<p>The disclosures established Olympus at the center of one of the most damaging and bizarre accounting scandals in modern business history &#8212; a coverup that extended for decades.</p>
<p>Olympus&#8217;s shares continued to plummet, falling 20 percent Wednesday morning in Tokyo following a 29 percent drop the day before, and prompting stock-lender Japan Securities Finance Co. to temporarily stop lending Olympus shares to short sellers.</p>

<p>This week, my <strong>AllThingsD</strong> partner-in-crime Walt Mossberg and I are in Asia as part of our planning for the upcoming <a href="http://allthingsd.com/conferences/asiad/about/"><strong>AsiaD</strong></a> conference in the fall.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll soon be announcing <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110711/and-so-the-asiad-speakers-begin-google-alibaba-twitter-asus-nvidia-and-more-to-come/?refcat=asiad">even more speakers</a> for the event, which takes place in Hong Kong from Oct. 19-21. </p>
<p>And while <strong>AsiaD</strong> will have a Chinese flavor, by virtue of location and given how increasingly important the country is in the digital arena, we also want to make sure that the focus is pan-Asian.</p>
<p>Hence, our trip to South Korea &#8212; as well as to Tokyo, Japan &#8212; to meet companies, look at start-ups and get a feel for the key trends of these places.</p>
<p>In Seoul earlier this week, for example, Walt and I went to visit Samsung, the company that dominates most of tech in South Korea.</p>
<p>The giant conglomerate, which has been a major maker of televisions and other consumer electronics, is now aggressively competing in the smartphone and tablet arena.</p>
<p>It has partnered with Google Android as one of many handset and tablet makers using the mobile operating system. But from our talks with execs here, all Samsung seems to think about is Apple and its powerful iPhone and iPad, which it seems to consider its one and only rival.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll be talking about all this and more at <strong>AsiaD</strong>, but until then, enjoy the video of our tour, which includes us as stars on the video wall at Samsung&#8217;s D&#8217;light exhibit in Seoul:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/03/Parker-Harris-200x300.jpg" alt="" title="Parker Harris" width="200" height="300" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-4126" />Last week I took advantage of the fact that I was in San Francisco for Hewlett-Packard&#8217;s <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110315/apotheker-sets-hewlett-packard-on-a-cloud-centric-path/">big summit meeting</a>, and stopped by the offices of Salesforce.com. There I met up with Parker Harris, executive vice president for technology, and one of the company&#8217;s four founders.</p>
<p>There&#8217;s so much going on at Salesforce it&#8217;s hard to keep track of it all. We talked a bit about Chatter.com and the result of the company&#8217;s efforts to promote it <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110206/chatter-coms-super-bowl-tv-ads-touch-off-an-ad-skirmish-on-google/">during the Super Bowl</a>, and also about the state of mobile devices and where its priorities are. But I started with a question about Japan.</p>
<p><strong>NewEnterprise: Everyone is talking about what&#8217;s been happening in Japan. You have a data center under construction there. Has there been any effect on your plans?</strong></p>
<p><strong>Harris</strong>: No. The data center is in Tokyo so it&#8217;s outside of the area directly impacted by the earthquake. We chose the location not only for the earthquake-proof nature of the building, but also for access to diesel generators, which have proven pretty important given the power situation. There&#8217;s been no interruption at all in what we&#8217;re doing.</p>
<p><strong>So what are your pain points, what are you dealing with this year? Judging by your growth I&#8217;m guessing the list is long.</strong></p>
<p>The big one is around trust, reliability, availability and scalability as we grow.  I would say it&#8217;s not the biggest pain point that we have because we&#8217;ve been focused on it for so long. We did have a period several years ago when we had a lot of issues. I think a lot of major services go through that: eBay, Google and Twitter are all examples.  I think that&#8217;s because none of them are the same. They all grow organically as the customers and technology grow. Chatter is a big focus now.</p>
<p><strong>Speaking of Chatter, how did the Super Bowl ad for Chatter.com work out?</strong></p>
<p>The Super Bowl was an interesting challenge because we had to make sure we could handle the load of Super Bowl traffic. We have an interesting relationship with Will.I.Am. He&#8217;s a friend of Marc&#8217;s. They started in this odd place where he wants to get into technology and wants to expand his brand. And Marc started talking to him about collaboration. And it was kind of a crazy idea. It was kind of a consumer play with the Super Bowl. Chatter.com is kind of a pro-sumer product where we want individuals to use it. We didn&#8217;t really think people sitting on the couch drinking beer would use it right away. But we knew it would attract some attention, but the after effect of discussion around the ad, the YouTube video of the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uv5NTFagWdI">making of the ad</a>, and all the talk around it had a good effect. It got me ready to make sure I had a Web site that could handle a lot of traffic. We partnered with Akamai to cache a lot of the static content. We did a lot of testing of the sign-up process during spikes and peak loads.</p>
<p><strong>Did you the see the spike you hoped for?</strong></p>
<p>We saw a huge spike in traffic to the Web site and traffic to the sign-up page through the following week. A lot of it was from phones, from people sitting on the couch. This is part of our transformation to what we call Cloud 2.0 that we&#8217;ve been talking about so much. Historically our Web sites didn&#8217;t work on mobile devices that well. Our app didn&#8217;t work that well. Chatter.com was a case where we did the mobile version first.</p>
<p><strong>What are you working on right now?</strong></p>
<p>With Chatter it&#8217;s about adoption, and how do we get people outside your company collaborating with you. We kind of do that now, but there&#8217;s stuff we need to do in the product to make it more usable. That would be a big next step for Chatter. In the Service Cloud we want to reinvent the low end. We&#8217;re taking Chatter as an influence, and we look at cool little companies like <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/tag/zendesk/">Zendesk</a>, which does a nice job at the low end of the market. We want to reinvent the portal experience with a Chatter influence on the Service Cloud. On the Sales Cloud we want to focus a lot on the sales rep&#8217;s experience, and I think mobile is a big factor there. Phones are a big deal, but tablets are an even bigger deal. So we&#8217;re doing a lot of design work and experimentation around the tablet experience. And how much do we re-think our experience on the tablet.</p>
<p><strong><br />
I&#8217;ve heard some people say that if you want to invest in the future of the iPad and think Apple stock is too expensive, then Salesforce is a good bet because you&#8217;re doing so much on that device. Do you think that&#8217;s fair?</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;re paying a lot of attention to the iPad. But we&#8217;re expanding that to a tablet focus. We definitely think Google&#8217;s Android will get a lot of adoption. It&#8217;s a fragmented market still but they&#8217;ll get there. I think the iPad is still winning in the enterprise. We don&#8217;t want to underestimate Android.</p>
<p><strong>What do you think of HP&#8217;s WebOS? Léo Apotheker had a lot to say about that yesterday. Do you have any interest there?</strong></p>
<p>We&#8217;re not keeping an eye on that right now. We&#8217;re looking at Research In Motion&#8217;s Playbook and seeing where that goes mainly because we have a ton of people who use the Blackberry in our customer base. It&#8217;s still the best email device. I gave mine up for an iPhone, but for cranking through email it&#8217;s still better. And because of our close relationship with RIM we&#8217;re going to see if there is something we can do with the Playbook. The mobile space is a hard place to make bets. So we&#8217;re working hard on our HTML5 strategy so that we can have something that will work that&#8217;s cloud based with other devices.</p>

