<p>Yesterday, I did an interview session at the SXSW interactive festival in Austin with <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130309/automattics-matt-mullenweg-on-the-importance-of-working-remotely/">Matt Mullenweg</a>, where we discussed the lofty topic of the future of blogging.</p>
<p>He&#8217;d know, as the founder of Automattic, the company behind the giant blog-hosting platform WordPress.com, which powers a lot of websites big and small (like this one, which is both!).</p>
<p>We talked about a lot of topics onstage, including the recent work-from-home debate (he&#8217;s for it), new trends in Web design and software, to-sell-or-not-to-sell, and, of course, the importance of mobile to the ecosystem.</p>
<p>Before the session, I did a little pre-interview video with the always affable entrepreneur as we rode through the streets of the Texas capital in a pedicab.</p>

<p>Video conferencing company <a href="http://bluejeans.com/">Blue Jeans Network</a>, which is obviously a big supporter of working from home for employees, is putting its money where its telecommuting mouth is to speak out on the debate that was spurred by Yahoo CEO Marissa&#8217;s Mayer new rule to ban the practice at her company.</p>
<p>Thus, the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120627/blue-jeans-network-switzerland-of-video-conference-streams-raises-25-million/">startup</a> is putting up a billboard on Highway 101, just north of San Francisco Airport on the tech-commuting path, which you can see above. Calling itself the &#8220;The unofficial sponsor of WFH,&#8221; it urges Mayer to call the company &#8212; &#8220;We can help.&#8221;</p>
<p>(<em>Cheeky!</em> I like it.)</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://bluejeans.com/blog/marissa-mayer-work-from-home">blog post about the controversy</a>, Blue Jeans noted: </p>
<p>&#8220;What&#8217;s right for Yahoo, however, is against almost every workforce trend. Telecommuting is here to stay. In competitive hiring environments, working from home is undoubtedly an enticing perk that employers can extend to tip the scales.&#8221;</p>
<p>Ironically, a Blue Jeans spokesperson pointed out to me that next week is Telework Week.</p>

<p>Later today, new Yahoo CEO and latest savior Marissa Mayer is expected to debut in her first major turn as a public company CEO, as the company reports its third-quarter earnings.</p>
<p>Unfortunately, her initial script recounting the last three months is likely to be rather lackluster, with Wall Street anticipating yet another nothing-to-write-home-about financial performance from the Silicon Valley Internet giant.</p>
<p>Investors are expecting $1.08 billion in revenue and 25 cents in net income per share in a report that is likely to show more of the same kind of weakness Yahoo has had for far too long. The main reasons this time: Worrisome growth in search and display advertising, especially compared to robust worldwide trends. </p>
<p>Such concerns have kept Yahoo&#8217;s stock pretty much flatlined at about $16 a share since she arrived in July.</p>
<p>And that is not likely to change until Wall Street hears more specifics about Mayer&#8217;s future plans. Yahoo has previously said she would outline more about her direction on the call with investors later today, after the financial results are released.</p>
<p>Thus, it&#8217;s basically a wait-and-see attitude, until Mayer does that, and perhaps until after there is some actual traction.</p>
<p>As noted by <a href="https://cantor2.bluematrix.com/sellside/EmailDocViewer?encrypt=3b1d0f6d-dc77-43d1-b166-983f55c61dc4&#038;mime=pdf&#038;co=cantor2&#038;id=kara@allthingsd.com&#038;source=mail">Cantor Fitzgerald&#8217;s Youssef Squali</a>:</p>
<p>&#8220;1) We&#8217;ve seen this movie before (this new CEO is the fifth in as many years) and 2) it will take some time before any of the yet-to-be-announced changes yield any meaningful P&#038;L results. Until then, we see Yahoo! shares remain cheap with limited downside, but no clear catalyst to drive them higher short/medium-term.&#8221;</p>
<p>Among the highlights that investors hope will be covered by Mayer and also by new CFO Ken Goldman: </p>
<p>A cogent strategy to turbocharge the business, which &#8212; as <strong>ATD</strong> has reported many times &#8212; will focus on tech and product solutions; what acquisition arenas are in the pipeline; plans for new talent recruitment and perhaps layoffs of less-than-stellar employees at the bottom 20 percent of Yahoo; the status of talks to sell off its stake in Yahoo Japan; and, perhaps most of all, what are the plans to return cash to shareholders from its recent sale of its partial stake in China&#8217;s Alibaba Group.</p>
<p>That might already be in the works via stock buybacks that Yahoo has been engaged in, but it will be interesting to see if Mayer will provide more specifics.</p>
<p>Investors will also look for some details around mobile growth, and perhaps an update of how Yahoo is fixing its search monetization problems with its partner, Microsoft.</p>
<p>One development that some expect is that Mayer will drop future expectations, in a classic take-out-the-trash move.</p>
<p>As J.P. Morgan&#8217;s Doug Anmuth noted:</p>
<p>&#8220;Similar to what AOL CEO Tim Armstrong did when he stepped in a few years ago, we believe Mayer is likely to remove low quality ad units and over-monetization throughout the site. Despite the near-term monetization impact, we think this would be a good thing, as it would improve the user experience and de-clutter the site. Additionally, we think it&#8217;s likely new management would simply want to start off with a low bar.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, if she makes it low enough, anything Mayer will do going forward is likely to look pretty good.</p>

<p>A month ago, I <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120309/here-come-the-first-d10-speakers-new-york-mayor-michael-bloomberg-entrepreneur-sean-parker-zyngas-mark-pincus-and-more-on-the-red-hot-seat/">posted an initial list of speakers</a> for the 10th <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conference.</p>
<p>After a decade, the event &#8212; which is held in Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif., just south of Los Angeles, at the end of May &#8212; has attracted another amazing group of speakers, including: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; serial entrepreneur Sean Parker, who will appear with Spotify co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek; Zynga founder and CEO Mark Pincus; Federal Trade Commission Chairman Jon Leibowitz; LinkedIn Chairman and VC Reid Hoffman, who will appear with the social business site&#8217;s CEO Jeff Weiner; and Skype CEO Tony Bates.</p>
<p>Now, here&#8217;s another group of stellar speakers we&#8217;ve added to the programming lineup (and there are still even <em>more</em> big names to come in the weeks ahead): Oracle CEO Larry Ellison; former tech analyst superstar and now VC Mary Meeker of Kleiner Perkins; Intellectual Ventures&#8217; Nathan Myhrvold; Pixar co-founder and Disney animation head Dr. Ed Catmull; and Visa President John Partridge.</p>

<p>Larry Ellison, CEO and founder of the enterprise giant Oracle, needs little introduction, as one of tech&#8217;s highest profile figures and a true Silicon Valley icon. Frankly, I think the short bio that&#8217;s on Oracle&#8217;s Web site says it all: &#8220;Larry Ellison has been CEO of Oracle Corporation since he founded the company in 1977. He also races sailboats, flies planes, and plays tennis and guitar.&#8221; There will be a lot to talk about with the voluble and always entertaining exec &#8212; who appeared at the <strong>D</strong> conference once before many years ago &#8212; from the current state of the tech industry to insights to where it&#8217;s all going. (In addition, Ellison has agreed to appear on a panel we are doing as a tribute to his close friend, Apple&#8217;s former CEO Steve Jobs.)</p>

