<p>Target today <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/01/12/us-target-design-idUSTRE80B16120120112">said it plans to test Apple mini-stores at a few dozen of its retail locations this year</a>, expanding a partnership that to date has seen it selling only iOS devices.</p>
<p>&#8220;We will have 25 stores with a unique display and assortment [of Apple products],&#8221; <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/story/target-to-test-drive-apple-mini-stores-2012-01-12">Target spokeswoman Dustee Jenkins told MarketWatch</a>.</p>
<p>First reported <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/12/01/06/apple_to_open_new_store_within_a_store_outlets_inside_target_this_year.html">by AppleInsider last week</a>, the move is a wise one for both companies.For Target, it&#8217;s a good way to invigorate its softening electronics business, which forced the retailer to cut its earnings forecast last week.  And for Apple, it&#8217;s another means of expanding its retail reach into smaller locations that can&#8217;t support a standalone Apple Store. The company inked a similar deal with Best Buy in 2007, debuting a handful of mini-stores at several of the big box retailer&#8217;s locations. Today, some 700 Best Buy stores across the United States feature an Apple shop.</p>
<p>Apple declined comment on the arrangement.</p>

<p>The list is based on my own taste, and in no particular order, so feel free to share the ones that made you snicker the most.</p>
<p>Admittedly, they are much more bearable to watch now that the holidays are over and they no longer serve as a reminder for all of the things you have left to do.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-155206" title="ATDAmazonVertTower1-194x300" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/ATDAmazonVertTower1-194x300-184x285.png" alt="" width="184" height="285" />That&#8217;s Target&#8217;s motto this holiday season, as it promises on-time Christmas deliveries for online orders placed by Tuesday.</p>
<p>But some retailers are being a little more jolly.</p>
<p>In today&#8217;s fast-paced digital world, procrastinators are being rewarded, and will be able to shop online as late as Thursday and still get presents safely underneath the tree in time for Christmas.</p>
<p>For example, Wal-Mart will rush packages to your door for orders placed as late as Wednesday; Amazon is offering regular free two-day shipping as late as Wednesday; Zappos is offering free shipping for orders made by 1 pm PT on Thursday; and Toys &#8220;R&#8221; Us will go as late as noon on Thursday for express shipping.</p>
<p>There are exceptions, of course, and Amazon is a big one.</p>
<p>For orders placed on Thursday, one-day shipping will cost shoppers $3.99 an item; for items ordered on Friday, only Amazon Prime members will be able to pay $9.99 an item for on-time delivery; those in 11 U.S. cities can wait until Saturday, at which point it will cost $3.99 per item to ship by local express.</p>
<p>Amazon Prime is the e-commerce company&#8217;s membership service; it charges $79 a year for free two-day shipping and other perks, like free streaming videos.</p>
<p>One of the biggest limitations for the holiday is the logistics of getting a package from a distribution center to someone&#8217;s home. For example, FedEx won&#8217;t be running on Christmas, but will be running partial operations on Christmas Eve, a Saturday.</p>
<p>At this late point in the year, physical retailers shine.</p>
<p>For example, Apple&#8217;s shipping cutoff date is on Wednesday, but it will allow customers to order online and pick up in the store until 11 pm on Friday. On Christmas Eve, many of its stores will be open until 6 pm. Toys &#8220;R&#8221; Us and Best Buy are also offering free in-store pickup, adding late hours to accommodate the busiest of people. Best Buy will be open until 3 pm local time on Dec. 24, and Toys &#8220;R&#8221; Us will will stay open for 112 hours straight, starting at 6 am Tuesday, Dec. 20 and closing at 10 pm on Saturday night.</p>
<p>Online retailers can&#8217;t compete with store hours but, conversely, stores have had a hard time competing with the deals online, especially earlier in the season.</p>
<p>This holiday period, Amazon prompted consumers <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111208/retailers-vs-amazon-a-brick-and-moral-dilemma/">to consider the moral dilemma of shopping in stores</a> versus online, when it kicked off a Dec. 10 promotion that offered $5 off to consumers as an inducement to walk out of stores empty-handed. EBay fired back with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111215/amazon-paid-you-5-to-leave-a-store-now-ebay-is-giving-you-10-to-return/">its own promotion</a>, which gave online shoppers a $10 coupon to return to stores.</p>
<p>To be sure, online retailers will have something to celebrate on Sunday.</p>
<p>ComScore, <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/12/Free_Shipping_Day_Punctuates_Heavy_Week_of_Online_Holiday_Shopping">which is tracking online spending habits this holiday season</a>, said $30.9 billion had been spent online during a 46-day shopping window that ended Dec. 16, marking a 15 percent increase over last year.</p>
<p>Spending last Friday &#8212; dubbed Free Shipping Friday &#8212; hit $1.07 billion; it was the fourth day to surpass the billion-dollar mark this year. Still, Cyber Monday &#8212; the Monday following Thanksgiving &#8212; appears to rank as the heaviest online spending day of the year for the second consecutive season.</p>

<p>The financial services company is forging an official partnership with eBay-acquired RedLaser to offer consumers on-the-fly comparison shopping options, and to boost buying through its online rewards store, <a href="https://www01.extra.americanexpress.com/">shopAmex</a>. </p>
<p>RedLaser is a leading mobile bar code application, with an estimated 15 million downloads across all mobile operating systems.  <img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/12/AmexRedLaser-190x285.png" alt="" title="AmExRedLaser" width="190" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-153134" /></p>
<p>All AmEx cardholders with membership rewards &#8212; whether Green, Platinum or Centurion Black Cards &#8212; that download the free app to their smartphones will be able to scan item bar codes, find out how many AmEx rewards points they’ve accumulated and potentially purchase the same item at a discount on shopAmex, a catalog of five million products from approximately 60 online retailers like Target, Saks and Apple. About four million of the listed products will be available to cardholders that use the RedLaser bar code scanner.  </p>
<p>For American Express, the RedLaser deal is part of a growing push toward serving customers through mobile. The company’s most recent earnings report shows that AmEx has 95.8 million cards in force, including consumer, corporate and small-business cards; and according to the company, an estimated two-thirds of cardholders with membership rewards use a mobile or tablet device.</p>
<p>“In everything we do right now in terms of mobile and tablet, we’re trying to figure out ways to deliver value to our customers, because this is where it is right now: They’re using their phones to shop,” said Dustin Harris, director of interactive development at American Express.</p>
<p>For retailers &#8212; and consumers &#8212; it goes to show that it’s a brave new comparative world out there, with more shoppers having access to potentially better price points right in the palms of their hands, via smartphones. As my colleague Tricia Duryee <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111129/cyber-monday-sales-break-a-new-record-hitting-1-25-billion/">reported </a>recently, mobile shopping shot up during this year’s Cyber Monday record-setting sales, and mobile is expected to spur even more buying as smartphone adoption increases.</p>
<p>The RedLaser app for AmEx membership rewards will work only on the iPhone to start, though the company expects an optimized iPad app to become available soon.</p>
<p><strong>Update:</strong> A previous version of this article suggested AmEx users could use the RedLaser bar code scanner to cash in on membership rewards and buy an Apple iPad. Cardholders will not be able to scan a bar code to buy an iPad through shopAmex. </p>

