		<description><![CDATA[It might seem like there are more mobile messaging apps out there than there are friends to send texts to. Here’s a guide to how they work.]]></description>
				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Smartphone messaging apps are all the rage these days. </p>
<p>But for some people they’re a mystery. Why would you use a messaging app when your phone’s SMS text messaging function is fine enough for photos and text, or if you use iMessage on the iPhone?</p>
<p>The point of these new smartphone messaging apps is to go beyond that, by letting you send different kinds of media, connect easily and cheaply with international friends, and even send pictures of yourself that will self-combust a few seconds after they&#8217;ve been opened. They also create new, mini social networks that companies hope make users stick around.</p>
<p>These apps, for the most part, use data to send the messages, so they won’t add to your tally if you have a monthly limit on SMS through your wireless carrier.</p>
<p>This week, I channeled my inner teenager and dove into a handful of different messaging apps, including WhatsApp, Snapchat and a new one called Burn Note. I see some of the benefit to using these apps. Some features are useful, like being able to loop in friends who own various phones on the same messaging thread. Others are just fun, like the app that let me doodle on a Google search pic before sending it off to a friend.</p>

<p>But their usefulness depends a lot on whether your friends and family are using the same apps. Otherwise, the conversations in the apps stall, which happened to me. And it can be a little distracting, to say the least, to have messages flying through a second or third app on the phone.</p>
<p>Here’s a guide to help you evaluate how they work before you commit to using one. </p>
<h4 class="subhed">Adding Multimedia to Messages</h4>
<p>One of the most popular message apps available is WhatsApp, which has been around since 2009, and runs on iOS, Android, BlackBerry and Windows phones. It costs 99 cents to download, and WhatsApp has said that it plans to introduce a small annual fee to users in some countries.</p>

<p>WhatsApp is super simple in design, and yet it goes beyond regular old text messages with options to send &#8212; in addition to photos and videos &#8212; audio notes, contact cards and an active map image that pinpoints your location. It pulls in local business data, so I was able to get specific and message a friend my location at a Subway sandwich shop. </p>
<p>WhatsApp has a big international user base; two of my most active WhatsApp friends included a regular international traveler, who was in Vietnam at the time, and a friend from Canada.</p>
<p>WhatsApp worked fine for me, and I&#8217;ve continued to use it with at least one friend who regularly pings me through the app. My only gripe about the app was that the photos I took and sent through the app weren’t saved to my iPhone’s camera roll.</p>
<p>Another new app for multimedia is called MessageMe. MessageMe launched last month, and is available on iPhone and Android phones. Unlike WhatsApp, MessageMe is free to download. And MessageMe lets you doodle on the images you send. I sent an ailing co-worker a picture of chicken soup I found through Google search, and scribbled on it: “Feel better!”</p>
<p>MessageMe also allows you to send song excerpts directly through the app. From there, the recipient can buy the song from iTunes or Google Play.</p>

<p>Of the two, I used WhatsApp more, mostly because I had more friends using the service. But I prefer MessageMe’s design and features.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Making Your Messages Disappear</h4>
<p>A growing trend in messaging is sending images and text that will vanish after the recipient has had the chance to view them &#8212; something that addresses some privacy concerns and raises other issues, like illicit-photo sharing among teen users.</p>
<p>A well-known app with this core feature is Snapchat. Free to download, it’s available on iOS and Android devices.</p>
<p>With Snapchat, you snap a picture or video from the app, and then determine the length of time the viewer can see it, from one to 10 seconds. You send it off, and shortly after the recipient opens the message, it disappears. If you want to get creative, you can also doodle or scribble text on the photo message. One friend sent me a Snapchat of his poker hand with the text “Not Winning.”</p>
<p>I just don’t understand why I’d use this on a regular basis, although I see the appeal for people leaving digital footprints they are worried about others seeing. Usually if I share a smartphone photo with friends, it’s because something made me think of them, or it’s a particularly cool image. And I’m okay with those people having that picture.</p>

<p>And, let&#8217;s say I did want to share a self-combusting pic: Snapchat users still have the ability to capture a “screen shot” of the image sent to them, if they’re quick enough. </p>
<p>A newer app that offers disappearing messages is Burn Note, which was spawned from an email service of the same name. These are text-only messages with a view time of up to 120 seconds. The messages first appear as black boxes. Pressing on your phone’s touchscreen will unveil the text within the boxes.</p>
<p>Burn Note lets you create a password for conversations as an additional layer to ensure privacy. There’s also a checkbox at the bottom of the app that&#8217;s meant to prevent messages from being copied, but I was still able to capture a screen shot of these messages.</p>
<p>The bottom line is, even if a messaging app promises to erase your messages for you, there are still ways in which they can be saved.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Payments and Group Messages</h4>
<p>Remember GroupMe, the app that made group messaging easy and then was acquired by Skype (which was acquired by Microsoft) in 2011? This app is still around, and despite the fact that others have crowded into the same space, it has some new features that are worth checking out.</p>

<p>The main feature of GroupMe, which is free to use, is that friends with different devices can all be on the same thread. So, even if you have an iPhone, one friend has an Android device and another is using a feature phone, you’ll all get the messages. Whether GroupMe uses data service or SMS, however, depends partly on the kind of device you’re using.</p>
<p>Prior to doing research for this column, I hadn’t actively used GroupMe for about a year, and I was surprised to find that I liked it better than before. This time, I started a group with three friends to organize upcoming weekend plans. It worked well for us, except for one friend who said that the deluge of messages used up all of the memory allowed for texts on her flip phone.</p>
<p>GroupMe now lets you create a tab among friends &#8212; let’s say you’re out to dinner, and someone comes up short &#8212; and charge everyone&#8217;s credit cards from the app, provided that they’ve attached their payment information to the app.</p>
<p>This isn’t a new concept. An app called Venmo, to name just one, allows shared bill payments via text message. But it’s new to GroupMe. I created a bill on the app and sent it to my friends, but I’d have to wait for two or more people to “split in” before I could collect from them.</p>
<p>GroupMe also has a new feature for photos, provided you’re using the GroupMe app and you’re not on a feature phone. If you and your friends share a series of photos during your group conversation, you can conveniently swipe to the left to see all of the pictures arranged in a gallery on the side, instead of swiping up through the conversation to find that one shared photo you liked.</p>
<p>A lot of these messaging apps are stepping on one another with feature sets: WhatsApp offers group messaging as well, and the creator of MessageMe says the company plans to introduce bill-splitting to the app. </p>
<p>So, is it worth it to use another messaging app aside from your phone’s built-in capabilities? It ultimately depends on how valuable the extra features are to you &#8212; and whether the people in your work or social life are using them, too.</p>
<p><strong>Correction</strong>: An earlier version of this article stated that both MessageMe and WhatsApp have indicated they will introduce bill-splitting to their apps. While MessageMe plans to do so, WhatsApp&#8217;s co-founder has said the company believes mobile payments to be a possible area for monetization in the future. </p>

<p>Last week, I motored on down to Evernote&#8217;s spanking (and quite delightful) new offices in Redwood City, Calif., to talk to Phil Libin, its CEO and co-founder, about what has been happening of late at the popular note-taking software startup.</p>
<p>Things have recently been made more interesting with the entry of search giant Google into the sector, with a renewed competing mobile app effort called Keep (which is really a version of its older Notebook offering) for the Android mobile operating system. </p>
<p>Libin seemed sanguine about the move, noting that Evernote&#8217;s Android app has a much better user base than Keep. Instead, he said that the company &#8212; which has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121130/evernote-closes-85-million-round/">attracted about $250 million in total funding</a> that has valued it at <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120503/phil-libin-and-the-refusal-to-pivot-evernote-now-valued-at-1-billion/">close to $2 billion</a> &#8212; is more focused on bringing out new versions of Evernote, which allow a user to save text, Web links, photos and more, as well as on continuing to widen its productivity-app portfolio.</p>
<p>Also a priority is a recently launched <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121204/going-beyond-personal-productivity-evernote-launches-app-for-businesses/">premium, business-oriented version</a> of Evernote, as well as even more international expansion, which makes up an increasingly large part of its user base of 45 million (a small number of whom currently pay to upgrade).</p>
<p>Libin talked about all this and more, including continuing to tout his &#8220;100-year&#8221; strategy for the company (it&#8217;s good to plan ahead!) in this video interview:</p>

<p>Sitting in front of a spectacular view of San Francisco at his home this afternoon, former Square COO Keith Rabois looks spent. </p>
<p>He is just recovering from a bout of pneumonia, which would be bad enough, but it&#8217;s clear from his tense and unusually &#8212; for him &#8212; disheveled appearance that the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130125/keith-rabois-long-statement-on-personal-relationship-with-square-employee-sexual-harassment-claims-that-feels-like-a-shakedown/">sexual harassment claim</a> made by a current male employee at the San Francisco payments startup has taken its toll on the typically hard-charging exec who is not known for suffering fools.</p>
<p>But, now, given a judgement he made to continue in a personal and physical relationship with that unnamed junior staffer after he was hired at Square, Rabois feels both foolish and also angry. </p>
<p>&#8220;At the end of the day, this is personally embarrassing to me, because when anyone&#8217;s life is exposed to a public forum, it creates quite a damaging situation,&#8221; said Rabois. &#8220;As we looked at it, it was going to become a distraction that was going to hurt the company.&#8221;</p>
<p>It appears as if he wanted to stay &#8212; he shrugs when directly asked about it, though he will not say so explicitly. But, Rabois finally agreed with Square&#8217;s top management, including CEO and founder Jack Dorsey, that is was better that he leave.</p>
<p>&#8220;It was very clear once this outrageous demand was made, instead of building great products, it would be all about that,&#8221; he said.</p>
<p>That said, after an internal investigation, the company is backing him in the expected filing of a lawsuit from the employee, who has threatened a panoply of explosive allegations against him and the company that Rabois said again are a &#8220;fiction.&#8221;</p>
<p>He declined to show me any texts or emails between the two, but did recount the relationship in a blog post on Tumblr earlier today. </p>
<p>Richard Curiale, outside counsel for Square and also Rabois, said that the company had been approached about two weeks ago by New York lawyer Steven Berger, claiming the company knew of and did nothing to stop sexual harassment by Rabois and demanding a multi-million dollar settlement. </p>
<p>Curiale said he found no evidence in his investigation so far of anything except a &#8220;welcome&#8221; relationship that ended. He had even agreed to make Rabois available for a deposition with Berger, but the offer was refused. </p>
<p>I have an email into Berger for comment, which has thus far been unanswered. But Square has said it will fight any lawsuit filed and is currently supporting Rabois. </p>
<p>&#8220;I have not as yet found any conduct that is illegal and therefore there is no adverse relationship between Keith and Square,&#8221; said Curiale. &#8220;We don&#8217;t pay for claims that have no merit to them, because it amounts to extortion.&#8221;</p>
<p>Perhaps so, but it also amounts to a very juicy story &#8212; the second such major blowup in Silicon Valley in a year. The other &#8212; now a lawsuit alleging gender discrimination and retaliation, and a countersuit &#8212; between the well-known venture capital firm, Kleiner Perkins, and former partner Ellen Pao, is ongoing.</p>
<p>The particulars of the Rabois situation, per his side of the story, which he claims is supported by much evidence, is of a social and physical relationship with a man he met several years ago.</p>
<p>While he would not call their relationship dating, it was close and personal, including taking this man out with him to social events. </p>
<p>The problem came when he recommended this man for a job at Square and he was hired. The company was much smaller then, about 30 people, but as it grew Rabois insists he had no direct oversight of the employee and also did not treat him differently from others he managed at the company.</p>
<p>Rabois claims he gave him advice, as he did other employees, but neither helped or hindered the man in his efforts to advance. </p>
<p>The man and Rabois were still seeing each other socially until December, when the relationship cooled. </p>
<p>And then came the lawsuit threat two weeks ago, which Rabois said &#8220;stunned&#8221; him. </p>

