			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mobile payments start-up Boku has just secured $35 million to fund its expansion, after announcing a new white-label mobile payments service.</p>

<p>The capital comes from new investors New Enterprise Associates and Telefonica, one of the world&#8217;s largest mobile operators, as well as existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Benchmark Capital, DAG Ventures, Khosla Ventures and others. So far, Boku, which works with wireless carriers for online buying and direct billing through wireless accounts, has raised a total of $75 million since its launch in 2009.</p>
<p>Boku will use the funding to expand the recently announced <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120223/boku-takes-pay-any-way-you-want-approach-with-mobile-payments/">Boku Accounts service</a>, the company said in a statement. The funds will also help with the continued expansion of the company&#8217;s global infrastructure. The San Francisco-based start-up currently operates in 67 countries around the globe, and works with 260 mobile-network operators.</p>
<p>As my <strong>AllThingsD</strong> colleague Tricia Duryee <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110707/ebay-acquires-mobile-payments-provider-zong-for-240-million-in-cash/">puts it</a>, a lot of companies believe that the mobile payments industry is set to take off over the next few years, with Boku being just one of them. But with so many approaches being explored, it’s not clear which solutions consumers will end up adopting.</p>
<p>Some &#8212; like Google, which has introduced Google Wallet, or Isis, a joint venture between wireless companies &#8212; believe near field communication technology is the future of people paying with their mobile phones. This is unlike what start-up Square is doing &#8212; allowing contractors and small businesses to take payments via their iPhones or iPads using a small, square dongle. </p>
<p>Some credit card companies, including Visa, are developing their own form of the digital wallet; while online payments giant PayPal has recently said that the digital wallet for consumers is something that lives in the cloud and should be device-agnostic, not tied to any one type of smartphone.</p>

<p>Last year, PayPal joined forces with Zong, a Boku competitor, through <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110707/ebay-acquires-mobile-payments-provider-zong-for-240-million-in-cash/">a $240 million acquisition.</a></p>
<p>PayPal is also getting into direct payments at point-of-sale systems in stores. So far, it&#8217;s offering customers the ability to pay by punching in a PayPal account number or by swiping a PayPal card at 2,000 Home Depot stores across the U.S. This is a potential threat to traditional credit card companies, such as Visa and MasterCard, as PayPal has the ability to undercut the fees that merchants pay to accept the traditional networks’ cards.</p>
<p>With Boku Accounts, Boku is actually working with a credit card company &#8212; MasterCard &#8212; by giving clients the ability to use a MasterCard magstripe to pay. Customers can also pay at NFC-enabled terminals with an NFC sticker on their phones, or they can pay with their wireless phone number at participating merchants.</p>
<p>Boku has said the advantage of this system is that merchants don’t have to “re-terminalize” &#8212; install an entirely new payment terminal &#8212; in order to accept Boku payments.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/11/clouseau_380x285.png" alt="" title="clouseau_380x285" width="380" height="285" class="alignright size-full wp-image-140493" />The European Commission is <a href="http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/0/e293251a-6d31-11e1-ab1a-00144feab49a.html">questioning five of Europe’s largest telecommunications companies</a> over concerns that a series of meetings held among them may have constituted collusion.</p>
<p>Targeted in the query are the so-called E5 &#8212; Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, and Vodafone &#8212; whose CEOs met occasionally, beginning in 2010, ostensibly to discuss major industry issues.</p>
<p>Topics of discussion reportedly ran the gamut of innocent topics &#8212; from mobile payment platforms to the creation of a common app platform. But evidently the EC is concerned that more nefarious things may have been discussed, and if that was the case, whether the meetings constituted collusion.</p>
<p>The European Commission confirmed the inquiry, but stressed that at this stage no formal investigation has been launched.</p>
<p>“The requests for information relate to the manner in which standardization for future services in the mobile-communications area is taking place,” a spokesman for EC Competition Chief Joaquin Almunia explained. “These fact-finding steps do not mean that we have competition concerns at this stage, nor do they prejudge the follow-up.”</p>