<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s wrong to try something in the store and then buy it online,&#8221; said Lesley Tweedie, who owns a bike shop with her husband in Chicago and is hoping that the mantra &#8220;buy it where you try it&#8221; takes off.</p>
<p>Tweedie is also the founder of <a href="http://www.littleindependent.com/">Little Independent</a>, a six-month-old marketplace where local stores can feature products online.</p>
<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know what their [Amazon's] motivations are. I would like to believe it&#8217;s about business and it&#8217;s not about deliberately trying to hurt a retailer,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But this affects our little bike shop in Chicago, Target, Wal-Mart or Nordstrom. It affects them all.&#8221;</p>
<p>The promotion brings into question a shopper&#8217;s moral compass just in time for the holidays.</p>
<p>Does price or convenience win? Or, is it more important to shop locally to support jobs and nearby businesses?</p>
<p>From the consumer&#8217;s perspective, it&#8217;s hard to walk away from Amazon&#8217;s offer. The application compares prices, gives product reviews and, on Saturday, will also offer a discount to those who use it to make a purchase online.</p>
<p>Still, it seems consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the online-versus-local debate.</p>
<p>EBay recently conducted an online survey on the subject, and based on more than 1,000 responses, found that nearly 50 percent of shoppers plan to allocate up to half of their holiday budget to buying local this season. EBay says it tries to be an advocate for local stores. Its bar-code scanning app, Red Laser, not only shows people the cheapest price online, but also provides a list of stores where the item can be purchased locally.</p>
<p>Yesterday, the Retail Industry Leaders Association made a much less emotional argument.</p>
<p>Jason Brewer, the association&#8217;s VP of communications and advocacy, said Amazon is anticompetitive because it does not collect sales tax in most states, so it will nearly always have a price advantage over a physical store.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our retailers aren&#8217;t afraid to compete on price &#8212; that&#8217;s a part of retailing,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If the price check app replaces the Sunday newspaper circular, that&#8217;s fine. But what retailers can&#8217;t do is not collect sales tax.&#8221;</p>
<p>Tweedie says the one silver lining of Amazon&#8217;s promotion is that it is bringing the conversation out into the open.</p>
<p>She frequently catches people pulling out their phone in her store and often even hears them wonder out loud if they find it for less on Amazon. &#8220;It&#8217;s hard as a retailer without alienating the shopper. But they&#8217;ve never thought about it, and they aren&#8217;t trying to be rude. &#8230; What I think is so exciting is how many people are talking about this.&#8221;</p>
<p>Amazon will offer the discount on up to three qualifying products in eligible categories, including electronics, toys, music, sporting goods and DVDs, and is anticipating that Saturday will be one of the biggest days of the year for the application.</p>

