Under normal circumstances, if the CEOs of big public companies–like, say, Cisco (CSCO), Microsoft (MSFT) and Comcast (CMCSA)–speak in front of an audience of bigwigs, it’s news.

And who knows? Maybe John Chambers, Steve Ballmer and Brian Roberts will indeed say something important today and tomorrow at Quadrangle’s Foursquare conference. Chrysler’s Robert Nardelli is speaking too. He might have something newsworthy to say.

But you are unlikely to read about it.

That’s because there’s no press allowed at the private equity shop’s annual conference, which starts this afternoon at New York’s Plaza Hotel.

Or rather, there’s some press at the event. But they’ll be on stage. And they won’t be telling their readers and listeners what they saw and heard.

CNBC’s David Faber, Becky Quick and Maria Bartiromo, for instance, will be moderating panels over the next few days. So will the New York Times’ Andrew Ross Sorkin. And network TV news bigshots Katie Couric, George Stephanopoulos and Brian Williams will answer questions themselves (Portfolio’s Matt Cooper will be moderating that one).

Am I crabby because I asked (nicely) and couldn’t get in myself? Nah. It’s Quadrangle’s event, and they can run it any way they want. But it does look like a pretty good gathering of worthies. Maybe I’ll park myself in the Plaza’s lobby and see if I can bump into some of them.

Want to join me? Here’s the agenda for next two days:

Tuesday 11/11
2:00 PM WELCOME
Joshua L. Steiner (Quadrangle)

Get it done.

While Microsoft’s (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer and Yahoo’s (YHOO) CEO Jerry Yang hemmed and hawed about what had happened in their disastrous takeover battle that ended not with a bang, but a whimper, everyone else who appeared onstage at the sixth D: All Things Digital conference last week was a bit more definitive about what should occur now:

Get it done.

From Thomson Reuters’ (TRI) Tom Glocer to IAC’s (IACI) Barry Diller to TiVo’s (TIVO) Tom Rogers to Rupert Murdoch of News Corp. (NWS) (who simply said: “I’d get on with it.”), it seemed obvious to one and all that the only way either had a prayer of catching up with online search leader Google (GOOG) was to join forces.

It seems, according to many sources, that the pair are now in serious talks again, which–if they are smart–will come to some resolution, yes or no, within the next week. (You’ll get first wind of what’s what, as soon as much-frustrated bankers begin their leaking to major news outlets.)

Whatever the case, I dearly hope these discussions are not bogged down as they have been before.

Not in the bits and pieces niggling of some complex partial deal to buy search and spin of this and that here and there in a configuration sure to confuse everyone.

And not continuing with the endless roundelay of price negotiations that seems to have needlessly taken focus off the ball–which is to create a competitive alternative to the incessant brainiacs of Google (and if you want any more proof of that, see this New York Times piece today about the search giant’s data-crunching abilities).

It seems $33 to $34 a share will still wrap the whole thing up and, if Microsoft was serious about its intentions to buy Yahoo when it first made its foray in February, that seems doable.

Because, if Ballmer is serious about his contention, which he made fervently onstage at D6, that the software giant keeps “coming and coming and coming,” it simply cannot make that attack from a piddling 9% market share in the online search business.

One of the most interesting takeaways I had from last week’s interview Walt Mossberg and I did with him and Chairman Bill Gates (who seemed about as underwhelmed by a Yahoo deal as possible without slumping over asleep) was the early focus at the company on fiscal conservatism.

Baked into its DNA, as it turns out, is a fear of bankruptcy even.

While that was funny to hear about–complete with worried financial calculations on sheets of yellow paper stuffed in couches early on–it seems to continue to this day, despite Microsoft’s huge treasure chest of cash.

But Ballmer should slough off that tendency, as Microsoft can afford all of Yahoo and it should if it wants to make the boldest case possible that it will compete with Google.

As for Yahoo, both Yang and President Sue Decker are to be lauded for showing up to answer Walt’s questions (and one by me via remote video about leadership, which neither actually did answer) about the company and its future.

Their sincerity and love of Yahoo and its products and people was clear and even touching, making it clear that companies are a true reflection of its leaders.