<p>Another well-known tech figure is Meeker, who is now a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, having joined the storied venture capital firm in early 2011. She focuses there on investments in its digital practice and via KP&#8217;s Digital Growth Fund, working with companies such as Spotify, Jawbone and One King&#8217;s Lane. But Meeker is perhaps best known for her long stint &#8212; 1991 to 2010 &#8212; as a star Internet research analyst at Morgan Stanley, where she brought many of the Internet&#8217;s great companies to the attention of Wall Street and beyond. She also wrote a series of groundbreaking reports on the landscape. That includes her annual &#8220;State of the Internet,&#8221; which Meeker will debut this year at the conference in an extended demo of her always riveting Internet trends presentation.</p>

<p>Nathan Myhrvold is also a tech legend, having worked for 14 years as chief strategist and CTO of Microsoft. But, instead of retiring, the avid inventor decided to focus on patents, founding and leading a controversial company called Intellectual Ventures, which buys them up and licenses them out (or sues if it doesn&#8217;t sell). With all the mishegas around patents right now, it&#8217;s a good time to have Myhrvold back to explain it all and perhaps to take some of the blame for the explosion in intellectual property lawsuits. (Myhrvold also co-authored a cookbook, &#8220;Modernist Cuisine,&#8221; so we hope we will also get some sort of futuristic cooking demo. Perhaps, Patently Delicious Flan?)</p>

<p>Speaking of tasty, the animation from Pixar over the years has been just that and it&#8217;s been one of Disney&#8217;s greatest acquisitions. Given how much Pixar has contributed to animation technology, we are glad to finally get Dr. Ed Catmull onstage. As co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios and president of Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios, he will discuss where entertainment and technology are intersecting and where they are not. Catmull is a geek&#8217;s geek in the industry &#8212; having also founded the computer graphics laboratory at the New York Institute of Technology, the computer division of Lucasfilm, as well as Pixar, which he did with chief creative officer John Lasseter. Get ready to talk about image compositing, motion blur, subdivision surfaces, cloth simulation and rendering techniques, texture mapping and the z-buffer. Also, Catmull&#8217;s five Academy Awards.</p>

<p>Lastly, it is perfect timing for bringing on John Partridge, president of Visa. With swirling issues around online identity theft, digital privacy, the future of money and the rise of upstart competitors such as Square, Partridge has his hands full at the credit card giant. One of the most neglected arenas in tech, the way we manage payments is perhaps the biggest story of the next era, especially as it relates to mobile and the rise of smartphones as all-purpose devices.</p>

How would we know that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120210/who-put-sports-in-my-twitter-again-the-jeremy-lin-explainer/">Jeremy Lin</a> has taken the NBA by storm after crashing on his brother&#8217;s couch? How would we know that <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120213/adele-nicky-minaj-chipotle-twitter-watched-the-grammys-so-i-didnt-have-to-video/">Adele&#8217;s Grammy performance</a> was real-TV worthy, and Chris Brown&#8217;s was definitely not? And how would we know that Friday is the day we&#8217;re supposed give innocuous shout-outs to seemingly random groups of microblogging fiends?</p>

<p>According to the expected year-end box-office data figures compiled by Hollywood.com, the industry raked in $10.1 billion for 2011 in North America.</p>
<p>While that seems like a nice haul, it&#8217;s 4.5 percent less than in 2010. While not enough to result a major downturn in limo-riding and Botox, the results are likely to cause entertainment moguls some worry, since they are accompanied by continuing trends, including another year of lower attendance.</p>
<p>And given that the revenue was unusually bolstered by more higher-priced 3-D movie-ticket prices &#8212; Hollywood released several dozen 3-D films in 2011, double the previous year&#8217;s amount &#8212; the latest numbers are even more disappointing.</p>
<p>While some holiday movies did well &#8212; namely &#8220;Mission: Impossible &#8212; Ghost Protocol,&#8221; which has  taken in about $70 million domestically since its opening less than two weeks ago &#8212; it pales in comparison to such digital hits as Activision&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111212/activisions-call-of-duty-hits-1-billion-in-sales-in-16-days/">Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3</a> videogame, which pulled in $400 million in one day from the much-desired youth market.</p>
<p>It surpassed $1 billion in sales in 16 days, eclipsing the box office of the blockbuster movie &#8220;Avatar,&#8221; which took 17 days to gross seven figures.</p>
<p>Does that mean that the continued competition for the leisure time of pretty much everyone between digital and analog has gotten worse &#8212; an epic battle of the movie industry versus game players, tablets and smartphones?</p>
<p>Or is it because so many movies made in 2011 turned out to be just awful? (If you saw &#8220;New Year&#8217;s Eve,&#8221; you&#8217;ll know exactly what I mean.)</p>
<p>One thing is clear: No one is going to pay for poor-quality content, no matter the screen size. </p>
<p>More number-crunching to come, as the industry debates the issue into 2012 (coincidentally, the title of a movie I happened to like, as you can see below!), and at the upcoming <a href="http://allthingsd.com/conferences/dive-into-media/about/"><strong>D: Dive Into Media</strong></a> at the end of the month, down near Los Angeles, in the belly of the Web-smacked beast.</p>

<p>Last night, Yahoo&#8217;s board gathered for a pre-meeting dinner, a precursor to a day-long meeting today to weigh several bids from private equity firms to buy part of the Silicon Valley Internet giant, including Silver Lake and TPG Capital.</p>
<p>Among the thorniest of issues will be the low price that the firms want to pay for a 19.9 percent stake in the company. Silver Lake has offered $16.50 and TPG a dollar more. </p>
<p>In the past year, Yahoo share prices have seen a low of $11.09 and a high of almost $19. It closed yesterday at $15.70 &#8212; a price that is mostly due to sale rumors &#8212; making the offers not much of a gain on current market valuation.</p>
<p>The transaction type being contemplated is called a PIPE &#8212; or a Private Investment in Public Equity &#8212; with the investment below 20 percent, which allows Yahoo to avoid a shareholder vote on the issue.</p>
<p>While the Yahoo board had hoped for bids above $20, they are not expected to be forthcoming, considering the weakness in its business over recent years and the difficulty of returning it to health and growth. </p>
<p>Results in its upcoming quarter, for example, are expected to be weak again, with trouble in its advertising business, largely due to uncertainty around the business.</p>
<p>The low price, along with the attempt to bypass shareholder approval, is sure to infuriate Yahoo&#8217;s major investors, given they have watched the value of their stakes wilt over the years under current board management.</p>
<p>In the last five years, due to continually muddled leadership and the missing of key Internet trends, Yahoo shares have dropped 44 percent in value, which compares with huge gains from companies like Amazon and others.</p>
<p>Major Yahoo stakeholders are already irked by the PIPE idea itself, which could transfer power to private equity firms at preferential terms.</p>
<p>Another possible bone of contention will be the preservation of at least some parts of Yahoo&#8217;s current board.</p>
<p>Under a plan by Silver Lake, for example, it would get three board seats, as well as another one for a CEO of its choosing. Another seat will go to Yahoo co-founder and current board member Jerry Yang. There will be six independent board members, but it is not clear if they would be new or include some current directors.</p>
<p>One of the Silver Lake choices would be well-known Silicon Valley legend <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111128/yahoo-will-marc-or-wont-he/">Marc Andreessen</a>, who is now a powerful VC. The appeal of Andreessen is important to some major shareholders who have turned sour on Yang.</p>
<p>Who will be CEO of the rejiggered entity will also be discussed at the meeting. Sources said Silver Lake and TPG have definite candidates in mind and Yahoo has also been conducting an official search.</p>
<p>In other words, there&#8217;s a lot on the plate of Yahoo&#8217;s board today, which also needs to revisit continued proposals from its Asian partners &#8212; China&#8217;s Alibaba Group and SoftBank of Japan &#8212; to sell back its stakes in Alibaba and Yahoo Japan in various tax-free schemes. </p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo &#8212; which has thus far rejected such efforts &#8212; might now consider selling a part of their shares back, up to half. This would allow the company to give a cash dividend to its disgruntled shareholders. </p>
<p>If thwarted, as has been previously reported <em>ad nauseum</em>, Alibaba and SoftBank are considering their own bid with the help of other U.S. private equity firms, such as <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111111/alibaba-and-softbank-meet-with-blackstone-as-promised-yahoo-investment-effort-proceeds/">Blackstone</a>.</p>
<p>Other PE firms &#8212; especially ones who have not signed Yahoo&#8217;s non-disclosure agreement related to any deal &#8212; are also hanging under the hoop, so to speak, to see what happens. At least one firm hopes the Yahoo board will reject the low-priced partial bids, leaving the court wide open again. </p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s still anyone&#8217;s game,&#8221; said one possible bidder.</p>
<p>Except for Yahoo&#8217;s put-upon employees and shareholders, this is anything but fun. More on <em>that</em> soon.</p>

