<p>While BoomTown was running around the endless floors of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, I jogged right over to the folks at Nike, to see their new Nike+ SportWatch GPS.</p>
<p>The device is yet another step in Nike&#8217;s long march to try to digitize the running experience.</p>
<p>Nike put sweat into its digital efforts in 2006 with its wireless in-shoe sensor, which communicates with an Apple iPod.</p>
<p>Since then, it has moved on to its popular iPhone and iPod app, as well as an earlier watch called the Nike+ SportBand.</p>
<p>Now, in partnership with TomTom, it is upping the game with the new watch, which sends even more information back to the app and also its Nike+ Web site.</p>
<p>Nike is hoping to turn that destination, which has about four million members now, into a kind of inspirational social experience for runners of all levels.</p>
<p>The watch is part of that, of course, chronicling geo-location information and also a wide range of performance stats, such as time, pace, distance and calories.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s my video interview with Stefan Olander, VP of Digital Sport at Nike in which we talk about it all:</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>OpenStreetMap, a sort of Wikipedia of online maps assembled with contributions from thousands of globe-trotting volunteers, has gotten the attention of two big Internet players: Microsoft Corp. and AOL Inc.<br />
The companies recently invested money and contributed aerial imagery to help OpenStreetMap forge new ground. They see the project as a potential alternative or complement to expensive digital maps built by commercial vendors like Nokia Corp.&#8217;s Navteq and TomTom International BV&#8217;s Tele Atlas, which license data to Microsoft, AOL, Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc. for all or parts of their online maps.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>What do you do when you&#8217;ve just stepped out on a limb and released a new class of computer that you&#8217;re calling both magical and amazing but that runs on software designed over three years ago for entirely different hardware? </p>
<p>If you are Apple (AAPL), you sound the trumpets and assemble the techie press at your Cupertino HQ as soon as possible to preview the new operating system you hope will bring even more powerful magic to your latest creation. </p>
<p>As soon as possible was this morning, and <strong>AllThingsD</strong>&#8216;s Drake Martinet was there to liveblog the event, which announced, among other things, iPad sales of more than 450,000, a new app-based mobile advertising platform, and long-awaited multitasking functionality for the iPhone operating system. The liveblog is below.</p>
<p></p>
<p><strong>9:11 am</strong>: We&#8217;ve arrived at Apple&#8217;s Town Hall at Cupertino HQ. The electricity John Paczkowski described in his liveblog from the iPad event is missing today.</p>
<p><strong>9:57 am</strong>: Just walked in. Room is pretty full. Empty stage, with the standard Apple setup: Apple logo backdrop for the slideshow. Music a la an iPod commercial playing in the auditorium.</p>
<p><strong>10:00 am</strong>: Voice on the loudspeakers: &#8220;Please turn your electronic devices to silent, we are about to begin.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:03 am</strong>: Steve Jobs takes the stage and gets down to it. &#8220;The next generation of the most advanced mobile operating system in the world.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:04 am</strong>: Jobs opens with a quote from Walt Mossberg&#8217;s review. Says he will get to OS 4, but first, shares some iPad numbers. As of today, he says, Apple has sold 450,000 iPads, 300,000 on the first day. Over 600,000 iBooks downloaded as of today. And I Pad apps? Jobs says that 3.5 million have been downloaded so far.</p>
<p><strong>10:06 am</strong>: Jobs says, &#8220;When you create something, you really have butterflies when you create things and put them out into the world. We are feeling really good about this.&#8221;</p>
<p>He then moves on to the App Store. Users have downloaded 4.5 billion apps as of today. Jobs is now showcasing some screenshots of apps.</p>
<p><strong>10:09 am</strong>: Jobs is running through media apps.<br />
Now, he&#8217;s getting to the iPhone.</p>
<p><strong>10:10 am</strong>: Says Apple has just won its third J.D. Power award for the iphone. </p>
<p>&#8220;What is the real measure of usage? iPhone has a 64 percent browser share; everyone else together is half of the iPhone,&#8221; says Jobs.</p>
<p>85 million iPhones and iPod touches sold to date.</p>
<p><strong>10:12 am</strong>: Now the subject is iPhone OS 4.</p>
<p>Developers can now access the calender, photo library, SMS, full map overlays. In total, they will have access to 1500 APIs. There are over 100 new user features.</p>
