The company it is buying is called Varicent. Based in Toronto, Varicent specializes in using the power of computing to analyze and understand sales performance and compensation.</p>
<p>Varicent makes software that&#8217;s intended to automatically collect and analyze sales data not only from a company&#8217;s finance and sales operations, but also from its human resources and IT departments. The point &#8212; and if this doesn&#8217;t describe an IBM-like view of the world I don&#8217;t know what does &#8212; is to gain efficiencies, discover unknown trends and, as always, boost sales. </p>
<p>In more practical terms, it means, according to a note from Brian Marshall at ISI out this morning, that Varicent&#8217;s software makes it easier for companies to &#8220;optimize compensation, streamline territory assignments, manage quotas, analyze sales activities and prepare for audits.&#8221;</p>
<p>Founded in 2003, it had raised $35 million in venture capital from FTV Capital, RBC Venture Partners and Edgestone Capital. It has 180 customers including Hertz, Manpower, Office Depot and Starwood.</p>
<p>Marshall goes on to argue that IBM is the company best positioned to capitalize on the expected $10 billion business in analytics. Varicent would be its sixth recent deal in the space: Others include Algorithmics, Clarity Systems, OpenPages, Cognos and SPSS.</p>
<p>And while terms haven&#8217;t been disclosed, IBM, Marshall says, has indicated that the return on its software acquisitions has been better than it has been in several years. It also looks like Big Blue&#8217;s dealmaking it on a serious upswing: After spending about $6 billion on acquisitions in 2010 it cut back to only $2 billion in 2011. Marshall argues that IBM is going to be busy buying companies: &#8220;We expect continued activity this year and see IBM as among the best in large-cap technology at building high-value capabilities through acquisition.&#8221;</p>
<p>IBM shares fell by $1.09, or about a half percentage point, to $204.23 by 10 am ET. The shares are up almost 12 percent this year, and earlier this month hit a lifetime high of $210.69.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Fred Wilson wanted to watch the Knicks game on TV last night. But because of a <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/sports/msg-expected-to-leave-time-warner-systems.html?src=recg">cable company pissing match</a>, he couldn&#8217;t.</p>
<p>But here&#8217;s a <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/fredwilson/status/154007557084684288/photo/1/large">picture</a> of the Union Square Ventures partner watching the New York-Toronto game on his big screen, after all. He was able to get a feed of the game from a pirate aggregator called <a href="http://88.80.11.29/">atdhe</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/fredwilson/status/154011525798039554">he explained on Twitter</a>. &#8220;Worked great for me. #screwcable&#8221;</p>

<p>The fact that it&#8217;s easy to get pirated TV, delivered over the Internet, isn&#8217;t new. It&#8217;s certainly not a revelation for Wilson, one of tech&#8217;s most prominent and successful venture capitalists, or his <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/fredwilson">199,000 Twitter followers</a>.</p>
<p>Still, it&#8217;s always worth pointing out <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110727/fox-kicks-off-the-great-web-video-piracy-boom-of-2011/">just how easy it has become</a>. It&#8217;s particularly important when it comes to live sports, because that&#8217;s supposed to be the one thing that keeps everyone &#8212; or many people, at least &#8212; paying (<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/16/business/media/for-pay-tv-clients-a-steady-diet-of-sports.html?_r=1&amp;ref=business&amp;pagewanted=all">a lot</a>) for cable.</p>
<p>I&#8217;d be surprised if the Knicks game looked very good on Wilson&#8217;s Panasonic &#8212; when I tried it on my MacBook, it was pretty blurry.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s better than nothing, which is your only alternative if you&#8217;re a Time Warner Cable subscriber in New York City right now (the NBA&#8217;s <a href="http://www.nba.com/leaguepass/">League Pass</a> subscription service, which is supposed to give you access to every game in the league, has a regional blackout).</p>
<p>It&#8217;s also worth noting that while Wilson is directing his anger at the cable guys, who are easy and deserving targets, the <a href="http://fightonlinetheft.com/sites/default/files/file/12_14_11%20MI%20Letter_edit.pdf">NBA itself is a supporter of ProtectIP and SOPA</a>, which are designed to make sites like atdhe harder to search for on Google, Twitter, etc.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m quite sure that Wilson would say he&#8217;s not advocating piracy, but simply trying to access something he&#8217;s already paying for (or in other cases, <a href="http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2011/02/anatomy-of-a-pirate.html">grabbing something he isn&#8217;t allowed to buy</a> for unfathomable reasons).</p>