<p>Spokesman Ricardo Reyes said that &#8220;what we have here at most is bad judgement and we will defend ourselves.&#8221;</p>
<p>In this Rabois agrees, as he fields emails of support from his wide range of friends and colleagues in tech, where he is well known as an entrepreneur and angel investor. </p>
<p>&#8220;I have several good ideas of what I want to do next,&#8221; he said. </p>

<p>Another week and yet another new design for the Yahoo homepage is being tested out on users &#8212; this time, it appears to be one (which you can see below) that looks a lot like Microsoft Windows 8&rsquo;s touchscreen tiled approach (which is here).</p>
<p>After already putting out tests in the field with infinite scrolling, a simplified logo and giving search more prominence, the Silicon Valley Internet giant is apparently testing an even more drastically different redesign of its key landing page &#8212; one that seems to be aimed at being consumed on touch-responsive, non-PC devices.</p>
<p>As you can see from the screenshots below &#8212; which a user sent me, and which look exactly like what many Yahoo sources have described to me recently &#8212; the design uses big photos tiled across the top of the page. It suggests an ethos that is reminiscent of the new approach by Microsoft, as well as many others, such as Flipboard and Pinterest.</p>
<p>All of these encourage users to reach out and touch, scroll and swoosh. In fact, there are side-swiping arrows on the new Yahoo design.</p>
<p>Also part of the look, which is still being tweaked: More simplified icons for various Yahoo properties, fewer text links, additional social and personalization aspects and &#8212; perhaps most importantly &#8212; no advertising module at the very top. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s interesting, since Yahoo&#8217;s homepage is a big moneymaker for the company, because of its huge daily traffic. Thus, any new homepage design will have both massive consumer and financial impact on the company.</p>
<p>Sources said that one possible plan is to move from several 300 by 250-sized ad units to a single 300 by 600, which other sites like AOL have shifted toward. Such a change will not be without controversy for marketers.</p>
<p>It will also present a fresh selling challenge for new COO Henrique De Castro, who arrives at Yahoo from Google next week, and who will be helming sales efforts. (Hey, Henrique &#8212; get ready for my upcoming 360-degree profile of you!)</p>
<p>The latest redo is now being iterated under the regime of new CEO Marissa Mayer, under an awfully confident codename, Project Homerun. We&#8217;ll see if it is San Francisco Giant&#8217;s Panda-worthy, but sources said it is set to be released widely within the next two months. </p>
<p>But, while some <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marissa-mayers-new-yahoocom-homepage-2012-10">new designs that have surfaced</a> have been closer to the current version of Yahoo, the latest design is a more significant shift that would clearly lend itself well to mobile touchscreens, especially on increasingly popular tablets.</p>
<p>Along with Pinterest, Flipboard and Windows 8, other sites have done this, of course, most particularly pioneering content design done several years ago by BermanBraun&#8217;s Wonderwall for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise, since Mayer declared in a recent earnings call &#8212; articulating what many desktop-trapped Silicon Valley Internet giants have also done recently &#8212; that Yahoo was going to also veer toward a &#8220;mobile first&#8221; sensibility.</p>
<p>&#8220;Yahoo will have to be a predominantly mobile company,&#8221; she <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121022/liveblogging-the-debut-of-yahoo-ceo-mayer-tailor-made-for-marissa/">said in the third-quarter earnings call</a>. </p>

<p>Nuance on Wednesday is showing off the first update to Swype since <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111006/nuance-to-buy-swype-virtual-keyboard-maker-for-100-million/">paying more than $100 million to acquire the virtual keyboard company</a> last year.</p>
<p>The new software adds, among other things, the ability to predict what word comes next, in addition to the one being entered. That&#8217;s a feature popular on other software keyboard products, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110714/swiftkey-adds-yet-another-virtual-keyboard-option-for-android/">such as SwiftKey</a>.</p>
<p>Under the hood, Nuance is merging Swype&#8217;s code base with Nuance&#8217;s algorithms for making sense of typed, written and spoken words. Nuance also had its own Swype-like product, known as Trace, which can still be found on other devices, including Samsung&#8217;s Galaxy S III.</p>
<p>The two companies were using separate means of predicting text. Nuance had been focused on statistical models of language, while Swype was investing a lot in models that adapt to individual users. The new software combines both approaches.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those two things together create a living, learning keyboard that gets better the more you use it,&#8221; said Nuance VP of Mobile Products Aaron Sheedy. With a user&#8217;s approval it can even learn based on past use by scanning email, tweets and text messages.</p>
<p>The new software will be available as a beta starting Wednesday, and will also be available to device makers to start preloading on their phones.</p>
<p>With the new version, customers who have Swype preloaded on their phones can now try out the latest betas. In the past, the betas worked on Android phones that didn&#8217;t already have Swype preloaded.</p>
<p>The company also sees many more opportunities down the road.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a group here who has been working on text input for almost 20 years,&#8221; Sheedy said. &#8220;That’s quite a unique group of engineers and linguists.&#8221;</p>

<p>Yahoo&#8217;s embattled CEO Scott Thompson (pictured here) is set to step down from his job at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, in what will be dramatic end to a controversy over a fake computer science degree that he had on his bio, according to multiple sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The pair will apparently say he is departing for &#8220;personal reasons.&#8221; Sources said that Thompson will be claiming to be leaving due to a serious illness that he recently discovered he had.</p>
<p>But the evolving crisis &#8212; which is just over a week old &#8212; centered on his botched resume and how he handled the thorny issue is the key reason for the abrupt end to his tenure as a CEO.</p>
<p>Thompson&#8217;s likely replacement on an interim basis will be Yahoo&#8217;s global media head <a href="http://pressroom.yahoo.net/pr/ycorp/ross-levinsohn.aspx">Ross Levinsohn</a>, who most recently also ran its Americas unit, including its advertising sales. </p>
<p>In addition to the management upheaval, Yahoo&#8217;s board is closing in on a settlement with the man who discovered Thompson&#8217;s misstep, activist shareholder Daniel Loeb of Third Point, said sources.</p>
<p>The situation could change, since Yahoo&#8217;s full board still has to meet this morning to officially approve the sweeping changes at the long-troubled company.</p>
<p>But, if it is, this development goes a long way toward fixing some of what has been ailing Yahoo recently.</p>
<p><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120513/exclusive-yahoos-thompson-out-levinsohn-in-board-settlement-with-loeb-nears-completion/danloeb_4-3/" rel="attachment wp-att-207306"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/05/DanLoeb_4.gif" alt="" title="DanLoeb_4" width="142" height="198" class="alignleft size-full wp-image-207306" /></a></p>
<p>And it&#8217;ll also be a stunning victory for Loeb (pictured here), since the pugnacious hedge fund investor is set to get three board seats from a slate proposed by him as part of a proxy fight aimed at Yahoo. The new Yahoo directors will be media exec Michael Wolf and turnaround specialist Harry Wilson. Loeb&#8217;s fourth selection &#8212; former NBC head Jeff Zucker &#8212; will withdraw.</p>
<p>The five current Yahoo directors &#8212; who were to step down at the company&#8217;s annual meeting this summer &#8212; will leave the board effective immediately, sources said, to make way for the Third Point selections.</p>
<p>Finally, Yahoo&#8217;s recently added director Fred Amoroso will be named chairman of the board. </p>
<p>Amoroso is the director who has been conducting the investigation into the issues raised by Loeb about how the fake academic credentials got in Thompson&#8217;s public bios, as well as in Yahoo&#8217;s regulatory filings, and also the hurried circumstances around his hiring in January.</p>
<p>Those mysteries &#8212; read, <em>screw-ups</em> &#8212; might never be solved now, although Thompson made a convoluted attempt to explain it all in two awkward employee meetings at the end of last week. In those gatherings, according to numerous sources, he blamed a headhunting firm for introducing the mistake when he was being hired for a job at eBay in the mid-2000 timeframe.</p>
<p>That company, Heidrick and Struggles, slapped back last week with an internal memo, noting that Thompson&#8217;s claim was &#8220;verifiably not true.&#8221; Sources said that Heidrick told Yahoo&#8217;s board that it was in possession of a resume that Thompson had apparently submitted showing the inaccurate CS degree on it.</p>
<p>That memo, impugning Thompson&#8217;s credibility, was one of many that piled on to create an impossible situation for the Yahoo board, related to his leadership ability going forward.</p>
<p>Thompson had also previously issued a Yahoo statement, in which he apologized for the &#8220;distraction&#8221; caused by the problematic resume, but not for the mistake itself.</p>
<p>And, initially, Yahoo &#8212; under his direction &#8212; had called the borked resume an &#8220;inadvertent error.&#8221;</p>
<p>Such fumbling to fix the situation was among the many other issues that the board has been considering relating the ability of Thompson to remain in his job. Also of importance was the sinking morale of Yahoo employees, who had largely rejected Thompson&#8217;s excuses in the ResuMess scandal.</p>
<p>Internal message boards at Yahoo lit up all last week, with staffers largely rejecting his explanations. In addition, a number of top execs and engineers approached the board calling for Thompson&#8217;s firing.</p>
<p>While that&#8217;s not precisely what happened here, it&#8217;s close enough to describe Thompson&#8217;s departure as inevitable. </p>

