<p>A new $10 million micro-venture fund, led by former Yahoo top engineering exec Ash Patel&#8211;called Morado Ventures and funded by a group largely made up of ex-Yahoos&#8211;is about to launch, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Expected limited partners in Morado, which means &#8220;purple&#8221; in Spanish, include former Yahoo CEO Terry Semel, former COO Dan Rosensweig and former advertising sales head Greg Coleman. Ex-Yahoo President Sue Decker is also considering investing, said sources.</p>
<p>Purple, of course, is Yahoo&#8217;s color.</p>
<p>Interestingly enough, the fund&#8211;which has not officially closed yet&#8211;is also likely to include Yahoo&#8217;s two founders Jerry Yang and David Filo, both of whom are still at the company.</p>
<p>Both will be limited partners and will not make investment decisions. In addition, Morado has no affiliation with Yahoo.</p>
<p>(Still, BoomTown would love to have been the fly in the room when Yang and Filo told current Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz about it!)</p>
<p>Patel will also be joined at Morado by Mike Marquez of investment advisory firm, Code Advisors, although he will also remain at Code.</p>
<p>Sources said the small fund, which is similar to an angel group, will focus on early-stage start-ups in the Internet consumer arena, as well as in the platform space.</p>

<p>Patel (pictured here)&#8211;a 14-year Yahoo veteran whose last job at the company was as EVP for Product Architecture &#038; Strategy&#8211;certainly has experience in these areas.</p>
<p>He took a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091103/dozen-year-yahoo-tech-veteran-ash-patel-to-take-time-off/">sabbatical from the company</a> last November, but never really returned.</p>
<p>Sources said Patel has been doing some of his own investing since then, but was eager to involve himself with start-ups.</p>
<p>While ironic in many ways&#8211;the kinds of innovative companies that Morado will likely be investing in are just those that have put the slower-moving Yahoo in just the situation it finds itself in today&#8211;it&#8217;s a great idea for a fund run by longtime operating execs.</p>
<p>And while many execs from a variety of Silicon Valley companies have become VCs, angel investors and such, this gathering of former execs from the same company is definitely one to watch.</p>
<p>(Plus, BoomTown is guessing the parties will be fun too.)</p>

<p>Sorry, folks, but&#8211;despite reports&#8211;Yahoo will not be unveiling another new organizational structure this week.</p>
<p>In actuality, the beleaguered Internet giant is just cleaning up from last week&#8217;s shake-up&#8211;in which it announced that a chunk of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole/">top media and sales leadership was leaving</a>&#8211;as well as settling in new hires made in recent months by its relatively new product head, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100419/yahoo-confirms-former-microsoft-exec-blake-irving-hired-as-chief-product-officer">Blake Irving</a>.</p>
<p>In fact, those changes in Irving&#8217;s unit have resulted in the departure of two more execs. That would be former SVP of Media Products and Solutions Jeff Kinder and SVP for Cloud Computing Shelton Shugar, who are on their way out.</p>
<p>Kinder actually left his job many weeks ago and was offered the chance to find another within Yahoo (YHOO), although sources said he has now definitely decided to leave the company on his own.</p>
<p>CEO Carol Bartz held a meeting Friday with senior leadership to go over the situation and to assure management that changes to come would stabilize the company going forward.</p>
<p>To be sure, Yahoo needs some kind of reassurance and fast.</p>
<p>BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100929/exclusive-major-meltdown-at-yahoo-as-more-top-execs-to-depart-including-u-s-head-hilary-schneider/">broke the news last week</a> that U.S. head Hilary Schneider was departing the company (see her goodbye memo below), along with U.S. Audience head David Ko and SVP of Media Jimmy Pitaro.</p>
<p>Pitaro has since landed a big job as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101003/yahoos-jimmy-pitaro-lands-digital-co-president-job-at-disney-with-playdoms-john-pleasants/">co-president of the Internet unit of Disney</a> (DIS).</p>
<p>The overall corporate turmoil has put more scrutiny on Bartz. For two years, she has been trying to turn around the company, with only a modicum of success.</p>
<p>While Bartz did strike a search and online advertising partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) to better battle Google (GOOG), she has not <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100720/liveblogging-yahoos-second-quarter-earnings-call-how-do-you-solve-a-problem-like-flat-revenue">goosed flat revenue</a> nor been able to boost <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100630/as-its-stock-languishes-yahoo-does-a-buyback-to-juice-shares">Yahoo&#8217;s moribund stock</a>.</p>
<p>Perhaps more critically, she has not stopped the steady exodus of talent, especially of more senior execs.</p>
<p>Departures in the last six months include U.S. advertising sales head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">Joanne Bradford</a>, Integrated Consumer Experiences SVP <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100528/exclusive-yahoo-front-page-head-tapan-bhat-leaves-yahoo">Tapan Bhat</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100408/confirmed-yahoo-cto-and-chief-product-officer-balogh-to-leave-company">CTO Ari Balogh</a>, as well as the heads of its <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100827/exclusive-yahoo-social-platforms-head-sample-departs-for-ebay">social platform</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100823/exclusive-yahoos-communications-head-jason-titus-departs">communications product</a> units.</p>
<p>But last week&#8217;s departure trifecta of the execs running Yahoo&#8217;s powerful and successful media unit drove the talent drain issue home for many investors and other observers.</p>
<p>While each departure case was different, of course, the leavings have lent a feeling of instability inside and outside the company.</p>

<p>That has happened more quietly over the several months of reshuffling by Irving (pictured here), who came to Yahoo from Microsoft, and which I have reported on here previously several times.</p>
<p>For example, in September, Irving hired Microsoft exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100909/another-microsoft-exec-to-yahoo-joining-other-ex-softies">John Matheny</a> to head the communications products and communities unit.</p>
<p>Previous to that, in July, Irving brought in another old colleague from the software giant&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100708/yahoo-makes-another-major-product-exec-hire-from-microsoft/">Bill Shaughnessy</a>&#8211;as SVP of Product Management.</p>
<p>Thus, Irving&#8211;who is a little too busy traveling to a number of Yahoo product and technology units in Asia and India over the next weeks to announce yet another reorg&#8211;has pretty much already moved his part of the business around, although there are likely to be some more hires to come.</p>
<p>It is not unusual for a new senior exec to do this, of course, but Irving&#8217;s many moves reportedly sparked some tension between him and Schneider.</p>
<p>That might have been moot, since she had decided to leave some months ago, but was asked to stay on by Bartz.</p>
<p>To be sure, in recent months, many sources said that their relationship had become strained too as Yahoo ad sales continue to struggle, and they also disagreed on the company&#8217;s strategic direction.</p>
<p>Still, it should be noted that Schneider is staying on until a new exec is named to replace her.</p>
<p>Whatever the various machinations in the corporate suite at Yahoo, Bartz needs to find a way to convince Wall Street that she still has the ability to complete her much touted turnaround of the Silicon Valley pioneer to a new period of growth and innovation.</p>
<p>How quickly she is doing that will come into sharp relief in a few weeks when Yahoo reports its third-quarter earnings on October 19.</p>
<p>And while executive departures garner a lot of attention, that is the bottom line for Yahoo, the thing most important of all to watch.</p>
<p>Finally, given I love a good internal memo, here is, belatedly, the email that Schneider sent to her staff last week about her leaving:</p>

<p>I&#8217;m sure by now you&#8217;ve all had a chance to read Carol&#8217;s note, and know that I made the decision to move on to the next stage of my career. When I joined Yahoo! four years ago, I knew it would be an amazing and rich experience&#8230;and it has exceeded every expectation. Our consumers look to Yahoo! as they navigate their lives, our advertisers look to Yahoo! for leadership, and publisher looks to Yahoo! for our amazing scale and reach. Our team, however, is our secret weapon!</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the search for my successor is under way and I will continue to lead our team until we make the transition.</p>
<p>Additionally. David Ko, SVP of Audience and Mobile, and Jimmy Pitaro, VP of North America Media, have decided to leave Yahoo! David and Jimmy are amazing leaders and we will miss them. Yahoo!&#8217;s leadership positions in Sports, News, Entertainment, Finance and Mobile are their legacy that we have to proudly continue.</p>
<p>Raymond Stern will be the SVP of North America Audience and will be responsible for the Audience teams. Raymond has been an integral part of Americas leadership team as the SVP of Business Development and Partnerships. Before joining Yahoo! a year ago, he held a wide range of business leadership positions, including more than 10 years as a Partner the Boston Consulting Group where he ran the Technology and Media Practice on the west coast. He also held senior leadership roles at Intuit, including CMO.</p>
<p>Raymond will immediately start diving in to the Audience business, and David and Jimmy are committed to working with Raymond through the transition. Right now, Raymond will continue overseeing the business development and partnership teams while we think through the best structure for these teams moving forward.</p>
<p>I know that transitions can create swirl&#8211;but our customers, both consumer and marketers, are looking to us for continued leadership&#8230;and I know we can deliver this.</p>
<p>You are Yahoo!&#8217;s magic, and I thank you for your tremendous commitment, leadership, and support.</p>

<p>As promised, Kara began BoomTown this week with another <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100525/blast-from-the-d-past-apples-steve-jobs-at-d5-in-2007/">Steve Jobs blast from the past</a>, this time at D5. It has all been a big countdown to Steve&#8217;s upcoming interview live on stage at <strong>D8</strong> this coming Tuesday. It&#8217;s not <em>just</em> Jobs though. Head on over to the <a href="http://d8.allthingsd.com/"><strong>D8 site</strong></a> to see the full roster of tech execs in line for Kara and Walt&#8217;s hot seat. Midweek, Kara got a little video time with Keith Lee, CEO of Booyah games, maker of MyTown, the check-in-based social game that, with two million users, dwarfs Foursquare. The start-up just completed a healthy <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100526/booyah-ceo-keith-lee-talks-about-social-gaming-moolah-and-more-with-accels-jim-breyer-as-sidekick/">round of funding</a> and apparently used the money to buy a giant Princess Leia doll&#8230;watch the video. Kara ended the week on one of her favorite subjects: <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100528/exclusive-yahoo-front-page-head-tapan-bhat-leaves-yahoo/">Who&#8217;s departing this week from Yahoo</a> (YHOO)? Looks like Tapan Bhat, head of the Internet giant&#8217;s front page, has left the building. Kara got the exclusive skinny.</p>
<p>John was at the Digital Daily ticker the moment the big story hit. Let us mark this down in our calenders as the week <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100526/apple-worth-more-than-microsoft/">Apple exceeded Microsoft</a> (MSFT) in market capitalization. How do you top a story like that? Well, John does it by following the saga of the social network editor that everyone love to hate at the moment. John gave a blow-by-blow of the privacy changes that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100526/facebook-new-privacy-settings-an-improvement-over-the-old-which-isnt-saying-much/">Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg</a> laid out for his staff. Verdict? Less bad, maybe. To end the week, John covered some of the expectations around the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100528/ipad-likely-to-outsell-mac-internationally-too/">international release of the iPad</a>. Everyone is watching to see if the tablet outsells the Mac and will then proceed to stump about what that means for Apple (AAPL).</p>
<p>Twitter came in for a landing all over MediaMemo on Monday. Peter opened with a post trying to make sense of its new <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100524/twitters-free-love-era-comes-to-an-end-time-for-developers-and-publishers-to-pay-up/">&#8220;ain&#8217;t no such thing as a free lunch&#8221; profit model</a>. The media shuffle is always in Peter&#8217;s crosshairs, and this week&#8217;s installment was about <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100525/forbes-buys-trueslant/">Forbes buying up True/Slant</a>. Wait&#8230;was that a media company <em>acquiring</em> something? Not selling it off? Peter ended his week with a cautionary tale for all this season&#8217;s commencement speakers: <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100526/if-youre-going-to-plagarize-your-commencement-speech-dont-lift-it-from-youtube/">Don&#8217;t plagiarize your speech</a>. Or, if you do, don&#8217;t steal it from YouTube. Nothing is more humiliating than being exposed virally. </p>
<p>Walt stepped out of the writer&#8217;s chair for Personal Technology this week and gave Geoffrey Fowler a shot at the keyboard. He turned in an insightful piece on the <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20100526/e-bookstores/">complicated world of e-bookstores</a> and some useful advice on how to navigate their ins and outs. </p>