<p>In all, shopping has already reached $18.7 billion for the month of November and first two days of December, representing a 15 percent increase over 2010, <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/12/6_Billion_in_Cyber_Week_U.S._Online_Spending_Sets_New_Weekly_Record">according to comScore</a>.</p>
<p>The measurement firm had at least one explanation for the surge. It&#8217;s not because people were less naughty. Rather, it&#8217;s because of all the discounts being offered, with the prevailing method being free shipping.</p>
<p>Typically, the use of free shipping peaks around the Monday after Thanksgiving, comScore said, but this year, the incentive was used at record levels over an extended period of time.</p>
<p>Throughout the 2011 holiday season, more than half of all transactions have included free shipping, the research firm reports. In particular, during the week of Thanksgiving, the promotion was used the heaviest with nearly 65 percent of all shoppers not having to pay freight.</p>
<p>During the following week, which includes Cyber Monday, the percentage of free shipping stayed high at 63 percent.</p>
<p>Free shipping was not used as heavily during the online shopping season last year, peaking at only 55 percent the week of Thanksgiving.</p>
<p>The <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111128/apple-nipping-at-targets-heels-for-fourth-most-visited-site-on-black-friday/">five most visited sites</a> the day after Thanksgiving were Amazon, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Target and Apple.</p>
<p>While retailers such as Amazon are known for offering free shipping if you meet a certain spending threshold, clearly others are jumping on the bandwagon. For instance, Apple is offering free shipping on all purchases from its Web site until Dec. 22.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Apple was the fifth most-trafficked retailer on Black Friday, the only individual product brand to reach the top ranks among the major big-box retailers.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-147791" title="black friday target-apple" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/black-friday-target-apple-380x285.png" alt="" width="380" height="285" />The electronics manufacturer placed behind Target, Best Buy, Wal-Mart and Amazon, according to a comScore report that analyzed online shopping trends the day after Thanksgiving.</p>
<p>&#8220;Apple has not historically been in the top five &#8212; in fact, this is the first time I can remember,&#8221; said Andrew Lipsman, an analyst at comScore, who added that Apple was &#8220;nipping at Target&#8217;s heels,&#8221; registering only a few percentage points lower in overall traffic.</p>
<p>The strong ranking backs up <a href="http://9to5mac.com/2011/11/27/apples-black-friday-retail-store-sales-were-off-the-charts/">a report today by 9to5Mac</a> that said Apple&#8217;s Black Friday sales were &#8220;off the charts.&#8221; According to its sources, Apple blew away forecasts by 7 pm, and broke records for its biggest sales day ever.</p>
<p>ComScore&#8217;s figures include both Apple&#8217;s site as well as iTunes, so any resulting sales would encompass both hardware and digital products, such as apps and videos.</p>
<p>Separately, Experian Hitwise ranked Apple as the 12th most-visited retail site on Black Friday. It said the company&#8217;s total visits jumped 42 percent compared to 2010.</p>
<p>In both of these circumstances, what&#8217;s notable is Apple&#8217;s apparent mind share among consumers.</p>
<p>Best Buy, like some other retailers, is trying hard this season <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/11/27/best_buy_airs_tv_ads_promoting_itself_as_the_source_for_apple_products.html">to be the go-to source for Apple products</a>, running new TV ads promoting the chain as a place to buy Macs, iPads and iPhones. But Apple was able to rival gigantic big-box retailers, which carry thousands of products, including their own.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s impressive, especially <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111123/apple-drops-prices-on-ipad-macbook-air-for-black-friday/">since its discounts are generally not</a>.</p>
<p>Lipsman agreed: &#8220;Even though Apple does not provide the selection of products that you might find at a big box retailer, it is obviously top of mind when it comes to the most in-demand products, like the iPhone and iPad. Two of the biggest growth sectors right now are tablets and digital content downloads, and obviously Apple is extremely well positioned on both fronts.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Last year, the Monday after Thanksgiving became the big deal retailers always wanted it to be.</p>
<p>For the first time ever, so-called Cyber Monday registered as the biggest online shopping day of the year despite years of procrastinators lifting other days higher as they waited until a few days before Christmas to do their online shopping.</p>
<p>The theory had always been that consumers who flocked to stores on Black Friday would return to their desks on Monday to continue buying deals online.</p>
<p>Last year, the plan panned out and more than $1 billion-worth in items were added to virtual shopping carts across the U.S. to make it the heaviest online shopping day of the year &#8212; and the first time ever that a single day eclipsed the billion-dollar mark.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-147513" title="comscore_Cyber_Monday" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/comscore_Cyber_Monday-380x203.png" alt="" width="380" height="203" /></p>
<p>Now, with November already off to a strong start with a 15 percent increase in sales compared to the same period last year, another strong Monday could be in the works, according to comScore, which tracks online holiday spending. The research firm tracks shopping from fixed Internet connections, meaning it doesn&#8217;t count items purchased on phones or tablets.</p>
<p>Black Friday &#8212; the day after Thanksgiving &#8212; alone saw online sales of $816 million, making it the heaviest online spending day to date in 2011 and representing a 26 percent increase over the same day in 2010, <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Press_Events/Press_Releases/2011/11/Black_Friday_Boasts_816_Million_in_U.S._Online_Holiday_Spending">comScore reported</a>.</p>
<p>ComScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni said, “We now turn our attention to Cyber Monday, a day that Shop.org says will see eight in ten retailers running special online promotions. Last year, Cyber Monday was the heaviest day of online spending ever, with sales exceeding $1 billion, and we fully expect to see another record set this year.”</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-145062" title="target_black friday" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/target_black-friday-380x285.png" alt="" width="380" height="285" />Cyber Monday may finally be living up to its name.</p>
<p>Amazon is a prime example of a retailer working hard to pry open wallets today.</p>
<p>Last year, the largest e-commerce company said Cyber Monday was Amazon&#8217;s peak day with more than 13.7 million items ordered worldwide, setting a record for 158 items sold per second.</p>
<p>Today, it will be important to achieve that pace again.</p>
<p>On Sunday, it bought full-color circulars in newspapers around the country promoting its lineup of discounts in its special <a href="http://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&amp;node=384082011">Cyber Monday store</a>.</p>
<p>On the front page, it touted its full lineup of Kindle e-readers, and a couple of pages were also dedicated to sales supposedly so steep you had to go online to see the prices for electronics, cellphones and videogames.</p>
<p>The Cyber Monday store, however, appeared a little unorganized with random &#8220;lightning deals,&#8221; which ranged from gift baskets to knife sets, board games, power tools and inexpensive jewelry &#8212; but nothing that seemed like the hit item of the season.</p>
<p>Other leading retailers, including Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target, will also be expected to offer special deals.</p>
<p>Surely, the theory goes, if enough marketing dollars are spent, and the discounts are substantial enough, it might get consumers to turn out again to break another record.</p>
<p><a href="http://blog.comscore.com/2011/11/cyber_monday_work_computers.html">In a blog post</a>, comScore analyst Andrew Lipsman explained that last year&#8217;s shopping bonanza on Cyber Monday &#8212; which was first named that six years ago &#8212; was finally successful thanks to consumer awareness.</p>
<p>Over the past few years, it&#8217;s been steadily climbing.</p>
<p>In 2009, it was the second-biggest shopping day; in 2008, it ranked third. Before that, it wasn&#8217;t even close to the top. In 2006, it ranked 12th and in 2007, it ranked ninth.</p>
<p>&#8220;Today the majority of consumers know what it is and the attractive types of deals they can anticipate. With increased awareness comes increased participation on the part of both retailers and consumers,&#8221; he wrote.</p>
<p>So, now we have to wait to see if the deals &#8212; and the shoppers &#8212; both turn out, or if Cyber Monday turns out to be just another big sales day.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A handful of large retailers are opening their doors on Thanksgiving to get a jump on &#8220;Black Friday&#8221; sales.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-145062" title="target_black friday" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/target_black-friday-380x285.png" alt="" width="380" height="285" />But the strategy might backfire. Not only are employees upset that they&#8217;ll have to staff the stores instead of being able to stay with their families, the move could cannibalize the retailers&#8217; own online and mobile efforts.</p>
<p>Historically, shoppers have lined up in the early hours on the day after Thanksgiving &#8212; which has come to be known as Black Friday &#8212; to race into stores and be the first to scoop up discounts ahead of the holidays.</p>
<p>This year, stores are jumping the gun by opening a day earlier. Wal-Mart will open at 10 pm, two hours ahead of last year&#8217;s opening; Toys &#8220;R&#8221; Us will open at 9 pm, an hour earlier than last season; and Target will open for four hours when the clock strikes midnight.</p>
<p>On behalf of employees, <a href="http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-target-to-save-thanksgiving">Change.org has kicked off a petition</a>, &#8220;Tell Target to Save Thanksgiving,&#8221; which argues that night openings rob hourly and salary workers of time off with their families.</p>
<p>But there may also be an economic reason to maintain standard practices.</p>
<p>Most of these retailers have major online presences and multiple mobile applications, including on the iPad. If they are open 24 hours a day online, must they actually open the doors, too?</p>
<p>After all, Amazon.com is never considered closed.</p>
<p>To get a sense of the strategy, we talked to someone who works on mobile and online strategy at one of the major retailers that is opening early. He told <strong>AllThingsD</strong> that he was worried about the impact opening early will have on mobile traffic, since traditionally their peak traffic hits between 3 am and 5 am, before stores open on Black Friday.</p>
<p>If customers have the option of visiting the stores in person earlier, it&#8217;s unclear whether that pattern will continue &#8212; and whether people will do some extra shopping while killing time standing in line waiting for the doors to open.</p>
<p>Even though mobile is still a small contributor compared to online traffic or store traffic, the retailer in question has scaled its infrastructure to accommodate this early-morning surge.</p>
<p>In general, the 2011 holiday season is expected to drive record sales online and from mobile devices.</p>
<p>Chase Paymentech, which analyzes information from the Top 50 e-commerce retailers, reports that online sales are up 25 percent compared to last year. A separate study by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111111/ho-ho-mo-record-number-of-consumers-expected-to-shop-by-phone-this-holiday/">IBM predicts that traffic to retail sites</a> from mobile devices is expected to more than double this month from the last holiday season, reaching 15 percent of all visits to retail sites. Last year, on &#8220;Cyber Monday,&#8221; mobile visits totaled only 3.9 percent.</p>
<p>But Andrew Lipsman, VP of industry analysis at comScore, said he did not believe the impact of opening early would be very significant.</p>
<p>&#8220;Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday are not huge online spending days,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So, even if sales are relatively soft, it should not have a significant impact on the full season for online retailers. At the end of the day, it will likely be a rounding error &#8212; if anything.&#8221;</p>
<p>ComScore&#8217;s data excludes sales made on tablets or mobile phones, but it estimates that those devices account for a minor amount of e-commerce spending &#8212; roughly 3 percent.</p>