<p>Now a product developed by Japan’s NEC Corp. could allow image-conscious joggers to operate their music machinery without risking mishap: The electronics maker’s new technology uses the human arm as a remote control for electronic devices, and while NEC is still figuring out what to use the technology for exactly, the most obvious application would be music players, a spokesman said, though it may also work well with videogame systems. All the runner would need to do would be to tap the left arm with the right hand, or vice versa, and the music could be played, paused or skipped.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In Japan’s mobile phone market, as in many other countries, Apple Inc.’s iPhone and rival smartphones based on Google Inc.’s Android platform are undoubtedly the hottest commodities right now. Still, Japanese mobile carriers haven’t forgotten about those who are looking for a different kind of style and glamour when choosing new handsets.</p>
<p>From clothes and accessories to gadgets, it seems that some Japanese consumers find limited-edition “brand collaboration” items absolutely irresistible. Step forward NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest carrier, with about half of the country’s cellphone subscriptions: DoCoMo just announced a new handset, to be released in March, designed and developed in collaboration with French luxury crystal glass maker Baccarat.</p>
<p>Baccarat, which was founded in the namesake town in eastern France nearly 250 years ago, opened its first Japanese store in Tokyo in 1984. The brand now has six directly-run stores in the country, including two in central Tokyo.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As Groupon and LivingSocial scramble for first-mover advantage and launch in as many as eight new markets a day, Gilt City is taking a different approach to the group-buying market.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s skimming the cream off the top.</p>
<p>It will not blanket America with offers, but rather only enter markets where there&#8217;s enough luxury experiences and high-end restaurants for its target audience of highly educated, 25-to-40 year-olds (In other words&#8211;affluent, wealthy and plain ol&#8217; rich people).</p>
<p><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1408" title="Gilt City" src="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2011/01/ATDGilt-275x203.jpg" alt="" width="275" height="203" /><a href="http://www.giltcity.com/boston">Gilt City</a> is an extension of the New York-based <a href="http://www.gilt.com/sale/women">Gilt Groupe</a>, which provides invitation-only access to products and experiences at discounted prices. Gilt City competes more directly with Groupon and LivingSocial by offering discounts to spas, restaurants and cosmetic treatments, like Botox. So far, it&#8217;s launched in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo.</p>
<p><a href="http://emoney.allthingsd.com/20101215/gilt-groupe-leans-on-mixture-of-equity-and-debt-to-fund-growth/?mod=ATD_search">Gilt Groupe has raised upward of $50 million in venture capital</a>, and will still have to contend with Amazon-based LivingSocial, and Groupon, which aims to raise up to $1 billion after spurning a buyout attempt by Google.</p>
<p>Gilt City&#8217;s President Nathan Richardson promises us it still has aggressive goals, but that its plans look different from the others. &#8220;We won&#8217;t be in a lot of secondary markets, but there&#8217;s 40 markets that have the depth we need.&#8221;</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Groupon and LivingSocial are in more than 100 markets each today.</p>
<p>&#8220;The high-end of the market is enormous,&#8221; Richardson says.</p>
<p>Unlike Groupon and LivingSocial, Gilt doesn&#8217;t send out a deal every day, but rather offers up to three deals in a weekly email, because &#8220;that makes it worthy of reading in your inbox.&#8221; In Chicago it&#8217;s up to sending two a week, and in Los Angeles and New York, it&#8217;s now sending two to three.</p>
<p>In addition to offering discounts on restaurants, spas and beauty, Richardson says Gilt is also selling experiences.</p>
<p>For example, on the Fourth of July in New York, it hosted a party on the retired aircraft carrier USS Intrepid, which was positioned right under the fireworks. &#8221;Not only did the offer sell out, we had three times as many people on wait list,&#8221; he says. &#8221;We have the opportunity to extend our curated lifestyle brand to events. People have come to expect us to be consistent. It&#8217;s not hit or miss. We want to make sure the email surprises our customers and is always on brand and something we feel proud of.&#8221;</p>
<p>To make his point, Richardson often talks about the deal&#8217;s &#8220;exclusivity,&#8221; not how deep the discount is. But why would an exclusive restaurant&#8211;which presumably has no trouble selling out&#8211;be interested in offering a discount to Gilt&#8217;s subscribers?</p>
<p>Richardson says it&#8217;s an opportunity for these brands to introduce new opportunities or extend its franchise to a new audience.</p>
<p>For instance, a new restaurant opening in New York&#8217;s Flatiron District offered a deal that introduced a new menu to the public. The chef signed the menu and visited the patron&#8217;s table for a chat. Another upscale eating establishment used Gilt to promote availability of a private dinning room.</p>
<p>Richardson says that in a survey Gilt conducted, customers said that 80 percent of the time they had the intention of going back to a restaurant, gym or skin-care provider at full price, and in 60 percent of the cases they did go back.</p>