<p>News of the departure came from new Chief Product Officer Blake Irving in an internal email titled &#8220;Busy Week&#8221; that highlighted the Yahoo (YHOO) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100526/yahoo-investor-day-exec-presentations-in-living-color-collect-them-all/">investor day that took place yesterday</a>.</p>
<p>Buried at the end of the memo was a paragraph noting that &#8220;there&#8217;s always a downside to a productive week&#8221; and that Bhat had decided to leave the company.</p>
<p>Bhat&#8217;s team will report to Yahoo exec Jeff Kinder until a replacement is found. It is not clear what Bhat&#8217;s plans are.</p>
<p>Bhat joins a number of top execs who have recently clocked out of Yahoo of late, such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100315/exclusive-yahoos-top-ad-money-maker-bradford-leaving-for-new-job-at-demand-media/">U.S. advertising head Joanne Bradford</a>.</p>
<p>Bhat was in charge of a range of products at Yahoo, most importantly, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots/">most recent redesign of its powerful homepage</a> a year ago.</p>
<p>Yahoo has since confirmed the departure.</p>
<p>&#8220;Tapan Bhat, SVP, Integrated Consumer Experiences, has decided to leave Yahoo!. Tapan has been an integral leader within the Products organization since joining Yahoo! more than five years ago and we value his many contributions and wish him well. His last day will be June 15.&#8221;</p>
<p>And from Bhat:</p>
<p>&#8220;Leaving Yahoo! has been a difficult decision to make because I&#8217;m incredibly proud of the work that&#8217;s been accomplished by my teams over the last five years, particularly related to the Yahoo! homepage, My Yahoo!, our content optimization engine and most recently, our Mobile and iPad apps. I&#8217;m looking forward to new challenges that lie ahead and am confident that I&#8217;m leaving Yahoo! on the right path, and with the right leadership in place.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to some sources inside and outside of Yahoo, Bhat has clashed with CEO Carol Bartz at times and has long been considering a new move.</p>

<p>That would be Apple (AAPL), of course, with a big dollop of Twitter and Facebook tossed in, and finished off with a generous sprinkling of Microsoft&#8217;s new Bing search service.</p>

<p>The launch is the first major upgrade of the MSN main page in&#8211;if you can believe it&#8211;a decade, part of an overhaul that the software giant has been doing throughout its money-losing online services division.</p>
<p>That has included the <a href="http://d7.allthingsd.com/20090528/d7-interview-steve-ballmer/">launch of Bing in May</a>, which has been a success for Microsoft, adding a small amount of search market share and, more importantly, some much needed respect to its long-beleaguered consumer Web efforts.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s online execs are trying to keep up the innovation momentum with the new MSN redesign and&#8211;as you can see below from the various screenshots&#8211;it is a major shift for the portal site.</p>
<p>Together, MSN and Windows Live have about 100 million unique monthly visitors, putting Microsoft typically third behind Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>The company hopes to do better with a fresher MSN, which is clearly aimed, first and foremost, at clearing up the clutter and link-heavy old MSN homepage.</p>
<p>MSN execs said the new main page has about half the &#8220;blue&#8221; links.</p>

<p>The top of the new page features a big image module, with inline video and drastically reduced topic areas&#8211;as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090717/exclusive-msn-preps-for-major-renovation-focusing-on-five-areas-as-it-does-less-better">BoomTown has previously reported</a>&#8211;limited to news, sports, entertainment, money and lifestyle.</p>

<p>Under that is a more customizable news module, to which feature tabs can also be added, such as for the World Series or&#8211;<em>prolonged sigh</em>&#8211;Balloon Boy coverage.</p>
<p>On the bottom left is a much-goosed local module that resolves to beefed-up local sites, which is right next another section featuring Bing top searches.</p>
<p>Bing is present in every part of the site now, with Microsoft stressing it and using its structured data to improve the consumer experience.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s important for Bing search too, since MSN provides 45 percent of its traffic.</p>
<p>Communications modules are to the right, midpage and on the bottom.</p>
<p>Unlike AOL and Yahoo, which have added the ability to put third-party email on their homepages, only Hotmail is now available on the new MSN, although this is likely to change soon.</p>
<p>But perhaps the design element that will garner the most attention is the prominent placement of both Twitter and Facebook tabs in the bottom communications module, right next to one for Windows Live.</p>
<p>This allows users to update their status and get instant access to the status of friends and followers.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to cut the clutter, while also giving users one convenient place to find what they need quickly,&#8221; said Scott Moore, executive producer of MSN in the U.S., its most important market, in an interview earlier today with me.</p>
<p>&#8220;People are overloaded with information and they wanted us to fix that, even if the service is not ours.&#8221;</p>
<p>The focus on Facebook and Twitter was simply due to intense user interest in the popular social networking sites.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook has popped and Twitter was really growing,&#8221; said Moore, who noted that there was the possibility of adding other third-party apps in the future.</p>
<p>A heavy emphasis on apps was a key <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-finally-rolls-out-new-home-page-to-the-masses-and-drum-roll-its-good-plus-screen-shots/">strategy of Yahoo&#8217;s homepage redesign</a>, officially launched in late July, which SVP Tapan Bhat touted at an meeting with analysts last week as having increased page views and engagement.</p>
<p>Advertising on the page is perhaps the most conservative part, with units that remain largely as before.</p>
<p>The new MSN homepage will begin rolling out now, eventually reaching about 10 percent of users by early next year. After that, it is expected to become widely available to U.S. customers and then go worldwide.</p>

<p>Longtime Yahoo tech leader Ash Patel is taking some time off until early 2010.</p>
<p>Yahoo (YHOO) confirmed the break to BoomTown.</p>
<p>In recent days, many inside the company had mistakenly thought the 44-year-old EVP for Product Architecture &#038; Strategy was departing the company for good.</p>
<p>Actually, it&#8217;s more of a sabbatical for Patel (pictured here). But it could turn out Patel will not come back from it at all.</p>
<p>For now, Yahoo is saying he will.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ash will be taking some well-deserved time off  to spend time with his family,&#8221; said Yahoo in a statement to me. &#8220;He will be returning to Yahoo! in early 2010.&#8221;</p>
<p>In his latest of many jobs at Yahoo, where he has been employed since 1996, Patel works with its products organization, run by CTO and EVP of Products Ari Balogh, &#8220;to drive the development of a comprehensive product strategy, as well as potential strategic deals, helping to evolve and evaluate its audience product and technology strategy.&#8221;</p>
<p>It&#8217;s one of many leadership positions Patel has had at Yahoo, as the company has reorganized many times over the years, including as EVP of its Audience Products Division, EVP of Platforms and Infrastructure, SVP of Platform Engineering and chief product officer.</p>
<p>He also played a key role as architect of several major Yahoo products, such as MyYahoo!, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! Chat and many others.</p>
<p>In fact, Patel <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080625/yahoo-reorg-will-be-announced-thursday/">ended up in a major exec role in a reorg</a> that former Yahoo CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang did in the summer of 2008.</p>
<p>But the appointment of Patel to head the new Global Products group was greeted with some internal dissent, since many were pushing for faster change and new management at the Silicon Valley icon.</p>
<p>Yang was said to have insisted that Patel remain on as planned. He reported directly to President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>Patel stayed on after new CEO Carol Bartz got the top job in January, which was the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/whither-ash-patel-can-longtime-yahoos-learn-new-tricks/">subject of much interest among longtime Yahoo staff</a>, since he has been one of the few true Yahoo veterans left in a high-ranking role.</p>
<p>In <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090226/new-yahoo-management-structure-the-entire-memo/">another reorg in late February</a>, this time by Bartz, Patel got his latest title and was placed under Balogh.</p>

