<p>According to sources close to the telecommunications giant, AT&#038;T is in discussions with the Chernin Group about mounting a joint bid to acquire the Hulu premium video site.</p>
<p>It makes sense &#8212; in addition to its core phone business, AT&#038;T also sells broadband and TV via its U-verse service. And, while well-funded, Chernin certainly could use the extra financial firepower in the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130529/what-if-hulu-really-isnt-for-sale-after-all/">multi-player competition to buy Hulu</a>.</p>
<p>Sources close the the owners have speculated recently that they expected more joint efforts in the sale of the unit, which is owned by News Corp., Disney and Comcast.</p>
<p>Already, several major players from various sides have expressed interest in Hulu since its trio of media owners decided to put it back on the block. Among the bidders: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130526/yahoos-bid-for-hulu-in-600m-to-800m-range-even-as-it-preps-other-big-deals-in-mobile-and-communications/">Yahoo</a>, DirecTV, Time Warner Cable, Guggenheim Partners, as well the Chernin Group.</p>
<p>The investment and media company is run by former News Corp. COO Peter Chernin, who was integral to the founding of Hulu and had intimate knowledge of how it operates. While his initial bid was in the lower $500 million range, sources familiar with the situation said it is likely to be higher as the auction for the site evolves.</p>
<p>Currently, all bids are non-binding, but Hulu is now winnowing them out in order to move to the next and more serious level of sale.</p>
<p>That said, sources also cautioned that it could turn out that no sale happens if the bids do not come in at levels about $1 billion.</p>

<p>Zynga confirmed <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130603/zynga-to-lay-off-520-employees-18-percent-of-staff-and-shutter-new-york-and-la-offices/">it was laying off 18 percent of its workforce</a> &#8212; which represents 520 employees &#8212; in a bid to reduce costs, as it seeks to drastically restructure its troubled business.</p>
<p>The move today will affect every part of the San Francisco social gaming company, cutting $80 million in staff costs for its 2,900 current workers. It will also include the closing of its offices in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas, as well as other infrastructure costs, adding to the total expense reduction.</p>
<p>Zynga continues to have big offices in San Francisco; Beijing, China; and Bangalore, India, as well as several small units across the U.S. (such as Seattle and San Diego).</p>
<p>Sources said that severance benefits will extend for several months and include some acceleration of stock options.</p>
<p>In addition, Zynga has <a href="http://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2013/06/03/551683/10034992/en/Zynga-Announces-Substantial-Cost-Reductions.html">now said in a press release</a> that it is downgrading its investor guidance for the second quarter with results at the lower end of what Wall Street has been expecting.</p>
<p>After a rocky IPO and trying to cope with rapid changes in its core businesses, Zynga has been trying to refocus the company&#8217;s franchises and network on the shift to mobile and a narrowing of focus at the company.</p>
<p>That refocusing will now have a big impact on Zynga&#8217;s financial performance. For Q2, the company had previously said its &#8220;bookings&#8221; &#8212; related to sales of in-game virtual-good purchases and advertising &#8212; would be in the $180 million to $190 million range. Today, Zynga said results would now be in the lower half of that range. </p>
<p>In addition, its GAAP net loss for the quarter will be higher than expected, rising from a loss of $26.5 million to $36.5 million to a loss of between $28.5 million and $39 million.</p>
<p>All other metrics are expected to remain the same, including: Revenue ($225 million to $235 million); earnings per share (a loss of three to five cents); adjusted EBITDA (break even to a loss of $10 millon); and non-GAAP EPS (a loss of three to four cents).</p>
<p>Wall Street is not reacting well to the bad news. Zynga&#8217;s shares have dropped from 11 to 12 percent since <strong>AllThingsD.com</strong> broke the news of the layoffs. It is now at about $3 a share, giving the company a market valuation of $2.4 billion. Trading for Zynga was briefly halted, before the company confirmed the cost cuts.  </p>

<p>Zynga is laying off 18 percent of its workforce &#8212; which represents 520 employees &#8212; in a bid to reduce costs and more drastically restructure its troubled business toward mobile, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>The move today will affect every part of the San Francisco social gaming company and cut $80 million in staff expenses. Zynga currently has about 2,900 workers.</p>
<p>But the action will also include the closing of its offices in New York, Los Angeles and Dallas, as well as the slashing of other major infrastructure costs, adding to a total reduction that is likely to be much larger.</p>
<p>Zynga continues to have big offices in San Francisco; Beijing, China; and Bangalore, India, as well as several small units across the U.S. (such as Seattle and San Diego).</p>
<p>Sources said that severance benefits will extend for several months and include some acceleration of stock options.</p>

<p>The reason? Mobile &#8212; a business Zynga must conquer, despite its currently smaller prospects for monetization compared to its Web business.</p>
<p>After a rocky IPO and trying to cope with rapid changes in its core businesses, Zynga now must refocus the company&#8217;s flagship franchises and network on the shift to mobile and a narrowing of focus at the company.</p>
<p>In other parlance, this is a &#8220;right-sizing&#8221; of Zynga to reflect a more somber reality that these mobile businesses are not as large as its Web-based one that rode the startup to glory on the explosive growth of social networks, primarily Facebook.</p>
<p>Sources said the reason for the more substantive cuts now, after earlier ones last fall, is because the decline of its Web business has been more drastic than anticipated, while the rise of its mobile business has been slower than needed. That&#8217;s been especially true on Facebook, which was once one of Zynga&#8217;s key money-making partners.</p>
<p>It has resulted in a perfect storm of trouble for Zynga, which has struggled with its business since its public offering, as investors have scrutinized the longevity of the hits-based online gaming business. Despite the continued strength of some of its big properties, such as FarmVille, the life cycle of most casual games has been short.</p>
<p>Zynga has tried to fix the situation by moving to the faster-growing mobile space. In addition, CEO and founder Mark Pincus has tried to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130404/zynga-rejiggers-comp-in-a-bid-to-retain-top-execs-and-tie-to-performance/">solidify its top management</a>, as well as bring in more <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130405/kleiners-doerr-joins-zynga-board-of-directors/">board help</a>, to strengthen efforts to revive the company.</p>
<p>Zynga has already been on the cost-cutting path, closing less successful games and other more ambitious products that had enjoyed less than expected traction. For example, the company has &#8220;sunsetted&#8221; 18 games in recent months, as it has deployed more resources and development to mobile efforts.</p>