<p>Called &#8220;Imagine 2011: Marketing Leadership Summit&#8221; and held at its Redmond, Wa. HQ, the two-day gathering is designed to wow peeps by trotting out a spate of <em>strategery</em> concepts those who buy advertising on Microsoft&#8217;s various digital offerings from its Bing search service to MSN to Xbox to Windows Phone 7.</p>
<p>Some program topics: &#8220;Elsewhere USA,&#8221; &#8220;Teens Hanging Out, Messing Around, and Geeking Out&#8221; and &#8220;Audience Buying Goes Real-Time: True or False?&#8221;</p>
<p>Presumably the goal of all this heavy-duty thinkery is to get these marketers to buy more ads from Microsoft by warning them about being left behind on the platform as the train chugs inevitably off to the digital future.</p>
<p>And just in case that doesn&#8217;t work, there will be a free concert tonight featuring the hipster band Train for the Imagine 2011 attendees at Microsoft Co-founder Paul Allen&#8217;s Experience Music Project venue to open those ad wallets.</p>
<p>Hey, Geek Mister: Stop sending all those digital marketing bucks to Google and Facebook and give them to us!</p>

<p>Before a panoply of various social, design and anthropology experts pontificated, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer kicked off the day with his patented loud and lovable Ed McMahon act, complete with the booming catchphrases.</p>
<p><em>Hey-Yo!</em></p>
<p>&#8220;You have to move forward or die!&#8221; (About the Web.)</p>
<p>&#8220;If you wanna get big, you have to think big!&#8221; (About the Windows 7 Phone smartphone deal with Nokia.)</p>
<p>I love the U.S. government, I don&#8217;t want to give it a hard time.&#8221; (About its crappy Web site, not the antitrust conviction thing.)</p>
<p>Ballmer outlined some key trends, which are not new to anyone paying attention over the last five years: Location; social; pervasive displays; ubiquitous connectivity; computers everywhere; cloud; data; and natural user interaction</p>
<p>He also joked about how there were 10 fake Steve Ballmers on Facebook, all using Steve Ballmer photos. <em>Imagine that!</em></p>
<p>You&#8217;d think Microsoft&#8217;s badillion-dollar investment in the social networking site would get you a verified account!</p>

<p>Actually, pissed off is more related to the fact that the person who conceived and organized the Imagine 2011 event was former global ad sales head Carolyn Everson.</p>
<p>But, she <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110215/exclusive-facebook-grabs-microsoft-ad-head-everson">left the company</a> in mid-February after only six months, for essentially the same job at Microsoft partner Facebook.</p>
<p>Since then Microsoft and Facebook have been wrangling over the talent raid, including Microsoft even considering <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110302/exclusive-microsoft-mulls-legally-poking-facebook-over-ad-talent-raid/">legal action to block the move</a>.</p>
<p>Nonetheless, the show must go on and it did in a pretty classy way.</p>
<p>But not without another road bump in today&#8217;s action&#8211;the news that Microsoft&#8217;s own marketing head, longtime company veteran <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20110330/awkward-as-microsoft-marketing-event-opens-its-longtime-marketing-head-announces-retirement/">Mich Mathews</a>, was leaving the software giant later this year.</p>
<p>The departure had the halls buzzing about what happened and who will be taking over the big job with a $1 billion marketing budget.</p>
<p>Maybe some external CMO sitting right there in the audience or perhaps some internal Microsoft candidate such as Yusuf Mehdi or Capossela?</p>
<p>I suppose it&#8217;s time for some strategery <em>stat</em>!</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i0.wp.com/newenterprise.allthingsd.com/files/2011/02/napier-275x200.jpg?resize=275%2C200" alt="" title="napier" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3166" data-recalc-dims="1" />Practically everyone who meets him asks Lanham Napier when his company is going to be sold. He&#8217;s the CEO of Rackspace, the Web hosting and cloud computing concern that&#8217;s one of several thought to be acquisition targets following the recent buyouts of Terremark by Verizon and NaviSite by Time Warner.</p>
<p>So many people have asked Napier about the possibility that Rackspace might be taken out, it&#8217;s not hard to detect that his answer is well rehearsed. Rackspace is not for sale, he says, and he won&#8217;t comment on any approaches by larger companies it may be fielding. But he clearly doesn&#8217;t mind the speculation.</p>
<p>The market certainly is working on the assumption that an acquisition is coming. I talked with Napier on Friday, the day after Rackspace reported quarterly earnings that grew 50 percent over the same period in 2009, which was enough to send Rackspace shares up by more than $3, or more than 8 percent, closing at $40.07&#8211;more than twice what it traded for a year ago.</p>
<p>Rackspace will be a giant all its own, Napier insists, before it gets taken out by one of the lumbering tech giants that might like to drop a few billion dollars to absorb it.  Ask him Rackspace&#8217;s chances of being acquired in the next several months, and he insists the company is not for sale. It sure sounds like he means it, as the growth opportunity that lies before him is just so good. But it&#8217;s also clear that he enjoys being in the position of being asked.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a nice sentiment, but organic growth is only going to get you so far. Rackspace will cross the billion-dollar mark in revenue for the first time this year, and it has only $105 million in cash, so the only acquisitions Rackspace can make without going into a debt are small ones like the <a href="http://newenterprise.allthingsd.com/20110209/exclusive-rackspace-to-acquire-anso-labs/">one last week of Anso Labs</a> that NewEnterprise reported exclusively. The smart money says we&#8217;ll get a chance to see how serious Napier is about remaining independent before the end of the year.</p>
<p><strong>NewEnterprise: Let’s talk about your business against the backdrop of the industry you’re in. In the last few weeks we’ve seen both NaviSite and Terremark acquired by larger companies. Clearly there’s some consolidation going on in the Web hosting and cloud services hosting business.</strong></p>
<p>Napier: There is a shift in technology market around cloud. The market is shifting from one where companies do things themselves to buying technology as a service. We think of it as a world that’s going from buying inputs to buying outputs. We think this is a nascent trend and we’re in the first game of a seven-game series. On a macro basis we see this as the biggest growth opportunity in technology. Our strategy is to win the most valuable segment, which we believe is going to be the service segment. So if you look at how the market is developing, you have players like Amazon that’s offering a do-it-yourself cloud. For people who want the lowest price, and can do the work themselves, Amazon is an incredible pick. What we’re focused on is trying to be a service leader. We want to serve companies that want to run a critical app and who want us to run it for them and take accountability for it so they can sleep well at night. Over the past six quarters or so we’ve found ourselves in a crazy good spot. The growth opportunity ahead of us is expanding.</p>
<p><strong>Let’s talk about growth. You don’t have all much cash on the balance sheet, about $105 million or so. You can grow organically, or you can acquire. You’ve made some small acquisitions recently. Is that going to continue?</strong></p>
<p>We are an organic growth company. We have been since inception. The acquisitions we’ve done have been about technology and talent to improve our portfolio and the way we serve customers. We will remain an organic growth company. There are, I think, really two kinds of companies. Those that can grow organically and those that can’t, and so they grow by acquisition. Some companies are good at growing through acquisition. We’re just not. We’re organic growth folks here, so we’re going to stick to that. But we’ll still buy technology, capabilities and talent that we think is critical. As to the consolidation that’s taking place in the industry, it’s a great validation of the growth opportunity. There are some legacy tech and telecom companies that are behind and are trying to buy their way into the game. There was a similar wave of consolidation eight years ago and a lot of our competitors got taken out.</p>
<p><strong>So let me ask the question you’re getting a lot lately. I’ve had three conversations with different people who have each picked three different large technology companies they think should acquire Rackspace. Have you been approached by anyone?</strong></p>
<p>We have a policy not to comment on anything like that all. What I will tell you is that we’re not for sale. We feel like we have a tiger by the tail. I’ve been lucky to be at the company for 11 years and I think the next 11 years look better than the last. We’re not building the company to flip it. We think the market opportunity is such that new giants are going to emerge, and we want to be one of those giants.</p>
<p><strong>Absent a scenario that someone shows up with eight or 10 billion in cash to buy your company, what are your strategic priorities for the year?</strong></p>
<p>There’s a couple. We are making big investments in our product and service portfolio. That’s one. And then number two, we think we have a chance to improve the fundamental economics of our business model. As we make these investments, we’ll add more services and capabilities on top of our basic compute service. This drives up the average revenue for our basic compute which creates better outcomes for our customers and increases our economics. It’s a virtuous cycle. Our average revenue per server has increased for six consecutive quarters.</p>
<p><strong>What are your biggest costs, and what kind of gross margin do you tend to run?</strong></p>
<p>I think of them as investments, but I know that’s just semantics. Our no. 1 investment is technology and the Rackers [employees] that serve our customers. So if you look at the cost of revenue line, a year ago it was 31.5 percent. As of the end of 2010 it was 31.1 percent. We made some improvement. But we’re more focused right now on developing customer loyalty than we are in driving efficiency. It’s early in the game, and anytime a market is going through a period of rapid growth like this, it’s all about winning as many loyal and profitable customers as we can. When the growth slows down someday we’ll focus more on improving efficiencies throughout the business. Even so, in 2010 we grew faster, increased our margin and and improved our return on capital. Those are all difficult things, and we pulled it off.</p>

