It’s no secret in Silicon Valley that the HBO series “Game of Thrones” is a big favorite among the geek set — including Facebook CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg — what with its dungeons-and-dragons tone and fur-and-leather outfits.

Which is why Time Warner’s premium cable network decided to do one of its three red-carpet premieres for the third season of the hit fantasy show with a splashy event on Wednesday in San Francisco that will be teeming with digerati.

“We all thought it would be fun for the creators and the cast to come here and feel the enormous enthusiasm this community and our partners have for ‘Thrones,’” said HBO CEO Richard Plepler.

Eight cast members of “Thrones” will be attending, as will Plepler, HBO COO Eric Kessler, creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss and … drumroll … author George R.R. Martin.

The show is an adaptation of “A Song of Ice and Fire,” Martin’s series of popular fantasy novels, the first of which is titled “A Game of Thrones.”

No surprise — there is much swordplay in the epic. And that’s where AllThingsD comes in, since Walt Mossberg and I will be doing an onstage Q&A with Martin, Benioff and Weiss right after the first show of the new season is aired.

It’s on, or, as Martin wrote: “When you play the game of thrones, it’s either you win or you die.” Or enjoy a lovely party after.

Here is perhaps one of the most cleverly creepy trailers for a new documentary called “Room 237,” which examines the many intricacies that have sprung up about the horror movie classic, “The Shining.”

At the time it was released in 1980, the film started as more of a box office flop for director Stanley Kubrick. But, since then, it has become a cult phenom, and that is where “Room 237” starts the fun, with all the many theories — mostly of the conspiracy kind — about “The Shining.”

Gory fun, of course.

“Something Ventured: Risk, Reward, and the Original Venture Capitalists” is a documentary that celebrates — pretty much without a lot of criticism — the very first venture capitalists who were behind the tech giants launching companies like Apple, Intel, Cisco, Atari and Genentech.

Starting in January, “Something Ventured” is being aired on public television stations nationwide.

The film — which premiered at SXSW last year — focuses on the key VCs, including investor Arthur Rock, Kleiner Perkins’ Tom Perkins, Sequoia Capital’s Don Valentine and New Enterprise Associate’s Dick Kramlich. It’s full of great stories from them and others, such as remembering the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs’s proclivity to not worry too much about showering.

And there are some tasty quotes, too:

Perkins: “I don’t know how to write a business plan. I can only tell you how we read them. We start at the back, and if the numbers are big, we look at the front to see what kind of business it is.”

Rock: “Steve Jobs is a national treasure. He is so visionary, and so bright. I had to fire him, though.”

Valentine: “I’m not interested in entrepreneurs who will do it our way. I’m not interested in entrepreneurs who think there’s a dress code. I’m interested in entrepreneurs who have a vision of doing something consequential –preferably that becomes big.”

And from Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, where Jobs once worked: “They (Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak) offered a third of Apple Computer for $50,000, and I said, ‘Gee, I don’t think so.’ I could have owned a third of Apple Computer for $50,000. Big mistake.”

Indeed.

So unexpected that the wet noodle who has been Bella throughout the “Twilight” movie series should suddenly show some gumption in the finale film that is coming in November.

But that seems to be the case from this second, action-packed trailer, in which she swoops around and talks about being alive more than ever.

Now that Bella’s undead, of course, and has red eyes and a rapidly growing kid to defend. Message from the messagey author of the books: Motherhood makes you a mama grizzly.

(Edward is just as languidly tiresome as ever, though.)

Also, the sullen actress who has long played Bella, Kristen Stewart, actually displays more than one glum affect and even — horrors — smiles with charm.

Scary!

Simply put: It looks hysterical, even if all the jokes are in this video.

The troublemaking Cohen also appeared on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend, torturing famed film director Martin Scorsese.

Oh, lord — it’s back to the whispery tones and deep, dark thoughts of global Armageddon again, in the latest installment of the “Batman” movie franchise, “The Dark Knight Rises.”

I was depressed for a good 30 minutes after watching this trailer, which features death, destruction, ennui, class warfare and the most freakish mask on a villain since “The Silence of the Lambs.”

Try not to weep:

Here’s a new trailer for HBO’s upcoming series “The Newsroom,” by famed Hollywood screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.

The series — by the man behind the hit television show “The West Wing” and the Facebook movie “The Social Network” — is set at a cable news channel under siege in the new-media age.

In other words, lots of hand-wringing over blogs and tweeting, along with the drama.

It looks tasty, and Walt Mossberg and I will be asking Sorkin about it at the 10th D: All Things Digital conference at the end of this month, where he will be appearing as a speaker.

Of course, if you’re going to see one teen cult-movie classic, you’re obviously going to be forced to see another one — or at least the trailer for it.

Hence, what could go better with the kids-fight-to-the-death match of “The Hunger Games” than a spanking-new vampire — Bella finally is one, in the second part of “Twilight: Breaking Dawn” — who hunts deer for their blood in a very lovely blue frock?

News flash: Bella and Edward are now the same temperature!

If you want a good laugh on a Friday, tune into this movie trailer for “Dark Shadows,” the remake of the popular television show from the 1970s that is being reborn by director Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp.

His Barnabas Collins is a pleasure, especially when compared to the broody vampires of “Twilight.” And it looks like everyone involved is having a very good time.

Case in point: The invisible fang-brushing part is obviously silly, but fantastic nonetheless.

Hollywood director James Cameron debuted the trailer for the upcoming 3-D version of the huge movie hit, “Titanic,” on Facebook earlier this week, where he also delivered an intro.

Why? Perhaps it’s the movie’s nearly 10.5 million fans on the social networking site, which Cameron referenced.

You can only see those remarks on Facebook, but here’s the trailer for the rerelease, coming out next April, as well as a video of Cameron at the eighth D: All Things Digital conference in 2010, where he first revealed that “Titanic” would come out in 3-D:

And here’s the CGI-rich trailer for the second “Snow White” movie that Hollywood will be pumping out.

First there was “Snow White & the Huntsman,” which is all angsty and dark, and stars the ever-glowering Kristen Stewart as Snowie, and Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen.

This one, called “Mirror Mirror,” is funny, and stars Julia Roberts as the wise-cracking baddie, with an ingenue in the role of Ms. White.

And here I thought the sulky genius of Kristen Stewart would fade away after the final two “Twilight” movies made their debut — one opens this week (yay!).

Instead, this trailer for “Snow White & the Huntsman” looks 100 percent freakier than any sparkly vampires.

The CGI special effects seem pretty awesome here, from the explosion of scary birds to the soldiers who shatter like black glass to the de-aging of the Evil Queen to the blobbish mirror-mirror-not-on-the-wall.

And not one single sign of any adorkable whistling dwarves to be found.
