The media have Midtown. The banks have Wall Street. Now tech companies are laying their foundation near Union Square.

The emergence of Union Square as a destination for technology firms got its start several years ago. But the neighborhood’s tech community received a boost this year with the arrival of household names such as computer giant Apple Inc. and the impending arrival of user-review site Yelp.

Those big companies are among nearly a dozen tech firms that have signed leases this year for a combined 135,000 square feet of office space in Union Square, according to the Union Square Partnership.

Music start-ups have been a money incinerator for a long time, but that doesn't stop investors from trying again. Here's the latest example, which I first wrote about back in October.

Music start-ups have been a money incinerator for a long time, but that doesn’t stop investors from trying again. Here’s the latest example, which I first wrote about back in October: SoundCloud, a German-based file-sharing service, has raised $10 million in a funding round led by Index Ventures and Union Square Ventures.

While lots of music services are still trying to figure out how to make money by distributing copyrighted music you’ve heard of, SoundCloud is taking a different tack. As I wrote last fall:

It’s designed to let professional and amateur musicians share their own music with each other and the public, via cloud-based files that the company hosts.

Once the tunes are on SoundCloud’s servers, the service makes it easy to move the stuff around the Web, via its own widget and an API that’s showing up on lots of interesting sites, apps, services and devices, including Facebook and Apple’s iPad. You can load SoundCloud files into Spotify, the streaming music company that Index has also invested in.

The service uses the freemium model, offering most of its capabilities for free, and charging up to $700 a year for more storage and extra features.

You can also use SoundCloud for less enlightened purposes, like sharing music you don’t own. But the company has recently implemented an audible “fingerprinting” service, like the ones Google’s YouTube uses, which allows copyright owners to take down files they don’t want on the Web. And that should give the company legal cover, unless the YouTube/Viacom case takes a very different turn.

In a blog post announcing the funding, SoundCloud says it will use the money to scale faster and “be more present in the US.” It also posts short clips, using its service, from its new investors–Index’s Mike Volpi and Union Square’s Fred Wilson.

Here’s Wilson:
Thoughts on SoundCloud by fredwilson.
And Volpi:
Mike Volpi Audio Blog on Friday morning by mvolpi.
And if you’d like something more entertaining, here’s a very long mix of classic hip-hop, via Cut Chemist:

Boxee hits a big milestone this week, when its very own Boxee Box hits the market. But that won't help the start-up pay its growing staff, which is why Avner Ronen is out raising a big round.

Boxee, which makes software that makes it easy to watch Web video on your TV, celebrates a big milestone this week, when the first Boxee-branded hardware starts shipping to consumers. The start-up is celebrating with an event at New York’s Irving Plaza.

But the company’s next big move likely won’t happen in public view: Sources say Boxee is out trying to raise a significant funding round, likely in the $10 million to $15 million range.

I’m told that existing investors Union Square, Spark and General Catalyst, which have helped Boxee raise $12 million to date, all plan to re-up, and will likely pick up half of the round. No word on who the new money is, or how close the round is to closing.

CEO Avner Ronen will need it sooner than later, though. His two-year-old company now has a significant payroll–33 people, at last count–and very little revenue coming in the door.

The new Boxee Boxes shipping this week won’t change that. Boxee isn’t trying to succeed by charging manufacturers like D-Link, which is making the devices, big licensing fees.

Instead, it’s trying to build a significant audience by getting its software on lots of hardware–TVs, Blu-ray players, game machines, etc.–and figure out a way to turn that into money down the line. Boxee is at 1.4 million users now, but that’s not nearly big enough. It wants Pandora- or Netflix-like scale.

This is an interesting time for Ronen to be out pitching: The existing TV industry is ripe for disruption. And the idea that consumers will watch Web video on their TV is moving from science fiction to reality, spurred on by the likes of Hulu, Netflix, Apple TV and now Google TV.

But Google TV’s mission–to merge Web video with traditional TV on one screen–is pretty much the same as Boxee’s. If Google figures it out, it would seem to crowd out the competition.

On the other hand, TV programmers who are wary of Google’s dominance might very well welcome multiple competitors. Which may be one of the reasons that Ronen is supposedly getting a much warmer reception from traditional TV executives than he used to get.

In other words, on-demand travel books, with a touch of humanity–an obvious and even innovative trend as custom printing gets cheaper.

But Sifry is also putting the guides on digital devices, like the Kindle from Amazon (AMZN).

Sifry, who also founded the blog search engine Technorati, talked to BoomTown about the business and gave me a quick tour of its HQ near Union Square.
