Sony Swings to Loss, Slashes Full-Year Forecast

Sony Corp. said Thursday it veered into a fiscal third-quarter net loss of more than $2 billion and forecast a much wider full-year loss than previously expected, dragged down by losses in its television business and the impact of the strong yen on its European operations.

Samsung Electronics Co. said Friday it estimates record earnings for the fourth-quarter as robust sales of smartphones helped it ride out slower economic growth in its major global markets.

Sony Corp. said Thursday it slipped to a net loss in its fiscal first quarter, squeezed by the impact of the March 11 disasters, and lowered its earnings forecast for the fiscal year, citing weak sales of televisions as well as the yen’s strength versus the euro.

Sharp, LG Warn of TV Glut

Sharp Corp. and LG Electronics Inc. warned that a glut of inventory for flat-panel display televisions will continue to pressure prices during the critical year-end holiday shopping period. The inventory build-up of liquid crystal display televisions is the result of a surge in production by global TV makers this year following a period of reduced output in the aftermath of the financial crisis, when consumer spending plunged.

Adobe Freshens AIR for Multiscreen App Development

At its MAX 2010 conference this morning, Adobe is introducing a handful of new tools and services with the aim of becoming the app development platform of choice across all digital devices. Adobe’s updated AIR 2.5, part of its Flash Platform, will let developers leverage existing code to build standalone applications for smartphones, tablets, desktop machines and televisions. Adobe is also unveiling InMarket, an app distribution service, and new tool suites for digital publishers and enterprises.

Falling Prices Starting to Hit Electronics Retailers

Shoppers are stocking up on consumer electronics, but rapidly falling prices for televisions, computers and other gadgets are adding to the woes of recession-scarred retailers. Industry bellwether Best Buy Co. said Tuesday that revenues grew and earnings quadrupled for its third quarter ending in November, citing higher sales of inexpensive netbook computers and smaller flat-panel televisions.

“Vidification” and Samsung’s Rosy TV Outlook

With the economy affecting all manner of consumer spending, it’s a little surprising to hear upbeat commentary from the flat-panel sector. But according to Scott Birnbaum, vice president of Samsung’s LCD unit, its sales are benefiting from “vidification,” a term he uses to describe consumers trying to create a big-screen experience at home.