<p>According to sources close to the situation, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is working on what is likely to turn into a significant restructuring of the massive software company, which could also move several current execs to more prominent roles.</p>
<p>Sources noted that the changes &#8212; which center on solidifying Microsoft into the &#8220;devices and services company&#8221; that Ballmer wrote about in his annual shareholder letter last October &#8212; are still being worked out, and could still change substantively.</p>
<p>But, noted several people close to the situation, the new configuration could include larger roles for several execs, including Satya Nadella, president of its Servers and Tools division; Tony Bates, president of its Skype communications division; and Don Mattrick, president of its Interactive Entertainment division.</p>
<p>How their new and perhaps expanded roles and those of others in top management will shake out is unclear.</p>
<p>What seems likely is an organizational structure that will focus on configuring Microsoft around devices and services, both in the enterprise and the consumer space, and simplifying its management. Currently, Microsoft has a rather convoluted set-up, with other major units such as Business Solutions, Online Services and Microsoft Office.</p>
<p>But how Microsoft&#8217;s flagship software product, Windows, fits into the new org is still under debate.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.microsoft.com/investor/reports/ar12/shareholder-letter/index.html">Wrote Ballmer</a> about the changes for Microsoft last fall: &#8220;This is a significant shift, both in what we do and how we see ourselves &#8212; as a devices and services company. It impacts how we run the company, how we develop new experiences, and how we take products to market for both consumers and businesses.&#8221;</p>
<p>The possible restructuring comes amid increasing investor pressure on Microsoft and, interestingly, a recent run-up in its stock.</p>
<p>Nomura Equity Research analyst Rick Sherlund, who has covered the company since it went public, wrote last week that &#8220;there may be a shift in the wind upcoming for Microsoft, with shareholders potentially demanding a greater say in the direction of the company and how it might be run to drive a better return to shareholders.&#8221; In his note, Sherlund recommended that Microsoft consider selling off its Bing search business, as well as its Xbox gaming unit.</p>
<p>This focus on shareholder returns has again come into sharper relief since it was disclosed that ValueAct Capital had bought about 1 percent of Microsoft&#8217;s stock, and Sherlund noted that this stake could allow the hedge fund to push for change &#8220;with the support of others to advance their agenda for change.&#8221;</p>
<p>But unlike a more pugnacious previous effort to spur change at Microsoft by Greenlight Capital&#8217;s David Einhorn, ValueAct&#8217;s Jeff Ubben has been more dulcet in his tone, noting that Microsoft&#8217;s strong software background and enterprise strength was key when combined with future trends, such as cloud computing.</p>
<p>&#8220;Microsoft could be the largest cloud company in the world,&#8221; Ubben said in a recent speech.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s an open question still, but investors are certainly warming to Microsoft, after a long period of weak stock performance. Interestingly, over the last six months, Microsoft shares have risen more than 31 percent, perhaps in anticipation of some change to come.</p>
<p>A Microsoft spokesman declined to comment.</p>

<p>Yahoo&#8217;s design chief, the effervescent <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/tim-parsey/0/20b/88b">Tim Parsey</a>, will be leaving his job at the Silicon Valley Internet giant, sources said.</p>
<p>As SVP of User Experience Design at Yahoo, which centralized the task under Parsey, he has been part of a range of redesigns of its major properties, including its homepage, Flickr photo-sharing site, email and more.</p>
<p>As I noted when <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110330/yahoo-hires-tim-parsey-as-head-ux-designer/">Parsey arrived in early 2011</a>, &#8220;in the 67-ring circus that has been Yahoo&#8217;s product organization, design was widely dispersed.&#8221;</p>
<p>Translation: It was not pretty, unless you enjoyed the Web stylings of 1997.</p>
<p>Parsey certainly had the cred in the design industry, with stints at Apple, Microsoft&#8217;s entertainment and devices unit, Mattel and Motorola. Just before Yahoo, he was a principal at a Seattle-based design firm called shiftalliance.</p>
<p>The British native ran Apple&#8217;s design studio for five years in the early 1990s and was the main dude behind Motorola&#8217;s freaky V70 switchblade mobile phone in 2001.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s not clear why he is leaving now, or where the crackerjack designer is headed. But, amid a lot of Yahoo turmoil since he arrived, Parsey certainly stabilized the design culture at the company. </p>
<p>Also in play, according to numerous sources: New Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has a very &#8220;hands-on&#8221; style with regard to design &#8212; she pretty much considers herself the last and only stop on that train, among others, based on her experience at Google running a number of products including its pristine and much acclaimed search box. No surprise, then, she has involved herself strongly in the design process.</p>
<p>On his <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/tim-parsey/0/20b/88b">LinkedIn profile</a>, which still lists him as working at Yahoo, Parsey talked about his ethos of design there:</p>
<p>&#8220;This is about weaving a global UX and UER organization from the existing 200+ designers and researchers that today support an array of different businesses. It&#8217;s part of a rather cool broader corporate transition project. It&#8217;s also very much about establishing design as a potent, world-class entity that&#8217;s fun to be part of.&#8221;</p>
<p>He also notes: &#8220;These days I&#8217;m very excited about the correlation between internal cultures that are truly &#8216;meaningful&#8217; to designers ( and other functions ), and world-class design innovation.&#8221;</p>

<p>In a key hire, Jawbone said today that it had hired Mindy Mount, a top corporate VP at Microsoft, as its president.</p>
<p>The move by the San Francisco-based maker of wireless, music and wearable devices is part of what has been a major upgrading of its management and board. Recently, Jawbone added Yahoo CEO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130425/exclusive-yahoos-marissa-mayer-officially-joins-jawbone-board/">Marissa Mayer</a> and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130430/along-with-mayer-jawbone-set-to-announce-warner-musics-wiesenthal-will-join-board/">Rob Wiesenthal</a> of Warner Music as directors. </p>
<p>Jawbone has also recently done a big acquisition &#8212; purchasing <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130430/jawbone-acquires-bodymedia-for-more-than-100-million-as-wearable-tech-gets-more-intense/">BodyMedia</a>, a wearable health and fitness company, for $100 million. The move comes just a couple months after it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130204/jawbone-acqhires-data-and-digital-design-firms-massive-health-visere/">bought data and digital-design companies Massive Health and Visere</a>.</p>
<p>All this expansion requires tight organizational efforts and Mount has a lot of financial and operational experience, having held several key jobs at the software giant. She was most recently corporate VP and CFO at Microsoft&#8217;s Online Services Division, which includes Bing, MSN and Microsoft Advertising. Before that she held a similar job at the Entertainment and Devices Division, which has the Xbox, Zune and Windows Phone units.  </p>
<p>Previous to that, Mount ran AOL&#8217;s U.K. unit, worked in strategy at Time Warner and also was an exec at Morgan Stanley. She has an MBA from the Harvard Graduate School of Business and an undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.</p>
<p>In an interview today, Mount said that what attracted her to Jawbone was the challenge of scaling the fast-growth company, which is helmed by CEO and co-founder Hosain Rahman. </p>
<p>&#8220;Right out of the block, I&#8217;ll be spending time on business operations, since the scale and scope and complexity of Jawbone has really increased,&#8221; she said. &#8220;What really attracted me to the role is that it is a really meaty one &#8230; It&#8217;s a company with great products, where I can come in and have real impact, because consumer electronics companies really have to execute.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jawbone products include Jawbone wireless headsets, Jambox speakers and the Up personal fitness wristbands. The company has raised a lot of funding, totaling about $210 million from such venture firms as Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures, Kleiner Perkins and Sequoia Capital, as well as Deutsche Telekom, investor Yuri Milner and others.</p>