<p>Still, I can imagine a Big Media lobbyist using Wilson&#8217;s tweets (or, I suppose, this post) to help explain why the legislation should pass. And I&#8217;m certain <a href="http://www.avc.com/a_vc/2011/12/freedom-to-innovate.html">that&#8217;s not what Wilson was aiming for</a>.</p>

<p>So, <a href="http://vizualize.me/">Vizualize.me</a>, an infant company based in Toronto, is trying to dig through piles of personal data and reinvent the resume for our modern data-driven world.</p>
<p>Why this unenviable task?  </p>
<p>&#8220;People aren&#8217;t even really reading [resumes] anymore,&#8221; said Vizualize.me CEO and founder Eugene Woo. &#8220;They&#8217;ve gotten too long, and they just aren&#8217;t useful.&#8221; </p>
<p>In other words, resumes are due for a good shake-up. </p>
<p>Vizualize.me has built a Web app that ingests a user&#8217;s work history and then spits out a design-y timeline, with details about each experience layered in. </p>
<p>Data like this is often messy, so, rather than trying to get users to manually enter their work history, Vizualize.me just connects to LinkedIn, pulls out the already-structured data, and converts it into the visualization. </p>
<p>The end result is something between an About.me profile page and a project manager&#8217;s colorful Gantt chart. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s a neat concept to lay out collected work history on a single digital page. And the result isn&#8217;t bad-looking either, even if it has some of the roughness that is unavoidable in a bootstrapped beta release. </p>
<p>Still not sure what you might use it for? Apparently you&#8217;re in good company. </p>
<p>Woo isn’t sure, either. &#8220;We&#8217;ve gotten a lot of interest from recruiters who want to sift through many resumes quickly,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But most of our users want to use the visualization as part of their own resume.&#8221; </p>
<p>Although a business model seems a ways off, Vizualize.me will likely be able to grow its user base thanks to the Internet&#8217;s penchant for navel-gazing. </p>
<p>And gaze it does. To date, there are about 175,000 users in line for a beta invite. </p>
<p>But, like anything else that looks simple and elegant, creating robust visualizations of resume data is actually pretty hard, according to Woo. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s because they require precision, and users are sensitive to things like unseemly gaps in work history that might force them to talk about that ugly two-year addiction to World of Warcraft. </p>
<p>Woo also seems to have his work cut out for him technologically as well. He hopes to add many more visualization styles, or &#8220;themes,&#8221; to borrow a term from microblogging site Tumblr. But he says that themes for data visualizations are much harder than just making a Tumblr theme. </p>
<p>Said Woo: &#8220;Ours have to be coded to work and not just look good.&#8221;</p>
<p>Assuming the product improves, Vizualize.me, and data visualization products like it seem to have a pretty good growth potential.</p>
<p>Because one thing is clear, our piles of personal data aren&#8217;t getting any smaller. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s just a post on the popular <a href="http://www.deadline.com/2010/09/can-social-network-go-all-the-way/">entertainment blog &#8220;Deadline Hollywood.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>But it&#8217;s a clear indication the makers of the movie about the origins of Facebook are gunning for maximum attention and Oscar buzz with only a few weeks to go before its debut.</p>
<p>In fact, awards columnist Pete Hammond was pretty much channeling the marketing plan of Oscar-winning producer Scott Rudin for &#8220;The Social Network,&#8221; which has its premiere in New York on September 24 and its wide rollout on October 1.</p>
<p>Rudin&#8211;the volcano of a producer about whom I would like to see a biopic like the one he is sticking it to Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg with&#8211;has apparently been personally inviting every online chatterbox (not me!) and their mother to screenings of the film from the Sony (SNE) movie unit, Columbia Pictures, in recent weeks.</p>