<p>He&#8217;s in Japan. Or at least he was a few days ago, when he gave an interview to Nikkei BP while in Tokyo. Of course that doesn&#8217;t mean he&#8217;s still there now&#8211;unless he&#8217;s shooting whisky ads on the side or has struck up an unlikely friendship with a neglected newlywed.</p>
<p>HP continues to refuse to divulge his location and, to be fair, that&#8217;s company policy and were you to put the same question to Oracle about one of its execs you&#8217;d likely get a similar answer. Said an HP spokesperson, &#8220;We don&#8217;t discuss the schedules or specific whereabouts of our executives.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In Japan, if you buy a map of the world, it will probably have Japan right at the center–-with the Eurasia continent to the left, and the Americas to the right.</p>
<p>That’s what the world used to look like to the country’s electronics makers. But now, Panasonic Corp., like many of its Japanese peers, is drawing a new map.</p>
<p>“We now view Japan as just one of the regions of the world,” said President Fumio Ohtsubo at a press briefing in Tokyo last week. “We need to get rid of the notion of a ‘domestic’ market.”</p>
<p>As part of its new business plans announced last week, the company said it will do away with the current distinction between “domestic” and “global” segments of its consumer products marketing operations.</p>
<p>Even after a number of Japanese consumer electronics brands, like Sony and Panasonic, expanded globally and became household names around the world in the 1980s, Japan was always very much home turf, where they developed and manufactured most of their gadgets and appliances before shipping them overseas. And the country’s fairly large population of more than 120 million, its robust economy and the wealth of its consumers meant the domestic market was too important to ignore.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Ride a Tokyo subway and you are almost guaranteed to see two groups of people: Those who are sleeping — not just casual nappers, but folks who are full-on, deep-REM-cycle, drool-down-the-chin asleep. The other group comprises people staring blankly or furiously punching the keys of clamshell phones with giant screens.</p>
<p>So it shouldn’t come as much surprise that a survey by research group comScore’s MobiLens service finds that the Japanese are the “most connected” mobile-phone users in the world. Three of every four Japanese use their phones to either browse the Web, access applications or download content to their handsets. This compares to 44 percent in the United States and 39 percent in Europe.</p>
<p>Dig into the survey and some interesting trends emerge. Only 40 percent of Japanese send text messages, while two-thirds of Americans and 82 percent of Europeans engage in short message service, or SMS. Why is this?</p>

He spearheads many of DCM’s investments in Japanese companies from the firm’s office in Tokyo, and this week participated in a $12 million Series B funding for augmented-reality company Tonchidot Corp.</p>
<p>With a couple of downloads and the camera application on a smart phone, users of Tonchidot’s software can view information on their phone screen about their physical location, drawn from geo-tagged content submitted by users. They can also battle virtual monsters or defuse virtual bombs in real-world environments. Tonchidot’s technology combines the “check-in” elements of companies like Foursquare Inc. with social games similar to those of Zynga Game Network Inc.</p>
<p>Honda says his favorite Tonchidot game is called Sekai Hero, in which he checks in to a location to collect points with his pink-haired monk avatar. He can also fight monsters that might be lurking in the location’s augmented reality space. “I play quite a bit,” he said. “My wife is actually fed up with me.”</p>

<p>When a person stands in front of the screen, a camera captures his image and a sensor determines the person&#8217;s gender and approximate age.</p>
<p>Based on that reading, the machine &#8220;recommends&#8221; drinks that fit the customer&#8217;s profile.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this machine, we can actually see who is buying what, instead of relying on educated guesses,&#8221; said Toshinari Sasagawa, general manager of sales at an East Japan Railway subsidiary that operates vending machines in train stations.</p>

<p>Union Square Partners and Hubert Burda Media are also investors, as well as Flickr co-founder Caterina Fake.</p>
<p>Etsy has raised almost $52 million overall since its 2005 founding, which gives it a valuation of more than $300 million.</p>
<p>Etsy&#8217;s CEO is founder Rob Kalin, who took over again as CEO at the start-up last year.</p>
<p>But Freed brings more solid management with a global flavor to Etsy, having been a director of international product management at Google (GOOG). He left the company two years ago.</p>
<p>In that job, he focused on the localization and development of the search giant&#8217;s international products and had also worked in international online sales and operations, including setting up Google&#8217;s online advertising operations in London, Paris, Hamburg, Tokyo and Sydney.</p>
<p>He also established Google&#8217;s multilingual online operations center in Dublin.</p>
<p>Oh, yes, Freed speaks nine languages, which will come in handy at Etsy, since it helps craftspeople globally sell handmade items online.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A former president of Fujitsu Ltd. filed a lawsuit Tuesday against the Japanese technology company and four of its executives, seeking a total of about 380 million yen ($4.5 million) in damages, his lawyers said.</p>
<p>In a statement released Tuesday, Kuniaki Nozoe&#8217;s lawyers said Fujitsu made false accusations of links to organized crime against Mr. Nozoe and pressured him to resign without giving him a chance to defend himself. As well as seeking compensation, Mr. Nozoe is demanding that Fujitsu place an apology advertisement in national newspapers.</p>
<p>Mr. Nozoe, who resigned as president last September, filed the lawsuit with the Tokyo District Court on Tuesday morning, the lawyers said.</p>
<p>A Fujitsu spokesman declined to comment, saying the company has yet to receive notification of the lawsuit.<br />
The case is a rare example in Japan&#8217;s usually staid business world of a top executive engaging in a public fight with his former employer. Mr. Nozoe first went public in March with his claim that he was forced out of the company.</p>

