The nation’s largest book publishers are facing increasing pricing pressure on the digital front as the number of cheap, self-published digital titles gain popularity with readers seeking budget-minded entertainment.

Amazon.com Inc.’s top 50 digital best-seller list featured 15 books priced at $5 or less on Wednesday afternoon. Louisville businessman John Locke, for example, a part-time thriller writer whose signature series features a former CIA assassin, claimed seven of those titles, all priced at 99 cents.

“They’re training their customers away from brand name authors and are instead creating visibility for self-published titles,” one senior publishing executive who asked not to be identified, says of Amazon.

Remember when Internet video was going to be like TV and movies, only on a smaller screen? Video ad network DBG is trying it again, with some help from Hulu and Jack Bauer.

Remember when Internet video was going to be like TV and movies, only on a smaller screen? During the first tech boom, a lot of folks thought Web video would look like pint-size versions of “real” shows, with budgets and plots and stars you’ve heard of.

Fast-forward to today, and the most successful Web video* doesn’t look anything like TV. It looks like Web video, and it’s usually made for very little money, featuring people who don’t get work doing anything else. (See: YouTube’s Partner Program, an increasingly important part of Google’s video site.)

Which is why it’s interesting to see what DBG is up to. The video ad network is finishing up production on a new series that’s sort of back-to-the-future: A 10-part dramatic serial, featuring real actors, cameras and even a script.

It’s called “The Confession,” and it will star Kiefer Sutherland, last seen on “24,” and John Hurt, who has been seen in lots and lots of stuff.

I’m unclear about the plot, but I’m pretty sure that it will be some sort of thriller. If you were putting Kiefer Sutherland in a Web serial, it would pretty much have to be a thriller, right? In any case, you’ll be able to see it in March, most likely via an initial exclusive run on Hulu.

DBG won’t cough up the financial details, but the company does tell me that its actors and crew are being paid real money and aren’t donating their time or exchanging it for revenue/equity/good karma.

And for now, at least, DBG is on the hook for all of that: Unlike almost all Web video that gets made today, the show was made without a sponsor’s buy-in. But the company is confident it will land advertisers soon.

We’ll get a better sense of whether the bet was a good one over the next few months, as the company releases teaser trailers. For now, it’s giving us a clip of Sutherland talking. Still, interesting:

Kiefer Sutherland on The Confession from Peter Kafka on Vimeo.

*We’re talking about stuff created for the Web. People are also quite content to watch “real” TV shows and movies on the Web, via sites and services like YouTube, Hulu and Netflix. And at some point–not yet, but eventually–those distinctions are going to get much blurrier.

Like victims in the thriller, “Ten Little Indians,” the directors of Yahoo involved in its Microsoft takeover debacle are moving off its board.

Today, it’s billionaire businessman Ron Burkle (pictured here) doing the leaving, after serving since 2001, when he was brought onto the Internet giant’s board by former CEO Terry Semel.

So far under the tenure of CEO Carol Bartz, who came to Yahoo (YHOO) in January 2009, Carl Icahn, the activist shareholder who was also a big player in the MicroHoo fight, departed in late October 2009.

(Icahn has since been dumping Yahoo shares, which reached a high of 75 million and are now at about 12 million, as reported by Digital Daily’s John Paczkowski earlier today.)

In addition, Maggie Wilderotter–who was once thought to be a candidate for Yahoo’s CEO job after former CEO and co-founder Jerry Yang stepped down–left in late September 2009.

Yahoo named Sue James, a former high-ranking Ernst & Young exec, as a new board member in January.

More appointments are likely as Bartz adds directors of her choosing.

Yahoo said in a press release this afternoon that Burkle, who made his giant fortune in the supermarket business, had decided not to stand for re-election at its 2010 annual stockholders’ meeting.

Speaking for BoomTown alone, it is a welcome departure, since it was Burkle, along with Yahoo Chairman Roy Bostock, who was most influential and involved in key decision-making in Yahoo’s disastrous battle with Microsoft (MSFT) in 2007 and 2008.

The fight wounded Yahoo badly, both on Wall Street and within the organization, leaving the Silicon Valley icon struggling to return itself to relevance and growth.

Here is the full press release from Yahoo about Burkle’s leaving:

Yahoo! Announces Ron Burkle Will Not Stand for Re-Election to Board

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Feb 16, 2010–Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ: YHOO) announced today that Ron Burkle has decided not to stand for re-election to the company’s Board of Directors at its 2010 annual stockholders’ meeting in order to devote more time to his other business interests. Mr. Burkle has served on the company’s board since November 2001.

“On behalf of our entire board, I would like to thank Ron for his distinguished service and invaluable contributions to our company and board,” said Roy Bostock, chairman of Yahoo!’s Board of Directors. “Yahoo! and its stockholders have benefited greatly from the counsel, insights and objectivity Ron has brought to the company during his nine years on the board. We wish him well in his future endeavors.”

“It has been a great privilege to serve on Yahoo!’s board and to work with such an outstanding group of people,” said Ron Burkle, managing partner of The Yucaipa Companies.

Where is Microsoft (MSFT) spending its $100 million in marketing for its new Bing search service?

Well, here’s a photo that was forwarded to me showing an advertisement on top of a taxi in Manhattan of a goodbye message from Bing, as well as GE (GE) entertainment unit NBC, to the late pop legend, Michael Jackson.

It was a joint effort from Bing and NBC, said a Microsoft source. The software giant and NBC have a strong partnership surrounding the launch the search service.

Done by Show Media, which specializes in this form of advertising, the text–with a picture from Jackson’s “Thriller” album–reads: “We will miss you Michael.”

Presumably, enough of a condolence to get fans to search about him on Bing–instead of on Google (GOOG) or Yahoo (YHOO)–and get news updates from NBC’s many media outlets.

Jackson’s sudden death last week caused a massive surge of activity all over the Web, including at search engines.

Here’s the taxi-topper image (click on it to make it larger):

Can you say Wookie dancing to "Footloose" and Darth Vader to "Thriller"?

We had this video hidden away in Voices yesterday, but BoomTown had to let it run free some more!

And we are not even going to explain why Princess Leia dancing to “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” is simply divine.

Plus, there are two of these videos, one from earlier this June and one from last year.

Shot by a site called ParkSleuth, the dance contest is part of the Hyperspace Hoopla show at Star Wars Weekends at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The force is definitely with these videos (please, I had to!).