<p>Writes Hammond:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>It&#8217;s a smart strategy but even without a personal invitation from one of the film&#8217;s producers this is already the current must-see movie on every Oscar watchers list. As an example of that, one blogger actually got on a plane from Toronto to New York just to see Social Network, then headed immediately back to Toronto. His subsequent review was a rave declaring it the one to beat for Best Picture (a little premature on that I think). That&#8217;s just one example of the praise now starting to hit the Internet from Hitfix to Slashfilm to Chud and all cyber points inbetween.</p></blockquote>
<p>A little premature perhaps, but it seems to have worked with Hammond:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>I saw it at the first opportunity on Monday and would have to say fairly objectively that The Social Network is Sony’s best shot at Best Picture in years, a lock for Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards. And most importantly, Oscar nominations in every major category including Director for David Fincher, Writing for Aaron Sorkin, lead actor for Jesse Eisenberg (playing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg), Supporting Actor for  both Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross&#8217;  score, editing and so on. It also looks like it will be a major box office hit, hitting a nerve with the young demographic that are on the front lines of moviegoers&#8230;</p>
<p>Despite its high-tech bones, what Fincher and Sorkin have managed to do is tell a time-honored very human story, a social document for a generation that has as much relevance now as movies like On The Waterfront, Network, All The President&#8217;s Men, and The Graduate did in their time.</p></blockquote>
<p>Expect more of the same from those who get sucked up into the marketing machine for &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; in the next weeks, even though it appears it will be devastating to the real-life version of its main subject, Mark Zuckerberg.</p>
<p>And really, really unfair, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20100913/the-social-network-is-just-as-brutal-as-mark-zuckerberg-feared">according to MediaMemo&#8217;s Peter Kafka</a>, by taking one aspect of his personality&#8211;awkward arrogance or perhaps arrogant awkwardness&#8211;and twisting it into a much deeper malevolence.</p>
<p>I have no doubt in my mind that Zuckerberg pulled an epic geek sandbagging on the clueless Winklevoss twins by promising to work on their goofy concept for a social networking site at Harvard University, then not doing so and working on his own ideas instead.</p>
<p>And, for sure, he had a painfully typical start-up falling-out with his own early partners.</p>
<p>But let&#8217;s get real here&#8211;they all got paid off plenty for being present at the creation of something they themselves <em>never</em> could have created.</p>
<p>Does anyone honestly believe the Winklevii were capable of making Facebook, or any reasonable facsimile, any more than Zuckerberg was capable of rowing in the Olympics?</p>
<p>While hitting some right notes about Zuckerberg&#8217;s mannerisms&#8211;conversations with him can be very perplexing&#8211;the Mark of &#8220;The Social Network&#8221; is largely fictional.</p>

<p>Certainly, he has some glaring faults (and so do I!).</p>
<p>But they are no worse that other tech leaders&#8217;, from Bill Gates of Microsoft (MSFT) to Steve Jobs of Apple (AAPL) to Silicon Valley&#8217;s own twins, Larry Page and Sergey Brin of Google (GOOG).</p>
<p>Interestingly, the night before what turned out to be a very <a href="http://d8.allthingsd.com/speakers/mark-zuckerberg/">difficult onstage interview</a> at the eighth <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference in June, at a dinner just south of Los Angeles, Zuckerberg fretted to me about the film.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s what a lot of people will think I am like, because it&#8217;s a movie and that has impact on their perceptions,&#8221; he said with a lot of concern in his voice.</p>
<p>I pooh-poohed his complaints and told him not to worry about it too much.</p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s <em>just</em> a movie,&#8221; I said. &#8220;No one believes what they see at the movies anymore.&#8221;</p>
<p>But as this film chugs along&#8211;gaining Oscar velocity right onto the stage of the Academy Awards at the Kodak Theatre at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard on February 27, 2011&#8211;I can now see Zuckerberg might have been right all along.</p>

This time, it was poor old folkie <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordon_Lightfoot">Gordon Lightfoot</a>, who, of course, is not dead, merely befuddled.</p>