<p><strong>10:13 am</strong>: Users will be able to change home screen wallpaper, use a spell checker, tap to focus video, create playlists.</p>
<p><strong>10:14 am</strong>: Jobs says there will be multitasking. </p>
<p>&#8220;We weren&#8217;t the first to this party, but we will be the best,&#8221; he says, with a nod to Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android.</p>
<p><strong>10:15 am</strong>: Jobs demos multitasking. No exposed interface. The active window lifts vertically and a slider of all the apps running appears.</p>
<p><strong>10:17 am</strong>: Jobs shows that multitasking takes you back to the exact place in the app where you were when you left, including games. </p>
<p>&#8220;That, is our multitasking UI. We&#8217;ve been using it a lot and it really changes the way you use the iPhone.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:19 am</strong>: Jobs leaves and Scott Forstall, Senior VP of Software, takes the stage. </p>
<p>He&#8217;s here to talk about the nitty-gritty.  </p>
<p>Seven mutlitasking services will be available to developers.</p>
<p>First: Background audio.</p>
<p><strong>10:21 am</strong>: Forstall introduces Tim Westergren, founder of Pandora, who is talking about how his streaming radio service will make use of background audio. </p>
<p>Basically, users will now be able to use Pandora or other background audio apps just as they can use the iPod function.  </p>
<p>He showcases how users will be able to buy songs from iTunes while Pandora is still playing the song.</p>
<p><strong>10:24 am</strong>: Forstall retakes the stage. </p>
<p>&#8220;Next service is VoIP,&#8221; he says. </p>
<p>&#8220;Now, when you&#8217;re on the iPhone, you can run Skype in the background.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:26 am</strong>: David Ponsford of Skype comes onstage.</p>
<p>Skype now can run in the background and receive calls when you are using other apps. </p>
<p>He switches to Yelp while still in Skype call.</p>
<p><strong>10:28 am</strong>: Forstall back now; he says the next major change is background location data. </p>
<p>He uses TomTom as an example. TomTom can be getting location data while you are listening music. </p>
<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s another class of application that wants to use your location all the time, but isn&#8217;t used while you are plugged in.&#8221; </p>
<p>The new OS will use less accurate cell towers (which uses less power) when doing background location features in social networking apps. </p>
<p>There will be a new icon on the taskbar showing that there are background apps currently using their locations.</p>
<p><strong>10:32 am</strong>: Next feature up: Push notifications. </p>
<p>Now there will be &#8220;local notifications.&#8221; These will come from the apps themselves, rather than from outside servers.</p>
<p><strong>10:33 am</strong>: Now talking about task completion.</p>
<p>Forstall says task completion will allow apps to complete tasks, like photo uploads, in the background. </p>
<p>He finishes with &#8220;fast app switching.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The app moves into a quiescent state in the background and uses no CPU power.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:34 am</strong>: Jobs retakes the stage to talk about the next major push. </p>
<p>Says there will be App folders.</p>
<p><strong>10:35 am</strong>: &#8220;We came up with a really beautiful implementation of folders.&#8221; </p>
<p>The process of creating folders seems pretty easy. Just drag apps on top of each other and a folder is created. </p>
<p>Folders can then be dragged around like apps.</p>
<p><strong>10:37 am</strong>: Jobs now shows us what the wallpaper selection function looks like. Feels like a mix of iPad and OS X.</p>
<p>His wallpaper now matches his pants. </p>
<p>Now, with folders, uses could store over 5,000 apps on their phones.</p>
<p><strong>10:39 am</strong>: Jobs moves on to the next new feature, the unified inbox.</p>
<p>Multiple accounts feeding to one mail inbox.</p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve also added the ability to organize by thread, so you can follow conversations much easier.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;And, open attachments. Now you can download an attachment and open it with an app from the App Store.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:41 am</strong>: Number four is iBooks. Jobs says Apple is adding iBooks to the iPhone, just like the iPad. </p>
<p>&#8220;Its a delightful e-book reader, and you can buy the books once and read them anywhere.&#8221;</p>
<p>They will wirelessly synch your current page between devices. </p>
<p>Also, free Winnie the Pooh, just as on the iPad.</p>
