Of course, it makes perfect sense for Mark Cuban (pictured here) to appear in a very long and involved cameo as himself on the HBO original comedy series “Entourage.”

Heck, the fun-loving Internet billionaire could easily slip into the pack of young Hollywood dudes on the show and seem part of the gang.

Cuban–who is always up to some kind of amusing stunt (for example, see his dance stylings on “Dancing With the Stars” in 2007)–actually has already been in two episodes on the premium cable television service and it looks like he will also make the finale.

The story line has Cuban vying to nab a tequila company in Mexico out from under the nose of a very befuddled Turtle.

Enjoy:

And here is Cuban also playing himself in the video of an interview I did with him at the seventh D: All Things Digital conference in 2009:

All Things Digital will be liveblogging today's Microsoft "social" event beginning about 10 am PT. It is reportedly about new mobile devices the social giant will release in an effort to play catch-up with Apple and Google.

So, grab some coffee, pop that waffle in the toaster and keep this tab open to get the info as it breaks live from San Francisco's Mighty event space.

Take two parts tech giant, mix with equal measures of new technology and PR, and garnish with a little mystery. Or at least that’s how to mix the perfect Apple-flavored product release.

Microsoft (MSFT) is trying a recipe from that cookbook, too, at its “social event,” which begins at 10 am PT.

No surprise, but Microsoft’s plans haven’t been met with quite the same media fury as the recent launches from hype-saturated Apple (AAPL). But perhaps today’s announcements will be the fresh new ingredients the software giant is looking for.

Hard details are scant, but most observers expect the event to be about of two smartphone devices (possibly named “Turtle” and “Pure”) that–together with a new Windows mobile operating system called Windows Phone 7–make up Microsoft’s secretive “Project Pink.”

Immediately below: A short video we put together after we got Microsoft’s new Kin 1 and 2–the names of the new devices, it turns out–in hand. And below the video, the liveblog text.

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=2A5D225E-471B-4F61-AA94-9808CCC84134&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://m.wsj.net/video-players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

9:22 am: We’re here at Mighty, the trendy gallery space chosen for today’s event. No phones yet, just a bunch of cold reporters and a Belgian waffle truck.

9:48 am: We’ve been let in and are getting settled. Mighty is a gallery space-cum-club with lots of exposed beams, techno-club style lighting and at least three disco balls–very Microsoft.

No one in the promo photos flashing on flat-screen TVs everywhere looks more than midtwenties.

Hmm. Wonder who Microsoft is targeting with the new devices?

9:58 am: Crowd is quieting down, lots of trendy tracks on the stereo here as the last people file in and take spots at a standing table. It has gotten pretty packed.

Just got the five-minute call from the disembodied lady voice on the PA.

10:05 am: We’re rolling. Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s mobile device division, takes the stage.

Name-drops Verizon (VZ), Sharp, Vodafone (VOD) in first sentence.

Now we’re watching a short video of young mobile users talking about their phone needs.

10:08 am: Young users in video are talking all about social. Facebook, Twitter and even MySpace.

Lots of talk about photos and sharing.

Now Bach is back on. He calls the people in the video part of the “Social Generation.” He says, “Their social life is priority Number One. Microsoft is answering this by incorporating different levels of friends into their lives.”

“Self expression is super important to these young social users. Like publishing a magazine of their life.” Bach calls it “Lifecasting.”

He says the third finding is that these people are “multiscreen” users.

10:11 am: Bach asks how they can incorporate those things into a phone for the first time.

Now Bach is talking about Windows Phone 7 and says that it was designed for a broad audience.

This product, it seems, will be built on a small, specialized version of Windows Phone 7.

10:13 am: Bach says, “Windows Phone 7 is about simplifying life. This social version is about ‘amplifying’ life.”

He says that today Microsoft will be announcing a phone called Kin.

10:15 am: Now Derek Snyder, leader of Kin team, takes the stage.

There are actually two versions of the phone, and Kin 1 and Kin 2 are the two flavors we expected. One is a candybar with a qwerty keyboard; the other looks like a smaller, round device with a slide keyboard.

Snyder shows the “loop” interface. Sort of a unified inbox for all kinds of status messages.

10:17 am: Now showcasing “the Kin spot,” a region on the screen where “sharing happens.”

It appears this doesn’t automatically interact with social networks. He says, “You can even update statuses to social networks.” That seems to happen with other interfaces. Snyder again hits on the “three categories of friends.”

10:19 am: Snyder now is showing the “app-lications.”
Now he’s showing Bing search, which is GPS-aware.