<p>So are a lot of reports about the reports of his death, which pin the blame on Twitter. Or in the case of the New York Daily News, something called a <a href="http://www.nydailynews.com/gossip/2010/02/18/2010-02-18_gordon_lightfoot_canadian_folk_singer_victim_of_death_hoax_songwriter_is_alive_a.html">&#8220;Twitter blogging service.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>The original rumor that Lightfoot was dead may or may not have originated on Twitter&#8211;his road manager seems to think it was via <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/arts/gordon-lightfoot-very-much-alive/article1473102/">&#8220;a Twitter coming out of Ottawa.&#8221;</a> But that seems both very specific and hard to prove. If anyone can, please let me know.</p>
<p>But say it is true. Twitter still didn&#8217;t force Canwest, the <a href="http://www.canwestglobal.com/about/fact_sheet.asp">big Canadian media conglomerate</a>, to publish a wire report that said the singer was dead. As best I can tell, it was that story, which was picked up by various Canwest newspaper sites, that convinced people Lightfoot had croaked.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s <a href="http://www.canada.com/health/Singer+songwriter+Gordon+Lightfoot+dead/2582156/story.html">Canwest&#8217;s description</a> of what happened:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>After false rumours of Lightfoot&#8217;s death initially emerged online, Hawkins [musician <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronnie_Hawkins">Ronnie Hawkins</a>, a friend of Lightfoot] was contacted by a Canwest reporter. In that interview, Hawkins reported that Lightfoot was dead. Based on that information, Canwest News Service sent out an alert and short story on the wire which reported Lightfoot&#8217;s death. Within minutes, Canwest was contacted by a representative close to Lightfoot who said that news of his demise was untrue. That prompted another alert on the wire which said the previous story should be disregarded because there were conflicting accounts about Lightfoot&#8217;s health.</p>
<p>About 30 minutes later, Canwest spoke to Lightfoot&#8217;s tour manager, [Bernie] Fiedler, and immediately moved another story on the wire reporting the singer&#8217;s death was a hoax.</p></blockquote>
<p>In Twitter time, 30 minutes is forever, of course. And it was the first Canwest story and alert, which were indeed <a href="http://davidakin.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2010/2/18/4459652.html">distributed via Twitter</a>, that really fueled this thing. But blaming Twitter for quickly spreading a mainstream news organization&#8217;s story is a stretch.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s some pithy perspective from <a href="http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/opinions/columnists/doug-saunders/">Doug Saunders</a>, a Canadian journalist who doesn&#8217;t work for Canwest. It comes to us via <a href="http://twitter.com/DougSaunders">Twitter</a>, naturally:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>If a media snafu causes you to debate the role of Twitter, imagine it&#8217;s 90 years ago and instead of Twitter you&#8217;re saying &#8220;the telephone&#8230; Hearing some rumour and printing it as truth is unrelated to tech used to circulate that rumour. Same happened, faster, in 1780s.</p></blockquote>
<p>If you&#8217;re itching to confirm Lightfoot&#8217;s health yourself, you can listen to an <a href="http://www.680news.com/entertainment/article/28161--gordon-lightfoot-alive-and-well">impromptu interview the singer conducted</a> yesterday with a Toronto radio station. And I hope to see him make a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090630/jeff-goldblum-defies-the-web-denies-his-death-on-colbert-report/">Goldblumesque</a> appearance on &#8220;The Colbert Report&#8221; very soon.</p>

<p>Microsoft said it has been preparing modified versions of the affected programs that should be ready when the injunction goes into effect on Jan. 11, allowing sales to continue without interruption. The company also indicated the ruling shouldn&#8217;t affect its highly anticipated Office 2010 software, due out next year. It also doesn&#8217;t affect copies of Word that have already been sold.</p>
<p>The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Tuesday affirmed a ruling in a case brought by i4i Inc., a Toronto-based technology company that convinced a Texas jury last May that recent versions of Microsoft Word infringed a company software patent that deals with manipulating the architecture of a document.</p>

You may want to hurry up: Redmond will be barred from selling the software in the next two months&#8211;if the company isn&#8217;t able to overturn a Texas judge&#8217;s ruling.</p>