<p><strong>10:43 am</strong>: Forstall retakes the stage to talk about enterprise.</p>
<p><strong>10:43 am</strong>: The new OS allows encryption of email and data inside apps. </p>
<p>OS 4 will allow for mobile device management. </p>
<p>Also big for enterprise: Wireless app distribution. &#8220;A company can wirelessly distribute apps from its own servers to iPhones anywhere in the world. </p>
<p>Also adding SSL VPN from both Cisco (CSCO) and Juniper Networks (JNPR).</p>
<p><strong>10:45 am</strong>: Now talking about something called, &#8220;Game Center.&#8221; This is the gaming push analysts were predicting. </p>
<p>OS 4 will have a social gaming portal that allows friends to invite you to play games, or will match make you with opponents.</p>
<p><strong>10:47 am</strong>:  Jobs retakes the stage. &#8220;It&#8217;s called iAd.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:47 am</strong>: &#8220;There are lots of apps in the App Store for free.&#8221; </p>
<p>&#8220;Developers are starting to put ads into apps, but we think most of these really suck.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jobs says, &#8220;On desktops, search is where its at. That hasn&#8217;t happened on mobile. On mobile, apps are where it&#8217;s at.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:49 am</strong>: &#8220;This is a pretty serious opportunity, says Jobs. </p>
<p>He says this could open over one billion impressions per day. </p>
<p>&#8220;What we want to do with iAds, we want to deliver interactivity and emotion.&#8221; </p>
<p>The ads keep you in your app, versus getting &#8220;yanked out of your app&#8221; like before. </p>
<p>&#8220;Because iAd is in the OS itself, we have figured out how to deliver that ad.&#8221;</p>
<p>Apple will sell and distribute the ads.</p>
<p>Apple will give developers 60 percent of iAd revenue.</p>
<p><strong>10:53 am</strong>: Jobs demos ads, starts with a &#8220;Toy Story 3&#8243; ad. Says he&#8217;s seen the movie, which comes out in June. Crowd laughs. </p>
<p>He adds that, &#8220;it&#8217;s all done in HTML5, by the way.&#8221; More laughter at his point because the audience is well aware that Jobs is not a fan of Adobe&#8217;s (ADBE) Flash.</p>
<p><strong>10:55 am</strong>: The ad Jobs is showing is really more like a mini app, with streaming video, interactivity, a game, posters, background wallpapers and ability to buy app right from the iAd. </p>
<p>&#8220;Users like free stuff.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Have you ever seen an ad like this? Anything even close?&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>10:57 am</strong>: Next up, Jobs shows an ad for Nike, reiterating that these ads were created by Apple &#8220;just because we really like these brands.&#8221;</p>
<p>He showcases how iAds have access to location and the accelerometer. No word on whether that location data the iAd gets is user-selectable.</p>
<p><strong>11:00 am</strong>: &#8220;iAd is built into the OS, and the developer will get the majority of the revenue.&#8221; </p>
<p>Jobs goes into review mode.</p>
<p><strong>11:01 am</strong>: A developer preview will be released today. </p>
<p>Jobs says Apple will release the new OS in summer. </p>
<p>OS 4 will be for 3GS and third-gen iPod touch. </p>
<p>Older devices will get some upgrades, but hardware won&#8217;t allow all features like multitasking.  </p>
<p>OS 4 wont make it to the iPad till the fall.</p>
<p><strong>11:04 am</strong>: Jobs thanks everyone, and leaves the stage.<br />
Lights up, music back on, press starts milling.</p>
<p><strong>11:06 am</strong>: Takeaways: </p>
<p>There are obvious concerns about what multitasking will do to battery life, though Jobs emphasized that Apple has figured out a way to offer multitasking without using too much more battery. </p>
<p>Job&#8217;s didn&#8217;t get into specifics on how. </p>
<p>Forstall emphasized that implementing the new features was easy for developers, saying things like, &#8220;they added this [feature] in a single afternoon.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>11:09 am</strong>: Now Jobs, Forstall and Phil Schiller take the stage for a Q&#038;A. </p>
<p>There&#8217;s a question about multitasking using more AT&#038;T (T) data. Jobs says that it won&#8217;t be a big deal, adding that multitasking doesn&#8217;t up the amount of use. </p>

<p>Jobs: &#8220;We tried to buy a company named AdMob, but Google came in and snatched them from us. So we bought Quattro, and they are teaching us we are making ads that are different than anything I&#8217;ve ever seen.&#8221;</p>

<p><em>Google is moving into your market.</em></p>