<p>Unless I&#8217;m told otherwise, I&#8217;m only going to do this once. But for the record, Yahoo is going with the following spelling for its new slogan: &#8220;It Starts With Y!ou.&#8221; I don&#8217;t think that&#8217;s going to fly with consumers or copy editors, but we&#8217;ll see.</p>
<p>Also undetermined: Whether there will be any news unveiled at Yahoo&#8217;s press conference to roll out said slogan. But I&#8217;ll be here for you just in case. And in the meantime, you can find glimpses of the coming campaign at the bottom of this post.</p>
<p>The event begins: Boilerplate intro remarks from Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Carol Bartz, followed by CMO Elisa Steele. Steele shows off a Venn diagram that shows the intersection of &#8220;my world&#8221; and &#8220;the world.&#8221; Yahoo, apparently, is that intersection. &#8220;That&#8217;s where the yodel is.&#8221;</p>
<p>Steele reminds us that this is Yahoo&#8217;s first global marketing campaign. That&#8217;s old hat for Microsoft (MSFT) and something Google (GOOG) has never done. Ad campaigns will roll out in 10 countries, branding campaign will be in all territories.</p>
<p>Steele runs through some imagery that will be used in campaign. Yahoo users, apparently, comprise many races and creeds. But all of them are buff and/or skinny. Unless they&#8217;re pregnant. A video ad, meanwhile features an upgraded yodel.</p>
<p>OK. Time for Q&amp;A:</p>
<p>Onstage: Bartz; Steele; EVP Hilary Schneider; Tapan Bhat, SVP Integrated Consumer Experiences; Penny Baldwin, SVP Global Integrated Marketing and Brand Management.</p>
<p><strong>What&#8217;s the budget for the campaign?</strong></p>
<p>Steele: &#8220;Over $100 million.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Status of ad market? Also, what <em>won&#8217;t</em> you sell?</strong></p>
<p>Schneider: Starting to see a stabilization. &#8220;Wouldn&#8217;t go so far as to say as we&#8217;re seeing a full recovery.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bartz: We&#8217;re still &#8220;bumping along the bottom.&#8221; Regarding sales, she dodges/reframes the question, talking about &#8220;focus&#8221; instead. &#8220;We&#8217;re just revisiting everything.&#8221; Is there anything you won&#8217;t sell? &#8220;Of course.&#8221; But no specifics. Will improve photo, video, &#8220;much, much better email.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Please talk about the launch of Google Ad Exchange and its threat to you.</strong></p>
<p>Schneider: &#8220;The reality is that the display marketplace is fragmented.&#8221; Our exchange (Right Media) is biggest, but it&#8217;s intuitive that there will be other exchanges. &#8220;We welcome Google.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Why do a relaunch at all? Are consumers actually unhappy, or is it just advertisers and press and investors carping?</strong></p>
<p>Bartz: &#8220;Advertisers follow consumers&#8221; and we need to &#8220;build circulation.&#8221; By doing this approach, &#8220;we get really good micro-insights for our advertisers.&#8221; She doesn&#8217;t explain how this will happen, though.</p>
<p>Steele: &#8220;Consumers want more from online advertising.&#8221; They&#8217;re asking for it.</p>
<p><strong>What about video plans?</strong></p>
<p>Bartz: &#8220;Video snacks&#8221; are crucial to consumers and advertisers. &#8220;A big emphasis&#8221; inside Yahoo. A &#8220;big cornerstone of our strategy.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>How long will campaign run? How will you measure success?</strong></p>
<p>Steele: It&#8217;s funded for 15 months, and I expect it will run longer than that. Vague answers about management.</p>
<p>Some chat about search, which formally debuts today.</p>
<p><strong>Will there be product-specific ads?</strong></p>
<p>Steele: Launch of the campaign in each market will start with brand, and over time you&#8217;ll see more product ads, as &#8220;people get familiar with Yahoo again.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>One more time: Is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090921/yahoos-adds-zimbra-to-the-garage-sale-as-it-tries-to-shed-what-isnt-you/">Zimbra being shopped</a>?</strong></p>
<p>Bartz: No comment. But &#8220;what I will tell you is that Zimbra technology is very, very important to our mail system, and that&#8217;s one of the prime reasons that Yahoo bought Zimbra when it did&#8230;[but] the technology is already integrated into our system.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>How is this campaign different than other campaigns? You&#8217;ve had a lot of campaigns in the last 15 years.</strong></p>
<p>Steele: I haven&#8217;t been here in past, but I&#8217;ve reviewed every campaign that has been done and this is radically different because it&#8217;s more than a campaign. Carol and Carol&#8217;s staff are all behind the concept of &#8220;you.&#8221; Everyone&#8217;s on board. &#8220;If this was just a marketing campaign or a slogan, then we&#8217;ve really failed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bartz: This should remind you of the past, actually. That&#8217;s not a bad thing. On search: Search has evolved from the &#8220;10 blue links&#8221; days. She views background of search much like an Intel (INTC) chip, which everyone uses. But Dell&#8217;s (DELL) experience with that chip is different than HP&#8217;s (HPQ) experience, etc. Yahoo is stable at 19 percent of search business because users are on Yahoo and they like Yahoo search. &#8220;Yahoo search is great. It&#8217;s not Bing, it&#8217;s Yahoo search&#8230;.What&#8217;s most important is that we drive upstream and provide a great experience, even though the plumbing is down here.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Do users really like to customize their search (premise behind overhauled homepage)?</strong></p>
<p>Bhat: Core group of 15 percent of users really into customization. Most other people say they want that but aren&#8217;t willing to do the work. So we&#8217;re doing incremental customization on the homepage. &#8220;This will be something that keeps growing over time.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Will you be integrating text-messaging and other short messaging services into the homepage?</strong> </p>
<p>Bhat: Yes.</p>
<p><strong>How is the antitrust scrutiny going (with regard to Microsoft search deal)? </strong></p>
<p>Bartz: Just as we predicted. We stand by our original prediction that the deal will close early 2010.</p>
<p><strong>Are we too obsessed about what&#8217;s new here?</strong></p>
<p>Bartz: Yes. &#8220;People just decided to put a cloud over Yahoo&#8217;s head&#8221;&#8230;and decided that if we&#8217;re going to remove the cloud we had to show off something shiny and new. &#8220;If you get out of New York and Silicon Valley, everybody loves Yahoo.&#8221; I travel a lot and everyone loves it. &#8220;I just want to transport you guys out of this cynicism you&#8217;re in&#8230;.Why are you so cynical? Why not be cynical about <em>fricking</em> Google? See&#8230;you got me&#8230;you got me pissed off.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>[Note. Some debate about whether Bartz used "fricking" instead of an actual curse. We'll go to tape later. Update: Apologies (and thanks to Business Insider's Nicholas Carlson, who shared his video with me). Bartz appears to have said "fricking" or "frigging" Google.]</em></p>
<p><em>[Sorry about interregnum there. Cursing got me wound up. Back to real-time.]</em></p>
<p><strong>Where do you want to be in two years?</strong></p>
<p>Bartz: Yahoo is the only site where you when you wake up in the morning and you want to know what&#8217;s going on everywhere about everything, you can find it one place. The company is unified around that spirit, &#8220;not about technology for technology&#8217;s sake, but about what that delivers.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Why doesn&#8217;t Wall Street buy the Yahoo turnaround story even though Google has fared okay during this recession? </strong></p>
<p>Bartz: &#8220;Yahoo and Google are different companies. They are in different businesses&#8230;investors are somewhat like you guys, where they&#8217;re saying &#8216;let&#8217;s wait and see.&#8217;&#8221; About this direct comparison with Google: &#8220;We aren&#8217;t a comparable company. They aren&#8217;t us and we aren&#8217;t them.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>So whom would you like to be compared to?</strong></p>
<p>Bartz: &#8220;Yahoo.&#8221; But the closest analog is AOL, actually. Google is a white page with a search box. We&#8217;re very personal. When you go to our page in India, it feels like India. Relevance is important. Personalization is important. That&#8217;s not Facebook&#8217;s strategy. That&#8217;s not Twitter. &#8220;Not to say we&#8217;re not part of the greater tech sector, and you&#8217;ve got to find some compares.&#8221; But Yahoo is unique. We&#8217;re doing okay with the world side; we have to work on the easy personalization that is the core of our product focus.</p>
<p><strong>Please address the stock sale, Carol.</strong></p>
<p>Bartz: &#8220;I didn&#8217;t sell anything.&#8221; I got restricted stock throughout the year; when it vests, it gets recorded as a sale. &#8220;I haven&#8217;t sold one penny of Yahoo stock. Thanks for asking, because it pissed me off when they said I sold. I wouldn&#8217;t do that.&#8221;</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Although it's not news that Yahoo was readying a new version of its homepage and has spent a lot of time doing so--in fact, it's gone all Handy Manny with a whole lot of test renovations--the Internet giant begins the massive rollout of it tomorrow.

The official launch of what was code-named "Metro," which Yahoo had previously said was coming in the fall, will take place on an opt-in "beta" basis for the hundreds of millions of users in the U.S. and will be extended to France, the U.K. and India later this week.

The change is an important one for Yahoo, since its front page--one of the most trafficked on the Web--is perhaps its most powerful calling card to users and advertisers, as well as to Wall Street.

<p>Although it&#8217;s not news that Yahoo has been readying a new version of its homepage and has spent a lot of time doing so&#8211;in fact, it&#8217;s gone all Handy Manny with a whole lot of test renovations&#8211;the Internet giant begins the massive rollout of it tomorrow.</p>
<p>The official launch of what was code-named &#8220;Metro,&#8221; which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090214/how-is-yahoos-massive-metro-homepage-redesign-going-it-depends-on-who-you-ask/">Yahoo had previously said was coming in the fall</a>, will take place on an opt-in &#8220;beta&#8221; basis for the hundreds of millions of users in the U.S. and will be extended to France, the U.K. and India later this week.</p>
<p>When users log in, they will get a choice&#8211;for now, there will be no forcing it&#8211;to switch over to the new version, which Yahoo&#8217;s Tapan Bhat, SVP of Integrated Consumer Experiences, said in an interview with me today by phone, is the &#8220;the most fundamental change to the homepage ever.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, indeed, the new look is much different, even than previous launch candidates, featuring an almost complete rejiggering of the look and feel of the most important page at Yahoo (YHOO) and one of the most trafficked on the Internet.</p>
<p>The change is an important one for Yahoo, since its front page is perhaps its most powerful calling card to users and advertisers, as well as to Wall Street. Its homepage gets 330 million unique visitors every month.</p>
<p>Yahoo has redone its homepage many times since its founding in the mid-1990s (you can <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">see the various incarnations of it here</a>), but this new design is perhaps the most dramatic.</p>

<p>The most striking change is a prominent left-side &#8220;My Favorites&#8221; area, with 65 specially designed applications that users can customize, including giving a quick hovering glimpse of email, stocks and of third-party sites like Facebook.</p>
<p>Not quite a dashboard or exactly a social networking page, it feels a little as if Yahoo took a browser tab or a toolbar, put it in a vertical format and gave it some great functionality.</p>
<p>Full disclosure: <strong>All Things Digital</strong>, as well as several other Dow Jones news properties, are in its special alphabetical apps gallery, although I had no idea it would be there.</p>

<p>Yahoo also allows users to create such widgets on the fly from most any Web site and they can have up to 36 apps on the homepage.</p>
<p>There is advertising in the boxes that pop up when hovering over these apps, which is a way of dealing with the issue of purposely sending users away from Yahoo rather than keeping them there. It is a much better version of that trap.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to be the center of people&#8217;s lives online and want to do it in an open, innovative way, all while providing a compelling experience,&#8221; said Bhat. &#8220;It marks the beginning of a renaissance of Yahoo, a renaissance where every pixel matters.&#8221;</p>

<p>After looking over the history of Yahoo&#8217;s homepages since 1994 <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090720/yahoo-home-pages-over-the-last-15-years-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-really-ugly/">(see them all here)</a>, it has pretty much told a story of a site with increasingly smaller font sizes and more stuff packed on it.</p>
<p>&#8220;It had nothing to do with the user, but what Yahoo wanted the user to do,&#8221; said Bhat, rather frankly.</p>
<p>Thus, he said, everything going forward will focus on what the user wants, which, he explained, essentially boils down to a &#8220;my world&#8221; and &#8220;the world&#8221; outlook.</p>
<p>In the my-world bucket: Email, favorite Web sites, stock info. In the the-world: General news, search, what&#8217;s hot.</p>
<p>But, unlike its highly customized MyYahoo product, Bhat said that Yahoo wanted to make it easier for users to create a page where &#8220;there is destination for everything you are about in just a click or two.&#8221;</p>
<p>The programmed &#8220;Today&#8221; module remains, although users can indicate which kind of information&#8211;finance, news, entertainment&#8211;gets top billing.</p>
<p>The module is also localized, depending on the user.</p>
<p>&#8220;We wanted to provide broadcast and narrowcast in one place,&#8221; said Bhat.</p>
<p>That includes updating status, right from the homepage, including integration with social networks such as Facebook and MySpace.</p>
<p>But&#8211;in a very big mistake&#8211;there is no ability to update status to the popular microblogging service Twitter on this part of the homepage, as yet. You can make it an app, though, as Twitter can appear in your Yahoo updates.</p>
<p>And there is a big advertising module still on the right, along with a what&#8217;s-hot section. And, finally, there will also soon be complete two-way syncing with mobile devices, said Bhat.</p>
<p>Interestingly, although CEO Carol Bartz has often said internally that she does not like the color purple, which has been the company&#8217;s signature one since its founding, the main page keeps up the violet tradition with a lighter tone.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo&#8217;s color is purple and it is known for that,&#8221; said Bhat (deftly not taking my delicious bait).</p>
<p>As to why it has taken so long to get its front page redone&#8211;it was originally set to debut late last year&#8211;Bhat noted that such a major shift of such a trafficked page was, <em>well</em>, complex.</p>
<p>&#8220;It involves bringing users along and also rewiring everything within Yahoo,&#8221; said Bhat, who gave Bartz credit for turbocharging the effort, since she first arrived at the troubled Silicon Valley icon in January and quickly put the brakes on the planned launch. &#8220;Now, we are looking at Yahoo holistically, all centered around the user.&#8221;</p>
<p>Time will tell if it is a success, but it is certainly a good and even innovative effort, in much the same spirit Microsoft (MSFT) has had with its new Bing search offering.</p>
<p>And while some might complain that it is not cutting-edge enough, it seems just the right amount of rejiggering and open feel for the mass of users it serves.</p>
<p>For Yahoo, at least when it comes to this one, change is indeed good.</p>

<p>There&#8217;s no question Yahoo owes longtime veteran exec Ash Patel a lot, as it has grown into a global Internet behemoth.</p>
<p>Since getting to the company in 1996&#8211;which essentially means he was present at the creation&#8211;Patel (pictured here) has, as the corporate page on its top execs notes, played &#8220;key roles across the company including architecting MyYahoo!, Yahoo! Finance, Yahoo! Messenger, Yahoo! identity and the user database, and many other products that continue to impact millions of Yahoo! users.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now as EVP of the Audience Product Division, he presides over pretty much all of Yahoo&#8217;s well-known consumer products, from its homepage to its email to its search to, more recently, the product development of its media offerings.</p>
<p>But, because of his longevity, vast purview and clear impact on the company, Patel has also become a symbol for many inside Yahoo (YHOO) right now, who mention him most often in the should-he-stay-or-should-he-go-now debates about the future of the company and who should be in charge of that.</p>
<p>Thus, Patel&#8217;s fate is seen as a key indicator of what is to come at the company, especially whether he and it can change with the very fast-changing times. While his love and loyalty to Yahoo are unquestioned, like many at Yahoo, can he be a true agent of change who could upend all he has built?</p>
<p>The big question, of course: Can old Yahoos learn new tricks?</p>
<p>That, of course, is all now up to new CEO Carol Bartz, who is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/more-on-yahoo-reorg-in-process-ari-and-hilary-rule-but-who-is-joel-jones/">busy restructuring the company to her liking</a>, in decisions that are about to come down after only six weeks into her tenure.</p>
<p>Bartz is clearly casting herself as the agent of dramatic change and speed, as she <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/carol-bartz-friday-memos-chick-flicks-the-need-for-speed-and-wow-also-here-comes-the-rerorg/">noted that in a recent memo to staff</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>What does this have to do with the need for speed? Many of the things I just talked about could have and should have been decided earlier but we haven’t been an organization that has embraced the need for speedy decisions, even when they are the tough ones. We can all be part of changing this and getting back to an organization that is fast on its feet.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>With the reorganization in flux, even as big departures occur <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/connected-life-head-marco-boerries-to-leave-yahoo/">(mobile head Marco Boerries today, for example)</a>, it could start to feel like the rapture at Yahoo, as the old ways make way for, <em>well</em>, the unknown.</p>
<p>Right now, it seems Patel might stay, reporting to CTO Ari Balogh, who is about to also get control over all of Yahoo&#8217;s products. Previously, Patel reported directly to outgoing President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>But others are convinced he will go, if not right away in the current upheaval, then soon enough, with Bartz and Balogh on the hunt for a crackerjack new outside product exec to take over and, more importantly, take a fresh look Yahoo&#8217;s many offerings.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s been Patel&#8217;s job for a long time, after a long rise to the top from when he arrived from Oracle (ORCL). He&#8217;s been SVP of platform engineering, chief product officer and EVP of the Platforms and Infrastructure Division, before getting his most recent title in one of Yahoo&#8217;s umpteenth reorgs.</p>
<p>&#8220;Ash is the symbol of old Yahoo, and now he is really actually one of the only ones with longevity in top management,&#8221; said one person at the company. &#8220;What happens to him&#8211;whether he stays and transforms or simply goes&#8211;says a lot about the future of Yahoo.&#8221;</p>