But, while making good points about the he-said-she-said nature of the past Microsoft talks, the pair still could not adequately and passionately explain what Yahoo is exactly, which everyone I spoke to in the halls was surprised and even disappointed by.

Moreover, their weariness for the next phase of tumult that will come if Yahoo remains independent was apparent in both their body language and low energy levels, especially when compared to others onstage like Murdoch, Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and, of course, the frenetic Ballmer.

Yang and Decker need big-time help and they need it now, help that cannot come from their own dwindling energies and that of their much-beleaguered troops.

Still, they also deserve credit for this very funny spoof video of advice they have been getting.

I especially like the turn by famed investor Warren Buffett best, with his “buy low, sell high” tip.

But I would fiddle with that to change it a little bit for Yahoo today: Just sell high enough.

A closet geek who loves to talk about gadgets, Tom Glocer started off his career at a start-up focused on software for educational games. He also was a mergers and acquisitions lawyer, but try not to hold that against him. Mr. Glocer has been working at Reuters since 1993, rising in the ranks through its recent merger with Thomson. The combined company is now one of the largest of its kind, selling all sorts of information about the financial, legal, tax and accounting, scientific, health-care and media markets. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Columbia University and a JD from Yale Law School.

Kara welcomes Tom Glocer to the D stage.

Kara recalls her first meeting with Glocer in London, which was supposed to concern news, but quickly evolved into a discussion of gadgets. Glocer is a gadget-freak and apparently has some programming background as well: As best I understand, Glocer developed a video game based on litigation’s discovery process while in school (sounds like a great candidate for EA’s next big hit). Someone eventually picked the game up and it’s now used in law schools.

On to the merger: Kara asks about the logic behind the deal. Glocer says the deal answers the question: How do I monetize my content in a world in which content is free? We’re living in a world in which, if you’re able to give people exactly the content they’re looking for, in exactly the format they require, they’ll actually pay you more for less of it. Obviously, this is a perfect model for financial information, Glocer says. But you really need to understand the needs of your customers.

As the quality of free services like those offered by Reuters improves, might the company lose its footing? Nope. Reuters has a great value proposition, says Glocer.

Who are your competitors? asks Kara. Glocer mentions the usual suspects: Bloomberg, etc., but notes that none of them encompass the same breadth of markets that Reuters does. Glocer explains that Reuters is essentially building content sets that can be consumed by humans–or machines.

Kara circles back to the merger. Isn’t this an awful time to double down in financial services? Nope, says Glocer. We really don’t think things are that bad. Look at Asia, he says, noting the growth in those countries’ financial markets. Emerging markets have long been one of Reuters’s strengths and continue to be.

How are citizen journalists impacting your news business? Reuters has massive operating costs; bloggers, obviously, do not. Glocer: We have one great advantage over bloggers: we write once, and sell many times to many different media outlets. He notes that Reuters already packages feeds for various news markets. Soon it hopes to package them for industries as well–lawyers, health-care workers, etc.

As newspapers cut back foreign bureaus, Glocer notes, business for news services like Reuters grows, because papers rely even more on its network of reporters worldwide. As a point of irony, he says, Reuters has grown as newspapers have shrunk: “We hope newspapers will hobble along for years to come,” he says.

How is news changing, asks Kara. Glocer says we’ll likely see more of a mix of commentary from high-talent sources, reporters and stringers, and citizen journalists. Glocer recalls the tsunami in Thailand, explaining that the day it occurred, Reuters had no photographers in the area. Reuters was forced to rely on citizen photographs.

Kara: Do you envision Reuters ever becoming the biggest distributor of user-generated content? Glocer finds the idea interesting, noting that there’s a lot to be said for using the Reuters brand to vouch for citizen bloggers.

Kara: What frightens you? The Googles of the world? Glocer says he’s not so much worried about a single company as he is about a structural change in the economies that create the need for the information Reuters provides.

Moving on to gadgets: Glocer is really liking his iPhone. Says he used to be a BlackBerry guy, but has ditched the device for Apple’s offering. He now carries two iPhones.