<p>For tech companies, few words are more frightening, and yesterday we saw why. The mere announcement of <a href="http://www.google.com/mobile/navigation/index.html#p=default">Google Maps Navigation</a> sent shares of established GPS device makers like Garmin (GRMN) and TomTom into an ugly downward spiral.</p>
<p>Shares of Garmin lost 16 percent of their value and shares of TomTom plummeted more than 20 percent to a new 52-week low. This, despite the fact that Google’s (GOOG) new turn-by-turn mapping service is currently only available for Android 2.0 smart phones like <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091028/droid-follo/">the Droid from Motorola</a> (MOT).</p>
<p>Clearly, investors already see where this is headed. Who will pay for a Garmin or TomTom unit when they’ve got an Internet-connected smart phone that offers turn-by-turn voice guidance for free? It might be a bit slow coming out of the gate given the current paucity of Android-based smart phones, but once more handsets arrive at market, Google Maps Navigation will undoubtedly have a significant impact on sales of dedicated GPS units.</p>
<p>And if Google brings the service to Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, <a href="http://www.mercurynews.com/business-headlines/ci_13654403">as the company hopes to</a>, it’s going to be even worse.</p>
<p>&#8220;With this product, Google injects itself into a new market and has the potential to cause serious pain for the existing players, like Garmin and TomTom, while giving potential customers one more solid reason to switch to a Google-powered phone,&#8221; <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9140055/Google_drives_into_new_market_with_Maps_Navigation_beta_for_Android?taxonomyId=77">said Gabriel Consulting Group analyst Dan Olds</a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s a lot easier to justify the switch to a new device if it takes the place of two devices, like a phone and a navigation device, and if it does the job better.&#8221;</p>

<p>Among its many features, Apple&#8217;s iPhone is equipped with GPS and includes manual, written driving directions built into its standard Maps application. But that function doesn&#8217;t automatically bring up each turn sequentially, and it lacks voice prompts.</p>
<p>Now, a number of companies have launched, or will soon launch, iPhone apps that do offer voice-prompted, automated, turn-by-turn navigation. Of course, many other cellphones have long offered such services. But the iPhone&#8217;s large screen, decent mono speaker and large selection of car mounting kits make it a tempting navigation device.</p>

<p>I&#8217;ve been testing four such apps: from TomTom, Navigon, AT&#038;T (T) and Fullpower. The last, called MotionX GPS Drive, isn&#8217;t available in Apple&#8217;s app store as I write this. In the case of the Navigon MobileNavigator, which is already available, I tested an updated version expected to hit the store shortly.</p>

TomTom’s iPhone app</div>
<p>One big downside: Because Apple doesn&#8217;t allow third-party iPhone apps to run simultaneously with the device&#8217;s core functions, any incoming or outgoing phone call will interrupt all these apps during routing. When the call is over, the apps will automatically resume and continue your route. And none of these apps work on the original iPhone, only the 3G and 3GS.</p>
<p>Some of the apps take up a large amount of space on your iPhone, because they store all their maps locally. Others are much slimmer, because they download the apps on the fly, but these require you to have good cellular or Wi-Fi coverage at least at the start of a navigation session.</p>
<p>In my tests, on both local streets and highways, all four apps ate up big chunks of the iPhone&#8217;s battery life. So, I recommend that you employ a car charger when running them. Also, they all work much better and more safely if you use a windshield or dashboard mount.</p>
<p>None of the apps stood out as much better than the others at navigation, though they have different styles and features. All include the usual lists of local businesses and other points of interest.</p>
<p><strong>TomTom:</strong> The U.S. and Canada navigation app costs $100 and takes up a whopping 1.2 gigabytes of space on your phone. But there is no subscription fee and the maps are always present. Like a stand-alone navigation device, it uses big icons and lettering in its menus. It worked OK in my tests, except that it took a little longer than the others to acquire a GPS satellite signal to accurately situate itself. TomTom&#8217;s app doesn&#8217;t have live traffic information, doesn&#8217;t provide a text summary of your planned route, doesn&#8217;t announce street names and doesn&#8217;t integrate control of the iPhone&#8217;s music player.</p>
