One More Thing: Apple’s New MacBook Air

Steve Jobs’s “one more thing” today at Apple’s Town Hall event was the new MacBook Air, or, as he put it, “what would happen if a MacBook hooked up with an iPad.” The quick details: Complete unibody construction, all solid state storage, and there are two models, each with two configurations: an 11.6-inch model with either 64 gb or 128 gb of storage for $999 or $1199, respectively, and a 13.3-inch model with either 128 or 256 gb of storage for $1299 or $1599, respectively.

With no fanfare whatsoever, Apple refreshed its entry-level MacBook this morning, swapping it out for a faster machine featuring longer battery life and a better video chip. With a 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, an Nvidia GeForce 320m graphics chip and 10 hours of battery life, the updated MacBook is similar in spec to the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

After nearly a year out of the public eye, Apple CEO Steve Jobs returned to it yesterday at the company’s annual music event. It was his first public appearance at an Apple gathering since Oct. 14, 2008, when he uncrated the company’s new unibody MacBooks, and it far overshadowed the new products he was about to announce. In fact, it could be argued that public confirmation of Jobs’s health since his return to the company was truly the most significant announcement of the day.

Next up, the new and expected 17-inch MacBook Pro. Before introducing it, Schiller notes that the MacBook has been the No. 1 notebook computer in the states. The new machine is largely as predicted. It boasts Apple’s new unibody chassis and a glass touch trackpad. At 6.6 pounds, it’s the world’s lightest notebook. It has a hi-res backlit display. “The best display we’ve ever shipped in a notebook,” says Schiller, with a 60 percent greater color gamut than other machines.