<p>So this may not necessarily lead to an official investigation. That said, such requests do often signal that a more detailed probe is in the offing.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Networking giant Cisco Systems has been talking for awhile now about its intentions to become a big supplier of cloud infrastructure. Today it got specific, with a portfolio of products it collectively calls CloudVerse.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110830/apples-cloud-still-isnt-streaming/sunshine-cloud/" rel="attachment wp-att-115283"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2011/08/sunshine-cloud.png" alt="" title="sunshine-cloud" width="300" height="225" class="alignright size-full wp-image-115283" /></a>Networking giant Cisco Systems has been angling to be a serious provider of cloud technology for a few years now, but hasn&#8217;t really laid out a strategy for how it intends to get there. Now that I think about it, it will be exactly a year ago tomorrow that I did my very first <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101206/meet-lew-tucker-ciscos-mr-cloud/"><strong>AllThingsD</strong> interview with Lew Tucker</a>, Cisco&#8217;s CTO for cloud computing.</p>
<p>Today, Cisco finally laid out a cohesive strategy to become a significant player in the cloud business. It announced an offering called CloudVerse that combines three big elements &#8212; its Unified Data Center, Cloud Intelligent Network and Cloud Applications &#8212; into a big portfolio aimed at companies building out their data centers.</p>
<p>The idea is basically this: If you want to build a cloud, either to resell cloud services of some kind or for your company&#8217;s own internal operations, Cisco wants to talk to you. Under the CloudVerse tent are a bunch of offerings including computing, networking, collaboration and software for automating and managing it all.</p>
<p>Cisco named a handful of companies who are already CloudVerse customers, and a few will catch your eye, because they&#8217;re big. One is <a href="http://www.terremark.com/default.aspx">Terremark</a>, the Web-hosting and cloud-services outfit that telecom giant Verizon acquired earlier this year. Others include Telecom Italia, Telefonica Spain and Fujitsu.</p>
<p>Naturally, Cisco is hoping to use its position as the supplier of choice for networking gear as a springboard into selling more stuff inside the data center, and it already has key relationships with many a corporate CIO. A key part of its go-to-market strategy will be convincing those CIOs that it has something unique to offer.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s one such thing: The Network Positioning System and Cloud-to-Cloud connected. Imagine you have a sprawling set of far-flung data centers around the globe. When one center gets starts to get close to reaching its capacity load &#8212; maybe it&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111129/cyber-monday-sales-break-a-new-record-hitting-1-25-billion/">Cyber Monday</a> or something &#8212; Cisco&#8217;s NPS technology allows the routers in one data center to start automatically looking around for capacity elsewhere, to keep things humming along. </p>
<p>There&#8217;s a lot more detail to it, but it&#8217;s worth pointing out that, as a percentage of Cisco&#8217;s business, the cloud business isn&#8217;t huge. On an earnings conference call with analysts last month, CEO John Chambers said that the Unified Computing System that forms the backbone of its server business had recorded 116 percent revenue growth year over year; even with that, it&#8217;s on run-rate to being a $1 billion annualized business. If it hits that mark in Cisco&#8217;s fiscal year 2012, which ends in July, it will amount to about 2 percent of estimated annual sales.</p>
<p>But Cisco expects the cloud business opportunity to grow like crazy. Last week, it issued something called the <a href="http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns1175/networking_solutions_sub_solution.html">Cisco Cloud Index</a>, which estimates that more than half of all computing workloads will be running in data centers by 2014, and that the daily traffic conducted on cloud services of various types will amount to 1.6 zettabytes per year. My math may be off a bit, but compare it to the scale of your average hard drive &#8212; a zettabyte amounts to a billion terabytes, or a trillion gigabytes. Cisco describes it as enough data to amount to four days of high-quality video streaming for every person on Earth.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a serious opportunity, no doubt. The question is whether or not Cisco can exploit it in a manner that moves the needle. Doing so is an important part of the strategy that Chambers set forth as part of the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111110/how-ya-like-cisco-now/">epic restructuring</a> that has been going on at Cisco since last year. Investors seem to like what they see, as Cisco shares are trading at $18.80 today, which is up 41 percent from a recent 52-week low. As turnarounds go, it does look like progress.</p>