<p>Like all of its rivals, TomTom can fetch destinations from addresses in your iPhone contact list. But it didn&#8217;t understand a typical Washington, D.C., street name, such as &#8220;11th St., NE.&#8221; TomTom plans an extra-cost mounting kit that includes a better speaker, a power plug and a GPS receiver more potent than the iPhone&#8217;s.</p>
<p><strong>Navigon MobileNavigator:</strong> This app costs $90, and it takes up 1.3 GB on the iPhone because it also stores all the maps. There is no recurring fee. I thought Navigon had the cleanest interface and the best 3D map view, including representations of some highway-exit and speed-limit signs. It also barks the word &#8220;caution&#8221; when you are speeding. </p>
<p>But the Navigon voice was the least distinct, and while it generally did OK, it thought my D.C. test address was a bridge. It also lacks a route summary and live-traffic reports, though the update I tested now announces street names and integrates music control.</p>
<p><strong>MotionX-GPS Drive:</strong> Of all the apps, this one looks and works most like a typical iPod app, and least like a navigation program ported from another device. Its main screen has a clever menu arranged in a circle. It&#8217;s also fairly small—just 10 megabytes or so. But it must download maps and other info each time you start a route. This also allows it to update the information on the fly. Drive also is potentially the cheapest of the four apps I tested. It will cost $1.99 and include a 30-day free trial. After that, it&#8217;s $25 a year. </p>
<p>This app worked well in my tests, and is packed with features, including live traffic, a  route summary, and integrated music control. It understood my D.C. test address, but it doesn&#8217;t announce street names, and its function buttons are very small and labeled with tiny type.</p>
<p><strong>AT&#038;T Navigator:</strong> The iPhone version of this existing service, like Drive, downloads maps and info on the fly, but it takes up even less space on the phone—just 2.3 megabytes. That means you need a good connection at the start of a trip. It worked OK for me. Its interface is clean, and it has a route summary, live traffic and announcement of street names. It also understood my D.C. test address. And it synchronizes saved addresses with a Web site. But it is potentially the priciest. The app itself is free but usage costs $10 a month.</p>
<p>None of these apps is perfect, but each adds a new dimension to the iPhone.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>TomTom’s new app for Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone is getting attention for its high price tag of $99.99 but is garnering a positive first impression in the gadget blogosphere.</p>
<p>The app offers many of the features offered in its standalone GPS devices, including navigation help, trip-planning tools and multi-language support. “True, it’s not the first app offering turn-by-turn driving instructions for the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS&#8211;but it is from TomTom, an industry heavyweight that is finally delivering on years of rumor and speculation,” Thomas Ricker of Engadget writes.</p>
<p>On Silicon Alley Insider, Dan Frommer calls it “the $100 iPhone app you might actually buy,” adding, &#8220;Assuming you use it for more than 10 months, the one-time fee will end up being a better purchase than other similar apps, which run as $10 per month subscriptions.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Many people are heading into this year&#8217;s holiday season with tighter budgets, prompting them to be even more selective with their gift buying. One way to make sure you&#8217;re getting the most for your dollar is to search the Web for product reviews. These reviews, usually consisting of ratings systems and comment sections, might give the finicky shopper a helpful glimpse into a real user&#8217;s experience with a product.</p>

<p>But reviews don&#8217;t always identify their authors&#8217; true motives. One item might be reviewed by a satisfied customer who bought the product, or it could be from someone who designed the product and wants to see it succeed. A review could even be from a manufacturer&#8217;s disgruntled employee who wants to see the product fail. Blogs can perpetuate such biased behavior by inviting people to submit reviews without verifying whether or not the members ever used the product.</p>
<p>This week, I tested <a href="http://Buzzillions.com" rel="external">Buzzillions.com</a>, a free Web site owned by San Francisco-based PowerReviews Inc. that mainly posts reviews from people who have verifiably purchased the product they are appraising, according to retailers&#8217; records. It also organizes reviews in specific categories, allowing users to search according to how they categorize themselves.</p>