<p>All this change comes in the wake of a massive restructuring he was in the midst of at Yahoo, after 2,000 employee layoffs.</p>
<p>Thompson was pushing forward a vision of adding a much more significant data and commerce element to Yahoo&#8217;s largely ad-based business. </p>
<p>That is likely to be less stressed under media-focused Levinsohn, who will be essentially trying out to be the permanent CEO.</p>
<p>Well known in the media and advertising communities, he has worked at a number of big online efforts over many years. </p>
<p>According to his bio at Yahoo, where he <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20101027/its-now-official-yahoo-hires-ross-levinsohn-to-head-key-americas-unit/">arrived in 2010</a>:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>He previously served as the President of News Corporation&#8217;s Fox Interactive Media, where he was responsible for the day-to-day operations, strategy and acquisitions that helped transformed the company into a leader in digital media. He also held senior management positions with AltaVista, an early pioneer and leader in search, CBS Sportsline where he oversaw all content and development for the top rated sports site, and HBO where he launched and oversaw a unit developing new programming and revenue streams. Levinsohn also was the co-founder and managing director of Fuse Capital, an investment and strategic equity management firm focused on investing in and building digital media and communications companies.  </p>
<p>Levinsohn sits on the board of Freedom Communications and the Bogart Pediatric Cancer Research Program. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from The American University.</p></blockquote>
<p>So far in my checking, Levinsohn&#8217;s resume is accurate. </p>

<p>If you want a quick analysis of why Facebook would <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120409/breaking-facebook-to-acquire-instagram-for-1-billion/">pay $1 billion for popular photo-sharing service Instagram</a>, please ignore the obvious financials that just don&#8217;t add up at all and have most of the typically unshockable digerati shocked by the sheer amount of the price.</p>
<p>Actually, it&#8217;s pretty simple: Photos. Photos. And, oh yes, <em>mobile</em> photos &#8212; lots and lots and lots of them.</p>
<p>Astonishingly, Facebook users already upload an average of more than 250 million images daily, making it the most popular photo-sharing service on the Web. </p>
<p>But it&#8217;s not the best by far and not the most mobile, which is Facebook&#8217;s biggest weakness &#8212; that has been accomplished many others, especially Instagram, the favorite of power users who scoffed at Facebook&#8217;s weak tools. (The <em>horror</em> of no filters!)</p>
<p>Now &#8212; instead of all those billions of juicy digital photos snapped by an ever-growing legion of smartphone users loading up to the beautifully designed Instagram mobile app and living on the servers of the small San Francisco-based start-up &#8212; Facebook has now captured all these memories for its massive social networking site.</p>
<p>And while $1 billion seems an awful lot to pay for that privilege &#8212; Twitter is quaking with &#8220;OMG!&#8221; and &#8220;Wow!&#8221; and &#8220;WTF!&#8221; tweets about the acquisition &#8212; this is apparently priceless for Facebook in a deal that went down quickly and quietly in recent weeks.</p>
<p>That and the fact that the huge sum prevented Instagram from being scooped up by Google.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a clear signal from CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg &#8212; who rules all product efforts at the company &#8212; of his intent to dominate all innovations that have to do with owning the social experience. </p>
<p>Because while many Instagram photos quickly made their way onto Facebook &#8212; sharing on the service, as well as on Twitter, was a big part of the app&#8217;s offering &#8212; the future of the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company is tied to having control over key elements of the user experience. </p>
<p>Of all of those &#8212; communications, status updates, content linking &#8212; it has been photos that have become perhaps the most important part of Facebook, almost since its beginnings. </p>
<p>Photos are what allowed Facebook to grow so quickly and what made it more than just a blue sea of text and links to consumers. Its new Timeline depends on big, pretty photos, and Facebook even recently announced that it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120322/introducing-your-super-large-high-resolution-face-on-facebook/">would allow full-screen viewing</a> of high-resolution photos on its Web site, a pricey endeavor.</p>
<p>So, perhaps it was inevitable that Zuckerberg would pay up for Instagram, too &#8212; he knows a good entrepreneurial success when he sees one and apparently has the power to convince start-ups that he can make their bigger dreams come true.</p>
<p>Whether or not Instagram ever makes money is perhaps beside the point at this moment in time, as Facebook is poised to go public at 100 times the amount it forked over for Instagram. </p>
<p>But that it considers such a purchase worth as much as one percent of its expected valuation says a thousands words. And most of those words are &#8220;mobile&#8221; and &#8220;photo.&#8221;</p>
<p>As <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/benhjacobs/status/189400138521915392">Ben Jacobs noted on Twitter</a>: &#8220;Kodak goes bankrupt and Instagram is worth a billion dollars. 2012, y&#8217;all.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. And, I have no doubt if Zuckerberg could figure out a way to shove all those Kodak moments from analog snapshots onto Facebook easily, he&#8217;d have paid up for that, too.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Turns out Stevie Wonder knew what was up when he just called to say he loved you: Out of all the means of digital communications available to us, the overwhelming majority of users plan to use a smartphone to connect with significant others today. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/OldTelephone.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/OldTelephone-380x253.png" alt="" title="OldTelephone" width="380" height="253" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-174352" /></a></p>
<p>This is according to a new report from Rebtel, a Stockholm-based VoIP company and Skype competitor.</p>
<p>Of all the participants in Rebtel’s recent survey, 79 percent said they planned to celebrate Valentine’s Day in some way, with 56.8 percent indicating their significant other will be away from home today. A full 86.6 percent of those people said they planned to get in touch with their long-distance lover &#8212; which left us scratching our heads a bit about the remaining 13.4 percent who wouldn’t be getting in touch at all. But, hey, not everyone’s into hearts-and-flowers day.</p>
<p>When told they had to choose just one method for communicating with their S.O. away from home, here’s how respondents ranked them:</p>
<p>Mobile phone: 64.3 percent</p>
<p>VoIP calling: 15.4 percent</p>
<p>Landline call: 6.4 percent</p>
<p>Video chat: 4.6 percent</p>
<p>Email: 3.9 percent</p>
<p>SMS: 2.5 percent</p>
<p>Social networks: 1.8 percent</p>
<p>Instant Messenger: 1.1 percent</p>
<p>With lots of free or cheap VoIP calling options out there &#8212; Skype, Rebtel and Viber, to name a few &#8212; it’s somewhat surprising that VoIP service and video chats ranked so far below mobile phone calling, but many consumers might find it easier just to punch in a number, or simply might not be aware of some of the VoIP apps.</p>
<p>And it’s nice to see that face-to-face video chatting ranks somewhere above SMS text messaging, scribbling on a Facebook wall or sending an IM.</p>
<p>For those of you reading this with sinking stomachs &#8212; having just now realized that today is Valentine’s Day &#8212; there are a slew of last-minute applications to bail you out, or buy you some time while you search for real, live, analog gift ideas. Like <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/toms-love-letters/id496218553?mt=8">Tom’s Love Letters</a>, or <a href="http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2400090,00.asp">Lovestagram</a>, an Instagram plugin created by the girlfriend of the one of the founders of the popular photo app. You could also send a love-themed playlist from <a href="http://www.spotify.com/us/start/?utm_source=spotify&#038;utm_medium=web&#038;utm_campaign=start">Spotify</a> or <a href="http://www.rdio.com/#/people/RdioOnRdio/playlists/">Rdio</a>.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When it comes to scouring dating sites, men tend to look at the pictures more, while women’s eyes linger longer on the text.</p>
<p>We probably didn’t need a formal study to tell us that. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/Male-eHarmony.png"><img src="http://allthingsd.com/files/2012/02/Male-eHarmony-233x285.png" alt="" title="Male eHarmony" width="233" height="285" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-171446" /></a></p>
<p>But that’s exactly what <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120105/at-ces-control-your-computer-screen-with-your-gaze/">Tobii</a>, maker of eye-tracking technology, set out to do.</p>
<p>The Sweden-based company, in collaboration with AnswerLab, recently pounced on a bunch of people at a San Francisco coffee shop and asked them to participate in a study in which they’d be examining the dating profiles of members of the opposite sex &#8212; and during the session, their eye movements would be tracked by Tobii’s sensors.</p>
<p>After participants viewed mock-up pages of eHarmony.com and Match.com profiles, the verdict was in: Men spent 65 percent more time than women did reviewing photos in profiles; women spent 50 percent more time reading the text about a potential mate’s background and interests.</p>
<p>Women also spent an average of 84 seconds gazing at a profile to determine if it was a match, compared to 58 seconds for men. </p>
<p>The study also revealed that people tend to like dating profiles that they feel are more reflective of the kind they would build for themselves. For example, people that prefer to share lots of personal info gravitated more toward very personal dating profiles, while those that stick to &#8220;just the facts, ma’am,&#8221; liked profiles that had simpler demographic info and data.</p>
<p>Tobii uses tracking technology that zeroes in on a user’s pupil and calculates the point of gaze using algorithms. For heavy blinkers or those with shifty eyes, the recovery time of Tobii’s sensor is between 100 and 300 milliseconds; it draws an “imaginary box” around the user’s head to account for lots of head movement, as well.</p>

Late last month, the company introduced its X1 Light Eye Tracker, marketed mainly to usability and market researchers.</p>
<p>To demonstrate the usefulness of its eye-tracking tech at the consumer level, Tobii is planning to conduct more studies and present more interesting use cases, Barclay said. The next study, for example, might be even more precise: Instead of examining who is looking at pictures versus text, the next study might shed light on which area of the pictures people’s eyes tend to linger on. <p>Ultimately, these types of studies could be most useful for advertisers, as well as Web companies.</p>
<p>The study showed that when there was a great deal of ad content on the right-hand side of a profile page, participants would be distracted by the ads and avert their eyes from the profile information. Great news for advertisers, but bad news for those who want to remain focused on the task at hand.</p>
<p>It’s important to note that the sample for this study was very small: The company managed to convince more than 40 people to try it out, but had to throw away a handful of samples due to inconclusive data, which can be caused by certain types of glasses, lazy or droopy eyes, or an extreme amount of gaze-shifting. </p>
<p>But Tobii’s Barclay says continued testing could help companies determine monetization strategies and how they might conflict with the ultimate goal of a Web site’s content, or to help advertisers make ads more relevant and boost click-through rates.</p>