<p>The moves are being spurred by the fast growth of online sales and a realization by some big brick-and-mortar chains that they&#8217;re still behind the curve.</p>
<p>Target Corp. is looking for a new president of Target.com after a disastrous website crash in September led the last person in the job to resign.</p>

<p>Best Buy Chief Executive Brian Dunn, said he felt forced to &#8220;make a very difficult decision&#8221; and open at midnight because rival retailers were doing so, though the decision was controversial inside the company.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Online shopping is quick and easy if you know what you&#8217;re looking for, or only have to decide between a couple of products. But it can get tedious and time-consuming if you&#8217;re making a purchase that requires lots of comparisons over multiple sites.</p>

<p>So, I&#8217;ve been testing Digital Folio, a new, free software product to be announced next week. It&#8217;s a browser add-on that lets you save and view potential product choices in a single place, and quickly see how their prices compare among some major online retailers.</p>
<p>You just drag links to products that interest you into a sidebar right alongside your Web browser. This module stays with you regardless of what website you&#8217;re viewing, and its contents can be shared with friends.</p>
<p>Best of all, for certain kinds of products from certain merchants, the sidebar will almost instantly show price comparisons for the same item from other online stores—even if you aren&#8217;t viewing the other stores&#8217; websites. If you decide to buy an item, you just click on its link in the sidebar, and you&#8217;ll be taken to the retailer&#8217;s site, where you can place your order as you normally would.</p>
<p>Digital Folio is labeled as a beta, or test, version. But, in my tests, I found that, despite some limitations and rough edges, it&#8217;s a powerful piece of software that I believe could save shoppers both time and money.</p>
<p>Its maker, a small startup from Denver of the same name, has been showing and testing Digital Folio for awhile, but finally feels it&#8217;s ready for wide use. You can try it now at digitalfolio.com. The company makes money by getting a small cut of purchases made by Digital Folio users at partner online merchants.</p>
<p>Before getting into the details, it&#8217;s important to lay out three key limitations of Digital Folio today. First, while it can save potential choices for any kind of product from any site, Digital Folio only generates automatic price comparisons when you save product listings from its five online retail partners, which it calls &#8220;Smart Retailers.&#8221; These are Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Wal-Mart and Sears. </p>
<p>Second, even at the partner retail sites, Digital Folio&#8217;s price comparison feature works for only 13 categories of items, all of them electronic products or appliances. These include cameras, computers, TVs, printers, refrigerators, dishwashers and microwaves. Oddly, two of the hottest such product categories—smartphones and tablets—aren&#8217;t included now in the price-comparison feature, but the company is planning to add more products.</p>
<p>Third, it only works with the two most popular Web browsers: Internet Explorer on Windows and Firefox on either Windows or Macintosh. And you&#8217;ll need relatively recent versions of the browsers and the computers&#8217; operating systems. I tested it using the latest versions of the two browsers on the latest versions of Windows and the Mac OS.</p>
<p>Mobile versions are planned in the coming months for Windows Phones and Apple mobile devices, with an Android version coming later.</p>
<p>There are other comparison-shopping products, but none that work like this.</p>
<p>Digital Folio&#8217;s sidebar has two main sections, marked by tabs at the top. One called My Folios stores your lists of possible purchases. These can be divided into sections, or folios, for different products. For instance, in my tests, I set up folios for cameras, laptops and TVs. Each folio can also have sections, like laptops with screens in a certain size range.</p>
<p>The second tab is called Compare, and it provides the varying prices at the five partner merchants, though these prices don&#8217;t yet include shipping and handling costs.</p>