<p>Online games phenom Zynga and Japanese Internet and telecom giant SoftBank announced a joint venture to develop and distribute social games across Japan.</p>
<p>The new Tokyo-based service will be called Zynga Japan and is Zynga&#8217;s first foray into that country.</p>
<p>The companies also said SoftBank had completed a $150 million investment in Zynga, which <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100615/zyngas-most-lucrative-game-charm-the-investors">had been previously reported</a>.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s Zynga&#8217;s second major move into Asia. In May, the start-up acquired China-based social gaming developer XPD Media.</p>
<p>The San Francisco-based Zynga, of course, has been on a tear of late too, striking deals with <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100526/yahoo-announces-partnership-with-zynga">Yahoo</a> and <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20100727/google-develops-a-facebook-rival/">Google</a>, as it seeks to expand its distribution from Facebook, the social networking platform where it first took off.</p>
<p>Zynga also recently <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100518/farmville-creator-not-leaving-facebook-after-all">signed a five-year agreement</a> with Facebook.</p>
<p>SoftBank made other digital news yesterday when it announced that it would <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100726/yahoo-japan-confirms-google-switch-for-both-paid-and-algo-search/">switch Yahoo Japan&#8217;s algorithmic and paid search</a> from Yahoo (YHOO) to Google (GOOG).</p>

<p>In Melbourne, photographer Matt Irwin avoided the lines and had two pre-ordered iPads delivered Friday morning. “I’ve got them in my hot little hands now and can’t wait to have a play with them,” he said.</p>
<p>Mr. Irwin, who specializes in large-format prints, said the iPad’s screen made it a useful tool for a visual artist.</p>
<p>“As a photographer, it’s great as a mobile presentation platform,” he said. “I’m planning on integrating them quite heavily into my business.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/01/Apple-Tablets.jpg" alt="" title="Apple-Tablets" width="350" height="233" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-33520" />After months of feverish speculation and as many years of wishful thinking, Apple uncrated its tablet computer&#8211;the iPad&#8211;at an <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100118/apple-announces-jan-27-special-event/">invitation-only event in San Francisco this morning</a>.</p>
<h4 class="subhed">Liveblog</h4>
<p><strong>9:13 am PT:</strong> Quite a scene here this morning; the queue for media credentials is nearly as long as some of the iPhone 3G launch lines I saw a few years back. Moments ago, an Apple PR rep slipped through the doors of the Yerba Buena Center to ask that the press waiting outside take two big steps back. The last time that happened to me, I was at a Jesus Lizard show.</p>

<p><strong>9:54 am:</strong> The doors open and the press enters the event hall. Initially, at least, the scene is pretty crazy. &#8220;This is like the subway in New York,&#8221; an attendee behind me jokes. More like the subway in Tokyo, I think to myself.</p>
<p>A Bob Dylan soundtrack plays as media and guests file in. It&#8217;s momentarily interrupted by a &#8220;please take your seats, our event is about to begin&#8221; announcement.</p>
<p><strong>10:00 am:</strong> Interesting stage set-up today: Instead of an empty stage or a simple table, there are a black leather chair and side-table. Lights are dimming&#8230;.</p>
<p>And Steve Jobs takes the stage to a standing ovation.</p>
<p>&#8220;We want to kick off 2010 by introducing a truly magical product, but first a few updates&#8230;.A few weeks ago we sold our 250 millionth iPod&#8230;I didn&#8217;t want to let that moment pass without recognizing it.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:05 am:</strong> Jobs offers a quick overview of Apple&#8217;s retail operations and some of the new stores it has opened recently before moving on to the iTunes App Store. &#8220;A few weeks ago we announced that three billion applications had been downloaded from the App Store&#8211;that&#8217;s in 18 months&#8230;amazing.&#8221;<br />
He notes, as he did in the company&#8217;s earnings release the other day, that Apple is now a $50 billion company.</p>
<p>Apple is a mobile devices company, says Jobs, &#8220;the largest mobile devices company in the world now. Larger than Sony&#8217;s mobile device business, larger than Samsung&#8217;s and, astonishingly, Nokia&#8217;s as well.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:07 am:</strong> A quick historical overview now. Jobs touches on the first PowerBook, introduced in 1991. He moves on to the MacBook and then the iPhone.</p>

<p>&#8220;All of us use laptops and smartphones, now. And the question has arisen lately: Is there room for a device in the middle?&#8230;We&#8217;ve pondered this question as well.&#8221;</p>
<p>This &#8220;middle&#8221; device, says Jobs, must be better at doing certain tasks than either the laptop or smartphone. If there&#8217;s going to be a third-device category, it must be better at browsing the Web, video, photos, music, etc.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some folks say this device is a netbook&#8230;. The problem is, netbooks aren&#8217;t better at anything.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am:</strong> But we have something that is, says Jobs, &#8220;and it&#8217;s called the iPad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Photos of the device appear on the giant screens. Very thin. Very slick. &#8220;IPad offers the best Web browsing experience there is&#8211;way better than laptops.&#8221; There is no camera  that I can see. That&#8217;s not going to go over well with folks hoping for a device that supports video iChat.</p>
<p><strong>10:13 am:</strong> Further details: The &#8220;iPad is a dream to type on,&#8221; Jobs says, pointing out its life-sized onscreen keyboard. It&#8217;s also an awesome way to enjoy media. iTunes, iTunes University and YouTube HD support are built in.</p>
<p><strong>10:14 am:</strong> Jobs sits down to demo the device: &#8220;Using this thing is remarkable. It&#8217;s so much more intimate and capable than the laptop.&#8221; He loads Safari and surfs over to the New York Times (NYT). The iPad loads quickly and Jobs is able to easily navigate the page, loading stories and zooming in on articles.</p>
<p><strong>10:15 am:</strong> Demonstrating landscape and portrait now. &#8220;This device adapts to the way I want to use it.&#8221;</p>
<p>Definitely an impressive browsing experience. Fast and elegant.</p>
<p>Now, an overview of Mail. Also elegant. Nice split-screen presentation. Hit compose, and a nice onscreen keyboard pops up. Jobs types out a message to his colleagues at Apple. Seems relatively easy.</p>
<p><strong>10:19 am:</strong> Moving on to iPad&#8217;s photo capabilities. It supports iPhoto&#8217;s Events, Faces and Places features.  It also offers built-in slideshows complete with soundtracks and transitions.</p>
<p>Running a slideshow demo, Jobs pauses and looks out at the audience with a Chesire Cat-wide grin. He&#8217;s clearly relishing this moment.</p>