<p><strong>Ari, Ari, Ari!</strong></p>
<p>As <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090223/the-yahoo-management-structure-who-is-in-and-who-is-out/">BoomTown reported earlier this week</a>, it looks like CTO Ari Balogh will be the biggest winner in the management restructuring, getting to ride herd over the entire product organization, both development and technology.</p>
<p>Most interesting is that Audience Product head and longtime Yahoo veteran Ash Patel is still staying&#8211;at this point at least&#8211;and report to Balogh (Patel had previously reported directly to outgoing President Sue Decker).</p>
<p>Many at Yahoo think Patel will eventually leave, even if he is not out in the current set-up.</p>
<p>But, if he stays, Patel will apparently focus more on product architecture, if he does remain, which is kind of the purview of Venkat Panchapakesan, EVP of the Audience Technology Group, who already reports to Balogh.</p>
<p>Superman exec Ari will surely sort it all out!</p>
<p>In this scenario, Front Doors head Tapan Bhat could get more product development responsibility, especially since media product development is being moved centrally under Patel.</p>
<p><strong>Hilary Gets More Stuff</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/09/hilary.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/09/hilary-225x300.jpg" alt="" title="hilary" width="100" height="150" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3549" /></a></p>
<p>As someone perceived internally as a favorite of Decker, U.S. head Hilary Schneider seems to be scoring anyway.</p>
<p>She&#8217;ll run a new U.S. division, with media head Jeff Dossett under her, as well as advertising sales head Joanne Bradford.</p>
<p>Some Yahoos, though, think Bradford could report directly to Bartz, given her purview is the most important part of Yahoo&#8217;s business.</p>
<p>Schneider will also apparently get a much diminished Connected Life unit, which focuses on mobile and other devices, after the departure of its longtime head Marco Boerries.</p>
<p>I posted <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090225/connected-life-head-marco-boerries-to-leave-yahoo/">news of his leaving earlier today</a>, which now means that part of Yahoo will not stand on its own as a separate fiefdom.</p>
<p><strong>Who Is Joel Jones?</strong></p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/3e03524.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2009/02/3e03524.jpg" alt="3e03524" title="3e03524" width="80" height="80" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-10322" /></a></p>
<p>Indeed. Yahoo&#8217;s current VP of corporate strategy and former McKinsey consultant, Joel Jones (pictured here), is one of the nominees to be tapped to be Bartz&#8217;s chief of staff.</p>
<p>In the new, more centralized organization that Bartz is obviously creating, that will be much more than a bag-carrying role, to be sure.</p>
<p>&#8220;Joel is as sharp as they come,&#8221; said one former Yahoo. Sharp enough to help Bartz negotiate with Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer?</p>
<p>No news on a possibly COO for Bartz, but she is getting a chief marketing officer to head up the brand and PR functions. Many are suggesting an exec like Pepsi-Cola North America interactive marketing exec John Vail, as I have previously reported, although Yahoo brand exec Allen Olivo is the internal candidate.</p>
<p>Also apparently staying for now is another Decker favorite, CFO Blake Jorgensen.</p>

<p>On Friday, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/hurricane-carol-bartz-could-announce-major-yahoo-management-reorg-next-week/">BoomTown first reported that new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz is likely to be announcing a sweeping new management structure</a> soon, which can only mean the possibility that some existing top execs are likely to be broomed out, even as some new ones are ushered in.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is going to be a full-scale peanut butter recall,&#8221; joked one exec, referring to the infamous <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080627/a-garlinghouse-memorial-boomtown-decodes-the-infamous-peanut-butter-manifesto/">&#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221;</a> which was sent around the company several years ago by former exec Brad Garlinghouse. It laid bare the problems at Yahoo (YHOO), most especially a decided lack of decision-making and lugubrious levels of managers.</p>
<p>But the reorganization of Yahoo&#8217;s top-heavy management structures&#8211;I once dubbed it the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070928/day-73-the-sleepy-attack-of-the-yahoo-vice-presidents/">&#8220;attack of the Yahoo vice presidents&#8221;</a>&#8211;will be a bit sticky, given all the (slow-)moving parts at Yahoo (YHOO).</p>
<p>Nonetheless, Bartz signaled a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090220/carol-bartz-friday-memos-chick-flicks-the-need-for-speed-and-wow-also-here-comes-the-rerorg/">&#8220;big week&#8221; ahead in one internal memo</a> I obtained, which was sent out Friday.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s to come?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a rough primer, based on talking to numerous sources inside and outside of Yahoo:</p>
<p><strong>The Basics:</strong></p>
<p>In order to start to revive Yahoo, Bartz is likely to impose a more top-down management style on the hopelessly confusing <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090209/will-tough-talking-bartz-reorg-yahoo-soon-and-finally-blue-pill-the-matrix/">&#8220;matrix&#8221; organization now in place</a> at the company.</p>
<p>She has spent the last six weeks touring Yahoo, getting to see a lot of presentations on its many, many products and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090210/bartz-holds-first-exec-offsite-as-the-yahoos-turn-and-twist-in-the-wind/">conducting a whirlwind of meetings with execs</a>.</p>
<p>Broadly, most expect Bartz to severely roll back a variety of previous reorganizations done by former CEO Jerry Yang and outgoing President Sue Decker, in order to impose more centralized control over the place and focus it more narrowly.</p>
<p>Presumably, lattes&#8211;paid for by Yang and co-founder David Filo&#8211;will remain free.</p>
<p><strong>Out With the Old:</strong></p>
<p>There&#8217;s no question that Yahoo is going to see the departure of several top execs, along with the elevation of others.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/4/files//2009/02/aristotle_balogh-5313-final.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/4/files//2009/02/aristotle_balogh-5313-final.jpg" alt="Aristotle Balogh" title="Aristotle Balogh" width="200" height="250" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-10211" /></a></p>
<p>Among those who are more likely to be definitely in, though, is CTO Ari Balogh (pictured here), a relatively recent hire who has been a popular exec within Yahoo.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123532397353742621.html">Wall Street Journal first noted the possible rise of Balogh</a> in a follow-up piece to this column&#8217;s story on the overall reorg over the weekend, noting that he would become head of product.</p>
<p>Presumably, Balogh will be one of the point men on what to do about search, in the should-I-stay-or-should-I-sell-now debate that never seems to end at Yahoo.</p>
<p>One interesting idea floating around Yahoo is that he becomes head of all its products, as well as continuing to run its tech arm.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s a good idea, since Yahoo has desperately needed an empowered leader under Bartz, who focuses like a laser beam on products.</p>
<p>&#8220;It all starts with that,&#8221; said one former exec. &#8220;One single person has to be the champion of what Yahoo makes.&#8221;</p>
<p>But what does that mean for Ash Patel, EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Audience Product Division? Well, the longtime Yahoo veteran could now report to Balogh (he had previously reported to Decker directly) or, presumably, leave.</p>
<p>Patel&#8217;s fate, of course, impacts that of many others, such as Front Doors head Tapan Bhat, who is in charge of a major homepage redesign that Bartz just delayed the launch of to make it better.</p>
<p>Venkat Panchapakesan, EVP of the Audience Technology Group, seems safer, given that he reports to Balogh already and is responsible for the company&#8217;s overall product technology and platform strategy, such as its open efforts.</p>
<p>Also safer than not is General Counsel Michael Callahan, as well as U.S. EVP Hilary Schneider.</p>
<p>But Schneider&#8217;s purview might change a bit if U.S. advertising sales head Joanne Bradford&#8211;who now reports to her&#8211;is elevated to a higher position or if sales is taken out from under Schneider.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not a stretch to imagine Bartz wanting more control of the part of Yahoo that brings in the bucks.</p>
<p>The fate of Connected Life Division EVP Marco Boerries is dicier&#8211;think Yahoo mobile and other devices&#8211;as it is for CFO Blake Jorgensen and David Windley, who heads human resources.</p>
<p>Both Jorgensen and Windley were favored by Decker, which does not necessarily make them goners. But both are in jobs on which Bartz will have to rely much more, so she might want her own choices in place.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/4/files//2009/02/marco_boerries.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/wp-content/blogs.dir/4/files//2009/02/marco_boerries.jpg" alt="marco_boerries" title="marco_boerries" width="250" height="300" class="alignright size-full wp-image-10212" /></a></p>
<p>Boerries (pictured here), a talented but more freewheeling exec under Yang, is another question all together. Already wealthy from selling several companies, the entrepreneurial exec is most often mentioned by sources as someone unlikely to stick around, especially if Bartz tries to rein him in more. (In addition, Boerries has family issues requiring that he spend a lot of time in his native Germany.)</p>
<p>As to the many Yahoo SVPs and VPs? Let&#8217;s just say it is likely there will be many fewer of them, as Bartz cuts, consolidates, simplifies and centralizes divisions more.</p>
<p><strong>In With the New:</strong></p>
<p>One hire that is definitely coming is a new chief of marketing to take over Yahoo&#8217;s brand, as well as its PR function. Yahoo has not had that kind of powerful exec in a long time, and it is more likely Bartz will go for an outside star here.</p>

<p>One outside name skittering around Yahoo for the role is John Vail (pictured here), director of interactive marketing for Pepsi-Cola North America, who knows Yahoo well.</p>
<p>(An obvious internal candidate for the job would be Yahoo&#8217;s Global Brand Marketing SVP, Allen Olivo, who could hit the road if not selected.)</p>
<p>Also a possibility is adding a COO with more Web experience to come in to help Bartz. There are plenty of candidates for that job all over the Internet sector.</p>
<p>But Bartz seems to be the kind of exec who favors flying solo and having key execs report to her to keep a finger on the pulse of a company. She is most definitely not going to have an entourage around her.</p>
<p>In fact, said one person familiar with the situation: &#8220;It&#8217;s long past time for new plumbing, and [Bartz] seems ready to flush a lot out that has long needed to go.&#8221;</p>

<p>Bhat, who is SVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Front Doors, Communities and Network Services, said the company was completing the first phase of its &#8220;bucket testing&#8221; and collecting feedback, but that, &#8220;Bottom line is we&#8217;re getting closer to the final design, but we&#8217;re not quite there yet.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed not, according to several sources at Yahoo (YHOO), who said that the massive underhaul of the homepage has been a much more complex, much dicier effort and was taking a lot longer than expected to launch.</p>