He moves an event and a venue into a single-status update, then shares that group. Not sure what that looks like externally.

10:22 am: Now Snyder is talking music and about the experience of using this with Zune. He says the devices can stream music from Zunepass.

Now for the camera: 5- and 8-megapixel sensors on the phones, and the Kin 2 shoots HD video. Both phones have a flash, which he says is eight times brighter than any on-phone flash to date.

Also showing “Kin studio,” a Web interface that shows all your phone activity online.

Photos taken on the device are accessible there, as well as call history and status updates. It’s all viewable on a timeline.

Also, photos are all geotagged.

10:27 am: Bach returns to the stage. Sounds like he’s going to talk about partners.

10:27 am: Bach says that Sharp built the Kin hardware, and they will be on the Verizon and Vodaphone networks.

10:28 am: John Harrobin, SVP of digital media for Verizon, takes the stage.

He gives Verizon talking points about being largest, most reliable, etc., and now talks about how Kin will fit into people’s lives.

He takes the message in another direction, away from the youth market. Now, “Kin is also for parents or anyone who is all about photos and video.” says Harrobin. He also says that Verizon will be the exclusive partner for Kin. It will release the phones next month.

10:32 am: Bach returns yet again to say that “Kin is for generation upload.”

Looks like the event is wrapping up.

10:32 am: Lights up, music up, event over.

There are Kins around the room for the media to handle. We’ll head over there now and end the liveblog.

BoomTown is not quite sure what to think of another new advertising campaign from an Internet giant--this time by eBay.

With the tagline, "Come to Think of It, eBay," the print, television and online marketing campaign starts today to "boost its standing as a holiday shopping destination."

Interestingly, the ads have been crafted by San Francisco-based Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, which has also just nabbed the lead role in the $100 million advertising campaign by Yahoo.

BoomTown–fresh from slapping around six graders caught in a Bing stupor and commenting on the use of restaurant-seeking vampires by Microsoft (MSFT)–is also not quite sure what to think of another new advertising campaign from an Internet giant.

This time, it is coming from eBay (EBAY).

With the tagline, “Come to Think of It, eBay,” the ads start today, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal, to “boost its standing as a holiday shopping destination.”

Interestingly, the new marketing campaign in print, television and online–the first for the Web commerce giant in 18 months–has been crafted by San Francisco-based Goodby, Silverstein & Partners, which has also just nabbed the lead role in the $100 million advertising campaign by Yahoo (YHOO).

Goodby, owned by the Omnicom Group (OMC), is known for its innovative ideas and has done such memorable campaigns as the Slowsky turtles for Comcast (CMCSA), the weird folk of Emerald Nuts, owned by Diamond Foods (DMND)–as well as campaigns for tech companies such as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Adobe Systems (ADBE) and Netflix (NFLX).

Still, Goodby might be getting a little too cute here, because “Come to Think of It” could remind consumers exactly how much they have forgotten about eBay.

At best, “come to think of it” is a double-edged sword.

In a good scenario: “Come to think of it, I really haven’t listened to my ‘Frampton Comes Alive’ album in forever and I really want to hear it again.”

In a bad scenario: “An old girlfriend of mine is trying to friend me on Facebook–but, come to think of it, she was pretty freaky and I am very scared she found me again.”

You get the idea! Come to think of it: Play at home!

Actually, according to the Journal story, Lorrie Norrington, president of eBay’s marketplace operations, is pushing a different meaning of the phrase: “to shift the buyer perception of what eBay is today.”

The San Jose, Calif.-based company has to shift perceptions since it has seen its core marketplace business suffer, even as it has advertised less.

Here’s a video of one of the new ads, as well as some past ones–all of which include an unusual amount of Broadway-style singing, dancing and egregiously fabulous frolicking for a company led by then-CEO Meg Whitman.

But, come to think of it, Meg: Not that there’s anything wrong with that!

And, I could not resist adding at the end Weird Al Yankovic’s funny parody song about eBay, with video clips synched.

Enjoy:

In a shift that is sure to be much commented on by the advertising industry, Yahoo has tapped Goodby, Silverstein & Partners to take the lead for creative, advertising, digital marketing and strategic planning efforts.

The San Francisco-based Goodby, which is owned by the Omnicom Group (OMC), is known for its innovative ideas and has done such memorable campaigns as the Slowsky turtles for Comcast (CMCSA), the weird folk of Emerald Nuts, owned by Diamond Foods (DMND)–as well as campaigns for tech companies such as Hewlett-Packard (HPQ), Adobe Systems (ADBE) and Netflix (NFLX).