<p>While even the most basic phones come with a phone number and the ability to send text messages, an increasing number of people are choosing alternatives such as Google Voice and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110316/ex-palm-team-finds-success-offering-free-calling-and-texting-for-iphone-and-android/">Pinger</a>.</p>
<p>Some do so to avoid a phone and contract entirely, pairing those services with an iPod touch or other device. Others use the alternative services to add a second line to their cellphone or to avoid pricey text message charges.</p>
<p>On Wednesday, Pinger  said it is beefing up its iOS service with the addition of voicemail.</p>
<p>As with all Pinger apps, it&#8217;s free and ad-supported. Existing users who want to use voicemail will be asked to ditch their old Pinger app and <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id470580739?mt=8">download a new one</a>.</p>
<p>Pinger, which has 15 million users overall, is most popular on iPod touches. But interestingly, 30 percent of Pinger users are on smartphones, according to Pinger co-founder Joe Sipher.</p>
<p>The market for services that replace the traditional ones provided by the carrier is growing, with apps like <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111212/upstart-whatsapp-among-list-of-most-popular-data-using-iphone-apps/">WhatsApp</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111205/ever-heard-of-the-app-touch-nobody-has-but-12m-people-already-use-it/">Touch</a> quietly becoming some of the most popular downloads in the market.</p>
<p>Voicemail itself has been seen as a potential beachhead for so-called &#8220;over-the-top&#8221; services. French carrier Orange <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110227/frances-orange-hopes-to-put-the-squeeze-on-rivals-with-an-iphone-voice-mail-app/">released an iOS app</a> that replaces the iPhone&#8217;s built-in voicemail app with one that allows users to record separate messages depending on who is calling.</p>

<p>Google&#8217;s translation app for Android can now converse in far more languages.</p>
<p>The company, which has long offered text translations and speech-to-text translation, in January added an experimental feature <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110112/android-phones-se-habla-espanol/">allowing speech-to-speech translation between English and Spanish</a>.</p>

<p>With Thursday&#8217;s update, the app now can translate among 14 spoken languages. Along with English and Spanish, the app now translates between Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Polish, Russian and Turkish.</p>
<p>&#8220;Mobile technology and the web have made it easier for people around the world to access information and communicate with each other,&#8221; product manager Jeff Chin said in a blog posting. &#8220;But there’s still a daunting obstacle: the language barrier. We’re trying to knock down that barrier so everyone can communicate and connect more easily.&#8221;</p>
<p>Chin noted that the technology remains an early alpha version, with accents and background noise still a factor in accuracy.</p>
<p>&#8220;But since it depends on examples to learn, the quality will improve as people use it more,&#8221; Chin said. &#8220;We wanted to get this early version out to help start the conversation no matter where you are in the world.&#8221;</p>
<p>Google has also added in a feature that lets you hear what it thinks you said before it translates. That can be especially useful if what one wants to ask is &#8220;How much for the knife?&#8221; and Google hears &#8220;How much for your wife?&#8221;</p>
<p>The update comes in handy as <strong>AllThingsD</strong> heads to <strong>AsiaD</strong>, with the mobile team (a.k.a. me) headed to Taiwan and Korea in addition to Hong Kong. We&#8217;ll try to do a hands-on test in at least one of the supported languages on the trip.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, the number of languages supported for text and text-to-speech translations continues to grow, with 63 languages supported for text, speech-to-text in 17 languages and text-to-speech working in 24 languages.</p>

<p>In her second major speech focused on women in the workplace, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg told the graduates at <a href="http://www.barnard.edu/headlines/facebook-executive-barnard-graduates-world-needs-you-run-it">Barnard College&#8217;s 119th commencement ceremony</a> in New York yesterday not to &#8220;leave before you leave.&#8221;</p>
<p>Her message&#8211;a version of which she also delivered last year to an audience at the TedWomen conference in Washington, D.C., in a speech titled &#8220;Why We Have So Few Women Leaders&#8221;&#8211;should be paid attention to in Silicon Valley, where Sandberg is <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101221/the-men-and-no-women-of-web-2-0-boards-boomtowns-talking-to-you-twitter-facebook-zynga-groupon-and-foursquare/">one of the few</a> high-ranking and high-profile women execs.  </p>
<p>Sandberg, a former Google exec before taking the No. 2 spot at the social networking giant, aimed more at women than at men yesterday, urging the students she addressed not to quit too early due to a vexing variety of personal choices.</p>
<p>Said Sandberg:</p>
<p>&#8220;So my heartfelt message is: Don&#8217;t leave before you leave. Don&#8217;t lean back, lean in. Keep your foot on the gas pedal until the day you have to make a decision. That&#8217;s the only way to ensure you even have a decision to make.&#8221;</p>
<p>And:</p>
<p>&#8220;Women shortchange their own contributions from the very start, and this underestimation is expensive for both you and others. Because when you underestimate yourself, you lessen the impact you can have.&#8221;</p>

<p>Recently, BoomTown took a walk down digital Memory Lane with Bob Lisbonne, CEO of Pixazza, the photo-tagging service that has nicknamed itself &#8220;AdSense for images.&#8221;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s because Lisbonne used to be a big wheel at Netscape Communications, the iconic Internet browser company that truly changed the digital world&#8211;before crashing and burning in a very public way.</p>
<p>We talked about the old days, of course, but more about the new days and his business focused on putting all kinds of advertising within online images.</p>
<p>The Mountain View, CA, start-up&#8211;which is backed by Google Ventures, CMEA Ventures, August Capital, Foundation Capital and Shasta Ventures, as well as by angel investors Ron Conway, Gideon Yu and Maynard Webb&#8211; aims to do for Web photos what the search giant did for text.</p>
<p>At least that&#8217;s the hope.</p>
<p>Pixazza is selling itself as a win-win for online publishers&#8211;who certainly could use one.</p>
<p>Essentially, the company lets publishers match and link images of products or places with its network of advertisers, via a single line of code.</p>
<p>When users on that site mouse over the photos, they get rich information about pricing and more, as well as a clickable way to purchase the items.</p>
<p>Quite possibly annoying, but Pixazza is growing quickly anyway, with the company claiming 20 billion image views per year and reaching 70 million unique visitors a month on sites deploying its technology.</p>
<p>There are rivals in the space, of course, such as GumGum and Vibrant, but Pixazza does come armed with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100719/photo-ad-network-pixazza-rounds-up-another-12-million">$18 million in venture funding</a>, as well as that relationship with Google.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s Lisbonne talking about it all in a video interview I did at Pixazza&#8217;s Silicon Valley HQ:</p>

<p>Last week, OverDrive Inc. released OverDrive Media Console for the iPad, a free app from Apple&#8217;s App Store. With the app, you can now borrow eBooks for reading on the go with a tablet.</p>

<p>You can already borrow an eBook from a library using an eReader, including the Sony Reader and Barnes &amp; Noble Nook, but you&#8217;ll need a PC and a USB cable for downloading and synching. Amazon&#8217;s Kindle doesn&#8217;t allow borrowing eBooks from libraries.</p>
<p>For the past week, I borrowed and wirelessly downloaded digital books onto tablets primarily using OverDrive, the largest distributor of eBooks for libraries. I tested the OverDrive Media Console for the iPad. I also used the Dell Streak 7 tablet to test the app on the Android operating system; this app also works on Android smartphones. An iPhone app is available. </p>
<p>Before you go hunting for your library card, there are a few factors to consider. While there are positives to borrowing eBooks from a library, the process has significant limitations that can be frustrating.</p>
<p>The biggest upside, of course: They&#8217;re free. In comparison, digital bookstore apps like Amazon&#8217;s Kindle, Apple&#8217;s iBooks and the Barnes &amp; Noble Nook app charge around $10 a book. Local libraries pay for licenses to each eBook just like they pay for each physical book. Lending periods vary among libraries, from seven to 21 days, and some libraries let patrons set due dates. Fines or late fees are nonexistent because digital access to the books expires on a set due date, at which point titles lock up and users are prompted to delete the titles.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s a major downside to borrowing digital books. If the book you want is checked out, you still have to wait until someone returns it to borrow it. OverDrive&#8217;s licenses allow one book copy per person, so several people can&#8217;t simultaneously borrow the same eBook. Libraries can buy several licenses for a title so they can have multiple copies of popular books for borrowing. I found seven eBook copies of &#8220;The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo&#8221; in my Washington, D.C., public library system.</p>

<p>But the OverDrive interface showed me that most of the books I wanted to read were checked out, and in several cases, there were other patrons on a waiting list for the copies. While &#8220;The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo&#8221; had seven copies, it also had seven patrons waiting for copies of the book. The idea of waiting for a book with many people lined up to borrow it is enough to inspire even some of the most frugal readers to cough up the dough to buy digital books. Just like with &#8220;real&#8221; library books, checked-out eBooks shouldn&#8217;t impact sales of eBooks.</p>
<p>An OverDrive spokesman says, &#8220;Libraries set the number of titles that can be checked out by each cardholder at any one time. That number varies from library to library, and the average is about five titles across our network.&#8221;</p>
<p>Book selection is also a challenge. According to fiscal records, my library&#8217;s physical book collection numbers well over two million books, while its OverDrive titles total about 11,000 eBooks. And only a portion of those were in the EPUB format, which is the only format that works with the Android, iPhone and the iPad apps. That meant the selection for me is pretty small. Smaller libraries have even fewer eBooks from which to choose. Users can&#8217;t borrow digital content from libraries where they don&#8217;t have library cards.</p>
<p>Many of my book searches showed the that my library didn&#8217;t have a digital copy of the incredibly popular &#8220;Team of Rivals&#8221; by Doris Kearns Goodwin, or even anything by the popular mystery novelist, Mary Higgins Clark. I tried entering broader terms into the OverDrive search box and didn&#8217;t have much luck then either: The term &#8220;London&#8221; only returned two results.</p>
<p>According to a spokesman, the D.C. library system has more than 25,000 eBook titles, including the OverDrive offerings, and &#8220;will be adding new titles in EPUB format weekly as new titles are released and to meet demand.&#8221;</p>
<p>Part of the selection problem, of course, is that many libraries are new to the eBook borrowing experience and are in the midst of building up digital collections. </p>
<p>Since availability is a problem, it would make sense that users could view books by seeing just those books that are available for borrowing. But OverDrive lacks this feature, so users are stuck searching for—or scrolling through—titles over and over again only to find that they&#8217;re already checked out by other people. After a dozen searches like this, I was ready to give up. </p>
<p>The OverDrive spokesman said a feature that sorts books to display only those available will be out sometime this year. He noted that several libraries are increasing their eBook catalogs to adjust to increasing demand from tablet users.</p>
<p>But the process for selecting and downloading books is clumsy. After choosing the correct local library, the OverDrive app sends the user out into the tablet&#8217;s Web browser to find books in the library&#8217;s system. OverDrive&#8217;s spokesman said this preserves library branding but that, in the future, this selection process will be in the app.</p>
<p>To download and read the EPUB formatted book, you must sign in with an Adobe ID. This is in addition to entering your library card number. I had one of these IDs from past use of Adobe products, but many people won&#8217;t and will groan over this extra registration step. </p>
<p>Actually checking out a book, takes very little time. After all, these files contain only text, not large video or audio files. Since I had trouble finding books to download, I settled on a romance novel featured on OverDrive&#8217;s homepage titled &#8220;Hawk&#8217;s Way: Rebels&#8221; by Joan Johnston. It took less than 30 seconds to download to my iPad. </p>
<p>Once downloaded, books looked fine on the iPad and Dell Streak. The screen&#8217;s brightness can be adjusted using an on-screen slider and a handy navigation strip at the bottom of each page shows where you are in a book and how many pages remain in the currently opened chapter. Publishers can set the number of font sizes to which text can be adjusted. And with the app, text can&#8217;t be displayed like pages in a real book (with two columns of text on two pages opened in front of you) when the tablet is held horizontally. </p>
<p>OverDrive doesn&#8217;t enable synchronizing of material across multiple devices, like Amazon&#8217;s Kindle app does with Whispersync. So if I download a book on my iPad in the OverDrive app, I can&#8217;t open that book on an Android phone or desktop using OverDrive. </p>
<p>OverDrive serves more than 13,000 libraries with a catalog of 400,000 titles from 1,000 publishers, but it&#8217;s possible your library may not use this system (check OverDrive.com for participating libraries). The spokesman said the company plans an app for the BlackBerry by June and hopes to enable wireless downloads on other devices in the future.</p>