<p>When the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080917/a-first-look-at-the-new-yahoo-homepage-redesign-apps-rule/">redesign&#8211;which is called &#8220;Metro&#8221; internally&#8211;was announced last September</a>, Bhat said the changes would initially impact less than one percent of worldwide users in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and India.</p>
<p>But he also said they would then be rolled out to a wider and wider circle over the next six months. That has not happened, obviously.</p>
<p>Why? One key reason: Some results in limited testing showing actual declines in traffic, both from pointing outward more and also having people stay on the homepage with beefed-up &#8220;one-click&#8221; features.</p>
<p>The biggest issue is openness, which is aggressive in the new design, especially for Yahoo.</p>
<p>But it is a move pushed strongly by former CEO Jerry Yang. The idea is that Yahoo was a &#8220;starting point&#8221; for consumers was one of his key strategies.</p>
<p>That includes adding in lots of widget-like applications, or apps, onto the homepage from outside partners, and many more links to sites all over the Web.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pointing people off Yahoo and they are going,&#8221; said one exec about Yahoo&#8217;s first massive redesign since 2006. &#8220;While being open is a good thing, it also means less traffic inside Yahoo.&#8221;</p>
<p>Said another: &#8220;A lot of us want it to point more to great Yahoo services we offer instead of giving everyone else the benefit of our size.&#8221;</p>
<p>And the results so far, several sources said, have definitely caught the attention of new Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who some say might be considering slowing the wider rollout of the new homepage that insiders said was expected to be well on its way by spring.</p>
<p><span id="more-9825"></span></p>
<p>Delay is, of course, common in massive projects like this, especially in this case, since the Yahoo homepage is a powerful &#8220;firehose&#8221; all over Yahoo and the Web.</p>
<p>When I contacted Bhat earlier this week to ask about the status of the homepage redesign, he would not comment about when it would roll out widely or about results of the testing, or give me access to the redesigned pages.</p>
<p>But he did kindly offer to walk me through the progress so far, next week at Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale.</p>
<p>Then an update from Bhat suddenly appeared last night, in which he outlined that positive and negative feedback from that small number of Yahoo customers who have been using the new homepage.</p>
<p>Apparently, testers love the streamlined look and feel and the apps, and prefer the new page over the current one.</p>
<p>They also want even more apps, though, and think Yahoo should nix the darker color, as well as give easier access to mail and other services.</p>
<p>One assumes that is just a tiny bit of the feedback, especially given how dramatic the changes are.</p>
<p>In a post last fall when the redesign was announced by Bhat, I wrote that Yahoo was &#8220;employing a design that more significantly allows users to customize the starting page in a way that essentially amounts to a kind of My Yahoo-lite for everyone.&#8221;</p>
<p>That meant the ability to get to information and services more quickly, with links to outside email providers, initially from Google (GOOG) and Time Warner (TWX) online unit AOL.</p>
<p>The test design also includes a prominent left-hand vertical bar, with applications from both Yahoo properties and third-party services like eBay (EBAY), which are easy to add and remove.</p>
<p>Eventually, Bhat said at the time, there would be thousands of apps, from Yahoo and also from outside developers.</p>
<p>&#8220;People want broadcast and narrowcast at the same time,&#8221; said Bhat then. &#8220;They want choices, but they also don&#8217;t want to do the work involved [in programming their own homepage].&#8221;</p>
<p>Noting that it was not the dashboard approach of My Yahoo or iGoogle, Bhat added at the time: &#8220;People are time-starved&#8230;so it is important to the user to get to their relevant daily information as quickly as possible without having to click around.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, said several sources at Yahoo who have seen the Metro results so far, by giving them more options, especially outside ones, clicking around is precisely what users do.</p>

<p>As many of you know, we started testing new concepts for the Yahoo! homepage last fall, with the goal of helping to simplify the Web for the more than 300 million people around the world who visit the site each month.</p>
<p>We are wrapping up the first phase of our &#8220;bucket testing&#8221; and have gleaned some great insights from people in the US, UK, France and India who have tried out the new page. We&#8217;ve done a number of things to collect input&#8211;from reading your comments here on Yodel to reviewing online feedback forms and customer care inquires to meeting with many of you in person and online. Bottom line is we’re getting closer to the final design, but we&#8217;re not quite there yet.</p>
<p>Before I share details around what we&#8217;ve learned, I wanted to give a quick recap of some of the functionality we&#8217;ve added over the past few months since just a fraction of you have experienced it firsthand.</p>
<p>Back in September, we introduced a new section called &#8220;My Apps.&#8221; The great part about having apps on your homepage is that you can easily check in and get more done&#8211;from reading and responding to multiple email accounts to browsing local movie listings&#8211;all without leaving the page.</p>
<p>Today, we&#8217;ve enhanced that experience and we&#8217;re testing more than 25 apps that will keep you updated with whatever you want to know. New additions include apps from eBay, Forbes.com, Wired.com and more top brands. We&#8217;ve also beefed up the Sports and Finance apps, for example, providing schedules, team standings, blogs links and more, plus one-click access to your stock portfolios and stock quotes. The best part is that the &#8220;My Apps&#8221; section is now customizable so you can add and remove apps (check out this screenshot) so your homepage reflects what matters most to you.</p>
<p>Heres what we&#8217;ve heard from our testers:</p>
<p>Positive Feedback</p>
<p>    * People are happy with the streamlined look and feel<br />
    * There&#8217;s lots of love for the applications<br />
    * Most testers said they prefer the new homepage over the current homepage</p>
<p>One comment that sums it up nicely:</p>
<p>&#8220;Well&#8211;I was surprised at first at how little change was introduced, and liked that. Now I&#8217;m surprised by how much change actually is packed in, but is more interaction based&#8230;Basically it&#8217;s deceptively different&#8211;looks and feels the same, but much more functionality built in at a new layer.&#8221; &#8211;Thomas</p>
<p>What We&#8217;re Working On</p>
<p>Now that we&#8217;ve got a critical mass of input, we’re translating it into updated versions of the page for ongoing testing. Here are some highlights.</p>
<p>    * The #1 thing we&#8217;re hearing you want is more apps and we&#8217;ll be adding many apps in the coming weeks<br />
    * Most didn&#8217;t like the dark color that we tested initially&#8211;see the screenshot below of the new visual treatments we&#8217;re testing<br />
    * Easier ways to access and preview email and instant messaging accounts are in the works<br />
    * It should be easier to get to other Yahoo! services that you&#8217;ve come to rely upon</p>
<p>Metro test</p>
<p>We don&#8217;t take changes to your homepage lightly and your input is critical. To help our designers and engineers, tell us what else you think we should consider. Is there a killer app that you&#8217;d love to see?</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s a video interview I did yesterday at the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081215/yahoo-opens-its-open-strategy-with-mail-toolbar-my-yahoo-and-media/">San Francisco event where Yahoo finally launched</a> a lot of the new open and social elements that it has long said it was injecting into its most popular products.</p>
<p>BoomTown talked with the key movers of the initiatives: Ash Patel, Yahoo&#8217;s EVP of its Audience Product Division, and Tapan Bhat, its SVP of its Front Doors, Communities and Network Services.</p>

<p>The initiatives Yahoo (YHOO) finally released into the wild have been long in the making, first discussed as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080107/ces-jerry-yang-emails-it-in/">just vaporware by Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang at last year&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show</a> in Las Vegas (see that video below too).</p>
<p>Yahoo also hosted a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080912/yahoo-execs-open-up-to-boomtown-video-in-a-blabfest/">session at its Sunnyvale HQ about its open plans</a> in the fall.</p>
<p>And, after the longest of gestation periods, they arrived yesterday, in an impressive rollout.</p>
<p>The changes include some very deft rejiggering of Yahoo Mail, called a &#8220;smarter inbox,&#8221; with a new dashboard welcome page, easier ways to make connections, more filtered views, updates and third-party apps integrated into the application.</p>
<p>I thought the changes to the mail product were the most interesting, especially given the hundreds of millions of people using the product. It&#8217;s an interesting choice for a social entry point, aiming to give nonsocial-networking types enough of a taste of it without inundating them.</p>
<p>Of particular note were the third-party applications, such as for WordPress and Flickr, that launch nicely right in the email program.</p>
<p>Also cool was one app from Xoopit that surfaces old photos and photo links lost in the musty archives of old emails.</p>
<p>Yahoo also debuted an enhanced version of the homepage (<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080917/a-first-look-at-the-new-yahoo-homepage-redesign-apps-rule/">previously announced in September</a>) and My Yahoo, as well as a new toolbar and socialization elements added to its popular media properties.</p>
<p>It remains to be seen how popular these changes will become, especially since many consumers already have their social-networking lives on Facebook or MySpace.</p>
<p>In addition, both Time Warner (TWX) online unit <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081210/aol-gets-more-social-with-renovation-of-bebo-but-theres-much-more-to-come/">AOL</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081112/microsoft-officially-facebooks-oops-socializes-windows-live-internet-services/">Microsoft</a> (MSFT) have rolled out similar social and open changes to their sites recently, making it super-confusing for everyone.</p>
<p>But, better late than never, I always say, so here&#8217;s Bhat and Patel talking about Yahoo&#8217;s new stuff.</p>

At an event in San Francisco today, <a href="http://ycorpblog.com/2008/12/15/giving-you-the-personal-touch/">the company introduced &#8220;socialized&#8221; upgrades to Yahoo Mail, Toolbar, My Yahoo, Yahoo TV and Yahoo Music</a>. Each service now features social enhancements that essentially transform the experience of using it into one more akin to social networking. Yahoo Mail, for example, now manages your in-box according to your social connections. It&#8217;s also been tricked out with a new social photo browser from Xoopit and a feature that allows you to easily turn a message into a WordPress blog post.</p>
<p>&#8220;By tying together our audience and context, we can have even more relevant experiences,&#8221; said Tapan Bhat, senior vice president of Front Doors and Network Services at Yahoo (YHOO). &#8220;All our properties are going to be socialized&#8230;and fundamentally, it is going to change how information is consumed.&#8221;</p>
<p>The now-socialized Yahoo Mail is to go live today at 1 p.m. PST. My Yahoo, the Yahoo Toolbar, Yahoo TV and Yahoo Music go live later this week.</p>

But it is just this kind of ramped-up blabbery that has many at both companies predicting that a deal will go through, sooner or later, as soon as Time Warner and Yahoo can agree on a price.]]></description>

<p>As has been <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081007/will-yahoo-and-aol-ever-stop-talking-and-make-a-deal-in-related-news-generalissimo-francisco-franco-is-still-dead/">copiously reported here</a> and all over, Yahoo and AOL have been engaged in never-ending talks about a possible deal to merge their flagging Internet businesses.</p>
<p>Now, sources tell me, the circle of executives at both companies interfacing with each other has been widened, for purposes of due diligence.</p>
<p>That chit-chatting includes Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, who has been in New York several times recently [UPDATE: But not yesterday, in a story I had previously linked to here]&#8211;where AOL parent, Time Warner, is located&#8211;to meet once with its CEO, Jeff Bewkes, and see if they can actually complete the merger.</p>
<p>Now, all this frantic activity does not mean a deal will necessarily be struck. In fact, in typical Yahoo style, it is going very slowly and that is never a good thing in dealmaking.</p>
<p>But it is this kind of ramped-up blabbery that has many at both companies predicting&#8211;hoping, really&#8211;that a deal will go through, sooner or later, as soon as Time Warner and Yahoo can agree on a price.</p>
<p>Or, more precisely, a <em>percentage</em>, since <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081002/yahoo-drops-to-1558-a-share-but-microsoft-still-uninterested/">Yahoo&#8217;s stock price has been falling like a particularly sharp knife</a> of late.</p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo does not want Time Warner (TWX) to have any more than 25 percent of the new company in a trade for AOL&#8217;s assets&#8211;although that figure would be slightly more if the media giant throws in some of that &#8220;Harry Potter&#8221;-generated cash into the deal kitty.</p>
<p>Yahoo (YHOO) management, sources said, also think its assets are of significantly better quality than AOL&#8217;s, and it still has that powerful&#8211;although declining&#8211;share in the lucrative search market.</p>
<p>Thus, it does not want to pay the $8 to $10 billion price Time Warner wants, and it should not either. (Here is a <a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/10/jerry-please-don-t-buy-aol-for-8-billion">good analysis on the price issue by Silicon Alley Insider&#8217;s Henry Blodget</a>.)</p>
<p>But Yahoo shares closed yesterday at a troubling $14.58, down 73 cents, or almost five percent.</p>
<p>That means its market valuation also declined by many billion dollars very quickly. It is now at $20.2 billion.</p>
<p>These profound stock drops, said several sources, could spur Yahoo to act before it gets even worse, which is why talks have been more frequent in recent weeks.</p>
<p>While not the best state of mind, panic is always a good motivator, and both companies are surely desperate to turbocharge themselves in the face of tough competition and avoidable management mishaps in recent years.</p>
<p>The hope? That together the pair can do better than they have separately&#8211;by combining their advertising, content and communications assets, which are among the largest in the world.</p>
<p>In addition, the &#8220;new&#8221; Yahoo would be able to make massive cost cuts, including layoffs, under the cover of integration and starting off with a clean slate.</p>
<p>So who would emerge more powerful in a new set-up&#8211;AOL or Yahoo?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a short cheat list:</p>

