While it’s hard to believe that a decade has passed since the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, the 10th anniversary is fast approaching.

One of the myriad of tributes will be “Rebirth,” a documentary film that employs time-lapse photography and also just time passing in the lives of those who lost loved ones in the tragedy.

The film will get both a theatrical and a television release around September 11, and it looks like it deserves it.

There might have been tweets right from the Pakistani city of Abbottabad at the time of the attack, but this disturbing ABC News video from inside the house where the U.S. raid on al Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden took place depicts it in ways 140 characters simply cannot.

Warning: It’s a bloody scene in what appears to be a bedroom.

The Hindustan Times reports that Mohammed Peerbhoy, who is currently in custody in Delhi for allegedly serving as the “media chief” for the Indian Mujahideen, a terror group charged with the September 2008 bombings in the city, turns out to be a former principal software engineer with Yahoo in Pune.

According to the story, Peerbhoy is being charged with sending IM warning messages just before the blasts ripped apart the city.

Last week, the U.S. senator sent a letter to Google CEO Eric Schmidt decrying YouTube as a clearinghouse for terrorist propaganda videos and calling upon Google to remove them. “… Islamist terrorist organizations use YouTube to disseminate their propaganda, enlist followers and provide weapons training–activities that are all essential to terrorist activity,” Lieberman, Chairman of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, wrote. “According to testimony received by our committee, the online content produced by al-Qaeda and other Islamist terrorist organizations can play a significant role in the process of radicalization, the end point of which is the planning and execution of a terrorist attack. YouTube also, unwittingly, permits Islamist terrorist groups to maintain an active, pervasive and amplified voice, despite military setbacks or successful operations by the law enforcement and intelligence communities.”

Lieberman would like Google (GOOG) to smoke these YouTube terrorists out of their holes. To that end, he provided Schmidt with a list of offensive videos. Some featured gratuitous violence or hate speech and were removed. But many more featured legal non-violent, non-hate speech. These YouTube refused to remove because they don’t violate its Community Guidelines.

“While we respect and understand [Lieberman's] views, YouTube encourages free speech and defends everyone’s right to express unpopular points of view,” YouTube said in a post to its company blog. “We believe that YouTube is a richer and more relevant platform for users precisely because it hosts a diverse range of views, and rather than stifle debate we allow our users to view all acceptable content and make up their own minds. Of course, users are always free to express their disagreement with a particular video on the site, by leaving comments or their own response video. That debate is healthy.”

And so yesterday the Federal Communications Commission announced plans to develop an emergency-alert system that would broadcast SMS messages to cellphones and other mobile devices wherever a crisis occurs. The Commercial Mobile Alert System, as it’s been dubbed, will deliver three different types of text alerts to mobile phone subscribers: presidential alerts concerning terrorist attacks and whatnot; imminent threat alerts warning of natural disasters; and Amber Alert child abduction warnings.

Sounds like a nice comprehensive program. Too bad you won’t see it for another two years, at least. Unless you happen to live in a region like Contra Costa County in Northern California, where a tech-savvy local government is already hard at work on its own geographically targeted emergency alert system.