Who do you find to be the most important company in tech right now? Kara asks. Glocer: I guess it’s really hard to get away from Google. Who else has managed such winner-take-all success in such a short time?

And what about Yahoo and Microsoft: What’s going to happen? Glocer: I’m not one to give Jerry advice, but I do think the two companies need each other.

Question from the audience: Does the company plan any consumer acquisitions? Glocer says he likes to build things organically, but he’s not opposed to other acquisitions.

[This essay to attendees of the sixth D: All Things Digital conference is from the program book and is written by Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg; D6 starts tomorrow night.]

As it turns out, creating a start-up is kind of hard.

And, trying to be entrepreneurial 24/7 is definitely challenging.

And, attempting to drastically shift your paradigm and move into new arenas with even newer rules and lots of uncertainty? Let’s just say, we are very tired these days.

Still, it is safe to say that we are also flatly exhilarated, riveted by our work as never before and pretty much hooked.

But did we mention the really tired part?

In all seriousness, it has been just over a year since we and our hardy little team launched AllThingsD.com, our earnest effort to take the D conference we created six years ago and give it another life on the Web.

When we were designing D we had one idea in mind–to create the kind of conference we wished we could attend. It would have the best speakers, it would cover serious topics, it would treat its audience with respect and intelligence and it would offer content that was valuable and bracingly true.

As to pointless and insufferable panel creep and PowerPoint double-talk–we would banish them.

So in creating AllThingsD.com, our goal was to take the spirit of the D: All Things Digital conference itself, the amazing community and connections, the no-holds-barred style, the rich content and great writing, and add a key ingredient–a staunch commitment to accuracy, ethics, standards and a notion that online readers want quality tech news and analysis in a transparent and honest way.

We hope you think we are well on our way to achieving that. And we are excited by all the possibilities ahead for the site as we move into our second year of trying to take all the many virtues of mainstream media and marry them with the excitement and energy of the blogosphere.

To say we think a lot about change these days is an understatement.

And, in a way, although we tend to shy away from themes at D, the ever faster pace of change in the tech and media world has turned out to be one of the hallmarks of the speakers we have invited to share the stage with us, and their insights with you.

Beginning with Microsoft’s (MSFT) Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer, we could not have a better pair to talk about forcing dramatic change, even when running one of the most successful and enduring tech companies in the world.

From its bold and quite unsolicited offer to buy Yahoo (YHOO) this year, to its efforts to transform its core software business, to the symbolic passing of the torch as Mr. Gates moves away from his day-to-day role at the company in July, Microsoft’s leaders have sought out change aggressively.

So, too, have our other speakers.

Michael Dell is trying to reinvent Dell (DELL) again, even though it was his company that reinvented the computer business. Howard Stringer has been facing the same issues at Sony (SNE) in consumer electronics, while Time Warner’s (TWX) new CEO Jeff Bewkes has been handed a media giant he must shift even more dramatically into the digital age.

Amazon’s (AMZN) Jeff Bezos, one of the Internet’s true visionaries, is at it again this year, trying to make the dream of an e-book a mainstream reality.

And Barry Diller of IAC (IACI)? As usual, he has been right in the middle of a brawl about what direction the interactive company should take.

Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook has, of course, been the youthful face of change, bursting on the scene with his upstart social-networking site and upending all the apple carts in Silicon Valley as the leader of the Web 2.0 army. In this fight, he has recently been joined by former Google (GOOG) exec Sheryl Sandberg, who knows a thing or two about disruption.

Tom Glocer of Thomson Reuters (TRI) must take a global information powerhouse and make it even more digital, as challengers pop up everywhere. And Tom Rogers of TiVo (TIVO) is seeking to take the groundbreaking concepts the digital video-recording company pioneered and make a lasting business out of it.

Bobby Kotick of Activision (ATVI) has merged his offline game company, whose “Guitar Hero” is one of the mightiest brands in the sector, with one of the most powerful online multi-player games makers.

And Lowell McAdam of Verizon (VZ) has been trying to react to the sweeping shifts in how wireless technologies are delivered to consumers, as true change finally comes to the cellphone industry.