<p>Here&#8217;s an example of how it worked for me in my tests. While shopping for a pocket-size digital camera, I noticed on Amazon a certain Canon Powershot model. So I dragged its link into the Digital Folio sidebar. It was $129 on Amazon, but Digital Folio immediately advised me that Sears had it for about $113, and Wal-Mart for $119. It also listed higher prices at other of its partner merchants.</p>
<p>An even more interesting thing happens when you go to a retailer&#8217;s page that lists many items in a category, say a page at Amazon that lists TVs. The Compare tab starts pulsating and, in seconds, it generates a list of all the items on the page, along with prices at the other partner merchants. </p>
<p>In my tests, this allowed me to see that a certain Samsung model was cheapest at Amazon, but a Vizio model that also caught my eye was a lot less at Wal-Mart.</p>
<p>Unlike items you&#8217;ve deliberately dragged into Digital Folio, these instant comparisons at list pages don&#8217;t stay in the sidebar. They disappear when you navigate away from the page. But they&#8217;re amazingly dynamic. For instance, if you narrow down the selection on the list page by, say, brand, size or price, the Digital Folio list with price comparison changes along with it.</p>
<p>So what are those rough edges I was talking about? Well, I found setup to be clumsy on Internet Explorer, requiring multiple steps. I also much preferred using the product on Firefox, because, when you click on an item in the sidebar to revisit its original page, that page opens in a tab. By contrast, in Internet Explorer, it opens a new window and has to slowly reload the Digital Folio sidebar.</p>
<p>Also, you can&#8217;t drag an item directly into a folio in the sidebar. Instead, you have to wade through a dialog box to choose the folio where it should reside. And you can&#8217;t automatically, or rapidly, set up a new folio for a new category of item you find on a site; you have to first manually establish a new folio.</p>
<p>The product also doesn&#8217;t automatically refresh itself on one computer, if you&#8217;ve made changes to your folios on another. And it crashed Firefox repeatedly on one of my test Macs, though not on another.</p>
<p>Still, despite its early limits and design drawbacks, I believe Digital Folio is a good start toward making complicated online buying decisions simpler.</p>

<p><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-102527" title="FacebookCredits_giftcards" src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/07/FacebookCredits_giftcards-380x166.png" alt="" width="380" height="166" />Terms of the deal were not disclosed.</p>
<p>GMG is a publisher of digital currency cards and works closely with Facebook to manage, distribute, market and manufacture the cards.</p>
<p>The cards, which are sold at major retailers including Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and GameStop, are good for Facebook Credits, which is the digital currency used inside all games on the social network.</p>
<p>The digital currency market is growing as more games are played online for free and give players the option of buying virtual goods inside the game. Rather than having to enter a credit card number online, game cards can be conveniently purchased in cash and redeemed online. Another big player in the industry is Atlanta-based <a href="http://www.incomm.com/aboutus.do">InComm</a>.</p>
<p>Topps, which was acquired and taken private by Michael Eisner&#8217;s Tornante Company and Madison Dearborn Partners in 2007, says it will leverage the acquisition to enter the digital currency market, while bringing manufacturing, design and collectibility skills to digital currency cards.</p>
<p>Rob Goldberg, the CEO of GMG, will become the VP and general manager of the digital currency business, reporting to Topps CEO Ryan O&#8217;Hara. GMG will represent the company&#8217;s third business division in addition to trading cards and confections, such as Bazooka bubble gum.</p>
<p>GMG&#8217;s other executives, Tim Pechmann and Jeff Mickeal, will also join Topps.</p>
<p>GMG works with about 45 clients, including the NFL and game companies like THQ.</p>

<p>Traditionally, the event has been all about videogame makers outdoing one another to ensure shelf space at the major retailers, like Target, Wal-Mart and GameStop. But increasingly the conversation is also about something that takes up absolutely no space at all: digital games.</p>
<p>Maybe to the surprise of many of the 45,000 people in attendance this week at E3, it&#8217;s the intangible stuff that&#8217;s driving much of the industry&#8217;s future.</p>
<p>The Entertainment Software Association, which organized the 17th annual event, <a href="http://www.theesa.com/facts/pdfs/ESA_EF_2011.pdf">released results of a study</a> saying that the format and demographic make-up of gaming are changing.</p>
<p>It said that purchases of digital full games, digital add-on content, mobile apps, subscriptions and social network gaming accounted for 24 percent of game sales in 2010, generating $5.9 billion in revenue.</p>
<p><strong>Other findings:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>The average game player is 37 years old, while the average game purchaser is 41 years old;</li>
<li>Sixty-five percent of gamers play games with other gamers in person;</li>
<li>Fifty-five percent of gamers play games on their phones or handheld devices;</li>
<li>Consumers spent $25.1 billion on game content, hardware and accessories in 2010.</li>
<li>Forty-two percent of gamers are women, and women 18 or older make up more than one-third of gamers.</li>