<p>Yesterday, in a major policy speech in Washington, D.C., Secretary of State Hillary Clinton jumped on the Internet bandwagon again, unveiling a $25 million government investment for entrepreneurs to allow dissidents to thwart &#8220;thugs, hackers and censors.&#8221;</p>
<p>Since that&#8217;s about the amount a third-string social photo-sharing site gets while walking down University Avenue in Palo Alto, Calif., from venture capitalists with bags of money to spend, let me just say the money is, well, underwhelming.</p>
<p>Luckily, Clinton&#8217;s speech&#8211;the latest chapter of the Obama administration&#8217;s &#8220;Internet Freedom Agenda&#8221;&#8211;was much better.</p>
<p>In fact, it was a sobering look at the situation, replete with all its conflicts and compromises, including some related to the State Department of late (<em>hello, WikiLeaks!</em>).</p>
<p>While more of a gimmick, Clinton outlined what she called a &#8220;venture capital-style approach&#8221; to stopping governments from closing down digital communications platforms.</p>
<p>In Egypt, that has included the whole dang Internet after times got tough and protesters tweeted too much.</p>
<p>Even still, said Clinton, such efforts&#8211;however effective now&#8211;were ultimately useless.</p>
<p>&#8220;Those who clamp down on Internet freedom may be able to hold back the full expression of their people’s yearnings for a while, but not forever,&#8221; she said.</p>
<p>Still, even though Facebook and Twitter have been lauded as critical tools in the reform protests in the Mideast, those Luddite strongmen did manage to put up a very good fight in shutting them down.</p>
<p>But Clinton advocated pressing on. Along with the seed funding for firewall-piercing and evading technologies, she also announced the creation of a new coordinator for cyber issues and the fact that the State Department had just begun to tweet in Arabic and Farsi and would soon be doing so in Chinese, Hindi and Russian.</p>
<p>All very nice steps, but the overall arrival of the long-promised global &#8220;strategy for cyberspace,&#8221; which has gotten bogged down in politics, is still to come.</p>
<p>In fact, a GOP-fueled criticism of the State Department was also released yesterday, designed to muck up Clinton&#8217;s speech, about how another $30 million in digital investments was being spent or, more precisely, being spent badly.</p>
<p>Clinton answered critics:</p>
<p>&#8220;Some have criticized us for not pouring funding into a single technology&#8211;but there is no silver bullet in the struggle against Internet repression. There&#8217;s no &#8216;app&#8217; for that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, actually, since there is an app that turns your Apple iPhone into a hand massager, there certainly <em>should</em> be.</p>
<p>Speaking of that, Clinton was deft at dealing with the obvious delta between pressing for Internet freedom, even as U.S. government lawyers were whacking away at WikiLeaks&#8211;and, by association, Twitter itself.</p>
<p>Clinton noted the release of a mass of classified State Department documents &#8220;began with an act of theft,&#8221; arguing that this was the real issue.</p>
<p>She went on to further argue:</p>
<p>&#8220;I said that the WikiLeaks incident began with a theft, just as if it had been executed by smuggling papers in a briefcase. The fact that WikiLeaks used the Internet is not the reason we criticized its actions. WikiLeaks does not challenge our commitment to Internet freedom.&#8221;</p>
<p>Actually, the issue is that the Internet, once it really gets going, doesn&#8217;t really want to be controlled by anyone.</p>
<p>Kind of like humanity.</p>
<p>Or as Clinton so correctly noted about the various protests taking place abroad:</p>
<p>&#8220;In each case, people protested because of deep frustrations with the political and economic conditions of their lives. They stood and marched and chanted and the authorities tracked and blocked and arrested them. The Internet did not do any of those things; people did.&#8221;</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>Thank you all very much and good afternoon. It is a pleasure, once again, to be back on the campus of the George Washington University, a place that I have spent quite a bit of time in all different settings over the last now nearly 20 years. I&#8217;d like especially to thank President Knapp and Provost Lerman, because this is a great opportunity for me to address such a significant issue, and one which deserves the attention of citizens, governments, and I know is drawing that attention. And perhaps today in my remarks, we can begin a much more vigorous debate that will respond to the needs that we have been watching in real time on our television sets.</p>
<p>A few minutes after midnight on January 28th, the Internet went dark across Egypt. During the previous four days, hundreds of thousands of Egyptians had marched to demand a new government. And the world, on TVs, laptops, cell phones, and smart phones, had followed every single step. Pictures and videos from Egypt flooded the web. On Facebook and Twitter, journalists posted on-the-spot reports. Protestors coordinated their next moves. And citizens of all stripes shared their hopes and fears about this pivotal moment in the history of their country.</p>
<p>Millions worldwide answered in real time, &#8220;You are not alone and we are with you.&#8221; Then the government pulled the plug. Cell phone service was cut off, TV satellite signals were jammed, and Internet access was blocked for nearly the entire population. The government did not want the people to communicate with each other and it did not want the press to communicate with the public. It certainly did not want the world to watch.</p>
<p>The events in Egypt recalled another protest movement 18 months earlier in Iran, when thousands marched after disputed elections. Their protestors also used websites to organize. A video taken by cell phone showed a young woman named Neda killed by a member of the paramilitary forces, and within hours, that video was being watched by people everywhere.</p>
<p>The Iranian authorities used technology as well. The Revolutionary Guard stalked members of the Green Movement by tracking their online profiles. And like Egypt, for a time, the government shut down the internet and mobile networks altogether. After the authorities raided homes, attacked university dorms, made mass arrests, tortured and fired shots into crowds, the protests ended.</p>
<p>In Egypt, however, the story ended differently. The protests continued despite the internet shutdown. People organized marches through flyers and word of mouth and used dial-up modems and fax machines to communicate with the world. After five days, the government relented and Egypt came back online. The authorities then sought to use the Internet to control the protests by ordering mobile companies to send out pro-government text messages, and by arresting bloggers and those who organized the protests online. But 18 days after the protests began, the government failed and the president resigned.</p>
<p>What happened in Egypt and what happened in Iran, which this week is once again using violence against protestors seeking basic freedoms, was about a great deal more than the internet. In each case, people protested because of deep frustrations with the political and economic conditions of their lives. They stood and marched and chanted and the authorities tracked and blocked and arrested them. The Internet did not do any of those things; people did. In both of these countries, the ways that citizens and the authorities used the Internet reflected the power of connection technologies on the one hand as an accelerant of political, social, and economic change, and on the other hand as a means to stifle or extinguish that change.</p>
<p>There is a debate currently underway in some circles about whether the Internet is a force for liberation or repression. But I think that debate is largely beside the point. Egypt isn&#8217;t inspiring people because they communicated using Twitter. It is inspiring because people came together and persisted in demanding a better future. Iran isn&#8217;t awful because the authorities used Facebook to shadow and capture members of the opposition. Iran is awful because it is a government that routinely violates the rights of its people.</p>
<p>So it is our values that cause these actions to inspire or outrage us, our sense of human dignity, the rights that flow from it, and the principles that ground it. And it is these values that ought to drive us to think about the road ahead. Two billion people are now online, nearly a third of humankind. We hail from every corner of the world, live under every form of government, and subscribe to every system of beliefs. And increasingly, we are turning to the Internet to conduct important aspects of our lives.</p>
<p>The Internet has become the public space of the 21st century&#8211;the world&#8217;s town square, classroom, marketplace, coffeehouse, and nightclub. We all shape and are shaped by what happens there, all 2 billion of us and counting. And that presents a challenge. To maintain an Internet that delivers the greatest possible benefits to the world, we need to have a serious conversation about the principles that will guide us, what rules exist and should not exist and why, what behaviors should be encouraged or discouraged and how.</p>
<p>The goal is not to tell people how to use the Internet any more than we ought to tell people how to use any public square, whether it&#8217;s Tahrir Square or Times Square. The value of these spaces derives from the variety of activities people can pursue in them, from holding a rally to selling their vegetables, to having a private conversation. These spaces provide an open platform, and so does the Internet. It does not serve any particular agenda, and it never should. But if people around the world are going come together every day online and have a safe and productive experience, we need a shared vision to guide us.</p>
<p>One year ago, I offered a starting point for that vision by calling for a global commitment to Internet freedom, to protect human rights online as we do offline. The rights of individuals to express their views freely, petition their leaders, worship according to their beliefs&#8211;these rights are universal, whether they are exercised in a public square or on an individual blog. The freedoms to assemble and associate also apply in cyberspace. In our time, people are as likely to come together to pursue common interests online as in a church or a labor hall.</p>
<p>Together, the freedoms of expression, assembly, and association online comprise what I&#8217;ve called the freedom to connect. The United States supports this freedom for people everywhere, and we have called on other nations to do the same. Because we want people to have the chance to exercise this freedom. We also support expanding the number of people who have access to the Internet. And because the Internet must work evenly and reliably for it to have value, we support the multi-stakeholder system that governs the internet today, which has consistently kept it up and running through all manner of interruptions across networks, borders, and regions.</p>
<p>In the year since my speech, people worldwide have continued to use the Internet to solve shared problems and expose public corruption, from the people in Russia who tracked wildfires online and organized a volunteer firefighting squad, to the children in Syria who used Facebook to reveal abuse by their teachers, to the Internet campaign in China that helps parents find their missing children.</p>
<p>At the same time, the Internet continues to be restrained in a myriad of ways. In China, the government censors content and redirects search requests to error pages. In Burma, independent news sites have been taken down with distributed denial of service attacks. In Cuba, the government is trying to create a national intranet, while not allowing their citizens to access the global internet. In Vietnam, bloggers who criticize the government are arrested and abused. In Iran, the authorities block opposition and media websites, target social media, and steal identifying information about their own people in order to hunt them down.</p>
<p>These actions reflect a landscape that is complex and combustible, and sure to become more so in the coming years as billions of more people connect to the Internet. The choices we make today will determine what the Internet looks like in the future. Businesses have to choose whether and how to enter markets where internet freedom is limited. People have to choose how to act online, what information to share and with whom, which ideas to voice and how to voice them. Governments have to choose to live up to their commitments to protect free expression, assembly, and association.</p>
<p>For the United States, the choice is clear. On the spectrum of Internet freedom, we place ourselves on the side of openness. Now, we recognize that an open Internet comes with challenges. It calls for ground rules to protect against wrongdoing and harm. And Internet freedom raises tensions, like all freedoms do. But we believe the benefits far exceed the costs.</p>
<p>And today, I&#8217;d like to discuss several of the challenges we must confront as we seek to protect and defend a free and open Internet. Now, I&#8217;m the first to say that neither I nor the United States Government has all the answers. We&#8217;re not sure we have all the questions. But we are committed to asking the questions, to helping lead a conversation, and to defending not just universal principles but the interests of our people and our partners.</p>
<p>The first challenge is achieving both liberty and security. Liberty and security are often presented as equal and opposite; the more you have of one, the less you have of the other. In fact, I believe they make it each other possible. Without security, liberty is fragile. Without liberty, security is oppressive. The challenge is finding the proper measure: enough security to enable our freedoms, but not so much or so little as to endanger them.</p>
<p>Finding this proper measure for the Internet is critical because the qualities that make the internet a force for unprecedented progress&#8211;its openness, its leveling effect, its reach and speed&#8211;also enable wrongdoing on an unprecedented scale. Terrorists and extremist groups use the Internet to recruit members, and plot and carry out attacks. Human traffickers use the Internet to find and lure new victims into modern-day slavery. Child pornographers use the Internet to exploit children. Hackers break into financial institutions, cell phone networks, and personal email accounts.</p>
<p>So we need successful strategies for combating these threats and more without constricting the openness that is the Internet&#8217;s greatest attribute. The United States is aggressively tracking and deterring criminals and terrorists online. We are investing in our nation&#8217;s cyber-security, both to prevent cyber-incidents and to lessen their impact. We are cooperating with other countries to fight transnational crime in cyberspace. The United States Government invests in helping other nations build their own law enforcement capacity. We have also ratified the Budapest Cybercrime Convention, which sets out the steps countries must take to ensure that the internet is not misused by criminals and terrorists while still protecting the liberties of our own citizens.</p>
<p>In our vigorous effort to prevent attacks or apprehend criminals, we retain a commitment to human rights and fundamental freedoms. The United States is determined to stop terrorism and criminal activity online and offline, and in both spheres we are committed to pursuing these goals in accordance with our laws and values.</p>
<p>Now, others have taken a different approach. Security is often invoked as a justification for harsh crackdowns on freedom. Now, this tactic is not new to the digital age, but it has new resonance as the internet has given governments new capacities for tracking and punishing human rights advocates and political dissidents. Governments that arrest bloggers, pry into the peaceful activities of their citizens, and limit their access to the Internet may claim to be seeking security. In fact, they may even mean it as they define it. But they are taking the wrong path. Those who clamp down on Internet freedom may be able to hold back the full expression of their people’s yearnings for a while, but not forever.</p>
<p>The second challenge is protecting both transparency and confidentiality. The Internet&#8217;s strong culture of transparency derives from its power to make information of all kinds available instantly. But in addition to being a public space, the Internet is also a channel for private communications. And for that to continue, there must be protection for confidential communication online. Think of all the ways in which people and organizations rely on confidential communications to do their jobs. Businesses hold confidential conversations when they&#8217;re developing new products to stay ahead of their competitors. Journalists keep the details of some sources confidential to protect them from exposure or retribution. And governments also rely on confidential communication online as well as offline. The existence of connection technologies may make it harder to maintain confidentiality, but it does not alter the need for it.</p>
<p>Now, I know that government confidentiality has been a topic of debate during the past few months because of WikiLeaks, but it&#8217;s been a false debate in many ways. Fundamentally, the WikiLeaks incident began with an act of theft. Government documents were stolen, just the same as if they had been smuggled out in a briefcase. Some have suggested that this theft was justified because governments have a responsibility to conduct all of our work out in the open in the full view of our citizens. I respectfully disagree. The United States could neither provide for our citizens&#8217; security nor promote the cause of human rights and democracy around the world if we had to make public every step of our efforts. Confidential communication gives our government the opportunity to do work that could not be done otherwise.</p>
<p>Consider our work with former Soviet states to secure loose nuclear material. By keeping the details confidential, we make it less likely that terrorists or criminals will find the nuclear material and steal it for their own purposes. Or consider the content of the documents that WikiLeaks made public. Without commenting on the authenticity of any particular documents, we can observe that many of the cables released by WikiLeaks relate to human rights work carried on around the world. Our diplomats closely collaborate with activists, journalists, and citizens to challenge the misdeeds of oppressive governments. It is dangerous work. By publishing diplomatic cables, WikiLeaks exposed people to even greater risk.</p>
<p>For operations like these, confidentiality is essential, especially in the Internet age when dangerous information can be sent around the world with the click of a keystroke. But of course, governments also have a duty to be transparent. We govern with the consent of the people, and that consent must be informed to be meaningful. So we must be judicious about when we close off our work to the public, and we must review our standards frequently to make sure they are rigorous. In the United States, we have laws designed to ensure that the government makes its work open to the people, and the Obama Administration has also launched an unprecedented initiative to put government data online, to encourage citizen participation, and to generally increase the openness of government.</p>