<p>Shashi Seth, former top product exec at Yahoo, has joined the Tribune Company as president of Tribune Digital Ventures, according to sources.</p>
<p>He will be reporting to CEO Peter Liguori and based in Silicon Valley, apparently to set up a brand new digital arm of the Chicago-based media company.</p>
<p>Sources said TDV would seek to invest in, buy and partner with innovative startups, not unlike the Comcast Ventures unit of the cable giant, which is run by Amy Banse.</p>
<p>Seth ran a wide variety of product groups for Yahoo &#8212; the last as SVP of its Connections division &#8212; and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130115/yahoo-connections-svp-shashi-seth-is-out/">left in January</a>, some months after new CEO Marissa Mayer took over.</p>
<p>Seth had been in charge of a swath of key products at Yahoo including Yahoo Mail, the Flickr photo-sharing service and many others.</p>
<p>Previous to Yahoo, Seth also worked at Google and AOL.</p>

<p>According to numerous sources close to the situation, Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer recently met with top execs at Hulu, the premium video service whose big media company owners have been considering selling it for some months. </p>
<p>Sources said Yahoo is &#8220;in the process,&#8221; although the Silicon Valley Internet giant has not made any kind of formal bid. Other players whom sources said are considering purchasing all or parts of Hulu include: Former News Corp. COO <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130405/peter-chernin-wants-hulu-too/">Peter Chernin</a>, who now has a successful and well-funded multimedia and investment company called the Chernin Group; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130325/hulu-isnt-for-sale-yet-but-buyers-are-asking/">Guggenheim Partners</a> digital arm, which is led by former Yahoo interim CEO Ross Levinsohn; and Amazon. </p>
<p>Sources said Mayer also had an extensive getting-to-know-you meeting, which was apparently not held at Hulu&#8217;s offices in Santa Monica, Calif., along with COO Henrique De Castro. The discussion is taking place in the wake of Yahoo&#8217;s <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130430/yahoo-scraps-deal-for-french-video-site/">failed bid</a> &#8212; largely engineered by De Castro &#8212; to purchase a majority stake in France Télécom&#8217;s Dailymotion video service, after a top French government official said Yahoo could not own 75 percent of the company. </p>
<p>Had the deal &#8212; which was reportedly valued at $300 million &#8212; gone through, it would have been the most significant by Mayer since she took over at the company last July. Thus far, she has limited her purchases to small mobile startup.</p>
<p>While the meetings with Hulu are only preliminary, Yahoo has been to this video rodeo before, having seriously considering buying Hulu when it was previously being shopped by its owners, News Corp., Disney and Comcast. (News Corp. also owns this site.)</p>
<p>Of course, if Yahoo&#8217;s interest becomes more serious, Mayer will have to make important visits to top execs at those media giants, since they control the rights to critical content, and thus Hulu&#8217;s value.</p>
<p>As Peter Kafka noted in a previous post about Hulu&#8217;s possible sale, &#8220;much hinges on the licensing rights News Corp., Disney and Comcast would provide for the money-losing site, as well as what happens to the $300 million debt its owners have taken on in the last year.&#8221;</p>
<p>Without those rights, Hulu by itself is a very pretty Web site and video platform, but not worth the billions it would be with very long-term television rights, content that attracts users. Currently, sources said its media owners are offering two to three years of rights, with a lot of flexibility over removing content from the site, which is not quite as attractive a deal (to say the least). </p>
<p>But video is a key component of Yahoo&#8217;s strategy going forward. Along with mobile efforts, Mayer has explicitly told investors that video was a key to company under her tenure.</p>
<p>Coincidentally, today in an onstage interview at a Wired conference in New York, Mayer broadly addressed the video issue when asked a question about the topic, noting it was important across all of Yahoo&#8217;s properties. </p>
<p>&#8220;I think video is really important &#8230; video is something that we&#8217;re all innately designed and born to experience, everyone is born being able to watch and to hear,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Video is just this amazing format.&#8221;</p>
<p>Mayer would know that well, having been at Google when the search giant bought YouTube, ironically snatching it at the last minute from a competing bid by Yahoo, which was then led by Terry Semel. Since then, YouTube has become the most important and powerful player in the space by far.</p>
<p>Yahoo, despite being one of the largest video players on the Web, has mostly been a lackluster competitor in the arena, pinging over the years from creating original content to doing branded deals with media companies, but never establishing a major beachhead with consumers as Hulu did from scratch.</p>
<p>Short of a full acquisition, there may be a way for Yahoo to partner and invest in Hulu, instead of buying it outright that works for all sides &#8212; owners get a new owner to foot part of the bill and also increase distribution, and Yahoo can claim that it&#8217;s providing users with exponentially more content that would help Yahoo&#8217;s long-declining engagement problem.</p>
<p>Sources said News Corp. and Disney have mulled scenarios where one or both companies hang on to the site, while Comcast has no control over Hulu&#8217;s fate, having given up its management rights to the site as a concession to federal regulators.</p>
<p>But the strength of the Hulu brand is clear and it has had some success in building a more significant business. While a lot of its video offerings are free, about <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130430/hulus-pitch-to-advertisers-4-million-people-pay-us-to-see-your-ads/">four million people are paying for a Hulu Plus subscription</a>.</p>
<p>Still, Hulu&#8217;s strength might be lagging, especially given after talented founding leader Jason Kilar recently left. Last year, Hulu <a href="ttp://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2012/5/comScore_Releases_April_2012_U.S._Online_Video_Rankings">was a top 10 video site</a>, according to comScore. No longer &#8212; <a href="http://www.comscore.com/Insights/Press_Releases/2013/4/comScore_Releases_March_2013_U.S._Online_Video_Rankings">in a report in March</a>, it had dropped out of the top 10. </p>
<p>While this likely has more to do with methodology than real decline in Hulu ratings, it does show that while it&#8217;s the biggest thing Yahoo could buy or invest in, Yahoo itself has plenty of video views, many more than Hulu. </p>
<p>The question for Mayer then is how much of Yahoo&#8217;s multi-billon-dollar cash kitty she wants to bet on a big video play. She might also be considering buying several smaller ones, said sources, with Yahoo having also looked at some smaller video sites, including Blip and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130308/heres-a-marissa-mayer-ma-candidate-you-havent-heard-of/">Grab Media</a>.</p>
<p>A spokeswoman for Hulu declined to comment and Yahoo PR has not responded to a query for comment (if ever). </p>