<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not possible. The economics don&#8217;t work,&#8221; Jay Marine, a Kindle director said in an interview. &#8220;At $114, we think it is the best deal for a consumer electronic. We sell a lot of consumer electronics, so we should know it&#8217;s a good deal.&#8221;</p>
<p>What if it were tied to other offers, like Amazon Prime, which costs $79 a year and offers free two-day shipping and access to free streaming movies?</p>
<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know how to do it. I would not get your hopes up,&#8221; he added.</p>
<p>Three years ago, the first Kindle went on sale for $399, and each subsequent price drop led to a spike in sales.</p>
<p>Last year, when Amazon dropped the price to $139 for the Wi-Fi model and $189 for 3G, <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101227/amazons-holiday-season-soars-by-44-percent-at-peak/">it became the company&#8217;s best-selling product in history</a>. What&#8217;s more, robust sales helped catapult <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110127/amazon-says-kindle-book-sales-have-overtaken-paperback-sales/?mod=ATD_rss">Kindle books to become the most popular format on the giant bookseller’s site</a>, surpassing hardback and even paperback books.</p>
<p>The new Kindle introduced today will cost $114 when it comes out on May 3. That&#8217;s roughly the same price as 10 paperbacks. It will be sold by Amazon, Best Buy and Target.</p>
<p>Marine&#8217;s comments aside, it appears Amazon is doing everything it can to bring the price of the device down. This time, it has squeezed another $25 out of the system with assistance from advertisers.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HFS6Z0">The Kindle at $114</a> will display full screen ads on the home screen, and a much smaller banner ad will appear at the bottom of the screen when using the menu. Ads will not appear inside books (and nothing changes for the more expensive Kindle models). Initial advertisers that have signed up include General Motors, Procter &amp; Gamble and Visa.</p>
<p>At the new price point, the Kindle will inevitably attract a few more hold-outs. But without hitting the $99 sweetspot, it&#8217;s questionable whether it will be enough for the masses, especially since it will now ship with advertisements. &#8221;We know price matters. We expect people to love it,&#8221; Marine said.</p>
<p>To be sure, Amazon is trying to make the experience sound as painless as possible.</p>
<p>For starters, the Kindle with Special Offers will have the exact same hardware that&#8217;s on sale at $139. It includes the same battery life, storage capacity and screen resolution.</p>
<p>And, the advertisements themselves are being sold less like a display banner and much more like a daily deal that a user has opted into, much like what Groupon and LivingSocial are offering today via email. The name &#8220;special offers&#8221; says it all. In fact,  Amazon will offer $20 gift cards for $10, a near-identical deal to the one <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110119/livingsocial-exceeds-one-million-amazon-gift-cards-sold-with-hours-to-spare/">LivingSocial </a>offered earlier this year, which led to more than one million sold.</p>
<p>Marine said there&#8217;s no direct connection between LivingSocial and Amazon today despite the company&#8217;s $175 million investment in the company.</p>
<p>Other specials include: $6 for six Audible books (normally $68), $1 for an album from Amazon MP3 Store and $10 for $30 of products in Amazon&#8217;s Demin Shop. Users will also be able to help dictate what ads end up appearing on their homescreen by placing votes on a system Amazon calls the <a href="http://www.amazon.com/aboutkindlespecialoffers">AdMash</a>.</p>
<p>Not once has Amazon revealed how many devices it has sold, preferring to speak in vague terms, such as millions of sales, or Kindle sales eclipsing “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” the seventh book in the children’s series.</p>
<p>Maybe that will change now that Amazon will have to respond to advertisers, who want to know the size of the audience it is reaching.</p>
<p>Nah, probably not.</p>

Morgan Chase &#038; Co. to TiVo Inc. is shining a light on the outsourcing of email marketing campaigns, a practice that has grown steadily over the past decade as consumers become less responsive to commercial pitches.</p>
<p>Epsilon Data Management LLC, a division of Alliance Data Systems Corp., said last week that hackers had accessed names and email addresses in its systems. In the days that followed, more than 40 companies—including J.P. Morgan Chase, TiVo and others—have said that their customers were among the victims.</p>
<p>The companies had hired Epsilon to manage marketing campaigns. When retailers such as Best Buy Co. and Target Corp. email promotions to customers, the likely buyers are often identified by and the messages are sent by firms such as Epsilon. Managing bulk mailings can be time-consuming and the technology to sort through customer information to come up with targeted promotions is often changing too quickly for businesses to do it on their own, experts say.</p>

<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-4160" title="gogii_Chandra Hill" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/gogii_Chandra-Hill-200x300.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="300" />Text messaging applications, which offer the ability to send messages to a group of people via a single phone number, were in the spotlight at SXSW. Companies such as Gogii, KIK, Beluga, GroupMe and Fast Society were the talk of the town since they provided easy ways for large groups of people to socialize and get in touch quickly.</p>
<p>Following the event, GroupMe provided its first hint at what its business model would be when it opened up its mobile group chat to brands, which would be highlighted in a &#8220;Featured Groups&#8221; section.</p>
<p>Now, Gogii is beefing up its monetizing efforts.</p>
<p>Hill, who will have the title of VP of monetization and publishing, was most recently VP of mobile monetization at Myspace.</p>
<p>She will oversee all company revenue, which includes in-app purchases, advertising and a new publishing unit, said Gogii CEO Scott Lahman. &#8220;I can’t think of anyone better who can hit the ground running. She&#8217;s been doing this for years at Fox and at Myspace. This is almost the exact same role.&#8221;</p>
<p>Gogii&#8217;s textPlus application has 7.7 million monthly active users and recently set a record for sending 35 million messages in one day.</p>
<p>While Hill is just joining the Los Angeles-based startup, the company has been monetizing with advertising from the beginning.  &#8221;We hit seven-figure revenue-quarters last year, and that’s continued to grow. We are well past the testing stage. Advertising campaigns were up 300 percent in the first quarter compared to the same period last year.&#8221;</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-4161" title="Gogii_splashscreen_glee" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/04/Gogii_splashscreen_glee-170x300.jpg" alt="" width="170" height="300" />Mostly, the app relies on splash ads&#8211;which are like a homepage takeover&#8211;which the user sees immediately after opening the application. Lahman said users on average open the application 10 to 15 times a day, and that the ads have a click-through rate in the high single digits. There are also banner ads from within the applications, which are seen by its nearly eight million monthly active users.</p>
<p>Lahman said they made the decision to monetize with advertising because it allowed them to grow the business much faster than if they charged for it. A paid version of the application, which has no advertising, allows the user to pick the area code for the phone number they use. He said six to 10 percent of its users choose to upgrade. The app costs $4.99 and is available on iPhone and Android.</p>
<p>&#8220;The advertisers love it. We are <em>the</em> text client for a lot of our customers&#8211;that’s why they use it so much to send so many messages.&#8221;</p>
<p>Gogii uses a mix of its own direct sales force in addition to farming out some inventory to mobile ad networks, like Google&#8217;s AdMob, Jumptap and Greystripe. Returning advertisers include Disney, Fox, Target, Ford, Paramount, CBS, Unilever, JCPenney, MTV, Coca-Cola and Zynga.</p>
<p>The new publishing business, which Hill will oversee, will experiment with a sort of white-label service, which will allow a brand to completely take over the application for a specific brand or event.</p>
<p>Lahman said in March, 25 percent of the company&#8217;s revenues were coming from paid features inside the application. It&#8217;s his goal to hit 50 percent by the end of the year. &#8220;That will come against a growing advertising business&#8211;that’s not cannibalizing it,&#8221; he said.</p>