<p>For example, someone shopping for sheets can label herself a budget, midrange or high-end shopper. A guy looking for a videogame console could call himself a gaming novice, casual gamer, frequent player or hard-core gamer. And someone on the hunt for the right shampoo could call herself a minimalist, beauty conscious or a product junkie. Selecting one of these profile labels whittles reviews down to only those best suited for the personality of the person buying the product &#8212; or perhaps receiving it as a gift.</p>
<p>The secret sauce behind Buzzillions is generated by surveys that over 300 retailers send to consumers. A few weeks after buying a product, consumers receive an email survey with a link to a Buzzillions questionnaire. These surveys ask consumers what they consider to be a product&#8217;s pros, cons and best uses, and its ranking according to the site&#8217;s best-out-of-five star rating system. And, following the Buzzillions formula, it asks these verified buyers to categorize themselves. Both verified users and unverified users, alike, can write reviews for the site, though verified users&#8217; reviews are more heavily considered in the &#8220;Buzzillions Rank&#8221; system.</p>
<p>The &#8220;Buzzillions Rank&#8221; shows a product&#8217;s standing in its particular category, based on an algorithm applied to the survey data. This formulated ranking is based on three things: a product&#8217;s star rating; the number of reviews it receives; and the reliability of its reviewers.</p>
<p>Though Buzzillions can&#8217;t prevent a person from posting multiple reviews on a product, it does search the site for duplicate content and users can notify the site if they doubt a review&#8217;s authenticity. This could trigger an investigation by the site that may involve tracking the Internet address of a reviewer, the times and frequency that a person posted reviews or even calling the person in question.</p>
<p>Buzzillions is particularly helpful when it comes to certain categories of reviews. The Electronics category, for example, is so populous that it must be divided into 17 subcategories with numerous smaller groups in each subcategory. This category can also be searched by brand.</p>
<p>But Buzzillions has its flaws. Not all products can be sorted with personality labels. And I found that some items were miscategorized. A &#8220;GPS&#8221; category included receivers, car navigation systems and wristwatches, but when I tried to narrow these products by selecting the &#8220;Automotive GPS&#8221; category, individual GPS data loggers and receivers still appeared instead of car-only devices like those from Garmin (GRMN) and TomTom. Buzzillions said it would correct this error, but products placed in the wrong categories could be highly confusing for someone unfamiliar with a product. Other categories, such as Shoes and Clothing, left me disappointed by the low number of represented brands and subcategories (i.e. shoes didn&#8217;t separate heels or flats from the pack).</p>
<p>Nothing is sold on Buzzillions.com itself, though the site does link to partner stores. But some product pages listed only one online store where the item could be bought. Buzzillions plans to fix this problem by listing about five to 10 online retailers per product.</p>
<p>People can use the site in two ways: as members, by signing up with an email and password and entering descriptions to create profiles of themselves and what types of products they like; or as unregistered visitors to the site. I tried both methods and found the member recommendations practical because they pointed out products I may not have found as quickly using searches. As a member, you instantly see a list of suggested products according to your profile as well as receive gift suggestions via email. And even using the site without becoming a member worked well, never making me feel like the best bits were only offered to registered members.</p>
<p>I really liked Buzzillions&#8217;&nbsp;&#8221;Review Snapshot,&#8221; a small at-a-glance box that lists pros, cons and best uses for a product. This snapshot also shows a product&#8217;s Buzzillions Rank, as well as its star ranking compared with the category&#8217;s star-ranking average. I saved a lot of time by skimming these concise snapshots rather than opening every review.</p>
<p>Buzzillions recently created a mobile version of its site, mobile.buzzillions.com, which runs on the iPhone&#8217;s Web browser and can be used for quick looks at reviews and top-10 lists. The company has plans to release an actual iPhone app that should be available soon via Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) App Store.</p>
<p>The more I used Buzzillions, the more I grew to depend on the site&#8217;s signature Buzzillions Rank, which is clearly listed on a big, bright-green badge. The top 10 products in each category are distinctly labeled, with the No. 1 item in a category getting a special ribbon. And this ranking held true to its formula and showed a product&#8217;s real standing: I often saw an item with a higher star-rating average receive a lower Buzzillions Rank because they had far fewer reviews compared with products with a higher Buzzillions Rank.</p>