<p>Demand Media, the online content company, said it had earned nine cents on an adjusted basis in the first quarter, on revenues of $100.6 million, topping Wall Street estimates of eight cents on $99.6 million in sales. On a fully diluted basis, earnings were one cent a share, or $700,000, compared to a loss of two cents, or $1.8 million, in the three months compared to a year ago.</p>
<p>&#8220;Strong growth from our owned &#038; operated content and media properties drove our Q1 results, highlighting the unique capabilities of our content discovery, creation and distribution platform. Further, we accelerated our paid content strategy with the acquisition of Creativebug, a premier online destination for arts and crafts instruction, which will provide our large eHow crafts audience with an expanded learning experience. In addition, we signed up over 400 resellers to our new gTLD tools and received more than two million expressions of interest for domains to be registered with new gTLDs,&#8221; said Richard Rosenblatt, chairman and CEO of Demand Media in a statement. &#8220;We are excited about the distinct long-term growth opportunities for both of our businesses.&#8221;</p>
<p>Demand&#8217;s eHow site seems to have driven a lot of the gains in the content area.</p>
<p>Demand shares rose in trading yesterday by close to two percent, to close at $8.58, also its stock is down 7.6 percent for the year. </p>
<p>The company did not mention the <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130219/demand-media-splits-in-two-spinning-off-domain-registrar-business-from-media-unit/">planned split of its registar and content business</a> that it announced in the last quarter in the current results, which might be covered on the conference call the Santa Monica, Calif. company will have with analysts at 2 pm PT.</p>
<p>In its last earnings release for the fourth quarter, Demand said it was spinning off its domain registrar business from its media one in a bid to better clarify the company to investors.</p>
<p>Since it went public several years ago, there has been some level of difficulty for each part of Demand to easily explain itself to Wall Street, given the very different natures of its key &#8212; but very different &#8212; revenue units. In a statement at the time, Demand said that it was &#8220;our intent to spin off our registrar business and separate into two independent, publicly traded companies.&#8221;</p>
<p>The company noted that the two units &#8220;divergent strategic priorities and opportunities&#8221; would be better in the new configuration with a pure-play media company and domain services company. At the time, the company said the transaction was expected to take place in the next nine to 12 months, although it required a number of company and regulatory approvals to do the tax-free spin-off to create two different stocks.</p>
<p>In a different kind of transaction, Demand <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120428/the-1-2-billion-inside-story-of-how-demand-almost-went-private-this-week-and-then-didnt/">had talked a little more than a year ago to a private equity company about taking the company private</a>. The effort was abandoned, in which Boston-based Thomas H. Lee Partners would have purchased Demand for a price of up to $1.2 billion, due to a number of challenges. Its current market valuation is now about $744 million.</p>

<p>According to sources, Facebook has moved well-regarded exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100910/exclusive-facebook-snatches-another-google-ad-exec-this-is-getting-ridonkulous/">Emily White</a> to a new job as director of business operations at its Instagram mobile photo-sharing unit.</p>
<p>In this capacity, she will work with Instagram head and co-founder Kevin Systrom to scale nascent efforts to expand partnerships, improve user operations and, presumably, come up with ways to make some money. The fast-growing service, which the social networking site bought a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120409/facetagram-instabook-whatever-you-call-it-all-your-photo-are-belong-to-facebook-for-1-billion/">year ago in a billion-dollar mega-deal</a>, has been popular with consumers, but it has not focused as much on its business operations.</p>
<p>(<strong>Update</strong>: Facebook confirmed the move and also released this statement from Systrom: &#8220;I&#8217;m excited to bring Emily White onto the Instagram team. As we continue to scale our operation to support over 100 million active users, her experience with partnerships and business operations will play a major role in our future success.&#8221;)</p>
<p>In fact, related to business, it has waded more into controversy &#8212; such as when changes to its terms of service suggested that Instagram could sell user photos to advertisers, a change that was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130115/instagrams-updated-user-agreement-goes-into-effect-this-week/">quickly rescinded</a> by Systrom. That said, it <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121220/instagram-walks-back-ad-language-but-leaves-the-door-open/">left the door open to selling advertising</a> of some sort on the app. </p>
<p>White has a lot of experience in the online ad space in smoothing out and organizing ops, both at Google &#8212; where she previously worked &#8212; and at Facebook, where she started in the deal-making arena and later worked on mobile partnerships. </p>
<p>White &#8212; who has recently been courted by other Internet startups, reportedly including scrapbooking phenom Pinterest &#8212; is also on the board of women&#8217;s yoga and running gear retailer Lululemon. That&#8217;s good since part of her new job will be to get more big brands integrated into Instagram, which has already begun to do that with some initial level of success. </p>
<p>Systrom will continue to focus more on product development and overall strategy and vision, which he has done since Instagram was purchased last April. </p>

<p>Zynga CIO Debra Chrapaty, who has also done high-ranking stints at other big companies such as Cisco and Microsoft, has been named CEO of enterprise cloud storage company Nirvanix. </p>
<p>She replaces Dru Borden, who will remain at the San Diego-based company as SVP of planning and development and who will also remain a director. Chrapaty will also remain executive chairwoman of the board of Nirvanix, which has investments from Khosla Ventures and Intel Capital. </p>
<p>Chrapaty has most recently been CIO of Zynga, but was also SVP of Cisco&#8217;s collaboration software unit and was a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20090920/top-microsoft-infrastructure-exec-chrapaty-heads-to-cisco/">corporate VP at Microsoft</a>. She was also president and COO of E*Trade Technologies. </p>
<p>In an email to me, Chrapaty wrote: &#8220;I had a great run at Zynga, wish the company and the team the best. But this is a really unique opportunity to leverage a company that is at the center of unstoppable trends (to cloud which hasn&#8217;t really affected Fortune 1000 storage yet) and a company that already has some great existing people and customers and investors you have known for decades.&#8221;</p>
<p>Zynga has seen a number of high-level departures and top management reorgs in recent months, as it seeks to turn around its recent rocky performance. </p>
<p>Zynga said that Chrapaty, who was <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20110407/zynga-hires-former-cisco-exec-to-be-chief-information-officer/">hired from Cisco in 2011</a>, will be replaced by Zynga exec Dorion Carroll. </p>
<p>&#8220;We thank Debra for her leadership and contributions to Zynga over the past years and wish her luck in her future endeavors,&#8221; said Zynga COO David Ko in a statement. &#8220;As one of our Zynga Fellows, Dorion has provided direction, leadership and management across numerous technology and products teams at Zynga over the past three years as well as being one of our most senior technology leaders.&#8221;</p>