It&#8217;s viewed as overpriced, and not just by <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111028/nokias-lumia-new-dawn-or-dawn-of-the-dead/">analysts who voiced that concern within days of the device&#8217;s debut</a>.</p>
<p>Nokia&#8217;s carrier partners are now complaining as well. Speaking to Telecoms.com, Simon Lee-Smith, GM of Devices at Telefónica, said that the Lumia 800 is just too damn pricey to succeed. </p>
<p>“If Nokia wants to sell in volume, they need to bring out devices which are cost-competitive,&#8221; <a href="http://www.telecoms.com/36101/nokia-smartphones-%E2%80%9Ctoo-expensive%E2%80%9D-says-telefonica-handset-chief/">Lee-Smith said</a>. “[Their high-end devices] are not yet at the right price point.&#8221;</p>
<p>And with the Lumia 800 priced at €420 / $577 US (pre-tax and pre-subsidy), he does have a point. Though the hardware is slick &#8212; very slick, actually &#8212; the Lumia is really just an &#8220;as good as&#8221; device with nothing to differentiate it from the competition. It&#8217;s table stakes, and costly ones at that. And that may make it a tough sell &#8212; unless Nokia heeds the advice of Lee-Smith and others and drops its price.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/logo_ibm-275x144.jpg" alt="" title="logo_ibm" width="275" height="144" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1903" />Computing giant IBM and the British telecom concern Cable &#038; Wireless say they&#8217;re collaborating to build a cloud computing system that would monitor the power usage of some 50 million smart electrical meters in the UK.</p>
<p>The idea, they say, is to use cloud computing to monitor and analyze power use at British homes and businesses, as part of an overall plan to reduce the country&#8217;s energy use and therefore its carbon footprint.</p>
<p>Several existing wireless players have tossed their hats in the ring to build smart meter systems, including BT, Telefonica and Vodafone. They all want a piece of a big UK government contract that could be worth as much as $14 billion to install smart meters in every home by 2020 as part of a wider plan to reduce its carbon emissions by 80 percent by the year 2050.</p>
<p>IBM and C&#038;W say their plan, which they call the UK Smart Energy Cloud, will gather data many times a day from smart meters around the country and store it in a cloud hosted in the UK. The data would then go to power utilities for analysis, to make sure customers are billed according to their usage.</p>
<p>IBM is also involved in a nationwide <a href="http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/26596.wss">smart grid project in Malta </a> and has a hand in a <a href="http://www-01.ibm.com/software/success/cssdb.nsf/CS/CSDY-78WUDJ?OpenDocument&#038;Site=gicss67eu&#038;cty=en_us">pilot project in Denmark</a>. C&#038;W has more than 1,000 network sites, and many, it says, are located at electrical substations. IBM and C&#038;W would essentially become a middle man, saving UK power retailers from having to make huge investments in computing and communications infrastructure.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s according to Susquehanna analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro (and AT&#038;T, which confirmed that percentage to me), who doesn&#8217;t see the launch of the iPhone on Verizon as <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100525/att-verizon-iphone/">a catastrophic event</a> for AT&#038;T at all.  He thinks the carrier stands to lose two million iPhone users at most to Verizon&#8211;hardly a mass exodus.</p>
<p>AT&#038;T&#8217;s decision last year to accelerate upgrade eligibility for iPhone customers, making it easier for them to get the iPhone 4 when Apple released it, is proving a wise move indeed. What better deterrent to switching networks than the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100521/att-jacks-smartphone-early-termination-fee-to-325/">carrier&#8217;s $325 early termination fee</a>?</p>