Since its debut, more than 65 percent of the Fortune 100 have deployed or piloted the device. This despite Apple&#8217;s continued focus on the consumer market.</p>
<p>&#8220;We haven&#8217;t pushed it real hard in business, and it&#8217;s being grabbed out of our hands,&#8221; <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/230710-apple-s-ceo-discusses-f4q10-results-earnings-call-transcript?part=qanda">Steve Jobs said last year</a>. &#8220;And I talk to people everyday in all kinds of businesses that are using iPads, all the way from boards of directors that are shipping iPads around instead of board books, down to nurses and doctors in hospitals and other large and small businesses.&#8221;</p>
<p>If Apple&#8217;s not pushing the iPad into the enterprise market, how is it getting there? Carried in by the rank and file&#8211;just as smartphones were. Employees are buying iPads, and other mobile devices as well, and enterprise is increasingly supporting them on the back end and sometimes even subsidizing them, or their use.</p>
<p>In other words, the consumer market has evolved into a de facto evangelist for Apple in enterprise, a lucky development for the company, which is uniquely positioned to benefit from it.</p>
<p>&#8220;This trend should mean that the key to corporate success over the long term is being strong in consumer devices that you use everyday,&#8221; says Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes. &#8220;As a result, the purchase pattern is shifting toward laptops, tablets and smart phones being bought by consumers (all key areas of Apple&#8217;s strength), while direct sales of corporate products have shorter and smaller upgrade cycles. We call this trend the “Consumerization of IT,” which benefits companies with strong consumer appeal and customer service reputations&#8230;.We believe Apple has a large lead in terms of driving this trend, while it presents challenges for traditional PC vendors, in our opinion. We believe the iPad&#8217;s success in the enterprise will help Apple make further inroads into the corporate market with other products eventually.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting, this vision of the iPad as Apple&#8217;s Trojan Horse for enterprise, particularly since it appears to be a natural evolution of the consumer market. And if it accelerates corporate adoption of the device as well as other Apple hardware over the long term&#8211;well then, it truly is magical and revolutionary.</p>

Power and Associates</a> suggests an increase in consumer demand for new cars. And for Sirius that means continued subscriber growth&#8211;perhaps even significant subscriber growth.</p>
<p>The company&#8217;s satellite radio service is pre-installed in about 60 percent of cars sold in the United States, and historically its take rate has been upward of 44 percent. So when J.D Power says that light-vehicle sales for January will hit 794,500 units, 14 percent higher than January 2010, that&#8217;s good news for Sirius. Even better is this: The research firm is raising its retail sales forecast for the entire year. Not by much&#8211;just to 10.5 million units from 10.4 million units.</p>
<p>But the trend is upward, and J.D. Power and Associates&#8217; Jeff Schuster says there&#8217;s room for even more upside. &#8220;Optimism is increasing for the auto industry following a stronger outlook for the economy,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;GDP growth is expected to be in the 3 percent to 3.2 percent range for 2011. As the macro drivers continue to improve and credit availability increases, further upside potential remains.&#8221;</p>
<p>In other words, 2011 is shaping up to be a good year for Sirius XM.</p>

<p>According to comScore, the number of U.S. visitors to Web-based email sites in November 2010 declined six percent compared with the previous year. Email engagement declined even more. Meanwhile, the number of people accessing email from cellphones and the like increased by 36 percent to 70.1 million. And the number who accessed it daily from a mobile device grew 40 percent to 43.5 million. The trend, then, is clear: Mobile email is going mainstream, and fast. Which is great news for companies, such as Apple and Google, that offer standalone mobile email apps, and potentially worrisome for those who don&#8217;t.</p>
<p>Not that Web mail is going anywhere. ComScore notes that it remains one of the most popular activities on the Web, reaching about 70 percent of the online population in the States each month. Still, there is a shift occurring. Said Mark Donovan, comScore senior VP of mobile, &#8220;In a relatively short period of time, adoption of mobile email has reached 78 percent of the smartphone population, which is very similar to the penetration of Web-based email among Internet users. These findings demonstrate just how quickly channel shifts can occur and why it’s now essential for media brands to have a strong presence in both arenas.”</p>