<p><strong>10:22 am:</strong>: The iTunes experience on iPad is much as you would expect. Similar, if not identical, to what the software currently offers. Calendar and Contacts apps are also nice and, again, similar to what you&#8217;d find on a MacBook or iPhone.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am:</strong> Demoing Google Maps now. The iPad supports Google Street View and the implementation is very slick.</p>
<p><strong>10:25 am:</strong> Moving on to video. Jobs calls up an HD clip from Google&#8217;s (GOOG) YouTube and displays it in both portrait and landscape. That finished, he fires up iTunes and loads &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; to demo the device&#8217;s video features, scrubbing, etc. Then he shows us a clip from Pixar&#8217;s &#8220;Up.&#8221; Tap to go full-screen. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t that wonderful?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:27 am:</strong> Watching that is nothing like actually having one in your hands, says Jobs.</p>
<ul>
<li>iPad is one-half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds, and comes with 9.7 inch IPS display&#8211;&#8220;very high-quality display&#8221;</li>
<li>Full capacitive multitouch</li>
<li>16GB-64GB flash storage</li>
<li>iPad is powered by our Apple&#8217;s custom silicon&#8211;&#8220;We did it inhouse and it just screams,&#8221; says Jobs.</li>
<li>Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, accelerometer, compass.</li>
<li>Battery life: 10 hours.</li>
</ul>
<p>&#8220;And in addition to 10 hours of battery life, iPad offers a full month of standby time,&#8221; Jobs notes. &#8220;It&#8217;s also a good environmental citizen,&#8221; he adds, noting that it&#8217;s a very green device.</p>
<p><strong>10:31 am:</strong>  Jobs invites Scott Forestall to the stage to talk about apps on the device.</p>
<p>&#8220;We built the iPad to run virtually every app in the App Store right out of the box,&#8221; Forestall says.</p>
<p>Evidently, a built-in pixel-doubling feature automatically scales iPhone apps to full-screen iPad apps.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am:</strong> Forestall runs an unmodified racing game from the App Store. He first demos it in the screen size of an iPhone. Then, using the pixel-doubling feature, he blows it out to full screen. Very slick.</p>
<p>&#8220;So you can buy the iPad, take it home, hook it up and download all your iPhone apps and run them with no problem at all,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>Forestall announces a new iPhone software development kit specifically geared to the iPad. He notes that iPad-specific applications will be featured &#8220;front and center&#8221; in the App Store.<br />
He then invites Gameloft&#8217;s Mark Hickey to the stage to demo some new games the company has developed using the new SDK.</p>
<p>Hickey notes that the iPad&#8217;s additional screen space is a boon for developers, particularly those building games. He demos a first-person shooter that showcases this. &#8220;We&#8217;re now able to interact with the game world in ways that we weren&#8217;t able to before.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:40 am</strong>: Next up, the New York Times. Martin Nisenholtz takes the stage to talk about its iPad effort.</p>
<p>After talking up the Times iPhone app, Nisenholtz segues to the the paper&#8217;s new iPad app: &#8220;We think we&#8217;ve captured the experience and essence of reading the newspaper.&#8221;</p>
<p>The app is largely what you&#8217;d expect. Tap to resize text, zoom, breaking news updates, video. &#8220;This is everything you love about the paper and everything you love about the Web.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:44 am:</strong> Now, a painting application called Brushes that was famously used to create a New Yorker cover.<br />
The app is impressive enough on iPhone; it&#8217;s even more so on the iPad. It supports &#8220;playback&#8221; of paintings, and as the presenter notes, brings us one step closer to a real virtual painting studio.</p>

<p><strong>10:46 am:</strong> EA&#8217;s Travis Boatman take&#8217;s the stage. The topic of his presentation: Need For Speed.</p>
<p>&#8220;Building for the iPad is a little bit like holding a high-def TV screen a few inches from your face,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>The iPad version of Need for Speed boasts a number of touch-activated enhancements: Tap on the car to view its interior, tap on the rear-view mirror to look behind you.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am:</strong> Up next: MLB.com&#8217;s Chad Evans. He demos the outfit&#8217;s iPad-optimized app, which uses the device&#8217;s additional screen space to display video excerpts and MLB TV.</p>
<p>MLB TV can be streamed like and enhanced with onscreen stats and data. &#8220;This big display really allows us to create a much more immersive experience,&#8221; Evans says.</p>
<p><strong>10:52 am:</strong> Forestall returns to the stage to make another brief plug for the SDK before Jobs takes over for him.<br />
&#8220;Let me show you another one of our apps that we&#8217;re very excited about,&#8221; Jobs says. &#8220;An e-book reader.&#8221;</p>
<p>Behind him a photo of Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) Kindle appears. &#8220;Amazon did a great job with their reader and we&#8217;re standing on their shoulders here&#8230;.Today we&#8217;re announcing the iBooks store,&#8221; says Jobs, adding that it will be supported initially by Penguin, Simon &#038; Schuster and a number of other big publishers.</p>
<p>The iBooks Store interface begins with a simple bookshelf view. Tap the screen and it loads a more iTunes-like view. Purchase a book and it&#8217;s added to your bookshelf with a slick little animation.</p>
<p>The reading experience seems very appealing. Much more book-like. From where I sit, the pages look like they&#8217;re written on paper.</p>
<p>&#8220;We use the e-pub format, the most popular open-book format in the world,&#8221; says Jobs. &#8220;We think iPad is going to be a very popular e-reader not just for bestsellers, but for textbooks as well.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:58 am:</strong> And here&#8217;s another new product announcement: A new version of iWork tweaked for use on the iPad. Jobs invites Phil Schiller on stage to demo it.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have a completely new version of Keynote, a completely new version of Pages and a completely new version of Numbers&#8211;all optimized for multitouch.</p>