<p>The big-box stores are backing a coalition called the Alliance for Main Street Fairness, which is leading efforts to change sales-tax laws in more than a dozen states including Texas and California.</p>
<p>Until now, the group has been largely associated with mom-and-pop stores, spotlighting stories of small toy shops and booksellers who argue Internet merchants that aren&#8217;t legally required to collect sales taxes enjoy an unfair advantage with shoppers.</p>

<p>Market consensus seems to be the latter. Already, early first weekend sales estimates of 400,000 to 600,000 are being made to look conservative as more bullish predictions hit the wires. Brian White at Ticonderoga Securities and Scott Sutherland at Wedbush both say they wouldn&#8217;t be surprised to see Apple sell close to one million iPad 2s in the opening weekend. And assuming supplies weren&#8217;t too constrained, they may well be proven right. With the consumer electronics market consumed by tablet mania largely unfulfilled by rival devices that have yet to arrive at market, the demand is certainly there. And the broader distribution network supporting the iPad 2&#8242;s launch (Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, AT&#038;T, Verizon) suggests that Apple was reasonably prepared to meet it.</p>
<p>That said, nearly every analyst report I&#8217;ve read this morning notes that field checks of iPad retail outlets found most stores, including Apple retail locations, had weekend stock-outs. &#8220;Our checks pointed to a shocking 100% stock-out rate across Apple/authorized retail stores just a few hours into the official launch Friday evening, contributing to what we believe was one of the company&#8217;s most successful product launches to date,&#8221; Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore said in a note to clients Monday.</p>
<p>So in the end, Apple didn&#8217;t have enough iPad 2s on hand to completely satisfy demand. The question now is, did it satisfy enough of it to brag about.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As of right about now, the <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110302/mobilized-gets-hands-on-with-the-ipad-2/">iPad 2</a> should be hitting the virtual shelves of Apple&#8217;s online store. Starting at 5 p.m., it should also be available in Apple&#8217;s retail outlets as well as Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart. AT&#038;T and Verizon Wireless stores will also have the models that work on their respective networks.</p>
<p>But, what strikes me is that while Apple is now ready with its second-generation tablet, many of its would-be rivals still haven&#8217;t made it out of the starting gate.</p>

<p>The only real tablet competition at the moment is from Android-based devices. Most of those, such as the <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20101110/samsung-galaxy-tab-tablet-review/">Samsung Galaxy Tab</a> and <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20110209/the-streak-7-bargain-tablet-from-dell-is-no-real-deal/">Dell Streak 7</a>, are running a version of the software aimed at phones. </p>
<p>Google has its tablet-optimized version, known as Honeycomb, but only the lead device&#8211;the <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20110223/motorolas-xoom-starts-tablet-wars-with-ipad/">Motorola Xoom</a>&#8211;has actually made it on the market ahead of the iPad 2. Other products, such as <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/tablets-flying-fast-and-furious-at-ces">T-Mobile&#8217;s LG G-Slate</a> and Honeycomb tablets from <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110105/tablets-flying-fast-and-furious-at-ces">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20110121/take-that-cupertino-toshiba-flashes-insults-at-apple-in-teaser-site-for-its-android-tablet/">Toshiba</a> and others still have yet to get a firm ship date, let alone go on sale.</p>
<p>The same goes for other iPad rivals. Research In Motion has been <a href="http://mobilized.allthingsd.com/20101207/rim-shares-a-page-from-its-playbook/">talking about its PlayBook for months</a> and showing glimpses of it at various events, but it has yet to announce when the product will go on sale. It has said it will hit the market this quarter, so it should be out soon, assuming no further delay.</p>
<p>Hewlett-Packard, meanwhile, has <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20110210/analysts-dub-hp-touchpad-a-legitimate-contender-for-second-place/">announced its WebOS-based TouchPad</a>, but it too falls into the category of announced-but-not-shipped.</p>
<p>What does all that mean?</p>
<p>Well, for one thing, it means that Apple is virtually guaranteed of extending its lead in the tablet market, making the game of catch-up all the harder for those seeking to dethrone the iPad.</p>
<p>Apple also gets other benefits for being first to the party. Because it knew what was coming, Apple did one of the many things it does well&#8211;tie up supply of key components.</p>
<p>Apple makes only a handful of products and bets big on those it launches. Some years ago, the company recognized that most of those products would depend on flash memory and struck deals that ensured it would have enough supply. It has made similar moves on other components and said during last month&#8217;s earnings call that it was prepaying for a bunch of goods, though it declined to identify just which parts its rivals would be short.</p>
<p>And, because Apple is also a tough negotiator, it also often gets volume deals that others have a tough time matching. The result is that would-be rivals not only can&#8217;t get enough parts, they have a tough time competing with Apple on price.</p>
<p>While a few tablets are priced less than Apple, most of them lack the same screen size and other capabilities. Those that do pack similar components are often priced higher than Apple, further blunting their impact.</p>

