, which became WebTV and was eventually acquired by Microsoft.</p>
<p>After several years, Rubin left to found another smartphone effort called Danger, which was also acquired by Microsoft, in 2008.</p>
<p>Disillusionment with his ouster as CEO of Danger motivated him to found Android, which was later acquired by Google.</p>
<p>Now, it seems Rubin is poised to make good on his first efforts at making a truly smart smartphone ubiquitous.</p>
<p>And he is only one of many of the industry heavyweight speakers at <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>, among them: Dan Hesse, president and CEO of Sprint Nextel; Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of Research in Motion; Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard; Joe Belfiore, vice president of Windows Phone Program Management at Microsoft; Jon Rubinstein of Palm, now owned by Hewlett-Packard; Foursquare CEO and co-founder Dennis Crowley; Google advertising czar Susan Wojcicki; and Glenn Lurie, president of Emerging Devices for AT&#038;T.</p>

<p>Can Google&#8217;s Android keep surging without fatally fragmenting? Can Research in Motion get back its mojo? Can Palm be revived inside the Hewlett-Packard monolith? Can Microsoft resuscitate its mobile business? Will local apps and mobile Web sites fight to the death or co-exist? Is the Apple iPad a fluke or will tablets spread like wildfire, threatening laptops?</p>
<p>And what will it matter without better networks, must-have software and a viable advertising model?</p>
<p>These are some of the questions we hope to explore with top mobile industry leaders at the first new edition of our <strong>D</strong>, conference, to take place December 6th and 7th in San Francisco.</p>
<p>While our main <strong>D</strong> event, which will continue to occur each year in the late spring, takes a wide view of technology and digital media, this new, shorter confab, called <strong>D: Dive Into Mobile</strong>, is focused on the most dynamic area of tech&#8211;mobile devices and all of the content, apps, social networking and commerce that they support.</p>
<p>Answering all these questions is a strong lineup of leaders in the mobile sector, including Andy Rubin, who runs the surging Android platform at Google; Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO of RIM and the father of the BlackBerry; and Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint, the wireless carrier that leads in the race to faster 4G networks.</p>
<p>In addition, we&#8217;ll be hearing from Jon Rubinstein, who heads Palm; Joe Belfiore, product manager for the new Windows Phone 7; Dennis Crowley, CEO of Foursquare; Mike McCue, CEO of Flipboard; Glenn Lurie, who handles the iPhone and other cutting-edge devices for AT&#038;T; and Susan Wojcicki, the advertising center square at Google.	</p>
<p>We&#8217;re excited to be doing a deep dive into an exciting topic, using our tried-and-tested technique from eight years of <strong>D</strong> conferences: No canned speeches, no slides, no large panels&#8211;just unrehearsed journalistic interviews on stage, sprinkled with a few demos of interesting new products. </p>

<p>With the news that a <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100820/google-founders-sergey-brin-and-larry-page-get-feature-film-treatment">Hollywood production company</a> is working on a movie about Google, based on the nonfiction book <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091112/author-ken-auletta-talks-about-google-and-its-lack-of-emotional-intelligence">&#8220;Googled: The End of the World as We Know It&#8221;</a> by Ken Auletta, BoomTown has been noodling on which actors would be good to cast in the various roles of the top players.</p>
<p>While the Google film isn&#8217;t as juicy as the film about Facebook&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100625/viral-video-scary-teaser-trailer-makes-upcoming-facebook-movie-seem-like-a-slasher-film/">&#8220;The Social Network,&#8221;</a> coming out this fall (and, par for the course, the social networking site beats the search giant to the big screen!)&#8211;there is plenty of opportunity to bring a little glamour to the Googleplex.</p>
<p>While not a casting director by trade, but having actually covered the Google (GOOG) geeks off and on since its earliest days, I feel that I might have nailed the casting, below, for a smattering of the more-visible execs from the company, then and now.</p>
<p>I could not get to everyone&#8211;no Silicon Valley frenemies at Apple (AAPL), no VCs, no giant parade of former Googlers now at Facebook&#8211;but please feel free to add your own suggestions.</p>

Now, less than a week later, the search sovereign has closed the deal.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe that mobile advertising can play a significant role in every single marketing campaign. We’re passionate about the unlimited possibilities in this space,&#8221; Susan Wojcicki, Google vice president of product management, said in a celebratory blog post. &#8220;Today, with AdMob, our work to make them a reality begins.&#8221;</p>
<p>And what a circuitous route it was to get there. Google (GOOG) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091109/google-acquires-admob-for-750-million-in-stock-the-press-release/">announced plans to buy AdMob</a> last fall, but the acquisition was quickly hamstrung by a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100503/close-encounters-of-the-regulatory-kind-admob-google-braces-for-the-worst/">grueling regulatory review</a>.</p>