<p>Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas ordered a permanent injunction yesterday that will ostensibly prohibit Microsoft (MSFT) from selling Word within 60 days. It&#8217;s the result of a lawsuit filed by Toronto-based <a href="http://www.i4i.com/">i4i</a>, which claims that Microsoft violated a patent it owns regarding XML files. Microsoft is also supposed to hand over $290 million in damages.</p>
<p>There are more details from <a href="http://blog.seattlepi.com/microsoft/archives/176223.asp#FFSHARE-frameh-315">SeattlePi.com</a> (still <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090518/hearst-zombie-seattle-paper-doing-better-than-the-original/">extant</a>!) and <a href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20090811/2330285852.shtml">TechDirt</a>. But the most salient point here is that this is a ruling on a patent lawsuit filed in eastern Texas, which generally exists in its own orbit when it comes to patent lawsuits. So odds that this one will stick are awfully low.</p>
<p>Other equally important news: This footage of a guy in a wetsuit zipping down a giant water slide, up a wooden ramp and flying hundreds of feet through the air before landing in a kiddie pool is <em>not real</em>. It&#8217;s just a <a href="http://newteevee.com/2009/08/11/the-megawoosh-waterslide-viral-how-it-was-really-done/">viral ad</a> for Microsoft Germany.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s pretty cool.</p>

<p>Back on April 7, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090407/tim-armstrong-starts-at-aol-his-entire-100-day-countdown-to-magic-memo">Tim Armstrong sent a memo to the long-battered troops of AOL</a> about a 100-day vision quest the new CEO and chairman was going on to find out &#8220;how to bring back the magic of AOL.&#8221;</p>
<p>It is now Day 86, and Armstrong is closing in on the end of a Where&#8217;s-Waldo commitment that he made then to visit all of the far-flung offices of the Time Warner (TWX) online unit globally.</p>
<p>More importantly, as it is almost over, Armstrong also has to make good on another promise he made in that memo he sent to the staff on his first day:</p>
<p>&#8220;The culmination of the 100-day process will end in Dulles with an All-Hands meeting in mid-July. At that meeting, we’ll review the feedback we’ve received&#8211;both internal and external. We’ll also discuss our strategic direction for the coming years, and highlight areas that will bring AOL and AOL properties into the next decade of digital leadership. Most importantly, we will set a course and focus all of our resources to make that course a success.&#8221;</p>
<p>BoomTown is eager to see what Armstrong has found out on his trip and what path it will ultimately put AOL on.</p>
<p>So far, the broad outlines of his strategy seem to center on expanding AOL&#8217;s content assets, strengthening its advertising network and getting out of businesses the company cannot compete well in, such as social networking.</p>
<p>What other pearls of wisdom Armstrong has gleaned are to still to be revealed, presumably.</p>
<p>His corporate version of &#8220;The Amazing Race&#8221; is certainly a novel idea, born at his first all-hands meeting in Dulles, Va., which used to be the world-wide HQ of AOL and remains its heart.</p>

<p>There, Armstrong (pictured here) joked to the crowd:</p>
<p>“I know that work goes on across the globe and, in the first 90 days, I’m going to try to visit every office we have and sit down and talk to every employee and that will be something that my wife has actually agreed to let me do so.&#8221;</p>
<p>Thus, spouse-approved, the former Google (GOOG) exec has circumnavigated the globe and has held meeting with employees in a wide range of places: Dulles; New York; Baltimore; San Francisco; Mountain View, Calif.; Toronto, Lancaster, Pa.; Denver; Hamburg; London; Paris; Bangalore; Dublin and, this week, Tel Aviv.</p>
<p>But it has not been all tourism, in search of innovation.</p>
<p>During this time, Armstrong has also dispatched employees and top execs, such as advertising head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090429/exclusive-platform-a-head-coleman-out-at-aol-as-well-as-cfo-and-more-to-come/">Greg Coleman</a> and communications and communities head <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090526/people-networks-president-joanna-shields-leaving-aol/">Joanna Shields</a>, and hired a few key staffers of his own; <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090528/aol-spin-off-approved-last-night-by-time-warner-board-heres-the-inside-details-not-in-the-press-release/">announced a pending spinoff</a> of the company; and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090611/back-to-the-future-aol-adds-local-with-two-acquisitions-including-ceos-start-up/">bought some stuff</a> (including a company he funded).</p>