Both say the market was weak, and both are citing the same reason: Apple&#8217;s iPad.</p>
<p>One interesting revelation is that both Hewlett-Packard and Acer, the top two vendors by volume in the Gartner survey, saw their shipments <em>decline</em> year-on-year in a period where the rest of the industry was seeing growth, albeit slower than had been previously expected.</p>
<p>Hewlett-Packard maintained its market lead, with a share of about 18 percent worldwide, and 29 percent in the U.S. Acer came in second. Both saw their unit volumes decline. For HP, that translated to a decline of more than 200,000 units in fourth-quarter PC sales, or a little more than 1 percent. For Acer, which had hitched its wagon to the netbook craze a few years ago, it translated to a decline of nearly 2 percent, or more than 222,000 units. Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba all saw their shipments grow, with Lenovo leading the pack, growing a healthy 21 percent.</p>

<p>Gartner says that worldwide shipments totaled 93.5 million units in the fourth quarter, which amounted to growth of only 3 percent over the same period a year earlier, falling short of the 5 percent growth it had previously forecast. Gartner Analyst Mikako Kitagawa blames the iPad and other media tablets for the slackening growth. She says the industry’s one bright spot, oddly enough, is in enterprise, where companies are upgrading the machines they issue their employees. For the full year, the worldwide PC industry recovered from the recession, growing nearly 14 percent to 308 million units.</p>

<p>Apple remained in fifth place in the U.S. with a share of market just shy of 10 percent, and less than a percentage point behind Toshiba. Notably, this figure doesn&#8217;t include iPads, which hit a combined 7.5 million units in Apple&#8217;s third and fourth fiscal quarters, both of which ended before the holiday season. (Apple will reports earnings for its first fiscal quarter, which includes the holiday season, next week.)</p>
<p>IDC&#8217;s survey found the same trend, but it differed from the Gartner survey on a few key points. IDC put Dell in second place, behind HP and ahead of Acer in the worldwide market share race. I’ll attribute this to differences in methodology, since Gartner and IDC differ a little in how they count.</p>

<p>Another interesting note is that IDC paints a more negative picture of Acer, pegging its decline in fourth-quarter sales at 15 percent from 2009 to 2010. I asked IDC analyst Loren Loverde about the difference in IDC&#8217;s results versus Gartner&#8217;s, and he said part of it comes from differences in methodology, but also from the fact that Acer is closely held and so is a tricky company to track, and the data it does disclose isn&#8217;t as detailed as the other companies&#8217;.</p>
<p>But Loverde also says decline, whether 2 percent or 15 percent, reflects a stark business reality for Acer. The road to PC growth through mini-notebooks and geographic expansion is closed. It was a good strategy while it lasted.</p>

<p>Driven by the steady proliferation of multitouch smartphones and tablets&#8211;one in particular&#8211;the worldwide touchscreen industry will probably see 30 percent year-over-year growth in 2010 by the time the year is over. So says NPD DisplaySearch, which figures suppliers shipped 6.3 million tablet/mini-note touchscreens in the first half of 2010 and more than 20 million in the second half. Quite the upward trend and one that we&#8217;ll almost certainly see continue next year as the iPad juggernaut rolls on, more Android tablets arrive at market and consumer and enterprise demand for all of them grows. Wintek and TPK Touch Solutions have a lot to look forward to next year.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://i1.wp.com/emoney.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ATDpolyvore-275x228.jpg?resize=275%2C228" alt="" title="Polyvore&#039;s Style Analytics" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-921" data-recalc-dims="1" />Fashionistas may roll their eyes at the effort, but Polyvore is trying to make designing and merchandising apparel more data driven&#8211;and presumably less arbitrary.</p>
<p>To do so, the online fashion community will be crunching user-generated data to roll out analytical tools for designers and retailers. Think Quantcast or Compete, but for the fashion industry.</p>
<p>The beta tool, called Style Analytics, will be free and openly available to anyone on Polyvore&#8217;s Web site. It&#8217;s expected to launch officially tomorrow afternoon.</p>
<p>The data points are coming from its community of users, who create virtual outfits&#8211;or what they call &#8220;collages&#8221; of clothing&#8211;by mixing and matching shirts, pants, dresses, shoes, skirts and accessories from around the Web.</p>
<p>Jess Lee, Polyvore&#8217;s co-founder and head of product management, said it will show what&#8217;s trending, so brands can make better decisions. Specifically, it shows how consumers associate your brand, for instance, with Abercrombie &#038; Fitch or Juicy Couture.</p>
<p>&#8220;The fashion industry, from designing to merchandising and marketing is inefficient and not data driven,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Our goal is to open it up and make it more democratic and more data driven.&#8221;</p>
<p>The Mountain View, Calif.-based company has raised about $8.7 million in venture capital since 2007. Each month, its two million registered users create one million collages that generate 140 million page views.</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I suppose I&#8217;m a sucker for year-end trend lists, given I&#8217;ve written up reports about trends from <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101213/youtube-in-2010-gregory-brothers-top-indie-chart-bieber-crushes-all/">YouTube</a>, <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101213/shocking-bieber-upset-oil-spill-tops-twitters-2010-trends/">Twitter</a> and <a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101209/viral-video-2010-as-told-through-google-products/">Google</a> in just the last few days. In short: Bieber, Bieber, Bieber.</p>
<p><img src="http://i0.wp.com/networkeffect.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/HMU-275x159.jpg?resize=275%2C159" alt="" title="HMU" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1221" data-recalc-dims="1" />Next up is Facebook, which offers aggregated data about trends in the status updates posted by its members, including their activity around major news events and their usage of slang.</p>
<p>The best anecdote from the bit is about a newly popular acronym on Facebook, &#8220;HMU.&#8221; This comes after Facebook noted in 2009 the growth of the trendy whine &#8220;FML. (Explanation: <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=215076352130">We&#8217;ll leave the &#8220;F&#8221; open to your imagination, but the &#8220;ML&#8221; stand for &#8220;My Life.&#8221;</a>) Here&#8217;s the whole explanation of HMU by Facebook data scientist Lars Backstrom:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>The shorthand for &#8220;hit me up&#8221; was this year’s biggest surprise. In early 2009, the acronym HMU was virtually unheard of.  Only a few posts a day contained HMU, and half of them were probably typos. By May, however, it started to grow slowly and was averaging about 20 posts a day.  The volume roughly doubled every month, and by the end of 2009 it had risen to 1,600 posts a day&#8211;too modest of a number to be on our radar for last year’s list.</p>
<p>However, HMU continued to grow aggressively throughout 2010, increasing by about 75 percent each month.  By the end of summer, HMU reached 80,000 mentions per day.</p>
<p>In early September, an interesting pattern emerged in how people use HMU.  Until that point, it was spreading like wildfire, but was being used with roughly equal frequency throughout the week.  In September this changed, as usage rates started going through huge swings from day to day.  The reason? Before September the demographic most likely to ask their friends to “HMU” was on summer break and looking to hang out most nights.  Then many of these folks headed back to school, and HMU became a weekend-oriented request.</p></blockquote>
<p>Some notable stats from the Facebook 2010 roundup:</p>
<ul>
<li>At key moments in certain games during the World Cup, as many as 50 percent of all new status updates were World Cup-related.</li>
<li>&#8220;Toy Story 3&#8243; was the movie most mentioned in status updates, followed by &#8220;The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,&#8221; &#8220;Inception,&#8221; &#8220;Alice in Wonderland&#8221; and &#8220;Iron Man 2.&#8221;</li>
<li>Mentions of the iPad and iPhone 4 accounted for 25 million total Facebook status updates. (I&#8217;m not sure what the total number of status updates for the year was.)</li>
<li>A day after the Haiti earthquake Facebook was receiving 1,800 posts per minute on the topic.</li>
<li>Yes, Bieber. People talked about the teenage pop star throughout the year, but the single greatest statused-about Bieber moment was the MTV Video Music Awards.</li>
<li>Facebook could identify 33 separate activity spikes for when each of the Chilean miners was rescued.</li>