<p>In all likelihood, iPhone subscriber churn will be no worse at AT&#038;T than it has been at other carriers that have lost iPhone exclusivity. As Matthew Key, CEO of Telefónica Europe, <a href="http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&amp;q=cache:bLlDG0Jxbc4J:www.telefonica.com/en/shareholders_investors/pdf/rdos09t4-transcript.pdf+%22very+comfortable+with+our+iPhone+volumes%22&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=us&amp;pid=bl&amp;srcid=ADGEESj_tG1l6TMK0hm1ambPQiCPnGqxSCUg93y-12xZjjCLEPslrZQe8qk94t_YtgbZO8ykQWy_iHekEmFumEwXb6FCMG96LzVyV1hdvDLwlN9o_dyQ9zvPn3k-VnuJdU2xzqbKDuRI&amp;sig=AHIEtbS8sJwEhZerqeylMStRkGCRbeQhmA">said during a February 2010 earnings call</a>, “Ever since Vodafone has started selling the iPhone in January, we see absolutely no evidence of people leaving us, churning on the iPhone going back to Orange or Vodafone, so [we are] very comfortable with our iPhone volumes. Within three months the Taiwanese hardware manufacturer will have built three million to four million iPhones, they say, adding that production should top 10 million by mid-2011.</p>
<p>Another Verizon (VZ) iPhone rumor to add to the pile, with a few caveats: Market source reports from Taiwanese trade publications like DigiTimes are sometimes dubious. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100923/qotd-verizon-hasnt-earned-the-iphone-yet/">Remarks by Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg</a> this week suggest that the iPhone isn’t headed to the carrier’s network in the near future&#8211;certainly not as soon as this DigiTimes report suggests. “We would love to carry [the iPhone], but we have to earn it,” he said. “I can’t speak for Apple.”</p>
<p>That comment was widely interpreted to mean that Verizon hasn’t yet earned the right to carry the device. Which might be the case&#8211;unless this was simply a bit of misdirection from Seidenberg. In any event, the fact that Pegatron is said to be ramping up to build a CDMA iPhone doesn’t necessarily mean the device is destined for Verizon. As I’ve noted here before, it could be intended for Sprint (S)&#8211;or a foreign carrier like China Telecom, KDDI (Japan) or Telefonica (Mexico).</p>

And now it seems that day has finally come. </p>
<p>Shares in the handset maker fell some 23 percent last week amid concerns about increased competition from Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system, which is being rolled out on a number of devices at a variety of carriers, including Palm partner Sprint (S). </p>
<p>This morning, analysts at Citigroup (C) cut their recommendations to sell from hold on Palm (PALM) while simultaneously raising their rating on Motorola (MOT) because of its &#8220;compelling&#8221; new Android handset, Droid. </p>
<p>&#8220;Motorola is launching of one of the most compelling offerings at [a] time when many investors have given up on the company’s handsets,&#8221; Citigroup analyst Jim Suva wrote in a research note. </p>
<p>&#8220;The revolution of product and application service offerings,&#8221; Suva added, &#8220;is going to start to crack open the enterprise door and could pose a risk for BlackBerry. Major shifts in promotion support creating a promotion commotion in the months ahead favor Motorola and post a challenge for RIMM and PALM.&#8221;</p>
<p>Over at CL King, analyst Lawrence Harris is similarly dubious of Palm’s prospects in the months ahead. Noting that Sprint executive David Owens said last week that the carrier plans to peddle a number of new Android devices from HTC next year, Harris sees unfavorable implications for Palm. </p>
<p>&#8220;Historically, Sprint has been Palm’s largest customer. Indeed, in the August quarter Sprint accounted for 85 percent of Palm’s revenues,&#8221; Harris wrote in a note to investors. &#8220;In FY09 (May) Sprint represented 43 percent of total Palm sales. Sprint has a U.S. exclusive on both the Pre and the Pixi through calendar year end. The Pixi will be launched at Sprint on November 15 for $99.99. The Pixi is fairly similar to the $149.99 Pre. Verizon has stated that it will begin offering the Pre in early CY10.&#8221;</p>
<p>Expounding on his analysis, Harris notes that &#8220;According to a report on Mobile Today, a U.K.-based publication, initial sales of the Pre through Telefonica’s O2 unit in the U.K. have been slow. If this report is correct, than the bulk of Palm’s sales over the next few months will probably continue to be generated through Sprint.&#8221;</p>
<p>That Sprint will soon add some slick new Android handsets to its lineup is worrisome, then, indeed. For Palm, it seems,  driving conditions on the road to recovery are looking increasingly hazardous.</p>

In <a href="http://investor.palm.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=394338">a statement</a> issued this morning, the company said Telefónica&#8217;s O2 subsidiary will carry the Pre in the U.K., Germany and Ireland, while its Movistar brand will offer it in Spain. The Pre will arrive at market in those countries in time for the winter holidays. That likely means October, which will give Telefonica enough time to maximize orders in the run-up to Christmas. Telefónica declined to give a price or to say how long its exclusive deal with Palm will last.</p>