<p>AOL and Yahoo have a similar range of content assets, with big sites in all the classic categories, like news, financial, sports and lifestyles. Yahoo&#8217;s content head is Scott Moore, while AOL&#8217;s is Bill Wilson (both pictured here, left to right).</p>
<p>As I wrote yesterday, I expect that the more dominant Yahoo will rule, slashing and burning most of the AOL-branded properties, keeping only interesting newer brands like sports blog FanHouse, celeb blog TMZ and the Engadget, Tuaw and JoyStiq tech blogs.</p>
<p>And while former Microsoftie Moore is the likely head of this behemoth, don&#8217;t count on the very adept Wilson, who is known as a skilled corporate player at AOL, to stick around without a big role in this arena.</p>
<p><strong>Communications:</strong></p>
<p>Again, advantage Yahoo, which has bigger calendaring, email and instant messaging assets, an area once overwhelmingly dominated by AOL. That was then, of course.</p>
<p>Still, AOL&#8217;s communications tools are used by a huge audience worldwide and the pair together would be a powerhouse. So much so, in fact, that this might be the one major regulatory hurdle any deal would face.</p>

<p>Again, Yahoo would probably dominate, having just hired well-known former Microsoft exec Joanne Bradford to head up U.S. advertising sales. AOL&#8217;s top ad exec is Lynda Clarizio, a former lawyer who is considered dogged but much less experienced than Bradford. (Both are pictured here, right to left.)</p>
<p>And, Yahoo does have its search ad business, however weakening, and a stronger graphical ad business, even if the sector will be most under siege in the current down economy.</p>
<p>Plus, AOL&#8217;s Advertising.com, while a major ad network, is more of a business subject to bruising competition and squeezed margins.</p>

<p>But AOL has a savvy and voluble exec in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070802/kara-visits-bebo-in-london/">Joanna Shields, who came recently via its Bebo social-networking acquisition</a>. While AOL woefully overpaid for Bebo and got played into thinking that other bidders were more interested than they actually were, it was Shields (pictured here) who essentially did that playing.</p>
<p>Sign her up for a top exec role in the combined company pronto!</p>
<p>In all seriousness, there is room for both in the newco, as both AOL and Yahoo seriously <em>bite</em> in the social-networking space. They will surely need a lot more than Bhat and Shields if they want to become true players in Web 2.0&#8242;s hottest and probably most important trend.</p>
<p><strong>Engineering:</strong></p>
<p>Yahoo. I do not need to explain this, do I?</p>
<p>Okay: AOL has always been incompetent in the technical arena, since its beginning days, compared with Silicon Valley companies like Yahoo.</p>

<p><strong>Management:</strong></p>
<p>Now, it is here that it gets interesting.</p>
<p>Most feel the push by Yang to do an AOL deal&#8211;and make no mistake, it is being pushed by him most of all&#8211;is due to increased pressure from his board, as well as major investors, who have had just about enough of his leadership.</p>

<p>&#8220;There is no way Jerry stays on as CEO in a newco,&#8221; said one source about Yang (pictured here). &#8220;He&#8217;ll be kicked upstairs as chairman, and I will think [President Sue] Decker will also have to go eventually, since there will be a lot of resistance if she is named CEO.&#8221;</p>
<p>But, said other sources, these major management changes will not happen immediately, if at all, as it is too distracting in the wake of a deal and ruins the positive &#8220;story&#8221; that both companies will surely want to spin.</p>
<p>And spin they will! (Go, Tricia! Go, Jill!)</p>

<p>And while he has a reputation for sharkish political skills, especially compared to Yahoo&#8217;s very diplomatic U.S. head, Hilary Schneider, expect AOL President Ron Grant to be an important part of the transition, since he is good&#8211;almost too good&#8211;at cutting costs.</p>
<p>Most expect his boss, AOL CEO Randy Falco, not to be part of the new company, thereby separating him and Grant, who are nicknamed &#8220;Smithers and Burns&#8221; at AOL, after &#8220;The Simpsons&#8221; creepy duo.</p>
<p>Most likely, there will be a search for a top-level CEO to take over the combined company&#8211;someone of the stature of New Corp.&#8217;s No. 2 Peter Chernin or eBay&#8217;s former leader Meg Whitman (except now, she is apparently Sen. John McCain&#8217;s pick for Treasury Secretary, if the Republican Presidential candidate were to win the election).</p>
<p>&#8220;If this has any chance of working out, the board has to push restart on the leadership,&#8221; said one person close to the situation, who notes that this deal is Yang&#8217;s last chance to truly impact the future of the company he co-founded and preserve its legacy. &#8220;Everyone gets that, even Jerry.&#8221;</p>
<p>But I think the idea that Yang would leave if there were to be a merger of Yahoo with AOL is wishful thinking on the part of his critics.</p>
<p>He appears tome to be very committed to seeing his vision of turning around Yahoo through.</p>
<p>And those who have counted him out always seem to be the ones who have been typically wrong, such as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and shareholder activist Carl Icahn.</p>
<p>Because, for all the turmoil at Yahoo, it&#8217;s Yang still calling the shots.</p>

<p>Yahoo will begin testing out versions of its new main homepage to a minuscule number of users starting tomorrow, employing a design that more significantly allows users to customize the starting page in a way that essentially amounts to a kind of My Yahoo-<em>lite</em> for everyone.</p>
<p>The redesign is a huge and complex endeavor. According to comScore&#8217;s July stats, Yahoo (YHOO) has about 82 million daily U.S. visitors to its homepages.</p>
<p>Most of those visitors use the Yahoo main homepage, which is fully programmed by the company.</p>
<p>Making such a shift will also be a big perceptual deal for Yahoo, which needs to prove it has remained current and open, especially compared to faster-growing rivals like Facebook.</p>
<p>Yahoo has been trying to reinvigorate itself of late, after a disastrous takeover battle with Microsoft (MSFT) and a weakening of its business and its stock price.</p>
<p>Because of all this, the Yahoo brand has also doubtlessly been tarnished.</p>
<p>Thus, making a success of its new design is critical, and Yahoo&#8217;s CEO Jerry Yang has been touting the idea that Yahoo must be the &#8220;starting point&#8221; to the Web for users.</p>
<p>To respond to users who want to access information and services more quickly, the new streamlined homepage will be much shorter, be made up of more &#8220;snippets&#8221; and have links to outside email providers (initially, Google and AOL).</p>
<p>Most importantly, the new homepage will prominently feature a left-hand vertical bar, which has applications from both Yahoo properties and third-party services like eBay.</p>
<p>These apps can be added and subtracted easily. Eventually, there will be thousands of apps, from Yahoo and, after vetting, from outside developers.</p>

<p>The changes will initially impact less than one percent of worldwide users in the United States, the United Kingdom, France and India. But they will be rolled out to a wider and wider circle over the next six months.</p>

<p>&#8220;People want broadcast and narrowcast at the same time,&#8221; said Tapan Bhat (pictured here), Yahoo&#8217;s SVP of Front Doors, Communities and Network Services, in an interview with BoomTown. &#8220;They want choices, but they also don&#8217;t want to do the work involved [in programming their own homepage].&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, Yahoo apparently is going to give users both in its first major redesign since 2006, which it has been working on for two years.</p>
<p>The major components of the page will still remain close to the old one, but jazzed up and shifted around.</p>
<p>For example. the apps will be moved into the position where Yahoo services links used to be, and vice versa.</p>
<p>As before, there will be a main information module at the center of the homepage, &#8220;pulse&#8221; and news area on the bottom-right and -left, and search and navigation at the very top.</p>
<p>Bhat said the changes were made after a lot of research of user behavior and also after paying attention to key trends such as the widgetization of applications and the trend toward openness.</p>
<p>The new look is not aimed at the hardcore user, who might want to endlessly tweak the Yahoo homepage, although those options will remain for those who prefer them.</p>
<p>But, Bhat said, more people wanted quick access to things like email without having to launch apps. Instead, users will be able to see it all on the main page.</p>
<p>&#8220;It is not a dashboard approach of My Yahoo or iGoogle,&#8221; he said. &#8220;People are time-starved &#8230; so it is important to the user to get to their relevant daily information as quickly as possible without having to click around.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bhat said the rollout tomorrow will not be final and that Yahoo will keep making changes, depending on reaction.</p>
<p>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want 300 million people opposed to change,&#8221; said Bhat, <a href="http://ycorpblog.com/2008/09/17/testing-testing-a-new-yahoo-com/">who wrote a blog post on the changes here</a>. &#8220;So, we are going to be listening hard.&#8221;</p>

<p>After all, Garlinghouse&#8217;s infamous <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/is-yahoos-peanut-butter-man-toast/">&#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto&#8221;</a> was the key ur-moment that one could point to as the one in which the curtains were pulled back at the troubled Internet company to reveal, well, a very sticky mess.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/images2.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/images2.jpeg" alt="" title="images2" width="89" height="118" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2192" /></a></p>
<p>Garlinghouse (pictured here), who ran communications and communities for Yahoo (YHOO), is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080626/more-on-yahoos-reorg-dietzen-is-garlinghouse-replacement/">set to be replaced in part by Scott Dietzen</a>, who was the president and CTO of Zimbra (and before that CTO of BEA Systems). Yahoo bought the highly innovative open-source email startup <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20070917/yahoo-zimbra/">last fall for $350 million</a>.</p>
<p>(By the way, Dietzen will get only 50%&#8211;communications products and services&#8211;of Garlinghouse&#8217;s job, while Front Door head Tapan Bhat will get communities.)</p>