Also, of course, the terrifically memorable “Got Milk?” campaign.

Perhaps a “Got Yahoo?” campaign is in the future?

Until now, the top job of goosing Yahoo’s tarnished brand, as part of a recently launched $100 million marketing push, has been helmed by Ogilvy & Mather, a unit of the WPP Group (WPPGY).

While Goodby will lead on creative initiatives worldwide, Ogilvy will remain in the mix, Integrated Marketing and Brand Management SVP Penny Baldwin told BoomTown in an interview this afternoon, focusing on international marketing efforts, including all upcoming brand launches in France, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea, Brazil and Indonesia.

And, via it Neo and Mindshare units, Yahoo said, Ogilvy will also run all media buying for the Internet giant globally.

Yahoo (YHOO) is also keeping strategic branding firm Landor & Associates.

Goodby, Ogilvy and Landor will apparently form a Brand Advisory Board at Yahoo, run by Baldwin.

Baldwin stressed that the move was a broadening of its outside marketing advisers and was not a replacement of Ogilvy, or any indication that the current new marketing campaign needed to change.

She said internal reports on the effectiveness of the overall big theme, “It’s Y!ou,” launched last month, have been strong.

Nonetheless, Baldwin added that the new agency is sure to bring more ideas to the mix in the massive effort, which has included television, print, outdoor and online ads.

And, she noted, the location of Goodby’s HQ in San Francisco, not far from Yahoo’s Sunnyvale digs, was also a plus.

“Goodby has the caliber to serve worldwide needs,” said Baldwin. “And with the way the Web moves so fast, we thought it was also important to have deep resources locally.”

Up next, she added: to “root our brand strategy with more hard-hitting” messages about Yahoo.

“This is far more than just an advertising effort,” said Baldwin of Yahoo’s efforts to revitalize itself in the eyes of consumers–and, while she did not say so, to the digerati of Silicon Valley. “This is a business transformation.”

Here is Baldwin’s boss, Yahoo CMO Elisa Steele talking about the company’s marketing efforts of late in a video interview with Nicki Dugan on the company’s Yodel Anecdotal blog in a new feature called Yodelcast (sorry, Nicki, but it is simply too professional and unjiggly for BoomTown’s seal of approval):

And here are two examples of Goodby’s creatives–Comcast’s Slowskys and Robert Goulet for Emerald Nuts:

Is it just me or does it feel like the air is slowly seeping out of the energetic balloon blown up by Microsoft’s bold and quite unsolicited bid to acquire Yahoo?

Of course, just by bidding a few dollars more or not or walking away even, the software giant could sass things up a bit, as could an actual Yahoo alternative to what most agree will be its ultimate fate: Becoming Microsoft’s Silicon Valley satellite office, anti-Google division.

This kind of slowing down the pace to approximate the mood generated by those two Slowsky turtles who flack for Comcast is, of course, vintage Yahoo, which likes to take its sweet time doing pretty much everything of late.

But one problem with the drag-dragginess is that key talent continues to drift out of the company–witness the recent departure of Bradley Horowitz, who played the role of the entrepreneur’s best friend at Yahoo well.

While Horowitz is high-profile, I can tell you by the emails I am getting daily from Yahoos that a lot of them are contemplating the door.

That’s why, sources tell BoomTown, that Yahoo is preparing to hand out attractive retention packages for key talent, in order to hold onto them through this process, which would be especially important if Yahoo (YHOO) escapes Microsoft’s (MSFT) embrace.

It’s a prudent idea, of course, given Yahoo has to work hard to keep its current business going with all the takeover distractions surrounding it.

But, more interesting, sources said Yahoo’s plans also include even more juicy severance deals upon a change in control that would give some employees a nice cushion on the way out, either via Microsoft cuts or on their own volition. (Yahoo, by the way, said last week it would incur up to $25 million in charges related to its recent layoffs.)

In fact, upping the severance for current employees is exactly what Dow Jones (owner of this site) did right before the News Corp. (NWS) bid was accepted, handing over enhanced severance packages to 160 senior managers, in the event they were forced out after an acquisition.

In its government filings in June of 2007, Dow Jones said it did so because it “intended to enhance the company’s ability to retain and attract management-level employees.”

At the time, although Dow Jones said such a move was unrelated to any sale, many saw that move as a sign that it was getting ready for it. And, in fact, the company reached an agreement to be sold within 30 days.

So, even at a turtle’s pace, it might be a good idea, in Yahoo’s case, to follow the money.