<p>Schiller demos Keynote first. Creating presentations appears intuitive and simple&#8211;a slide navigator on the left, tap to load individual slides in the main window, drag to rearrange.</p>
<p>Nice use of multitouch gestures to enhance the app. Pinch to resize photos, tap to insert animations and transitions. These are all fairly advanced techniques and the device seems to handle them well.</p>
<p><strong>11:05 am:</strong> Moving on to Pages now. Also impressive, though creating a written document on a tablet device like the iPad seems like it might be a drag. A nice tool for editing, though. Simple controls.</p>

<p><strong>11:07 am:</strong> Moving on to Numbers. This application also makes good use of multitouch gestures and boasts a data-entry keyboard along with some 250 built-in functions. The software&#8217;s gesture capabilities makes Excel look antediluvian.<br />
Powerful and <em>fast</em>.</p>
<p>So what&#8217;s Apple going to charge for iWork? $9.99 each, says Schiller, who notes that all three applications are compatible with their Mac versions.</p>
<p>Jobs returns to the stage, grinning. &#8220;Isn&#8217;t that great?&#8221; he asks for what&#8217;s easily the 10th time. iPad, he says, will synch to Mac or PC via USB.</p>
<p><strong>11:14 am:</strong> Evidently, there will be two iPad models&#8211;one with Wi-Fi-only and one with Wi-Fi and 3G. The 3G device will come with two plans: 250 MB per month for $14.99, unlimited data for $29.99. </p>
<p>And who&#8217;s the carrier? AT&#038;T.</p>
<p>A small groan ripples through the audience.</p>
<p>Jobs allows that AT&#038;T is also throwing in free Wi-Fi at its hotspots. He follows that up by noting that there are no contracts for the iPad. You can cancel at anytime.</p>

<p>All iPad 3G models are unlocked and they use new GSM micro SIMS, so chances are they will just work, Jobs says, after noting that Apple hasn&#8217;t yet worked out international carrier deals.</p>
<p><strong>11:16 am:</strong> Now a quick overview as a wrap-up. Jobs touts the overall tablet experience along with the new iBook app and iBook Store. &#8220;This is an amazing product with tremendous breadth. What should we charge for it?&#8230;When we set out to develop the iPad we not only had aggressive UI goals, we had aggressive price goals, because we wanted to put this in the hands of as many people as possible&#8230;.IPad pricing starts not at $999, but $499,&#8221; Jobs says to a huge round of applause.</p>
<p>$499 for 16GB base model.<br />
32GB for $599.<br />
64GB for $699.<br />
Adding 3G requires an additional fee.</p>
<p>Apple will ship Wi-Fi models in 60 days and 3G models in 90.</p>
<p><strong>11:20 am:</strong>  Apple has created new accessories for the iPad: A standard dock and a second dock with a keyboard attached to it. &#8220;Keep one of these in your den and you can write the next &#8220;War and Peace&#8221; on it.&#8221; The final accessory, a new case that doubles as a stand.</p>
<p>Running a video now. It features a number of Apple execs enthusiastically talking up the iPad.</p>

<p><strong>11:25 am:</strong> Let me circle back here for a moment to pricing. Adding 3G to iPad requires an additional $130. So we&#8217;re talking $629 for the 16GB model, $729 for the 32GB and $829 for the 64GB version.</p>
<p>Designer Jon Ives on the iPad: &#8220;In many ways iPad defines our vision, our sense of what&#8217;s next.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:32 am:</strong> Jobs returns to the stage and recalls the &#8220;middle device&#8221; scenario he mentioned earlier today. &#8220;Can we create this new category? The bar is set pretty high, but we think we&#8217;ve got the goods.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;The reason the iPad is going to be so great is because Apple has always strived to be at the junction of technology and liberal arts.&#8221;</p>
<p>And with that he concludes. Lights go up and Dylan begins playing over the speakers again.</p>

		<description><![CDATA[Right now, BoomTown is sitting right behind the very affable Jason Hirschhorn, chief product officer of MySpace, who is here to make one of the many partner announcements with Google at its "search event" in Silicon Valley today.