<p>According to Goodman, who obtains his data from independent wireless retailers, 80 percent of smartphone sales at Verizon in November were Android devices (46 percent of those were Droids). Which is astonishing for two reasons. 1.) That&#8217;s a huge percentage for a relatively new mobile OS in a very competitive market. 2.) In December of 2008, RIM was touting the BlackBerry as Verizon&#8217;s best-selling device. In two years, it&#8217;s gone from a flagship to a johnboat. </p>
<p><a href="http://i1.wp.com/digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ITG2.jpg"><img src="http://i2.wp.com/digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ITG2-380x285.jpg?resize=380%2C285" alt="" title="ITG2" class="aligncenter size-Medium380 wp-image-54155" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p>And with Android continuing to lead smartphone sales growth at Verizon, it seems increasingly unlikely that the BlackBerry will ever reclaim its lost title. With sales of the Tour/Bold series dwindling and no Storm refresh in sight, BlackBerry sales at Verizon are in serious decline. They dropped 45 percent year-over-year in the third quarter of this year, and Goodman sees them trending down 49 percent YOY in the fourth. </p>
<p><a href="http://i2.wp.com/digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ITG1.jpg"><img src="http://i1.wp.com/digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2010/12/ITG1-380x225.jpg?resize=380%2C225" alt="" title="ITG1" class="aligncenter size-Medium380 wp-image-54156" data-recalc-dims="1" /></a></p>
<p>An ugly and humiliating decline, and worrisome. Because if the BlackBerry is faring this poorly against Android at Verizon, how will it fare against Android and the iPhone, which is <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101014/ipads-debut-on-verizon-feels-like-an-opening-act/">widely expected to debut on the carrier&#8217;s network next year</a>?</p>
<p>No wonder Verizon doesn&#8217;t think the upcoming launch of BlackBerry 6 devices on its network will <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20101206/analyst-verizon-wants-pseudo-exclusive-on-iphone/">have a &#8220;material impact&#8221; on sales</a>. Why would it?</p>

By the end of 2011, the iPad will generate more than two percent of all North American Web traffic. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s according to Chitika, which has been tracking iPad adoption rates on its ad network (three billion ads served monthly across more than 100,000 sites) for some time now. </p>
<p>As of this month, the iPad accounts for 0.83 percent of all traffic on Chitika&#8217;s network, research director Daniel Ruby tells me. And at current growth rates, which have been steady since the device&#8217;s launch, it should hit 2.3 percent by the end of next year. To get that metric, Ruby took the past two months&#8217; data trends for iPad growth relative to the full network&#8217;s traffic and, after accounting for spikes and dips, built out a growth line for the next twelve months. And while Chitika has taken some flak in the past for <a href="http://chitika.com/research/2010/meet-the-ipad-with-real-time-stats/">inaccuracies</a> with its <a href="http://labs.chitika.com/ipad/">iPad sales counter</a>, Ruby says he&#8217;s confident about this particular projection because he&#8217;s predicting a metric Chitika can directly measure.</p>

<p>BoomTown is showing my age quite a bit today, after I unearthed notes this morning from 11 years ago.</p>
<p>It was for a story I never ended up doing in December of 1999 for The Wall Street Journal&#8211;where I was pretty much the only Internet beat reporter for the newspaper in Silicon Valley then&#8211;about the possibility that Mary Meeker was considering leaving Morgan Stanley in New York for two hot West coast jobs.</p>
<p>The high-profile Wall Street Internet analyst never made the move back then.</p>
<p>But, at long last, Meeker finally decided today to take one of those offers, joining Kleiner Perkins today as a venture partner in the digital arena.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a much-needed hire by the legendary firm and its most prominent partner, John Doerr, given Meeker&#8217;s deep well of experience and the critical need for the still-lagging-behind-hotter-VCs Kleiner to wade more definitively into more current digital trends that she knows well.</p>
<p>For sure, Kleiner dominated Web 1.0 by backing what are now its golden oldies, such as Netscape Communications, Amazon and Google.</p>
<p>But it&#8217;s more recent Web 2.0 investments and influence has not been as impressive, especially with regards to its brighter lights and sharper entrepreneurs.</p>
<p>As in: No Facebook. No Foursquare. No Groupon. No Twitter (yet).</p>

<p>To be fair, Kleiner has made some interesting moves&#8211;mostly due to its iconoclastic partner <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101022/a-nerd-by-any-other-name-would-be-as-geek-bing-gordon-waxes-poetic-and-more-at-the-sfund-launch/">Bing Gordon</a> (pictured here)&#8211;such as one fund to focus on <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100331/kpcb-doubles-down-on-ifund-200-million-for-iphone-and-ipad-apps">Apple iPhone and iPad apps</a> and another on <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101021/liveblogging-unveiling-of-the-sfund-at-facebook-with-guest-stars-kleiner-amazon-and-zynga/">social</a>.</p>
<p>And it&#8217;s has one big and shiny Web 2.0 bet&#8211;which it never fails to point to an awful lot&#8211;in gaming phenom Zynga, also courtesy of Gordon.</p>
<p>Bringing on Meeker to add to that now will surely help Kleiner at a critical time, giving it new investment chances, as the digital space shift sharply again.</p>
<p>In an <a href="http://voices.allthingsd.com/20101129/morgan-stanley-analyst-mary-meeker-moving-to-kleiner-perkins/">interview with the Journal today</a>, Doerr correctly called the time&#8211;a mash-up of social networking, e-commerce and mobile&#8211;&#8221;a third wave of innovation.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a quick interview this morning, Meeker underscored this, noting, &#8220;the level of engagement from large companies and the innovation coming from all over Silicon Valley makes this a unique time to invest in and build important companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>She said she was attracted to the team at Kleiner to help her move to a new level of expertise and will be spending more significant time in Northern California at her home here.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is an opportunity to stretch myself in a great spot at a great time,&#8221; said Meeker, noting she was especially interested in the mobile space. &#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty massive shift going on right now and I wanted to be part of it.&#8221;</p>
<p>But a move way back when by Meeker would have been an even bigger deal, since the Web 1.0 was at what turned out to be its peak moment in December of 1999&#8211;the ill-fated AOL-Time Warner merger would not be announced for a month, in fact.</p>