<p>The U.S. Government&#8217;s ability to protect America, to secure the liberties of our people, and to support the rights and freedoms of others around the world depends on maintaining a balance between what’s public and what should and must remain out of the public domain. The scale should and will always be tipped in favor of openness, but tipping the scale over completely serves no one&#8217;s interests. Let me be clear. I said that the WikiLeaks incident began with a theft, just as if it had been executed by smuggling papers in a briefcase. The fact that WikiLeaks used the Internet is not the reason we criticized its actions. WikiLeaks does not challenge our commitment to Internet freedom.</p>
<p>And one final word on this matter: There were reports in the days following these leaks that the United States Government intervened to coerce private companies to deny service to WikiLeaks. That is not the case. Now, some politicians and pundits publicly called for companies to disassociate from WikiLeaks, while others criticized them for doing so. Public officials are part of our country&#8217;s public debates, but there is a line between expressing views and coercing conduct. Business decisions that private companies may have taken to enforce their own values or policies regarding WikiLeaks were not at the direction of the Obama Administration.</p>
<p>A third challenge is protecting free expression while fostering tolerance and civility. I don’t need to tell this audience that the Internet is home to every kind of speech&#8211;false, offensive, incendiary, innovative, truthful, and beautiful.</p>
<p>The multitude of opinions and ideas that crowd the Internet is both a result of its openness and a reflection of our human diversity. Online, everyone has a voice. And the Universal Declaration of Human Rights protects the freedom of expression for all. But what we say has consequences. Hateful or defamatory words can inflame hostilities, deepen divisions, and provoke violence. On the Internet, this power is heightened. Intolerant speech is often amplified and impossible to retract. Of course, the Internet also provides a unique space for people to bridge their differences and build trust and understanding.</p>
<p>Some take the view that, to encourage tolerance, some hateful ideas must be silenced by governments. We believe that efforts to curb the content of speech rarely succeed and often become an excuse to violate freedom of expression. Instead, as it has historically been proven time and time again, the better answer to offensive speech is more speech. People can and should speak out against intolerance and hatred. By exposing ideas to debate, those with merit tend to be strengthened, while weak and false ideas tend to fade away; perhaps not instantly, but eventually.</p>
<p>Now, this approach does not immediately discredit every hateful idea or convince every bigot to reverse his thinking. But we have determined as a society that it is far more effective than any other alternative approach. Deleting writing, blocking content, arresting speakers&#8211;these actions suppress words, but they do not touch the underlying ideas. They simply drive people with those ideas to the fringes, where their convictions can deepen, unchallenged.</p>
<p>Last summer, Hannah Rosenthal, the U.S. Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism, made a trip to Dachau and Auschwitz with a delegation of American imams and Muslim leaders. Many of them had previously denied the Holocaust, and none of them had ever denounced Holocaust denial. But by visiting the concentration camps, they displayed a willingness to consider a different view. And the trip had a real impact. They prayed together, and they signed messages of peace, and many of those messages in the visitors books were written in Arabic. At the end of the trip, they read a statement that they wrote and signed together condemning without reservation Holocaust denial and all other forms of anti-Semitism.</p>
<p>The marketplace of ideas worked. Now, these leaders had not been arrested for their previous stance or ordered to remain silent. Their mosques were not shut down. The state did not compel them with force. Others appealed to them with facts. And their speech was dealt with through the speech of others.</p>
<p>The United States does restrict certain kinds of speech in accordance with the rule of law and our international obligations. We have rules about libel and slander, defamation, and speech that incites imminent violence. But we enforce these rules transparently, and citizens have the right to appeal how they are applied. And we don&#8217;t restrict speech even if the majority of people find it offensive. History, after all, is full of examples of ideas that were banned for reasons that we now see as wrong. People were punished for denying the divine right of kings, or suggesting that people should be treated equally regardless of race, gender, or religion. These restrictions might have reflected the dominant view at the time, and variations on these restrictions are still in force in places around the world.</p>
<p>But when it comes to online speech, the United States has chosen not to depart from our time-tested principles. We urge our people to speak with civility, to recognize the power and reach that their words can have online. We&#8217;ve seen in our own country tragic examples of how online bullying can have terrible consequences. Those of us in government should lead by example, in the tone we set and the ideas we champion. But leadership also means empowering people to make their own choices, rather than intervening and taking those choices away. We protect free speech with the force of law, and we appeal to the force of reason to win out over hate.</p>
<p>Now, these three large principles are not always easy to advance at once. They raise tensions, and they pose challenges. But we do not have to choose among them. Liberty and security, transparency and confidentiality, freedom of expression and tolerance&#8211;these all make up the foundation of a free, open, and secure society as well as a free, open, and secure internet where universal human rights are respected, and which provides a space for greater progress and prosperity over the long run.</p>
<p>Now, some countries are trying a different approach, abridging rights online and working to erect permanent walls between different activities&#8211;economic exchanges, political discussions, religious expressions, and social interactions. They want to keep what they like and suppress what they don&#8217;t. But this is no easy task. Search engines connect businesses to new customers, and they also attract users because they deliver and organize news and information. Social networking sites aren&#8217;t only places where friends share photos; they also share political views and build support for social causes or reach out to professional contacts to collaborate on new business opportunities.</p>
<p>Walls that divide the Internet, that block political content, or ban broad categories of expression, or allow certain forms of peaceful assembly but prohibit others, or intimidate people from expressing their ideas are far easier to erect than to maintain. Not just because people using human ingenuity find ways around them and through them but because there isn&#8217;t an economic Internet and a social Internet and a political Internet; there&#8217;s just the Internet. And maintaining barriers that attempt to change this reality entails a variety of costs&#8211;moral, political, and economic. Countries may be able to absorb these costs for a time, but we believe they are unsustainable in the long run. There are opportunity costs for trying to be open for business but closed for free expression&#8211;costs to a nation&#8217;s education system, its political stability, its social mobility, and its economic potential.</p>
<p>When countries curtail Internet freedom, they place limits on their economic future. Their young people don&#8217;t have full access to the conversations and debates happening in the world or exposure to the kind of free inquiry that spurs people to question old ways of doing and invent new ones. And barring criticism of officials makes governments more susceptible to corruption, which create economic distortions with long-term effects. Freedom of thought and the level playing field made possible by the rule of law are part of what fuels innovation economies.</p>
<p>So it;s not surprising that the European-American Business Council, a group of more than 70 companies, made a strong public support statement last week for Internet freedom. If you invest in countries with aggressive censorship and surveillance policies, your website could be shut down without warning, your servers hacked by the government, your designs stolen, or your staff threatened with arrest or expulsion for failing to comply with a politically motivated order. The risks to your bottom line and to your integrity will at some point outweigh the potential rewards, especially if there are market opportunities elsewhere.</p>
<p>Now, some have pointed to a few countries, particularly China, that appears to stand out as an exception, a place where Internet censorship is high and economic growth is strong. Clearly, many businesses are willing to endure restrictive internet policies to gain access to those markets, and in the short term, even perhaps in the medium term, those governments may succeed in maintaining a segmented internet. But those restrictions will have long-term costs that threaten one day to become a noose that restrains growth and development.</p>
<p>There are political costs as well. Consider Tunisia, where online economic activity was an important part of the country&#8217;s ties with Europe while online censorship was on par with China and Iran, the effort to divide the economic internet from the &#8220;everything else&#8221; Internet in Tunisia could not be sustained. People, especially young people, found ways to use connection technologies to organize and share grievances, which, as we know, helped fuel a movement that led to revolutionary change. In Syria, too, the government is trying to negotiate a non-negotiable contradiction. Just last week, it lifted a ban on Facebook and YouTube for the first time in three years, and yesterday they convicted a teenage girl of espionage and sentenced her to five years in prison for the political opinions she expressed on her blog.</p>
<p>This, too, is unsustainable. The demand for access to platforms of expression cannot be satisfied when using them lands you in prison. We believe that governments who have erected barriers to Internet freedom, whether they&#8217;re technical filters or censorship regimes or attacks on those who exercise their rights to expression and assembly online, will eventually find themselves boxed in. They will face a dictator&#8217;s dilemma and will have to choose between letting the walls fall or paying the price to keep them standing, which means both doubling down on a losing hand by resorting to greater oppression and enduring the escalating opportunity cost of missing out on the ideas that have been blocked and people who have been disappeared.</p>
<p>I urge countries everywhere instead to join us in the bet we have made, a bet that an open internet will lead to stronger, more prosperous countries. At its core, it&#8217;s an extension of the bet that the United States has been making for more than 200 years, that open societies give rise to the most lasting progress, that the rule of law is the firmest foundation for justice and peace, and that innovation thrives where ideas of all kinds are aired and explored. This is not a bet on computers or mobile phones. It&#8217;s a bet on people. We&#8217;re confident that together with those partners in government and people around the world who are making the same bet by hewing to universal rights that underpin open societies, we&#8217;ll preserve the internet as an open space for all. And that will pay long-term gains for our shared progress and prosperity. The United States will continue to promote an Internet where people&#8217;s rights are protected and that it is open to innovation, interoperable all over the world, secure enough to hold people&#8217;s trust, and reliable enough to support their work.</p>
<p>In the past year, we have welcomed the emergence of a global coalition of countries, businesses, civil society groups, and digital activists seeking to advance these goals. We have found strong partners in several governments worldwide, and we&#8217;ve been encouraged by the work of the Global Network Initiative, which brings together companies, academics, and NGOs to work together to solve the challenges we are facing, like how to handle government requests for censorship or how to decide whether to sell technologies that could be used to violate rights or how to handle privacy issues in the context of cloud computing. We need strong corporate partners that have made principled, meaningful commitments to internet freedom as we work together to advance this common cause.</p>
<p>We realize that in order to be meaningful, online freedoms must carry over into real-world activism. That&#8217;s why we are working through our Civil Society 2.0 initiative to connect NGOs and advocates with technology and training that will magnify their impact. We are also committed to continuing our conversation with people everywhere around the world. Last week, you may have heard, we launched Twitter feeds in Arabic and Farsi, adding to the ones we already have in French and Spanish. We&#8217;ll start similar ones in Chinese, Russian, and Hindi. This is enabling us to have real-time, two-way conversations with people wherever there is a connection that governments do not block.</p>
<p>Our commitment to internet freedom is a commitment to the rights of people, and we are matching that with our actions. Monitoring and responding to threats to internet freedom has become part of the daily work of our diplomats and development experts. They are working to advance internet freedom on the ground at our embassies and missions around the world. The United States continues to help people in oppressive internet environments get around filters, stay one step ahead of the censors, the hackers, and the thugs who beat them up or imprison them for what they say online.</p>
<p>While the rights we seek to protect and support are clear, the various ways that these rights are violated are increasingly complex. I know some have criticized us for not pouring funding into a single technology, but we believe there is no silver bullet in the struggle against internet repression. There’s no app for that. Start working, those of you out there. And accordingly, we are taking a comprehensive and innovative approach, one that matches our diplomacy with technology, secure distribution networks for tools, and direct support for those on the front lines.</p>
<p>In the last three years, we have awarded more than $20 million in competitive grants through an open process, including interagency evaluation by technical and policy experts to support a burgeoning group of technologists and activists working at the cutting edge of the fight against internet repression. This year, we will award more than $25 million in additional funding. We are taking a venture capital-style approach, supporting a portfolio of technologies, tools, and training, and adapting as more users shift to mobile devices. We have our ear to the ground, talking to digital activists about where they need help, and our diversified approach means we&#8217;re able to adapt the range of threats that they face. We support multiple tools, so if repressive governments figure out how to target one, others are available. And we invest in the cutting edge because we know that repressive governments are constantly innovating their methods of oppression and we intend to stay ahead of them.</p>
<p>Likewise, we are leading the push to strengthen cyber security and online innovation, building capacity in developing countries, championing open and interoperable standards and enhancing international cooperation to respond to cyber threats. Deputy Secretary of Defense Lynn gave a speech on this issue just yesterday. All these efforts build on a decade of work to sustain an Internet that is open, secure, and reliable. And in the coming year, the Administration will complete an international strategy for cyberspace, charting the course to continue this work into the future.</p>
<p>This is a foreign policy priority for us, one that will only increase in importance in the coming years. That’s why I&#8217;ve created the Office of the Coordinator for Cyber Issues, to enhance our work on cyber security and other issues and facilitate cooperation across the State Department and with other government agencies. I&#8217;ve named Christopher Painter, formerly senior director for cyber security at the National Security Council and a leader in the field for 20 years, to head this new office.</p>
<p>The dramatic increase in internet users during the past 10 years has been remarkable to witness. But that was just the opening act. In the next 20 years, nearly 5 billion people will join the network. It is those users who will decide the future.</p>
<p>So we are playing for the long game. Unlike much of what happens online, progress on this front will be measured in years, not seconds. The course we chart today will determine whether those who follow us will get the chance to experience the freedom, security, and prosperity of an open Internet.</p>
<p>As we look ahead, let us remember that Internet freedom isn&#8217;t about any one particular activity online. It&#8217;s about ensuring that the Internet remains a space where activities of all kinds can take place, from grand, ground-breaking, historic campaigns to the small, ordinary acts that people engage in every day.</p>
<p>We want to keep the Iternet open for the protestor using social media to organize a march in Egypt; the college student emailing her family photos of her semester abroad; the lawyer in Vietnam blogging to expose corruption; the teenager in the United States who is bullied and finds words of support online; for the small business owner in Kenya using mobile banking to manage her profits; the philosopher in China reading academic journals for her dissertation; the scientist in Brazil sharing data in real time with colleagues overseas; and the billions and billions of interactions with the Internet every single day as people communicate with loved ones, follow the news, do their jobs, and participate in the debates shaping their world.</p>
<p>Internet freedom is about defending the space in which all these things occur so that it remains not just for the students here today, but your successors and all who come after you. This is one of the grand challenges of our time. We are engaged in a vigorous effort against those who we have always stood against, who wish to stifle and repress, to come forward with their version of reality and to accept none other. We enlist your help on behalf of this struggle. It&#8217;s a struggle for human rights, it&#8217;s a struggle for human freedom, and it&#8217;s a struggle for human dignity.</p>