<p>Right now, BoomTown is sitting right behind the very affable Jason Hirschhorn, chief product officer of MySpace, who is here to make one of the many partner announcements with Google at its &#8220;search event&#8221; in Silicon Valley today.</p>
<p>I also ran right into Twitter&#8217;s Biz Stone at the coffee stand. He is also here to talk about the new features Google (GOOG) is adding to its search repertoire, although he is remaining mum until the program starts in five minutes.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s about real-time search, of course, given that the partners visiting today are all real-time search folks.</p>
<p>The confab&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091207/liveblogging-the-google-confab-at-10-am-pt-searchtastic/">being held at the Computer History Museum</a> near the Googleplex HQ&#8211;is essentially Google&#8217;s rejoinder to last week&#8217;s event by Microsoft (MSFT), which announced a bunch of new features for its Bing search service, including mapping updates.</p>
<p>Of course, because it is Google, the sound system rocks, the food is better and it is more overproduced than &#8220;Dancing With the Stars.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:13 am PT:</strong> The event is opened by Marissa Mayer, who runs search products and user experience for Google.</p>
<p>And it takes exactly 13 seconds for there to be a classic Silicon Valley buzzword. Modes! Translation: It is how we use the Web.</p>
<p>Mayer is outlining Google&#8217;s key components in the future of search. Along with modes, they are media, language and personalization.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are a company that likes to launch early and often,&#8221; she said, adding that Google has launched 33 search innovations in 67 days.</p>
<p>In other words, take that, Bing. Oh, dear, giant Google just boasted about its innovation cred and is apparently a little worried about weensie Bing.</p>
<p><strong>10:18 am:</strong> Mayer welcomes Vic Gundotra, VP of engineering, who will talk about mobile search.</p>
<p>He begins by noting that no one knows where all the new innovations in computing will lead, much as no one got the Gutenberg press way back in the olden days.</p>
<p>Professor Gundotra then launches into a computing history lesson, with stops at Moore&#8217;s Law (better, faster, cheaper) and how one understood all the zillions of computing connections that would occur.</p>
<p>The &#8220;missing ingredient,&#8221; noted Gundotra, is the cloud.</p>
<p>Next, he moves to a demo to show where Google is headed. Gundotra nails a voice query on an Android phone about President Obama at the G8 Summit with the French president. Everyone cheers.</p>
<p>Gundotra now tries to top himself with a Mandarin query for McDonald&#8217;s in Beijing. He sticks it.</p>
<p>He then announces support for the voice search on mobile devices for Japan, bringing up a Japanese speaker.</p>
<p>One voice query is a very long one for a favorite restaurant in Tokyo near the Google office there. Does Google find it? Of course Google does.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our dreams at Google go way beyond what you just saw,&#8221; says Gundotra, who opines on a real-time interpreter on the phone. Of course, he demos the interpreter, which he said will show up sometime in 2010.</p>
<p>It works, again. Natch! These are big-brained dudes here at Google, so don&#8217;t mess with them.</p>
<p><strong>10:30 am:</strong> Gundotra moves to locations, which he says will be a key element of future versions of Google search. You know, Red Sox comes up in Boston, data appear for nearby stores for digital cameras.</p>
<p>He shows off the &#8220;Near Me Now&#8221; feature, which is kind of like those many Apple (AAPL) iPhone apps, like Yelp. It explores stuff nearby. It will be available on Google mobile maps for Android right away.</p>
<p>Next, he announces a Google Labs project called Google Goggles, which takes pictures of something and then identifies it. I have seen this kind of thing in a lot of labs at various tech companies.</p>
<p>Gundotra, who is a slick dude at presentations, uses the example of being a wine expert without being one. He scans a wine bottle and then Google quickly shows info on it.</p>
<p><em>Oooooh, aaaaaah.</em></p>
<p>Gundotra uses the service to identify a Japanese landmark successfully.</p>
<p>Someday, he predicts, your phone will be a &#8220;mouse pointer&#8221; to the world.</p>
<p><strong>10:42 am:</strong> Back to Mayer, who talks about media relevancy in search. Google Fellow Amit Singhal is the man on deck.</p>
<p>&#8220;What we&#8217;re going to announce today is one of the most exciting things in my career,&#8221; said Singhal, who first launches into a short history of information flow.</p>
<p>Campfires, more Gutenberg! Also some pictures of old Google servers. I feel so educated; plus, Singhal is pretty funny for a supergeek.</p>
<p>Now, he gets to the news: &#8220;We are here today to announce Google real-time search.&#8221;</p>
<p>The demo is launched and it shows news scrolling as it is produced. &#8220;This is the first time ever,&#8221; enthuses Singhal.</p>
<p>It looks cool, but reminds me a lot of old tickers that used to be in the newsroom at the Washington Post. You know, the kind of newspaper that Google is often accused of killing off.</p>
<p>Irony alert! I wonder if that will scroll up soon.</p>
<p>The scrolling also includes Twitter updates. One tweet by Googler Matt Cutts about the Google real-time search launch showed up immediately.</p>
<p>The latest results will be available on the search options and in preferences and will also be hyperlocal and mobile on the iPhone and Android.</p>
<p>&#8220;Real-time search becomes incredibly powerful, since it shows you exactly what you need in your geography,&#8221; said Singhal.</p>
<p>Singhal is a font of news. He also announces that Google Trends is moving out of the labs and will also show real-time results.</p>
<p>He launches into the &#8220;how&#8221; of how Google did all this. Well, it was really, <em>really</em> hard, said Singhal, because there are a badillion real-time pieces of data out there to analyze and render.</p>
<p>And which company, with its massive computing power, can make this relevant and hand over the info quickly? Three guesses, and the first two don&#8217;t count.</p>
<p>Recap: Real-time search, latest search option, update option, mobile real-time search and Google Trends in the real-time world.</p>
<p>&#8220;At Google we will not be satisfied,&#8221; said Singhal, until Google can get you info at the speed of light.</p>
<p><strong>11:07 am:</strong> Just to stick a true fork into anything Microsoft could come up with, Mayer comes back up and announces Google&#8217;s Facebook, MySpace and Twitter partnerships as part of the launch of real-time search.</p>
<p>Facebook will be sending in public feeds and MySpace is providing all of them, as is Twitter.</p>
<p>Google now has eyes and ears, says Mayer. When it gets a whole body, get ready to run for your life.</p>
<p><strong>Q&#038;A time!</strong></p>
<p>The first question is about whether Goggles could have facial recognition. Gundotra says Google could do that, but will not until the privacy issues are worked out. Operative thought here: Google is capable of doing this. Eek!</p>
<p>The next question is about advertising opportunities in these new features. Singhal does not really answer, but says businesses will develop.</p>
<p>The next question is about how much content Google is crawling. Answer: About a billion pages a day.</p>
<p>Gundotra adds that the first launch is only available on English-speaking locales. But it will move into other languages next year.</p>
<p>What about spammers taking advantage of real-time search? Oh, says Singhal, they will get a beat-down from Matt Cutts, who is in charge of spam-killing at Google.</p>
<p>Wouldn&#8217;t that make a good reality show? &#8220;The Spam Hunters!&#8221;</p>
<p>About questions on real-time partnerships, Mayer said Google wanted to be comprehensive.</p>
<p>Mayer will not disclose the details of any financial payments for these real-time feeds. Of course, Google is paying up.</p>
<p>And now a question about whether Google will limit development on non-Android phones. &#8220;Absolutely not,&#8221; says Gundrotra.</p>
<p>At last, a zinger question: Do you feel that Google will be responsible for the death of journalism and doesn&#8217;t that make Google a scary black hole of, presumably, evil?</p>
<p><em>Awkward!</em></p>
<p>Singhal casts about for an answer, which is mostly about bringing info to users, which is not an answer.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really about user empowerment,&#8221; he says. Uh-oh, we&#8217;re doomed!</p>
<p>Mayer jumps in nervously to shoot this meme down and says Google is about facilitation and not decimation.</p>
<p>The PR dude onstage also throws in the boilerplate about Google sending gazillions of clicks all over.</p>
<p>But the point is made: Today Google&#8211;which owns universal search&#8211;just made its big move in real-time search.</p>
<p>The next question is about the difference between Google&#8217;s practice of wanting people off the page and onto the Web and Microsoft Bing&#8217;s focus on topic pages of rich information.</p>
<p>Mayer is sticking with quick on and off for Google.</p>
<p>And what about junk information on the silly side that comes with more real-time search, like dead celebs who are not dead, or really untrue information on important issues?</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a hard problem, says Singhal, who says Google is working on it.</p>
<p>What about disabling the real-time updates rather than just being able to turn them on and off. Nope, says Singhal. Mayer notes that this may change.</p>
<p>But the truth is: With the big search giant jumping in, real-time search is most definitely here to stay.</p>