<p>And Meeker&#8211;who was involved in that deal and most of the other bigs ones, especially the IPOs&#8211;was the undisputed &#8220;Queen of the Net&#8221; from her powerful perch as the top kingmaker on the booming scene.</p>
<p>After working at other firms, she had come to Morgan Stanley as an analyst in 1991, covering PCs, hardware, software and the still nascent Internet scene.</p>
<p>I had met her several years later in a late-night interview in her office in Manhattan, Chinese food included, while I was working on a book on the rising power of AOL.</p>
<p>AOL was one of the many companies she had introduced Wall Street to, and she had become one the key nexuses for all the newly hatched Web players.</p>
<p>For her to leave her job then would have caused reverberations everywhere, since investors far and wide were taking her recommendations on the new companies of the moment, such as Amazon and eBay.</p>
<p>So&#8211;while she would later endure negative scrutiny for some of her too bullish cues, after the bursting of the Internet bubble came soon after&#8211;nabbing her at the time would be been a very big story.</p>
<p>And who was trying to entice her?</p>
<p>Well, Bill Gross of Idealab for one, offering her the possibility of big IPO stock options (which would turn out to be less than valuable soon after).</p>
<p>Said Gross in an email to me this morning:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>Back when we were opening an Idealab office in NY, we wanted to get the best talent in the universe, and that led us right to Mary. She was brilliant and ahead of her time then, as now.</p>
<p>At the time, we talked about working with her to have her insights about industries and companies help us inform the direction our existing companies should take, as well as brainstorm together what new companies to create.</p>
<p>I think Mary was just too happy doing what she was doing, and she went on to have another great 10-year run doing just that!</p></blockquote>
<p>And the other suitor? That was Doerr of Kleiner Perkins.</p>
<p>A longtime friend and a star venture capitalist whose investments benefited greatly from Meeker&#8217;s attention, he had long tried to recruit her.</p>
<p>Fast forward to today, as Doerr seems to have finally sealed the deal.</p>
<p>Meeker&#8217;s title at the investment bank has most recently been as its head of global technology research.</p>
<p>At Kleiner Perkins, no surprise, she&#8217;ll focus on the firm&#8217;s investments in social, mobile and e-commerce, trying to turbocharge its efforts.</p>
<p>Presumably including, as<a href="http://networkeffect.allthingsd.com/20101129/twitters-buffet-of-options-investors-like-dst-or-acquirers-like-google/"> NetworkEffect&#8217;s Liz Gannes reported earlier today</a>, Kleiner making a big push to invest in a new badillion-dollar funding round for Twitter.</p>
<p>Meeker&#8217;s presence could help there for sure, especially since she has been a big proponent of the microblogging service, as you can see on page 18 of her most recent annual Internet trends report&#8211;titled <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101116/and-the-meeker-shall-inherit-the-virtual-earth-in-other-words-marys-annual-internet-trends-preso">&#8220;Ten Questions Internet Execs Should Ask &#038; Answer.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s clear, as you will read below, those are just the kinds of queries Kleiner needs to be making.</p>

<p>Here we go with the Yahoo third-quarter earnings call starring CEO Carol Bartz, who has some&#8211;in the immortal words of Ricky Ricardo&#8211;<em>&#8216;splaining</em> to do.</p>
<p>Yahoo turned in a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101019/yahoo-tops-earning-expectations/">much-needed solid quarterly earnings report</a>, with slightly better-than-expected earnings, although still weak revenue.</p>
<p>Of course, there are all the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101013/yahoos-stock-acts-like-its-in-play-because-it-kind-of-is/">takeover rumors</a>, the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100930/yahoo-confirms-exec-departures-the-internal-memo-from-the-foxhole">exec departures</a> and fights with partners such as <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100916/apparently-yahoos-bartz-didnt-get-the-memo-about-avoiding-land-wars-in-asia">China&#8217;s Alibaba Group</a>.</p>
<p><strong>2 pm PT:</strong> First on is the lovely investor relations lady, Marta, saying stuff I never pay attention to.</p>
<p>But Bartz came on right away and she sounded subdued and very much on script.</p>
<p>Good idea!</p>
<p>She began by explaining what she has been up to and&#8211;once again with feeling&#8211;exactly what Yahoo is.</p>
<p>&#8220;The key words are innovative, content, media and communications,&#8221; she stressed.</p>
<p>Technology is all well and good, but Yahoo is the &#8220;largest digital media, content and communications company.&#8221;</p>
<p>She also briefly addressed the departure of execs: &#8220;Some people leave, some get promoted and some good people arrive.&#8221;</p>
<p>Well, you could put such turmoil that matter-of-factly, I suppose.</p>
<p>Bartz then asked the question: &#8220;What have we done to re-engineer Yahoo?&#8221;</p>
<p>She reeled off a list she has repeated many times before, the point of which was to let us all know she has been mighty busy cleaning up the big mess she had to deal with on arrival.</p>
<p><em>So lay off</em>, all you naysayers! It&#8217;s kind of like what President Barack Obama is saying these days, as he looks forward to huge political losses in the upcoming election.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s apparently a <em>disciplined</em> approach. &#8220;First you walk, then you run.&#8221; Then, she added, you FLY!</p>
<p>Don&#8217;t look down, Carol!</p>
<p>She promised to talk about what&#8217;s on all our minds&#8211;as in the takeover swirl related to AOL, News Corp. and a passel of private equity moneybags circling Yahoo.</p>
<p><strong>2:15 pm:</strong> Time for the numbers from CFO Tim Morse, which <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101019/yahoo-3q-earnings-slides-the-good-the-bad-and-the-revenue-ugly/">you can see here</a>.</p>
<p>He was much jauntier than usual. I wonder if that was in the script. Smile with your voice, Tim!</p>
<p>I mostly did not listen to this spiel, as it was a recount of the numbers I already read. But there are some nuggets.</p>
<p>Apparently, for example, revenue for owned and operated search is down because users are clicking on the really good new results from the Microsoft algorithmic search transition, so they are not clicking on paid search as much.</p>
<p><em>Hmmm&#8230;.</em>I wonder what happens when they get great.</p>
<p>Then it was on to earnings and stock repurchases, designed to goose the shares, which Yahoo considers undervalued.</p>
<p>So do investors.</p>
<p>Next, he moved on to the outlook, which was weak.</p>
<p>And Morse also noted the uncertainty that has to do with the search and online advertising alliance transition. &#8220;Caution is warranted,&#8221; said Morse.</p>

<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re pleased with our third-quarter results,&#8221; summarized Morse, seemingly ignoring the revenue issue.</p>
<p><strong>2:31 pm:</strong> Bartz was then back on discussing the search alliance and the rocky relationship with China&#8217;s Alibaba Group. Rocky is my word and actually is also Alibaba&#8217;s.</p>
<p>At least all is well with Microsoft, Yahoo&#8217;s one-time nemesis.</p>
<p>It has been a big transition, of course, Bartz noted. Indeed.</p>
<p>Then Bartz went out of her way in praising Alibaba CEO Jack Ma, whom many sources said she has treated shabbily in the past.</p>
<p>It is &#8220;a good productive business relationship,&#8221; said Bartz.</p>
<p>Other than that, she politely suggested we all butt out of what Yahoo is going to do with the asset, a 29 percent stake of Alibaba.com worth $3.1 billion, according to the company.</p>
<p>Finally, Bartz said Yahoo had &#8220;potential&#8221; and promised a payoff to shareholders in the months ahead.</p>
<p>That would be nice.</p>
<p><strong>2:38 pm:</strong> Time for Q&#038;A.</p>
<p>The first question was about the search revenue growth. Soon!</p>
<p>The next was about search revenue and display advertising and a left-field query on engagement on smartphones.</p>
<p>Same answer, and also people will use Yahoo on any screen.</p>
<p>Next question was on display growth. Same answer.</p>
<p>Will any of these analysts ask the <em>good</em> questions about takeover rumors and other thorny management issues?</p>