<p>Another helpful stat that Buzzillions displays prominently with each review is the date that it was reviewed. I looked at a pair of tennis sneakers with a top-10 Buzzillions Rank, but some of that pair&#8217;s reviews were labeled with dates that were too old to be relevant for me. Electronics fans, of course, would care even more about these dates.</p>
<p>All told, Buzzillions does a good job of balancing reviews and culling the most-appropriate reviews for certain people based on personality traits. It currently has more than 3.6 million reviews, but will most likely continue to grow as more people use and rely on it, making it an even more valuable tool for shoppers.</p>

That&#8217;s the conclusion of Pablo Perez-Fernandez, an analyst at Global Crown Capital, in San Francisco. Perez-Fernandez picked up coverage of both companies this morning with an Underweight rating, asserting that both stocks could drop 20 percent or more over the next six months. He notes that the GPS device business is &#8220;under stress from competition, suffering a major slowdown and under the threat of the mighty smartphone.&#8221;</p>
<p>He contends there is a &#8220;strong likelihood&#8221; that both companies could miss their full year 2008 guidance given light PND unit shipments. &#8220;We see downside around the next two earnings calls,&#8221; he writes, with the fourth quarter posing particular risk.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>This week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the majority of attendees are doing their darndest to speak the geek language. &#8220;Geek,&#8221; though just a letter away from &#8220;Greek,&#8221; can be just as confusing to those who aren&#8217;t fluent speakers. Below, find a guide to terms and definitions used in some key technology categories. It will help you speak geek with the best of them, whether at CES or browsing products in your neighborhood electronics store.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Digital Cameras</h5>
<p><strong>Megapixels:</strong> This term describes the highest resolution photo a camera can take. Often mistaken as the most important factor in a digital camera, a high megapixel count &#8212; such as 10MP or more &#8212; isn&#8217;t necessary for the average user unless he or she plans on heavily editing or enlarging photos. Most new digicams offer between five and eight megapixels, which is usually more than enough.</p>
<p><strong>Optical or Digital Zoom:</strong> Optical zoom, determined by the physical movement of a lens, matters much more than digital zoom, which digitally alters an image using the camera&#8217;s internal computer. Camera companies still try to confuse potential buyers by listing a camera&#8217;s total zoom, or the optical and digital zooms multiplied together. Ignore total zoom numbers and instead focus on optical, which now averages around 5x for many new cameras.</p>
<p><strong>Image Stabilization:</strong> When generously sized LCD viewing screens started replacing optical viewfinders, they also forced users to hold their cameras at arm&#8217;s length, making for plenty of blurry photographs. To remedy this, camera manufacturers have added image stabilization, tools once found only in high-end SLR models. Optical (also called &#8220;mechanical&#8221;) and digital image stabilization correct for unsteady hands and moving subjects, respectively. Cameras with both types advertise dual image stabilization, which corrects for both situations and costs more.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Mobile Devices</h5>
<p><strong>HSDPA and EVDO:</strong> HSDPA, or High Speed Downlink Packet Access, is the name for <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=t'>AT&#038;T</a>&#8216;s 3G, or third generation, mobile network that operates at roughly the speed of a slower DSL in a home. HSDPA is available in most major metropolitan areas and is seen as the competitor to <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=vz'>Verizon</a> and Sprint&#8217;s EVDO (Evolution Data Only) networks, though the popular iPhone runs on AT&#038;T&#8217;s network using Wi-Fi and EDGE technology rather than HSDPA.</p>
<p><strong>Multi-Touch Technology:</strong> Most popularly found on Apple&#8217;s iPhone and iPod touch, multi-touch is starting to show up in other products, such as in <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=msft'>Microsoft</a>&#8216;s Surface, a coffee-table-like computer. Rather than just responding to on-screen touches, this technology enables moving, resizing and zooming pictures and Web pages using one or more fingers simultaneously. Look for many more devices &#8212; mobile and otherwise &#8212; to incorporate multi-touch in the future.</p>