<p>It&#8217;s not clear where Sharma &#8212; who has been at the Silicon Valley Internet giant since 2009 and has worked in a number of areas, including commerce and search &#8212; is going or what the reasons are for his departure from Yahoo.</p>
<p>Some sources said he clashed with CEO Marissa Mayer, who has been involved in the recent overhaul of one of Yahoo&#8217;s key consumer products, due in part to <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130110/that-yahoo-mail-vulnerability-not-really-fixed/">recent issues related to email vulnerability</a> and other issues. But others said he simply wanted to move on and has a new job lined up already.</p>
<p>There are several other top Yahoo execs who are likely to go in the coming weeks, especially given many bonuses are awarded this month. Mayer has also been looking over her top management and wider workforce and culling it, sometimes in ways that attract <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130222/physically-together-heres-the-internal-yahoo-no-work-from-home-memo-which-extends-beyond-remote-workers/">national controversy</a> and even a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130304/former-top-yahoo-ad-exec-sues-yahoo-accusing-it-of-trying-to-cheat-him-over-acquisition-compensation/">lawsuit</a>.</p>
<p>Keeping talent and finding new blood has been an issue for the fledgling CEO. As I have previously reported, as well as <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/03/12/us-yahoo-hiring-idUSBRE92B06R20130312">others in more detail</a> this week, she is approving all new hires herself and has put in place more stringent hiring standards at Yahoo.</p>
<p>Sources said she has been trying to convince a top product exec at Google to essentially replace <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130115/yahoo-connections-svp-shashi-seth-is-out/">Shashi Seth</a> &#8212; with whom she parted ways in January &#8212; who would oversee Mail, Answers, Messenger, the homepage and possibly the media group.</p>
<p>In addition, her COO Henrique De Castro has a <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130306/wanted-yahoo-on-the-lookout-for-new-ross-levinsohn-oops-americas-head/">search out for a new head of the key Americas unit</a> to man its important sales division and more in the U.S. market.</p>
<p>In other words, a lot of empty desks that need filling.</p>

<p>Well-known digital media exec Zander Lurie has been hired by former Yahoo exec Ross Levinsohn to become one of his key lieutenants at Guggenheim Digital Media.</p>
<p>Lurie will be an EVP there, where he will help manage and grow the new heavily funded digital unit of Guggenheim Partners, whose current media assets include Billboard, the Hollywood Reporter, Adweek, the Clio Awards, Film Expo Group and the digital extensions for Dick Clark Productions.</p>
<p>Lurie was most recently an exec at CBS, including as SVP of strategic development, where he worked on a number of key digital initiatives. He was CFO and head of business development for CBS Interactive and also worked on M&#038;A at its CNET tech news unit. Lurie <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120508/cbs-key-strategic-and-digitally-inclined-exec-lurie-departs/">left the media giant in May</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;The opportunity to join Guggenheim Digital Media and work alongside Ross was a no-brainer,&#8221; wrote Lurie to me in an email. &#8220;We have high-quality, trusted brands in the portfolio and an appetite to grow our position in the premium content/video landscape.&#8221;</p>
<p>Expect more acquisitions now that the deal-making Lurie is joining the deal-making Levinsohn and there&#8217;s a pile of dough to spend. </p>
<p>Lurie is the first significant hire by Levinsohn, who became <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20130115/former-yahoo-boss-ross-levinsohn-has-a-new-gig-and-a-digital-ma-warchest/">CEO of GDM last month</a>. He had been interim CEO of Yahoo, but lost that job when the Silicon Valley Internet giant hired former Google exec Marissa Mayer.</p>
<p>Michel Protti, who worked with Levinsohn at Yahoo as his chief of staff, is also joining GDM as SVP. Before Yahoo, Protti worked at McKinsey &#038; Company.</p>

<p>Demand Media said today that it planned to split its company in two parts, spinning off its domain registrar business from its media one in a bid to better clarify the company to investors.</p>
<p>Since it went public several years ago, there has been some level of difficulty for  each part of the Santa Monica, Calif.-based Demand to easily explain itself to Wall Street, given the very different natures of its key &#8212; but very different &#8212; revenue units.</p>
<p>In a statement, Demand said that it was &#8220;our intent to spin off our registrar business and separate into two independent, publicly traded companies.&#8221; </p>
<p>The company noted that the two units &#8220;divergent strategic priorities and opportunities&#8221; would be better in the new configuration with a pure-play media company and domain services company. </p>
<p>The transaction is expected to take place in the next nine to 12 months, Demand said. But it still requires a number of company and regulatory approvals to do the tax-free spin-off that will create two different stocks.</p>
<p>The move makes a lot of sense on many levels, given the company&#8217;s two divisions have not coalesced in any way that has made much sense to investors.</p>
<p>As part of today&#8217;s announcement, Demand also released its fourth-quarter earnings.</p>
<p>Minus traffic acquisition costs, the company&#8217;s revenue for the three months was up 19 percent to $96.8 million, on net income of 12 cents of adjusted earnings per share. </p>

<p>About two weeks ago, I heard about a restructuring under HBO SVP of consumer technology Otto Berkes, who also takes over the job of CTO in March from longtime vet Bob Zitter. The former Microsoft exec and Xbox co-founder was named the top tech figure at the premium cable network at the end of last year, after being the primary developer of its popular HBO Go and MAX Go streaming video offerings.</p>
<p>As part of the changes, the memo of the Time Warner unit said, product strategy and development exec Hans Deutmeyer is leaving HBO.</p>
<p>HBO has been very active in the digital space, increasingly offering its shows on a variety of mobile devices. Earlier this week, at our <strong>D: Dive Into Media</strong> conference, HBO said its subscribers will be able to stream programming from an Apple iPhone or iPad onto their television via AirPlay.</p>
<p>All the various details are below, in a memo HBO sent to its employees at the end of January:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>HBO GO has established HBO as a company that understands the value of technology as a tool for delivering great content and experiences to consumers, and HBO.com has become a primary means of driving broad consumer engagement and awareness of our offerings. We are proud of these achievements and also recognize that we have more ahead of us to accomplish. Over the course of the next several years, our mission is to build best-in-class technology execution capabilities. That mission is central to ensuring that HBO has the tools available to support our business through the ongoing technology-based disruption of media and to support new areas of growth. Like other leading Internet-based video service providers, we will design, build, and deploy scalable products with global reach.</p>
<p>Achieving these goals will require focus and a disciplined approach. Roles and responsibilities must be clear and well-defined to ensure efficient distribution of work and smooth collaboration between groups and people. In order to provide the organizational framework needed to achieve our goals, I am restructuring Digital Products around four functional groups (listed alphabetically):</p>
<p>1. Infrastructure Operations &#038; QA,<br />
2. Program Management,<br />
3. Software Engineering,<br />
4. User Experience &#038; Product Design. </p>
<p>Each of these groups will have responsibilities for both HBO GO and HBO.com as appropriate for the functional areas of each group. This will enable more efficient end-to-end integration and coordination of our design, platform architecture, and infrastructure development.</p>
<p>The attached &#8220;Digital Products Organizational Pillars&#8221; slide illustrates the roles and responsibilities of each of these four functional groups in greater detail. The leaders of these groups will report directly to me and will continue to do so after my transition to the CTO role.</p>
<p>Donna Stalworth will continue to head up the infrastructure operations and QA efforts in Digital Products. She will also add build and release management to her responsibilities.</p>
<p>Rebekah Calabrese will be stepping into the role of VP of Program Management for Digital Products. She and her team will be responsible for cross-group coordination, project management, budget management, technology vendor relationships, and overall status communication for Digital Products. Rebekah will also continue to provide contract support for Digital Products as well as the other technology groups. Her team will consist of the existing Digital Products program and project management staff and her current reports.</p>
<p>Drew Angeloff will lead all of Digital Products&#8217; software engineering activities in New York as well as in Seattle. Centralizing consumer software engineering in one group under one leader will maximize coordination and the flow of information, and will help ensure a consistent and robust software architecture. This is especially important given geographic distance between the New York and Seattle teams. The engineering staff working on device application development and the GO service currently on Rob Caruso’s team will now report to Drew.</p>
<p>Rob Caruso and the workflow team led by Jason Kui will transition to Diane Tryneski’s organization; Rob will report to Diane. Rob&#8217;s new charter is to build software engineering capabilities to optimize digital asset creation, management, and security, and to create technologies that unlock the full potential of software in the digital content area. Rob and his team will collaborate closely with Digital Products to ensure that our digital content technologies and our consumer-facing products inform each other to enable unique and innovative content-driven user experiences. This new role and group will be critical to achieving end-to-end software technology excellence.</p>
<p>Dina Juliano will lead the User Experience &#038; Product Design organization. Her team’s responsibilities will include HBO GO, HBO.com, and HBO On Demand. Dina&#8217;s team will conceive, design, and realize new digital experiences in partnership with key stakeholders across HBO. She and her team will incorporate consumer and market insights to create a coherent product vision and roadmap that engages our users. Dina&#8217;s team will consist of her existing team and the groups formerly in Hans Deutmeyer&#8217;s organization. </p>
<p>Hans has decided to leave HBO to pursue opportunities that better align with his future interests. Hans has been a part of the HBO GO story since its genesis and has played a key role in bringing it to the market successfully. Given the new organizational direction, he has decided that this is the right time for him to pursue other opportunities. I want to thank Hans for his contributions and wish him success in his new endeavors.</p>
<p>Please welcome Donna, Rebekah, Drew, Rob, and Dina in their new roles. The changes in their teams and roles are effective immediately.</p>