<p>For Telefonica, which, through O2 and Movistar, is already the exclusive carrier of Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone in the U.K. and Spain, the deal is another coup. As Mathew Key, chairman of Telefónica Europe, noted in a <a href="http://pressoffice.telefonica.com/documentos/nprensa/PalmPrePRfinal_070709_english.pdf">gloating press release</a>, &#8220;Telefónica is fast becoming the home of the smartphone.&#8221;</p>
<p>And for Palm (PALM), well, it’s another big step on the road to recovery. As CEO  Jon Rubinstein said earlier this year, &#8220;We&#8217;ve been fighting the battle with basically both hands tied behind our back for the past year and half. Now we&#8217;re getting on the playing field, and we&#8217;re going to be extremely competitive. But it&#8217;s the beginning.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Twitter may not have figured out a way to turn a profit yet, but that hasn’t stopped its users from monetizing the site.</p>
<p>Sponsored tweets are becoming more popular. Brands are recruiting well-known Twitterers to spread the word about a specific product or service. For example, Marcelo Tas, a Brazilian television personality, signed a deal with Telefonica (TAR) to help pitch its new Internet and phone service.</p>
<p>But marketers aren’t just looking for celebrities with hundreds of thousands of followers. They are also going after Web personalities with a more targeted following.</p>
<p>Enter Melanie Notkin, the 40-year-old New York entrepreneur behind the site SavvyAuntie.com. She has built a community of what she calls PANKs (Professional Aunt, No Kids). She offers advice on things like gifts an aunt could buy her niece or nephew.<br />

<p>No matter&#8211;it appears as though <a href="http://www.palminfocenter.com/news/9706/movistar-picks-up-the-palm-pre-in-spain-and-latin-america/">the Spanish media have taken the liberty of doing it for the company</a>. According to a number of <a href="http://news.google.com/news?ned=us&amp;hl=es&amp;ncl=d9RHgWJxBrOYlbMBQwwt1_8bJsGXM">Spanish news  outlets</a>, the carrier has negotiated an exclusive deal with Palm (PALM) to distribute the new handset in Spain and Latin America, and perhaps in England as well. If these reports prove true, the Pre will be <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http://www.expansion.com/2009/03/10/empresas/telecomunicaciones/1236721393.html&amp;langpair=es%7Cen%22%22">sold by Telefónica&#8217;s subsidiary brands, Movistar (Spain and Latin America) and O2 (England).</a> Quite a coup for the carrier, which presumably beat out rival Vodafone (VOD) for the privilege.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src='http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2008/06/iphone_international_illo.jpg' class='centered' style="border: 1px solid #000;" alt='iphone_international_illo.jpg' />With less than a week to go before Apple CEO Steve Jobs’s June 9 Worldwide Developers Conference keynote address and the expected debut of the 3G iPhone&#8211;and <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-9958320-37.html">perhaps the Apple App Store</a> and <a href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/06/03/rumor-mac-os-x-10-6-to-debut-at-wwdc-08/">Mac OS X 10.6</a> as well&#8211;the company has finally closed a deal that will bring the device to Japan, one of the world&#8217;s largest and most demanding mobile-phone markets.</p>
<p>Softbank (SFTBF), Japan’s No. 3 wireless provider, broke the news in <a href="http://www.softbankmobile.co.jp/en/news/press/2008/20080604_01/">a spartan press release</a> that would do even Apple (AAPL), a company renowned for its minimalist gadgets, proud. If ever there was a one-button press release, this is it:</p>

SOFTBANK MOBILE Corp. today announced it has signed an agreement with Apple® to bring the iPhone™ to Japan later this year.&#8221;

<p>Well, there you go. Presumably, Jobs will fill us in on the details on Monday. In any event, lining up a wireless partner in Japan is an important step for Apple, which hopes to gain a 1% share of the global cellphone business by the end of 2008. Nomura Research Institute estimates that <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/phones/2007-08-21-japan-iphone_N.htm">Apple can sell 2 million to 3 million iPhones annually in Japan</a>–-about 5% of the market&#8211;if it plays its cards right.</p>
<p>Also announced this morning, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/idINL0448990120080604?rpc=44">a deal with Telefonica</a> (TEM), which has agreed to distribute the iPhone in Spain through its Movistar subsidiary. Together the two deals bring <a href="http://aaplinvestors.net/facts/iphoneintl/">the iPhone distributor count up to an even 70</a>, with more countries presumably waiting in the wings.</p>