<p><strong>GPS:</strong> Global Positioning Systems are most often found in cars &#8212; either built-in or on portable devices from companies like <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=GRMN'>Garmin</a> and TomTom. These gadgets use satellite technology to determine geographic location, and high-end models even display Web content like news and weather along with directions. GPS integration in mobile devices can be used to plot routes in cars, can help users find nearby businesses while on the go and can link friends by showing one where the other is located and what they&#8217;re doing.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Digital Music</h5>
<p><strong>DRM:</strong> Digital rights management is a set of standards that protect the intellectual property rights of online content like music and videos, preventing it from being illegally distributed across the Web. In the past year, <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=12777.fr'>Vivendi</a>&#8216;s Universal Music Group, Apple and (most recently) <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=sne'>Sony</a> BMG said they will start selling DRM-free versions of songs, often for a higher price. In Apple&#8217;s iTunes store, these files are called &#8220;iTunes Plus&#8221; and aren&#8217;t restricted like other iTunes content.</p>
<p><strong>MP3:</strong> MP3 files are open, without any DRM restrictions. Files that you rip (copy) from your own CDs are usually converted into MP3s, though iTunes users can automatically rip tracks into that program&#8217;s special format, called AAC. MP3 files can be uploaded to social-networking sites for sharing with friends and online communities.</p>
<p class="answer"> These file types are protected by rights that tie them to specific players. Generally, AAC files make up the majority of tracks sold on Apple&#8217;s iTunes store and play only on Apple&#8217;s iPods; WMA files are Microsoft&#8217;s version of proprietary files.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wi-Fi</h5>
<p>The popularity of Wireless Fidelity, or Wi-Fi, brings this technology to more and more portable devices like the iPod Touch and Microsoft Zune and gives companies good reason to incorporate Wi-Fi receivers in new computers &#8212; laptops and desktops alike. While available in many flavors, different letters like b, g, a and n stand behind Wi-Fi&#8217;s more technical name, 802.11, to help discern one version from another according to characteristics like speed and compatibility. The latest version, &#8220;n,&#8221; offers the greatest range and speed, and &#8220;n&#8221; devices are usually compatible with earlier versions.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Televisions</h5>
<p><strong>HDTV:</strong> High-definition television has now become the standard, capable of displaying vastly better pictures, provided the source is also HD. Today&#8217;s more popular flat panel HD televisions are LCDs, or liquid crystal displays, though plasmas still hold their own. Recording HD content can&#8217;t be done with a regular digital video recorder; instead, a special HD recorder is required to capture this higher quality content.</p>
<p><strong>480p vs. 1080i vs. 720p vs. 1080p:</strong> These numbers refer to the resolution, or sharpness, of a digital display, while &#8220;p&#8221; stands for progressive and &#8220;i&#8221; stands for interlaced. A resolution of 480p, known as EDTV or Enhanced Definition TV, is found most often in low-end plasmas or LCD screens. A TV with a resolution of 1080p is currently considered the Holy Grail, and costs the most. But 1080p pictures usually can&#8217;t be distinguished from less expensive 1080i or 720p pictures by average viewers at the typical distances from which most folks watch TV.</p>
<p><strong>Blu-ray vs. HD DVD:</strong> Blu-ray and HD DVD are incompatible high-definition disc formats that continue to fight a seemingly endless battle to replace the DVD. The Blu-ray camp is led by <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=sne'>Sony</a> and the HD DVD camp is led by Toshiba. The two formats aren&#8217;t so different, technically speaking, but their very existence is confusing to consumers. The recent decision made by<a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=twx'> Time Warner</a>&#8216;s Warner Bros. to use Blu-ray gives Sony&#8217;s side a boost, and now <a href='http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&#038;symbol=via'>Viacom</a>&#8216;s Paramount is rumored to be switching to Blu-ray from HD DVD. Dual-format players from Samsung and LG offer some solace.</p>