<p><strong>Brad wrote:</strong> <em>Three and half years ago, I enthusiastically joined Yahoo! The magnitude of the opportunity was only matched by the magnitude of the assets. And an amazing team has been responsible for rebuilding Yahoo!</p>
<p>It has been a profound experience. I am fortunate to have been a part of dramatic change for the Company. And our successes speak for themselves. More users than ever, more engaging than ever and more profitable than ever!</p>
<p>I proudly bleed purple and yellow everyday! And like so many people here, I love this company.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> This is the borderline cultish kissing-up part, before I deliver the coup de nut.</p>
<p>Thus: Blah, blah, blah&#8211;love it! Blah, blah, double blah&#8211;so profound I think I shall weep!</p>
<p>And the nuclear blah, blah, blah&#8211;I pull out the bleeding purple and yellow expression, used way too often at Yahoo, which, when you really think about it, is just gross.</p>
<p><strong>Brad wrote:</strong> <em>But all is not well. Last Thursday&#8217;s NY Times article was a blessing in the disguise of a painful public flogging. While it lacked accurate details, its conclusions rang true, and thus was a much needed wake-up call. But also a call to action. A clear statement with which I, and far too many Yahoos, agreed. And thankfully a reminder. A reminder that the measure of any person is not in how many times he or she falls down&#8211;but rather the spirit and resolve used to get back up. They are all begging for a signal that we recognize and understand our problems, and that we are charting a course for fundamental change. Our current course and speed simply will not get us there. <p>We can&#8217;t simply ask each BU to figure out what they should stop doing. The result will continue to be a non-cohesive strategy. The direction needs to come decisively from the top. We need to place our bets and not second guess. If we believe Media will maximize our ROI&#8211;then let&#8217;s not be bashful about reducing our investment in other areas. We need to make the tough decisions, articulate them and stick with them&#8211;acknowledging that some people (users / partners / employees) will not like it. Change is hard.</p>
<p>2. Restore accountability and clarity of ownership</p>
<p>a) Existing business owners must be held accountable for where we find ourselves today&#8211;heads must roll.</p>
<p>b) We must thoughtfully create senior roles that have holistic accountability for a particular line of business (a variant of a GM structure that will work with Yahoo!&#8217;s new focus).</p>
<p>c) We must redesign our performance and incentive systems.</p>
<p>I believe there are too many BU leaders who have gotten away with unacceptable results and worse&#8211;unacceptable leadership. Too often they (we!) are the worst offenders of the problems outlined here. We must signal to both the employees and to our shareholders that we will hold these leaders (ourselves) accountable and implement change.</p>
<p>By building around a strong and unequivocal GM structure, we will not only empower those leaders, we will eliminate significant overhead throughout our multi-headed matrix. It must be very clear to everyone in the organization who is empowered to make a decision and ownership must be transparent. With that empowerment comes increased accountability&#8211;leaders make decisions, the rest of the company supports those decisions, and the leaders ultimately live/die by the results of those decisions.</p>
<p>My view is that far too often our compensation and rewards are just spreading more peanut butter. We need to be much more aggressive about performance-based compensation. This will only help accelerate our ability to weed out our lowest performers and better reward our hungry, motivated and productive employees.</p>
<p>3. Execute a radical reorganization</p>
<p>a) The current business unit structure must go away.</p>
<p>b) We must dramatically decentralize and eliminate as much of the matrix as possible.</p>
<p>c) We must reduce our headcount by 15% to 20%.</p>
<p>I emphatically believe we simply must eliminate the redundancies we have created and the first step in doing this is by restructuring our organization. We can be more efficient with fewer people and we can get more done, more quickly. We need to return more decision-making to a new set of business units and their leadership. But we can&#8217;t achieve this with baby-step changes. We need to fundamentally rethink how we organize to win.</em></p>
<p><strong>Translation:</strong> In a peanutshell, let&#8217;s be Google (GOOG).</p>

<p>Blow up the matrix. Empower a new generation and model of General Managers to be true general managers. <p>The only issue that arose was over the appointment of Ash Patel to head the new Global Products group. His appointment was greeted with internal dissent, but Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang was said to have insisted that Patel remain on as planned.</p>
<p>Last week, I outlined the sweeping internal changes at Yahoo (YHOO), which will again dramatically change the structure of management.</p>

<p>As we wrote, the new Global Products group will be headed by Patel (pictured here), who is currently EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Platforms and Infrastructure division.</p>
<p>Much of the Network division, which until recently was under the leadership of the <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">now departed Jeff Weiner</a>, will move under Patel, including search, mail, instant messenger, front page, platforms and social networking.</p>
<p>All these products are considered &#8220;global&#8221; properties and products, including divisions run by communications and communities SVP Brad Garlinghouse, former Search SVP Vish Makhijani and Front Door head Tapan Bhat.</p>
<p>While Makhijnai is leaving, Bhat is staying so far and Garlinghouse&#8211;despite previous reports of his imminent departure&#8211;will likely stay on through the summer.</p>
<p>Sources said the prospect of working for Patel is not a welcome one for some Yahoo execs in the old Network division.</p>
<p>Patel has been at Yahoo since 1996, and some do not think his operational style is dynamic enough and claim his division has had problems shipping products.</p>

<p>In the new organization, Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider (pictured here) will get purview over the entire U.S. region.</p>
<p>Schneider will continue to oversee all ad sales and add on the Yahoo Media Group under Scott Moore, who was Weiner&#8217;s other direct report.</p>
<p>That shift will bring together Yahoo&#8217;s vast content properties, like Yahoo Finance, with ad sales and align them more closely.</p>
<p>The rest of the world will be split up between three other regions: Europe, headed by Toby Coppel; Asia, run by Rose Tsou; and emerging markets, headed by Keith Nilsson.</p>
<p>Patel, Schneider and the others all report to Yahoo President Sue Decker.</p>

<p>The reorg was largely run by Decker (pictured here) and top HR execs. Yang was involved but not very visible in the process to top managers.</p>
<p>And all of this reorg might be moot anyway.</p>
<p>Billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn is still pursuing his proxy fight to remove Yahoo&#8217;s board and management, which could come to a head at Yahoo&#8217;s annual meeting on Aug. 1.</p>
<p>And investors are pressing Microsoft (MSFT) to make another proposal to run Yahoo&#8217;s search ad and search businesses, which could include <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080625/could-microsoft-get-control-of-yahoo-without-buying-it-investors-think-so/">the software giant buying a significant stake in Yahoo</a>.</p>
<p>While some think Yang will soon hand over the CEO reins to Decker, increasing numbers of insiders and outside investors are pushing for new management at the top, as Yahoo&#8217;s shares decline and more and more talent takes flight from the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;A fish stinks from the head,&#8221; joked one employee. &#8220;This reorg is change, but what we might need goes higher than this.&#8221;</p>

<p>The group seemingly collapsed after <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">Weiner&#8217;s departure last week</a> in a heap of increasingly messy goodbyes.</p>
<p>Makhijani is out, although it is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/qi-lu-departure-a-blow-mahijani-out-too-garlinghouse-not-quite-yet/">not entirely clear that Garlinghouse is</a> as yet.</p>
<p>Several sources now tell me he is considering staying around through the summer, rather than leaving in a week.</p>
<p>That is, unless a great opportunity opens up for the man who <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/is-yahoos-peanut-butter-man-toast/">penned the infamous &#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto,&#8221;</a> which started Yahoo off on this journey of painful self-discovery.</p>

<p>Which leaves us with the fate of Bhat and Moore.</p>

<p>As I wrote, current plans are to fold the highly likable Bhat (pictured here) and his group into a new one called Global Products, which will be run by Ash Patel, currently EVP of Yahoo’s Platforms and Infrastructure division.</p>
<p>Bhat&#8217;s properties, like MyYahoo, are considered &#8220;global&#8221; and will be managed out of Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif.</p>
<p>But will he stay?</p>
<p>While Bhat is reportedly unsure about the new structure and is considering his options, most expect him to do so, as there could be considerable upside for him even with Yahoo&#8217;s current turmoil.</p>

<p>So too for Moore (pictured here), who runs the Yahoo Media Group, which will be moved under Hilary Schneider, who is currently the Global Partner Solutions EVP.</p>
<p>The new org will bring together Yahoo’s vast content properties, like Yahoo Finance, with ad sales and align them more closely.</p>
<p>Several sources said Moore, a former Microsoft (MSFT) exec, is satisfied about the new arrangement and the prospect of reporting to Schneider.</p>
<p>And if Microsoft does return and try another takeover, he would also likely be set.</p>
<p>But other sources said he also has been scouting out a new start-up venture that could include some significant investors.</p>
<p>Indeed, execs like Moore and Bhat have a truckload of options, in any case.</p>
<p>Why? Because Yahoo&#8217;s President Sue Decker, who is helming the reorg, cannot afford to lose more top execs, placing the pair in the catbird seat.</p>
<p>And, with a lot of Web 2.0 companies in need of some experienced execs, familiar with big Internet companies, the sky might be the limit there too.</p>

<p>Company in crisis? Employees morale plummeting? Shareholders in revolt? Stock slumping? Barbarians at the gate?</p>
<p>The <em>perfect</em> time to get out the Rubik&#8217;s Cube for yet another Yahoo reorganization!</p>
<p>BoomTown now has the outline of the likely sweeping management changes at Yahoo (YHOO), which we reported on earlier this week <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080617/boomtowns-short-list-of-yahoo-ceos-sorry-jerry-but-fortune-favors-the-prepared/">here</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/whos-next-to-go-at-yahoo-as-reorg-looms/">also here</a>, to be announced next week by the troubled Internet company.</p>
<p>The reorg, which will drastically change the structure of management, explains a lot about the spate of recent departures by top execs at the company.</p>
<p>Let&#8217;s just dive in, <em>shall we</em>?</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/ash_patel_thumb.jpg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/ash_patel_thumb.jpg" alt="" title="ash_patel_thumb" width="80" height="110" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2197" /></a></p>
<p>First off, a spanking new Global Products group, which will be headed by Ash Patel (pictured here), who is currently EVP of Yahoo&#8217;s Platforms and Infrastructure division.</p>
<p>Much of the Network division, which until recently was under the leadership of the <a href="http:///kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">now departed Jeff Weiner</a>, will move under Patel, including search, mail, instant messenger, front page, platforms and social networking.</p>
<p>All these products are considered &#8220;global&#8221; properties and products and will be managed out of Yahoo HQ in Sunnyvale, Calif.</p>
<p>That means the fiefdoms of communications and communities SVP Brad Garlinghouse, Search SVP Vish Makhijani and Front Door head Tapan Bhat will move into Global Products.</p>
<p>Which would explain why <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/qi-lu-departure-a-blow-mahijani-out-too-garlinghouse-not-quite-yet/">Makhijani is now headed out the door and Garlinghouse is on the fence about his own departure</a>.</p>
<p>Bhat is also reportedly unsure about the new structure and is considering his options.</p>
<p>Unlike Qi Lu, Yahoo&#8217;s EVP of Search and Advertising Technology, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080619/whos-next-to-go-at-yahoo-as-reorg-looms/">who is also leaving and is considered a tech rock star at Yahoo</a>, the prospect of working for Patel is not a welcome one for some Yahoo execs in the old Network division.</p>
<p>Patel has been at Yahoo since 1996, which makes him one of the oldest of old guards at the company.</p>
<p>&#8220;No one wants to report up through him,&#8221; said one Yahoo exec. &#8220;He&#8217;s a Yahoo lifer and not the kind of dynamic leader we need.&#8221;</p>

<p>More welcome&#8211;although not by all&#8211;is likely to be the move to give Global Partner Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider (pictured here) purview over the entire U.S. region.</p>
<p>She will be Patel&#8217;s peer in the new organization and both will report directly to Yahoo President Sue Decker.</p>
<p>Schneider&#8217;s arena will include all of ad sales and also the Yahoo Media Group under Scott Moore, who was Weiner&#8217;s other direct report.</p>
<p>That shift will bring together Yahoo&#8217;s vast content properties, like Yahoo Finance, with ad sales and align them more closely.</p>
<p>In addition, some other consumer-facing products will move to Moore under Schneider.</p>
<p>In the last reorganization, Moore got autos and real estate, as well as all entertainment and sports.</p>
<p>Several sources said Moore, a former Microsoft (MSFT) exec, is satisfied about the new arrangement and the prospect of reporting to Schneider.</p>
<p>But other sources said he also has been scouting out a new start-up venture that could include some significant investors.</p>
<p>In addition, some execs are worried about the likable Schneider&#8217;s ability to handle such a large job.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is lot on her plate and, while she is good at the business side, she is not a products person,&#8221; said one in a common refrain about her.</p>
<p>The rest of the world will be split up between three other regions: Europe, headed by Toby Coppel; Asia, run by Rose Tsou; and emerging markets, headed by Keith Nilsson.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s relatively new CTO Ari Balogh will take over a lot of Lu&#8217;s team with various engineering execs under him.</p>

<p>Top managers, most of whom had little input in the reorg, which was run by Decker (pictured here) and top HR execs, are reeling from the changes being presented with what most say is little consultation.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am not sure right now, with all this drama and all this tension from Microsoft&#8217;s failed takeover and the rest of it, why we have to do this,&#8221; said another exec. &#8220;This feels crazy.&#8221;</p>
<p>Maybe not so much. Yahoo shareholders are becoming restless after Microsoft dropped its $33 a share bid for Yahoo and want some action soon.</p>
<p>And billionaire activist investor Carl Icahn is still pursuing his proxy fight to remove Yahoo&#8217;s board and management.</p>
<p>Insiders within Yahoo suspect that top execs want to make changes before the Aug. 1 annual meeting, so they can show momentum.</p>
<p>The question is whether that will include another more significant change&#8211;the stepping up to Chairman for Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang and the handing over the CEO reins to Decker.</p>
<p>Many execs said that Yang has been strangely absent from the communications around the reorg, which has been driven largely by Decker.</p>
<p>&#8220;Where&#8217;s Jerry here? He is like a ghost,&#8221; said another exec. &#8220;It is nerve-wracking.&#8221;</p>