<p>Hearst Ventures, the investment arm of media giant Hearst Corporation, said it was making a minority equity investment in Science, the Los Angeles area tech &#8220;studio.&#8221;</p>
<p>Privately held Hearst is the sole investor in the new funding, although the company declined to reveal financial terms of the investment.</p>
<p>But sources with awareness of the deal said it was close to $30 million for a stake above 20 percent.</p>
<p>Somewhat akin to a startup accelerator, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120404/l-a-stories-mike-jones-and-peter-pham-talk-about-the-science-of-tech-studios/">Science</a> is attempting to quickly create and scale a number of promising companies in a variety of areas, and has launched 13 so far. </p>
<p>Among the Santa Monica, Calif., tech studio&#8217;s recent efforts: <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121101/dollar-shave-club-carves-off-another-9-8m-to-take-business-international/">Dollar Shave Club</a>, a subscription-based products company aimed at men; Ellie, which sells high-end activewear for women; and <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120404/l-a-stories-mike-jones-and-peter-pham-talk-about-the-science-of-tech-studios/">Wittlebee</a>, a clothes club for kids. </p>
<p>Hearst Ventures is operated by Hearst&#8217;s Entertainment and Syndication unit, which is run by Scott Sassa and George Kliavkoff. Kliavkoff will join Science&#8217;s board of directors. </p>
<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s clear to us that, while we have these brands that resonate with consumers, we think there are some learnings we can get from these guys that are hard to get in a big company,&#8221; said Sassa. &#8220;Being able to be nimble with insight and guidance is important for us.&#8221;</p>
<p>Kliavkoff also noted that this was a way to get immediate ownership in a range of promising companies. &#8220;We are writing one check and will have an immediate stake in more than a dozen great startups,&#8221; he said. &#8220;[Science] has been very thoughtful in starting companies in smart areas.&#8221;</p>

<p>In a statement, Hearst CEO Frank Bennack said: &#8220;Hearst is continually looking for smart investments that bring value and intelligence to the company &#8212; our investment in Science does both. We&#8217;re excited to partner with Science to continue its trajectory of success, gain meaningful industry knowledge and utilize Science&#8217;s platforms for current and future Hearst investments.&#8221;</p>
<p>Though quieter than most, Hearst Ventures have made many successful investments over 15 years, including in Netscape and Broadcast.com. More recently, it has funded such companies as Brightcove and Pandora, as well as HootSuite and BuzzFeed.</p>
<p>Science was founded in late 2011 &#8212; with $10 million funding from big-name investors including Google Chairman Eric Schmidt&#8217;s Tomorrow Ventures, Rustic Canyon Partners and White Star Capital. Its CEO is well-regarded entrepreneur Mike Jones, who was most recently CEO of Myspace. Prior to Myspace, he had started and sold Userplane to AOL in 2006. In addition, well-known entrepreneur <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20111121/former-color-co-founder-peter-pham-heads-to-former-myspace-ceos-l-a-tech-studio/">Peter Pham</a> is chief business officer at Science.</p>
<p>&#8220;I am very proud of work that the Science team has accomplished since launching,&#8221; said Jones, in a quick interview tonight (short enough so that his wife would not get angry at me for ruining Valentine&#8217;s Day). &#8220;I am extremely excited about opportunities for Science companies going forward.&#8221;</p>

<p>As <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121210/in-seismic-shift-new-coo-de-castro-shifts-yahoo-ad-sales-to-category-model-backed-by-the-marissa-halo/">I had previously reported</a>, Yahoo&#8217;s key business unit &#8212; its advertising sales force &#8212; is now getting details of a reorganization by its new leader, COO Henrique De Castro.</p>
<p>In making the changes, just weeks ahead of Yahoo&#8217;s annual sales conference in Las Vegas on Jan. 21, De Castro is borrowing rather heavily from the set-up of the powerful ad business at Google, from whence he came.</p>
<p>By shifting the sales organization to a &#8220;category&#8221; model, sales reps at the Silicon Valley Internet giant will sell all of Yahoo&#8217;s ad products, as well as its search offerings, across channels in a vertical process organized around advertiser segments, such as automotive, entertainment and packaged goods.</p>
<p>Yahoo has long sold its advertising in a regional and tiered organization against premium and performance inventory in display and search, designed to avoid vertical conflict. Thus, the sales staff have built up advertiser relationships across many areas, which will not work in the new system.</p>
<p>Sources inside the company said regional leaders will now be shifted to running various verticals. There will be support specialists for those areas, too. </p>
<p>Mark Ellis, who was most recently VP of North American sales and global partnerships, will pay a key role in the new org, said sources. It is not clear, though, what role Peter Foster, who has headed audience advertising, will play. Another high-ranking exec, Keith Kaplan, has apparently been shifted to focus on agency relationships.</p>
<p>As I had previously written, there are many different ways to organize sales, but making such major change has potentially large ramifications on Yahoo&#8217;s financial performance, at least in the short term, since advertising makes up the bulk of its revenue.</p>
<p>According to numerous sources inside Yahoo, the changes are causing some measure of worry and confusion across the salesforce at the company, since it comes after a lot of wrenching changes over the last year.</p>
<p>That includes the departure of well-regarded <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121017/mayer-tells-staff-barrett-officially-out-at-yahoo/">Chief Revenue Officer Michael Barrett</a> in mid-October, after De Castro got the COO job. He has left a large gap in sales leadership and in maintaining strong relationships with big advertisers and agencies. De Castro himself is not as well known in the ad marketplace, despite many years at Google in its sales organization.</p>
<p>He will likely have a more high-profile <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121226/yahoos-mayer-hoping-what-happens-with-big-advertisers-at-ces-doesnt-stay-in-vegas/">next week at the International CES</a>, the huge annual consumer electronics show taking place in Las Vegas, along with new Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who was a top product exec at Google. The pair is planning on meeting with major ad clients while there, which is their first significant outreach to marketers since taking their new roles at Yahoo.</p>
<p>De Castro had outlined the new ad reorg plan immediately after a multiday offsite with top sales leaders several weeks ago, and said the changes would come at the very beginning of 2013.</p>
<p>The ad staff at Yahoo begin to hear of the changes on Friday, so it looks like De Castro has met his deadline.</p>