There&#8217;s yet another social enterprise play to keep track of. And like all the others, it&#8217;s being actively marketed as an alternative to Chatter.com, the social enterprise app from Salesforce.com.</p>
<p>BroadVision today announced <a href="http://www.broadvision.com/en/product_pr_clearvaleexpress.php">Clearvale Express</a>, which it describes as a free and streamlined version of Clearvale Enterprise, its cloud-based business collaboration platform. It was created in part at the suggestion of Softbank, the Japanese telecom concern that is a partner on the product and will resell it in Asian markets.</p>
<p>Above, that&#8217;s an ad for Clearvale Express evoking the old <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepsi_Challenge">&#8220;Pepsi challenge&#8221;</a> ads from the early 1980s. In this case, Chatter is being portrayed as &#8220;Coke,&#8221; the established player being challenged by the upstart, which is silly because Chatter is a relatively new player in an increasingly crowded social enterprise market, though Salesforce is clearly the biggest among the new entrants.</p>
<p>Bashing Salesforce is suddenly trendy. On Sunday, Yammer and Socialcast were spotted buying text ads on Google using the word &#8220;chatter&#8221; in hopes of catching the odd Google user responding to the pair of TV ads for Chatter.com <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110206/chatter-coms-super-bowl-tv-ads-touch-off-an-ad-skirmish-on-google/"> that aired during the Super Bowl</a>.</p>
<p>And that followed an attack video put out by Yammer highlighting how Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff loved Yammer at a 2008 TechCrunch event and accusing him of basically copying it. You can see that video below. Then there&#8217;s Jive, which used an <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110131/in-case-you-needed-reminding-social-enterprise-software-is-going-to-be-big/">industry survey</a> to try to make a case that it&#8217;s a worthier player in the space than Chatter or anyone else, for that matter.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m betting there&#8217;s more of this public pile-on ahead, though with luck it will be followed by a round of deal-making. Last year, Gartner estimated the 2011 market opportunity for all these apps at less than $800 million and said that it&#8217;s tracking at least 80 vendors, at least 50 of which are based in the cloud. That makes the social enterprise market seem like small potatoes at first until you see Gartner&#8217;s prediction that these apps will replace email&#8211;Microsoft Outlook and IBM Lotus Notes&#8211;as the primary tool for collaboration in businesses for 20 percent of companies within three years.</p>
<p>Combine that with a longer-term shift away from email&#8211;by teens, college-age people and younger people entering the workforce&#8211;and toward communication via Facebook and things like it, and you&#8217;ve got the makings of a fundamental shift in what&#8217;s considered normal as workplace technology. No wonder they&#8217;re taking swipes at each other. It is, however, already getting old .</p>

