This week, I went on a trek to downtown San Francisco–from ATD HQ, located in the wilds of the Castro–to visit David Sifry, the jovial Web entrepreneur who recently launched Offbeat Guides.

The San Francisco-based start-up makes “personalized, up-to-date travel guides that cover over 30,000 travel destinations, using a combination of search technology and curation by both amateur and professional travel experts.”

In other words, on-demand travel books, with a touch of humanity–an obvious and even innovative trend as custom printing gets cheaper.

But Sifry is also putting the guides on digital devices, like the Kindle from Amazon (AMZN).

Sifry, who also founded the blog search engine Technorati, talked to BoomTown about the business and gave me a quick tour of its HQ near Union Square.

Here’s the video interview:

South By Southwest isn't just a chance for Webby folks to drink. They also spent a lot of time thinking about the big issues of the day: Namely, what does Twitter mean, and what should we do about it?

Confession: A whole lot of what happens at South By Southwest is above and beyond the capacity of your humble correspondent to understand or explain.

Luckily, we have a professional willing to interpret the goings-on, free of charge. Meet Kevin Marks, whose business card describes him as “developer advocate” at Google (GOOG).

Marks, who has previously put in time at Apple (AAPL) and Technorati as an engineer, now has a job that seems to involve being an, um, advocate on behalf of his employer, specifically for its OpenSocial program. I think of OpenSocial as the “everyone but Facebook” social-network alliance, and Marks didn’t disabuse of me that notion in our chat on Sunday.

But he did add some layers of nuance, and he was game when I asked him to tell me what the theme of the conference has been so far. In a word: Twitter.

The longer version is here:

Why was supermodel Naomi Campbell suddenly standing right next to German publisher Hubert Burda at the final lunch for his company’s DLD–Digital, Life, Design–conference in Munich yesterday?

I have no idea, nor do I know why Burda broke out into song either–how much do you have to love a media mogul willing to do that?

But I got it all on video and a whole lot more on the last day of the pre-Davos European gathering focused on digital issues and innovation.

(And here is a post by European serial entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky, who apparently thinks his video shows that Accel Partners’ Simon Levene and I were not impressed enough by Campbell.)

In any case, DLD’s motto was: “Uploading the 21st Century.” And while it did not quite do that, there were definitely a lot of interesting moments I captured for your viewing pleasure.

Along with Campbell (who was supposed to appear on a panel on Africa, but did not) and a singing Burda, the video features clips from two sessions today.

The first was titled “Exploding Media” and included: pundit Clay Shirky riffing on flash mobs; a very funny clip of kids talking about television (made by Technorati’s Peter Hirshberg); Google’s Marissa Mayer noting that Google will still not be in the content business; Yahoo’s Bradley Horowitz discussing Yahoo’s plans to de-focus on making original content; and BuzzMachine blogger Jeff Jarvis advising old media to just ask WWGD? (What would Google do?).

Another session on the video features the founders of the genetics-focused social-networking company 23andMe–Anne Wojcicki, Linda Avey and Esther Dyson–answering questions about fears people have about learning too much about DNA.

Here is the video (and now I am off to Hamburg to visit Xing, a business social-networking company):

Dell says it will restate financial results after an internal audit finds evidence of irregularities going back several years. The adjustment will reduce the company’s profit by $50 million to $150 million.

Though some Skype users report being able to log on after a major outage yesterday, many users of the VOIP service remain in connectivity limbo as the company struggles to resolve what is presumed to be a software problem.

Despite the lingering hangover from its board-leak counterintelligence scandal, Hewlett-Packard reports robust third-quarter earnings, based largely on lower computer-component costs.

Computer rivals IBM and Sun Microsystems will collaborate on server technologies. The move means Sun’s Solaris operating system will be able to run on Big Blue’s servers.

Sprint announces it will spend $5 billion on its upcoming WiMax service dubbed (somewhat unpronounceably) “Xohm.”

Crying patent infringement, Nokia wants U.S. authorities to halt imports of Qualcomm’s chips and the cellphones they’re used in. The world’s largest cellphone maker is in a legal fray with Qualcomm since a deal over patents expired on April 9. Meanwhile, Nokia has warned its handset users that defective batteries pose a potential danger, offering to replace them in a voluntary program.

Strong sales of its Mac and iPhone are giving Apple renewed momentum, says RBC Capital’s Mike Abramsky, who maintains that shares of the computer-maker’s stock could eventually hit $175.

MTV Networks will pump $500 million into video-game development based on the network’s range of shows over the next two years. The investment comes as the traditional media company attempts to gain a toehold in the $30 billion global games market.

It looks like there’s upheaval at Technorati. The blog-search service is reportedly laying off eight people, and CEO David Sifry is resigning.

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the compact disc, the format that triggered a revolution in the recording industry and one that remains the principal means for consumers to listen to music, despite the growing popularity of digital downloading.