<p>It will be interesting to see what comes next&#8211;after the 100-day gathering in Dulles, which should come sometime after Armstrong&#8217;s July 15 deadline, of course.</p>

On  Wednesday the company was <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE54J72V20090520">ordered to pay $290 million to Toronto-based i4i for willfully infringing its patents</a>. Seems Microsoft used some of i4i’s XML technology in Word 2003 and, though it was apprised of its violation, used it in Word 2007 as well. Said i4i lawyer Douglas Cawley: &#8220;E-mails from Microsoft show they knew about the patent and infringed to make i4i products obsolete.&#8221;</p>
<p>The $290 million verdict is the second-largest patent jury award this year, the largest of all&#8211;coincidentally, I’m sure&#8211;being the $388 million verdict against Microsoft won by Singapore’s Uniloc in April over an infringement of its security technology. Then, as in the i4i case and most other patent rulings that haven’t gone its way, Redmond responded with incredulity, claiming it couldn’t have possibly infringed on the patent because the patent is invalid. &#8220;We believe the evidence clearly demonstrated that we do not infringe and that the i4i patent is invalid,&#8221; <a href="http://www.crn.com/software/216403587;jsessionid=44L5OHK2RJNNGQSNDLRSKH0CJUNN2JVN"> said David Bowermaster, a Microsoft spokesman, in the company’s now boilerplate statement on such matters</a>. &#8220;We believe this award of damages is legally and factually unsupported, so we will ask the court to overturn the verdict.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Like many people today, I keep a lot of my important documents and communications in digital form. But I still print out the files and put them on my desk so I can have them in front of me instead of buried in computer subfolders within folders.</p>
<p>This week, I tested BumpTop, a program that displays items in a way that makes programs and files easy to see and open. It does this by turning your digital desktop into a three-dimensional environment that looks like your physical desktop. A few quick gestures neatly stack piles of items or tack important items onto one of four virtual walls. You can even flick your mouse to &#8220;toss&#8221; files to programs or group files into a pile, like stacking all your PDF files together. Special photo frames on the walls show slideshows of photos from PC folders or feeds from photo Web sites like Flickr or Picasa.</p>

<p>BumpTop comes from Toronto-based Bump Technologies Inc. and it has been in a private testing stage for a little over a year. Starting Wednesday, it&#8217;s available for anyone to download at <a href="http://bumptop.com" rel="external">BumpTop.com</a>. It comes in a free or $29 Pro version. In Pro, files you use most often will grow bigger over time and you can flip through a pile&#8217;s contents by rolling the mouse&#8217;s scroll wheel, among other things.</p>
<p>I used BumpTop Pro for over two weeks and tried it on four computers running three different Windows operating systems: XP, Vista, and the prerelease version of Windows 7. BumpTop says it hopes to develop a Mac version in the future. (It should work on Parallels, a program that runs Windows virtually on a Mac, according to Bump Technologies, but not on Fusion, a similar program.)</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Good-Looking Display</h5>
<p>This program is a real looker. When I showed it to friends, they immediately wanted to play with it, dragging pictures to pin on virtual walls and drawing circles around several icons at once to stack them into piles like magic. And when you toss files to certain programs, they perform functions. A Microsoft Word document tossed to the email icon generates an email with the document attached. Photos I tossed to the Facebook icon were posted on the social-networking site. Files can be tossed to a printer, the recycle bin, other piles and, in the Pro version, attached USB drives.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Program Switch</h5>
<p>But as much as I liked BumpTop, I kept coming back to the same conclusion: It was fun while I was using it, but I wasn&#8217;t naturally inclined to leave the program I was using &#8212; like my email program, my browser or TweetDeck &#8212; just to do something on the desktop in a more visually pleasing way. And since the computer&#8217;s desktop has never been as functional as popular programs, it&#8217;s hard to expect people to spend a lot of time there.</p>