<p>BoomTown liveblogged Google&#8217;s earnings call this afternoon.</p>
<p>Earlier today, Google (GOOG) beat Wall Street&#8217;s expectations in its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100415/google-beats-wall-street-expectations-but-what-are-its-expectations-going-forward/">first-quarter earnings</a>, signaling that online advertising spending is back on track.</p>
<p>Here we go:</p>
<p><strong>1:30 pm PT:</strong> Investor lady went over investor stuff. <em>Zzzz.</em></p>
<p><strong>1:33 pm:</strong> First up: Patrick Pichette, CFO of Google, whose delightful French accent livened up what was an almost entirely newsless event.</p>
<p>In fact, it turned out that the biggest news was changes in how Google presents its earnings calls going forward: No more CEO Eric Schmidt!</p>
<p>Instead, it will be Pichette from here on out, along with sidekick and head products dude Jonathan Rosenberg. Who was not around today, so top Google execs Susan Wojcicki and Jeff Huber filled in.</p>
<p>Also making an appearance, Nikesh Arora, president of Global Sales Operations and Business Development.</p>
<p>Thus, a parade of Google execs replaced Schmidt&#8211;all of whom said as little as he used to!</p>
<p>Pichette went through the numbers&#8211;lots and lots of them.</p>
<p>&#8220;Very strong performance, across the board, in terms of revenue,&#8221; he concluded.</p>
<p><strong>1:44 pm:</strong> Next up, Wojcicki&#8211;fun fact about the VP of Product Management: Google was started in her garage&#8211;talking about improvements to ad search results.</p>
<p>They are going to get fat and detailed, apparently, with all kinds of stuff attached to them.</p>
<p>&#8220;The idea is for them to be more useful and therefore more high performing,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>In display, Wojcicki said there was &#8220;very strong momentum.&#8221; More DoubleClick integration, more analytics.</p>
<p>Mobile: &#8220;Doing very well.&#8221; (I look forward to the first analyst question about its regulatory approval problem with Google&#8217;s $750 million AdMob acquisition.)</p>
<p>There will be an ability to &#8220;call through&#8221; on ads in smartphones, which sounds kind of cool.</p>
<p><strong>1:51 pm:</strong> Next, it was Huber&#8217;s turn. He is SVP of Engineering.</p>
<p>He started with mobile and geolocation features Google is working on, some of which sounded a bit stalkerish. To the all-seeing eye of Google, they are fabulous, of course.</p>
<p>Its Android and Chrome operating systems are growing, Huber said, noting that there are now 34 Android devices.</p>
<p>Take <em>that</em>, Apple!&#8211;which has but one (which is doing pretty well on its own, Huber declined to add).</p>
<p><strong>1:55 pm</strong>: Arora joined the call with the others for Q&#038;A.</p>
<p>Questions about international advertising. All was well, said both Pichette and Arora.</p>
<p>Next question was about the percentage of revenue from enterprise and mobile. Also what up with Nexus One?</p>
<p>Pichette was not saying, of course, as that information would be useful.</p>
<p>Also no data on the profits of Nexus one, which Pichette noted was indeed profitable. But Google wasn&#8217;t saying how much! More non-news.</p>
<p>Finally, a good question about whether Google will remain on Apple (AAPL) products&#8211;given growing corporate rivalry between the two&#8211;and why the heck Schmidt is not on the call anymore and whether there is more to it.</p>
<p>Pichette became slightly agitated about the CEO question.</p>
<p>Eric has been <em>everywhere</em>! Abu Dhabi! Washington, D.C.! Jetting around on the GooglePlane like it was nobody&#8217;s business!</p>
<p>&#8220;It does not mean that Eric is not available,&#8221; said Pichette, explaining that the move is simply a question of &#8220;streamlining.&#8221;</p>
<p>Huber declined to comment about Apple, of course!</p>
<p>But, blood in the water: What&#8217;s up with Facebook competition?</p>
<p>This is a true oucher for Google internally, with execs quite concerned about the social networking site&#8217;s growth, even if Huber did not admit it and called it &#8220;not a significant issue.&#8221;</p>
<p>Translation: It&#8217;s significant.</p>
<p><strong>2:04 pm</strong> Back to the sleepy questions on marketing and how the company feels about upcoming quarters compared with previous ones.</p>
<p>Hey, the colorful letters of Google and Googley goodness are just not cutting it anymore! You need some pretty ads! You have to promote! After all, Google has actual products now, like the Nexus One.</p>
<p>The next questions were on the number of Nexus One phones sold and, finally, on China.</p>
<p>Huber was not disclosing! If there were a badillion devices sold, you know he would, of course.</p>
<p>Pichette took the China question.</p>
<p>&#8220;This was a tough situation, but we really think we made the right decision,&#8221; he said, noting that the company is kind of still in China from Hong Kong.</p>
<p>Well, not really, but it <em>was</em> the right decision.</p>
<p><strong>2:10 pm:</strong> Another good question on the News Corp. (NWS) deal and the AdMob situation.</p>
<p>Pichette pointed out the the mobile ad market is &#8220;nascent,&#8221; naturally noting that Apple announced its recently announced iAd network.</p>
<p>In other words, let&#8217;s keep pointing to what Apple is up to to save our bacon with the government.</p>
<p>&#8220;Google wants every partner,&#8221; said Pichette about renewing the deal over MySpace, but added that economics have changed since the first one was done with the then-hot-and-now-not social networking site.</p>
<p>Translation: Don&#8217;t expect a big check, Rupert Murdoch!</p>
<p>More in-the-weeds questions, which provided some insight, but not much.</p>
<p><strong>2:28 pm:</strong> Another China question about whether serving its results from Hong Kong is sustainable.</p>
<p>Yes, said Pichette.</p>
<p>More about search advertising innovations and targeting. Google is all over it, said Wojcicki in many, many, many more words.</p>
<p>This line of questioning continued until someone asked whether the reported tensions between Schmidt and co-founder Sergey Brin over China are behind his absence.</p>
<p>Juicy, but completely <em>ridonkulous</em>.</p>
<p>&#8220;<em>Non</em>,&#8221; laughed Pichette, answering in a jaunty way.</p>
<p>The lack of Schmidt, he added, was not a negative, but part of a review of stuff Google could do better. In fact, it was an innovation!</p>
<p>Mais oui or mais non, it was the most interesting news of the day.</p>