<p>Our post also alluded to the precarious situation around the top four execs just under <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">Network division head Jeff Weiner</a>, who left last week.</p>
<p>Those execs are: Front Door and Network Services&#8217; Tapan Bhat, Brad Garlinghouse, who heads Yahoo&#8217;s communications and communities arenas, Media Group head Scott Moore and Yahoo Search&#8217;s Vish Makhijani.</p>

<p>It looks as though the departure of Makhijani (pictured here) will also be announced today or tomorrow.</p>
<p>With Yahoo search just treading water and a deal to outsource some of the search-ad business to Google (GOOG), one has to wonder how Makhijani endured in the center of the storm for this long.</p>
<p>And while there have been reports that Garlinghouse will also leave this week&#8211;it was he who started the ball rolling with his <a href="http://online.wsj.com/public/article/SB116379821933826657-0mbjXoHnQwDMFH_PVeb_jqe3Chk_20061125.html">infamous &#8220;Peanut Butter Manifesto&#8221;</a> that called for deep change at Yahoo nearly two years ago&#8211;sources tell me he is still sifting through his options, in light of a sweeping reorganization at Yahoo that he is reportedly deeply unhappy about.</p>
<p><a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/images1.jpeg"><img src="http://kara.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/images1.jpeg" alt="" title="images1" width="89" height="118" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-2190" /></a></p>
<p>That&#8217;s why it is more than likely that Garlinghouse (pictured here) will also leave&#8211;perhaps by next week&#8211;but he has not resigned or told his subordinates of any plans as yet.</p>
<p>But given that power is shifting dramatically to Global Partners Solutions EVP Hilary Schneider in the reorg I wrote about last night, Garlinghouse&#8217;s time at Yahoo seems limited.</p>
<p>As I wrote: &#8220;Many sources expect that Schneider is likely to amass more power in the new structure&#8211;she is close to [Yahoo President Sue] Decker, who must dramatically rejigger Yahoo&#8217;s top echelons to better focus the company on its stated objectives of becoming the premier ad network and a consumer &#8216;starting point.&#8217;&#8221;</p>
<p>More like ending point for a lot of critical Yahoo execs, as repercussions from Yahoo&#8217;s botched handling of the Microsoft (MSFT) takeover bid ripple throughout the company.</p>
<p>Memo to Moore and Bhat: If this were a murder mystery, like &#8220;Ten Little Indians,&#8221; one of you better tread <em>very, very</em> carefully.</p>

<p>After the recent departure of Network division EVP <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/weiner-will-leave-yahoo-but-might-not-be-replaced/">Jeff Weiner</a> and Chief Data Officer <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080612/yahoo-loses-another-major-executive-usama-fayyad-out/">Usama Fayyad</a>&#8211;along with the flashier exit of Flickr&#8217;s Co-Founders Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake (who, it should be said, have been easing quietly out the door for a while now)&#8211;several sources tell BoomTown that Search and Advertising Technology group EVP Qi Lu is the next on his way out.</p>

<p>But Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang and President Sue Decker should be worried about just about everyone at this point, from Connected Life EVP Marco Boerries to Platforms and Infrastructure division EVP Ash Patel to the quartet of execs under Weiner.</p>
<p>Any insecurity in that group&#8212;Front Door and Network Services&#8217; Tapan Bhat, Brad Garlinghouse, who heads Yahoo&#8217;s communications and communities arenas, Media Group head Scott Moore and Yahoo Search&#8217;s Vish Makhijani&#8211;and other SVPs on that level really, are especially worrisome, as the voids above and below them become larger and offers from the outside more enticing.</p>
<p>So, combined with the levels of tension rising at the company dramatically with the continued external turmoil, the looming reorg has got to have them plenty worried.</p>
<p><span id="more-68244"></span></p>
<p>Worse, Yahoos are bracing for a big one this time&#8211;sources all talk about a much more deep and profound managerial shift&#8211;rather than the deck-chair-arranging that has been typical of most Yahoo reorgs.</p>
<p>For those just checking into this drama, reorganizations are to Yahoo as floods are to Venice&#8211;inevitable, annoying and very unpleasant.</p>
<p>Still, CEO Jerry Yang and President Sue Decker&#8211;who appears to be the main architect of the changes&#8211;do have to try to give the company&#8217;s management structure a new shape for the challenges ahead and before the Aug. 1 annual meeting.</p>
<p>This is critical, given everyone and anyone will want to see a clear and well-articulated strategy for Yahoo&#8217;s future from the pair by then.</p>

<p>More importantly, it has to be a plan for making the company as valuable as the $33-a-share offer from Microsoft (MSFT) that went <em>poof</em> after the software giant walked away from its takeover attempt in early May.</p>

<p>While Wall Street and major shareholders have been insisting (and hoping fervently) that Microsoft will return to buy all of Yahoo again, BoomTown is here to tell them it&#8217;s kind of like <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080613/microsofts-not-bluffing/">waiting for Godot</a>.</p>
<p>Which has made them very frustrated. Very, very. A lot. Tons. Much.</p>
<p>&#8220;Jerry and Sue have no more chances to get this right,&#8221; said one major shareholder. &#8220;This is it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Translation: As tired as they must be by now, Yang and Decker have to pull the biggest rabbit ever out of the hat in this reorg and resetting at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Sources say the reorg will focus on creating more of a global product organization, because too much development of common products (like email) is being done all over the company worldwide.</p>
<p>In addition, many have suggested creating a more integrated relationship between products and their revenue sources.</p>
<p>Not having those responsible for selling ads in close sync with, for example, new content or software initiatives has produced a level of frustration within executive ranks at Yahoo.</p>

<p>Many sources expect that Schneider is likely to amass more power in the new structure&#8211;she is close to Decker, who must dramatically rejigger Yahoo&#8217;s top echelons to better focus the company on its stated objectives of becoming the premier ad network and a consumer &#8220;starting point.&#8221;</p>

<p>Jeff Weiner (pictured here), as BoomTown reported in a story broken by BoomTown <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080610/yahoo-execs-under-stress-whither-weiner/">Tuesday</a> and also <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080611/more-on-whither-weiner/">yesterday</a>, will be leaving Yahoo (YHOO) to become an entrepreneur in residence at both Accel Partners and Greylock Partners.</p>
<p>But, despite a lot of speculation on the subject by <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/06/11/jeff-weiners-departure-from-yahoo-imminent-speculation-on-successor-begins/">sites like TechCrunch</a> (whose curiously petulant lifting of actual reporting done by others&#8211;in this case, BoomTown&#8211;without any attribution is fast approaching pathetic), let&#8217;s try some more actual reporting:</p>
<p>Sources at the company said that Weiner will not likely be replaced as Network division head by one of his four direct reports.</p>
<p>Those execs are: Front Door and Network Services&#8217; Tapan Bhat, Brad Garlinghouse, who heads Yahoo&#8217;s communications and communities arenas, Media Group head Scott Moore and Yahoo Search&#8217;s Vish Makhijani.</p>

<p>Not having those responsible for selling ads in close sync with, for example, new content or software initiatives has produced a level of frustration with executive ranks at the company.</p>
<p>The setup would create more of a global product organization, with more integrated sales and product development.</p>
<p>&#8220;It would be nice to have sales in the room now, as we develop services, instead of totally separate,&#8221; said one exec at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Whatever the resulting organization, Weiner&#8217;s departure gives President Sue Decker the ability to more dramatically rejigger Yahoo&#8217;s top echelons to better focus the company on its stated objectives of becoming the premier ad network and a consumer &#8220;starting point.&#8221;</p>
<p>Schneider is a Decker favorite, having been brought to the company from Knight Ridder in the fall of 2006, making her a much later arrival to Yahoo than Weiner, who came in 2001.</p>
<p>She is very well-liked by Yahoo troops and is considered a strong leader at the company.</p>
<p>A move to give her more responsibility would also be accompanied by allowing Weiner&#8217;s reports to have more autonomy over their units.</p>
<p>It could also presage a move to make Decker the CEO eventually, with Schneider as her No. 2 and Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang as chairman.</p>
<p>Currently, the company is unlikely to make such a drastic change, especially since it is under siege in a proxy battle being waged by billionaire icon Carl Icahn.</p>
<p>Icahn has recently called for Yang&#8217;s ouster, in the wake of its failed takeover talks with Microsoft (MSFT), a fight that has tarnished both Yang and Decker on Wall Street and even within Yahoo ranks.</p>
<p>In any case, there is no timing on these moves as yet, as the company was caught unaware by Weiner&#8217;s plans, sources said, since he was on paternity leave.</p>
<p>Weiner had not indicated that he was considering leaving for good until recently, although many inside and outside the company had surmised that he would eventually leave after former CEO and Chairman Terry Semel did early in the year.</p>
<p>Weiner came to Yahoo with Semel and is a longtime protege of the former Hollywood exec.</p>

<p>Yahoo&#8217;s board has been meeting today and, doubtlessly, its directors had a lot to talk about (more on that later!).</p>
<p>Of course, there&#8217;s the obvious topic of having to figure out how best to deal with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080610/memo-to-carl-icahn-please-simmer-down/">noisy stylings of billionaire investor Carl Icahn</a>, who is waging a proxy war on Yahoo (YHOO) and calling for new management at the top.</p>
<p>But perhaps what the board should be focused on is the <em>old</em> management at Yahoo, especially in the levels just below the top, who have been operating the company under a lot of stress for far too long.</p>
<p>These would be those not involved in the deal&#8211;which has been essentially restricted to the board and also to CEO Jerry Yang, President Sue Decker and CFO Blake Jorgensen.</p>
<p>Yahoo&#8217;s operating execs have only been brought in when they are asked to assess the impact of possible options.</p>
<p>So with the clear-cut deal to be acquired by Microsoft (MSFT) seemingly off the table for now and a range of squishier partial ones being considered with either Microsoft or Google (GOOG), along with the continuing distraction of Icahn&#8217;s three-ring circus, it has not been easy for its execs to keep focus.</p>
<p>Thus, many continue to consider their options.</p>

<p>The latest speculation, for example, surrounds the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20080606/the-mystery-of-the-canceled-yahoo-dinner-solved-or-is-it/">fate of Network division EVP Jeff Weiner</a> (pictured here), who has been on paternity leave for four weeks and will return to work next Monday, sources said.</p>
<p>Sources also tell me there will be a major internal announcement tomorrow and many quickly speculated to me that it would concern Weiner&#8217;s fate.</p>
<p>Not quite yet. But most at Yahoo I have spoken to do not expect him to stay long, even leaving within the next few weeks, pointing to the continued uncertainty at the company and also, I would imagine, sheer weariness.</p>
<p>Weiner came to Yahoo with former CEO and Chairman Terry Semel in the 2001, the last period Yahoo was in major distress.</p>
<p>And BoomTown has learned that this internal rumor is borne out by several sources within the venture capital community, who have been speaking to Weiner very recently about coming there as an executive in residence.</p>
<p>The obvious candidates for a new home for Weiner are the top firms, such as Accel Partners and Greylock Partners and perhaps even Benchmark Capital or Sequoia Capital, all of which have ties to Yahoo and have several former Yahoos on staff.</p>
<p>A Weiner departure would leave a big hole at Yahoo, and it is not clear which of his top four SVP reports would take his place&#8211;Front Door and Network Services&#8217; Tapan Bhat, Brad Garlinghouse, who heads Yahoo&#8217;s communications and communities arenas, Media Group head Scott Moore and Yahoo Search&#8217;s Vish Makhijani&#8211;if at all.</p>
<p>Or even if Yang and Decker will keep the same setup in place.</p>
<p>That might mean another reorg, which has long been a specialty of Yahoo, to reorder its divisions even more leanly or to put more revenue accountability within the units.</p>