In remarks at a press conference in Tokyo Thursday, Ballmer said that Windows 7’s first 10 days at market have been more successful than those of any of its predecessors. </p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had a great response here in Japan,&#8221; <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9140360/Windows_7_seeing_fantastic_sales_in_Japan_says_Ballmer">Ballmer said</a>. &#8220;Certainly we&#8217;ve seen initial sales be fantastic. The first ten days were bigger than the first ten days of XP or Vista or any other Windows launch that we have done.&#8221;</p>
<p>And indeed that would seem to be the case. According to research outfit NPD, Microsoft (MSFT) sales of Windows 7 in its first few days on the market were more than triple Vista sales for the same length of time.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When Nintendo’s top brass gathered in Tokyo to speak to analysts Friday, they admitted they had been caught off-guard by the slowdown in Wii demand.</p>
<p>To the dismay of analysts and fans, they did not announce a new Wii console, as some had hoped, or a revolutionary new game.</p>
<p>But they dropped a few hints about where they might be heading.</p>
<p>Nintendo’s legendary game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, who helped to create Super Mario Bros., Zelda and a host of other hit games, said a new Zelda game for the Wii will take advantage of the console’s Wii Motion Plus controllers to allow for better swordplay. It is being targeted for a 2010 release.</p>

<p>“iPhone 3G S Available at AT&#038;T Tomorrow.” That’s the title of the press release that just landed in my inbox&#8211;even as <a href="http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/06/18/lines-form-for-the-new-iphone-in-new-york-and-tokyo/">lines form outside Apple (AAPL) Stores</a> in New York City and Tokyo (above). Never hurts to state the obvious, I suppose.</p>

<p>Of course, <a href="http://www.whatisleft.org/">Sacca blogs</a> and <a href="http://twitter.com/sacca">tweets</a> a <em>LOT</em>, even as he travels incessantly to Ethiopia, Dubai, and various places where Bono might be hanging.</p>
<p>(Thus, don&#8217;t miss this very funny mocking of Sacca&#8217;s tweets under the name <a href="http://twitter.com/fakesacca">fakesacca</a>, reportedly done by Googler Dick Costolo, with pitch-perfect tweets like: &#8220;Wow, not sure what city i&#8217;m in. The food says London, the prices say Tokyo, and the women say Los Angeles. I&#8217;m going w/ Hong Kong,&#8221; &#8220;Going over my SXSW talk on &#8216;why I should have equity in your startup.&#8217; Getting inspired just proofreading it&#8221; and, my personal favorite, &#8220;If you&#8217;re pole-dancing &#038; heli-skiing &#038; in the ny times w/in 12hr of each other, something has either gone horribly wrong or horribly RIGHT!&#8221;)</p>
<p>With all this dabbling Sacca does, BoomTown has decided to dub the Silicon Valley gadfly: The Start-Up Whisperer.</p>
<p>Here is my video interview with him, about those start-ups like Twitter and about what&#8217;s next in tech innovation, all while a lovely piano player at San Francisco&#8217;s Zuni restaurant tinkled in the background:</p>

He distinguished himself as a correspondent for TIME in Asia for nearly a decade, serving as TIME bureau chief in both New Delhi and Tokyo, and then left to dabble in technology in Silicon Valley. He then returned to Time Inc. as a senior correspondent at <em><span style="font-style: italic;">FORTUNE</span></em> under John Huey, and was later charged to start eCompany Now magazine and website, eventually to be named Business 2.0. After three years of hard labor in the midst of the tech blow out, John convinced him to leave his beloved northern California to run Time Inc. Interactive.</span></span></p>

We went from being a digital backwater, or “black hole” as one Time Inc. notable once called it, to joining the highest ranks of digital media with great properties like People.com, CNNMoney.com and SI.com, to name a few. Time Inc.&#8217;s digital leadership under Ned has been extraordinary. Our websites now receive more than 26 million unique visitors each month and we are one of the top 20 largest online media properties in monthly unique visitors, page views and time spent per user.</span></span></p>

In a way, Ned and his TII team succeeded so well at it that, well, there’s not much revolutionizing left to do. The time has arrived to move all the digital responsibility to the new teams in our new Business Units, where, to no surprise, many of the key leaders are folks Ned brought into the company.</span></span></p>