<p>With all the hyped hullabaloo around <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121123/mobile-thursday-smartphone-shopping-is-still-tiny-but-its-this-years-big-online-buzzword/">just how mobile-icious we are this holiday season</a> &#8212; yes, it&#8217;s up, but it is also a retailer-cooked trend that reporters grab onto amid the news drought of the Thanksgiving weekend &#8212; one of the many statistics spewed out by a variety of sources was rather interesting.</p>
<p>According to IBM, in a report titled &#8220;The iPad Factor&#8221;: </p>
<p>&#8220;The [Apple] iPad generated more traffic than any other tablet or smartphone, reaching nearly 10 percent of online shopping. This was followed by iPhone at 8.7 percent and [Google] Android 5.5 percent. The iPad dominated tablet traffic at 88.3 percent followed by the Barnes &#038; Noble Nook at 3.1 percent, Amazon Kindle at 2.4 percent and the Samsung Galaxy at 1.8 percent.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, over at eBay and its PayPal unit &#8212; which spewed out all kinds of data on mobile transactions that showed volume was between two and three times greater, mostly on Apple devices &#8212; the company noted that one of its bestselling items on Black Friday was the iPad 2, selling 250 per hour from 12 am to 8 am PT. </p>
<p>That tracks on an earlier survey by Nielsen with 48 percent of U.S. children 6 to 12 years old asking for the iPad, followed by iPod touch (36 percent), iPad mini (36 percent) and iPhone (33 percent).</p>

<p>This is a massive move and also a risky one. Yahoo&#8217;s homepage sees about 170 million daily users who click in to do a variety of things. That huge traffic means that advertising placements earn big bucks from marketers &#8212; which inside sources said is typically upwards of $350,000 for a prime placement for a day, rising in price depending on complexity.</p>
<p>Thus, making any dramatic change to the powerful homepage is a big deal for Yahoo&#8217;s bottom line, especially in the important fourth quarter, when big advertisers spend a lot of money online and expect big results.</p>
<p>And the latest versions are certainly a major shift from Yahoo&#8217;s older look, with the latest using an interactive tiled approach at the very top that suggests the design spawn of Microsoft&#8217;s Windows 8 and Flipboard&#8217;s elegant social reading app.</p>
<p>As I noted last week, along with experiments in infinite scrolling, a simplified logo and giving search more prominence, Yahoo&#8217;s homepage change seems to be aimed at being consumed on touch-responsive, non-PC devices.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise, since Mayer declared in a recent earnings call that Yahoo was going to veer toward a &#8220;mobile first&#8221; sensibility. &#8220;Yahoo will have to be a predominantly mobile company,&#8221; she <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121022/liveblogging-the-debut-of-yahoo-ceo-mayer-tailor-made-for-marissa/">said</a>.</p>

In a bit of unlucky timing &#8212; even as Yahoo prepped the home page redo, as well as major overhauls of other products &#8212; its hugely popular Fantasy Football offering went down right as eight games were about to start at 10 am PT.</p>
<p>Yahoo acknowledged the slowness in its servers on Twitter, noting: &#8220;We&#8217;re still working to fix fantasy server issue &amp; will update ASAP. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience &amp; appreciate your patience.&#8221;</p>
<p>Fantasy Football fans were livid, although this has happened before, especially to those who waited to do their lineup. But some were also funny about the screw-up, as you can see below:</p>

<p>As of two hours ago, <a href="https://twitter.com/YahooFootball">Yahoo said it was still working on the problem</a>. Presumably, it will be the first fix-it challenge for <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121015/yahoo-confirms-hiring-of-googles-de-castro-as-coo-like-i-said/">new COO Henrique De Castro</a>, who starts this week.</p>
<p>Hopefully, Yahoo will not have such problems with the homepage rollout, once the final version is selected.</p>
<p>Until then, please check out two images of yet another version, which is similar &#8212; although not the same &#8212; as the one I posted last week. In the latest design, for example, the swooshy scroll at the top is smaller and a 300 by 250-sized ad unit is back in place at the top. Overall, it is a little bit more conservative, although still streamlined.</p>

<p>Another week and yet another new design for the Yahoo homepage is being tested out on users &#8212; this time, it appears to be one (which you can see below) that looks a lot like Microsoft Windows 8&rsquo;s touchscreen tiled approach (which is here).</p>
<p>After already putting out tests in the field with infinite scrolling, a simplified logo and giving search more prominence, the Silicon Valley Internet giant is apparently testing an even more drastically different redesign of its key landing page &#8212; one that seems to be aimed at being consumed on touch-responsive, non-PC devices.</p>
<p>As you can see from the screenshots below &#8212; which a user sent me, and which look exactly like what many Yahoo sources have described to me recently &#8212; the design uses big photos tiled across the top of the page. It suggests an ethos that is reminiscent of the new approach by Microsoft, as well as many others, such as Flipboard and Pinterest.</p>
<p>All of these encourage users to reach out and touch, scroll and swoosh. In fact, there are side-swiping arrows on the new Yahoo design.</p>
<p>Also part of the look, which is still being tweaked: More simplified icons for various Yahoo properties, fewer text links, additional social and personalization aspects and &#8212; perhaps most importantly &#8212; no advertising module at the very top. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s interesting, since Yahoo&#8217;s homepage is a big moneymaker for the company, because of its huge daily traffic. Thus, any new homepage design will have both massive consumer and financial impact on the company.</p>
<p>Sources said that one possible plan is to move from several 300 by 250-sized ad units to a single 300 by 600, which other sites like AOL have shifted toward. Such a change will not be without controversy for marketers.</p>
<p>It will also present a fresh selling challenge for new COO Henrique De Castro, who arrives at Yahoo from Google next week, and who will be helming sales efforts. (Hey, Henrique &#8212; get ready for my upcoming 360-degree profile of you!)</p>
<p>The latest redo is now being iterated under the regime of new CEO Marissa Mayer, under an awfully confident codename, Project Homerun. We&#8217;ll see if it is San Francisco Giant&#8217;s Panda-worthy, but sources said it is set to be released widely within the next two months. </p>
<p>But, while some <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marissa-mayers-new-yahoocom-homepage-2012-10">new designs that have surfaced</a> have been closer to the current version of Yahoo, the latest design is a more significant shift that would clearly lend itself well to mobile touchscreens, especially on increasingly popular tablets.</p>
<p>Along with Pinterest, Flipboard and Windows 8, other sites have done this, of course, most particularly pioneering content design done several years ago by BermanBraun&#8217;s Wonderwall for Microsoft&#8217;s MSN portal.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise, since Mayer declared in a recent earnings call &#8212; articulating what many desktop-trapped Silicon Valley Internet giants have also done recently &#8212; that Yahoo was going to also veer toward a &#8220;mobile first&#8221; sensibility.</p>