<p>Wait, finally there came a sheepish request for clarification about the rumors&#8211;well, they are real, so <em>realmors</em>&#8211;about takeover plans by private equity folks, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20101014/department-of-deja-vu-little-aols-quixotic-quest-to-land-giant-yahoo/">along with AOL&#8217;s Tim Armstrong</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;As tempting as it is to tell you what I really think, you know I can&#8217;t comment,&#8221; said Bartz, who really sounded like she wanted to comment.</p>
<p>Give in, Carol! In the words of Oscar Wilde, which is BoomTown&#8217;s operating motto: &#8220;I can resist everything except temptation.&#8221;</p>
<p>Nope, she will not utter a word about &#8220;hypothetical this and hypothetical that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Instead, the boilerplate: &#8220;We like our strategy, we like our progress, and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;re focused on.&#8221;</p>
<p>Next, more questions about revenue weakness. Bartz blamed it all on the drag of search revenue. &#8220;The main drag on our growth has been search revenue,&#8221; she noted.</p>
<p>She said it will get better once the whole transition kicks in.</p>
<p>Bartz did sound convincing, especially when she noted it was part of a six-year trend in decline in search. By the end of 2011, she promised, it will <em>all</em> be different.</p>
<p>But, in the immortal words of Clint Eastwood in &#8220;Dirty Harry&#8221;: &#8220;You&#8217;ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, a question about a &#8220;bloated&#8221; work force. Yahoo employee count is up seven percent, although costs are down 12 percent.</p>
<p>Morse: &#8220;No, we&#8217;re not bloated.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bartz took a question about competition in the display market, as in Yahoo is going to get smacked by rivals, such as Google.</p>
<p>&#8220;There is always competition and competition only makes us better,&#8221; said Bartz. &#8220;We&#8217;re running very fast and not going to give up this leadership in display very easily.&#8221;</p>

<p>Given Google&#8217;s inroads here, she better run faster than the Road Runner.</p>
<p>The last question was about monetization of mobile.</p>
<p>Lots of pretty, empty words from Bartz, especially since Yahoo does not have a really competitive offering compared to Google and Apple.</p>
<p>It should be added that both <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101014/google-q3-beats-earnings-estimates/">Google</a> and <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20101018/of-course-apple-beats-earnings-estimates/">Apple</a> smoked it in terms of revenue growth in their quarterly earnings this week.</p>
<p>Also, I hear that Facebook social networking site is growing pretty quickly.</p>
<p>And it ended, with nary a decent question from Wall Street analysts about the clear turmoil at the long-troubled Silicon Valley icon and answers about what Bartz is going to do to address it.</p>
<p>The media is in listen-only mode for these calls, which is a shame, since I for one would love to listen to what Bartz has to say.</p>
<p>I know you&#8217;re busy and all, Carol, but perhaps you can talk over dinner soon?</p>

				<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Mobile ad network Millennial Media published its latest report on the mobile device space this morning and it reveals some intriguing trends in smartphone market leadership. It has a particularly interesting story to tell about Google’s (GOOG) Android OS. </p>
<p>According to the Millenial Media’s April MobileMix report, Android ad requests on its network rose 77 percent month-over-month, and have grown 282 percent since January. During the same period, ad impressions from Android devices also rose, and Android smartphone manufacturer HTC grabbed a large enough number to become the fifth-largest device maker on Millennial Media’s network. </p>
<p>The buffet of new Android devices that have arrived at market over the past few months, Droid and Nexus One among them, has clearly spiked adoption of the OS.</p>
<p>With a 10 percent share of ad impressions, Android is now the third largest operating system among those the company tracks, falling between RIM&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry OS with a 17 percent share and Windows Mobile OS with a five percent share. (Click on chart and tables below to enlarge.)</p>

<p>Android may not be the leading OS on Millennial Media’s network&#8211;that honor belongs to Apple (AAPL) with its 62 percent share of U.S. smartphone impressions&#8211;but it is the fastest growing. </p>
<p><em>Another</em> <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20100325/smartphone-usage-spikes-up-193-percent-year-over-year/">mobile advertising market research study</a>, I realize. But Millennial currently reaches 83 percent of the U.S. mobile audience. That makes it the largest mobile ad network in terms of reach, so these metrics are worth paying attention to.</p>

<p>A few other data points worth noting:</p>
<ul>
<li>iPhone OS ad requests decreased 17 percent month-over-month in April. Still, since January, they’ve risen 1.5 percent.</li>
<li>BlackBerry OS ad requests grew 10 percent month over month. Since January, they’ve increased more than 36 percent.</li>
<li>iPad ad requests spiked 77 percent week over week for the first full month the device was available for purchase. </li>

<p>Start-ups that offer users big discounts via socially-charged local group-buying services are getting a lot of attention these days, especially from venture firms.</p>
<p>Today, it&#8217;s Washington, D.C.-based <a href="http://livingsocial.com/">LivingSocial</a>, which just announced a $25 million Series B round, led by U.S. Venture Partners.</p>
<p>The funding will be used to expand its footprint of cities, among other initiatives.</p>
<p>Sites such as LivingSocial feature a &#8220;daily deal&#8221; with a huge discount from a wide range of local businesses, such as restaurants and spas. They use social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to turbocharge consumers into action.</p>
<p>This kind of thing has been tried before, of course, centering on users who group together to get discounts on items by purchasing them in bulk.</p>
<p>In Web 1.0, there were many group-buying sites, most of which failed badly. One of the more high-profile ones&#8211;Mercata&#8211;got $90 million in funding from investors, including Paul Allen’s Vulcan Ventures.</p>
<p>Still, the group-buying space is getting mighty competitive of late. Recently, Chicago-based Groupon grabbed <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091202/lets-make-a-deal-groupon-nabs-30-million-in-funding">$30 million from, among others, Accel Partners</a>.</p>
<p>BoomTown, in fact, did a <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20100304/groupons-andrew-mason-speaks">video interview with Groupon founder Andrew Mason</a> last week, after which I was inundated with press releases from a half-dozen wannabe competitors.</p>
<p>Ironically, for businesses based on discounting, there seem to be no price cuts when it comes to group-buying start-up funding.</p>

Though January is typically a weak month, global semiconductor sales rose slightly thanks to solid demand for personal computers, cellphones and other consumer electronics. Chip sales were up 0.3 percent in January from the previous month and up 47 percent year-over-year (see chart below; click to enlarge).</p>

<p>The chip industry&#8217;s Great Dark Times seem to be over.</p>
<p>“Worldwide semiconductor sales in January increased significantly compared to one year ago, reflecting today’s improving business environment for the industry,” <a href="http://www.sia-online.org/cs/papers_publications/press_release_detail?pressrelease.id=1715">SIA President George Scalise said in a statement</a>. “January and February of 2009 were the low point of the industry downturn as the semiconductor industry and electronics manufacturers quickly responded to the global economic recession.”</p>
<p>Should the upward trend the SIA charted in January continue, the industry could see growth beyond its November forecast of $242.1 billion.</p>

Led by Cisco, the round will be used to drive adoption of Quantcast’s Media Program, a comprehensive video audience measurement service designed to help clients like NBC Universal, Time Inc., Hulu.com, CBS (CBS) and ABC sell targeted ads on their own.   </p>
<p>The involvement of Cisco (CSCO) in this round is particularly noteworthy in that it shows the networking giant’s interest in marrying its content delivery systems with tools designed to measure the impact of the content being delivered. <a href="http://paidcontent.org/article/419-quantcast-raises-27.5-million-third-round/">As paidContent aptly notes</a>, this is exactly the sort of integration that led <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090915/measure-this-adobe-buys-web-traffic-counter-omniture-for-1-8-billion/">Adobe (ADBE) to acquire Omniture</a> (OMTR) for $1.8 billion last year. Seems we have the beginning of a trend here.</p>