<p>Also, while BumpTop introduces a new, attractive user interface to the desktop, its 3-D functionality doesn&#8217;t extend throughout the whole computer, so you find yourself jumping back and forth between different ways of doing things.</p>
<p>BumpTop requires a computer with 3-D graphics and drivers, which older machines won&#8217;t have. Just for kicks I installed BumpTop on my older XP machine, which didn&#8217;t have the necessary requirements, and sure enough, it ran slowly and didn&#8217;t represent programs like Microsoft Outlook (MSFT) and Mozilla&#8217;s Firefox with the correct icons. Specific system requirements for BumpTop, along with a list of what the Pro version has that the free version lacks, can be found at BumpTop.com/download.</p>
<p>BumpTop&#8217;s point of view is like looking down from the ceiling in a room with four walls. It installs with three picture frames on its walls, and these display content from three sources: your computer&#8217;s My Pictures folder, Flickr.com&#8217;s main photo feed and a Flickr feed of photos Bump Technologies chose. You can change the images in settings, or delete the frames altogether.</p>
<p>The picture frames show ever-changing slideshows, and to do this, they only load low-resolution thumbnails of the images they display. This looks good when you&#8217;re quickly glancing at BumpTop, but if you double-click on a frame to zoom in, you&#8217;ll see a blurry photo. Bump Technologies says it plans to improve this where possible. Any photos on BumpTop other than those displayed in frames are visible in high resolution when you zoom in.</p>
<p>BumpTop loads with icons representing Twitter, Facebook and Email pinned to its right wall. And you can add your printer to the wall and toss things to it, printing them immediately.</p>
<h5 class="subhed">Wall Clingers</h5>
<p>The small visual details built into BumpTop make it a pleasure to use. Every time you open something, its representative icon hurls toward you in 3-D as if it were thrown. Items that are pinned to a wall flip end over end and playfully cling to the wall surface like a starfish with sticky, suction feet.</p>
<p>Special mouse movements generate on-screen options for organizing your BumpTop. Lassoing multiple images by drawing a line around them with your mouse pulls up a pie menu with options like &#8220;Grow,&#8221; &#8220;Shrink&#8221; and &#8220;Grid.&#8221; A &#8220;Pile by Type&#8221; option can organize all or just some of your desktop icons into piles arranged by similar characteristics, which by itself could be a big help.</p>
<p>Searching for something on your desktop isn&#8217;t a hassle anymore. Any time BumpTop is open, you can start typing and the program will search names of all items in BumpTop for results with the text you&#8217;re typing; those that match your request will glow.</p>
<p>I tried BumpTop on a touch-screen PC running Windows 7 &#8212; the HP TouchSmart PC &#8212; and the feeling of reaching out and tossing things around with my finger was even more enjoyable than using the mouse. As touch-screen PCs become more popular, BumpTop and programs like it will fit in more naturally.</p>
<p>If you miss seeing the photo that was on your regular desktop, an adjustment in Settings lets you use your Windows background on the BumpTop floor. Images can be assigned to each of the four walls; I assigned a photo of the National Mall at night to my back wall and a photo of my favorite lighthouse to my floor.</p>
<p>BumpTop is a pleasure to use and for no cost, the free version is certainly worth a try. If you like what you see and you&#8217;re willing to change the way you use your desktop, the Pro version might be worthwhile. Just be sure your computer has the correct specifications and be ready for blurry close-ups of the picture frames.</p>

Net income for the period was $518.3 million, or 90 cents per share, on $3.46 billion in revenue. Analysts had been expecting 84 cents a share on revenue of $3.4 billion. Gross margins were in line with expectations&#8211;40 percent for the quarter and expected to improve to between 43 and 44 percent in the current quarter. Finally, RIM (RIMM) added about 3.9 million net new BlackBerry subscriber accounts during the quarter, raising its total subscriber base to about 25 million.</p>
<p>All in all, <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=15740">a very impressive showing</a>. Certainly, investors were agog over RIM&#8217;s financials. Shares in the company spiked on the news, rising more that 20 percent to $59.37 in after-hours trading. &#8220;This is wildly better than people were looking for,&#8221; <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/companyNews/idUSN0227537920090402">said Duncan Stewart, analyst at DSAM Consulting in Toronto</a>. &#8220;Getting improvement in both margin and growth at the same is a rare thing.&#8221;</p>