Nathan Myhrvold, former research guru at Microsoft, has always been about figuring out what’s behind the next corner, while FCC Chairman Kevin Martin has to puzzle over what role the government has to play in this fast-moving space.

And Melinda Gates is changing the world, which is a pretty big job.

And, of all the many luminaries we have on stage at D6, probably no one has had a more eventful year than Yahoo co-founder and CEO Jerry Yang. From suddenly taking over the reins at the company he launched while a student at Stanford University, to having a tough year of trying to revive Yahoo, to coping with an unsolicited takeover bid from Microsoft, Mr. Yang has had the ride of his life. He will appear with Yahoo president Sue Decker, who has become the No. 2 exec at the company, and has been charged with carrying out Mr. Yang’s vision amid much turmoil.

Finally, the long and storied career of News Corp.’s (NWS) Rupert Murdoch has been all about constant transformation. It is also not an understatement to say that the new owner of Dow Jones (and also AllThingsD.com and this conference too) is probably one of the most game-changing business leaders around.

And we hope to be equally disruptive in quizzing him and all the speakers about what it all means. Even the demos we picked will display the same forward-leaning and game-changing ideas all our speakers represent.

So, hold onto your seats for D6, as it’s going to be a bouncy ride.

And, as it turns out after our first full year as Web entrepreneurs, we would not have it any other way.

Except, of course, it would have been nice to get a little more sleep.

Find out what’s happening at D6 by reviewing these posts and video clips that will be posted live during the conference this week.

The annual gathering of tech and media luminaries was created and is run by my partner Walt Mossberg and me.

D6 tech and media speakers include: Microsoft Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft (MSFT); News Corp.’s (NWS) Rupert Murdoch; Jeff Bewkes of Time Warner (TWX); Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook; Michael Dell of Dell Computer (DELL); IAC’s (IACI) Barry Diller; Amazon’s (AMZN) Jeff Bezos; Howard Stringer of Sony (SNE); and TiVo’s (TIVO) Tom Rogers.

Also: Tom Glocer of Thomson Reuters (TRI); Melinda Gates of the Gates Foundation; FCC Chairman Kevin Martin; Lowell McAdam of Verizon Wireless (VZ); Activision’s (ATVI) Robert Kotick; and former Microsoft tech guru Nathan Myhrvold of Intellectual Ventures.

Just recently, we added Jerry Yang, CEO and co-founder of Yahoo (YHOO), and now he is being joined onstage at the conference by Yahoo President Sue Decker (pictured here in a lovely Wall Street Journal dot-drawing).

The pairing should make for a lively session, given all the heat around Yahoo of late, largely related to the scuttled attempt by Microsoft to buy the company.

What would you like to know about that and anything else about Yahoo?

As it so happens, you can ask!

While the conference is sold out, you can submit questions that you would like answered to Yang and Decker or any of the speakers via text or video. Walt and I will pick the best ones and let loose.

Ask early and often here!

In addition, the whole conference will be online at AllThingsD during the conference, via live blogs and reports of breaking news (and there will be breaking news, as there always is), along with video highlights.

And videos of all the interviews will be posted soon after it is over.

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer of Microsoft (MSFT). News Corp.’s (NWS) Rupert Murdoch. Jeff Bewkes of Time Warner (TWX). Yahoo’s (YHOO) Jerry Yang.

All of them engaged in roiling Internet deal-making of late and all of them in just three weeks on the same stage–but not, thankfully, at the same time, or we’d need a professional negotiator–at the 6th D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, Calif.

The annual gathering of tech and media luminaries was created and is run by my amazing partner Walt Mossberg and me (see us here at D5) and will take place May 27 to 29.

The conference, as we describe it on our Web site, is “unlike any other executive conference.” What we mean by that is that we try to determine the next direction of the digital revolution via unscripted and informal, but pointed, conversations about the impact of digital technology with industry leaders.

In other words, Walt and I needling at the major players of the digital sector, until they give up the good stuff.