<p>One indicator is the sales of prepaid gaming cards that are purchased at Walmart, Target, 7-11 and many other retailers.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3468" title="Game Cards for sale" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/IMAG0245-168x300.jpg" alt="" width="168" height="300" />While the game cards are typically purchased in person, they can be used for a range of things, from buying virtual goods within FarmVille  to buying a game that&#8217;s digitally delivered over the internet via Xbox Live.</p>
<p>Today, NPD released industry sales figures for February today, reporting that prepaid game cards now account for 22 percent of all accessories sold and that sales have increased 52 percent compared to a year-ago.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, in the same time period console software sales only increased by 2 percent.</p>
<p>NPD&#8217;s Analyst Anita Frazier said the jump in game card sales points to the increased importance of digitally distributed content sales within the games industry, and that last month marked the best February on record for accessory sales.</p>
<p>The top-selling item was the Xbox 360 1,600 points card.</p>
<p>Overall, NPD reported that physical retail channel in the U.S. generated video game hardware sales in February of $467 million, increasing 10 percent. Video game software, including console and portable totaled $601.4 million, dropping 5 percent, and video game accessories totaled $257 million, increasing 22 percent.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>EMoney took a side trip this morning from the massive crowds gathering at Moscone in downtown San Francisco for the <a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20110228/fed-up-with-facebook-hi5-tells-social-game-developers-theres-an-alternative/">Game Developers Conference</a> to Japantown, where there was an equally vibrant, albeit slightly smaller, conference called the <a href="http://futureofmoney.com/moneyconference/">Future of Money</a>.</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3183" title="beerpour" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/beerpour-275x206.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="206" />EMoney was given the task of moderating a panel called &#8220;Leveraging New Markets&#8221; in front of a packed room with two other competing panels.</p>
<p>The participants were Ted Sorom, the CEO of <a href="http://www.rixty.com">Rixty</a>, Bruce Bower, the CEO of <a href="http://www.plasticjungle.com">Plastic Jungle</a> and Jeff Thomas, SVP of <a href="http://www.secondmarket.com/markets/private-company-stock.html">SecondMarket</a>.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s no video, so you&#8217;ll have to endure a written recap from my perspective as chief interrogator.</p>
<p>First, if you aren&#8217;t familiar with these companies, the four of us can attest there&#8217;s only one thread in common: Liquidity, and creating marketplaces to make assets more fluid.</p>
<p>The discussion is well-timed as we push beyond e-commerce and Web 2.0 to a new reality, where reducing friction to payments is turning into a large opportunity.</p>
<p>One solution popping up everywhere is to create virtual currencies, which solves the problem of paying for many items at small price points because it doesn&#8217;t make economic sense to charge 50 cents to your credit card on a regular basis.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, there&#8217;s lots of clogs in the system, ranging from gift cards that are never redeemed, to a large population of people who don&#8217;t have credit cards, to the more extreme, like what will eventually happen to all of those unused Groupon and LivingSocial vouchers?</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s a look at how all three are trying to add liquidity to the system:</p>
<p><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3185" title="rixty" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/rixty.png" alt="" width="137" height="56" />Rixty:</strong> The San Francisco company allows consumers to buy prepaid cards with cash to be redeemed for game credits online, such as Facebook Credits and Zynga&#8217;s CityVille.</p>
<p>On the panel, Sorom announced that Rixty&#8217;s distribution was increasing from 20,000 physical locations to 70,000 with the addition of Green Dot MoneyPak prepaid cards, which are sold at Walmart and 7-11. Greendot charges a $4.95 service fee, which Rixty will redeem as soon as soon as the card is spent online.</p>
<p><strong><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-3186" title="plasticjungle" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/plasticjungle.jpg" alt="" width="187" height="88" />Plastic Jungle:</strong> The San Jose, Calif.-based company is a secondary market for unwanted and unused gift cards.</p>
<p>The company buys them for up to 92 percent of face value, and sells them at a discount. Bower says some of the highest value gift cards are for Target and Walmart because they are the closest to cash. The lowest value cards are from local retailers or seasonal items, like See&#8217;s Candy, which only sell well on Valentine&#8217;s Day and Christmas.</p>
<p><strong><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3184" title="secondmarket logo_white_investments" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/secondmarket-logo_white_investments-e1298962522921.png" alt="" width="255" height="58" />SecondMarket:</strong> The New York-based company is a secondary market for private stock in companies, such as Facebook and Twitter. It deals in getting liquidity to employees or shareholders, who can&#8217;t yet sell their stock on the public market.</p>
<p>The summary is that while cash may still be king, the trend is to enable liquidity.</p>
<p>Some of the high-level takeaways:</p>
<p>&#8211; <strong>Thomas of SecondMarket:</strong> The company is constantly in headlines for being associated with Facebook&#8217;s $70 billion-plus or minus-private valuation. He said private company stock sales have become the fastest growing part of its business with transactions increasing to $400 million in 2010, up from only $100 million in 2009.</p>
<p>He said an essential part to keeping the assets liquid is to keep the information flowing, which is inherently difficult with companies that aren&#8217;t required to disclose any financial information. The company will soon be partnering with researchers to produce independent reports that will be purchased by potential investors.</p>
<p><strong>Sorom of Rixty:</strong> One of the big questions was how dominate Facebook will be able to become as a virtual currency platform.</p>
<p>Most panelists agreed that it was inevitable that it will become a powerhouse, but that it will face hurdles on two fronts. In order for it to win, it will have to appeal both to consumers and merchants. And, currently it charges a 30 percent fee, which is much too high for most physical and even some digital goods.</p>
<p>Sorom said regulations will also limit its activities. Just like at Rixty, they have avoided allowing users too much liquidity. The credits can only be used for pre-approved merchants and can not be swapped or traded among friends. Similarly, Sorom believes that Facebook would not have that have that ability, given current federal regulations.</p>
<p><strong>Bower at Plastic Jungle:</strong> Bower saved the best for last. Whenever trying to come up for a good description of liquidity think back to your college days, especially if they were pre-Internet.</p>
<p>As a crafty collegiate, he learned to live off one square meal, turning in his other meal plan points for cash. He purchased brand new textbooks on his parent&#8217;s dime and then returned them for used books a day later. All of the cash allowed him to gain the most important liquid asset of all &#8212; beer.</p>

Shares of the satellite-radio operator slid nearly 8 percent this morning, after <a href="http://investor.sirius.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=550111">it posted an unexpected loss.</a></p>
<p>Analysts had been calling for Sirius to break even in its fourth quarter on revenue of $740 million. Instead it reported a loss of $81.4 million, or two cents a share, on revenue of $735.9 million. The reason for the miss: An increase in operating expenses and $85.4 million in debt-extinguishment losses.</p>
<p>Unfortunate. Still, the company&#8217;s latest financials weren&#8217;t without some good news. Sirius added 328,789 new subscribers in the fourth quarter, up from 257,028 in the fourth quarter of 2009. And it ended 2010 with 20.2 million subscribers, 8 percent more than the 18.8 million it claimed at the end of 2009, and well above its target of 20.1 million.</p>