<p>Another big media departure from Yahoo: <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/david-w-rice/0/b47/b41">David Rice</a>, VP of media properties, has left the Silicon Valley Internet giant to take over as SVP and GM of CBS Interactive Games, according to sources close to the situation.</p>
<p>Rice left Yahoo Monday and starts at CBS on Monday, sources said. </p>
<p>Earlier this week, the head of Yahoo&#8217;s Omg! and Yahoo TV, <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121015/yahoo-tv-and-omg-head-moves-to-young-hollywood/">Liz Coughlin</a>, left to run business operations at next-gen digital content site Young Hollywood.</p>
<p>The media properties at Yahoo have always been its most successful and powerful units, including powerhouse sites such as Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Sports.</p>
<p>Which is why Rice is a great get for CBS. Hired in 2010 as part of the crew brought in by former Chief Product Officer Blake Irving, the former Microsoft exec was the key media product manager in charge of strategy and execution of Yahoo&#8217;s home page, news, sports, finance, entertainment, lifestyle, games and more. </p>
<p>CBS Interactive Games is a big digital division at the company, with more than $50 million in annual revenue, 32 million unique monthly visitors and one billion page views a month, according to comScore. GameSpot is its flagship site, along with GameFAQs, Metacritic, ComicVine and a variety of video streaming and eSports offerings.</p>
<p>Rice will be in charge of all operations at CBS Interactive Games &#8212; at Yahoo, he had only media product duties, although the many properties are all huge.</p>
<p>In a related move this past week, new CEO Marissa Mayer hired former Google sales exec <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121015/can-she-land-a-big-one-yahoos-mayer-about-to-hook-google-sales-exec-de-castro-for-top-ad-role/">Henrique De Castro</a> to become COO at Yahoo. Mayer also <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121015/can-she-land-a-big-one-yahoos-mayer-about-to-hook-google-sales-exec-de-castro-for-top-ad-role/">told staff that all media units would report to him</a>.</p>

<p>One of the main things that Wall Street analysts had been watching for in the first-quarter earnings for Microsoft today was how its current flagship Windows software business was doing in the lead-up to the release of Windows 8 on October 26.</p>
<p>A little cracked, as it turns out.</p>
<p>Investors had expected that the Redmond, Wash., software giant&#8217;s first-quarter earnings would be $16.4 billion, compared to $17.4 billion last year, and that earnings would drop to 56 cents from 68 cents. </p>
<p>Instead, Microsoft turned in quarterly revenue of $16.01 billion and earnings of 53 cents a share.</p>
<p>One big culprit was a decline in sales of Windows, which was impacted by the company&#8217;s deferral of revenue related to Windows 8.</p>
<p>Microsoft is making a big bet that the new operating system &#8212; <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20121016/windows-pushes-into-the-tablet-age/">a drastic change from previous versions</a> &#8212; will boost sales of PC and other mobile devices, especially tablets. The once-dominant company is seeing big challenges from consumer interest in products that do not use Windows, especially from Apple and Google.</p>
<p>Thus, it is now wait and see, which made investors nervous. Microsoft&#8217;s stock was down over 3 percent in after-hours trading, to $28.58. </p>
<p>That&#8217;s no surprise given the news.</p>
<p>Said Microsoft:</p>
<p>&#8220;The Windows &#038; Windows Live Division posted revenue of $3.24 billion, a 33% decrease from the prior year period. Adjusting for the impact of the Windows Upgrade Offer and pre-sales of Windows 8 to OEMs prior to general availability, Windows division non-GAAP revenue declined 9% for the first quarter.&#8221;</p>
<p>Windows had already seen a decline in sales of the key product, which was down nearly 13 percent in the last quarter.</p>
<p>Other divisions had mixed revenue results: Servers &#038; Tools was up eight percent, the Business division had a two percent decline, the Online Services unit saw a nine percent rise and the Entertainment and Devices division was down one percent.</p>

<p>Apple has hired major Amazon exec and prominent search technologist William Stasior to run its Siri unit, according to sources.</p>
<p>At the online retail giant, Stasior has been in charge of A9, Amazon&#8217;s search and search advertising unit. The former AltaVista exec co-founded the independent company and has run it since Udi Manber left for Google.</p>
<p>The Palo Alto, Calif.-based A9 now provides search for Amazon sites worldwide, as well as other online retail sites.</p>
<p>Stasior has an impressive pedigree (you can read <a href="http://bill.stasior.com/resume.pdf">his resume</a> and see a really geeky <a href="http://bill.stasior.com/binary-bill.html">binary image he posted of himself here</a>). The MIT PhD has taught there, too, and has done stints at Oracle, Netcentives and AltaVista. He came to Amazon in 2003 as its director of search and navigation.</p>
<p>He will now be in charge of Siri, which is Apple&#8217;s famous voice-activated personal-assistant program. The tech giant <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20100428/apple-snags-siri/">acquired Siri in April of 2010</a> to garner a big stake in voice-activated search.</p>
<p>While Siri has had a high profile in the iPhones, Apple has lost some of the talent who created it. <a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120911/siri-co-founder-adam-cheyer-left-apple-in-june/">Adam Cheyer</a>, who co-founded the voice recognition software company prior to its acquisition by Apple in 2008, left recently. And CEO Dag Kittlaus departed in October of 2011.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s more intriguing is what else Stasior might find himself working on &#8212; presumably, strengthening Apple&#8217;s search and search advertising technology in the wake of its increasing competition with Google.</p>
<p>Apple has recently tossed Google&#8217;s mapping technology from the latest version of its iOS 6 operating system and could eventually remove it as a search option, too, on its popular smartphones and also from its other computing devices and software. </p>
<p>Amazon had no comment on Stasior&#8217;s departure.</p>