The other digital and media leaders coming? That would be: Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook; Michael Dell of Dell Computer (DELL); IAC’s (IACI) Barry Diller; Amazon’s (AMZN) Jeff Bezos; Howard Stringer of Sony (SNE); and TiVo’s (TIVO) Tom Rogers.

Also: Tom Glocer of Thomson Reuters (TRI); Melinda Gates of the Gates Foundation; FCC Chairman Kevin Martin; Lowell McAdam of Verizon Wireless (VZ); Activision’s (ATVI) Robert Kotick; and former Microsoft tech guru and Nathan Myhrvold of Intellectual Ventures.

To say our timing is impeccably planned would be undeserved–we had no idea so much news related to all these companies and their leaders would break out, from the tough economy to takeover battles to court face-offs to mergers to trying to create a whole new way of reading.

Also, there will be some–as yet under wraps–amazing demos onstage too.

While the analog conference has been sold out for many months, the action will be on the AllThingsD.com site throughout the conference with round-the-clock live blogging by Digital Daily’s John Paczkowski, as well as video highlights from stage.

In addition, we’ll be pointing all over the Web to important tech and media news that breaks at D6.

And we will also stream the entire conference in the weeks after the conference takes place, so ATD‘s audience can experience the whole thing, even if they cannot all attend.

But anyone’s questions can be there, though–this year, you can submit questions to any of the speakers via text or video that you would like answered. Walt and I will pick the best ones and let loose. Ask early and often here!

Walt and I are very excited for D6, even after last year, when we brought together industry legends Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Jobs, for an historic joint interview.

At the time, Walt and I joked that we would not be able to top that amazing event (the video of the entire interview is below).

That interview was nearly unbeatable, but we also think that with the top-level interviewees we have assembled for D6, that it is game on.

Until then, here’s the Gates/Jobs video from D5:

With the deal for News Corp. to buy Dow Jones (owner of this site) for $5 billion struck late yesterday, it’s a sure thing that Reuters Group CEO Tom Glocer is probably happy he has his merger with Thomson Corp. almost done, especially as the race to provide digital news of all kinds–especially financial–just got kicked up a notch or two.

Indeed, the future of the digital news business is entering a new phase with the two deals. Reuters agreed to be acquired earlier this year by Thomson for a little over $17 billion.

So I went to see Glocer in London to talk to him about what the merger means and also what new trends will be key. Glocer turned out to be a closet geek, a blogger and an unusually wide-ranging thinker on digital topics (especially for an ex-lawyer!).

In the video, he discussed trends like social networking, the continued importance of brands online and the future of Thomson-Reuters, which he said he hoped would become the “media company of the 21st century.”

Here’s the video, along with a short tour of Reuters’ HQ in the Canary Wharf section of London:

[ See post to watch video ]

The combination of the second and third largest makers and distributors of financial information, news and other data (Bloomberg is No. 1) makes it a key player in the space. Besides news and photos, the company is a critical one in supplying banks, brokerage firms and investment firms with data, prices and other tools.

Being first and fastest with the right technical tools is going to be key for Glocer and Thomson-Reuters going forward, as it faces strong rivals and an ever-more demanding customer base, both in the free and premium online markets.

BoomTown has left our sojourn in Ireland with Walt Mossberg in our ongoing quest to create EuroD and has arrived in London.

For some reason, though, we have still not gotten our invite to Buckingham Palace to discuss the wireless access and show off the iPhone to the royals.

Nonetheless, we press ahead and will be out and about through Monday to see a little of what’s cooking in the digital space here.

London and all of England are quite the users of online technologies–for example, London itself just became the top geographic network on Facebook, with 810,000 sign-ups.

While here, I will be meeting with Reuters head Tom Glocer; Yahoo’s new Europe honcho, Toby Coppel; the people behind the Bebo social network (the service is very popular in the United Kingdom); Index Ventures’ Danny Rimer; and a few cool start-ups. A planned meeting with the Joost folks got canceled sadly, but somehow I will recover.

Look for my tech travel posts and videos in the days ahead and, until then, try to identify this quote and from where from a famous Englishman, and which seems particularly apt for the entrepreneurs of tech:

“Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.”