<p>As you may remember, Salesforce <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110127/salesforce-com-to-plug-chatter-com-now-free-for-all-companies-during-the-super-bowl/">bought &#8220;bookend&#8221; spots</a> that ran immediately before and after the halftime show, and included Will.i.am and the Black Eyed Peas, who were the main musical act of the show itself. Salesforce claimed that the bookend buy on either side of the halftime show was a first, and that it was the first time that an advertiser involved the halftime show entertainment act in a Super Bowl ad.</p>
<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/yamcastads-150x150.png" alt="" title="yamcastads" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2865" />While the general verdict on the ads themselves has yet to come down, there&#8217;s certainly been some grumbling from other social enterprise players, namely Yammer and Socialcast. Both have taken out text ads on Google against the word &#8220;chatter,&#8221; in some apparent hope of catching the eye of the millions who may have gone from seeing the ad on TV to googling the word &#8220;chatter&#8221; on their PCs. (I captured a screen-grab of their ads in the image at the right.) &#8220;Chatter Isn&#8217;t It&#8221; starts the ad for Yammer, while the one for Socialcast says &#8220;Superbowl Chattering?&#8221; Time will tell if they&#8217;re successful.</p>

Truly suit your needs? Because if it doesn&#8217;t, you&#8217;re potentially wasting hundreds of dollars.  According to a yearlong BillShrink survey of more than 230,000  wireless users, people waste an average of $336 annually by miscalculating their voice and data needs. And in doing so, they unnecessarily hand an estimated $79 million to their carriers.</p>
<p>A few key findings from<a href="http://www.billshrink.com/blog/10973/cell-phone-plans-comparison-2/"> the survey</a>:</p>
<ul>
<li> People estimate they need 711 wireless anytime minutes per month, but in truth they need quite a bit less. BillShrink found 651 minutes to be the average.</li>
<li> The average person uses 1,555 text messages per month, yet most consumers believe they use 2,566. (1,555 per-month is the <em>average</em>!?!)</li>
<li> People assume they need 54MB of data per month, yet most need 81MB. Ironically, most tiered carrier plans start at 150MB.</li>
</ul>
<p>What&#8217;s driving these disparities? Consumers&#8217; skewed perception of their wireless needs, obviously. But the carriers are to blame too. Their tiered pricing plans might offer more choice, but they also make it tougher to assess our voice, text and data needs, and make it quite a bit easier to overpay for them.<br />

This week, I took a look at Quora, a question-and-answer site that encourages thoughtful—even long-winded—discussions.</p>

<p>Quora (Quora.com) was launched about six months ago by two former Facebook employees who wanted to create a forum where in-depth questions could be posed and answered. Users vote answers up or down according to how good they are, the idea being that the best answers get pushed to the top of the queue by the community of users. Few of these questions can be answered with a simple yes or no. For example, one question asks, &#8220;What role did social media play with regards to the revolution in Tunisia?&#8221; (See here for the answer with the most votes: <a href="http://www.quora.com/Journalism/What-role-did-social-media-play-with-regards-to-the-revolution-in-Tunisia">http://3.ly/8Gqf</a>.) </p>
<p>One thing to be wary of: There&#8217;s nothing that qualifies the most popular answers as accurate, nor do people who write the most popular answers necessarily qualify as experts. This could lead to confusion or even danger, like medical questions that are answered incorrectly. Quora users are required to register their real email addresses, and some answers are more believable than others according to who answers, like the CEO of Netflix answering a question this past fall about how much the company spends on postage per year (answer: between $500 million and $600 million). </p>
<p>As soon I signed up for Quora by submitting an email and password, I walked through steps to &#8220;follow&#8221; certain topics that interest me—like technology, journalism, media and news—so whenever those topics are discussed, the related questions and answers appear on my Quora home page. I also linked my Twitter and Facebook accounts to my Quora account, which clued Quora in on some topics or people that might interest me according to the information in those accounts. Once these accounts are linked, it&#8217;s a lot easier to share Quora questions or answers with people on Twitter and Facebook. </p>
<p>People, like topics, can be followed. If someone I follow posts a question, answers a question or votes an answer up or down, this activity appears on my Quora home page. </p>
<p>Though Quora may sound simple, I found it uninviting, geeky and poorly explained. The site lacks instructions on how to use it;  people just have to figure it out as they go. For example, a newcomer might not know that Quora answers can be voted up or down by seeing two tiny triangles that appear beside each answer. If I select the up triangle, this indicates I voted for that answer, and news of this vote is shared on the Quora home page of anyone who follows me. A number beside each answer indicates how many votes it has received so far. But unless you&#8217;ve used the site for a while, you wouldn&#8217;t know any of this. </p>
<p>After a few weeks of use, I found I preferred using Quora less for asking my own questions and more for reading other people&#8217;s questions and answers about topics I liked. I occasionally voted on answers to show whether I supported them or not. One user asked me a direct question, which I answered. I asked a question of the Quora community, but no one replied. </p>
<p>I found Quora&#8217;s questions and answers to be rather smart and entertaining. Its Silicon Valley roots are evident in its numerous technology-related questions and answers. I typed &#8220;tennis&#8221; into a box at the top of the screen and one of the first questions that surfaced was &#8220;Is tennis popular in Silicon Valley?&#8221; Instead of that question, I selected &#8220;What is the history of tennis&#8217;s strange scoring system?&#8221; and read the answer with the most votes, which seemed right to the best of my knowledge. Interestingly enough, this answer also included a link to a related article on Wikipedia. </p>

<p>But compared with the rest of the Web, where images, videos, animations and sound entertain website visitors, Quora&#8217;s text-filled pages can come off feeling a bit like textbook reading assignments. This is because all but a handful of questions are answered with just text. Video isn&#8217;t enabled on the site, though founder Charlie Cheever told me that this might be possible in the future. </p>
<p>Another problem with Quora is that most people who use the Internet are conditioned to rely on search engines like Google, Bing or Wikipedia for queries, typing the right key words to get the intended results. And people are often searching for quick answers that take just a couple seconds to read. </p>
<p>Plenty of other question-and-answer forums exist, like Yahoo Answers, which has been around since 2005, ChaCha.com and Ask.com. Facebook introduced Facebook Questions to a small number of its users over the summer, but when asked, a company spokeswoman wouldn&#8217;t say whether or not this offering would be available to all users anytime soon, if at all. </p>
<p>Quora&#8217;s combination of social networking (following topics and people) and in-depth answers helps differentiate it from those services.</p>
<p>Private messages can be sent from one user to another through Quora, and new messages are indicated with a red number that appears over your personal &#8220;Inbox&#8221; at the top of the Quora site. Likewise, when new notifications appear on the home page, a red number is shown above Home at the top of the page. This home page can be viewed in one of three views: Your Feed, All Changes or Followed Questions; users can toggle between these views.</p>
<p>Only people who have created accounts can browse the Quora.com site, though links to content can be opened by anyone. This differs from Twitter.com, which can be visited and searched by anyone regardless of whether or not they have a Twitter account. Quora also lacks one central home page where everyone can go to see every Quora question and answer, or which answer received the most votes on the entire site. Mr. Cheever told me that the site deliberately tries to keep your world small so you can focus on the topics or people you follow. </p>
<p>Quora relies on its community members to police one another, like Wikipedia, and less than 100 users are also granted administrator privileges to do more serious operations like deleting answers that use hate speech or other offensive remarks, which aren&#8217;t permitted according to the site&#8217;s policies. Every edit made to an answer is logged in the Quora system for everyone to see. This helps users understand an entry&#8217;s history on Quora. </p>
<p>This site doesn&#8217;t put much emphasis on interaction with others, though you are notified whenever someone follows you and you may be prompted to suggest topics for someone who starts following you. Like Facebook and Twitter, a list of users who you might want to follow is suggested in Quora.</p>
<p>For now, Quora feels like a website designed for techie insiders without instructions for mainstream users. But its smart community, intriguing questions and way of showing users just the content they want to follow will keep people coming back to the site. With a lot of polishing, Quora could be a social network people use every day.</p>

<p>However, even with the masses descending upon Las Vegas this week, Cricket has decided to delay the Muve music service and the launch of its first Muve-compatible phone.<br />

Cricket had hoped to launch service in Las Vegas this week along with a number of other markets later this month.</p>
<p>Under its revised time frame, Cricket plans to launch the service in Las Vegas later this month, add nine more cities in February and roll it out to the rest of its markets this spring.</p>
<p>Although all the necessary licensing is in place, Cricket spokesman Greg Lund said that the company needed the extra time to ensure all of the software bugs were ironed out before it started asking customers to pay for the service.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s got to be just perfect,&#8221; Lund told Mobilized in an interview at CES in Las Vegas.</p>
